Transcript
- 0:03Hey guys, it is May the 16th and I'm with Bill as the freedom of forgiveness, the stone,
- 0:10Ripple One Practical.
- 0:12Forgiveness often begins as a decision before it becomes a feeling.
- 0:16Willingness opens the door even when the heart is not fully ready.
- 0:21Today I will choose to forgive even as my emotions have not pulled us.
- 0:26I will release the need to hold on to the offense or demand repayment.
- 0:31Forgiveness may start small, but it must start.
- 0:35Ripple Two spiritual.
- 0:37As I bring my willingness before the Father, the Holy Spirit does the deeper work within me.
- 0:43Following Christ who forgave even in suffering.
- 0:46I learn that forgiveness is both received and given.
- 0:50Over time, what I felt impossible becomes a source of freedom and of peace.
- 0:55I saw you open your Bible.
- 0:57Where are you open to, buddy?
- 1:00Oh, well, I have different places that I'm looking at here.
- 1:03I'm just in the Gospels, and I will eventually move back into 1 Corinthians.
- 1:12Well, you know, man, and this is new information to me.
- 1:16I know it's not new information to some people.
- 1:19But, you know, in Matthew 6, 14 and 15, I think it's very important right after the Lord's prayer, right?
- 1:28Because the word that says, and I think it should have been added to it, it says,
- 1:32if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.
- 1:39But if you don't forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.
- 1:43And so that, you know, makes me think about page 67 in the big book, right?
- 1:48I thought it was everybody else, and that's as far as I ever got.
- 1:51Yes.
- 1:52But when you come into that flip, right, that on page 67 where it says, you know,
- 1:59same tolerance, patience, and pity, I would give a sick friend, right?
- 2:03Yeah.
- 2:03But wasn't I?
- 2:05Didn't other people?
- 2:06Didn't you?
- 2:07Yeah.
- 2:07Give me tolerance and patience and pity.
- 2:10I did.
- 2:11You said, can I go to a treatment center that has testosterone?
- 2:14And then I hung up the phone.
- 2:17And now we're sitting here two years later.
- 2:20Yeah.
- 2:21And that's a cool thing.
- 2:24I thought so.
- 2:25I thought it was a great move myself.
- 2:27Well, I mean, but like, you know, to think that's how things happen.
- 2:30But for that not to happen, this would never have happened.
- 2:33Right.
- 2:33Absolutely.
- 2:34So that kind of goes back to what we were just talking about, is that humiliation turned into humility, right?
- 2:39Because the things that I think are so bad are the things that actually make my life so good now.
- 2:46And because of that, if I would have wished any of that away, then my life wouldn't be what it is today.
- 2:53So you're into some seven-step stuff, some seven-step prayer, take away my difficulty to stand my way of being useful, right?
- 3:01And so those difficulties or those humiliations are the one things that have made me useful.
- 3:07So the way I'm with you, I approach that.
- 3:10So for me, when I talk about forgiveness from the 12 steps, the place that that starts is absolutely on page 66 and 67.
- 3:22Right?
- 3:23Because the new angle, so the old angle, the old angle that I had was perhaps the world and its people were wrong.
- 3:33Right.
- 3:34And to conclude they were wrong as far as I ever got because they dominated me.
- 3:39And the reason they dominated me is because I demanded that they love, comfort, and understand me.
- 3:46And then later on down the page on 66, it says,
- 3:51we were prepared to look at this from an entirely different angle.
- 3:55And that's where we start to look at the sick man prayer.
- 3:59Bill specifically points out this was our course.
- 4:03And our course is to forgiveness.
- 4:05It's towards forgiveness.
- 4:06And, you know, in the St. Francis prayer, it says, better to forgive than to be forgiven.
- 4:10So what we're talking about there is human forgiveness.
- 4:15And we have a certain amount of ability to do that.
- 4:19But when we take it from the 12 and from the big book.
- 4:23Right.
- 4:23And we move it into the big, big book.
- 4:26Right.
- 4:26Then we're talking about radical forgiveness.
- 4:29But do you not think like, you know, and I've always,
- 4:33because I think when I hear people talk about, you know,
- 4:36I forgive that person, right?
- 4:38Well, that's all in my head.
- 4:39That's not an action.
- 4:41Does that make sense?
- 4:42Like, you know, forgiving, you know, I could sit in my,
- 4:44I could sit in my house and forgive somebody all day long.
- 4:47But for some reason, that resentment's still there.
- 4:52Right.
- 4:52Yeah, sure.
- 4:53I mean, it's happened.
- 4:55It's been true to my life.
- 4:56That's as far as I ever got.
- 4:58What if I pulled hair out of your beard?
- 5:03What do you mean?
- 5:03Well, what if I pulled hairs out of your beard?
- 5:05Then you'd pull hair out of my beard.
- 5:07Oh, you'd be willing to forgive me for that?
- 5:10Well, then I'd have to think about all the times I called you old and not to forget, you know,
- 5:13What if I hit you in the head with something?
- 5:17Then I'd get mad.
- 5:19What if I spit on you?
- 5:20Then I'd get mad.
- 5:21Yeah?
- 5:22What if I hit you with something 700 times on your back?
- 5:26Then I'd get mad 700 times on my back, and then I'd be mad.
- 5:29What do you mean?
- 5:30What if I then gave you a tree to carry?
- 5:35Oh, you're going in that direction, right?
- 5:37What if I gave you a tree to carry?
- 5:39Right.
- 5:40And what if I, when I got to the tree, I nailed you to it?
- 5:44Right.
- 5:47Yeah.
- 5:49And what if I told you that during that whole time,
- 5:54that this is what I was thinking?
- 5:57love is patient
- 6:00love is kind
- 6:02it does not envy
- 6:03it does not boast
- 6:04it is not proud
- 6:06it is not rude
- 6:08it is not self-seeking
- 6:10nor is it not
- 6:11it is not easily angered
- 6:13it keeps no record of wrongs
- 6:16love does not delight in evil
- 6:17but rejoices in the truth
- 6:19and it always protects
- 6:20always trusts
- 6:21always hopes
- 6:22and always perseveres
- 6:24and that's the love
- 6:26Christ had for us. For you.
- 6:28Yeah. And for me. And for me.
- 6:29Yeah. And for her. Absolutely.
- 6:32While he was having hairs from his
- 6:34beard pulled out. Right.
- 6:35While he was having the crown of thorns fashion
- 6:38he shoved on his head.
- 6:39And I don't know if you're familiar with Jeremiah Johnston
- 6:42but he's been on a couple podcasts lately
- 6:44where he has a picture of what the crown of thorns
- 6:46looked like. Yes. And it's not
- 6:48the nice little crown of
- 6:50burrs, briars that you see
- 6:52you know, little wooden crown
- 6:54it was a cap
- 6:57with three-inch thorns in it that they shoved on his head.
- 7:04Yeah.
- 7:05They shoved it on his head, and they hit him 700 times.
- 7:11And the entirety of that time, he took no judgment.
- 7:15He forgave all of them.
- 7:17He said, forgive them for they know not what they do.
- 7:23So, but we're talking about forgiveness also as well, like facing people, right?
- 7:30You know?
- 7:31Yeah.
- 7:31Well, you have to be willing to forgive in order to accept forgiveness.
- 7:34Right.
- 7:35And that's the whole purpose of the 67 and 68, or 66 and 67, is the beginning of forgiveness
- 7:41starts on those two pages.
- 7:43Yeah.
- 7:43For people that are working the 12 steps as a plan, a design for living, that's where
- 7:49that starts.
- 7:51And it only starts there, right?
- 7:53Because it only starts as 83.
- 7:55Right.
- 7:55Yeah, it only starts there.
- 7:57But we have to understand is that, you know, I think for me, like, whenever I think about that, this was our course, what that is, is it's helping us recognize that as in equal measure, I have the same divine spark as you have.
- 8:12And that's the goal of that particular thing, is that I would pray for you.
- 8:17And then I would ask that you get the help that you need and that I get the help that I need or whatever that I show you the patience, pity and tolerance.
- 8:24I would cheerfully grant a sick friend.
- 8:27Right.
- 8:28How this person offended, how can I be helpful, you know?
- 8:33But, you know, man, whenever I think about forgiveness, man, I just go right back to my faith.
- 8:37And I think to myself, when that was happening and he knew me, he knew what we would be doing right here and right now.
- 8:45Right.
- 8:46That's fundamentally, I have no, I know that in my heart.
- 8:54It's not even a belief.
- 8:56It's an absolute, oh, you want to fall back.
- 9:01But fundamentally, I know that that is my truth.
- 9:06And that allows me to have and extend to the best I can a level of forgiveness to people around me.
- 9:16Because I certainly would hope that they would extend some level of forgiveness to me because I'm going to make mistakes.
- 9:25Not very many, but I do make mistakes every now and then.
- 9:31And every now and then I'll even admit to them.
- 9:34But there's a lot of mistakes I make that nobody ever knows about.
- 9:39And they're personal mistakes inside my own head.
- 9:41Maybe I didn't live up to something I needed.
- 9:43And nobody got hurt or nothing wrong, but it was just maybe thoughts.
- 9:47Exactly.
- 9:48Because those thoughts that come up that I'm not in necessarily control of.
- 9:54I think the reading today from Don M. is an absolute masterpiece on exactly what we're talking about.
- 10:03And it talks about the future conversations so they would turn out the way I want.
- 10:10When I relapse into concern with how I sound and whether people are going to love, comfort, and understand me satisfactorily,
- 10:18my relationships jump the track every time.
- 10:22And that's the old angle of approach, is for me to be concerned about whether or not people are going to love, comfort, and understand me.
- 10:33and the new angle of approach is that I try to live by a way where I love, comfort, and understand others.
- 10:40Right, or I like page 104, 105, in the 12 and 12, right, I'll come up that early.
- 10:46We discover that we do receive guidance for our lives just about the extent we stop making demands upon God
- 10:54to give it to us on order in our terms.
- 10:58Almost any experience at AA will tell how his affairs has taken remarkably
- 11:06and unexpected turns for the better as he tried to improve his conscious contact with God.
- 11:13You know, and I've found that to be true in my life, right?
- 11:15You know, it doesn't matter what I do.
- 11:18Like, I could do all the things in the world, but for some reason,
- 11:21when I build this relationship over here and do everything necessary,
- 11:24And for some reason, I think the big book gives me the tools to do that,
- 11:30to sweep away the things that's blocking me in between me and God.
- 11:34And so as I'm doing that, I get a new experience.
- 11:38And that new experience, I kind of like the way it's wrote on page 65.
- 11:44It says, no, that's 66.
- 11:47It says, you know, for the alcoholic whose hope is the maintenance and growth of the spiritual experience.
- 11:55So growing that consistently, and that would go back in the humiliation, humility, right?
- 12:01Am I willing to go get humiliated, you know, by saying, hey, man, I messed up?
- 12:07Because it might not be humiliating to them, but it could be humiliating to me.
- 12:11Especially, I mean, someone of your stature, right?
- 12:14You got some years in the deal.
- 12:16You can't tell, just like you said just a second ago, right?
- 12:19I hardly ever mess up.
- 12:21You know, how cocky, right?
- 12:24How cocky.
- 12:25And so, but when you come down to it, you're like, man, because that's got to be harder then, too, right?
- 12:30And the bar's certainly higher.
- 12:32Yeah, in your mind, isn't it?
- 12:33Yeah.
- 12:33Because look at me.
- 12:35Yeah.
- 12:35And then, like, when I got to go say I did something like this.
- 12:38Yeah.
- 12:39It's like, wow.
- 12:40Yeah, I had to make amends after one business meeting one time because I said I made a comment about the promises.
- 12:46and it didn't, for me, I thought it was funny,
- 12:49but I thought at the backside of it,
- 12:51some of those people were offended by my comment.
- 12:53Yeah.
- 12:54And I went and made personal amends
- 12:56to each one of those people
- 12:57that was in that business meeting.
- 12:59And I did it on the basis
- 13:03because people, because to your point,
- 13:06I do have some time
- 13:08and I have been around a while
- 13:09and people may hear me say something
- 13:14and that may take away from their ability to hear the message.
- 13:17And I have to be very careful,
- 13:19more careful than a guy that's been around six months or a year or five years.
- 13:23My actions and my words have to be consistent with one another.
- 13:28And if they're not, then people will look and go,
- 13:30well, look at this.
- 13:31This is what happens.
- 13:33Right.
- 13:33You know, this is what happens after some period of time.
- 13:36But, yeah, but, I mean, man, again, though,
- 13:39I mean, for me and especially where forgiveness is,
- 13:41I mean, it starts there, like you said,
- 13:44On the 66, and I think it's important to point out that at the end of the fourth column, the very last sentence is,
- 13:56we admitted our wrongs and honestly, and are willing to set these matters straight.
- 14:02So it immediately points us to the eighth step and ninth step, which is the step where we go out to our fellows and try to make things right.
- 14:11And so that's why I understand forgiveness, as we understand it through the 12 steps, to start on these two pages.
- 14:18We're actually a part of the whole inventory.
- 14:21But, you know, I don't even think I can add anything.
- 14:25Unless you got any more.
- 14:27I don't, but I would just encourage people to, when they think about forgiveness,
- 14:31especially people that are pointed in the direction of Christianity to review 1 Corinthians 13, 4 through 7, and 8 through, what, 13.
- 14:49Because here it says, love never fails, right?
- 14:52So I'm going to read this and we'll close.
- 14:54because when we talk about forgiveness
- 14:56and we talk about the forgiveness in Isaiah 53,
- 15:00it says, by his stripes we are forgiven.
- 15:03Right.
- 15:06And for me, when I think about these passages in 1 Corinthians,
- 15:10I find them to be valuable in that the way Christ,
- 15:14the way Christ would view the people that tortured him
- 15:17before they nailed him to the cross.
- 15:20Love is patient.
- 15:21Love is kind.
- 15:22It does not envy.
- 15:23It does not boast. It is not proud. It is not rude. It is not self-seeking. It is not easily angered.
- 15:30It keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil, but rejoices in the truth.
- 15:36It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails,
- 15:42but where there are prophecies, they will cease. Where there are tongues, they will be stilled.
- 15:47Where there is knowledge, it will pass away. For when we know in part, and we prophesize in part,
- 15:53But when perfection comes, the imperfection disappears.
- 15:58When I was a child, I talked like a child.
- 16:00I thought like a child.
- 16:01I reasoned like a child.
- 16:02When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me.
- 16:06Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror.
- 16:10Then we shall see face to face.
- 16:13Now I know in part.
- 16:14And then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.
- 16:19So while Christ was going through those tortures, we were fully known.
- 16:25And now the three remain, faith, hope, and love.
- 16:29But the greatest of these is love.
- 16:31And can you imagine that?
- 16:32No greater love a man has for than to lay down his life for his friends.
- 16:39And that's what Jesus did for us.
- 16:42You know, and that's what everything points to.
- 16:46Choose Jesus.
- 16:48Choose God.
- 16:49You know, resolutely turn my thoughts to someone I can help.
- 16:53That's love.
- 16:54I think when people say choose, though, I think they're using that word synonymously with serve.
- 17:02Because to say I choose God means to say that I serve the Lord.
- 17:06Right.
- 17:07Not that I just make a decision, but that I, by actions.
- 17:10I think in James, I think we said this one, James 1, verse 22 says,
- 17:16don't just do this by my words, but by my actions.
- 17:19But this kind of comes into this word that you hate, man.
- 17:22And I just thought about it, right?
- 17:23Why?
- 17:24Because I hate the word?
- 17:24No.
- 17:25Because so if I stay consistent in this kind of golden key, right?
- 17:30Direct my thoughts to God.
- 17:31Direct my thoughts to God.
- 17:33You know, and through any of, you know, quit trying to meddle in it.
- 17:36Right.
- 17:37But can I stay?
- 17:38Can I stay in that constant thought of God?
- 17:41Or am I going to drift off and say, oh, you know, I will guide it.
- 17:44You know, God, can you make it work out this way for me?
- 17:46Because I really like this way.
- 17:47And you know what I mean?
- 17:48Because that's what I do sometimes.
- 17:51Just like I read in the 12 and 12, you know,
- 17:54I got to quit letting, trying to demand of God and let God just do.
- 17:58And that is almost in a place of abandoning myself to God.
- 18:04Or you could go with another word, but, you know, we'll just use it as abandon.
- 18:08Right.
- 18:09And that's, you know, that's one of the requirements on page 164, right?
- 18:13Yeah.
- 18:14To abandon myself to God to be a part of the fellowship as a spirit.
- 18:16Am I willing to do that?
- 18:18in a complete view.
- 18:19And I think that's a battle every day.
- 18:21Yes.
- 18:23Yes, I agree.
- 18:25For God so loved the world
- 18:26that He gave His only begotten Son,
- 18:29that whoever believes in Him
- 18:31shall not perish,
- 18:32but shall have eternal life.
- 18:34So if you've heard nothing tonight
- 18:35or this morning,
- 18:36I think it's still morning,
- 18:37yep,
- 18:38if you've heard nothing this morning
- 18:40through our conversation,
- 18:41just know that Jesus loves you
- 18:43and He always has.
- 18:44Amen.
- 18:45Prayer.
- 18:46Give me the willingness to forgive.
- 18:49Through Your Spirit, soften my heart
- 18:51and lead me in the [forgiving] way of Your Son.
- 18:54Amen.
- 18:54Amen.
- 18:59We're going to close on that.
- 19:01We were going to close on that.
- 19:02Yeah, but then you want to say,
- 19:03now I'm going to have to say something after you.
