SPEAKER_03: Or I'm uh born and raised in New Jersey.

SPEAKER_03: Uh I got out here to the desert in uh April of 2022.

SPEAKER_03: Okay, so yeah, relatively a desert uh transplant, but I feel like a desert rat now because the heat, yeah anything under 70, I'm freezing.

SPEAKER_03: So if I tell people that at home, they're like, grow up.

SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, you're certified now, man.

SPEAKER_05: So how did you get involved in like journalism?

SPEAKER_03: Like, yeah, so I uh it sounds cliche, but you know the story of a kid sitting there with the TV on mute and you're doing the play-by-play as a little kid and uh big baseball guy and hockey guy, and uh I just always wanted to be in it.

SPEAKER_03: And believe it or not, I didn't have the the guts to do it out of high school.

SPEAKER_03: I I ended up getting a teaching degree, went that route uh after high school, and then I realized I was 24, 23, 24.

SPEAKER_03: So, you know what, man, I gotta already have the degree, let me just go back and do an accelerated program.

SPEAKER_03: So I went back, did an accelerated program for journalism, and uh here I am.

SPEAKER_03: Right in, huh?

SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we we uh you know I did six, seven years behind the scenes.

SPEAKER_03: I was a producer, and uh what I do with the firebirds, I did at Madison Square Garden for six years.

SPEAKER_03: Oh, Knicks and the Rangers.

SPEAKER_03: Wow, okay.

SPEAKER_03: But at that age, I I needed, I wanted to be on air, I want to be on TV, and that wasn't happening at you know your mid-20s in New York City, the number one market.

SPEAKER_03: So I had to take a step back, go west.

SPEAKER_03: I got my first TV gig in West Texas, uh middle of nowhere, one traffic light town.

SPEAKER_03: Like it was you want to talk about culture shock, but the high school football in West Texas, unbelievable.

SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's like 15,000 people on a Friday night, town shuts down at noon, and they're tailgating down the whole dirt stretch road, getting to the stadium.

SPEAKER_03: So uh I was there for four years, and then now I'm out here in uh in the Cochell Valley.

SPEAKER_03: Wow, it's awesome.

SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's that's we're glad you're here.

SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's uh it's you know, I it and you guys get this.

SPEAKER_03: It it is it's unbelievable.

SPEAKER_03: I mean, this is a place I would stay forever.

SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, it still has that little bit of a smaller market feel, so I'm still looking for that that big payday out here, which I don't know if that'll come in this market, but I I can tell you confidently I would stay here for the rest of my life.

SPEAKER_03: Yeah, so I don't mind the heat one bit.

SPEAKER_05: Once you get used to the heat, it's just nine months of great weather other than the heat.

SPEAKER_02: Obviously, we're a football show, but you know, you're you're a man amongst town, you you know the sports scene inside and out.

SPEAKER_02: Kind of, you know, tell us the evolution that you've seen in the Coachella Valley on the sports scene.

SPEAKER_02: I mean, it's it's changed quite a bit since you've got here, correct?

SPEAKER_03: Yeah, for sure.

SPEAKER_03: And I tell people this, not lip service.

SPEAKER_03: I don't know it because the mic's on, and and I've been on the record saying this before.

SPEAKER_03: I truly think seeing there's a picture of me in a hard hat and a vest with dirt on the ground and no ceiling in the middle of the across your ring.

SPEAKER_03: We've literally seen it from the ground up.

SPEAKER_03: That seeing the Coachella Valley Firebirds evolve and grow to what they are today has been the highlight of my career.

SPEAKER_03: And then you see it, they play well, they get to the finals, and then the next day they go to the finals again, you're just seeing it, right?

SPEAKER_03: And you can't go anywhere without seeing a yard sign or a license plate or a flag holder, or you know, so um to see it grow to what it is today has been unbelievable.

SPEAKER_03: Uh and it's only getting bigger and better at Actorshire Arena.

SPEAKER_03: The more acts are coming, the the college basketball scene, right?

SPEAKER_03: Duke, Michigan State are coming out here.

SPEAKER_05: You go to one hockey game and you see the energy in that arena and how close those games are, and it really feels like, man, if you just cheer, they they they hear it and they they execute even better, and it makes sense when you go to the game.

SPEAKER_03: It's um it's the best sport live, in my opinion.

SPEAKER_03: Just the speed, the action, very few stoppages.

SPEAKER_03: And and truthfully, I think when you look at the team as a whole, it's the valley's team, right?

SPEAKER_03: The valley doesn't really had a team that they can call their own.

SPEAKER_03: Now, the Palm Springs Power have unbelievable success.

SPEAKER_03: Starkey, I don't know if you guys know Andrew Starkey over there, runs their program, and then their manager, Casey Dill.

SPEAKER_03: They're awesome, they're great guys and they know how to win.

SPEAKER_03: But it's a summer league and it's not you're a full league, not you know, not a at a professional level just yet.

SPEAKER_03: And the firebirds are that, and it's the valley's team.

SPEAKER_03: You have you know forever friends that you probably wouldn't have met or known had the firebirds not been out here.

SPEAKER_03: And I think now with the Lakers coming, that'll bring a whole nother avenue of fans and friends.

SPEAKER_02: I mean, they see the fan support here for that local team, and I think somebody's like, hey, maybe we can duplicate this with a G-League team, correct?

SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you look at uh the three years the Lakers came out here for the preseason.

SPEAKER_03: Now having LeBron James helps, sure.

SPEAKER_03: Uh playing the Suns had Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, that certainly helps.

SPEAKER_03: But uh the success of the arena, the success of having a sports team here.

SPEAKER_03: Uh, the six first of all, it's the nicest.

SPEAKER_03: I've traveled around other minor league arena.

SPEAKER_03: It's the nicest minor league arena in the country because there's some dumps out there.

SPEAKER_03: So I think all of that ties into the success of what the Valley has done.

SPEAKER_02: I mean, there's gonna be I just want to get a shirt that says Coachella Valley Lakers, man.

SPEAKER_03: I mean, it's it's the Lakers logo, but it's still it's the same color, same basketball, same format, but it says Coachella Valley, and then it has the mountains and palm trees behind the basketball.

SPEAKER_03: And I think uh you look at the G League used to just be developmental, and it was a D Remember it was the D League for a little bit?

SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it was developmental league, and you never saw anybody worth anything, but now they're using it as rehab too.

SPEAKER_03: Like, you know, you hope he doesn't get hurt, but there's a really good chance you'll see Luca play a game or two if he does get hurt and have a rehab assignment because it's right down the street.

SPEAKER_03: Yeah, um, I think more having more teams make the playoffs certainly helps for all of us involved, more games to cover, longer seasons, more content.

SPEAKER_03: Yeah and you look at some of these teams, and and I know when you look at a record and you see they're four and eight, you're like, man, that stinks.

SPEAKER_03: But then you go up to that first round of the playoffs and you're you're never gonna compete with some of these other San Bernardinos and LAs and San Diego.

SPEAKER_02: And I was like thinking, I was looking at that film, going, there's no way this defense could cover an offense today because the way they spread it out and the way the athletes get in space.

SPEAKER_03: I think Xavier, you know, he he was successful and and I'd like Doc as a person, so that's certainly something I'm gonna be keeping a close eye on.

SPEAKER_03: I don't know the stories, the ins and outs of it, but I'm sure it was didn't end the way he had wanted.

SPEAKER_03: And um to get another opportunity, but in a public school on a on a program that's been down for since I've been here.
