- 0:38Speaker 2: Hi and welcome to episode 53 of the UK Travel Planning Podcast.
- 0:42Speaker 2: In this week's episode, doug and I are going to be talking about his trip to the Isle of Wight, which he took while he was in the UK.
- 0:49Speaker 2: Doug's actually now back in Australia I'm still in the UK for another few weeks but while Doug was here he did do quite a few trips himself, including last week's trip to Wales.
- 1:00Speaker 2: If you haven't listened to that podcast and you're considering going to Wales, do listen to episode 52.
- 1:04Speaker 2: But in this episode we're going to talk about his visit to the Isle of Wight.
- 1:08Speaker 2: So Doug decided to go to the Isle of Wight while I visited Paris.
- 1:12Speaker 2: so I popped over to Paris for a day which, yes, i will be recording for a podcast, hopefully in a few weeks to go, probably end of July, august so I will be talking about my day trip.
- 1:21Speaker 2: So, hi, doug, so we thought we would have a chat about your day trip to Isle of Wight this week, didn't we?
- 1:28Speaker 3: We did.
- 1:28Speaker 3: yeah, it was a bit of a relaxed-minute decision to go.
- 1:30Speaker 3: For those that don't know, the Isle of Wight is located off the south coast of England and it's separated by a stretch of water called the Solund.
- 1:41Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 1:42Speaker 2: So obviously I was going off to Paris for the entire day, so I was away from half past five in the morning until I didn't get back to half past nine in the evening, because it was quite a long day.
- 1:52Speaker 2: So you were deciding about where to go on that day, because obviously there's loads of fantastic day trips that you can take from Paris.
- 1:59Speaker 2: So why did you decide to visit the Isle of Wight, particularly as it was a last-minute decision?
- 2:04Speaker 3: Okay, well, incidentally, that week there had been some comments about the Isle of Wight within the group.
- 2:11Speaker 3: It just seemed like a perfect opportunity while I was in London to have a look at it and see if I could plan it logistically for one day.
- 2:22Speaker 3: You're right, there's lots of things to see there on the Isle of Wight, but there's a few priorities I wanted to see if I could accomplish in that one day.
- 2:33Speaker 3: And really I looked at the weather forecast as well and it was a beautiful, hot, sunny, warm day in the UK, so I thought why not give it a go?
- 2:45Speaker 2: Actually, yeah, it was a good choice actually, because I know between the two of us we've been to the most places in the UK either you've been or I've been, or we've been together.
- 2:53Speaker 2: But Isle of Wight was one of the places that we had said we hadn't been to.
- 2:56Speaker 2: So I think that was another influence, because obviously we do get asked.
- 3:00Speaker 2: We've been asked quite a lot actually this year about the Isle of Wight, so it certainly seems to be becoming more popular destination, that's for sure.
- 3:07Speaker 2: And obviously it was a lovely summer's day, so where else what more perfect could you have than a day trip to a beautiful island?
- 3:16Speaker 3: That's right and also, as you well know, you get asked quite often for different alternatives and choices for days out from London, And the Isle of Wight seemed to take all those boxes because there's something for the whole family to do there.
- 3:31Speaker 2: Yeah, so do you want to talk us through about how you went about planning your day?
- 3:35Speaker 3: Okay, so I try not to make this too lengthy, but first of all I looked at all the popular locations on the island.
- 3:42Speaker 3: Those obviously included Osborne House, carrasbrook, the famous Needles landmark, the attraction centre there, not to mention a steam railway on there, which I really, really wanted to do above all else, but I didn't get a chance.
- 3:57Speaker 3: But there's birds that prey there, donkey sanctuaries there's, not to mention beautiful coastal folk paths and walks within the island.
- 4:07Speaker 3: So that was the starting point and then I sort of narrowed that down just to priority list and places that have been asked for in the group.
- 4:18Speaker 3: And then I went on to see how many different means there is to get to the island.
- 4:23Speaker 3: Obviously, in the island there's numerous sea routes onto the island from Southampton, from Limeington and from Portsmouth.
- 4:35Speaker 3: So I looked at all the different possible routes and how long they take and Surprise, surprise, the fastest was going to be a hovercraft, which is only 10 minutes.
- 4:44Speaker 2: Yeah, that's amazing.
- 4:45Speaker 2: I mean, it's a lot.
- 4:46Speaker 2: I never thought about hovercraft when you did mention that, because it's, um, i remember taking the hovercraft when I was Really quite small and I think we went over to France, from what I remember, because it was a long time ago.
- 4:56Speaker 2: So I was quite surprised when you mentioned a hovercraft.
- 4:58Speaker 3: Yeah, and obviously It's.
- 5:01Speaker 3: I say it was the fastest route, which is only 10 minutes, and when you're only going for a day you want to get as quick as you can and Incidentally, it turned out to be the fastest train route as well from London.
- 5:12Speaker 3: I went from London Waterloo Station, which was on the the tube line from St Prankers where we're stating, because she would catch in the early morning your style, so that that fitted perfectly in his own.
- 5:25Speaker 3: It just under two hours for direct train on the Saturday Down to Portsmouth and Southsea train station.
- 5:31Speaker 3: So what you have to do from that, this sounds, sounds really good.
- 5:35Speaker 3: You've got to catch the hover bus to the hover port to catch the hovercraft.
- 5:39Speaker 3: So it's all the hovers and.
- 5:44Speaker 3: But the website for that is actually really, really good.
- 5:47Speaker 3: So I looked whether there's a space on the hovercraft in the morning around the time I wanted to go to.
- 5:53Speaker 3: Every sort of 30 minutes to an hour, i think it depends on the on the day and the time that you travel.
- 5:58Speaker 3: So I caught the direct train to Portsmouth and Southsea train station and then Outside of the front of the station I was looking for the bus and I could not see it, and then I found it was a Little way to the right.
- 6:13Speaker 3: So I knew it was the hover bus because in big letters on the front It said hover bus.
- 6:17Speaker 3: So No, i'm away there.
- 6:20Speaker 3: You don't pay any more for the bus because that's all included in the price of the train ticket.
- 6:24Speaker 3: I just have to show the ticket passed to the bus driver And then it's just five minutes to the hoverport and very, very straightforward.
- 6:34Speaker 3: I actually managed in time For an earlier sailing.
- 6:38Speaker 3: You say sailing to hovercraft.
- 6:40Speaker 3: I'm not sure.
- 6:41Speaker 3: Is that the same thing?
- 6:42Speaker 3: Yeah, um, because you can't say for the, for the float, i don't know what the term is, i don't know What's it was sailing, and so the change, my booking and 10 minutes straight across, perfect, smooth, fast, just wonderful.
- 6:59Speaker 3: Yeah, that was a cost to ride.
- 7:00Speaker 3: And then there's ride interchange there, which is there's a little Train that runs from ride to shanklin, which was not gonna suit me on this particular day.
- 7:11Speaker 3: I never shall wait from train journeys, as you all know, but I had to on this occasion, so I caught the boss, the local buses that I'd already looked at, all the local services.
- 7:23Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, i just want to ask you just before kind of move away from the hovercrafting hovercraft thing.
- 7:28Speaker 2: So obviously you do get seasick which we talked about before when we come.
- 7:33Speaker 2: So It was obviously important that you had checked to make sure, i mean, the weather was good and it was smooth, yeah.
- 7:39Speaker 2: So how did you find the sail and were you, were you okay on that?
- 7:43Speaker 3: Yeah, to be honest with it is more adrenaline and excitement.
- 7:46Speaker 3: Came a little boy again and some, but I'm not beat on before and it was No more than 10 minutes.
- 7:52Speaker 3: It is so fast, it's so smooth.
- 7:54Speaker 3: I thought I might have a lot of vibration and But no, no, it's just so I remember it being quite noisy, was it noisy?
- 8:03Speaker 3: ish, i suppose.
- 8:03Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yep, and it was a busy it was.
- 8:07Speaker 3: I would say that one was probably about half full, the one coming back was more full And that was like I'm saying you have to knew late afternoon, but it's just wonderful.
- 8:17Speaker 3: I took a couple of videos I posted there as well.
- 8:19Speaker 3: Share again, hi, it's just, it's just.
- 8:23Speaker 3: Yeah, it's just wonderful.
- 8:24Speaker 3: It's really exciting.
- 8:25Speaker 3: There's lots of children on there And they were very excited as well, the fathers less.
- 8:30Speaker 2: So, yeah, yeah but, Yeah, it was wonderful.
- 8:33Speaker 3: So back to the buses and fuck the buses the boss is there one by coming up and Southern Vectors, and that's the local bus service, and Their website was excellent, really was I.
- 8:47Speaker 3: I wanted to find out whether it's going to be cheaper to buy single tickets, return tickets, they ticket, etc.
- 8:53Speaker 3: And I Went back to what some of the information I found out actually north Wales, when I saw some of the bus drivers there who were Actually very, very helpful to travel, and they said to me the best thing for training here for bus tickets is to ask the drivers They know what's best, you know, that's where you go in and when you're traveling, that's what, yeah, and they are the best people to ask for which is the most suitable ticket.
- 9:19Speaker 3: Now, around the time I was there, it happened to be the Isle of Wight Festival, which is a music festival, and so I'm not sure if it was just a temporary thing or an ongoing thing At each single journey was only two pounds.
- 9:33Speaker 3: So for the first place I was visiting, which I'll come to later, it was one single bus.
- 9:40Speaker 3: So I bought a single ticket on the advice of the bus driver, but from there I went to another location I wasn't going back to Vine.
- 9:48Speaker 3: So he said you need to buy an ongoing ticket, a forwarding ticket.
- 9:52Speaker 3: So I was catching two buses.
- 9:54Speaker 3: So that worked out even cheaper Instead of £4, it was £3, 80 or 90.
- 9:58Speaker 3: So tour to the bus drivers.
- 10:01Speaker 3: That works very, very well.
- 10:03Speaker 3: Ok, so that was the buses, but what I had to do.
- 10:07Speaker 3: So we've got the train, we've got the hover Hover crap, hover bus, hover port.
- 10:13Speaker 3: So what I did then we've got the buses all sorted.
- 10:17Speaker 3: But what I did pick up when the driver gave me was a copy of the bus timetable So I could plan my route, out exactly how long it was going to take each journey and how long I could spend at each location, because it's very important.
- 10:31Speaker 3: I did a lot of walking and looking at my watch as well.
- 10:37Speaker 3: I needed to know where the bus stops my ongoing journeys were.
- 10:42Speaker 3: So when the bus was dropped to be off, i said to the driver each time where do I catch the return bus from?
- 10:47Speaker 3: Because it's not always just across the road.
- 10:49Speaker 2: So it sounds like obviously I know you only planned it the night before, but it sounds like you had to do quite a lot of planning.
- 10:55Speaker 3: Yeah, i did a lot of planning with a bit of flexibility as well.
- 10:59Speaker 3: If I missed that bus, how soon is the next one after that time of day?
- 11:02Speaker 3: Because, also, i've got to get back to the ride interchange later on in the afternoon to catch the return sailing of the hovercraft.
- 11:10Speaker 2: Yeah, and also you didn't want to just spend the entire day sitting on buses travelling around the Hale of Wight.
- 11:15Speaker 3: No, and that was another major consideration Each journey I think the maximum was about 30 minutes, and I did find out particularly later on in the day there's some faster buses and slower buses that literally go around the Hales, so you have to sort of gauge which one you're going to catch.
- 11:35Speaker 3: So that was a logistic part of it.
- 11:38Speaker 3: What I decided to do was to visit the main two attractions that I could see that were most represented.
- 11:45Speaker 2: Yeah, i was going to ask what attractions you settled on, and then how did you decide which ones you're going to visit, i guess, and then did you manage to visit them?
- 11:53Speaker 3: Yeah, the main two was Osborne House and Carries Brook Castle.
- 11:59Speaker 3: The words are not particularly close together, they're probably about 30 minutes apart, So they were the two I considered to be the most beneficial to visit.
- 12:09Speaker 3: They're both run by English Heritage And obviously we've got an English Heritage card through Historic Scotland, haven't we?
- 12:18Speaker 3: So we've got our cover.
- 12:20Speaker 2: Yes, i have.
- 12:21Speaker 2: Yeah, We can put information in about English Heritage just in the show notes as well, if anybody wants to know about English Heritage.
- 12:29Speaker 2: Because basically, because we were in Scotland last year, we joined Historic Scotland and for the first year of that membership we got half price entry to English Heritage.
- 12:39Speaker 2: But because we've renewed that Historic Scotland membership for a second year, we now get free entry into English Heritage.
- 12:46Speaker 3: And Caddo attractions, the equivalent in Wales.
- 12:51Speaker 2: Yes, that's correct.
- 12:52Speaker 2: So just give us a little bit of information about Osborne House in Carersburg Castle.
- 12:57Speaker 3: Yeah, no problem at all.
- 12:58Speaker 3: So Osborne House is the island home of Queen Victoria and her husband Albert.
- 13:06Speaker 3: They love that house.
- 13:07Speaker 3: The house was built between 1845 and 1851 and it's absolutely magnificent And I timed this just perfect.
- 13:14Speaker 3: I was the first one visiting that majority of the house, so the photos that I have taken there was nobody else in them, so that was you know.
- 13:25Speaker 3: I took some really, really good photos with her, but that's wonderful.
- 13:30Speaker 3: And then Carersburg Castle, a very rich history of on the island, and that's an historic fortress which is a place where King Charles I was actually in prison for a year after the English Civil War.
- 13:47Speaker 2: Yeah, Yeah, so that was in 1647, from the 13th of November.
- 13:51Speaker 2: I know that little bit history Yeah.
- 13:52Speaker 3: That's where he was in prison, from that day In prison there, yeah, yeah.
- 13:56Speaker 2: So obviously there are other places that are of interest on the Isle of Wight, you know, such as you know the Needles, yeah, the.
- 14:03Speaker 3: Needles, landmark yeah.
- 14:05Speaker 2: Yeah, landmark yeah.
- 14:06Speaker 3: Yeah, and there's Birds of Prey, donkey Sanctuaries, monkey House, not to mention the Isle of Wight of Steam, which I didn't get to do, which on my next visit.
- 14:19Speaker 3: I've definitely been doing that because it looked fantastic And because of the weather, the just magnificent.
- 14:25Speaker 3: I did find out there's a village here, not far from Newport, called God's Hill, which is absolutely beautiful.
- 14:31Speaker 3: It's a thatch, cottages and beautiful quaint tea room there.
- 14:35Speaker 3: It's well worth a visit at some point.
- 14:38Speaker 2: Oh, so did you go there on the day trip.
- 14:40Speaker 3: No, i just.
- 14:40Speaker 3: It was literally from A to B.
- 14:42Speaker 3: I had to plan my route out Directly.
- 14:45Speaker 3: I spent a little bit of time in Newport because so that you have to go to the bus station there.
- 14:49Speaker 3: So I had a little walk around there and I've got a bit of lunch as well.
- 14:51Speaker 3: So that's, i even plan my lunch in.
- 14:55Speaker 2: So I guess you had to keep your eye on the time.
- 14:57Speaker 3: Yeah, or literally all the time because places like Carriesbrook.
- 15:02Speaker 3: When the bus dropped me off there, i asked which is the way to the attraction.
- 15:06Speaker 3: That was to the bottom of the hill, not surprising.
- 15:08Speaker 3: The castles are generally built on the top of the hill so the bus does not go all the way up there.
- 15:13Speaker 3: So that was a good 20-25 minutes walk to the castle, which has a fantastic museum as well.
- 15:20Speaker 3: There's a connection there with Queen Victoria as well, which I won't tell anymore, but we'll write about that.
- 15:27Speaker 2: I mean, how much time did you spend at each of those destinations, which is a?
- 15:32Speaker 3: close to two hours at both.
- 15:33Speaker 2: Okay, and you would say that was a.
- 15:35Speaker 2: It wasn't a matter of time, did you?
- 15:36Speaker 2: or would you have had longer if you could have done Yeah?
- 15:39Speaker 3: certainly could have spent more the the Osborne house.
- 15:41Speaker 3: I didn't manage to get down to the coast where there's the, the bathing area where Queen Victoria and spent some time there.
- 15:47Speaker 3: I just did not have time for that because the house is a bit set back from the main road and it's a good 10 minutes walk there.
- 15:53Speaker 3: And besides the fact, i saw the tea room and I wanted a cup of tea and a slice of Victoria sponge, which is not unusual for me, is it?
- 16:01Speaker 2: No, absolutely not.
- 16:02Speaker 2: no, that's what you enjoy, so would you recommend taking the bus to see the island?
- 16:08Speaker 2: did you find that a good way to get around?
- 16:10Speaker 3: I did.
- 16:11Speaker 3: Actually I saw quite a few people using the bus, not just the one people there for the festival.
- 16:16Speaker 3: But when I saw into one of the bus drives he said it's an incredibly popular way to see the island because obviously someone wants to just get quite congested as well.
- 16:25Speaker 3: One other thing as well I was going to say for the buses, because the attractions are scattered around the island the, the day rover tickets.
- 16:37Speaker 3: They seem to be individual areas.
- 16:40Speaker 3: I could not find one that seemed to cover the the whole island or the attractions.
- 16:44Speaker 3: It seems to be area specific.
- 16:46Speaker 3: The Osborne house is in East Cow's, which is northern part.
- 16:51Speaker 3: The Needles is the west point.
- 16:53Speaker 3: So everything was scattered around.
- 16:55Speaker 2: Okay, so obviously you managed to see the two places that you had on your list, and I must admit I was quite jealous about Osborne house because I would really like to go there.
- 17:04Speaker 2: So you know, next time you visit I'll be with you.
- 17:08Speaker 2: Where would you like to go?
- 17:09Speaker 3: The Needles are certainly like to go and steam train.
- 17:12Speaker 3: We'll go to the steam train first, yeah, because, yeah, it's definitely worth visiting.
- 17:18Speaker 3: One of the buses go straight past one of the stations, so it's easy to get to.
- 17:23Speaker 2: So just to clarify again the Needles then is a landmark.
- 17:28Speaker 3: Yeah, it is a landmark lighthouse.
- 17:30Speaker 3: It's an attraction sort of centre.
- 17:31Speaker 3: There's bits of pieces there, things for kids and okay, so popular, probably a popular destination to go to then?
- 17:38Speaker 2: yeah, okay, so let's talk about again the religious.
- 17:42Speaker 2: What time did you leave London and what time did you return?
- 17:44Speaker 2: because I know I Think well, you left the hotel at the same time as I did, very early in the morning.
- 17:50Speaker 2: Yeah, you got back before I did.
- 17:51Speaker 3: I did.
- 17:52Speaker 3: I caught the just about six, oh six thirty six thirty in the morning tube Onto the northern line and I went straight down to London Waterloo and it took about 20 minutes.
- 18:04Speaker 3: So I came out of there and then I caught the five past seven train From Waterloo and that was direct, and I call that, to Portsmouth and Southsea, which is the one station back from the Portsmouth Harbor train station.
- 18:19Speaker 3: So okay, so yeah, just under two hours that train journey.
- 18:24Speaker 2: Okay.
- 18:24Speaker 2: So when you arrived back in Southsea, Portsmouth, did you catch the train straight back to London?
- 18:30Speaker 3: I didn't know.
- 18:31Speaker 3: I.
- 18:31Speaker 3: I Stepped off the hovercraft at the hoverport and then decided to walk along the, the sea, from there when it's a beautiful day, there's all the attractions and fairgrounds have attractions, and To watch the boats coming and out the.
- 18:50Speaker 3: You've got the, the ferry normal fare, which takes about 45 minutes across, and it was just a beautiful, lovely day.
- 18:57Speaker 3: And then I could see the Spinnaker Tower in the in the distance Well, i say distance, it's not very far and that's the observation Tower, that hundred centimeters tall and it stands as a real, real landmark of that area And that's right next to the historic Portsmouth dockyards And it's just a lovely area to walk around.
- 19:18Speaker 3: Walk around last year, didn't we?
- 19:19Speaker 3: but I wanted to?
- 19:20Speaker 3: Oh, we did from Southsea, which was being recommended to me.
- 19:24Speaker 3: Well, the day before, really.
- 19:28Speaker 2: I think we should do actually we should do a podcast about our date visit to the historic Dockyard, because it was fantastic.
- 19:34Speaker 3: Yes, and we were with great companies were that day.
- 19:38Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, we were.
- 19:39Speaker 2: Yes, i was a really good day trip, so maybe that's something that consider that we can do in the future.
- 19:43Speaker 2: So obviously you did this trip in June, so it was a beautiful English summer day and you had a lot of hours a day, like Exactly, so probably not something to recommend in the winter probably not.
- 19:57Speaker 3: You probably need to do over a couple of days.
- 19:59Speaker 3: I mean, the Osborne house is still still open.
- 20:02Speaker 3: You still see most of that Incausable castles, a castle, so monorag.
- 20:07Speaker 3: You're seeing castles in sort of dog.
- 20:09Speaker 3: Gloomy weather is probably a little bit better, i don't know.
- 20:11Speaker 3: Hmm, the needle's lighthouse is still going to be there, so you could do most of it.
- 20:15Speaker 3: I think it's just you say you're sure today, but you might have to stay overnight, sort of thing, or just do one of the things you could probably just do.
- 20:23Speaker 3: Osborne house, that was a no priority.
- 20:27Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 20:27Speaker 2: So obviously we we've got quite a few.
- 20:29Speaker 2: We've got articles on UK travelplanningcom and London travelplanningcom on day trips from London, and we've actually got an earlier episode as well Which covers you know, it's episode number eight, number 19, get it right episode number 19, where we talk about tips for choosing the best day trips from London.
- 20:50Speaker 2: So if you know you are considering and you're thinking you want to get away from London for the day, you have got lots of options.
- 20:58Speaker 2: Obviously, the Isle of Wight were thrown there in the mix.
- 20:59Speaker 2: I'm going to have to add that into the article.
- 21:00Speaker 2: And now, because now you've done it, doug, so we know it's an achievable Would you recommend it?
- 21:04Speaker 2: I certainly would.
- 21:05Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 21:07Speaker 3: I was very pleasantly surprised.
- 21:08Speaker 3: The quality of those attractions that I only saw the two, but well presented and well managed.
- 21:16Speaker 3: And the buses I was very impressed with the buses as well, the, the drivers incredibly helpful and, yeah, it was just a very enjoyable day out.
- 21:26Speaker 3: I mean, don't forget, i've now accomplished one thing I've been on a hovercraft.
- 21:31Speaker 2: Yes, absolutely Absolutely Okay.
- 21:33Speaker 2: So good, that's lots to recommend.
- 21:35Speaker 2: So if you're considering, as I say, day trip from London you know I consider Isle of Wight then you can put that into the mix when you decide on where you want to visit.
- 21:43Speaker 2: So thanks, doug, for joining us on this week's podcast again to talk about some of the places you have visited when you were over in the UK this year.
- 21:52Speaker 2: It's great to find out all the information about how to get there and how you organised it and what you enjoyed.
- 21:59Speaker 2: Thank you.
