- 0:26SPEAKER_00: It's my pleasure to welcome Jeff Paskey back to the Cover Four podcast.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: Jeff is the athletic director at Johnson City High School and the Section 4 football coordinator.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: Jeff will share with us his insight and expertise on everything Section 4 football.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: Welcome, Jeff.
- 0:45SPEAKER_01: Thanks, Tim, for having me on.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: Appreciate it, Jeff.
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: Let's kick things off here with uh what's the state of the uh section four football?
- 0:55SPEAKER_01: Well, we have 37 football teams this year in section four, and there's been a little bit of movement in terms of uh Norwich uh going down from Class B to Class C as well as Waverly.
- 1:11SPEAKER_01: Uh so now we have uh you know three teams at the AA level, the same three teams, Elmira, Corning, and Ithaca.
- 1:20SPEAKER_01: We have four teams in the A, Horseheads, UE, Vestal, and Binghamton.
- 1:26SPEAKER_01: We have three teams in B, Maine Annual, Owigo, Johnson City.
- 1:31SPEAKER_01: Uh Class C, we have eight teams in two divisions.
- 1:35SPEAKER_01: Uh, the one division, Division Four is Shenango Valley, Norwich, Oneana, and Waverly.
- 1:41SPEAKER_01: And then Division Five, still Class C is Shenango Forks, Susquehanna Valley, Whitney Point, and Windsor.
- 1:48SPEAKER_01: And Class D is two divisions of six.
- 1:53SPEAKER_01: We have basically an East and a West.
- 1:55SPEAKER_01: Uh the Bears are back.
- 1:57SPEAKER_01: Bainbridge, Guildford, Afton, Harpersville.
- 2:00SPEAKER_01: Uh, Deposit Hancock is the second team, Del High, Green Oxford is combined again.
- 2:06SPEAKER_01: Sydney and then Walton uh merged with Downsville.
- 2:10SPEAKER_01: So that's the East.
- 2:12SPEAKER_01: And then Division 7 is the West.
- 2:14SPEAKER_01: We have Groton, Newark Valley, Skyler, which is Watkins Glen, and Odessa Montour.
- 2:21SPEAKER_01: Uh Spencer Cander combined as they have been for years now.
- 2:25SPEAKER_01: Tyoga and Trumansburg.
- 2:27SPEAKER_01: So that's the West D.
- 2:28SPEAKER_01: And then in the eight-man, we have seven teams: uh Dryden, Notre Dame, Lansing, Moravia, Newfield, Thomas Edison, and Unitego Franklin.
- 2:40SPEAKER_01: So that's kind of the makeup of our double A's down to eight-man.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: Now in that Unitygo Franklin, is Unidilla.
- 2:49SPEAKER_01: Yes, Unadilla Valley is also with them.
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: And you said Downsville is with Walton?
- 2:54SPEAKER_01: Correct.
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: Good.
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: Thank you for that update.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: Appreciate that.
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: So that uh what does that do to any uh potential playoff scenarios?
- 3:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so playoffs, uh the there's three double A's, so all of them make the playoffs.
- 3:11SPEAKER_01: The three will play the two, uh just like last year, and then the winner will go on and play the number one seed at the at the number one seed.
- 3:21SPEAKER_01: Uh A, there's four teams, four will play at one, three will play at two, and the winner will play at the at the highest seed remaining as well for the A's.
- 3:30SPEAKER_01: And then the B, C, D, and Eight Man will put at a neutral site, which the our Section 4 football committee should be picking uh either this week or early next week, uh for potential hosts.
- 3:47SPEAKER_01: JC, Emmy, and Owigo are the B, so three will play at the two, and then the winner will play at that neutral site.
- 3:54SPEAKER_01: And then for the C's, there's the two divisions of four.
- 3:58SPEAKER_01: The top two in each division will make the playoffs.
- 4:02SPEAKER_01: Uh the number two seed from the one division will play at the division winner, and vice versa.
- 4:09SPEAKER_01: Uh and then the D's, we have eight teams getting in this year.
- 4:15SPEAKER_01: And uh the top uh the top uh the division winner from six and seven will make it, and then the the next uh the runner up will make it as well.
- 4:29SPEAKER_01: So that'll be four teams, and then four teams will be uh make it based on the Bradley Terry model, which is uh a uh point system that we use that takes into account strength of schedule and uh just similar to our point system, but it's all done on the high school sports stat website, so you can see it by week uh where your team ranks.
- 4:55SPEAKER_00: Oh, okay.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: Nice.
- 4:57SPEAKER_01: So we have the the top two in each division, and then the next four best D schools will make it based on that uh point system.
- 5:06SPEAKER_01: And then the eight man, the top four make it, and uh four um four and one, three and two play each other at a neutral site in the semis, and then the winner will play at that neutral site championship with the other classes.
- 5:24SPEAKER_01: So uh that's the breakdown of the playoffs.
- 5:27SPEAKER_00: Okay, so that kind of sums up uh section four uh football.
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: Now that this is kind of a state thing, but will there be an at-large bid for a section four team this year?
- 5:39SPEAKER_01: I don't believe so.
- 5:42SPEAKER_01: The uh no, it's not our not our at-large year.
- 5:47SPEAKER_01: It's um it goes it'll be in another section, but we haven't haven't seen the uh who gets it this year yet.
- 5:56SPEAKER_00: So it's the old classic, you win, you're in, kind of a uh a playoffs.
- 6:00SPEAKER_00: Correct.
- 6:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no at larges this year.
- 6:03SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 6:04SPEAKER_00: Um anything else that would uh interest our our fans in terms of any uh inside stories, any uh things on your staff or anything like that that uh uh we they'd like to hear about?
- 6:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean section four, we do a nice job.
- 6:21SPEAKER_01: We're one of the few sections that plays in between classes, so we get a lot of matchups uh with our section champs playing each other from the previous year.
- 6:33SPEAKER_01: So I that's just a great opportunity for our our schools to play each other, develop some rivalry matchups.
- 6:43SPEAKER_01: Uh we have you know forks playing Tyoga this year, which they haven't played in a few years, but those that's a that's a good matchup that we like to see on the on the table.
- 6:55SPEAKER_01: We have Forks Main Enwell also playing again this year.
- 6:59SPEAKER_01: Uh, you know, a lot of a lot of great matchups.
- 7:02SPEAKER_01: Uh we have Waverly playing Main Enwell, you know, which was a classic game last year.
- 7:08SPEAKER_01: Um, so you know, and then you got your your standard UE Vestal and all your rivalry games that we we take care of.
- 7:17SPEAKER_01: And um so just looking forward to kicking off the season.
- 7:20SPEAKER_01: This is there's no week zero this year.
- 7:23SPEAKER_01: We're we're week one, which is coming up this week, and everybody's basically playing nine games.
- 7:30SPEAKER_01: Um, and then we're we're lucky enough to host the state semis at Vestal again this year, which will be after Thanksgiving weekend, and then the winner of those games will go to the dome uh in early December.
- 7:44SPEAKER_01: So just look forward to it.
- 7:46SPEAKER_00: I haven't looked at the schedule, but the uh the Hogan Bowl is still going to be played this year, Windsor and Stengel Forks.
- 7:53SPEAKER_01: Yes, so that's on that's on tap uh October 16th weekend.
- 7:58SPEAKER_01: Uh I'm sure they've all got that one circled.
- 8:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah, definitely.
- 8:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you got some relatives playing in that one, right?
- 8:06SPEAKER_01: Yes, my nephew's on the Forks roster.
- 8:09SPEAKER_01: Uh, so he's uh looking forward to watching him play in his senior year too.
- 8:14SPEAKER_00: Nice.
- 8:15SPEAKER_00: Uh now is he gonna follow the traditional path of uh a paskey to um uh colgay?
- 8:22SPEAKER_01: Uh I I I don't know.
- 8:24SPEAKER_01: We'll see what ends up happening.
- 8:26SPEAKER_01: I'm not sure where his interests lie right now.
- 8:29SPEAKER_01: So he's been playing a lot of golf.
- 8:31SPEAKER_01: I know that.
- 8:32SPEAKER_01: So maybe maybe he might switch over to the dark side.
- 8:35SPEAKER_00: So well, he's that's a lifelong sport that you can play as long as you know all your appendages and everything are working okay.
- 8:43SPEAKER_00: But yeah, that's that's that's not a bad thing.
- 8:45SPEAKER_00: And they they make some pretty good money on the tour.
- 8:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 8:49SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 8:50SPEAKER_00: Well, listen, Jeff, I I appreciate you taking uh time out of your busy day.
- 8:54SPEAKER_00: I know you know you're you're an athletic director at Jonathan City, but you're also you know, double duty with the Section Four football coordinator, and you know who knows what else you're probably doing out there as well.
- 9:04SPEAKER_00: So I appreciate you taking the time and being really thorough and and setting our fans up for another successful season in Section Four.
- 9:11SPEAKER_00: Take care.
- 9:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we'll we'll see you out on the turf.
- 9:13SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
- 9:14SPEAKER_01: Appreciate it.
- 9:15SPEAKER_01: Take care.
