- 0:06your impact in the world. I'm Steph Safra, your host.
- 0:09Let's explore the power of showing up with intention and
- 0:12energy each day. This is for those who seek to
- 0:15make life truly meaningful. Get ready for impact.
- 0:22Hi team, happy to have you here. I hope you're having an awesome
- 0:25day. I had this really great
- 0:27conversation earlier this week. I was hanging out with my wife
- 0:32and a friend of mine, Danny, and we were talking about putting
- 0:35yourself out there in the world and getting out online and
- 0:38getting in front of the camera. And he was saying he wanted to
- 0:41do more of this in his business. We were encouraging him.
- 0:45He was feeling a little hesitant, and it had me thinking
- 0:49about something that comes up so often with people and something
- 0:53that I wanted to address in this episode today.
- 0:55It's this question of what kills our momentum?
- 0:59What gets in the way of us finding that flow and creating
- 1:04things that we want to create and really like building the
- 1:07life that we want. And one of the biggest killers
- 1:10of momentum is procrastination and waiting.
- 1:13And it has me thinking about this idea of how can we shorten
- 1:16the time between the idea that we have and the action that we
- 1:21take. And I always talk to my coaching
- 1:24clients about this because so often people kind of get stuck
- 1:28in the idea phase. They have lots of insights,
- 1:32epiphanies, aha moments. They're really excited about all
- 1:34the things they're learning about themselves, especially in
- 1:37coaching, but that action piece is missing for them.
- 1:41And so as time goes on, they're wondering why am I not getting
- 1:45the transformation that I want to see in my life?
- 1:47And it's because they have the ideas and they're really nailing
- 1:51that idea phase, but they're not taking any action in their
- 1:55lives. And so if we can shorten the
- 1:58amount of time between idea and action, that's when we start to
- 2:02get some momentum. There's a coach out there named
- 2:05Craig Ballantine and he always says success loves speed.
- 2:09And I love that because what he's really implying is that if
- 2:14we can have an idea and immediately start to put it into
- 2:19action, or at least build the framework or the scaffolding
- 2:22around it so that we can then take action on it, that's when
- 2:25we're going to start to see the results.
- 2:27Success, love, speed. And often when I say this to
- 2:31clients, I'll get a little pushback.
- 2:33They're going to say things to me like, but Steph, what if I
- 2:36don't have all the information? And I'm like, great, you
- 2:39probably don't have all the information.
- 2:40That's a great question. So my question to you would be,
- 2:43how do you get the right information?
- 2:44Who do you need to talk to? What research do you need to do?
- 2:47Great, now go do it. And then people will say, but
- 2:50Steph, what if I'm just waiting for the right timing?
- 2:52It doesn't feel like the right timing.
- 2:54And I'm like another great question because I'm all for the
- 2:57right timing, but that doesn't mean that you have to be taking
- 3:00no action, that you sit in a place of inaction.
- 3:04Everything does have to happen at its right time.
- 3:07I can acknowledge that, fully believe that to be true, but you
- 3:11have to lay the foundation for that thing to be able to happen.
- 3:15You know, you can't sit there and say, God, I'd love to be in
- 3:18the NBA someday and never pick up a ball, never go out and
- 3:22practice your shooting and your dribbling and your passing,
- 3:25never be on a team, never play in a league.
- 3:27And you're wondering, God, it just, it's probably not the
- 3:29right timing for me to be in the NBA.
- 3:32And it's like, no, man, it's not that it's not the right timing,
- 3:35it's that you never took any action to allow yourself to get
- 3:39to that place. What's often happening is that
- 3:43people are letting their saboteurs run the show and
- 3:46listening to those little negative voices in their head,
- 3:49so they're not making any moves to do the things they want to
- 3:52do. And Lord, we've all experienced
- 3:54this. It's very easy to get worried
- 3:56about what people think of you, that you're going to be judged,
- 3:59that you're stepping out of your normal identity.
- 4:02And it feels vulnerable and embarrassing.
- 4:04I'm not somebody who posts content online.
- 4:08I'm not somebody who promotes my business.
- 4:10I'm not somebody who has these hard conversations.
- 4:14And so we worry that stepping out of identity is going to
- 4:18create cause for us to be blamed or shamed or judged or
- 4:21criticized. I get it.
- 4:23Trust me, I've been there. Like I said, I was talking with
- 4:28Danny earlier this week, and he was saying he wants to create
- 4:31more of an online presence for himself with his business and
- 4:34get on camera a little bit more and pump up his Instagram page.
- 4:38And we were encouraging him because he's got a great
- 4:40personality. He's out there in the world
- 4:42socially all the time. People love him.
- 4:44He said, yeah, But then when people see it, they can say, oh,
- 4:48he's trying to do a thing. And it's really, really common
- 4:54that we think that we're afraid of that response from people.
- 4:57And so many people never move on something because they're afraid
- 5:01to start small. I have been there so many times.
- 5:05I've been dragging my feet because I have been afraid to be
- 5:09seen as starting small in other people's eyes.
- 5:12But we've all seen someone break out and do something new and
- 5:15think to ourselves, ah, they're doing something new that's cute
- 5:19and small. And then we don't want to do the
- 5:22thing and we're afraid of being seen that way.
- 5:25Meanwhile, that person who has been consistently showing up and
- 5:28doing the small thing, all of a sudden they started to build
- 5:31something bigger. And that small thing becomes a
- 5:34medium thing. And then it becomes a larger
- 5:35thing. And their life is starting to
- 5:37change and they're creating some cool shit in their life.
- 5:40And we're like, damn, I wish I would have started when they
- 5:43started. But you are afraid of starting
- 5:46and being seen as starting small.
- 5:49It's a human condition. It's totally normal, it's
- 5:53totally natural. We're afraid to take the baby
- 5:56steps that lead to the big stuff, especially because we
- 6:00have so much access to seeing all of these people in the world
- 6:04that have seemingly made it in our eyes.
- 6:07No matter the industry or the area of life, we can see those
- 6:10people out in the world, on social media, in the news, with
- 6:13the Internet. We just have access to so much
- 6:15information that we look out there and we think, Oh my God,
- 6:19those people. There are 25 chapters further
- 6:23along into their life story than me.
- 6:26And then we get into comparison and we say, oh God, that
- 6:30person's so good at what they do.
- 6:31I could never do that, man. That person's such an incredible
- 6:34parent. They have it all together.
- 6:35I can never be that organized and put together and so on and
- 6:39so on. In every industry and every walk
- 6:41of life. We can look out in the world and
- 6:43see an example of somebody who's further along than us and think,
- 6:47but I couldn't do that. But you could team and you know
- 6:51it. You absolutely could.
- 6:53You just have to have the idea or the vision for what you want
- 6:57and then shorten the amount of time between the idea and the
- 7:00action that you take. The other thing that so often
- 7:03gets in our way is that we want things to be perfect before we
- 7:06begin. Trust me, I have struggled with
- 7:08this so many times. Or we get overwhelmed with the
- 7:12fact that it's actually going to take a lot of work to have the
- 7:16outcome that we want. There will be many baby steps to
- 7:19get to that outcome. This happens with my
- 7:22stepdaughters all the time. My oldest, Harper, she'll feel
- 7:26like she needs to have this hard conversation with someone who's
- 7:29hurting her feelings or or doing something lame, and she'll drag
- 7:32her feet and make all these excuses why it won't work to
- 7:35talk to them anyway. She says, oh, nothing will
- 7:38change even if I talk to them, and nothing's going to change
- 7:41because she's just going to keep doing it.
- 7:43She's afraid to take the baby steps.
- 7:46She's overwhelmed by the amount of work that it will take to
- 7:49have that conversation. And so she does nothing.
- 7:52And the behavior continues and she'll come home feeling the
- 7:55same way day after day. Classic teenager move.
- 7:59But then we talk about how it's just a start and that
- 8:03conversation is something to build on and that there will
- 8:06probably be a series of conversations that will happen,
- 8:10but it has to begin somewhere. And how it's building her skills
- 8:14and giving her more data about the friendship and on and on.
- 8:18I tell her if you want something to change, you have to take the
- 8:22action to create the change. Success loves speed.
- 8:27She'd have a hell of a lot less drama and a lot more
- 8:30satisfaction in her day-to-day if she would just move when she
- 8:34knew she needed to move. If she could have the
- 8:36conversation when she knew that she needed to have the
- 8:39conversation. If we as people could stop
- 8:44waiting so long to make a move on the things that we care
- 8:46about, if we could shorten the time between the idea that we
- 8:50have that we're so excited about, that's banging around in
- 8:53our head that we just can't stop thinking about, and the action
- 8:57that we could take to try to bring it to life, it would
- 9:00dramatically increase your chances of it happening.
- 9:03It creates speed where before there was just stagnation.
- 9:08And we know what stagnation feels like.
- 9:10It feels like frustration, it can feel hopeless.
- 9:13It can have us starting to feel like the victim in our own
- 9:16lives. It can feel like, oh, that idea
- 9:19wasn't that good in the 1st place.
- 9:21Stagnation is the killer of our dreams.
- 9:25So my challenge to you today and this week is to think about that
- 9:28idea that you've been bouncing around in your head, that thing
- 9:31that you've been wanting to do, that conversation you've been
- 9:34wanting to start, and take the first small step to doing that
- 9:40thing. I'm not asking you to go 100
- 9:43miles an hour or even 60 miles an hour.
- 9:46I'm just asking you to put your foot on the pedal and start to
- 9:49move the car forward. Success loves speed.
- 9:53Trust me on this. So I hope that this helps.
- 9:57I'm so glad that you're somebody who cares about the energy that
- 10:00you're putting out in the world and the influence that it has on
- 10:02other people and then your own life.
- 10:05I hope that you have a great rest of your week and that you
- 10:07can shorten that time between idea and action.
- 10:11Thanks for listening and as always, thank you for being
- 10:13ready to Impact. Thanks for listening to Impact
- 10:16Ready. I hope today's episode inspired
- 10:18you to own your impact and recognize that you are powerful.
- 10:22By elevating our energy and awareness, we can create
- 10:25exponential change in this life. If you enjoyed today's insights,
