Latest / Xenomania / Is Evil Dead Rise REALLY an Evil Dead Movie? - Xenomania 82
Transcript
- 0:00Jon: This week on Xenomania, when an earthquake opens a path into
- 0:05a bank vault, a teen discovers a creepy book and a series of records.
- 0:10Of course, he has to play them, even in a blackout and against his sister's wishes.
- 0:17With no Ash Williams to save them, what he unleashes will destroy his family and
- 0:22neighbors before the night is through.
- 0:25We certainly know not to read from an evil book, right, guys?
- 0:31Right?
- 0:34In addition, we play a round of Slash or Stash that has to be
- 0:37completely safe for my co-hosts.
- 0:41This is Evil Dead Rise.
- 0:44This is Xenomania
- 1:02Ryan: in the middle of the night, a nice boom stick
- 1:05Kearns: I bet you do, buddy.
- 1:07Do, do you just say, "Come get some?"
- 1:09Ryan: Groovy, baby.
- 1:12Kearns: Shop smart, shop S Mart.
- 1:17Jon: Do you like, to wake up with a boom stick?
- 1:20A boom stick nestled between, your, pillows
- 1:25Kearns: Your Necronomicons?
- 1:26Ryan: The Neca Comic Cons?
- 1:27Yeah.
- 1:28Ah.
- 1:29Kearns: There you
- 1:29Jon: Oh God, we're gonna hear that so many times tonight.
- 1:34Ryan: Yes,
- 1:34Jon: Necro
- 1:35Kearns: we
- 1:36Ryan: Yes, you
- 1:36Jon: Comic-Con
- 1:37Ryan: talking about The Evil Dead, but we're talking about The Evil
- 1:41Dead Rise, the recent sequel in The Evil Dead franchise as we're
- 1:46talking about it today, July 10th.
- 1:48Evil Dead burn was released, and from my understanding, to mixed reviews.
- 1:54Mixed to positive reviews, I should say
- 1:56Jon: That's what I've seen.
- 1:57I'm not… Like, it seems like this is… I don't know a lot about the director.
- 2:02I did watch his previous movie this afternoon, Infested, which is a
- 2:08French spider takeover kind of movie.
- 2:12it's all right.
- 2:14It seems like it's a big step to hand The Evil Dead to him, but, you know, maybe
- 2:21Kearns: Yeah.
- 2:22Jon: Maybe
- 2:23Kearns: Rotten Tomatoes right now, 72%.
- 2:25IMDb 6.9 out of 10, Metacritic 58%.
- 2:29So it's,
- 2:31Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 2:31Kearns: not struggling, but it's definitely getting its, it's
- 2:34definitely getting criticized
- 2:36Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 2:36Ryan: taken with a new director, right?
- 2:38still on the same story focus.
- 2:40I feel like as we'll get into it with Rise, it's like a requel.
- 2:44Like, it's remembering the past films.
- 2:47There's, homages to it.
- 2:49But, also in this film, it kinda takes its own creative, direction.
- 2:53And I know I messed up on homage.
- 2:55There we go,
- 2:56Jon: No, you got it.
- 2:57You got it.
- 2:57I w- I was… That, that, that was a prideful smile.
- 3:04Ryan: Oh, okay.
- 3:05I was worried.
- 3:06Um, but
- 3:07Kearns: didn't see us not in approval?
- 3:09Ryan: no, I, I, I looked away 'cause I was like, "Oh man, did I mess up?"
- 3:12And I just kept going with it, just like John Belushi in Animal House.
- 3:15But, you know, it's like taking that chance and as, um, again, we're gonna
- 3:21discuss, like, w- the question is to kinda give a theme is, is this
- 3:27even an Evil Dead movie, right?
- 3:31And that's something to ponder while… We'll answer our version
- 3:34of it later, but that's something to ponder for the whole podcast
- 3:38Kearns: criticize something real quick.
- 3:40Jon: Okay, let's get d-
- 3:41Kearns: quick.
- 3:41In every
- 3:42Jon: well
- 3:42Kearns: Dead movie, there's the inciting event, right?
- 3:45Ryan: Yes.
- 3:46Kearns: The inciting event is the finding of the damn book.
- 3:48What's the book called again, Ryan?
- 3:50Ryan: The Necrokamika
- 3:52Kearns: The Necronomicon.
- 3:54So in this movie, was the finding of the Necronomicon up to par?
- 4:01Ryan: Yes, 50/50.
- 4:04I feel like you're first introduced to it in The Evil Dead, uh, the
- 4:09original one, you got the atmosphere, the creepiness, the lone cabin.
- 4:13no lights, no electricity.
- 4:15You feel the airiness.
- 4:17You know,
- 4:17Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 4:18Ryan: something bad in the cellar.
- 4:20this one, you go into this vault, like bank 'cause the
- 4:24building's built on top of a bank.
- 4:26Uh, Danny… Is it Danny?
- 4:28Jon: Danny, yeah.
- 4:29Kearns: who finds it, yeah
- 4:30Ryan: Danny?
- 4:30Jon: The, the sort of non-age specific male character who looks
- 4:37like he's 12 but he can drive.
- 4:41He looks 12, but he drives.
- 4:43he's sort of like 18 to 20 in a Justin Bieber 18 to 20 kind of way,
- 4:49where he could be a lot younger
- 4:52Ryan: I was, I kept thinking of
- 4:54Kearns: tell the difference between him and Miley Cyrus at that point.
- 4:57Jon: Yeah.
- 4:58Kearns: That kind of Bieber?
- 4:59Yeah Makes sense.
- 5:01So they find it in the bank vault after an earthquake in this
- 5:04Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 5:06Mm-hmm.
- 5:06And Danny
- 5:07Ryan: like it, it,
- 5:09Jon: It works.
- 5:10I mean,
- 5:10Ryan: vibes
- 5:11Jon: it does, and it gives you, like, sort of a sense that this was, isn't, uh,
- 5:17something you should mess around with.
- 5:18That it's, you know, locked in a vault in a bank that was obviously
- 5:23abandoned and then built on top of.
- 5:26You know, whoever put it in that vault didn't want it to come out
- 5:33Ryan: Is that based on all the hanging crosses and the big crucifix on
- 5:38Jon: Yeah, I mean, I mean, yeah, they, there's a lot of hints in there that
- 5:42you probably shouldn't take these things
- 5:45Kearns: Yeah, I
- 5:45Jon: definitely… No.
- 5:47Kearns: throw that out there.
- 5:49Jon: Yes, we would've.
- 5:50Kearns: No shot.
- 5:51Jon: At, at, at whatever random, whatever random, whatever random
- 5:57pre-teen to teen age that Danny is, you 100% would've taken that stuff too.
- 6:03You would've been like, "This is, this stuff is cool. I'm taking it."
- 6:06Kearns: I
- 6:08was thinking
- 6:09Jon: We,
- 6:09Kearns: me, not then me.
- 6:11Yeah
- 6:11Jon: no, because current you, current you, current me, we understand
- 6:17the danger in taking that book
- 6:21Ryan: I'd still take it
- 6:23Kearns: Right.
- 6:24Ryan: Why not?
- 6:25What's the worst that's gonna ha- okay,
- 6:27Kearns: Did you not watch
- 6:27Jon: what d- yeah, what's the worst that's gonna happen?
- 6:30Ryan: savvy
- 6:32Jon: I don't know.
- 6:33Your body's gonna contort in weird ways.
- 6:35You're gonna vomit a lot.
- 6:38You're gonna try to off your family.
- 6:41You're gonna… Yeah, yeah, you're gonna, you're gonna change a bit
- 6:45Ryan: just the de- that's the demons.
- 6:48That's the demons talking
- 6:49Kearns: gonna be possessed and a passenger while all that's occurring your body.
- 6:54Ryan: know,
- 6:55Kearns: worse.
- 6:56Ryan: I'd be fine with, I'd be fine with that because you know what?
- 6:59I'll be… You know what bothered me a little bit is I like the new design
- 7:03of the book with the teeth, I miss the old design with the face on it.
- 7:07It kinda threw me off,
- 7:10Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 7:13Mm-hmm.
- 7:15Kearns: covers.
- 7:16Ryan: but
- 7:16Kearns: Well, there
- 7:17Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 7:17Kearns: different… Uh, didn't, in Ash Vs Evil Dead, didn't they distinguish
- 7:20that there are different Necronomicons?
- 7:23Ryan: I've only made it up to season two
- 7:27Kearns: Maybe.
- 7:27Ryan: That's, that's why…
- 7:28Kearns: so,
- 7:29Jon: I've seen the whole near
- 7:30Ryan: maybe they mentioned-- It was so long ago.
- 7:33Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 7:33Ryan: that?
- 7:35Jon: I don't, I, I don't remember for sure.
- 7:38I wa- I watched Ash vs Evil Dead was probably the last show I
- 7:43watched, like, live as it aired
- 7:47Ryan: Rightfully so.
- 7:49Jon: And not streaming, I would just, yeah.
- 7:53But I don't, I mean, it was long enough ago that I would have to… That would
- 7:58really be making it up if I guessed
- 8:02It might
- 8:03Kearns: are.
- 8:03There are three distinct volumes.
- 8:05It's canonically established that there are three distinct volumes.
- 8:09Ryan: Hmm.
- 8:09So
- 8:09Kearns: was the one in the Evil Dead trilogy, the original.
- 8:12Volume two is in the 2013 one, and volume three is in Evil Dead Rise
- 8:16Ryan: I wonder if they're gonna show each book in, in the upcoming sequels.
- 8:20Like Byrne will have a different book, and then Wrath will have a different book
- 8:24Kearns: pull
- 8:25Jon: Maybe.
- 8:25Kearns: for the, for the pod.
- 8:28Ryan: Just thinking
- 8:29Kearns: That'd be
- 8:30Jon: Maybe that,
- 8:31Kearns: Um,
- 8:31Jon: that'd be a good idea.
- 8:34Kearns: Let's see if they run with it.
- 8:36Jon: Mm-hmm
- 8:36Kearns: they run with it.
- 8:37I know that this movie is filled with Easter eggs.
- 8:39Before we start touching on those, uh, or the ones at least that
- 8:43I noticed, how about the cast?
- 8:45Did you guys…
- 8:45Like, we talked about Danny already, the ambiguously aged
- 8:48child, man child, boy, teenager.
- 8:52Um, how about the rest?
- 8:53An Evil Dead movie with kids has a different vibe to it
- 8:57Jon: It does.
- 8:57It does, it very much does.
- 9:00I liked the kids though.
- 9:02Like, I liked, you know, they didn't just cookie cut some personalities.
- 9:07You know, they gave whatever age Danny is sort of his own personality
- 9:12with a, you know, his DJ kinda thing.
- 9:14And you know, and Bridget is the eco-sensitive middle child, you know.
- 9:24But Cassie to me is the best of the three
- 9:28Kearns: I see the little one.
- 9:29Jon: Yeah, the little one is awesome, walking around with Staffanie.
- 9:33I mean, Staffanie's the funniest part of this whole thing.
- 9:36She, you know, like, if you haven't seen it, Staffanie is a wooden staff with a
- 9:42doll's head on top, and it's designed to ward away evil in Cassie's world
- 9:49Kearns: In Cassie's little hopeful world
- 9:52Ryan: And
- 9:52Jon: works at one point
- 9:55Ryan: yeah, it does
- 9:55Kearns: does.
- 9:56Kinda does.
- 9:57Well, see, the thing about this movie is what cuts right through it is that
- 10:01the person possessed at the apartment portion of it is their mother,
- 10:05Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 10:08Mm-hmm.
- 10:12Kearns: and
- 10:13Jon: Yeah, she's
- 10:14Ryan: Alyssa Sutherland
- 10:16Jon: Yeah, she's really, really good in that.
- 10:19Kearns: Hmm.
- 10:20Jon: menacing and, you know, like just, but also, you know, the
- 10:25way they used her ability to just sort of float back into being mom
- 10:31Kearns: Yeah
- 10:32Jon: and…
- 10:34Ryan: It's
- 10:34Jon: It's very, very, yeah, unnerving's a very good word for it
- 10:38Ryan: It's just like 'cause
- 10:39Kearns: the first movie I'd seen in a long time that I found actually, like,
- 10:44Ryan: Yeah.
- 10:45Like bring her back
- 10:47Kearns: watching this.
- 10:47Now, Bring It Back was a bad movie
- 10:49Ryan: So did you feel the glass scene in s- in this was on
- 10:53the level of Bring Her Back?
- 10:55Kearns: No.
- 10:55Bring
- 10:56Ryan: I thought,
- 10:56Kearns: different
- 10:57Ryan: thought, I thought that gla-
- 10:58Kearns: was hard though
- 10:59Ryan: that glass scene was rough.
- 11:01Jon: Yeah.
- 11:02Kearns: But it
- 11:02Jon: Yeah
- 11:03Kearns: chewing on a butcher knife.
- 11:05Jon: I mean, it's not far off.
- 11:10Yeah, yeah.
- 11:11I mean,
- 11:11Ryan: the glass
- 11:13Jon: for, if, again, if you, if,
- 11:15Kearns: ante in this
- 11:16Jon: if you haven't watched it, you should probably pause now and watch it.
- 11:20But, um, after Bridget gets possessed, she eats a glass
- 11:26Kearns: Yeah, it's tough
- 11:28Ryan: But it's all based on the demons that are in the book, which I like.
- 11:32Like Ellie is based on what I'm just gonna call the Red Queen demon
- 11:37'cause of her red hair and all that.
- 11:39She looks like an ambiguous, like the leader of the whole group, while Bridget
- 11:44becomes, uh, I don't know how to put it.
- 11:47Like she's got… It's on the tip of my tongue.
- 11:50Like it's the demon with the maggots inside, and it's like eating, it's eating
- 11:54her from inside, so she, that's why she eats the glass to kill what's inside her.
- 11:58I for- There's a term for that.
- 12:02It's from an X-Files episode too, so that's why I'm like
- 12:05Jon: And, eh, we'll, we'll call her Maga Tina
- 12:08Kearns: I, I
- 12:08Ryan: That's what I'm saying.
- 12:10Kearns: I do enjoy
- 12:11Ryan: and cheese
- 12:12Kearns: Yeah, that works.
- 12:14I do enjoy demonology and stuff, but they s- the specifics you're getting to
- 12:19Ryan: It's in,
- 12:20Kearns: a
- 12:20Ryan: Constantine too.
- 12:21It's
- 12:21Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 12:22Ryan: issue of Hellblazer.
- 12:23It's like the bugs eat you within and kinda like your soul.
- 12:27But when the, the demon terms, it's an ongoing thing, so that's why
- 12:32it keeps eating people, and glass, and anything to what's inside it
- 12:37Kearns: The what's inside of it is what's getting me, 'cause the gluttony
- 12:40Ryan: Oh, on a-unalive.
- 12:41I'm sorry.
- 12:42Unalive
- 12:42Kearns: No,
- 12:42Ryan: instead.
- 12:43Kearns: k- the unalive and what's inside thing is what's throwing me off, 'cause
- 12:46the gluttony thing is a big… Like, you can find a few of them that are like that,
- 12:50Ryan: Yes
- 12:51Kearns: but,
- 12:51Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 12:52Kearns: Belphegor-esque and stuff.
- 12:53But you can't-- I can't think of anything but like when you're
- 12:56consciously trying to off it from within, that's why you're eating things.
- 13:00don't know
- 13:01Ryan: I feel like it's a lower, a lower term demon, if that makes sense.
- 13:06But
- 13:06Kearns: bem.
- 13:07É que, né
- 13:07Ryan: by the time we get to the third act and we get to the, the
- 13:10big mama jamba, that's pretty cool.
- 13:16I don't
- 13:16Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 13:20Ryan: Yeah, the big mama jamba
- 13:22Jon: Yeah, I… The, the full, the full on body horror one
- 13:25Kearns: Yeah.
- 13:27The, what do we call it?
- 13:28The amalgamation of all the bodies
- 13:30Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 13:31Mm-hmm.
- 13:33Ryan: There we go.
- 13:34Jon: The what?
- 13:36Kearns: What was that?
- 13:36Ryan: The amygdala
- 13:38Kearns: Uh, yeah, the, uh, the Amygdala?
- 13:41Ryan: I went with a
- 13:41Jon: Amydala?
- 13:42Ryan: Yes, the Batman villain, yes.
- 13:45that direction.
- 13:46Kearns: part of
- 13:46Jon: No
- 13:47Ryan: The Abadullah, the what… I'm trying to remember the, the
- 13:50Kearns: the Amygdalas
- 13:51Ryan: Amagdala, but yeah
- 13:53Kearns: Th- that's a cool little lore, too.
- 13:55In Bloodborne, you had to s- get a certain amount of insight before you
- 13:58could see the Amygdalas that were
- 14:00Ryan: Yes
- 14:01Kearns: you throughout the whole game.
- 14:02Awesome.
- 14:03Awesome job.
- 14:04Back to Evil Dead.
- 14:05Jon: Yes
- 14:07Kearns: we're getting through this movie, and we're watching it, and
- 14:10we're constantly judging it because it's got Evil Dead in its name, right?
- 14:14Does it stack up at all with the first three?
- 14:17We're not even gonna talk about 2013 right now
- 14:19Jon: No, we're gonna, we're gonna skip that.
- 14:23I think my, I think I put my opinions on 2013 out there pretty strongly
- 14:30Ryan: You know, seeing it in theaters with the high hopes, it'd be great.
- 14:34And then, yeah.
- 14:36Kearns: in theaters?
- 14:37Ryan: Oh, no, not Rise, 2013
- 14:39Jon: Rise in theaters.
- 14:40Ryan: wish I did.
- 14:41Kearns: were not going to talk about
- 14:42Ryan: Well, that's when he, he… I
- 14:43Kearns: continue
- 14:44Ryan: th- it was,
- 14:45Kearns: of
- 14:45Ryan: I thought he was talking about 2013 real quick.
- 14:47That's why I was like, "I
- 14:48Jon: No, no
- 14:49Ryan: You didn't like it?
- 14:50I,
- 14:50Kearns: he,
- 14:50Ryan: I,
- 14:51Kearns: just letting us know that he didn't like it
- 14:53Ryan: I
- 14:55Jon: Not even a little.
- 14:56Kearns: how does it
- 14:57Jon: Not even a little
- 14:58Kearns: trilogy, Ryan?
- 14:59For
- 15:00Ryan: In my opinion, I think it
- 15:01Kearns: droning on about the bad
- 15:03Ryan: It does, it does a good job, I feel.
- 15:05It, it's going more to the first one, where the first one's really direct
- 15:10horror, but it has little instances of the second and third one with
- 15:14the Deadites' face and how they act.
- 15:17But it goes more horror aspect.
- 15:19While with, like, Two and Army of Darkness, even with Ash versus
- 15:22Evil Dead, if we're gonna talk about that 'cause that is canon,
- 15:26it is horror, a little more comedy.
- 15:30It has a little more of a comedy edge.
- 15:31While Evil Dead Rise it- this is, like… No, like, I had to
- 15:37watch Spinal Tap after this film.
- 15:40Like,
- 15:40Kearns: Wow
- 15:42Ryan: was like, "This is the second time I've watched this film, and
- 15:44I still get unnerved." And I knew certain things were coming, and I
- 15:49Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 15:49Ryan: like, "No, I gotta watch a comedy or something
- 15:53Yeah
- 15:53Kearns: a hard time gotten it through movies like this these days.
- 15:56This kind of horror, and I appreciate it too.
- 15:59It's not like I don't like it.
- 16:00I do like it.
- 16:01It's just harder for me to watch Isn't that weird?
- 16:05Ryan: The gore?
- 16:06Kearns: a giant wuss.
- 16:07It's, maybe it's the gor- but the body horror definitely adds a lot to it.
- 16:12Ryan: Are you
- 16:12Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 16:12Ryan: about
- 16:14Kearns: movie that makes it so, like, you wanna turn on the hall
- 16:17light before heading to the bathroom
- 16:19Ryan: Yeah.
- 16:20Kearns: that.
- 16:20Yeah.
- 16:22Ryan: don't
- 16:22Kearns: why we do this, you know?
- 16:23We like scary movies, but this one, this
- 16:25Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 16:25Kearns: type of, this style, I should say, has been getting tricky for me
- 16:29Ryan: You don't know she's at the end of the hall.
- 16:32Like, it, it
- 16:34Kearns: You hear her skittering around on the ceiling.
- 16:36Ryan: Mother,
- 16:37Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 16:39In the air ducts.
- 16:40I bet
- 16:41Kearns: my mom down the stairs
- 16:45Ma, you're, Ma, are you watching?
- 16:47You're getting it bad.
- 16:49If you get possessed and come after me, you're gonna fly
- 16:52Jon: I mean, that's fair.
- 16:53That's
- 16:54Kearns: out there
- 16:54Jon: reas- that's reasonable
- 16:57Ryan: That's fair.
- 16:59Jon: I mean, it's reasonable.
- 17:00She's possessed.
- 17:01Uh, yeah.
- 17:03She would want you, she would want you to do that.
- 17:06Kearns: is Sparta
- 17:07Jon: She would want you to do that
- 17:09Kearns: Yeah.
- 17:10Let's hope 'cause it, it's
- 17:12Ryan: Oh, yeah.
- 17:12'Cause like you can… And I like that is they continue that from at
- 17:16least, wanna say from the first one, but at least the second and third one
- 17:20where, and Ash vs Evil Dead, where when the person's possessed, you
- 17:24see a little bit of them come out.
- 17:27Again, it's really not seen in the first one.
- 17:28I feel like in the first one it's more of an illusion, where it's luring the
- 17:32characters down into the basement.
- 17:34But the second and third one in the series, you do see those characters
- 17:38come out from the possession showing the pain and what they're going through.
- 17:42And it, I feel, shows in Evil Dead Rise through little hints.
- 17:46that demon does have a big hold on her
- 17:50Kearns: Yeah,
- 17:51Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 17:55Ryan: scene, I thought, like, remembering when I first saw it, I thought we were
- 17:59Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 18:00Ryan: tree scene.
- 18:00I'm like, "Thank God."
- 18:02Kearns: The Gables?
- 18:03Ryan: Yeah.
- 18:04Kearns: Oh, that was definitely an Easter egg as well, though.
- 18:08firmly
- 18:08Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 18:09Mm-hmm.
- 18:10Oh, absolutely.
- 18:11There, there are a bunch of them, yeah
- 18:13Kearns: the Bridget Fonda
- 18:16There's a Bridget Fonda allusion with the billboard
- 18:19Ryan: Yep.
- 18:19Kearns: where it says Fonda on the billboard, and for some reason it
- 18:23Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 18:25Mm-hmm.
- 18:26Kearns: going on there?" And it's because Bridget Fonda was in the, in the Army
- 18:30of Darkness or is she in the second one?
- 18:33She's in the S- she's an S-Mart clerk
- 18:35Jon: Oh, so yeah, probably Aria of Darkness, yeah
- 18:39Ryan: of Darkness.
- 18:39Kearns: She
- 18:40Ryan: Yeah
- 18:40Kearns: be in the franchise, but she couldn't 'cause she was in another movie.
- 18:43That's what I dug up on it.
- 18:45Jon: If it was Army of Darkness, it might have,
- 18:47Kearns: in this."
- 18:47Jon: she might have been in Single White Female at the time
- 18:51Kearns: It could have been.
- 18:52That, I
- 18:52Ryan: Oh, okay
- 18:53Kearns: breakout movie for her.
- 18:54Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 18:55Kearns: and the one where she's a hit woman.
- 18:57Jon: Yeah
- 18:58Kearns: I forgot the name of it.
- 18:59That's another
- 19:00Ryan: Imag- imagine if she was the lead actress in Army of Darkness.
- 19:03That would've
- 19:04Jon: Was that, was that Le, was that La Femme Nikita?
- 19:08Kearns: No, La Femme
- 19:09Ryan: No.
- 19:09Kearns: was a different one.
- 19:11Ryan: Besson.
- 19:11Kearns: a
- 19:11Jon: I, yeah, I can see the cover.
- 19:15Kearns: Nikita is basically the same
- 19:17Jon: Yeah.
- 19:18I can see the cover.
- 19:19I can't pull the movie out
- 19:22Ryan: See, my problem is I'm just thinking of Pam Anderson in her
- 19:24film at that time, where she plays,
- 19:28Jon: Oh yeah, the, the action one?
- 19:31Ryan: Yeah.
- 19:31Is
- 19:31Jon: Barb Wire, yeah, yeah
- 19:35Kearns: Womp, womp,
- 19:35Jon: Yeah.
- 19:36Kearns: Uh,
- 19:37Jon: was a little later though.
- 19:39Ryan: 97?
- 19:40Jon: Yeah.
- 19:41Kearns: rental.
- 19:42That
- 19:42Jon: she wa-
- 19:42Kearns: the boys
- 19:44Jon: it- th- this was more about the, Snapdragon time
- 19:49Kearns: Exactly.
- 19:49the last Easter egg I noticed because I noticed this one in the wild.
- 19:52I was so proud of myself.
- 19:53Did you guys see the one in the pizza box?
- 19:57Ryan: Pineapple?
- 19:57Jon: No.
- 19:58No
- 19:59Kearns: the catchphrase on the pizza box says, "Come get some."
- 20:02Ryan: Oh,
- 20:02Jon: Oh, nice.
- 20:03I didn't see that.
- 20:04I did see it, but like,
- 20:06Kearns: Yeah, you didn't
- 20:06Jon: yeah, yeah.
- 20:07Kearns: was like, "Oh my God. Oh my God."
- 20:10Jon: yeah, I mean, you get the, landscaping truck, so you, know that
- 20:13there's gonna be a chainsaw around.
- 20:15Ryan: Yeah
- 20:16Jon: you get the continuation of w- probably one of my favorite series
- 20:20of Easter eggs is the continuation of the love for between, Nightmare on Elm
- 20:25Street and The Evil Dead series with the neighbor kids coming to invite
- 20:29Bridget to watch all the Nightmare on Elm Streets with them, even the bad ones.
- 20:34And then the, the other kid, "Yeah, there's no bad ones." I
- 20:37mean, there are, but we won't
- 20:39Kearns: Yeah.
- 20:41Ryan: That's for another day
- 20:42Kearns: of when that scene hits?
- 20:47Jon: Hmm.
- 20:48Yeah, yeah.
- 20:49Kearns: would be the guy to
- 20:49Jon: Yeah, yeah.
- 20:51Kearns: of them back to
- 20:51Jon: Yeah, yeah
- 20:53Kearns: Be
- 20:53Ryan: Oh, hell yeah.
- 20:54Kearns: That's it."
- 20:55Ryan: Uh, we, uh, once you get into it though, I won't even show the remake.
- 20:59won't go that far, and I own it
- 21:01Kearns: my
- 21:02Jon: No, you can't go th- that far.
- 21:04Ryan: I,
- 21:04Jon: That's too far
- 21:05Ryan: I'll just say Jackie Earl Haley's.
- 21:07Kearns: in a row
- 21:08Ryan: There's eight, eight in a row.
- 21:10Kearns: Plus the remake?
- 21:11Ryan: Eight and nine with the rem- I wouldn't even show the
- 21:13re- the remake is like if…
- 21:15Kearns: 24 hours.
- 21:16Ryan: Oh, it's… No, they're only like 80 minutes a pop.
- 21:19They're not that long.
- 21:2185 minutes
- 21:22Kearns: Oh, sorry.
- 21:22So we'll just be sitting in the same room for 14 watching Nightmare on
- 21:26Ryan: you might
- 21:27Jon: It's fine
- 21:28Ryan: the second one.
- 21:28That's about it.
- 21:30Jon: I don't know.
- 21:31I ge- generally, generally, unless I'm feeling very completist, one,
- 21:37three, and, uh, New Nightmare.
- 21:41Generally my rotation
- 21:43Kearns: New Nightmare was very good
- 21:46Ryan: New Night, yeah.
- 21:47I mean, though
- 21:48Kearns: was very good.
- 21:50Ryan: some,
- 21:50Kearns: that
- 21:50Ryan: yeah.
- 21:5194, God
- 21:53Kearns: in the theater as a kid.
- 21:53Remember the tongue that comes out of the phone?
- 21:56Ryan: Heather.
- 21:57Kearns: was pretty good.
- 21:58Ryan: I don't know
- 21:58Kearns: flip out on a bunch of kids too, 'cause they kept screaming stuff
- 22:01to scare people in the theater, and this giant guy stood up, turned around, and
- 22:05Jon: Nice.
- 22:09Kearns: he looked too, and he's just like, "Oh my God, they're gonna die.
- 22:13This is great."
- 22:14Ryan: I was,
- 22:14Jon: Nice.
- 22:15Kearns: It was a good experience.
- 22:16Ryan: I was gonna say I have to, I enjoy them all, um, one through,
- 22:20uh, one up to New Nightmare, and even with Freddy versus Jason.
- 22:24I feel like it's 'cause of my dad.
- 22:26My dad was a big Nightmare on
- 22:27Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 22:28Ryan: He, like Nightmare on Elm Street in his house was big.
- 22:32He had the cutout board.
- 22:34He had everything Nightmare.
- 22:36And then on the other side was Hellraiser, so that explains a lot
- 22:39of my love for those two franchises.
- 22:41But I
- 22:41Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 22:46Ryan: the Freddy Krueger character.
- 22:48Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 22:48Ryan: like yeah, you can see it as a repeat of like it's a nightmare,
- 22:52it's a dream, he keeps coming back.
- 22:54How does he come back?
- 22:55It's recycled.
- 22:56But you get more of the mentality of the character and the
- 23:00characters he's going after.
- 23:02Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 23:06Mm-hmm.
- 23:11So I, I wanna
- 23:14Kearns: everybody.
- 23:14If you have any questions, I'll give you his phone number.
- 23:17You can call him, ask him anything you want about it.
- 23:19Ryan: You ha- you have, you have to say the rhyme
- 23:22Jon: So, s- so, uh, like with this sort of longstanding Evil Dead/Nightmare on
- 23:26Elm Street mutual admiration situation, goes back to the first Evil Dead.
- 23:33Um, if, if you watch the first Evil Dead, there… And at one point
- 23:38there's a poster on the wall for The Hills Have Eyes, which is Wes Craven.
- 23:42Ryan: Yep.
- 23:43Jon: So Craven noticed that.
- 23:46In n- the first Nightmare on Elm Street, Nancy, when she's trying to stay awake,
- 23:51which mirrors something that Ash is gonna have to do a lot too, she's trying to
- 23:56stay awake by watching The Evil Dead.
- 24:00So then you jump to Evil Dead, and even in Ash vs.
- 24:05the Evil Dead, when Ash goes to the shed to, you know, weaponize
- 24:11himself with his chainsaw, hanging on the wall is Freddy's glove
- 24:17Kearns: Oh, I never noticed
- 24:18Ryan: In Evil Dead 2, right?
- 24:20Jon: Evil Dead 2 and in Ash vs Evil Dead
- 24:23Ryan: Okay.
- 24:24Necro Comicon also makes an
- 24:26Jon: mm-hmm.
- 24:27Ryan: Goes to Hell, by the way.
- 24:28Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 24:29We'll get to that.
- 24:29Um,
- 24:30Ryan: Word
- 24:31Jon: and then, then you have comic book crossovers that then,
- 24:34then sort of tie Jason into it.
- 24:39Ryan: Yep
- 24:39Jon: But so what I'm gonna ask you, and this sort of goes back to Evil Dead
- 24:43Rise and Lee Cronin's The Mummy, which Lee Cronin made after he made Evil Dead
- 24:49Rise, and he has insisted is within the same universe as The Evil Dead.
- 24:55Does that make a movie in the same universe?
- 24:59Or is this just an Easter egg?
- 25:01Kearns: I think that they're different things.
- 25:03Yeah, in this case, I can't say definitively either way, but I think
- 25:07Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 25:07Mm-hmm.
- 25:11Kearns: there are Easter eggs in films for things like appreciation of
- 25:14other films, and there is something about being in the same universe.
- 25:17I don't know if we could say that these are in the same universe as, as
- 25:20Nightmare on Elm Street, for example
- 25:22Jon: Yeah.
- 25:23I, I mean, I think what's established through this is that they, their
- 25:28universes each include those movies within them, but not necessarily
- 25:34that the events in Nightmare on Elm Street are happening in the same
- 25:40universe as the events in The Evil Dead
- 25:43Kearns: Yeah.
- 25:44Ryan: Here
- 25:45Kearns: I buy that more than… I nothing to say that they're not
- 25:48in the same universe really, but
- 25:51Jon: No.
- 25:51Kearns: nothing to say that Godzilla's not in their same universe either.
- 25:54Jon: Yeah
- 25:54Ryan: That's a, that's, that's a far limb, buddy.
- 25:57a-- There's no Godzilla.
- 25:58Jon: I mean, you,
- 25:59Kearns: around.
- 25:59He's
- 26:00Jon: but you can, you can make that case with a lot of things.
- 26:03Like, i- if the same actors are in mo- s- a whole bunch of movies,
- 26:06are they the same universe?
- 26:08Kearns: Right
- 26:09Jon: like we were saying before we started, is Footloose and the first
- 26:15Friday the 13th the same universe?
- 26:17Ryan: believe people think that, but kudos
- 26:19Jon: They don't.
- 26:20They, they don't think that.
- 26:21It, but it's just, it's just a, a, an over-the-top example of that concept.
- 26:28And for me,
- 26:29Kearns: What,
- 26:29Jon: I watched Lee Cronin's The Mummy.
- 26:32Kearns: are talking
- 26:32Jon: Yeah.
- 26:33I watched Lee Cronin's The Mummy yesterday, and that, to me, that
- 26:38was the extent of the connection, is there's a voice in a recording that's
- 26:44the same as the voice in the recording on the records that Danny finds.
- 26:49And I don't know if you guys caught this, Bruce Campbell's appearance in
- 26:53The Evil Dead Rise is on those records
- 26:56Kearns: Yeah.
- 26:56Ryan: He's one of the priests,
- 26:57Kearns: catch that in the wild.
- 26:59I did catch
- 27:01Jon: He, mm-hmm
- 27:02Kearns: eggs were all squared away, and I f- I learned about that Easter egg.
- 27:07It's
- 27:07Jon: His, he,
- 27:07Kearns: in the record
- 27:08Jon: he, he's the, he's the voice saying, "Burn the book, it's
- 27:11evil," or wh- you know, yeah.
- 27:14That's Bruce
- 27:15Ryan: Oh.
- 27:16The, okay.
- 27:18it was one of the priests
- 27:20Kearns: Pretty cool, right?
- 27:21Ryan: Well, it would make sense with all the journey he's gone because, I mean, I
- 27:26mean, Evil… Not to bring up Evil Dead 2013, but the best part is his cameo,
- 27:31and like the idea is there's multiple universes, and that's what kinda like
- 27:35Sam Raimi established in interviews.
- 27:38like it could just be Ash traveling through universes or something
- 27:42and it got caught on the record.
- 27:45I
- 27:46Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 27:46Ryan: if we can step back real quick,
- 27:47Kearns: Well, can we clarify that real quick though?
- 27:49There's multiple universes within the Evil Dead franchise?
- 27:52Ryan: So evil dead, evil
- 27:54Kearns: about the three different Necronomicons within the
- 27:56Ryan: No.
- 27:56So Evil Dead, uh, Evil Dead 2, Evil Dead: Army of Darkness, and Ash vs.
- 28:02Evil Dead's one universe.
- 28:03The Evil Dead 2013's a separate universe, and I believe this new
- 28:08trilogy is a separate universe as well.
- 28:11However, the book connects them all.
- 28:14Originally, what they were supposed to do after the 2013 one was connect
- 28:18Ash to that, but because of the negative reviews, they never went
- 28:23forward, and that's why we have Rice
- 28:27Kearns: Got it.
- 28:27All right.
- 28:28That's
- 28:28Jon: what you're
- 28:28Kearns: Lore.
- 28:29Good to know
- 28:31Jon: What you're telling me ba- the way I'm interpreting this, the first two Evil
- 28:35Deads, Army of Darkness, Ash Versus the Evil Dead are like Halloween one and two.
- 28:41Evil Dead 2013 is Halloween III.
- 28:45Ryan: Yes.
- 28:46Yes
- 28:47Jon: this new trilogy is everything that comes after Halloween III
- 28:52Ryan: You nailed it right on the head,
- 28:54Jon: Okay.
- 28:54Kearns: Yeah.
- 28:55Jon: So it was, it was, so it me- it means we may be in for some tough
- 28:59times with the Evil Dead franchise
- 29:02Kearns: For real,
- 29:03Ryan: But,
- 29:04Kearns: For real
- 29:05Ryan: you guys, when we were talking about, um, interpretation, Tarantino
- 29:09said something perfect, and it was about his own films, of course.
- 29:12Like, whenever you watch Pulp Fiction and the briefcase is open, you see the gold.
- 29:18We all make the interpretation.
- 29:19Like, for me, I think it's Marsalis Wallace's soul.
- 29:23You know?
- 29:25That's what kinda like he's doing with The Mummy, and what a lot of people
- 29:29do is allows audiences to determine if something is connected or not,
- 29:34which I have a lot of respect, and it kinda gives the audience control.
- 29:37Now, I don't think The Mummy's connected to The Evil Dead at all, but some people
- 29:43might go, "It is because of the voice."
- 29:46And even with the Kevin Bacon thing with Footloose and Friday the 13th.
- 29:49I'm trying to make it a thing now.
- 29:51You
- 29:51Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 29:51Ryan: he, he left the town and he went to camping.
- 29:55But it's, it's just fun stuff for the audience to make that connection.
- 30:00But there are legitimate ones, like Michael Keaton's
- 30:03character in Jackie Brown.
- 30:05character, the same character appears in another movie I think two years
- 30:09later from a different director
- 30:10Kearns: that's interlocking the movies in the same universe when they do
- 30:13Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 30:14Yeah.
- 30:15Ryan: But
- 30:15Kearns: There's a
- 30:15Ryan: cool
- 30:16Kearns: that and the same actor playing a character of
- 30:18Jon: Yeah.
- 30:19Kearns: in
- 30:19Jon: Yeah.
- 30:20Kearns: That's what I'm trying to make sure we don't get
- 30:22caught in the soundbite of
- 30:24Jon: Mm-hmm
- 30:25Kearns: like, "Every movie Kevin Bacon's in is in the same universe." No
- 30:30Jon: I, what do you mean no?
- 30:32Ryan: says this.
- 30:32It's a clone.
- 30:33Kearns: Mystic River is
- 30:34Jon: Yeah.
- 30:35Kearns: universe
- 30:36Jon: he sur- he survived the arrow through the neck and that's where he went.
- 30:40Kearns: that's where he went.
- 30:41Jon: Yeah.
- 30:42Kearns: agent
- 30:43Ryan: Yeah, to
- 30:43Jon: Then, and that's why, that's why he can see ghosts in Stir of Echoes
- 30:49Kearns: Out of out stereo that goes Don't forget it becomes
- 30:52invisible at one point too.
- 30:53Jon: Uh-huh.
- 30:54Yeah.
- 30:55Yeah
- 30:56Kearns: All right.
- 30:56Don't we- do we have a game tonight?
- 30:57Let's
- 30:58Jon: Of cour- of course we have a game.
- 31:00It, it's a, we're back to our standard slasher stash.
- 31:03It's gonna be, um, five and five.
- 31:06Uh, three and five rather.
- 31:08Ryan: I was like, "Wait a minute, we're
- 31:10Jon: Three and five.
- 31:11Oh, I forgot to open them.
- 31:12Close your eyes, guys
- 31:14Kearns: Ha ha.
- 31:15I will not.
- 31:16Ryan: I'm not.
- 31:17Jon: Oh, well, well then fine.
- 31:19Kearns: Damn.
- 31:19I just saw some good stuff there.
- 31:22Jon: yeah, you saw, you saw a download screen my… Nothing actually.
- 31:29Uh, I don't need that
- 31:32All right, now we'll re-share for you.
- 31:36Kearns: Okay.
- 31:36You, I lost Ryan's feed too when you, when you did that, which makes it even funnier.
- 31:40So now I'm just alone
- 31:43Ryan: No,
- 31:43Jon: All right
- 31:45Kearns: No, but I couldn't see you until he
- 31:47Ryan: Oh.
- 31:47Kearns: Okay
- 31:48Jon: All right.
- 31:49Can you guys see my screen?
- 31:51Kearns: All right, are we doing,
- 31:53Jon: It is themed.
- 31:54You can guess
- 31:57It's, uh,
- 31:58Kearns: Crappy remakes.
- 32:00Jon: uh, it's, it's a nice, it's a nice, nice guess.
- 32:02It is not, however, correct.
- 32:04I'm not gonna punish you, but, 'cause this li- ke- stashing some of these movies
- 32:10might be punishment of its- in its- in itself, so… Anyway, The Crow , 2024.
- 32:17Are we slashing or stashing?
- 32:19Kearns: gonna slash this.
- 32:21Jon: Uh
- 32:21Kearns: he's holding a katana on the cover.
- 32:23I'm s- I wish I could slash everything about this movie
- 32:26Ryan: You know what makes me sad is the author, 'cause I got to meet him.
- 32:29Um, he was so hopeful for this remake, 'cause he was like, "They're
- 32:34gonna take my vision and make it what it is." And I'm like, "No, the
- 32:38closest you're gonna get it, and the definite one is Brandon Lee." Just
- 32:44Jon: I, this is not,
- 32:46Kearns: the, you
- 32:46Jon: this is not my crow.
- 32:48Kearns: The Crow was forged in sorrow.
- 32:51No.
- 32:51Yeah, good
- 32:52Jon: This,
- 32:52Kearns: Not my
- 32:52Ryan: Yep.
- 32:53Jon: this is not my crow.
- 32:54All right
- 32:55Kearns: Even the kids don't like this movie
- 32:56Ryan: No, it's
- 32:58Jon: All right, movie, movie number two is Friday the 13th Part V: A New Beginning
- 33:09Kearns: That's the thing, bro
- 33:12Ryan: The fifth part in a movie?
- 33:15Jon: It is the fifth part.
- 33:16Kearns: Hey, but
- 33:16Jon: These are all part fives.
- 33:18That's the fifth Crow movie.
- 33:20That's the fifth Crow movie.
- 33:22Yep.
- 33:23Yep.
- 33:24Kearns: How did
- 33:24Jon: That's the fifth Crow
- 33:26Ryan: part Friday 13th, part five.
- 33:28Jon: he, he got it from this one for sure
- 33:32Ryan: But then you think about it, Evil Dead, Evil Dead II, Army of Darkness,
- 33:36Evil Dead 2013, Rise is the fifth,
- 33:39Kearns: was
- 33:39Ryan: and
- 33:40Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 33:44Ryan: I did.
- 33:45Wait, hold on.
- 33:45Do I get an extra…
- 33:46Kearns: saw part
- 33:47Ryan: What?
- 33:48Jon: No.
- 33:49No, there's no ex- We're not there.
- 33:51Ryan: No.
- 33:53Jon: be- because,
- 33:53Kearns: night
- 33:53Jon: because
- 33:56I, I, I honestly, I think you're gonna struggle to stash, you're both gonna
- 34:01struggle to stash three movies here.
- 34:03I'll tell you what, if you get, if you, if you get stuck, I'll
- 34:08let you have the fourth one.
- 34:10But I don't think you're gonna want it
- 34:13Ryan: Yeah, but the thing is, is I do enjoy f- the fifth.
- 34:15Like I do, I'm gonna stash part five 'cause I do like part five.
- 34:19I think it's unique for Friday the 13th and the direction they were taking it.
- 34:22But I do like Halloween 5, 'cause it connects to the fourth one.
- 34:27Kearns: I doubt he's gonna put that up here
- 34:28Ryan: He might have.
- 34:29He might have.
- 34:30Kearns: 5."
- 34:31Ryan: That's your, uh, the shoot scene.
- 34:32Kearns: "Halloween 4."
- 34:34Ryan: No,
- 34:34Kearns: five?
- 34:34I
- 34:34Ryan: that's f-
- 34:35Jon: No, four, four is the one with Ted Hollister
- 34:37Kearns: scene.
- 34:38Yeah, four's the shoot scene
- 34:40Ryan: Uh, so real quick, I was, um, back, um, I'm back in school, ladies and
- 34:45gentlemen, and, uh, to write papers I have to have a movie on in the background.
- 34:49I always go with horror.
- 34:51So the first thing I did, and I was gonna text you guys, but I was so
- 34:54busy typing, it was Halloween 4, and the scene came on with, "Goddammit
- 34:58Earl, you shot Ted Hollister."
- 35:01Jon: And sh-
- 35:02Ryan: And I'm
- 35:02Jon: yeah.
- 35:03Ryan: just laughing.
- 35:05Jon: Shit, Earl, it's Ted
- 35:07Ryan: Such an underrated sequel
- 35:09Jon: Hollister.
- 35:11Kearns: That's a
- 35:11Jon: All right.
- 35:12Kearns, stash or slash, slash
- 35:16Ryan: I'm not even gonna say blasphemy 'cause it's, it's not even the best,
- 35:20but it does something different, which I
- 35:23Jon: All right.
- 35:24Movie number three.
- 35:25Kearns: Docking.
- 35:26Ryan: Oh,
- 35:26Jon: The Fly II from 1989.
- 35:30Kearns: the fifth in the Fly
- 35:31Jon: This is the fifth Fly movie
- 35:35Ryan: Vincent Price was in the first two sequels.
- 35:37Kearns: stash this either.
- 35:38This is terrible
- 35:40Ryan: Is this the opening where she gives birth to the baby fly too?
- 35:45Like they continue it
- 35:47Jon: I think, mm, I don't, I don't remember.
- 35:50I remember they, I remember this one had the song in the commercial.
- 35:54Uh, "Hush little baby, don't you cry just because your dad was The Fly."
- 36:02It was amazing
- 36:03Kearns: Oh.
- 36:05If I'd known that jingle, I might have stashed it.
- 36:07Oh.
- 36:08Jon: All
- 36:09Kearns: I am
- 36:10Jon: All right.
- 36:10Kearns: guys.
- 36:11Sorry for all the groaning.
- 36:13All right, let's see what's next
- 36:14Jon: Movie four.
- 36:16Rocky V
- 36:18Ryan: How many slashes is this?
- 36:19Kearns: I hate you.
- 36:20I'm gonna
- 36:20Jon: It's, it's three and five.
- 36:22Kearns: so much
- 36:23Ryan: It's, it's three stashes, five slashes.
- 36:26Yeah, I'll
- 36:27Jon: Yep
- 36:28Ryan: V. I, I don't…
- 36:29Kearns: bad.
- 36:29Ryan: Don't
- 36:30Jon: I told you I,
- 36:31Ryan: Don't, don't sta-
- 36:32Jon: I, I think, I think by, by the end of this list you're gonna
- 36:36be begging for extra slashes
- 36:39Ryan: What do you prefer, this or Rocky Balboa?
- 36:43This or Rocky Balboa
- 36:45Kearns: Balboa compared this.
- 36:45I
- 36:46Jon: I liked more than this.
- 36:47The Rocky
- 36:48Kearns: he's
- 36:48Jon: just silly.
- 36:49Kearns: son in Balboa.
- 36:50Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 36:52Kearns: It's
- 36:52Jon: But f-
- 36:53Kearns: Rocky
- 36:54Jon: for-
- 36:54Kearns: is the one that's, is better than Rocky V, but it's like, yeah
- 37:00What are you
- 37:01Jon: I, it w- this is another, this is another one.
- 37:02When I rewatch the Rocky movies, I go, most of the time I go
- 37:06one through four and that's it.
- 37:07That's enough
- 37:10I almost never do five in Rocky Balboa.
- 37:13Kearns: It's, it's unnecessary
- 37:15Jon: I haven't seen the last two Creed movies.
- 37:17I saw the first Creed.
- 37:21Okay
- 37:22Kearns: They, they chose the worst person for him to fight
- 37:24in Balboa too, by the way.
- 37:26Um, Creed one is watchable.
- 37:28The rest of the Creed movies are garbage.
- 37:30I said it.
- 37:33Fight
- 37:33Jon: Didn't even bother.
- 37:34Ryan: I
- 37:34Jon: The, the, I
- 37:36Ryan: before I make an opinion
- 37:37Kearns: I'm not a
- 37:37Jon: The f…
- 37:38Kearns: fan either, really.
- 37:39He's not,
- 37:40Jon: We, we have established that.
- 37:42Kearns: Sinners episode
- 37:43Jon: We have established that.
- 37:45Ryan: man.
- 37:45Jon: All right.
- 37:46You guys ready to go on?
- 37:47Movie number five
- 37:49Kearns: We got left with Michael B. Jordan because Chadwick Boseman died.
- 37:53Jon: Yep.
- 37:54Kearns: happened
- 37:54Ryan: Ah, but I'm gonna stash
- 37:56Jon: Nightmare on Elm Street 5
- 37:58Kearns: Dream Child I'll stash too.
- 38:00Ryan: Is that the dr- it is the Dream Child, yep.
- 38:02'Cause it's Dream Warriors, Master, Child.
- 38:07This one had the, uh… Yeah, there it is, the creepy, um, uh,
- 38:12Jon: Stroller?
- 38:13Ryan: There we go.
- 38:13Kearns: and net.
- 38:14stroller is better
- 38:16Jon: Buggy
- 38:17Ryan: This one, was this the one where he crushes the girl
- 38:19in the bug, the bug thing?
- 38:22Kearns: Oh, I
- 38:22Jon: I don't remember.
- 38:23Kearns: he puts her… She gets stuck on the fly
- 38:25Ryan: Yes
- 38:26Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 38:27Kearns: that's a tough scene
- 38:28Jon: All right
- 38:29Ryan: and the baby having nightmares
- 38:32Jon: Movie number
- 38:34Kearns: Here
- 38:35Jon: six.
- 38:36There it is, Halloween 5
- 38:40Ryan: Stash.
- 38:41Stash.
- 38:43I'm fine with that.
- 38:43Kearns: actress in this, the little girl.
- 38:46Ryan: Danielle Harris
- 38:47Kearns: uh, she's
- 38:48Jon: Harris.
- 38:49Kearns: uh, Full House and stuff too.
- 38:51That's her name, Danielle Harris.
- 38:52She's like
- 38:53Jon: Mm-hmm
- 38:53Kearns: friend that gets you into trouble in a ton of t- TV shows.
- 38:57Jon: And she grew up to be the, yeah, she grew up to be the badass one.
- 39:01Yeah, that rounds you out
- 39:05You have, Ryan, you, you have the option.
- 39:07Kearns: left
- 39:08Jon: Uh, I wouldn't be so sure.
- 39:10Movie number seven.
- 39:13Kearns: Son of a
- 39:13Jon: That's… Da- why is that the wrong poster?
- 39:15That's not the poster I downloaded.
- 39:17It's Fanta- it's Phantasm
- 39:18Kearns: Lord of the Dead.
- 39:19Jon: have to get you guys the right poster for when this actually comes out.
- 39:23Phantasm Ravager.
- 39:25Sorry, Kearns.
- 39:26Ryan, do, would you like to exercise your extra-
- 39:32Ryan: But what's your last movie then?
- 39:34Kearns: Ravager over all my choices
- 39:36Ryan: know what?
- 39:37Yeah, I'm gonna stash Ravager.
- 39:38I love Phantasm.
- 39:40After we covered Phantasm, like I understand now when they did
- 39:45a lot of reviews for the fifth film, as we discussed, you have to
- 39:48be a fan to enjoy the last film.
- 39:51You have to enjoy all the whole story to enjoy the
- 39:55Jon: All right.
- 39:56So movie number eight, you both have slashed.
- 39:59I think you're probably both gonna be a little disappointed because you
- 40:03have slashed Clint Eastwood's Deadpool
- 40:07Kearns: No way.
- 40:08Dirty Harry in the Deadpool?
- 40:10Oh my God.
- 40:11Ryan: So we
- 40:12Jon: Yeah.
- 40:12Ryan: Liam Neeson's career, we eliminate Jim Carrey's career.
- 40:17you wanna know something though?
- 40:18Sudden Impact is a better film than the Deadpool
- 40:22Jon: Uh, I mean, of course it is.
- 40:23It, they, I mean, the, the, I, I, I think what we just discovered is that the first
- 40:29one is better than all of the part fives
- 40:33Kearns: Yeah, 100%.
- 40:35Oh, come on, find something to argue
- 40:37Ryan: Out
- 40:37Jon: We, yeah
- 40:38Ryan: out of, out of, hold on, hold on.
- 40:40Out of the Dirty Harry movies, I think the best one is Magnum
- 40:43Force, which is the sequel
- 40:45Jon: Okay, I mean, all right.
- 40:46Fair, fair enough.
- 40:48Fair enough.
- 40:48I, I,
- 40:49Kearns: are
- 40:49Jon: I, I, I, I will, I will amend, I will amend my… No, I won't
- 40:54because the, because the state- the statement stands is there is not a
- 40:58single one of these movies where part five is better than the first one
- 41:04Ryan: Yeah.
- 41:05Oh yeah, you're f- okay, fair.
- 41:07Fair on that.
- 41:08Fair
- 41:09Kearns: put him on notice about the same thing,
- 41:11Ryan: Fair.
- 41:12Fair.
- 41:13Kearns: you guys are missing again.
- 41:15Ryan: Oh,
- 41:16Jon: Uh-uh.
- 41:16Ryan: We can hear you.
- 41:18We can see you
- 41:19Kearns: without being able to see you.
- 41:21I forgot how I fix this.
- 41:23I think I
- 41:24Ryan: Oh y- um, corner?
- 41:27Yeah
- 41:28Kearns: Get the box.
- 41:29It's in the box.
- 41:30Speaker and then back out to gallery.
- 41:33Yeah.
- 41:34Um, all right.
- 41:35So
- 41:36Ryan: That was a good game
- 41:37Kearns: going to be accelerating towards the end.
- 41:39It was a good game.
- 41:40Towards the end of this podcast.
- 41:42Jon: Yeah, I like that one
- 41:44Kearns: so this even an Evil Dead movie?
- 41:48Kinda talked about that, but is this even an Evil Dead movie?
- 41:50Ryan: Yes
- 41:51Jon: Kind of, I guess, I guess in, in a sense
- 41:57Kearns: Spiritually?
- 41:58It is.
- 41:59I think it
- 42:00Jon: Yeah, I mean, you, have the core elements.
- 42:03I miss the campiness.
- 42:05I do.
- 42:05I, you know, I thi- I think we've established my love for campy anything,
- 42:11Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 42:12Jon: especially in horror
- 42:14Kearns: It's, hard to have an Evil Dead movie without the camp, and this
- 42:17definitely does not have the camp.
- 42:19Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 42:20Ryan: but
- 42:20Jon: And I…
- 42:21Kearns: will have the camp.
- 42:22I think they're gonna go hard in the paint again, trying to reimagine
- 42:25the franchise for the modern
- 42:26Jon: Mm-hmm
- 42:26Kearns: and I'm not sure the kids are ready for it
- 42:28Ryan: Have you seen the trailer for it yet?
- 42:31Yeah.
- 42:33the recent one where he goes on the dishwasher with the knives.
- 42:36I mean, they're just going with the whole gory aspect again and
- 42:39just taking it up to a notch.
- 42:41But the campiness, yeah, the campiness is what made Evil Dead, but the first
- 42:46film is what established it as a horror.
- 42:49that's what it is, is what we gotta remember.
- 42:51It's a, it's a horror film.
- 42:52I mean, yeah, the comedy adds to that layer, but what Rise
- 42:56Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 42:56Mm-hmm.
- 42:56Ryan: that horror back with, which is not over the line like 2013, in my opinion.
- 43:04Kearns: ask you, let me ask you a question.
- 43:05Ryan: Yeah
- 43:06Kearns: a plain pizza pie, you get olives on 30% of that pizza pie, is
- 43:10that the same as a pizza pie that has nothing on it or just olives on it?
- 43:16Ryan: What is this, Monty Python and the Holy Grail?
- 43:17Am I gonna jump off a bridge?
- 43:19Like, is
- 43:19Kearns: Is that the same thing?
- 43:21Would you be happy with the same thing being brought to your door
- 43:24Ryan: I wouldn't want olives on my pizza.
- 43:25Kearns: If it had…
- 43:26Jon: Yeah.
- 43:27Ryan: I wouldn't
- 43:27Jon: I'd be, I'd be happy w-
- 43:28Kearns: Dead
- 43:29Jon: be happier with the 30% one.
- 43:33I'd be happier with 30% olives than 100% olives
- 43:37Kearns: In Army of Darkness, it's 70% olives.
- 43:41It's 70% olives.
- 43:42It's way more campy.
- 43:44So it's not the s-
- 43:44Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 43:44Mm-hmm.
- 43:46Kearns: a, a major element that was part of the movie out of it, which is
- 43:51what I think John's argument was too.
- 43:53And
- 43:54Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 43:54Kearns: not to say… And I understand what you're saying too.
- 43:56What they did, what their choice was, was to go full-on horror, and
- 44:01even, like, make it even crazier than anything that's coming out right now.
- 44:04Try to get real gritty with it.
- 44:06we're, we're kinda nostalgic.
- 44:09We missed a little bit of that campy vibe.
- 44:12They didn't even
- 44:12Jon: for sure.
- 44:14For sure.
- 44:14Like, like Ryan, you said after you watched this you had to go watch Spinal
- 44:18Tap because you needed something lighter.
- 44:21After this I went,
- 44:22Ryan: Yeah.
- 44:22Jon: I went campy.
- 44:23I had to go find campy stuff to watch.
- 44:26So I watched a movie called Arbor Day
- 44:31Kearns: He wanted the tree scene, that's why
- 44:34Jon: Our, our Arbor Day is 100% not something we will ever
- 44:38cover on this, unless, you know, probably a Patreon kind of thing.
- 44:42It is fantastically terrible, fantastically campy
- 44:47Kearns: We definitely have to do Patreon for movies that are so bad they're good
- 44:51Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 44:51Ryan: Um, basically the whole Puppet Master franchise besides the first
- 44:55one, which we'll cover later this year
- 44:57Kearns: movies were pretty good, yeah.
- 44:59Ryan: Uh, the first, the first three.
- 45:01The five, first five.
- 45:04Retro.
- 45:05Kearns: 'cause
- 45:05Ryan: They're all good
- 45:06Kearns: girl.
- 45:07like HBO would be on the
- 45:09Jon: You went, you went from saying none of them are good to the first one
- 45:13is good, to the first three are good, to the first five are good, to all of
- 45:18them are good in the span of 30 seconds.
- 45:20Ryan: That was a cash cow.
- 45:21Six was…
- 45:23Kearns: on this issue
- 45:26Ryan: don't mess with Puppet Master.
- 45:27All right
- 45:28Kearns: Hey, I got a question for you guys.
- 45:30Effects in this movie compared to the first ones, we're talking a
- 45:34lot of CGI, but this one does have practical effects too, Evil Dead Rise.
- 45:38Jon: No
- 45:39Kearns: Did you like the, effects of this better than the first trilogy?
- 45:44Ryan: Hmm.
- 45:45Jon: I mean, there, there's a charm,
- 45:47Ryan: I…
- 45:48Jon: there's a charm in the first ones.
- 45:51But I mean, you know, as far as like splatter and gore, I think these
- 45:56are just, this is just as effective
- 45:59Kearns: I think I'm more looking at the makeup than the splatter and gore,
- 46:02Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 46:05Yeah, I,
- 46:06Kearns: give Rise its flowers there, although it does a good job of it
- 46:09Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 46:10the makeup is more, I guess, realistic would be the way to go
- 46:16Ryan: You're having a hard time here.
- 46:18Kearns: Oh, we've never had John on the back foot before
- 46:20Ryan: You see, I don't wanna compliment this movie, but I need… I'm going
- 46:23Jon: I, no, I mean,
- 46:25Kearns: that
- 46:25Jon: I g- I, I think
- 46:26Kearns: shines the most is probably the makeup
- 46:29Jon: Yeah.
- 46:29Yeah.
- 46:30Like I, it's, it's a more realistic look.
- 46:33It's not the Deadites you're used to seeing.
- 46:35It's not like they're not melty or gooey or any of that.
- 46:39They're, you know, it's, she, um, Ellie is in particular
- 46:44is pretty carved up facially.
- 46:50Ryan: Yeah
- 46:52Kearns: We, yeah.
- 46:53Yep.
- 46:55Ryan: But it,
- 46:55Jon: Yeah
- 46:56Ryan: it doesn't have the flair of the originals.
- 46:58That's the thing.
- 46:59It doesn't have like, like I can watch this and yeah, you can say that's
- 47:05a Deadite, you can see any other film now and see a similar thing.
- 47:11But you watch the original trilogy, especially the first one, she first
- 47:16is possessed by the Deadites and like the granny face in the cellar.
- 47:22that's really haunting and that's like no matter as a kid, adult, when you first see
- 47:27that or watching it again, it stays etched into your mind because it's different
- 47:32Kearns: like
- 47:33Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 47:33Kearns: a lot of planning and a lot of talent and a lot of artistry, and also
- 47:37like Q-tips and spray and all that to make the mask itself back then, to make
- 47:42everything look the way they did, the
- 47:44Ryan: Love.
- 47:44Love went into it
- 47:46Kearns: I think I gotta
- 47:46Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 47:51Kearns: the love in Rise.
- 47:52I think they did a good job in Rise, but I would, I give the edge
- 47:56to the original personally, but
- 47:58Ryan: is
- 47:58Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 47:58Ryan: you.
- 47:59Kearns: th-
- 47:59Ryan: Rise is a thank you though, if you wanna say that.
- 48:03It's a thank you for like, you know, thank you for ma- like to Sam Raimi, to
- 48:07Bruce Campbell for making these films.
- 48:09This is what I'm gonna do to show like how much I love it.
- 48:13And Lee Cronin, you know,
- 48:15Jon: I mean,
- 48:16Ryan: It's a love letter.
- 48:17No?
- 48:17Kearns: see that in
- 48:18Ryan: No?
- 48:19can
- 48:19Jon: I mean,
- 48:20Kearns: it to be, Ryan.
- 48:21Jon: yeah.
- 48:21Kearns: if
- 48:22Jon: Like Ra- w-
- 48:22Ryan: it for it to be
- 48:24Jon: Ramy and Campbell are executive producers on this, so
- 48:27it's not like they're not involved
- 48:31Ryan: Was Campbell?
- 48:31Campbell was?
- 48:32Jon: Yeah.
- 48:33Ryan: just
- 48:33Jon: Yeah, they're bo- both of them are executive produced this, so it's
- 48:36not… It- they're not not involved.
- 48:40They're, there.
- 48:41It's this, so like, are they paying homage to themselves?
- 48:46Like, did they find someone who would pay homage to them for them?
- 48:51You know, I think there's some element of, yeah, th- this is what I grew
- 48:55up on, and th- I wanna show some love for it in the writing of it.
- 48:59But I think at the end of the day, this was, uh, you know, the
- 49:04opportunity to d- to make an Evil Dead movie, and they jumped on it
- 49:09Kearns: Yeah.
- 49:11Yeah.
- 49:12Ryan: did help them
- 49:13Kearns: your bubble, buddy.
- 49:14I don't, Jen, I'm not trying to be argumentative with you,
- 49:15but I just don't, I don't
- 49:17Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 49:18I mean, I mean,
- 49:19Kearns: romantic view of
- 49:21Jon: I, I, think there are e- there are people interested in seeing the
- 49:25Evil Dead franchise continue, inc- probably including Raimi and Campbell,
- 49:30but they don't wanna do it themselves.
- 49:33You know, they moved on to other projects
- 49:35Ryan: Wait, you, you don't know that Raimi basically wrote out the
- 49:39whole f- franchise for them, right?
- 49:42Jon: I mean, it's there, but, but, but Cronin's got the screenwriting
- 49:46credit on this, not Ca- uh, not Raimi
- 49:49Ryan: Yeah, so with the screenwriting, but the storyline-wise, Ramy's
- 49:52Jon: Yeah, I mean,
- 49:53Kearns: he sketched it out?
- 49:54Yeah, plotted it out.
- 49:55Okay.
- 49:56Jon: Yeah, but, but like they, like they, they say they, they, the two of
- 50:00them have like moved on to other things.
- 50:02I mean, unfortunately for Bruce at this point it's health.
- 50:06Ryan: Yeah
- 50:07Jon: you know, Sam Raimi's moved on to doing other things.
- 50:10You know, he got into the superhero money.
- 50:12He got into other money.
- 50:14He's, you know, he's returned to some level of horror this year
- 50:19with, uh, Send Help, which I haven't watched yet, but you know, he,
- 50:24he's sort of, he- they've moved on.
- 50:28Kearns: It
- 50:29Jon: think this-
- 50:29Kearns: kind of another point.
- 50:30Oh, I'm sorry, I'll let you finish
- 50:32Jon: I think this, if you, if you're somebody who wants to see more of the
- 50:35Evil Dead, this is what you should expect
- 50:39Kearns: And that brings us to the next point, which is perfect segue, Mr. John.
- 50:43And that's what, how does it make you feel that the franchise has
- 50:46changed directions this way with losing the camp and everything?
- 50:49We see how Ryan feels about it.
- 50:51I think I know how John feels about it.
- 50:53Like, what happens when… And d- you can expand this to any franchise that
- 50:57you love and it switches up gears
- 51:00Jon: it's funny because something like Texas Chainsaw Massacre, after the
- 51:06first one went more into the camp,
- 51:09Ryan: Yes
- 51:09Jon: I fell off.
- 51:11But this, but Evil Dead moved away from the camp, and I th- I think I like when it
- 51:17stays in that original realm more, which I, I know is limiting, and it's not how,
- 51:24how I, I am with a lot of other things.
- 51:27Like authors, I wanna see the full range of what they can write.
- 51:31Musicians, I like, I like AC/DC, but they've made the
- 51:34same album for s- 50 years.
- 51:37Ryan: Yeah.
- 51:37Jon: You know, I, I want music-- I want bands that are gonna
- 51:40be inventive in what they do.
- 51:42Still identifiable, but inventive
- 51:46Kearns: See what you're saying.
- 51:47Ryan: I agree with that
- 51:48Jon: Um,
- 51:49Kearns: want that blueprint to stay there
- 51:51Jon: if you're gonna be a part of a franchise, I want it to feel
- 51:54spiritually like the other ones
- 51:59But, you know, at the same time, like I said, I think if you wanna
- 52:02see an Evil Dead movie, this is what you're gonna have to expect
- 52:06Ryan: Gotcha.
- 52:07Kearns: Okay.
- 52:09Ryan: But
- 52:09Jon: I think, I think it's what you should expect
- 52:12Ryan: that bad, a- as long as it's for the better though,
- 52:15Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 52:16I,
- 52:16Ryan: I mean
- 52:17Jon: I think he, I think you should want this to be where
- 52:19you go with The Evil Dead.
- 52:21I don't think you, unless you're getting Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell
- 52:25back involved, I don't think you wanna see it go back to the camp
- 52:28because nobody's gonna do it as well
- 52:33Kearns: Yeah, I was thinking
- 52:35Ryan: Yeah.
- 52:35Kearns: too.
- 52:35Who is out there right now?
- 52:36Who would they cast?
- 52:37Ryan Reynolds or something?
- 52:38Like, who's gonna, who are they gonna try to get to capture
- 52:41Bruce Campbell's ability to play
- 52:43Ryan: I should… No, not Ryan Reynolds.
- 52:46I mean, no, you can't, you can't, you can't replace the king, baby
- 52:51Jon: A Skarsgård.
- 52:51A Scar- a Skarsgård or a Hemsworth
- 52:54Kearns: Ugh.
- 52:55Ryan: No, no, thank you
- 52:56Kearns: realm.
- 52:57They need an attractive leading man that
- 53:00Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 53:00Kearns: to have charisma of that level and that
- 53:03Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 53:03Kearns: kind of free it up and yuck it up a bit like he did.
- 53:06Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 53:07Kearns: there right now I
- 53:07Jon: I,
- 53:08Kearns: of
- 53:08Jon: and
- 53:08Kearns: pull that off or who'd want to pull that off
- 53:11Jon: An unconventionally handsome lead.
- 53:13Like not someone who's like Brad Pitt handsome, but someone who's like, "Hey,
- 53:18that guy's good-looking in a weird way."
- 53:22Kearns: Yeah.
- 53:23Ryan: Oh, Dean from Supernatural
- 53:26Kearns: Uh, okay.
- 53:28Jon: I'm not seeing that.
- 53:29I'm s- that's,
- 53:30Ryan: name.
- 53:30Dean.
- 53:31Jon: that's, that's, I don't remember wh- one of them is Padalecki.
- 53:34I don't remember who the other one is.
- 53:37I don't know which one is which, but n- I mean, they're kind of both too trad-
- 53:41Kearns: in my lifetime where I've heard the women find them hot, and I'm like,
- 53:45Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 53:46They, they, I, uh, they, I think they're too traditionally attractive
- 53:53Ryan: Keys to the car.
- 53:54Chicks dig the car
- 53:58Jon: Let's take the long ball
- 54:00Kearns: But there it is.
- 54:03There it is.
- 54:04Now we know.
- 54:05Ryan: Yeah
- 54:06Kearns: We are moving into wood chipper.
- 54:11This is
- 54:11Jon: The wood chipper.
- 54:13Kearns: in a row we get to discuss a wood chipper.
- 54:14Jon: Yeah
- 54:15Ryan: Yep.
- 54:17Jon: And, and this is the moment Evil Dead Rise has sunk into…
- 54:21Yeah, I mean, it's funnier.
- 54:23It's, yeah.
- 54:24Um, this is, this is where we've sunk fully into body horror.
- 54:28Ryan: in there
- 54:30Jon: We have, we have all, all the Deadites, the Deadites melded
- 54:34together for the wood chipper.
- 54:37They've sort of
- 54:39Ryan: But it's
- 54:39Jon: gooped and melted
- 54:41Kearns: than the body horror stuff, 'cause at that point it's so clearly like, "Oh,
- 54:44Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 54:46Yeah.
- 54:46Yeah
- 54:49Kearns: Yeah
- 54:51Jon: Yeah, yeah.
- 54:52Ryan: body horror?
- 54:53Kearns: I enjoyed the wood chipper in this.
- 54:56Jon: I did too.
- 54:56I mean, uh,
- 54:57Kearns: for the kids, 'cause I
- 54:58Jon: it
- 54:58Kearns: see… They, basically made it hopeless for the rest
- 55:00of the cast throughout this
- 55:01Jon: Yeah.
- 55:02Kearns: saw a way
- 55:03Jon: Y-
- 55:03Kearns: gonna win
- 55:04Jon: yeah.
- 55:04Well, yeah, and, you really get that when Beth plays the records from the
- 55:09end to the beginning to try to figure out how to stop this, and it clearly
- 55:13says, "As long as there's pieces of them, they will keep coming after you."
- 55:20So, wood chipper
- 55:23Kearns: It's like, ugh.
- 55:24And then of course, that didn't work wholly because at the end of the movie
- 55:28we find that guess who's possessed now?
- 55:34Ryan: The
- 55:34Jon: Yep.
- 55:35Ryan: nice blonde lady who goes
- 55:37Jon: I see
- 55:38Ryan: with her friends in the beginning of the film,
- 55:42Jon: Yes, that's,
- 55:43Ryan: you
- 55:43Jon: that is Jessica from the beginning
- 55:48Ryan: I, I like that change though, because like usually you get the opening
- 55:51of a, any Evil Dead film where like right into the book, right into the
- 55:56Deadites, and yeah, you get that in the beginning, but it's like for the viewer.
- 56:01It's like different.
- 56:03Like, okay, you get the
- 56:04Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 56:04Ryan: stuff, but
- 56:05Jon: Mm.
- 56:06Ryan: Why is she possessed?
- 56:08Like, what's going on?
- 56:10And then it builds up from there.
- 56:12like
- 56:12Jon: Yeah
- 56:13Ryan: And that scalping scene, that, that was, I think, yeah,
- 56:18that was, yeah, that was the worst
- 56:20Kearns: I've become so squeamish in my older age.
- 56:23Ryan: It, 'cause you see the brain.
- 56:24You see her brain popping from her freaking skull.
- 56:27Kearns: ne- like give you an example, when I watched Hannibal and he takes, um,
- 56:32Ryan: Ray Liotta
- 56:33Kearns: God, yeah, Ray Liotta's skull cap and does the little slicey dice and
- 56:38throws it on the griddle and whatnot, it's like I was like fine with that.
- 56:42I was like, "Oh man, whoa,
- 56:44Ryan: You can tell it's fake though.
- 56:46You can tell it-- I feel like you can.
- 56:49Kearns: it didn't look fake, I would've been cool with it
- 56:50because I was younger and I didn't
- 56:52Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 56:53There,
- 56:53Kearns: about being
- 56:53Jon: there's also,
- 56:54Kearns: things like
- 56:55Jon: there's also a little bit of camp to that scene, whereas the,
- 56:58the scalping in Evil Dead Rise is, you know, pretty straightforward.
- 57:02There's a little bit of that Hannibal campy in there
- 57:08Kearns: Yeah, 'cause he's talking to him like he's like a third grader
- 57:10Jon: All right, so Evil Dead Rise currently has an 85% critic
- 57:14score and a 76% audience score.
- 57:18So it's, you know, pretty positive.
- 57:22we found a five-star, which goes, "Mommy's with the maggots now.
- 57:27That line epitomizes how dark this whole film is.
- 57:32It misses the humor of the Bruce Campbell film, but it's still a solid
- 57:37release." I'm not sure that's a five-star review, but that's a five-star review
- 57:42Ryan: I would put it more, but I don't wanna say my review yet, but
- 57:48it's like couple stars little lower
- 57:53Kearns: I mean, you just said your review.
- 57:54Ryan: No, not
- 57:55Jon: Eh.
- 57:56Ryan: really.
- 57:56Kearns: minus
- 57:57Jon: Ah, we'll see.
- 57:58We'll see
- 57:59Ryan: but it's, you know
- 58:00Jon: and of course there's some one-star reviews.
- 58:02This one star, "The writing felt more focused on ideological messaging than
- 58:09creating believable characters or a compelling plot. Social commentary can
- 58:14absolutely exist in film, but when it becomes overt enough to overshadow the
- 58:20story, it pulls me out completely."
- 58:25And I'm confused as to what movie this man watched.
- 58:28Kearns: what's the social commentary in Evil Dead
- 58:29Jon: The, the only thing, the only thing that resembles any social commentary
- 58:37is Bridget is going to a protest,
- 58:39Ryan: Yeah.
- 58:40Jon: and it's an environmental protest.
- 58:42It's not… It's the least controversial protest you could have.
- 58:46Ryan: like they just want to complain
- 58:47Jon: Her s- her sign is the least controversial sign
- 58:51you can, you could have.
- 58:53You know, make Earth cool again." But I mean, it, this is sort of
- 58:56the problem, is anything that you don't like is too woke, and that's
- 59:00basically where we're getting, is that somehow this Evil Dead movie is woke.
- 59:05Kearns: It is not.
- 59:05And then the,
- 59:06Jon: It's not even a little.
- 59:08Kearns: for sure.
- 59:09It's, I mean, if you do everything that is, is progress or different, then yeah,
- 59:13I guess that does track with some of these
- 59:15Ryan: Oh, it's true.
- 59:17Kearns: yeah.
- 59:18Ryan: Nuance.
- 59:20It's like noir.
- 59:23Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 59:23Kearns: words
- 59:24Jon: then,
- 59:24Kearns: with M.
- 59:27Jon: and then we ha- we have one more one-star review.
- 59:31"Everything about this movie, including the script, dialogue, acting, and
- 59:36directing was bad. Evil Dead Rise is as by the numbers as it gets, and still manages
- 59:45to be bad, even when following a formula."
- 59:50Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 59:51Jon: And again, I, I'm not sure you watched the same movie.
- 59:54It's, I mean
- 59:55Ryan: Some of these reviewers get me scared based on their
- 59:58opinions, 'cause I feel like, like
- 1:00:01Kearns: The
- 1:00:01Ryan: get it
- 1:00:01Kearns: they a say in our society bothers
- 1:00:04Ryan: Well,
- 1:00:04Kearns: yeah, continue
- 1:00:05Ryan: just like, said this, like, in our, like, episodes with the whole thing.
- 1:00:12If you- you're going to film school, you know, you think you have all
- 1:00:16this, like, opinionated and you think this is how a film should be.
- 1:00:20No, a film can be anything.
- 1:00:22Like, even, like, The Room.
- 1:00:25The Room's a horrible movie, but it's a fun watch.
- 1:00:29It does what it does
- 1:00:31Kearns: the most horrible movie
- 1:00:33Ryan: Y-yes
- 1:00:34Kearns: done to be good.
- 1:00:35I think that's what makes it shine.
- 1:00:37Ryan: Yes, but it's like people got the different opinions and that's
- 1:00:41what it is, all different opinions.
- 1:00:42When these reviews I feel like are just shooting the movie down, where
- 1:00:47yeah, like you can be truthful of it and there is negativity, but
- 1:00:51there's positivity too within it
- 1:00:54Jon: Yeah, I mean, the whole one-star concept is kind of foreign to me.
- 1:00:59I don't know that I have a single movie that I would ma- rate as one star
- 1:01:07Ryan: Jump in, Robin
- 1:01:07Jon: I'm not, uh, uh, n- not even that
- 1:01:10Kearns: out there for me and Robin.
- 1:01:12Jon: N- not, not, not even that for me because it, 'cause it's goofy and
- 1:01:16stupid and you, like, you, if you watch it in the right circumstances,
- 1:01:20it's, you can have fun watching that.
- 1:01:22It's not good.
- 1:01:25Kearns: mescaline.
- 1:01:25If
- 1:01:28Jon: Yeah.
- 1:01:29Kearns: you
- 1:01:29Ryan: Ooh.
- 1:01:30Jon: Maybe,
- 1:01:31Kearns: it under
- 1:01:31Jon: maybe.
- 1:01:31Kearns: circumstance, you know what I mean?
- 1:01:33Jon: Yeah.
- 1:01:34Kearns: yeah.
- 1:01:35Jon: The right circumstance, the right people, the right whatever.
- 1:01:37Like, you can have a… The, I'm, I'm tr- I wouldn't give, uh, The
- 1:01:42Room's not a one star for me.
- 1:01:44I love The Room.
- 1:01:45I love that stupid movie
- 1:01:47Kearns: Is that it for reviews or we have more?
- 1:01:49Jon: Well, that's, that's it for our reviews.
- 1:01:51What about you guys?
- 1:01:52Kearns: Well, we already know Ryan, so might as well start with you
- 1:01:55Ryan: Well, uh, it's, it's a 3.5.
- 1:01:57It's a 3.5 star, and the reason why is 'cause it doesn't does a
- 1:02:03nice homage to what in the past, but it doesn't reach that level.
- 1:02:09It's not Bruce Campbell.
- 1:02:10It's not Sam Raimi.
- 1:02:12I think of Evil Dead, I think of Ash, I think of Raimi, I think of
- 1:02:18this, the craziness, the zaniness, like, the laughs and the scares.
- 1:02:24This movie did a great job of scaring the crap out of me, it does
- 1:02:28have that cover of an Evil Dead.
- 1:02:30You see it throughout its veins.
- 1:02:33It just went straight horror.
- 1:02:36And compared to the 2013 version, I think they did a better, adaptation this time
- 1:02:43around than they did of that because I feel like this one brought a resurgence
- 1:02:47back to the franchise, the 2013 one kinda, like, started rumblings and then it just
- 1:02:54dropped dead because it was too dark
- 1:02:59Kearns: Okay.
- 1:02:59Jon: Okay
- 1:03:00Kearns: I added a lower number, initially, and then I take into account just
- 1:03:04how much effort they put into making it scary, and it is a scary movie.
- 1:03:09so I gave it a three, solid three just for that reason alone.
- 1:03:13I don't try… I try not to let bias come in for my love of the original
- 1:03:16trilogy and things like that.
- 1:03:18I know what they were trying to do.
- 1:03:19I know what they pulled off and what they didn't.
- 1:03:22I just think it's a solid three all around
- 1:03:24Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:03:26And I'm gonna wind up right in between you guys.
- 1:03:29I'm, I'm going 3.25.
- 1:03:31Ryan: aren't
- 1:03:32Jon: And we're… Yeah.
- 1:03:34Uh, let me fluff them.
- 1:03:35Um
- 1:03:38They, like, there are things that I find to be very effective.
- 1:03:43There's some good scares in here, the makeup, the effects work.
- 1:03:49But again, like, you s- like, I, I go back to, my feelings about
- 1:03:54the Dawn of the Dead remake.
- 1:03:55It's the same with this.
- 1:03:56This i- to m- this isn't my Evil Dead.
- 1:04:00if you love those movies, if you love the remake of Dawn of the Dead, that's fine.
- 1:04:04It's not my Dawn of the Dead.
- 1:04:06If you love Evil Dead Rise, good.
- 1:04:09I'm glad, like, I'm glad people are finding things they like in horror.
- 1:04:15It, you know, Evil Dead Rise is fine.
- 1:04:18It's a serviceable movie for me.
- 1:04:20It's not anything more, though
- 1:04:23Kearns: Fair enough.
- 1:04:24there you have it, everybody.
- 1:04:25That's Evil Dead Rise.
- 1:04:26We're gonna get into our top fives right now.
- 1:04:28Ryan: Yeah, we are.
- 1:04:29And I'm flipping it
- 1:04:31Jon: Right meow
- 1:04:32Ryan: meow.
- 1:04:33Did anyone say
- 1:04:34Jon: Don't, don't, don't f- don't flip anything up.
- 1:04:39Ryan: What do you
- 1:04:39Jon: Just do your top five.
- 1:04:40Nothing flipped up, sir.
- 1:04:42Ryan: But I'm changing it up
- 1:04:44Jon: flip that back down.
- 1:04:45Ryan: I'm changing it up a little
- 1:04:46Jon: Flip that back down.
- 1:04:48Ryan: It's,
- 1:04:49Jon: Nope.
- 1:04:49Nope.
- 1:04:50Nah.
- 1:04:52Top five
- 1:04:53Kearns: Oh, boy
- 1:04:53Ryan: I'm going top five, worst from best, I'm ranking Evil Dead movies tonight.
- 1:04:59Kearns: Okay
- 1:05:00Ryan: The- and we're starting off with the worst.
- 1:05:03That's Evil Dead 2013.
- 1:05:05That's why I keep bringing it up.
- 1:05:07and sat in theaters, was very hopeful.
- 1:05:10I was like, "All right, this is Evil Dead. Let's rock it. They're gonna bring the
- 1:05:14series back." And it doesn't hit the mark.
- 1:05:18I feel like they went too dark.
- 1:05:20I get similar premise to the first one.
- 1:05:23It's supposed to be a remake, it's just too dark, and you miss that point
- 1:05:28Jon: Yeah.
- 1:05:28Ryan: Dead is.
- 1:05:29Like, even though the original one is dark, still have, like, lighter moments
- 1:05:34in there, and I think that's because of the practical effects and that
- 1:05:36it's also college students filming it.
- 1:05:40They're having a
- 1:05:40Jon: And they,
- 1:05:41Ryan: it, and you see it
- 1:05:42Jon: they, they offed a dog
- 1:05:45Ryan: Yeah,
- 1:05:45Jon: in 2013.
- 1:05:47Like, the, the automatic, automatic points, point deduction.
- 1:05:52Ryan: That was
- 1:05:52Jon: Mm-hmm
- 1:05:53Ryan: Imagine sitting in the theater and that happens and everyone just goes hush.
- 1:05:57And like,
- 1:05:58Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:05:59Ryan: we have like another 50, 40 minutes left of the film."
- 1:06:02Jon: Yeah, like it's not near the end.
- 1:06:05Ryan: it's right at the
- 1:06:05Jon: You know, there's still a ways to go
- 1:06:08Ryan: Uh, it, I mean, yeah, cool scenes.
- 1:06:10I love the, the raining blood.
- 1:06:12But other than that, the worst.
- 1:06:14And that goes to number four.
- 1:06:16We talked about it tonight.
- 1:06:17That's Evil Dead Rise.
- 1:06:19It's right there at the number four.
- 1:06:20I, I can't, you know, maybe it'll stay.
- 1:06:23It's never gonna go up.
- 1:06:25I wanna see Burn before I can make an assumption on that,
- 1:06:28Which goes to number three.
- 1:06:30That's the original Evil Dead.
- 1:06:32It's right in the middle because it started it, but it was kinda getting
- 1:06:35its grou- that groundwork, you know?
- 1:06:38It was the beginning and you can see it developing.
- 1:06:41And that goes to number two, where I feel is the real start of the Evil
- 1:06:46Dead of, as we know it, and that's Evil Dead II, original requel.
- 1:06:51'Cause yeah, it starts off right at the end of the first one, but they
- 1:06:55retcon the first one because of legal rights and all that with Sam
- 1:06:59Raimi and not owning the first one.
- 1:07:02So the best thing he did is do a requel, and it leads to one of
- 1:07:06the best Evil Dead movies of all time, and that's Army of Darkness.
- 1:07:11Hail to the king, baby.
- 1:07:12Boom stick, chainsaws.
- 1:07:14Kearns: I have the best one for catchphrases
- 1:07:16Ryan: Oh, God.
- 1:07:16I, you know, as a kid, like my uncle would tell me, "If you have to watch
- 1:07:21any of the Evil Deads, just start with Army of Darkness." And that would…
- 1:07:25Kearns: still
- 1:07:27Ryan: It's so good.
- 1:07:28And that's like kinda like is the movie that really, definitely like Evil Dead
- 1:07:33starts it, Evil Dead II picks up steam, and then Army of Darkness makes it a
- 1:07:38sensation to what we know it is today
- 1:07:41Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:07:44Kearns: Fair
- 1:07:45Ryan: So, so that
- 1:07:46Jon: Yeah.
- 1:07:47Kearns: Right
- 1:07:47Jon: Yeah
- 1:07:48Kearns: All right.
- 1:07:49Cool, cool concept for the top five too.
- 1:07:51Ryan: See?
- 1:07:51Kearns: to best.
- 1:07:52Ryan: You guys liked it
- 1:07:53Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:07:53Kearns: We did.
- 1:07:54I loved how long it took you too.
- 1:07:56It was like your fastest top five ever.
- 1:07:58Ryan: prepared.
- 1:07:59Kearns: part.
- 1:07:59Nice.
- 1:08:00Jon: me plenty of room to spread out.
- 1:08:02Kearns: All right,
- 1:08:03Ryan: Go John
- 1:08:04Kearns: what you're gonna
- 1:08:04Jon: Ah.
- 1:08:06All right.
- 1:08:07So I went with top five, or five other evil books in horror movies.
- 1:08:15Kearns: Nice
- 1:08:16Jon: Necronomicon makes a lot of appearances on this list anyway, but,
- 1:08:21um, so my number five is the movie Evil Speak, and the book is the Libro
- 1:08:26Mortis, which is the Book of the Dead.
- 1:08:29Um, so a bullied military school cadet, played by the superior Howard, Clint,
- 1:08:37Kearns: Hmm.
- 1:08:37Jon: stumbles upon a way to make his tormentors pay.
- 1:08:41He has found the Book of the Dead, which used to belong to the evil Father Esteban.
- 1:08:47Um, so he uses the book and his computer to conjure Satan and take his revenge
- 1:08:55Kearns: I just have to plug the other Howard real quick, Cinderella Man.
- 1:08:58I watched it again the other day, and oh my God, what a masterpiece that movie is.
- 1:09:02Ron Howard-directed masterpiece.
- 1:09:05So
- 1:09:05Jon: No, Ron,
- 1:09:06Kearns: a nod
- 1:09:07Jon: Ron Howard has made a lot of good movies.
- 1:09:09I like…
- 1:09:09Ryan: yes.
- 1:09:10Jon: there's something about Clint.
- 1:09:11Clint is m- Clint is my guy
- 1:09:13Ryan: The ice cream man
- 1:09:16Jon: Ice cream man ticks
- 1:09:19Kearns: Yeah, Clint's been in a lot of great
- 1:09:21Ryan: Seinfeld.
- 1:09:23Kearns: Adam Sandler movies too.
- 1:09:24Jon: Mm-hmm
- 1:09:25Ryan: yeah
- 1:09:25Kearns: your, what's your four or your next one?
- 1:09:28Jon: my number four, we're gonna go to the Necronomicon, and it appears
- 1:09:32in Night of the Demons Part II.
- 1:09:36Ryan: Ooh.
- 1:09:37Jon: Yeah.
- 1:09:38Ryan: the
- 1:09:38Jon: Six years after the horror… Oh, I'm gonna tell you.
- 1:09:42Six years after the horrors of Hull House, Angela's body
- 1:09:46has still not been recovered.
- 1:09:48Her sister, Mouse, is invited to a party at the house
- 1:09:52because kids just never learn.
- 1:09:55Um, the others try to prank her by reading from the book, and instead they awake a
- 1:10:01very angry Angela, um, dooming most of the teen partygoers and repeating history
- 1:10:13Kearns: Fair enough.
- 1:10:14I like that one.
- 1:10:15Forgot that it's in that movie
- 1:10:18Jon: Oh, shoot.
- 1:10:19We gotta do a little cutting in here because I meant to ask
- 1:10:22you how to pronounce something.
- 1:10:25E-I-B-O-N
- 1:10:28Ryan: E-I-B-O-N.
- 1:10:30Ebon?
- 1:10:30iPod?
- 1:10:30Ebon.
- 1:10:31Jon: IBAN,
- 1:10:32Ryan: Ebon.
- 1:10:32Jon: IBAN,
- 1:10:33Kearns: yeah,
- 1:10:33Jon: IBAN.
- 1:10:34Okay
- 1:10:35Kearns: I would do it
- 1:10:35Ryan: Ibond
- 1:10:41Kearns: Are you waiting for me to look it up?
- 1:10:43Jon: I mean, I'm, I am too
- 1:10:44Kearns: is both pronunciations seem to work.
- 1:10:47It says Ibon rhymes with tie on, so Ibon or Ebon, which is exactly what we said.
- 1:10:53Ryan: What's the,
- 1:10:54Kearns: nice.
- 1:10:55Ryan: what's the background of the movie?
- 1:10:57Kearns: gonna, you're gonna
- 1:10:58Jon: You're about to get it
- 1:10:59Kearns: here,
- 1:10:59Ryan: then that would get you your pronunciation
- 1:11:01Kearns: question.
- 1:11:04Jon: So we're going Eibon or Ebon?
- 1:11:07Eibon?
- 1:11:07Kearns: I
- 1:11:08Ryan: I, I bought, you bought?
- 1:11:09Jon: Ebon?
- 1:11:10Kearns: whole life
- 1:11:10Jon: Ebon.
- 1:11:11That, that's how I've always read it, but I wanted to make sure.
- 1:11:14I don't do well with pronunciation of words like that.
- 1:11:16Okay,
- 1:11:17Kearns: That's
- 1:11:18Jon: back to list.
- 1:11:20So my number three is gonna be the rare appearance of an Italian horror movie,
- 1:11:26and it's The Beyond, and the Book of Eibon is the evil book in this one.
- 1:11:32Um, so this is the second movie in Lucio Fulci's Gates of Hell
- 1:11:37trilogy, and in this one, a woman inherits a Louisiana hotel where many
- 1:11:43supernatural accidents have occurred.
- 1:11:46Unfortunately for her, the hotel sits atop one of the gates to hell,
- 1:11:51which had been opened previously by the reading of the Book of Eibon
- 1:11:57Kearns: Um, and Book of Eibon goes all the way back to Lovecraft.
- 1:12:02I forget which story though
- 1:12:04Ryan: So I do have a
- 1:12:05Jon: I do.
- 1:12:06And
- 1:12:06Kearns: What's your question?
- 1:12:07Ryan: How is it connected to Hou-- I'm reading it real quick.
- 1:12:10How is it connected to House of the Cemetery?
- 1:12:12'Cause I love that film.
- 1:12:14Like, how is it, like,
- 1:12:15Jon: I,
- 1:12:15Ryan: just the theme?
- 1:12:16Like when
- 1:12:17Jon: it's, it's,
- 1:12:18Ryan: his
- 1:12:18Jon: it's thematically, it, it's more thematic than direct
- 1:12:25Ryan: Fucci's good.
- 1:12:26He's really good.
- 1:12:27He's a
- 1:12:27Jon: Yeah, I like Fulci.
- 1:12:28He's a, he d- he's got a lot of… Yep.
- 1:12:32Um, so my number two, we go back to the Necronomicon Ex-Mortis, and it's a
- 1:12:39movie that's actually come up tonight.
- 1:12:41Ryan: Jason
- 1:12:42Jon: two is Jason Goes to Hell.
- 1:12:44Ryan: Yes
- 1:12:46Jon: so Jason returns this time 100% more occult than the previous eight movies.
- 1:12:54Ryan: Possession
- 1:12:54Jon: now th- now the spirit of Jason can jump bodies and needs to find a member
- 1:13:00of his bloodline to be fully resurrected.
- 1:13:04And of course, the Necronomicon is required, so it's an
- 1:13:09Evil Dead movie, right?
- 1:13:10Ryan: There's a connection.
- 1:13:11There's a rumor.
- 1:13:13There is a rumor with this that Jason is actually a Deadite.
- 1:13:17Because you
- 1:13:18Jon: Yeah.
- 1:13:19I mean
- 1:13:20Ryan: how does he tr- like, his heart, he's gotta move his heart get and,
- 1:13:25like, put inside the person through the
- 1:13:27Jon: You're trying to make, you're trying to make sense of Jason Goes to Hell.
- 1:13:31Ryan: Jason, it's Evil Dead
- 1:13:33Jon: Ja- Jason Goes to Hell also sets up the Freddy and Jason crossover as
- 1:13:38at the end it's a very Freddy-esque bladed glove that pulls Jason to hell
- 1:13:45Ryan: Oh, that wa- that was 100% Freddy's glove.
- 1:13:48But do you know who
- 1:13:49Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:13:49Ryan: the glove?
- 1:13:51Jon: No.
- 1:13:51Ryan: Kane Hodder
- 1:13:54Jon: Okay.
- 1:13:55Ryan: Keanu
- 1:13:56Jon: Interesting.
- 1:13:58Mm-hmm
- 1:14:00Kearns: Technically
- 1:14:02Jon: listen, there's no bigger sin in Freddy versus Jason than Jason is not Kane
- 1:14:07Hodder, but that's a topic for another time because we have to go to number one.
- 1:14:12And my number one, my number one is a twofer.
- 1:14:16It- the first one is 1932, the second one is 1999, and it's The Mummy, The
- 1:14:25Book of Thoth, and The Book of the Dead.
- 1:14:28In both 1932 and 1999, a book sets in motion the return of a vicious mummy,
- 1:14:36Imhotep, set on reconnecting with his lost love and destroying anyone in his way.
- 1:14:43Whether it's Boris Karloff as a mummy or Brendan Fraser as an
- 1:14:47American leading an expedition, you can't go wrong with The Mummy
- 1:14:51Ryan: I am so happy you mentioned the 1932 one, 'cause the '32
- 1:14:57one doesn't get as much flowers.
- 1:14:58I feel the '99 one takes it over because it's more adventure and it does the
- 1:15:04story of, I think, a little bit better.
- 1:15:06But the
- 1:15:07Kearns: Uh, uh, I mean, so many people of our age group loved the '90s one,
- 1:15:11Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:15:12Ryan: of course.
- 1:15:13Jon: I mean, the nine
- 1:15:16Ryan: you gotta have the '30s one, and then even the Hammer
- 1:15:19one, which is a remake of it too
- 1:15:22Jon: But, but listen, this, it is kind of a, a losing battle with movies like that.
- 1:15:28They're gonna get forgotten.
- 1:15:29They're gonna get underrated because
- 1:15:31Ryan: Yeah
- 1:15:33Jon: who saw, who saw The Mum- the first Mummy in theaters?
- 1:15:39Ryan: Oh.
- 1:15:39Oh, 99
- 1:15:42Jon: No, the 1932.
- 1:15:44Who saw that in theaters?
- 1:15:46Ryan: Definitely
- 1:15:46Jon: can still talk about it?
- 1:15:48Kearns: Yeah
- 1:15:49Jon: The people who s- who, the people who saw it in theaters,
- 1:15:52the youngest is nearing 100
- 1:15:57Kearns: Yeah, fair.
- 1:15:58Jon: Eh.
- 1:15:59So those things just get forgotten because you didn't experience,
- 1:16:02experience it firsthand.
- 1:16:04We've all experienced 1999 Mummy
- 1:16:07Ryan: Yes.
- 1:16:08Kearns: As with
- 1:16:09Ryan: Hopefully
- 1:16:09Kearns: produce other successors and stuff like that, people included, eventually
- 1:16:14the things that you leave behind or the thing that makes you special is
- 1:16:18seen in those other works later on.
- 1:16:21So whatever comes out in 20, you know, 205 that's inspired by The Mummy from
- 1:16:271999, which took its inspiration partially from The Mummy from 1932 or whatever it
- 1:16:33was, like you have to keep that in mind 'cause eventually all things lead there
- 1:16:38Ryan: But we do have a positive though, because…
- 1:16:41Kearns: that was positive
- 1:16:42Ryan: Well, no, even more to add to your positive is Gen Z is getting
- 1:16:47more into physical copies and a lot of older movies, and they wanna experience
- 1:16:52the past more, and they want to, like for people who love film, they wanna
- 1:16:57see what's the big buildup of it.
- 1:16:59So they're going through the history of film and watching film, and they're
- 1:17:03enjoying the older films more than what they're seeing today, and that's
- 1:17:06a big positive to add to that positive.
- 1:17:09Builds off of it
- 1:17:11Jon: I mean, we've, we've talked about it before, some of the
- 1:17:12challenges this generation is gonna have with older movies.
- 1:17:12The, you
- 1:17:18know, the beats are different.
- 1:17:21You know, you, why, you, you know, it used to be you'd get the action scene
- 1:17:26and then, like, 10 to 15 minutes of, you know, plot, and then the big action scene.
- 1:17:32Now that, that's getting compressed 'cause that's the, where the attention spans
- 1:17:37are, and you need to keep that together.
- 1:17:38We're, you know, right now we're a, a very TikTok society
- 1:17:45Kearns: Pressing.
- 1:17:45All right, this is gonna wrap up the episode for tonight, everybody.
- 1:17:49TikTok, bad.
- 1:17:51Evil Dead Rise, good?
- 1:17:54Ryan: It's fifty-fifty
- 1:17:55Kearns: Yeah, we'll go
- 1:17:56Jon: Evil De- Evil Dead Rise is okay
- 1:17:59Kearns: All right.
- 1:18:00that's it for us tonight, everybody.
- 1:18:01We'll see you next week
- 1:18:03Ryan: All right, have a good one, guys.
- 1:18:06Jon: The year
