- 0:33Hamster with a blunt pen knife for doing quicker, quicker
- 0:38quicker. Doctor, doctor, doctor, doctor,
- 0:44doctor in distress Let's. Let's say I've only got one
- 0:51thing to say to you all. No, no, no, no, no.
- 0:58What was your favorite line from Doctor in Distress?
- 1:01There was a canine computer. No, what's the bit about the Ice
- 1:08Warriors? They just stood 7 foot tall.
- 1:11Oh, it's awful, isn't it? Prices you must have.
- 1:15You must know the lines from Doctor in Distress.
- 1:19I feel dirt, you know? Oh really?
- 1:22Oh, I need. To go and shower, talk amongst
- 1:26yourselves, but I could. Screw up that off.
- 1:28Oh, of course. We've just made a direct
- 1:30spiritual link between Fraser and Ian Levine.
- 1:32Here's me. Well, who knew?
- 1:36You know how Michael Storm has changed his name on Twitter to
- 1:39Mortal Enemy of Joe Ford? Your Ford's nemesis.
- 1:42That's right. I think that's what Ian Levine's
- 1:44done now. He has a different one every
- 1:48week so my time is long gone. Got it about you.
- 1:52They always get the little people that.
- 1:54May be like the pinnacle though of of your time in Phantom
- 1:57Fraser. Is that what for one week you
- 1:59were Ian Levine's number one enemy?
- 2:02One enemy, yeah, possibly. I mean, there was that, There
- 2:04was that other guy that threatened us with legal action.
- 2:06That was I late. Oh yeah.
- 2:09Jesus Christ. We'll not go into that one yet.
- 2:14Yeah. Just, you know.
- 2:16Having an. Opinion.
- 2:18It's not like Ian Levine don't have a few opinions.
- 2:20I'm sure we had some opinions on Trial of the Time Lord.
- 2:23Oh, he well, he did, yes. I they'd had the very public
- 2:26falling out at this point where Ian Levine, in typical Ian
- 2:32Levine style, revealed things that he knew that weren't
- 2:38supposed to be revealed. So he was the person who
- 2:41revealed it was 14 episodes. He was the person who revealed
- 2:45they were going to cast Bonnie Langford.
- 2:47And all of this was to show I know things that you don't know.
- 2:51And you should know this because this is a bad things that bad
- 2:55JNT is doing because I don't agree with his vision of Doctor
- 3:00Who anymore. I believe, he greeted.
- 3:03This again and again and again. Didn't he greet the news of
- 3:06Bonnie Langford's casting with elation?
- 3:09No, no. I.
- 3:10Know, I know. I think it's sarcastic.
- 3:13The the same way that Eric Same Woods took the casting of Bonnie
- 3:18Langford. 'S I mean, we'll get there into
- 3:20Burvoy. 'S well, we will, yes.
- 3:21He wrote that tricky. I think that scene that he wrote
- 3:25is available as well, you know, So, yeah.
- 3:27It's listening at that, Yeah. And she did it brilliantly.
- 3:30Yeah, yeah, lovely old Ian Levine.
- 3:34Well, let's forget about him and go and face an even greater
- 3:40nemesis, The Valley Yard. Because really, there isn't
- 3:44really a villain in Mysterious Planet, is there?
- 3:47No, I mean, I suppose we've got Draffro.
- 3:52Patrika. Is Strafford the villain though?
- 3:55I know he wants to like, destroy the entire universe, but it's
- 3:59sort of an accident. Yeah.
- 4:01Well, Squirrel the villain. Grey was right about what
- 4:07Bertine's doing. Yeah, but Merdine's what
- 4:09Merdine's doing is right. So that makes Greyl the villain.
- 4:12That's true. People are.
- 4:15It's a bit like. A good world the.
- 4:16Villain is right about what Tavros is doing, yes.
- 4:22He's a correct Nazi, Yeah. How did you say?
- 4:26Glitz, glitz, glitz. Well, I suppose he is only out
- 4:29for himself. And yeah, it is his fault
- 4:32everyone blows up at the end. That's.
- 4:34True, he blows the totem pole up.
- 4:37He does sell out the Doctor, but then he does save the Doctor in
- 4:39episode 4, doesn't he? It's him.
- 4:42It's him sort of falling draft row.
- 4:44That means the Doctor can escape and save everybody.
- 4:48And we know it's not the Colin's not the villain anymore, because
- 4:50this is our nice Colin from Trial of the Time Lord.
- 4:53So maybe that's why this feels quite light.
- 4:56Yeah, because there isn't someone for the guys that.
- 5:01Just listed everyone but. They're all not poor villains,
- 5:06you know. No, they're not.
- 5:09It's classic homes. He's just given them with
- 5:12dimensions. They've all got.
- 5:13Different motivations. It's not just, you know, that
- 5:16guy is the villain because you know, you need to be like and
- 5:21you know, look, is is blatantly the villain in the courtroom.
- 5:25It's you know, there's there's there's a dimension there is.
- 5:28Yes, this guy might be the villain, but he's a lovable
- 5:31villain. This guy's the villain, but he's
- 5:33got a rationale behind being the villain.
- 5:37It's sort of like, you know, Chara's Jackie, look at Chara's
- 5:40Jack and one of the all time classic villains, you know, as
- 5:43villain as villain is, but there's a undercurrent with him
- 5:48of, you know, he is this way because of what Morgus has done
- 5:51to him. And you know, that lends him a
- 5:53sympathy as well. So you have a you have a bit of
- 5:56a sympathy for Katrika and you know, although she is just, you
- 6:00know, playing batshit crazy for one, do what she's doing.
- 6:04You know, you've got, you know, say Grell is technically a
- 6:07villain, but it's understand he's just following his orders
- 6:11and, and that sort of stuff. So there's there's there's not a
- 6:15straightforward villain because. I mean on on what they're
- 6:18actually doing though, or what their their actions.
- 6:21Katrika is probably the biggest villain because in most places
- 6:24when you attack somewhere with guns you're considered a
- 6:27terrorist. So maybe Katrika's the villain.
- 6:31I mean, one terrorist freedom fate, I think, isn't it so?
- 6:37Comes to a very sticky end though, doesn't she?
- 6:40Well, more crispy. Yeah, it's quite gross, isn't
- 6:47it? Well, should we watch it?
- 6:49Oh, let's do that. Yeah, why not?
- 6:51Do you? Know what I knew I'd have fun
- 6:53talking about column with U2. You know are.
- 6:56We going to remember to press play this.
- 6:57Time I want to press play without even counting somebody.
- 7:00Count us in. I don't do commentaries very
- 7:04often anymore. Now it's all fucking book clubs.
- 7:06Let's get that with books. Count us into Chapter 4.
- 7:12Let's go. Oh no, someone count us 3. 21
- 7:20play. What does Colin say?
- 7:22This is a farce, A Ferrago of. Chopped up charges.
- 7:30Oh, this does have that fabulous court scene, doesn't it, In this
- 7:33episode. It does, yes.
- 7:36She goes. You will apologize at once for
- 7:39telling the truth. Never.
- 7:45Oh my God, I couldn't love him more.
- 7:47Oh dear God. Hey, he's just, and I cannot say
- 7:52it enough, you know, these courtroom scenes with him
- 7:54kicking off are just absolutely beautiful, blistering, magnetic.
- 8:00I've just realized, you know, I've got 10 more episodes of
- 8:04Colin to talk to you people about as.
- 8:05Well, we've got a long way to go yet.
- 8:10I can see now why this ended up in your, you know, your top
- 8:13sixty stories, Fraser. Yeah, yeah.
- 8:17Although maybe a bit of cheap putting all fours, I mean it.
- 8:19Was a bit of a cheap, but at the same time, I think I mean, it's
- 8:23an interesting question because you know, obviously the the the
- 8:26pub, the idea of this 14, you know, we've got 14 episodes.
- 8:31Let's make it 1 big storyline, but then the propped it into
- 8:343-4. Sorry, you know, individual
- 8:37chunks. Now, is that the best way to do
- 8:40that? Or should they have just gone
- 8:42the full Dalek master plan and said, you know, this is just
- 8:45going to be the same story and it's just going to be go?
- 8:48On, I think because they, yeah, because they've got different
- 8:53production teams coming in because that's the way it's
- 8:56broken down. They haven't got the almost the
- 9:05facilities to make it as one long continuous story because
- 9:09they're not going to be able to keep the same crew for the
- 9:12whole, the whole time because that's not how the BBC works.
- 9:16So it's, yeah, it's kind of fudged because they can't do
- 9:21what they did in the 60s. And even then, unusual to
- 9:25structure a see a series of telly like this then, yeah.
- 9:29Absolutely. And even in master plan you've
- 9:31got two different designers, you know, working through the whole
- 9:35lot and and things like that. So you haven't got the complete
- 9:38continuity. But this is literally structured
- 9:42like a new series season, a beginning under one end, twist
- 9:45turns, reversal, shock exits, the works.
- 9:50And I'm not sure that the audience in 1986 were quite
- 9:56ready for that. I'm certainly not fandom.
- 9:58Interestingly, though, Luke Malloy, who's easily the
- 10:02youngest person I talked to on Hamster, so he came to this.
- 10:06So he watched the new series first and then he started
- 10:08experiencing Trial of a Time was one of his favorite seasons.
- 10:11He loves it. And he says for for those
- 10:14reasons, it's got the gist and turns.
- 10:16It's got the arc, you know, it's got the shock moments.
- 10:19I mean, it's interesting because you know, sort of prior to doing
- 10:23the season 3 or the 1st chunk of season 3 on I'm There Strictly,
- 10:31I went on Facebook and the missing episodes group on there
- 10:33and kind of put some feelings out as to, you know, why people
- 10:38thought Master Plan was so brilliant when I was struggling
- 10:42with it. And a lot of the feedback I got
- 10:46from that was around the idea of it just being a continuous story
- 10:50that it was just, you know, every week you didn't know what
- 10:53was going to be coming next. And possibly, you know, the with
- 10:57the Radio Times and whatnot in 86.
- 10:58It's, it's not going to be as easy as that.
- 11:02But you know, the idea of it's just been this one story and you
- 11:05know, this Daleks and it's a different planet this week and
- 11:08it's a different planet next week.
- 11:09I. Think because there's a lot of
- 11:11it just like this. And that idea of, you know, it
- 11:14just being not knowing what is going to be just this one
- 11:18continuous story was was really fascinating.
- 11:22It really kind of engrossed people that watched it go out
- 11:28live. So it's I think, you know,
- 11:31splitting it up into chunks is probably the better way because
- 11:34we're going to avoid the issue that I do have with don't master
- 11:37plan of just being 2. Does feel coherent now as a
- 11:40whole? It does.
- 11:41I think that the obviously the the the bridge and material for
- 11:44the courtrooms is. Exactly what's happening there,
- 11:49Trump top charges, all the Balliard's charges.
- 11:54I always thought Balliard meant learner court prosecutor.
- 11:57Well, not in your case, Sir. Your points of law are spurious,
- 12:01your case weak version of the irrelevance.
- 12:03And your reason is quite unsound.
- 12:05Quite unsound. All of this dialogue has
- 12:09penetrated my memory. But to go back to to the point
- 12:16you were talking about before we got this fantastic scene, I
- 12:21think what coloured this in 1986 and coloured Dr. and as coloured
- 12:28Doctor Who ever since is cancellation anxiety that we've
- 12:35come out of the cancellation and everyone is just worried about
- 12:39how this is going to come across to the people who aren't fans.
- 12:43And it's that constant worry the whole time.
- 12:46The the thing that I remember in all the reviews was is this
- 12:51going to lead to viewer fatigue? Are the viewers going to be
- 12:54fatigued by 14 episodes of this? Is this what and that worry
- 13:01penetrates all the audience went out at the time.
- 13:04I know they're low for Mysterious Planet, but come
- 13:07Ultimate Foe they're edging towards 6,000,000.
- 13:11So I go. I suppose the answer to that is
- 13:13no. I think the other thing that
- 13:14affected it then and now is fan visibility, which, oh.
- 13:18Absolutely, and the fans had done themselves a disservice.
- 13:23Yes. Through the cancellation and
- 13:25through particularly the reaction, the very public
- 13:29reaction to this and season 24. And it becomes and it moves from
- 13:34being a show for everyone on a Saturday night to a show for
- 13:38geeks. I think that's a show, not an
- 13:43everyday show. And I think that this this.
- 13:46Feels This feels like a a show for geeks and I don't think that
- 13:51as an objection. No, but I think season 24 is a
- 13:55Saturday night entertainment show with the biggest stars
- 13:59designed for a Saturday night that is shunted off to a
- 14:02graveyard shot on a slot on a Monday night.
- 14:05And I think Come Come 26, I think they're really going for
- 14:09the general audience again. Yes, and they're not getting it
- 14:12because no one knows that it's on.
- 14:15I mean, I think this feels very much like the Saturday night
- 14:18show as well. Like we've said, you know it's
- 14:20got those stars in it as big. Stars, yeah.
- 14:23Stars. Big stars.
- 14:24Lights are bright. It's got explosions, it's got,
- 14:29you know, gunfights. It's got big ass robots, funny
- 14:33lines. Yeah.
- 14:34It's, you know, it's it's very sort of, you know, season opener
- 14:40style. You know, it's this budget on
- 14:42screen. I think this is going for it.
- 14:44And I think this is, I wouldn't say it was necessarily for
- 14:49geeks. I think there's nothing.
- 14:52I mean, in terms of it's asking you, it is asking the audience
- 14:57to stick with this season. You can't really dip in and out.
- 15:03And I think that that is for a fan base, that is for a
- 15:06dedicated audience. And I think we're we're missing
- 15:11what what Barry Letts always says is the first night.
- 15:17We've got one first night to publicize the season.
- 15:20We haven't got the start of another story because we're
- 15:23billing it as the trial of a Time Lord Part Part 5 or the
- 15:28trial of a Time Lord Part 9. But it.
- 15:30Definitely has first nights in. Mind.
- 15:32Oh yeah, it does. But but it's not.
- 15:36But for the viewer you're saying, well it's a first night,
- 15:39but this is part 9 of something, so do I have to have?
- 15:42Maybe they should have given them different names.
- 15:44Whether they yeah, and probably they should have done so they
- 15:47just from a publicity point of view, but.
- 15:49Mysterious Planet's got two first nights because it's
- 15:52setting up the trial and the Mysterious.
- 15:54Planet yeah, right Nate Jewell says the the ratings go up so
- 15:59we'll have a we'll have a first night and it dips it dipped by
- 16:01the end by this point we're probably as low as you're ever
- 16:03going to get in the classic series in terms of ratings but.
- 16:06It's Battlefield. It's Battlefield.
- 16:08Yeah, it's not far off though. It's it's 3.7 as you know what
- 16:12feels like 3.43. .1 I think battlefield.
- 16:15Yeah, so it's, it's, it's kind of down there as low as you're
- 16:19ever going to get. But it starts picking up, you
- 16:22know, you get into Mindwarp and it starts attracting.
- 16:26So for all. But there might not be another
- 16:30big first night. You know, by the time sort of
- 16:33word of mouth starts getting round rabies or, you know,
- 16:35people are kind of drifting back to it, then yeah, we're staying.
- 16:39Interestingly, I think as cynical as some fans are, hello
- 16:43Stephen B about Perry's fate in Mind Warp.
- 16:46Yeah, it's in Terra, the Vervo as we start kicking 5 million
- 16:50viewers. So I think that did make the
- 16:53impact that JNT wanted. And it was the school holidays.
- 16:58Oh, OK, maybe there was that. As well.
- 17:00And maybe we all didn't have to do our homework.
- 17:02We skipped over a lot of scenes because we've been talking and I
- 17:05want to say there's another great example of empathy, Colin
- 17:08earlier when he said to Grail, don't blame yourself.
- 17:11And that's a very season 23 Colin.
- 17:14I really like that and the make up when they're burn.
- 17:18It's really quite. I was.
- 17:19Really nasty, yeah. It's a nice sort of stab of
- 17:22horror in a story that isn't really doing that.
- 17:24That there's a lovely photo of John Joan Sims on the phone with
- 17:28that makeup on. That is brilliant, Absolutely
- 17:31brilliant. Oh.
- 17:32Man, Basseer Wood. This scene, I love this.
- 17:37Talking about the meaning of life, this is a scene that could
- 17:40belong in Star Trek. Absolutely.
- 17:42I learnt about hubris from this and was able to.
- 17:46Yeah. False pride.
- 17:50Yeah. Luck.
- 17:50Howie. I took that to school, use that
- 17:54in my English lessons. But it it so clearly defines the
- 18:00doctor, this scene, you know, if you understood 110th of what
- 18:05life meant, you would want to save those people out there.
- 18:08And that's his mission statement.
- 18:10Yeah. And particularly this, this
- 18:12doctor at this point, yeah. There's possibly a little bit
- 18:16troubling as well, though, because it's kind of like the
- 18:18doctor value in organic life over machine life.
- 18:23What life is life, is it not? Well, yes, but.
- 18:27It is defined. It's, yeah, it's the definition
- 18:30of life, isn't it? It's, you know, it's, it's
- 18:33robots of death again, isn't it? It's, you know, D If it was D8
- 18:37you wouldn't be kind of saying AD 8 D 8 before.
- 18:40Whatever. But I like, yeah, but I like
- 18:41Drastro coming back and saying, well, robots are superior then.
- 18:46So obviously we we deserve to live.
- 18:49We're doing Star Trek technically, because it's not to
- 18:52say no. The needs of the many, actually
- 18:55the one should sacrifice themselves.
- 18:57But that's the measure of a man, aren't we as well?
- 19:00That's not the way he goes about it.
- 19:02The week goes about it just by purely saying, well, you don't
- 19:04come because you're not organic. If he was, you know, doing the
- 19:07whole Spock speech, I think that would be the next level up.
- 19:12I've never really considered that in this scene, though.
- 19:16I just. I just see the doctor fighting
- 19:18for human life. Yeah.
- 19:20And I will never say that's a bad thing.
- 19:25It's it's it's probably like a new series sensibility that, you
- 19:29know, the doctor was more and aware of these things and more,
- 19:33you know, it kind of goes again, what we're seeing about like the
- 19:35Vervoids. You know, when you know, you you
- 19:39just assume, yeah, the Vervoids are bad, so they must be wiped
- 19:41out. And you know, and you know that
- 19:45to give you that little twist and make you think where there's
- 19:47no one. Once you've had that bit to
- 19:49think, you can go back and look at this and go, yeah, if we're
- 19:53going to do that with the Vervoids, we'll kind of coming
- 19:55up by the same the draft room. There's low inside.
- 20:00The purpose of life is too big to be knowable. 1,000,000
- 20:02computers couldn't solve that one.
- 20:07It is, it's poetry. I love it and he says it
- 20:09brilliantly. You're right side.
- 20:11You could see him on the stage making.
- 20:13This. Absolutely.
- 20:13Yeah, It's it's yeah. It's like he's playing a
- 20:17Shakespeare argument. You've controlled your point as
- 20:21Little Empire for too long. You can't see anything beyond
- 20:24it. I mean, he's, he's sort of doing
- 20:27the Captain Kirk thing, isn't he trying?
- 20:28To convince the robots. To sacrifice himself.
- 20:32That's the last Star Trek reference I mentioned.
- 20:35Shout out for Diba telling there, for Glitter for telling
- 20:37Dibber that Favour Homes Rabbit should see the doors.
- 20:40Yeah, yeah. But the most important of all is
- 20:44no fun right it? Is funny.
- 20:50Oh, there's a very funny bit at the minute in the in this shoe,
- 20:55isn't it? Where his face gets covered in
- 20:56Mashed potato? They're all just standing there
- 20:57with these terrible beams. They're going everywhere.
- 21:00How? He's talking about the
- 21:01tradesman's entrance. I think you should ask Soy about
- 21:05that. I think you should ask Deborah
- 21:09about that. I would love to.
- 21:17Come on Colin, you can do it. That was good in this, though, I
- 21:22think not just in terms of, you know, the relationship between
- 21:27with Nicola and Colin, and I would have played that.
- 21:29But I think this is a very good story for Perry when you stop
- 21:32and look at it, because you know she's very engaged.
- 21:35You know, there's no pervert trying to lock her up and marry
- 21:41her or anything. That's quite refreshing.
- 21:43It's very refreshing, someone trying to marry her off, but
- 21:45it's the woman. Yeah, it's, but it's, it's, it's
- 21:50a throwaway lane. It's not the the purpose of the
- 21:53plot. Hashtag Time Lash.
- 21:56No. And if this was season 22, Draft
- 21:58Row would find her pleasing. And yeah, wanted to breed a
- 22:01super race of Perry's from her or whatever.
- 22:06Yeah. You know, apart from having that
- 22:09brilliant reaction to finding out it's Earth in Episode 1, you
- 22:12can have her tagging along with Glitch.
- 22:14She's kind of got her whole subplot in Episode 2, like away
- 22:17from the Doctor. And I don't think she tags as
- 22:20much as as usual. She's, she's actually got a bit
- 22:22of urgency, especially here where she's like trying to storm
- 22:25the castle and. You say that door, it's that
- 22:27bloody wall, Adric's wall again, isn't it?
- 22:30It's always that ball. Do you know that bit is so
- 22:34theatrical where Colin went? That's Perry.
- 22:42Oh oh, they have great fun watching him getting covered in
- 22:44that mash. On the commentary, Adam Black
- 22:46was having a wonderful time with Colin and Nicola and Tony Selby.
- 22:52Apparently they had lots of pudding in competitions.
- 22:55On vacations, yes, that's right. Yeah.
- 22:57Johnny Simmons was very good, but Johnny Colin won.
- 23:00Yeah, of course he did. Look at him, I figure of a man.
- 23:04I could beat him. Was that a challenge, Fraser?
- 23:08Oh, yes, OK. I've seen Fraser repudding.
- 23:18Because he won't sacrifice himself.
- 23:20Well, that seems imminently sensible.
- 23:24If I'm doomed, then you're all he's.
- 23:28Like a prop up on villain. Now, now come on mate, go and
- 23:33get your handbag and I'll take you off to the ship.
- 23:36Let's go. Oh yeah, the black light.
- 23:41Like a fucking panto now, Yeah. On the ship, Dipper, Yeah.
- 23:46And it's it's, it's like. But it works.
- 23:50It's a line of the dialogue, isn't it, that, you know,
- 23:52couldn't succeeds where the doctor's attempt at reason.
- 23:54Yeah, this fails because you're not going to be able to reason
- 23:57with with Drathro because he's logic.
- 23:59And you can't defeat, you know, logic when you know you're
- 24:04convinced that you're right. But you can fool.
- 24:07You can fool it. The look between the doctor and
- 24:10Perry when they clawed on to what?
- 24:12Yeah. What is it?
- 24:17It's strange how? What does he say?
- 24:20It's strange how when it's low coming succeeds.
- 24:24It's like you when you did that strictly and you were never
- 24:26going to convince them, so you just made-up some lines.
- 24:31No, I do that at least once an episode.
- 24:33Sometimes I get caught out, other times I don't.
- 24:37There's so many Jodie episodes where I've said, Oh yeah, that
- 24:39was explained in that scene. Weren't you paying attention?
- 24:44Low cunning succeeds where intelligent reasoning fails.
- 24:50I do think as well in terms of like the season starting off
- 24:53with this great mystery but light story and then going into
- 24:58something as oppressive and dark as Mind Warp, and then having
- 25:03something as sort of fun and pacey as Terror of the Vervoids
- 25:07and then doing the sort of weird sapphire and steel stuff in
- 25:10Ultimate Foe. It is showing lots of shades of
- 25:12Doctor Who. Yeah.
- 25:17And I think they kind of had to make this a bit lighter, didn't
- 25:19they? Because that was one of the.
- 25:21Well, that was, yeah, that was the brief, wasn't it?
- 25:23That was the only thing they'd got to cling on to.
- 25:27Yeah, less violent, more funny. And then didn't they get wrong
- 25:30for making it too funny? It's so lame then pressing all
- 25:33these buttons, but when I was 13 this was so exciting.
- 25:37Well, no. Colin trying to press those
- 25:40those plunges bits down was was really good and.
- 25:43I like the fact you've got all the lights going and then the
- 25:46sound sort of raising up, isn't it?
- 25:48So it does feel sort of apocalyptic.
- 25:51Oh, and this line here, I'm going to say it again.
- 25:54It's the ultimate Doctor line. I did my best.
- 25:57I only hope it's enough. It's enough.
- 26:00If there was a line that sums up the Doctor, that's surely it.
- 26:05Oh, poor mud. Poor Balasar.
- 26:09Oh, I love this. Oh, when he.
- 26:12Goes red. Yeah, yeah.
- 26:14And then? Really good.
- 26:15There's all this steam coming off him like his molten metal.
- 26:20There is some money on the screen.
- 26:22No. Definitely.
- 26:24Yeah, look at that. Oh, don't touch him.
- 26:28Do you know fellas, I think we might have a tasty little Kitty
- 26:30for the next venture. Well, coming down your way next,
- 26:36aren't we? Well for location wise.
- 26:40Oh yeah, we're just going to the naked beach and home.
- 26:47Oh, next to Jancy's house, you say?
- 26:50What a surprise. You're Silicate.
- 26:55They they have set up divots for return here, haven't they?
- 26:58They have, yeah, and then they don't take it up.
- 27:01Although he's in one of the books, isn't he?
- 27:03Yes, mission impractical. That's right, yeah.
- 27:06I think that's David A Mcinty explaining why he's not in
- 27:11Ultimate Foe. Oh, this is nice when the two
- 27:13boys say fresh air. Those clothes are not going to
- 27:17be practical for going outside. Come on twinks, get your S&M
- 27:23masks on. Oh, and.
- 27:26Still not. Perhaps one day we'll find the
- 27:33habitat of the Canadian goose. I love it.
- 27:41Oh, does he do a Davidson joke at the end of this scene as
- 27:44well? When he's like, oh, it's no,
- 27:45it's that way. Oh yeah.
- 27:46Yeah, it's. That way, no, he's putting his
- 27:50arm around her. Page 1, Chapter 1, paragraph
- 27:57one, as they say. Take your people up to the
- 28:00surface where they but nice uplifting ending.
- 28:03You didn't get many of those in Season 22.
- 28:06Travel with hope, isn't it? Yeah.
- 28:10It is on him. Farewell, my loquacious friend.
- 28:17Now look here fellas, there's one or two mysteries that we
- 28:19haven't solved in this. Story Oh yeah ping.
- 28:22Just pay attention audience. You haven't answered these for a
- 28:26reason. Very.
- 28:28So what was that box that Gibson Dibble, we're so interested in
- 28:30him. No, he's not going.
- 28:36To answer. I asked you a question.
- 28:40Well, who knows because literally, literally at this
- 28:43point, nobody knows at this point, you know mid.
- 28:48So what was to say it was early April, mid-april going into to
- 28:53May and the end hasn't been written.
- 28:56Now, of all the smart Collins, this is the smuggest.
- 29:00Yes, it's not many people that can claim to have saved the
- 29:03entire universe. Sorry, I'm not stalled out.
- 29:12What do you mean the end? It's not written.
- 29:13It was. It went out and it's 95. 6. 6.
- 29:20No, because they hadn't written it while they were making this.
- 29:22Oh. I see what you're saying.
- 29:24Yeah, because obviously Bob Holmes was writing it and he, I
- 29:28think he's a couple of weeks after this finishes filming.
- 29:32So they are, you know, recording this now without the end, you
- 29:39know, the. 60s Doctor Who isn't it, you know.
- 29:42It's not not quite as close to the bone as that, but it is
- 29:46very, very close to it was making it up as you go along,
- 29:52which is, which is again, it's one of the problems with the
- 29:58with the story, isn't it? That, you know, they have,
- 30:01because they've made this switch halfway through the production
- 30:05time of yeah, we'll scrap those stories and we'll bring new ones
- 30:07in. And you know, that one's not
- 30:09good enough. And no, we don't want that one.
- 30:10And no, we don't. That one will not have that one
- 30:12either. It's, you know, it gets to the
- 30:15point where you make in the first part and you don't know
- 30:18what's happening at the end. And that shows really, doesn't
- 30:20it? But considering the nightmare of
- 30:23Ultimate Foe, you know, being written by two writing teams, it
- 30:27culminates well because what you're all the mysteries here,
- 30:30which are paid off in the first part of Ultimate Foe, You've got
- 30:34Perry's death, which is dealt with in the second part of
- 30:37Ultimate Foe. You've got the genocide stuff
- 30:39which they talk about in Ultimate.
- 30:41So it does kind of all come together.
- 30:44Yeah, it does. And it's it's it's kind of
- 30:47credit to the big As and Jane that they managed to, you know,
- 30:53pull some together that does pay everything off out of what pop
- 31:00homes and Eric say would have kind of left them behind and
- 31:03what they're allowed to out of what they've left them behind.
- 31:06Hashtag me spitting, but we'll come to that.
- 31:09Sometimes doing these hamster commentaries with you 2, I feel
- 31:11as if I have got the Inquisitor and the Valley art here with me.
- 31:15When they said to Colin at the end there, I keep calling him
- 31:17Colin. So the Doctor, like I know him,
- 31:21was it for the time being. I think you've said enough, Said
- 31:24enough. I have a great deal more to say.
- 31:29Oh, how wonderful. I really enjoyed that.
- 31:33Just to keep on track guys, that is 3 to one.
- 31:37Yeah, yes. Quick zoom, zoom.
- 31:40And that is the classic zoom intercolumn.
- 31:43That's the one that you get that that.
- 31:45Gift. That's yeah, that's the gift,
- 31:46isn't? It do you mind if your face
- 31:51fills the frame? No, go ahead.
- 31:53It's a magnificent face, my boys.
- 31:56Well, I mean, I thought that was fabulous, but.
- 32:00I've thoroughly enjoyed. That we do need to find three
- 32:02reasons a piece. Let's start with sigh and then
- 32:08we'll go to Fraser and then I'll take up the rear stop.
- 32:12It. Which is very unusual for me if
- 32:18I want to. OK.
- 32:23Fine Fraser, you go first, sigh. You go 2nd and I'll be up your
- 32:27rear. No one's bringing it up there
- 32:31yet. OK, Oh, shame.
- 32:34Sorry. Dominic Glynn, I'm going to say
- 32:39I'm going to go straight here. If nothing else, Dominic Glynn
- 32:44gives this season a different feel.
- 32:47So it's very it's it's moving on from the Radiophonic workshop
- 32:55scores, although we've still got a final radiophonic workshop
- 32:58score to come. So, but I think his incidental
- 33:03music give this cohesion and drama and it drives the action
- 33:09along really well. He's still learning his trade.
- 33:12We're going to hit his peak later on in the McCoy years
- 33:16where he comes in just for three episodes a year but aces those 3
- 33:21episodes brilliantly. But it all starts here, and he's
- 33:25written into JNT on the chance that he might get a chance to do
- 33:30this. And JNT takes him up on it and
- 33:33then says, oh, and you could do the theme as well.
- 33:35Why not? You know, I think he does a good
- 33:38job and I think he adds a lot to the atmosphere of this story.
- 33:43I heard in an interview him say he was doing the incidental
- 33:47music in his bedroom. Yeah, on a hired keyboard.
- 33:51That's wonderful, isn't it? And is it immortalized now?
- 33:55Yeah. So, yeah, I I think he's he's
- 33:58really good and he's, he's learning as he goes, but he's
- 34:01doing a good job anyway. And I think by the time we get
- 34:05to the ultimate foe, he's developed hugely just by
- 34:11learning his trade on this. By the time you get to survival,
- 34:15he's delivered. Some amazing.
- 34:16Music we've ever heard at Happiness Patrol.
- 34:19His free scores for the McCoy years are are magnificent.
- 34:22Dragon fire, isn't it? The other one, yeah.
- 34:24Yeah. And you know, and just to also
- 34:27just mention, this is the first Doctor Who score that is
- 34:31released in its entirety on cassette from the from the
- 34:37Doctor Who Appreciation Society. I bought that cassette and I
- 34:41played it and I played it and played it.
- 34:42It was wonderful. I do wish, I do wish they had
- 34:46done the same with the mind War One.
- 34:48I think that's one of the best scores ever.
- 34:51Yes. Well, yeah, unfortunately the
- 34:52tapes are lost, which is a a real shame, but there we go.
- 34:56So that's my first choice. And well, because I wanted to
- 35:04pick Dominic Glenn and because I feel we haven't talked about it
- 35:09enough, I'm going to pick the theme music.
- 35:14OK. By Dominic Glenn Because it is a
- 35:18It's really good. Obviously, yes, I know you're
- 35:21attached to Peter Howell, you know, just as much as I am
- 35:25attached to Kef's version. But you know, this one is, it's
- 35:30just a really sound reimagining of, of what Peter Howe has done.
- 35:36It's kind of like, you know, taking it and taking the best
- 35:39bits out and then just giving it a squirrel, but nothing some
- 35:42extra bits. And, you know, it's got a real
- 35:44rhythm to it. You know, that really kind of
- 35:49comes through, but there's lots of sort of mysterious.
- 35:54Sound effects on it are great. Yeah, the middle 8 just pops as
- 35:58well. So, you know, I really like this
- 36:00version of the theme. And you know, it's, it's a bit
- 36:04of a shame that we only got 14 episodes out of it, but you
- 36:07know, we've got it, we've got it now it's on Spotify and go and
- 36:10listen to it for 6 minutes. And you know what?
- 36:12I quite like that because that gives this season its own
- 36:16identity because it's the only one that has this theme.
- 36:21So, you know, that's that kind of makes it special.
- 36:25Yeah. That music always makes me think
- 36:28of Evelyn Smythe because they used the this, you know, when
- 36:33they stopped using the Tom Baker theme, and they would always use
- 36:36this theme for those fantastic, even Smythe stories.
- 36:39And so every time I hear it now, I just think of Maggie Staples
- 36:42straight away. Yeah.
- 36:43And that makes you feel happy, of course.
- 36:46Fabulous. Well, you know who I'm going to
- 36:49choose, and that is Colin Baker. 1993 gave me two parental
- 36:57figures to replace my frankly disappointing father.
- 37:02I watched this and fell in love with Colin Baker's Doctor, for
- 37:06reasons I've detailed elsewhere, but mostly because he was a man
- 37:11who could express himself in a way that my father couldn't, in
- 37:15a man that always tried his best in a way my father didn't.
- 37:20I just loved it. He was funny, he was charming,
- 37:23he was witty, he was intelligent, he was for the
- 37:27people. I just fell head over heels and
- 37:30he was my favorite from that day to now.
- 37:33I still love Colin the best. A side note, the other person
- 37:37was Benjamin Cisco over on Dick Space 9, who is just an amazing
- 37:42dad. He's not.
- 37:43I know he's not a real person, but he may as well be.
- 37:46Yeah. So I know I've detailed via
- 37:49many, many quotes in this and I'm sure in episodes to come, I
- 37:55think he was a stunning choice to play the Doctor.
- 37:57I think they did make some bomb creative choices, which means he
- 38:03wasn't given the run that he deserved.
- 38:05I think he's more than proven he was up to the task and through
- 38:11his TV performances and especially his audio
- 38:14performances, he's proven he's pretty much the best Doctor of
- 38:17all. So Colin Baker is my choice.
- 38:20Good choice. Yeah, that's a good choice.
- 38:23I like that. Thank you.
- 38:27It's very tempting to say Michael Jason here, but I don't
- 38:30think we've seen the best of him yet.
- 38:32And I might, I think that might be a choice for later on.
- 38:36So OK, I'm good to go with the next obvious thing, the opening
- 38:42model shot, which I know is possibly a bit of grand folly by
- 38:48spending that much money on sort of a sequence that is less than
- 38:53a minute long, but what a sequence.
- 38:57And I'm so glad they did because that really is it still looks
- 39:02fantastic. I've seen the model and the
- 39:06model itself is really disappointing.
- 39:09It's so much better filmed than it is in real life.
- 39:14It's a beautiful model. It is beautifully done.
- 39:18It's got the TARDIS spinning in right at the end with the
- 39:22wonderful white beam. It's so memorable.
- 39:26And you know what? Who cares if they blew so much
- 39:30of the budget on that? I think maybe they did need that
- 39:35one thing. But the problem is you're always
- 39:38going to have that. Well, how do you follow that?
- 39:40And then we go into Doctor Who straight away, you know, But
- 39:46just that model shot with that music is such a brilliant
- 39:51opening. As a mission statement at the
- 39:54start of the season, I mean, it beats deck chairs.
- 39:58Sorry. Sorry.
- 39:59Yeah. No, no, no, no, no.
- 40:00It does. It's it's it is absolutely
- 40:03wonderful. I have been to see the original
- 40:10Star Wars movies at the cinema over the last couple of weeks
- 40:13and I have been very impressed with the production value of
- 40:16them. I'm not sure it's a single
- 40:21modern shot in those movies. I would say as good as that
- 40:25opening trial scene. I don't think there is.
- 40:28That's because you're watching the CGI versions from 1996 and
- 40:33not the original versions because they never show the
- 40:36versions with the model shots anymore.
- 40:39Why are the model shots better? Yes.
- 40:43Oh, OK. But they're not necessarily
- 40:46matted in so well. I mean, the joy of Star Wars is
- 40:49throughout those movies you've got about 25 minutes of very
- 40:53good model work, and it's not to who you get 35 seconds of
- 40:57extremely good model work. But you know, I just wanted to
- 41:01say that anyway. Sorry, Fraser, back to you.
- 41:02You. Know the models are brilliant in
- 41:05this and it's kind of you know when 86 now and 88 Red Dwarf
- 41:10starts and like Red Dwarf is kind of yeah of BBC special
- 41:16effects and their model work and you know you can see like the
- 41:20groundwork being need here and dragon face got really good
- 41:23modern shots as well doesn't it? And you know, from here on, you
- 41:27do really see. The model work is is really well
- 41:31apart from verboards maybe. Unless you're going to watch the
- 41:35special edition. That right.
- 41:39So for my second choice, I know we haven't talked about too
- 41:42much, but I think Michael, Jason is really good in this.
- 41:49Finished. I barely started.
- 41:52No, it's, it's, it's, it's the whole kind of setup, the whole
- 41:55courtroom setup readings. It really it works for me.
- 41:59There's one or two points in the story where the interruptions
- 42:04are a little bit jarring and kind of taking you out of the
- 42:07story. And it's, it's very self
- 42:09referential. You know, it's like, you know,
- 42:11and there's one we're talking about.
- 42:13I have the big set to and I mean, because it was like, can
- 42:16we stop this banter and get back to the story now?
- 42:20And so I think the the the courtroom scenes are a lot more
- 42:27knowing than I realized the first time I watched it or
- 42:30whatever. When you need to pick that up.
- 42:32We watching for this. I think, like I said, there's
- 42:35that sort of Ying and Yang of of Colin big and Michael Jason as
- 42:41the the very loud, flamboyant, colourful Dr. and this sort of
- 42:46very still menacing Valliard as brooding figure, you know,
- 42:53laying off each other beautifully.
- 42:55And obviously in the middle you've got Linda Bellingham just
- 42:58being Judge Judy without the kick offs and trying to keep
- 43:04control of all of them. And the, the dialogue just is,
- 43:08is fantastic in these scenes. It's really gives Colin the
- 43:11opportunity to be bombastic and be the the passionate.
- 43:19You know, his his doctor is all about just sort of it's easy.
- 43:22He wears that righteousness like a multi colored coat.
- 43:28It's all on his sleeve. He's got this moral core, which
- 43:33is red hot. You can actually see it glowing
- 43:35off him in the courtroom. Gives him this opportunity to do
- 43:38that. It gives him the opportunity to
- 43:40be a Serbic and sarcastic, but it also has some really quiet
- 43:46moments. You know, it gives them a chance
- 43:48to be a little bit more reflective and we'll see a lot
- 43:50more of it obviously in in Mind Warp as well.
- 43:53And but yeah, what them scenes really sing for me.
- 43:58And I think we're going to see a very different use of the
- 44:02courtroom in the next 4 episodes, and that will be
- 44:05fascinating to watch. The funniest bit is where Colin
- 44:09just goes. I'm Lord president of Gallifrey,
- 44:12you can't put me on trial. And then he goes to walk out the
- 44:15door. The foot, the footage was really
- 44:18the start. Where he walks in the valley was
- 44:21I was beginning to think you'd got lost.
- 44:23It's like it's took him 30 seconds to walk from.
- 44:25He's taught us there and gone and goes.
- 44:26It's hard to get lost in a corridor mate.
- 44:30Just like the random insults, smugness does not become you.
- 44:33That is an irrelevant observation.
- 44:37And in fact, that leads to my second point, which is the
- 44:40dialogue. I think this is, I genuinely
- 44:43think this is one of the wittiest Doctor Who scripts, and
- 44:45I think it's one of the most quotable Doctor Who scripts as
- 44:48well. I remember when I wrote my
- 44:50review for Doctor Who reviews, my dialogue triumph section was
- 44:55enormous, half the script basically.
- 44:57And I started putting the the lines of dialogue within the
- 45:00other sections of the review just because there were so many
- 45:03great lines. I think the only other one where
- 45:05I had to do that was Time Warrior, another Robert Holmes.
- 45:09Yeah, really witty, really funny.
- 45:12Tony Selby says it best on the commentary when he goes.
- 45:15I love all the flowery language, all this sort of Dickensian wit.
- 45:20He goes, I love it and you can see it.
- 45:22He's and they're all getting it. Everyone's got great lines in
- 45:25this and I think if Doctor Who is funny, if it's witty, it can
- 45:31cover over any sort of problems that are elsewhere.
- 45:34And in Part 3 we did say that it's this sort of run on the
- 45:36spot a bit, but it was very, very funny all the same.
- 45:40So yeah, there Robert Holmes is not on his last legs.
- 45:44I mean, he is in terms of his health, but not in terms of his
- 45:47creativity and his humour. Absolutely.
- 45:52Bet I'm going to go for the location work because I think
- 45:59it's a very nicely chosen location.
- 46:02They found an actual Iron Age village to film in which looks
- 46:06brilliant. The village itself is is nicely
- 46:09shot and then you've got the shots actually in the Hut itself
- 46:14on location, which which really adds so they can have proper
- 46:17fire, they can have the things that they can't do in the studio
- 46:20because of that. And then they can recreate
- 46:22another one, not quite so successfully in the studio, but
- 46:26I think Nicholas Mallett shoots the location work really well.
- 46:30As we said, the chase at the end of Part 2 is really well done.
- 46:33There's lots of different angles, lots of wide shots.
- 46:36I love the shot where they're all walking sort of after the
- 46:41chase and the doctors explaining things to Perry, but it's all
- 46:45done in long shot. And that's really different to
- 46:48what we'd usually get, which is usually right in front of them
- 46:53walk some camera sort of backing away as they're walking towards
- 46:57it. And so it gives it a really
- 46:59different feeling. And I think that's a bit of a
- 47:01bit of dynamism in those scenes and it comes across really well.
- 47:06And like Joe said, you can't be Doctor Who running around in the
- 47:09woods. No.
- 47:11And I was about to say a wintry wood, but I suppose it's a
- 47:13spring wood. Yeah.
- 47:15Oh, it's fabulous. It just reminds me of my
- 47:17childhood so much. My next thing then is going to
- 47:25be Glitz and Dipper and obviously we've talked about the
- 47:29dialogue there. Julian, it's your 100% right.
- 47:31This is spotless from, you know, start to finish, Rod, But, you
- 47:39know, Glitz and Deba are such a great pair.
- 47:43And I think Tony Selby described this as Glitz as author daily in
- 47:48space. Yeah, I've got that sort of mind
- 47:51dynamic of the, you know, the charm, the the, you know, the
- 47:59flowy language in the the seals part and all the rest of it in
- 48:03this sort of more stoic muscle for hire.
- 48:07If they buy, it's a pair and that really works.
- 48:08And, you know, watching them, you know, spar off against each
- 48:14other, you know, they've been more of the straight man, but
- 48:19still haven't. He's you know, Deb has still got
- 48:21loads to add. You know, like I said, there's
- 48:23my favorite line comes from Deborah.
- 48:25I love that bit, the X at the end of Part 2 where he's like,
- 48:28no, squeeze the trigger, don't pull it.
- 48:30He's giving advice to someone trying to shoot them.
- 48:32And it's a little background detail in a big scene, isn't it?
- 48:37Yeah, and it's just the interplay between those two are,
- 48:41is, is fantastic. I really don't know why we don't
- 48:44talk about these two And you know, you know, in the same sort
- 48:50of way that we talk about like Jago and Lightfoot and you know,
- 48:54the really up there for me. I don't you know, you can see, I
- 48:59don't know why they never did. And but the glitz in there by
- 49:02Big Finish box set is going to be something else.
- 49:06They've done everything else. Yeah, and that's that's got a
- 49:09hell of a lot more legs than Jago and Lightfoot for 14 boxes.
- 49:11We've had a glitz story now. Now Tony Selby is no longer with
- 49:15us, you know. That's just a book.
- 49:17Yeah, unfortunately we're not going to get it no matter how
- 49:20many times I see it. But, you know, let you imagine
- 49:23Mason run wild with that glitz and dibber and series and and
- 49:29really just revel in the awesomeness of mints and dibber.
- 49:35So he says in episode 1, a deep rooted maladjustant.
- 49:39My psychiatrist said I'm unable to cope with the constant
- 49:43instabilities of life. Mind you, I had just decided I
- 49:46had just attempted to kill him. It's a great.
- 49:51Well, my last thing then is I think I would like to just point
- 49:55out again the two very reflective moments that Colin
- 49:59has in Episode 1 and Episode 4, because I think they're real
- 50:03highlights of his era. He gets a number of very strong
- 50:07scenes in this season, but that's him at his absolute
- 50:12gentlest and most empathetic and most reflective.
- 50:17And the dialogue is just golden in those scenes.
- 50:21Yeah. So.
- 50:22So Colin talking about planets come and go and then him talking
- 50:26about basically the meaning of life at the end of the story.
- 50:30Yeah. Magnificent.
- 50:33I am going to have to add one more thing all.
- 50:37The time, always. I'm not going to make you go.
- 50:39We will allow one more thing, yeah.
- 50:41One more thing, because it does need to be said now, is the the
- 50:45new dynamic between the doctor and Perry.
- 50:49You know that that is just so, you know, after so long of, you
- 50:55know, bickering and, you know, running around and just
- 50:58generally not being the nicest to each other and to have them
- 51:02come in and be so charming with each other and just so cute and
- 51:10cuddly together. And you know the the absolute
- 51:13change in their relationship is a breath of fresh air does.
- 51:17Show how it could have been, doesn't.
- 51:18It Yeah, it does. Yeah, absolutely.
- 51:20I will say go, go watch on its own by itself, episode 4 of Twin
- 51:26Dilemma, you know, don't watch the other three, just watch
- 51:30episode 4. Have a look at Colin Baker, the
- 51:33way he's playing the Doctor in episode 4 and think, why did we
- 51:37not have that Doctor throughout 22?
- 51:40Because it goes ramps it right back up again and attacked the
- 51:42Cybermen. You ought to have you know that
- 51:45more gentle and more this beautiful relationship would
- 51:52have been would have been. So I love it here.
- 51:55Women are finished. Well, we may finish.
- 51:59I mean, I don't really need to say where are we going next?
- 52:02Well. I've got some finished.
- 52:05Good. We've probably started.
- 52:08I've got some good news and I've got some bad news for you
- 52:10sailing. Go on.
- 52:12So the good news is we're going to the seaside.
- 52:15Yeah, in Brighton, the. Bad news is you might be changed
- 52:20to the rocks. The bad news is, and I'll, I'll,
- 52:23I'll explain this more in detail, but we'll probably even
- 52:27shouldn't be telling you now, but we are going to run into an
- 52:29old enemy of yours. I'm going to take the
- 52:36opportunity in Mine War, while not just to explain why I think
- 52:39it's one of the very best kind of egg stories, but also to
- 52:45explain why I think Brian Bessick is one of the best ever
- 52:48performances he does. Who?
- 52:50Is the answer because he's Brian Blessed?
- 52:53Yes, yes, he's the only person that could shout louder than
- 52:59Colin Baker. He is Dorf and you are scum.
- 53:03Sims gives it a go. I think John Sims is trained.
- 53:06I think yeah, so, and I am going to explain why it is
- 53:12simultaneously the worst and the best Doctor Who store.
- 53:19On that enticing note, gentlemen, thank you very much
- 53:22for our first step into trial of a Time Lord.
- 53:24To be continued.
