- 0:00Speaker 1: To death you hear his voice.
- 0:02Speaker 2: Do not harden your hearts as at Meribah, as on
- 0:04Speaker 2: the day at Massa in the wilderness.
- 0:08Speaker 1: Thank you very much.
- 0:09Speaker 2: I will now call upon the worship leader, our brother Sam,
- 0:14Speaker 2: to take up this space.
- 0:17Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 0:33Speaker 3: It's a blessed morning, and I will come here to
- 0:36Speaker 3: our worship service.
- 0:37Speaker 4: Good morning.
- 0:38Speaker 5: Good morning.
- 0:40Speaker 4: Welcome.
- 0:41Speaker 3: It's a new month, so we have an opportunity to
- 0:44Speaker 3: learn a new song. I'm Samuel Mundo, leading you in
- 0:47Speaker 3: the service this morning. Shall we just pray? Our Father
- 0:52Speaker 3: in heaven, we give you praise, we give you glory,
- 0:55Speaker 3: and thanks for your love and kindness upon our lives.
- 0:58Speaker 3: We thank you, O God, for gathering us once again,
- 1:01Speaker 3: even to worship and exalt your name. Father, as we
- 1:04Speaker 3: begin our worship service, we want to commit ourselves unto you,
- 1:08Speaker 3: asking that, Lord, even as we come, you alone, O God,
- 1:11Speaker 3: shall be able to deal with us, O God, in
- 1:14Speaker 3: a way that pleases you, O God. Father, as your word,
- 1:16Speaker 3: O God, will be spoken in this place, may our
- 1:19Speaker 3: hearts be receptive even unto your word. Father, even as
- 1:22Speaker 3: we sing songs of praise unto you, O God, may
- 1:26Speaker 3: it all be to the glory and honor of your name. Father,
- 1:29Speaker 3: even as later as the scriptures will be read, O God,
- 1:32Speaker 3: we pray. that, Father, all this shall come even unto
- 1:35Speaker 3: your glory. Father, I want to commit all our activities
- 1:39Speaker 3: of this morning unto you, that, Father, in all that
- 1:42Speaker 3: we do, we may seek to glorify your name, we
- 1:44Speaker 3: may seek to honor your name in the mighty and
- 1:46Speaker 3: just Christ.
- 1:46Speaker 6: We thank you in our hearts.
- 1:48Speaker 4: Amen.
- 1:50Speaker 3: Visitors, you are at the end of the service, so
- 1:52Speaker 3: that we tell you more about the activities of Hillview
- 1:56Speaker 3: Baptist Church. As we begin our service, our first hymn
- 2:03Speaker 3: was written by Fanny Crosby. Now, this was someone who
- 2:11Speaker 3: lived most of her life as a blind person. She
- 2:15Speaker 3: lost her sight at only two months old, all because
- 2:19Speaker 3: of a mistake by a physician. Now, history has it
- 2:23Speaker 3: that her grandmother, who was a Christian, who she was
- 2:27Speaker 3: living with, would read the word of God to her,
- 2:30Speaker 3: and she would memorize the scriptures, and eventually she gave
- 2:34Speaker 3: her life to God. Now, one thing I want us
- 2:38Speaker 3: to see is you'd wonder how someone who lived as
- 2:44Speaker 3: a blind person with this frowning providence, instead of living
- 2:48Speaker 3: a life saying, God, why did this happen to me?
- 2:53Speaker 3: But she penned down this hymn, which is Blessed Assurance,
- 2:57Speaker 3: Jesus is Blessed. O what a fortress of glory divine,
- 3:01Speaker 3: heir of salvation, purchase of God, born of his spirit,
- 3:05Speaker 3: washed in his blood. Now the chorus says, this is
- 3:08Speaker 3: my story, this is my song, praising my Savior all
- 3:13Speaker 3: the day long. This is my story, this is my song,
- 3:17Speaker 3: praising my Savior all the day long.
- 3:19Speaker 6: Now this is.
- 3:20Speaker 3: Someone who, instead of crying about her not having sight,
- 3:25Speaker 3: but she says, my story, my song is to praise
- 3:27Speaker 3: the Savior all the day long. This is an encouragement
- 3:30Speaker 3: to us even as we come. Most of the times
- 3:33Speaker 3: we want to look at the physical needs that we
- 3:37Speaker 3: are lacking, the physical disabilities that we may have. But
- 3:42Speaker 3: even as we have given our lives to God, even
- 3:44Speaker 3: as God has called us to himself to grant us salvation,
- 3:47Speaker 3: it is a call for us to rejoice even in
- 3:49Speaker 3: his name this morning. So regardless of what we may have,
- 3:52Speaker 3: what needs we may have, or we may have come
- 3:54Speaker 3: with this morning, let's rejoice and be glad even in God.
- 3:58Speaker 3: So we'll sing the Bemba version of this hymn, Blessed Assurance.
- 4:03Speaker 3: I'll ask us to stand even as we sing this song.
- 4:31Speaker 7: Yes, you want to love, no composure. I will never
- 4:43Speaker 7: leave you, never move on. Thank you. Thank you. Oh,
- 5:32Speaker 7: my God, where are you? Where are you, my angel?
- 5:37Speaker 7: Where are you, my angel?
- 6:10Speaker 5: Oh, oh, oh, oh.
- 6:54Speaker 8: What a love. Yes, you know. Que mi vida te
- 7:06Speaker 8: lo dera Que si tu pides a caminar Dime si
- 7:12Speaker 8: vuelves de alta.
- 7:13Speaker 5: Vez Let us pray. Let us pray.
- 8:05Speaker 3: What is our hope in life and death? Christ alone.
- 8:09Speaker 3: What is our only confidence? That our souls to whom belong.
- 8:14Speaker 3: We shall sing this, another lovely hymn that tells us
- 8:18Speaker 3: that only Christ is our hope. Even as we face
- 8:21Speaker 3: many challenges, we can only hope even in Christ.
- 8:43Speaker 8: Christ alone, Christ alone, that is.
- 8:49Speaker 5: Our only confidence.
- 8:54Speaker 8: Our songs to Him belong, who holds our day. What
- 9:09Speaker 8: comes apart from His command And what will keep us
- 9:17Speaker 8: to the end The love of Christ in which we
- 9:24Speaker 8: stand Our hope springs eternal.
- 9:33Speaker 5: Oh, sing hallelujah.
- 9:35Speaker 8: Now and ever we confess Christ our hope and life within.
- 9:48Speaker 8: But you can call the troubles home. But you can
- 9:56Speaker 8: calm the troubled soul. God is good, God is good.
- 10:03Speaker 8: Where is His grace and goodness, Lord? In our great
- 10:12Speaker 8: Redeemer's blood. who holds our faith when fears arise, who
- 10:21Speaker 8: stands above the stormy trials, who sends the waves that
- 10:30Speaker 8: bring us life unto the shore, the rock of life.
- 10:38Speaker 5: Oh, sing.
- 10:41Speaker 8: Hallelujah, our hope springs eternal. Oh, sing hallelujah. Now and
- 10:56Speaker 8: ever we confess Christ our hope and life and death.
- 11:14Speaker 8: We will rise to meet the Lord in sin and death.
- 11:44Speaker 8: And rises up forevermore. Oh, sing hallelujah. Our hope springs eternally.
- 12:10Speaker 8: Christ our hope.
- 12:14Speaker 5: And life entail.
- 12:18Speaker 8: Oh, sing hallelujah. Our hope's praise eternal.
- 12:26Speaker 5: Oh, sing hallelujah.
- 12:31Speaker 8: Now and ever we confess.
- 12:36Speaker 9: Christ our hope in life and death. Now and ever
- 12:43Speaker 9: we confess. Christ our hope in life and death.
- 12:51Speaker 6: I will ask us to take our seats briefly.
- 12:59Speaker 3: As you may be aware, those who have been coming
- 13:02Speaker 3: to Ovil Baptist, it's been our tradition to to learn
- 13:05Speaker 3: a new song every month. Now this being a new
- 13:09Speaker 3: first Sunday of the month, we are going to introduce
- 13:12Speaker 3: a new song to you. We have a depleted choir today,
- 13:16Speaker 3: but I have confidence in them that they're up to
- 13:19Speaker 3: the task. So the choir will go through only the
- 13:24Speaker 3: first verse and the chorus.
- 13:27Speaker 6: Then we'll see how we move from there. So the
- 13:29Speaker 6: choir will lead us.
- 13:29Speaker 3: And those who may be familiar with the song, you
- 13:31Speaker 3: can join the choir even as they lead us. This
- 13:33Speaker 3: song was introduced as we were exiting the church last week,
- 13:38Speaker 3: so it could be familiar to most of us. The
- 13:42Speaker 3: song title is I Will Offer Up My Life.
- 14:02Speaker 10: Will offer up my life In spirit and truth Pouring
- 14:10Speaker 10: out the earth of love As my worship to you
- 14:16Speaker 10: In surrender I must give My every part Lord, receive
- 14:25Speaker 10: this sacrifice Of a broken heart.
- 14:30Speaker 8: Jesus, what can I give? What can I bring? So
- 14:35Speaker 8: free through the grave. Jesus, loving the King. Savior, what
- 14:43Speaker 8: can be saved?
- 14:46Speaker 5: What can be sung? A simple song, isn't it?
- 14:57Speaker 8: So I'll ask.
- 15:00Speaker 5: Us to.
- 15:23Speaker 3: You observed how we're doing the chorus, so we have
- 15:26Speaker 3: a part for the men and a part for the women.
- 15:29Speaker 3: So I'll ask the men to lead us as we
- 15:32Speaker 3: do the chorus first, then we'll stand up and do
- 15:35Speaker 3: the rest of the awesome.
- 15:37Speaker 6: So let's do the chorus.
- 15:38Speaker 5: We'll see how it goes.
- 15:40Speaker 8: Jesus, what can I give?
- 15:45Speaker 5: What can I bring you?
- 15:52Speaker 8: So faithful and free. To so loving a King.
- 15:59Speaker 5: Savior, what can you say? What can be said?
- 16:05Speaker 8: I turn with all your days.
- 16:10Speaker 5: All the things you have done. All my words can
- 16:15Speaker 5: you tell.
- 16:18Speaker 8: I have a very good class. Let's now stand and
- 16:26Speaker 8: sing our song.
- 16:28Speaker 5: On the top. On the top.
- 16:54Speaker 11: Will offer up my life in spirit and truth pouring
- 17:05Speaker 11: out the oil of love as my worship to you
- 17:10Speaker 11: in surrender I must give my every part Lord receive
- 17:17Speaker 11: this sacrifice of a broken heart Jesus, what can I give?
- 17:26Speaker 5: What can I give?
- 17:28Speaker 8: So clear through the grave. To serve and be the King. Savior,
- 17:36Speaker 8: what can you say? What can you say? As a
- 17:42Speaker 8: praise of your name.
- 17:45Speaker 5: All the things you have done.
- 17:56Speaker 8: You deserve my every breath For you.
- 18:15Speaker 12: Paid the great cost Giving up your life to death,
- 18:26Speaker 12: even death on the cross. You took all my shame away,
- 18:33Speaker 12: begging me to let my sin.
- 18:36Speaker 13: Open up the gates.
- 18:39Speaker 8: Of hell, I'm not there on me. Jesus, what can
- 18:46Speaker 8: I give you?
- 18:48Speaker 5: What can I bring?
- 18:50Speaker 8: So give to the friends. To so loving a King.
- 18:56Speaker 8: Sing now, what can be said? What can be sung?
- 19:03Speaker 8: As the praise of your name. All the things you
- 19:08Speaker 8: have done. All my words could not tell.
- 19:19Speaker 5: Not even in power.
- 19:23Speaker 8: From the dead I found that.
- 19:27Speaker 12: It's all I've been sent for.
- 19:31Speaker 5: Jesus, what did I do? What can I bring?
- 19:39Speaker 8: So beautiful, I pray. To so loving a King.
- 19:45Speaker 5: And now I can be saved. sung?
- 19:51Speaker 8: By the praise of your name, all the.
- 19:55Speaker 5: Things you have done.
- 20:02Speaker 8: Oh, my words could not tell, not even in part.
- 20:11Speaker 8: On the day of.
- 20:13Speaker 12: The blood that is poured by this thankful heart.
- 20:19Speaker 5: Oh, my words could not tell, not even in part.
- 20:29Speaker 8: Of the debt of love that is owed.
- 20:35Speaker 12: By this thankful heart.
- 20:42Speaker 3: Indeed, we cannot tell by words of the debt of
- 20:46Speaker 3: love that we owe even unto God. I'll now ask
- 20:48Speaker 3: Elder Kaunde to come and give us the intercessory prayer.
- 20:52Speaker 3: Then our brother and daughter will come for the consecutive
- 20:55Speaker 3: Bible reading.
- 21:09Speaker 1: Good morning once again.
- 21:12Speaker 2: As we come before the Lord in prayer this morning,
- 21:18Speaker 2: we have five items of praise to bring before him,
- 21:23Speaker 2: and we have three items of petition to present before him.
- 21:29Speaker 2: In the first place, let us thank God for the
- 21:35Speaker 2: successful holding of programs for both the girls and the
- 21:40Speaker 2: boys in the pre and in the teen classes yesterday.
- 21:44Speaker 1: I pray that the.
- 21:46Speaker 2: Lord will continue to use these means to draw the
- 21:49Speaker 2: girls and the boys to himself in salvation. Secondly, let
- 21:56Speaker 2: us praise God for a successful Vacational Bible School workshop
- 22:02Speaker 2: which was held by the Children's Ministry yesterday right here
- 22:07Speaker 2: at church. Let's praise God for the volunteers and the
- 22:11Speaker 2: KBC interns who have been incorporated to help with the program.
- 22:19Speaker 2: Then thirdly, let us praise God for the journey's message
- 22:23Speaker 2: extended to our pastor, Mundulambewe, and his family who have
- 22:28Speaker 2: traveled to Harare, Zimbabwe, and who this morning be preaching
- 22:33Speaker 2: at Berean Reformed Baptist Church. They will be in Zimbabwe
- 22:37Speaker 2: for approximately two weeks and they return next week. So
- 22:44Speaker 2: they left on Thursday last week and they return next week.
- 22:49Speaker 2: So let us pray for the success of his preaching
- 22:52Speaker 2: itinerary whilst there and also his safety and the safety
- 22:56Speaker 2: of his family whilst they are on vacation with him. Fourthly,
- 23:04Speaker 2: let us thank God for the successful ordination of our
- 23:08Speaker 2: brother Jonathan Intani, which took place last week at Kafiwa
- 23:13Speaker 2: Reformed Baptist Church. Let's pray for God's blessing on his
- 23:17Speaker 2: pastoral ministry and his gelling with the eldership there and
- 23:23Speaker 2: indeed the establishment and the growth of Kafiwa Reformed Baptist Church.
- 23:31Speaker 2: Then fifthly, let's thank God for the baptism classes which
- 23:35Speaker 2: have been concluded with all the candidates participating. Let's continue
- 23:42Speaker 2: to pray that God may undertake for us during the
- 23:47Speaker 2: actual baptism which is slated for the 20th of August
- 23:53Speaker 2: 2023 which is two Sundays from today.
- 23:57Speaker 1: Then by way of.
- 23:58Speaker 2: Petition, Let's pray for the annual Reformed Conference that will
- 24:04Speaker 2: take place in the final week of August. Let us
- 24:08Speaker 2: pray for the preparations to go smoothly and for the
- 24:11Speaker 2: ministry of God's word by the various speakers, including the
- 24:17Speaker 2: main speaker, Pastor Jeremy Walker, who is coming in from
- 24:21Speaker 2: the United Kingdom. Then let's also continue to pray for
- 24:28Speaker 2: the children's ministry members, volunteers, the KBC interns, as they
- 24:34Speaker 2: work together in the background to finalize on the logistics
- 24:37Speaker 2: programs and activities and indeed other preparations in readiness for
- 24:43Speaker 2: the vacation of Bible school due this week from Thursday,
- 24:47Speaker 2: 10th August to Saturday, 12th August. Let's pray that God's
- 24:56Speaker 2: grace and strength will abound. Let's also pray for the
- 25:01Speaker 2: fruit of God's word among the children who will be
- 25:05Speaker 2: in attendance during the program. Then finally, let's continue to
- 25:10Speaker 2: pray for the Lord's leading as we work towards establishing
- 25:15Speaker 2: a diaconate here at Hillview Baptist Church. May he raise
- 25:20Speaker 2: faithful men from among us for the task of saving
- 25:23Speaker 2: him in this office. as we proceed with the nominations
- 25:27Speaker 2: next week, Sunday. And may it be an outcome that
- 25:31Speaker 2: will be one of much prayer, soul-searching, and indeed thought
- 25:38Speaker 2: on our part.
- 25:39Speaker 1: Let us pray.
- 25:46Speaker 2: Our great God and Father who is in heaven, We
- 25:51Speaker 2: want to thank you that you are high and lifted up.
- 25:56Speaker 2: We want to thank you that you are deserving of
- 25:59Speaker 2: the highest praise, O Lord, from lowly creatures such as ourselves.
- 26:05Speaker 2: We thank you, O Lord, that indeed, like we read
- 26:09Speaker 2: earlier on, that it is fitting, O Lord, to bow
- 26:12Speaker 2: down and worship you, O Lord. It is fitting, O Lord,
- 26:17Speaker 2: that we kneel before you, O Lord, our maker. Because, Lord,
- 26:22Speaker 2: we can do nothing less in terms of bringing worship
- 26:27Speaker 2: to you, O Lord. And yet, O God, you know
- 26:30Speaker 2: our hearts. You know, O Lord, that so often we
- 26:34Speaker 2: are prone to wander. We are prone to leave the
- 26:37Speaker 2: God who has loved us with an everlasting love. And
- 26:41Speaker 2: so our plea this morning, O Lord, as we come
- 26:44Speaker 2: before you, is that you might not deal with us
- 26:48Speaker 2: according to according to the manner of our sins, O Lord,
- 26:53Speaker 2: but may you be gracious to deal with us in
- 26:56Speaker 2: the bounty of your grace and indeed in the plenteousness
- 27:00Speaker 2: of your mercies, O Lord. And grant, dear Lord, that
- 27:03Speaker 2: as we appear and present ourselves before you in this way,
- 27:07Speaker 2: you will be gracious, O Lord, to receive our pleas,
- 27:12Speaker 2: to receive the cries, to receive these requests, O God,
- 27:16Speaker 2: that we bring before your.
- 27:18Speaker 1: Throne of grace.
- 27:19Speaker 2: We ask, O Lord, that you will be pleased, O God,
- 27:22Speaker 2: to attend with us, O Lord, as we continue in
- 27:26Speaker 2: the worship of you this morning, O God, that we
- 27:29Speaker 2: may render acceptable worship in your sight, O Lord, pleasing
- 27:34Speaker 2: and acceptable before you, the most holy God.
- 27:39Speaker 1: Consider it a privilege, we count it a great joy,
- 27:42Speaker 1: O Lord.
- 27:43Speaker 2: That indeed we may appear before you and bring our
- 27:47Speaker 2: various items of thanks and our various items of petition
- 27:52Speaker 2: before you, knowing, O God, that you are more inclined
- 27:55Speaker 2: to listen to us, O Lord, than we ourselves are
- 27:59Speaker 2: willing to pray. For this, O Lord, we pray that
- 28:01Speaker 2: you might have mercy on us as indeed come before
- 28:05Speaker 2: you in this manner. Great God and Father of Glory,
- 28:09Speaker 2: we want to thank you for the pre-teen and the
- 28:13Speaker 2: teen classes that took place yesterday.
- 28:16Speaker 1: For both the boys and the girls.
- 28:19Speaker 2: We thank you for what the ladies are doing with
- 28:21Speaker 2: the girls and the skills, O Lord, that they are
- 28:24Speaker 2: passing on to them. And also for the way they
- 28:27Speaker 2: are sharing your word in very informal settings. We pray,
- 28:32Speaker 2: O Lord, that you will be pleased, O God, to
- 28:34Speaker 2: bless that effort. and that these girls, O Lord, will
- 28:38Speaker 2: be pointed to you, O Lord, in a manner that
- 28:41Speaker 2: will cause them to be established in the most holy faith,
- 28:45Speaker 2: O God, to grow in you, O Lord, and indeed
- 28:48Speaker 2: to produce fruit that is befitting of repentance, fruit, O Lord,
- 28:53Speaker 2: that's acceptable in your sight. We also want to thank
- 28:58Speaker 2: you for what the teen and the preteen boys are
- 29:03Speaker 2: currently going through, O Lord, Indeed, as they continue in
- 29:07Speaker 2: their studies and the review of the pilgrim's progress, we
- 29:11Speaker 2: thank you for what the team was doing with the boys,
- 29:14Speaker 2: and we want to commend them into your hands, Holy Father,
- 29:18Speaker 2: that you would be pleased also to speak to the boys, particularly,
- 29:22Speaker 2: O Lord, in bringing to light, O God, just who
- 29:26Speaker 2: you are and what you have done for us in
- 29:29Speaker 2: your Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, as captured in the
- 29:33Speaker 2: book that they are currently reviewing. And so Father, we
- 29:36Speaker 2: pray that may you be pleased also to speak to
- 29:40Speaker 2: the boys in this way. We want to thank you, Father,
- 29:45Speaker 2: also for the journey's message that you extended to Pastor
- 29:51Speaker 2: Mwendo Lambewe and his family who have traveled to Harare
- 29:56Speaker 2: in Zimbabwe. We want to thank you, O Lord, for
- 29:59Speaker 2: their hosts who are with them at this point. We
- 30:03Speaker 2: want to thank you also for the fact that he's
- 30:07Speaker 2: already engaged in his preaching itinerary whilst there, and this
- 30:11Speaker 2: morning he will be preaching at Berrian Reformed Baptist Church.
- 30:16Speaker 2: We pray, dear Lord, that you will be pleased to
- 30:18Speaker 2: undertake for him giving him your grace, O Lord, giving
- 30:24Speaker 2: him your spirit, O Lord, to rest upon him in
- 30:27Speaker 2: a special way, O God, and that he may preach
- 30:30Speaker 2: to your people as a man who has been spoken
- 30:33Speaker 2: to by God himself, and that when he divides your way,
- 30:38Speaker 2: O Lord, grant, dear Lord, that it will have effect,
- 30:42Speaker 2: and indeed it will have an impact upon the people
- 30:45Speaker 2: to whom he's been assigned to preach. Pray, O Lord,
- 30:49Speaker 2: that as you use him in this way, may you cause,
- 30:52Speaker 2: O Lord, that he too will not miss his blessing
- 30:56Speaker 2: from you, O Lord, as you use him as a
- 30:58Speaker 2: vessel for this purpose at Berrien Reformed Baptist Church.
- 31:04Speaker 1: We also pray for the safety of.
- 31:05Speaker 2: The family, O God, as they will continue in Zimbabwe
- 31:09Speaker 2: after his preaching sessions for a few more days, that,
- 31:11Speaker 2: O God, you may be with them whilst they are
- 31:14Speaker 2: there until the day that they fly back to Lusaka.
- 31:19Speaker 2: We pray, dear Lord, that you'll be able to undertake
- 31:21Speaker 2: for them and that you might be able to make
- 31:24Speaker 2: a way for them in the various challenges and indeed
- 31:28Speaker 2: in the various aspects of their vacation program.
- 31:33Speaker 4: In Harare.
- 31:35Speaker 2: Our Father who is in heaven, we do not only
- 31:39Speaker 2: want to thank you for our pastor in this way.
- 31:42Speaker 2: We want to thank you also for Jonathan Intani who
- 31:45Speaker 2: was ordained as pastor of Kafiwe Reformed Baptist Church last
- 31:51Speaker 2: week on Sunday.
- 31:53Speaker 1: We want to pray for him that indeed.
- 31:55Speaker 2: May you cause your spirit to rest upon him in
- 31:59Speaker 2: your very own special way. Use him or Father as
- 32:02Speaker 2: a fitting vessel in your vineyard that he will be
- 32:06Speaker 2: able to proclaim your word in the power of your spirit,
- 32:13Speaker 2: O Lord, in simplicity and yet with boldness as he
- 32:17Speaker 2: proclaims your word in that congregation and indeed in the
- 32:21Speaker 2: communities around Kafiwe. We praise you and thank you for
- 32:27Speaker 2: the eldership that is found already in place there. We ask,
- 32:31Speaker 2: O Lord, that you help him gel with them, that
- 32:34Speaker 2: they'll be able to work together as brothers, work together
- 32:38Speaker 2: in fellowship, work together in harmony and in unity of purpose,
- 32:43Speaker 2: O Lord, in seeking the honor and glory of your
- 32:47Speaker 2: name in his pastoral ministry. And indeed, as you continue
- 32:51Speaker 2: to sustain and to lead that church, O Father. We
- 32:56Speaker 2: thank you, O Lord, for him, and we thank you
- 33:00Speaker 2: for his family, and we thank you, O Lord, for
- 33:03Speaker 2: the fact that we do have these fraternal relations with
- 33:08Speaker 2: that church, and we continue to pray, dear Lord, that
- 33:11Speaker 2: you will continue to bless Kathua Reformed Baptist Church, a
- 33:15Speaker 2: church which has had no pastor for a number of
- 33:18Speaker 2: years now until this point. And so we pray that
- 33:22Speaker 2: may you cause your blessing to rest. Indeed, upon that congregation,
- 33:27Speaker 2: that your church may grow, O Lord, not only in number,
- 33:31Speaker 2: O Lord, but even in its effectiveness for the gospel,
- 33:35Speaker 2: in the proclamation of your gospel, and indeed in the accurate.
- 33:39Speaker 1: Teaching and preaching of your word, O Lord.
- 33:44Speaker 2: Indeed, we also want to thank you, O Father, for
- 33:48Speaker 2: what you are doing right here in our Mid-East. Think
- 33:52Speaker 2: of the workshop that took place yesterday for the Vacational
- 33:57Speaker 2: Bible School. We thank you for the organizing team and
- 34:01Speaker 2: what it is doing. And we continue to commend them
- 34:04Speaker 2: into your hands, O Lord, together with all the teachers
- 34:08Speaker 2: in the children's ministry, together with all the volunteers who
- 34:11Speaker 2: have come on board, including the KBC interns who will
- 34:15Speaker 2: be helping out during the Vacational Bible School, that, O Lord,
- 34:18Speaker 2: may they be vessels in your hands as it were
- 34:22Speaker 2: for this program, O Lord, that you might be pleased,
- 34:26Speaker 2: O God, to use them to the honor and glory
- 34:29Speaker 2: of your name during the program, that they may be vessels,
- 34:33Speaker 2: O Lord, of your word, vessels of your grace in
- 34:37Speaker 2: their speech and in their conduct, O Lord, both to
- 34:39Speaker 2: the children and to the parents, that your name might
- 34:42Speaker 2: not be blasphemed, O Lord, as they go about this
- 34:46Speaker 2: task that you've entrusted to them. But much more, we
- 34:50Speaker 2: do want to pray, O Lord, even for the children
- 34:53Speaker 2: that guardians and parents of this church and indeed outside
- 34:57Speaker 2: this church will bring for that program, O Lord, that
- 35:00Speaker 2: you help them, O Lord, be attentive to your word,
- 35:03Speaker 2: that you give them ears to listen. ears, O Lord,
- 35:07Speaker 2: to be curious, O Lord, to be inquisitive about the
- 35:11Speaker 2: things that are delivered to them, that you'll be pleased,
- 35:14Speaker 2: O Lord, to use them in a way, O God,
- 35:17Speaker 2: that will draw them to yourself, in a way, O God,
- 35:21Speaker 2: that will establish them in your word, O God, that
- 35:25Speaker 2: they may find delight in the study of your word,
- 35:28Speaker 2: they may find delight, O God, in hearing your word
- 35:32Speaker 2: taught to them and that they'll find it a joy
- 35:35Speaker 2: and a delight to reduce to practice, O Lord, what
- 35:39Speaker 2: they are hearing and indeed learning, O Lord, from the
- 35:42Speaker 2: instruction of your word. We want to thank you, O Lord,
- 35:47Speaker 2: and trust you that you'll be pleased to undertake for
- 35:51Speaker 2: the children's ministry in this program, O Lord, which begins
- 35:56Speaker 2: this Thursday. our Father who is in heaven, we indeed
- 36:01Speaker 2: also want to thank you for another program taking place
- 36:04Speaker 2: right here at Hillview, O Lord, even as the baptismal
- 36:08Speaker 2: classes are coming to an end. We thank you for
- 36:13Speaker 2: Elder Makai who has been instructing and teaching the baptismal candidates,
- 36:19Speaker 2: O God, and the work that he has done, O Lord,
- 36:22Speaker 2: with the candidates. We praise you and thank you for
- 36:25Speaker 2: each and every one of the candidates who were here
- 36:29Speaker 2: have been participating actively, O Lord, in their lessons and
- 36:34Speaker 2: sessions that they have held in the past month. We
- 36:38Speaker 2: therefore want to praise you that now they've come to
- 36:40Speaker 2: the end of the road and now await the date,
- 36:44Speaker 2: O Lord, set for their baptism. We praise you and
- 36:47Speaker 2: thank you for this task which has been completed and
- 36:51Speaker 2: we continue to ask, O Father, that even in this
- 36:54Speaker 2: period of waiting for the baptismal date, May you be pleased,
- 36:58Speaker 2: O God, to continue to speak to the minds and
- 37:01Speaker 2: to the hearts of the baptismal candidates about yourself. Help
- 37:05Speaker 2: them that every time they open the pages of scripture,
- 37:08Speaker 2: may it be, O God, that they hear your voice
- 37:11Speaker 2: speaking to their hearts, speaking to them about what this
- 37:15Speaker 2: really means, O God, and indeed what it signifies for
- 37:18Speaker 2: everyone and anyone, O God, that professes your name, that
- 37:23Speaker 2: claims to be a Christian or father. And so we
- 37:26Speaker 2: pray that may you use these coming few weeks leading
- 37:31Speaker 2: to their baptism as a period of introspection, a period,
- 37:36Speaker 2: O Lord, that they will desire to grow closer to
- 37:39Speaker 2: you both in the word and in prayer, O Lord,
- 37:42Speaker 2: in seeking your face, O Lord. And so we pray,
- 37:46Speaker 2: O Lord, that you will be honored and you will
- 37:48Speaker 2: be glorified, O Lord, even when that day comes as
- 37:54Speaker 2: they make that public testimony, O Lord, of what it means,
- 37:59Speaker 2: O Lord, to be buried with Christ and to be
- 38:03Speaker 2: risen to newness of life in him or further. We
- 38:06Speaker 2: therefore thank you, O Lord, for what has been done.
- 38:09Speaker 2: And indeed, we thank you for each and every one
- 38:12Speaker 2: of the candidates that is comprised in this class. Our
- 38:18Speaker 2: great God and Father in heaven, we also want to
- 38:20Speaker 2: think of another program to which we also affiliate as
- 38:25Speaker 2: a church. We think of the family conference set for
- 38:30Speaker 2: the end of August, We thank you for the team
- 38:35Speaker 2: and what it is doing in putting together all the
- 38:38Speaker 2: logistics and everything that is required to have that conference
- 38:43Speaker 2: take place smoothly and efficiently. We therefore want to commend
- 38:49Speaker 2: and commit each one of them into your hands, O Lord,
- 38:53Speaker 2: that you will be pleased to undertake for them, that
- 38:55Speaker 2: you will be pleased, O Lord, to lead them by
- 38:58Speaker 2: your spirit in this noble task. But much more, we
- 39:02Speaker 2: want to thank you for the speakers that you've raised
- 39:04Speaker 2: for this occasion, including the main speaker, Jeremy Walker. We pray,
- 39:10Speaker 2: dear Lord, that may you cause that your spirit will
- 39:13Speaker 2: rest on each one of them in a special way
- 39:16Speaker 2: and that they'll be used effectively for the gospel, that
- 39:19Speaker 2: they'll be used effectively in order to bring your word
- 39:23Speaker 2: home to everyone that will be in attendance at the
- 39:26Speaker 2: Dream Valley venue, O God.
- 39:29Speaker 1: We ask O Lord, that indeed may you.
- 39:31Speaker 2: Prepare them in this period leading to the conference, and
- 39:34Speaker 2: may you grant, dear Lord, that even amongst ourselves and
- 39:37Speaker 2: our sister churches, there will be this willingness to be
- 39:41Speaker 2: in attendance at the family conference, and to avail ourselves,
- 39:45Speaker 2: as it were, O Lord, to the preaching of your word,
- 39:48Speaker 2: that we may hear you speak to us, even in
- 39:51Speaker 2: that conference, O Lord, and that it will be a
- 39:54Speaker 2: blessing not only to hear you speak to us in
- 39:57Speaker 2: the proclamation of your word, but that, O Lord, it
- 40:00Speaker 2: also be a joy to fellowship with others of like mind,
- 40:04Speaker 2: O Lord, in our faith in Christ. And so, Father,
- 40:08Speaker 2: we pray that may you bless the conference to the
- 40:11Speaker 2: honor and glory of your name, that indeed you might
- 40:14Speaker 2: be pleased, O Lord, to bless all the preparations that
- 40:18Speaker 2: are being put together at this point in time leading
- 40:22Speaker 2: to that conference. Our Father who is in heaven, we
- 40:28Speaker 2: also want to pray, asking, O Lord, that you might
- 40:34Speaker 2: undertake for us as a congregation, as we think of
- 40:38Speaker 2: putting men into the office of the diaconate in the
- 40:42Speaker 2: coming few weeks, particularly thinking of the nomination, which is
- 40:46Speaker 2: due for next Sunday. We pray, dear Lord, that you
- 40:49Speaker 2: help us, each one, to be constant, to be, as
- 40:53Speaker 2: it were, instant in our closets in bringing this item
- 40:56Speaker 2: of prayer before you, that, O Lord, you might be
- 40:59Speaker 2: pleased to hearken to our cries and be pleased, O Lord,
- 41:03Speaker 2: to lead us to those men that you are raising
- 41:05Speaker 2: for the moment, those men, O God, that you have
- 41:08Speaker 2: prepared for this task, O God, that these men, O Lord,
- 41:13Speaker 2: will be men that are indeed chosen of you, men,
- 41:16Speaker 2: O Lord, that are appointed of thee, men, oh God,
- 41:19Speaker 2: that you have been dealing with in the background leading
- 41:23Speaker 2: to this moment. And so we pray as a congregation
- 41:27Speaker 2: that you open our hearts and enlighten our understanding as
- 41:31Speaker 2: we look within the congregation, oh Lord, and just see
- 41:35Speaker 2: how you lead us, oh Lord, at that point, in
- 41:39Speaker 2: that occasion, in that process, oh Lord, of nominating men
- 41:46Speaker 2: for the office. We pray that you'll be honored again
- 41:49Speaker 2: in the whole process. We pray, O God, that again
- 41:52Speaker 2: that you'll be pleased to glorify your name through the
- 41:55Speaker 2: entire process and indeed through the men, the vessels that
- 41:59Speaker 2: you shall choose for the purpose to take up office
- 42:04Speaker 2: as deacons. We ask, O Lord, that you'll be pleased
- 42:07Speaker 2: to undertake for us in this way as a congregation
- 42:10Speaker 2: that indeed your name will continue and the glories of
- 42:15Speaker 2: who you are and what you've done for us in Christ,
- 42:17Speaker 2: who continue to be proclaimed both here at Hillview and
- 42:22Speaker 2: even beyond. And now, Father, as we come back to
- 42:27Speaker 2: what is here before us, we want to thank you
- 42:31Speaker 2: for the man you have appointed to bring your word
- 42:34Speaker 2: to us this morning.
- 42:35Speaker 1: We want to think of our brother, Dr.
- 42:38Speaker 2: Vodibokam, as you'll be stepping into this pulpit shortly, O God,
- 42:43Speaker 2: that you be pleased to cause your spirit to rest
- 42:46Speaker 2: upon him in your very own special way. Enlighten him,
- 42:50Speaker 2: O God. Give him the strength and the grace he needs,
- 42:53Speaker 2: O Lord, for the purpose. Grant, dear Lord, that he
- 42:56Speaker 2: may know boldness and utterance that comes from the inspiration
- 43:00Speaker 2: of your Holy Spirit, O God, that he may do
- 43:03Speaker 2: so in power. He may do so as a man
- 43:06Speaker 2: that you have raised to us to bring a word
- 43:10Speaker 2: in season to each one of us here gathered. to
- 43:13Speaker 2: those needing encouragement to know encouragement, to those needing rebuke
- 43:18Speaker 2: to be rebuked, to those needing correction, correction, and those
- 43:21Speaker 2: needing instruction to be instructed. And so we pray, O Lord,
- 43:25Speaker 2: that may you use him as a fitting vessel for
- 43:29Speaker 2: this purpose, O Lord, in the proclamation of your word,
- 43:32Speaker 2: that indeed your word will be a blessing to each
- 43:35Speaker 2: one of us gathered to hear you speak to us
- 43:39Speaker 2: this morning. But much more also, we pray that you
- 43:42Speaker 2: may not forget your servant as he proclaims your word
- 43:45Speaker 2: to us, that he himself will be blessed of you,
- 43:49Speaker 2: O Lord, that he will know replenishment of energy when
- 43:52Speaker 2: he's done, and that he will know the joy of
- 43:55Speaker 2: service of you, O Lord, in your vineyard. And so
- 43:59Speaker 2: we pray that you'll be pleased to glorify and indeed
- 44:02Speaker 2: to honor your name, O Father, in the proclamation of
- 44:06Speaker 2: your word. We want to thank you for Sam Mundula
- 44:11Speaker 2: who continues to lead us in worship. Pray, dear Lord,
- 44:14Speaker 2: that you enable him to do so with your leading,
- 44:18Speaker 2: O God, that indeed we'll continue to sing songs and
- 44:22Speaker 2: hymns and Psalms, O God, in a manner, O God,
- 44:26Speaker 2: that is befitting of your holy name, in a manner
- 44:29Speaker 2: that is befitting of.
- 44:34Speaker 1: Your majesty, O God.
- 44:36Speaker 2: We pray, dear Lord, that you will help us also
- 44:39Speaker 2: derive joy, O God, in the proclamation of your word,
- 44:42Speaker 2: and know that, O Lord, you deserve the highest worship,
- 44:47Speaker 2: even from lowly creatures such as ourselves. And so, Father,
- 44:52Speaker 2: be pleased to hear us in these things and be
- 44:55Speaker 2: pleased to undertake for us, for we commit all these
- 44:58Speaker 2: things through that most blessed and worthy name of your Son,
- 45:03Speaker 2: our Savior, even the Lord Jesus Christ.
- 45:06Speaker 14: Amen.
- 45:31Speaker 4: Good morning church.
- 45:33Speaker 15: My name is Ndot Dana and I will be leading
- 45:35Speaker 15: you in our consecutive Bible reading. If you do not
- 45:41Speaker 15: have your Bible, I think you can indicate to the
- 45:43Speaker 15: ushers by raising your hand and the Bible will be
- 45:47Speaker 15: available to you. I'll be reading from 2 Chronicles chapter 5.
- 45:56Speaker 15: 2 Chronicles chapter 5. I'll read from the ESV, and
- 46:18Speaker 15: the Word of God reads, Thus all the work that
- 46:22Speaker 15: Solomon did for the house of the Lord was finished,
- 46:25Speaker 15: and Solomon brought in the things that David his father
- 46:28Speaker 15: had dedicated, and stored the silver and the gold and
- 46:32Speaker 15: all the vessels in the treasuries of the house of God.
- 46:38Speaker 15: Then Solomon assembled the elders of Israel and all the
- 46:42Speaker 15: heads of the tribes, the leaders of the fathers' houses
- 46:45Speaker 15: of the people of Israel in Jerusalem, to bring up
- 46:48Speaker 15: the Ark of the Covenant of the Lord out of
- 46:51Speaker 15: the city of David, which is Zion. All the men
- 46:55Speaker 15: of Israel assembled before the king at the feast that
- 46:58Speaker 15: is in the seventh month. All the elders of Israel came,
- 47:02Speaker 15: and the Levites took up the Ark. They brought up
- 47:06Speaker 15: the Ark in the tent of meeting, and all the
- 47:09Speaker 15: holy vessels that were in the tent met. the Levitical
- 47:13Speaker 15: priests brought them up. And King Solomon and all the
- 47:17Speaker 15: congregation of Israel who had assembled before him were before
- 47:21Speaker 15: the ark, sacrificing so many sheep and oxen that they
- 47:25Speaker 15: could not be counted or numbered. Then the priests brought
- 47:28Speaker 15: the ark of the covenant of the Lord to its
- 47:31Speaker 15: place in the inner sanctuary of the house, in the
- 47:35Speaker 15: most holy place, underneath the wings of the cherubim. The
- 47:39Speaker 15: cherubim spread out their wings, over the place of the ark,
- 47:44Speaker 15: so the cherubim made a covering above the ark and
- 47:48Speaker 15: its poles. And the poles were so long that the
- 47:52Speaker 15: ends of the poles were seen from the holy place
- 47:55Speaker 15: before the inner sanctuary, but they could not be seen
- 48:00Speaker 15: from outside. And they are there to this day. There
- 48:06Speaker 15: was nothing in the ark except the two tablets that
- 48:10Speaker 15: Moses put there at Horeb, where the Lord made a
- 48:14Speaker 15: covenant with the people of Israel, when they came out
- 48:17Speaker 15: of Egypt.
- 48:18Speaker 4: When the priests came out.
- 48:19Speaker 16: Of the holy place, for all the priests who were
- 48:22Speaker 16: present had consecrated themselves without regard to their division, and
- 48:31Speaker 16: all the Levitical singers, Asaph, Haman, Jeduthun, and their sons
- 48:39Speaker 16: and kinsmen arrayed in fine linen and cymbals and harps
- 48:43Speaker 16: and lyre stood east of the altar with 120 priests
- 48:47Speaker 16: who were trumpeters and it was the duty of the
- 48:50Speaker 16: trumpeters and singers to make themselves heard in unison in
- 48:55Speaker 16: praise and thanksgiving to the Lord when the song was
- 49:01Speaker 16: raised with trumpets and cymbals and other musical instruments in
- 49:05Speaker 16: praise to the Lord for he is good For he
- 49:09Speaker 16: is good, for his steadfast love endures forever. The house
- 49:15Speaker 16: of the Lord was filled with a cloud. so the
- 49:20Speaker 16: priest could not stand to minister because of the cloud,
- 49:24Speaker 16: for the glory of the Lord filled the house of God.
- 49:28Speaker 16: This is the word of God.
- 49:41Speaker 6: Bringing God's word this morning is Dr.
- 49:43Speaker 4: Vody Bokam.
- 49:44Speaker 3: But before he mounts the pulpit, I request us to
- 49:46Speaker 3: stand as we sing our hand over him to the
- 49:50Speaker 3: one from the great sims. When I survey the wondrous cross,
- 49:54Speaker 3: a very wonderful hymn penned down by Isaac Watts.
- 49:57Speaker 6: Shall we all rise?
- 50:24Speaker 13: On which the Prince of Glory died. My riches gained, I.
- 50:40Speaker 5: Count the loss.
- 51:08Speaker 12: I sacrifice them to His bread.
- 51:14Speaker 8: Seek on His head, His hands, His feet.
- 51:23Speaker 17: Sorrow and love flow me no doubt. Dear, there's such
- 51:32Speaker 17: love and All those from far so rich a town
- 51:44Speaker 17: Through the whole realm of nature mine But where I'm.
- 51:54Speaker 12: Not required to.
- 52:03Speaker 5: Oh, divine.
- 52:07Speaker 12: She burns my soul.
- 52:14Speaker 5: My life, my all. Hallelujah.
- 52:22Speaker 12: Hallelujah. Hallelujah.
- 52:27Speaker 5: Hallelujah. Hallelujah. Hallelujah. Demands my soul.
- 52:40Speaker 8: My life, my.
- 52:44Speaker 5: All.
- 53:00Speaker 4: We noted on last week, that it's rare for us
- 53:06Speaker 4: to look at the crucifixion of Jesus outside of Good Friday. Well,
- 53:14Speaker 4: it's even more rare to look at the crucifixion of
- 53:18Speaker 4: Jesus two Sundays in a row. That is precisely what
- 53:23Speaker 4: we are doing here as we continue in John chapter 19.
- 53:27Speaker 4: If you have your Bibles with you, turn with me
- 53:30Speaker 4: to John 19. beginning in verse 28. If you remember
- 53:39Speaker 4: on last week, we looked at the first half of
- 53:45Speaker 4: John's presentation of the crucifixion and the significance of the
- 53:52Speaker 4: way that he presented that. This week we'll look at
- 53:56Speaker 4: the second half of his presentation of that event. John
- 54:04Speaker 4: 19 beginning at verse 28. We read, After this, Jesus,
- 54:15Speaker 4: knowing that all was now finished, said to fulfill the scripture,
- 54:20Speaker 4: I thirst. A jar full of sour wine stood there.
- 54:26Speaker 4: So they put a sponge full of the sour wine
- 54:29Speaker 4: on a hyssop branch and held it up to his mouth.
- 54:33Speaker 4: When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, It
- 54:37Speaker 4: is finished. And he bowed his head and gave up
- 54:41Speaker 4: his spirit. Since it was the day of preparation, and
- 54:47Speaker 4: so that the bodies would not remain on the cross
- 54:50Speaker 4: on the Sabbath, for the Sabbath was a high day,
- 54:55Speaker 4: excuse me, for that Sabbath was a high day, the
- 54:59Speaker 4: Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken and
- 55:03Speaker 4: that they might be taken away. So the soldiers came
- 55:07Speaker 4: and broke the legs of the first and of the
- 55:09Speaker 4: other who had been crucified with him. But when they
- 55:13Speaker 4: came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead,
- 55:18Speaker 4: they did not break his legs. But one of the
- 55:21Speaker 4: soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once
- 55:25Speaker 4: there came out blood and water. He who saw it
- 55:31Speaker 4: has borne witness. His testimony is true, and he knows
- 55:37Speaker 4: that he is telling the truth, that you also may believe.
- 55:41Speaker 4: For these things took place that the scripture might be fulfilled.
- 55:48Speaker 4: Not one of his bones will be broken. And again,
- 55:53Speaker 4: another scripture says, they will look on him whom they
- 55:58Speaker 4: have pierced. Let's pray. Gracious God and our Father, we
- 56:09Speaker 4: thank you and we praise you for your word. And
- 56:13Speaker 4: particularly we thank you for the revelation of the crucifixion
- 56:22Speaker 4: of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. This place that
- 56:27Speaker 4: stands as the most significant moment And all of the scriptures,
- 56:32Speaker 4: this place that all of the scriptures point to and
- 56:37Speaker 4: reflect upon. This place that gives all the scripture its meaning.
- 56:45Speaker 4: Because all that you have revealed to us has its
- 56:50Speaker 4: significance because of the death of our Lord and our
- 56:55Speaker 4: Savior and our Master and our soon coming King. Grant
- 57:00Speaker 4: by your grace that we might reflect rightly on the
- 57:05Speaker 4: death of the Son of Man. We pray this in
- 57:10Speaker 4: his name and for his sake.
- 57:12Speaker 5: Amen.
- 57:15Speaker 4: Indeed, the death of the Son of Man. Why is
- 57:21Speaker 4: this significant? Why is this important? We saw in last
- 57:26Speaker 4: week some of the things that John was trying to
- 57:28Speaker 4: communicate to us there's four of the things that I
- 57:31Speaker 4: want to lift from this really second half of his
- 57:35Speaker 4: telling of the crucifixion. The first is this, that the
- 57:40Speaker 4: death of the Son of Man was an atonement for sin.
- 57:45Speaker 4: We saw last week that he took away our guilt,
- 57:47Speaker 4: but I want you to see this week that this
- 57:49Speaker 4: is an atonement for sin. Look at the words that
- 57:52Speaker 4: John chooses. And remember, John doesn't choose to tell us
- 57:57Speaker 4: the story of the crucifixion in the exact same way
- 58:01Speaker 4: and with the exact same words that the other gospel
- 58:04Speaker 4: authors choose. He chooses very specific things. For example, there
- 58:09Speaker 4: are seven words, if you will, seven statements of Jesus
- 58:15Speaker 4: on the cross as he's being crucified. John only gives
- 58:17Speaker 4: us three of them. He doesn't give us every statement
- 58:21Speaker 4: that comes from Jesus. And the statements that he does
- 58:24Speaker 4: give us, he gives us for very specific reasons. purposes.
- 58:29Speaker 4: So as we look here, one of the things that
- 58:32Speaker 4: John wants us to see is that the death of
- 58:35Speaker 4: Jesus was an atonement for sin. Verse 28, after this, Jesus,
- 58:42Speaker 4: knowing that all was now finished, said to fulfill the scripture,
- 58:47Speaker 4: I thirst. A jar full of sour wine stood there,
- 58:50Speaker 4: so they put the sponge full of sour wine on
- 58:53Speaker 4: a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth. When
- 58:56Speaker 4: Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, it is finished,
- 59:00Speaker 4: and bowed his head and gave up his spirit. Again,
- 59:04Speaker 4: if you know the story of the crucifixion, you know
- 59:08Speaker 4: that there are a few things here. that are left out.
- 59:12Speaker 4: When he cries out, we don't see that here. When
- 59:17Speaker 4: he says, Father, into your hands I commit my spirit,
- 59:20Speaker 4: we don't see that here. When he says, Father, forgive them,
- 59:23Speaker 4: for they know not what they do, we don't see
- 59:25Speaker 4: that here. It's not necessary to for John to communicate
- 59:30Speaker 4: all of those things in order for John to make
- 59:33Speaker 4: his point. Two statements, I thirst and it is finished.
- 59:41Speaker 4: And then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
- 59:46Speaker 4: Since it was the day of preparation and so that
- 59:50Speaker 4: the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath,
- 59:54Speaker 4: and here's the key, for that Sabbath was a high
- 59:58Speaker 4: day The Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be
- 1:00:02Speaker 4: broken and that they might be taken away. That Sabbath
- 1:00:08Speaker 4: was a high day. Here's what John says in that
- 1:00:15Speaker 4: simple statement. Jesus was crucified right before Passover. This wasn't
- 1:00:24Speaker 4: just a Sabbath day. It was enough that bodies would
- 1:00:30Speaker 4: be hanging on a tree as a curse for that individual,
- 1:00:36Speaker 4: but also as a curse upon the land on the Sabbath.
- 1:00:41Speaker 4: But it was an even more significant problem for bodies
- 1:00:46Speaker 4: to be hanging on trees as a curse, again, Deuteronomy 23, 21,
- 1:00:51Speaker 4: as a curse on a high holy day. And the Sabbath...
- 1:00:56Speaker 4: that would have been on the Passover, would have been
- 1:00:59Speaker 4: a high holy day, the highest of holy days. So
- 1:01:05Speaker 4: when John gives us this little bit of information, what
- 1:01:08Speaker 4: John is communicating to us is that the Son of
- 1:01:11Speaker 4: Man is being put to death on the Passover. Why
- 1:01:17Speaker 4: is that so significant? It's so significant because what was
- 1:01:24Speaker 4: going to happen right after Jesus is crucified, was that
- 1:01:30Speaker 4: everyone would go and make preparation to sit and observe
- 1:01:35Speaker 4: the Passover meal. And as they sat and observed the
- 1:01:39Speaker 4: Passover meal, they would tell the story of the night
- 1:01:43Speaker 4: that ended their time in Egypt. They would tell the
- 1:01:48Speaker 4: story of the night when the death angel came to
- 1:01:51Speaker 4: Egypt and finally broke the back of Pharaoh's resistance. Because
- 1:01:56Speaker 4: he killed the firstborn in every house except except for
- 1:02:06Speaker 4: the houses that slaughtered a lamb without blemish and took
- 1:02:13Speaker 4: the blood of the lamb with a hyssop branch and
- 1:02:19Speaker 4: spread the blood of the lamb over the doorpost so
- 1:02:23Speaker 4: that because of the death of the lamb and because
- 1:02:27Speaker 4: of the blood of the lamb, the death angel would
- 1:02:30Speaker 4: pass over those houses. On the day before they sat
- 1:02:41Speaker 4: to celebrate that this year, the one of whom John
- 1:02:46Speaker 4: said in the beginning of his gospel, behold, the lamb
- 1:02:50Speaker 4: of God comes who takes away the sins of the world,
- 1:02:56Speaker 4: was crucified. And had sour wine given to him. Not
- 1:03:04Speaker 4: on just a stick, but a hyssop branch. So that
- 1:03:10Speaker 4: on this day, everything that they had ever experienced in
- 1:03:15Speaker 4: their life in that place, three times a year, coming
- 1:03:20Speaker 4: up to Jerusalem, for these high holy days, and particularly
- 1:03:26Speaker 4: at the Passover. This time, Jesus is being crucified, the
- 1:03:33Speaker 4: Lamb of God is laying down His life, and His
- 1:03:37Speaker 4: blood is being shed so that the death angel would
- 1:03:41Speaker 4: pass over all those who place their faith in Him.
- 1:03:49Speaker 4: John wants you to know that. John wants you to
- 1:03:53Speaker 4: know that the death of the Son of Man is
- 1:03:56Speaker 4: an atoning death. John wants you to know that Jesus
- 1:04:01Speaker 4: is indeed the Lamb of God who takes away the
- 1:04:05Speaker 4: sins of the world. And he takes away the sins
- 1:04:08Speaker 4: of the world because he atones for sin. He takes
- 1:04:12Speaker 4: away the sins of the world. Just like the Passover lamb.
- 1:04:21Speaker 4: Here's what's interesting. A lot of people would say, you know,
- 1:04:25Speaker 4: on the Passover, there was a death in every house,
- 1:04:27Speaker 4: but there wasn't a death in the house where they... Ah,
- 1:04:31Speaker 4: there was. There was a death in the house of everyone.
- 1:04:38Speaker 4: It was either the death of the firstborn or the
- 1:04:42Speaker 4: death of the lamb, but there was a death. Something
- 1:04:51Speaker 4: had to die. Either the firstborn or the Lamb. And
- 1:04:56Speaker 4: it's the same here when it comes to our sin.
- 1:05:00Speaker 4: All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.
- 1:05:03Speaker 4: We know that. And we know that the wages of
- 1:05:05Speaker 4: sin is death. There must be a death for sin.
- 1:05:10Speaker 4: There has to be. There is no alternative. Either the
- 1:05:16Speaker 4: death of the sinner or the death of the Lamb.
- 1:05:22Speaker 4: The death of the Son of Man atones for sin.
- 1:05:30Speaker 4: In Genesis chapter 1, or chapter 3, in verse 15,
- 1:05:34Speaker 4: we read, I will put enmity, this is a curse
- 1:05:37Speaker 4: to the serpent, between you and the woman and between
- 1:05:41Speaker 4: your offspring and her offspring. He shall bruise your head
- 1:05:45Speaker 4: and you shall bruise his heel. In other words, the
- 1:05:50Speaker 4: offspring of the woman the son of man, the offspring
- 1:05:55Speaker 4: of the woman, crushes the head of the serpent. But
- 1:06:01Speaker 4: not without his heel being bruised. He crushes the head
- 1:06:05Speaker 4: of the serpent, which means it is an ultimate death blow.
- 1:06:09Speaker 4: But his heel is bruised, which means that his blow
- 1:06:15Speaker 4: is not an ultimate death blow. Because we know that
- 1:06:19Speaker 4: the crucifixion is not the end of the story.
- 1:06:21Speaker 12: Amen?
- 1:06:25Speaker 4: Colossians chapter 2, verses 13 through 15. And you who
- 1:06:30Speaker 4: were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh,
- 1:06:36Speaker 4: God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all
- 1:06:40Speaker 4: our trespasses by canceling the record of debt that stood
- 1:06:44Speaker 4: against us with his legal demands. This he set aside,
- 1:06:49Speaker 4: nailing it to the cross. He disarmed the rulers and
- 1:06:54Speaker 4: authorities and put them to open shame by triumphing over
- 1:06:58Speaker 4: them in him. He triumphed over our adversary at the cross.
- 1:07:07Speaker 4: He nailed the sin of those who placed their faith
- 1:07:11Speaker 4: in the Lord Jesus Christ to the cross. We also
- 1:07:17Speaker 4: see this In Romans chapter 5, verses 12 through 21,
- 1:07:23Speaker 4: and Hebrews 10, 1 through 14, we don't have time
- 1:07:26Speaker 4: to go to both of these, but I want us
- 1:07:29Speaker 4: to look at the text there in Hebrews. Look in
- 1:07:33Speaker 4: Hebrews chapter 10. Hebrews chapter 10. It's a rather lengthy section,
- 1:08:00Speaker 4: but I think it's important for us to look at this.
- 1:08:05Speaker 4: Hebrews chapter 10, verse 1. For since the law has
- 1:08:12Speaker 4: but a shadow of the good things to come instead
- 1:08:15Speaker 4: of the true form of these realities, it can never,
- 1:08:19Speaker 4: by the same sacrifices that are continually offered every year,
- 1:08:24Speaker 4: make perfect those who draw near. Otherwise... would they not
- 1:08:28Speaker 4: have ceased to be offered, since the worshipers, having once
- 1:08:32Speaker 4: been cleansed, would no longer have any consciousness of sins.
- 1:08:37Speaker 4: In other words, the writer of Hebrews says, the reason
- 1:08:40Speaker 4: that the priest had to go over and over and
- 1:08:44Speaker 4: over again to offer sacrifices under the old covenant was
- 1:08:48Speaker 4: because those sacrifices did not do away with sin. But
- 1:08:57Speaker 4: in These sacrifices, there is a reminder of sin every year,
- 1:09:01Speaker 4: for it is impossible for the blood of bulls and
- 1:09:05Speaker 4: goats to take away sins. Consequently, when Christ came into
- 1:09:10Speaker 4: the world, he said, sacrifices and offerings you have not desired,
- 1:09:15Speaker 4: but a body you have prepared for me. In burnt
- 1:09:18Speaker 4: offerings and sin offerings you have taken no pleasure. Then
- 1:09:22Speaker 4: I said, Behold, I have come to do your will,
- 1:09:24Speaker 4: O God, as it is written of me in the
- 1:09:27Speaker 4: scroll of the book. When he said above, You have
- 1:09:30Speaker 4: neither desired nor taken pleasure in sacrifices and offerings and
- 1:09:35Speaker 4: burnt offerings and sin offerings. These are offered according to
- 1:09:38Speaker 4: the law. Then he added, Behold, I have come to
- 1:09:40Speaker 4: do your will. He does away with the first in
- 1:09:44Speaker 4: order to establish the second. And by that will, we
- 1:09:50Speaker 4: have been sanctified through the offering of the body of
- 1:09:54Speaker 4: Jesus once for all. The blood of bulls and lambs
- 1:10:01Speaker 4: and goats could not take away the sins of men.
- 1:10:08Speaker 4: Only a man could be a substitute for the sins
- 1:10:13Speaker 4: of men. And only a man who had no sin
- 1:10:19Speaker 4: himself to pay for could be an atoning substitute and
- 1:10:25Speaker 4: sacrifice because if that man on that tree has sins
- 1:10:29Speaker 4: of his own, then he dies for those and dies
- 1:10:34Speaker 4: eternally and has nothing left for anyone else. But when
- 1:10:40Speaker 4: the sinless son of man vicariously and voluntarily offers himself
- 1:10:46Speaker 4: up as an atonement for sin, then God can indeed
- 1:10:53Speaker 4: lay upon him, the sinless one, the sins of the
- 1:10:59Speaker 4: guilty ones, so that their sins might be atoned for.
- 1:11:08Speaker 4: But this doesn't make sense without the sacrificial system. Not
- 1:11:14Speaker 4: at all. If God does not use all of those
- 1:11:18Speaker 4: years of training his people to equate sin and sacrifice,
- 1:11:24Speaker 4: then when the Son of Man comes, when Christ comes,
- 1:11:27Speaker 4: it makes no sense that he's dying on a tree
- 1:11:30Speaker 4: at the Passover. But because of all of those years
- 1:11:34Speaker 4: of sin and sacrifice. because of all of those years
- 1:11:38Speaker 4: of being reminded that sin is costly, because of all
- 1:11:42Speaker 4: of those years of being reminded that there has to
- 1:11:45Speaker 4: be a substitute because you can't take away your own
- 1:11:48Speaker 4: sin now on this year, when the Son of Man,
- 1:11:53Speaker 4: the Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of
- 1:11:56Speaker 4: the world, is crucified at the Passover, all of those
- 1:12:03Speaker 4: other sacrifices, number one, done away with and number two
- 1:12:08Speaker 4: make perfect sense because they were foreshadowing they were pointing
- 1:12:14Speaker 4: ahead to the one sacrifice that could and would indeed
- 1:12:20Speaker 4: atone for sin secondly not only did the son of
- 1:12:27Speaker 4: man the death of the son of man atone for
- 1:12:29Speaker 4: sin but the death of the son of man was
- 1:12:32Speaker 4: confirmed and this is important his death was confirmed Verse 32.
- 1:12:40Speaker 4: So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the
- 1:12:42Speaker 4: first and of the other who had been crucified with him.
- 1:12:47Speaker 4: But when they came to Jesus and saw that he
- 1:12:49Speaker 4: was already dead, they did not break his legs. But
- 1:12:53Speaker 4: one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear,
- 1:12:57Speaker 4: and at once there came out blood and water. Listen,
- 1:13:01Speaker 4: many have tried to explain away the crucifixion of Jesus.
- 1:13:06Speaker 4: In a number of ways. And one of the ways
- 1:13:10Speaker 4: that they've tried to explain away the crucifixion is to
- 1:13:13Speaker 4: argue that Jesus didn't really die. The classic example of
- 1:13:18Speaker 4: this is the swoon theory. The swoon theory argues that
- 1:13:22Speaker 4: what happened was Jesus only appeared to be dead. That's
- 1:13:28Speaker 4: why when they took him down and put him in
- 1:13:30Speaker 4: the tomb, he eventually got back up. Eventually, he recovered.
- 1:13:38Speaker 4: and he came to and got up. There were a
- 1:13:43Speaker 4: number of problems with this, not the least of which
- 1:13:46Speaker 4: is the brutal beating that Jesus had taken, sweating drops
- 1:13:50Speaker 4: of blood the day before, not to mention the fact
- 1:13:55Speaker 4: that Jesus was hanged on the tree, crucified, beaten, scourged,
- 1:14:06Speaker 4: everything else. before he was crucified. Not to mention the
- 1:14:10Speaker 4: fact that all of this in and of itself would
- 1:14:14Speaker 4: have inflicted wounds upon him from which he would not
- 1:14:17Speaker 4: have recovered over the weekend. Amen, somebody? In addition to this,
- 1:14:26Speaker 4: you have the fact that these Roman soldiers were professional executioners.
- 1:14:35Speaker 4: They were trained and experienced in torture and murder. Add
- 1:14:44Speaker 4: to this the fact that if an executioner fails to
- 1:14:50Speaker 4: execute his prisoner, guess who's next? Here's the other problem.
- 1:15:01Speaker 4: The executioners didn't break his legs, which would have hastened
- 1:15:05Speaker 4: his death, so that he was not hanging on the
- 1:15:08Speaker 4: tree during the Passover. And it would have been one thing.
- 1:15:12Speaker 4: But again, he hangs his head, he dies. It would
- 1:15:18Speaker 4: have been one thing if they just decided not to
- 1:15:20Speaker 4: break his legs and then take him and put him
- 1:15:23Speaker 4: in the tomb. At least then you could have said, well,
- 1:15:28Speaker 4: they weren't as thorough as they could have been because
- 1:15:30Speaker 4: they didn't break his legs. However, when they didn't break
- 1:15:35Speaker 4: his legs... Instead, they took a spear and they pierced
- 1:15:40Speaker 4: him in the side. Now he's hanging up on a cross.
- 1:15:44Speaker 4: So they pierce him in the side, thrusting upwardly, puncturing
- 1:15:48Speaker 4: the pericardium, stabbing him in his heart, which is why
- 1:15:53Speaker 4: blood and water rush out of the wound in his side.
- 1:16:01Speaker 4: This did not kill him. The Bible is very clear.
- 1:16:06Speaker 4: that he laid down his life, he was already dead.
- 1:16:11Speaker 4: But though this did not kill him, it confirmed the
- 1:16:15Speaker 4: fact that he was dead. Here's the other problem with
- 1:16:25Speaker 4: the swoon theory. The idea that somehow Jesus didn't die,
- 1:16:30Speaker 4: but he suffered this brutal beating, he suffered death, from
- 1:16:35Speaker 4: sweating drops of blood and being hypotensive, not hypertensive, hypotensive
- 1:16:40Speaker 4: because of sweating drops of blood, in the midst of
- 1:16:43Speaker 4: this hypotensive, low blood pressure state, he is beaten and
- 1:16:48Speaker 4: flogged mercifully, bleeds profusely, crown of thorns on his head,
- 1:16:54Speaker 4: bleeding even more profusely, nailed to a cross, bleeding even
- 1:17:00Speaker 4: more profusely. And we're not even talking about contusions and
- 1:17:04Speaker 4: everything else that happened to him. And in addition to that,
- 1:17:07Speaker 4: he stabbed in the heart. And the swoon theory says
- 1:17:11Speaker 4: that over the course of the weekend, number one, he recovered. No.
- 1:17:20Speaker 4: And number two, he got up and moved the stones.
- 1:17:28Speaker 4: that it took a team of soldiers to put in
- 1:17:30Speaker 4: front of his tomb? No. And then thirdly, in this state,
- 1:17:37Speaker 4: he presented himself to his disciples and said, this is resurrection.
- 1:17:43Speaker 4: Don't you want it too? No. You know the other
- 1:17:53Speaker 4: glaring problem? Jesus had not died that day. He would
- 1:18:03Speaker 4: have died shortly thereafter. And there still would have been
- 1:18:08Speaker 4: a dead man in his tomb. He died. And it
- 1:18:18Speaker 4: was confirmed. Why is this significant? Two reasons. Matthew 28 says,
- 1:18:27Speaker 4: 11 to 15. We look at Matthew 28, and we
- 1:18:31Speaker 4: know about the Great Commission, but a lot of times
- 1:18:33Speaker 4: we don't pay attention to what happened right before. Matthew 28,
- 1:18:36Speaker 4: beginning verse 11. While they were going, behold, some of
- 1:18:41Speaker 4: the guard went into the city and told the chief
- 1:18:43Speaker 4: priests all that had taken place. And when they had
- 1:18:47Speaker 4: assembled with the elders and taken counsel, they gave a
- 1:18:51Speaker 4: sufficient sum of money to the soldiers and said, tell
- 1:18:54Speaker 4: people his disciples came by night and stole him away
- 1:18:58Speaker 4: while we were asleep. And if this comes to the
- 1:19:02Speaker 4: governor's ears, we will satisfy him and keep you out
- 1:19:05Speaker 4: of trouble.
- 1:19:05Speaker 12: Why?
- 1:19:06Speaker 4: Because if you are an executioner, and you don't execute
- 1:19:10Speaker 4: your prisoner, you're next. If you are a soldier guarding
- 1:19:15Speaker 4: a tomb, and the person that you're guarding, even if
- 1:19:18Speaker 4: you're guarding a jailer, you remember the Philippian jailer? When
- 1:19:22Speaker 4: Paul and Silas are in jail, and they pray at
- 1:19:24Speaker 4: about midnight, and there's an earthquake, and the cells open,
- 1:19:28Speaker 4: what do they have to yell out to the Philippian jailer?
- 1:19:31Speaker 4: Don't harm yourself. Because if you are guarding a prisoner,
- 1:19:35Speaker 4: and your prisoner gets away, you die. How much more
- 1:19:41Speaker 4: if you're guarding a dead man and his body gets away?
- 1:19:49Speaker 4: If this comes to the governor's ears, we will satisfy
- 1:19:51Speaker 4: him and keep you out of trouble. So they took
- 1:19:54Speaker 4: the money and did as they were directed. And this
- 1:19:57Speaker 4: story has been spread among the Jews to this day.
- 1:20:08Speaker 4: To this day. Either he didn't really die or the
- 1:20:15Speaker 4: body was stolen. But he did die. There's another reason
- 1:20:21Speaker 4: that this is important to John. Because John was very
- 1:20:27Speaker 4: concerned with an early first century heresy called Docetism. These
- 1:20:36Speaker 4: heretics argued that Jesus didn't really die Because Jesus wasn't
- 1:20:43Speaker 4: really man. He didn't really have a body. He was
- 1:20:53Speaker 4: pure spirit. To let you know that John actually dealt
- 1:21:00Speaker 4: with this heresy, he addresses it directly in 1 John. Again,
- 1:21:06Speaker 4: same author. 1 John chapter 4. Beloved, do not believe
- 1:21:12Speaker 4: every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they
- 1:21:15Speaker 4: are from God. For many false prophets have gone out
- 1:21:18Speaker 4: into the world. But by this you know the Spirit
- 1:21:22Speaker 4: of God. Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has
- 1:21:26Speaker 4: come in the flesh is from God. And every spirit
- 1:21:30Speaker 4: that does not confess Jesus is not from God. Every
- 1:21:35Speaker 4: spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ came in the flesh...
- 1:21:40Speaker 4: Because in his day, the docetic heresy was arguing against
- 1:21:47Speaker 4: the reality of the crucifixion and resurrection by arguing that
- 1:21:51Speaker 4: Jesus could not have been crucified because he did not
- 1:21:54Speaker 4: have a real body. No, the death of the Son
- 1:21:59Speaker 4: of Man was confirmed. This is important in John's retelling
- 1:22:04Speaker 4: of the crucifixion. Thirdly, the death of the Son of
- 1:22:08Speaker 4: Man was according to plan. John 19, 28. After this, Jesus,
- 1:22:15Speaker 4: knowing that all was now finished, said, and then there's
- 1:22:19Speaker 4: this parenthetical statement, to fulfill the scripture. He said this
- 1:22:25Speaker 4: to fulfill the scripture. Then in 36 and 37, for
- 1:22:31Speaker 4: these things took place that the scriptures might be fulfilled.
- 1:22:35Speaker 4: Not one of his bones will be broken. And again,
- 1:22:38Speaker 4: another scripture says, they will look on him whom they
- 1:22:42Speaker 4: have loved. pierced john is very clear that jesus is
- 1:22:48Speaker 4: saying and doing these things in order to fulfill the
- 1:22:51Speaker 4: scriptures we looked at this last week but a couple
- 1:22:53Speaker 4: of these things bear mentioning here again psalm 2215 my
- 1:22:58Speaker 4: strength is dried up like pots my tongue sticks to
- 1:23:01Speaker 4: my jaws you lay me in the dust of death
- 1:23:05Speaker 4: this points to the i thirst prophecy psalm 6921 They
- 1:23:10Speaker 4: gave me poison for food, and for my thirst, they
- 1:23:14Speaker 4: gave me sour wine to drink. Numbers 9-12. They shall
- 1:23:22Speaker 4: leave none of it until the morning, nor break any
- 1:23:26Speaker 4: of its bones. This is talking about the Passover, the
- 1:23:29Speaker 4: Passover lamb. You can't leave any of it until the morning.
- 1:23:33Speaker 4: You can't break any of its bones. According to all
- 1:23:36Speaker 4: the statutes for the Passover, they shall keep it. This
- 1:23:39Speaker 4: comes from Exodus 12, 46. It shall be eaten in
- 1:23:44Speaker 4: one house. You shall not take any of its flesh
- 1:23:47Speaker 4: outside the house. You shall not break any of its bones.
- 1:23:55Speaker 4: Christ is the Passover lamb. He did atone for our sins.
- 1:24:03Speaker 4: And all of this happened according to plan. Fourthly, the
- 1:24:11Speaker 4: death of the Son of Man was witnessed by eyewitnesses.
- 1:24:20Speaker 4: Was confirmed by eyewitnesses. Verses 35 to 37. He who
- 1:24:29Speaker 4: saw it has borne witness. It's interesting how John alludes
- 1:24:34Speaker 4: to himself a number of times in his Gospels. Without
- 1:24:39Speaker 4: alluding to himself in the first person. He who saw
- 1:24:43Speaker 4: it has borne witness. His testimony is true. And he
- 1:24:47Speaker 4: knows that he is telling the truth. That you also
- 1:24:51Speaker 4: may believe. For these things took place that the scriptures
- 1:24:55Speaker 4: might be fulfilled. In other words, he's saying, I'm bearing
- 1:25:02Speaker 4: witness as an eyewitness to what happened and to the
- 1:25:07Speaker 4: fact that it happened in fulfillment of the scriptures. Listen
- 1:25:14Speaker 4: to this in 1 John. Again, same author. Listen to
- 1:25:21Speaker 4: how he opens up the epistle of 1 John. That
- 1:25:25Speaker 4: which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which
- 1:25:29Speaker 4: we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked
- 1:25:31Speaker 4: upon and have touched with our hands concerning the word
- 1:25:35Speaker 4: of life. The life was made manifest and we have
- 1:25:37Speaker 4: seen it and we testify to it and proclaim to
- 1:25:40Speaker 4: you the eternal life which was with the Father and
- 1:25:43Speaker 4: was made manifest to us. That which we have seen
- 1:25:46Speaker 4: and have heard, we proclaim to you also, so that
- 1:25:49Speaker 4: you too may have fellowship with us. And indeed, our
- 1:25:52Speaker 4: fellowship is with the Father and with His Son, Jesus Christ.
- 1:25:56Speaker 4: We're writing these things so that our joy may be complete.
- 1:26:04Speaker 4: We saw it. We heard it. touched it. We were there.
- 1:26:15Speaker 4: The death of the Son of Man was witnessed by many.
- 1:26:20Speaker 4: It did not happen in an obscure corner of the world.
- 1:26:29Speaker 4: It happened right there at the crossroads of history. It
- 1:26:35Speaker 4: happened right there in that land bridge that has been
- 1:26:38Speaker 4: fought over throughout the entire history of the globe. Right
- 1:26:45Speaker 4: there in that spot on the globe that is still
- 1:26:48Speaker 4: the most contested spot on the globe in the world
- 1:26:52Speaker 4: today that joins Asia and Africa and Europe. Right there,
- 1:26:57Speaker 4: that small, tiny sliver where a group of people, identifiable
- 1:27:04Speaker 4: from biblical times, still live to this day, surrounded by
- 1:27:09Speaker 4: neighbors on every side who want to drive them into
- 1:27:13Speaker 4: the sea and annihilate them off the face of the earth.
- 1:27:17Speaker 4: Right there is where it happened. Right there. You can
- 1:27:30Speaker 4: go there today See the places today. The fortress of
- 1:27:45Speaker 4: Antonia is right there today. You can walk through it today.
- 1:27:52Speaker 4: Right there on the north side of the old city.
- 1:27:56Speaker 4: You can see it. And there are eyewitnesses who were
- 1:28:02Speaker 4: there who wrote down what they saw one more text
- 1:28:14Speaker 4: go to second Peter second Peter again another eyewitness one
- 1:28:30Speaker 4: of the big three remember Peter James and John that's
- 1:28:34Speaker 4: the inner circle Those are the closest ones. On that
- 1:28:38Speaker 4: night when Jesus is crucified. they are the ones who
- 1:28:42Speaker 4: get the closest view. 2 Peter. Chapter 1. Look at
- 1:28:58Speaker 4: verse 16. For we did not follow cleverly devised myths
- 1:29:09Speaker 4: when we made known to you the power and coming
- 1:29:12Speaker 4: of our Lord Jesus Christ. But we were eyewitnesses of
- 1:29:16Speaker 4: his majesty. For when he received honor and glory from
- 1:29:20Speaker 4: God the Father, and the voice was born to him
- 1:29:23Speaker 4: by the majestic glory, this is my beloved son with
- 1:29:26Speaker 4: whom I am well pleased. We ourselves heard this very
- 1:29:30Speaker 4: voice born from heaven. For we were with him on
- 1:29:34Speaker 4: the holy mountain. And we have the prophetic word more
- 1:29:41Speaker 4: fully confirmed to which you do well to pay attention
- 1:29:46Speaker 4: as to a lamp shining in a dark place until
- 1:29:50Speaker 4: the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.
- 1:29:55Speaker 4: Knowing this, first of all, that no prophecy of scripture
- 1:29:59Speaker 4: came from someone's own interpretation for no prophecy was ever
- 1:30:03Speaker 4: produced by the will of man. but men spoke from
- 1:30:07Speaker 4: God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.
- 1:30:14Speaker 4: That's what we have. That's what we hold to. The
- 1:30:22Speaker 4: Son of Man did indeed die as an atonement for sin.
- 1:30:28Speaker 4: That death was confirmed. That death, according to plan, And
- 1:30:36Speaker 4: that death was witnessed by many. And we have the
- 1:30:40Speaker 4: testimony of those witnesses, including the gospel of John itself.
- 1:30:51Speaker 4: So I ask you this. In light of this, what
- 1:30:57Speaker 4: are you trusting in to atone for your sin? What
- 1:31:04Speaker 4: are you trusting in to make you right with a
- 1:31:09Speaker 4: holy God? What are you trusting in to take care
- 1:31:14Speaker 4: of the sin problem that you absolutely have? You are
- 1:31:18Speaker 4: a sinner. You know you're a sinner. Again, one of
- 1:31:23Speaker 4: the first things you ever learn to say with conviction is,
- 1:31:26Speaker 4: that's not fair. You have a sense of justice. And
- 1:31:30Speaker 4: in your sense of justice, I ask you, Where is
- 1:31:35Speaker 4: the justice for the sin that you commit against a
- 1:31:39Speaker 4: holy God? What will answer for you? And if your
- 1:31:47Speaker 4: answer is anything other than the atoning sacrifice of the
- 1:31:53Speaker 4: Lamb of God, the sinless, spotless Lamb of God Himself,
- 1:32:00Speaker 4: then your answer is woefully insufficient. Insufficient. In the words
- 1:32:07Speaker 4: of the hymn writer, what can wash away my sin?
- 1:32:11Speaker 4: Nothing but the blood of Jesus. What can make me
- 1:32:14Speaker 4: whole again? Nothing but the blood of Jesus. Oh, precious
- 1:32:19Speaker 4: is that flow that makes me white as snow. No
- 1:32:23Speaker 4: other fount I know. Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
- 1:32:31Speaker 4: There is no other answer. There is no other hope.
- 1:32:39Speaker 4: It is Christ and Christ alone. Flee to Him. Trust
- 1:32:46Speaker 4: in Him. And be made whole. Let's pray. Our God
- 1:33:06Speaker 4: and our Father, we thank You and we praise You
- 1:33:08Speaker 4: again for your goodness your kindness the mercy that you
- 1:33:15Speaker 4: have showered upon us through the person and work of
- 1:33:18Speaker 4: the Lord Jesus Christ through his sacrifice and his atoning
- 1:33:23Speaker 4: death on the cross we offer you thanks and praise
- 1:33:34Speaker 4: recognizing the fact that whatever we offer is insufficient and
- 1:33:45Speaker 4: yet you receive it and you accept it because you
- 1:33:54Speaker 4: are good and merciful and kind God and so we
- 1:34:00Speaker 4: offer up to you again our thanks we offer up
- 1:34:04Speaker 4: to you again our praise receive it we ask In
- 1:34:09Speaker 4: Christ's name and for his sake. Amen.
- 1:34:59Speaker 2: We praise God for the preaching of his word. Before
- 1:35:05Speaker 2: we close in a word of prayer, I just want.
- 1:35:09Speaker 1: To ask that we just reflect on the.
- 1:35:17Speaker 2: Sermon that has been shared with us, but also read
- 1:35:21Speaker 2: the benediction, which is from 2 Corinthians, chapter 13 and.
- 1:35:31Speaker 1: Verse 11. Finally, brothers, rejoice.
- 1:35:35Speaker 2: Aim for restoration, comfort one another, agree with one another,
- 1:35:40Speaker 2: live in peace, and the God of love and peace
- 1:35:43Speaker 2: will be with you.
- 1:35:47Speaker 1: Let's pray.
- 1:35:50Speaker 2: Our Father who art in heaven, we thank you for
- 1:35:53Speaker 2: the proclamation of your word this morning. Indeed, we want
- 1:35:58Speaker 2: to thank you, O God, for the power that is
- 1:36:02Speaker 2: in the blood of.
- 1:36:03Speaker 1: Our Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.
- 1:36:06Speaker 2: We thank you, O Lord, for the power of that
- 1:36:10Speaker 2: blood to cleanse us from sin, O God, and to
- 1:36:13Speaker 2: present us spotless, to present us accepted in your most
- 1:36:18Speaker 2: holy presence. Father, we thank you for this, your word,
- 1:36:23Speaker 2: and as we come to the end of our time together,
- 1:36:26Speaker 2: O Lord, We pray that you'll be pleased to dismiss
- 1:36:29Speaker 2: us with the blessings of your peace and grant, dear Lord,
- 1:36:32Speaker 2: that indeed we will know your blessing as we enter
- 1:36:36Speaker 2: into another week. Pray, dear Lord, that you'll be pleased
- 1:36:39Speaker 2: to give us grace to live and work to your
- 1:36:43Speaker 2: praise and glory. For we pray asking these things in
- 1:36:47Speaker 2: Jesus' name.
- 1:36:48Speaker 4: Amen.
- 1:36:51Speaker 1: Before I call some to conclude.
- 1:36:57Speaker 2: With the songs, I would like to find out if
- 1:37:05Speaker 2: we have any people who are visiting us here for
- 1:37:09Speaker 2: the very first time.
- 1:37:11Speaker 1: Anyone who's here at Hillview for the very first time?
- 1:37:17Speaker 5: Okay.
- 1:37:18Speaker 1: I will ask the ushers Please keep your hand raised.
- 1:37:24Speaker 2: There's a brochure and another leaflet inside which will be
- 1:37:30Speaker 2: given to you so that you can fill in your
- 1:37:33Speaker 2: details and we'll be able to.
- 1:37:39Speaker 1: Follow you up later on. So just keep your... Oh,
- 1:37:43Speaker 1: we have one here.
- 1:37:49Speaker 2: And at the same time, maybe let me just take
- 1:37:52Speaker 2: this time as visitors are being given slips to emphasize
- 1:37:57Speaker 2: the fact that the VBS program is on this week,
- 1:38:01Speaker 2: Thursday to Saturday, and also that next week after the
- 1:38:05Speaker 2: morning service, all members are reminded to remain after the
- 1:38:10Speaker 2: morning service to practice. to participate in the nomination of
- 1:38:16Speaker 2: our deacons and thirdly, the fact that the same day,
- 1:38:20Speaker 2: next 16 hours, we'll be going out for outreach in
- 1:38:25Speaker 2: Jack compound. And so, a wedge to our visitors again.
- 1:38:32Speaker 2: So after we sing the closing song. just remain in
- 1:38:38Speaker 2: your seats. Some people come and speak to you where
- 1:38:42Speaker 2: you are just to get to know you a little
- 1:38:43Speaker 2: bit more and also for us to be able to
- 1:38:47Speaker 2: follow you up in the course of the week and
- 1:38:50Speaker 2: for you to be able to appreciate who we.
- 1:38:53Speaker 1: Are as a church.
- 1:38:54Speaker 2: So just to all visitors visiting for the first time,
- 1:38:57Speaker 2: just remain in your seats after everyone has been ushered
- 1:39:01Speaker 2: out by our ushers so that we can get to interact.
- 1:39:07Speaker 2: So I'll call on Sam to conclude the service.
- 1:39:10Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 1:39:22Speaker 3: We have two songs in response to the message. Firstly,
- 1:39:26Speaker 3: I'll ask us to stand as we sing at the
- 1:39:28Speaker 3: cross where I first saw the light. Then as we
- 1:39:30Speaker 3: go out, the ashes lead us out to be singing
- 1:39:33Speaker 3: there is a fountain filled with blood.
- 1:39:35Speaker 6: Shall we just rise to our seats?
- 1:39:54Speaker 8: And did my Savior bleed? And did my sovereign die?
- 1:40:02Speaker 8: Who need Him for that sacred hymn? For such a
- 1:40:10Speaker 8: world as ours? At the cross, at the cross, where
- 1:40:26Speaker 8: I first saw the light, and the blood of my
- 1:40:31Speaker 8: heart poured away. It was there by faith.
- 1:40:38Speaker 10: I received my sight, and now.
- 1:40:43Speaker 5: I am happy all the day.
- 1:40:49Speaker 14: It was impossible that Adam could grow up on the tree.
- 1:41:03Speaker 5: Amazingly.
- 1:41:06Speaker 8: In grace alone And love beyond degree At the cross,
- 1:41:18Speaker 8: at the cross Where I first.
- 1:41:21Speaker 10: Saw the light And the bread of my life Flowed away.
- 1:41:31Speaker 8: It was there by faith.
- 1:41:34Speaker 5: I received my son. And now I am happy all
- 1:41:38Speaker 5: the day.
- 1:41:39Speaker 8: Well, like the sun in darkness I came. and shut
- 1:41:54Speaker 8: His glories in. When cross the mighty make a time
- 1:42:06Speaker 8: for man that.
- 1:42:09Speaker 5: We shall see.
- 1:42:10Speaker 8: At the cross, at the cross, at the cross, Where
- 1:42:17Speaker 8: I first saw the light And the bread of my
- 1:42:23Speaker 8: heart rolled away It was there by faith I received
- 1:42:32Speaker 8: my sight And now I am happy all the day.
- 1:42:41Speaker 5: As my time, my passion is gone.
- 1:42:49Speaker 8: Wow, is it close at.
- 1:42:56Speaker 5: The end.
- 1:42:57Speaker 8: It is all my heart in thankfulness.
- 1:43:04Speaker 12: And help my.
- 1:43:07Speaker 5: Eyes to see.
- 1:43:10Speaker 8: At the cross, at the cross, where I first saw
- 1:43:15Speaker 8: the light. And the pain of my heart rolled away.
- 1:43:23Speaker 8: It was there by faith I received my son. And
- 1:43:31Speaker 8: now I am healthy all the day. But God so
- 1:43:41Speaker 8: free can bear it pain. The gate of love I own.
- 1:43:48Speaker 5: In the Lord I keep myself awake.
- 1:43:50Speaker 8: It is all that I can do. At the cross,
- 1:43:54Speaker 8: at the cross, where I first saw the light.
- 1:44:15Speaker 18: And the burden of.
- 1:44:17Speaker 8: My heart was blown away. It was there by faith
- 1:44:24Speaker 8: I received my sacrifice.
- 1:44:28Speaker 14: And now I am happy.
- 1:44:33Speaker 5: All the day.
- 1:44:34Speaker 6: Let's take our seats. The ushers will now lead us out.
- 1:44:40Speaker 6: As we sing, there is a fountain.
- 1:44:42Speaker 3: As announced, visitors, please remain in your seats as someone
- 1:44:45Speaker 3: will come to interact with you. And we also have
- 1:44:47Speaker 3: an information desk. You will see a couple seated just
- 1:44:51Speaker 3: outside the desk next to our building as we approach
- 1:44:55Speaker 3: the car park.
- 1:45:14Speaker 18: It's a plant that's filled with blood, grown from Emmanuel's name.
- 1:45:28Speaker 18: And sinners plant beneath
- 1:45:32Speaker 11: The plant whose own they're given.
