- 0:14six thirty pm and Melo Rasa Mike Quick calling all
- 0:17the action for preseason game number one here on ninety
- 0:21seven three ESPN, and right now joining us as he
- 0:24does each Thursday, Andrew the checko inside the Birds dot Com.
- 0:29He covers the Eagles all throughout the year, and he
- 0:32is keeping a close eye on the different position groups
- 0:36tonight in preseason game number one.
- 0:39Speaker 2: Andrew, welcome in. How you doing today?
- 0:42Speaker 3: Hey, Josh, I'm doing well. How about yourself?
- 0:44Speaker 1: I'm doing good because we actually have football on the
- 0:47field and it's not just conjecture we've been doing for
- 0:49the last several months.
- 0:50Speaker 2: So for you, Andrew, I know that you know these
- 0:54are the kind.
- 0:54Speaker 1: Of games all the ramp up is for, right, all
- 0:57of the you know, you do all the studying of
- 0:59the draft, you do all the analysis of these guys
- 1:02in training camp, but now we get to see them
- 1:05in action. So let's focus on some of the position
- 1:08groups that we need to keep an eye on tonight.
- 1:11Speaker 2: I wanted to start with a guy that you're very,
- 1:13very familiar with.
- 1:14Speaker 1: For those who've been following you on Inside the Birds
- 1:16dot Com, on the Inside the Birds YouTube, in all
- 1:19the different places you can get Inside the Bird content,
- 1:23A guy that you have gotten to know is Will Shipley.
- 1:26This is going to be a unique opportunity for him
- 1:30to cement himself over the next month between preseason training
- 1:34camp intersquad practices. So for you, what should the audience
- 1:39keep an eye on when Will Shipley is on the
- 1:42field tonight.
- 1:44Speaker 3: Well, Will Shipley adds another dimension to this offense. He
- 1:48has a lot more juice than the other two players
- 1:50in that backfield, and he's really good at catching the football. Now,
- 1:53the question becomes where is he in terms of past
- 1:57protection And that's something that I asked the Eagles offensive
- 1:59course do nator Kevin Patulo about the last time he
- 2:02was available, and that until you see it in a game,
- 2:06it's really difficult to make that assessment. So I'll be
- 2:09keeping an eye on that because for Will to be
- 2:11the number two running back obviously and see a more
- 2:13meaningful role, obviously, you need to be able to acquit
- 2:16yourself well in pass protection and earn the confidence of
- 2:20the coaches. So that's what I'll be keeping an eye on.
- 2:22And I think he's going to see a lot of
- 2:23run tonight.
- 2:25Speaker 2: You mentioned what the pass protection.
- 2:27Speaker 1: Obviously that was something that Kenny Gainwell was somebody that
- 2:30was used a lot in that capacity.
- 2:34Speaker 2: Do you believe they're looking at Shipley.
- 2:36Speaker 1: Just as a guy that is going to be the
- 2:39new Kenny Gainwell or do you think he could have
- 2:42a maybe a different type of role behind Saquon Barkley.
- 2:48Speaker 3: Well, Kenny Gainwell there was unique in the sense that
- 2:51the Eagles trusted him and he was there too and
- 2:53four minutes back, and he was able to do a
- 2:58lot of things in terms of short yardage despite not
- 3:00having the biggest frame for the position. But Will Shipley
- 3:04is a player who offers a lot more explosiveness and
- 3:09he's an even better receiver, and you can move him
- 3:11around formations. I think he can get a little bit
- 3:13more creative and how he deploy will because of his
- 3:17unique skill set. But so I think you might see,
- 3:21let me use a little bit differently. But again, what
- 3:24Kenny Gagwell was able to do very well in terms
- 3:26of In addition to being the two and four minute
- 3:29running back and catching the ball reliably and sure he
- 3:32orders was he was pretty solid in pass protection. So
- 3:37a lot of this is tied to Will's ability to
- 3:40take that next step forward in his progression and showcase
- 3:44some improvements in pass protection before we are able to
- 3:48determine what role he may take on this year.
- 3:51Speaker 1: So with Andrew di Checko at Andrew di Checko on
- 3:54the Twitter next platform of course inside the burs dot
- 3:56com for all of his Eagles coverage, the next position
- 4:00we keep a eye on tonight, Andrew, And I'm not
- 4:02sure why more people haven't talked about this, honestly, but
- 4:05I'm curious about tight end because every single year Dallas
- 4:09Godder missed time. Nothing against him, but he has not
- 4:12been the He has not been the example of great
- 4:15health at times. Right, He's been banged up every single
- 4:18year this offseason. You sign Kylin Granson, you broad in
- 4:24Harrison Bryant, you already have Grant Calcatara. I know EJ.
- 4:28Jenkins is down there in camp. So for you, what
- 4:33are you looking at from the tight ends tonight?
- 4:37Speaker 3: You know, I'm looking to see somebody really step up
- 4:40and make some noise here because in training camp it's
- 4:43been a mixed bag. Harrison Bryant hasn't really flashed like
- 4:47we were expecting to see because he had in the past.
- 4:51Kylon Grantson, I think of that group has has made
- 4:54the most impression, the most impressions throughout camp, and he
- 4:58does have a wide range skill set where he can
- 5:01be an h back. You can line him up in
- 5:02the backfield, you can line him up out wide. He's
- 5:04also a really good special teams player. But and then
- 5:09aj Jenkins says he missed a couple of days with
- 5:11a hamstring and then he caught a couple passes in
- 5:14team drill, So no one's really emerged from the pack there.
- 5:18That's where the games are going to be the ultimate
- 5:20separator in my opinion. But I've always been at the
- 5:23belief that they could be vuying for a position that
- 5:26may or may not even exist. I'm also sure the
- 5:29Eagles would even carry that many tight ends on the
- 5:32roster because they had a lot of success last year
- 5:35carrying two and then elevating one from the practice squad.
- 5:38But of that group, I think Kylon Grantson's kind of interesting.
- 5:41Speaker 1: So let's say, for example, I'm just putting out a
- 5:45scenario and I think that's what's going to happen.
- 5:46Speaker 2: But you mentioned with the practice squad.
- 5:48Speaker 1: Is there a scenario where maybe the opening day tight end, right,
- 5:53you know for Thursdayday when the Eagles play the Cowboys
- 5:56that you talk about, Goddard, cal Katara and then Ranson
- 6:00might be the three tight ends and then maybe a
- 6:03fourth guy would go to practice squad.
- 6:04Speaker 2: Is that what you're thinking.
- 6:06Speaker 3: No, I mean, I'm even thinking that they might carry two, oh, okay,
- 6:09fifty three and then maybe one or two on the
- 6:11practice squad and then elevate depending on the matchup.
- 6:15Speaker 2: Gotcha.
- 6:16Speaker 3: You can get a guy like an EJ. Jenkins, who's
- 6:18a good blocking tight end at six with six two
- 6:20hundred and sixty pounds. Granson is a movable piece that
- 6:23I think could really fit in and give Kevin Petullo
- 6:27some optionality. So it all depends. I think it'll be
- 6:29matchup dependent.
- 6:31Speaker 1: Andrews look it over to the defense because with the
- 6:33trading of Thomas Booker this week, we all have all
- 6:37talked about, well, what does Bennett mean to the cornerback position? Well,
- 6:40what about what it means for defensive tackle. And I
- 6:43know a guy that someone like you is going to
- 6:45keep a very close eye on, is Gabe Hall. Tell
- 6:49the audience about who Gabe Hall is and why he
- 6:52is a guy people need to keep an eye on tonight.
- 6:55Speaker 3: Yeah, and I've said this a few times since the
- 6:58trade happened, But if you're the Eagle, if you don't
- 7:00move off of someone like Thomas Booker, the fourth a
- 7:02player who likely would have made the team and been
- 7:04the fifth defensive tackle, maybe even been the fourth to
- 7:08start while ty Robinson continues to grow, unless you're confident
- 7:13in the development of ty Robinson or Gave Hall. Because
- 7:16Byron Young's another young defensive tackle, but he's working through
- 7:19a groin injury and he was when the trade was made.
- 7:22So that to me suggests that the Eagles are seeing
- 7:25what I've been seeing through the ten practices, and that
- 7:28Gave Hall has flashed. He's been in the backfield a
- 7:30couple of different times. He's six foot six, two hundred
- 7:33and ninety five pounds, He's a rangy guy, athletic, and
- 7:37I think that he's made a noticeable difference in year two.
- 7:41He didn't really flash a ton last preseason, but I
- 7:44think that he gives the Eagles some optionality there. He
- 7:47can play any position on the defensive line, and he's
- 7:50had a good camp, and he's a cost effective He
- 7:52has a cost effective contract with it, which also helps
- 7:55as well being a second year.
- 7:57Speaker 1: Player aside from the Hall obviously, I know Moro Jomo's
- 8:02got in a lot of hype, but what about Ty Robinson?
- 8:05Talk to us about what you want to see from
- 8:08Ty Robinson. He's a guy that a lot of people
- 8:11loved when the Eagles drafted him.
- 8:15Speaker 3: Yeah, I've gotten so many questions recently about ty Robinson
- 8:18because I understandably a lot of folks are curious about him.
- 8:21And my answer is always, you know, in the beginning
- 8:25of camp, he didn't really stand out in any way
- 8:27go to or bad. But the more reps that he's received,
- 8:30the more confidence he seems to be playing with. He's
- 8:34picking up on the techniques that are being taught by
- 8:36defensive line coach Clint Hurt, and I do think he's
- 8:39gonna play a ton in the preseason, which should go
- 8:41a long way and better assessing where he is at
- 8:44this stage. And again, you don't trade someone like Thomas Booker,
- 8:48who is already ready to step in there and play,
- 8:51and he was having a good camp. If Robinson's development
- 8:54isn't on schedule, or gave Hall for that matter as well.
- 8:58So he's coming along nicely and it's been a little
- 9:01bit more gradual. He hasn't had the flashy plays, but
- 9:05you can definitely see the noticeable growth. Practice to practice.
- 9:09Speaker 1: The file position with Hill for football at for four
- 9:12positions to watch for tonight when the Eagles take on
- 9:15the Bengals. You can hear the game right here on
- 9:17ninety seven three es being Andrew Checko from Inside the
- 9:20Birds dot Com and the Inside the Birds podcast on
- 9:23the line with us Andrew.
- 9:25Speaker 2: Let's get to the safety position no more. CJ. Garner Johnson.
- 9:30Speaker 1: You have to find somebody else to play next to
- 9:32Reblankenship again for a third straight year. There's a lot
- 9:37of interesting candidates. You drafted Drew mccouba, You already have
- 9:41Sidney Brown in the building. Andre Sam is a guy
- 9:44who knows the Fangio system, and then you have Lewis Scenes.
- 9:47So who are the guys you actually expect to see
- 9:50on the field and what are you looking.
- 9:51Speaker 2: For from them?
- 9:52Speaker 3: Andre Sam second year player who was undrafted last year.
- 9:56He knows the system from being on the Eagles practice
- 9:58squad last year. He's had a nice camp and I
- 10:01think that he's actually a player that everybody should be highlighting,
- 10:04because I mean being in the meeting rooms with safeties Coacht,
- 10:08Joe Casper, CJ. Gardner Johnson was pretty much a big
- 10:12brother to him. They trained together the offseason leading up
- 10:16to the twenty twenty four season, and so presumably he
- 10:20has a better perspective on what to expect here in
- 10:23year two, and he's playing a lot faster, with more confidence.
- 10:27He's carrying himself better. And Tristan McCullum is another player
- 10:31that Vic Fangio mentioned for being another name in that
- 10:35safety competition. Now it really is going to be a
- 10:38two person battle between Sidney Brown and Drew mccooba. But
- 10:43Sidney Brown's had kind of a quiet camp, hasn't done
- 10:45anything good or bad. I think that he's playing a
- 10:48lot more restrained, which is what you want to see.
- 10:50And I'll be keeping an eye on seeing how much
- 10:52more poised he is, I guess, back there and playing
- 10:55within the confines of that defense. And also I'm not
- 10:59sure if we'll see Drew mccooplin in Game one because
- 11:02he's still working his way back from the shoulder, but
- 11:04he's making encouraging signs in that return. But that's a
- 11:07player that I fully expect to start. And then the
- 11:12reserve positions being between Andre Sam and Tristan McCollum, which
- 11:15is which are two guys that everybody really should be
- 11:18keeping an eye on in this game because they both
- 11:20had some bright moments in training camp.
- 11:22Speaker 1: D Also, Tristan McCollum was a guy that Fangio had
- 11:24mentioned in previous press conferences as a guy to look
- 11:27at as part of that safety group. He was a
- 11:30guy who came into games last year for the safety position.
- 11:34So in your mind, is McCollum maybe like a dark
- 11:38horse to be a guy that maybe slides in there
- 11:42because of his experience last year, not.
- 11:46Speaker 3: As a starter, but as somebody who I think could
- 11:49really be a depth piece here, and he is really
- 11:52good on special teams. I feel like a lot of
- 11:54folks have sort of written off Tristan McCollum, or they
- 11:57maybe have a perception because of the lasting memory of him,
- 12:02you know, trailing on that touchdown the Super Bowl. But
- 12:06he can absolutely play and I've seen and I've talked
- 12:10to Tristan many times over the past couple of years,
- 12:13gotten to know him. Smart player, really takes to the position,
- 12:17takes to the coaching, and hones in on the fine
- 12:20details of that position. And he's a player that Vick
- 12:23Vangio trust because he is assignment sound. Maybe doesn't make
- 12:27the flashy or explosive plays that someone like a Sydney
- 12:30Brown or Drew mccoobla can make, but there's something to
- 12:33be said for a player who is fundamentally sound and
- 12:36you know where he's going to be, and he knows
- 12:38where he needs to be on a given play. So
- 12:41I would just say I would just caution folks who
- 12:43want to write him off because he's a player that
- 12:45the Eagles like.
