- 0:00SPEAKER_00: The most dangerous competitor you will ever face isn't a human.
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: In sales,
- 0:07SPEAKER_00: leadership,
- 0:08SPEAKER_00: and the marketplace,
- 0:09we often think our largest competitor is the company two aisles
- 0:15over at the trade
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: show.
- 0:17But for many of us,
- 0:19the real enemy is the status quo,
- 0:21and its parent,
- 0:23the comfort zone monster.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: Today, our focus is Proverbs 26, because it's the 26th day of the month.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: Welcome to Marketplace Proverbs and Coffee with Ernie,
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: where a proverb a day keeps stinking thinking away.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: I'm Ernie Lansford,
- 0:45and my desire is to help you connect biblical wisdom to
- 0:49everyday marketplace
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: decisions,
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: allowing you to build relationships that far outlast any transactions.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: We work our best to bring timeless biblical truth into the marketplace.
- 1:05Where influence is real,
- 1:07choices are constant,
- 1:09and relationships matter more than results.
- 1:13So pour yourself a cup of coffee or tea or whatever it is that
- 1:17you like to enjoy
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: when you listen to this podcast.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: Today,
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: I am sharing from Chapter 26 of Marketplace Proverbs Volume 1,
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: A Sales Navigator's Compass to Customer Success Mastery,
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: written by yours truly and co-author John Kluter.
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: I'm going to read two versions of
- 1:39Proverbs 26,
- 1:41verses 25 through 26,
- 1:43from the Message,
- 1:45MSG translation,
- 1:47as well as the NIV.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: From the MSG,
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: quote,
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: "...your enemy shakes hands and greets you like an old friend,
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: all the while conniving against you.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: And when they speak warmly to you, don't believe them for a minute.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: They're just waiting for a chance to rip you off."
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: That's Proverbs 26, 24 through 26 from the message.
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: And the NIV puts it this way.
- 2:14Though their speech is charming,
- 2:17do not believe them,
- 2:18for seven abominations fill their heart.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: Abominations fill their heart.
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: As Zig Ziglar once said, I paid $1,000 to get my eyes fixed.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: Now my mouth won't work.
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: Anyway, as we continue...
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: I recently read from Matthew Henry's commentary.
- 2:37He warns us,
- 2:37quote,
- 2:38a wise man will fear the flatterer more than the slanderer.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: Now, in the marketplace, that flatterer doesn't have to be a person.
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: It can be our mindset.
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: I found one of the greatest flatterers in business is the status quo.
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: It whispers, hey, you're doing fine.
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: Why change?
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: Why fix what isn't broken?
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: And if you listen long enough,
- 3:09SPEAKER_00: it will keep us in the same place,
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: allowing opportunities to pass us by.
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: Well, just who is this comfort zone monster?
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: I believe the status quo is the child of the comfort zone.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: Now,
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: Cambridge Dictionary defines a comfort zone as,
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: quote,
- 3:28a situation in which you feel comfortable in which your ability
- 3:32and determination
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: are not being tested,
- 3:35SPEAKER_00: end quote.
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: I've seen this.
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: I've experienced this firsthand.
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: In my early corporate sales leadership years,
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: I traveled with territory managers to visit customers,
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: and we focused almost exclusively on
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: on existing accounts.
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: Why?
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: Well, because it was easy.
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: It was familiar.
- 3:59SPEAKER_00: It was comfortable.
- 4:00SPEAKER_00: And frankly,
- 4:01I had been taught that from all of the sales managers that
- 4:05traveled with me when I
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: was in a territory as a personal production person,
- 4:12SPEAKER_00: or I affectionately call a payment pounder.
- 4:16The mantra among all of them was,
- 4:20quote,
- 4:20always visit your existing customers,
- 4:23end quote.
- 4:25SPEAKER_00: But, you know, that comfort came with a cost.
- 4:30The more we visited the same customers,
- 4:34the more we risk taking them for granted.
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: And slowly,
- 4:39we became professional visitors instead of business development
- 4:44market expansion
- 4:45SPEAKER_00: specialists.
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: I believe comfort breeds contempt,
- 4:49SPEAKER_00: not necessarily outright dislike,
- 4:53SPEAKER_00: but a dangerous level of assumption.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: We start thinking, oh, they'll always buy from us.
- 4:59SPEAKER_00: And before long, we stop adding new value.
- 5:03SPEAKER_00: We stop adding deeper significance.
- 5:07Which brings me to the point of talking about transactions
- 5:11versus relationships.
- 5:13SPEAKER_00: You've heard me say many times, relationships always trump transactions.
- 5:20SPEAKER_00: That's true.
- 5:20SPEAKER_00: However, do not misunderstand.
- 5:23SPEAKER_00: It's the transactions that pay the bills.
- 5:27SPEAKER_00: But we cannot deposit a relationship in the bank.
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: Yet, without relationships, we won't have transactions to deposit.
- 5:38SPEAKER_00: Rabbi Daniel Lapin calls transactions certificates of appreciation.
- 5:44SPEAKER_00: I call them celebrations of a mutual commitment.
- 5:48Yep,
- 5:48the comfort zone monster feeds on transaction chasing and not
- 5:53relationship building.
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: It tells us that one more quick deal is all that matters.
- 5:59SPEAKER_00: But in reality,
- 6:01SPEAKER_00: the deeper the relationship,
- 6:03SPEAKER_00: the more consistent and meaningful the transactions become
- 6:09SPEAKER_00: Think on that.
- 6:10Today's customer success code,
- 6:12the status quo is the comfort zone in disguise.
- 6:17SPEAKER_00: Break it before it breaks growth.
- 6:21SPEAKER_00: Let's pray for discernment.
- 6:22SPEAKER_00: Lord Jesus, please.
- 6:24SPEAKER_00: Through your Holy Spirit dwelling in us,
- 6:26give us wisdom and discernment to know when we're feeding the
- 6:30comfort zone monster.
- 6:32Show us the difference between staying in the status quo and
- 6:36stepping into growth
- 6:37SPEAKER_00: opportunities directed by you.
- 6:39SPEAKER_00: Amen.
- 6:42SPEAKER_00: Well, I've got some expanded action points for you today.
- 6:47SPEAKER_00: The theme is escaping the comfort zone.
- 6:51SPEAKER_00: Action point number one, identify the status quo.
- 6:55SPEAKER_00: Pick one existing customer and ask yourself,
- 6:58SPEAKER_00: what stayed the same for too long in this relationship?
- 7:04SPEAKER_00: Action point number two, spot the comfort zone.
- 7:08SPEAKER_00: Name one reason you've stayed in that same pattern.
- 7:11SPEAKER_00: Is it convenience?
- 7:13SPEAKER_00: Is it fear of change?
- 7:14SPEAKER_00: Is it overconfidence?
- 7:16SPEAKER_00: Just what is it?
- 7:19SPEAKER_00: Action point number three, value them anew.
- 7:24Write down three ways that this customer brings value to your
- 7:30business beyond transactions.
- 7:34SPEAKER_00: Action point number four is add fresh value.
- 7:38SPEAKER_00: Plan one tangible way to serve them differently this week,
- 7:43SPEAKER_00: a way that you have never done before.
- 7:46SPEAKER_00: Introduce a new idea.
- 7:49SPEAKER_00: Connect them to a new resource or solve an unspoken problem.
- 7:55SPEAKER_00: And action point number five, measure their gain.
- 7:59After adding value,
- 8:01after adding significance,
- 8:04note how it impacts their success.
- 8:08SPEAKER_00: This helps us to see and show the profit of significance-driven service.
