- 0:08Speaker 1: This is a dangerous game. Buckshow Walter joining us right now?
- 0:11Speaker 1: And Buck, I'm going to throw a curveball at you
- 0:13Speaker 1: to start. Where would you like to start today? We
- 0:15Speaker 1: have plenty of things we want to ask you about,
- 0:17Speaker 1: but like, what would you like to start with? That's
- 0:19Speaker 1: really either grinding your gears or standing out over the
- 0:21Speaker 1: past week.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Probably the promo there. I haven't been in a sports
- 0:27Speaker 2: car in years. I can't get in and out of them,
- 0:29Speaker 2: but the game's great. Okay, here's my thought. Why are
- 0:35Speaker 2: there no more longer levers anymore? Where? That's your job.
- 0:38Speaker 2: Your job is to be the longer lever. You know,
- 0:41Speaker 2: we used to go, Okay, this guy's this, but he's
- 0:43Speaker 2: a good long TJ. McFarland might have been the best
- 0:46Speaker 2: longer liver I ever had all those years in Baltimore.
- 0:48Speaker 2: He saved our pitching staff. I don't think they grasp
- 0:52Speaker 2: how important those guys are. They don't come in and
- 0:54Speaker 2: pitch shut out innings, but they keep the game engaged.
- 0:57Speaker 2: They give you three or four innings, and two days
- 0:59Speaker 2: later they can do it again. And by God, don't
- 1:02Speaker 2: send them down after they have him out him. That's
- 1:07Speaker 2: my little thing today.
- 1:08Speaker 3: What do you guys think, no, no, no, buck, You
- 1:11Speaker 3: got to send them down. You got to send them
- 1:13Speaker 3: down because they have a fresh arm and triple a buck. Buck.
- 1:16Speaker 3: How many times at the end of your the last
- 1:18Speaker 3: few years of your coaching did you have to fight
- 1:21Speaker 3: for a guy who just went out there because it
- 1:23Speaker 3: just happened in the Red Sox game, young man made
- 1:25Speaker 3: a made his big lead debut through. I think there's
- 1:29Speaker 3: three and a third innings against the Yankees in the
- 1:32Speaker 3: Boston Red Sox Yankees series, and most likely they're going
- 1:36Speaker 3: to send him down because he's not available today. How
- 1:39Speaker 3: many times did you have to argue about that when
- 1:41Speaker 3: towards the end of your managing last week?
- 1:44Speaker 2: A lot more later on, But you know, you want
- 1:47Speaker 2: to lose a bullpen or a clubhouse somewhat. You know,
- 1:50Speaker 2: this guy comes in, does the job. The starting pitcher
- 1:52Speaker 2: feels awful, you know, and it's just so the last
- 1:57Speaker 2: thing you want to do is send someone down because
- 1:59Speaker 2: they did their job. You know, I could, I could
- 2:02Speaker 2: live with it if there was a set date to
- 2:04Speaker 2: come back, so to speak. But you know it's just
- 2:07Speaker 2: not fair and the clubhouse knows it. So wait a minute,
- 2:10Speaker 2: we do our job, and this and that whatever, and
- 2:13Speaker 2: we get sent back down. Believe the pitchers are ready
- 2:16Speaker 2: to post up to save this guy from getting sent down.
- 2:19Speaker 2: So now I understand this is with eleven twelve man
- 2:21Speaker 2: pissing staff. Now these guys are third. I don't know
- 2:24Speaker 2: how you have to send guys down with a thirteen
- 2:26Speaker 2: man pitching staff. Of course, with the Dodgers case, fourteen pitchers.
- 2:30Speaker 2: Don't get me started on that one.
- 2:33Speaker 4: Well should we get you started on that one? Because
- 2:35Speaker 4: I have a couple of questions for you, but allow
- 2:37Speaker 4: you to kind of respond to that before I ask
- 2:39Speaker 4: a question.
- 2:40Speaker 2: Well, I just I don't think you know. The bottom
- 2:43Speaker 2: line is I used to tell umpires, which would always
- 2:45Speaker 2: I go, wait a minute. What she just did was
- 2:47Speaker 2: not fair. What you just did, what the call you
- 2:50Speaker 2: just made was not fair. Whether it be you know,
- 2:54Speaker 2: personally vindicted at a player that's the one that used
- 2:56Speaker 2: to drive me crazy, or just being bad. But I
- 3:01Speaker 2: just I can't understand how it's fair for a team. Yeah,
- 3:05Speaker 2: he's an unbelievable player. You want to do everything possible
- 3:08Speaker 2: for us to maybe obviously a generational player, maybe might
- 3:11Speaker 2: you go down? Is one of the greatest players ever
- 3:14Speaker 2: but I mean if I was a Podras or somebody
- 3:16Speaker 2: in that division especially and they're able to operate with
- 3:20Speaker 2: a little different numbers, I don't get it. You know
- 3:24Speaker 2: you knew this when you signed him. So I'm trying
- 3:27Speaker 2: to figure out what is the argument for it that
- 3:30Speaker 2: it's okay, what do you get what do you guys hear.
- 3:35Speaker 3: I don't hear anything. I don't hear anything that that
- 3:37Speaker 3: the argument's okay. Dave Robertson is the only one that's like,
- 3:41Speaker 3: it's totally fine. Anybody, anybody could have signed him, but
- 3:45Speaker 3: like that's that's his beauty and not everybody could have
- 3:48Speaker 3: signed him. I get that, but like I to me,
- 3:51Speaker 3: I think my question yesterday Aaron Boone was because I
- 3:55Speaker 3: had made a comment the day before. I think this
- 3:58Speaker 3: is how twenty nine other managers feel. What Craig Council said,
- 4:02Speaker 3: it's just one of those Daniel Murphy just said, kind
- 4:06Speaker 3: of a Nana Andanty poopoo kind of moment that that
- 4:10Speaker 3: Dave Robertson's like, well, you don't have them, so wear it.
- 4:14Speaker 2: Well. If you think the Pittsburgh Pars have the same
- 4:16Speaker 2: chance to sign Otani, they can actually give him less
- 4:19Speaker 2: money because the money he's gonna make off the field
- 4:22Speaker 2: in Los Angeles. You know, that's one thing with the
- 4:24Speaker 2: basic agreement coming up, We've got to figure out some
- 4:26Speaker 2: way that everybody has the same shot as some of
- 4:29Speaker 2: these international players. And it's not a level playing field.
- 4:34Speaker 2: And every organization does not have a chance to sign Otani.
- 4:38Speaker 2: They do if you want a way way overpay, but
- 4:42Speaker 2: I don't think they're gonna they would ever be able
- 4:43Speaker 2: to match what Los Angeles can offer him. And God
- 4:45Speaker 2: bless him. The only people you know, maybe the Angels
- 4:48Speaker 2: could have but unbelievable player. Love to watch him play
- 4:52Speaker 2: makes the game better. But do we need to tilt
- 4:55Speaker 2: the field because they have him. It's kind of already
- 4:58Speaker 2: tilted enough as it is, Buck Is.
- 5:01Speaker 4: There's still a place in the game for a manager
- 5:04Speaker 4: to pull a player mid game for maybe not hustling
- 5:08Speaker 4: down the line or doing something on the field that's
- 5:12Speaker 4: really not physical, but you know, you lack of effort,
- 5:15Speaker 4: lack a huffle, something like that, and does.
- 5:16Speaker 2: It work well. You two guys don't have to ever
- 5:19Speaker 2: worry about this. You know, you never you played the game,
- 5:22Speaker 2: you know, with an energy, and it was it was
- 5:24Speaker 2: part of the job description. I kind of chuck when
- 5:26Speaker 2: I hear somebody say, well, we're playing hard, We're still hey,
- 5:30Speaker 2: it's the job description, no kidding. You know where did
- 5:34Speaker 2: that become above and beyond the call of duty? But
- 5:38Speaker 2: you know, there's there's a lot of different ways to
- 5:40Speaker 2: look at it. Your players have to know that it's
- 5:43Speaker 2: going to be taken care of someone they know. I mean,
- 5:46Speaker 2: you have moments as a manager where eyes are on
- 5:49Speaker 2: you and you know they're wonting to see the reaction
- 5:51Speaker 2: you have. There's something that's happened on the field, and
- 5:55Speaker 2: they have to know that well by he's going to
- 5:58Speaker 2: be behind closed doors and so of this game. And
- 6:00Speaker 2: sometimes you know, you say, listen, if you're embarrassing our
- 6:03Speaker 2: club and the rest of your team, then you know
- 6:05Speaker 2: it's open field on you. But you're not vin Dick
- 6:08Speaker 2: given me and you try to go, okay, what's causing this?
- 6:10Speaker 2: Like Paul O'Neil. For years, Paul would peel out halfway
- 6:14Speaker 2: down the line, and because he was so embarrassed because
- 6:16Speaker 2: he was so driven to be good and perfect every time.
- 6:20Speaker 2: But you got to take it, not necessarily at face
- 6:23Speaker 2: dayue you got to step back as a manager and go, Okay,
- 6:25Speaker 2: what's reality here and what is somebody trying to throw
- 6:29Speaker 2: it in your face that I don't have to play
- 6:31Speaker 2: hard or run hard. You know, there's guys you could bud,
- 6:34Speaker 2: guys both know you're out easily, and there's a kind
- 6:37Speaker 2: of I used to tell them about not fake running,
- 6:39Speaker 2: but hey, give me an effort. I'm not talking about
- 6:42Speaker 2: your best bolt, but I used to call it cover
- 6:44Speaker 2: your ass to play the game this way and just
- 6:48Speaker 2: cove yourself. Make sure that's not one of the things
- 6:50Speaker 2: that they can get on you about. And hey, if
- 6:52Speaker 2: you've talked to him, and you talked to him and
- 6:54Speaker 2: it still continues, I would rather eliminate that player from
- 6:58Speaker 2: the roster as opposed to creating a firestorm for the
- 7:01Speaker 2: other twenty five players, because the first thing I gonna
- 7:04Speaker 2: do is they're gonna come ask Eric, or they're gonna
- 7:06Speaker 2: come ask you know you guys, Kevin, Hey, what do
- 7:09Speaker 2: you think about the manager? And now you've got a
- 7:11Speaker 2: problem for the players. You know they don't want to
- 7:13Speaker 2: have to deal with that, so you got to handle it.
- 7:16Speaker 3: All right, Let's go to one of the hottest teams
- 7:18Speaker 3: in the game right now. They won last night the
- 7:21Speaker 3: New York Mets. They're one to zero. Do you see
- 7:23Speaker 3: the glass half full or do you see it half empty?
- 7:28Speaker 3: And if it's half empty, do they what is it
- 7:32Speaker 3: that they need to solidify to continue moving in the
- 7:36Speaker 3: right direction.
- 7:38Speaker 2: Well, you've heard me say before. Nobody's as bad as
- 7:41Speaker 2: the game makes you think you are, and nobody's as
- 7:43Speaker 2: good as a game. Sometimes sometimes a ball looks like
- 7:46Speaker 2: a watermelon, and sometimes it looks like a little golf ball.
- 7:50Speaker 2: And the game gets sped up sometime and the game
- 7:53Speaker 2: gets slowed down. But they're better than this. We all
- 7:56Speaker 2: know that. And I'm a firm believer guys that you
- 7:59Speaker 2: seek your level, whatever it is. There's too many games
- 8:02Speaker 2: being played. If you have a strength, it'll show up.
- 8:05Speaker 2: If you have a weakness, it'll show up. And the
- 8:08Speaker 2: challenge is to keep a grip on reality. Why those
- 8:11Speaker 2: around you are saying the sky is falling. You know,
- 8:14Speaker 2: I've said, well, nobody's been in the playoffs after losing
- 8:16Speaker 2: twelve games. Well let's be the first. Let's be the first. Hey,
- 8:20Speaker 2: two weeks from now, especially where they are in their schedule,
- 8:22Speaker 2: you could be talking about the go go Mets. I mean,
- 8:26Speaker 2: it's quick they're talented. They have some pitching depth that
- 8:30Speaker 2: will it will show up if they stay healthy. That's
- 8:32Speaker 2: a big, big prerequisite whether you can keep the people
- 8:36Speaker 2: you're counting on the field. But now I still think
- 8:40Speaker 2: that they're going to seek their level and play better
- 8:43Speaker 2: on the scoreboard. You know, it's got to be about
- 8:45Speaker 2: the game. The scoreboard tells you how to play the game,
- 8:48Speaker 2: and nobody's got to tell you how you're doing. The
- 8:50Speaker 2: standings tell you every day.
- 8:54Speaker 4: Hey, so I just got back from covering the Blue
- 8:57Speaker 4: Jays Angels game and back to back games. The Angels
- 9:00Speaker 4: outfielder through to the wrong base which led to two
- 9:03Speaker 4: runs on the same play. Who's the blame for that?
- 9:07Speaker 2: You know? Sonny Brady Anderson, their hitting coats, text me
- 9:10Speaker 2: the other night and he actually sent me one of
- 9:12Speaker 2: the plays and said, what should you have done here?
- 9:15Speaker 2: And I'm not sure which play you're talking about?
- 9:17Speaker 4: Yeah, which one are you talking about? Because I saw
- 9:19Speaker 4: both plays and was it the Uh?
- 9:22Speaker 2: The guy was playing up the middle and the ball
- 9:24Speaker 2: was back inside on the short stop, went into lost center.
- 9:27Speaker 2: The guy ended up scoring. You know. Uh, that was
- 9:30Speaker 2: a unique play. It's not one that you'll practice on
- 9:33Speaker 2: the on the backfield in spring training. But the key
- 9:36Speaker 2: is get the ball out of your hands to a
- 9:39Speaker 2: infielder as quick as possible, to a fielder who can
- 9:43Speaker 2: redirect the ball either way. See there's a possible play
- 9:46Speaker 2: second on that play, but the the you know, the
- 9:50Speaker 2: the advantage. The prerequisite is always a guy going to
- 9:53Speaker 2: the plate, so you always want to be in a
- 9:56Speaker 2: position to not get caught watching the paint drive, which
- 9:59Speaker 2: is what happened. It's a good job by the third
- 10:01Speaker 2: base coach and even better job by the runner by
- 10:04Speaker 2: letting him sending. So you know, the key there is
- 10:07Speaker 2: get the ball out of your hands quickly. You don't
- 10:09Speaker 2: never want an outfielder looking for a cutoff man. You
- 10:12Speaker 2: should know where he's gonna be. But that was a
- 10:15Speaker 2: unique play because and you have to pronounce, you know,
- 10:18Speaker 2: you have to give them some steadfast rules. Hey, get
- 10:22Speaker 2: the ball out of your hand, get it to an
- 10:23Speaker 2: infielder quickly, a guy, and when you're not sure where
- 10:27Speaker 2: to go is a shortstop. Go to a place where
- 10:29Speaker 2: you can redirect the ball either way. And I don't know,
- 10:33Speaker 2: it was a little fuzzy what I was looking at,
- 10:34Speaker 2: but I think I know what you're talking about. What
- 10:36Speaker 2: do you think you played more centerfield than I did.
- 10:39Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean the first play was, like you said,
- 10:41Speaker 4: it was a little fuzzy. Miles Straw was at second base.
- 10:45Speaker 4: The ball was hit to the third base side, he
- 10:47Speaker 4: broke back. He ended up scoring on the play. The
- 10:50Speaker 4: left fielder came and kind of spun. The third baseman
- 10:54Speaker 4: had to hold, who's typically the cutoff man. So I
- 10:57Speaker 4: understand how that play kind of got a little bit messy.
- 10:59Speaker 4: I totally agree with you. As an outfielder, if I'm
- 11:02Speaker 4: a little unsure, I'm getting it to the infielder as
- 11:05Speaker 4: quick as I can getting in his hand. The second
- 11:07Speaker 4: play I was talking about was a ball hit the
- 11:10Speaker 4: right center field runners at first and second. The right
- 11:12Speaker 4: fielder came up and threw it directly to second base.
- 11:15Speaker 4: The short stuff then redirected at home and it was
- 11:18Speaker 4: a bang bang play. He made the assumption that maybe
- 11:21Speaker 4: he had to play at second base as opposed to
- 11:24Speaker 4: it felt like the rule of thumb as an outfielder
- 11:26Speaker 4: was always one base ahead. You know, want to double
- 11:28Speaker 4: that guy at first base is always going to get
- 11:30Speaker 4: the third base, So you're throwing one base ahead. You
- 11:33Speaker 4: know that that's kind of what I saw. I think
- 11:35Speaker 4: he was trying to go for that, getting the guy
- 11:37Speaker 4: at second base when the throw. The priority should be
- 11:40Speaker 4: always trying to stop a run from scoring.
- 11:43Speaker 2: Yeah, where they get in trouble is they get lured
- 11:45Speaker 2: into the play at second base. Hey, this is you know,
- 11:49Speaker 2: they throw the ball to you know, the second base,
- 11:51Speaker 2: not thinking for sure the guy can't scroll on that play.
- 11:54Speaker 2: But you got to keep it ahead of the runner,
- 11:56Speaker 2: like you said. And I think a lot of time
- 12:00Speaker 2: people assume things the rule of thumb is mantled first
- 12:05Speaker 2: extra base hit, sure double, is that the line is
- 12:09Speaker 2: always in a direct line with home plate, you know,
- 12:11Speaker 2: with nobody on this direct line of second or at
- 12:14Speaker 2: the third base Rother But this was a ball that
- 12:17Speaker 2: didn't go all the way through the gap, Kevin.
- 12:19Speaker 4: It was hit off the wall. It was for sure it.
- 12:22Speaker 2: Then you got to be lined up the home plate there. Now,
- 12:25Speaker 2: I know that they probably came off clean and they
- 12:27Speaker 2: might have been a possible play at second. But I'm
- 12:29Speaker 2: not that I'm not that tore up about having two
- 12:32Speaker 2: guys out there. I'm okay with just one guy there.
- 12:35Speaker 2: If one guy's got to hang at second base for
- 12:37Speaker 2: a possible play there because you've never but you do
- 12:40Speaker 2: have to have your head on a swivel as an
- 12:41Speaker 2: infielder and know where the ensuing play is. Rundowns over
- 12:45Speaker 2: the course of the season can make or break yet
- 12:47Speaker 2: I'm not rundowns, but the relays.
- 12:51Speaker 3: All right, Well, now let's get to one of the
- 12:53Speaker 3: teams that you managed. The Yankees are talking about having
- 12:56Speaker 3: an alternate jersey. Do you feel like there is one
- 12:59Speaker 3: organization that doesn't need to have an alternate jersey?
- 13:04Speaker 2: Well, you know you have it in the spring. I remember,
- 13:08Speaker 2: Here's here's what it's about. Money, Eric much money they
- 13:12Speaker 2: are going to make off selling this jersey. It's been
- 13:17Speaker 2: sold as a VP jersey. Now it's a game jersey.
- 13:20Speaker 2: I'm okay with it, Okay, I really am mean, if not,
- 13:23Speaker 2: we've been wearing it forever. It's like, you know, beards
- 13:28Speaker 2: and the mustaches and all the things that it's important
- 13:31Speaker 2: to the players. In this case, it is important to merchandising,
- 13:34Speaker 2: and they're going to be able to how much money
- 13:38Speaker 2: you think they're going to make off selling this jersey?
- 13:41Speaker 3: Oh my god, that's the only reason. That's the only
- 13:44Speaker 3: reason that Major League Baseball or that Nike signed with
- 13:48Speaker 3: Major League Baseball, and they want to sell Dodgers jerseys,
- 13:51Speaker 3: and they want to sell Yankees jerseys because you know,
- 13:53Speaker 3: they're gonna always they don't have anybody's names on them,
- 13:56Speaker 3: so they're gonna get so many, like forever. You're just
- 13:58Speaker 3: gonna sell jersey after after jersey.
- 14:01Speaker 2: All right, here's my pet peeve of spring training. You
- 14:05Speaker 2: go to play the Red Sox and let's tell you're
- 14:07Speaker 2: the Orias and you've got an orange jersey and they
- 14:09Speaker 2: got a red jersey. Or you play somebody and the
- 14:13Speaker 2: Phillies are playing another team that's in red, and they're
- 14:18Speaker 2: both wearing red jerseys. You know this is the big leagues.
- 14:22Speaker 2: Didn't you carry more than one? Both the clubies call
- 14:25Speaker 2: each other and hey, what are you wearing today? The
- 14:26Speaker 2: home team always, hey, we're wearing red. Okay, we'll come
- 14:29Speaker 2: over and gray. I mean, it's somebody's lazy not wanting
- 14:33Speaker 2: to pack the rest of the jerseys. There's no way
- 14:35Speaker 2: in a big league game that both teams should be
- 14:37Speaker 2: wearing the same jerseys. College baseball doesn't do that. I
- 14:41Speaker 2: look at that on TV and I usually can show
- 14:43Speaker 2: you somebody that was a little lazy didn't make the
- 14:46Speaker 2: phone call. What do you guys think?
- 14:50Speaker 1: By the way, well, Buck, I want to go back
- 14:53Speaker 1: to what some of the big boys on the Yank set.
- 14:55Speaker 1: So John Carlow was asked about this, and he was like, yeah,
- 14:59Speaker 1: we can have tradition, but like, can we have you know,
- 15:01Speaker 1: one alter, different look or something fun and we can
- 15:05Speaker 1: still have tradition for basically the rest if you and
- 15:08Speaker 1: I will say, if you look at the tradition meter,
- 15:09Speaker 1: I mean the Yankees are following it to a t
- 15:11Speaker 1: versus many other teams. The one that I thought was money, Buck,
- 15:15Speaker 1: you're gonna love this if you didn't catch it. Did
- 15:17Speaker 1: you see what Judge said? Judges like, yeah, we got
- 15:19Speaker 1: insurance patches on the jerseys. I think we can do
- 15:21Speaker 1: some other things. Now we already broke it. We're good.
- 15:24Speaker 4: Well, it's tradition. Is tradition also broken when you were
- 15:27Speaker 4: like a neon green arm sleeve or a mint arm sleeve,
- 15:30Speaker 4: Like does that kind of break the tradition too?
- 15:33Speaker 3: Or tattoos you you used.
- 15:36Speaker 2: To have to wear a certain sleeve, a certain shoe color.
- 15:40Speaker 2: If you had stripes, you had to be a certain color.
- 15:42Speaker 2: We've lost the uniform police. There is no such thing anymore,
- 15:46Speaker 2: because you know, as soon as you say something, wait
- 15:47Speaker 2: a minute, I am remembering ex so I'm celebrating someday
- 15:52Speaker 2: and you go, oh gosh, I'll keep my mouth shut.
- 15:54Speaker 2: So it ain't worth fighting as a manager. Then I'd
- 15:59Speaker 2: be more entitled, you know, I would want to fight
- 16:03Speaker 2: doing a good cutoff and relay as opposed to worrying
- 16:05Speaker 2: about sleeves and shoes and whatever. I'd rather you play
- 16:08Speaker 2: the game, right. But man, you know, judge, what's he
- 16:12Speaker 2: going to say? What would someone come to him and go, hey,
- 16:14Speaker 2: we're not gonna be able to give you that contract
- 16:16Speaker 2: because we didn't put this insurance form or hospital patch
- 16:20Speaker 2: on your jersey. And by the way, we didn't do
- 16:22Speaker 2: those alternate jerseys, so we're not bringing enough money to
- 16:25Speaker 2: pay you. Guys.
- 16:27Speaker 4: That would change, Bob, give us your thoughts on the
- 16:31Speaker 4: old Tawny rule. You know, great council coming out saying
- 16:34Speaker 4: what he had to say about it. Give us your
- 16:36Speaker 4: thoughts as an opposing manager of someone that has to
- 16:40Speaker 4: potentially play at a disadvantage against the Dodgers.
- 16:43Speaker 2: Well, yeah, first of all, you're a disadvantage when the
- 16:45Speaker 2: game starts they're really good. They you know, they take
- 16:50Speaker 2: advantage of, you know, the rules, and they get good
- 16:53Speaker 2: people that post up they had they choose, they spend
- 16:57Speaker 2: their money wisely, and you know, twenty managers probably agree
- 17:01Speaker 2: with counsel. Okay, And I expect Dave Roberts to not
- 17:05Speaker 2: be to have the opinion he as I would too.
- 17:09Speaker 2: But if you don't think it's if you think it's
- 17:11Speaker 2: a level playing field where the Dodger is concerned, and
- 17:14Speaker 2: you know, I got a bridge you can buy, but
- 17:18Speaker 2: they don't. It is what it is. Everybody throws stones
- 17:24Speaker 2: at people that are successful, you know, it's you know,
- 17:28Speaker 2: I think one of the hardest things to do in
- 17:29Speaker 2: sports is to play a good hand well. And Dave
- 17:32Speaker 2: Roberts plays a good hand well, and Joe Torrey played
- 17:36Speaker 2: a good hand well. Now they'll tell you, you know,
- 17:40Speaker 2: some other guys tell you we'll come over here in
- 17:41Speaker 2: Pittsburgh and a few other places Miami, and you know,
- 17:46Speaker 2: you might be looked at a little differently. But I
- 17:50Speaker 2: don't Just that you can have more pictures than somebody
- 17:53Speaker 2: else on paper doesn't seem fair. You know, I'm sure
- 17:56Speaker 2: there's a lot more to it than that. And I
- 17:59Speaker 2: don't want to do anything that keeps Otani from showing
- 18:02Speaker 2: how great his skills are. But could you imagine back
- 18:05Speaker 2: when it was ten or eleven or twelve pitchers, if
- 18:07Speaker 2: they were trying to do this.
- 18:10Speaker 1: Yeah, well, to me, buck, the argument also of will
- 18:14Speaker 1: get your own Otani? I mean there are none. There
- 18:16Speaker 1: are no tinis, and the rule is not going to
- 18:19Speaker 1: create it. I think that's pretty clear at this point,
- 18:21Speaker 1: don't you.
- 18:22Speaker 2: You know it's funny I lose to japan ALP time
- 18:25Speaker 2: we tried to sign Itchy Row years ago. The dinonbacks
- 18:27Speaker 2: almost got thrown in Jell over there because I got
- 18:30Speaker 2: him to take a picture with a diamondback jersey, and
- 18:32Speaker 2: oh my gosh, you'd think I was trying to steal
- 18:35Speaker 2: the national treasure, which he was. Do you know what
- 18:37Speaker 2: hit me? With him and MONTSOUI were so much better
- 18:40Speaker 2: than everybody else over there. Everybody thought they could get
- 18:43Speaker 2: the third or fourth best player and get a really
- 18:44Speaker 2: good player. There were such a drop off between those
- 18:47Speaker 2: two guys and the next best player, and now that's
- 18:50Speaker 2: not the case. I mean, you see the kid with
- 18:52Speaker 2: the white sox, and you see I was looking at
- 18:55Speaker 2: his stats this morning about what he did in Japan
- 18:58Speaker 2: before he came over, and a lot of people try
- 19:00Speaker 2: to figure out what Japan the level it is compared
- 19:03Speaker 2: to this. The pitching is good over there. I mean,
- 19:05Speaker 2: I'd feel comfortable having a pitching staff full of Japanese pictures.
- 19:08Speaker 2: But you know, I don't know. It's it's an interesting dynamic.
- 19:14Speaker 2: I don't want to do anything that gets in the
- 19:15Speaker 2: way of fans enjoying Otani's unbelievable skills.
- 19:21Speaker 1: So then, in conclusion, if you were in charge, would
- 19:25Speaker 1: you have that rule or not?
- 19:27Speaker 2: No, you would not. There's no whether I'm going to
- 19:31Speaker 2: let one team have more pictures than another one.
- 19:34Speaker 1: What about the end game rule of losing the DH,
- 19:39Speaker 1: because right, Kratz didn't bring us all in for a
- 19:41Speaker 1: Secondkrats didn't burp, just say he would even go way
- 19:44Speaker 1: back to, hey, you take out your pitcher, you lose
- 19:47Speaker 1: the DH.
- 19:48Speaker 3: Yep, that was his. That was his opinion.
- 19:50Speaker 2: Kind of like that rule where you're trying to make
- 19:52Speaker 2: starting pictures hang around more. You want to talk about
- 19:54Speaker 2: longer laevers. You're going to need longer laevers more. I
- 19:58Speaker 2: want that guy you walk in twenty minutes for the
- 20:00Speaker 2: games somebody's sick. You're starting in fifteen minutes. Let me
- 20:03Speaker 2: get my spikes and i'll go. But I'm off. You know,
- 20:05Speaker 2: I like that rule where if you take your starting
- 20:09Speaker 2: pitcher out before x ny that you lose the DH.
- 20:13Speaker 1: You like that, Well, I was talking about he was
- 20:16Speaker 1: talking about Otani, right, Kratz.
- 20:19Speaker 3: Yeah, he was able to stay as the DH. Efter
- 20:22Speaker 3: he comes out. Murph is saying that he shouldn't be
- 20:25Speaker 3: able to stay as the DH. He should go to
- 20:27Speaker 3: play a position or they lose the DH.
- 20:31Speaker 2: Well, you know, it's funny. It's years ago I pitched
- 20:33Speaker 2: Chris Davis in Fenway Park. We run to pitcher fourteen fifteen,
- 20:36Speaker 2: sixteenth in and whatever. But Chris was the DH that day,
- 20:40Speaker 2: and I knew the rule that you could take your
- 20:42Speaker 2: DH and put him in the pitch. Bobby Valentine's with
- 20:45Speaker 2: the Red Sox, and he got all upset about it,
- 20:48Speaker 2: and then he ended up putting his DH in the game.
- 20:50Speaker 2: I'm not sure you could do that in today's game.
- 20:52Speaker 2: Can I take Otani as a DH and put him in.
- 20:55Speaker 2: I always thought they should close him that way. He
- 20:58Speaker 2: could impact your game every day. You know, dahs for
- 21:01Speaker 2: eight innings and comes in and blows them, you know,
- 21:04Speaker 2: pitches the ninth inning and finishes a game. Wonder why
- 21:07Speaker 2: they would? I wonder if they'd ever thought about that.
- 21:09Speaker 4: Well, book, what happens if he's on base in the
- 21:11Speaker 4: eighth inning, he doesn't have time to warm up? Then
- 21:13Speaker 4: what do you do? Do the make a new rule
- 21:16Speaker 4: for that. They get a ghost runner, you get a
- 21:18Speaker 4: free pinch runner. He gets more time to warm up.
- 21:22Speaker 2: Would it be cool? Though? He could impact every game
- 21:24Speaker 2: as a pitcher and a position player, every game he
- 21:28Speaker 2: could come in. I've always wondered. I'm sure they thought
- 21:31Speaker 2: of him, Why they've never thought about him closing?
- 21:34Speaker 4: You know, I think it was I think it was
- 21:36Speaker 4: discussed a little bit during the World Series because he
- 21:39Speaker 4: had pitched in Game five or six, No, he pitched
- 21:44Speaker 4: Game seven. There was a time during that World Series
- 21:47Speaker 4: where they had discussed what the kind of the rules
- 21:50Speaker 4: were if he was dhing, would he be available to
- 21:52Speaker 4: come in and pitch, And the answer was yes. But
- 21:56Speaker 4: then when he removes the game, when he's removed from
- 21:58Speaker 4: the game, he couldn't go back into the DH spot,
- 22:00Speaker 4: So they would have had to pick their situation very Uh,
- 22:04Speaker 4: strategical Yeah, yeah, I mean I think he could. I
- 22:11Speaker 4: think he could, but I think during that time, with
- 22:14Speaker 4: him having no experience in the outfield, they you know,
- 22:17Speaker 4: imagine he comes in in a World Series game, he
- 22:20Speaker 4: blows the save, they have to bring in a new reliever.
- 22:23Speaker 4: Now Otwi's done for the game, right, so I think.
- 22:26Speaker 4: But I think that's what makes him so cool is
- 22:28Speaker 4: like we sit here, we could kind of speculate about
- 22:31Speaker 4: all these different kind of rules and things because he's
- 22:34Speaker 4: the only one who can do it. And if there
- 22:36Speaker 4: was more players that could do it, teams could use
- 22:38Speaker 4: the advantage. And I'm sure there's certain players in organizations,
- 22:42Speaker 4: even on big league rosters, that potentially could probably pitch
- 22:47Speaker 4: a little bit, not to the level of Otani, but
- 22:49Speaker 4: I think there's more teams that need to figure out
- 22:51Speaker 4: a way to kind of use that rule to their advantage.
- 22:53Speaker 4: If you have a guy, you know, a utility guy
- 22:56Speaker 4: on your bench who's got a good arm, if you
- 22:58Speaker 4: could pitch him every once in a while and and
- 23:00Speaker 4: deem him as a pitcher, you know, I think there's
- 23:02Speaker 4: there's ways to bend the rule. And I know, Buck,
- 23:04Speaker 4: you would definitely find a way to utilize that rule
- 23:07Speaker 4: to your team's advantage.
- 23:09Speaker 2: Yeah, it's funny with Chris that day, at a good point,
- 23:11Speaker 2: he's on base, how do you warm him up? Well, yeah, Chris,
- 23:15Speaker 2: we just sit him down a bullpen. I knew he
- 23:17Speaker 2: had pitched at Longview and in junior college a little bit.
- 23:20Speaker 2: Looking at his bio, I knew that, and he had
- 23:22Speaker 2: a big arm, and I just said, without any hey, Chris,
- 23:25Speaker 2: once you head down the bullpen this was Finway Park,
- 23:27Speaker 2: and warm up a little bit. And he kind of
- 23:29Speaker 2: looked at me. Those eyes got big because I didn't
- 23:31Speaker 2: want him to think about it for a long time.
- 23:33Speaker 2: But you know, we had time for him to go
- 23:35Speaker 2: down there and warm up. But you bring up a
- 23:37Speaker 2: good point, how do you warm him up if he's
- 23:38Speaker 2: on deck? I mean on base.
- 23:41Speaker 1: That's a problem, or on deck either one.
- 23:47Speaker 2: You'd run him up to the batting case. Probably that's
- 23:50Speaker 2: what we do with Chris a little bit. But I
- 23:53Speaker 2: was going to ask you, guys, we were talking about
- 23:55Speaker 2: ballparks today, ballparks that fans love that player hate to
- 24:00Speaker 2: go to because of the dugout and the clubhouses, Like,
- 24:04Speaker 2: how dare you say anything about Wrigley Field or Finway Park.
- 24:07Speaker 2: The first thing we always did was look on our
- 24:09Speaker 2: schedule when the forty man roster. Do we go to
- 24:12Speaker 2: Wrigley phil or Finway with a forty man roster expansion?
- 24:15Speaker 2: Oh my god, it's awful. There is no space forty
- 24:21Speaker 2: guys in the clubhouse. I think you had to go
- 24:23Speaker 2: back to dressing at the hotel. Okay, all you young
- 24:25Speaker 2: guys that got called up, you're dressing at the hotel
- 24:27Speaker 2: like college take you.
- 24:31Speaker 4: But do you think we're Do you think that's something
- 24:33Speaker 4: that give your thought on that too, because obviously, you know,
- 24:38Speaker 4: when you were able to bring up forty guys, it
- 24:39Speaker 4: made the game really long. You know, teams were able
- 24:42Speaker 4: to kind of use their bullpen differently, but also gave
- 24:46Speaker 4: guys their opportunity to come up. What's your kind of
- 24:48Speaker 4: thought on that? You know, I think I was a
- 24:51Speaker 4: September call up, you know, my first time around. I
- 24:54Speaker 4: don't know if I get that opportunity with the rules
- 24:56Speaker 4: the way they are now.
- 24:58Speaker 2: Well, I liked it, but I did think it was
- 25:01Speaker 2: it skewed the competition. I know, one year we eliminated Boston,
- 25:05Speaker 2: we played them, we could never have competed them unless
- 25:08Speaker 2: we had thirty seven people. We were changing pictures every
- 25:11Speaker 2: other hitter and it just wasn't pure. I felt bad
- 25:14Speaker 2: about it because we you know, they were better than us.
- 25:17Speaker 2: But with the forty man roster, you can play matchup.
- 25:20Speaker 2: But also it used to be a big deal to
- 25:22Speaker 2: get to look at some of these young players coming up.
- 25:25Speaker 2: And it's going to be interesting with the new basic
- 25:28Speaker 2: agreement coming up. There's a lot of things that they're
- 25:31Speaker 2: going to have to They got a chance to get right,
- 25:34Speaker 2: and I'm gonna be curious to watch how that all goes.
- 25:37Speaker 2: I'm not feeling good about where we're headed with all this,
- 25:42Speaker 2: to be honest with.
- 25:42Speaker 4: You, but buck with that rule do you think it
- 25:44Speaker 4: would be Do you think it would change the game
- 25:47Speaker 4: the integrity of the game. Say you open it up
- 25:50Speaker 4: to forty man guys, do you think you could deem
- 25:52Speaker 4: a roster every single day if you gave you both
- 25:55Speaker 4: had to submit a roster by you know, X before
- 25:59Speaker 4: the game. So if you had a guy who went
- 26:01Speaker 4: out a long reliever like you mentioned TJ McFarlane, he
- 26:04Speaker 4: had to cover some innings for you, you don't have to
- 26:06Speaker 4: send him down. He's just not on that active roster.
- 26:08Speaker 4: That day. You can use the same amount of pitchers,
- 26:11Speaker 4: but you have a bigger pool of guys, maybe just
- 26:14Speaker 4: for this month of September, so you do get an
- 26:16Speaker 4: opportunity to see guys.
- 26:18Speaker 2: Could you imagine what clubs like the Dodgers and maybe
- 26:21Speaker 2: the Inkings whoever, would start doing though with a triple
- 26:23Speaker 2: eighteen in August, Let's start preparing to call up these
- 26:28Speaker 2: six to eight guys aren't really long term prospects, but
- 26:32Speaker 2: can help them win games in September. I think you'd
- 26:35Speaker 2: see people really circumvent the rule and start basically having
- 26:39Speaker 2: a taxi squad as opposed to young players that you're
- 26:42Speaker 2: trying to look at and get a feel for and
- 26:45Speaker 2: give them an opportunity. I think some teams would take
- 26:48Speaker 2: advantage of the rule. I know I would. I'd look
- 26:50Speaker 2: at our triple A club completely different if that was
- 26:53Speaker 2: the case.
- 26:54Speaker 1: Buck, I've got some bad news. I think there's a
- 26:56Speaker 1: bigger issue they're going to be talking about for those talks,
- 27:00Speaker 1: and that's probably going to swallow up anything else from
- 27:04Speaker 1: really getting coverage.
- 27:06Speaker 2: I agree with. I think all this little minute stuff
- 27:09Speaker 2: like clubhouses and batting cages and warning tracks and whatever
- 27:13Speaker 2: is going to go away as long as they can
- 27:15Speaker 2: get the other stuff done. It might be like that.
- 27:21Speaker 4: Yeah, I do, mm hmm. It's taking you have a
- 27:25Speaker 4: problem with it. Would you have a problem with it though,
- 27:27Speaker 4: because it impacts your ability to go out there and argue.
- 27:31Speaker 2: No, you know, I think we've think I guess it's intentional.
- 27:33Speaker 2: They've kind of taken that out of play. I mean,
- 27:36Speaker 2: you have to work at it and get an argument.
- 27:37Speaker 2: They've actually taken away the vindicted mean umpire too. You
- 27:42Speaker 2: can't be you can't bully a young player or something anymore.
- 27:47Speaker 2: And I like that. I like the fact that they've
- 27:49Speaker 2: taken away I remember the crew would call the crew
- 27:52Speaker 2: that you're gonna have the next series, and you'd get
- 27:54Speaker 2: there and go, hey, I heard you gave so and so,
- 27:56Speaker 2: and then stick it to you. I'm telling you it
- 27:58Speaker 2: was tough. And they've eliminated that. They've made it fair.
- 28:02Speaker 2: There's a lot of good things they've done with umpiring.
- 28:04Speaker 2: And yeah, I don't know. I thought some of the
- 28:07Speaker 2: arguments back when I was there the umpire's early on,
- 28:10Speaker 2: the umpires knew it was part of the stick and
- 28:12Speaker 2: they'd give you some leeway, and you knew there was
- 28:14Speaker 2: a line. You didn't cross over and they did their thing,
- 28:17Speaker 2: You did your thing, and you went back in the dugout.
- 28:19Speaker 2: But now it's pretty uh robotic and stiff. You can't
- 28:23Speaker 2: argue that. You can't argue this, and I think the
- 28:25Speaker 2: fans suffer a little bit with that. But even in
- 28:29Speaker 2: the minor leagues, could you they're playing six game series
- 28:31Speaker 2: in the minor leagues, we'd be in a fight by
- 28:33Speaker 2: the fourth game. There's no way we're playing the same
- 28:35Speaker 2: team six times without having an altered date.
- 28:39Speaker 1: Yeah, but buck, that's that's good baseball.
- 28:41Speaker 2: That's fun.
- 28:42Speaker 1: I mean you get a little bit of a you know,
- 28:44Speaker 1: mix up here and there in a minor league game
- 28:46Speaker 1: to living up your week.
- 28:48Speaker 4: It goes a couple buck on travel, you know, no
- 28:51Speaker 4: big deal.
- 28:52Speaker 2: I can't tell you. They have their off day, a
- 28:55Speaker 2: scheduled off day. It's like they you know, these guys.
- 28:58Speaker 2: Today they're saying, we're going to acquire this player because
- 29:00Speaker 2: we have a program we're going to plug in to
- 29:02Speaker 2: make him play play you know, he's not going to
- 29:05Speaker 2: get hurt as much. Well, usually that program entails not
- 29:08Speaker 2: playing as many games. I remember telling Nemo in New York.
- 29:12Speaker 2: I said, Nim you know, you got one thing you're
- 29:14Speaker 2: missing on your resume for somebody to commit to you,
- 29:16Speaker 2: and that's posting up and playing games. And he did.
- 29:19Speaker 2: He posted up and played games and got the contract.
- 29:22Speaker 2: That's the very first thing I look at with player.
- 29:24Speaker 2: If I was looking at you guys bio, which I have,
- 29:27Speaker 2: I would say look at games played before I looked
- 29:29Speaker 2: at anything else, because I don't care what you bring.
- 29:31Speaker 2: If you're not on the field or on the rubber,
- 29:34Speaker 2: it doesn't matter. You got to post up.
- 29:37Speaker 1: Hey, well about that. That's actually my last question. I'm
- 29:40Speaker 1: going to take us back to the Mets conversation. And
- 29:43Speaker 1: I was not a fan of the Nemo Semian trade.
- 29:46Speaker 1: And then you see the Mets go through their losing
- 29:48Speaker 1: sched just now, and you're like, oh, they could really
- 29:50Speaker 1: use a Brandon Nemo in almost every way. I mean,
- 29:52Speaker 1: you manage him, so you can tell this better than
- 29:54Speaker 1: I can. And I don't know if you came across
- 29:56Speaker 1: Semi and much. And this isn't against Semian as much.
- 29:59Speaker 1: It's against the move and how it created half of
- 30:02Speaker 1: the infield to be out of place. You know, for
- 30:04Speaker 1: me heading into the season, they're like, yeah, ideally, Boba.
- 30:06Speaker 1: Schet look pretty smooth at second. I'd put him there.
- 30:09Speaker 1: That's where many teams think he should be long term,
- 30:11Speaker 1: and then Beatty give him a shot to just play
- 30:13Speaker 1: every day third base. You've got Lindord short Once Semion
- 30:16Speaker 1: came aboard and they wanted to get rid of Nemo
- 30:18Speaker 1: so badly, it felt like they really messed up the
- 30:21Speaker 1: flow of the infield. Did you feel that way, Well,
- 30:24Speaker 1: you know.
- 30:25Speaker 2: There's so many things going on there that you don't
- 30:27Speaker 2: know about, but I think a lot of it had
- 30:29Speaker 2: to do with a link of contract. I think I
- 30:32Speaker 2: think Brandon was owed like five years, you have to
- 30:34Speaker 2: correct me, and I think Simmon was three. If nothing else,
- 30:37Speaker 2: your commitment there is completely different, and you saw a
- 30:40Speaker 2: window to get out of that. And you know they're
- 30:43Speaker 2: both good major league players. You know, I know nim Well,
- 30:47Speaker 2: great human being, just a solid teammate impacts a clubhouse,
- 30:53Speaker 2: and not that Marcus doesn't. I'm just saying I can
- 30:55Speaker 2: only speak for one half of it. I'd love to
- 30:57Speaker 2: have Brandon Nimo in my club be He's got a
- 31:00Speaker 2: pure heart, and you know he plays through some stuff too,
- 31:03Speaker 2: And I think they just didn't think that by the
- 31:06Speaker 2: end of that contract, those extra two years. That's what
- 31:09Speaker 2: it looks like from afar. But like I said, I'm
- 31:12Speaker 2: not in the inside stuff. I mean, what do you think.
- 31:17Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean I called it out quite a bit,
- 31:20Speaker 1: and I mean, you hate to do that stuff when
- 31:22Speaker 1: it makes you look good, but you got to call
- 31:24Speaker 1: it out right now. I mean, I know it's only
- 31:26Speaker 1: a month in the season, but he's one of the
- 31:27Speaker 1: best hitters in baseball right now for the.
- 31:29Speaker 4: First That deal two years old too, and we're already
- 31:31Speaker 4: talking about the length of the contract. If you had
- 31:34Speaker 4: a problem with the length of the contract, don't give
- 31:36Speaker 4: him the length of the contract, because you know, it's
- 31:39Speaker 4: not like it's ten years. It's not like it's a
- 31:40Speaker 4: ten year deal. When we were in year six of it,
- 31:42Speaker 4: it was like, you know, that deal was only two
- 31:45Speaker 4: years old. So that's it's a crazy thing to like
- 31:48Speaker 4: it ties me.
- 31:49Speaker 2: It's not the player's fault that you give him this contract.
- 31:52Speaker 2: I mean, why why be mad at them? You know,
- 31:54Speaker 2: if a guy's getting a two billion dollars race and
- 31:56Speaker 2: striking out one hundred and eighty times's who's not smart yet?
- 32:00Speaker 2: The player they're going to chase what you pay them
- 32:02Speaker 2: for Okay, it's not their fault. I never got mad
- 32:05Speaker 2: at the players. I go, gosh, you know we're with
- 32:07Speaker 2: dummy here, not them. And he put up good numbers
- 32:10Speaker 2: last year too. Yeah, you would think like, oh man,
- 32:12Speaker 2: that's it. I mean, if you look back at him.
- 32:17Speaker 2: I talked to the scout that signed him out of
- 32:19Speaker 2: Wyoming High School, think about that. Hey, this is a
- 32:22Speaker 2: guy I think beating the table. I think we should
- 32:24Speaker 2: draft our first pick. I'd go, Okay, give me an
- 32:26Speaker 2: example of somebody with his background that we should believe in.
- 32:30Speaker 2: That's unbelievable for scouting, unbelievable. I think Chad McDonald had
- 32:35Speaker 2: a lot to do with the mess at that time.
- 32:36Speaker 2: I'd ask him, I go, how did you guys have
- 32:38Speaker 2: the guts to make that pick? I don't know if
- 32:40Speaker 2: I could. I don't know if I could. Well, he clearly.
- 32:44Speaker 1: I mean, if your brandon, them are going to stand
- 32:46Speaker 1: out in Wyoming, and not a lot of big league
- 32:49Speaker 1: ball player, all Star caliber players coming out of Wyoming,
- 32:51Speaker 1: so it's hard to compare him to the rest of
- 32:53Speaker 1: the state. But they figured it out.
- 32:55Speaker 2: Buck. You've seen those football teams, the little schools that
- 32:58Speaker 2: can only scrimmage one side of the line at the time. Well,
- 33:02Speaker 2: maybe they could only play one side of the field
- 33:04Speaker 2: at a time. I don't know. I don't know how
- 33:06Speaker 2: they ever got that many kids to play. I don't know.
- 33:10Speaker 1: He might not have had a high school team.
- 33:12Speaker 2: I don't know. There's a whole story today. He did
- 33:14Speaker 2: a lot of showcase, a lot of travel. We've talked
- 33:16Speaker 2: about it and on the plane and different stuff. And
- 33:19Speaker 2: he he's a good human being, good mom and dad, wife,
- 33:24Speaker 2: He's he's he's a good one. He's a you know,
- 33:27Speaker 2: who's a guy like that? A consistent personality because I
- 33:30Speaker 2: love consistent personalities and clubhouses. You never had to ask
- 33:34Speaker 2: what kind of mood Peter Alongso was in. He never
- 33:37Speaker 2: was in a bad mood. Brandon was never in a
- 33:39Speaker 2: bad mood. Yeah. I got a great text from Jeff McNeil.
- 33:43Speaker 2: Jeff's doing well. You know, you got to get those guys.
- 33:45Speaker 2: Thank god, they're not all the same. You know, Lindor's
- 33:48Speaker 2: not McNeil, McNeil's not Soto, SODA's not Lindore. I mean,
- 33:52Speaker 2: can you imagine how bored would be if every personality
- 33:55Speaker 2: was the same.
- 33:56Speaker 1: M hm, oh yeah, I mean, hey, we don't have
- 34:00Speaker 1: Zinski on today. But I mean he was very different
- 34:03Speaker 1: from just about everyone else, and and he had some
- 34:06Speaker 1: winning and you put somehow Persenti and asie Gi in
- 34:08Speaker 1: together and it created winning baseball. So if you can
- 34:11Speaker 1: do that, that should really tell you that. You know,
- 34:13Speaker 1: life is like a box of chocolates, right buck, You know.
- 34:16Speaker 2: What's funny is Aja from Afar. I never heard so
- 34:19Speaker 2: many guys go, oh, this guy can't stand look at
- 34:22Speaker 2: this guy. And I would always go, well, don't look
- 34:24Speaker 2: at him. Don't look at him. You'd like to have
- 34:26Speaker 2: him on our team, though, wouldn't you? Well, yeah I would, Yeah,
- 34:29Speaker 2: I'd like to have him on my team. I always
- 34:31Speaker 2: said I'll take Aj anytime they want to trade with us.
- 34:34Speaker 2: But I used to tell guys, well, don't look at
- 34:37Speaker 2: him if he makes upset. You know, he's wears his
- 34:40Speaker 2: emotions on his sleeve. You never had to worry what
- 34:42Speaker 2: he was thinking because it was right.
- 34:43Speaker 4: I feel like that's like the ultimate almost. I mean,
- 34:47Speaker 4: ninety percent of the time, there's certain guys that you
- 34:49Speaker 4: just don't like because there's certain things. But I feel
- 34:51Speaker 4: like that's the ultimate compliment is when guys on other
- 34:54Speaker 4: teams don't like you, and then you go down the
- 34:57Speaker 4: road and you become teammates with him, You're like, dude,
- 34:59Speaker 4: I was totally wrong about you. I feel like maybe
- 35:01Speaker 4: I had that same feeling about AJ before I started
- 35:05Speaker 4: doing this. You know, AJ ended up being a great
- 35:07Speaker 4: friend to me in this business. So yeah, I think
- 35:11Speaker 4: that's an ultimate compliment when guys hate guys on other teams,
- 35:14Speaker 4: much like Pap. If that's Pap in the background, probably
- 35:17Speaker 4: a guy you didn't like on the other.
- 35:18Speaker 2: Team Mississippi State. I liked him. We both went to
- 35:22Speaker 2: the same college. He's he's in the Ring of Honor.
- 35:25Speaker 2: I think, didn't he Yeah, welcome you know, you can
- 35:29Speaker 2: welcome me in to the Ring of honor. No, Pap
- 35:33Speaker 2: was one of those guys. I'd take him anytime he
- 35:35Speaker 2: wanted to come play for us. But you know I
- 35:37Speaker 2: heard no expression always kept in mind dumb player. Dumb
- 35:40Speaker 2: players get you fired. Billy Martin told me at all
- 35:43Speaker 2: time he goes a tie breaker, dumb players will get
- 35:46Speaker 2: you fired. Is that whole expression? You can't fix stupid,
- 35:49Speaker 2: You can't fix stupid.
- 35:52Speaker 1: Last thing is just going back to what you were saying
- 35:54Speaker 1: before with AJ. Hey, some I know some players that
- 35:57Speaker 1: are really bothered by Wilson contraras as a fan, and
- 36:00Speaker 1: it's fun to watch. He can spice up a game
- 36:02Speaker 1: in mid April, mid May. And also he's the top
- 36:05Speaker 1: three hitter on the Red Sox right now, and he's
- 36:08Speaker 1: a good first baseman. Dude, you gets a good player.
- 36:11Speaker 2: The only problem I ever had was when some antics
- 36:14Speaker 2: are action by players put their teammates and arms away.
- 36:18Speaker 2: I remember talking to Manny one time, so man he
- 36:20Speaker 2: will back you anytime, every time. But there's nothing worse
- 36:23Speaker 2: for a player to be on the field with an
- 36:26Speaker 2: unjust cause. That drives guys crazy. When I'm out here,
- 36:30Speaker 2: know one that my teammate was wrong. You don't want
- 36:33Speaker 2: to do that consistently. I said, make sure you have
- 36:35Speaker 2: a just cause before you get involved in an altercation,
- 36:40Speaker 2: and that's what would drive you crazy.
- 36:43Speaker 1: Well, Buck, this was good. I hope this just felt
- 36:46Speaker 1: like a casual conversation. There are, you know, thousands watching
- 36:49Speaker 1: all over the place, so that's what we try and
- 36:51Speaker 1: do here, just hang out for a little bit.
- 36:53Speaker 2: You got Pap next, Pat Bond.
- 36:55Speaker 1: He's yeah, he's literally he just ready.
- 36:59Speaker 2: I mean, you guys had been to Starkville Mississippi. I
- 37:03Speaker 2: didn't think so you gotta go.
- 37:05Speaker 4: I wasn't good enough. I wasn't good enough in my
- 37:06Speaker 4: collegiate career day to to to go play there.
- 37:09Speaker 2: Yes you were. I was the first team.
- 37:13Speaker 4: Pardon I was not.
- 37:16Speaker 2: They don't they call it stark Vegas for a reason.
- 37:19Speaker 2: To ask you good good seeing you guys. We'll at him,
- 37:22Speaker 2: look at him, thank you about You're the best care
