- 0:27Welcome to the Pop Culture Junkie podcast. I'm Olivia and I'm here with.
- 0:31Hi, I'm Shauna.
- 0:32And we are sadly not together this time looking longingly into each other's eyes.
- 0:38No, I miss you.
- 0:40We're back to an internet relationship.
- 0:43You know, it feels wrong.
- 0:44And then I asked Olivia, hey, what's next time you're going to kind of Phoenix and you can go swimming in my pool.
- 0:50We can hang out. You live in Phoenix. It's going to be like I'm 150, Sean. I'm not fucking coming day or is on it any time in the next five month.
- 1:00To be fair, if you were paying the rent prices I was paying, you would be like, I agree with that line of thought.
- 1:08I bet so much in red I could never leave my apartment ever.
- 1:13No, it's like if I'm in a pay to have really nice weather, I'm not going to go home during the worst weather.
- 1:22No, that makes it. That makes it. I just need to come and visit you then.
- 1:26Oh, what a what a peril twist my arm.
- 1:32You should come in Justin CK come to say coming to San Francisco.
- 1:37Yeah, because CK's team is based here.
- 1:40The last whole story tell me anything. Well, she just told me so I put me out on the odd guys.
- 1:46Just you better pets me right after you listen to this episode.
- 1:50Or else or else friendship over.
- 1:56Yes. So what have you been up to?
- 2:00I'm sorry. I left you other than crying.
- 2:03Oh, I baked fine deplace since I left you. Not just about it. I'm just crying and masturbating and being.
- 2:11It always has to go there.
- 2:14It doesn't. Oh my god. If anyone is closeting and I sound little stuffy it's because I am.
- 2:18But you know what? I'm a big girl and I'm going to work my way through it.
- 2:22The fans need a recording. So here we are.
- 2:25Yeah, that's dedication.
- 2:27As such, I got podcasted. Oh my god. I went to San Diego and I stayed in a festival for the first time ever.
- 2:35And it was how is that sure?
- 2:38I don't know if I would ever do it again.
- 2:42But I'm glad that I did it and then I could cross it off my list.
- 2:46My two little roommates were so fun.
- 2:49One girl was like 22 and was in San Diego traveling for the first time by herself to a music
- 2:57festival. And the other lady was from Brazil and was hitting up the gay clubs every night.
- 3:03And they were both delightful. So I loved them.
- 3:06But I was also in downtown San Diego next to the bike clubs and all night.
- 3:10It was like, it's all my ladies. Where'd you go?
- 3:13And it was very loud and I was thankful for my ear plug.
- 3:19But no murders in my hostel, which I guess was cool, but like,
- 3:25that's how, whether it's murder or nothing happened.
- 3:28Rude. Rude of them.
- 3:31I've never stayed in a hostel either.
- 3:33I might change my mindset if I were like traveling abroad.
- 3:37But yeah, I feel like my time to stay in a hostel was under 30.
- 3:43I 36 and I stayed in a hostel to save money.
- 3:46Yeah, I think you could still do it too.
- 3:48I think at this age, I'm just not meant to live in a comfortable lab.
- 3:54I love that. I did have that realization where I was like,
- 3:59I am accustomed to certain luxuries, like a full bed and a room to myself.
- 4:05It was all size bad. That was nice.
- 4:07And I had a little curtain.
- 4:08You'll appreciate this. When I first showed up, I knew it was going to be bunk beds.
- 4:13I was prepared to ask them for a bottom bunk.
- 4:17But when I got in, they really go, get your aside, bunk bed on the left, bottom.
- 4:23Oh god. No more top bunk for me ever.
- 4:26Yes, if you get PTSD, like climbing off of it.
- 4:32I know I saw the ladder and I was like, not today.
- 4:35Safety. My bones are going to be intact.
- 4:38Let me stop here to witness the weeping.
- 4:40Literally dying dog sounds.
- 4:44I'm happy to realize it was just your foot and not a dying dog.
- 4:48Oh my god, I would break every bone in my body,
- 4:51rather than be in a room with a dying dog.
- 4:53Yeah. 10 out of 10.
- 4:55Okay. 10 out of 10 agree.
- 4:57Well, speaking of death,
- 5:00God, please.
- 5:01Please, but no.
- 5:02I'm like, "Sickie's fine.
- 5:03I know my god."
- 5:04Ziggy's doing amazing.
- 5:06I went to a big house.
- 5:07I went on a little day trip on Saturday.
- 5:12I went to Marshall, California,
- 5:14which is like where all of the oyster farms are in the Bay Area,
- 5:20which I freaking love an oyster so much.
- 5:23So it was great, but we went the coastal route to get there
- 5:28and stopped and we were on the coast,
- 5:31like looking at the rocks.
- 5:33This is very like big little lies.
- 5:35I wasn't wearing a card again, unfortunately,
- 5:37so I could channel Nicole Kidbin in the moment.
- 5:40Yeah, I know.
- 5:42I wanted, I needed like a really big one.
- 5:44It was like a full wrap, like teacher wrap almost.
- 5:48I needed that.
- 5:49But I'm going tomorrow.
- 5:52I'm going to Tiburon,
- 5:53which is I'm taking the ferry there.
- 5:56And I'm going to have caviar and champagne in this.
- 5:59It's amazing.
- 6:01It's amazing.
- 6:01Fun without me.
- 6:03I think you say after you just went on multiple trips.
- 6:07I know.
- 6:08But it makes champagne.
- 6:10Yeah, people, you don't need champagne.
- 6:13You should have pain and drink caviar.
- 6:15Yeah, so I'm just
- 6:19excited about that.
- 6:20That sounds very cool.
- 6:22And then I'm also going to be channeling
- 6:24my inner season one of the OC.
- 6:28I'm going to an ocean bonfire on Sunday
- 6:32on Ocean Beach.
- 6:33No, I've bought a love of good Oshi.
- 6:37It's going to be cold.
- 6:39Yeah, are you going to push some on the face?
- 6:42Sing, look up to the OC bitch.
- 6:44Except for maybe I'm from Cisco bitch.
- 6:48It's Ocean Beach.
- 6:50So maybe welcome to the OB bitch.
- 6:52But yeah, so I've quite a little lovely Memorial Day weekend planned.
- 6:59I was violently hung over.
- 7:01I have a three day hangover this week.
- 7:04So I was like, okay, I need something that isn't going to be going
- 7:08absolutely feral or feral.
- 7:10You're going to get drunk.
- 7:11I probably, but like I was bad.
- 7:14I know.
- 7:16You were responding to my text.
- 7:18Nice and her one and I was like, you hate me.
- 7:20It's fine.
- 7:20Don't worry about it.
- 7:21She's like, I'm so sorry.
- 7:23I've just been vomiting.
- 7:24On the third day, I woke up and threw up.
- 7:28And I hadn't thrown up the entire three days.
- 7:31And I was like, how did that just even happen?
- 7:33Yeah, it wasn't very fun.
- 7:35I'm spelling the demons from your body.
- 7:37Don't drink too much.
- 7:39Listen or eat bad.
- 7:40You.
- 7:41Especially if you're over the age of 30, it hurts too bad.
- 7:45It hurts too bad.
- 7:47You bet.
- 7:48I know I'm doing self-ripper tubing on Saturday and I'm kind of never
- 7:51bad.
- 7:51Oh, you're going to get so burned.
- 7:53Last time I did really good because I just mothered myself inside of
- 7:57the screen.
- 7:58But well, if you're not from Arizona, you can get
- 8:02literal second and third degree burns if you're not careful
- 8:07on this river flow because it's so incredibly hot.
- 8:10It's so hot.
- 8:11It's crazy.
- 8:11But you get to see like wild horses runs with a river.
- 8:15And then you get to see a lot of drunk like
- 8:17fat boy is like, yeah, it's got
- 8:21a little.
- 8:22So it's like the juxtaposition of nature.
- 8:24It's mature.
- 8:26And yeah, there you go.
- 8:28I might be a buffy prom.
- 8:29All right, we should probably do our podcast because I know you would have to
- 8:32catch up for after a bun.
- 8:34Just.
- 8:34You get me.
- 8:35So we are most
- 8:39awaited film this year.
- 8:43I think between the two of us, we've even talked about flying to each other to see
- 8:46this movie.
- 8:47And maybe we'll circle back on those plans.
- 8:49Is the 28 years later.
- 8:53Busy.
- 8:53And this is later.
- 8:55Out.
- 8:55What did I say?
- 8:5620 years later.
- 8:57At Booty years.
- 8:59Really.
- 9:00They are.
- 9:00SpongeBob and zombies combined.
- 9:03Amazing.
- 9:04So 28 years later comes out.
- 9:08A June 20th in theaters. And we've been so excited about it.
- 9:12If you listen to our, what are we excited about at the top of this year?
- 9:16This was on both of our lists really, really high.
- 9:19And I think that we both have such a deep love for the 28 days universe.
- 9:25I don't know what to call it.
- 9:26I almost called it the 28 universe, but that feels wrong.
- 9:29That's 20.
- 9:30The 28 calendar.
- 9:32For many times, it's broken that Sandra Bullock, a movie where she's in rehab for 20 days.
- 9:38It was.
- 9:38I don't know if I've seen that.
- 9:40Oh God.
- 9:40I don't know.
- 9:4228 days later.
- 9:43That one's called 28 days.
- 9:45Oh, okay.
- 9:46There we go.
- 9:47For this missing bullet.
- 9:48That's what they do.
- 9:48Sandees in the apocalypse.
- 9:52It's the shit that's been she's been in rehab.
- 9:55It's fine.
- 9:55So we're going to take a quick break and then we're going to hop into the lower.
- 10:07So as I mentioned at the beginning of this episode, we're both obsessed with 28 days and 28 weeks later.
- 10:14I think I've long said 28 days and 28 weeks is a really good example of where a sequel is actually
- 10:23better than the original one in my opinion, controversial.
- 10:27I know, but I really wanted to dive into the impact that this movie had on zombie horror in general.
- 10:37And really just the things that we need to remember as we head into the 28 years movie.
- 10:42So Sean, tell me the first time you ever saw this movie.
- 10:45Oh my God.
- 10:46Okay.
- 10:4728 days later, I think I saw for the first time in all of it.
- 10:52I guess it must have been with my ex boyfriend.
- 10:56Yeah.
- 10:56And I had only seen really bits and pieces of it over and over and over again.
- 11:03That makes up the entire movie.
- 11:06And then I know isn't that crazy.
- 11:09And then I'd seen the second one multiple times.
- 11:11But the first one I'd only seen in shocks.
- 11:13Wow.
- 11:15Yeah.
- 11:16And then it's so hard to find it streaming anywhere until recently.
- 11:21I've tried to find it and it's an irony for years now online.
- 11:26And it wasn't anywhere until they announced that they were making the third one.
- 11:30And now find the fourth.
- 11:32Fine.
- 11:32So you can even rent it or just wasn't a bill.
- 11:35It wasn't anywhere.
- 11:37Like you couldn't even rent it.
- 11:38And so I rented it last week.
- 11:41It did a rewatch all the way through.
- 11:43And there was a lot that I forgot because I hadn't seen it so long.
- 11:47And then the second one I also watched.
- 11:50I think when it first came out, I was a huge fan of horror movies.
- 11:55When I was a...
- 11:56You were in your Puritan Christian era.
- 11:58Yeah.
- 11:59Honestly, yeah.
- 12:00When I was like a teenager,
- 12:02I was an indoor horror movies and I was very squeamish.
- 12:06And now it got a lot really mixed-by-feeling.
- 12:09Unless it's like,
- 12:11"Warcher born."
- 12:12Like, the hostile movies.
- 12:14Good timing.
- 12:18Good time or like the terrifying movies.
- 12:20I don't suck with those.
- 12:21But every other horror movie I'm fine.
- 12:23And I can, you know, I don't have a week's stomach.
- 12:25So yeah, I was a little late on these.
- 12:27But I love zombie movies.
- 12:29I love the end of the world of apocalypse.
- 12:32I think I've talked about that in the podcast.
- 12:34Or yes, I think that when you look at 28 days later
- 12:38and the kind of series as a whole,
- 12:40it was such a unique film at the time,
- 12:44specifically because a lot of the zombies that we saw
- 12:48at like, pre-this movie were very slow, right?
- 12:52They were dead come to life.
- 12:54Rather than within this movie,
- 12:57it's actually not dead people coming back to life.
- 13:00It is what they call the rage virus.
- 13:04And it's not like your typical zombie.
- 13:07It kills you and then you resurrect like in the walking dead.
- 13:10But actually it's kind of like a form of rabies.
- 13:14Yeah. That happens.
- 13:16And it makes them ultimately like super aggressive.
- 13:19And it's a 22nd infection time, which so crazily.
- 13:26I totally forgot that bit.
- 13:28Like when, okay, I get this goes without saying,
- 13:31but we're going to spoil 28 days later,
- 13:33which in my 20s, 20s, yeah, they came out like 20-some odd years ago.
- 13:37So get over that.
- 13:39But when, gosh, I forgot Frank, I think like the guy
- 13:42that the older man who he's traveling with,
- 13:44when he get that blood drop in his eye.
- 13:46Oh, yes, the crow.
- 13:48Yes, Frank.
- 13:49Frank Brandon Gleason.
- 13:50The worst, just Sarah and Deppinus just lands perfectly
- 13:54in his eyeball right. And immediately he knows he's going to turn.
- 13:59And yeah, he has like 20 to 30 seconds to just basically tell his daughter,
- 14:03"Hey, remember, I love you, honey."
- 14:06And then zombie.
- 14:07And it's like, oh, shit, that was so.
- 14:08Yeah, it's ultimately like really, really crazy.
- 14:11I mean, this movie came out in 2002 when I was rewatching it.
- 14:15I was just thinking about how it's like a British lab in Cambridge
- 14:21where scientists were experimenting with trying to isolate
- 14:25the part of the brain that causes anger
- 14:28and create like a solution to that, like uncontrollable anger.
- 14:32And they ended up pairing this virus with Ebola,
- 14:36like as the carrier for it.
- 14:38And it mutates into these chimpanzees and they go crazy.
- 14:43But then PETA comes in and frees these monkeys.
- 14:46It's such a commentary on life now
- 14:51to be like, oh, they made it in a lab and it ended the world.
- 14:55Yeah, just thought of it as extra relevant
- 14:56to like what we just went through in 2020.
- 14:59It is super relevant.
- 15:00I'm reading a book right now actually
- 15:02kind of about the zombie apocalypse.
- 15:04Okay.
- 15:05It is the gnarse of virus
- 15:10mutated with sexual rage.
- 15:12So it's horny zombies.
- 15:15Yeah, it's a very interesting one.
- 15:18What's the name of it?
- 15:19American Rapture by CJ Lee.
- 15:22And it's from the perspective of a very Catholic 16-year-old girl
- 15:28who is very sheltered her whole life.
- 15:30Oh, yeah, it's fascinating.
- 15:33But it is interesting when you set these zombie films
- 15:35kind of in the reality of what we've dealt with recently, you know.
- 15:40So it's like the Ebola virus.
- 15:42We were all like, oh god, 2002.
- 15:45I want to know from your perspective, do you have a preference
- 15:48when it comes to zombie films?
- 15:50Do you like it more when it's a virus?
- 15:53Or do you like it when the dead come back to life and a thing?
- 15:56Because we've seen a lot of those in popular culture.
- 15:59Yes, I think that virus is more interesting
- 16:04because I do think that it's something that could exist
- 16:08in like real life, or like a virus like wipes out the human population
- 16:13that could totally happen.
- 16:14So I do think that's interesting.
- 16:16One thing when COVID happened, I love all types of infection movies.
- 16:22Like, contagious.
- 16:23I love it.
- 16:24So good.
- 16:24Oh my god.
- 16:25I'm going to watch that.
- 16:27I watched an insane amount of zombie movies,
- 16:30like movies like contagion whenever 2020 happened.
- 16:33So I really do think that that's super interesting.
- 16:37And a lot of the time, like, even if you look at the happenings,
- 16:40like the plants evolving, but like nature fighting back,
- 16:43I think it's such an interesting.
- 16:45The myth seemed to explore the happening, not the myth,
- 16:49but you probably haven't seen that because you know,
- 16:51like I'm not chandelier.
- 16:52Lama, lama.
- 16:53No, I love the myth.
- 16:54No, not the myth, the happening.
- 16:57Oh, the happening is stupid, but I...
- 16:59It's good.
- 17:01That's the Mark Wahlberg one where she's like,
- 17:03you scuffing to my bent rope so you could check out me.
- 17:06So I'm my lemon drink.
- 17:08Yeah.
- 17:08He's like, what?
- 17:10No.
- 17:11Enter that quote, that probably on a weekly basis.
- 17:14What?
- 17:15No.
- 17:16So that is a...
- 17:19I'm not sure I'm allowed to movie the Andrew Watch.
- 17:21How do he hates it?
- 17:23He hates it, but he's seen it.
- 17:25He's seen it and he ate it.
- 17:27And I...
- 17:28Yeah, I think the most important part of why these zombies are so
- 17:31God dang scary is they can run so fast.
- 17:36Like they aren't...
- 17:37Our zombies are terrified.
- 17:39That you're so low, lumbery.
- 17:41I just crawled out from the dead in the grave.
- 17:44And like my arm is falling off zombies.
- 17:46I can take you down.
- 17:48Right.
- 17:48When...
- 17:49Maybe I'll get overpowered if there's a thaw is in the view,
- 17:52but like I got you.
- 17:54If you're an athletic zombie who is...
- 17:57I don't know, has a virus in you?
- 18:00Over there?
- 18:01Yeah.
- 18:02Then no, I fuck.
- 18:03I'm fucked.
- 18:04Especially because...
- 18:05I don't know.
- 18:06If they like what those zombies do,
- 18:08they retain their human characteristics.
- 18:11Like in this movie, they look like humans, just their eyes change colors.
- 18:16And they get all feral and shit.
- 18:18But you know, if somebody's face is falling off,
- 18:20then I'm a little more like, "Oh, you're a zombie.
- 18:22I can kill you easily."
- 18:23You don't...
- 18:24You lose that like human like quality that makes you feel guilty about killing someone.
- 18:29Yeah.
- 18:30I think the only other faster zombie that has been seen in cinema
- 18:35are the World War Z zombies.
- 18:36I'd say the World War Z zombies were stupid.
- 18:39They were too fast.
- 18:40They felt like a zombie pyramid.
- 18:42It's so unfortunate because World War Z,
- 18:46the book is so good.
- 18:47Yeah, read the book.
- 18:50Read the book.
- 18:51It's amazing.
- 18:51And it's like anthology.
- 18:53But they're making of all these different stories
- 18:56who lived through World War Z.
- 18:58So very, very good.
- 19:00This movie was actually a daddy number one,
- 19:04Killian Murphy's breakout role.
- 19:06I typically think she showed as a dick and as a breakout role.
- 19:10A bald...
- 19:11Yeah.
- 19:12A bald...
- 19:12What in two minutes of him on screen?
- 19:16See his dick and balls?
- 19:17Yeah.
- 19:19And ultimately we see a nod to this opening scene.
- 19:23So Killian Murphy is the main character that we follow through the film.
- 19:27And he wakes up from a coma.
- 19:30So think very like walking dead.
- 19:32I was just gonna say the walking dead took so much inspiration from this, obviously.
- 19:37Yeah.
- 19:37With the actual...
- 19:39The last little...
- 19:39And it is such a powerful plot device, right?
- 19:44Like the world was something when you went to sleep.
- 19:46And then when you woke up, it was completely destroyed.
- 19:49Yeah.
- 19:49The cast that we see is really pretty small.
- 19:52Throughout we have the main evil guy is the military,
- 19:57which is kind of a theme throughout.
- 19:59The prior power structures no longer work within this world.
- 20:05And it's very, very interesting.
- 20:06We see a lot of malice through reason.
- 20:11I guess it's the best way to say it.
- 20:12Yeah.
- 20:12Where it's like...
- 20:14You stop to see people as people.
- 20:16And I feel like that is a common theme in zombie movies.
- 20:19Obviously the zombies are the big overarching threat.
- 20:23But also the threat is just humanity and what we do in our most vulnerable and depraved moments.
- 20:29So even in the walking dead in the most recent seasons towards the end,
- 20:34the zombies were whatever, right?
- 20:36These guys are so good at killing zombies.
- 20:37The real enemy is like what people will do to each other,
- 20:40which is really what it got to at the end of this movie.
- 20:43And I've forgotten that plot point.
- 20:46And then once they got to that military zone,
- 20:50it becomes clear very quickly.
- 20:51There's something going on.
- 20:52Good, right?
- 20:53And you realize they're all men.
- 20:55And then they keep saying over the radio,
- 20:58"Oh, the characters here, the salvage, and it's here."
- 21:01And you're like, "Okay, they want to repopulate the Earth."
- 21:04They're going to try to assault the women, for sure.
- 21:07Yeah.
- 21:08But yeah, it's that's of so common in zombie movies.
- 21:11But I like it.
- 21:12It talks to our more deeper, feral instincts
- 21:14and what we humankind destroys itself.
- 21:17Yeah, absolutely.
- 21:19And you see that throughout zombie films.
- 21:20It's always the people who try to maintain control that have the worst ends in the world
- 21:26that all control has been lost.
- 21:28So it's very interesting.
- 21:29It's like a common plot device.
- 21:31It's directed by Danny Boyle.
- 21:33It's shot in a really unique way for the time as well.
- 21:36It's shot on a Canon XL1.
- 21:39And it has this kind of not-found footage,
- 21:43but you feel like you're there with them.
- 21:45Yeah.
- 21:46What?
- 21:46When I first rented it a couple days ago,
- 21:49like, I paid money for it.
- 21:50And I said, "Why is this potato quality?"
- 21:53Like, "Well, it is this look like ass."
- 21:55And then as it went on, I was like, "Oh, I feel like it's supposed to."
- 21:58I don't look like ass.
- 21:59It is from 2002.
- 22:01But yeah, it is.
- 22:02It's just like, "I feel like that's what they're going for here."
- 22:05Yeah, absolutely.
- 22:06And then it's written by Alex Garland and really just a great film.
- 22:10And it really revived the zombie for interest and made it really, really interesting.
- 22:17Now, like I said before, 28 weeks later,
- 22:19it's actually my favorite of the two.
- 22:21It is more readily available to watch.
- 22:24And that one was just kind of be certified.
- 22:25I don't think I have to pay for that one.
- 22:27Yeah.
- 22:27And in this one, we have Robert Carlisle, Roseburn, Jeremy Renner.
- 22:33Yeah.
- 22:34We have Harold Parano.
- 22:36So there are people in it.
- 22:38Okay.
- 22:38Robert Carlisle, who I love from once upon a time,
- 22:42he plays Rumble Still Skin.
- 22:43He's forever Rumble Still Skin.
- 22:46These are every time I see him.
- 22:47I'll look at Rumble Still Skin.
- 22:49Roseburn is wonderful.
- 22:50Jeremy Renner is Hawkeye, aka Hot Guy.
- 22:54I didn't call with that.
- 22:56And Harold Parano, who's a great guy.
- 22:59Yes.
- 23:01And then of course, we have Daddy,
- 23:03Idris Elba in it as like,
- 23:05had a military guy, I guess.
- 23:08There's half a sector per time.
- 23:10So 28 weeks later is, as you can imagine,
- 23:1428 weeks after the initial zombie apocalypse that breaks out within London.
- 23:22Yeah.
- 23:22I guess the UK as a whole,
- 23:24the island itself, it does go from Cambridge to London to Scotland and all those surrounding here.
- 23:31And then they say spreads worldwide.
- 23:33I think they mentioned first one.
- 23:34There was outbreaks in New York and they mentioned like other countries.
- 23:38I think it's going worldwide, right?
- 23:40Yeah.
- 23:41So in the movies itself,
- 23:43the NATO and US military come to London to help them resettle the UK itself.
- 23:51So at the time, I don't think that it was as big of a thing within the US.
- 23:56So they were trying to keep it out.
- 23:58You're right.
- 23:59You're right.
- 23:59Okay.
- 24:00Yeah, but it did spread to the rest of the UK.
- 24:03Okay.
- 24:03Yes.
- 24:04Yes.
- 24:05And so the plot is that the US military comes in because of course they do.
- 24:11And they can help themselves.
- 24:13Yeah.
- 24:13And they are trying to rebuild London.
- 24:18The disease itself is said to at this 28 weeks later,
- 24:23most of the zombies that were in the initial outbreak have starved out.
- 24:29And it kind of shows that at the end of 28 days later,
- 24:32they do like an overarching shot and then kind of like not disintegrating,
- 24:36but kind of dying on the ground.
- 24:38So you're like, oh, they're obviously starving.
- 24:40But yeah.
- 24:42And so you and children don't come.
- 24:44It's bucket all.
- 24:46Yeah.
- 24:47So you come into 28 weeks later like, okay, all the zombies died out
- 24:51or whatever starved to death, I guess, because they're not actually dead.
- 24:55And so they ultimately aren't that big of an issue.
- 25:00There's still some lingering ones because not everyone got affected at the same time.
- 25:04But it's largely like a neutralized threat.
- 25:07And they're starting to build the city infrastructure again.
- 25:09Yes.
- 25:10And so Robert Carlisle who's done in it, we meet him in the opening scene.
- 25:16And he is a survivor and his children were not in the UK.
- 25:22So they are coming back to live with him.
- 25:24Andy and Tammy.
- 25:26And they know that their mother is dead, I guess, not actually dead.
- 25:32But they know that she's gone.
- 25:33They think that she was attacked by a horde of zombies.
- 25:36In the opening scene, we see Dawn abandon his wife.
- 25:40Oh, that's, yeah.
- 25:42Definitely abandoned her.
- 25:45In the countryside, zombies overtake the house.
- 25:49And he leaves her there to get like eaten by the zombie.
- 25:52You see her in the window.
- 25:54She's like, help me and he runs away.
- 25:58And so the kids don't know that that happened because, of course,
- 26:01you wouldn't tell your children, hey, just your mom.
- 26:03They say that he sees her die.
- 26:07Right.
- 26:08And so the kids come in there in this military zone and they want to go back to their house
- 26:13and look for a picture of their mother and they find their mother there.
- 26:17In this house.
- 26:19These kids.
- 26:20I remember watching this movie just being like, of course, it was children who reason.
- 26:24This is why I don't want to.
- 26:25This is why I will never rip it out.
- 26:28The children restarted the bugle.
- 26:31Yes.
- 26:33And so this one's super interesting because the disease has largely like died out or whatever.
- 26:39We don't know if animals can contain the virus and carry the virus.
- 26:43They don't get infected.
- 26:44But this movie introduces a carrier.
- 26:47So people have been infected but don't actually get the rage virus.
- 26:52Yes.
- 26:52That's right.
- 26:53So the mother that he abandoned actually has that and ends up surviving.
- 26:58And the US military instead of immediately killing her,
- 27:01they want to do tests on her to see can we create an antidote.
- 27:05And then dirty dawn ruins everything.
- 27:08I feel like it's like the kid goes in.
- 27:10And so he gets infected and the outbreak comes again.
- 27:15And so he kisses her in the media.
- 27:17It gets infected.
- 27:18Yeah.
- 27:18The come on, bro.
- 27:20Yeah.
- 27:21And so this one is quite interesting.
- 27:24I think it's just larger and at scale.
- 27:27Yes.
- 27:28When you're 28 days later, you don't really see like the moment of outbreak.
- 27:33But you see it within 28 weeks later and just like how quickly everything goes to shit
- 27:39in that moment.
- 27:40Yeah, it is a larger scale because you're there with Jeremy Reddard,
- 27:43part of the American military who's trying to help roll it.
- 27:47Rose Burns character works for the military too or the government.
- 27:51She's like a doctor.
- 27:52She's the one who wants to make the antidote.
- 27:55Yeah.
- 27:55And so it's definitely like we're 28 days with some more like personal story,
- 27:59which I like.
- 28:00These like each movie gets a little bigger,
- 28:02which is what I'm expecting for the third one as well.
- 28:05Yeah.
- 28:06Absolutely.
- 28:07I think the past is the bigger the scale get.
- 28:09Yeah.
- 28:09And Idris Alva, he has a really good monologue within this movie where she is talking about
- 28:14like the needs of the many overruled, the needs of a few.
- 28:19And if we can save the world by this, we can kill everyone in here.
- 28:25And they're making that moral argument ultimately.
- 28:29So it's not just like all of England in order to save the world.
- 28:33Yeah.
- 28:33Yes.
- 28:37Yeah.
- 28:37And so we follow these kids through the story.
- 28:38Obviously Don dies because he's patient zero again.
- 28:41Because he's done it.
- 28:41But dirty Don, dirty Don, patient zero.
- 28:46I think if you've never seen these movies, they are so amazing and really gritty and have
- 28:52such a good moral thought to them as well.
- 28:55I agree.
- 28:56And just great Gore as well.
- 28:57Yeah.
- 28:58It's great horror and it's gory but not like over the top.
- 29:02Grituitous for you and a score just the right amount.
- 29:05It really keeps the work around it and like this or all.
- 29:09So yeah, good movies all around.
- 29:12Yeah.
- 29:13And you are a comic book person more than me.
- 29:16Did you ever read the comic books?
- 29:19I did it.
- 29:19I honestly didn't know there were comic books.
- 29:21But it makes sense.
- 29:23I feel like there's a lot of comic books for these kind of series movies,
- 29:27especially to fill in gaps for things.
- 29:29Yeah.
- 29:30What happened off screen?
- 29:31What happened when we weren't paying attention or what was going on.
- 29:34So I think it'd be really interesting to read them.
- 29:36Yeah.
- 29:37There's some wonderful issues that she put in there.
- 29:40Yeah.
- 29:41Yeah.
- 29:42So Selena from 28 days later hired by American journalist trying to document the outbreak
- 29:49and she goes back into the infected zones.
- 29:52And you really just explore what this would do to the different characters in a deeper way.
- 29:58Yeah.
- 29:59You can't hear someone's internal monologue, but in a comic you could.
- 30:02Absolutely.
- 30:03Explore their PTSD and just kind of like the feelings that they're going through
- 30:07through losing all of their family.
- 30:09Oh my god, I definitely cried during my rewatch when Jim walks in and finds his parents in bed
- 30:15like holding each other and they have that note that's like, we went to sleep.
- 30:20And so we hope to see you were asleep.
- 30:22So we went to sleep too kind of thing.
- 30:24And then it just says, don't wake up.
- 30:27Oh my god, he woke up and just found his buried dead.
- 30:29Yeah.
- 30:30Rough.
- 30:31Yeah.
- 30:31So emotional.
- 30:32And I'm sure the comic book digs even more into that.
- 30:34Yeah.
- 30:36And the comic book is actually where the infection isn't confined to the UK enters the canon.
- 30:44And so it hits a global pandemic scale and escapes.
- 30:49It's interesting.
- 30:51So now that we kind of know what the canon says about the first two movies, the comic book,
- 30:58we're going to take a quick break and hop into what we know so far about 28 years later
- 31:05and what we hope to see.
- 31:06Okay.
- 31:12So 28 years later, I don't know about you, but when I watched the trailer, I got like full body
- 31:20chills. I think I screamed out loud the first day that it was announced about this movie finally coming out.
- 31:27Yes, I am so excited.
- 31:29And I remember the first reactions from the trailer.
- 31:31Everyone thought that zombie was Killian Murphy.
- 31:33So it looks just like him.
- 31:36And then eventually it came out.
- 31:37No, that is an entire other actor.
- 31:39That is not him and the slightest.
- 31:42Well, I fully think I look like dead Killian Murphy.
- 31:46Yeah.
- 31:47Am I on the wings?
- 31:48It's a great cheekbones.
- 31:50Yeah, all amazing cheekbones.
- 31:52But hopefully Killian Murphy does return as Jim.
- 31:55We do know that he's coming back as a executive producer.
- 31:58And last we saw Jim, he's alive.
- 32:00So it would make me happy to see him and Selena still together.
- 32:04It's still fighting zombies after all these years.
- 32:08Yeah, that'd be really interesting for him to live.
- 32:12It does feel a little hokey for him to survive that long.
- 32:16Yeah, but who knows just given the harshness of that world.
- 32:21But I'm all here for it because I want Killian Murphy back.
- 32:23I just wanted to see him again.
- 32:25I don't care.
- 32:25I'd be like, I wanted to hunker down in a shelter for the last 28 years.
- 32:29I would see the sunlight.
- 32:30Like I wanted to see him again.
- 32:32Like a real quiet place.
- 32:34Killian, like a quiet place too.
- 32:36And I hope he shows his dick and balls again just for all times.
- 32:39Yeah, yeah, break out.
- 32:41Break out post-osfer.
- 32:43Did he want an oscar?
- 32:44Yeah.
- 32:45Yeah.
- 32:45No, hey.
- 32:46I don't know.
- 32:47That's a boy movie.
- 32:48Post-award season.
- 32:49Let's see the Twig and Berry's post-award season.
- 32:51[laughs]
- 32:53Yeah.
- 32:54So if you watch the trailer,
- 32:56it really has this kind of like cult religious aspect to it.
- 33:03Yeah.
- 33:03I don't know.
- 33:04I think there are a few of them out.
- 33:06But it really does seem like the people who have survived by this time.
- 33:11Who do you have to become and what beliefs do you have to have
- 33:15in order to like live?
- 33:16They don't like it.
- 33:17Yeah.
- 33:1828 years into the apocalypse.
- 33:19You've had to have done some shit to get this long.
- 33:22Or there's babies that have been bored.
- 33:25You never knew a world before this.
- 33:27Kind of like in the last of us,
- 33:29like Bella Ramsey's Kelly.
- 33:31Doesn't even know a little world outside of the apocalypse.
- 33:33So I'm sure we'll have some of that too.
- 33:36Why people are reproducing in the apocalypse?
- 33:38I don't know.
- 33:40I'm not guys.
- 33:41Well, I mean,
- 33:43yeah, I guess, but you know, it's only so effective there.
- 33:47But that's true.
- 33:48Yeah.
- 33:49Yeah.
- 33:49Just having a baby and like a crying baby.
- 33:51Yeah.
- 33:52That sounds awful.
- 33:53Like in you already mentioned this,
- 33:55the quiet place where she has the baby.
- 33:56Oh my god, girl.
- 33:57Come on.
- 33:58You'd have to be next to a waterfall.
- 34:00Oh, listen, just live under that waterfall.
- 34:03And no, but I'm really I'm excited to see how everyone survived
- 34:08over the last 28 years.
- 34:09What society and civilization looks like now.
- 34:12Yeah.
- 34:14And the cast is stacked.
- 34:16We have Jack O'Connell, who was just in centers.
- 34:19We have a race finds who we were correct.
- 34:23He got confirmed for the Hunger Games.
- 34:25Oh, we've tried about so many of them by the way.
- 34:28So many.
- 34:29Welcome.
- 34:30You're welcome.
- 34:31Pop culture, Jackie.
- 34:32So do you burn it?
- 34:33But then we have daddy number three,
- 34:37Aaron Taylor Johnson.
- 34:39Oh my god, he's in this.
- 34:40I'm not forgiving.
- 34:41Yeah.
- 34:41Oh, he's so fine.
- 34:43And mommy number one, Jody Comar.
- 34:46What?
- 34:50Jody Comar.
- 34:51Have you, yeah, have you ever seen killing Eve?
- 34:53Oh, I've seen her before.
- 34:55Oh, yeah, she's cool.
- 34:56Okay.
- 34:57I'm going to show you.
- 34:58She's a mom number mom number one.
- 35:00You shut your horn mouth.
- 35:02Like, I'm going to shut your horn.
- 35:03Don't.
- 35:04No, no.
- 35:06Okay, first of all, it's mommy number one for this series.
- 35:10Uh, okay.
- 35:11Not all mothers of all time.
- 35:13Yeah.
- 35:14Yeah.
- 35:15Keep up.
- 35:15Rose Burns, kind of mother to though.
- 35:17Yeah, but yeah, I don't know.
- 35:21A Jody Comar watch killing Eve and I think you'll get it.
- 35:24I will report back.
- 35:24You'll get it.
- 35:25Yeah.
- 35:26It's good.
- 35:27It's good stuff.
- 35:27We have director Danny Boyle returning and then Danny Boyle and Alex Garland
- 35:33really spearheading the movie.
- 35:36Just like we had in 28 days later.
- 35:40Yes, I think it's great to bring back those original directors.
- 35:43Like, they were there from the onslaught and know the vision.
- 35:47I love that.
- 35:47Yeah, and going into it again, the comic book canon isn't movie canon.
- 35:53So really, well, no, I guess like it's, it hasn't been introduced to the movies.
- 35:59I guess it's the best way to say that.
- 36:01Yeah, you're right.
- 36:02So really speculation about what we might see within this is,
- 36:07are we going to see the infection hit mainland Europe or America?
- 36:12Yeah.
- 36:13Has the virus evolved?
- 36:14Are there now variants or long term infected that can survive longer?
- 36:20Yeah.
- 36:21If it's been 28 years, it had to have spread to other countries, especially after we saw
- 36:26in 28 weeks later how bad they were at containing this thing.
- 36:29Like, it took some dumb ass dad is too sticky to give.
- 36:34So like, it's totally re-rewarded.
- 36:36Ruined it.
- 36:36Yeah.
- 36:36So if it doesn't spread to the rest of the world, I will be disappointed.
- 36:41Yeah, I think we could see that within it.
- 36:44And then ultimately, just like we mentioned, the religious aspect of it,
- 36:48the kind of cultism, the small communities, and outside people are bad.
- 36:53And what does that do over such a prolonged period of time?
- 36:56I think it's going to be a really, really interesting world, also post pandemic.
- 37:02Yeah.
- 37:03How are we going to make a commentary on that?
- 37:05It's been 17 years since the first ones came out.
- 37:10How are they going to evolve it?
- 37:12Now that the closest thing that any of us have at our time lines of photo quote,
- 37:18like, "Sick apocalypse or a zombie illness, blue thing, this COVID,
- 37:22will they, will any of that kind of symbolism work its way in?"
- 37:26Yeah.
- 37:26I mean, I think it's a disaster.
- 37:28Yeah.
- 37:29I've been on a mask today for the first time in years that I was like,
- 37:31"Fuck, that's a lot of it."
- 37:35Also on the summer.
- 37:36Oh, that's a worst.
- 37:38Oh, a mask in the summer, ill.
- 37:39In Arizona, yeah.
- 37:41Yeah, just sweat out.
- 37:43Just sweat out.
- 37:43We're all wet masks.
- 37:44We're all wet masks.
- 37:45Yeah.
- 37:46Yeah.
- 37:46Just put it aside.
- 37:48It's time to be alive.
- 37:49Yeah.
- 37:51I really hope that we see Daddy Kellyanne Murphy make a comeback.
- 37:55And really, if you look at the summary on IMBD,
- 37:59it's a group of survivors of the rage virus live on a small island.
- 38:04One of the group members leaves that island to try to go to the mainland.
- 38:08And they go on a crazy journey.
- 38:11And so I think that's really going to be an interesting one of like the outsider
- 38:16in that argument.
- 38:17Yeah.
- 38:18So I'm just overall so excited.
- 38:20We know we're going to get some amazing zombie scenes as well.
- 38:23I hope it's really good.
- 38:24I hope it does well.
- 38:26And I hope it has a good rot in tomato's score.
- 38:28And it is everything that you and I have been hoping that it'll be.
- 38:32I feel like they made two bangers.
- 38:38Yeah, they can't mess this one up.
- 38:39I'm not like, I agree.
- 38:42I think it's going to be incredible.
- 38:43And I also think the budget is so much higher now.
- 38:47There's special effects and things.
- 38:49And you just, it's going to look incredible, horrified.
- 38:53Yeah, and I'm just, I'm really looking forward to it.
- 38:55And I wish I'd be good to watch it to get there.
- 38:57We both have to face time each other in a movie theater.
- 39:02Right.
- 39:03Here I am.
- 39:04That won't be annoying in the slide.
- 39:06It can scare you movie.

- 39:33We'd love to know your thoughts once the movie comes out.
- 39:38And which is your favorite of the two movies that we have today?
- 39:44Ooh, I have a fun fact.
- 39:46About 28 years later, it was shot on an iPhone 15 pro max in order to make a call back to the original 28 days later,
- 39:57which was partially filled on a hampled quarter.
- 39:59So that's kind of cool.
- 40:02I don't know if the entire thing could be.
- 40:04Yeah, I'm absolutely fine.
- 40:05That feels hard.
- 40:05Maybe it's when the kids are like running.
- 40:07And yeah, yeah, I could sit down resting.
- 40:10I like that.
- 40:11Wow.

- 40:14Yeah, they're too good now.
- 40:16Get a camera.

- 40:17They're good enough for 28 weeks later.
- 40:20They're good enough for me.
- 40:21Now, it's time for us to go prepare for the upcoming apocalypse.
- 40:28Get our bow bags ready.
- 40:30Whatever one does in his own, be apocalypse to try to survive.
