- 0:53Speaker 2: We're trying to ascertain with Justin Norvin. But I said, yes,
- 0:57Speaker 2: you failed the stat bank. Oh yeah, yeah right there,
- 1:01Speaker 2: right there, yeah, yeah right. I could have a little
- 1:06Speaker 2: bit of a The only time I saw a CDC
- 1:09Speaker 2: in concert, I saw him with a song with Paul Alexander.
- 1:15Speaker 2: We were at work and we were that was in
- 1:18Speaker 2: our still in our suit and tie days and we
- 1:21Speaker 2: were at Ducane Profession University in our suit and time,
- 1:26Speaker 2: and they were playing over at the arena. We were
- 1:28Speaker 2: in the basketball games. We left the basketball game, hustled down,
- 1:31Speaker 2: didn't miss any of the concert, didn't really oh, this
- 1:35Speaker 2: had to be twenty ten or something. Didn't really know
- 1:38Speaker 2: what to expect at a c DC. You know, they
- 1:42Speaker 2: they give off this image of being this kind of
- 1:45Speaker 2: sloppy party band. I mean, their lead singer died, you know,
- 1:49Speaker 2: Bond Scott, I think, drinking too much or whatever.
- 1:52Speaker 3: So they were incredible, unbelievably tight and just I mean,
- 1:59Speaker 3: I'm a I'm a fan of a c DC's always
- 2:01Speaker 3: been a fan of a c DC.
- 2:02Speaker 2: But you never know what you're gonna see from somebody live.
- 2:04Speaker 2: Some day, you see somebody live in concert and you're like,
- 2:06Speaker 2: it's a bit of a disappointed.
- 2:07Speaker 4: Yeah, the studio album absolutely well, I think a lot
- 2:10Speaker 4: of And then you know, normally we get usually a
- 2:13Speaker 4: preseason game or two where at PNC Park, Right, they
- 2:17Speaker 4: have kind of that kind of ode to the eighties
- 2:19Speaker 4: type of bands that come in and play and play there,
- 2:22Speaker 4: so you know, you kind of see some of the
- 2:24Speaker 4: remnants of the fans of those bands looks worse, but
- 2:29Speaker 4: the band is amazing, Right, I come around out there
- 2:32Speaker 4: and yeah, I'm the same thing I'm a fan.
- 2:34Speaker 5: You know.
- 2:35Speaker 2: T and T was was probably the song that played
- 2:37Speaker 2: in high.
- 2:37Speaker 4: School in the genez That was the that was the
- 2:39Speaker 4: ultimate lifting song, along with like Metallica and of course
- 2:42Speaker 4: you're throwing like Thunderstruck.
- 2:43Speaker 2: And Back in Black.
- 2:44Speaker 4: Yeah, Back in Black is is still one of those
- 2:47Speaker 4: down dann own Yeah, you know, and and even well
- 2:52Speaker 4: and also the iron Man, right, iron Man, the Flash
- 2:55Speaker 4: iron Man, Well, no, no, no, I'm saying the movie iron Man.
- 2:59Speaker 2: Okay, totally.
- 3:00Speaker 4: They played a c DC throughout that and kind of
- 3:02Speaker 4: gave them a little resurgence because everything was kind of
- 3:06Speaker 4: a c DC themed. On the first Robert Downey Junior,
- 3:09Speaker 4: John Favreau U Crack at the MCU they played the
- 3:13Speaker 4: A C D C was the theme there.
- 3:15Speaker 2: So my wife found somehow an old video. Okay, we'll
- 3:20Speaker 2: get back to foot on a minute, but yeah, you
- 3:21Speaker 2: found an old video of Bond Scott singing I was
- 3:26Speaker 2: it was. He was in a band, in Australian band,
- 3:28Speaker 2: of course, and they did an R and B cover
- 3:32Speaker 2: and he was the lead singer. And you know this
- 3:35Speaker 2: guy who sang T kind of had a sweet voice.
- 3:40Speaker 2: You look at him like, oh, it's clearly Bond Scott.
- 3:43Speaker 2: I was like dance like a voice of It was
- 3:46Speaker 2: like you look at will Farell Stepper. It was like
- 3:47Speaker 2: mixed between Fergie and Jesus.
- 3:49Speaker 4: Yeah, where's this angelic voice that you hear this kind
- 3:52Speaker 4: of raspy, loud, tweaking voice in ac DC.
- 3:56Speaker 2: Yeah, it might have been. It must have been right
- 3:57Speaker 2: before he ate a cart and a sandpaper. So, you know,
- 4:03Speaker 2: we we talked about this just at the end of
- 4:05Speaker 2: the last segment when you're wrapping up the Ring of Honor,
- 4:07Speaker 2: that we wanted to talk about the tight end position.
- 4:09Speaker 2: And so let's hear first Mike McCarthy talking about Robert
- 4:16Speaker 2: Tanyan from this morning's press conference, a guy who played
- 4:19Speaker 2: for Mike McCarthy and with Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay
- 4:23Speaker 2: at the tight end position. What tracking you to Tanyan
- 4:26Speaker 2: to bring him?
- 4:26Speaker 6: How's he How's he helps some of the young quarterbacks?
- 4:28Speaker 6: He seems to be a security blend with them already.
- 4:31Speaker 7: Roberts a hell of a player. You know, just haven't
- 4:33Speaker 7: been around him as a rookie, so and just I've
- 4:36Speaker 7: always watched his career, you know, after my time with
- 4:40Speaker 7: him in Green Bay. But you know, he's you know
- 4:43Speaker 7: he had it right away. You know, a very instinctive player.
- 4:46Speaker 7: You know, he's very very natural in the past game.
- 4:49Speaker 7: You can see the particularly how he attacks them. You know,
- 4:51Speaker 7: the middle reads, the post routes, you know, the alley routes,
- 4:54Speaker 7: and and you know so much of that is uh
- 4:58Speaker 7: is about, you know, the timing, the body, the body language,
- 5:01Speaker 7: you know, in tune with the clock of the quarterback.
- 5:03Speaker 7: So no, I think we're extremely fortunate to have Robert here, Bobby.
- 5:09Speaker 7: I think the guys like to call him, but he's
- 5:12Speaker 7: you know, he's a really good fit for how we.
- 5:14Speaker 2: Want to play. And that's the big question, how do
- 5:18Speaker 2: you want to play? So last year three tight end sets,
- 5:23Speaker 2: four tight end sets, I believe more, you know, Matt
- 5:27Speaker 2: Williamson's always very good at these kind of things. More
- 5:31Speaker 2: three tight end sets, I believe than any team in
- 5:33Speaker 2: the NFL.
- 5:34Speaker 4: Yeah, we led the way in thirteen personnel. And I
- 5:38Speaker 4: think for Robert Tanyan, he has a place in this offense.
- 5:41Speaker 4: Right If you are going to run the football, if
- 5:43Speaker 4: you are going to be physical at the point, you're
- 5:45Speaker 4: going to need that veteran. And this is a guy
- 5:48Speaker 4: Mike McCarthy drafted in Green Bay. Of course, you know,
- 5:51Speaker 4: left the team the year after, but like you said,
- 5:53Speaker 4: played with Aaron Rodgers for a number of years after
- 5:56Speaker 4: going into his ninth season here in the NFL, and.
- 6:00Speaker 2: He just brings that sturdy, veteran presence in that room.
- 6:03Speaker 4: I know, listen, I know Pat Friedland's been here five
- 6:06Speaker 4: years going on year six, right, deren Old Washington has
- 6:09Speaker 4: now been here going on his third year. But Robert
- 6:12Speaker 4: Tynan's going on his ninth year. And he is a
- 6:15Speaker 4: football player, and you need those professional guys scattered throughout
- 6:20Speaker 4: your team, and he's another guy that can kind of
- 6:22Speaker 4: read through the minutia. He's been through a Mike McCarthy
- 6:25Speaker 4: training camp, He's played with Aaron, so he.
- 6:28Speaker 2: Has familiarity with Aaron.
- 6:30Speaker 4: And I want to say, I want to say, I
- 6:31Speaker 4: think his last year there up in Green Bay Aaron
- 6:34Speaker 4: or one of Aaron's.
- 6:36Speaker 2: MVP seasons.
- 6:38Speaker 4: You know, Robert Tanian had fifty two catches and eleven
- 6:40Speaker 4: touchdowns with Aaron. So this is a guy who is
- 6:45Speaker 4: a legitimate red zone threat. Maybe not as much as
- 6:48Speaker 4: he was in that year now because he's years older,
- 6:51Speaker 4: had a couple of injuries, but he has that on
- 6:55Speaker 4: his resume he's done it, so maybe he could bring
- 6:58Speaker 4: along even more a Darnel Washington. Maybe he can help
- 7:01Speaker 4: refine a Pat Friarm with a little bit more and
- 7:03Speaker 4: it brings another veteran into that room and gives that
- 7:07Speaker 4: room a little bit more meatiness to that to that
- 7:11Speaker 4: position group and one that you know looks you know
- 7:15Speaker 4: for Allington's purpose is it's a deep group. I mean,
- 7:17Speaker 4: I think we have what seven tight ends on the
- 7:18Speaker 4: roster right now, so we have a lot of guys there,
- 7:22Speaker 4: but he's one that looks like a guy that fills
- 7:24Speaker 4: in and if you because you're going to carry three
- 7:27Speaker 4: tight ends because you're gonna run in a minimum two
- 7:29Speaker 4: tight ends sets, so you're always gonna need that third guy.
- 7:32Speaker 2: And I think he just he fits thing good with that.
- 7:34Speaker 4: You know, he gives you the John new Smith experience level,
- 7:38Speaker 4: but I think he has a little bit more gridience
- 7:40Speaker 4: because I think he's a better you know, down blocker
- 7:43Speaker 4: in a three point stance, so he gives you nice
- 7:45Speaker 4: edge presents for your tackles, but can also run the
- 7:48Speaker 4: entire route tree.
- 7:49Speaker 2: So you know what happened last year with the four
- 7:52Speaker 2: tight ends, that's not gonna happen this year, I don't.
- 7:55Speaker 2: So two guys are gone and by the way, so
- 7:58Speaker 2: eleven personnel, which it would be one tight end. Mike
- 8:02Speaker 2: McCarthy's last year in Dallas, I think they ran in
- 8:04Speaker 2: something like seventy percent of the time, up among the most,
- 8:07Speaker 2: maybe the most, but up among the most in the NFL.
- 8:10Speaker 2: Of the Steelers did it, I think maybe the.
- 8:13Speaker 4: Least last year, I think thirty percent something like that.
- 8:15Speaker 2: I think, very very low.
- 8:17Speaker 4: It was like us in like Seattle, yeah, or like
- 8:20Speaker 4: the bottom of it was it was an eleven personnel.
- 8:22Speaker 2: Yeah, it was very low. So and I don't I
- 8:25Speaker 2: don't know the exact figures, but it's it's clearly, you know,
- 8:28Speaker 2: a complete and different change. So you wonder, well, how
- 8:32Speaker 2: are this Steelers going to value the tight end position? Right?
- 8:35Speaker 2: You have Pat Fryerman who was signed to a contract
- 8:37Speaker 2: extension before Mike McCarthy got here, but it's a contract
- 8:40Speaker 2: extension was really underutilized compared to what he had in
- 8:45Speaker 2: his first several seasons. You could pretty much, you know,
- 8:49Speaker 2: know that the male is going to be delivered, right, Yeah,
- 8:52Speaker 2: you know it's gonna snow around around Christmas and Pat
- 8:56Speaker 2: firom was gonna have sixty catches, right, Well, that didn't
- 8:58Speaker 2: happen last year. No, it didn't. So I think that
- 9:02Speaker 2: you know, how is this position going to be valued? Well,
- 9:04Speaker 2: you don't know. And then they signed Darnolt Washington to
- 9:07Speaker 2: extend to a contract extension. You say, wait a minute, now, okay,
- 9:10Speaker 2: so what does that mean? And don't I don't know?
- 9:16Speaker 2: First of all, what do you think that means? Don't
- 9:18Speaker 2: mean anything other than you just signed a good football
- 9:20Speaker 2: player and you know you're gonna have two tight ends
- 9:22Speaker 2: and they're gonna use utilize them. There's gonna be some
- 9:25Speaker 2: twelve personnel stuff out there, for sure.
- 9:27Speaker 4: Yeah, I think you have to say it's going to
- 9:30Speaker 4: be more twelve personnel over thirteen for sure.
- 9:33Speaker 2: And I don't sure.
- 9:34Speaker 4: And I don't think you get to the amount of
- 9:37Speaker 4: eleven as he did down in Dallas because I think
- 9:40Speaker 4: your division also dictates what you can and can't do.
- 9:44Speaker 4: And in Dallas, when you look at the NFC East,
- 9:47Speaker 4: it is a lot more spread, It is a lot
- 9:49Speaker 4: more differing style of guys where you need to deploy
- 9:52Speaker 4: three wide receivers around the field because you have such
- 9:55Speaker 4: a good pass rush and the defensive Lineman and the
- 9:57Speaker 4: NFC East.
- 9:58Speaker 2: I think when you come to the AFC North, you
- 9:59Speaker 2: know you you got.
- 10:00Speaker 4: To be able to run that football, right, and twelve
- 10:02Speaker 4: personnel is your best way of getting that.
- 10:04Speaker 2: And I mean we got to fullback on the roster.
- 10:06Speaker 4: So does that look like twenty one personnel over twelve
- 10:08Speaker 4: which means two backs, one tight end, right, But and
- 10:11Speaker 4: twelve personnel one tight end to one running back, two
- 10:15Speaker 4: tight ends, so you know how you get to that,
- 10:18Speaker 4: I think is another way. But you always got to
- 10:19Speaker 4: have a third in that case, if you're going to
- 10:21Speaker 4: use a lot of two tight end sets, you need
- 10:23Speaker 4: to have a third.
- 10:23Speaker 2: One available to you. So that's why I think you
- 10:25Speaker 2: keep three.
- 10:26Speaker 4: But I don't see thirteen personnel being a primary running
- 10:29Speaker 4: group or anything like we ran thirteen out of almost
- 10:32Speaker 4: necessity to be able to move the football. Yes, whereas
- 10:36Speaker 4: I don't think that's going to be a problem here
- 10:37Speaker 4: when you look at the line and you look at
- 10:39Speaker 4: the growth of this and also the emphasis on offense.
- 10:41Speaker 2: And look at the receiver core you have now as
- 10:44Speaker 2: opposed to a year ago, Yeah, completely different. You don't
- 10:46Speaker 2: spend a you know, you don't trade for Michael Pittman
- 10:49Speaker 2: and then spend a second round pick on Jeremy Bernard
- 10:53Speaker 2: and still have Roman Wilson and think we're going to
- 10:55Speaker 2: run a lot of thirteen personnel exactly. So you know,
- 10:58Speaker 2: again we're using a lot of tominisms until we get
- 11:00Speaker 2: our full range of mccarthyisms, yes, but still working on those.
- 11:04Speaker 2: You know, if you have red paint, paint the barn red.
- 11:07Speaker 2: So you know, I think that Arthur Smith wanted to
- 11:10Speaker 2: play that big personnel, but they also they also went
- 11:14Speaker 2: with what they had. So but then in the off
- 11:16Speaker 2: season Johnny Smith gone, Connor Hayward gone. Those are other
- 11:21Speaker 2: two tight ends and Connor more of an H back
- 11:23Speaker 2: type of guy, could play some in line, but you
- 11:25Speaker 2: really wanted him more of an H back, or maybe
- 11:27Speaker 2: somebody wanted him wing in motion, right field, right, those
- 11:30Speaker 2: sort of things, and you've got to You've drafted a
- 11:32Speaker 2: full back and Rithy Nykowski who might be able to
- 11:35Speaker 2: take some of that role. But you know, you go
- 11:38Speaker 2: from well, we're not going to run a lot of
- 11:41Speaker 2: thirteen personnel. By the same token, you're not going to
- 11:45Speaker 2: have two tight ends on your roster. You're going to
- 11:47Speaker 2: have three tight ends on your roster, and I don't
- 11:49Speaker 2: think they'll have four. I think they'll have three. So
- 11:52Speaker 2: you know, you're looking at young guys like JJ Galbreth
- 11:55Speaker 2: who turned some heads last year in camp with his
- 11:57Speaker 2: pass catching ability. You bring in jaem Bell, you're bringing
- 12:00Speaker 2: Lake McCree. Then you're bringing Robert Tanyan, and I think
- 12:03Speaker 2: the feeling is barring injury. Aha, that's the guy.
- 12:07Speaker 4: Well, and you brought him in at mini camp, so
- 12:09Speaker 4: he wasn't there in OTAs, he wasn't here early free agency.
- 12:14Speaker 4: This was kind of like we looked at what we
- 12:16Speaker 4: had and we needed more. So, yeah, you're right, you think, okay,
- 12:21Speaker 4: if all works out, he stays healthy, things go as planned,
- 12:26Speaker 4: that you add a Robert Tanyanto this group, and that
- 12:28Speaker 4: was the missing piece to round out the tight end
- 12:32Speaker 4: pie of the equation.
- 12:34Speaker 2: Right, and then the other guys maybe, you know, barring
- 12:37Speaker 2: injury again, it's always the caveat of barring injury. You know,
- 12:40Speaker 2: can find themselves maybe in developmental roles. By themselves on
- 12:43Speaker 2: the practice squad. We can make a decent living and
- 12:47Speaker 2: pretty solid living and also develop, yeah, develop into a
- 12:50Speaker 2: player that you know, maybe you're the next Dylan Cook.
- 12:53Speaker 2: Maybe you know, James Pierre is a little different. A
- 12:55Speaker 2: veteran guy went in the practice squad, but you know
- 12:58Speaker 2: those are those are and I would think that that
- 13:01Speaker 2: would have to be some motivation and sending for you. Yes,
- 13:05Speaker 2: you're gonna be disappointed if you don't make this roster.
- 13:08Speaker 2: You know, No, you wouldn't rather be on the practice
- 13:10Speaker 2: squad than the fifty three. Maybe rather be on the
- 13:14Speaker 2: practice squad than have a real job, first of all.
- 13:16Speaker 2: And secondly, that practice squad job could turn into you
- 13:19Speaker 2: being the next Dylan Cook, or you being the next
- 13:22Speaker 2: James Pierre, or an injury happens and you have to
- 13:24Speaker 2: get elevated.
- 13:26Speaker 4: You're already in the system, and then maybe when you
- 13:28Speaker 4: get up you don't move back. That's right, right, So
- 13:30Speaker 4: I mean you just need to create the pathway in
- 13:33Speaker 4: the avenue, right, And I think that's how you kind
- 13:36Speaker 4: of have to look at it at positions like this
- 13:38Speaker 4: where it's a very niche position. Right, there's only three
- 13:41Speaker 4: guys that are going to be on this roster and
- 13:44Speaker 4: there's seven guys in the room. You know, it's like,
- 13:47Speaker 4: you know, you say, don't count the numbers, just play
- 13:49Speaker 4: your game, But at some point you have to be. Okay,
- 13:53Speaker 4: can I be the next Robert Tanya next year?
- 13:57Speaker 2: Right? Can that third tight end?
- 13:58Speaker 4: Or can I be a guy that compliments Pat Fryarmouth
- 14:02Speaker 4: or Darnell Washington?
- 14:03Speaker 2: Right? Can my skills grow a little bit more?
- 14:05Speaker 4: Maybe I need to do a little bit more BLOCKI
- 14:07Speaker 4: or maybe I need to get a little bit better
- 14:08Speaker 4: at my route tree and understanding those complications that.
- 14:11Speaker 2: Come with it.
- 14:12Speaker 4: But there's gonna be something that you can glean that
- 14:14Speaker 4: you can do better. And I'd rather do it better
- 14:17Speaker 4: sitting on a practice squad in the classroom every day
- 14:20Speaker 4: with everybody versus trying to figure it out at home
- 14:23Speaker 4: and having, like you said, having.
- 14:24Speaker 2: A clock in every day. Well, the other thing is too,
- 14:27Speaker 2: is that, I mean, take it one step further. If
- 14:29Speaker 2: you're out on this field, you can be the next
- 14:34Speaker 2: James Harrison. You can be the next Willie Parker. You
- 14:37Speaker 2: can be a guy where're like, Okay, you're making the roster.
- 14:40Speaker 2: And of course took James a while, but you're making
- 14:43Speaker 2: the roster because we are you know, we have left
- 14:48Speaker 2: ourselves open to keeping those kinds of players. We talked
- 14:51Speaker 2: about this yesterday that the the you know, you don't
- 14:57Speaker 2: have to play CYA. When you're the Steelers, you don't
- 15:01Speaker 2: have to go to the coaching staff and say, hey, listen, no,
- 15:03Speaker 2: he spent a high draft pick in this kid. Can
- 15:05Speaker 2: you keep him around a little bit? And look, you
- 15:07Speaker 2: always drafted somebody because you believe in him. But maybe
- 15:10Speaker 2: you just the coach who's hired by that gentlem manager says,
- 15:13Speaker 2: okay that for optics, we'll keep that guy, will carry
- 15:15Speaker 2: that guy. And now maybe that undrafted guy doesn't get
- 15:18Speaker 2: the opportunity. I mean, think about we're talking about Hall
- 15:21Speaker 2: of Honor, you know, think about Willie Parker, right, he
- 15:24Speaker 2: didn't really get the opportunity in North Carolina, and now
- 15:27Speaker 2: he's an undrafted guy on another team. Is he squeezed
- 15:30Speaker 2: off the roster perhaps as opposed to being a Hall
- 15:32Speaker 2: of Honor member like he is and his super Bowl
- 15:35Speaker 2: hero like he is his rookie year, right, he was,
- 15:37Speaker 2: because look who you had in the backfield. You had
- 15:39Speaker 2: jer Own Bettis, you brought over a Duce Daly, and
- 15:43Speaker 2: then you still also had oh gosh from Georgia, one
- 15:46Speaker 2: of my teammates.
- 15:48Speaker 4: Ron Haynes, that was already on there, and we still
- 15:51Speaker 4: carried a fullback. So yeah, Dan Kreider, so righter does
- 15:54Speaker 4: the fifth back fit in this he was on practice squad.
- 15:58Speaker 4: And then what happens the next next year, Hey, we
- 16:01Speaker 4: bring jer own back, but Jerome's not going to be
- 16:03Speaker 4: the feature back because he's older and.
- 16:05Speaker 2: We need to take some of them.
- 16:06Speaker 4: Let's see what this young, really really fast kid can
- 16:08Speaker 4: do from North Carolina that was at the end of
- 16:11Speaker 4: the bench.
- 16:12Speaker 2: He becomes, like you said, the longest rush in Super
- 16:15Speaker 2: Bowl history.
- 16:16Speaker 4: From the line of scrimmage right in Willie Parker and
- 16:20Speaker 4: he becomes a folk here in a legend here in
- 16:22Speaker 4: at Western pas he helps the Steelers get.
- 16:24Speaker 2: One for the thumb like that.
- 16:27Speaker 4: But because he was willing to sit there and say
- 16:29Speaker 4: I could sit back and learn, I'm gonna wait for
- 16:31Speaker 4: my opportunity and just continue to chop wood. Your number
- 16:35Speaker 4: gets called, like you said, Dylan Cook is a more
- 16:37Speaker 4: contemporary version of that as well. And even you know,
- 16:40Speaker 4: to put it in a in another sense, a Spencer
- 16:43Speaker 4: Anderson who came in here as a tackle but was like,
- 16:47Speaker 4: I just want to get on the field and sat
- 16:50Speaker 4: back and first year was really just trying to learn
- 16:53Speaker 4: all these differences, like trying to play four different positions.
- 16:55Speaker 4: And then last year comes in, Hey, by the way,
- 16:58Speaker 4: can you snap as well?
- 16:59Speaker 2: Oh yeah, I can do that. I can do whatever
- 17:00Speaker 2: you tell. Seventh round draft choice Rights becomes.
- 17:03Speaker 4: A swing guy and a Swiss Army knife and now
- 17:08Speaker 4: comes here this year, starting for competing for a starting job.
- 17:11Speaker 2: And it's got to make you hungry if you are
- 17:15Speaker 2: this year's late round draft choice, if you are Eli
- 17:17Speaker 2: Heidenreich or Robert Spears Jennings or Gabriel Rubio or one
- 17:21Speaker 2: of these guys. To know, hey, listen, the door is
- 17:24Speaker 2: left open for players to succeed. And look other organizations.
- 17:30Speaker 2: I'm not saying the Steelers are the only organization this is,
- 17:33Speaker 2: but the Steelers do this, and you know what that does.
- 17:36Speaker 2: That makes you a better organization, That's what it does well.
- 17:39Speaker 4: And it puts you in a position where you can
- 17:42Speaker 4: keep talent exactly and you can grow talent and groom
- 17:46Speaker 4: guys and you're not worried about free agency every single year.
- 17:50Speaker 4: I've got to go pull the best player, what's the
- 17:52Speaker 4: most shocking name, and make the biggest blockburster deal or trade.
- 17:58Speaker 4: It's no we got guys in our farm, right, and
- 18:02Speaker 4: we'll just go a little bit sidetracked with baseball references, right,
- 18:05Speaker 4: I would rather pull a guy up from our system
- 18:07Speaker 4: in triple A, double A or single A, right, right,
- 18:10Speaker 4: versus going and trading for somebody in another system and
- 18:14Speaker 4: then bringing them over.
- 18:15Speaker 2: So I think that's where you kind of look at it.
- 18:17Speaker 4: You want to keep as much homegrown talent, drafted talent,
- 18:21Speaker 4: curated talent within your in your system so that you
- 18:25Speaker 4: can grow them in your culture, then your philosophy so
- 18:27Speaker 4: when their name is called, they're ready to step on
- 18:30Speaker 4: the field and go one hundred percent.
- 18:33Speaker 2: So we're going to dive a little more into the
- 18:35Speaker 2: tight end situation. I think that some of these discussions
- 18:38Speaker 2: are certainly worth having so that fans understand, you know,
- 18:41Speaker 2: the way this is operating and the way this is
- 18:42Speaker 2: being done, and the opportunities that are available for these
- 18:45Speaker 2: players out here. We're going to talk a little bit
- 18:47Speaker 2: more about that tight end position. More things Steer. There's
- 18:49Speaker 2: from beautiful Saint Vincent College Training Camp continuing in the
- 18:53Speaker 2: locker room here with Max Stark to myself, Rob King

- 19:42Speaker 2: And welcome back. Inside the locker room from Saint Vincent
- 19:44Speaker 2: College and the trop chuck An Oldfield all cleaned up
- 19:48Speaker 2: and ready to go for practice tomorrow. You know, it's
- 19:52Speaker 2: it's interesting like when you get here early, you see
- 19:55Speaker 2: everybody preparing the feel and the players come on of
- 19:58Speaker 2: course are the main event, and then they leave. Then
- 19:59Speaker 2: if you but he's still working man, they're still putting
- 20:02Speaker 2: their time in. They're cleaning up the cones over here.
- 20:07Speaker 2: And the different things that are utilized during practice, yardage markers.
- 20:11Speaker 2: Yardage markers all have to come up and be taken in.
- 20:14Speaker 2: So we're talking about the tight end position. And you know,
- 20:17Speaker 2: I do think that one of the things that's really
- 20:19Speaker 2: interesting is how they're going to utilize Darnell and Pat Fryrenmouth.
- 20:24Speaker 2: You know, we made the point yet and I think
- 20:26Speaker 2: Robert Tanyan we all agree, or you and I agree,
- 20:29Speaker 2: that he could step in and do a very credible
- 20:31Speaker 2: job for you. You know, there's guys that could step
- 20:35Speaker 2: in and you can kind of get through the rest
- 20:37Speaker 2: of the game with him. He's more than that, you know,
- 20:39Speaker 2: he's not just a guy. Well, we got to put
- 20:41Speaker 2: him out there fingers crossed. You know, it's better than
- 20:44Speaker 2: he can do something. It's better than going over to
- 20:47Speaker 2: the defensive coach and saying, hey, you got anybody here
- 20:49Speaker 2: that played tight end in college. You know, you know
- 20:53Speaker 2: you don't have to do that. You feel good about
- 20:56Speaker 2: what he can do to help you win a game.
- 20:58Speaker 2: But I do think that in a lot of ways,
- 21:02Speaker 2: and it sounds crass, but it really it just makes
- 21:06Speaker 2: sense to follow follow the money, follow what follow the
- 21:12Speaker 2: draft picks. Follow the money that tells you, you know,
- 21:14Speaker 2: follow a trade acquisition, that tells you what a what
- 21:18Speaker 2: an organization thinks about a player. They think he's worth
- 21:23Speaker 2: excellent amount of money, and therefore you would expect him
- 21:27Speaker 2: to be used accordingly. Well, you have a coach now
- 21:31Speaker 2: who's probably going to use more twelve personnel maybe than
- 21:34Speaker 2: he has in the past, but not as much as
- 21:37Speaker 2: maybe another coat now it remains to be seen. Yeah,
- 21:40Speaker 2: but we know nothing yet, right right till the early days,
- 21:43Speaker 2: you got to follow the money for two tight ends, right,
- 21:45Speaker 2: so it'll be very interesting. I don't know how they're
- 21:47Speaker 2: going to divvy up the snaps. Well, I think, like
- 21:49Speaker 2: you said, twelve.
- 21:50Speaker 4: Personnel gives you an even snap count, right, right, they're
- 21:54Speaker 4: both on the field, they're both on either side, or
- 21:56Speaker 4: even if you deploy them in doubles and run a
- 21:59Speaker 4: twins with him of some of some sort. But I
- 22:03Speaker 4: think what you have to look at is matchup basis. Right,
- 22:09Speaker 4: Maybe you're a little more Darnel Washington front side at
- 22:15Speaker 4: the point of tacking divisional play, and maybe you use
- 22:18Speaker 4: Pat Friremouth more on the backside or split out, and
- 22:22Speaker 4: then when you get to teams that are pretty balanced,
- 22:25Speaker 4: maybe you have both of them in line and it
- 22:27Speaker 4: can be interchangeable and then maybe one you know, based
- 22:31Speaker 4: on a play, one has the matchup advantage over the other. Right,
- 22:35Speaker 4: I find very few guys that that Darneld Washington is
- 22:40Speaker 4: not overmatch, you.
- 22:41Speaker 2: Know, in a lot of situations.
- 22:42Speaker 4: But I think but it could be a speed thing, right,
- 22:44Speaker 4: it could be a speed thing that, Okay, we can't
- 22:46Speaker 4: really use Darnell as much, then kind of some some
- 22:49Speaker 4: hook and curl stuff.
- 22:50Speaker 2: In the middle of the field along the hashes.
- 22:52Speaker 4: Maybe this is more Pat Friarmouth game because he's the
- 22:55Speaker 4: quicker of the two tight ends, and we want to
- 22:58Speaker 4: utilize stuff more in the middle of the field. And
- 22:59Speaker 4: maybe we reserved Darnell from more of your red zone
- 23:02Speaker 4: packages right where he's that tall, lengthy target that can
- 23:06Speaker 4: just go bowling for buzzards right once he gets the
- 23:09Speaker 4: ball in his hands. So I think it's just a
- 23:11Speaker 4: cool thing that I don't think it's going to be equal,
- 23:14Speaker 4: but I think it's going to be similar, and that
- 23:16Speaker 4: they're looking for the mashup matchup disadvantage on the other team.
- 23:21Speaker 4: Who can I put that can match up better with
- 23:24Speaker 4: this linebacker that'll be carrying him, or this nickel that
- 23:28Speaker 4: drops down, or this dollar safety like a bunch of
- 23:31Speaker 4: you know, every defense has a different name for these guys.
- 23:34Speaker 2: Maybe he can, maybe he can beat up this rover.
- 23:36Speaker 2: So I think that's kind of how you have to
- 23:38Speaker 2: look at it.
- 23:38Speaker 4: And Robert Tanya is kind of a nice hybrid between
- 23:40Speaker 4: both Pat Fryarmouth and Darneld Washington where accomplished blocker, willing blocker,
- 23:46Speaker 4: but also has a resume of catching the football and
- 23:48Speaker 4: knows how to deploy.
- 23:49Speaker 2: I was gonna ask you if you think it's fair
- 23:52Speaker 2: to say, for fans who haven't seen him play don't
- 23:54Speaker 2: know a lot about him, that he's sort of in
- 23:56Speaker 2: between those guys, And you just said, you know, that's
- 23:59Speaker 2: what you think he is.
- 23:59Speaker 4: That's what I think he is. I mean because I
- 24:01Speaker 4: watched Tanya in play in Green Bay. I had a
- 24:03Speaker 4: whole bunch of Green Bay games early in my career
- 24:06Speaker 4: as a broadcaster, and so I got to watch Tanya,
- 24:09Speaker 4: and Tanyan is one of those guys where he was
- 24:11Speaker 4: just right at that same time with Travis Kelce and
- 24:15Speaker 4: George Kittle and all those guys where you could line
- 24:18Speaker 4: him up in the slot and he didn't have to
- 24:20Speaker 4: be truly in line, but he could play in line.
- 24:22Speaker 4: He was kind of one of those He was in
- 24:24Speaker 4: that kind of genesis era of the flex tight end, so.
- 24:29Speaker 2: He fits into that kind of style of play right.
- 24:31Speaker 2: And then you know, one of the things about any
- 24:34Speaker 2: position group is that, well, not offensive line, you're gonna
- 24:38Speaker 2: run five out there. But when you talk about tight
- 24:40Speaker 2: end receiver, sometimes you talk about sub packages on defense,
- 24:44Speaker 2: who are our best guys? And then maybe that dictates
- 24:48Speaker 2: a little bit of usage as well. So in the
- 24:50Speaker 2: past you might in the past the Sooners have been
- 24:53Speaker 2: searching for a second wide receiver. Yeah, they've got one.
- 24:56Speaker 2: Michael Pittman's gonna play. You know, Michael Pittman's a good play.
- 25:00Speaker 2: He's on the field. He's on the field, on the field.
- 25:02Speaker 2: You know you're gonna see DK Metcalf on the field. Now,
- 25:05Speaker 2: are they gonna be on there for every snap?
- 25:06Speaker 5: No?
- 25:07Speaker 2: Are they gonna get a lot of snaps? Yes, they're
- 25:08Speaker 2: gonna get a lot of snaps. Then you spend a
- 25:10Speaker 2: second round pick on Jeremy Bernard. Now, I don't know
- 25:14Speaker 2: how much this staff feels like that's a projection pick
- 25:18Speaker 2: as opposed to a now pick. Hey, we think this
- 25:20Speaker 2: guy's gonna be terrific, but we're gonna bring him along
- 25:23Speaker 2: slowly or whether hey, he's ready to go. Now, I
- 25:26Speaker 2: think there was a there was there was some now
- 25:28Speaker 2: thoughts about him coming out of college. He's pretty polished,
- 25:31Speaker 2: he's pretty physical, he'll do some things that you like. Now.
- 25:34Speaker 2: And then there's Roman Wilson, right, So you know, here's
- 25:37Speaker 2: a guy.
- 25:38Speaker 6: Uh.
- 25:39Speaker 2: I think I've mentioned this before. You know, last last
- 25:42Speaker 2: couple of years, we've been talking about a lot about
- 25:44Speaker 2: contested catches, and and that's great. You know, I like
- 25:47Speaker 2: contested catches, you know what, I also like uncontested catches
- 25:50Speaker 2: where guys are open. You know that means that means
- 25:53Speaker 2: you shook a guy out of the right. I kind
- 25:55Speaker 2: of want wiggle. I want I like uncontested catch and
- 25:58Speaker 2: and I think of the group, Roman Wilson is probably,
- 26:02Speaker 2: you know, for that quick little ability to maybe cause
- 26:05Speaker 2: some separation. You know, Mike McCarthy talks about two point
- 26:08Speaker 2: three seconds. He's you know, I think DK metcalf can
- 26:12Speaker 2: use his speed, but also his size. Pittman can use
- 26:15Speaker 2: his size and is savvy. I think Bernard's more that
- 26:17Speaker 2: size savvy kind of I don't want to take away
- 26:19Speaker 2: their athleticism any of these guys, but the guy with
- 26:22Speaker 2: the most potential for a little wiggle, it's probably Roman Wilson, right.
- 26:26Speaker 2: Wilson and Kayden Legion probably. Yeah, that's right. There's a
- 26:29Speaker 2: value one two right there. Yeah, that are wiggles.
- 26:32Speaker 4: And I think it really comes down to big trips
- 26:35Speaker 4: little trips, right if I want to have if I
- 26:39Speaker 4: go line up Jerom Hubernard, Michael Pittman, and DK Metcalf
- 26:41Speaker 4: as my eleven personnel, You're like, holy crap, we don't
- 26:44Speaker 4: have enough.
- 26:45Speaker 2: Height right for three of these guys.
- 26:47Speaker 6: Yep.
- 26:47Speaker 2: But if I line up Roman Wilson's like, do I
- 26:49Speaker 2: have enough speed in the slot?
- 26:50Speaker 4: It's exactly right? Can I take it advantage of that?
- 26:52Speaker 4: If I have Kayden legion in the slot? Like, can
- 26:54Speaker 4: I take advantage of the speed burst? Can I get
- 26:58Speaker 4: those quick crossers? Can I get those behind the line
- 27:00Speaker 4: of scrimmage motions that then allow you to kind of
- 27:03Speaker 4: lose a guy and then he can burn down down
- 27:05Speaker 4: the scene or the hash and make a play like.
- 27:07Speaker 4: Those are the things that I think having the option
- 27:11Speaker 4: to and I think that's what this wide receiving group
- 27:13Speaker 4: presents as options. Yes, I can mix and match based
- 27:17Speaker 4: on my personnel, a matchup that will give us an
- 27:21Speaker 4: advantage somehow.
- 27:22Speaker 2: And the other thing I like about it is again
- 27:25Speaker 2: to be the to be mildly contrarion, but hopefully the
- 27:28Speaker 2: same way about or you know, a contested uncontested is
- 27:32Speaker 2: that sometimes it's just okay to say, Okay, we're gonna
- 27:35Speaker 2: we're gonna run big personnelity guys. Okay, well then we'll
- 27:38Speaker 2: put our big personnel. Guess you're a big personnel because
- 27:40Speaker 2: we think our guys are better. Yeah, because we have
- 27:42Speaker 2: Pittman and we have Metcalfine, we have Bernard, and we
- 27:44Speaker 2: want to have big guys, right, yeah, so we'll go
- 27:46Speaker 2: we'll go big on big, sure, or we'll go a
- 27:48Speaker 2: little on big, and so it doesn't have to be
- 27:50Speaker 2: so match up oriented. You know, when you think about
- 27:53Speaker 2: the history of the game, and this is one of
- 27:56Speaker 2: the things that I love. The different trends are so fascinating. Right,
- 28:00Speaker 2: So you get you know, you get the fun bunch
- 28:02Speaker 2: and you get these small receivers and you're out there
- 28:04Speaker 2: and the big defensive backs you know, they that you
- 28:07Speaker 2: have in there to stop it, and they can't keep
- 28:08Speaker 2: up with them, right, so what are you doing? So
- 28:10Speaker 2: you get little, you get smaller, quicker defensive backs, and
- 28:13Speaker 2: then some other team goes you know, there's a lot
- 28:15Speaker 2: of small, quick defensive backs. How about if we go
- 28:17Speaker 2: with really big wide receivers, you know, box them out
- 28:20Speaker 2: and then they now they're overpowering those guys. Now, how
- 28:23Speaker 2: do you how do you counter back as a as
- 28:26Speaker 2: a defense? And same thing with you know, I think
- 28:29Speaker 2: you have to give some credit to the Ravens, right,
- 28:30Speaker 2: you get a lot of the league's dealers are not
- 28:33Speaker 2: among them, but a lot of league are going for smaller,
- 28:35Speaker 2: quicker pass rushers and lighter, lighter into into your linebackers
- 28:41Speaker 2: to run out there and cover those quick running backs.
- 28:44Speaker 2: And so the Ravens just say, okay, well, then let's
- 28:46Speaker 2: just go really big and ram Derrick Henry down at
- 28:49Speaker 2: your two hundred and thirty five pound inside linebackers. See
- 28:52Speaker 2: how much they like that?
- 28:53Speaker 4: Come to third or fourth quarter, third fourth quarter when
- 28:56Speaker 4: he when he's getting stronger, right, what are you.
- 28:58Speaker 2: Going to do? And who was it that? And so
- 29:00Speaker 2: a lot of teams then try to counter it. Was
- 29:02Speaker 2: a couple of years ago in the playoffs, somebody came
- 29:05Speaker 2: out with a base defense that had seven defensive backs
- 29:09Speaker 2: and you're thinking, is that gonna work against that big
- 29:13Speaker 2: and they were too quick for him, and they just
- 29:15Speaker 2: shut down Lamar in that running game. So there's another
- 29:17Speaker 2: way you counterbounds. It is one of the fascinating things
- 29:21Speaker 2: the trends, but also the matchups and how are we
- 29:23Speaker 2: going to attack it? And I think the Steelers have
- 29:26Speaker 2: clearly have more talent at the receiver position, more ways
- 29:30Speaker 2: it can attack, and that could certainly affect the tight
- 29:33Speaker 2: end position, which also has some of those capabilities. With
- 29:37Speaker 2: the three guys were projecting or going to be on
- 29:40Speaker 2: this roster. Yeah, no, I think you're absolutely right.
- 29:42Speaker 4: And it was a they call it quarter personnel when
- 29:45Speaker 4: you go seven defensive backs. Yeah, because you had Nickel
- 29:47Speaker 4: diam quarters seven, and there are teams because you did.
- 29:52Speaker 4: You did have some teams who do have those hybrid
- 29:55Speaker 4: starbackers right right where he's still a defensive back when
- 29:59Speaker 4: he plays in the box, right, it's that extra safety
- 30:02Speaker 4: type of dude, and they'll use that as their four
- 30:04Speaker 4: to two Nickel as their base personnel, but he plays
- 30:07Speaker 4: a third linebacking position.
- 30:09Speaker 2: So there's a lot of different ways to get to it.
- 30:11Speaker 4: But you're right, I mean, you know, how do you
- 30:12Speaker 4: match up? But you want all those options, so I
- 30:14Speaker 4: can you know, it's just like going to a buffet.
- 30:17Speaker 4: I just want everything presented and I'll tell you if
- 30:20Speaker 4: I want the car of roast beef, right, if I
- 30:23Speaker 4: want the prime rib?
- 30:24Speaker 2: Or do I want fried chicken today? Right? Or do
- 30:26Speaker 2: I want the salmon like I want?
- 30:28Speaker 4: Just but give me all three options, right, don't tell
- 30:30Speaker 4: me we're just we're just having chicken for dinner.
- 30:33Speaker 2: Right. I want to know can I mix and match
- 30:35Speaker 2: my plate? That's what you want. You want this smorgas
- 30:38Speaker 2: board of options.
- 30:39Speaker 4: So you're trying to find the best players that can
- 30:41Speaker 4: give you that versatility throughout the season.
- 30:43Speaker 2: And then what you also want on defense, just to
- 30:46Speaker 2: use the defensive side of the ball is when you
- 30:48Speaker 2: have Mel Blunt, or you have Joe Green, or you
- 30:54Speaker 2: have TJ. Watt. The great players Okay, yeah, I'm stronger
- 30:59Speaker 2: than your August and I'm quicker than your quickest and
- 31:03Speaker 2: so you don't have to You're not suffing anybody out.
- 31:05Speaker 2: And no matter what you try, they got the answer
- 31:09Speaker 2: because they're singularly great players.
- 31:12Speaker 4: Yeah, they're just excellent at what they do, not good,
- 31:15Speaker 4: not great, they are excellent.
- 31:18Speaker 2: We're gonna go with smaller defensive backs. Not you, Mel,
- 31:20Speaker 2: You're still out. No, No, melw stay out there. You
- 31:24Speaker 2: don't count.
- 31:25Speaker 4: I'm talking about the rest of the team. Hey, we're
- 31:27Speaker 4: gonna we're gonna go to a small defensive line. Not you, Joe,
- 31:30Speaker 4: that's right, that you Joe, that's right, Not you skinny
- 31:32Speaker 4: in your mind, that's right, that's exactly just in your mind.
- 31:36Speaker 2: All fun stuff. So no practice tomorrow. Back with well

- 33:02Speaker 4: All right back inside the locker room here. Max Stark's
- 33:05Speaker 4: still on the airways. Rob King has departed, but I
- 33:09Speaker 4: went and got a little luck of the Irish for
- 33:11Speaker 4: this last segment. Here we got Mick McQuaid, of course
- 33:14Speaker 4: everything Steelers and everything in Ireland, and he has the
- 33:18Speaker 4: Steelers Ireland podcast, correct the Irish Irish Steelers Podcast. And
- 33:24Speaker 4: I just I always, I always want to add more
- 33:26Speaker 4: letters to it than it than it needs.
- 33:28Speaker 2: But no joining us.
- 33:29Speaker 4: And you've been here now a couple of days up
- 33:31Speaker 4: at training camp here and just kind of give me
- 33:34Speaker 4: your thoughts, man, you know, coming up here to Saint Facs.
- 33:37Speaker 4: You've made it here a couple of times. Just what
- 33:39Speaker 4: does it mean to come back every year? Every year
- 33:41Speaker 4: and just you know, see this new crop of Steelers.
- 33:44Speaker 5: You know, I knows is coming on in a few
- 33:46Speaker 5: minutes on the channel. But I was sort of saying,
- 33:49Speaker 5: I'd love to go back here before practice Annas in
- 33:52Speaker 5: August because it's just so fun. There's a really, really
- 33:54Speaker 5: good vibe here. I went to a Seahawks and Niners,
- 33:58Speaker 5: both l A clubs over the last so it's been
- 34:00Speaker 5: a bit of a busy schedule. But when you see
- 34:02Speaker 5: the difference here on the camaraderie and the fact that
- 34:05Speaker 5: like for example, the other day, Justin Herbert gets in
- 34:08Speaker 5: the car, Who's home Mafia Stafford who these guys are
- 34:11Speaker 5: locked in their income together, they're building the bond. I
- 34:13Speaker 5: don't think you can put a price on that. And
- 34:15Speaker 5: then you see, like I was talking to a family
- 34:17Speaker 5: today that I haven't made it as theaters game in
- 34:19Speaker 5: four or five years. They flew in for this just
- 34:21Speaker 5: to see their players. Yeah, and that's very very different. Yes,
- 34:24Speaker 5: we were talking yesterday. It's gonna be on the podcastinga
- 34:26Speaker 5: but the community element of Irish sport, it's very different.
- 34:30Speaker 5: But it's also so similar as well, and it's awesome.
- 34:32Speaker 5: On like I would day I would stay here all
- 34:34Speaker 5: somewhere if it could. You know, I actually would.
- 34:36Speaker 6: It's it's phenomenal.
- 34:38Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, no, what we definitely don't want your wife
- 34:41Speaker 4: being said like he's having all this fun in America.
- 34:44Speaker 4: But I think that's the other thing that's kind of
- 34:46Speaker 4: like you said, it's a community type.
- 34:49Speaker 2: Of aspect, right.
- 34:50Speaker 4: I mean, you know we're here on a Saturday and
- 34:52Speaker 4: the hills are full of fans, and the players are
- 34:55Speaker 4: taking the time afterwards to do autographs, and like you said,
- 34:59Speaker 4: some of your main stars getting the car and leave,
- 35:02Speaker 4: Like Aaron Rodgers is not getting his car and leave,
- 35:04Speaker 4: He's walking up the hill to Rooney Hall to get
- 35:07Speaker 4: in his dorm room.
- 35:08Speaker 2: Yeah, it's just a different aspect.
- 35:11Speaker 4: And you know you were around yesterday and you got
- 35:14Speaker 4: so you know, you got some good interviews that are
- 35:15Speaker 4: gonna be on the pod and everything. But what do
- 35:18Speaker 4: you think about as far as like the access to players.
- 35:20Speaker 4: I think that's also another thing that kind of ingratiates
- 35:23Speaker 4: players into the community. They're they're about to play for
- 35:27Speaker 4: having that type of access. What does that mean for
- 35:29Speaker 4: your fan base?
- 35:30Speaker 5: I think I think the access is big, Like like
- 35:32Speaker 5: we literally just came off there now talking to Keanudventon
- 35:35Speaker 5: on Nick Herbig as well. We had well with pet
- 35:39Speaker 5: and Wilson yesterday as well on Patrick Queen. I'm actually
- 35:43Speaker 5: getting to talk to them a wee bit about like
- 35:44Speaker 5: you know, the Dublin game last year, but also you know,
- 35:47Speaker 5: traveling internationally the pros and cons, but that again as well,
- 35:50Speaker 5: you know fans in Ireland, you know Steeters fans and
- 35:52Speaker 5: even just general NFL funds that want to learn more
- 35:55Speaker 5: about the sport, discussing the fucked up there's not just
- 35:57Speaker 5: a new head coach, but really a new regime here
- 36:00Speaker 5: and what are the differences between incomes, because that's one
- 36:02Speaker 5: thing that people have told me about. You know, the
- 36:04Speaker 5: times are different, the regimes are different, but one thing
- 36:06Speaker 5: does stay to see them a couple of years coming
- 36:08Speaker 5: here and you're talking about the access. When you see
- 36:10Speaker 5: those players walk down those steps and you see the kids' faces,
- 36:14Speaker 5: it's it's something very very special and honestly the genuine
- 36:19Speaker 5: you know, care to the players. How there's not there's
- 36:20Speaker 5: not one player I've seen the last couple of days
- 36:22Speaker 5: it doesn't want to be here. They're locked in and
- 36:24Speaker 5: they know they're making a difference as well, but the
- 36:26Speaker 5: access has been created and walked past us more than
- 36:29Speaker 5: seeing coach mccarfrey and he was all smiles and that's cool,
- 36:32Speaker 5: that's crazy. I live in the middle of nowhere and
- 36:34Speaker 5: the side of farm, so like you've actually come in
- 36:36Speaker 5: here and do that.
- 36:36Speaker 6: It's it's it's incredible.
- 36:38Speaker 2: No, that is awesome. Well, and talking about Ireland, I mean,
- 36:41Speaker 2: you know.
- 36:42Speaker 4: We're a little less than a year removed from that.
- 36:46Speaker 2: I know, I know.
- 36:47Speaker 4: It's like it's like we have to take like a
- 36:48Speaker 4: collective moment of silence. And she had, she had a
- 36:51Speaker 4: tear drop because that was such a phenomenal trip. And
- 36:55Speaker 4: when you think about the Steelers hadn't been abroad since
- 36:58Speaker 4: twenty thirteen, and then you get your next international opportunity
- 37:04Speaker 4: is of all countries, like the ownership, like their home
- 37:09Speaker 4: country and the connection that they have to Ireland, and
- 37:13Speaker 4: then to bring a game there, and I know you
- 37:15Speaker 4: worked tirelessly for years trying to lobby and trying to
- 37:18Speaker 4: get that game there, and then it finally comes there
- 37:21Speaker 4: and it was a phenomenal week. It was a phenomenal week.
- 37:24Speaker 4: And just kind of talk about your experience, like you said,
- 37:27Speaker 4: you always come here to see the Steelers. Now, the
- 37:29Speaker 4: Steelers came to see you essentially and to see the
- 37:32Speaker 4: people of Ireland. How how was that for you guys?
- 37:35Speaker 4: And and there's kind of that week leading up to
- 37:37Speaker 4: the game.
- 37:38Speaker 5: Well, there's sources are in the kit, your change in
- 37:40Speaker 5: your name to Maxo Starks.
- 37:41Speaker 6: Yeah, for the next game in the future.
- 37:43Speaker 2: It's definitely working on Theirth certificate right now.
- 37:46Speaker 5: And do you know what like, Look, I appreciate what
- 37:48Speaker 5: you're saying there, but I would say I was a
- 37:50Speaker 5: speckle of help in comparison to the loss Roney for
- 37:53Speaker 5: what heatl and not just for football, but for so
- 37:56Speaker 5: many relations between the US and Ireland as well across
- 37:59Speaker 5: the island of Ireland. But you know, when you actually
- 38:02Speaker 5: come here this year, when it's been done, when it's
- 38:04Speaker 5: been said and done, I think you appreciate a lot more.
- 38:07Speaker 5: I know we met up with the draft for a
- 38:08Speaker 5: very briefly, but it does hit you here when you
- 38:11Speaker 5: know he meets you know, mister Rooney or Don Rooney
- 38:14Speaker 5: and you speak to them, and the genuine care they
- 38:17Speaker 5: have for the island is it is just phenomenal. But
- 38:19Speaker 5: the week itself was I mean, how do you even
- 38:23Speaker 5: begin to like I think it was was it that
- 38:25Speaker 5: the Patriots was the game before having so I remember
- 38:27Speaker 5: watching that game and at the very very end, I
- 38:30Speaker 5: was like, well the next game is Ireland, Baby, here
- 38:32Speaker 5: we go. And like you imagine people like obviously that
- 38:35Speaker 5: are listening are obviously you know, mostly US based listening
- 38:38Speaker 5: to this. You imagine if you're hopping on a plane
- 38:40Speaker 5: to London for years. I'm not look, it's great, don't
- 38:42Speaker 5: get me wrong, but then you can hop on the
- 38:44Speaker 5: train and drive done. You're going to a game in
- 38:47Speaker 5: like on your island and in in your country, and
- 38:50Speaker 5: it's special. And I know you've probably seen more of
- 38:53Speaker 5: Ireland than I have. But this terrible tiles, which we'll
- 38:55Speaker 5: talk about in the weeks.
- 38:56Speaker 2: Second, but the.
- 38:59Speaker 5: You know hit me probably before the games started, but
- 39:00Speaker 5: that morning when people were walking down the Jones Road
- 39:03Speaker 5: to that stadium was very special. And I think it
- 39:07Speaker 5: was whenever I'm sure people listening will remember the giant
- 39:10Speaker 5: toile came up.
- 39:11Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, there was.
- 39:12Speaker 5: A couple of teardrop shed at that moment, but that, man,
- 39:15Speaker 5: it was awesome. And you know, obviously we all wanted
- 39:19Speaker 5: to be the Steelers, but you get it back man,
- 39:21Speaker 5: find a way. Let's just play a game there every year,
- 39:23Speaker 5: and we'll just find a way financially subse. Yeah, exactly.
- 39:26Speaker 4: Just be like the Jacksonville Jaguars, Like you have to
- 39:28Speaker 4: go to they have to go to London every we
- 39:30Speaker 4: just have to go to Ireland every year, or at
- 39:32Speaker 4: least every year we have an extra home game, right,
- 39:35Speaker 4: I'd definitely be up to that.
- 39:36Speaker 5: I would be the man we having the flag at
- 39:37Speaker 5: the airport to get boy nice. Even at the airport
- 39:41Speaker 5: there was like five hundred people we hitten in the
- 39:43Speaker 5: arrivals and obviously the guys could often up the bus,
- 39:46Speaker 5: but I mean you were down at the training that
- 39:49Speaker 5: they had on the friday. Yeah, I've never seen as
- 39:51Speaker 5: many journalists at an NFL conference, and I know that
- 39:54Speaker 5: the NFL would say this as well. Easily the most
- 39:57Speaker 5: successful international game they've had in maybe twenty thirty years.
- 40:00Speaker 6: So easily phenomenal on day.
- 40:02Speaker 5: You know, you're obviously gonna spear had the return locks
- 40:04Speaker 5: I'm here.
- 40:04Speaker 8: Yeah, No, I've definitely already put in my request, like, hey, guys,
- 40:10Speaker 8: if if I had, if I had any vote, which
- 40:13Speaker 8: I don't, I'm picking Ireland over all the countries.
- 40:16Speaker 5: I mean like I mean maybe you did, and maybe
- 40:18Speaker 5: you give them the wrong city and you give them
- 40:19Speaker 5: the French city instead. I think I think a lot
- 40:22Speaker 5: of European finds are very very happy and honestly surprise
- 40:25Speaker 5: in a positive way that we're getting the naber Johans
- 40:27Speaker 5: look to see like Aaron Rodgers I fault when he
- 40:29Speaker 5: was in the press conference last year. That would be
- 40:31Speaker 5: his lost international one. Yeah, I'm we nicely in new
- 40:33Speaker 5: element to the Steeters franchise come over and play in
- 40:36Speaker 5: an our historic game and it's it's only ninety minutes whatever.
- 40:39Speaker 5: People alarm them in the UK, So it's awesome.
- 40:41Speaker 4: There's a quick, quick, little fright flight there across the
- 40:44Speaker 4: pond and uh. And I think that's the other thing
- 40:46Speaker 4: is that you know the Steelers are now opening markets
- 40:49Speaker 4: internationally because like you said, you bring the first, we
- 40:52Speaker 4: bring the first game that's been done in Ireland, Germany
- 40:55Speaker 4: and in Germany, and then now we're doing a game
- 40:58Speaker 4: in Paris, like opening that market.
- 41:01Speaker 2: Up even though we're they're away team.
- 41:03Speaker 4: But it's like now we need the Steelers there like
- 41:05Speaker 4: like they they their fans carry like like we actually
- 41:08Speaker 4: have that following that is already in Europe, but we
- 41:13Speaker 4: also bring the American fans over to Europe.
- 41:15Speaker 5: I think, like it's something that I mentioned there to
- 41:18Speaker 5: Nick Herbig that I was over in the Ordans on Weddnesday,
- 41:20Speaker 5: I nearly died and the heath as an Irishman, that's
- 41:22Speaker 5: a different.
- 41:23Speaker 2: Conversation, that's different humidity when you.
- 41:25Speaker 6: Talk to them.
- 41:26Speaker 5: Obviously he wasn't speaking to Missus Benson, but you knew
- 41:29Speaker 5: the pride that they have in their team and the
- 41:31Speaker 5: connection that they have to that country. Like I said
- 41:33Speaker 5: to Nick Herbig, what an opportunity we have here to
- 41:36Speaker 5: go win and win that game because they have to
- 41:39Speaker 5: win that game.
- 41:40Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah, almost like.
- 41:41Speaker 4: The French creole and everything, like the French culture and
- 41:44Speaker 4: the Florida ls that are all around that city, and
- 41:47Speaker 4: that attachment, like you said, it's it has an attachment
- 41:50Speaker 4: to that country that's synonymous. But once again, the real
- 41:54Speaker 4: black and gold versus the fake black and gold. I
- 41:56Speaker 4: think it's also cool. So technically, if you're wearing black
- 41:58Speaker 4: and gold and that get you're good for either side.
- 42:00Speaker 4: It's just what tint of gold are you wearing on
- 42:03Speaker 4: game day?
- 42:03Speaker 6: It's a horrible situation for me. Because the proof is
- 42:05Speaker 6: the Steelers.
- 42:06Speaker 5: Are playing in Paris, which is fantastic, but the Steans
- 42:09Speaker 5: could have an Irish kicker on as well.
- 42:10Speaker 2: So it's like, well, you know what, what he can
- 42:13Speaker 2: he could score points.
- 42:13Speaker 6: He just can't win exactly.
- 42:15Speaker 5: And if he's scoring points, and then the Steels scoring
- 42:17Speaker 5: touchdown in squad.
- 42:17Speaker 6: But I mean I can like, I mean, I can
- 42:19Speaker 6: count to tan in French.
- 42:20Speaker 5: And I know you're starting to, you know, practice your
- 42:22Speaker 5: franis yeahuz on the team, Yeah, yeah.
- 42:26Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly. That's all I got.
- 42:28Speaker 6: That's all I got for You're a mess.
- 42:29Speaker 2: But my friends and then and then way way you
- 42:32Speaker 2: said that we we, yeah, party, it is not we,
- 42:35Speaker 2: even though it's oh u I you would think.
- 42:37Speaker 6: It would be, it would be we.
- 42:39Speaker 5: It's gonna be Like the funny thing is that game
- 42:41Speaker 5: is gonna fly in and you sort of think to
- 42:42Speaker 5: yourself and you look at our schedule like that is
- 42:45Speaker 5: gonna be crucial, And it's different this year. There's no
- 42:47Speaker 5: body week after that now. So it's it's a big,
- 42:50Speaker 5: big situation. But it's Look, it's the way that the
- 42:52Speaker 5: NFL is going. The teams are gonna be playing every year.
- 42:54Speaker 5: The Niniers are playing twice what Mexico, Australia.
- 42:57Speaker 2: Australia and Mexico.
- 42:59Speaker 4: Like, I mean, how further apart talking about markets and
- 43:01Speaker 4: just distance, are you going to.
- 43:03Speaker 2: Play two international games? It's just it's crazy.
- 43:06Speaker 4: But I think that's what the NFL wants, right. They
- 43:09Speaker 4: want to get to this eighteenth game schedule and they
- 43:11Speaker 4: want one game for every team, every team to at
- 43:15Speaker 4: least play a game overseas every year. Like that's what
- 43:19Speaker 4: the international expansion is. And like I said, having all
- 43:22Speaker 4: these markets available is nice. And like I said, if
- 43:25Speaker 4: we can plant the Steelers slag in Ireland, is that
- 43:27Speaker 4: that's our official home game international? You know, every year
- 43:32Speaker 4: we had that extra home game would be a pretty
- 43:35Speaker 4: fantastic thing to have.
- 43:36Speaker 5: For anybody that's listening to this as maybe going to
- 43:38Speaker 5: Dublin on some point over the season.
- 43:40Speaker 6: Cany's Public, Kennedy's Yes, the station is. And I know
- 43:43Speaker 6: we've met in there a couple of times.
- 43:44Speaker 4: Listen, you were wearing the Miami Vice all white suit
- 43:47Speaker 4: there in there. Yes, yes, I remember that as I'm
- 43:49Speaker 4: behind the bar porn pints, I am.
- 43:53Speaker 5: I am glad to believe that, especially if the vast
- 43:56Speaker 5: majority of the early games are going to be all
- 43:58Speaker 5: in that bar for any sea there's funds that are
- 43:59Speaker 5: in ourt. Wow, sometimes it is difficult to fight, like
- 44:02Speaker 5: there's bars that have all the games. But Doxy watched
- 44:03Speaker 5: your teams have done. I know the Broncos game is
- 44:05Speaker 5: at a very suitable time for us as well. So
- 44:07Speaker 5: if you're over in Ireland, it feel free to say
- 44:09Speaker 5: hello and it'll be fun this season.
- 44:10Speaker 4: Yeah, that's that's that is going to be a great time.
- 44:13Speaker 4: And and I'm just so excited, you know, because I
- 44:16Speaker 4: think we've had watched parties over the years, and I
- 44:17Speaker 4: think that becomes more of a norm that we will
- 44:21Speaker 4: have watch parties. And now we have kind of a
- 44:23Speaker 4: home base right with Kennedy's. And I'm sure there's other
- 44:26Speaker 4: places that would love to have it, but Kennedy's is
- 44:28Speaker 4: one of our official Steeler bars over in Dublin, and
- 44:32Speaker 4: it's just it's just so much fun, like to think
- 44:34Speaker 4: about this. And that's the other thing I love is
- 44:36Speaker 4: that this is now becoming not just a national game
- 44:39Speaker 4: like we say the NFL the National Football League, but
- 44:42Speaker 4: it really is feeling more like the International Football League
- 44:46Speaker 4: and bringing American football to so many different markets and
- 44:49Speaker 4: there's so many fans that are there and well receiving
- 44:53Speaker 4: the game of football.
- 44:54Speaker 2: I mean, when I went around the island for that week,
- 44:57Speaker 2: you know, we.
- 44:57Speaker 4: Also passed out flag football kits, yes, sir, well just
- 45:00Speaker 4: to get the international planks. Is now an international Olympic sport.
- 45:05Speaker 4: You know, just think about how far we've come that
- 45:08Speaker 4: flag is now an internationally competitive sport on the world
- 45:12Speaker 4: stage at the Olympics.
- 45:13Speaker 5: I think it's it's obviously a game ginger here for
- 45:15Speaker 5: young kids with a stasially young girls in the US
- 45:17Speaker 5: size sport, and obviously women as well. I think in Europe.
- 45:20Speaker 5: It really does introduce funds to the sport at a
- 45:23Speaker 5: very very young age, which is crucial. And to see,
- 45:26Speaker 5: like look, just to see it with my eyes first
- 45:29Speaker 5: than this is not prdic To actually stand there and
- 45:31Speaker 5: see the Steelers create all these different tournaments across the
- 45:34Speaker 5: island north, south, east west phenomenal And it was Stashal
- 45:39Speaker 5: like Jerome badis is up at one and I think
- 45:40Speaker 5: we think we got the bus side and he was
- 45:42Speaker 5: he was not shocked, but I think he was just
