- 0:11Hello, friends. It's Sean here.
- 0:13It's Monday. It's the 18th of May.
- 0:18Who knew? That sounds very close to the
- 0:20middle of the year, doesn't it? It feels like, oh man, just a
- 0:23month ago that we were just starting out the year and here
- 0:25we are coming toward the end of the fifth month.
- 0:29And the other thing we're coming toward the end of, in fact, we
- 0:32have reached the end of, is today we will be reading the
- 0:36very last chapter of the book of Joshua.
- 0:39And I know some of you had said, oh, Sean, this is hard going.
- 0:43When do we get into the end? Well, friends, we've made it
- 0:45through. It's a very different kind of
- 0:47book, isn't it? It's certainly not the dynamic,
- 0:51easily transferable into our lives, Bible reading that we
- 0:55often enjoy from the New Testament.
- 0:57But it is still part of the story of God journeying with his
- 1:00people. But then from tomorrow, we will
- 1:03dive into the New Testament and begin reading through the
- 1:06incredible story from the book of Acts, just in time for
- 1:10Pentecost Sunday that's coming up.
- 1:13So Are you ready? We are going to read the very
- 1:16last chapter today where God's people renew their covenant with
- 1:22God. And then it is the end of a
- 1:25generation with the death of some significant people from
- 1:29this part of their story as things get beautifully wrapped
- 1:32up in Joshua chapter 24. Then Joshua summoned all the
- 1:47tribes of Israel to Shechem, including their elders, leaders,
- 1:50judges and officers. So they came and presented
- 1:54themselves to God. Joshua said to the people, This
- 1:58is what the Lord, the God of Israel says.
- 2:02Long ago your ancestors, including Terror, the father of
- 2:07Abraham and Nahor, lived beyond the Euphrates River, and they
- 2:11worshipped other gods. But I took your ancestor Abraham
- 2:16from the land beyond the Euphrates and led him into the
- 2:20land of Canaan. I gave him many descendants
- 2:24through his son Isaac. To Isaac I gave Jacob and Esau,
- 2:29To Esau I gave the mountains of Seya, while Jacob and his
- 2:33children went down into Egypt. Then I sent Moses an Aaron, and
- 2:39I brought terrible plagues on Egypt.
- 2:42And afterwards I brought you out as a free people.
- 2:47But when your ancestors arrived at the Red Sea, the Egyptians
- 2:50chased after you with Chariots and charioteers.
- 2:54When your ancestors cried out to the Lord, I put darkness between
- 2:58you and the Egyptians. I brought the sea crashing down
- 3:02on the Egyptians, drowning them with your very own eyes.
- 3:07You saw what I did then You lived in the wilderness for many
- 3:11years. Finally I brought you into the
- 3:14land of the Amorites on the east side of the Jordan.
- 3:18They fought against you, but I destroyed them before you.
- 3:22I gave you victory over them, and you took possession of their
- 3:26land. Then Balak, son of Zippor, king
- 3:30of Moab, started a war against Israel.
- 3:33He summoned Balaam, son of Bior, to curse you, but I would not
- 3:38listen to him. Instead, I made Balaam bless
- 3:41you, and so I rescued you from Balak.
- 3:45When you crossed the Jordan River and came to Jericho, the
- 3:49men of Jericho fought against you, as did the Amorites, the
- 3:52Perizzites, the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Girgashites, the
- 3:57Hivites, and the Jebusites. But I gave you victory over
- 4:01them, and I sent terror ahead of you to drive out the 2 kings of
- 4:06the Amorites. It was not your swords or bows
- 4:09that brought you victory. I gave you the land you had not
- 4:14worked on. I gave you towns you did not
- 4:17build, the towns where you are now living.
- 4:21I gave you vineyards and olive Groves for food, though you did
- 4:25not plant them. So fear the Lord and serve him
- 4:28wholeheartedly. Put away forever the idols your
- 4:33ancestors worshipped when they lived beyond the Euphrates River
- 4:37and in Egypt. Serve the Lord alone.
- 4:41But if you refuse to serve the Lord, then choose today whom you
- 4:46will serve. Would you prefer the gods your
- 4:49ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or will it be the
- 4:52gods of the Amorites in whose lands you now live?
- 4:56But As for me and my family, we will serve the Lord, the people
- 5:02replied. We would never abandoned the
- 5:05Lord and serve other gods, for the Lord our God is the one who
- 5:08rescued us and our ancestors from slavery in the land of
- 5:12Egypt. He performed mighty miracles
- 5:15before our very eyes as we travelled through the wilderness
- 5:18among our enemies. He preserved us.
- 5:22It was the Lord who drove out the Amorites and the other
- 5:25nations living here in the land. So we too will serve the Lord,
- 5:29for He alone is our God. Then Joshua warned the people,
- 5:35You are not able to serve the Lord, for he is a holy and
- 5:40jealous God. He will not forgive your
- 5:42rebellion and your sins. If you abandon the Lord and
- 5:46serve other gods, he will turn against you and destroy you,
- 5:50even though he has been so good to you.
- 5:54But the people answered Joshua, No, we will serve the Lord.
- 5:59You are a witness to your own decision, Joshua said.
- 6:03You have chosen to serve the Lord.
- 6:06Yes, they replied, We are witnesses to what we have said.
- 6:10All right then, Joshua said, destroy the idols among you and
- 6:15turn your hearts to the Lord, the God of Israel.
- 6:19The people said to Joshua, We will serve the Lord our God.
- 6:23We will obey him alone. Sir Joshua made a covenant with
- 6:28the people that day at Shechem, committing them to follow the
- 6:31decrees and regulations of the Lord.
- 6:34Joshua recorded these things in the book of God's instructions.
- 6:38As a reminder of their agreement.
- 6:40He took a huge stone and rolled it beneath the terebinth tree
- 6:44beside the Tabernacle of the Lord.
- 6:47Joshua said to all the people, This stone has heard everything
- 6:52the Lord said to us. It will be a witness to testify
- 6:56against you if you go back on your word to God.
- 7:00Then Joshua sent all the people away to their own homelands.
- 7:05After this, Joshua son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died at
- 7:11the age of 110. They buried him in the land he
- 7:15had been allocated at Timnath Serra, in the Hill Country of
- 7:19Ephraim, north of Mount Gash. The people of Israel served the
- 7:24Lord throughout the lifetime of Joshua and of the elders who
- 7:28outlived him, those who had personally experienced all that
- 7:32the Lord had done for Israel. The bones of Joseph, which the
- 7:36Israelites had brought along with them when they left Egypt,
- 7:39were buried at Shechem in the plot of land Jacob had bought
- 7:43from the sons of Hama for 100 pieces of silver.
- 7:46This land was located in the territory allotted to the
- 7:49descendants of Joseph. Eliezar, son of Aaron, also
- 7:54died. He was buried in the Hill
- 7:57Country of Ephraim in the town of Gibeah, which had been given
- 8:01to his son Phineas. My Lord, you are a gracious and
- 8:17dependable God. Thank you that you provide for
- 8:21us. You provided this land that you
- 8:24had promised your people so long ago, and you provide for us our
- 8:29daily needs. You provide us with families,
- 8:34with communities, with a Saviour who loves us and who has done
- 8:40everything that was needed to restore us back to you.
- 8:46You hold us in your hand and you care for us in big and small
- 8:51ways every hour of every day. Thank you that you are our
- 8:55loving Father, that we are your blessed children.
- 9:00We just stand before you in awe and wonder and love.
- 9:06And we pray all of these things in the saving name of Jesus.
- 9:10Amen.
