- 1:16robots to patrol its border with Vietnam.
- 1:20UB Tech Robotics, one of China's top robot manufacturers, secured
- 1:23a $37 million contract to put its Walker S2 humanoid robots
- 1:29and border crossings in Xuanxi province.
- 1:33Deliveries began this month. The robots will guide
- 1:36travellers, conduct inspections, manage crowds and perform
- 1:40logistics work. They stand about 5 feet 9 inches
- 1:43tall, weigh about 95 kilometers, walk on 2 legs like us, and can
- 1:48work continuously because they swap their own batteries without
- 1:52human help. That last detail is super wild.
- 1:57A robot that changes its own power source in about 3 minutes
- 2:01and never needs to stop. We don't need Border Patrol
- 2:04agents anymore, right? The question is whether this is
- 2:07a glimpse of the future or a high profile experiment that
- 2:10will quietly fade when the machine struggle with the chaos
- 2:13of real world border traffic now.
- 2:17The contract was signed with the Humanoid Robot Center in Feng
- 2:20Cheng Gang, the coastal city near the Vietnam border.
- 2:23UB Tech says cumulative orders for its Walker series have
- 2:27reached ¥1.1 billion, around $157 million since shipments
- 2:32began in November. Company plans to deliver 500
- 2:35industrial humanoid robots by the end of 2025 and scale the
- 2:3910,000 units annually by 2027. Now, this is an aggressive
- 2:44production ramp. We're going to walk through what
- 2:48these robots actually do, how the battery swap system works
- 2:52and what it means for workers, and where China's humanoid
- 2:55ambitions fit in the global race against Tesla.
- 2:58Figure in other competitors and we'll get right into that after
- 3:02this very short break. Now, the Walker S2 is built for
- 3:06industrial work, not showroom demos.
- 3:09It's not run by people. It has 90 or 52° of freedom,
- 3:13which means 52 separate joints and axes where it can move.
- 3:18Now the configuration breaks down to 6° of freedom per leg, 2
- 3:22for the waist, 7 per arm, and two for the head.
- 3:26The waist can rotate 162° in either direction.
- 3:29It's 4th generation dexterous hands have 11° of freedom reach
- 3:33and enabling fine manipulation like grasping objects or
- 3:37checking seals on cargo containers.
- 3:40The hands are designed like human like dimensions and can
- 3:43perform sub millimeter precision operations.
- 3:47UV Tech says durability testing exceeds 80,000 cycles and the
- 3:52robot can lift up to 15 kilograms, about £33 per arm,
- 3:57across a workspace stretching from ground level to 1.8 meters
- 4:01high. Torque waist joints let it squat
- 4:04deep and stoop for tasks near the ground.
- 4:08It can walk around 4.5 mph, and that's a brisk walking pace for
- 4:13a human. For a bipedal robot carrying
- 4:15loads in a crowded environment, that is ambitious engineering
- 4:20and the body is constructed from aerospace grade aluminum alloy
- 4:23and carbon fiber reinforced polymer.
- 4:26The bionic arms feature a hollow structure with integrated wiring
- 4:30which enables complex coordinated movements like the
- 4:33autonomous battery swap and the robot uses dual RGB cameras at
- 4:37its head for a stereoscopic vision giving it human like
- 4:40depth perception. Additional sensors and force
- 4:45feedback system support balance in dextrous manipulation, and
- 4:48full body dynamic balancing algorithms keep the robot stable
- 4:53during movement, even when carrying heavy loads or even
- 4:56navigating uneven surfaces. Whether all of this actually
- 5:00works reliably outside of controlled factory conditions is
- 5:04a very open question in the feature drawing the most
- 5:07attention for me is the battery swap.
- 5:11The Walker S2 uses 248 Volt lithium ion battery packs that
- 5:16discharge in parallel. When walking, runtime is
- 5:19approximately 2 hours. When standing or performing
- 5:22tasks stationarily, runtime exceeds to about four plus hours
- 5:29a recharge. A full recharge without the
- 5:33battery swap takes about 90 minutes.
- 5:35But instead of waiting for the charge, the robot navigates on
- 5:39its own to a swap station. It removes the depleted battery
- 5:43with its own hands, place it is places it in a charger, then it
- 5:48grabs another battery with whatever power it has in its
- 5:52body and it installs it. The whole process takes around 3
- 5:56minutes now. A backup battery keeps the
- 5:59system running during the swap, so the robot never fully powers
- 6:03down. It's designed to run 24 hours a
- 6:08day, seven days a week continuous operation, and Ubitec
- 6:12claims the system can achieve over 98% uptime.
- 6:17Most rabbits require scheduled downtime for charging.
- 6:20This one does not. It just swaps the battery out.
- 6:22And now border crossings don't pause at night either.
- 6:25You know the robots will not pause for anything now.
- 6:32Now at the fencing gang border, the Walk Arrest 2 units will
- 6:36handle several roles. Some will guide travelers
- 6:39through queues, direct vehicle traffic and ansic basic
- 6:43questions. Think a bit like an airport
- 6:47information kiosk, except it walks around and it actually
- 6:51talks to you. And other robots will patrol
- 6:54corridors and waiting areas, watching for blocked exits or
- 6:57crowd patterns that might need human intervention.
- 7:01A third group will work in cargo lanes, checking container IDs,
- 7:05confirming seals and relaying status updates to dispatch
- 7:08centers. And the robots will also inspect
- 7:11steel, copper and aluminum facilities nearby, walking
- 7:15structured routes through industrial yards.
- 7:17The keyword in all of this is support.
- 7:20These machines are helpers. They're here to help people
- 7:24along. They don't make any decisions.
- 7:27And the humans still run the whole border.
- 7:31Now Ubtech says it's Walker S2 uses something called brain net
- 7:34two point O combined with a Co agent EI framework.
- 7:38Those are internal names for systems that handle multimodal
- 7:43reasoning, task planning, and autonomous exception handling.
- 7:47So to break it down, the robot can perceive its environment
- 7:50through cameras similar to Tesla, plan a sequence of steps
- 7:54to complete a task and adjust when something unexpected
- 7:57happens. It uses binocular stereo Vision
- 8:002 cameras working together like human eyes to judge depth and
- 8:05distance. This is how it navigates factory
- 8:07floors and crowded border halls without bumping into people or
- 8:11tripping over your luggage. Dynamic balancing algorithms
- 8:14keep it stable during movement in case it does trip even when
- 8:17carrying heavy loads. And the system runs on Ubuntu
- 8:21with Rosa 2 point O. So this is an operating system
- 8:25supporting over the air updates. UB Tech says the AI continuously
- 8:30optimizes using billions of data points accumulated from
- 8:33industrial training. This might be the year of the
- 8:36Linux of Linux here with Ubuntu in these robots.
- 8:41I mean, the the Linux desktop may be coming in robot form.
- 8:46Whether all of this works reliably in this messy world of
- 8:50humans, that's an open question now.
- 8:53This deployment fits a broader national strategy out In 2023,
- 8:58China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology issued
- 9:02guidance calling for a national innovation system around human
- 9:06robots. By 2025, the ministry opened
- 9:09consultation on a Standardization Committee, an
- 9:12expert group that writes industry rules for humanoid
- 9:14robots. Now the UB Tech founder was
- 9:17appointed vice director of that committee, alongside leaders
- 9:20from other major robotics companies like Unit Tree and
- 9:23Agbot. The Co founder of Agbot and Wang
- 9:27Zhengzheng, founder of Unit Tree, also holds seats.
- 9:30That means the companies building these robots are also
- 9:33helping write the standards they must meet.
- 9:36Imagine that Chinese officials treat humanoid robots as a
- 9:39strategic industry. The Feng Chang Gang project is a
- 9:43public test of whether the technology is ready for
- 9:47regulated high visibility environments.
- 9:50So at the border is very strict. There are certain rules you have
- 9:55to abide by and there are certain lanes that people have
- 9:58to go in. There's certain things that are
- 9:59happening now in a busy city street, things are completely
- 10:03different. Things are wild.
- 10:05And this is a test to see how these robots do in human
- 10:09environments where there's a little bit of commotion, but not
- 10:14like a city, you know? So the scale of chain is
- 10:17humanoid robot push is significant.
- 10:21UB Tech operates 2 dedicated humanoid factories, one in
- 10:25Shenzheng and another in Lezhou. I'm not exactly how to say this,
- 10:29but Guangzhi, the company says it has full stack capabilities,
- 10:34meaning it handles everything, research, manufacturing and
- 10:39sales all in one place so they don't outsource things.
- 10:43Chief Branding Officer Michael Tam told the South China Morning
- 10:46Post that UB Tech aims to reduce unit costs below $20,000 by
- 10:502030. That's what Elon Watts, the
- 10:56price for a Tesla about to be the current price is.
- 11:01It's well over $100,000 per unit today if humanoid robots cost as
- 11:06much as mid range cars instead of a luxury vehicle like a model
- 11:10S3 or a model. S sorry.
- 11:14Or I was thinking of a model 3, but a Model S and it can bring
- 11:19it down to less than a model three.
- 11:21There we go. Adoption could accelerate across
- 11:26everywhere in China. The question is whether UB tech
- 11:29can cut costs while scaling production and maintaining
- 11:32reliability of these robots. Right now Ubi tech isn't
- 11:35profitable. Even as orders grow, the company
- 11:38remains loss making. So it's like the old tech
- 11:42startup deal. You build something until you
- 11:46figure out a way to make money, right?
- 11:48You just ramp and ramp and ramp. And the global competition is
- 11:51heating up, of course. Tesla's Optimist humanoid robot
- 11:54has been in development for a few years now.
- 11:56Since 2021, Elon Musk has said that Tesla could produce
- 11:59millions of units, and that Optimist could eventually become
- 12:03the company's most valuable product.
- 12:05And he wants to start making millions of these things in a
- 12:08few years. Figure AI raised over $600
- 12:11million in 2024 and has partnered with BMW to deploy
- 12:14robots in manufacturing. Boston Dynamics continues to
- 12:18refine Atlas. Agility Robotics is testing its
- 12:21Digit robot in Amazon warehouses.
- 12:24And the difference with Ubitec is speed and deployment.
- 12:27While American companies are still running pilots and
- 12:29demonstrations, Ubitec is shipping 500 industrial humanoid
- 12:33robots this year. It planning for 10,000 by 2027.
- 12:40If Elon actually ships a million robots in the next 5 years, UB
- 12:45tech is in trouble. Whether speed translates to
- 12:47reliability remains to be seen with UB tech, but they are ahead
- 12:51of Tesla right now. So China is beating America in
- 12:54this and the implications for workers are in peril.
- 12:58Border crossings employ a lot of people, thousands of people.
- 13:03Automations that handle crowd management, logistics and
- 13:06routine inspections could either get these people laid off or
- 13:10fired, or just shift their job responsibilities to something
- 13:13else. And Ubi tech frames the robots
- 13:16as helpers. That human staff could be freed
- 13:19up for more higher level work. Now there could be job
- 13:24displacement. Surveillance is a problem, and
- 13:28accountability when machines make those mistakes.
- 13:30Like who's in charge? The significant change is
- 13:35continuous operation. There's no downtime.
- 13:38Machines that work non-stop raise questions about what
- 13:41happens to the workers who used to cover the night shifts.
- 13:44Those are the people that were doing the hard work.
- 13:48You do the night shift, you start late, you end early in the
- 13:52morning, sleep all day, do it again.
- 13:55But what are you going to do? Because those shifts are going
- 13:58to be taken over by a robot. There aren't that many nice
- 14:01shifts anymore. Now, rescaling programs in
- 14:04hybrid models that combine human and robotic labor will be part
- 14:08of the future. That's what happens when any
- 14:11industry gets disrupted. What are these rescaling
- 14:14programs? How can you make yourself
- 14:16valuable? Anybody that's in a program
- 14:19right now that you know that you do very minimal physical labor
- 14:25but also very minimal mind labor, you will eventually be
- 14:32replaced by a robot. The AI is coming for your jobs,
- 14:37and I'm not joking. I think it's true.
- 14:40The way that these robotics companies are getting funded is
- 14:43like early stage web companies when I was around at the
- 14:49beginning of the Internet and all of our companies got funded
- 14:53out the roof. I have sold numerous companies
- 14:58to other startups and they just scooped us all up because it was
- 15:03just you get all the information you can, get all the data you
- 15:06can and get all those people that are talented into your crew
- 15:10and then you get rid of the people that aren't doing the
- 15:13high value tasks. So anybody that's listening
- 15:19right now and thinks that they're going to be OK, please
- 15:23think about it again because there's the way that they will
- 15:27be able to replace you with a robot or with some AI.
- 15:30Most of the front end web development jobs that were low
- 15:34end, even that, I mean, it's just that was my old industry,
- 15:37front end web development. I do video production now for
- 15:39social media and marketing and all the front end developers
- 15:43that I know, if they're not senior level, are in real rough
- 15:49shape. They have gotten their jobs
- 15:51taken away. AI can create a website for you.
- 15:54Front end, beautiful front end designed in matter of minutes.
- 16:00I actually created 1 today, and I was just goofing off, and I
- 16:06created a site that would have taken a team of five to 10
- 16:11people about 5 or 6 months five years ago, and I did it within
- 16:19minutes. So the technology is going to
- 16:22replace you. Now.
- 16:24If this pilot succeeds, similar deployments could be at
- 16:29airports, seaports or train stations across China.
- 16:31So next time you travel to China, watch out for these
- 16:33robots. Other countries are going to be
- 16:36next. The global market for humanoid
- 16:38robots in industrial and public service applications is
- 16:42projected to grow rapidly through the end of the decade.
- 16:44So if you want a stable job in the future, get into robotics if
- 16:49you're technically a client. Companies in the US, Europe and
- 16:54Japan are accelerating development because they're
- 16:58going to fall behind if they don't catch up with China.
- 17:01Ubitec's Walker S2 deployment is a transition from controlled
- 17:06factory environments to unpredictable field operations.
- 17:10Border crossings are crowded, noisy, and full of unexpected
- 17:14weird people. Schedules are tight in
- 17:17inspections cannot easily stop. You got to keep going if the
- 17:20robots handle that environment reliably.
- 17:23If they can figure this out, it'll strengthen the case for
- 17:26humanoid robots in other complex public settings like police,
- 17:31public service, things like that.
- 17:34Fire departments can be replaced too, by robots.
- 17:37Why would you, why would you risk a person when you can have
- 17:41a robot? And I know it's a, it's a long
- 17:45shot here. Why would you hurt a person when
- 17:50a robot could do the job and not worry about getting, you know,
- 17:54killed on the job? It's just a no brainer.
- 17:57Fire departments are going to be replaced by robots police, some,
- 18:02I think crowd control type stuff, yes, but other police
- 18:05know. But yeah, I think it's going to
- 18:09be a matter of time, You know, like taxi drivers, of course
- 18:12they're they're going to be replaced by by robot cars.
- 18:16It's going to be it's going to be all over the place.
- 18:18But now if this fails, the Ubtec, Ubtec Walker S2
- 18:25deployment fails, it'll reinforced the fact that there's
- 18:31still a gap between demos and real world performance because
- 18:35real world performance right now is in a very small sections of
- 18:39warehouses in manufacturing facilities.
- 18:43There aren't that many that are performing in public right now
- 18:48without people behind the behind the the glass controlling them.
- 18:56So either way, this is a huge moment for the robotics
- 19:01industry, and it's going to change how things are perceived
- 19:06in the future. I think robots are cool.
- 19:08I think they have a place. We already have robots all over
- 19:12the place, you know, you just don't know it.
- 19:14Like your kiosk when you order food, someplace like that's a
- 19:17robot. It's all a robot.
- 19:19They're not humanoid robots, mind you.
- 19:22But everything you're using right now, your phone, it's a
- 19:24little robot. Your computer, it's kind of a
- 19:26robot, but anything with mechanical parts and some AI in
- 19:31it, think of that as you know, he already used this technology.
- 19:36Anything that you interact with in real life with your body and
- 19:39your hands. Maybe it doesn't walk, maybe it
- 19:41doesn't talk, maybe it doesn't hand you things or have hands,
- 19:45But we're already interacting with some of this technology is
- 19:48just going to develop into something that's going to be
- 19:52more humanoid in the future. So my warning to you is to be
- 19:58careful with your jobs because you could get them taken by a
- 20:02humanoid robot in the next five years or before, depending on if
