- 0:01Coming up on this week's episode of hip Hop Now podcast, the Game releases
- 0:06a dis record going at Rick Ross and the Internet wants to know who asks
- 0:12for this? My thoughts on new projects from Conway the Machine and ghost Face
- 0:19Killer and l L COOJ wants an outcast album and not a flute album.
- 0:30That is true, but we also want your album, Uncle el, Let's
- 0:37do it. Welcome to Jippop Now Podcast. If you're from the future,
- 0:47you know what to do. Get your ass out about so disrespect the leg
- 0:55hip hop is say this today, escat right into the business. Whatever,
- 1:00y'all. I am your host Vegas and this It's hip Hop Now Podcasts,
- 1:04a podcast specifically designed to keep you caught up on all things hip hop music
- 1:10and culture that happened throughout the week. Big shout out to the supporters over
- 1:14at patreon dot com slash hip Hop Now past and present, and if you're
- 1:19watching the video version of this podcast, you see those people's names scrolling at
- 1:26the bottom. Appreciate you. A lot of what I've done in recent years
- 1:32as far as equipment is due in part to them, and I have a
- 1:36couple of ideas to further increase the production of this podcast, not even just
- 1:42the output, but also the set, because you know, I do it
- 1:47from the garage, which is cool. You know, it's it's whatever,
- 1:49whatever, you know, it's just regular hip hop. But I have speak
- 1:53in my home that would step up the set. You know. We just
- 1:59got established few things, you know, and then we go from there.
- 2:01So first and foremost, I mean, we done had what probably will go
- 2:09down as one of the most epic hip hop battles of all time. I'm
- 2:15not saying it's the best, but considering not just the output of the songs,
- 2:21but the rollout the social media, the back and forth, like hip
- 2:27hop was alive and breathing. Do not believe what quest Love says. He
- 2:30just scared but me and the Homy tone from into the doome dot Com did
- 2:38a brand new episode of my side podcast from this one my companion podcast called
- 2:46That Time in hip Hop, which is about history and nostalgia and preservation of
- 2:52hip hop moments. We felt the need to make a new episode because Kendrick
- 2:58Lamar versus Dre where's the moment in hip hop? Whether you like them or
- 3:04not, whether you feel there were better battles or you know they're better rappers.
- 3:09Now whatever the case may be, you couldn't escape the conversation around it,
- 3:14which means it had impact and not just on hip hop heads. So
- 3:21check that out if you're listening to audio form. It's available on audio form,
- 3:24and also the video is available here as well. I'll make sure I
- 3:30have a card pop up that you can click if you just want to head
- 3:32right over there to see what that's about, or when you finish this video,
- 3:36it'll be at the end of the video, so definitely check that out.
- 3:39Big shout out to hip HOPDX dot com. And that's it this week
- 3:44because that's where I'm getting most of my news from. Shout out to them,
- 3:47Shout out to all the online publications that I use to source the news
- 3:53for hip hop and you know, and to basically narrow it down to me,
- 3:59what are the more important stories beyond not beyond, but that focused specifically
- 4:05on the music and not anticks outside of the music, because honestly, you
- 4:12can go anywhere else the tabloid. But if you know an album drop which
- 4:16we got too, we gotta talk about that you may be interested in and
- 4:19you kind of want to get a you just want to hear somebody's opinion on
- 4:24it before you press play or before you buy it. I got you a
- 4:28little bit later. So with that being said, let's skip right into the
- 4:31business. So, you know, Kendrick dropped not Like Us, and then
- 4:43Drake dropped the Heart part six, and those were like literally the last two
- 4:48disc records. Most sensible hip hop heads who are just judging bars and not
- 4:55accusations knew when they heard not Like Us, this battle is over. Now
- 5:01we all listen to Drake's response, because you know, it came in a
- 5:08timely fashion where you had to like, yo, well let's see, maybe
- 5:12it's not over. But then in that, you know, came a lot
- 5:15of contradictions, and the overall consensus online was that this battle was over and
- 5:23Kendrick won and it was a great fight and all of that. But the
- 5:28whole time that this stuff has been happening, there's there have been a couple
- 5:32of people who have nothing to do with this back and forth trying to find
- 5:39their way into the conversation. Now, I don't take anything away from Rick
- 5:44Ross because he was a target of Drake so rightfully so he responded within two
- 5:50hours, by the way, after pushups came out and he's been he's he's
- 5:56the one who led the charge on hashtag BBL drizzy, which is so which
- 6:02is funny. Rick ross videos on social media and him talking at the end
- 6:12of the dis record are all better than the actual dis record and that's what
- 6:17makes it funny. So it was cool, right, he was a part
- 6:21of it because he was targeted, just like a couple of other people,
- 6:25like a SAP and all of that. One person who no one was thinking
- 6:29about. I mean, maybe i am, because you know, sometimes he
- 6:32put out some really dope albums that get slept on, but was the one
- 6:36person who constantly tries to insert themselves into things they shouldn't insert themselves into.
- 6:46And I know maybe that's pause, But what I'm saying is the game decided
- 6:50to have some disparaging words towards Rick Ross. I guess that's because he may
- 7:00feel some kind of way about what Kendrick is doing now how he got the
- 7:03West Coast, but it would be foul to go at Kendrick in defense of
- 7:09drink. So maybe he feels like, well, I'm gonna support Drake by
- 7:15going at Rick Ross. We don't we don't want to hear that, and
- 7:23you know why for those who don't know, like yo, why would you
- 7:25Why wouldn't you want to hear him game? He's a good rapper, right,
- 7:29Yeah, he's way better now to me than he was in his debut.
- 7:31I didn't like him on his debut. He was literally a name dropper,
- 7:35that's all he did. Like everything he said over over the course of
- 7:41time. He has some really dope albums where you have to give him credit,
- 7:45like the Red album, the nineteen eighty two Drink, the nineteen ninety
- 7:48two albums criminally slept on Doctor's Advocate, right, the double album he had
- 7:58like He's just he says, some really dope albums. He has a nice
- 8:01catalog, honestly, when it when you when it's all set and done.
- 8:05Now, he got some duds, but when it's all set and done,
- 8:09he has more positive on the hip hop side than anything. But the reason
- 8:13why his last album, I can't even remember what I liked about it because
- 8:18I was so so annoyed by the fact that he was gunning for this eminem
- 8:26battle that just seemed like it was coming out of fit are And then is
- 8:31that post too? Come on, man, y'all got chilled? And then
- 8:37The song was ten minutes, and only people who really hate Eminem or really
- 8:43hate the conversation around Eminem was feeling it. But most people felt like,
- 8:50even if I don't like Eminem, what is Game doing? I don't even
- 8:54want to hear that. I don't even like him now I like Game as
- 8:56a rapper. And this new song, which is entitled I think it's called
- 9:03Freeway's Revenge, meaning Rick Ross got his name because Rick Ross named something like
- 9:09Hubert. I don't know. His real name is something else, like Anthony
- 9:13was something regular, right, But he took the Rick Ross name from a
- 9:20famous drug dealer from back in the eighties who the show's FX show Snowfall was
- 9:30based upon, right, kind of based off upon his life, and he
- 9:33would be the Franklin character. But Rick Ross, the real Ricky Ross,
- 9:39Ricky Ross, Freeway Ricky Ross, right, because there's also a Freewing right,
- 9:43but Freeway Ricky Ross. He kind of was known for having like a
- 9:48ball head and a beard, like a big beard. So Rick Ross kind
- 9:52of, you know, co opted everything from the name to the beard,
- 9:56the ball head, all of that, and you know, oh, what
- 10:01Game is doing on this song, Well, let me just say this,
- 10:05well, let's let's just get to some bars. Well, okay, I'm
- 10:09losing myself. I think it's a dope record because again, I like being
- 10:16I mean, I like game, I like the track, I like the
- 10:22way he ramen, I like the wittiness of it. It's just that we
- 10:28didn't ask you to come out of the woodworks and start dissing people. It's
- 10:33a clear cry for attention, given the fact the entire West Coast is jumping
- 10:39based off of the not Like Us song that Kendrick heads out. It's just
- 10:45really showing these emotional cats can't keep still. They can't and may be the
- 10:50first one to say they have haters. But but that being said, I
- 10:56kind of wish this song wasn't a disc record it was about anything else with
- 11:01the same performance, with the same wittiness, because I think it's really dope.
- 11:07But I hate the fact that it's a disrecord, so I didn't really
- 11:09want to hear much of it after I listened the first time. But here's
- 11:13a couple of bars for y'all, and I quote you twelve lemon pepper wings
- 11:20from a heart attack. Academics give this n word an ozempic starter pack.
- 11:26See I like stuff like that. It's dope. This ain't the Kendrick beef.
- 11:31My Drake sings songs, shots ring out the neighbor. Better have his
- 11:37ring on. Let me see there some other ones over here. And this
- 11:43was aimed at this aimed at gunplay. Yeah, your baby mama told me
- 11:48you like to get peede on. You are a CEO. That's the last
- 11:54time you had keys on. I like that one. And we know you
- 12:00treat gunplay like he a peon and he knows some ish that ain't cool for
- 12:05him to speak on now Again, if he wasn't so annoying throughout his career
- 12:16when it came to attention seeking, and this was an actual beef, and
- 12:20it was a clear line to us, like knowing what's the static, what's
- 12:28the situation between him and Rick Ross, then it would be par for the
- 12:33costs. Yeah, you're gonna miss each other. But it clearly just looked
- 12:37to me like he didn't like all the Rick Ross jokes about Drake and his
- 12:43money. And he tweeted he said it's always the fat and word with skinny
- 12:48legs talking ish and thats just tell me he's just he's just scrolling through he's
- 12:54just watching this whole situation and he's thinking, how can I get involved?
- 13:00Oft BBL Drizzy, I got you. I'm gonna I'm gonna get at this
- 13:05wing Stop cat right, which is so stupid because when you say that,
- 13:09like you, Rick Ross has a lot of money, probably because of his
- 13:13investments, which includes Wingstop. Like Wingstop, I don't care where you're from.
- 13:16Maybe you're from Montana or something like that. No respect to Montana,
- 13:20but I'm just saying, uh, and Wingstop was it. But most people
- 13:26didn't really know about wing Stop until they started to pop up. And Rick
- 13:31Ross right, Lemon Pepper and when when And I'm gonna just speak for us
- 13:37black folk. When we tasted the Lemon Pepper wings, we was like,
- 13:41yeah, this is the new this is the new spot to go to.
- 13:46And like I'll say, because I live in the suburbs, now, y'all,
- 13:52that's that's what education and success looked like. You know, I'm sorry.
- 13:56I love where I come from, but we were poor and I ain't
- 14:00rich. But what I will tell you is what I don't expect. I
- 14:05expect this in the hood, right, go to the wingstop. It's crazy.
- 14:07I expect that. But here in the suburbs, especially on the weekend.
- 14:13That parking lot is crazy in front of the wingstop. So it's like
- 14:18slander. I get it the wingstop, Rick Ross. But sometimes it's difficult
- 14:24when you already be in desperate with entering yourself into a battle that had nothing
- 14:31to do with you or a beef. Like some people like say they had
- 14:35nothing to do with you, and we know Rick Ross definitely got more money
- 14:41than you. You can you're gonna try to slander the investments and say heart
- 14:46attack when Rick Ross lost all this weight, and like, yeah, it's
- 14:50still a big dude, but he ain't the dude he used to be.
- 14:52I think people forget how big he actually used to be. So at the
- 14:58end of the day, again you pressed play on the song. It ain't
- 15:01bad at all. It's just really what game does, right. He's he's
- 15:07always looking for a way to create hype around whatever. You know, maybe
- 15:13he got an album coming or whatever, but all just around himself to get
- 15:20a bag or whatever it is. And it just comes off really corny,
- 15:24and sometimes I think it does more harm to his career because again when I
- 15:30go and tell people the albums, he has that afire They just think about
- 15:35him and the name dropping and just the thirstiness, and you know they don't
- 15:39even want to listen. And I'm telling them, like, Yo, nineteen
- 15:43ninety two is an incredible album from this dude. It's it's damn there perfect.
- 15:48It's like a classic. Damn They're perfect. But some people don't want
- 15:54to press play because of who it is and his pedigree and what people know
- 15:58of him. And here he is again, right, Nobody remembers that eminem
- 16:03disc. Nobody said, Yo, this rinks like top ten. Nobody cares
- 16:07only people. We only cared when he had to break up with g Unit.
- 16:11That was probably the only time we cared about the back and forth in
- 16:15a distan And even when him and Joe Budden was going back and forth like
- 16:21that was the ever that we really cared. Now it just feels like he
- 16:23does it for attention, and it's pretty clear. So L cool J recently
- 16:33did an interview and he talked about Andre three thousand, specifically saying, how
- 16:44put the fluke down. Now I'm not quoting hum, but put the fluke
- 16:47down, get with Big Boy and make another outcast album. That's what we
- 16:51want, And to that, I say yes. That's what we want,
- 16:59and the other people who were there in this interview, and actually I think
- 17:04it was the joint the shop where I think that's Lebron James's show, like
- 17:11roundtable situation and a barbershop kind of sort of setting, or at least the
- 17:17chairs are something like that. I don't know, but at the end of
- 17:21the day, you know, there were people who were kind of defending the
- 17:25flute album. No, I like it. I meditate to that, here's
- 17:30what happens, and this is to me, this is what the problem is
- 17:33when I see people arguing about that because of who it is. And ThReD
- 17:38three thousand can make a flute album if he wants, he can make ten
- 17:41of them if he wants. That's a totally different genre of music. If
- 17:45you can't remove yourself from thinking that's a rapper and trying to listen to him
- 17:52play a flute as if it's him reciting versus, you're just never going to
- 17:59be happy because that's just nonsense. It's madness. Why would you even think
- 18:03that, like this man, I made a flute album. If you don't
- 18:06want to hear Anddred three thousand playing the flute, not press play. If
- 18:11you want to hear him rapping, go back and listen to our cares.
- 18:15And that's the problem. A lot of times, people like, why would
- 18:18you press play on something you know you're not gonna like, because that's not
- 18:21what you want. And I remember, right before the Flute album dropped,
- 18:30I listened to an interview with Andred three thousand and he talked a lot about
- 18:37anxieties and a lot of those being tied to meeting expectations musically as hip hop
- 18:48and having something to say, and he just didn't feel like he had inspiration
- 18:53in regards to hip hop. Now, yeah, you may get inspired to
- 18:57write a verse here, a verse DA and stuff like that. I can
- 19:02relate to that, you know, as a as a person who used to
- 19:04rap heavy and right rhyms back in the days all the times and make songs
- 19:10and all that. And I wasn't even trying to get a deal, but
- 19:12I was just into it that much. For me. Now it's it's better
- 19:18to like every now and again write a verse or song, and you know,
- 19:25you get I can have a year that passed before I do that again,
- 19:27but it's really when the moment strikes you. So I get what he's
- 19:32saying like, yo, you know, I don't just want to do it
- 19:34to do it because people feel like I need to do this album. But
- 19:41then once the flute stuff died down a little bit, he did another interview
- 19:48one hundred and three thousand where he said that he would love to do another
- 19:53Outcast album. You know, if you know that inspiration is there in a
- 20:02lot of ways. I think it is. I think him coming out with
- 20:07this album and hearing how so many people want him to come back to rap,
- 20:14and whether it's a solo album or an Outcans album, that once you
- 20:19see the admiration for what you've done, that may inspire you to do more.
- 20:26Right, you're not going to convert the hip hop faithful to now listen
- 20:32to you know, atmospheric music and what is it? Forget the term that
- 20:41was explained to me of what it was. It's almost like soundscaping. And
- 20:45you know, like if you're playing Zelda and you're on a quest, quest
- 20:51to get the Blue Flower and you hear the flutes playing and all of that,
- 20:55right, and I think it's cool as the instrumental And again, he
- 21:00can make as many as he wants, but at the end of the day,
- 21:06if and then we know it's there because we've heard some of your more
- 21:10recent verses in years, so you don't you never when you put pen to
- 21:14paper, you never sound whack. So I would think, what's what's wrong?
- 21:21Would would one last? One? Last Outcast album? And I think
- 21:25also the recent passion of Rico Wade may also push that into a reality because
- 21:34I don't really believe in it, like it, don't black your blessing and
- 21:38you know, don't black your gift because you may feel like, man,
- 21:41I love playing the flute. It's a spiritual situation for me. This is
- 21:47my calling, this is my blessing. But sometimes there's just things in life
- 21:52that hint towards you should do that, even if it's once you should you
- 21:59should do that. I think. I think if you did it, and
- 22:03if you you and Big Boy got together, you made some new music,
- 22:07the chemistry is there again, and you know, the ideas start flowing.
- 22:11Then you do a tour where you get to perform not only music from this
- 22:15new album but also your hits and all the love because I get him dealing
- 22:22with some anxiety with all of that that I just mentioned. But I think,
- 22:26like when you think about you know, Andre, when's the last time
- 22:32you did a tour. I think it's a totally different audience now, bro,
- 22:37Like, I think the audience now they want to give you flowers so
- 22:44much that it may feel comfortable for you now you know, that's why it
- 22:51might be the right time. But again, you know Outcast, that is
- 22:55big expectations. Their their album run is I like to say flawless, and
- 23:02I'm including Idlewild. I liked it. I think they just make great music.
- 23:07And considering idle Wild was the last thing that he did that wasn't as
- 23:12well received, I don't think that should have took you out of what you
- 23:18loved doing for so long. So there are plenty of things you could talk
- 23:22about. Naj just did six albums. How if you ain't inspired by that,
- 23:29I don't know what. Well, so we'll see. And lastly,
- 23:37so this Friday, May tenth, I believe if you're from the future,
- 23:42you know what, the dude, get yours out of here. Man,
- 23:45you already heard these albums. Stop Playing is a notable release date coming off
- 23:52of a battle with you know, for a newer generation. But there's two
- 23:59albums really today that kind of play really big into the nostalgia of an older
- 24:06generation, one with the newer artist who kind of keeps that boom back feel
- 24:11alive, and another one of legendary artists from the legendary group the Wu Tang
- 24:17Klan. The new artists being Conway the Machine with an album called Slant Face
- 24:23Killer you get It and ghost Face with his new record deal with Mass Appeal
- 24:32and the lead single with Non Scar tissue. The name of his new album
- 24:37is called set the Tone you know, like it Like It. Tony starts
- 24:42two face killer albums today and we're gonna start with Conway. It was the
- 24:52album I listen to first and again I do three yes, I'd listen to
- 24:56both of these albums three times and record time, Like I just really just
- 25:00played them like back to back to back to back, back, from last
- 25:04night to the gym, everything until the point I recorded this. So,
- 25:08uh, three listens. First listen impressions. Second listen, let me listen
- 25:15a little bit more deeply to this record, you know, lyrics and things
- 25:18like that concepts. Third listen is just to confirm my thoughts. So the
- 25:26first one up, slam Face Killer by Conway the Machine features uh include method
- 25:30Man, Stove, God, cooks his on, Heir Keith Glock, Swiss
- 25:34Beats, don't get mad, It's not that bad bars tech Don ray Kwon,
- 25:41which Raykwon I don't believe. Even rhyms is more of like a speech.
- 25:47It's a dope speech. It's a it's a ray Kon speech. What
- 25:49do he say? What he said? We we the Golden Globes like what?
- 25:56But that's why we love the wove Man. The album is clocks in
- 26:00around an hour and six minutes, and I'm not gonna hold you my overall
- 26:07opinion of it. I think it's good. I think it's I think it's
- 26:11good. I think oftentimes when it comes to Conway to the Machine you you
- 26:17maybe like last year, won't he what he won't do? Won't he do?
- 26:22Or whatever? At first, my expectations were so high that I kind
- 26:26of didn't like it. I thought it was like guys, just a collection
- 26:30of songs, and then over time I wounded up like loving it, and
- 26:33I think it was in my top five last year. This album starts off
- 26:38very strong, like very strong, and we heard some of these songs right
- 26:44like with Cool and Dre and the other joint with Joey Badass the record Muddy
- 26:52with Stove God Cooks is just mad. It was mad though when I heard
- 26:56Dad, what I was like, Oh, okay, that's what we're doing,
- 27:00right, Give Give is the joint with Cool and Dre, which was
- 27:04crazy like bars. The one with method Man is crazy, uh flee lords
- 27:11on it like that one's called meth Back. And I think at some point
- 27:18this album takes a turn, and I think that turn will be the decided
- 27:23factor for fans on whether on how much they liked this project, because right
- 27:30before that interlude, Yo, it's like, Yo, this might be this
- 27:34might be top five of the year already when that interlude hits, which is
- 27:41like an interlude in a song featuring key Block, and key Block is more
- 27:45like the Kids today right with the sort of like the trap beats and stuff
- 27:49like that. So the beat is like that, and I was cool with
- 27:52it because Conway kind of in the last couple of projects he sort of always
- 27:57had one of those. So that's fine with it, like, Okay,
- 28:00here we go, hear this one. But then after that, the music,
- 28:08like the energy, the momentum changes with this album. Whereas the boomback
- 28:14beats and features were crazy and all of that all up into the interlude,
- 28:18and it just felt like they used that interlude song as a way to separate
- 28:22one sound from the other, and not all the songs on the ladder half
- 28:27sound like that. But it's just not as strong as how the album started.
- 28:33Like I liked the song with Jade Worthy, but by the end,
- 28:38I was like, man, this is just not as good as how it
- 28:42started. Like I was really hyped in the beginning. Now again, there's
- 28:47fourteen tracks on here. That interlude doesn't really arrive until track nine, So
- 28:52the majority of the album I do like, and I like a couple of
- 28:55songs again on that back half, But even like the song raw with Tech
- 29:00nine, I didn't like the beat and a lot of it had to do
- 29:07and I started to think, like, why you pick his beat? And
- 29:10I looked down on my phone and I was like, Oh, because it's
- 29:12a Tech nine kind of beat. I don't like stuff like that. Why
- 29:18get a beat like, Oh, I'm gonna have Tech nine on him,
- 29:22So let me get a Tech nine style beat. Nah, man, just
- 29:25get a beat that's dope and let let Tech nine cook. You don't know
- 29:29what he gonna do with it. Don't give him like a he's a Tech
- 29:33nine style beat and then now you have to adapt to it. I just
- 29:37it just fell off. And I don't know if that was the case or
- 29:41whatever Tech nine might have been, like yo send whatever. I just know
- 29:45it was. I was looking at that skip button, y'all, like how
- 29:52much long left phone? Oh it's almostself Okay, I'll let you live.
- 29:56So again, I think it's a good album. I don't I think it's
- 30:00a great album or anything like that, but I think it's a good album.
- 30:03I think time will tell how much I like it. But depending on
- 30:07what we get throughout the year, I could definitely see it being a part
- 30:11of the best albums, not in my top five, because the albums I
- 30:18currently had that would make my top five I think are better than this.
- 30:23And it's questionable if that's Benny Awesome because I started out with the Benny album
- 30:32kind of like but now every time I go back to it, something feels
- 30:36right. So we'll see. Now, before we finish, let's get into
- 30:41the ghost Face album. Set the Tone, Guns N' Roses. That's what
- 30:44it's called, Set the Tone, Guns and Roses. It's about nineteen tracks
- 30:49but also include skits it's about fifty three minutes in length. Features include like
- 30:56Jim Jones, Sheikh Lutes, Ramen, method Man, this new dude called
- 31:03Iceman. There's a couple of features mostly singers on here, John Rules on
- 31:08hair Fat Joe, Kanye West, Busta ROMs Is on here, Remy mis
- 31:14on here. A lot of features for a ghost Face album, and I
- 31:19know that scared some folks when they saw the track list, and they scared
- 31:25me because I was like, who is Trevor Jackson? Like, Yo,
- 31:27you just got anybody on here, right? And I figured, like,
- 31:32Yo, this must be just a bunch of massive pill people. They trying
- 31:34to like shoehorn in so that us ghost Face fans will discover these other cats.
- 31:41But really it's a lot of singers and for reasons, I'll say now
- 31:45right off the bat, what's my rating for this album. I really like
- 31:51it. I really like it, but I think it also suffers from the
- 31:56same exact thing I just said about Conway of the Machine, because it starts
- 32:02off really strong even with the features, and ironically, scar tissue feature in
- 32:09NAS is definitely my least favorite because all the other features feel like they fit,
- 32:17and I think with ghost Face and nas. I think they need a
- 32:21different beat with a different feel, maybe even something slower where you know,
- 32:25they could really get into the bar. So I didn't really care for Scar
- 32:30tissue that much, but it's not offensive. And again, when you going
- 32:35through this album, and in this case, instead of it being an interlude
- 32:40that separates the music, it's like after Skip two, which is track ten
- 32:46on the album, it turns into the club and I don't even know if
- 32:52it's a club in twenty twenty four, it might be a club in like
- 32:55nineteen ninety eight, to be honest. And what I mean by that is,
- 33:04well, before we get to that, let me just give you a
- 33:07couple of highlights, right. I think the first track is cool with Jim
- 33:12Jones and she gluches, but honestly, it kind of felt like a throwaway.
- 33:15And I think a solo ghost Face song should have been the first song
- 33:21you heard, because the first verse you hear, I mean, the first
- 33:23voice you hear on a ghost Face album is Jim Jones talking, even though
- 33:30ghost Face has the first verse. So that kind of had me kind of
- 33:32like, maybe this should have been a little bit lower in the track listing.
- 33:38It just doesn't feel like the first song Pair of Hammers with methad Man
- 33:44Crazy is everything you expected. Skate Out to Sea with Ray Kwon it is.
- 33:50It's what they do. The singing on there is what. It's the
- 33:54type of singing that would have been sampled on a Ray and Ghost song,
- 33:59right, So I think it fit the beat those two raman. I told
- 34:05you my thoughts on a Scar tissue Kilo in the Safe with Iceman, I
- 34:09didn't mind it. I think that Iceman dude. I like him. He
- 34:14was dope and he kind of fit with ghost Face, so I liked it
- 34:17a lot. No Face with ghost Face and Kanye was dope. My favorite,
- 34:24probably right now, is a song called Champion Sound, which has some
- 34:30dance hall, like a dance hall kind of hook, and the beat and
- 34:37the samples familiar, but it's all ghost Face and it's dope. It's dope.
- 34:42It's definitely going in my Hip Hop Now podcast playlist for twenty twenty four,
- 34:49which I'll share as we get closer to June when we start to talk
- 34:53about what are the best albums of the year so far? Right, So
- 35:00again, like I said with that second skit, the first skit is gold,
- 35:07right, you know, ghost Face starts out top Dead of live serials
- 35:13and then he goes on to name a couple of serials. But after that
- 35:17second skit we start to get Wizard of Poetry ghost Face. Now, if
- 35:28you don't know ghost Faces catalog like that, he put an album out called
- 35:31a Wizard of Poetry something like that, which was geared towards the ladies.
- 35:37So you know, I had a lot of R and B singers on that,
- 35:38and even though all of the beats weren't necessarily like club songs or R
- 35:45and B sounding songs, because they really weren't, now all of them,
- 35:49that album, to me is really good, like you know, from songs
- 35:52like Stay and the other record he got with Fabulous, where Fabulous plays like
- 35:58this, dude, I guess that's sleeping with this woman and they doing a
- 36:00little acting. So it's dope. And ghost Face is always done well over
- 36:08R and B sounding things. He's never sound out of pocket. But this
- 36:15is the most I've ever heard on a ghost Face album that included so much
- 36:20boombap. It is probably a deal break it for a lot of people.
- 36:24For me, it's fine, but it kind of got worse as it went
- 36:30on, right like plan B, which is the eleventh track on Here,
- 36:35I was like, okay, was talking to the ladies. I get it.
- 36:38Then track twelve, which featured jah Ru, I was like, okay,
- 36:43we're going back to the well again. I don't know if I like
- 36:45this one, but cool. This is probably the first song I really don't
- 36:49like. Locked in with a Z. I was like, okay, Ghost
- 36:53and a Z over this style. Be I hear it, but it sounds
- 36:58but it's it's tough to say right because Asy and Ghosts were out back then,
- 37:05and I can't say, well, this sounds like something that should have
- 37:07came out back then. But if they record together now, well what should
- 37:13it sound like today? But this so I think me liking it was more
- 37:17so like nostalgia, like yeah, this is how I like to hit a
- 37:22Z over these tracks, which is true and Ghosts, so I kind of
- 37:25like that record. Then another skid hit. Then things kind of go off
- 37:30the rails because ghost has a song called touch You, and I'm like,
- 37:36oh, we're still on, and we're still on, we still want it
- 37:38and all right. Then the next song with buster rhyms and I'm a Blame
- 37:45and SURRANI I'm a blame Buster rhyms. Buster RUMs put out that whack album
- 37:52block Okay, it wasn't that whack, but whack for buster album Blockbuster,
- 37:59where you know he did all these different sounds, and you know he loved
- 38:01to do the dance hall sound and all of that, and that's fine.
- 38:07I just when I listen to Blockbuster by Bust Rhymes, I was like,
- 38:09this just isn't for me. I wait for the Buster that I know to
- 38:15return, but you just don't expect to hear this on a ghost Face album.
- 38:21There's nothing I can think of that remotely sounds like this ever in ghost
- 38:24Face's career. But then I press play on a song called Trap the Phone
- 38:32and it's literally a trap record. Well, ghost Face not sounding good over
- 38:39the beat. I don't care what you say. I don't care how many
- 38:44albums he released. We love him. He got classed, but we can't
- 38:51critique him and it doesn't always have to be positive just because of who he
- 38:54is. The song was terrible. I didn't get through it it. I
- 39:00don't care what you say. It's one thing because similarly old nas did it.
- 39:05Go back and listen to them Kings disease, trap songs, some songs
- 39:09was hot. Okay, they were, so maybe that's the case. Maybe
- 39:15maybe you need a hit boy to come in and say, Yo, do
- 39:19this, do this, do this, because it just didn't sound good to
- 39:22me. It sounded like Smike said, Yo, you gotta you gotta do
- 39:28one to you know, get them kids. Maybe not stolen that, Yo,
- 39:30you gotta get one of them in there, you know, to get
- 39:34them kids and those faces not a dummy. He like, Yo, Okay,
- 39:37I'll try it. He tried. Then there's the outro, and then
- 39:45there's the song yep with Remy Mind, which really feels like it has the
- 39:52same formula as his song with Jada Kids Run, but it's not as good.
- 39:59So overall, I think if you like ghost Face, you're gonna like
- 40:02a lot of the songs on here, because I know I like more than
- 40:07I don't like. I just think towards the end, like I said with
- 40:09the Conway record, the momentum is lost, and I feel like, considering
- 40:16nineteen tracks and what four skits? You The skits were cool, so you
- 40:22could have kept them, but you probably could have dropped about four songs and
- 40:28made this a solid album. That's it, just four songs. It would
- 40:34It would have been a nice package of an album, but I don't know
- 40:37what the goal was with those, and please don't make any videos for those,
- 40:40like make video with the one with az right that still has that feel.
- 40:45But I just was I couldn't believe it because I was smiling listening to
- 40:51that first half of the ghost Face and when the second half hit, I
- 40:53was like, oh, oh, I don't know about this. So there
- 41:00you have it. Have you heard Conway the Machine's new albums Slant Face or
