- 0:08Speaker 1: Hey, babe, is fla la kenks with rand We are back.
- 0:11Speaker 1: Happy Wednesday, Happy Wednesday Wednesday, And to those of you
- 0:17Speaker 1: who drank happy motherfucking hump Day, I hope you got
- 0:20Speaker 1: lit for me. There you go, because it's been one
- 0:24Speaker 1: hell of a week so far. Randall knows why.
- 0:29Speaker 2: Yes, it has been a week. You're not going to
- 0:32Speaker 2: bring this up.
- 0:33Speaker 1: I mean Monday we shot the main titles for vander
- 0:36Speaker 1: Pump Roules correction you and well hold up? Not really.
- 0:41Speaker 1: So Randall had asked me if it was a cool
- 0:46Speaker 1: idea if he did main titles. Now keep in mind,
- 0:49Speaker 1: it wasn't like correct, and then you came to me
- 0:51Speaker 1: and said, like, what do you think? Right, it wasn't.
- 0:54Speaker 1: I originally thought it was like they were going to
- 0:56Speaker 1: give Randall a title card, you know, where he'd be
- 0:58Speaker 1: like spilling drinks in the.
- 1:00Speaker 3: Opening credits, which we said, no, that.
- 1:04Speaker 1: Cannot happen. But come to find out, it was like
- 1:07Speaker 1: just the main shot, like the group shot where it's
- 1:09Speaker 1: like vander Pump rules.
- 1:10Speaker 2: Here twenty people.
- 1:12Speaker 1: Right, so you did it?
- 1:13Speaker 2: Well, hold on, let's let's go through the process. I
- 1:15Speaker 2: was having a meltdown because I was like, this is
- 1:18Speaker 2: a lot, and then you, you know, you and everybody
- 1:21Speaker 2: else who we talked to thought, oh my god, it'd
- 1:23Speaker 2: be fun to be next to you. Blah blah blah blah.
- 1:27Speaker 2: So I got the courage up to accept the kind invitation. Correct,
- 1:31Speaker 2: I didn't know what it really meant because I've never
- 1:35Speaker 2: been in part of anything like that. And so I
- 1:38Speaker 2: went to the Sir restaurant with you. Correct walked in
- 1:42Speaker 2: and everything was like tented, so it didn't look like
- 1:44Speaker 2: sir like when you go there and have cocktails or.
- 1:47Speaker 1: No, it was like a set.
- 1:47Speaker 2: It was like a set totally. There were there were
- 1:50Speaker 2: TV cameras, there were still cameras, there was makeup and
- 1:53Speaker 2: hair was it was a big production. I didn't know
- 1:55Speaker 2: what I was walking. I think if I knew that,
- 1:56Speaker 2: I probably Oh, you.
- 1:57Speaker 1: Thought we were just some like mom and pop show.
- 2:00Speaker 2: But I don't think that.
- 2:01Speaker 1: I think that you didn't expect there to be like
- 2:03Speaker 1: real cameras.
- 2:04Speaker 2: I didn't think there'd be like a crew of thirty
- 2:05Speaker 2: five p I mean, it was big. And I walked
- 2:07Speaker 2: in and I was like, if I knew it was lad,
- 2:08Speaker 2: I probably would have just stayed home. But I thought
- 2:10Speaker 2: I'd just come in and be like a still camera.
- 2:11Speaker 2: We just knock out a shot and go home. So
- 2:13Speaker 2: right away I walk into uh, well you walk into
- 2:17Speaker 2: hair and makeup, and then the guy. The guy was
- 2:19Speaker 2: very nice. I don't know his name. He was like,
- 2:21Speaker 2: he's like, just sit here, Ran, and I was like, oh, okay,
- 2:23Speaker 2: thank you for giving me a seat. But I didn't
- 2:25Speaker 2: know that meant I'm going to get hair and makeup,
- 2:27Speaker 2: because that's what he meant. So then he's just start
- 2:29Speaker 2: caking stuff on my face and I'm like shell shocked.
- 2:32Speaker 2: And then we sit there together and anyway, the next
- 2:37Speaker 2: thing I know is then we're lining up for a
- 2:39Speaker 2: photo and I'm all, I'm saying to myself, I didn't
- 2:42Speaker 2: tell you this, but all I'm saying to myself is
- 2:44Speaker 2: this is like a burnt's foot photo. That's what I
- 2:47Speaker 2: tried to think about. This my burn MIT's put photo.
- 2:49Speaker 2: And I was like, this is my burnet's photo. These
- 2:51Speaker 2: are my family and friends watching, and the director is
- 2:54Speaker 2: like moving everybody around, and I'm just like, this is brutal,
- 2:58Speaker 2: but it was. It was really neat to see your world,
- 3:03Speaker 2: like how big it is. I mean, it's much bigger
- 3:05Speaker 2: than I think people realize.
- 3:06Speaker 1: Like, I think it's much bigger than you realize, because
- 3:09Speaker 1: if you remember, it wasn't too long ago. By the way,
- 3:11Speaker 1: we have my fiance's best friend of one hundred million years,
- 3:17Speaker 1: Mike Burns. Here, Hi, Mikey. He's just patiently waiting.
- 3:21Speaker 2: We have we didn't sell people, but we have Mike Burns,
- 3:23Speaker 2: the director of your.
- 3:24Speaker 1: Movie Out of Death. Yes, and but he's looking like
- 3:27Speaker 1: he wants to chime in about how his friend looking
- 3:30Speaker 1: at me shaking his head. Okay, back to it wasn't
- 3:35Speaker 1: long ago that Randall I would be like doing the
- 3:39Speaker 1: show and Randall would blow me up, like what are
- 3:43Speaker 1: you doing? It's like, I know you think that the
- 3:45Speaker 1: first year, I had no clue, you had no idea.
- 3:48Speaker 2: You know.
- 3:48Speaker 1: It's like he so yesterday and throughout the season he's
- 3:52Speaker 1: seen like, oh, these people like they're like living their
- 3:57Speaker 1: real lives and she actually busy doing that. And yesterday,
- 4:02Speaker 1: how long did that did that main picture take?
- 4:04Speaker 2: All?
- 4:05Speaker 4: Right?
- 4:05Speaker 2: We arrived at four forty five and we didn't leave
- 4:08Speaker 2: till nine o'clock. That's like that was intense. And by
- 4:11Speaker 2: the way, yeah, for the last three or four years,
- 4:14Speaker 2: I know now the deal, but the first year, I
- 4:16Speaker 2: was like, oh, you're going to film, and I thought
- 4:18Speaker 2: that'd be like an hour and you'd come back like
- 4:20Speaker 2: eleven hours later. It's like it's your real life. They
- 4:23Speaker 2: follow you everywhere you go, they do all these things.
- 4:26Speaker 2: It's pretty it's pretty intense. I give everybody on this show,
- 4:29Speaker 2: in all reality shows, after seeing a little taste of it,
- 4:33Speaker 2: a lot of my hats off to you because it's
- 4:36Speaker 2: long days and you know, you guys are really good
- 4:39Speaker 2: at what you do.
- 4:40Speaker 1: I just I mean, we must have been standing there
- 4:43Speaker 1: for three hours straight just trying to get everybody's facial
- 4:46Speaker 1: expression perfect, their movement, they're set up. I probably got
- 4:50Speaker 1: on and off the same chair fourteen times yea to
- 4:53Speaker 1: lift it with boxes before they were like, can you
- 4:56Speaker 1: everyone's now perfect, Wila, can you somehow try to get
- 5:00Speaker 1: off the chair again and just stand I'm like, my god,
- 5:02Speaker 1: it's a grueling day.
- 5:04Speaker 2: It's long and by the way, and then.
- 5:05Speaker 1: You just thought you were going to roll in there,
- 5:06Speaker 1: get the shot and dip.
- 5:07Speaker 2: No, they told me this would be a quick thing.
- 5:10Speaker 4: Now.
- 5:10Speaker 2: And then after we did this one big group photo,
- 5:13Speaker 2: I got to leave and you then had to go
- 5:15Speaker 2: do your like slow motion little solo thing, and that
- 5:19Speaker 2: you didn't even get home till.
- 5:21Speaker 1: My calltime was four forty five and you get home
- 5:23Speaker 1: till one one in the morning.
- 5:24Speaker 2: That's that's enough for one shot. I mean, I gotta say,
- 5:27Speaker 2: it is an art. The show is awesome. It's really
- 5:30Speaker 2: cool to work.
- 5:31Speaker 1: All the people that are creating the main titles are geniuses,
- 5:36Speaker 1: and like they look at every little detail, you.
- 5:38Speaker 2: Know, And then we had to keep our eyes open.
- 5:40Speaker 2: They kept saying, we had to close our eyes and open.
- 5:42Speaker 1: Up and have the fule thing directly in your face,
- 5:44Speaker 1: and they're like, keep the eyes open, keep the eyes open.
- 5:47Speaker 1: They're just like burning your eyeboso, Crisp.
- 5:50Speaker 2: I am petrified to see this because I am by
- 5:54Speaker 2: no means like you guys as models, and you know.
- 5:58Speaker 1: We're all basically like retired mactors model actors.
- 6:02Speaker 2: Yeah, and I'm the middle aged person looks like your
- 6:08Speaker 2: grandfather in this picture, So there you go.
- 6:10Speaker 1: Maybe my dad and not my grandfather. Definitely you could be.
- 6:14Speaker 3: My dad though, Okay, thank you.
- 6:16Speaker 2: So anyway, it was really neat to be part of it.
- 6:18Speaker 2: I really never thought if they asked me, did you
- 6:21Speaker 2: ever think you would be here? And I said absolutely not.
- 6:23Speaker 2: But Lala is very persuasive and very opinionated, and so
- 6:27Speaker 2: therefore somehow I ended up there. So it was neat
- 6:31Speaker 2: to see you guys do what you do. And I'm
- 6:33Speaker 2: always taking my hat off a show that's been on.
- 6:35Speaker 2: I say this. I say it to Lisa, I say
- 6:37Speaker 2: it to all the casts. You guys have been on
- 6:39Speaker 2: the air for nine years. That is a huge accomplishment
- 6:42Speaker 2: in television, whether it's scripted or unscripted. It's a hit show.
- 6:47Speaker 2: My hat's off to everybody, and congratulations on another season
- 6:51Speaker 2: and I can't wait to see you and hopefully not
- 6:55Speaker 2: a lot of me, but there you go.
- 6:56Speaker 1: Okay, I love it. There was a time that Randall
- 6:59Speaker 1: was like, I will not do the show unless it
- 7:02Speaker 1: equals out to be you know, like X amount of
- 7:06Speaker 1: dollars and.
- 7:08Speaker 3: Now here he is no hold on time backwards.
- 7:12Speaker 2: You know that I said that because you know and
- 7:15Speaker 2: I know that we had that conversation we got together
- 7:17Speaker 2: that I was never going to appear on the show, right,
- 7:19Speaker 2: and then you about three years in, were like, babe,
- 7:24Speaker 2: will you just show up a few times just just
- 7:26Speaker 2: because I have to show my real life and you're
- 7:28Speaker 2: part of.
- 7:28Speaker 1: It, right, well, I can only be a girl in
- 7:31Speaker 1: her late twenties taking her top off for so long
- 7:34Speaker 1: before it's like we need to show, like what my
- 7:37Speaker 1: life is really like, like I have someone at home.
- 7:39Speaker 3: It's like right, and so do.
- 7:40Speaker 1: You do me as solid?
- 7:42Speaker 2: And you were really smart because you said to me,
- 7:44Speaker 2: let's just go with Jackson Britain and the dinner. We'll
- 7:46Speaker 2: just go to the wedding. You get in a lease
- 7:48Speaker 2: of Vanner pompas smart. She's like Dolly. So my point
- 7:51Speaker 2: is is that somehow you guys got my head, told
- 7:55Speaker 2: me it'd be three or four times I have.
- 7:56Speaker 1: To appear, and you were great though, rand you added
- 7:59Speaker 1: like such a life hearted aspect to the show. You know,
- 8:03Speaker 1: I'm just.
- 8:04Speaker 2: Gonna say that I never thought, you know, you guys
- 8:08Speaker 2: made it fun for me. And the few times that
- 8:10Speaker 2: I do, you know, you know, come on with you,
- 8:14Speaker 2: it's always kind of been a fun setting. So that
- 8:16Speaker 2: made it easy for me. Yeah. But anyway, I'm excited
- 8:19Speaker 2: and congratulations on another season. Thank you.
- 8:22Speaker 1: In sadder news still Bravo related, obviously, because I don't
- 8:26Speaker 1: know anything else besides Bravo.
- 8:29Speaker 3: Literally, oh this is sad news for you.
- 8:32Speaker 1: Bravo. kN has officially been canceled for twenty.
- 8:34Speaker 3: Twenty one, which is crazy, I.
- 8:37Speaker 1: Know, and can I tell you sucks. It does suck.
- 8:40Speaker 1: But I was talking to Sheena and we were both
- 8:42Speaker 1: freaking out about number one leaving our babies behind for
- 8:46Speaker 1: four days and two we both are still breastfeeding and
- 8:53Speaker 1: to have to pump regularly and also not feel you know,
- 8:57Speaker 1: never in my life have I ever thought that the
- 9:01Speaker 1: saying don't cry over spilled milk it could not be
- 9:06Speaker 1: less true. Well, I also think don't cry over I'm
- 9:11Speaker 1: gonna cry over spilled milk. So if I'm pumping in
- 9:14Speaker 1: New York for Bravo Con, I need to save that shit.
- 9:16Speaker 1: So that was a whole thing between Shinna and I
- 9:18Speaker 1: like how are we going to save this? How are
- 9:20Speaker 1: we going to package it and get it back home?
- 9:22Speaker 1: And then I was thinking about it like thank you
- 9:25Speaker 1: Bravo for keeping us all safe.
- 9:27Speaker 2: Yeah, by the way, And that's what I want to
- 9:29Speaker 2: say is that obviously Bravo Con is such a big
- 9:33Speaker 2: fan friendly event. I mean, I went the first year
- 9:35Speaker 2: to support you and everybody wants to mingle and talk,
- 9:39Speaker 2: and clearly we can't have that right now with COVID
- 9:44Speaker 2: and the Delta Varian. Yeah, so you know, my hat's
- 9:47Speaker 2: off again to NBC Universal and Bravo because it wouldn't
- 9:52Speaker 2: have been safe. And I think this was the right call.
- 9:54Speaker 2: And so at the end of the day, there will
- 9:56Speaker 2: be Bravo con again, right, and we just have to
- 9:58Speaker 2: wait till next year.
- 9:59Speaker 1: Yeah. I was definitely happy that their focus was to
- 10:03Speaker 1: keep us safe. And you know, we went to World
- 10:05Speaker 1: Dog Day this weekend and I even though it was outside,
- 10:08Speaker 1: like you get a little nervous. I have a baby
- 10:10Speaker 1: at home. Other people have babies at home, like we
- 10:13Speaker 1: all have families, And there were people that would come
- 10:15Speaker 1: up and ask if they could hug me, and I
- 10:17Speaker 1: was straight up and I'm usually never like this.
- 10:19Speaker 2: You're a hugger.
- 10:21Speaker 1: I'm a hugger, and I'm usually even if I don't
- 10:23Speaker 1: want to, like, I'll still do it. And World Dog
- 10:26Speaker 1: Day was the first day, yeah, first time ever that
- 10:28Speaker 1: I was like, no, I'm sorry, but right.
- 10:30Speaker 2: Now it's a scary time again. And it's been a
- 10:33Speaker 2: scary time. And we thought for a minute, you know,
- 10:36Speaker 2: like with the vaccine that you know, things were really
- 10:39Speaker 2: hit turned and now here we are again, you know,
- 10:42Speaker 2: in a really scary time again. So we just all
- 10:44Speaker 2: have to do we have to do to stay safe,
- 10:46Speaker 2: keep everybody safe, and I'm just praying for the best
- 10:49Speaker 2: for everybody because you know, it's a it's a really
- 10:52Speaker 2: odd couple of years that we're all living in. So
- 10:56Speaker 2: so anyway, I'm excited because today we're gonna cut them.
- 11:00Speaker 2: But I just want to say our next guest is
- 11:01Speaker 2: Mike Burns. Michael Burns, who I grew up with in Miami,
- 11:05Speaker 2: will talk about how he and I found our love
- 11:08Speaker 2: for film together and the and the irony. We have
- 11:11Speaker 2: a story to tell, and we'll tell it when he
- 11:12Speaker 2: comes on, about the irony of fate. And I do
- 11:15Speaker 2: believe in fate, and I do believe that fate has
- 11:17Speaker 2: a big role in our lives. At least that's what
- 11:20Speaker 2: I believe, and he does too, And we'll talk about
- 11:22Speaker 2: fate and how we started in movies together and what
- 11:26Speaker 2: happened this year for both of us and the odds
- 11:28Speaker 2: of that. But on top of that, he directed you
- 11:31Speaker 2: in your last movie, Out of Death. That was his
- 11:33Speaker 2: first thing.
- 11:34Speaker 1: Thank god it was him, because I was hormonally like
- 11:38Speaker 1: it was I wasn't.
- 11:39Speaker 2: There, But are are you? Gonna let him be open to.
- 11:42Speaker 3: Tell us about Ye yes, I will totally.
- 11:46Speaker 2: This is gonna be going. All right, let's cut the break.
- 11:48Speaker 2: We'll come right back with Mike Burns and.
- 11:54Speaker 1: We are back. Okay, before we bring mikey on, no,
- 12:00Speaker 1: I just have to share what happened a couple of
- 12:02Speaker 1: days ago that like shook me to my court. I
- 12:05Speaker 1: had always wondered what it would be like the first
- 12:07Speaker 1: time you see your child bleeding and you don't know
- 12:10Speaker 1: where it's coming from, because I've I've seen this on TV,
- 12:13Speaker 1: like Real Housewives of o see this woman that did
- 12:16Speaker 1: one season like her kid's hand was bleeding and she
- 12:19Speaker 1: didn't She was like, where is it coming from? Like
- 12:21Speaker 1: the bloods everywhere whatever, freaking out and I was like,
- 12:23Speaker 1: oh my god, I can't imagine. So I take Ocean
- 12:27Speaker 1: to Jackson Britney's house and she's standing I even posted
- 12:31Speaker 1: it on Graham. She's standing on like her little plaything.
- 12:34Speaker 1: It stands you up, but she can't reach the bottom
- 12:36Speaker 1: so that she can move around. So we added books
- 12:39Speaker 1: underneath for her to be able to touch. So whatever
- 12:42Speaker 1: I go over, I pick her up, I'm holding her,
- 12:44Speaker 1: I'm holding her feet and my hand is wet and
- 12:47Speaker 1: there's blood all over my hand.
- 12:48Speaker 2: Yeah, that's that's not good.
- 12:50Speaker 1: And I just started freaking out. I was like, oh
- 12:52Speaker 1: my god, my baby's bleeding. I like rush her to
- 12:54Speaker 1: the sink. I'm putting her feet under the water. And
- 12:56Speaker 1: then I see that she has all of these tiny
- 12:58Speaker 1: little paper cuts all over her feet from the book,
- 13:01Speaker 1: from the books, and I just started sobbing. She didn't
- 13:05Speaker 1: make a peep. She did not make one peep about it,
- 13:08Speaker 1: which made me feel even worse. So that I officially
- 13:11Speaker 1: experienced my first time with ocean having a boo boo
- 13:16Speaker 1: that was bleeding.
- 13:17Speaker 2: Yeah, that's scary. That's scary that that that moment is
- 13:19Speaker 2: definitely a moment you'll remember forever because it's like, you.
- 13:22Speaker 1: Know, speaking of I need to write it in her book.
- 13:24Speaker 1: I forgot. Oh wait, I didn't forget. I did write
- 13:26Speaker 1: it in the book.
- 13:27Speaker 2: Okay, I did. Well. I mean, I'm glad it was
- 13:31Speaker 2: it was.
- 13:32Speaker 1: I mean, I'm not being the day was great. The
- 13:34Speaker 1: day ended up being great.
- 13:35Speaker 2: Yeah, that was a heavy subject heavy moment there, but.
- 13:38Speaker 1: But you know what I mean, I feel like moms
- 13:39Speaker 1: that listen to the podcast can relate though.
- 13:41Speaker 2: By the way, it's mostly moms and and women are demographics,
- 13:46Speaker 2: so I think they will enjoy that story.
- 13:48Speaker 1: Yeah, they'll understand. All right, onto lighter topics.
- 13:53Speaker 3: Let's pivot, let's pist.
- 13:54Speaker 2: So let's bring it out. Mike Burns, Mike, Mike, welcome,
- 13:57Speaker 2: Welcome to the podcast.
- 13:58Speaker 5: Hey guys, Hey, that was my story. Was a hard
- 14:00Speaker 5: act to follow.
- 14:04Speaker 2: Okay, So so Mike, so let's talk about a couple
- 14:07Speaker 2: of things. So you and I we grew up together.
- 14:10Speaker 2: Tell people kind of our story from your perspective, like
- 14:13Speaker 2: where we grew up in you know, a cliff note
- 14:15Speaker 2: version of just us, and how we fell in love
- 14:17Speaker 2: with movies together and went to college together and things
- 14:20Speaker 2: like that.
- 14:20Speaker 5: Well, it started when you crashed my fourth grade birthday party.
- 14:23Speaker 2: Because I wasn't invited.
- 14:25Speaker 1: Yeah, so you crashed it.
- 14:25Speaker 2: He had a jumping house.
- 14:26Speaker 5: So here's the sixth grader jumping in a jumping house
- 14:29Speaker 5: with a bunch of fourth graders.
- 14:31Speaker 2: Sounds about right, right, A lot of sounds about right.
- 14:33Speaker 5: Now changed pretty much the same, and I just sound
- 14:38Speaker 5: and then then and then he held that against me
- 14:41Speaker 5: till he was thirteen, when he has bar Mitzva. He
- 14:42Speaker 5: didn't purposely didn't invite me because he was still so
- 14:44Speaker 5: angry about that. So I didn't get to go to.
- 14:46Speaker 2: The bar Mitzi.
- 14:47Speaker 5: I don't think and I almost a little angry about
- 14:49Speaker 5: them myself. A grudge holder, you are, I don't think
- 14:52Speaker 5: that we just weren't that close friends.
- 14:54Speaker 2: We weren't close.
- 14:54Speaker 5: I just happened to have a bouncy castle and that
- 14:56Speaker 5: was all he wanted in. Yeah, he wanted in, that
- 14:58Speaker 5: is it.
- 14:58Speaker 2: Yeah. And the truth is I did not intentionally not
- 15:01Speaker 2: invited my burns, but my parents controlled the list because
- 15:04Speaker 2: I was twelve years old turning thirteen. Let's leave it
- 15:07Speaker 2: at that. So Leslie and ethan Y blocked my childhood friend.
- 15:11Speaker 2: You're welcome.
- 15:12Speaker 5: So then when we were that we wasn't until we
- 15:16Speaker 5: were fifty, no till I No, that was thirteen, and
- 15:18Speaker 5: you were.
- 15:19Speaker 2: Fififteen, sixteen, So when I was in high school when
- 15:21Speaker 2: we started making films together.
- 15:23Speaker 5: So let's say we pretty much met in junior high
- 15:25Speaker 5: pretty I mean, I'm there, but like we started to
- 15:27Speaker 5: hang because his sister would they would go to school
- 15:29Speaker 5: together and commute and do all this stuff. And they
- 15:31Speaker 5: were in the same theater class. Your sister, my sister.
- 15:34Speaker 2: Yeah, his sister and I were in the same class,
- 15:37Speaker 2: went to New Old School. The arts are pouring.
- 15:38Speaker 1: Artsize, and your sister is on Broadway.
- 15:41Speaker 2: Correct.
- 15:41Speaker 5: Yeah, she's she's a musical theater actress and.
- 15:44Speaker 3: She does a lot of Broadway, so it's amazing.
- 15:46Speaker 2: Burns Yeah, yeah, very talented. By the way, she was
- 15:49Speaker 2: off for record deals at like nine years old. She
- 15:51Speaker 2: had like the sickest voice. So Gloria asked the final
- 15:54Speaker 2: all types of people were trying to sign her at
- 15:55Speaker 2: like dying ten eleven years old. It was nuts.
- 15:58Speaker 1: Okay, so you guys not basically teen fifteen is when
- 16:01Speaker 1: you became friends and did you did you share the
- 16:03Speaker 1: love of creating films? Is that what kind of put
- 16:06Speaker 1: you guys together?
- 16:07Speaker 5: We were both my sister was acting and Brandy was acting,
- 16:11Speaker 5: and I started acting, and Junior high was the first
- 16:13Speaker 5: place you could start taking drama classes, so we all
- 16:15Speaker 5: kind of were in the mix there. But my dad
- 16:18Speaker 5: had bought a camera video camera, so.
- 16:20Speaker 2: With the cord that went to the vle like.
- 16:23Speaker 5: One machine had all the tapes in it. The other
- 16:24Speaker 5: one was a big ass battery pack that you have
- 16:27Speaker 5: to care could only going twenty either way. I mean
- 16:29Speaker 5: it was like crazy, yeah, and I could. I mean
- 16:31Speaker 5: they were there was like forty five pounds and you
- 16:33Speaker 5: had to carry around and we.
- 16:34Speaker 2: Had and we had to film each other like being
- 16:36Speaker 2: in the movie.
- 16:37Speaker 5: So like Micha, Well, we only had two of us,
- 16:39Speaker 5: so my sister would and our sister would, our sister
- 16:42Speaker 5: would play like the girlfriend like that broke my heart.
- 16:45Speaker 5: At the Christmas we had we had a tripod, so
- 16:47Speaker 5: we did do scenes together and we had some fun
- 16:49Speaker 5: stuff and we were just like having fun, just making videos.
- 16:52Speaker 2: And but we did. We did. I mean we have
- 16:54Speaker 2: we found the tapes, the lost tapes. We have the
- 16:56Speaker 2: Mike found when we'd convert them to DVD, so we.
- 16:59Speaker 1: Have Okay, where where do we watch? You have to Mike,
- 17:03Speaker 1: can you take the Can you take them and put
- 17:06Speaker 1: them so that we can put them on social media?
- 17:08Speaker 2: Oh oh my god.
- 17:09Speaker 5: I don't know if they're going to feel a good
- 17:10Speaker 5: fit for your your social people are gonna be like,
- 17:14Speaker 5: what the fuck is this?
- 17:15Speaker 1: We're Randall's social all right, Yeah.
- 17:19Speaker 5: We could do that.
- 17:20Speaker 2: Listen so fun. So so here's here's a summary. We
- 17:23Speaker 2: made probably twenty thirty forty music videos, commercials, short films,
- 17:28Speaker 2: like anything. We could just come up. We use we
- 17:30Speaker 2: would borrow the car in the neighborhood to have the
- 17:31Speaker 2: parent come and drive it, roll it up back and forth,
- 17:34Speaker 2: like production value.
- 17:35Speaker 1: Like we that is so adorable, and.
- 17:36Speaker 5: We love movies too. We actually got dressed up for
- 17:39Speaker 5: to go see Wall Street in like suits.
- 17:41Speaker 2: With glasses, with the ties, with everything. And then and
- 17:43Speaker 2: we like, we didn't have a lot of friends. We
- 17:45Speaker 2: didn't have a lot of friends.
- 17:46Speaker 1: We're gonna be I can't imagine why.
- 17:49Speaker 2: This is the eighties and we just do it. No,
- 17:51Speaker 2: we just didn't have a lot of friends. We were
- 17:52Speaker 2: we were Did.
- 17:53Speaker 1: You go to New World too?
- 17:54Speaker 2: Yes?
- 17:55Speaker 6: He did?
- 17:55Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, so yeah, we both, we both, we both.
- 18:00Speaker 2: He didn't finish.
- 18:03Speaker 1: Well, it's not like he didn't finish Harvard and he
- 18:05Speaker 1: didn't finish the New World.
- 18:06Speaker 2: Who finished a lot of schools he started.
- 18:08Speaker 1: But it's fine. Look at him now thriving.
- 18:10Speaker 2: Okay, listen. So so here's what happened. We made like
- 18:13Speaker 2: forty short films. We we And then what happened was
- 18:17Speaker 2: he was really he left.
- 18:18Speaker 5: Me to go to college and I was all alone.
- 18:20Speaker 2: No, he was really, he was really he was really
- 18:22Speaker 2: talented with editing. So what happens. We created the story
- 18:25Speaker 2: kind of together, we directed it kind of together. We
- 18:27Speaker 2: started and then he was then I would go home
- 18:29Speaker 2: and all night he'd stay up and edit these things,
- 18:31Speaker 2: which in the old days you had a.
- 18:33Speaker 7: Kind of scotch tape machine. It was horrible and all
- 18:36Speaker 7: that stuffy. So he made these films into really cool
- 18:39Speaker 7: and it was really fun. And then I went off
- 18:40Speaker 7: to film school. He then came to the same film
- 18:43Speaker 7: school in New York, and then we stayed in our friends.
- 18:47Speaker 1: That's okay, you know. So it's not for everybody.
- 18:53Speaker 5: I have struggling problem with authority figures.
- 18:55Speaker 2: That's understanding.
- 18:56Speaker 1: You don't like being told what to do.
- 18:58Speaker 2: That's why he's a director. That's why he's a director.
- 19:01Speaker 1: Oh so he holds all. Yeah, he Well, speaking of
- 19:04Speaker 1: being a director, you made your directorial debut with the
- 19:10Speaker 1: film Out of Death that I was in Lucky You
- 19:15Speaker 1: let's talk.
- 19:15Speaker 2: Let's let's pause there. So Lala was six months pregnant,
- 19:19Speaker 2: five five months pregnant when she left to Puerto Rico
- 19:23Speaker 2: to do a movie. And now here's the thing. The
- 19:25Speaker 2: movie had it started on time and wrapped on time,
- 19:29Speaker 2: not due to a COVID event. You would have been
- 19:31Speaker 2: in and out in just a couple of weeks, right,
- 19:33Speaker 2: But because it got shut down for COVID.
- 19:35Speaker 1: Was there for a month, for freaking months.
- 19:38Speaker 2: So here's the thing. I'm at home, I'm working in
- 19:42Speaker 2: the office, you know, getting ready for the next movie.
- 19:44Speaker 2: I'm preparing, and Lala is calling me in isolation in
- 19:48Speaker 2: her hotel room. It's not funny. It's not funny. It's
- 19:53Speaker 2: not funny. It's serious at.
- 19:54Speaker 1: The time, right, but now looking back, everyone's healthy and safe.
- 19:57Speaker 1: We can laugh about it.
- 19:58Speaker 2: Yes, and by the way, were false positives, so it
- 20:02Speaker 2: wasn't even it wasn't even a real COVID event in
- 20:04Speaker 2: this particular situation. But Laala's calling me saying, I'm gonna
- 20:09Speaker 2: get out a fucking plane.
- 20:11Speaker 1: I was like, I'm aborting this mission.
- 20:13Speaker 3: Okay.
- 20:13Speaker 1: So the film starts, well.
- 20:16Speaker 5: You know what happened was is that this movie was
- 20:18Speaker 5: supposed to go in April. Yes, and that's you were
- 20:21Speaker 5: like one month pregnant or something like that at that point. Yeah,
- 20:24Speaker 5: you weren't even pregnant, Juni.
- 20:26Speaker 2: You found out.
- 20:27Speaker 1: We found out we were pregnant July. So if it
- 20:30Speaker 1: was supposed to go in the April.
- 20:32Speaker 2: You weren't pregnant. That's right now, I wasn't, okay, So
- 20:35Speaker 2: there are a lot of push start dates. There were
- 20:36Speaker 2: a lot of issues COVID related events.
- 20:39Speaker 1: You know that they treat false positives the same as
- 20:43Speaker 1: a positive. They don't care if it comes back right.
- 20:45Speaker 2: So we get we get a false positive, we have
- 20:47Speaker 2: to shut the movie down, and we have to retest,
- 20:49Speaker 2: and we have to trace and do all these things.
- 20:51Speaker 2: And in the end, nobody had COVID in this in
- 20:53Speaker 2: this situation, but it's still pushed the movie back two weeks.
- 20:56Speaker 2: So now Lala gets on set. This is the part
- 20:58Speaker 2: I like to hear it.
- 20:59Speaker 1: So as I'm waiting, I'm becoming progressively more hormonially angry.
- 21:05Speaker 2: Tell pregnant.
- 21:07Speaker 1: Tell us from your perspective.
- 21:08Speaker 2: Tell us from your perspective, how well I was on
- 21:11Speaker 2: some days, on hers especially.
- 21:13Speaker 1: I don't want you to hold back.
- 21:14Speaker 2: Oh wow, this is going to be good, because I
- 21:16Speaker 2: haven't even heard this.
- 21:17Speaker 5: No, I mean we were I think we had. We
- 21:19Speaker 5: had a couple of you know, moments I'd say no, no,
- 21:22Speaker 5: give us.
- 21:22Speaker 2: Some specific I want to hear what that means as
- 21:25Speaker 2: a director, what is a specific moment?
- 21:27Speaker 5: Well, no, I mean i'd say, you know, we were
- 21:32Speaker 5: the first one I think was when we were when
- 21:33Speaker 5: I was trying to get a couple of rehearsals in
- 21:35Speaker 5: early on. We were trying to block out some stuff.
- 21:36Speaker 5: I was trying to do some blocking and had some
- 21:39Speaker 5: opinions about doing blocking.
- 21:40Speaker 2: Give us our opinions. What were they?
- 21:41Speaker 5: She said, I don't really know why. She said, I
- 21:45Speaker 5: don't know why we're doing blocking right now. I wish
- 21:47Speaker 5: you'd be doing that on set. I've never had to
- 21:49Speaker 5: do blocking in front of We.
- 21:51Speaker 1: Were in a ballroom rehearsal.
- 21:54Speaker 2: What do you mean.
- 21:55Speaker 1: I don't think we need to rehearse like that. Put
- 21:58Speaker 1: me on set, show me from point A to point B,
- 22:01Speaker 1: and I'll.
- 22:01Speaker 5: Tell you do I'll tell you what. That day, though,
- 22:03Speaker 5: we did get on set and do that scene because
- 22:05Speaker 5: we blocked it. I was like, you know, the guys
- 22:06Speaker 5: know what to do. Remember we're here, here, here, and
- 22:08Speaker 5: we moved fast.
- 22:09Speaker 2: So it did we did.
- 22:10Speaker 5: It did help them.
- 22:11Speaker 1: By the way, I never would have been like I
- 22:14Speaker 1: would have never had I not been so angry and hormonal,
- 22:17Speaker 1: I would have been like, fuck it, let's do a
- 22:19Speaker 1: million rehearsals.
- 22:20Speaker 5: Well, remember you were also in pain. So you were
- 22:22Speaker 5: dealing with the saiata that was it's hard to do
- 22:27Speaker 5: anything when you're in pain.
- 22:28Speaker 1: I love that Mic is being so friendly because if
- 22:31Speaker 1: I were in his place, I would say you were
- 22:33Speaker 1: a nightmare, and you were.
- 22:36Speaker 2: First of all, you've done a lot of movies. I
- 22:38Speaker 2: know a lot of the producers you've worked with and
- 22:40Speaker 2: directors that you've done since, you know, in the last
- 22:42Speaker 2: five years, and every single director and every single producer
- 22:47Speaker 2: gives you rave reviews. So I knew that in Mike
- 22:49Speaker 2: Mike's Smart.
- 22:50Speaker 5: I was and I was a fancast. I mean I
- 22:52Speaker 5: was already a fan of yours from you know, the
- 22:53Speaker 5: row too. I thought you did a great job. Was
- 22:56Speaker 5: so that was the first time actually seeing you do
- 22:58Speaker 5: a floral lead kind of leading to the thing, and
- 23:01Speaker 5: I thought you were great. So for me, it was
- 23:03Speaker 5: just like, let's just have fun with this, and I
- 23:05Speaker 5: know you're going to do really well. I just, you know,
- 23:09Speaker 5: we just.
- 23:11Speaker 2: Time because she would call me, You call me and say,
- 23:15Speaker 2: you know, like I just should be home right now.
- 23:16Speaker 2: I should be home. She should be home, you know,
- 23:18Speaker 2: nesting and getting ready. But the thing was, you know,
- 23:21Speaker 2: you're the kind of person in law when you commit
- 23:23Speaker 2: to something, you never back out. So I know, you
- 23:27Speaker 2: you know, you're somebody wants to finish and see it
- 23:29Speaker 2: through and you didn't want to let anybody down. It
- 23:31Speaker 2: was unfortunately the movie got pushed so many times that
- 23:33Speaker 2: it just ran into your practice.
- 23:35Speaker 1: Sciatic nerves did not add. But I'm so grateful that
- 23:40Speaker 1: it was Mike as the director because if it would
- 23:42Speaker 1: have been someone else, family, it was like family, And
- 23:45Speaker 1: I felt, really.
- 23:46Speaker 5: She's a double edged story because then you can kind
- 23:47Speaker 5: of you know, you yell at your brother.
- 23:49Speaker 2: You know what I mean.
- 23:50Speaker 5: It's yeah, exactly, it's a little bit of a double
- 23:53Speaker 5: edged story. But I will say that it was hard.
- 23:55Speaker 5: It was she had to do a lot of physical
- 23:57Speaker 5: stuff and should have like lay down on the grass
- 23:59Speaker 5: for you know, in a weird position for potent. She's
- 24:02Speaker 5: dead for like a half an hour while another guy's
- 24:04Speaker 5: doing a scene that she's not even really she's just
- 24:06Speaker 5: in the background. So it was a lot. There was
- 24:08Speaker 5: a lot of things there that were you know, a
- 24:09Speaker 5: little you know, tricky, and and you know, we you know,
- 24:14Speaker 5: we were just there was a lot of pressure and
- 24:16Speaker 5: I think that you know, you did, you did your
- 24:18Speaker 5: best to keep it together and and I think that,
- 24:20Speaker 5: you know, because you were pregnant, because of you having
- 24:22Speaker 5: the pain, I gave you a hall pass on that one.
- 24:24Speaker 1: Well, I appreciate that.
- 24:25Speaker 5: And I think still and I still think you crushed it.
- 24:27Speaker 5: I think you did a great job and everybody loves
- 24:28Speaker 5: you in the movie.
- 24:29Speaker 1: I really like the movie. So now that so Mike
- 24:32Speaker 1: keeps saying that he wants me to watch it. I
- 24:33Speaker 1: haven't ever watched a movie that I have been a
- 24:36Speaker 1: part of. I watched the row.
- 24:39Speaker 5: We're sitting in the premiere of the movie.
- 24:42Speaker 1: And then it kind of it kind of ended there.
- 24:44Speaker 1: I just I don't I don't enjoy it makes Yeah,
- 24:49Speaker 1: it makes me very uncomfortable because I critique myself like
- 24:51Speaker 1: I could have done so much better, and then it's
- 24:54Speaker 1: not productive. It's not a productive thing.
- 24:56Speaker 5: You couldn't have done any better than you've done this way.
- 24:58Speaker 1: Okay, let me, let me, let me and it hit
- 25:00Speaker 1: number six on iTunes, which is great war but who's
- 25:03Speaker 1: going four?
- 25:03Speaker 3: Wow?
- 25:04Speaker 2: See I was number three and number two, But hold on, okay,
- 25:09Speaker 2: so let's just let's so let's talk about so now
- 25:12Speaker 2: Mike directly, that's right. So, now Mike directs Out of
- 25:15Speaker 2: Death and I direct Midnight in the Switchgrass. And here's
- 25:21Speaker 2: the funny thing. So both of us are I'm fifty,
- 25:24Speaker 2: he's almost fifty. We both decide to go and direct
- 25:28Speaker 2: our first features. I do mine and then get shut
- 25:31Speaker 2: down in the Pandemic and that it takes a long
- 25:32Speaker 2: time to remount it. You start yours after and when
- 25:35Speaker 2: I'm in post and I'm actually shooting my next movie
- 25:37Speaker 2: that I'm directing. And but here's the irony of it all.
- 25:41Speaker 2: We both grew up with the love of film. We
- 25:43Speaker 2: both are passionate filmmakers. We both waited decades to make
- 25:47Speaker 2: the decision that we're ready to direct. What are the chances?
- 25:50Speaker 2: What are the chances? This is? This is the craziest thing.
- 25:53Speaker 2: Mike brought this up to me, and at first I
- 25:54Speaker 2: was a whatever, man, that's kind of weird, But then
- 25:56Speaker 2: I really think about it. What are the chances that
- 25:58Speaker 2: we both have a movie come out.
- 26:00Speaker 8: One that started almost almost a year, almost the year
- 26:04Speaker 8: before mine because it gets ship down down, and then
- 26:06Speaker 8: his he did nine months later, whatever, And then they
- 26:09Speaker 8: both come out with two different studios within seven days
- 26:13Speaker 8: of each other. I'll and we're in the top ten together,
- 26:16Speaker 8: and then we're competing for the spots.
- 26:20Speaker 1: Chances are very low.
- 26:22Speaker 3: It's one in a trillion, very low.
- 26:25Speaker 2: It's almost near and possible. And then here's the crazy part.
- 26:29Speaker 2: I remember when we're both at night Sunes. My movie
- 26:31Speaker 2: came out on Friday. He was already creeping up to
- 26:34Speaker 2: the top five and he was in at four at
- 26:35Speaker 2: this moment, and then I came in at like number eight,
- 26:38Speaker 2: and when we first launched, and then he starts dropping
- 26:41Speaker 2: down because he's already been out and open. He's starting
- 26:43Speaker 2: to go and.
- 26:43Speaker 5: Then I'm getting the daily the minute by minute update.
- 26:47Speaker 5: I'm coming up for you.
- 26:48Speaker 2: Yeah, from eight, and I go to six and then
- 26:51Speaker 2: he goes to five and go, I'm close, but I
- 26:54Speaker 2: don't know if we're ever going to get there because
- 26:55Speaker 2: I have no idea. And then he hits six and
- 26:57Speaker 2: I go to five and I go screenshot right on
- 26:59Speaker 2: the ends Instagram. Best friends.
- 27:01Speaker 3: We made movies that get You're so course.
- 27:03Speaker 5: He waited until he got the five spot and I
- 27:05Speaker 5: was down at six.
- 27:07Speaker 1: That's your Randall Mills, and.
- 27:08Speaker 5: He goes, it's crazy when your best friend is number
- 27:10Speaker 5: six and your number five and the iTunes charts.
- 27:13Speaker 1: You know, what's crazy.
- 27:14Speaker 2: I gave you a shoutout.
- 27:15Speaker 1: You're welcome, Oh a shout out.
- 27:17Speaker 2: Yeah, I'll give me a shout out. But then I got
- 27:21Speaker 2: to three and I was really excited. But here's the thing.
- 27:23Speaker 2: I joke around with the competition, But the truth is,
- 27:26Speaker 2: we both started movies together. We both loved film, and
- 27:29Speaker 2: we both waited that diverged in our past to do.
- 27:31Speaker 5: You produced, it was acting, and you know, and you
- 27:35Speaker 5: were actually maybe considering directing when you went to film school.
- 27:39Speaker 2: No, I didn't. I never want anything to do with
- 27:40Speaker 2: directing until I was up until I until I was
- 27:43Speaker 2: maybe ten years ago, I started thinking about it. I
- 27:45Speaker 2: just never thought I would ever me too.
- 27:48Speaker 1: I have a question for both of you now that
- 27:50Speaker 1: you have both directed. Mike, what do you feel was
- 27:57Speaker 1: one thing that you thought directing would to be like
- 28:00Speaker 1: that kind of shocked you that it wasn't that way.
- 28:04Speaker 5: What was the unexpected aspect of directing?
- 28:07Speaker 1: Yep?
- 28:08Speaker 5: I think you know, I think a lot of directing
- 28:12Speaker 5: that they don't teach you is you know how to
- 28:14Speaker 5: how to deal with people and how to how to
- 28:16Speaker 5: try to make sure that you're protecting your vision but
- 28:20Speaker 5: also respecting other people's artistic uh you know, freedom really
- 28:26Speaker 5: so they can really kind of do what they do.
- 28:28Speaker 5: I think I think when we were doing our when
- 28:30Speaker 5: we were doing our stuff, and you know, I went,
- 28:32Speaker 5: I came into it with this like really sharp vision
- 28:34Speaker 5: of what I wanted, which I think is good. But
- 28:35Speaker 5: then you've got to kind of throw it away and
- 28:37Speaker 5: let people do what they do. And then later on
- 28:40Speaker 5: in the post production process, you're like you watch stuff
- 28:43Speaker 5: and you're like, oh, okay, that kind of worked and
- 28:45Speaker 5: and that was really cool. So I think that yeah,
- 28:48Speaker 5: just being able to work with different personalities and different
- 28:51Speaker 5: and different people who didn't need different things, right. They
- 28:54Speaker 5: think every every actor is a little bit different. Some
- 28:56Speaker 5: actors really want to be told what to do and
- 28:58Speaker 5: where to be and how to do and and other
- 29:00Speaker 5: people are kind of the opposite. And there's just a
- 29:02Speaker 5: lot of like different ways that methods that people use
- 29:05Speaker 5: to be able to do their thing. And and I
- 29:07Speaker 5: you know, you don't know that until you go in
- 29:09Speaker 5: and start and start working.
- 29:10Speaker 1: With people teaching that and correct me if this wasn't
- 29:14Speaker 1: how it really was. But you know, you're kind of,
- 29:17Speaker 1: you know, the head of the entire production. So it's
- 29:20Speaker 1: not even just the actors that you have to worry
- 29:23Speaker 1: about and their you know, creative mindset and like you said, freedom,
- 29:28Speaker 1: but you have other people on set that you're also
- 29:31Speaker 1: in charge of. Was that kind of a shock that
- 29:33Speaker 1: it was like, Wow, I'm really running this entire show?
- 29:37Speaker 2: It was crazy.
- 29:38Speaker 5: Actually have a video of myself that I did a
- 29:39Speaker 5: little video diary, and I'm like, I have this is
- 29:41Speaker 5: I'm sneaking away right now because I haven't had like
- 29:44Speaker 5: five minutes to be able to just without somebody running
- 29:46Speaker 5: up and sing a question. I said, I guarantee you
- 29:48Speaker 5: in the next five seconds, somebody calls my name and
- 29:50Speaker 5: I literally five seconds later Mike, Where's Mike?
- 29:52Speaker 2: Where's Mike?
- 29:53Speaker 1: Right?
- 29:53Speaker 5: So that was new to me and having that, you know,
- 29:56Speaker 5: and having to I mean you you're used to that,
- 29:59Speaker 5: because I'm sure it's just NonStop.
- 30:01Speaker 1: I don't think so. I think it was a completely
- 30:03Speaker 1: different experience for you.
- 30:04Speaker 2: Right from what you said, I think that part of
- 30:06Speaker 2: it wasn't as shocking.
- 30:08Speaker 1: The Okay, so for you, same question, what was like,
- 30:12Speaker 1: what was the unexpected for you that you maybe had
- 30:15Speaker 1: a vision in your head of what directing consisted of,
- 30:18Speaker 1: and how was it different?
- 30:21Speaker 2: I think for me. Uh was was just the intensity
- 30:26Speaker 2: of every minute, you know, Like as a producer, I
- 30:29Speaker 2: come on and I have to solve big problems, the
- 30:32Speaker 2: major problems, you know, like oh we're over schedule, where
- 30:35Speaker 2: we lost the location and actors sick, you know whatever,
- 30:39Speaker 2: the kind of big picture items, big ticket items, right
- 30:42Speaker 2: whereas a director you're solving every little little detail. And
- 30:45Speaker 2: so for me, I just wasn't used to the constant
- 30:49Speaker 2: every second. And here's the big takeaway. I went into
- 30:54Speaker 2: directing just with an open mind. Even though I've produced
- 30:56Speaker 2: over one hundred films and I've been on many sets,
- 30:59Speaker 2: I went in not expecting anything. I just said, I
- 31:02Speaker 2: don't know what this is going to be, Like I
- 31:04Speaker 2: might hate it, I might love it, but I don't know.
- 31:06Speaker 2: And as you know, Babe, as I told you every
- 31:08Speaker 2: day I called you, I was so excited about every
- 31:10Speaker 2: part of it. But I think for me, the part
- 31:13Speaker 2: that I that I wasn't ready for was as a producer.
- 31:18Speaker 2: After two hours, if I'm ready to go to the
- 31:20Speaker 2: hotel and go play pickleball, you can leave. If I
- 31:23Speaker 2: want to go, if I want to go back to
- 31:24Speaker 2: LA and see my kids or see you, law, I
- 31:27Speaker 2: get on the plane and I come, I say on Thursday,
- 31:29Speaker 2: I'll be home when you're three weeks, five weeks, six
- 31:32Speaker 2: weeks in, and you're like, I'm fucking tired, and I
- 31:35Speaker 2: want to go home to my house, and I want
- 31:37Speaker 2: to you know, I want to go to the hotel.
- 31:38Speaker 1: Not enough.
- 31:39Speaker 2: So anyway, there was a day where I didn't feel
- 31:41Speaker 2: well well, I only had a few hours of sleep,
- 31:42Speaker 2: and I was super fatigued and I was dehydrated, and
- 31:45Speaker 2: I went on set and you don't have a choice.
- 31:46Speaker 2: You don't get to let people down when you're in there.
- 31:48Speaker 1: So I think that you can't say, like today I
- 31:50Speaker 1: need to sleep in a little.
- 31:51Speaker 2: Yeah, because every minute counts on a movie set, and
- 31:54Speaker 2: every dollar means something. And after being a producer for
- 31:57Speaker 2: so many years, I have such respect for that part
- 31:59Speaker 2: of it that I wouldn't do that. And I remember,
- 32:01Speaker 2: this is this is the best moment I had as
- 32:03Speaker 2: a I mean not the best one. This is the
- 32:05Speaker 2: moment where where the producer produced me for the first
- 32:09Speaker 2: time in my career. Because I do the producing and
- 32:11Speaker 2: I produce directors. One of my producers, I was supposed
- 32:15Speaker 2: to be there at eight o'clock in the morning and
- 32:16Speaker 2: I gotten up at six not feeling well, and he
- 32:19Speaker 2: knocks on my door. He comes in and he's like,
- 32:21Speaker 2: all right, you ready to go? And I was like,
- 32:23Speaker 2: oh my god, they're sending somebody in to bring me
- 32:25Speaker 2: because they know that I told him I don't feel well.
- 32:27Speaker 2: Can We pushed it a couple hours and he's like,
- 32:30Speaker 2: come on, I got you bagel, I got your orange juice,
- 32:32Speaker 2: I got you some vitamins, I got you emergency. We're going,
- 32:35Speaker 2: let's go. And I said, no, no, no, no, no, I
- 32:36Speaker 2: don't feel I don't feel great. He's like, no, no, it's great.
- 32:38Speaker 2: You're gonna go. We're gonna set the shot. Then you
- 32:40Speaker 2: go on your trailer. You're gonna rest for an hour,
- 32:42Speaker 2: and then I'm bringing back on set. We're gonna keep going.
- 32:44Speaker 2: And I'm like, oh my god, I'm getting produced. It's
- 32:46Speaker 2: like it's like what I've done right, and you know,
- 32:49Speaker 2: because you want so It's just like those moments were
- 32:51Speaker 2: so surreal for me, because that's what I did for
- 32:54Speaker 2: twenty plus years, you know, with other directors, and so
- 32:57Speaker 2: I think that was new to me and not having
- 32:59Speaker 2: that that exit where I could just say I'm tired
- 33:02Speaker 2: and I want to I've worked, you know, twenty two
- 33:05Speaker 2: days straight. I haven't had a day off, and I
- 33:06Speaker 2: want to just go sleep. There's no option for that.
- 33:09Speaker 2: And so I think for me that that was that
- 33:11Speaker 2: was something. But then again, the adrenaline and the excitement
- 33:14Speaker 2: and the high mind as you.
- 33:15Speaker 1: Get on there's nothing like you forget your fatigued.
- 33:18Speaker 2: Yeah, there's there's no magic that when you walk onto
- 33:20Speaker 2: a set and you get to create, for me with
- 33:23Speaker 2: actors and talk about a scene and they challenge you.
- 33:27Speaker 2: You know, actors will say, well, why, why why are
- 33:29Speaker 2: you making this decision? I don't necessarily agree that my
- 33:32Speaker 2: character would do. And I like that part of it.
- 33:34Speaker 2: I enjoy being pushed and that and that's a real artist.
- 33:37Speaker 2: You know, actors who are who are incredible arts, They
- 33:40Speaker 2: are incredible artists, and they want to be challenged. They
- 33:42Speaker 2: want to be pushed, they want answers, and if they
- 33:44Speaker 2: don't believe what you're what you're telling them right, then
- 33:48Speaker 2: you've got to find a way to convince them that
- 33:50Speaker 2: that is the right choice for that character. And if not,
- 33:52Speaker 2: you got to be open to their choice. And does
- 33:54Speaker 2: it not? Does it does? Sometimes? What they say, you know,
- 33:57Speaker 2: when they give me ideas. I'm like, I didn't see that.
- 34:00Speaker 2: You know, I'm open to that. Let's try it that
- 34:01Speaker 2: way too. So I enjoy that collaborative process. I enjoy
- 34:05Speaker 2: really really creating, collaborating on an intimate level right on set,
- 34:10Speaker 2: in the moment, and when the magic works, Mike, I mean,
- 34:13Speaker 2: I think that there's no bigger high for me. You
- 34:15Speaker 2: know that that's it. That's where I found that level,
- 34:18Speaker 2: reminding me when I first started producing films. You know,
- 34:20Speaker 2: it's all brand new.
- 34:21Speaker 1: And yeah and all that.
- 34:23Speaker 5: So yeah, all right, I like, let's throw this back
- 34:25Speaker 5: to you now.
- 34:28Speaker 2: A quick break before we go to along.
- 34:29Speaker 1: I've never directed anything.
- 34:32Speaker 2: You direct me every day. Okay, all right, We're gonna
- 34:34Speaker 2: take quick break and then and then you can interview
- 34:36Speaker 2: the law. We'll be right back.
- 34:41Speaker 1: We are back. I really loved hearing your guys' little
- 34:46Speaker 1: story of how you came to be and about you
- 34:49Speaker 1: guys being.
- 34:49Speaker 5: The odds of us being friends for this long and
- 34:52Speaker 5: working together for this long. How many people do you
- 34:56Speaker 5: know that have been friends and working together six thirty something?
- 35:02Speaker 1: Three of my best friends I've known for.
- 35:05Speaker 2: Not thirty five years, thirty five So no, but I
- 35:09Speaker 2: in the same field, same field. We've been working together
- 35:12Speaker 2: for two decades.
- 35:14Speaker 1: No, it's amazing, it's amazing. It's very sweet. And you know,
- 35:18Speaker 1: I'm going to be honest. I know both of you,
- 35:19Speaker 1: and neither of you are super easy to deal with.
- 35:22Speaker 1: So the fact that you I.
- 35:23Speaker 2: Am a cakewalk, I resent that.
- 35:25Speaker 1: I'm just saying yeah, no, I wouldn't be able to
- 35:29Speaker 1: say it cool.
- 35:30Speaker 5: So I'm going to throw you something at you because
- 35:32Speaker 5: I just want to know in terms of because I
- 35:33Speaker 5: mean you you do your character. I guess I don't
- 35:36Speaker 5: know if it's I'm not a big reality show person,
- 35:38Speaker 5: so I don't watch the shows and I don't watch
- 35:40Speaker 5: the show, but I know that Randy was a huge
- 35:42Speaker 5: fan of vander Pump forever, and I know that you
- 35:45Speaker 5: are amazing in it and everybody loves you. What's the
- 35:49Speaker 5: Is it a persona or is it you? Or what's
- 35:52Speaker 5: the deal there?
- 35:53Speaker 1: I love that question because a lot of people do
- 35:55Speaker 1: think like you. This has to be scripted because no
- 35:59Speaker 1: one in their right frame of mind would act this way.
- 36:03Speaker 1: I think the difference between being on this show there's.
- 36:09Speaker 5: Like versus acting.
- 36:10Speaker 1: There's right acting. You know, you hand me a script
- 36:14Speaker 1: and I get to be very creative with it and spendah.
- 36:18Speaker 1: Of course I go to a coach, but when I
- 36:21Speaker 1: step onto Vanner pump rules and I'm being myself. You know,
- 36:25Speaker 1: the only difficult part is you don't get to say
- 36:28Speaker 1: this isn't the right time or place, you know, because
- 36:33Speaker 1: that's what we do. We feel all of our feelings
- 36:36Speaker 1: and we express them. So there's no gray area you're
- 36:38Speaker 1: black or you're white. And that it's so crazy because
- 36:42Speaker 1: my mom always told me as a child, like, please
- 36:45Speaker 1: find the gray area in life. I was always very intense.
- 36:48Speaker 1: It was always one way or another and it couldn't
- 36:51Speaker 1: be in between. And who knew that that would make
- 36:54Speaker 1: a reality TV personality.
- 36:57Speaker 6: You know.
- 36:57Speaker 1: It's like if I am feeling it and thinking it,
- 37:00Speaker 1: then I say it, and sometimes it's you.
- 37:04Speaker 5: It's yeah, and apparently it works.
- 37:07Speaker 2: Listen when I want when I see you, because I
- 37:09Speaker 2: now sometimes around while you're filming, you know, nothing changes.
- 37:14Speaker 2: I mean, you guys are who you are. I know
- 37:16Speaker 2: you guys. Why the camera's rolling, I know you guys
- 37:18Speaker 2: when we're on vacation. It is who you guys are.
- 37:21Speaker 2: Nothing is different. The only thing that that happens is
- 37:25Speaker 2: you guys are confronting and dealing with your inner friendships
- 37:31Speaker 2: right there in the world gets to watched.
- 37:33Speaker 5: But I mean, imagine it's harder doing what you do
- 37:37Speaker 5: than being on a screen, you know, acting, where you
- 37:39Speaker 5: get to just jump out and be anybody. I mean,
- 37:41Speaker 5: you have to be vulnerable, and I mean you're you're
- 37:43Speaker 5: on You're on the show now too, So I mean,
- 37:45Speaker 5: what does it feel like when you're.
- 37:46Speaker 2: Just, oh, well, for me, it's never going to be
- 37:48Speaker 2: it's for her. It's amazing when sometimes I sit there,
- 37:51Speaker 2: we joke about it while and I like, I'll be
- 37:53Speaker 2: sitting at a dinner table why they're filming, and they're
- 37:55Speaker 2: having like these conversations or these intense conversations, and I
- 37:59Speaker 2: feel like I'm sitting on my couch watching the show
- 38:02Speaker 2: because I'm never going to be comfortable with the camera
- 38:04Speaker 2: pointed at me. It's not real.
- 38:05Speaker 1: You're behind the scenes guy, You're never going to feel
- 38:08Speaker 1: comfortable about opening up.
- 38:09Speaker 2: It's not it's not my thing. I respect that, but
- 38:13Speaker 2: but but watching them, it's like they don't even know
- 38:17Speaker 2: the cameras are there. They are just themselves, whether they
- 38:20Speaker 2: are getting along or not getting along. And that's why
- 38:23Speaker 2: I say, like to do what they do and be
- 38:26Speaker 2: who they really are. They're the real selves. They're not
- 38:28Speaker 2: when the cameras start rolling you would think like, oh,
- 38:31Speaker 2: they're gonna put on a show. Now it's like I'm
- 38:33Speaker 2: sitting there watching they are exactly.
- 38:35Speaker 1: Just organically happens. And the thing is with this group.
- 38:38Speaker 2: Is and they are friends. You get the other thing
- 38:40Speaker 2: I want to say, Mike, that that most people don't know,
- 38:42Speaker 2: and I'm sorry to cut you off. The thing that
- 38:44Speaker 2: people don't know is this group they are really friends.
- 38:47Speaker 2: I've met Laala, you know, years and years ago, and
- 38:50Speaker 2: I've known every one of these people that are on
- 38:52Speaker 2: the show from the day I met you Loss. I mean,
- 38:54Speaker 2: they've been in your life. Yeah, whether they're whether the
- 38:57Speaker 2: cameras are rolling or they're vacationing with no cameras. They
- 39:01Speaker 2: are true friends. This group, you know.
- 39:03Speaker 1: Yeah, and there are times where we have drama and
- 39:05Speaker 1: I'm like, God, when vander Palms love to catch this
- 39:08Speaker 1: right now, you know, like it just it never changes.
- 39:11Speaker 1: But it's almost like the ultimate therapy because you're constantly
- 39:15Speaker 1: spewing your feelings and at the end of the day,
- 39:17Speaker 1: you sometimes they we make each other better and other
- 39:22Speaker 1: times we come to the understanding where it's like we're
- 39:25Speaker 1: going to disagree on this, and is it going to
- 39:27Speaker 1: end a friendship or do we just like own that
- 39:30Speaker 1: to who this person is, This is who I am,
- 39:32Speaker 1: and we're gonna move on and just embrace the fact
- 39:34Speaker 1: that we disagree on this. You know, it's like I
- 39:36Speaker 1: feel like I have therapy, especially in our interviews.
- 39:39Speaker 5: Do you I mean, if you if you have a
- 39:41Speaker 5: problem watching yourself in films, do you watch yourself on
- 39:44Speaker 5: this day?
- 39:44Speaker 1: They have to, They have to think they have to
- 39:46Speaker 1: because then we go into a reunion where we have
- 39:49Speaker 1: to talk about all of our behavior and things like that.
- 39:52Speaker 2: So they therefore like it's part they have to watch
- 39:55Speaker 2: each episode. But are you it's.
- 39:56Speaker 5: Critical of yourself when you watch it, when you watch
- 39:58Speaker 5: yourself being yourself?
- 40:00Speaker 2: Or no, I think you're less critical.
- 40:02Speaker 1: I'm way less critical who you are? Right. It's it's
- 40:05Speaker 1: like for me doing vander Pump, it's not an I
- 40:09Speaker 1: wouldn't say it's an art. You know, like when I
- 40:12Speaker 1: go and I film a movie, you know, I really
- 40:17Speaker 1: incubate that character and try to take it on as
- 40:20Speaker 1: my own. And if I feel like that's going to
- 40:23Speaker 1: be judged as it not being good enough. I take
- 40:26Speaker 1: it more personally, I guess because I also feel like
- 40:30Speaker 1: I let the roll down, whereas like if on TV,
- 40:33Speaker 1: if someone's judging me, it's like, fuck you, this is me,
- 40:35Speaker 1: like take it early, own care.
- 40:37Speaker 2: Yeah, but I think that's easier. Like if you're on
- 40:39Speaker 2: a reality show like you are, people are judging, they're what,
- 40:42Speaker 2: they're judging who you are as a person. You know
- 40:44Speaker 2: who you are.
- 40:45Speaker 1: I don't know why that's easier for me to digest.
- 40:48Speaker 1: It's easier for me to digest them coming for me
- 40:53Speaker 1: as a human rather than them coming for like a
- 40:55Speaker 1: character what I'm putting on.
- 40:57Speaker 2: I don't think you could do the job. Like that's why,
- 40:59Speaker 2: like when people like I don't think you can be
- 41:01Speaker 2: in the position you're in and be so like by
- 41:05Speaker 2: a comment you know, shook, as you say, like, I
- 41:09Speaker 2: think it would be hard to do what you do.
- 41:11Speaker 2: And I think you guys have to build up a
- 41:12Speaker 2: certain kind of tolerance for people you know coming for
- 41:16Speaker 2: you on reality Whereas in a movie you work hard
- 41:19Speaker 2: and inhibit a role and interpret a role, and then
- 41:23Speaker 2: you put it out there and then people say, oh, well,
- 41:25Speaker 2: you didn't do a good job. That's that's hard because
- 41:28Speaker 2: it's like your artistic work.
- 41:29Speaker 1: Correct.
- 41:30Speaker 2: So as as a reality star, you're being real, You're
- 41:33Speaker 2: just being who you are. So I don't think you
- 41:35Speaker 2: get as shaken.
- 41:36Speaker 1: Now, you know, it's not at all.
- 41:38Speaker 5: Well, I think you did a great job on the
- 41:40Speaker 5: on the movie. And if you haven't seen Out of Death,
- 41:42Speaker 5: go check it out. It's available on Amazon. Watch La
- 41:45Speaker 5: La because she's is really fun and amazing and there's
- 41:48Speaker 5: you know, there's.
- 41:49Speaker 1: A lot, a lot of stuff with that role.
- 41:52Speaker 2: I'm proud of both of you guys. You guys both
- 41:53Speaker 2: did a great job. And Mike's getting ready to go
- 41:55Speaker 2: direct another movie in October.
- 42:00Speaker 5: I just signed my contract with Yes Off you go off,
- 42:04Speaker 5: You go off, you go Thank you, thank you for
- 42:07Speaker 5: the opportunity.
- 42:08Speaker 1: Okay, so before we sign off, Mikey, thanks for.
- 42:11Speaker 2: Joining me, Thanks for having thanks for coming.
- 42:13Speaker 5: Thanks guys, thanks for having me. Appreciate it.
- 42:14Speaker 2: And by the way, Mike Burns's Instagram is Mike Burns.
- 42:18Speaker 2: There you go follow him and check out his latest work.
- 42:21Speaker 1: Okay, so we have a few voicemails that I want
- 42:25Speaker 1: to answer. I love voicemails.
- 42:27Speaker 9: Hi, Lala and Randall, It's Gabby and Erica from New
- 42:30Speaker 9: Mexico and we love your show, and we our question
- 42:34Speaker 9: is for Randall, and our question is have you read
- 42:38Speaker 9: Laala's entire book? You just wanted to know and if
- 42:41Speaker 9: you sat down and read it, we love you guys.
- 42:44Speaker 2: My answer is, by no, I read what Lala wanted
- 42:49Speaker 2: to to. I think that was the safest move for me.
- 42:52Speaker 2: When Lala was writing the book, I really really respected
- 42:56Speaker 2: the fact that she's going to be a first time author.
- 42:58Speaker 2: When she came to me and said, I'm going to
- 43:00Speaker 2: write a book on myself, on my life, and you know,
- 43:04Speaker 2: I was very supportive and I said, is it you know,
- 43:07Speaker 2: you know, just you know, I wanted to kind of
- 43:09Speaker 2: let her have her moment. I didn't. I felt like
- 43:12Speaker 2: if I read it why she was writing it and
- 43:14Speaker 2: the drafts that she had, I might, you know, get
- 43:17Speaker 2: a little shook. Yeah, I read. I read. She let me.
- 43:22Speaker 2: We talked about me reading the one chapter there's one
- 43:25Speaker 2: particular chapter and I don't, but there's one chapter I
- 43:28Speaker 2: did read, and I really I just said, okay, you know,
- 43:30Speaker 2: it's it's your voice, it's your it's your world. And
- 43:33Speaker 2: I think one of the things about our relationship that
- 43:35Speaker 2: we've always thrived on is we support one another and
- 43:38Speaker 2: everything we do, and I definitely support her in this book.
- 43:42Speaker 2: Are there things in the book that I would have
- 43:45Speaker 2: preferred she maybe left out? Sure? I mean, I definitely
- 43:48Speaker 2: don't think toothbrushes are necessary in the book.
- 43:52Speaker 1: So can I chime in on that real quick? Because
- 43:54Speaker 1: that was a big headline I've spoken about a lot,
- 43:58Speaker 1: especially in the show, and I'm going to say this
- 44:01Speaker 1: without getting emotional. The reason I chose to put things
- 44:05Speaker 1: like that in the book are because you know, I
- 44:08Speaker 1: was really struggling with addiction, and there were people when
- 44:12Speaker 1: I said that I came out as an alcoholic that
- 44:15Speaker 1: really looked at me like why, I don't get it.
- 44:18Speaker 1: And it was important for me to show the behavior
- 44:21Speaker 1: that I would display and things that I would do
- 44:24Speaker 1: when I was drinking. So even though it made for
- 44:27Speaker 1: an entertaining headline, it made for an entertaining story in
- 44:30Speaker 1: the book. It went way beyond that. Yeah, it was
- 44:33Speaker 1: like this, these are the things that I'm mortified about
- 44:37Speaker 1: that I would do when I would drink. Sorry, so
- 44:43Speaker 1: it's okay, I love you.
- 44:47Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean it was a dark time, you know,
- 44:49Speaker 2: it was a dark time, and you know, life's not
- 44:52Speaker 2: always what it's supposed to be, you know, you know,
- 44:54Speaker 2: I mean people don't know all the details, but you
- 44:57Speaker 2: you know, you struggle with addiction and then your father
- 45:00Speaker 2: passed away and then you know dark. So I'm very
- 45:04Speaker 2: proud of you at who you are today. And yeah,
- 45:06Speaker 2: I mean, you know, I think when I think, for me,
- 45:10Speaker 2: the best thing was just to support whatever you put
- 45:13Speaker 2: out because it was your words, your voice, and I
- 45:15Speaker 2: know I know behind what all that, why you were
- 45:17Speaker 2: trying to share that stuff. You know. Unfortunately, people and
- 45:21Speaker 2: headlines want things to you know, ay.
- 45:23Speaker 1: One, what's interesting to click on? How many people can
- 45:26Speaker 1: we get to read what I've just written? So I respect,
- 45:30Speaker 1: I respect the hustle and the game, right, but it
- 45:32Speaker 1: is important for me to tell you and everyone else
- 45:35Speaker 1: that that wasn't just so that it would make a
- 45:38Speaker 1: funny headline. This was a real life sickness that I'm
- 45:41Speaker 1: still battling every day. It will never be cured, and
- 45:45Speaker 1: it's important for me to be a sober human being.
- 45:47Speaker 1: Because I pulled some stupid shit.
- 45:51Speaker 3: There we go, Yeah, and you know what, that's that's life.
- 45:54Speaker 2: And at the end of the day, so I think
- 45:57Speaker 2: you know, I didn't read the book, but I read
- 46:01Speaker 2: things that Lallan wanted me to read, and that's.
- 46:03Speaker 1: That's kind of where it was published. Because I wasn't anything.
- 46:07Speaker 1: I like this next question.
- 46:09Speaker 9: Hi, Lala and Randall.
- 46:11Speaker 6: My name is Lauren. I live in the New York area.
- 46:14Speaker 6: I am a huge fan. You guys are killing it.
- 46:17Speaker 6: I wanted to ask the question regarding relationships. I've been
- 46:21Speaker 6: with my fiance now for ten years. We started dating
- 46:24Speaker 6: freshman year of college and throughout the pandemic. One thing
- 46:28Speaker 6: that we've really been working on is how to fight.
- 46:32Speaker 6: All couples are going to fight that eventually, you know,
- 46:35Speaker 6: you have to learn to fight the right way for you,
- 46:39Speaker 6: for your partner, and how everybody communicates differently. So was
- 46:44Speaker 6: wondering what you both would say your biggest tip for
- 46:48Speaker 6: couples would be regarding communication and regarding what you've learned
- 46:53Speaker 6: in terms of how what is the best way to
- 46:56Speaker 6: fight like all couples do. So keep up the great world.
- 47:00Speaker 6: So happy for you both for all the changes this
- 47:03Speaker 6: year and wishing you all the best things.
- 47:06Speaker 1: Who the second I like heard this boy smile, I
- 47:12Speaker 1: was like, I don't even think I know the answer,
- 47:14Speaker 1: But that's like such a great question.
- 47:17Speaker 2: Yes, but I think that even you know, we've been
- 47:21Speaker 2: together a long time now, I think, or not a
- 47:23Speaker 2: long time, but we've been together a decent amount of time.
- 47:25Speaker 2: I think it's communication is constantly evolving. It's like that
- 47:30Speaker 2: you also, you always have to be kind of evolving.
- 47:32Speaker 2: And when when when the communication is breaking down between
- 47:35Speaker 2: you know, a couple, you have to kind of work
- 47:38Speaker 2: on that. You have to say, Okay, what can I
- 47:39Speaker 2: do to you know, be heard the right way? You know?
- 47:44Speaker 2: And same with you. You know, you'll say to me, I
- 47:45Speaker 2: need to be heard, and then I have to figure out,
- 47:48Speaker 2: you know, you have to figure out a way to
- 47:50Speaker 2: have that conversation with me, and vice versa. So I
- 47:52Speaker 2: think that my my my only advice for people is
- 47:57Speaker 2: you have to really have patience lots of patients and
- 48:02Speaker 2: you have to you know, you have to be willing
- 48:05Speaker 2: to put the work in, you know. And I think
- 48:07Speaker 2: that I think the easy answer sometimes is you know,
- 48:12Speaker 2: oh you know, it's just not working and fuck it, right,
- 48:15Speaker 2: you know, right, that's what we do is human beings.
- 48:16Speaker 1: I think the biggest thing as well for couples is
- 48:19Speaker 1: to not shove things under the rug because then a
- 48:23Speaker 1: blow up happens, and there's so much that's you know,
- 48:26Speaker 1: been pushed aside that you don't even know the root
- 48:28Speaker 1: of the problem anymore. And I still think Randall and
- 48:32Speaker 1: I are figuring out how to argue with each other
- 48:35Speaker 1: and how to hear each other correctly, because we are
- 48:37Speaker 1: both the type of people to the second that there's
- 48:41Speaker 1: you know, we're feeling like the other one is attacking,
- 48:44Speaker 1: the wall goes up and that person immediately becomes the opponent, right,
- 48:49Speaker 1: And that's a difficult pattern to break. And I think
- 48:53Speaker 1: because you and I are like any other couple in
- 48:55Speaker 1: the world, where you hit walls sometimes, like relations, That's
- 49:00Speaker 1: what I'm saying.
- 49:01Speaker 2: And my parents have been.
- 49:01Speaker 1: Together a lot of work. So the person you're with,
- 49:05Speaker 1: you have to be willing to say, I'm going to
- 49:06Speaker 1: fight through everything to make this work.
- 49:10Speaker 2: Well, Like my parents have been together fifty years, and
- 49:13Speaker 2: I take my hat off to both them and your
- 49:15Speaker 2: parents were together for how many years? Twenty thirty, thirty?
- 49:19Speaker 1: No, they were approaching their forty forty Yeah.
- 49:24Speaker 2: Right, okay, when you're father best way, so a long time. So,
- 49:27Speaker 2: and you know, one thing I take away from them
- 49:29Speaker 2: always is you will hit walls in your relationship, whether
- 49:33Speaker 2: you've been together one year, five years, ten years, forty years.
- 49:36Speaker 2: But the thing is how you deal with it and
- 49:38Speaker 2: how you try to communicate and change the communication. Like
- 49:42Speaker 2: when you and I feel like we're not communicating, you know,
- 49:45Speaker 2: or there are things, you know, bothering me or bothering you,
- 49:49Speaker 2: we have to have that talk. And I think a
- 49:51Speaker 2: lot of couples don't want to have that talk, and
- 49:54Speaker 2: that talk isn't always comfortable.
- 49:56Speaker 1: I would say that are the biggest thing that we've practiced.
- 50:00Speaker 1: I would give this advice to anybody, is for you
- 50:02Speaker 1: and your partner to come up with a safe word,
- 50:05Speaker 1: because in the heat of the moment, you're not thinking
- 50:08Speaker 1: and you're only feeling. So it's once you feel like, okay,
- 50:12Speaker 1: I'm in this state of mind where I just want
- 50:14Speaker 1: to attack or I don't want to hear what my
- 50:16Speaker 1: partner is saying, you drop the safe word. You both
- 50:19Speaker 1: allow yourselves to quiet timeout. It's the timeout.
- 50:24Speaker 2: Yeah. And by the way, we don't have it figured
- 50:26Speaker 2: out and we're not experts, you know. But at the
- 50:28Speaker 2: same time, I feel like at the end of the day,
- 50:32Speaker 2: you just like I think that general consensus, because we're
- 50:35Speaker 2: not experts on this topic by any means. I think
- 50:38Speaker 2: you constantly have to evolve, and when you're hitting walls
- 50:42Speaker 2: and things are not going the way you'd like them
- 50:45Speaker 2: to go, because sometimes they're not going well for both
- 50:47Speaker 2: of you, and sometimes they're not going well for one person.
- 50:49Speaker 2: You know, sometimes one person struggling more than the other,
- 50:51Speaker 2: et cetera. So I just think you got to you
- 50:54Speaker 2: got to figure out a way to talk to each
- 50:56Speaker 2: other and be heard and in a way in a
- 50:58Speaker 2: way that your partner doesn't feel attacked.
- 51:01Speaker 1: It's so much easier said than done. I mean, perspective
- 51:04Speaker 1: is a real bitch, because it's like the one thing
- 51:10Speaker 1: that I sit here and I'm like, God, if we
- 51:12Speaker 1: all just see the world so differently.
- 51:16Speaker 2: Yeah, it's it's not listen, we we uh, you know,
- 51:20Speaker 2: we we do the work and and and we're always
- 51:22Speaker 2: doing the work. And some months it's super smooth sailing,
- 51:27Speaker 2: some years super smooth sailing, and summer are more difficult.
- 51:30Speaker 2: But at the end of the day, you just got
- 51:32Speaker 2: to keep talking.
- 51:33Speaker 1: But it sounds like they've been together ten years, like
- 51:35Speaker 1: their rider die for each other.
- 51:37Speaker 2: Yeah, And by the way, I think at the end
- 51:39Speaker 2: of the day. You just gotta you gotta figure out
- 51:42Speaker 2: a way to communicate.
- 51:43Speaker 1: We love saying at the end of the day.
- 51:46Speaker 2: At the end of the day, I'm going to end.
- 51:47Speaker 2: This post.
- 51:47Speaker 1: Should be called the End of the Day podcast.
- 51:50Speaker 2: That's my next podcast. That's the spin off of this podcast.
- 51:53Speaker 1: I love it.
- 51:54Speaker 2: End of the Day. Anyway, that was a really good question.
- 51:57Speaker 2: I like that mquestion just because it's nice to see
- 51:58Speaker 2: people who have been together a day kid, who you.
- 52:00Speaker 1: Know, still are trying to figure it out, just like
- 52:03Speaker 1: we all are.
- 52:03Speaker 2: But my parents, my parents too, and I and I
- 52:05Speaker 2: even remember having conversations with your dad. My parents, you know,
- 52:09Speaker 2: are together now fifty years and yeah, they have days
- 52:11Speaker 2: where they're just like, I go, how's how's my dad doing?
- 52:14Speaker 2: Not talking? Well, it's been fifty fucking years. What are
- 52:17Speaker 2: you talking about? He doesn't deserve it today I cut
- 52:20Speaker 2: pasta and the pasta it's not all about the pasta.
- 52:23Speaker 2: But but he didn't say it with al dente enough,
- 52:26Speaker 2: And I'm like, is this for real? These guys were
- 52:28Speaker 2: fifty fucking years together, but that's you know, that's the
- 52:31Speaker 2: same ship. And I remember talking. I used to go
- 52:33Speaker 2: to your dad for advice about you, and it's like, oh,
- 52:36Speaker 2: these two women, you know, you know, Lisa and you.
- 52:39Speaker 2: He's like, sometimes you just got just let it, just
- 52:42Speaker 2: let it, let it go, just let him roll. And
- 52:44Speaker 2: I was like, that's your advice.
- 52:45Speaker 5: Ken.
- 52:45Speaker 2: He's like, yeah, it's like okay, and by.
- 52:47Speaker 1: The way, me and my mom to just tire ourselves out.
- 52:51Speaker 2: But that's but that's what he was. That's what Ken
- 52:53Speaker 2: used to try to tell me. But it was so new,
- 52:55Speaker 2: it was like three months in and I'd be like, Kent,
- 52:58Speaker 2: that's not the fucking advice I was looking for. It's
- 53:00Speaker 2: like you'll learn, you'll learn, you have Yeah, No, I
- 53:02Speaker 2: just quit. I just quit the fight. I just just like, Okay,
- 53:05Speaker 2: you win. It's it's too exhausting.
- 53:07Speaker 1: I take it. Anyway, those were epic voicemails. I'm happy
- 53:10Speaker 1: about it. Remember you guys can call in, leave us
