- 0:00Speaker 1: Now, it is incumbent upon us every week when we
- 0:10Speaker 1: have Roger Wallace on to A, come out of the break,
- 0:15Speaker 1: the return cut being a Jimmy Buffett tune, and B,
- 0:19Speaker 1: for Roger to explain or give the historical significance of
- 0:24Speaker 1: the particular selection that Jay Carman comes up with. In
- 0:28Speaker 1: this case, is this what, Florida A's?
- 0:29Speaker 2: Florida A's.
- 0:31Speaker 1: All right.
- 0:31Speaker 3: Man, Jake, you just hit a grand slam.
- 0:35Speaker 1: Is this one of the later offerings that Buffett had?
- 0:38Speaker 3: No, no, it's not. It's, I think, mid-80s.
- 0:42Speaker 1: Okay.
- 0:44Speaker 4: But one of my favorite lines, pale invaders and tan
- 0:48Speaker 4: crusaders worshiping the sun.
- 0:51Speaker 2: Man, that is so good.
- 0:52Speaker 1: I see that every summer in North Carolina. Exactly. It's there.
- 0:57Speaker 1: It's definitely there. No doubt about it. And so it'll
- 1:02Speaker 1: be Florida days. But I'll get to this in a moment.
- 1:07Speaker 1: We'll talk a little bit more about the Texas-Florida matchup
- 1:10Speaker 1: in a moment. But, Ann, I'm sure that you saw
- 1:16Speaker 1: the breaking news alert yesterday. Nobody's going to be shocked
- 1:19Speaker 1: by this. It appears that the announcement is just around
- 1:24Speaker 1: the corner that the college football playoff is close to
- 1:27Speaker 1: a deal, according to Pete Thamel reporting from ESPN, to
- 1:31Speaker 1: double the size to 2014's beginning next year. 2027. Of course,
- 1:36Speaker 1: the CFP and ESPN have been negotiating a new deal
- 1:39Speaker 1: for the network to be its continued broadcast partner, which
- 1:44Speaker 1: will lead to this big move that you would go
- 1:48Speaker 1: to 2014. I don't think anybody's surprised by this. Once
- 1:52Speaker 1: that exclusive negotiating period was open for ESPN, you weren't surprised,
- 1:57Speaker 1: were you?
- 1:58Speaker 4: No, I mean, once that kind of that genie's out
- 2:01Speaker 4: of the bottle. I will say I did have a
- 2:03Speaker 4: healthy little discussion. I won't say as far as argument
- 2:07Speaker 4: with Noah Gross just minutes ago.
- 2:10Speaker 2: About the news. He's against it. I'm for it. Everybody's
- 2:14Speaker 2: got their reasonings. Mine's very selfish.
- 2:17Speaker 4: I'd love the idea to call more, be a part
- 2:20Speaker 4: of more broadcasts in the college football playoff.
- 2:23Speaker 2: I don't know how you stand on that.
- 2:25Speaker 4: So, but yeah, I know there's a lot of people that,
- 2:28Speaker 4: you know, why do we need 24 in the regular season?
- 2:33Speaker 4: I disagree for a few reasons, but, yeah, I'm not surprised.
- 2:36Speaker 1: Well, first of all, Noah Gross is opposed to everything.
- 2:40Speaker 2: Oh, that's great.
- 2:41Speaker 3: Well, right now he's grinding, Craig.
- 2:44Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm sure he is.
- 2:46Speaker 2: You know what I mean. The Guardians are on the doorstep,
- 2:49Speaker 2: and he's got to work.
- 2:51Speaker 1: I started to say he's against anything that doesn't involve
- 2:54Speaker 1: the Guardians or the Maryland Terrapins, right?
- 2:57Speaker 2: That's exactly right.
- 2:58Speaker 4: And now he's sitting here four outs away with the time.
- 3:01Speaker 3: Around a third.
- 3:04Speaker 1: Yeah, it is 3-2 Cleveland. We'll keep folks updated on that.
- 3:08Speaker 1: Tampa Bay at bat in the top half of the
- 3:11Speaker 1: eighth inning with a tying run. at third base and
- 3:14Speaker 1: a 3-2 lead for the Guardians. And I am, people
- 3:21Speaker 1: who know me, and I've said this for a long time,
- 3:23Speaker 1: I've been a more is more guy. I didn't have
- 3:26Speaker 1: any problem with the NCAA basketball tournament going to 68.
- 3:29Speaker 1: I really don't have a problem with it going to
- 3:31Speaker 1: 76 because I always feel like the cream is going
- 3:35Speaker 1: to rise to the top anyway off of that. And
- 3:38Speaker 1: I think it's the same with football. If they asked me,
- 3:40Speaker 1: and no one did, But if they ask me for
- 3:43Speaker 1: an ideal number that I thought for the college playoff,
- 3:47Speaker 1: I've been saying 16 since about 2016. I mean, a
- 3:51Speaker 1: long time. I thought it should be 16. Now, my
- 3:55Speaker 1: vision of it was a little more egalitarian. I wasn't
- 3:58Speaker 1: so much P4 interested. I was thinking at the time...
- 4:03Speaker 1: There were 11, I think there's 11, Division I FBS conferences.
- 4:10Speaker 1: Give every conference champion a bid, seated however, and then
- 4:15Speaker 1: five at large. That's how I looked at it. We
- 4:18Speaker 1: both know that's not what this is about. The P4s
- 4:22Speaker 1: are going to benefit the most out of this. I
- 4:24Speaker 1: am kind of curious to see with the expansion, with
- 4:27Speaker 1: the doubling of size to 24, what how it will
- 4:31Speaker 1: affect the G6 leagues, how it might affect a Texas
- 4:35Speaker 1: State or a UTSA or a North Texas or one
- 4:40Speaker 1: of those schools in addition to the second tier, third tier,
- 4:44Speaker 1: and dare we even think it, fourth tier, you know,
- 4:48Speaker 1: entries from, say, the SEC or the Big Ten.
- 4:51Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that's where you're going to get the grumbling.
- 4:53Speaker 4: If it follows what we think is going to happen, 23... uh,
- 4:58Speaker 4: one guaranteed, uh, group, group of four or group of six,
- 5:03Speaker 4: then obviously they're going to have a tough time getting
- 5:07Speaker 4: multiple because of, we know who runs college football. So
- 5:09Speaker 4: I think that's where the grumbling, if you have a
- 5:12Speaker 4: three or a four loss SEC team that gets in
- 5:15Speaker 4: over a one loss, uh, group of six, then, then yeah.
- 5:19Speaker 4: But I just like it because I think there's still
- 5:22Speaker 4: a lot to play for. For instance, the first round
- 5:24Speaker 4: by which means not only don't you have to play
- 5:27Speaker 4: the first round, you get a home game in the
- 5:29Speaker 4: second game.
- 5:29Speaker 1: Right.
- 5:30Speaker 4: So you're you're playing a team that's coming off a
- 5:32Speaker 4: game and you're still playing at home. You're not going
- 5:35Speaker 4: to a neutral site. And that may be one of
- 5:37Speaker 4: the reasons if you look at all the teams with
- 5:39Speaker 4: a buy struggled except Indiana. Well, they also didn't benefit
- 5:42Speaker 4: from a home game.
- 5:44Speaker 1: True.
- 5:45Speaker 4: Like is going to happen this time. So there's still
- 5:48Speaker 4: going to be, you know, top eight, I think is
- 5:50Speaker 4: going to be hugely important. You know, and then, and
- 5:53Speaker 4: then you go the next eight, getting home games to
- 5:56Speaker 4: start with and not having to go on the road.
- 5:59Speaker 4: and win a game and then go back on the
- 6:00Speaker 4: road and win a second game. So I think there's
- 6:03Speaker 4: still going to be a very intriguing regular season.
- 6:06Speaker 1: Yeah, I think there'll be quite a bit of wailing
- 6:09Speaker 1: and gnashing of teeth about that, the ones that aren't
- 6:11Speaker 1: getting into it and all that kind of thing. The
- 6:14Speaker 1: New Year's Six Bowls still expected to host the quarterfinals
- 6:18Speaker 1: and the semifinals. The national championship game would remain in January.
- 6:23Speaker 1: So we know what this means. This is going to
- 6:26Speaker 1: mean that whoever reaches this year's SEC championship game, it's
- 6:32Speaker 1: the long kiss goodnight, isn't it? This is going to
- 6:34Speaker 1: be it for conference championship games.
- 6:37Speaker 2: That's right.
- 6:37Speaker 4: And I'm not totally opposed to that because, you know,
- 6:43Speaker 4: you get in on an imbalanced schedule or you could
- 6:46Speaker 4: have a rematch, which, you know, obviously Texas had the
- 6:50Speaker 4: rematch a couple of years ago.
- 6:52Speaker 2: So, yeah, I don't know. I think.
- 6:55Speaker 4: I don't have a whole lot of use for the
- 6:57Speaker 4: championship games, just like I don't have a whole lot
- 7:00Speaker 4: of use for championship tournaments in college basketball to determine
- 7:04Speaker 4: the automatic bid after, you know, two and a half
- 7:06Speaker 4: months of beating each other's brains out.
- 7:08Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 7:09Speaker 1: I mean, I understand why the one-bid leagues do it,
- 7:12Speaker 1: you know, for the national TV exposure and the money
- 7:15Speaker 1: that they can get for it if you're in.
- 7:16Speaker 4: The Southern— And everybody's got a reason to keep playing,
- 7:18Speaker 4: you know, if they— struggle out of the gates.
- 7:21Speaker 2: I get that.
- 7:22Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, it makes sense on that. Roger Wallace with
- 7:24Speaker 1: us here. Before we jump to high school, I know
- 7:27Speaker 1: you had an opportunity to visit with Sark this morning,
- 7:29Speaker 1: as I did last night for Longhorn Weekly, that'll air tonight. Then,
- 7:33Speaker 1: of course, he had the media Zoom as well. This
- 7:37Speaker 1: is also from the Department of Not Being Surprised. Safe
- 7:42Speaker 1: to say you were not surprised by the fact that
- 7:44Speaker 1: there was not one question asked about Florida until the
- 7:49Speaker 1: next to last one when Terry Middleton asked. Not one
- 7:52Speaker 1: single question was asked about the Florida Gators until the next.
- 7:55Speaker 3: To last of the session. You know, and I think
- 7:59Speaker 3: that's two things.
- 8:00Speaker 4: One, you know, Texas is coming off a loss, so
- 8:03Speaker 4: it's all about how can they fix things. But I
- 8:05Speaker 4: think that's kind of where we got and where it's
- 8:07Speaker 4: so much just about this team. Whether they're winning, you
- 8:10Speaker 4: find the things that they aren't doing well when they're winning.
- 8:13Speaker 4: And obviously when they're losing, it's even magnified more. And
- 8:16Speaker 4: so everyone who wants to get those questions in, basically
- 8:20Speaker 4: it's a reflection of what they think is wrong. You know,
- 8:22Speaker 4: for the most part, they ask the question because they think, okay,
- 8:25Speaker 4: this is what I see. And then all of a
- 8:27Speaker 4: sudden you look up and you've got nothing on Florida
- 8:31Speaker 4: and potentially Aaron Philo's situation. And, you know, the, the
- 8:36Speaker 4: fact that their defense has really struggled, but you know,
- 8:38Speaker 4: they had a great win a.
- 8:39Speaker 2: Few weeks ago and now they're, you know, on the
- 8:42Speaker 2: other end of it.
- 8:42Speaker 4: So yeah, it's, it's interesting. And you always think maybe Thursday,
- 8:46Speaker 4: the zoom would be more about the opponent and it lately,
- 8:49Speaker 4: lately it's, it's all about Texas and fixing things.
- 8:53Speaker 1: Well, and I don't mean this in a snarky way,
- 8:57Speaker 1: even though it may come out that way. I don't
- 8:59Speaker 1: mean it this way. But many of the questions that
- 9:03Speaker 1: are being asked in that specific availability, and to a
- 9:08Speaker 1: lesser extent on the Monday press conference, but that's bigger
- 9:10Speaker 1: and longer and more broad-based. But in that Thursday Zoom,
- 9:15Speaker 1: a lot of the questions generally, almost weekly, come from
- 9:21Speaker 1: the reporters who are writing for the fan sites who
- 9:24Speaker 1: they already kind of have their story and narrative written
- 9:28Speaker 1: about the angle they want to take. Don't mean that
- 9:30Speaker 1: in a bad way, just that they have the slant
- 9:33Speaker 1: that they want to take. For example, Chip Brown asked
- 9:37Speaker 1: about interior backup offensive linemen. Because clearly, he's writing about
- 9:43Speaker 1: the interior offensive lineman for good, bad, or whatever, and
- 9:46Speaker 1: Sark gave him a three-second answer and said, well, the guys,
- 9:49Speaker 1: those backups need to do a better job in practice,
- 9:51Speaker 1: that kind of thing. But a lot of those guys
- 9:55Speaker 1: who are writing those stories, they have a specific storyline
- 9:58Speaker 1: idea in mind. I would think, and are trying to
- 10:02Speaker 1: get a quote and some verification on it, wouldn't you think?
- 10:06Speaker 3: No doubt.
- 10:07Speaker 2: And they want Friday off.
- 10:11Speaker 3: You remember when Tom Herman.
- 10:12Speaker 4: Used to do a Thursday evening availability after practice. And
- 10:17Speaker 4: I know there was a lot of grumbling there because
- 10:19Speaker 4: to your point, everybody kind of had their preview story
- 10:22Speaker 4: or their Friday story or Saturday morning story.
- 10:25Speaker 2: By then in the can, but you feel compelled. You've
- 10:28Speaker 2: got to be there to see what he says.
- 10:31Speaker 4: And so I think part of that is some practicality of,
- 10:34Speaker 4: all right, we need Friday off to get ready for
- 10:37Speaker 4: the weekend.
- 10:38Speaker 2: And you got to start and do it all over
- 10:40Speaker 2: again on Monday. But yeah, I think there's something said
- 10:44Speaker 2: about that.
- 10:45Speaker 4: Now, the other thing, there was nothing mentioned about any
- 10:48Speaker 4: of the availability report as far as, again, I go
- 10:52Speaker 4: back to Florida.
- 10:53Speaker 2: You know, Philo's questionable. That's not.
- 10:55Speaker 4: You know, it's one thing if he's probable, but there
- 10:57Speaker 4: was no question about, hey, what if it's Philo? What
- 10:59Speaker 4: if it's Jones?
- 11:01Speaker 2: Or things like that.
- 11:02Speaker 4: But yeah, I think everybody kind of gets caught up
- 11:04Speaker 4: in their own thoughts on what needs to be fixed.
- 11:08Speaker 2: And then the opponent.
- 11:09Speaker 3: Steve Bowman gets left out.
- 11:11Speaker 1: Yeah. Remember when Mac used to do like a late
- 11:14Speaker 1: Sunday afternoon dial-in conference call? Remember that deal? We'd just
- 11:21Speaker 1: seen him the night before after a game. And then, oh,
- 11:23Speaker 1: by the way, 5 o'clock, Mac with an update for you.
- 11:27Speaker 3: Yeah, and you feel like, okay, why don't we go
- 11:29Speaker 3: into postgame?
- 11:30Speaker 2: We're going to get them the next day. Right. Yeah,
- 11:34Speaker 2: so I.
- 11:35Speaker 4: Think it's about everybody's particular thoughts on where things can
- 11:40Speaker 4: improve and how they're going to fix everything.
- 11:43Speaker 1: Roger Wallace with us a couple more minutes. Let's jump
- 11:45Speaker 1: to high school. You've got Vista Ridge and Eastview tonight
- 11:49Speaker 1: on your game of the week. And this is, we
- 11:51Speaker 1: are now officially, wouldn't you say, it's week eight of
- 11:55Speaker 1: of the high school season, seventh game for a lot
- 11:57Speaker 1: of schools, counting the open date on there. But we're
- 12:00Speaker 1: now to the point where a lot of the attention,
- 12:04Speaker 1: and I think tonight's game kind of falls into the
- 12:06Speaker 1: category for you, doesn't it? Falls on teams jostling for
- 12:12Speaker 1: and trying to land a playoff spot in the third
- 12:14Speaker 1: or fourth round, not just, you know, who's on top
- 12:16Speaker 1: of district races here.
- 12:18Speaker 4: Yeah, desperation would come to mind in our game tonight
- 12:22Speaker 4: out at Georgetown. I think of the two, first of all,
- 12:27Speaker 4: Vista Ridge, this is game eight for them. So they
- 12:29Speaker 4: don't have many chances and they got to play Cedar
- 12:32Speaker 4: Park in two weeks. So that's going to be difficult.
- 12:35Speaker 4: But Eastview, on the other hand, they get, yes, I
- 12:38Speaker 4: know they don't have a win, but they get Vista Ridge,
- 12:40Speaker 4: they get Leander. And then suddenly that Rouse game could
- 12:44Speaker 4: mean something in the final week.
- 12:46Speaker 2: And it was funny because.
- 12:47Speaker 4: Bill Robertson, their head coach, when we corresponded, he was saying,
- 12:52Speaker 4: I sure hope we look better than the fiasco you
- 12:56Speaker 4: saw in week one. That was a game that only,
- 12:59Speaker 4: they only played a half against Cedar Ridge. And then
- 13:01Speaker 4: it was called because of, of lightning, but you know,
- 13:04Speaker 4: they were down a couple of touchdowns, but yeah, it'll.
- 13:07Speaker 2: Be interesting to see how they look. And then Mr. Ridge,
- 13:10Speaker 2: obviously desperation, but.
- 13:12Speaker 4: You know, they've, they've got some kids and they got
- 13:14Speaker 4: one of the toughest players out there. And, and Sysotowski,
- 13:17Speaker 4: they're running back. He's, he'll be ready to roll no
- 13:19Speaker 4: matter what's.
- 13:20Speaker 1: On the line.
- 13:21Speaker 2: So hopefully we will, we'll have a good one here tonight. Yeah.
- 13:25Speaker 1: Final thing here, does it seem kind of weird to
- 13:29Speaker 1: not be calling the Shoal Creek Showdown tomorrow? I know
- 13:33Speaker 1: you guys will have it. You'll have the stream coming in, right,
- 13:36Speaker 1: on KXM Plus?
- 13:37Speaker 3: Yeah, we'll have it on KXM Plus.
- 13:39Speaker 1: Okay, but it'd be a little weird not actually calling
- 13:42Speaker 1: it for the first time in a while?
- 13:43Speaker 4: It is, and it's weird because it was such a
- 13:47Speaker 4: cool way to kick off the season. on that Thursday
- 13:50Speaker 4: night at House Park. And you go out to training
- 13:55Speaker 4: camps and both sides say, yeah, this is what really
- 13:58Speaker 4: gets us through to the practices leading up is now
- 14:02Speaker 4: we're gonna play our rivals, kids that we grew up with.
- 14:05Speaker 2: And things like that.
- 14:06Speaker 4: And now, you know, McCallum, obviously their record's not bad,
- 14:11Speaker 4: but they have struggled.
- 14:13Speaker 2: And Anderson, I think, is pretty good.
- 14:15Speaker 4: So, yeah, I think McCallum's got their work cut out
- 14:18Speaker 4: for him to kind of stay in this ballgame.
- 14:21Speaker 2: But, yeah, it is weird.
- 14:22Speaker 4: And that, you know, that goes to the realignment. Once
- 14:25Speaker 4: that happened, we knew that wasn't going to be our...
- 14:28Speaker 4: our kickoff game to the season.
- 14:29Speaker 1: No doubt about it. You can catch that tonight on
- 14:32Speaker 1: KBVO at 7 o'clock. It'll be Eastview hosting Vista Ridge
- 14:37Speaker 1: in Georgetown on that, and then the full variety of
- 14:39Speaker 1: games available tomorrow on KXAN +. Thanks for the time, Rod.
- 14:42Speaker 1: See you at the stadium bright and early on Saturday morning.
- 14:45Speaker 2: Bright and early. You got it.
- 14:47Speaker 4: Thanks again for that one, Jake. That was awesome.
- 14:49Speaker 1: No problem, Roger. All right. That's Roger Wallace. there, and
- 14:53Speaker 1: he'll join me for the call of the Longhorns game
- 14:55Speaker 1: on Saturday morning, but you can catch him and Keith
- 14:57Speaker 1: Moreland tonight on KBVO's telecast of the Vista Ridge at
- 15:03Speaker 1: Eastview game. Up next, Inconceivable, here on a Thursday afternoon
- 15:06Speaker 1: on Sports Radio AM 13 Under the Zone and EIR
- 15:08Speaker 1: Radio app.
