- 0:54Speaker 1: attracting a quote soft buyers market ESPN Seth Wickersham reports
- 0:59Speaker 1: this morning. Of course, Yesterday, we had news that the
- 1:02Speaker 1: two first legit bidders groups are emerging, competing against each
- 1:08Speaker 1: other to perhaps drive up the price. We'll talk more
- 1:10Speaker 1: about this in a second as well. The Seahawks as
- 1:13Speaker 1: players began the second phase of their voluntary offseason workout
- 1:16Speaker 1: program this week at headquarters in Renton. The team posts
- 1:20Speaker 1: a photo from the field yesterday of Tory Horton catching
- 1:22Speaker 1: a football. His rookie season ended last November with a
- 1:25Speaker 1: major shin injury, which Mike McDonald has said. Horton likely
- 1:28Speaker 1: wouldn't do much football work in the field this spring,
- 1:31Speaker 1: but the team is hopeful the wide receiver and kick
- 1:33Speaker 1: returner will be ready for training camp the end of July,
- 1:36Speaker 1: and yesterday him on the field catching passes was a
- 1:38Speaker 1: good sign of that. Ninety eight point seven M Sports

- 1:58Speaker 1: Referees Association that'll run through the twenty thirty two season.
- 2:02Speaker 1: The current CBA expired at the end of this month,
- 2:04Speaker 1: so we won't have college Division three refs doing NFL games,
- 2:07Speaker 1: which is what they were floating. The specter of the
- 2:10Speaker 1: Sounders Tomorrow host San Diego at the Stadium in Soto
- 2:13Speaker 1: seven thirty right ere on ninety three point three KJRFM.
- 2:17Speaker 1: The thirtieth WNBA season begins today. The Storm has their

- 3:00Speaker 1: game to start the playoffs four and one in Philadelphia,
- 3:03Speaker 1: four to one. If the Hurricanes win tomorrow night Game
- 3:07Speaker 1: four were to sweep the Flyers out of the playoffs,
- 3:09Speaker 1: Carolina will become the first team ever to begin the
- 3:12Speaker 1: Stanley Cup playoffs eight and No. They're trying to advance
- 3:14Speaker 1: to the Eastern Conference Finals. And here we go with
- 3:17Speaker 1: the Friday Show in Travis Monger.
- 3:42Speaker 3: Listen, but I guess the storm.
- 3:50Speaker 4: Because I know the story.
- 3:53Speaker 5: Maybe win your brook, Ma, that I can do my day.
- 3:58Speaker 4: I'm sure you that I'm wid that I loved you.
- 4:23Speaker 1: Good morning, Happy Friday to you, Travismonga and I Travis
- 4:27Speaker 1: is in for Christopher kid.
- 4:29Speaker 2: Chris is flying across the country.
- 4:31Speaker 1: He's going to Xavier University in Louisiana to see his
- 4:34Speaker 1: little sister graduate from college. Oh hi, Travis, Hey, Greg,
- 4:37Speaker 1: how are you good? Wild Things? I feel like it's
- 4:40Speaker 1: Super Bowl Week again or something. We did a couple
- 4:41Speaker 1: of shows super Bowl Week.
- 4:43Speaker 2: I know.
- 4:43Speaker 5: I just want to point out the fact that we
- 4:45Speaker 5: called that super Bowl.
- 4:46Speaker 2: Yes we did.
- 4:47Speaker 5: We were a spot on. Yes we did humble brag there.
- 4:51Speaker 1: Yeah, thank you, Travis. We said boat race and it
- 4:53Speaker 1: was the greatest race of boats. On February eighth and
- 4:56Speaker 1: Santa Clara Travis n I did a couple of postseason
- 4:59Speaker 1: shows together, both here and then when I was in
- 5:01Speaker 1: San Francisco on Friday nights.
- 5:03Speaker 2: And he's right.
- 5:05Speaker 1: We said, here's after they're gonna kill him. And we
- 5:08Speaker 1: got that five that whole week. And having been around
- 5:11Speaker 1: the team, and yeah, it wasn't twenty nine thirteen. It
- 5:14Speaker 1: wasn't that close, was it that? That was a pretty
- 5:17Speaker 1: well upsided super Bowl. The champs are back on the field,
- 5:21Speaker 1: some of them anyway. Leonard Williams posted a video of
- 5:24Speaker 1: him in a golf cart out on the golf course
- 5:26Speaker 1: enjoying his offseason. It's voluntary, still the second phase of
- 5:30Speaker 1: offseason workouts, but Mike McDonald, the coach, has been very
- 5:33Speaker 1: pleased with who is there, Sam Darnold, Jackson Smith and
- 5:36Speaker 1: jigber newly minted one hundred and sixty eight million dollars
- 5:39Speaker 1: wide receiver Jackson Smith and Jigger Cooper Cup. In his
- 5:42Speaker 1: early mid thirties, Devin Witherspoon was about to get a
- 5:47Speaker 1: massive deal of three time cornerback. There are team leaders
- 5:51Speaker 1: on the field for what Mike McDonald doesn't say, they
- 5:54Speaker 1: have to be here for and they were there anyway
- 5:55Speaker 1: setting an example for the younger players. And that's not typical, right,
- 5:59Speaker 1: it's not, And especially now after a Super Bowl, with
- 6:04Speaker 1: the shorter off season and the guys celebrating through the
- 6:06Speaker 1: end of February. And to your point, Travis, Mike mc
- 6:11Speaker 1: donald told him the first phase for the last two
- 6:14Speaker 1: weeks of April, don't come just take it off. I
- 6:17Speaker 1: get it. It was a long season. Take it and Sam,
- 6:20Speaker 1: Darnold and Witherspoon and Smith, they were all there two
- 6:22Speaker 1: weeks ago and that is the genesis of what started
- 6:27Speaker 1: last season with the togetherness and brotherhood and they ended
- 6:30Speaker 1: up with damn near one hundred percent participation in the
- 6:32Speaker 1: OTAs and veteran Mini camp or excuse me, the voluntary
- 6:37Speaker 1: Mini camp again to recap, there's only one mandatory thing
- 6:41Speaker 1: these players have to go to in the offseason, and
- 6:43Speaker 1: that's the Mini camp three days the first early second
- 6:46Speaker 1: week of June. And then that's it. This week or
- 6:49Speaker 1: this year, this offseason, the Seahawks have one fewer week
- 6:52Speaker 1: of OTA practices organized team activities. They just have two
- 6:56Speaker 1: sets of three of those and then the mini camp
- 6:59Speaker 1: and they're done on June tenth. They're done from June
- 7:03Speaker 1: tenth till July twenty fifth ish. The training camp is
- 7:08Speaker 1: still to be decided to start date they're off, so
- 7:11Speaker 1: it is a shorter offseason, in which McDonald said, Yah,
- 7:13Speaker 1: I don't don't bother coming. And we've talked about this
- 7:17Speaker 1: many times, Travis, that the togetherness and the buy in
- 7:20Speaker 1: that they had in April and May last year they
- 7:22Speaker 1: think was the reason they won the Super Bowl and
- 7:25Speaker 1: it's starting the same way this time as well.
- 7:27Speaker 5: Yeah, you gotta love it.
- 7:28Speaker 6: I mean seeing that kind of dedication and they've got
- 7:31Speaker 6: a taste of winning and they want more.
- 7:34Speaker 5: That's that's great.
- 7:35Speaker 1: It's the culture, Mike McDonald has said. In two short seasons. Yeah,
- 7:38Speaker 1: that's his biggest caauy. Yes, he hoisted trophies and won
- 7:41Speaker 1: Super Bowl, the biggest accomplishment is the culture he's established
- 7:44Speaker 1: in short order and the buy in that he's gotten
- 7:47Speaker 1: from thirty four to thirty three year old veterans like
- 7:50Speaker 1: Jaron Reid who's there as well these two weeks when
- 7:53Speaker 1: he doesn't have to be and Leonard Williams and DeMarcus Lawrence,
- 7:56Speaker 1: who's played twelve NFL seasons and is coming back for
- 7:58Speaker 1: his age.
- 7:58Speaker 2: Thirty four year. Yeah, it will see.
- 8:02Speaker 1: I mean, there have been many stories in the NFL
- 8:04Speaker 1: of fat and happy teams that get paid like Smith
- 8:08Speaker 1: and Jigbin Witherspooner are about to and have tasted success and
- 8:11Speaker 1: fall off because they lose that edge. So far, very
- 8:15Speaker 1: very early on May, there's no evidence of that. In fact,
- 8:17Speaker 1: there's an evidence of a renrule of the kidness inside
- 8:20Speaker 1: the Seahawks locker room.
- 8:21Speaker 2: Happy Mother's Day to everybody out there.
- 8:25Speaker 1: I reminded when I came in today that two years
- 8:28Speaker 1: ago Chris Kidd and I had this show we had.
- 8:32Speaker 1: We called my mom in the suburban Detroit somewhat surprised
- 8:37Speaker 1: her on the Friday before Mother's Day and put her
- 8:39Speaker 1: on the air drives. Well, it took some doing because
- 8:43Speaker 1: even though I told her right before the show, I said, hey, Mom,
- 8:45Speaker 1: I'm going to surprise you and Chris Kid's gonna call you.
- 8:48Speaker 1: It's gonna have a two oh six number, And I
- 8:52Speaker 1: think it ended up being an eight hundred number from
- 8:53Speaker 1: the iHeart switchboard. Yeah, and it completely baffled her, and
- 8:58Speaker 1: she's like, oh, this is a spam tell I'm not
- 9:00Speaker 1: answering this phone. Eighty seven year old mom in Detroit
- 9:03Speaker 1: not answering it. So it just rang and it rang
- 9:06Speaker 1: and it rang, and I'm on the air and Chris
- 9:08Speaker 1: is in the booth where you are, waving his arms
- 9:10Speaker 1: and giving me a signal like, well, I don't know
- 9:11Speaker 1: what's happening. She's not answering the phone. I finally had
- 9:15Speaker 1: to call her. I think I handed the phone to
- 9:17Speaker 1: Chris or something. We patched her in through my phone
- 9:19Speaker 1: because that was the only way she was going to
- 9:20Speaker 1: answer the phone a number she recognized, and then we
- 9:24Speaker 1: had a really cool conversation about that was my mother's
- 9:27Speaker 1: Day highlight. I don't know if you have any good
- 9:29Speaker 1: Mother's Day memories or what you do for Mother's Day or.
- 9:31Speaker 6: I really, I mean, my mom lives in La so
- 9:35Speaker 6: I give her a call, we send her flowers for you,
- 9:38Speaker 6: my wife. I tried to just give her a day off,
- 9:41Speaker 6: you know, mimosa for breakfast, some you know, sweet treats
- 9:47Speaker 6: or bagels or something, and then like I'll take the
- 9:49Speaker 6: kids and you can do whatever you want.
- 9:51Speaker 1: See that means you're married man, you know, oh yeah,
- 9:54Speaker 1: oh yeah, he married for ten years. If you're married
- 9:58Speaker 1: for more than ten days, you get it right, yea.
- 10:00Speaker 1: Get the day off for Mother's Day. Hopefully you have
- 10:02Speaker 1: out there a chance to be near your mother and
- 10:04Speaker 1: you or get in touch with your mother, contact with
- 10:07Speaker 1: your mother, if you're so fortunate. I know some of
- 10:10Speaker 1: us at this age have lost ours. My mother now
- 10:13Speaker 1: two years later, I'm not calling her today in Detroit
- 10:16Speaker 1: because she has said pretty heavy dementia unfortunately, and if
- 10:19Speaker 1: I called her, she would not know who I was.
- 10:20Speaker 1: And actually when I go in and even when I
- 10:23Speaker 1: tell where I'm coming to the memory care facility and
- 10:27Speaker 1: did suburband Detroit, she doesn't remember who I am. And
- 10:29Speaker 1: she thinks some are my father actually, especially when I
- 10:33Speaker 1: drive around when I'm visiting, because she's used to a
- 10:37Speaker 1: man driving her around. And yeah, that's heartbreaking. So hats
- 10:41Speaker 1: off to those of you have gone through that. It's tough.
- 10:46Speaker 1: And I was going to send her flowers, for instance,
- 10:48Speaker 1: and I don't know if I mean it would be
- 10:51Speaker 1: for me more than her.
- 10:52Speaker 6: Yeah, well, I'm sure she would still appreciate having those flowers,
- 10:55Speaker 6: even if she doesn't connect that they came from you.
- 10:57Speaker 5: Yeah, that's true.
- 10:59Speaker 2: I mean see the flowers, because she would not know
- 11:01Speaker 2: who they came from.
- 11:02Speaker 1: But so if you have the opportunity, because you may
- 11:06Speaker 1: never you never know, say hate to mom. I probably
- 11:09Speaker 1: don't have to tell most of you that, but heavy
- 11:11Speaker 1: Mother's date and all the moms out there as well.
- 11:14Speaker 1: The most rewarding, get most difficult job on Earth, raising
- 11:17Speaker 1: children and being a mother huts off to all of you.
- 11:19Speaker 2: On the show today, the Mariners six man rotation. Chuck
- 11:23Speaker 2: Powell the specter of it. I should say it's not
- 11:26Speaker 2: official yet.
- 11:27Speaker 1: Chuck Powell and Ashley Ryan in the last couple hours
- 11:29Speaker 1: talked to Pete Woodworth, the pitching coach for the Mariners
- 11:32Speaker 1: from Chicago. Chuck asked about that. He didn't give exactly
- 11:36Speaker 1: straight answers, but we'll replay what he did say and
- 11:39Speaker 1: we'll discuss now that Bryce Miller is coming back to
- 11:42Speaker 1: the rotation off of his minor league rehab stint from
- 11:45Speaker 1: the oblique side injury.
- 11:47Speaker 2: Where goes Emerson Hancock? He better not go anywhere.
- 11:50Speaker 1: Where's Luis Castile go? With a twenty four million dollar contract?
- 11:54Speaker 1: You're going to put twenty four million dollars in the bullpen.
- 11:56Speaker 1: That three a time all Star. I think they're going
- 11:58Speaker 1: to keep him the showcase in the try to eventually
- 12:00Speaker 1: trade him this summer. We'll talk about that at the
- 12:03Speaker 1: next Tank twenty five at ten forty five. Yesterday we'd
- 12:08Speaker 1: go into a flashback Friday. Make that a regular thing
- 12:11Speaker 1: here on this show. Flashback Friday today, ten forty five.
- 12:15Speaker 1: It's yesterday was an NBA anniversary in this city with
- 12:18Speaker 1: the Sonics. Maybe I shouldn't bring it up, but I will.
- 12:22Speaker 1: Those who've been around the Pacific Northwest for more than
- 12:25Speaker 1: a day might have an idea what I'm talking about.
- 12:28Speaker 1: At eleven o'clock, Gary Hill, Junior, the Mariners broadcaster, is
- 12:31Speaker 1: also in Chicago, getting ready to broadcast from Kimiski Park
- 12:35Speaker 1: tonight the three games say whatever they call Kimiski Park
- 12:37Speaker 1: now loan rate or rate loan or rate stadium, some
- 12:41Speaker 1: kind of garden. Yeah, it's Kimiski Park, the new Kimiski Park,
- 12:45Speaker 1: same building it's always been. Well, he's gonna Gary Hill's
- 12:48Speaker 1: going to join us at eleven o'clock to talk about
- 12:50Speaker 1: this specter of a six man rotation. Talk about Brendan Donovan,
- 12:52Speaker 1: coming back to the Mariners off of Hinge injured list
- 12:56Speaker 1: stint what he sees from the offense as it's starting
- 12:59Speaker 1: to awaken. Kyle Rawleigh o for eight with five strikeouts
- 13:03Speaker 1: since he's returned from the three days that he missed
- 13:07Speaker 1: with his own side issue. We'll talk to Gary Hill Junior,
- 13:09Speaker 1: a good friend of ours, at eleven o'clock eleven thirty,
- 13:12Speaker 1: as we do every day at eleven thirty the Takoma
- 13:14Speaker 1: Dodge texta on four, nine, four or five one.
- 13:16Speaker 2: Your chance to be a part of the show, and.
- 13:18Speaker 1: We'll start off the show with your greatest Mother's Day memory,
- 13:22Speaker 1: maybe your mom, maybe for your mother, as a son
- 13:26Speaker 1: or as a husband, as a great husband as Travis
- 13:29Speaker 1: is now. My kids are at the age of twenty three,
- 13:32Speaker 1: turning twenty three this month, that I leave it on them.
- 13:35Speaker 7: Nice if yeah, I mean I I don't do anything
- 13:39Speaker 7: for my wife for Mother's Day because it's them. And
- 13:41Speaker 7: my wife has said that even when they were in
- 13:44Speaker 7: grade school, Hey, I'm their mom.
- 13:46Speaker 1: Let them may care of it. So now that they're
- 13:49Speaker 1: earning their own incomes, they can come up with something.
- 13:52Speaker 1: We're actually going to work as Imon our son is
- 13:54Speaker 1: this new state Park ranger. We're in state park. Oh cool,
- 13:58Speaker 1: that's his environmental science degree from w ISSUE. And we're
- 14:01Speaker 1: gonna spend the weekend and work as island.
- 14:02Speaker 5: I think you're gonna have great weather.
- 14:04Speaker 2: It sounds like it right, no rain.
- 14:06Speaker 1: We're gonna be in the yurts at Oga Bay and
- 14:10Speaker 1: Otter Bay at what do they call it, dough Doughbay
- 14:14Speaker 1: Dobe uh huh. We couldn't get into even though my
- 14:17Speaker 1: son works there. We couldn't get in camp spots at
- 14:19Speaker 1: Moran's State Park there already sold out here earlier far ahead. Yeah,
- 14:22Speaker 1: so we're gonna We're gonna go to Doughbey and spend
- 14:25Speaker 1: the beach yurt.
- 14:26Speaker 5: I think you can go skinny dipping and like the
- 14:29Speaker 5: hot hubs there.
- 14:30Speaker 1: So oh, if you feel we have a hot reservation,
- 14:33Speaker 1: Thank you, Travis.
- 14:34Speaker 5: So just be you know, be aware you might see
- 14:36Speaker 5: some bits hanging out.
- 14:38Speaker 1: Oh now, my wife definitely needs to go. That's that's
- 14:42Speaker 1: our Mother's day we get. Thanks for the tip. I
- 14:45Speaker 1: didn't know that, you know, just heads up, don't be alarmed,
- 14:48Speaker 1: literally a heads up.
- 14:49Speaker 2: Okay, I like that.
- 14:52Speaker 1: Just coming out checks on the greatest memories and fondest memories.
- 14:56Speaker 1: You have of your mother's days, either for your mother,
- 14:58Speaker 1: for your wife, or your if you are a mother,
- 15:02Speaker 1: share those. I'd love to share those and read them
- 15:04Speaker 1: back at eleven thirty on the text.
- 15:05Speaker 2: Line, Okay, so this Seahawks news.
- 15:08Speaker 1: This morning, Travis about a quote soft market that Seth
- 15:12Speaker 1: Wickersham is reporting.
- 15:14Speaker 2: Let me get a little bit to what he's reported.
- 15:17Speaker 1: It came out an hour or so ago, and it's
- 15:19Speaker 1: a response to yesterday's Sportygo had two articles that's saying
- 15:22Speaker 1: they were really the first two bidders that looked like
- 15:24Speaker 1: they were putting together money offers on the Seahawks. Seth
- 15:29Speaker 1: Wickersham today on ESPN dot com about I don't know,
- 15:33Speaker 1: two or three hours ago. The Seahawks franchise hasn't generated
- 15:38Speaker 1: the interest the NFL hoped for when the estate of
- 15:40Speaker 1: Paul g Allen put up the team for sale in February.
- 15:43Speaker 1: According to an owner, two team executives, and another executive
- 15:47Speaker 1: direct knowledge of the state of the sale, quote it's soft.
- 15:50Speaker 1: The team owners set of the market for the Seahawks.
- 15:53Speaker 1: There isn't much action as there was with Denver in Washington,
- 15:56Speaker 1: another executive said, referring to the two most pass franchise
- 16:00Speaker 1: sales in the league. Sources who spoke to ESPN said
- 16:04Speaker 1: the situation was fluid, but added that there are doubts
- 16:07Speaker 1: among NFL owners and executives about whether the Seahawks sale
- 16:10Speaker 1: after sports business insiders speculated that it would spark a
- 16:13Speaker 1: bidding war and that the franchise could fetch up to
- 16:16Speaker 1: eleven billion.
- 16:17Speaker 2: Yeah, with a B dollars.
- 16:19Speaker 1: Now, there's some doubts whether it'll clipse ten billion at all,
- 16:22Speaker 1: they said. These sources to ESPN believed that the team
- 16:25Speaker 1: will sell for slightly more than nine billion, which would
- 16:28Speaker 1: still be a record price for an NFL team. A
- 16:30Speaker 1: league spokesman declined comment, of course you would. A spokesman
- 16:34Speaker 1: for the Allent of State told ESPN, quote, there is
- 16:36Speaker 1: no news to share about the sale process.
- 16:39Speaker 5: Unquote.
- 16:40Speaker 1: A Seahawks spokesperson deferred to this the State statement. Okay,
- 16:45Speaker 1: so the league and Steahaks are saying the same thing
- 16:47Speaker 1: they said yesterday. There's no news to share because there
- 16:48Speaker 1: are no bids officially in yet and there's no decision made.
- 16:52Speaker 1: Nothing new there. The sale price, if it's nine billion,
- 16:57Speaker 1: I mean nine billion, ten billion, ten billion is a
- 16:59Speaker 1: nice number because it would equal the Lakers sale in
- 17:02Speaker 1: the NBA, which for the richest sale of the professional
- 17:04Speaker 1: sports franchise in North America history. But if it's nine
- 17:08Speaker 1: million or ten billion, it's still going to be higher
- 17:12Speaker 1: than the highest sale price ever for an NFL team,
- 17:14Speaker 1: which is six point oh five billion to the Washington
- 17:16Speaker 1: Commanders a couple of years ago.
- 17:18Speaker 2: Josh Harris and a group of investors bought the team
- 17:21Speaker 2: for that.
- 17:21Speaker 1: Before that, the Denver sale at the ESPN's talking about,
- 17:24Speaker 1: the Broncos were bought by the heir of the Walmart
- 17:28Speaker 1: financial tycoon, Walmart Guy. But Walton is a long line
- 17:33Speaker 1: of Walton's that run Walmart, So what's called Walmart and
- 17:36Speaker 1: that's sold for a little over four billion dollars. The NFL,
- 17:40Speaker 1: their main goal is to make sure franchise valuations and
- 17:43Speaker 1: sales go up each time a franchise gets sold METEA
- 17:47Speaker 1: rights deals, the fact the league prints money they want
- 17:51Speaker 1: whether the economy is soft or higher, where the raging
- 17:54Speaker 1: markets or not. They want to make sure that the
- 17:56Speaker 1: owners have an incentive if they want to sell to
- 18:00Speaker 1: to the highest bidder and raise the evaluations for all
- 18:02Speaker 1: the teams. So even at nine billion, the Seahawks sale
- 18:07Speaker 1: would be above the so far NFL record of the
- 18:11Speaker 1: sale of six point zero five billion to the Washington Commanders.
- 18:14Speaker 1: We have spoken about this as well the Paul G.
- 18:17Speaker 1: Allen Estate. Jody Allen, the trust chair, she is under
- 18:23Speaker 1: no obligation to do this in a hurry. She is
- 18:25Speaker 1: under obligation to give the best deal that she can
- 18:28Speaker 1: get to the Allen's Trust because her brother's wishes were
- 18:31Speaker 1: for these sales of the blazers of the Seahawks and
- 18:34Speaker 1: all the other assets around global exploration and space exploration
- 18:39Speaker 1: and third world countries and water treatment and all healthcare.
- 18:44Speaker 1: All the sales of his assets are to benefit philanthropic interest.
- 18:48Speaker 1: So of course the trust wants to get the highest
- 18:50Speaker 1: sale price they can. And I said this yesterday, Travis.
- 18:54Speaker 1: I am still believing that there will be a local buyer,
- 18:57Speaker 1: or at least a buyer of some more local than
- 19:00Speaker 1: the two that we've already talked about, the Celtics investors
- 19:03Speaker 1: who are from London and from the East Coast, and
- 19:06Speaker 1: the minority investor in the San Francisco forty nine ers
- 19:09Speaker 1: who is the co founder of Son micro Systems. In
- 19:12Speaker 1: the Silicon Valley, there is corporate wealth here but it
- 19:17Speaker 1: takes time. There are very few people on planet Earth
- 19:20Speaker 1: because isout saying that it's going to write a ten
- 19:23Speaker 1: billion dollar check one person to buy this team. So
- 19:26Speaker 1: it's gonna be a consortium of owners, and it takes
- 19:30Speaker 1: time to get people to commit to that and get
- 19:32Speaker 1: all that the Seahawks are, whether the NFL owners, whatever,
- 19:36Speaker 1: these stories come out from NFL owners, the Seahawks themselves,
- 19:39Speaker 1: Jody Allen is under no obligation to do this in
- 19:41Speaker 1: a hurry because the trust owns it, she owns it.
- 19:46Speaker 1: They're not going anywhere. I don't see the urgency of
- 19:50Speaker 1: There was some artificial at the beginning of the sales
- 19:52Speaker 1: process saying some people saying this expected the league expects
- 19:56Speaker 1: it to be done before the start of the season.
- 19:58Speaker 1: That's pretty arbitrary and artificial. There's no reason for it
- 20:01Speaker 1: to be that because football operations are continuing the same anyway.
- 20:05Speaker 1: We're going to see little imaginations of this throughout this process.
- 20:09Speaker 1: It's going to take a very long time because a
- 20:11Speaker 1: lot of lawyers are going to be involved, because they're
- 20:12Speaker 1: going to be multiple bidders, and of course the league
- 20:15Speaker 1: and the team wants multiple bidders to drive up the price,
- 20:18Speaker 1: and that'll even elongate the review process and so on,
- 20:22Speaker 1: so I wouldn't get too fired up about well, it's
- 20:25Speaker 1: taken a while or the quote soft market nine billion
- 20:29Speaker 1: doesn't sound too soft to me. I mean, maybe it's
- 20:31Speaker 1: not eleven, but yeah.
- 20:33Speaker 6: That's kind of ridiculous that they're expecting so much and
- 20:37Speaker 6: seemingly are disappointed by a lower evaluation at this point.
- 20:41Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 20:41Speaker 6: I mean, also, who has that kind of like liquid
- 20:45Speaker 6: assets of our liquidity available to just toss into a team.
- 20:50Speaker 2: I don't know, not many many, four nine four or
- 20:53Speaker 2: five to one.
- 20:54Speaker 1: I hear you yesterday on the text line about the
- 20:57Speaker 1: London based buyer, Mettal in particular the Indian high steel
- 21:02Speaker 1: industry tycoon, and your fears about moving. There are no
- 21:06Speaker 1: indications from anyone, including potential bidders, including the league, that
- 21:10Speaker 1: the Seahawks would go anywhere, And the bottom line is,
- 21:14Speaker 1: why don't fix what's not broken? This is a defending
- 21:16Speaker 1: Super Bowl champion we talked about yesterday. I can't remember
- 21:19Speaker 1: the Celtics sold soon after they won the NBA Finals
- 21:21Speaker 1: a couple years ago, but not announced for sale two
- 21:25Speaker 1: weeks after they won a championship, like the Seahawks.
- 21:27Speaker 2: Word.
- 21:28Speaker 1: This is a really unique situation of a football operation
- 21:31Speaker 1: that is not broken, that doesn't need to be fixed,
- 21:34Speaker 1: and so far the indications of businesses normal on the
- 21:37Speaker 1: football side of it. Up next to go to baseball
- 21:40Speaker 1: the Mariners. They have a rotation decision to make. You're
- 21:44Speaker 1: gonna hear from Pete Woodworth, the Mariners pitching coach on
- 21:46Speaker 1: the specterru of perhaps a six man rotation of starting pitchers.
- 21:50Speaker 1: That's next on ninety three point three KJRFM.
- 22:12Speaker 2: Welcome back to show The Greg Best Show with Christopher
- 22:14Speaker 2: cad and Christopher Kidd.
- 22:15Speaker 1: Is traveling for a family graduation, so that a smugger
- 22:19Speaker 1: is in with us like a Super Bowl week againted
- 22:25Speaker 1: to coma Dodge text sign. Do we know why the
- 22:26Speaker 1: Patriots jet was at Boeing Field? Just I get asked
- 22:28Speaker 1: this like every time it's there. No, I don't. It
- 22:32Speaker 1: doesn't mean the Patriot, it doesn't mean Robert Kraft is
- 22:34Speaker 1: invading it. It's, as I understand it, a Boeing owned plane.
- 22:38Speaker 1: Boeing field could be maintenance, could be a bunch of things.
- 22:40Speaker 1: So no, I don't know the answer to that.
- 22:42Speaker 5: They're spying on us.
- 22:43Speaker 1: Yes, they're spying on the second phase of voluntary season workouts.
- 22:48Speaker 1: They're spying on them, pushing weights across the grass, and
- 22:52Speaker 1: you're written, but no, I don't think so. Four nine
- 22:56Speaker 1: four five one the Tacoma Dodge text sign. We asked
- 22:58Speaker 1: the question to start your motherday memories, and some of
- 23:01Speaker 1: you are bringing in some great ones, and those of
- 23:03Speaker 1: you who have lost mothers recently at the age of
- 23:06Speaker 1: stage of life that's happening as it is with our family.
- 23:09Speaker 1: Then condolences and wish for great memories for you and
- 23:14Speaker 1: your family around mothers and father's days can be tough,
- 23:18Speaker 1: but there's always great memories and legacies to live on.
- 23:21Speaker 1: We'll read those back at eleven thirty. Pete Woodworth is
- 23:27Speaker 1: the pitching coach for the Mariners. He's a friend of
- 23:29Speaker 1: Chuck Powells and Bucky Jacobson's and on the Morning Show
- 23:31Speaker 1: quite a bit. He was on the Morning Show this
- 23:33Speaker 1: morning about a couple hours ago from Chicago, where the
- 23:37Speaker 1: Mariners are playing the Chicago White Sox. Bryce Miller appears
- 23:44Speaker 1: was his last minor league rehabilitation outing from his side
- 23:48Speaker 1: injury as a bleaque injury. He pitched five plus innings
- 23:51Speaker 1: in Hyay Everett on Wednesday night would put him in
- 23:55Speaker 1: line if he gets his regular rest to pitch again
- 23:57Speaker 1: on Monday. The Mariners are in Houston to play the
- 24:00Speaker 1: trash Cans on Monday, and it makes sense that that's
- 24:03Speaker 1: would be the next start for Bryce Miller. Doesn't appear
- 24:06Speaker 1: he needs another minor league start. So what happens when
- 24:10Speaker 1: he comes back? Well, Emerson Hancock has been incredible. I've
- 24:14Speaker 1: seen people listing him as a cy young candidate here early.
- 24:17Speaker 2: In the season.
- 24:17Speaker 5: Wow, yeah, Emerson Hancock. Who would have thought? Right? He's
- 24:22Speaker 5: been that good.
- 24:23Speaker 2: It's up three e ra and taking one hitters and
- 24:27Speaker 2: no hitters at times. Deeper into games.
- 24:30Speaker 1: Luis Castillo doesn't have a win yet, and his he
- 24:33Speaker 1: arrays above six. So Chuck Paula asked Pete were Worth,
- 24:38Speaker 1: the Mariner's pitching coach this morning, about the specter perhaps
- 24:41Speaker 1: keeping all of them in when Bryce Miller comes back
- 24:43Speaker 1: with a six man rotation.
- 24:44Speaker 8: Yeah, it's a it's a good, good problem to have
- 24:47Speaker 8: you walk out into your garage and you say, which
- 24:50Speaker 8: one of my Lamborghini's am I going to drive today?
- 24:53Speaker 8: It's a great.
- 24:53Speaker 2: Issue to have.
- 24:55Speaker 8: But yeah, I don't have much more information on the
- 25:02Speaker 8: other than we have six Lamborghinis that are fueled up.
- 25:06Speaker 8: I did get to see Bryce the other night pitching,
- 25:09Speaker 8: ever it. Yeah, he's trending in the right direction. He
- 25:12Speaker 8: didn't strike out as many eighteen year olds as I
- 25:15Speaker 8: thought he would, But yeah.
- 25:17Speaker 5: The stuff looks really.
- 25:18Speaker 8: Good and he feels really good, which is obviously the
- 25:22Speaker 8: most important part coming.
- 25:23Speaker 2: Through a rehab.
- 25:24Speaker 5: All right, So I got it.
- 25:25Speaker 8: Yeah, you can go out there and compete and afterwards
- 25:29Speaker 8: you don't feel any pain or discomfort.
- 25:32Speaker 2: All right.
- 25:32Speaker 9: So now I got to get creative with how I
- 25:34Speaker 9: ask this, because I certainly don't want to put you
- 25:36Speaker 9: in a pinch, and I don't want long pregnant pauses
- 25:39Speaker 9: in our conversation.
- 25:40Speaker 5: So as do you have such a good.
- 25:43Speaker 9: Group that if one of them was asked to go
- 25:47Speaker 9: to the bullpen for a while of the six, that
- 25:51Speaker 9: that would be fine with them.
- 25:55Speaker 2: Yeah, they'll still pitch, okay, all right, they won't quit
- 26:02Speaker 2: the team, one of the.
- 26:06Speaker 8: They won't start a que One of one of the
- 26:12Speaker 8: best things I've heard guys say throughout the years is
- 26:17Speaker 8: that the more they realize that.
- 26:19Speaker 10: The the number ending doesn't really matter, Okay, like whether
- 26:28Speaker 10: it's the first or the fourth, or the sixth or
- 26:30Speaker 10: the ninth.
- 26:31Speaker 8: Once they realize that, like, it doesn't matter what number
- 26:34Speaker 8: the ending is. Every inning is the same. You have
- 26:37Speaker 8: to get three guys out. They're either right handed or
- 26:39Speaker 8: or left handed. The score doesn't matter the time of day,
- 26:45Speaker 8: like it's if you can boil it down to it's
- 26:48Speaker 8: it's simplest game, like it's you verse a hitter. It's
- 26:52Speaker 8: you executing pitches to get three guys out. If you
- 26:56Speaker 8: can do that, it doesn't really matter. And the more
- 26:59Speaker 8: we they put pressure on different innings or different situations
- 27:04Speaker 8: or different environments, they're just adding more to their plate
- 27:10Speaker 8: that's unnecessary. So I've I've found that the guys that
- 27:17Speaker 8: that do this job the best are the guys that
- 27:20Speaker 8: really simplify it down to that.
- 27:23Speaker 2: That's Mary's basically Pete Woodworth being evasive.
- 27:26Speaker 1: Of course, in the answer, Chuck had a good time
- 27:29Speaker 1: playing Lolly with him back and forth on that this
- 27:32Speaker 1: morning that was on the Morning Show. Yeah, it's easy
- 27:35Speaker 1: to say they don't care when they come in the
- 27:37Speaker 1: game what number the ending is. After they've already gotten
- 27:40Speaker 1: their contracts as starting pitchers. Right Luis Castillo is making
- 27:43Speaker 1: twenty four million dollars this year as a three time
- 27:46Speaker 1: All Star, and so of course he could say, well,
- 27:50Speaker 1: if I come in later, he as a three time
- 27:52Speaker 1: All Star with twenty four million dollar contract, would notice
- 27:55Speaker 1: if he was entering games at the fift or sixth
- 27:58Speaker 1: innings the starting moment. It's a matter of how much
- 28:01Speaker 1: he cares like is he willing to do that thirty
- 28:05Speaker 1: three years old? I contend they keep him in the
- 28:08Speaker 1: rotation because you may want to trade him, and your
- 28:12Speaker 1: trade value would plummet if you have him as a
- 28:15Speaker 1: middle reliever. Who's going to give up much for a
- 28:18Speaker 1: thirty three year old guy making twenty four million dollars
- 28:20Speaker 1: pitching the six and seventh innings only. That's my argument
- 28:26Speaker 1: to a six man rotation. Emerson hand go ahead.
- 28:30Speaker 5: You can't really shop him with the numbers he has
- 28:32Speaker 5: right now.
- 28:33Speaker 1: Though, exactly so, your choices are to release him and
- 28:37Speaker 1: eat the money, put him in as a long reliever
- 28:41Speaker 1: and have him no even if he if he pitches
- 28:46Speaker 1: one inning, two innings, three innings at a time, or
- 28:48Speaker 1: is the long man if somebody gets shelled, his era
- 28:52Speaker 1: is not going to go that much better on the
- 28:54Speaker 1: papers in a one or two inning stint. It's going
- 28:57Speaker 1: to take up a long time to get back under six.
- 28:59Speaker 1: If you're trying to trade, teams are just going to
- 29:00Speaker 1: look at numbers. Sheer numbers, not to mention wins. He
- 29:04Speaker 1: didn't have any wins. This is tied for the longest
- 29:06Speaker 1: stint into a season, seven starts without a win. Four
- 29:11Speaker 1: of he's a Castillo has allowed four or more runs
- 29:14Speaker 1: and five of his seven starts this season. In fact,
- 29:17Speaker 1: his best start was his first one. You have no
- 29:19Speaker 1: runs and the very first started against the Yankees. So
- 29:25Speaker 1: Emerson Hancock now he was in because Bryce Miller was
- 29:29Speaker 1: out to begin the season. Otherwise he would have started
- 29:31Speaker 1: into coma.
- 29:33Speaker 2: Well.
- 29:33Speaker 1: Like I said, he's been the best, most consistent starter.
- 29:36Speaker 1: He's on people's high. Younger Ward canates Lizzy's taking one
- 29:38Speaker 1: and two and zero hitters into six seven innings consistently.
- 29:42Speaker 1: He's been great the ra under three. People have said
- 29:46Speaker 1: this a six man rotation. So I bottom line is
- 29:50Speaker 1: you can't take him out. What message sent in to
- 29:52Speaker 1: him and the other pitchers, Let's take this guy out
- 29:55Speaker 1: who's been our best, most consistent guy and put him
- 29:57Speaker 1: back into coma. See that, and you can't put him
- 30:02Speaker 1: in the bullpen. I wouldn't think put him in the
- 30:03Speaker 1: bullpen and take out your best every fifth day guy,
- 30:07Speaker 1: so he seems to stick. People say six men rotation
- 30:10Speaker 1: hurts the bullpen, Well, it's already hurt. They missing their
- 30:13Speaker 1: primary setup guy too. It's primary set of guys right
- 30:17Speaker 1: and left, and they're both on Matt Brash and Gabe
- 30:21Speaker 1: Spire are both on the injured list. Andre's Munos is
- 30:24Speaker 1: nowhere near himself or anywhere near close to his form.
- 30:30Speaker 1: Jose Ferrara is Ferrari is actually their best reliever right now.
- 30:34Speaker 1: And a guy got the save in the last game
- 30:36Speaker 1: after pitching consecutive days and that's it. Then they got
- 30:40Speaker 1: guys like Simpson and dudes they've called up from Tacoma.
- 30:44Speaker 1: So what if you're I would shorten the bullpen at
- 30:47Speaker 1: this point until Spire, at least until Spire and Brash
- 30:51Speaker 1: come back. And when they do come back, there's no
- 30:54Speaker 1: guarantee they're going to be lights out after being out
- 30:56Speaker 1: a while, So so what if it.
- 30:59Speaker 5: Hurts the bullpen, one's already hurt. I would do less.
- 31:02Speaker 2: Reliance on the bullpen at this point and more on
- 31:05Speaker 2: the sixth rotation. Six man rotation. It does mess with
- 31:09Speaker 2: The pitchers.
- 31:10Speaker 1: Are creatures of habit, and they do their long toss
- 31:12Speaker 1: two days after their start, and then they do this
- 31:14Speaker 1: and then they will pick.
- 31:16Speaker 5: Yeah, I know it grows the routine off of it. Yeah.
- 31:18Speaker 1: Absolutely, And baseball's players are so creatures of habit because
- 31:22Speaker 1: of the routine of one hundred and sixty two games.
- 31:25Speaker 1: But the Mariners aren't the only team considering or facing
- 31:29Speaker 1: this situation. The Braves that just came through here have
- 31:31Speaker 1: six starters at the Triple A at the major league
- 31:34Speaker 1: level now that they brought up Jared Richie from Bainbridge Island,
- 31:39Speaker 1: have him a fixture, and he pitched well the other
- 31:43Speaker 1: day except for one ending that the Mariners finally got
- 31:45Speaker 1: to them. So they're considering a six man rotation. The Yankees,
- 31:49Speaker 1: because they're the Yankees and can buy all the pitchers
- 31:51Speaker 1: they want, are considering a six man rotation. It's not
- 31:54Speaker 1: unheard of, especially Travis early in the season when you're
- 31:58Speaker 1: worried about pitch counts and extending guys it starts and innings.
- 32:02Speaker 1: I don't know why it's sharing the load in early
- 32:04Speaker 1: May is such a bad idea?
- 32:06Speaker 6: No, no, I I have it Bryce hasn't shown me
- 32:11Speaker 6: anything in a while. I hopefully he's gonna come back
- 32:15Speaker 6: and be as good as he has shown in the
- 32:17Speaker 6: in the past. The past couple of seasons, he's been
- 32:20Speaker 6: kind of disappointing to me. I think maybe you throw
- 32:23Speaker 6: him into the rotation and see what happens, and if
- 32:27Speaker 6: he struggles, then put.
- 32:29Speaker 5: Him in the bullpen.
- 32:30Speaker 2: He'd be your odd man out.
- 32:31Speaker 5: I think so.
- 32:32Speaker 2: And even Logan Gilbert hasn't been Logan gilt.
- 32:34Speaker 6: No, not no, he hasn't pretty disappointing so far, but
- 32:39Speaker 6: I think his metrics are there. He's got a little unlucky. Yeah,
- 32:46Speaker 6: I think Bryce give him a give him a tryout
- 32:49Speaker 6: in the in the rotation, and then.
- 32:51Speaker 2: How many try out? Two three starts?
- 32:53Speaker 5: Two yeah, three starts, three starts.
- 32:55Speaker 1: Okay, So that takes you into June four nine, four
- 32:57Speaker 1: five one to come to come a Dodge Tex sign.
- 32:59Speaker 2: What would you do with Louis Castillo?
- 33:01Speaker 1: Keeping in mind he's making twenty four million dollars at
- 33:03Speaker 1: a three time All Star thirty three million dollars. Excuse me,
- 33:06Speaker 1: thirty three years old, twenty four million dollars. What kind
- 33:11Speaker 1: of performance would you get from him? No matter what
- 33:13Speaker 1: people would have just said, what kind of performance would
- 33:17Speaker 1: you give a veteran with that status in that contract
- 33:19Speaker 1: if you put him in long relief or middle relief
- 33:21Speaker 1: in the bullpen. It's not like he's going to be
- 33:24Speaker 1: rip Roorn can't wait to do it. These guys are competitors,
- 33:28Speaker 1: want the ball. That's what they've done and all their
- 33:30Speaker 1: lives to get to where they are. What would you
- 33:32Speaker 1: do would you do a six man rotation? Would you
- 33:34Speaker 1: do Louis Castilla or the pen? Everson Hancock to the pen?
- 33:37Speaker 1: Bryce Miller on a short least trial basis. As Travis
- 33:40Speaker 1: just said, four nine, four to five. One will readback
- 33:43Speaker 1: your text at eleven thirty. And in some ways it's
- 33:46Speaker 1: a great problem to have because now you have, if
- 33:48Speaker 1: Miller is in fact all the way back from his
- 33:50Speaker 1: side injury, six healthy pitchers, all of whom have performed
- 33:54Speaker 1: excelled at the major league level is a luxury. And
- 33:58Speaker 1: of course this team is built on and going to
- 34:00Speaker 1: go as far as they're pitching. I just think, man,
- 34:03Speaker 1: with this, I don't even know why there's a discussion
- 34:06Speaker 1: on whether they're going to six man rotation with this
- 34:08Speaker 1: bullpen the way it is, I think they absolutely should
- 34:12Speaker 1: go to six man rotation, and I don't for how
- 34:15Speaker 1: long I don't know, but maybe until at least Spire
- 34:19Speaker 1: and Brash come back and you can set up your bullpen.
- 34:23Speaker 1: The other thing is it obviously does is it goes
- 34:25Speaker 1: absolutely against analytics, right, you would with your bullpen the
- 34:30Speaker 1: way it is, it would be who the bullpen. It
- 34:32Speaker 1: would help them if the starters went longer. But there's
- 34:35Speaker 1: all these numbers that say went third time through the
- 34:37Speaker 1: order and starters, oh, I mean people managers today, including
- 34:42Speaker 1: the one in Seattle in the front office makes them
- 34:45Speaker 1: this way, are absolutely scared to death to have starters
- 34:48Speaker 1: face lineups for the third time.
- 34:50Speaker 5: Yeah, pitchers don't go one hundred pitches, are.
- 34:52Speaker 1: Right, there's like some glass ceiling you can't shatter where
- 34:56Speaker 1: the guy is going to be out for the rest
- 34:57Speaker 1: of his career if he throws one hundred and one
- 34:59Speaker 1: pitches anymore. And so this would fly in the face
- 35:03Speaker 1: of some of that too, if you're going to rely
- 35:06Speaker 1: more on starters to go deeper in games and more
- 35:08Speaker 1: starters at the same time. But I just think the
- 35:11Speaker 1: bullpen in the stated it is, of course, you know
- 35:14Speaker 1: what else would help all of this, Travis, and let's
- 35:16Speaker 1: out there their offense if they could score runs oh
- 35:19Speaker 1: the bats, Yeah, so they didn't have so they had
- 35:22Speaker 1: a little margin for error. Sure, if your pitchers give
- 35:24Speaker 1: up three or four runs, you're not automatically doomed.
- 35:28Speaker 5: That would help imagine that. So let's see.
- 35:32Speaker 2: Brendan Donovan coming back from the ange list.
- 35:35Speaker 1: Resetting the lineup with him back at the top of
- 35:36Speaker 1: it will get them going. I mean, they weren't great
- 35:40Speaker 1: guns when he was there before he got hurt, but
- 35:43Speaker 1: he was their most consistent hitter. They're the only three
- 35:45Speaker 1: hundred plus hitter on base guy at the top of
- 35:48Speaker 1: the lineup. Yeah, his third base defense has been not
- 35:52Speaker 1: so great, and that somewhat of an experiment for a
- 35:54Speaker 1: guy who played most of his careers and second baseman
- 35:57Speaker 1: and outfitter. But he's a gold Golve player with St.
- 36:00Speaker 1: Louis a couple of years ago, primarily second base. But
- 36:03Speaker 1: let's see, let's see if Brandon Donovan, who it sounds like,
- 36:07Speaker 1: will be back, perhaps even for tonight the series opener
- 36:10Speaker 1: get activated, will be the catalyst to reset the lineup,
- 36:14Speaker 1: and then Cal Rowley has to get going. I mean,
- 36:17Speaker 1: this is absolutely not what the Mariners were counting on afterward.
- 36:22Speaker 1: The season he had last year, as I mentioned, since
- 36:24Speaker 1: the side injury he missed three games. He's zero for
- 36:27Speaker 1: eight with five strikeouts in the two games as a
- 36:29Speaker 1: designated hitter. When does he come back to be a
- 36:32Speaker 1: catcher again. That's another thing we'll be watching on this
- 36:35Speaker 1: road trip that goes to Chicago and then after three
- 36:38Speaker 1: games with the White Sox, three games with the trash
- 36:40Speaker 1: Cans in Houston starting on Monday, four nine, four five,
- 36:43Speaker 1: one to come a dodge text line, as we will
- 36:46Speaker 1: always readback at eleven thirty.
- 36:47Speaker 2: Text, we'll do that again in about an hour's time.
- 36:50Speaker 2: Up next today is an anniversary Throwback Friday. Flashback Friday.
- 36:55Speaker 1: Today's an anniversary of a Sonics event that was part
- 36:57Speaker 1: of NBA history. You may not want to remember, but
- 37:00Speaker 1: it's worth looking back on for what it spawned in
- 37:03Speaker 1: the Sonics franchise history. That's next on ninety three point
- 37:06Speaker 1: three KJRFM, Welcome Back.
- 37:19Speaker 2: Travis playing some funky stuff.
- 37:21Speaker 1: Greg Bell, News Tribune Travis Mooger with you on a
- 37:24Speaker 1: Friday edition of The Greg Best Show with Christopher Grade.
- 37:26Speaker 1: Chris has gone to a family graduation in Louisiana College graduation.
- 37:31Speaker 1: He'll be back on Monday. It's graduation season. Hats off
- 37:35Speaker 1: to all those grads out there. Maybe you're heading into
- 37:37Speaker 1: one here in the next couple weeks. That's off to
- 37:41Speaker 1: all of you can graduations, graduates and parents.
- 37:44Speaker 5: My daughter's graduating from pre school day.
- 37:47Speaker 2: Did you put signs in the yard like preschool parents
- 37:50Speaker 2: do now?
- 37:50Speaker 5: Yeah, class of twenty six. No, not for free school.
- 37:54Speaker 1: Thanks glad you drew a line there. Oh, congrats to you.
- 37:58Speaker 1: Thank you, mom and dad and her the Speaking of
- 38:02Speaker 1: school and kids. College basketball, it became official yesterday that
- 38:06Speaker 1: the NCAA is going to expand from sixty eight to
- 38:09Speaker 1: seventy six teams. Now, this is gonna make no more
- 38:13Speaker 1: first four. There's gonna be twelve teams twelve games. Rather
- 38:18Speaker 1: in the opening ground Tuesday and Wednesday. Instead of just
- 38:21Speaker 1: a first four, they're gonna have first four games, They're
- 38:24Speaker 1: gonna have twelve games with twenty four teams, thirty two
- 38:27Speaker 1: at large bids and the rest of the field forty
- 38:29Speaker 1: four will be excuse me, forty four at large bids.
- 38:32Speaker 1: The rest of the field be automatic qualifiers thirty two.
- 38:34Speaker 1: Now that the PAC twelve is coming back in its
- 38:37Speaker 1: new form next year. That's with Gonzaga and Washington State
- 38:40Speaker 1: and Oregon State and whatnot in pro basketball. Yesterday was
- 38:46Speaker 1: an anniversary. Maybe I should even mention it. But in
- 38:49Speaker 1: the first week at nineteen ninety four, I was here
- 38:51Speaker 1: in Seattle is my first full year actually living in
- 38:54Speaker 1: Seattle as an officer in the Army at Fort Lewis.
- 38:57Speaker 1: The Sonics were the top seed in the NBA Western
- 38:59Speaker 1: Conference that year.
- 39:00Speaker 5: They had the.
- 39:01Speaker 2: League's best record. Those of you either that.
- 39:02Speaker 1: Were around I've been in Seattle more than a day
- 39:05Speaker 1: or three, might remember this were you around.
- 39:07Speaker 6: Travis, I'm from La So I grew up in La
- 39:11Speaker 6: Okay a Lakers fan.
- 39:13Speaker 1: Okay, Sorry, well, then ninety five would be more for
- 39:15Speaker 1: you when the Lakers.
- 39:16Speaker 2: I'll get to that in a second.
- 39:18Speaker 1: So ninety four of the Sonics first week in May
- 39:20Speaker 1: had the league's best record. George Carl's team sixty three
- 39:24Speaker 1: and nineteen. Remember Gary Payton, Shaun Camp, Nate McMillan, Debtla Stramp,
- 39:28Speaker 1: Sam Perkins had Michael Cage on that team. Kendall gill
- 39:31Speaker 1: I watched all the games, went to a lot of them.
- 39:34Speaker 1: Nate McMillan, I mean Ricky Pierce was off the bench.
- 39:37Speaker 2: If they were loaded.
- 39:40Speaker 1: Well, they went up two games to nine on eight
- 39:42Speaker 1: seed Denver after two wins at the old Seattle Center
- 39:45Speaker 1: Coliseum arena before Key Arena. I mean this is three
- 39:49Speaker 1: buildings ago on the same site at Seattle Center. Then
- 39:53Speaker 1: the Nuggets won two in a row in Denver to
- 39:55Speaker 1: force a deciding game five May seventh, yesterday May seventh,
- 40:01Speaker 1: nineteen ninety four.
- 40:03Speaker 2: This is what happened. That all they wanted the decor
- 40:07Speaker 2: of the basketball.
- 40:07Speaker 5: They don't want to give up the three.
- 40:11Speaker 11: John Perkins shoots, the two bought by Brian Williams, recovered
- 40:14Speaker 11: by Gil eight seconds Perkins batted back.
- 40:18Speaker 2: Out McMillan another three way short. That's it.
- 40:25Speaker 11: Come embraces the ball and the unlikely upset one of
- 40:31Speaker 11: the great central NBA playoff history. The eighth seed, a
- 40:36Speaker 11: team that was two games over five hundred on the season,
- 40:39Speaker 11: The Denver Nuggets, the youngest in the NBA, have beaten
- 40:45Speaker 11: the team of the best record in the NBA, the
- 40:47Speaker 11: Seattle SuperSonics.
- 40:50Speaker 1: It's dick Enberg and NBA on NBC, the Immortal dick
- 40:53Speaker 1: Enberg speaking of Southern California.
- 40:56Speaker 2: But that was the first time.
- 40:59Speaker 1: Everyone remembers to Combo cradling the ball between his hands,
- 41:03Speaker 1: lying on his back at the Center Coliseum Arena in
- 41:06Speaker 1: Seattle Center. First time an eight seed in NBA history
- 41:09Speaker 1: beat a one seed in the playoff series, and the
- 41:12Speaker 1: City Travis was just stunt, just stunt, because the Sonics
- 41:18Speaker 1: were back.
- 41:18Speaker 5: Man.
- 41:19Speaker 1: This was the first time since they won in seventy
- 41:20Speaker 1: nine that they were going to go to the finals
- 41:22Speaker 1: and number one seed and home court advantage, and they
- 41:26Speaker 1: lost in the first round to Matumbo and the Nuggets.
- 41:29Speaker 1: As Dick Emberg you just said, they were two games
- 41:30Speaker 1: over five hundred that year. The Sonics were forty four
- 41:33Speaker 1: games over five hundred that year. And the Sonics lost
- 41:37Speaker 1: the first one to lose to an eight in the
- 41:38Speaker 1: first round, losing three straight. That was the last game
- 41:42Speaker 1: in the history of the Seattle Center Coliseum as it was,
- 41:45Speaker 1: because then after that they rebuilt it into Key Arena,
- 41:50Speaker 1: dug it out, made it steep, and for a season
- 41:54Speaker 1: after that, while the KI Arena was getting billed, those
- 41:56Speaker 1: of you who are around remember where they played the
- 41:59Speaker 1: Tacoma Dome.
- 42:00Speaker 5: That happened.
- 42:01Speaker 1: I bought season tickets when I was a lieutenant at
- 42:04Speaker 1: Fort Lewis. We lived in Federal Away with two other
- 42:06Speaker 1: lieutenants and a house rented there on dash Point, and
- 42:09Speaker 1: we bought some doctor on pill Hill in Seattle his
- 42:13Speaker 1: season tickets because he didn't want to drive from Seattle
- 42:15Speaker 1: Luke Tacola, so he sold his tickets for just one season,
- 42:17Speaker 1: and we bought them.
- 42:18Speaker 2: Because we were already halfway there in Federal Away, or
- 42:20Speaker 2: more than halfway.
- 42:21Speaker 1: So we bought season tickets. So what happens George carl
- 42:25Speaker 1: and the Sonics won fifty seven games. The following season.
- 42:28Speaker 1: They were second in the West, the number two seed.
- 42:31Speaker 1: I'll never forget. We had season tickets, so we had
- 42:34Speaker 1: rights to buy playoff tickets, and we did, and back
- 42:36Speaker 1: then it was paper tickets, and they sent the entire
- 42:40Speaker 1: postseason ahead of time, so we had sheets of We
- 42:43Speaker 1: had the NBA Finals in the nineteen ninety five NBA
- 42:45Speaker 1: Finals tickets in our house, and we're like, this is great.
- 42:48Speaker 5: We're twenty four years old, this is all.
- 42:49Speaker 2: Wow. That doctor was stupid for selling his tickets.
- 42:53Speaker 5: What happened?
- 42:54Speaker 1: Eldon Campbell in the Los Angeles Lakers, the seventh seed,
- 42:59Speaker 1: barely five hundred team, beat the Sonics that year in
- 43:02Speaker 1: the first round.
- 43:04Speaker 5: Yeah, I remember that series.
- 43:06Speaker 1: The lights went out in the Tacoma Dome in one
- 43:08Speaker 1: of the I think it was Game two. There was
- 43:10Speaker 1: a power outing because it was really hot in that
- 43:13Speaker 1: may day in Tacoma. The Tacoma Dome for the Sonics
- 43:16Speaker 1: was experience I actually talk about someday. It was weird,
- 43:19Speaker 1: really weird, really loud, but really weird to have the
- 43:22Speaker 1: Sonics in the Tacoma Dome.
- 43:24Speaker 2: But then they lost that.
- 43:25Speaker 1: But then all of that the GAT the ninety five
- 43:28Speaker 1: ninety six season and those of you around know what
- 43:30Speaker 1: happened there brand new Key Arena. The Sonics won sixty
- 43:33Speaker 1: four games, the number one seed again. They stormed through
- 43:36Speaker 1: the Kings in the Rockets, they beat Stocked them alone
- 43:38Speaker 1: in the Jazz and seven games in the Western Conference Finals.
- 43:40Speaker 1: Then they ran into Michael Jordan the Bulls in the
- 43:42Speaker 1: finals and this town was off the hook for the finals.
- 43:46Speaker 2: Jordan and the Bulls coming to Seattle.
- 43:49Speaker 1: The Sonics fell behind three to zero in the series.
- 43:51Speaker 1: They won the last two in Key Arena to make
- 43:54Speaker 1: it three too, and they had the Bulls.
- 43:56Speaker 5: They were leading the Bulls late in.
- 43:57Speaker 1: Game six in Chicago and they ended up losing that game.
- 44:01Speaker 1: I think it was an old Chicago stadium at the time,
- 44:03Speaker 1: right before that arena closed to the United Center. But yeah,
- 44:06Speaker 1: they Bulls, Jordan, the irrepressible Jordan the end up winning
- 44:10Speaker 1: in six games, but Carlin and Sonics never made it
- 44:13Speaker 1: back to the Western Conference Finals after that finals run
- 44:16Speaker 1: to the Bulls. By the end of the n eight season,
- 44:18Speaker 1: carl was gone, Paul Westfall came in, the team broke out,
- 44:21Speaker 1: and then ten years later they were the Oklahoma City Thunder.
- 44:24Speaker 2: And so it goes, why do I bring all this
- 44:27Speaker 2: sordid history back up?
- 44:28Speaker 1: Well, this week, Samantha Holloway formally put in her hat
- 44:33Speaker 1: in the ring to be the new owner of the
- 44:35Speaker 1: new Sonics to come back when the NBA eventually gets
- 44:39Speaker 1: around of voting on expansion to Seattle in Las Vegas,
- 44:42Speaker 1: hopefully in a couple of years time.
- 44:44Speaker 2: Twenty twenty eight. It's your Friday flashback. I know it's
- 44:47Speaker 2: probably a bad.
- 44:48Speaker 6: Flash, painful for many, painful for those of us have
- 44:52Speaker 6: been around Seattle for more than a day.
- 44:54Speaker 2: Up next, we'll go back to the Mariners to Chicago.
- 44:58Speaker 1: Gary Hill Junior Mariners broadcast on the radio side is
- 45:01Speaker 1: going to be in Kimisky Park for the series. He's
- 45:03Speaker 1: going to be on your radio next eleven thirty, we'll
