Transcript
- 0:09Speaker 1: Hello and welcome back to the Inside the Birds pregame show.
- 0:13Speaker 1: It's been quite a while since February, but we are
- 0:16Speaker 1: back for another year. It's Jeff Mosier, it's Adam Kaplan,
- 0:20Speaker 1: and you know when we got the pregame show, we
- 0:22Speaker 1: get the best tape breakdown guy there is in Greg Cosell.
- 0:26Speaker 2: You've seen him on ESPN's NFL matchup show. He's the master. Greg,
- 0:30Speaker 2: it's been too long since we talked some ball, man.
- 0:33Speaker 3: Yeah, it's been a long time. Of course, as you
- 0:36Speaker 3: guys know, I don't really take a lot of time off,
- 0:38Speaker 3: so I've been grinding away all summer, but I'm just
- 0:40Speaker 3: really glad there's real games, that I've actually had a
- 0:43Speaker 3: chance to watch two games, real games, and I'll be
- 0:47Speaker 3: pretty excited when I come in Monday morning, which will
- 0:49Speaker 3: probably be about 5 a.m., but I'll be ready to
- 0:52Speaker 3: watch some games that really matter.
- 0:55Speaker 1: And that's the key word. They actually matter. We got
- 0:57Speaker 1: our appetite wet a little bit this week. And now
- 1:00Speaker 1: we're going to preview the Eagles' first game since that
- 1:03Speaker 1: 23-19 playoff loss to the 49ers that ended their 2025 season.
- 1:10Speaker 1: They will play the Commanders in Week 1. And listen,
- 1:14Speaker 1: I think this is going to be a theme not
- 1:15Speaker 1: just for the Eagles and Commanders, Greg, right, and Adam,
- 1:17Speaker 1: but for nearly every– I don't want to say every,
- 1:20Speaker 1: but a lot of teams in the league made a
- 1:21Speaker 1: lot of changes this at play caller, whether offensive or defensive.
- 1:25Speaker 2: Here's the situation.
- 1:26Speaker 1: The Eagles may want an offense. Commanders changed both their
- 1:30Speaker 1: offense and defensive play caller and brought in some interesting
- 1:33Speaker 1: systems that I really look forward to getting into with
- 1:36Speaker 1: you guys on this show.
- 1:37Speaker 2: It is week one. It will be at the link.
- 1:40Speaker 1: It is a 425 game and it'll be the first
- 1:43Speaker 1: time for fans of both franchises to be able to
- 1:46Speaker 1: see the new concepts and the new players and how
- 1:49Speaker 1: they fit those concepts.
- 1:51Speaker 2: So as we get into this, Matchup. Greg, you said
- 1:53Speaker 2: it best.
- 1:54Speaker 1: A lot of this is going to be speculative because
- 1:56Speaker 1: when guys come from trees, especially guys like Sean Mannion
- 2:01Speaker 1: or Durante Jones, the defensive coordinator, or David Brown, right,
- 2:04Speaker 1: who have never even play called elsewhere before or were
- 2:08Speaker 1: just recently playing in the league, you really don't know
- 2:11Speaker 1: what you're going to get.
- 2:12Speaker 3: No, I mean, all you can do is look at
- 2:14Speaker 3: where they've been because younger coaches tend to coach what
- 2:19Speaker 3: they know. And so when you're with a particular system
- 2:23Speaker 3: or a particular scheme, you tend to gravitate toward that.
- 2:26Speaker 3: I'm not saying that it's not possible that they haven't
- 2:29Speaker 3: studied other things, because as you guys know, coaches live
- 2:31Speaker 3: this 24-7, 365. I mean, even when they're off for
- 2:35Speaker 3: a month, they're still thinking about scheming. So, you know,
- 2:38Speaker 3: I'm not suggesting, for instance, Durante Jones wouldn't do something else,
- 2:42Speaker 3: but you know that there'll be a lot of the
- 2:43Speaker 3: Brian Flores system in what he brings to the table.
- 2:47Speaker 2: Right, for sure. All right.
- 2:49Speaker 4: Good stuff.
- 2:49Speaker 2: So, Adam, so often we do this show.
- 2:52Speaker 1: We do the matchups, and the first thing we have
- 2:53Speaker 1: to do is talk about all the major injuries that
- 2:57Speaker 1: are going to change the matchup. But as we go
- 3:00Speaker 1: into this game, the commanders, who had a pretty expansive
- 3:04Speaker 1: injury report throughout the week, it looks like they're in
- 3:06Speaker 1: pretty good shape, and the Eagles, of course, are not
- 3:08Speaker 1: going to have their pass rusher that they acquired via
- 3:11Speaker 1: trade in the offseason, Jonathan Grenard. But it was trending.
- 3:15Speaker 1: Even if he made it there, we kept saying he
- 3:16Speaker 1: wasn't going to play a lot anyway.
- 3:18Speaker 4: Yeah, he wasn't real confident he was going to play.
- 3:20Speaker 4: I mean, he's making progress. He was in pads this week.
- 3:22Speaker 4: That's good. He's getting used to being back on the field.
- 3:26Speaker 4: I'm pretty certain he worked the previous week because they
- 3:28Speaker 4: were working when the media wasn't there.
- 3:31Speaker 3: I was so excited. I was in pads this week, too.
- 3:34Speaker 3: I was so excited.
- 3:37Speaker 2: I mean, is that an age? Are you age-jerking yourself, Greg?
- 3:42Speaker 4: That's pretty good, Jeff. That's pretty good. But yeah, but
- 3:47Speaker 4: here's the thing. Let's get over to Washington, right? Yeah.
- 3:50Speaker 4: Let's not forget. Yes, their injury report. Everyone who is
- 3:53Speaker 4: on their 53-man roster will be available. Correct. But it's
- 3:56Speaker 4: who is not going to be available because they're on reserve.
- 3:59Speaker 2: Well, of course.
- 3:59Speaker 4: Army tells us we'll miss the entire regular season.
- 4:01Speaker 2: Okay.
- 4:03Speaker 4: He's got a tough injury. Yep. They're going to go
- 4:05Speaker 4: with Brandon Coleman. who started two years ago, but because
- 4:08Speaker 4: he didn't do well enough, they made the trade for Tunsell.
- 4:11Speaker 4: Johnny Newton is on IR. Trey Amos, their best corner,
- 4:14Speaker 4: who I know they were excited about, he's on IR.
- 4:18Speaker 4: Dietrich Weiss is out. And Dorrance Armstrong, who's also back
- 4:22Speaker 4: from injury, he's suspended for a game. So they have
- 4:24Speaker 4: some important guys who are not going to be here
- 4:26Speaker 4: for this game.
- 4:27Speaker 2: Yeah, no, that is out.
- 4:29Speaker 1: I know that the Commander fan may come on the
- 4:32Speaker 1: show and say, hey, the Commanders won 12 games two
- 4:35Speaker 1: years ago without Laramie Tunsell. However, you didn't draw it
- 4:38Speaker 1: up that way. They wanted him to be there. He
- 4:40Speaker 1: had a really nice year last year. Unfortunately, the rest
- 4:42Speaker 1: of the team didn't, and now he'll be out for
- 4:44Speaker 1: a long time. Back to Brandon Coleman. Greg, real quick,
- 4:47Speaker 1: while we're on the subject of offensive line.
- 4:48Speaker 2: What did you think, though?
- 4:49Speaker 1: I thought they might have pondered the idea of moving
- 4:53Speaker 1: Connerly to left tackle because that's where he played at Oregon.
- 4:57Speaker 1: They're keeping him at right tackle, Sam Cosme, right guard.
- 4:59Speaker 1: Does that– Is that like a big disparity between right
- 5:03Speaker 1: and left for you?
- 5:04Speaker 3: Well, I think that Connelly went through quite a learning
- 5:07Speaker 3: process a year ago, and it took him a while
- 5:09Speaker 3: to kind of feel really comfortable at right tackle because
- 5:12Speaker 3: he played left tackle, obviously, at Oregon. And my sense
- 5:15Speaker 3: is they don't want to jump him back and forth
- 5:18Speaker 3: because I think they probably feel– because he's very– he's
- 5:22Speaker 3: got higher level traits and I think they feel he
- 5:25Speaker 3: could probably become one of the better right tackles in
- 5:28Speaker 3: the league. And you don't want to just keep yo-yoing
- 5:30Speaker 3: him back and forth. So that would be my guess.
- 5:33Speaker 3: Obviously I don't, you know, no one from the team
- 5:35Speaker 3: is telling me that, but that would just be my opinion.
- 5:37Speaker 3: And Coleman, obviously he's not exactly what you wanted left tackle,
- 5:41Speaker 3: but he's played left tackle. And, you know, so now look,
- 5:46Speaker 3: Are there situations where you're probably going to feel like
- 5:48Speaker 3: you have to help him based on the, you know,
- 5:50Speaker 3: game situation, play call?
- 5:52Speaker 4: Certainly.
- 5:53Speaker 3: But you can line him up, and if everything else
- 5:56Speaker 3: goes okay, depending on how the game flow is, you
- 6:01Speaker 3: can get through the game. You know, he's not one
- 6:04Speaker 3: of those guys that's, you know, just going to be,
- 6:06Speaker 3: you know, a mad rush at the quarterback.
- 6:08Speaker 2: Right.
- 6:09Speaker 4: We should add they cut D.J. Humphreys, the journeyman left tackle.
- 6:13Speaker 4: You might remember him years ago as a first-round pick.
- 6:14Speaker 4: They cut him Friday, so. They're going to be tested,
- 6:17Speaker 4: but they're going to have Nick Allegretti back, who missed
- 6:20Speaker 4: all the preseason in training camp. They're moving him from
- 6:22Speaker 4: guard to center. They cut Tyler Biotish. So they've got
- 6:26Speaker 4: some changes here, Jeff, as we send it back to you,
- 6:28Speaker 4: that are very concerning when you go up against this
- 6:31Speaker 4: Eagles offensive line.
- 6:32Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 6:34Speaker 1: And so now's a good time to get into systems
- 6:35Speaker 1: and matchups and personnel. Real quick, though, from an Eagles side,
- 6:39Speaker 1: Eli Stowers, the rookie tight end who really struggled in camp,
- 6:44Speaker 1: was dealing with a hamstring injury. Looks like he's questionable
- 6:46Speaker 1: to play. I know he told reporters in the locker
- 6:48Speaker 1: room he expects to play. We'll see if the coaches
- 6:52Speaker 1: believe in that as well or agree with that because
- 6:55Speaker 1: he really was behind the eight ball in training camp.
- 6:58Speaker 1: But he was questionable on the injury report. Why don't
- 7:01Speaker 1: we start off with the big talking point of the offseason,
- 7:05Speaker 1: and that would be the Eagles offense, Sean Mannion, the
- 7:08Speaker 1: new offensive coordinator, what the offense can look like if
- 7:12Speaker 1: things are going well and how it will match up.
- 7:14Speaker 2: Against this new commander's defense and defensive concept. So, Greg,
- 7:19Speaker 2: a lot of coaches who have coached.
- 7:24Speaker 1: In this Shanahan-McVay scheme, they always talk about your footwork
- 7:29Speaker 1: and how that matches up with the timing of the routes,
- 7:31Speaker 1: and you're supposed to almost hear your feet to know
- 7:34Speaker 1: it's time to throw. And I'm wondering if you can
- 7:37Speaker 1: sort of paint that picture of what that exactly means
- 7:39Speaker 1: by hearing your feet within the structure of what's supposed
- 7:42Speaker 1: to be done offensively.
- 7:44Speaker 3: Well, in that system, and I can, every system is different. Now,
- 7:48Speaker 3: one could argue that footwork's always important, but I can
- 7:51Speaker 3: tell you for a fact that, for instance, and Adam
- 7:53Speaker 3: may know this because I've had this conversation with Brian Hoyer,
- 7:57Speaker 3: and Brian Hoyer played at the Josh McDaniel system, and
- 7:59Speaker 3: he said they never spoke about footwork in that system. Now, obviously,
- 8:02Speaker 3: they're not saying that footwork doesn't matter. Obviously, you can't
- 8:05Speaker 3: throw if you're off balance. You can't really do anything
- 8:08Speaker 3: athletic if you're off balance, but in the sort of
- 8:12Speaker 3: Shanahan-McVeigh scheme of school of thought, everything is highly choreographed.
- 8:19Speaker 3: It's almost like a dance. It's like ballet. Everything with
- 8:23Speaker 3: your drop and your footwork is choreographed to tie in
- 8:28Speaker 3: and sync up with the routes, with the depth of routes.
- 8:33Speaker 3: So it's truly highly choreographed. And if you're off, and
- 8:38Speaker 3: don't forget, it's really a game of milliseconds. So if
- 8:41Speaker 3: you're off, by just the smallest amount in that system,
- 8:45Speaker 3: you are off. That's the way it's taught. Like I said,
- 8:49Speaker 3: the best word is choreography. It's choreographed. It's like a
- 8:52Speaker 3: dance routine. So that is something, again, I don't know
- 8:56Speaker 3: how Jalen has specifically been taught by previous coaches. He's
- 9:00Speaker 3: obviously had a lot of them. So I don't know
- 9:02Speaker 3: how he's been taught previously, but this is truly taught
- 9:06Speaker 3: that way. This is why someone like Bill Walsh, because
- 9:09Speaker 3: these systems are really continuations of Bill Walsh. Bill Walsh
- 9:13Speaker 3: always said he could tell how a quarterback is playing
- 9:15Speaker 3: by looking at him from the waist down. So this
- 9:19Speaker 3: system really demands that. This is not, hey, just take
- 9:22Speaker 3: the snap drop back and, you know, let's throw it
- 9:24Speaker 3: to the open guy. And again, I'm simplifying to the point, obviously,
- 9:28Speaker 3: of being ridiculous, but it's not like that. It's truly,
- 9:32Speaker 3: you know, so choreographed that you have to be exactly right.
- 9:36Speaker 4: Jeff, there's that video that Steve Young talks about it,
- 9:39Speaker 4: and then he did it with Jerry Rice, where we're
- 9:41Speaker 4: blindfolded practice. Yes. Going to what Greg just said, because
- 9:45Speaker 4: that made me think of it.
- 9:45Speaker 3: I talked to Steve Young about that, by the way,
- 9:47Speaker 3: because I've talked to him. It's so cool.
- 9:49Speaker 4: I couldn't believe what I saw, because on the rhythmic
- 9:52Speaker 4: part of it, he knows three-step drop, five-step drop, exactly
- 9:57Speaker 4: the timing when it's got to be at. There's a
- 9:59Speaker 4: clock that in his head. He knows how to do
- 10:02Speaker 4: it on that third step out.
- 10:03Speaker 3: And you're throwing to a spot that the receiver's not
- 10:06Speaker 3: gotten to yet. Steve Young said the biggest issue he had,
- 10:09Speaker 3: now he was six feet, he said the biggest issue
- 10:11Speaker 3: he had, and he finally mastered it, obviously he's a
- 10:14Speaker 3: Hall of Famer, was that he finally mastered the fact
- 10:17Speaker 3: that he had to deliver the football and throw it
- 10:20Speaker 3: to where a receiver was not, knowing that.
- 10:22Speaker 4: The receiver would be there. Trust him.
- 10:25Speaker 3: That's the choreographed part of it. You're not sort of
- 10:27Speaker 3: waiting to see, gee, is that going to be open?
- 10:31Speaker 3: You just have to trust the whole choreography of the system.
- 10:35Speaker 1: Right. So when we look at what now the Eagles
- 10:39Speaker 1: are going to do, right, Greg, within the function of
- 10:42Speaker 1: that system. First of all, their running style is going
- 10:45Speaker 1: to be different. It's going to be a lot of
- 10:47Speaker 1: wide zone. We've seen that in training camp with our
- 10:49Speaker 1: own eyes.
- 10:49Speaker 3: Which also plays well into the boot action, which obviously
- 10:52Speaker 3: is something Jalen can do without a problem.
- 10:54Speaker 4: Right.
- 10:55Speaker 1: I've always wondered about Saquon Barkley, based on conversations that
- 10:59Speaker 1: we've had with you, about his running style, being a searcher.
- 11:03Speaker 1: Saquon said himself he's always been a two-footed, two-cut runner,
- 11:08Speaker 1: where first cut if it's not there he can cut
- 11:10Speaker 1: on the left and he's super human enough to either
- 11:12Speaker 1: spin into.
- 11:13Speaker 2: A hole or find a hole or reverse hurdle.
- 11:15Speaker 1: Himself into a hole whereas this kind of zone wide
- 11:19Speaker 1: zone blocking system takes one cut so.
- 11:22Speaker 3: Well he certainly that's a mental thing he certainly has
- 11:24Speaker 3: the physical traits to do it sure i mean he
- 11:26Speaker 3: certainly can stick his foot in the round ground and
- 11:29Speaker 3: accelerate that we know he can do that so that's
- 11:32Speaker 3: a mental thing the comfort level of of you know
- 11:35Speaker 3: because there's a combination of patience and decisiveness. And that's
- 11:40Speaker 3: a balance that you have to find because when you take,
- 11:44Speaker 3: take the ball from the quarterback, if it's sort of
- 11:46Speaker 3: wide zone, you know, you have to be patient. It's
- 11:48Speaker 3: not just take it and go. You have, you have
- 11:51Speaker 3: to be able to intuitively read gap fluidity, defensive flow,
- 11:56Speaker 3: you know, that that's all innate. You're not thinking that
- 11:58Speaker 3: as you're doing it, you know, it just becomes innate.
- 12:01Speaker 3: Some guys are, are, just master. I mean, we saw
- 12:04Speaker 3: someone like, I'm going back years, but like a Terrell Davis,
- 12:07Speaker 3: when he was with Gibbs, Alex Gibbs in Denver, you know,
- 12:10Speaker 3: he just had an innate feel for doing that. And,
- 12:14Speaker 3: you know, some backs are just better than others. Some
- 12:17Speaker 3: backs prefer to run inside, you know, more gap scheme
- 12:20Speaker 3: stuff where they're literally, they know, Hey, I'm going to
- 12:22Speaker 3: run off, you know, the ass as it were of
- 12:25Speaker 3: this particular offensive lineman. This is a little more of,
- 12:28Speaker 3: I've got to be patient. I've got to let it develop.
- 12:30Speaker 3: And then once I really see the spot, you stick
- 12:34Speaker 3: your foot in the ground and go, but it has
- 12:36Speaker 3: to happen way quicker than I'm saying it, obviously, but
- 12:38Speaker 3: that's what it is.
- 12:39Speaker 4: Right.
- 12:42Speaker 1: So what are you, what are you kind of looking
- 12:44Speaker 1: most for out of this new Eagles offense? Because, you know,
- 12:49Speaker 1: I think back to the Jags last year and the
- 12:51Speaker 1: first month was pretty rough as they were trying to
- 12:53Speaker 1: pick up and then they eventually got it and things sailed,
- 12:55Speaker 1: but you know, who, who does the system benefit the most?
- 12:59Speaker 1: Obviously it's, they're trying to freshen their concepts. They're trying
- 13:01Speaker 1: to get Jalen Hurts to play within a different system,
- 13:04Speaker 1: but is there a receiver, a lineman, anybody that you
- 13:07Speaker 1: think whose strengths can really be capitalized other than maybe
- 13:11Speaker 1: Devante Smith, who's just good probably.
- 13:12Speaker 3: Well, first of all, I think the O-line loves it
- 13:15Speaker 3: because the O-line there's, there's a lot less, believe it
- 13:18Speaker 3: or not, I had this conversation with Lane Johnson at
- 13:21Speaker 3: the O-line masterminds and See, Lane Johnson has spent his
- 13:24Speaker 3: whole career, and it's why, in my view, he's the
- 13:26Speaker 3: first ballot Hall of Famer and does not get the
- 13:28Speaker 3: credit that he should.
- 13:29Speaker 4: I mean, I think he's one of the best right.
- 13:31Speaker 3: Tackles ever to play the game. And I don't think
- 13:33Speaker 3: people talk about him that way. But Lane Johnson has
- 13:36Speaker 3: spent most of his career doing one-on-one pass protection. And
- 13:41Speaker 3: this is a system where there's less of that. There's
- 13:44Speaker 3: a lot more, you know, don't forget, think of it
- 13:46Speaker 3: this way. If you're going to work off the outside zone,
- 13:50Speaker 3: you know, at least mid-zone to outside zone run game
- 13:54Speaker 3: concept as your foundation. Think about the impact on the
- 13:57Speaker 3: defense in a couple of ways, particularly when you're under center,
- 14:00Speaker 3: which is the other thing that they've obviously done. And
- 14:02Speaker 3: I'm a big under center believer, by the way, always
- 14:05Speaker 3: have been. But a couple of things. Number one, the
- 14:09Speaker 3: second level of the defense, the players you're really trying
- 14:12Speaker 3: to put in conflict, they have to wait longer to see,
- 14:15Speaker 3: is it a handoff or not a handoff? So they're
- 14:19Speaker 3: longer in conflict. Secondly, even the D line, when you
- 14:23Speaker 3: do mid or stretch zone, very often their first move
- 14:27Speaker 3: is lateral, not vertical. So now in a game of milliseconds,
- 14:31Speaker 3: that's a big deal. That's a really big deal. So
- 14:35Speaker 3: it just makes it, relatively speaking, nothing's easy in the NFL,
- 14:40Speaker 3: but relatively speaking, it makes it easier on your pass protection. Now,
- 14:45Speaker 3: does every team need a drop back passing game because
- 14:47Speaker 3: when it's third and nine? Yes, of course they do. But,
- 14:50Speaker 3: you know, a lot of big plays come off the
- 14:53Speaker 3: play-action pass. You know, and then that's– I think that
- 14:59Speaker 3: most people would agree that even when the Eagles were
- 15:02Speaker 3: playing well, that their pass game very often had kind
- 15:05Speaker 3: of a maybe-yes, maybe-no feel to it.
- 15:08Speaker 4: Right? I mean, I think even, you know.
- 15:11Speaker 3: Even the most ardent Jalen Hurts lovers– and by the way,
- 15:14Speaker 3: I did a deep dive on Hurts, and I believe
- 15:17Speaker 3: he can execute this this game well, and we'll get
- 15:21Speaker 3: into that in a sec, but, but even if you're a,
- 15:23Speaker 3: you know, a lover of Jalen Hurts, you'd have to
- 15:25Speaker 3: admit that this past game, you almost didn't know week
- 15:28Speaker 3: to week.
- 15:29Speaker 4: Yeah. Right.
- 15:30Speaker 3: You know, I think that that's a perfectly fair statement
- 15:33Speaker 3: and you're trying, they want to move beyond that.
- 15:35Speaker 4: They want to.
- 15:35Speaker 3: Feel like, you know, we know what we can do
- 15:38Speaker 3: every single week and we can do it against every
- 15:40Speaker 3: single opponent. You think Sean McVay or Kyle Shanahan says
- 15:44Speaker 3: on a week to week basis, gee, I don't know
- 15:46Speaker 3: what we can do this week. They go in with
- 15:48Speaker 3: the attitude of, you know, hey, this is what we do,
- 15:51Speaker 3: and we can do it against anybody. Are there tweaks
- 15:55Speaker 3: depending on the opponent? Of course. But, you know, you're
- 15:58Speaker 3: not changing your philosophy week to week.
- 16:00Speaker 4: Right. So I would add this, though. The big story
- 16:03Speaker 4: for the offseason is the healthy offensive line. Obviously, until
- 16:07Speaker 4: they snap the ball, we're not going to know because
- 16:09Speaker 4: these guys didn't play in the preseason, though they were
- 16:11Speaker 4: in a joint practice with New England where they look
- 16:13Speaker 4: pretty good. but I think Greg told us pretty clearly
- 16:16Speaker 4: last year, the pass pro was not the problem. The
- 16:17Speaker 4: run blocking was, let's call it a problem. It was bad,
- 16:20Speaker 4: but they look healthier. They look healthier. And that's something
- 16:25Speaker 4: when we look at the run game and the stretch
- 16:26Speaker 4: element to it, seeing how they move, this is something.
- 16:29Speaker 4: And we'll ask Greg, when we do the inside of
- 16:31Speaker 4: the tape show, how they look, how they moving, especially initially,
- 16:35Speaker 4: like we'll see early on because it's a different offensive scheme,
- 16:40Speaker 4: particularly with a run scheme. How does it look? And
- 16:42Speaker 4: how does Barkley look at that? That's one of the
- 16:44Speaker 4: mysteries coming into this. How's this going to work? Well,
- 16:48Speaker 4: Greg's kind of outlined how it should look, but you
- 16:50Speaker 4: don't know how they're going to execute it.
- 16:52Speaker 3: No, that's what you don't know. But, you know, in
- 16:54Speaker 3: doing the deep dive, and I did a deep dive
- 16:56Speaker 3: both on their offense and defense this summer, and I
- 16:58Speaker 3: really obviously looked at Jalen in detail because, you know,
- 17:01Speaker 3: obviously that's the story. There are some plays, and I guarantee,
- 17:04Speaker 3: because obviously Sean Mannion's doing a deeper dive than I am,
- 17:07Speaker 3: as is the quarterback coach. But there are some plays
- 17:10Speaker 3: where you look at and you go, okay, this is
- 17:12Speaker 3: what they're going to do. There's a 26-yard completion to
- 17:16Speaker 3: Devonta Smith against the Giants week eight. Hertz is under center.
- 17:20Speaker 3: They had Latu in the offset fullback alignment, and he
- 17:25Speaker 3: did iso lead action into the line, basically inserting iso
- 17:31Speaker 3: lead run action. And Jalen threw bang play action to Smith,
- 17:35Speaker 3: perfectly timed, well done, 26 yards. I mean, you see
- 17:39Speaker 3: plays like that and you say, you know what? This
- 17:41Speaker 3: can be done because that's the kind of thing that
- 17:44Speaker 3: they want to be a foundation and a staple of
- 17:46Speaker 3: what they do. You know, there's times where they used
- 17:49Speaker 3: motion effectively last year and they caused problems for the
- 17:53Speaker 3: eye discipline because there was a lot of backfield action.
- 17:55Speaker 3: That's the reason you do a lot of backfield action.
- 17:57Speaker 3: It messes with the eye discipline of second level defenders.
- 18:01Speaker 3: There are numerous plays from last year where you look
- 18:04Speaker 3: and you say, you know what? This translates. They can
- 18:06Speaker 3: do this.
- 18:08Speaker 4: So, Greg, remember the play? It was the game where
- 18:11Speaker 4: he turned the ball over four times, but he made
- 18:12Speaker 4: that unbelievable throw. Was it to Devontae, Jeff?
- 18:16Speaker 1: Yeah, against the Chargers, I think in overtime.
- 18:19Speaker 2: Fourth down, maybe? Fourth and long?
- 18:21Speaker 4: I mean, that was an angry man throw. That was
- 18:23Speaker 4: a big-time NFL throw. I like that.
- 18:26Speaker 3: Well, yeah, it was 28 yards versus the Chargers. It
- 18:29Speaker 3: came on a high-low concept, which is a foundation, by
- 18:31Speaker 3: the way, of this offense. And it was one of
- 18:33Speaker 3: Hurts' best timing and anticipation throws of the season.
- 18:35Speaker 4: That's it. Yeah.
- 18:37Speaker 3: No, I mean, there are plays where, you know, the
- 18:40Speaker 3: biggest question to me with Jalen Hurts is not that
- 18:44Speaker 3: whether he's capable physically of doing this.
- 18:47Speaker 4: He is.
- 18:48Speaker 3: But the issue that he's had at times is he
- 18:51Speaker 3: doesn't process throws that are defined, but that need that
- 18:55Speaker 3: high level timing and anticipation. He doesn't process them as
- 19:00Speaker 3: viable throws that must be turned loose. And I think
- 19:03Speaker 3: that's the biggest question you have. Because obviously this offense
- 19:07Speaker 3: demands many more throws between the numbers, between the hashes,
- 19:10Speaker 3: and there's more bodies there. But those, by NFL standards,
- 19:15Speaker 3: many of those are clean throws. They may not look
- 19:18Speaker 3: clean because there's bodies, but they're clean. And so will
- 19:22Speaker 3: Jalen see those as viable throws? Because there's no metric
- 19:25Speaker 3: for that, by the way. That's the one thing that
- 19:27Speaker 3: no one has a metric for, throws that should be
- 19:29Speaker 3: made that aren't made. And that's the one question.
- 19:34Speaker 1: There's a Jekyll and Hyde nature to his game where
- 19:37Speaker 1: he has made sometimes the difficult throws look routine and
- 19:42Speaker 1: the routine ones look difficult.
- 19:44Speaker 4: Or not throw them.
- 19:45Speaker 3: Or not throw them.
- 19:50Speaker 1: We would highlight some of the beautiful throws that he,
- 19:52Speaker 1: that he threw, whether it was tight window or down
- 19:54Speaker 1: the field. But then the ones that he seemed to
- 19:57Speaker 1: not want to throw the most were those schemed like
- 20:00Speaker 1: five to 15.
- 20:01Speaker 2: Yard type routes where it's right there.
- 20:03Speaker 4: It's like, right.
- 20:04Speaker 1: AJ was there or bam. And he just didn't want
- 20:07Speaker 1: to throw the ball there. And like you're saying, that's
- 20:10Speaker 1: a big, big identity of this new.
- 20:13Speaker 3: Because he can do, it's not as if he's not
- 20:15Speaker 3: capable of doing this.
- 20:16Speaker 4: Correct.
- 20:17Speaker 3: You know, it's, it's, how does he, that, because that's
- 20:20Speaker 3: a question, you know, you always look at too, when
- 20:22Speaker 3: you evaluate quarterbacks, like I, obviously I do a ton
- 20:24Speaker 3: of quarterback evaluation with college quarterbacks, And sometimes it's hard
- 20:28Speaker 3: to know because you don't know how they're taught, but
- 20:30Speaker 3: how does he see the game? Is there, you know,
- 20:33Speaker 3: is he seeing it to make these kinds of throws?
- 20:36Speaker 3: Because I think that's to some degree innate.
- 20:39Speaker 4: Jeff, one thing, and it's something we've talked, the three
- 20:41Speaker 4: of us have talked about for three years where it's
- 20:44Speaker 4: almost like they coached him up to be conservative. Just,
- 20:47Speaker 4: just the like, okay. After what happened in 23, we
- 20:49Speaker 4: returned the ball over a ton of times play within
- 20:53Speaker 4: play within the system. And we'll be fine. Don't turn
- 20:56Speaker 4: the ball over. But at some point, and this is
- 20:58Speaker 4: why the Eagles or Howie and Nick decided this had
- 21:02Speaker 4: to change, particularly the head coach, to junk his scheme.
- 21:07Speaker 4: They want to, as Jeff, excuse me, Greg said earlier,
- 21:10Speaker 4: they want to move forward. They want to make it
- 21:11Speaker 4: more modern, like a lot of these great offenses. And
- 21:14Speaker 4: by the way, majority of the teams now are going
- 21:17Speaker 4: with West Coast. It is like been the rage last
- 21:19Speaker 4: five or six years. Like that, that's what, that's where
- 21:23Speaker 4: the league is going with, with timing passing game, timing
- 21:26Speaker 4: based passing game.
- 21:27Speaker 3: Don't forget, obviously Jalen Hurts is not Phillip Rivers. They're
- 21:31Speaker 3: totally different, but Nick Sirianni has that background. So he's
- 21:34Speaker 3: seen a quarterback play that way. And, you know, he
- 21:38Speaker 3: knows that that's a really good way to play, you know?
- 21:42Speaker 3: So again, we can talk about this forever, but the
- 21:44Speaker 3: bottom line is, I believe that he's capable of doing it.
- 21:47Speaker 3: I believe that it could be a work in progress.
- 21:49Speaker 3: And I hope fans, if it's not great week one
- 21:51Speaker 3: and week two, they don't think, oh my God, the,
- 21:53Speaker 3: you know, the, the earth is falling, you know, sky
- 21:55Speaker 3: is falling, but I think that it will play out.
- 21:58Speaker 3: You know, you, you made a great point, Jeff. I
- 22:00Speaker 3: thought talking about Trevor Lawrence with Liam Cohen, I mean,
- 22:03Speaker 3: you know, the first part of last season, People were wondering, gee,
- 22:06Speaker 3: what is Trevor Lawrence? Maybe he's a bust. And then
- 22:09Speaker 3: all of a sudden, whatever week it was, and I
- 22:12Speaker 3: watched every game, you just saw– because so much of it, too,
- 22:17Speaker 3: has to do with stuff that's not purely X's and O's.
- 22:19Speaker 3: You can just see sort of a confidence, the way
- 22:21Speaker 3: a quarterback drops, hits his back foot, just sees it right,
- 22:25Speaker 3: knows where he's going, and the ball comes out. So
- 22:29Speaker 3: it could take– in an ideal world, it doesn't take
- 22:32Speaker 3: a lot of time. But it could take some time.
- 22:35Speaker 4: Yeah, absolutely.
- 22:36Speaker 2: It's interesting.
- 22:37Speaker 1: You guys, I'm sure, have seen this phenomenon, right, where
- 22:39Speaker 1: person A and person B can make the same statement,
- 22:42Speaker 1: same exact statement. But if people like person A, they'll
- 22:45Speaker 1: agree with him. But if people don't like person B,
- 22:48Speaker 1: they'll disagree with.
- 22:49Speaker 4: The same statement.
- 22:50Speaker 1: And why I'm bringing that up is because I've already
- 22:52Speaker 1: brought this up with Adam on Inside the Birds, Greg.
- 22:54Speaker 2: I wanted your opinion. I recently used Sam Darnold as
- 22:59Speaker 2: an example.
- 23:00Speaker 1: Of saying, hey, if Jalen Hurts, because Adam was just
- 23:03Speaker 1: mentioning how they conservatively coached him to not turn the
- 23:05Speaker 1: ball over. And I said, well, if Sam Darnold, he's
- 23:09Speaker 1: a Super Bowl champion, and he played well last year,
- 23:11Speaker 1: but he did throw 14 interceptions. He still has that
- 23:14Speaker 1: part to his game, but he also drove the ball
- 23:16Speaker 1: down the field to Jackson, Smith, and Jigba quite a bit,
- 23:19Speaker 1: and that was a big part of their success.
- 23:21Speaker 3: In the play-action pass game, he had a ridiculously high
- 23:23Speaker 3: yards per attempt. They pushed the ball down the field.
- 23:26Speaker 2: Correct.
- 23:27Speaker 4: By the way, West Coast scheme, West Coast scheme, it
- 23:29Speaker 4: got Clint Kubiak head coach. Yeah, absolutely.
- 23:31Speaker 1: So it's funny because I've been talking about that with Jalen,
- 23:34Speaker 1: would you take a few more risky throws, potentially more
- 23:37Speaker 1: interceptions for the, for the reward of more debt, more
- 23:40Speaker 1: of a harmonious offense. And recently this exact thing, topic
- 23:45Speaker 1: was brought up on WIP. And I think Spike Eskin
- 23:48Speaker 1: was the one who said, you know, maybe it's okay
- 23:49Speaker 1: if he throws a few more interceptions, if it means more,
- 23:52Speaker 1: and everybody just because he has a reputation for being
- 23:54Speaker 1: the rabble rouser, right?
- 23:55Speaker 2: Everybody's like, you're stupid. You're an idiot.
- 23:57Speaker 1: You root against the Eagles, you know, but I actually
- 23:59Speaker 1: think in a, in an objectively way, if you can
- 24:02Speaker 1: get a better, more rhythmic offense, but it comes at
- 24:06Speaker 1: the expense of every once in a while, you turn
- 24:08Speaker 1: the ball over more than you used to.
- 24:09Speaker 4: That's okay.
- 24:10Speaker 1: If you're getting a higher reward out of it with,
- 24:13Speaker 1: better more functional passing offense.
- 24:16Speaker 3: And you know i learned this from mike martz i
- 24:18Speaker 3: was fortunate this goes back many many years when he
- 24:20Speaker 3: was the the head coach of the rams and he
- 24:22Speaker 3: invited me out to training camp and i was out
- 24:24Speaker 3: there for three days and he basically said you're a
- 24:26Speaker 3: coach you can do whatever you want sit in any
- 24:28Speaker 3: meeting sit with the coaches you know when they would
- 24:31Speaker 3: talk you know after training camp it'd be 11 o'clock
- 24:33Speaker 3: at night i'd be sitting with him you know mike
- 24:36Speaker 3: martz always said that interceptions are have to be looked
- 24:39Speaker 3: at as individual plays, not as just like a number,
- 24:42Speaker 3: you know, I have to understand why a guy throws it,
- 24:45Speaker 3: you know, because sometimes they're not, look, we all know
- 24:49Speaker 3: that quote unquote, an interception is not what you want
- 24:51Speaker 3: to do, but there's degrees of interceptions, you know, and Jeff,
- 24:55Speaker 3: I think that's what you're getting at, you know, and.
- 24:57Speaker 4: And.
- 24:59Speaker 3: Again, then it comes down to how you feel. And
- 25:02Speaker 3: I'm thinking of a coaching staff now about your team.
- 25:05Speaker 3: Like for instance, two years ago, okay. When they won
- 25:07Speaker 3: the super bowl, Obviously they were a team built on,
- 25:10Speaker 3: on a historic run game and the number one defense
- 25:13Speaker 3: in the league. So that's where your quarterback and Jalen
- 25:16Speaker 3: made some big plays. It's not as if he didn't
- 25:18Speaker 3: make any big plays, but that's where you want to
- 25:20Speaker 3: make sure that.
- 25:21Speaker 4: You don't turn the ball over. You know, it depends
- 25:24Speaker 4: on your team.
- 25:25Speaker 3: You know, you know, Joe Burrow these past and he's
- 25:29Speaker 3: been hurt, but when he plays, you know, he's got
- 25:31Speaker 3: to put up 35 points just for his team to compete.
- 25:34Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 25:35Speaker 3: Now it might be different this year. That's another question
- 25:37Speaker 3: for another conversation. But when you are in that kind
- 25:40Speaker 3: of situation, you can't be playing not to turn the
- 25:44Speaker 3: ball over. So it depends on your team. You've got
- 25:48Speaker 3: to make some throws. Joe Burrow has to make throws.
- 25:51Speaker 3: He can't throw checkdowns all game. Or he can't take
- 25:54Speaker 3: a sack just because, oh, I don't want to make
- 25:56Speaker 3: a tough throw. Jalen can take a sack when you're
- 26:00Speaker 3: on the team from two years ago. Because when they
- 26:02Speaker 3: punt it away, the likelihood is they're going to get
- 26:04Speaker 3: it back pretty quick and the score is not going
- 26:05Speaker 3: to have changed.
- 26:06Speaker 2: Right, right, right.
- 26:08Speaker 1: And one thing Adam and I have talked about, and Adam,
- 26:10Speaker 1: I still, you know, there's got to be a certain
- 26:13Speaker 1: level of patience with this offense transition and no going
- 26:19Speaker 1: back to what it used to be just because they
- 26:21Speaker 1: could win games that way in 2024 or 2025. You know,
- 26:26Speaker 1: there's no going back to the old way of doing
- 26:29Speaker 1: things offensively. It has to stay. It has to be
- 26:32Speaker 1: within what Sean is trying to do to this offense.
- 26:35Speaker 4: Right. Oh, I'm sorry.
- 26:37Speaker 3: One quick point. Look, I'm not saying that the playoff
- 26:40Speaker 3: loss to the Niners was the reason for everything, but
- 26:43Speaker 3: at the end of the day, that's a problem. You're
- 26:46Speaker 3: at home. They struggled to move the ball against a
- 26:50Speaker 3: defense that didn't have Fred Warner, Nick Bosa. And by
- 26:52Speaker 3: the way, I've already watched that side of the ball
- 26:55Speaker 3: from last night's game. And for people who watch it
- 26:58Speaker 3: on TV, I've already watched the tape. you're dealing with,
- 27:01Speaker 3: I mean, these guys immediately showed up as being two
- 27:03Speaker 3: of the best players at their position in the league
- 27:04Speaker 3: and the Niners were not playing with them in that game.
- 27:07Speaker 3: You can't, you can't struggle to score against that defense
- 27:11Speaker 3: in a playoff game at home.
- 27:12Speaker 4: Right. Yeah. And what I wanted to say off what
- 27:14Speaker 4: you brought up, Jeff, is that you got to understand
- 27:16Speaker 4: when Jeff, Jeff Lurie and Joe Banner came in 1994,
- 27:19Speaker 4: you know, they studied the Walsh system. They studied the
- 27:22Speaker 4: teams that were successful and they really studied the Niners
- 27:26Speaker 4: and they wanted a world-class offense. And you saw it
- 27:29Speaker 4: in Doug's last year. They hired Rich Scangarello. They wanted
- 27:32Speaker 4: to bring the West Coast scheme. It just didn't work out.
- 27:35Speaker 4: But this time, and by the way, the roster is
- 27:38Speaker 4: way better. Okay, way better. Yes, they don't have A.J. Brown,
- 27:41Speaker 4: but they have a good roster on offense. They feel
- 27:44Speaker 4: like this is it now. They have to be forward-thinking.
- 27:48Speaker 4: That's the whole deal here. They don't want to go
- 27:50Speaker 4: back to 1980s football. They want to have a real
- 27:53Speaker 4: passing game. Jeff and I would talk, Greg, to other teams,
- 27:56Speaker 4: and they'd watch Eagles tape last season. They'd go, what
- 27:58Speaker 4: is this? Yeah. What are you doing? Like, are you,
- 28:02Speaker 4: do you not believe in your quarterback? Why won't you
- 28:04Speaker 4: run more modern concepts? Well, it's Sirianni's offense. It's scaled down,
- 28:08Speaker 4: but they're not like you said, Jeff, they're not doing
- 28:10Speaker 4: that anymore. This is a, this is a real modern
- 28:13Speaker 4: West coast scheme with timing and it's got to happen.
- 28:17Speaker 2: Awesome.
- 28:17Speaker 4: All right.
- 28:18Speaker 1: So that, that really encapsulates what we wanted to talk
- 28:20Speaker 1: about with the Eagles offense. Now they have to go
- 28:22Speaker 1: up against the commander's defense that has a new play caller.
- 28:26Speaker 1: And I give credit, to Dan Quinn, who was a
- 28:29Speaker 1: defensive play caller and is a defensive coach, to bring
- 28:31Speaker 1: in someone, hand him the keys. And obviously, Greg, Durante
- 28:35Speaker 1: Jones has been coaching under Brian Flores in Minnesota for
- 28:39Speaker 1: a couple of years. And you would imagine that the
- 28:42Speaker 1: commander's defense is going to conceptually look like a Flores defense.
- 28:46Speaker 1: And I'm sure there will be some Durante Jones wrinkles.
- 28:49Speaker 1: But what we know about that defense is, you better
- 28:51Speaker 1: know where the blitz is coming from because it's going
- 28:53Speaker 1: to be coming.
- 28:54Speaker 4: Well, they're unique in one regard.
- 28:57Speaker 3: A couple of things we'll get into, but the bottom line,
- 29:00Speaker 3: sort of the 30,000-foot view is where Flores is different
- 29:03Speaker 3: than pretty much every other coach in the league is
- 29:06Speaker 3: he's high-percentage blitz, but almost no man coverage behind it.
- 29:11Speaker 3: It's high-percentage blitz with heavy zone.
- 29:13Speaker 4: So there are voids.
- 29:15Speaker 3: So the question is, it all comes down to picking
- 29:18Speaker 3: it up because Flores, The thing that they do, and
- 29:21Speaker 3: this is hard now. I hope people understand this is hard.
- 29:24Speaker 3: He's a big, Flores and I assume Durante Jones, a
- 29:28Speaker 3: big believer in showing six and seven man fronts. And
- 29:31Speaker 3: you've got to account for people. You can't say, well, gee,
- 29:33Speaker 3: I don't think Jeff Mosier's coming or I don't think
- 29:35Speaker 3: Adam Kaplan's coming.
- 29:36Speaker 4: And then they come and you have nobody to account
- 29:38Speaker 4: for them. You've got to account for people. Okay.
- 29:41Speaker 3: But a lot of times out of those six or
- 29:42Speaker 3: seven man fronts, he might rush three and have an
- 29:45Speaker 3: eight man zone concept behind it. And so teams sometimes
- 29:48Speaker 3: get stuck with, with max pro and only sending two
- 29:52Speaker 3: or three receivers out and there's eight in coverage and
- 29:55Speaker 3: the numbers don't work for you.
- 29:56Speaker 4: The math doesn't work.
- 29:57Speaker 3: You know, But the point is, when he does that,
- 30:00Speaker 3: you have got to make sure you're accounting for people.
- 30:04Speaker 3: Because if you're not, you're going to have negative plays
- 30:06Speaker 3: somewhere along the line.
- 30:09Speaker 1: Is that harder to do with when you're introducing a
- 30:12Speaker 1: new offense and a new blocking scheme and you've got
- 30:14Speaker 1: a new offensive line coach?
- 30:16Speaker 3: I guarantee since the schedule came out, they've been working
- 30:20Speaker 3: on this at times. Maybe not every single day, but
- 30:23Speaker 3: they didn't just start working on it this past Wednesday.
- 30:25Speaker 2: Correct.
- 30:26Speaker 4: And remember, by the way, playing Brian Flores last year,
- 30:29Speaker 4: Hurts had a huge game in Minnesota. He did.
- 30:32Speaker 2: He's had two big ones the last two times, yeah.
- 30:34Speaker 4: Geronte Jones was their PGC, their passing coordinator, in addition
- 30:38Speaker 4: to being their defensive backs coach. So he put in,
- 30:41Speaker 4: he helped with the coverages. And Greg just said they
- 30:44Speaker 4: play a lot of zone. Smitty had, in fact, the
- 30:47Speaker 4: two receivers, Brown and Smith, combined for over 300 yards. Yep. Yeah,
- 30:51Speaker 4: they had a huge game. Yep, yep. So that's interesting
- 30:54Speaker 4: because they'll know what it's going to look like.
- 30:56Speaker 3: And actually, Hurts, I think a later touchdown he threw
- 30:59Speaker 3: to A.J. Brown in that game was a great snapshot
- 31:02Speaker 3: of delivering with timing and precise ball placement. That was
- 31:05Speaker 3: one of his best quarterback plays of the season.
- 31:07Speaker 4: I remember it well.
- 31:08Speaker 3: He hit his back foot and the ball came out
- 31:10Speaker 3: because I remember stopping it. I saw it again this
- 31:12Speaker 3: summer when I did the Hurts stuff.
- 31:16Speaker 4: He literally hit.
- 31:17Speaker 3: His back foot and started his delivery and Brown hadn't
- 31:20Speaker 3: even come close to coming out of his break yet.
- 31:22Speaker 3: So Jalen is more than capable of doing these things.
- 31:25Speaker 3: It's not as if he's incapable.
- 31:27Speaker 1: Right. Also, in that game, he threw a touchdown to
- 31:30Speaker 1: Devontae Smith from a jumbo, under-center, play-action look where he,
- 31:35Speaker 1: you know, it was like the first game where they
- 31:38Speaker 1: started to really tinker with that kind of stuff, and
- 31:40Speaker 1: he threw a really nice touchdown to Devontae Smith that way.
- 31:43Speaker 3: Yeah, so, I mean, you know, they've had good success, but,
- 31:46Speaker 3: I mean, that doesn't mean that it's easy to do, but,
- 31:48Speaker 3: I mean, because you can also have negative plays.
- 31:51Speaker 2: Yeah, for sure.
- 31:52Speaker 1: So Adams made a point, you know, the Commanders, they
- 31:54Speaker 1: spent a lot of money this offseason on guys who
- 31:56Speaker 1: probably– aren't the value of what they're paid, but nonetheless,
- 32:01Speaker 1: are they upgrades over what the Commanders had last year?
- 32:04Speaker 4: Well, that's not what you're trying to do. You know that.
- 32:06Speaker 4: I mean, the numbers become the number because that's the market. Yeah.
- 32:10Speaker 3: I mean, you're talking about someone like Kalevan Chasen, who
- 32:13Speaker 3: actually had a good year in New England, but, you know,
- 32:15Speaker 3: you don't view him as like one of the elite
- 32:16Speaker 3: pass rushers in the league, but you got to pay
- 32:18Speaker 3: him if you want him.
- 32:19Speaker 4: Right, right.
- 32:20Speaker 1: And then, you know, you could say the same about
- 32:22Speaker 1: Odafe Owe, who had a nice year with the Chargers
- 32:25Speaker 1: last year. And what I really wonder, Greg, is now
- 32:29Speaker 1: that they've got Sonny Styles at off-ball linebacker and they
- 32:32Speaker 1: signed Leo Chennault, does this enable Durante Jones to use
- 32:35Speaker 1: Frankie Louvu in a much.
- 32:37Speaker 2: More advantageous way than the prior regimes were able.
- 32:39Speaker 3: To use him? Almost like an Andrew Van Ginkle?
- 32:41Speaker 2: Yeah, more of a rusher than anything.
- 32:44Speaker 4: My understanding is he's actually going to rush the passer
- 32:46Speaker 4: more because with Chennault and Sonny Styles, we're talking about
- 32:52Speaker 4: Louvu here. Frankie Lou was the guy that I expect
- 32:55Speaker 4: to rush the passer probably more than he has.
- 32:57Speaker 3: Well, in the previous regime, you know, before Jones got there,
- 33:01Speaker 3: in their dime, Lou was an edge pass rusher.
- 33:03Speaker 4: There you go.
- 33:04Speaker 3: But Lou does have the kind of traits where you
- 33:06Speaker 3: could see him being one of those, you know, jack
- 33:09Speaker 3: of all trades, you know, movable chess piece guys, you know,
- 33:12Speaker 3: like a Van Ginkle was in Minnesota.
- 33:14Speaker 4: Right, right. The guy that I really.
- 33:17Speaker 3: Like that they signed is Nick Cross. I think he'll
- 33:22Speaker 3: play the Harrison Smith role for them. And I think
- 33:24Speaker 3: he's capable of that. He's a really good player that
- 33:27Speaker 3: probably a lot of people don't know about. You know,
- 33:29Speaker 3: obviously Indianapolis is not one of those teams everybody talks about,
- 33:32Speaker 3: but he's a really, really good safety.
- 33:34Speaker 4: Greg, do you remember if Luvu, by the way, before
- 33:36Speaker 4: we'll get, we'll get their secondary and secondary, was Luvu
- 33:38Speaker 4: a pass rusher at Washington state? Do we remember that?
- 33:41Speaker 4: You know, I don't know if I did him coming
- 33:42Speaker 4: out at him. So I don't remember. He wasn't drafted.
- 33:44Speaker 4: First of all, he wasn't even drafted. Yeah. So I'm
- 33:46Speaker 4: not going to make it up and tell you. I
- 33:47Speaker 4: don't know. I just don't know. But again, Jeff, on
- 33:51Speaker 4: your point, they've invested in terms of draft capital and cash.
- 33:56Speaker 4: Kinlaw's getting paid big money. Deron Payne, they decided to
- 33:58Speaker 4: keep him one more year. Louisville guys extension a couple
- 34:01Speaker 4: of years ago. Adafio is going to make over 20
- 34:04Speaker 4: million this season. And Leo Chennault, Chasen. I mean, a
- 34:09Speaker 4: lot of these guys weren't on the team last year.
- 34:11Speaker 3: Chennault's one of those kind of, another one of those
- 34:13Speaker 3: guys that can do a lot of different things in
- 34:15Speaker 3: a defense. So they probably feel that that versatility fits
- 34:18Speaker 3: what they want to do.
- 34:19Speaker 4: Yeah. Yeah.
- 34:21Speaker 1: So, Adam, I mean, they have seven new starters on defense.
- 34:25Speaker 1: I mean, if you think about it and I go
- 34:27Speaker 1: through the list and I look at guys like Tim Settle,
- 34:29Speaker 1: Greg mentioned Chase on, you know, the draft Sonny Stiles.
- 34:32Speaker 1: Amik Robertson is, again, not an ideal outside corner.
- 34:36Speaker 2: For you, but he actually played well.
- 34:39Speaker 4: He's going to play nickel.
- 34:40Speaker 1: With the Lions, and he'll play nickel. Sanders still will
- 34:42Speaker 1: play outside. He's probably better at nickel. But I don't
- 34:46Speaker 1: look at the personnel on this defense and say it's
- 34:49Speaker 1: worse than last year. And I think it could be
- 34:51Speaker 1: a little bit better. And if they can hold the
- 34:52Speaker 1: fort down until Trey Amos gets back, then maybe they've
- 34:56Speaker 1: got something to build off of.
- 34:57Speaker 4: Well, the true– like, see, Sanders still did not play
- 35:00Speaker 4: that well last season. They don't think he was great.
- 35:03Speaker 4: He was elite or pretty close to it. He was
- 35:05Speaker 4: really good year one. Last year he dropped off. There's
- 35:08Speaker 4: that question. Is he truly a corner? Is he a nickel? Okay.
- 35:12Speaker 4: Then you got Russell Douglas who won a Superbowl nine
- 35:15Speaker 4: years ago with the Eagles. So they're not real good
- 35:17Speaker 4: at corner now. Like that's, that's that I understand it's
- 35:21Speaker 4: week one. The scores are down. Yeah.
- 35:23Speaker 3: They have Douglas and they have Fabian Moreau, two guys
- 35:25Speaker 3: that you can line up with. They don't kill you,
- 35:28Speaker 3: but you know, obviously cause they've been with so many teams,
- 35:30Speaker 3: teams always feel they can do better.
- 35:32Speaker 4: Yeah. I mean, Moreau has been with, this is his
- 35:34Speaker 4: eighth team. Yeah. Like that's, I know the Eagles aren't
- 35:38Speaker 4: going to, they're not going to be a throw the
- 35:39Speaker 4: ball team, but when they throw it, they should have
- 35:42Speaker 4: some success.
- 35:43Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 35:43Speaker 1: I mean, you just go back and look like Marshawn
- 35:45Speaker 1: Lattimore was on team last year.
- 35:46Speaker 2: He was injured a lot. He did not play well.
- 35:49Speaker 2: Will Harris wasn't a great find for them at safety.
- 35:52Speaker 2: Amos is hurt. He, you know, Bobby Wagner was still
- 35:55Speaker 2: good last year, but he was starting.
- 35:56Speaker 4: To really, he was, he was starting to lose it. Yeah.
- 35:59Speaker 1: Um, Von Miller was a starting edge. Frankie Luvo, again,
- 36:03Speaker 1: was used in a way that's going to be a
- 36:05Speaker 1: lot differently than he's going to be used this year.
- 36:08Speaker 2: I think you can make an argument.
- 36:12Speaker 1: Man, if they can hold– because Newton, their defensive tackle
- 36:15Speaker 1: is also on IR, right?
- 36:16Speaker 2: I mean, he's a pretty decent player. You can make
- 36:18Speaker 2: an argument.
- 36:19Speaker 1: They got a little more juicier guys here on the
- 36:21Speaker 1: edges to attack the quarterbacks, and that's where the Durante
- 36:25Speaker 1: Jones element comes in. Does he– Does he do what
- 36:28Speaker 1: the Eagles and commanders are hoping their new offensive coordinators do,
- 36:31Speaker 1: which is just take that personnel, freshen it up with
- 36:33Speaker 1: some schemes and make the other team fear them again.
- 36:37Speaker 1: Football is finally back and PrizePix is bringing out their

- 39:06Speaker 2: That's Q-U-O dot com slash birds.
- 39:10Speaker 4: So they've spent, again, a lot of draft capital, a
- 39:12Speaker 4: lot of cash and free agency. The talent level is
- 39:15Speaker 4: way better. But we know from working with Greg for
- 39:18Speaker 4: many years, there's all these matchups you can take advantage of. Right.
- 39:22Speaker 4: And this cornerback group, and I know Greg likes Nick Cross.
- 39:25Speaker 4: That's fine. But you look at this older group of cornerbacks.
- 39:30Speaker 4: like way older. It's funny because Adam Peters, the GM,
- 39:34Speaker 4: said they do not want to be the oldest team
- 39:35Speaker 4: in the NFL again. But with Trey Amos out, this
- 39:39Speaker 4: is what you have. Now, but the front seven, though,
- 39:43Speaker 4: is very formidable because last year they had so many injuries.
- 39:46Speaker 4: A lot of guys who are older. They couldn't compete.
- 39:49Speaker 4: I mean, Jacob Martin, who they brought out of mothballs,
- 39:53Speaker 4: remember him eight or nine years ago, he was starting
- 39:56Speaker 4: because they ran out of players. But that's not the
- 39:58Speaker 4: problem now.
- 39:59Speaker 3: And they're also counting, and again, until we play the
- 40:01Speaker 3: regular season games, we don't know, but they're counting on
- 40:03Speaker 3: Sonny Stiles to be an impact player in whatever way,
- 40:07Speaker 3: whatever that means for them. And, you know, he's going
- 40:10Speaker 3: to play. I mean, from day one, it's not as
- 40:11Speaker 3: if he's not going to play. And by the way,
- 40:13Speaker 3: Owe did have a really strong second half of last season.
- 40:16Speaker 3: the athletic traits started to translate into production. Because as
- 40:21Speaker 3: Jeff knows, you know, the guy's a freakish athlete. He
- 40:23Speaker 3: just didn't have production the way we, you know, he
- 40:25Speaker 3: didn't have sacks. But they started to translate a bit
- 40:28Speaker 3: in the second half of last season. And if he
- 40:30Speaker 3: can pick up, he truly does have the size, the length,
- 40:35Speaker 3: the explosiveness to be a bigger time NFL edge rusher.
- 40:40Speaker 4: Jeff, one thing on Durante Jones here, because he's a
- 40:42Speaker 4: new play caller. I'll never forget with Brian Flores. Was
- 40:46Speaker 4: it a Monday night game against the Eagles three or
- 40:50Speaker 4: four years ago when he, he had so many guys
- 40:53Speaker 4: in coverage. They had the lightest box you've ever seen.
- 40:56Speaker 4: And the Eagles ran all over them. Yes. It's the
- 40:58Speaker 4: unpredictability of Brian Flores. Now, because Durante Jones has not
- 41:03Speaker 4: called a game before. We don't know how much of
- 41:06Speaker 4: the craziness of what Flores is like the mad scientist.
- 41:09Speaker 4: You just simply don't. It's really cool. But you, You know, okay,
- 41:13Speaker 4: he runs a 34 front. Greg talked about zone coverage
- 41:17Speaker 4: in the back, blitzes a lot. But the way– the
- 41:19Speaker 4: disguises and the unorthodox way he does it, I'm fascinated
- 41:23Speaker 4: to see how Durante Jones looks at it.
- 41:25Speaker 1: Yeah, I think with both Mannion and Durante Jones, you
- 41:29Speaker 1: have that like– you go back to the discussion we
- 41:32Speaker 1: used to have when the Eagles would hire Jonathan Gannon
- 41:34Speaker 1: or Sean Desai. You're getting– the Fangio recipe, but you're
- 41:39Speaker 1: not getting Fangio. And obviously you saw the difference when
- 41:43Speaker 1: you got Fangio. So with Sean McVay, I'm sorry, with
- 41:46Speaker 1: Sean Mannion, are you getting McVay slash McFleur with Durante Jones?
- 41:50Speaker 1: Are you getting Brian Flores like that?
- 41:53Speaker 2: Is that the next guy?
- 41:54Speaker 1: Or are you just getting a knockoff version that just
- 41:57Speaker 1: doesn't have the mad sign?
- 41:59Speaker 3: And I think that's what you're not going to know because,
- 42:01Speaker 3: you know, when I talk to people about, you know,
- 42:03Speaker 3: different coaches, like for instance, when I talk to people
- 42:05Speaker 3: about Vic Fangio, the thing that stands out is not
- 42:09Speaker 3: that he has a scheme that, gee, no one else
- 42:11Speaker 3: can possibly do. You know, of course they can do it,
- 42:14Speaker 3: but it's the way he works through a game and
- 42:18Speaker 3: understands what's going on.
- 42:20Speaker 4: Through the game.
- 42:21Speaker 3: I'm not talking about like one play call, like, oh,
- 42:22Speaker 3: that's a great call. I'm talking about understanding how a
- 42:25Speaker 3: game flows, what the offense is then trying to do
- 42:29Speaker 3: tactically and conceptually and responding to it. You know, that's
- 42:33Speaker 3: what you don't know about play callers who've never really
- 42:35Speaker 3: done it. How do they work through a game? You know, not, oh,
- 42:39Speaker 3: that's a great call. A lot of guys can make
- 42:41Speaker 3: a great call. You know, just like in sports, a
- 42:43Speaker 3: lot of guys can have one great year and then
- 42:44Speaker 3: you never hear about him again. You know, so I'm
- 42:47Speaker 3: not talking about one call. You know, I'm talking about,
- 42:50Speaker 3: you know, having an understanding of working through a game
- 42:53Speaker 3: because you're going in with a plan.
- 42:54Speaker 4: Right.
- 42:56Speaker 3: Now, that plan may be perfect or maybe after two series,
- 43:00Speaker 3: the defense makes mistakes. and, and, and defenses don't make
- 43:03Speaker 3: major adjustments, but maybe they make a little bit of
- 43:05Speaker 3: an adjustment and you have to respond to it. Not
- 43:08Speaker 3: with one play, but with, okay, they're doing this. So,
- 43:11Speaker 3: you know what, we want to add this motion to,
- 43:14Speaker 3: you know, because that's going to really help us define
- 43:16Speaker 3: what they're doing, you know, little, you know, stuff that the,
- 43:19Speaker 3: that the fans won't necessarily notice, you know, but that's,
- 43:23Speaker 3: that's the kind of thing that I think dictates why
- 43:26Speaker 3: guys are good and bad.
- 43:27Speaker 4: Not, Oh, wow.
- 43:27Speaker 3: That's a great play call, you know, You can always
- 43:30Speaker 3: do that with any coach, pick out a great play call.
- 43:33Speaker 4: You know, it's cool, Jeff, about what Greg's saying. We'll
- 43:35Speaker 4: take it a step further is that with Sean Mannion, okay.
- 43:39Speaker 4: You and I went to OTAs training camp and we're like, we're,
- 43:41Speaker 4: there's nobody know how much Shanahan McVay, like how much
- 43:44Speaker 4: more of one scheme, whatever belief that he's going to run.
- 43:47Speaker 4: But I saw, and I thought of Greg, when I
- 43:50Speaker 4: saw it, I saw some burst motion. Cause that, I'd
- 43:52Speaker 4: never heard of it until Greg mentioned it. Cause we'd
- 43:55Speaker 4: see it. We didn't know the name of it. Right.
- 43:56Speaker 4: And I go, wow.
- 43:58Speaker 3: First motion.
- 43:59Speaker 4: That's new here. Yep. And, and Greg, you'll like this.
- 44:02Speaker 4: Cause this is where McVay comes. It's not like Shannon
- 44:04Speaker 4: doesn't do it, but I just always thought of McVay
- 44:06Speaker 4: when I go to training, their training camp in LA
- 44:09Speaker 4: is reducing the receiver because he knew that this guy
- 44:12Speaker 4: needs help. There was a lot of that in their
- 44:15Speaker 4: off season program. So much. So if you, We'll see. Now, again,
- 44:19Speaker 4: we never know until the games start what exactly it's
- 44:21Speaker 4: going to look like, but I like that when it
- 44:24Speaker 4: comes to the Shanahan-McVay stuff. By the way, our good
- 44:28Speaker 4: buddy A.J. Brown is on IR. He's going to miss
- 44:30Speaker 4: the next four games. Yeah, it's too bad. That's rough
- 44:34Speaker 4: because Romeo Donald.
- 44:36Speaker 2: Yeah, he didn't have a great game.
- 44:37Speaker 4: But anyway.
- 44:38Speaker 1: So your point, though, your point is really it helps
- 44:41Speaker 1: us transition to the other side because not only do
- 44:44Speaker 1: Mannion and Durante-Jones face the same against each other, face
- 44:48Speaker 1: that issue of, well, this is the first time I'm
- 44:50Speaker 1: really doing it in a meaningful game.
- 44:51Speaker 2: Well, so does David Blau, the new coordinator for the Commanders.
- 44:55Speaker 1: And unfortunately for him, that's got to come against Vic Fangio,
- 44:59Speaker 1: which is no picnic.
- 45:00Speaker 2: That's quite a welcome to the NFL moment.
- 45:03Speaker 1: I want you to tell us, Greg, because David Blau,
- 45:07Speaker 1: it's almost like a mirror image situation here. Like Mannion,
- 45:10Speaker 1: David Blau was a journeyman backup quarterback in the NFL,
- 45:13Speaker 1: played less time, played for a really brilliant offensive line
- 45:17Speaker 1: in Ben Johnson when he was in Detroit, has only
- 45:19Speaker 1: been a coach for two years, and now, bam, the
- 45:22Speaker 1: keys to the offense are in his hands. So he's
- 45:25Speaker 1: expected to bring this variation of a Ben Johnson offense.
- 45:28Speaker 4: How would you say that might– Well, he was also
- 45:29Speaker 4: in Minnesota too with Kevin O'Connell.
- 45:31Speaker 2: With Kevin O'Connell, right, right.
- 45:32Speaker 1: How would you say that might compare or contrast to
- 45:36Speaker 1: what we've talked about with Sean Mannion?
- 45:38Speaker 2: Cause I think there are a lot of similarities to
- 45:40Speaker 2: what they're going to do.
- 45:42Speaker 3: Well, now you get into the same question. We have
- 45:44Speaker 3: no idea how he calls a game. You know, we
- 45:47Speaker 3: also have no idea, you know, somebody does the three
- 45:51Speaker 3: of us don't, I certainly don't, you know, is he
- 45:53Speaker 3: going to take more of what he does from Ben Johnson?
- 45:56Speaker 3: Is he going to take more of what he does
- 45:57Speaker 3: from Kevin O'Connell? Is there a way to mix and
- 46:00Speaker 3: match that effectively? Cause they are a little different. You know,
- 46:04Speaker 3: these are things we do not, or I certainly don't know. And, and,
- 46:08Speaker 3: I bet Vic Fangio has a pretty good idea just
- 46:10Speaker 3: based on coaches know coaches pretty well, and they talk
- 46:14Speaker 3: to other coaches because it's a fraternity. These guys talk
- 46:18Speaker 3: to each other all the time. So I don't know
- 46:21Speaker 3: the answer to that.
- 46:22Speaker 1: Well, I guess what I was asking is what does
- 46:24Speaker 1: Ben Johnson do that is sort of uniquely Ben Johnson
- 46:28Speaker 1: that maybe we might see?
- 46:29Speaker 3: Well, here's something that Ben Johnson does that probably not
- 46:31Speaker 3: a lot of people know. He actually puts together the
- 46:34Speaker 3: run game every week. He is more interested in the
- 46:38Speaker 3: run game than the pass game as far as the
- 46:40Speaker 3: game planning element. And their run game, a lot of
- 46:43Speaker 3: people are unaware. The Bears had the third best run
- 46:46Speaker 3: game in the NFL last year. Now, granted, Caleb Williams
- 46:48Speaker 3: did have some yards, but he's not.
- 46:50Speaker 4: Like Lamar Jackson.
- 46:51Speaker 3: But their run game, and Eagles fans saw it, he
- 46:55Speaker 3: is phenomenal in the run game with his use of motion,
- 46:59Speaker 3: how he creates angles and leverage. He happens to have
- 47:02Speaker 3: two really outstanding players. run blockers on the right side
- 47:05Speaker 3: of his O-line, which is what they focused on through
- 47:08Speaker 3: the second half of the year, running behind Darnell Wright
- 47:10Speaker 3: and Jackson at right guard. But he puts together the
- 47:14Speaker 3: run game. So the question is, how will Blau see
- 47:17Speaker 3: the run game? Because if you can put together a
- 47:20Speaker 3: really good run game, you know, conceptually, you don't necessarily
- 47:24Speaker 3: need an unbelievable back. And by the way, DeAndre Swift
- 47:27Speaker 3: just signed a three-year extension. So, I mean, you know,
- 47:30Speaker 3: no one is going to say DeAndre Swift is one
- 47:32Speaker 3: of the five best backs in the league. But, you know,
- 47:34Speaker 3: he did gain 1,000 yards and rush 4.9. He and
- 47:38Speaker 3: Mnangae combined for almost 1,800 yards. So, you know, because
- 47:42Speaker 3: people are going to look at the running– the point
- 47:44Speaker 3: I'm trying to make is people are going to look
- 47:47Speaker 3: at the running backs for the commanders and say, well,
- 47:50Speaker 3: they're not very good. They don't have anybody really good.
- 47:52Speaker 3: You know, I don't know if Krosky Merritt is number one,
- 47:55Speaker 3: Rashad White's number one. I always really like Katron Allen
- 47:59Speaker 3: for what he is. I think that kind of back
- 48:01Speaker 3: is– works in the NFL. Now, do I think that
- 48:04Speaker 3: means he's a 250-carry guy? I don't know the answer
- 48:07Speaker 3: to that, but he gets tough, hard yards, and there's
- 48:10Speaker 3: always a place for that in the NFL. So I
- 48:12Speaker 3: don't know who's going to be the guy that gets
- 48:14Speaker 3: the majority of the carries, but is he going to
- 48:16Speaker 3: put together a run game? Who's the O-line coach, Adam?
- 48:19Speaker 4: Do you know? Yeah, it is Darnell Stapleton. You might
- 48:22Speaker 4: remember as a journeyman offensive lineman for the Steelers. Yeah,
- 48:25Speaker 4: I remember the name. Yeah, yeah. He's a good young coach.
- 48:30Speaker 4: Here's what I know. there was a very strong belief
- 48:33Speaker 4: if the commanders did not promote him, allow that he
- 48:36Speaker 4: would have gone with Ben Johnson and gone back to
- 48:39Speaker 4: go into Chicago because, um, Declan Doyle left to be
- 48:43Speaker 4: the OC of the Ravens. So they promoted him and
- 48:46Speaker 4: in his third year coaching, he's going to call plays. Now,
- 48:47Speaker 4: from what I also understand, they're going to be more
- 48:50Speaker 4: run based, more, more of a run philosophy. And by
- 48:52Speaker 4: the way, they run really well last season, despite having
- 48:55Speaker 4: great backs. I think they were a top 10 rushing team.
- 48:57Speaker 4: If not, I don't know. So, uh, Yeah. They feel
- 49:00Speaker 4: pretty good about it. So Krosky merit, they expect to
- 49:04Speaker 4: be the primary first and second down back. Doesn't mean
- 49:05Speaker 4: I'll have every first and second down. You're gonna see
- 49:08Speaker 4: Rashad white and pass protection. You're going to see him
- 49:11Speaker 4: in goal line. I know he doesn't have any juice,
- 49:14Speaker 4: but he's a good back. He's a good receiver. Yeah.
- 49:16Speaker 4: He's excellent. Dumped the ball down to him. Your drone
- 49:20Speaker 4: forward got hurt. So, yeah, he's not. And you've got
- 49:22Speaker 4: Katron Allen. Now, one thing to understand, Rashad White's on
- 49:24Speaker 4: a one-year deal. And Katron Allen is, I know they
- 49:28Speaker 4: really liked Allen because he's got really good size. He
- 49:31Speaker 4: kind of fits what they want. They might want to
- 49:32Speaker 4: have some sort of physical run game because he's a
- 49:34Speaker 4: big dude. And Krosky Merritt's more of a change-up, but
- 49:37Speaker 4: he's their lead back because he's explosive.
- 49:38Speaker 1: Right?
- 49:39Speaker 4: I look at this more of a committee approach. But
- 49:43Speaker 4: Greg and Jeff, as we look at this offense, this
- 49:47Speaker 4: is where it's fascinating because it's Terry McLaurin. He's their guy.
- 49:51Speaker 4: We all know that. He's really good. But after that, Diggs.
- 49:54Speaker 3: Well, Stephon Diggs is a really good veteran receiver who
- 49:58Speaker 3: really helps young quarterbacks.
- 50:00Speaker 4: That's why they brought him in.
- 50:01Speaker 3: He knows how to work in zones. He knows how
- 50:03Speaker 3: to find soft spots. Is he explosive at this point?
- 50:06Speaker 4: No. But, you know, he's– He's going to help.
- 50:11Speaker 3: I mean, you know, and by the way, he did
- 50:13Speaker 3: something last year that's rarely ever done. He caught 89%
- 50:18Speaker 3: of his targets. That's a ridiculously high number.
- 50:21Speaker 4: Right. Yeah. He loved him with Drake Mayer. He just
- 50:25Speaker 4: had a bad contract. They wanted to move on. They
- 50:27Speaker 4: wanted to. Yeah.
- 50:27Speaker 3: I mean, and look how we, look how we work
- 50:30Speaker 3: with Josh Allen is Josh Allen was becoming Josh Allen.
- 50:33Speaker 3: You know, he's always been that guy. I mean, look
- 50:36Speaker 3: what he did in Houston. I mean, he's, he's, you know, Look,
- 50:40Speaker 3: we're not talking about personality. I don't know Stephon Diggs, okay?
- 50:42Speaker 3: I don't care about that. But the fact is, as
- 50:44Speaker 3: a player, he's really helpful to young quarterbacks.
- 50:50Speaker 4: He's a possession receiver now, totally. But one thing I
- 50:52Speaker 4: want to add. The one thing that I noticed when
- 50:54Speaker 4: I was at their training camp, they took shot plays
- 50:57Speaker 4: to Traylon Burks. This is when the Dolphins were there.
- 51:00Speaker 4: I mean, it's not a great– Dolphins didn't fare very
- 51:02Speaker 4: well in that practice. But Traylon Burks was getting shot plays.
- 51:05Speaker 4: De'Ami Brown is back. Didn't work in one year 10
- 51:08Speaker 4: million with Jacksonville, but he's back. So they have some
- 51:10Speaker 4: guys who could run, and Tony Williams will eventually be
- 51:13Speaker 4: their slot receiver. They're very high on him, but there's
- 51:15Speaker 4: a pecking order. But I like Greg's point about having
- 51:18Speaker 4: Diggs as that possession guy because you need that. Yeah.
- 51:21Speaker 4: Ticket Conquo, I know he could run, but he's not
- 51:24Speaker 4: a possession receiver. Right.
- 51:25Speaker 3: No, and maybe Diggs is a guy, ideally, that can
- 51:28Speaker 3: help Daniels not leave the pocket. Maybe he'll feel like, hey,
- 51:33Speaker 3: I've got a security blanket now. I've got a guy
- 51:35Speaker 3: I can throw it to. You know, when it's third
- 51:37Speaker 3: and six, hey, if it's a seven-yard gain, you know what,
- 51:40Speaker 3: that's a first down.
- 51:41Speaker 4: Right, right.
- 51:42Speaker 2: Greg, is it difficult?
- 51:44Speaker 1: So their pass, they will have condensed formations, bunch formations
- 51:48Speaker 1: as well, just like we're expecting to see with the Eagles,
- 51:51Speaker 1: reduced splits and things. Does that make it more difficult
- 51:54Speaker 1: for someone like Quinion Mitchell to travel, as Vic was
- 51:57Speaker 1: doing with him last year, putting him on a turn
- 52:00Speaker 1: to chlorine or the top receiver?
- 52:01Speaker 4: He predominantly played boundary corner, predominantly. Right. He became their
- 52:05Speaker 4: boundary corner.
- 52:06Speaker 3: And I think that they'll probably, again, I don't know
- 52:08Speaker 3: if they'll keep doing that because now they have Reed Wolin,
- 52:10Speaker 3: who is incredibly gifted. I mean, if he plays to
- 52:13Speaker 3: the level of his traits, I mean, he's a pretty
- 52:16Speaker 3: good player. So I don't know what they'll do. But
- 52:18Speaker 3: Mitchell became the boundary corner. I don't know if they'll
- 52:21Speaker 3: use him as a matchup corner.
- 52:22Speaker 4: Maybe they will. They did it at times, obviously, last year. Yeah,
- 52:26Speaker 4: earlier in the year they did. Yeah. Yeah. I don't know.
- 52:30Speaker 3: That's a great question, you know, because Wolin is obviously,
- 52:33Speaker 3: you know, pretty darn good.
- 52:34Speaker 4: Yeah. And I'm looking forward to seeing if they if
- 52:38Speaker 4: they isolate McLaurin, if Blouse will get him on wool
- 52:42Speaker 4: and how he holds up and how the discipline is.
- 52:44Speaker 4: That's been his issue, man, is his hand discipline and
- 52:48Speaker 4: so forth. Yeah.
- 52:49Speaker 3: I have a good friend who is a scout in
- 52:52Speaker 3: the league and he was tasked this offseason as teams
- 52:56Speaker 3: do these kinds of things with evaluating every starting cornerback
- 52:59Speaker 3: in the league. And he came away, he told me
- 53:02Speaker 3: he thought Quinion Mitchell was his number one corner.
- 53:05Speaker 4: Wow. Wait, did he study all 32 teams' corners? All
- 53:09Speaker 4: 32 teams, every starting corner. 64 of them, and he
- 53:12Speaker 4: said number one. Wow.
- 53:13Speaker 2: That's pretty good. I mean, there's some good ones out there.
- 53:16Speaker 3: Well, let's say he's two or three.
- 53:17Speaker 4: The point is, he's great. He's pretty good.
- 53:20Speaker 2: Yeah, he is great.
- 53:21Speaker 4: Wait, is this guy in pro personnel or college scout?
- 53:25Speaker 4: Mostly pro. Pro. Okay, interesting.
- 53:27Speaker 2: Okay.
- 53:27Speaker 4: Awesome stuff.
- 53:28Speaker 1: Wow. You would think, to put a bow on this
- 53:31Speaker 1: offense versus defense conversation, first of all, this Eagles defense looks.
- 53:36Speaker 2: Very loaded, very experienced.
- 53:37Speaker 1: They've added Rick Willen. Yes, they'll be missing Jonathan Grenard. But, Greg,
- 53:41Speaker 1: you would think, given the offensive line issues that the
- 53:44Speaker 1: commanders already have without Tunsell, that they have to feel
- 53:47Speaker 1: that their only chance to really move the chains and
- 53:50Speaker 1: win this game is to run the ball effectively, which
- 53:53Speaker 1: we did see teams at times be able to do
- 53:56Speaker 1: against the Eagles last year.
- 53:58Speaker 3: Well, I think that– look, every team wants explosive plays,
- 54:04Speaker 3: but they're hard to get against the Eagles.
- 54:06Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 54:08Speaker 3: I think that they're going to have to feel like
- 54:10Speaker 3: they have to be able to control somewhere along the
- 54:12Speaker 3: line the way the game is played, the pace and tempo.
- 54:16Speaker 3: They're not going to win this game, in my view, 38-35.
- 54:18Speaker 3: That's not going to happen.
- 54:20Speaker 4: Correct.
- 54:21Speaker 3: You know, so– Yeah, so can, you know, barring anything
- 54:25Speaker 3: totally unforeseen like, you know, special teams touchdowns or ridiculous turnovers,
- 54:29Speaker 3: if the game is normal, you know, and again, I
- 54:32Speaker 3: guess we're going to pick the games, you know, like
- 54:34Speaker 3: we always do. But I would see this game more
- 54:36Speaker 3: as like a 2017, unless the Eagles offense is great,
- 54:39Speaker 3: you know. So they're going to have to feel that
- 54:42Speaker 3: they can control to some degree the pace and tempo
- 54:45Speaker 3: of the game. And you don't do that throwing the ball.
- 54:47Speaker 3: You do that running the ball. But, you know, again,
- 54:50Speaker 3: I had mentioned to Adam that I did a really
- 54:53Speaker 3: deep dive on the Eagles defense, you know, this offseason. And,
- 54:57Speaker 3: you know, the way the Eagles played, I know they
- 55:01Speaker 3: played a lot of man coverage last year and they
- 55:02Speaker 3: played more cover one than probably people think with Fangio.
- 55:05Speaker 3: But foundationally, they're still a quarters starting looking team. And
- 55:11Speaker 3: when you're a quarters team, you have one less gap
- 55:14Speaker 3: player in the run game. So the most important position
- 55:18Speaker 3: in a Vic Fangio scheme, and you're seeing this across
- 55:20Speaker 3: the league is defensive tackle. And the Eagles have acknowledged
- 55:24Speaker 3: that by what they paid Jordan Davis and Jalen Carter,
- 55:28Speaker 3: you know, and, and, and Jomo is a pretty solid
- 55:30Speaker 3: player too. So, you know, it's, it's hard, it's going
- 55:34Speaker 3: to be hard to run against the Eagles. I know that,
- 55:37Speaker 3: you know, there were moments last year, obviously Carter wasn't
- 55:40Speaker 3: Carter for a lot of the season, even when he played,
- 55:43Speaker 3: you know, he had injuries. Adam can speak to that
- 55:44Speaker 3: better than I, um, But D-tackle is where they put
- 55:49Speaker 3: their money. D-tackle and linebacker because linebacker is really important.
- 55:53Speaker 3: Fan Joe as well. So, you know, it's a really
- 55:57Speaker 3: important position. And the Eagles have, you know, they put
- 55:59Speaker 3: their money where clearly the Vic Fan Joe believes the
- 56:03Speaker 3: money should go.
- 56:04Speaker 4: Jeff, one thing on what Greg's talking about when we
- 56:07Speaker 4: talk about matchups in the Eagles D-line versus the Washington O-line. Remember,
- 56:11Speaker 4: you got Brandon Coleman who was replaced by Tunsell, but
- 56:13Speaker 4: he's going to start. Chris Paul is, they believe, is
- 56:16Speaker 4: a strong run blocker, not great in pass pro. Nice story.
- 56:19Speaker 4: Does the seventh runner, okay. Alec Reddy's back, but not
- 56:23Speaker 4: an athlete, power player. He's okay. A lot of what
- 56:28Speaker 4: we just mentioned here really favors the Eagles, and Greg Broderick,
- 56:31Speaker 4: their D-line is. All right.
- 56:33Speaker 1: You're leading us to how we finish this show, Adam.
- 56:36Speaker 1: You're leading us into our prediction segment. So I'm going
- 56:40Speaker 1: to start with Greg because I know he put a
- 56:41Speaker 1: lot of time into it.
- 56:43Speaker 2: Into this as always.
- 56:45Speaker 3: I almost forgot until I was just talking about the,
- 56:47Speaker 3: the score that we actually have to predict the games.
- 56:51Speaker 2: You say that every week, you know, you've been looking
- 56:53Speaker 2: forward to this. What do you got?
- 56:55Speaker 3: Well, I, again, week one, you'd never know, but I mean,
- 56:58Speaker 3: the Eagles to me, I like the Eagles. I think,
- 57:02Speaker 3: I think that the offense, and I don't know if
- 57:04Speaker 3: it's going to happen this week, but I really think that,
- 57:07Speaker 3: you know, they're going to.
- 57:07Speaker 4: Move in the right direction.
- 57:08Speaker 3: I think Jalen's going to be good in this offense and,
- 57:11Speaker 3: it's almost hard not to be good in this office
- 57:13Speaker 3: and no knock on Jalen, but I think the way
- 57:15Speaker 3: it's coached and the way it's taught and just the
- 57:18Speaker 3: way quarterbacks think about playing in the, you've never heard
- 57:21Speaker 3: a quarterback say this office.
- 57:23Speaker 4: Oh gee, I hate this office. Right. You know, you
- 57:25Speaker 4: don't hear that with this style of office. Yeah.
- 57:27Speaker 2: All these open receivers and layup routes.
- 57:29Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 57:30Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 57:30Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 57:31Speaker 3: So, I mean, I'm not saying they're going to put
- 57:32Speaker 3: up 40 this week, but I'm going to, I'm going
- 57:34Speaker 3: to pick the Eagles 27, 17.
- 57:35Speaker 4: All right.
- 57:37Speaker 2: Who's your player of the game? No, Oh, extra thought.
- 57:41Speaker 3: I forgot about that part.
- 57:42Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 57:45Speaker 2: Hey, Philly fans. Game day is stressful enough. Parking, traffic,
- 57:49Speaker 2: long lines.
- 57:50Speaker 1: We've all been there. But when it comes to your cannabis...
- 57:53Speaker 1: Camden Apothecary makes it easy. This is the dispensary for
- 57:58Speaker 1: sports fans. Just minutes outside of Philly with plenty of
- 58:02Speaker 1: free parking. You'll be in and out fast.

- 58:06Speaker 1: And they don't just care about convenience. Camden Apothecary is
- 58:09Speaker 1: all about the guest experience. Their staff makes sure you
- 58:13Speaker 1: feel taken care of every time you walk in. Plus,
- 58:17Speaker 1: they carry only the best quality cannabis at the fairest price.
- 58:21Speaker 1: So whether you're stocking up for the tailgate, the watch party,
- 58:25Speaker 1: or celebrating a big win, you know you're getting the
- 58:28Speaker 1: good stuff without overpaying. They even show love to the
- 58:31Speaker 1: community with specials for fans, students, service members, and healthcare pros.
- 58:37Speaker 1: Camden Apothecary, top quality cannabis, great prices, and an experience
- 58:42Speaker 1: made for Philly fans 21 and up.
- 58:46Speaker 3: I'm going to pick Devonta Smith.
- 58:48Speaker 4: Okay. All right.
- 58:50Speaker 2: I like it.
- 58:50Speaker 1: Devontae Smith, now the wide receiver number one for the
- 58:53Speaker 1: Philadelphia Eagles.
- 58:54Speaker 2: Adam, who wins and who's the star of the game?
- 58:56Speaker 4: I've got maybe a surprise. I've got the Commanders 13,
- 58:59Speaker 4: Eagles 20. You know what? Now, we don't have to–
- 59:06Speaker 4: I think Barkley would do really well, but this is
- 59:09Speaker 4: the guy. I like the matchups. I feel strongly that
- 59:13Speaker 4: Jay Luxon is going to have a huge game. Huge,
- 59:16Speaker 4: huge game. He is our guy. I just remember when
- 59:20Speaker 4: we made sure Greg watched his tape at Houston Christian
- 59:23Speaker 4: and Greg gave us a lowdown on what it looked
- 59:26Speaker 4: like and This guy is so prime, Jeff. The history
- 59:30Speaker 4: of our show, I don't remember there's a player who's
- 59:31Speaker 4: more prime to have a breakout season because his second
- 59:33Speaker 4: half was great. Yeah. And he is ready. He's hungry.
- 59:36Speaker 4: It's a contract year. He can be extended after the season. Yep.
- 59:39Speaker 4: So let's get started right here with J. Alex Hunt.
- 59:41Speaker 4: A little surprise. Just a quick point. Adam mentioned Barkley.
- 59:45Speaker 3: One player that I've heard from everybody in the organization
- 59:50Speaker 3: that they love as far as blocking, and particularly if
- 59:53Speaker 3: you're going to run outside zone.
- 59:54Speaker 4: Is that Tavian Wicks. Oh, really? That's good. I didn't
- 59:57Speaker 4: hear that.
- 59:57Speaker 3: Everybody talked about how physical and competitive and tough he is,
- 1:00:00Speaker 3: and that in the context of this offense, that he's
- 1:00:04Speaker 3: really an important player. By the way, I think he's
- 1:00:07Speaker 3: a good receiver, too. But, I mean, just in terms
- 1:00:09Speaker 3: of what's demanded of wide receivers.
- 1:00:12Speaker 4: Greg, he had an excellent training camp. I know there's
- 1:00:15Speaker 4: been some knocks on him. Well, he's not a 4-4 guy. No,
- 1:00:18Speaker 4: but you got to know what he is. But that's
- 1:00:21Speaker 4: a great point that Greg made because, you know what?
- 1:00:24Speaker 4: Johnny Wilson being out again? Like, they don't have a
- 1:00:27Speaker 4: lot of size at receiver, and he is the size.
- 1:00:30Speaker 4: That's it.
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: I mean, not a lot of teams work hard to
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: get their fifth receiver on the field, but the Packers
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: certainly did.
- 1:00:36Speaker 2: They got Wicks on the field.
- 1:00:38Speaker 3: By the way, his next to last year in college,
- 1:00:40Speaker 3: when they actually had a really good offense and they
- 1:00:42Speaker 3: had a terrible offense his last year, he caught like
- 1:00:44Speaker 3: 62 balls for over 1,000 yards. And if he had
- 1:00:47Speaker 3: done the same thing the next year, he probably would
- 1:00:49Speaker 3: have been a second-round pick. And obviously the whole offense
- 1:00:52Speaker 3: was awful at Virginia that year, and his numbers dropped precipitously.
- 1:00:56Speaker 3: And because he doesn't have the quote-unquote measurables other than
- 1:00:59Speaker 3: his size, he drops to the fifth or whatever round.
- 1:01:02Speaker 3: He was fifth or sixth, something like that. Yeah. But
- 1:01:05Speaker 3: he's not a bad receiver either, by the way.
- 1:01:08Speaker 2: Big year for him potentially coming up.
- 1:01:11Speaker 4: All right, Jeff. It's on you.
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: Yeah, Adam and I see it very, very similarly.
- 1:01:15Speaker 2: We have the exact same score.
- 1:01:17Speaker 3: Really?
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: I'm sticking with the one I had in my Philly
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: voice prediction, 20 to 13 Eagles.
- 1:01:22Speaker 2: I do think the offense won't be humming right away.
- 1:01:25Speaker 2: Take a little bit of time. The defense will be fine.
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: And Morrow at Jomo against that interior offensive line of
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: the commanders, I think we'll have a very disruptive game.
- 1:01:35Speaker 4: Wow.
- 1:01:36Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:01:37Speaker 4: Matchups. And I think Barkley, if I was just doing
- 1:01:40Speaker 4: offensive defense, I love Barkley in this game. I really do.
- 1:01:43Speaker 4: I cannot wait. As Greg set that up with this,
- 1:01:46Speaker 4: the zone scheme, By the way, Will Shipley, he's not
- 1:01:48Speaker 4: going to play a lot. He looked phenomenal in training
- 1:01:51Speaker 4: camp with the stretch zone. I can't wait to see.
- 1:01:54Speaker 2: If we'll be talking about him.
- 1:01:55Speaker 3: Will Shipley is one of those guys that's going to
- 1:01:57Speaker 3: play in the league for 12 years, and he may
- 1:01:59Speaker 3: never be a true starter, but he'll always be a
- 1:02:02Speaker 3: guy that someone thinks they want if he leaves the
- 1:02:05Speaker 3: Eagles because he's just a really good football player.
- 1:02:08Speaker 4: Sure.
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: I can't wait to see, Adam, when you and I
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: do the postgame show, Sunday night after the game, if
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: we're going to be talking about actually throwing the ball to.
- 1:02:18Speaker 2: The running back. So the first time.
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: I heard the tight ends, I'll just take the running backs, man.
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: That's the one thing that we've had. I mean, Dallas
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: got caught a lot of passes in his career. We've
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: talked a lot about the idea and the reality of
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: throwing to the running back that we've seen in training camp.
- 1:02:33Speaker 3: Simply could be a factor because say what you want
- 1:02:36Speaker 3: about Barkley straight line fast.
- 1:02:38Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:02:38Speaker 3: Barkley is stiff. He's not, For a receiver in the
- 1:02:42Speaker 3: past game to run, let's say, option routes and angle
- 1:02:45Speaker 3: routes and all that, that's not really his game. He
- 1:02:48Speaker 3: can get out on a wheel route and run by people.
- 1:02:50Speaker 3: Think back to when he ran by Singleton last year
- 1:02:53Speaker 3: for that, I think, 49 or 50-yard touchdown against Denver,
- 1:02:57Speaker 3: which was a schemed play because they know Denver's linebackers
- 1:03:00Speaker 3: can't cover.
- 1:03:01Speaker 4: But that's what he can do.
- 1:03:02Speaker 3: But he's not like a McCaffrey or that kind of receiver.
- 1:03:06Speaker 4: Shipley's more like that. He can turn his hips and go.
- 1:03:09Speaker 4: I remember Andrew and I saw him as a rookie,
- 1:03:12Speaker 4: and we were comparing him to Kenny Gainwell. There was
- 1:03:13Speaker 4: the one area where Chip Lee was way better, way
- 1:03:15Speaker 4: more explosive. So there's a lot we're going to learn.
- 1:03:19Speaker 4: I mean, this game we're going to learn a lot,
- 1:03:20Speaker 4: and I look forward to it. All right.
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: Just two things before we get out of here to remember. One,
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: Eagles commanders never follows the script. So we just did
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: an hour's worth of an analysis, watched there be like
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: five turnovers, three fights. Too crazy, two fans run onto
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: the field because that's what happens when the Eagles and
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: Commanders play. And number two, I would keep my eye
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: out for a trick play on the side of the
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: Commanders because Ben Johnson loves trick plays. The Eagles got
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: burned by one the last time they were on the
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: field against the 49ers.
- 1:03:50Speaker 3: The other thing Ben Johnson loves, by the way, just
- 1:03:52Speaker 3: a very quick point, he loves attacking on short yardage situations,
- 1:03:57Speaker 3: second and two, third and one.
- 1:04:00Speaker 4: He's not just, oh, let's get a first down. Right.
- 1:04:03Speaker 3: And I guarantee Vic Fangio and the staff know that.
- 1:04:06Speaker 4: But still, you've got to defend it. Yes.
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: Yes. And good luck to the commanders trying to get
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: a second and two against the Eagles defense.
- 1:04:14Speaker 4: All right.
- 1:04:14Speaker 2: Good stuff. We'll do it again.
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: And, of course, after this coming week, after week one,
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: we will have Greg on with us for two shows
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: throughout the week inside the tape where we will do
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: the Eagles offense in one show and the Eagles defense
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: in another show. next week as we recap everything that
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: happens with the Eagles in week one. That's going to
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: do it for the Inside the Birds pregame show for
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: Greg Cosell and Adam Kaplan.
- 1:04:38Speaker 2: I'm Jeff Mosher. Catch you all on the next one.
