But we never actually got in the water. Luna: Oh, right! We just stood on the shore. Time to swim? Lucas: Exactly. Today's phrases are all about swimming. Let's start with a simple one: I want to swim. Luna: I want to swim. That's useful. Lucas: In Cantonese: 我想游水. Listen again: 我想游水. Luna: 我想游水. 我想游水. Lucas: Perfect. 我 means 'I', 想 means 'want', 游水 means 'to swim'. So literally 'I want to swim'. Luna: I love that. 我想游水. Let's use it: 我想游水今日. Lucas: Good try, but we usually say 今日我想游水 for 'today I want to swim'. 今日 means 'today'. Luna: Ah, 今日我想游水. Got it. Lucas: Now, imagine you're at the beach and you touch the water. It's very cold. How would you say 'the water is very cold'? Luna: Hmm. 水 is water. 好 is very. 凍 is cold. So 水好凍? Lucas: Almost! But we often say 啲水好凍. 啲 means 'a bit of' or 'the' for plural nouns, like 'the water'. Luna: 啲水好凍. 啲水好凍. The water is very cold. Lucas: Yes. And if it's comfortable, you can say 好舒服. That means 'very comfortable'. Luna: 好舒服. That sounds nice. So after swimming, I can say 好舒服. Lucas: Exactly. And one more phrase: 'Do you know how to swim?' In Cantonese: 你識唔識游水? Luna: Oh, that's a question. 識唔識 means 'know or not know'? Lucas: Right. 識 means 'know how to', and 唔 is 'not'. So 你識唔識游水 literally 'you know not know swim'. Luna: 你識唔識游水? You know how to swim? Lucas: Perfect. Let's practice all four. Repeat after me: 我想游水. Luna: 我想游水. Lucas: 啲水好凍. Luna: 啲水好凍. Lucas: 好舒服. Luna: 好舒服. Lucas: 你識唔識游水? Luna: 你識唔識游水? Lucas: Great! Now let's put them in a little scene. You're at the beach with a friend. Luna: Okay, I'll be me. Friend says: 我想游水. I touch the water: 啲水好凍! Lucas: Friend: 你識唔識游水? You: 我識! But the water is cold, so you say 好舒服 after you go in. Luna: 我識! And then: 好舒服. Nice. Lucas: You've got it. Let's do a quick review. Say 'I want to swim'. Luna: 我想游水. Lucas: The water is very cold. Luna: 啲水好凍. Lucas: Very comfortable. Luna: 好舒服. Lucas: Do you know how to swim? Luna: 你識唔識游水? Lucas: Awesome.
