- 0:05Clock management issues and two minute troubles are giving Aaron Glenn and
- 0:09the Jets a tough time. Written by Dennis Wazak Jr. This article
- 0:15is being read by an automated voice generated by Everlet. The clock
- 0:20appears to be ticking for Aaron Glen, and that precisely one of
- 0:24the major reasons he and the New York Jets are in this
- 0:27mess. After a twenty eight twenty five loss to the previously winless
- 0:31Miami Dolphins, the Jets sit at 2 5 and at yet another
- 0:34low point. Early defensive struggles against an offense that was among the
- 0:38NFL's worst were an issue, as was poor play calling at the
- 0:42goal line with a chance to tie the game. But Glenn, mismanagement
- 0:46of the clock and his timeouts in two minute situations have been
- 0:49a recurring theme in his twenty four game tenure. The most damning
- 0:53statistic. Glenn's jets have been outscored one hundred and seven six in
- 0:57the final two minutes of the first half during the last two
- 1:01seasons. Well, the thing is we're trying, said Glenn, who explained that
- 1:05the Jets practice two minute drills throughout the week. So it's not
- 1:09like we're not trying to get that done. We've just got to
- 1:11improve in our execution. I have to improve on on both sides,
- 1:16how we manufacture these things. So I mean it's a process of
- 1:19getting these things done. I know it's frustrating for the fans, I
- 1:23know it's frustrating for the players, it's frustrating for us as coaches,
- 1:27but we've just got to continue to work at it. And as
- 1:30long as we continue to do that, I just know that we'll
- 1:33get better at it. That's a tough sell to anyone who watched
- 1:37the Dolphins, leading fourteen seven at the time, get the ball at
- 1:41their nine yard line with eight forty four left in the second
- 1:44quarter, and go on a clock chewing, ninety one yard drive that
- 1:47ended fifteen plays and eight thirty eight later with a two yard
- 1:51touchdown run by Malik Willis. And with all three timeouts still in
- 1:55Glenn's pocket. With only six seconds left before halftime, Geno Smith took
- 2:00a knee and Jets fans booed loudly as the team headed into
- 2:04the locker room. Glenn said after the game he didn't use his
- 2:08timeouts because he thought his defense would stop the Dolphins to give
- 2:11the Jets the ball back. He added that, in retrospect, he should
- 2:15have used them. Glenn reiterated Monday that the thinking was that the
- 2:19Dolphins could negate the Jets timeouts by getting first downs, and if
- 2:23they used all of them, Miami could run out the clock. The
- 2:26Dolphins did and got into the end zone. We've got to do
- 2:30a better job, and I have to do better job, and I
- 2:33said that yesterday, Glenn said. And to me I think that's the
- 2:36most important part of making sure we just try to improve in
- 2:39those areas. What's working? Getting the ball to rookie Omar Cooper Junior,
- 2:45the first round draft pick has thrived in his two games, since
- 2:49returning from injured reserve. He had five catches for one hundred and
- 2:53fifteen yards and a touchdown against Miami, making him the third player
- 2:57in NFL history with at least five receptions, one hundred yards receiving
- 3:01and a TD catch in two of His first three career games,
- 3:04joining Don Looney, 1940 Philadelphia and Bobby Johnson, 1984 Giants. It's
- 3:11a long year, so Tubo games. You can't just say you established
- 3:15yourself, Cooper said I will say, I'm grateful that I was able
- 3:18to play tuboo games, play healthy, and I feel like me and
- 3:21Gino are connecting really well. I feel like we can continue to
- 3:24grow on that. What needs help? Among the laundry list of items
- 3:30is finding ways to get number one wide receiver Garrett Wilson the
- 3:33football more consistently. His first official target came in the third quarter,
- 3:38and he finished with two catches
- 3:40for twenty six yards on three targets. Wilson was noticeably frustrated during
- 3:44a sideline outburst that Glenn said was overblown. There's also the curious
- 3:49calls by offensive coordinator Frank Reich on first and goal at the
- 3:53one in the fourth quarter and the Jets, down twenty-one fourteen. Fullback
- 3:57tight end Andrew Beck, who had no carries this season, lost a
- 4:01yard on first down. Braylon Allen lost another yard on the next
- 4:04play, and Smith was sacked for a twelve yard loss on third
- 4:07down, so New York had to settle for a field goal. Stock
- 4:12up. T. Mason Taylor, the second year tight end, had a season
- 4:16high five catches four sixty two yards and his first two touchdown
- 4:19game. Taylor, a second round pick East year, also made a toe
- 4:23tapping grab on a late two point conversion to make it a
- 4:26three point game. Stock down. CB Jarvis. Brownley Jr.
- 4:32He was a surprise healthy, inactive, and Glenn declined to go into
- 4:35details, saying he was going to keep that in house between me
- 4:38and Jarvis. Brownley acquired last year from Tennessee, didn't play at the
- 4:42end of New York's loss at New England last week, and was
- 4:45replaced as the nickel cornerback by rookie D'Angelo Pons. Injuries. D.
- 4:52T. Vondreswet left Sunday with a knee injury, R B. Brees Hall,
- 4:55Quadriceps, and L. G. Dillon Parham, Kinney have missed four straight games.
- 5:00Key number. Five nineteen, Glenn's record as Jets coach, including zero eight
- 5:05versus AFC East opponents. Next steps Glenn is on the hot seat,
- 5:11and things could get worse Sunday in front of the home crowd
- 5:14if the Jets can't find a way to debeat Las Vegas, which
- 5:17is on a four game skid. Glenn said he knows it's going
- 5:21to get noisy, but the jets are blocking out the outside noise.
- 5:25Just focus on who we have in this building, he said, and
- 5:28then just improving. See the AP's full NFL coverage here.
