- 0:15SPEAKER_01: All right, everybody.
- 0:17SPEAKER_01: Welcome back for another episode of B and R at the Movies Podcast.
- 0:20SPEAKER_01: I'm Barry.
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: And I'm Robin.
- 0:21SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 0:22SPEAKER_01: So this week it was your choice of film.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 0:24SPEAKER_01: So I'll let you go and take us away on this one.
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: So we're going to watch a Netflix movie.
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: It's it's brand new right now when we're taping this.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: Uh Remarkably Bright Creature.
- 0:36SPEAKER_01: Creatures.
- 0:37SPEAKER_01: Creatures.
- 0:37SPEAKER_01: Excuse me.
- 0:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah, Remarkably Bright Creatures.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: And it's on Netflix, and neither one of us has seen it.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: And I have purposely not learned much about it.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: And you've tried really hard not to listen to what people are saying.
- 0:49SPEAKER_01: It's it's weird.
- 0:50SPEAKER_01: This is the first time I've had it where we've had a movie where we've talked about in advance of like this is what we're gonna watch.
- 0:56SPEAKER_01: And people kept talking to me about it, and I'm just like, no, but they're excited about it, so it must be good, you know, kind of thing.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: So um it does star uh Sally Field and Lewis Pullman.
- 1:10SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: And I don't know what Lewis Pullman.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: I looked him up, really have never seen any of the movies that he's made, so this will be new for me.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: Um the director is Olivia Newman, and I looked her up.
- 1:23SPEAKER_01: Olivia Newman.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: Never seen any of her films that she's directed, so it's all new to me.
- 1:28SPEAKER_01: There you go.
- 1:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:30SPEAKER_01: Get to dive in with a bunch of people we we're not super familiar with.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: But the one thing this is Sally Phil we are, but yeah.
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: This is uh based off of a novel.
- 1:38SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: So it is there's you know, reality is suspended, okay?
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: All right, you can have to roll with it.
- 1:47SPEAKER_01: Is it is it like um big fish, uh you know, the the corporate.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: I don't think it's that weird, but you know it's it's you know, reality is suspended.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: Uh I'm not gonna I I know a little bit more about it than you do, and I'm not gonna say anything.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: But what I am gonna say is that I read the book a long time ago.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: Not this book, but a different book.
- 2:08SPEAKER_01: Oh, okay.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: The Soul of the Octopus by Cy Um Montgomery.
- 2:14SPEAKER_01: So is it the same author?
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: No.
- 2:16SPEAKER_01: Oh, okay.
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: So this is based off a novel.
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: The Soul of an Octopus is actually uh it's a biography, and it is about a woman who did make a connection with an octopus.
- 2:28SPEAKER_01: Interesting.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: And um it's fantastic.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: I did I just kept thinking about it.
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: So um I think and actually one of the octopus that she met, she met a few of them at the aquarium and really made a connection with them.
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: One of the octopus that they well, I'm not gonna say much more than that.
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: I'll talk about it afterwards.
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: Okay But there's there's a little bit of connection with the which she went through and kind of what this movie is about.
- 3:01SPEAKER_01: But it is from a novel, so we're not you know so the novel is kind is is the novel actually based off of the true story of what you read?
- 3:11SPEAKER_01: Okay, so it's so it's not like an adaptation of that.
- 3:14SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: It's completely different.
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: But it is this making a connection with uh an octopus.
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: Interesting.
- 3:21SPEAKER_01: Never never even thought of that.
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: And so um, yeah, it can happen, but it ain't gonna happen this way.
- 3:27SPEAKER_00: That's the way the movie shows it.
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 3:29SPEAKER_01: All right, but it can happen.
- 3:30SPEAKER_01: That's the reality suspension.
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: Octopus are very uh intelligent.
- 3:34SPEAKER_01: I have definitely heard that where they're they're one of the most intelligent creatures.
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: They are, they're fascinating.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but you know, so this this I hope they do I think they will do justice by the octopus in this movie.
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: Okay, uh but um but yeah, I'm I'm really anxious to see it because I do like Sally Field.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: I identify with Sally Field Um very much, especially in her older age.
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: So I'm I'm there with you, Sally.
- 4:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 4:01SPEAKER_01: It's pretty it's pretty interesting, like watching like you know her career trajectory, you know, and it's like because she's been she's been a stable actress for many, many, many years.
- 4:11SPEAKER_00: I mean but before that happened, yeah, and she was around when people did television, they just pigeonholed you.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: You're only television, you can't television and she had to work hard to get into films.
- 4:22SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 4:22SPEAKER_00: And then she did some fabulous films and got, you know, Oscars for them and nominations and and then she's done a variety.
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: She does light comedy, uh, she's she does it all.
- 4:33SPEAKER_01: Well, because comedy was what she was known for, you know, from doing you know, for doing uh Laverne and Charlie and Laverne Charlie, um um um help me out.
- 4:41SPEAKER_01: What am I thinking of?
- 4:43SPEAKER_01: That she was on.
- 4:44SPEAKER_00: Well she was on Gidget a million years ago.
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: I don't know what one you're thinking of.
- 4:48SPEAKER_01: Oh maybe I don't know if that was it.
- 4:50SPEAKER_00: She was on Gidget, she was on The Flying Nun.
- 4:54SPEAKER_01: Don't even I know I mean I know I know of the Flying Nun.
- 4:57SPEAKER_01: And she was in um It must have been something else I was thinking of.
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: Family?
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: No, family.
- 5:03SPEAKER_00: Okay, whatever.
- 5:04SPEAKER_00: But yeah, but she uh but no, she she definitely can do drama and I I like her very much and she's if you ever get a chance to have her watch her on Graham Norton, she's fabulous.
- 5:16SPEAKER_01: I have seen her, I have seen it when she was on on Graham Norton and then it was uh it was her and Chris Pine and then they Frommy Malik.
- 5:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yep, yeah, she is fabulous on that.
- 5:28SPEAKER_00: She's just so real and so grounded, and it's just I that's why I like her.
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: So anyway, really anxious to see her in this.
- 5:34SPEAKER_00: I think she probably does a fabulous job, and people are already talking about it, as you already know.
- 5:38SPEAKER_00: Yep, so it should be kind of fun.
- 5:41SPEAKER_01: So awesome, yeah.
- 5:42SPEAKER_01: All right, well, we are going to dive in and watch remarkably bright creatures, and then we will come back a little bit to talk about it.
- 5:49SPEAKER_01: Okay, all right, we will be back in a little while.
- 5:58SPEAKER_01: All right, everybody, welcome back.
- 6:00SPEAKER_01: We just got done watching Remarkably Bright Creatures, and since this was your pick, that means I gotta start us off on this one.
- 6:10SPEAKER_01: Uh, I liked it a lot.
- 6:12SPEAKER_01: I thought it was really good.
- 6:13SPEAKER_01: Um, I thought it was really well, really well done, really well put together.
- 6:19SPEAKER_01: Uh the cinematography on it, I thought it was fantastic.
- 6:23SPEAKER_01: I love it.
- 6:23SPEAKER_01: Uh, you know, it was it was a very beautifully shot film.
- 6:28SPEAKER_01: Um lot of lot of really good cinematography work on that.
- 6:32SPEAKER_01: I like that a lot.
- 6:33SPEAKER_01: I like the use of light a lot on it, like, you know, and then uh the way that they would uh depict like trying to be like underwater and like kind of like you know, um just like from the P from that point of view and stuff.
- 6:46SPEAKER_01: Um I thought that was really well done.
- 6:48SPEAKER_01: Um I love Sally Field in this.
- 6:50SPEAKER_01: I thought this was fantastic.
- 6:52SPEAKER_01: I swear this was like made, this was made for her.
- 6:55SPEAKER_01: Uh she was so good.
- 6:57SPEAKER_01: Um she's fun to watch.
- 7:00SPEAKER_00: She really is funny.
- 7:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah, she's fun to watch.
- 7:03SPEAKER_01: Um, I like uh I like all the characters.
- 7:06SPEAKER_01: I thought they were really well done.
- 7:07SPEAKER_01: I like her little knitting group, and it's like how they're all just wild, they're just like overpowering, just like women that try to just control everything.
- 7:17SPEAKER_01: I was like, so I thought that was I thought that was really, really funny.
- 7:21SPEAKER_01: And then uh yeah, even um you know, Cameron and then all the other all the other characters, and it's like, yeah, I thought they were all um all really well done.
- 7:31SPEAKER_01: I mean there's cliches, of course, you know, of just like you know, but it was still it was it was still done really well.
- 7:39SPEAKER_01: Um but yeah, um I thought um I like the story, but I it was kind of like uh I wanna I don't want to say predictable, yeah.
- 7:53SPEAKER_01: But it was almost like formula kind of a little bit.
- 7:56SPEAKER_00: They kind of wrapped it up in a bow pretty tight.
- 7:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 8:00SPEAKER_00: And they and that really wasn't necessary, but I do know it was based on a novel, so I mean that was the material they're working with.
- 8:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and when you're trying to pay you're paying homage to the novel, you know, so you kind of wonder if it's a few.
- 8:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you can't really want to really mess it mess with it too much.
- 8:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 8:18SPEAKER_01: Um, but yeah, I thought it I thought it was I thought it was really, really done uh quite nicely.
- 8:23SPEAKER_01: I like that it was about the octopus, but not like it wasn't like all about the octopus all the time.
- 8:33SPEAKER_01: Right, right.
- 8:34SPEAKER_01: I guess I should say.
- 8:35SPEAKER_01: So I like that aspect of it.
- 8:37SPEAKER_00: I think there was an interview in Sallyfield said, yeah, one of the best co-stars they ever worked with.
- 8:43SPEAKER_01: Well, and I'm trying to tell, like, uh there were some shots where you look and it's like obviously it's a real octopus that they were using, and then there were some that were just like it's probably CGI'd.
- 8:55SPEAKER_00: Most of it was.
- 8:56SPEAKER_00: It wasn't a real octopus.
- 8:58SPEAKER_01: It wasn't real for most of it.
- 8:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 9:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 9:00SPEAKER_00: I was gonna say there were a couple shots where I was thinking, I'm like, I was like, but they tried really hard, I mean, just to get the movements and everything right.
- 9:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 9:08SPEAKER_00: And the when I was telling you about the book, um The Soul of an Octopus, uh huh.
- 9:13SPEAKER_00: One of the octopus that she met, this the other author um was Athena.
- 9:21SPEAKER_00: And they based this octopus on the movements that Athena did.
- 9:27SPEAKER_00: So they in so um they they mentioned that that it was Athena.
- 9:31SPEAKER_00: So interesting.
- 9:32SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 9:33SPEAKER_00: So um, but yeah, so no, it was it was all CGI.
- 9:37SPEAKER_01: If well, and there were there were some that it it was, I mean the CGI was done really well.
- 9:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 9:43SPEAKER_01: Um, so it wasn't like Yeah, they did a really good job.
- 9:46SPEAKER_00: They did.
- 9:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so that was that was done that was done good.
- 9:50SPEAKER_01: But there were yeah, there was a couple, there's a couple moments where you're just like, okay, they probably want to put a real octopus in that situation where you're gonna be.
- 10:01SPEAKER_00: It's not like training a dog.
- 10:03SPEAKER_01: Right, exactly.
- 10:04SPEAKER_01: So, yeah, so there's some there are some situations where you're just like, okay, obviously they had to have a CGI and it's like so.
- 10:12SPEAKER_00: But no, they did a very good job with it and and very realistic, and the idea because an octopus does not have any bones.
- 10:19SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 10:20SPEAKER_00: So, you know, a very large octopus can go through the size of an orange.
- 10:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's so wild that they're gonna be able to do that.
- 10:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it just can do that.
- 10:27SPEAKER_00: So they really they really were very correct and like um ev even in kind of letting people know w what they can do and how they they they taste with their s their little suckers.
- 10:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 10:40SPEAKER_00: You know?
- 10:41SPEAKER_00: And uh yeah, it's it's it's kind of amazing.
- 10:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's pretty wild, it's pretty wild.
- 10:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 10:47SPEAKER_01: Um so I thought I I thought that aspect was really good.
- 10:50SPEAKER_01: I thought I I like that.
- 10:51SPEAKER_01: Uh I thought the voiceover was was interesting of of the octopus.
- 10:56SPEAKER_00: It was yeah, and I and when I heard that was that's what it was, I'm going, what?
- 11:00SPEAKER_00: And then it was but it wasn't overwhelming.
- 11:03SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 11:04SPEAKER_00: It was it was it was it was good.
- 11:06SPEAKER_00: I mean it it made it very it was kind of fantasy, obviously.
- 11:11SPEAKER_00: But still it it wasn't it it didn't overwhelm the film for me.
- 11:15SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 11:16SPEAKER_01: Well, because in the end he is the narrator, right?
- 11:19SPEAKER_01: You know, he is the one who's who's telling the story of you know the people around him and and then you know, like you know, from his point of view and stuff, and you know, and then just like what he's feeling and how he's how he's trying to help the people that he's around.
- 11:35SPEAKER_01: So yeah, I I I thought that yeah, I thought it was I thought that part was good.
- 11:39SPEAKER_01: It wasn't it like you said, it wasn't over overdone, it wasn't overpowering.
- 11:43SPEAKER_01: Because I first I was thinking like, oh, is it gonna be like look who's talking where it's like the whole film the whole film is that and I was thinking I'm like no, yeah, that that I'm glad it wasn't that type of thing because I I don't know if I could have enjoyed it.
- 12:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I don't I don't think I would have either.
- 12:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah, um but I'm glad you like Sally Field.
- 12:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, I thought she was good.
- 12:06SPEAKER_01: Um I did find it a little unrealistic that she takes a very prominent character in the aquarium, sets it free, and she keeps her job.
- 12:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that was like unrealistic there.
- 12:19SPEAKER_00: I don't think they'd let you stay.
- 12:22SPEAKER_00: But it was this whole thing that it's a small town, right?
- 12:26SPEAKER_00: They know each other, you know, everybody knows everybody else, kind of thing.
- 12:30SPEAKER_01: And they were all kind they all understood that m that Marcellus the octopus was at the end of his life, that he was gonna be around much longer anyway.
- 12:38SPEAKER_01: They literally already had the next octopus that was gonna be his replacement, as they said.
- 12:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 12:44SPEAKER_00: So it was yeah, it was uh if it wasn't a small town, it's like no freaking way, which you'd be able to stay.
- 12:50SPEAKER_00: They go, mm-mm.
- 12:52SPEAKER_01: But yeah, because the Denver aquarium or something, it's like, yeah, no.
- 12:56SPEAKER_01: You're not gonna be doing that.
- 12:57SPEAKER_01: You lost your job.
- 12:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 12:59SPEAKER_00: But uh, but yeah, it it was supposed to be more of a small town, yeah.
- 13:04SPEAKER_01: Well, and I and it they definitely drove home the small town vibe and the whole small town community of you know, everybody knows everybody, everybody knows everything that's going on in everybody's life, and then the gossip, you know, talking about like everybody what's going on and stuff.
- 13:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and so I thought that they that was done, that was done pretty accurately.
- 13:27SPEAKER_01: I feel it's like pretty spot on.
- 13:30SPEAKER_00: And then I could feel for Sally Field's character too, how didn't like that kind of gossip and didn't want to be part of that.
- 13:37SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 13:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah, felt right, yeah.
- 13:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I so I I thought all that was was done was done really good.
- 13:44SPEAKER_01: Um I don't know, the whole cliche of it being that she's hurt, you know, that's it.
- 13:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that that was like it's like really that's where this story is.
- 13:56SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's it's okay and it's kind of sweet, I guess.
- 14:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but um I would have been fine if they would have just ended up just staying friends, you know, and then if she decided to stay there and then he was just her roommate at that point, and then you know she felt comfortable enough to have him stay in the other room and stuff.
- 14:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah, just just good friends.
- 14:16SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you know, yeah, just yeah, well, you technically become a family, right?
- 14:21SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 14:21SPEAKER_00: Create your family.
- 14:22SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 14:23SPEAKER_00: And your family becomes the family.
- 14:26SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 14:26SPEAKER_01: Your family is just the people the people you choose to surround yourself with.
- 14:30SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 14:30SPEAKER_01: And I I think that would have been a much better way of but like we said, it's a novel.
- 14:37SPEAKER_01: It's a novel, it's based off the book, it's not winz.
- 14:39SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 14:40SPEAKER_00: People that love the book, and I heard this book is like super was super popular and people loved it.
- 14:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I can imagine when they want to watch this film, you can't change it.
- 14:49SPEAKER_01: I mean, and if you're gonna do something as drastic as that, then you would have the uproar of the people that love the novel and then their own.
- 14:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it wouldn't go over very well.
- 14:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you can't.
- 14:58SPEAKER_00: You kind of have you do have to kind of respect the the story.
- 15:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, you definitely do.
- 15:04SPEAKER_01: But you know, I if it was if I'm writing the story, yeah, then I don't have them be, you know, uh grandmother and grandson.
- 15:16SPEAKER_00: I really like the whole dynamic until it got to that point.
- 15:20SPEAKER_00: And then it was like no.
- 15:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah, because I I would I if I was writing it, I wouldn't have I don't know how I would have changed it, maybe just to have them be friends and just that's what they're doing.
- 15:31SPEAKER_00: I mean, just because they they had a strong connection anyway.
- 15:33SPEAKER_00: So why not just let that be their strong connection that they are their friendship is their connection.
- 15:39SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 15:39SPEAKER_01: Exactly, exactly.
- 15:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and I thought that I thought that too.
- 15:42SPEAKER_00: And it's like and even to add that part where they're supposed to be actually related, yeah.
- 15:47SPEAKER_00: It's like it didn't add anything to their connection.
- 15:51SPEAKER_00: It didn't add anything.
- 15:52SPEAKER_00: It it just like it was just there.
- 15:55SPEAKER_01: I mean it it did make it where, you know, like we were saying, like, you know, technically, yes, they now they do have family because both of them are with they were without family.
- 16:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 16:05SPEAKER_01: And but like we're saying, it's like you don't have to be related yeah, you don't have to be blood relatives to have a family.
- 16:12SPEAKER_00: Exactly, you know.
- 16:12SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 16:13SPEAKER_00: And uh I and they could have they could have cut the person could have done that if they wanted to, that way.
- 16:20SPEAKER_00: But you know, but it was well done.
- 16:22SPEAKER_00: I mean, if that was the material they were working with, it was well done.
- 16:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and uh yeah, I'm I did enjoy it.
- 16:28SPEAKER_00: Um I didn't cry, sorry.
- 16:31SPEAKER_00: You know, it's weird that I get I get kind of like I get like momentarily like choked up about like a little something, and then it's like but no, I mean it wasn't like bobbling, but it was it was sweet and I I enjoyed the performances and I enjoyed Sally Field's performance very much.
- 16:49SPEAKER_00: And uh yeah, I I I I liked it where she got to be the main character in a in a film.
- 16:56SPEAKER_00: Um because I that's that is what I've liked.
- 17:00SPEAKER_00: I it's okay when she's an ensemble and that sort of thing.
- 17:03SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 17:04SPEAKER_00: But I I do like it when she just gets to be herself.
- 17:08SPEAKER_01: And and this I I mean, obviously I don't I I don't know her personally, but it it's felt like pretty natural as far as like you know, it like this almost like could be just her, you know, being you know, being herself, but you know, maybe um I don't know, maybe just kind of like moments of heightened stuff that you know wouldn't normally be her or something like that.
- 17:30SPEAKER_01: But and of course, I'm like I said, I I don't know her personally, obviously, so I don't I don't know how she is in real life.
- 17:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but uh but that's that's the feeling I get from her.
- 17:40SPEAKER_00: And what I really liked about it, and this is where I've heard that Sally Field gets a lot of criticism because she looks like an old lady.
- 17:49SPEAKER_00: Well uh and and the color of her hair is the color of her hair.
- 17:53SPEAKER_00: That is the way that is the color of her hair.
- 17:55SPEAKER_00: But it's you know and they didn't try to like pretty you know, make her no, it was it was very natural.
- 18:02SPEAKER_00: It's like she looked natural.
- 18:05SPEAKER_01: Well, and that's my thing is that you're cast you're casting Sally Field to be Sally Field now, not Sally Field 20 years ago, not 30 years ago.
- 18:14SPEAKER_01: It's her now, and it's like and that's what this is exactly what this felt like.
- 18:18SPEAKER_01: This was her now.
- 18:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and that's why she got I it felt like she just fit in there very nicely.
- 18:24SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 18:25SPEAKER_00: And uh and hopefully she felt that way too doing the film.
- 18:28SPEAKER_01: Because there were so many things about her character that are so relatable of you know, of she was, you know, she had a family, and then you know, she you know, she's now you know, she's a you know, she lost her husband, then she lost her son, and it's like you know, she's finding stuff to, you know, you know, fill her days of stuff, you know, so she has a a little uh you know, a part, you know, part-time job, a little small job or something.
- 18:54SPEAKER_00: And she's a little lost, she's got a a drift.
- 18:57SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 19:03SPEAKER_00: You know, very d normal and and the same the same with uh you know Lewis Bowman's character, Camera.
- 19:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah, Cameron.
- 19:10SPEAKER_00: You know, same thing.
- 19:11SPEAKER_00: Lost, a little drift, didn't know w which way to turn, kind of thing.
- 19:15SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 19:15SPEAKER_00: And then when you finally n make the right make the decision and you know it's the right one.
- 19:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, exactly.
- 19:22SPEAKER_00: And and I like I do like that message a lot.
- 19:25SPEAKER_00: That's good.
- 19:26SPEAKER_01: I I I liked a lot of the the little moments in this film a lot.
- 19:31SPEAKER_01: I liked like the paddle boarding scene of with him trying to trying to do it and you know he's standing up and he's wobbling stuff, you know.
- 19:42SPEAKER_00: I liked it in the car when she took the phone.
- 19:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I thought that was I thought that was great.
- 19:47SPEAKER_00: She did and it just seemed like are you acting or is that just you?
- 19:52SPEAKER_01: Right, because it felt it felt so natural so natural.
- 19:56SPEAKER_00: It was like it was so cute.
- 19:58SPEAKER_00: I was like, oh my god.
- 19:59SPEAKER_01: So uh the one part of the story that I don't know if they if there was more explanation and they cut it or whatever.
- 20:08SPEAKER_01: So they do the road trip to go to meet the guy who he thinks is his father, right?
- 20:16SPEAKER_01: Goes to the house, yeah, and then there's the guy who greets him at the door and then it's a pulling a gun on him.
- 20:25SPEAKER_01: I'm guessing that that is the that is her that is the the father of the guy that he thinks is his father.
- 20:35SPEAKER_01: Like so it would be like that.
- 20:37SPEAKER_01: You know, I'm I'm seeing because he said you he said, Oh, you said that name again, and you know, he pull that's when he pulls the gun.
- 20:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 20:44SPEAKER_01: And so that's when I was like, and yeah, that really wasn't explained.
- 20:49SPEAKER_00: I mean, you knew it wasn't the person that he was looking for.
- 20:52SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 20:52SPEAKER_00: But I but really I was just thinking, no, that's just somebody that owned the house before him.
- 20:58SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 20:58SPEAKER_00: And because I mean they looked it up in a phone book.
- 21:02SPEAKER_00: Well I mean, how old school is that?
- 21:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and that's what I was thinking too.
- 21:06SPEAKER_01: I'm like, So everything changes from the phone book.
- 21:10SPEAKER_01: But but the part that keeps drawing me back is when he was like, Oh, you know, you've come to me when I can't think of the the name that the name of the character that they said, and then that's when the guy who lives there is like, You said that name again, I told you not to say that name, and pulls the gun.
- 21:28SPEAKER_01: And that's why I was like, that's why I was thinking, I'm like, okay, and then when he could be when he met up with him later on, then he's like, Oh, I had this really bad relationship with my father.
- 21:39SPEAKER_00: So it could have been, yeah.
- 21:40SPEAKER_01: And so that's why I was thinking that Yeah, you're probably right.
- 21:42SPEAKER_00: Then yeah, if you think about it, because you know, um, yeah, it could be that that was his son that man's son and he didn't want to talk about it.
- 21:52SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 21:53SPEAKER_01: Didn't want to talk about didn't want to talk about it.
- 21:55SPEAKER_00: You know, didn't believe in what he was doing and so I think that's what it I I'm
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: I guess so.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: I didn't I didn't really put a lot of thought into that one.
- 22:03SPEAKER_00: I kind of let that scene kind of go.
- 22:04SPEAKER_00: That was just weird.
- 22:06SPEAKER_00: Well, and that's what I was thinking.
- 22:07SPEAKER_00: I thought it wasn't really explained enough to me, so I just didn't pay attention.
- 22:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 22:11SPEAKER_00: And then it didn't matter.
- 22:12SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 22:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 22:13SPEAKER_01: It's never brought up again.
- 22:14SPEAKER_01: It's never, it's never done.
- 22:15SPEAKER_01: So I'm wondering if there was more exposition around that, but it was trimmed off or cut or you know.
- 22:22SPEAKER_00: And then maybe so.
- 22:23SPEAKER_00: Maybe so.
- 22:24SPEAKER_00: A little bit.
- 22:25SPEAKER_00: A little bit.
- 22:26SPEAKER_00: Because when he finally does meet the man that he thinks is his father, right?
- 22:30SPEAKER_00: It's like, how did that happen?
- 22:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 22:32SPEAKER_00: All of a sudden it's- Why would he call call him?
- 22:35SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 22:35SPEAKER_01: And he it was like this whole thing of like, oh, I can't get a hold of him.
- 22:38SPEAKER_01: I can't get in touch with him.
- 22:40SPEAKER_01: He can't find anybody who know, you know, who knows him to be able to do it.
- 22:43SPEAKER_01: And then all of a sudden it's like, boom, oh yeah, he's he's in he's in touch with him.
- 22:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 22:49SPEAKER_00: So that was that was a jump for me.
- 22:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we're just like, yeah, I feel like I feel like there was missing stuff there.
- 22:54SPEAKER_00: And I, you know, and I I probably, you know, if I'd read the book, I would it would probably explain everything.
- 23:02SPEAKER_00: You know, uh and that's probably very true.
- 23:03SPEAKER_00: That's what I'm saying.
- 23:04SPEAKER_00: And I do feel like there was little bits and pieces towards the end.
- 23:08SPEAKER_00: It seemed like it was kind of rushed because they wanted to get to the end.
- 23:12SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 23:13SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 23:13SPEAKER_00: And um I mean that was okay, but you know, the the pacing of it was quite slow in the beginning and had but it was slow with purpose and it felt right.
- 23:25SPEAKER_00: Because it felt like almost like underwater kind of thing, you know.
- 23:29SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 23:30SPEAKER_00: But then at the end, it just seemed kind of a different pace, and uh it felt like they were just trying to put the story together at the end, the way it's supposed to end.
- 23:40SPEAKER_01: And that's what I th exactly.
- 23:41SPEAKER_01: I think that's exactly right.
- 23:42SPEAKER_01: Where it's like they had like these beats of like, okay, we need to hit here, we need to hit here, and then they're like, Okay, well, we're kind of cutting short on time, but we need to still hit these beats.
- 23:55SPEAKER_01: Okay, so we're definitely gonna hit those marks, but now we gotta kind of we're just gonna we're just gonna do them shorter or more condensed into it.
- 24:02SPEAKER_00: I I would I would be really interested in someone who like read the book and liked it and then watched the movie and what they thought of it.
- 24:08SPEAKER_00: Because they because again, and once you read a book and then you watch the movie, you get a whole different take on it.
- 24:14SPEAKER_01: And there's so many times where it's like that I know so many people that when they know a book so well and then they see a film and then they're so disappointed.
- 24:21SPEAKER_01: I know it's like oh and they're like, And it's like you can't do everything in a novel in the you know, that you can for a film and you don't have the same time restraints because in a book you have no time restraints, you can go on forever.
- 24:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you can really describe and everything, you know, and this yeah, so hopefully for people that love the book or who read the book, that this does, like you said, hit the all the beats and hits hits all the main points of what the story is supposed to be.
- 24:54SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 24:54SPEAKER_01: I hope yeah, I hope it I hope it does.
- 24:57SPEAKER_00: So yeah, yeah, it's it's it's a sweet story, and I I really enjoyed it.
- 25:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I'm really glad to watch it.
- 25:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and and now I can finally talk talk to people.
- 25:06SPEAKER_01: That like I said, it was so random.
- 25:09SPEAKER_01: I was like, because I mean this film came out, you know, it's it's hasn't been out for very long.
- 25:14SPEAKER_01: A couple weeks.
- 25:14SPEAKER_01: A couple weeks.
- 25:16SPEAKER_01: Nobody has ever done this before of like of like so many people like like insist on talking about a film, and I'm just like, I can just no, just stop talking to me about it.
- 25:25SPEAKER_01: It's like I can't know about it.
- 25:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and the yeah, when somebody Yeah, so now I would like you it'd be great to talk to somebody in the scene and say, Yeah, so what do you think about it?
- 25:34SPEAKER_00: What did you you know blah blah blah?
- 25:36SPEAKER_00: But yeah, I can see with some people that you know that this is definitely their speed.
- 25:43SPEAKER_00: This is kind of my speed of a movie, uh, not completely anymore.
- 25:48SPEAKER_00: I think I've seen a lot of films that have the same kind of feeling.
- 25:51SPEAKER_00: You know, you know, but this but this was a very nice film.
- 25:55SPEAKER_00: It really was.
- 25:55SPEAKER_00: It was a very nice film.
- 25:57SPEAKER_01: Yes, it absolutely was.
- 25:58SPEAKER_01: It had a lot of a lot of good moments in it, and yeah, and it felt it felt good.
- 26:03SPEAKER_01: And it was I mean, in the end, it's it was a feel-good film.
- 26:07SPEAKER_01: I mean, that's that's what that feels like what exactly what the intent was supposed to be.
- 26:11SPEAKER_00: And that's that's I'm sure that's the book too.
- 26:13SPEAKER_00: It makes you feel good.
- 26:14SPEAKER_01: It makes you feel good.
- 26:14SPEAKER_01: There you go.
- 26:16SPEAKER_01: Um, but yeah, so I don't know.
- 26:18SPEAKER_01: I kind of I kind of want to know a little bit more about the the areas that they shot in.
- 26:22SPEAKER_01: Um I mean Oh yeah, yeah.
- 26:24SPEAKER_00: I think I read a little bit of where they shot.
- 26:26SPEAKER_01: I think it it feels I don't I don't I kept thinking it had to be um you know northeast, and I'm thinking I was thinking like supposed to be in the northeast because they talk about Portland.
- 26:38SPEAKER_01: Right, right.
- 26:38SPEAKER_00: I was thinking Portland, Maine.
- 26:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 26:41SPEAKER_01: Um and um Well, it could have been Portland, Oregon.
- 26:45SPEAKER_00: But yeah, no, probably not.
- 26:47SPEAKER_01: No, but maybe not.
- 26:48SPEAKER_01: It looked more like it felt more east, it felt more east coast, felt more more Maine, more than that.
- 26:54SPEAKER_00: I think technically they they filmed a lot of it in Canada though, even though it was supposed to be in the East Coast.
- 27:00SPEAKER_01: Well in the United States, yeah, because you can do, I mean, you can go to BC and you can go to there's a lot of places in Canada that would obviously, you know, it's same, you know, same, you know, geographical coastline, you know, same you know, environment stuff.
- 27:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah, absolutely.
- 27:15SPEAKER_01: You could totally do that.
- 27:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it definitely it definitely held up.
- 27:18SPEAKER_01: I kind of it kind of makes me want to find that little town and kind of go check it out, you know.
- 27:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah, there you go.
- 27:23SPEAKER_01: So there you go.
- 27:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 27:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it did right, it did remind me a lot of Maine.
- 27:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it definitely had that, it definitely had that vibe.
- 27:31SPEAKER_01: Definitely had that main vibe.
- 27:32SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 27:32SPEAKER_00: We've been to Maine.
- 27:33SPEAKER_01: Yes, absolutely, yeah.
- 27:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and it had that's kind of that same kind of like you know, coastal kind of little small town little little vibe going on.
- 27:40SPEAKER_00: It's never warm.
- 27:42SPEAKER_01: It's always cloudy and always cloudy and gray.
- 27:44SPEAKER_00: It was like that's why everything's green, but right, it never really gets hot.
- 27:49SPEAKER_01: No, no, it's just it's either uh cloudy and chilly or rainy.
- 27:54SPEAKER_00: I mean it can be sunny, but it's not gonna get hot.
- 27:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so you're always you know dressed the way they were dressed.
- 28:00SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 28:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so yeah, but that seemed very realistic.
- 28:03SPEAKER_01: Definitely realistic.
- 28:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so all right.
- 28:06SPEAKER_01: Well, should we go ahead and wrap this one up?
- 28:08SPEAKER_00: I guess so.
- 28:08SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 28:09SPEAKER_01: Well, thank you everybody for listening.
- 28:10SPEAKER_01: Make sure you guys go check out Remarkably, oh, I was gonna say beautiful.
- 28:15SPEAKER_01: Bright.
- 28:16SPEAKER_01: Remarkably bright, huh?
- 28:18SPEAKER_01: I thought got the title there.
- 28:19SPEAKER_01: Remarkably bright creatures.
- 28:22SPEAKER_01: Until next time, I'm Barry.
- 28:24SPEAKER_01: And I'm Robin.
- 28:25SPEAKER_01: And we will talk to you guys later.
