- 1:18lot of fun. We're going to do our Adopted Me Please Pet program coming

- 1:23check out the dog for today over on our Facebook page WCHS Network on Facebook,
- 1:30you can find the picture over there description at the dog and you'll want
- 1:34to check that out because we got a nice little pooch here today that you're
- 1:38gonna want to be involved with. So you can check that over on our
- 1:41Facebook page or on social media at five ad WCHS or on mine at on
- 1:45air Coupe. Also, Jim Stron's going to be here this hour. We're
- 1:48going to talk about what's coming up on Live on the Levey. It's Hair
- 1:51Supply kicking things off this weekend. That is the tribute band for Air Supply,
- 1:55So we're gonna talk to Jim about that, Plus what's gonna be coming
- 1:57up on the levee and our special guests ho that we have in for our
- 2:00guest host Fridays. That is going to be our special guest co host today
- 2:06is Andrew Donaldson, who had joined me earlier this week to discuss this article
- 2:09in the Washington Examiner magazine on Jim Justice Today a little bit more of general
- 2:14Fair. Although it's going to have a Memorial Day flare. And Andrew is
- 2:16online with me now. Andrew, good morning, how you doing this morning.
- 2:20By the end of today, I'll be on my I think twenty sixth
- 2:22hour of radio this week or twenty fifth hour of radio this week or something
- 2:24like this. I'm ready for a little bit of a break this weekend.
- 2:29That is where your love doing radio. It's a busy weekend. And you
- 2:31know what the great thing is. It is true they don't let just anybody
- 2:35in the Palmar studios, but everybody does get to participate with this thing.
- 2:38Calling on Texan and calling the hotline. We've got so much fun because we
- 2:42get to talk about the travel weekend. It is Memorial Day weekend. We
- 2:45can talk about that busy news week. Business is good man, That's absolutely
- 2:49true. So you can start thinking about what we're going to do after we
- 2:52get after we talk to our adopt me please pet, and after Jim gets
- 2:55in here, we want to talk if you would like to call in with
- 2:59some of your Remember it's Memorial Day, if you want to memorialize someone and
- 3:01a loved one or a family member or a friend, anything along those lines,
- 3:04were more than welcome to do that. We're also gonna talk a little
- 3:06bit a little bit about road trips, something that I used to do a
- 3:08lot of Memorial Day. Not as much anymore, but I used to go
- 3:10on road trips and one of my biggest road trips ever ended up being across
- 3:15the United States. That was about a four month trip where I camped out
- 3:19and did a lot of things. That's my most epic one. I'll tell
- 3:21a little bit of a story about that one. It was about this time
- 3:23of year that I debarked on that years and years ago, twenty four years
- 3:29ago now or something like that. Anyway, we'll get to that a little
- 3:30bit later on, but we need to get over to our animal this morning.
- 3:35Andrew, did you get a chance to check out Chemi Chongga? I
- 3:38did you know? I've got five dogs and a cat plus assorted teenagers and
- 3:42supernumeraries of the neighborhood that come and go around the household. And we do
- 3:46have three long haired chihuahuas that's not to be confused with my rescue pit bull
- 3:50and the Pyrenees that we have outside, so we have the whole gama.
- 3:52But yeah, I just he could come to my house. I probably wouldn't
- 3:55notice for a week that right in. But man, he's cute, looks
- 3:59like a very very good boy. Let's bring Hannah online. She is from
- 4:02the Canal Charleston Humane Association and we're trying to keep our streak alive when it
- 4:06comes to adopting out some of these pets. Hannah, good morning. How
- 4:09you doing this morning? I'm great. How are you? I'm doing very
- 4:12well. The other voice you hear is Andrew Donalds when he's my guest co
- 4:15host this morning. Tell me a little bit about Jimmy Chonga. You can
- 4:17check out the picture Jimmy Tonga on our Facebook page. That's five d w
- 4:20chs on Facebook or at five ad w chs on Twitter. What a cute
- 4:26What a cute pup? Yeah, So, Jimmy Tonga is a female.
- 4:32She's about one year old. She is considered an adult dog, so her
- 4:38adoptions. He isn't ninety five. But she is very very sweet, very
- 4:44very playful. She prefers other commer dogs, and she has shown to be
- 4:50kid friendly with us. And we consider her to be a social butterfly.
- 4:55So that just means that in all of our play group, so we have
- 5:00we have a couple dogs that are just good with everything. They're good with
- 5:03dogs, they're good with people. They're submissive or or maybe they're not submissive,
- 5:10but they are just really nice with everyone. And they don't like step
- 5:14on anybody's toes, dogs or people or anything like that. But she's not
- 5:18fixed yet, she will be before she leaves. But other than that,
- 5:24she is a really really good dog. She walks on the leash, and
- 5:28she came in as a stray, so that's how we got her. That
- 5:32is, uh, you know, bringing in strays and finding homes. That's
- 5:36obviously part of the passion and part of emission. But but you know,
- 5:40we've had all kinds of different animals, cats and dogs mostly that we've we've
- 5:44done on this program, and we've had a good rate of adopting them out.
- 5:46But of all the ones that we've had, at least when I've been
- 5:48filling in and I've seen what Dave does, it looks like that Chimmi Chonga
- 5:51is a pretty uh not very many red flags at all, and it looks
- 5:56like this dog could almost adopted, be adopted into anyone's lifestyle. Yes,
- 6:00well she you know, like I said, she's to be kid friendly.
- 6:05But even when we say kid friendly or social butterfly, or even if they
- 6:11have never ever ever given us the red flags at all in any way whatsoever,
- 6:15and even if we know the dog, we still tell people to be
- 6:20cautious because you never know with dogs. You also want to make sure that
- 6:25if you have kids, you're teaching them the respectable respectable boundaries for dogs as
- 6:30well, so you know, other than that, I mean, she is
- 6:32a really good dog. And to give you an example on like how big
- 6:36and how much way she's about thirty pounds, he's a smaller dog. She's
- 6:41not a really big dog at all and won't get much bigger than since she's
- 6:43already at an adult. Right, very good. Probably most dogs when they
- 6:48get adopted out, I find that they seem to grow sideways more so than
- 6:51the taller yea, yeah, that's typically how it cans, especially with my
- 6:58dogs exactly. But that just means that they're well loved. I mean,
- 7:00I think that that's what the bottom line is for it. So all right,
- 7:03thought me please pet today is Chimmy Chonga. You can contact the Canal
- 7:08Charleston Humane Association. What's a good contact number for if someone is interested in
- 7:13Chimmy Chonga. Yeah, well they can call or they can even come up
- 7:18and if they want to call, they can call three or four three four
- 7:23two, one five seven six and they can speak to any of the adoption
- 7:28counselors about Chimmy Chonga or even to adopt. And if we are super busy
- 7:34or anything, we do have a text one, but I believe that is
- 7:40either on our Facebook or you can also just call it and ask us and
- 7:45we can get that all done over the phone for you. Or you can
- 7:47come up and visit with Jimmy Chonga first, which is what we always recommend
- 7:50a good thing. Yeah, so just come one up or even call us
- 7:55and we'll give you all the information about it. Well, go check out
- 7:58Chimmy Chonga and hopefully we'll get a note of the later on today that Jimmy
- 8:01Chonga has been adopted to a loving home. So we appreciate you listening this
- 8:03morning. And Hanna, thank you so much for your time and telling us
- 8:05about another pet that needs to find a forever home. Thank you so much
- 8:09for listening. I appreciate it very much. That's uh, Hannah over from
- 8:13the Canal Charleston Humane Association. This is something that we do every week on
- 8:16five ad WCHS. We I think we have one hundred percent. I need
- 8:20to ask to Dave, but I think it's a near one hundred percent adoption.
- 8:22Right. It's a good thing, you know, Andrew. Uh,
- 8:24It's something that we do every Friday. It's really it was Dave's passion.
- 8:28He's a big cat guy, but he's he's an animal lover. It was
- 8:30Dave's passion that he wanted to do something like that. I like the idea
- 8:33that we're able to find these animals homes. Welcome me into the studio,
- 8:43and now Jim Strawn is here. Want to talk to Jim transition. How
- 8:46are you? Yeah? Not too bad at all. I want to make
- 8:48sure that we get you in there. Uh, how you doing? I
- 8:50spend a lot of I love to hear I come in you a lot on
- 8:54the show with Dave that I appreciate that you guys having me on, but
- 8:58yeah, this is a great promotion. I was just on with one of
- 9:01your sister stations and we were talking about the kitty cat that was rescued from
- 9:03Patrick Street Bridge all last night or a couple of nights ago, and this
- 9:07is being adopted, going up for adoption today at noon. So I'm a
- 9:09kitty cat guy. I'm like Dave, I'm a kitty cat guy. And
- 9:13we we just actually lost our kitty cat. We're still strong with that about
- 9:18even six months ago. But this just a void and these these doggies and
- 9:22these kitty cats can add so much to a family life. They're they're they're
- 9:26just precious to have. So yeah, we we love our track record here
- 9:28of getting these guys adopted. Our special co host this morning, you don't
- 9:31see m Jim because he's one zoom. Andrew Donaldson is with us Andrews the
- 9:35morning. Andrew. I know of Andrew, Yes I do, And I
- 9:37appreciate the shout out this morning on Twitter, but yes, this is you
- 9:43know. I have a lot of favorite Daves Coop. I have so many
- 9:46favorite days throughout the year, but this just might could be maybe it opening
- 9:52opening day, Opening night of the Moses Auto Group. Live on the Levee
- 9:54is tonight six thirty. Will start some music down at Haddad River Fron Park,
- 10:00the Schoenbaum Stage or will Come Alive. This is our twentieth anniversary of
- 10:05Live on Levy, but it's our nineteenth season because we all know what happened
- 10:09in twenty twenty. So yeah, so we're launching our nineteenth season special thanks
- 10:16to the City of Charleston Mayor and all her team, Matt and Ben,
- 10:18Jane Mirandon, Tina and Ray Ray and many others. Tonight is Veterans Night.
- 10:24We also have fireworks at nine thirty special thanks to Brewer and Company,
- 10:28Lou Windell and the Health Plan. And of course we do this Levy great
- 10:33cause for great time, great fun for a great cause, and we help
- 10:37those five inner city charities each and every Friday night with a fifty fifty drawing.
- 10:41But at six thirty, I know you're wanting to hear what the music
- 10:45is. At six thirty, good friends of mine from Ashton, Kentucky,
- 10:48the Chase, will take center stage. They'll play for sixty minutes the Chase
- 10:52has been around for literally over forty years together. Wow. Scotty Martin is
- 10:56the drummer. John is the lead. They've been together for forty years.
- 11:01They play a lot of rock stuff Queen Journey, Pink Floyd, The Beatles,
- 11:03YouTube, Rolling Stones, all the cover stuff. You'll know every song.
- 11:07People who love to dance to them. They've done lots of fairs and
- 11:11festivals around the Tri State area and they they're really fun. And then they
- 11:16just set the table for seven forty five taken center stage. There another fun
- 11:20band called hair Supply. When I first heard about Hair Supply, I thought
- 11:24it was kind of a tribute band or or they played all the Air Supply
- 11:30songs. But they're not anything like that. They're just a hair band from
- 11:33the eighties who like to rock. There's about six members and they have coop
- 11:39a lot of hair. Some of them is their real hair and some of
- 11:43them is not their real hair, but they wear lots of hair. They're
- 11:46just fun guys, six guys. They just have a rock in a good
- 11:48time. I think the weather's going to be perfect tonight, about seventy five,
- 11:52seventy seven, low humidity, nice breeze off of the Majestic Canal,
- 11:56River had Dad river Front Park, tons of food, Bend, there's beverage
- 12:01vendors four points by Shared and will be serving your favorite adult beverages music for
- 12:07three hours and then come for the music in the food, but stay for
- 12:09the fireworks at six thirty. It will be six about No, No,
- 12:13No, nine thirty. Fireworks at nine thirty, pretty pretty sharp at nine
- 12:18thirty, right after the last song. So yeah, come down unofficial beginning
- 12:22of our summertime you Coop. I know you've been down there plenty times.
- 12:26Oh yeah, you love it. You're a music guy. You love being
- 12:28part of it, right, Oh, absolutely, it's it's I love how
- 12:31it. You know, you have the two acts that come on there.
- 12:35Everybody's out there and it just depends when the acts that are going to be
- 12:37there. But people are always dancing. They're up, they're dancing in the
- 12:41aisles, or dancing down in the in front of the stage, or dancing
- 12:43back behind things, or if you need to take a break and take a
- 12:46few steps back. There's vendors all along there where you can get you something
- 12:48to drink, walk down. I mean, I always find that it's a
- 12:52great time and really looking forward to it. Andrew Donaldson is originally from the
- 12:54area. Have have you had a chance to get to the life of the
- 12:56Living at all? I haven't been to that one specifically, but this is
- 13:00radio. See. You need to describe the abbiance because this is such a
- 13:03great facility and a great place to do this. You have the river right
- 13:07there people everyone was seeing tim. You have some kind of concert event,
- 13:09you get all the boats to come up to the weather is going to be
- 13:11good for that. Just kind of describe it for people, because we kind
- 13:13of take it for grand people just drop bys like, oh, I wonder
- 13:16what that is, but along the river. Describe the actual ambiance this thing,
- 13:20because this is also laid back. You can dance and stuff, but
- 13:22you can also bring your family just kind of relax. This is a little
- 13:24more low key than maybe like going to the Civic Center and going to a
- 13:28big concert or the stadium. Just kind of describe it for people that haven't
- 13:31been there yet. And Andrew had asked you. Unfortunately, Jim, I'm
- 13:35not listening in. Sorry, No, that's okay, that's okay, just
- 13:37some translation coup no. No. Basically, Andrew just asked you to set
- 13:41the scene a little bit. If folks haven't been there before. It's right
- 13:43next to the river. It's gorgeous. Used to get to see the sunset
- 13:46during the course of the concert. When it's a really nice night, you
- 13:50get a nice little breeze, even on hot nights. Boulevard probably four or
- 13:54five six blocks, enough room for the food vendors, enough room for four
- 13:58vehicles from Autogroup. They are the presenting sponsor, Thank you to Moses.
- 14:03They've been with us for fifteen years. Tonight is Ford Night, so there'll
- 14:07be four Ford vehicles there. Part of Moses Autogroup about twenty or so food
- 14:15vendors, adult beverages, other charities that may be there. We do a
- 14:20fifty to fifty drawing for the charity. Tonight is Mano Meal. Through the
- 14:22summer we also help our CCR Canal Valley Collective, sojourn Or Shelter and the
- 14:28Covenant House. We've raised about one hundred and ten thousand dollars the previous eighteen
- 14:33seasons through kindness through these people that support this, so you know they'll be
- 14:37volunteer selling fifty fifty tickets. You're right, there's just there's just music and
- 14:43food and It's a nice segue what you were talking about, Coop, and
- 14:46to set the table a little bit more, Andrew, I stand on that
- 14:48show and bomb stage, and I'm humbled and very honored to serve as your
- 14:52master of ceremonies and hosts for the Live on the Levy. This will be
- 14:56my seventeenth season to do that. But one of the things that I I
- 15:00do is I look up into the audience and sometimes there's ten thousand people there,
- 15:03and do we get a nice crowd? I think the record is like
- 15:07it somewhere between eighteen and twenty thousand. They were everywhere. But we typically,
- 15:11you know, have anywhere from four to five to eight to ten,
- 15:13sometimes twelve thousand. It's a big, big, big, big night.
- 15:16And my goal is to always look for someone not having a good time,
- 15:20And in seventeen seasons, I haven't found that. No matter what kind of
- 15:26week or day you're having, or a month or a year, you come
- 15:28down to the Levy for Live on Levey. You can't help, but tap
- 15:31your foot. You can't help, but smile. You can't help, but
- 15:35get a bite to eat. You can't help, but you'll find your neighbors.
- 15:37You can't help but you sit there on a blanket and just have a
- 15:41great, great time with free music. The city does a great job.
- 15:43This is a destination as well. It's not just for our Canal Valley peeps.
- 15:48People come in from all over through Charleston soccer tournaments, what have you.
- 15:52They come in for Live on Levey and maybe happenstance or accidentally and they
- 15:58come out there and they're like wow. And they stopped me because I'm the
- 16:00host, and they're like, wow, Jem, you guys do this every
- 16:03Friday. I'm from Charlotte, or I'm from Indianapolis, or I'm from Saint
- 16:07Louis and we're just driving through and I'm here to tell you, you guys
- 16:11have it going on. So it's it's a boatload of fun, no pun
- 16:14intendent. That's another thing I like to do. Stand on the back of
- 16:17the show and bomb stage and look out in the Canal River and I count
- 16:19the boats that I can physically see the records. One hundred and fifty eight
- 16:22boats. Man. That is good stuff, and that's a lot. I
- 16:27absolutely love. Hope that's it the scene Andrew just a little bit. Yeah,
- 16:30that did a good job. That's good stuff. Jim we really appreciate
- 16:33it. I'm gonna I'm gonna run, gotta I know you gotta go.
- 16:36But yeah, I see everybody tonight. I'm music at six thirty with the
- 16:40Chase, and then at seven forty five hairs supply, lots of food,
- 16:42lots of drink, bring your friends, bring your family. Will see you
- 16:45down at the Levity to night. Thanks, Coop, appreciate it. Man.
- 16:48That is Jim Strong talking about Live on the Levee, And of course
- 16:51you can you can check out the all of the acts that are gonna be
- 16:52live on the Levee this year, Live on the Levey Charleston dot com.
- 16:56Live on the Levee Charleston dot com. You can check it out over there
- 16:57anytime. I want to get injured on as my guest co host this morning.
- 17:00And we'll take a break here in just a moment. But Andrew has
- 17:03a new piece up in the Fayteville Fayeville. Tim's right, Yeah, yeah,
- 17:08I knew it was. I knew it was one of the traditional names,
- 17:11one of those two exactly the Faville Tribune, and I read it last
- 17:15night. This is um, you know, a memorial Day piece reminding folks
- 17:18that you know, it is okay to have fun, obviously, I mean,
- 17:22but also a little respect for where we are in the United States and
- 17:25how we got here. Yeah, it's just one of those things where you
- 17:27know, it is a Memorial Day weekend. This is let's be honest,
- 17:30this is the official start of summer for most people. Kids start getting out
- 17:33of school, weather starts getting nice. We do need to just take a
- 17:37minute and remember why this is Memorial Day. This holiday goes back to you
- 17:41know, post Civil War and binding the wounds of the country up after that
- 17:44horrific conflict. And there's been a lot of a very high price paid for
- 17:48us to have the freedom. So it's completely appropriate that we enjoy all those
- 17:52freedoms, but we also need to take a few minutes somewhere in there to
- 17:55appreciate how we got them. The people that served, especially for Memorial Day,
- 17:59the ones paid the ultimate price for by giving their lives in the service
- 18:02of our great country. We can do both things, and in fact,
- 18:04I think it's best that you do both things because it keeps the perspective of
- 18:07it. Yeah we can remember, and yeah we can enjoy it, and
- 18:10the two things go together, and we should keep it that way when we
- 18:11do a holiday like this. Yeah, I couldn't agree with that more.
- 18:15And one of the things I would like to offer invitation for today for folks
- 18:18that are listening, you can either you can write in if you want on
- 18:21the text line three or four nine three five five zero or zero eight that's
- 18:23presented by Fruit Pharmacy, or on our phone line, the Bigley Pickley Wiggly
- 18:27phone line three or four three four five fifty fifty eight three four five fifty
- 18:30fifty. That number has been the same for years. Give us a call
- 18:33this morning if you want to, if you want to memorialize someone, if
- 18:36you want to, if you want to pay tribute to someone, you're more
- 18:40and welcome to give us a call this morning. Another thing I want to
- 18:41talk about a little bit. We'll take a break and we'll come back and
- 18:44talk a little bit about this as well. It is to kick off of
- 18:45the summer. A lot of folks to go on vacations, road trips and
- 18:48things like that on the summertime. I want to know what your epic road
- 18:52trip, either one that you've taken or one that you've had planned. Let
- 18:55me know what your epic road trip is You can give us a call today

- 22:07to give us a call on that as well at three rough four, three
- 22:10four five fifty eight fifty eight. Andrew, I know that you're a military
- 22:12veteran yourself, but is there someone that you would like to memorialize? With
- 22:18Memorial Day coming up, I'll tell you a really cool story of getting to
- 22:21do what I do. I usually do a thread every Memorial Day and sometimes
- 22:25Ventnor's Day. Two of the cemeteries. I mentioned it in the Pac American
- 22:27Battlefield Monument Commission where they keep the official cemetery, especially the overseas ones.
- 22:33You know, it's amazing you go to somewhere like Normandy where they're you know,
- 22:34some of those guys. That's as far as they got a couple hundred
- 22:37yards from the beach, and they're buried there Luxembourg where people like Patton or
- 22:41Burry, but you go to these big cemeteries. I put out that thread
- 22:45one year and I mentioned that my great uncle, who my mom is,
- 22:48actually a namesake of Fred Hughes. He was a War two vet and was
- 22:52killed in Korea. And I just mentioned that, and he's buried at Rosecrans
- 22:56National Cemetery out in San Diego. Well, I just mentioned that on Twitter
- 23:00and I put that thread out and somebody actually sent me a picture of his
- 23:04gravestone from Rosecrans and said, hey, is it this Fred Hughes? And
- 23:08it was. So it's interesting when you memorialize somebody, or you talk about
- 23:12family members or loved ones or friends or whatever. That person just saw that
- 23:17on social media and they were there and they found the headstone and sent me
- 23:19a picture of it. And how cool is that. I love stories like
- 23:22that, And it's amazing how in this gargantlin country state world that we how
- 23:27village has always seemed to be formed somewhere or no, you always find your
- 23:30village somewhere. It's amazing how how these stories can play out like that.
- 23:36Yeah, it is, and it's in the opposite is true too, because
- 23:37we have the big nation. You know, you go to somewhere like Arlington,
- 23:41you can just feel it, you viscerally feel it walking around Arlington.
- 23:44But then a very good friend of mine who was killed in Iraq in two
- 23:47thousand and four, Antoine Holt, he he's buried in Atlanta in a civilian
- 23:52cemetery, but he has the military headstone and it's and it's really it's it's
- 23:56almost amazing how that just the simple white headstone and it says, you know,
- 24:00as the date April two thousand and four, purple heart rack and but
- 24:04it sticks out because it's in the civilian cemetery. But then when you just
- 24:07see the roads on the roads and the roads of the white ones and the
- 24:10crosses and the headstones ross hit you in different ways, but they always hit
- 24:15you. And you know, obviously because I served it hits me a certain
- 24:19way, and because look, I can go to Arlington and see names that
- 24:22I know that hits you different too. But I encourage anybody we have We
- 24:26now have two cemeteries for veterans in West Virginia one right there in the valley
- 24:32and the other one up in Grafton. If you've never been to one,
- 24:34you need to go one. You owe it to yourself and you owe it
- 24:37to your country. Just walk through there and just let it kind of absorb
- 24:41into you, like, Okay, this freedom isn't free things a nice slogan,
- 24:45But when you walk through those headstones and you see it, it's going
- 24:47to hit you different. And I think it's a good experience for people to
- 24:49have. I really believe that, you know. I mean, the serving
- 24:55in the military, as far as percentages of certain age groups is not as
- 24:59high as it once. You're less likely if you're if you're from Generation Z
- 25:03to know someone that that was in the military. Uh, it's less likely
- 25:08that you're that your mom or dad was in the military. I mean all
- 25:11of these things. Danny Jones was in here yesterday and and talking about how
- 25:17you know politicians that used to be like one of the main things you got
- 25:19to find somebody that that previously served as a veteran that's no longer really becoming
- 25:23a mainline thing. I don't know that it necessarily has to be. I
- 25:27understand that we lived in a very world. But I think that that that
- 25:30the youth and the folks that maybe haven't been part of these generations of understanding
- 25:37exactly what the sacrifice means. There does need to be sort of a a
- 25:41and it's not a jingoistic thing. There needs to be a rediscovering if just
- 25:45what importance that is and in the place that it takes for our position in
- 25:49history, because without any of those historically going all the way back, the
- 25:52United States doesn't exist to where it is today. And it's it's a constant
- 25:56struggle, but it's something that I think that that folks, especially maybe on
- 26:00the younger side of things now need a little bit of a historical context.
- 26:03We are a very unique country and that we have such a tiny percentage of
- 26:07our people that actually serve in the middle. It bounces around a little bit,
- 26:11but it's always just under a right around one percent of the populations either
- 26:15active duty, reserve, or you know things like that. That that's a
- 26:19staggeringly small number. The number of people that are connected to active duty troops,
- 26:25even if you include all the families, only like two percent three percent.
- 26:27So the burden for defending our country is always a very very small and
- 26:32because we have an all volunteer military, it's even smaller than a normal country,
- 26:37especially a country of our size, and it really doesn't sink into people
- 26:41like how few Americans really carry that load. But you know, now we
- 26:45have the technology. Now we have social media things like that, Folks can
- 26:49It's something I put in the piece for fayet Tribune. You can go to
- 26:52a Faytribune dot com ray right now front page. You can buy it if
- 26:55you're in the Faytaville area. People need to take a minute, and this
- 26:59all technology we have in the palm of our hand with these phones. Take
- 27:03a couple of minutes this weekend and you know, watch a documentary. You
- 27:04know, I like watching those old history documentaries. Right they used to run
- 27:07the I don't know if they still do. Remember T ANDT. They used
- 27:11to just do like war movies all Memorial Day weekend in the old cable day.
- 27:14Drake, watch a memorial. Look up some of these people. Look
- 27:18up, there's man, there's We've had medal of honor winners and really famous
- 27:21West Virginians that served. If you want to just do local history, spend
- 27:23a little time on this stuff and you can use the technology, and then
- 27:26you can talk to your kids, and you can talk to those younger generations
- 27:30and kind of install it that way. Because they're smart and they're clever,
- 27:33and they want to know this stuff and they've got the technology to do it.
- 27:36We should just encourage it, like, hey, just go on line
- 27:37and read up some of this military history and I think it'll start kind of
- 27:40taking care of itself a little bit. But yet, that percentage of people
- 27:42that serve it's always going to be small. That's a blessing to our country
- 27:45in a lot of ways, but it also means we got to work a
- 27:47little hard to make sure everybody knows about it. Yeah, I think that's
- 27:51a that's a very salient point. And you're welcome to call in this morning
- 27:53as well if you want to share some of your thoughts or some of your
- 27:56memories of loved ones on Memorial Day. More than wealth and that also would
- 28:00love to hear your epic road trip, the wanting you have planned or one
- 28:03that you took in the past. I know Andrew you have some plans coming

- 31:00You're listening to five EVE on w c HS, the Voice of Charles and
- 31:03Andrew Donaldson our guest co host. Today, I'm gonna talk a little bit
- 31:06about road trips and also about Memorial Day. You can call in at three
- 31:08or four, three, four, five fifty fifty eight. You can text
- 31:11in at three or four nine, three five five zero zero eight. Andrew,
- 31:14we've gotten a few text messages during the break here. You want to
- 31:15help me go through these a little bit. Absolutely, all right, let's
- 31:19see. First of all, all these get political. But that's okay,
- 31:25I said, if you want to get politics involved, and we can do
- 31:26that on this Memorial Day. Remember that Oath Keepers and Proud Boys were convicted
- 31:30of seditious conspiracy for their role in the January six attacks. Also remember that
- 31:33disgraced Trump Senator Michael Eisnger, Senator Mike Stewart's delegate Chris Pritt, and Patrick
- 31:41Morrissey stopped the steel Warner. I think January six riders are political prisoners.
- 31:48I mean, there are a lot of things going on with the stop the
- 31:52steel and the January sixth thing and stuff like that. A lot of folks
- 31:56can't have honest conversations about that day. I mean, we've got all the
- 32:00courts tank Like the guy yesterday he got eighteen years because he was one of
- 32:02the guys. It's on video. It's not like he had he's like,
- 32:06Oh, no, we're gonna overthrow the government. We're gonna do this.
- 32:07We're armed. If we need to go get our weapons, we'll go get
- 32:09Yeah, he needed to go to jail. There's a vast majority of people
- 32:13who got nuisance notices, they did, you know, probationary things things like
- 32:16that, because they were just doing minor of fences. There's a wide spectrum
- 32:21of this stuff with people that there is people that just got caught up in
- 32:22it. There is people that didn't do anything badly illegal but just shouldn't have
- 32:28been there in the first place. And then there's that small minority of people
- 32:30that really want to start a whole lot of trouble and the laws coming down
- 32:31on him. We got to be able to purist through all that stuff to
- 32:36the you know, you're talking about a thousands of people here. The people
- 32:38that got caught up one of the people who may be made an awest mistake,
- 32:40and then those are the people that are really bad people really trying to
- 32:44start pretty Yeah, they should have got him an eighteen year prison since,
- 32:45and I'm glad he did. Yeah. That was the odd thing about that,
- 32:50of course, is is at what point do you do you just disbelieve
- 32:53everything? Are you disbelieving every grand jury, every judge, every every court
- 33:00of law in the land. Are you just do you disagree? I mean,
- 33:02do you just think it's it's all conspiracy, that it's all because there's
- 33:05a lot of people that's serving a lot of time right now. I tend
- 33:07to believe people when they're under oath. And every single one of these people,
- 33:10with like three exceptions out of the thousands some cases, now almost all
- 33:15I'm said, I understand now I shouldn't have done it. I'm sorry,
- 33:16I wish I hadn't have done it, And then they'll blame somebody else for
- 33:21it, almost every single one of them, so they know, you know,
- 33:22the court brings out the truth and almost all of this it's not that
- 33:25the court can't sometimes get overstepping. That does happen, but free through these
- 33:30court documents. They're all public record. You can get the truth yourself.
- 33:31You just work on a little bit. And you got to know, there's
- 33:34something up with with the difference between when somebody does their cable news hitting,
- 33:37when somebody's under oath, and when their stories change considerably funny how that happens,
- 33:40it is, it's amazing. And which one do you think it's closer
- 33:43to the truth? Right? I take the court room most of the time,
- 33:46with a few exceptions. So that's the way that that's the way that
- 33:50that's those lead out. Sometimes go to the next one here from the three
- 33:52or four two zero six. Can I ask please do not refer to Memorial
- 33:57Day as a holiday or say happy Memorial Day. It is a day of
- 33:59abserve evans to remember an honor. Don't get me wrong. Have your cookouts,
- 34:02laugh, enjoy family, friends and fireworks, but please make sure you
- 34:05remember why that you have that cookout with your friends and family. Make sure
- 34:08that your children know why. Thank you, May God bless and always be
- 34:13with our military, their families, and our nation now and forever. Yeah,
- 34:15fair enough, I'll take that. I the way I use it,
- 34:17you know, writer, I do deal with words for you know my day
- 34:21to day living the holiday weekend and then the holiday day itself. I've already
- 34:27talked about this a little bit. We can do both at the same time.
- 34:29But yeah, you need to have a reverent thing in there somewhere.
- 34:32But yeah, it's a holiday. Go have fun, enjoy yourself, because
- 34:36if we don't enjoy the freedoms we were given, you're kind of missing the
- 34:38point of the sacrifice in the first place. There's a balance there, absolutely,
- 34:42But yeah, I appreciate that. I've got no problem with it at
- 34:45all. I'm going to bounce off this just a little bit and that I
- 34:47understand the sentiment here, and I don't disagree with the sentiment. However,
- 34:50I will say that it's actions that speak louder than words. If you call
- 34:52something a holiday, but you're properly respectful and you understand the gravitas of the
- 34:58situation, I don't think there's anything wrong with calling it, with referring to
- 35:01it as a holiday, because personally, you're you're you're doing things the right
- 35:05way, and it kind of it kind of dovetails into a discussion that Hobby
- 35:07was having earlier this week on talk Line, where they were talking about vulgarities
- 35:12and and uh and cussing, and there was so many people that were responding
- 35:15to that with their clever words that they used to substitute for those things,
- 35:21you know, the fudge or whatever it might be. You know, I
- 35:23mean, those are perfectly acceptable words to say, and I totally get it.
- 35:27However, my thought is sort off, if the point of not cursing
- 35:31it's not the word is it Isn't it the feeling that's attached to the word.
- 35:37So if you're if you're just if you're just substituting the word and you
- 35:39still mean what the word that you're substituting means, what's really the point.
- 35:45Yeah, language is a complicated thing because there's so much more to it than
- 35:50just the word itself. There's nuance, there's facial expression. I'm somebody I've
- 35:55had to work a lot of you know. My family was as like,
- 35:58your body language is really strong, so I can say something completely you know,
- 36:01benign. But because I have I have a big mannerisms or something,
- 36:05people think you're angry when you're not, just because you stand up quick or
- 36:07you slam something down or whatever. You know, there's so much that goes
- 36:10into it. Besides just the word itself. We pretty much socially acceptable to
- 36:15know what we should and shouldn't say, though, so a lot of this
- 36:16is people kind of pushing their limits a little bit. Let's be honest about
- 36:20it. But you know, I think it's like you just said the other
- 36:22thing, the actions, not the words. How's it coming across? Why
- 36:25are you using you? Why are you doing it? That's going to be
- 36:29way more important than the word itself in a lot of cases. And uh,
- 36:32yeah, I think that that. I think that that. I've always
- 36:36been fascinated by that with folks that talk about with the use of certain words,
- 36:40because if your intent is the same regardless, I think that that's pretty
- 36:44I think that's a pretty interesting difference. We also have let me see where
- 36:46did this loss of text here? Oh this is interesting. I'm trying to
- 36:50get some information about it now, but I'm having a hard time getting an
- 36:53update as this as this texture obviously is. Andrew, I don't know if
- 36:57you've heard anything about this, but what is the status of the West Virginia
- 37:00Runs Hall of Fame? The legislature created it in the session before last,
- 37:02but I've not heard anything since. I haven't heard anything, since this is
- 37:07something that came out. Man, we probably need one because we have one.
- 37:09This kind of came up when Woody Williams died last year and they got
- 37:13brought up again because he was the guy for West Virginia veterans for decades and
- 37:16decades and decades and I was honored actually got to write one of the obituaries
- 37:21for Washington examin Or when he did pass away. So this this was something
- 37:24that kind of came out of that. I don't know the details of it.
- 37:28I'm all for it West Virginia. When you looking through military history,
- 37:31we've we've carried a heavy load per capita of people that have served. We've
- 37:37had Medal of honor winners. We have people you know even now serving you
- 37:40know our National Guard units. I have served with distinction and continue to do.
- 37:45So I'm all for it. I don't know what that would take.
- 37:47I know they passed some legislation about it, but like everything else, you
- 37:50gotta physically go do it, even if you get it approved. I'm all
- 37:52for it. I hope they get it done. And then there's other things
- 37:54like you know, getting the getting the traveling wall a permanent home. I
- 37:58think that's fantastic, and I'm glad they're getting so these these are all things
- 38:01we have to pay attention to year round, not just on the Moral Day
- 38:05or Veterans Day or on Force's Day like we had a couple of weekends ago.
- 38:07By the way, it looks like the only information I can find.
- 38:09And then this is from bike in January, Woody Williams was Governor. Justice
- 38:14enshrined him is the first member of the West Virginia Veterans Hall of Fame.
- 38:17But that's kind of where we are. It's a House Bill forty four h
- 38:21six, which lays out the guidelines of what the Veterans Hall of Fame would
- 38:24be. But there has been that I can find. There's been no brick
- 38:29and mortar movement or any like board put together anything along those lines. It
- 38:32exists out there as a thing that's going to happen, but it doesn't look
- 38:36like If somebody has any updated information on this, I'd love to have it,
- 38:38But as of right now, it doesn't look like there's been any major
- 38:40movement forward on the West Virginia Military Hall of Fame. So this would be
- 38:45that's perfect. They'll leave a post it on the screen there for day when
- 38:46he comes back, because he talks to all these heavy hitters baggage true here
- 38:50on five eighty Live. I bet you he can figure this one out for
- 38:52so leave a memo. I will I'll put I'll put a post it note
- 38:55up here, and we need to get this figured out because that's kind of
- 38:59a it's a neat thing or something that we need here and I think would
- 39:01be interesting and better for us if we had it up and running. Listening
- 39:07to five eighty Live this morning. Andrew Donaldson is my co host a guest
- 39:10co host this morning. You can get in on the phone lines if you'd
- 39:14like at three or four, three, four, five fifty fifty eight.
- 39:15We've been getting a lot of text in this morning at three or four nine
- 39:16through five five zero zero eight. I promise. We talked a little bit
- 39:20about road trips. Have you been what's you've been in the military, so
- 39:23you've traveled a lot, But as far as as a doing civilian things and
- 39:28road trips, is there any particular one that you like to go in and
- 39:30they don't have to be long sometimes you know, like a favorite two hour
- 39:34drive or something, or sometimes it's a vacation. Do you have something that
- 39:36you kind of zen out too when you drive. Yeah, I drive driving
- 39:40long drives and all of those things that called me down anyway, So I
- 39:43love to do it. You know, I've got about an hour and a
- 39:45half two hour run to the beach from the North Carolina house, so I'll
- 39:47do that all the time. I'll drop my favor because like we're going to
- 39:50the sunset on the beach, We're gonna get up early and catch sun runs
- 39:52of the beach. I've done that. I'll tell you one of my favorite
- 39:53road trips I ever got to do. And I've lived out West and I've
- 39:55lived all over the world, so I've done a lot of these. We
- 39:59had a summer we flew out to San Francisco and then drove the Pacific coast
- 40:02all the way to Vancouver. Oh yeah, and it was nineteen ninety six.
- 40:06And the reason I remember it was nineteen ninety six. We were in
- 40:08We drove to Vancouver and then came back down to Seattle. We were sitting
- 40:12in the Seattle Airport Seatach Airport, and because of the time difference, that
- 40:15was the day that the Olympic Park bombing happened in Atlanta. So we were
- 40:19sitting in the airport watching the coverage of that. I've just never forgot it,
- 40:22but that was an amazing trip. We drove the you know, almost
- 40:24all the Pacific Coast Highway from San Francisco all the way up to Vancouver,
- 40:29and people never been to Vancouver, Cana that are looked it up. It's
- 40:30one of those places where you can sit on the beach and see snowcapped mountains.
- 40:32It's just a beautiful, beautiful city. That's one of the really sticks
- 40:36in my mind. I lived in Vegas, I've drove cross country multiple times,
- 40:39like you have. This is a big country, go out and see
- 40:43it. It just it blows people's mind. And then I've gotten into drive
- 40:45all over Europe because i lived in Germany twice, so I've been very blessed
- 40:47with the road trip. But that one always sticks out in my mind because
- 40:51you have a historical event that happened, and then also just the you know,
- 40:54there's just very few places in the world like driving the Pacific Coast of
- 40:58the US. You know, Highway one Pacific goes to Highway. It's famous
- 41:00for a reason. It's it's incredible and the first time that I drove across
- 41:04the US and and man, if you have the opportunity to do this and
- 41:07you've never traveled significantly outside the state, something along the I did a combination
- 41:10of camping and motels depending on where I was. I traded everything that I
- 41:15owned for camping supplies. So I had I'd rented a house at the time.
- 41:21I had had a girlfriend. We decided to give away everything that we
- 41:24had, so like everything that I had in my house, I traded my
- 41:28stereo for a tent. I mean, I mean literally it was no cash.
- 41:30But I prepared myself for the road, very kind of a hippie type
- 41:32of thing to do in a way. But I went camping for months,
- 41:36and man, there is nothing like when you're driving and you've only been in
- 41:39I mean, I've been in most of the states at this point in time,
- 41:42most of the states in the mid Atlantic. And you know, I
- 41:45wasn't non traveled. I'd gone to New York every year for years. It's
- 41:47not like I've never been anywhere. But when you point that car west and
- 41:51you just keep driving and you see state after state after stating even and other
- 41:54places in the world, these are like different countries, you know, different
- 41:58terrains, different people that you run in to different different regional flares. It
- 42:01is incredible when you go from you know, kind of our region, then
- 42:06you drive across the plains and then you start seeing like the rocky mountains on
- 42:08the horizon. You get past that and you get into more of the Pacific
- 42:12Northwest or whatever. It is a huge country, and nothing gives you more
- 42:15respect of this country than actually going through it. Sometimes nothing I'll give you
- 42:19perspective, like driving cross country. I remember the first time, I think
- 42:22we were driving to Colorado or somewhere like where you spend a whole day driving
- 42:24in Kansas, and the mountains don't get a closer, you know. It's
- 42:28just one of those things you just have to really experience. We were out
- 42:31in Denver back last fall and my youngest daughter went out there with us.
- 42:37We went to a family wedding and I was trying to explain because she's kind
- 42:39of too little to really remember Vegas for a while. I like it just
- 42:42when you go out west in the country, the sky looks different. It's
- 42:45bigger. It really does look bigger. It's hard to explain. And you
- 42:47can see like three or fourth thunderstorm rolling around. It's not like West Virginia
- 42:51really just sneak up the valley and hits you. You can see them moving
- 42:53around. It's a big, big world out there. I cannot encourage people
- 42:57enough to get out and travel. You will. I have never regretted going
- 43:00on a trip. I've regretted not going on trips, but I've never regret
- 43:04That's one of those things like I'm pretty frugol with my money. That's something
- 43:06I spend money on. I was like, you will always remember trips.
- 43:08Your kids will always remember your trips are. That's good family time. Doing
- 43:12stuff like that. Cannot encourage people do it enough. When I was camping
- 43:15in the desert and brewing some coffee like on an open fire and then just
- 43:19sitting there and watching like a thunderhead coming in from the masa or something.
- 43:22To me, even thinking back to it right now, I get a little
- 43:24bit of that free zone feeling that could just a little bit. It's just
- 43:28it's just awe inspiring to be sitting there and something like that. Yeah,
- 43:31you get up in the mountain and look, I love my West Virginia mountains.
- 43:34I'll be there here at the seat and I'm leaving, coming back up.
- 43:37I'll be up in Somersville all weekend. There's something about those mountains out
- 43:40west where it's higher. When I was in Vegas, I go up top
- 43:43of Mountain Charleston all the time. Those mountains just blow your mind. Then
- 43:46somewhere like you go to Europe and the Alps and you're driving down through southern
- 43:50Germany and just all of a sudden, it's like this massive rock wall coming
- 43:52at you, very different from the hills and mountains we have in West Virginia.
- 43:57It's an amazing world. Get out and see it. And this is
- 44:00one of those weekends. This is one of the busiest travel days of the
- 44:01weekend of the year. I cannot encourage people enough to get out too.
- 44:06And just in West Virginia, there's so much. We really do have a
- 44:09great state park system. State parks are very affordable. It doesn't cost anything
- 44:14to drive to them and walk around either. Just go walk around. There's
- 44:16woods. We just take it for granted in West Virginia. How beautiful it
- 44:20is, how preserved it is, how little footprint mankind really has in the
- 44:24state West Virginia when you think about it in a big picture way. I
- 44:27used to joke when i'd fly home at night, I know I was almost
- 44:29home because you look down and the lights would stop, and then it just
- 44:31be like little ribbons of lights insteads of spread out those things. Don't take
- 44:36them for granted. Get out there, do things, enjoy it, and
- 44:38take somebody with you. Very good. Andrew Donaldson my guest co host this
- 44:42morning. Let's go ahead and go to the fund lines before we have to
- 44:44go to our break, and John is on the line from Nightshore. John,
- 44:45Good morning. How are you doing this morning? Pretty good? How
- 44:49thy you get more time? Maybe you can do a show on Woody Williams.
- 44:54You read the book called Flamethrower? Yeah, yeah, I wrote.
- 45:00I read it because I had to do a piece on his. Uh.
- 45:02I wrote one of the obituary pieces for him. And you cannot make Woody
- 45:07Williams more herogue than he was with a flamethrower. Both the guys that were
- 45:12tending him were both killed in action. He was wounded. He changed out
- 45:15flamethrowers multiple times. He kept doing highly recommend people to read his book on
- 45:20that. It's amazing. Well, the god wrote the book. They kind
- 45:24of had a mutual agreement. This Gooby Woody's autobiography and he's gonna get paid
- 45:29a little bit of money. And the guy got mad at Woody and tried
- 45:32to turn it into stolen valor type thing. And then the guy is a
- 45:37good book. But the guy contradictory himself all over the place. He called
- 45:40wood a hero, then he compared him with other people. Was this totally
- 45:45ridiculous? But anyway Gul could reread it or something. Maybe we haven't talk
- 45:51about it sometime. Sounds good, John, I appreciate it. Thanks,
- 45:54thanks for calling in this morning. Okay, appreciate I appreciate that. John.

- 48:22HS the Voice of Charleston. Andrew Donaldson's with me as our special guest host.
- 48:27I wanted to get through a final couple of our texts this morning.
- 48:30Let's see what is the importance of those who sacrifice their lives in Iraq or
- 48:34Afghanistan. Perhaps gen Z has grown up. Andrew's gonna be good at answering
- 48:37this because this is uh. He's a veteran during these during this time,
- 48:40perhaps gen Z has grown up watching the military be sent to war for corporate
- 48:45interests and decided that it's not for them. And how the VA and Congress
- 48:49are terrible to veterans. The politicians of the last twenty five years have been
- 48:53horrible to veterans. No wonder no one wants to serve in the military.
- 48:59That's an over exag They're having some recruiting issues, but some of that is
- 49:01because of the triol, and people do see how our government behaves itself,
- 49:06and yes, that does affect things, But on the other hand, there's
- 49:08just issues that need to be done. I just spent yesterday about almost ninety
- 49:13minutes on the phone with the people doing the Burnpin information gathering. They finally
- 49:16got around the columny. We've been in almost twenty years now trying to get
- 49:20the burn pit stuff, and I finally had my thing with that yesterday.
- 49:22So it moves very, very slowly. That's an overexaggeration. People want to
- 49:27be proud in their country, but our government and the people like us that
- 49:30need to hold our government more accountable, we could do a better job with
- 49:32that. That probably fixed a little bit of that, and some of that's
- 49:35on us. And last one, just briefly, we have about two and
- 49:37a half minutes left here. Let's see from the three or four two zero
- 49:40six. You can burn down cities and destroy mom and pop businesses and not
- 49:45even be taken into custody. But don't they're parade inside the people's house and
- 49:47not touch a thing. Because your face was on video and your credit cards
- 49:51showed up, the DJ will spend two years tracking you down all the way
- 49:53across the country and drag you out of your home. Before you comment on
- 49:57this, I'll just say one hundred and twenty federal arrest from the it's twenty
- 50:00twenty, one hundred and twenty federal arrests from the rights of twenty twenty,
- 50:02hundreds of state arrests from the rights of twenty twenty. You got to get
- 50:07outside of your news buddle, Yeah a little bit. Look again, Yes,
- 50:12there's people that just got caught up in it and just walked through and
- 50:15didn't do any damage. It didn't cause any mayhem, wasn't looking to hurt
- 50:16anybody. Yes, that's absolutely true. But then we know because these court
- 50:20cases there was a there was about twelve to fourteen people that really were trying
- 50:23to do some really bad things, and there was a couple hundred people that
- 50:25got carried away and did do damage and stuff like. You can read through
- 50:29this. Don't just read a headline. You can read every single one of
- 50:31these court cases and get get yourself informed on what it is. If you
- 50:35break the law, you need to get punished by the law. Sorry,
- 50:37that's just the way things work. Yeah, and a lot of that too.
- 50:40This is a whole different discussion. But I have a friend that lives
- 50:43important for Portland, for example, and so when all this stuff was going
- 50:45down in Portland, I just reached out to him, was like, hey
- 50:47man, what's going on? And he happened to be live streaming and I
- 50:51caught some of his live streams of one night. People don't real people talk
- 50:53about how entire cities were burning down. There were cities all across the country
- 50:57that were just burning down, and Portland, for example, it was like
- 50:59a four radius that the police funneled everybody into to control that four block radius.
- 51:05I'm not saying it was like that in every city. It's just people
- 51:07get twisted up in their narratives a little bit. Yeah, the image is
- 51:10worth a thousand words, but sometimes you need a couple thousand words to put
- 51:13the image in perspective. I did a whole show with two gout one guy
- 51:16that worked a block away from that. He's an attorney, good friend of
- 51:20mine. He's like, yeah, it's bis all this one little thing.
- 51:22Careful, careful with your news intake. You need to make sure you're getting
- 51:25a wide perspective on things, because no, it's not all bad news.
- 51:29There's good news too, but even the bad news, let's keep it in
- 51:31perspective a little bit. If it's fitting perfectly into what you already think,
- 51:35that's kind of a red flight for you, Like maybe I need to step
- 51:37back and look at this a little differently. Well. I hope everyone has
- 51:39a does a proper remembrance a Memorial Day. Enjoy your weekend and your Monday
- 51:45off. Most people were going to have that. I'll be back here this
- 51:47afternoon at three h six for a hotline with Day Weekly Andrew Donaldson, my
