- 5:43SPEAKER_02: I know.
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah, what's the point?
- 5:47SPEAKER_02: In the 60s, you have to remove a little different time.
- 5:51SPEAKER_06: Well, if I remember correctly too, isn't Phil Spector like a monster or something?
- 5:55SPEAKER_02: If it's the same guy I'm thinking of, yeah, he was a record mobile.
- 5:58SPEAKER_06: Mm-hmm.

- 9:11SPEAKER_02: And and she married uh Jonathan Greenfield in 1982.
- 9:15SPEAKER_06: Oh, okay.
- 9:16SPEAKER_02: Okay, so that's where the uh the Greenfield name comes from.
- 9:19SPEAKER_02: The uh because that's officially Yabet Greenfield came from.
- 9:23SPEAKER_06: Yes.
- 9:23SPEAKER_06: I thought it was because we were talking about her heritage.
- 9:26SPEAKER_06: She has Irish heritage, and I thought maybe that might be the old Greenfields out in Ireland.
- 9:32SPEAKER_02: That was horrible, but she was born in East Harlem, New York City.
- 9:35SPEAKER_06: Oh, good for her.
- 9:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 9:37SPEAKER_02: Tough gal.
- 9:38SPEAKER_02: Grew up in Washington Heights, uh, the section of Manhattan.
- 9:41SPEAKER_02: Her mother was African American and Cherokee descent.
- 9:45SPEAKER_02: Her father was Irish American.
- 9:47SPEAKER_02: Representative.
- 10:28SPEAKER_02: Bennett and her sisters, Estelle Bennett, 1941 to 2009, uh, were encouraged to sing by their large family, as was their cousin, Nedra Talley.
- 10:39SPEAKER_02: I wonder if that's any relation to Josh Talley, who used to work for me.
- 10:43SPEAKER_06: I'm certain, I'm certainly.
- 10:47SPEAKER_06: You should tell everybody now that you have a connection to Ross Director.
- 10:52SPEAKER_02: Um he was born in Nedra.
- 10:55SPEAKER_02: That might be uh that might be a female, Nedra Talley.
- 10:58SPEAKER_02: Born in 1946.
- 10:59SPEAKER_02: The trio uh formed the Darling Sisters, known later as the Ronettes.
- 11:05SPEAKER_02: And they performed locally while attending George Washington High School in Washington High School.
- 11:10SPEAKER_02: Oh, that's adorable.
- 11:11SPEAKER_02: That is pretty cool.
- 11:15SPEAKER_02: All right, well, listen, uh I want to play one more song, and then I want you to, and then when we come back, we're gonna tackle her.
- 11:21SPEAKER_02: I want you to bash uh Phil.
- 11:24SPEAKER_02: I do my best.
- 11:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but I I I I think and you and you had looked it up.

- 11:30SPEAKER_06: He murdered somebody was convicted for murder.
- 11:33SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and he was claiming that he was innocent.
- 11:34SPEAKER_02: I that was a big Here's what I know.
- 11:37SPEAKER_06: Um it's ingrained in my brain.
- 11:39SPEAKER_06: I was a kid, but I guess when that trial happened, that crazy picture of him with the gigantic, like frizzy haired afro.
- 11:47SPEAKER_06: Right, right.
- 11:47SPEAKER_06: And he just looks like a little turtleman, shrunk down in his seat.
- 11:51SPEAKER_06: I'm like, it's weird for me to, as an adult, learn that he's such a major part of American music history.
- 11:58SPEAKER_06: And I'm like, the frizzy turtleman?
- 12:00SPEAKER_06: Okay.
- 12:01SPEAKER_06: So, okay, there we go.
- 12:03SPEAKER_06: I insulted him a little bit there.
- 12:05SPEAKER_06: You feel better?
- 12:06SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 12:06SPEAKER_06: How dare he put Ronnie in a corner and not let her perform?
- 12:11SPEAKER_02: How's that for a beat?
- 12:13SPEAKER_06: Hole.
- 12:14SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 12:14SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 12:15SPEAKER_06: I got one for you by the Ronettes.
- 12:17SPEAKER_02: Lay it on me.
- 12:18SPEAKER_06: It was one you said you wanted to hear, walking in the rain.
- 12:20SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah, absolutely.
- 12:21SPEAKER_06: Let's try it out.
- 12:22SPEAKER_02: I'm ready.
- 12:24SPEAKER_02: Got a crayon color me ready.
- 12:25SPEAKER_02: Ooh, ooh, thunder.
- 12:27SPEAKER_02: Anything that starts with thunder is fantastic.
- 12:48SPEAKER_04: And I need him.
- 12:57SPEAKER_04: I need him.
- 15:30SPEAKER_02: But you don't have time to have a cookie.

- 15:49SPEAKER_06: Dang my comedic timing.
- 15:50SPEAKER_06: Hey, um, what were you saying about?
- 15:52SPEAKER_06: The mic's on.
- 15:52SPEAKER_06: Look.
- 15:53SPEAKER_06: If you want to say something.
- 15:54SPEAKER_06: Bye, David.

- 16:14SPEAKER_02: That's right.
- 16:15SPEAKER_02: It was a uh he got the lesser charge uh second degree instead of first.
- 16:21SPEAKER_06: He died in prison, though, I think.
- 16:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 16:23SPEAKER_06: 81.
- 16:24SPEAKER_02: 81 years old?
- 16:25SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 16:26SPEAKER_06: And for some reason, he's been making bad decisions since the beginning because he didn't want to let Ron Inspector perform.
- 16:32SPEAKER_02: You know, that's uh that's insecurity.
- 16:36SPEAKER_06: It is 100%.
- 16:38SPEAKER_02: Pure and simple.
- 16:38SPEAKER_06: I mean he has his beautiful, talented wife and he wants to keep her in a cake.
- 16:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 16:43SPEAKER_02: You know, I I I would love uh if I had uh if I had somebody, if I was seeing somebody or married to somebody, I would do everything I can to promote that.

- 17:36SPEAKER_06: Slash Tandoori Chicken?
- 17:38SPEAKER_02: I swear it says Try Some Buy Some slash uh Tandoori Chicken.
- 17:44SPEAKER_06: At Abbey Road Studios, the fat classic.

- 17:51SPEAKER_02: We may not have it.
- 17:52SPEAKER_02: And then an Apple 1832 in the US.
- 17:56SPEAKER_02: The A-Side was written by George Harrison and produced by both him and Bill Spector.
- 18:00SPEAKER_02: Although the single was not a big hit, it uh its backing track was used two years later for Harrison's own version of the song on his chart-topping Living in the Material World album.
- 18:14SPEAKER_06: I have both versions on Spotify.
- 18:16SPEAKER_06: One by Ronnie Specter, one by George Harrison.
- 18:18SPEAKER_02: Let's do Ronnie's.
- 18:19SPEAKER_06: Yeah, let's do Ronnie's.
- 18:21SPEAKER_06: Especially since it piqued our interest.
- 18:23SPEAKER_06: Yes, right.
- 18:24SPEAKER_06: And if it's any girl.
- 18:25SPEAKER_02: Have you had Dandory chicken?
- 18:28SPEAKER_06: Have you had anything?
- 18:29SPEAKER_06: No, I've probably had some.
- 18:31SPEAKER_02: Is it?
- 18:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's a special pot.
- 18:33SPEAKER_06: It's got a hole in the top and a special kind of way to cook it like a Dutch oven.
- 18:37SPEAKER_06: Yeah, kind of.
- 18:37SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 18:38SPEAKER_06: I've probably had some sort of like bastardized American version of it, you know, that came in a dory chicken.
- 18:43SPEAKER_06: Came in a package.
- 18:45SPEAKER_06: Came in a little packet.
- 18:46SPEAKER_02: Yeah.

- 31:02SPEAKER_02: From now on, that's what I'm gonna call you.
- 31:04SPEAKER_06: Yeah, I well, you know, historically throughout history, women weren't allowed to do a lot of things, but also they did it anyway.
- 31:10SPEAKER_06: You know, they hid their identity or you know, they lived in an area where they had the privilege to get away with it.
- 31:15SPEAKER_02: So I don't know how if we got all the passivity out when we talked about the fact that Phil wouldn't let her perform when they were there.
- 31:26SPEAKER_02: That he she had to give it up.
- 31:28SPEAKER_06: Which is man, that is so sorry, this iPad is very slow and laggy.

- 32:30SPEAKER_04: And my tears dry.
- 32:33SPEAKER_04: Get on without my guide.
- 32:39SPEAKER_04: You went back to what you knew so far removed from all that we went through, and I dread and trouble track.
- 33:01SPEAKER_04: My gods are stacked, and I'll go back into black.
- 33:11SPEAKER_04: We only said goodbye with words.
- 33:15SPEAKER_04: I died a hundred times.

- 35:27SPEAKER_06: Yeah, it was a tribute to Amy Winehouse, and it's about, you know, a rather sad affair, the death of a fellow collaborator.
- 35:34SPEAKER_06: You can hear the pain in her song.
- 35:36SPEAKER_06: Also, that song, Slaps.
- 35:38SPEAKER_06: I loved that song.
- 35:39SPEAKER_02: Really?
- 35:40SPEAKER_02: Slaps.

- 35:42SPEAKER_02: I know.
- 35:43SPEAKER_02: Is that the new lingo?

- 36:04SPEAKER_06: To access the hardware and hack the mainframe.
- 36:08SPEAKER_02: Just like life.
- 36:09SPEAKER_02: Just like life.
- 36:11SPEAKER_02: Just like life, in a way.

- 36:57SPEAKER_06: Yeah, in a way it's bad girl Christmas.
- 36:58SPEAKER_02: You would fit right in.
- 37:00SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 37:01SPEAKER_06: Let me add them.
- 37:02SPEAKER_06: I'll be the new Ronnie Spector.
- 37:04SPEAKER_06: No, I'm sorry.
- 37:06SPEAKER_02: After the death of I uh Amy Wayne Winehouse, uh Ronnie Spector released her version of Winehouse single, which we just played, and I think I that's dang it, I I repeated.
- 37:17SPEAKER_06: Well, it's yeah, it's yeah.
- 37:19SPEAKER_02: This is what happens when you get old and cranky.
- 37:22SPEAKER_02: I'm not too cranky today, though, am I?
- 37:24SPEAKER_06: No, you're fine.
- 37:25SPEAKER_06: You're as cranky as me.
- 37:26SPEAKER_02: Okay, good.
- 37:28SPEAKER_02: Well, you're not.
- 37:29SPEAKER_02: Um let's see.
- 37:32SPEAKER_02: Uh she also she did a deck for a benefit, a tribute benefit for the uh Dayton Village Addiction Treatment Centers.
- 37:41SPEAKER_02: She also performed this song as part of her live act, including uh in 2015 during a UK tour, she appeared on the 2014 New Year's Eve edition of Jules.
- 37:54SPEAKER_02: That's I guess that's it.
- 37:55SPEAKER_02: J O O L S.
- 37:57SPEAKER_02: Jules?
- 37:57SPEAKER_02: Jules?
- 37:58SPEAKER_06: J-O-O-L-S.
- 38:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 38:00SPEAKER_02: Annual Jules Is it Jules?
- 38:05SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 38:06SPEAKER_02: I love the best part is it's just Hootin Nanny.
- 38:08SPEAKER_06: Jules Hoot and Nanny.
- 38:10SPEAKER_06: I am so embarrassed.
- 38:12SPEAKER_06: Maybe it's supposed to be Jules.
- 38:14SPEAKER_02: All of this.
- 38:15SPEAKER_06: You didn't?
- 38:16SPEAKER_02: No.
- 38:16SPEAKER_06: I didn't, and I don't feel bad about it for a second.
- 38:19SPEAKER_06: Yeah, but I'm learning about it now.
- 38:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah, well, me too.
- 38:22SPEAKER_06: Every day is a new day.
- 38:23SPEAKER_02: You can teach an old dog new tricks.
- 38:25SPEAKER_02: The problem with the old dog is will he remember those tricks?
- 38:29SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 38:29SPEAKER_02: Uh that's the main problem.
- 38:31SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 38:31SPEAKER_02: Alright, well listen, let's play another one, and uh then I want to talk about her personal life and her death.
- 38:37SPEAKER_02: Um and then we'll just kind of go from there because actually we just have time to play one and then we gotta go to commercial break.
- 38:43SPEAKER_02: So that's your that's your uh cue, my little engineer today.
- 38:48SPEAKER_02: Um play a song, uh a Raw Nat song, or I don't care, uh Spectre song, and then go to commercial break.
- 38:57SPEAKER_02: I sure will.
- 38:58SPEAKER_02: Number two.
- 38:59SPEAKER_02: No, I don't have to go number two.
- 39:01SPEAKER_06: This is the one that this is gonna be the um crossover she did with the misfits.
- 39:06SPEAKER_02: Okay, sounds good.
- 39:23SPEAKER_04: So we're gonna have some.
- 42:05SPEAKER_02: Do you want me to read it?
- 42:06SPEAKER_02: In New York City, yeah.
- 42:08SPEAKER_06: New York City, after leaving a room they had booked.
- 42:10SPEAKER_06: She was allowed to call Spector, who threatened the hotel, and then they allowed her to leave.
- 42:15SPEAKER_06: After Spectre divorced his wife in 1965, he purchased a home in Beverly Hills, where he lived with Bennett.
- 42:21SPEAKER_06: They married at Beverly Hills City Hall on April 14th, 1968.
- 42:25SPEAKER_06: Bennett changed her surname and became known as Ronnie Specter.
- 42:27SPEAKER_06: Their son Dante Phillip was adopted in 1969.
- 42:30SPEAKER_06: Two years later, Phil surprised her for Christmas with adopted twins Lewis and Gary.
- 42:34SPEAKER_06: Okay.
- 42:34SPEAKER_06: Merry Christmas, honey.
- 42:36SPEAKER_06: Here's your present.
- 42:37SPEAKER_06: Babies.
- 42:39SPEAKER_06: Interesting.
- 42:40SPEAKER_06: So they didn't get together on like a very good note.
- 42:44SPEAKER_02: No, and it goes on to say a couple of other things in there that weren't very pleasant either.
- 42:48SPEAKER_06: The Spectre revealed in her 1990 memoir, Be My Baby, that following their marriage, Phil subjected her to years of psychological torment and sabotaged her career by forbidding her to perform.
- 42:58SPEAKER_06: I mean, somebody as insecure as Phil Spectre.
- 43:01SPEAKER_06: He not only is a murderer, but he's just an abuser, it sounds like she said he surrounded their house with barbed wire and dogs.
- 43:08SPEAKER_06: Okay, this is getting cartoonish, and confiscated her shoes to prevent her from leaving.
- 43:12SPEAKER_06: On the rare occasions he allowed her out alone, she had to drive with a life-size dummy of Phil.
- 43:18SPEAKER_06: Weird.
- 43:21SPEAKER_06: Specter stated that Phil installed a gold coffin with a glass top in the basement.
- 43:26SPEAKER_06: Oh my god, promising he would kill her and display her corpse if she ever left him.
- 43:31SPEAKER_02: Alright, so she left the house barefoot, too.
- 43:35SPEAKER_02: Good for her.
- 43:36SPEAKER_02: She broke out of the house.
- 43:37SPEAKER_02: I saw that scene.
- 43:38SPEAKER_06: In 1972, Spectre fled their mansion barefoot and without any belongings with the help of her mother.
- 43:43SPEAKER_06: I knew that if I didn't leave, I was going to die there.
- 43:46SPEAKER_06: She said, Yeah, the gold coffin would have worried me that I was gonna die.
- 43:49SPEAKER_02: What was your first clue?
- 43:51SPEAKER_06: Poor girl, though.
- 43:52SPEAKER_06: I mean, when you're he I'm sure he was a really powerful person in the music industry too.
- 43:56SPEAKER_06: Well, absolutely.
- 43:57SPEAKER_06: And definitely in a time where people probably weren't taking women's concerns as seriously as they should be.
- 44:02SPEAKER_06: She probably didn't have a lot of options, but to lie low until she could escape.
- 44:08unknown: Yeah.
- 44:09SPEAKER_06: Thank goodness she eventually got out, and her legacy lives on forever.
- 44:13SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 44:14SPEAKER_06: Like, because what's Phil Spector's legacy?
- 44:16SPEAKER_06: Frizzy Turtleman.
- 44:18SPEAKER_06: Frizzy Turtle Turtleman.
- 44:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah, Frizy I don't know.
- 44:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I liked it.
- 44:23SPEAKER_02: Alright, well, let's play another song.
- 44:25SPEAKER_02: You got it.
- 44:25SPEAKER_02: What do you got over there?
- 44:26SPEAKER_02: I mean, I'm gonna let you do your pick.
- 44:28SPEAKER_02: I I it really doesn't matter to me.
- 44:30SPEAKER_02: I I'm really I I'm somewhat embarrassed, but I'm glad to that I'm getting a little bit of an education.
- 44:37SPEAKER_06: Oh, you know, now's better than never, and it's a good way to celebrate her life.
- 44:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's what I'm thinking too.
- 44:41SPEAKER_02: I and I and I just wish I'd have got to know her better uh earlier in life.
- 44:47SPEAKER_06: Yeah, there's always that sort of thing.
- 44:48SPEAKER_02: I always like the Ronette's.
- 44:49SPEAKER_02: I mean I love the Ron Edge.
- 44:51SPEAKER_06: Oh yeah.
- 44:51SPEAKER_06: Who didn't?
- 44:52SPEAKER_06: And then there you go.
- 44:53SPEAKER_06: Isn't that the big biggest plus of all for her life is that she's just in American culture now.
- 44:59SPEAKER_06: Absolutely.
- 45:02SPEAKER_06: Everybody knows that song.
- 45:03SPEAKER_06: Everybody.
- 45:04SPEAKER_06: Everybody knows the Eddie Money.
- 45:05SPEAKER_02: Everybody you know it pretty well.
- 45:07SPEAKER_06: And she was doing, of course.
- 45:08SPEAKER_06: Because I'm an American girl.
- 45:10SPEAKER_06: Just like Ronnie.
- 45:12SPEAKER_06: And I was gonna.
- 45:13SPEAKER_06: We should end it on a high note, so I thought ending it with the raw net.
- 45:16SPEAKER_02: Well, we got time for a couple of songs, so let's yeah, let's do let's do uh best part of breaking up.
- 45:20SPEAKER_04: Oh baby when we break up from a flop for my way too much, and hold you all to me, baby.
- 48:08unknown: Come on, baby.
- 48:09SPEAKER_02: Come on, baby.
- 48:10SPEAKER_02: Come on, baby.
- 48:11SPEAKER_02: Come on, baby.
- 48:12SPEAKER_02: You know, she uh died of cancer, she had cancer.
- 48:15SPEAKER_02: That's awful.
- 48:16SPEAKER_02: January twenty uh or January twelfth, twenty twenty two, at the age of seventy-eight.
- 48:21SPEAKER_06: Oof.
- 48:22SPEAKER_06: She made it pretty far.
- 48:24SPEAKER_02: She did, but she knows she's gonna live on.
- 48:26SPEAKER_02: Her her legacy will definitely uh live on.
- 48:30SPEAKER_02: And uh I'm I feel a much more enriched senior citizen.
- 48:38SPEAKER_06: Yeah, I was defending you earlier.
- 48:39SPEAKER_06: I was like, yeah, it's okay you don't know this stuff, but you are older than me.
- 48:42SPEAKER_06: What's your excuse?
- 48:43SPEAKER_02: Well you know I'm seeing and I've been in radio longer than you are old.
- 48:47SPEAKER_02: Yes, and so and I've done all these music, but I remember the wrong S, but I don't think nothing else.
- 48:53SPEAKER_06: Yeah, well then that's superstardom really, where everybody knows just a little bit about you.
- 48:59SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I guess that's probably the best.
- 49:01SPEAKER_06: Instead of just a couple of people knowing a ton of about you.
- 49:04SPEAKER_02: I I I do remember thinking what a Rurian uh her husband was.
- 49:09SPEAKER_02: It feels spectral.
- 49:10SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 49:11SPEAKER_06: I didn't yeah.
- 49:13SPEAKER_02: I always had heard he was a monster, he did horrible things, and then I think he even pulled like an OJ Simpson thing to try to get away in the like in the Bronco thing.
- 49:21SPEAKER_06: Oh my god.
- 49:22SPEAKER_06: That's what that's such a copycat.
- 49:25SPEAKER_02: Well it was number four OJ.
- 49:28SPEAKER_02: Okay, well anyway.
- 49:31SPEAKER_06: I just wanted every excuse to make fun of him.
- 49:34SPEAKER_02: OJ.
- 49:35SPEAKER_06: Of uh Phil Spector.
- 49:37SPEAKER_02: Oh, Phil?
- 49:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I don't yeah.
- 49:38SPEAKER_06: I I have no respect for but we have all respect for Ronnie Specter.
- 49:43SPEAKER_02: Absolutely, absolutely.
- 49:44SPEAKER_02: Alright, well, listen, I got some great stuff coming up on uh some of my other shows that we that I have that I produce, that you are the uh creative consultant for I run stuff by and you're like when you get on there, or oh yeah.
- 49:59SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 50:01SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna get you a stamp.
- 50:03SPEAKER_06: Just give me a sign so I don't even have to stamp.
- 50:05SPEAKER_02: There you go, that'll work too.
- 50:06SPEAKER_02: I thought maybe I'd get you like a rubber stamp and I'd hand you the paper.
- 50:09SPEAKER_06: I like that even more.
- 50:10SPEAKER_06: And then as long as you give me green and red ink.
- 50:13SPEAKER_06: Okay.
- 50:15SPEAKER_02: Wham! We can do that.
- 50:17SPEAKER_02: But uh coming up on there, we're gonna have uh uh on the uh glow-up is we're gonna have a lady that has uh survived um breast implants.
