- 1:19for today's episode of the Adventures of Philip Marlow. Original air date March nineteenth,
- 1:26nineteen forty nine, and the title is The Dancing Hands. They were
- 1:32born at the same hour on the same day of the same parents, and
- 1:34they were identical in beauty and talent. Only one was deadly, but the
- 1:38other was not. And I couldn't tell which was which until I found a
- 1:42green purse, a fresh corpse, and a pair of dancing hands. From
- 1:48the pen of Raymond Chandler, outstanding author of crime fiction, comes as most
- 1:52famous character as CBS presents The Adventures of Philip marlow Now with Gerald Moore starred
- 2:07as Philip Marlowe. We bring you tonight's exciting story The Dancing Hands. The
- 2:22telegram I found stuck in the mail slot when I got back to my office
- 2:24after a long and round about day red and closed find a fifty dollar money
- 2:30order. I want you to investigate a man. A table is reserved for
- 2:34you with a saddle club where I work. Come in time for the second
- 2:38show at eleven. Important was signed Beth Tyler. So at a quarter to
- 2:43eleven, With fifty bucks worth of inspiration behind me, I drove over the
- 2:46Kowenga Freeway and Outventier to the Saddle Club, which pretended to be Old English
- 2:51by showing its beams through a flagstone facade. I went in the carefully roughewn
- 2:55oak door, and even before my eyes became adjusted to the cozy lack of
- 3:00candlepower inside, Neil Redmond, owner and operator of the Place Glide, had
- 3:04taught me sporting his genial pose smile, which tonight was even more false than
- 3:08usual. Oh, it's been a long time. Isn't this a pleasure?
- 3:12For It's always a pleasure to come to the Saddle Club, Neil. I've
- 3:15even got a reservation. You know my food better than that mother does.
- 3:21Don't let it get it off. When you come on, I'll find the
- 3:23table out front. I wanted to see this show para twins in a twin
- 3:25piano act. That's sensational. Yeah, median Beth Tiling. Oh, houses
- 3:30fine. Incidentally, Edie will be the one on the left, well,
- 3:34the twins, what's the difference? Funny? He maybe missus Redmond one of
- 3:38these days, but I wanted on the poon. Sir, I get the
- 3:40number, George and I'll call back. This gentleman said you would talk to
- 3:44him, Sir, it is mister Paula all sit Oh yeah, yeah,
- 3:49excuse me, Mollo, this is important. Redmond reacted from the name Cedar
- 3:53like a punch in the nose. But I figured that was none of my
- 3:54business, which was more than I could say for a flatty, dull faced
- 3:59character. The next table, who followed the nightclub owner all the way out
- 4:02of the room with a pair of watery red eyes, which she deliberately avoided
- 4:06turning in my direction. But at that point an MC stepped out on the
- 4:10stage, and so I stopped worrying about Flappy in favor of the first look
- 4:14at my client. The Sad Club is it sticking show a beave featuring the
- 4:20incomparable piano, stylist eat and dancing dancing hands cheering your ladies and gentlemen,
- 4:26bring them up. The curtains parted on the stage set with an oversized full
- 4:31length mirror which reflected a grand piano, a black vase of yellow flowers,
- 4:35and a tall brunette with a ry, crisp voistline, who touched up a
- 4:40piled high hairdo, put on a pair of long black gloves, checked her
- 4:43hemline, and sat down at the piano, and she ran through an involved
- 4:46arpeggio while her reflection in the mirror looked on in admiration. It was an
- 4:51old but cute routine, and the illusion was perfect because the toilet's wings were
- 4:57practically identically took a I have a look at Flabby, whose face was pushed
- 5:01up in a nasty leer. He stood out, dropped his cigarette into his
- 5:04drink, and tossed a crumpled bill down on the table. Just as the
- 5:09lights went out for the trick part of the act. On the dark stage,
- 5:13two pairs of purple hands danced over two glowing silver keyboards, which would
- 5:16have been good excepted the pair of hands on the right, which belonged to
- 5:18Bed, suddenly stopped in midair and hit blue notes like a nine year old
- 5:24at their first recital. When the lights came up again, my client's face
- 5:28was as white as middle Sea, and the flabby character, using a victorious
- 5:31smile, was on his way to the door. Well. They wrapped it
- 5:34up fast after that, and Beth ran into the wings, leaving Dye to
- 5:38take the bow along. The band took over in a hurry and brought things
- 5:42down to normal. So his couples moved down to the dance floor and George
- 5:46the way to head it to my table. I sat back and waited for
- 5:48that message for my clio. You are the compliments of the Hawks. Oh
- 5:53thanks, any message with us, no, sir, just said mister Van
- 5:56to the lead. Oh thanks, George, I said to the Devil's got
- 6:00you, and wondered if I should take the initiative and contact my client.
- 6:02When the message I've been waiting for came, good in loud. I jumped
- 6:06up, shut my way through the gaping dances. In the dressing room hallway
- 6:10behind the stage, a gang of club personnel was bunched in front of a
- 6:13door obviously locked. Label Edy and Beth Tyler. It's one of the twins,
- 6:18she screamed. We got to get in that doors lit right of time.
- 6:21But I have ay. It's Edie's a hole. She's all right,
- 6:31he her on, give her a chance. Come on outside, everybody beat
- 6:34It means you too, Come on out. You're all right now, come
- 6:40on, sit down and tell me what happened. I don't know for sure.
- 6:45I was worried about this. I came back and didn't see her anywhere,
- 6:49and I heard a noise in here. It was dark. I came
- 6:54in. Someone grabbed me. Man, Yes, I don't know who it
- 7:00was, I screamed. He knocked me down, then locked the door.
- 7:05Got out through the window. There. Who are you? I'm Philip Malo,
- 7:10a private detective. His sister hired me to investigate a guy. I
- 7:14was to meet her here after your number and find out about it. Any
- 7:16idea? What's up? No? I can't imagine, but gee, Beth
- 7:21has been terribly upset ever since last night? Oh what happened last night?
- 7:26Well, for one thing, my purse was stolen, But I don't see
- 7:30why that should upset her. See there was nothing in it but twelve dollars
- 7:33in my makeup stuff. Where's Beth naughty? You know? No, I
- 7:38haven't seen her since she ran off the stage. I'm not even sure she
- 7:42came in here. Now she was here, all right, she dropped one
- 7:45of her gloves. You're still wearing both of yours. Where do you girls
- 7:48live? Maybe she went home? Well, Beth has a cottage out on
- 7:51Hazel Team forty one seventy nine. They don't live together. How come?
- 7:57Well, gee, mister Marlow, he was working with Beth is hard enough.
- 8:01She's so sarcastic. Okay, wear my thick skin. And one more
- 8:07thing, Tyler, do you happen to know where Neil went? Neil's gone?
- 8:11See that's funny. He always tays, toll the place closes. Oh
- 8:16he must be coming right there. I'll take a look, and then I'm
- 8:18going out to see his sister. Sarcasm at all. I spent ten minutes
- 8:28questioning the help on the whereabouts of the boss and got nothing but double talk
- 8:31for answers. Since I was still carrying BET's glove around with me, I
- 8:33dropped it in my pocket and went outside to my car. I'd opened the
- 8:37door and slid fine enough under the wheel, so I couldn't back out before
- 8:41I realized that the dull faced flag was already there on the seat, his
- 8:46right hand wrapped around something blunt and menacing in his sloppy jacket pocket. You
- 8:50better come on in. Are you doing in my car? Blah blah?
- 8:52Boy, don't get sassy, no, mister, And the name is Sippy.
- 8:56That's no improvement, that's no answer, all right. I saw you
- 9:01inside making with a big talk, so I says to myself, he's an
- 9:05interested party. I should look him up. Maybe we can do business together.
- 9:13Stay over there. My kind of business, in particular about the gutters
- 9:18I crawl in. It has to do with the twins inside there. You
- 9:22can get in touch with me later further details. I got an angle,
- 9:28mister, you'll see when I leave. Eh. When you try to work
- 9:33that angle, you got to the wrong twin in the dressing room. Do
- 9:35you know then? I don't know what you're talking about. Okay, Sippy?
- 9:39Why can I reach you? You'll find out if you really know what's
- 9:41up. Don't try to follow me, though, I'll be seeing it.
- 9:52When Sippy slid out of the car and beat it, I made one move
- 9:54after him and then stopped cold, because lying on the seat where he'd been
- 9:58sitting was a green the handbag with the name Edie edgeton it. I snapped
- 10:03it open. It had been stripped of everything, with the set of a
- 10:07mire and a smudge slip of paper that read number nine Arrow Motel, lancash
- 10:11And Boulevard. So that was Sippy's address, and he had the stolen purse.
- 10:16But the why of all the commotion over twelve missing bucks was still the
- 10:18number one question mark. I figured the best place for an answer to it
- 10:22was it Beth Tyler's. So I drove out the Hazel team. But even
- 10:26before I stopped at number forty one seventy nine, I heard the piano.
- 10:31I walked to the door and stood there on moment listening. I eased it
- 10:37open, slipped inside soft indirect lighting accent of the figure of a girl at
- 10:43the piano. The little waves of iridescent crimson chased themselves over the smooth satin
- 10:50gown as she played glossy blue black hair fell to he shows the side of
- 10:58a burning cigarettes had a single plume of smoke into the still air. That's
- 11:03for a moment, I found it difficult to remember that she was my client.
- 11:09Oh you're you're looking better bed you're Philip Marlow. I suppose, Yeah,
- 11:16I dropped by to return your glove, among other things. Just put
- 11:20it there on the table. The other one, Where did you get it?
- 11:26Marlo? You're dressing room at the club. Your sister tangled with an
- 11:30identified man who was hiding there after you left. While we're on that,
- 11:35why'd you shove off so fast? I was scared? How do you know
- 11:37i'd find you? You're a detective, remember, Look, if you want
- 11:43to burn up your retainer playing hide and seek at your business, who's the
- 11:48guy you want me to check on, the flabby one who made you blow
- 11:50up tonight? Yeah? Yeah, that's right. Why? Because I think
- 11:54my sweet twin sister is mixed up in something a little more serious than her
- 12:00usual scatterbrain escapade, and the flabby guy is in on it because he has
- 12:05a green purse? Right? How did you know that he left it with
- 12:07me? Name? Miss Sippi lives at the Arrow Motel Number nine knows something
- 12:13worthwhile about this business, and he's anxious to sell it, all of which
- 12:16puts him my Hopskip and a jump ahead of your detective. And tell me
- 12:20why is everybody, including Neil Redman, all wound up over one stolen purse?
- 12:24What's it all about? Baby? I don't know. Baby. Suppose
- 12:30you find out and tell me would never anything to do with the fact that
- 12:33Neil loves his sister and you love Neil Marlow. I hired you to investigate
- 12:37a man, not to pry into my personal affair. You'll get more for
- 12:39your money that stopped holding out on me. It's my money. Besides,
- 12:45I'm not holding out, believe me. I'll try real hard. Ever,
- 12:52since I've got something out courting. Where are you going now? My retainer
- 12:56entitles me to know, doesn't it. Yeah? And first of the club
- 13:01defined Redmond and get his side of it, and then I'll probably dropping on
- 13:05our chum the city at the Arrow Motel on Lancashire. Good. I'll keep
- 13:11a light in the window for you, sweet. I also keep your door
- 13:16lighted from the inside. Baby. As I drove down the dog winding straight
- 13:24toward Ventura Bulevard. I caught a flash in the rear view mirror of a
- 13:26station wagon behind me. Looked like a tail, so I opened up,
- 13:31but it stayed with me. When it swung out into the left lane to
- 13:35pass, it suddenly cut in front of me. I channed on the brakes,
- 13:37and the spotlight slashed in my eyes and on my front wheel banged against
- 13:41the curb. I was already half out of the car, set up right
- 13:43with you. Off, fella, don't come on in splosure, I'll drop
- 13:46you. He switched off the spotlight. I saw I face the texture of
- 13:50a dorm at over an embroidered purple shirt and orange tie. He had hand
- 13:54tooled high heeled boots on and was tapped off by a ten quart cream colored
- 13:56stetson. But the door mat face was grim and the silver barreled cold pistol
- 14:01in his hand looked right at home. I followed you away from the shaddle
- 14:05cloud. I don't know what your game is or why you're missing around and
- 14:07what don't concern you, but I aim to find out mighty quick. Shall
- 14:09start talking. Okay, First, I resent being crowded off the road.
- 14:13Second, I res had a spotlight in my face. And third, I
- 14:15don't like pistols pointed in my stomach, So cool off, Jesse James,
- 14:18you're wasting your time, and mind you got it wrong. Their friend Paul
- 14:22see that, don't waste his time. And you're gonna find that out all
- 14:26see that? Eh, don't tell me you're all excited over a stolen purse
- 14:30with twelve bucks in it. Twelve dollars. Yeah, listen, clown,
- 14:33there's thirty grand mission somewhere between redmen and me, and I'm gonna get it
- 14:37thirty thousand. Yeah. Redmond's a high roller and that's okay with me.
- 14:41But he lost at Fans Square and I joined over Nevada and I've been holding
- 14:43his marker as much too long. So if I have to chalk that dough
- 14:46off the experience, it's going to be a pretty unpleasant experience for a certain
- 14:50party. Get me, Yeah, I get you, But you're shoving the
- 14:52wrong way, long horned. Somebody's trying to make a fool out of me,
- 14:56bright boy, and I don't stand for that, unliabler shovel lo and
- 15:00hard, So don't get on the foot. You're sure to get stipped on.
- 15:05So long, dude in just a moment, we'll return to the second
- 15:22act of the Adventures of Philip Marlowe. But first, Tomorrow marks the anniversary
- 15:26of an important event in American history, the signing of the first peace Treaty
- 15:30between the Indians and the Plymouth Colonists. In commemoration of these events, CBS's
- 15:35Sunday Night stars Amos and Andy will be found with the Kingfish bearing the hatchet
- 15:39deeper than ever in their hopes and dreams, and CBS's own Jack Benny will
- 15:45be back again tomorrow with his special guest, Van Johnson. Invite some friends
- 15:48over, sit back and enjoy the Jack Benny program. You can hear Amos
- 15:52and Andy every Sunday on most of these same CBS Network stations and Jack Benny
- 15:58over them all now with our star Gerald Moore, we returned to the second
- 16:03act of Philip Marlowe and tonight's story The Dancing Hands. When the Texan from
- 16:17Nevada galloped off and his trustees station wagon, I forgot all about Neil Redmond
- 16:22and headed instead Pissippi and his further details at the Arrow Motel on Lancashire,
- 16:26where Bungalow nine turned out to be an all alone green and white collection of
- 16:29cladwood that showed light a half open door, and nobody home to my knock.
- 16:33When I tried knuckles on wood again and still got only a faint echo
- 16:37for reply, I stepped inside. There, in the center of an ivory
- 16:41white throw rug and clamoring for attention like an only child at a family reunion.
- 16:45Was a wide and wet circle of red. From there, the ugly
- 16:51spotches that narrowed as they got farther away, trailed off until finally, in
- 16:55the next room, the path ended where I expected it to, the quiet
- 16:59form of skipping, sprawled over an upset chair and holding his hands tight against
- 17:03the red on his left side. When I got to him, he was
- 17:06going fast, thirty grand lot of dough. I didn't know I was shooting
- 17:15that high. And the twins one wat sippy, one of them. Did
- 17:23one of them do this? Oh he's dead. His name Mamo, Yeah,
- 17:34yeah, Redmond, he's very dead, all o, Mollo. I
- 17:38only fought him a few seconds before you did. And the rest of that
- 17:41run I heard someone coming. You didn't want to be seen, so he
- 17:42ducked back out of sight. Huh. I don't buy it, Redmond,
- 17:45because for one thing, it's too pat for another. How do you explain
- 17:49being here in the first place. Come on fast, Okay, I'm here
- 17:52because I'm in a nasty jet like what like thirty thousand dollars I've got to
- 17:56pay in the next hour to a guy named Paul Sedo was running out of
- 17:57patients in a hurry. Believe me, but that I do. I've already
- 18:00met the gentleman right now, Redman, we're talking about Sippy. Okay,
- 18:06last night I had things to do, so I gave ead Tiler the money
- 18:08for the payoff the seater. A couple of minutes after she stepped out of
- 18:11the club, somebody roughed her up and got away with a purse and the
- 18:14thirty grand ar el liar, Redmond to yourself told me that personally had twelve
- 18:18bucks in it. How come simple? Like model in my business, you
- 18:22have a yell copper too soon or too love? It doesn't pay now.
- 18:25Look for the third time, Redmond, you and Sippy? How do you
- 18:26figure? I don't know he was at the club tonight, acting funny.
- 18:32He left. I got a glimpse of des green purse sticking out of his
- 18:33top coat pocket. Later on, I saw him run away from the carney
- 18:37of the club, so I followed. I ended up here a couple of
- 18:41minutes behind him, and that model was a truth, I sweat. Would
- 18:45you do at the drop of it? He wait a minute, look,
- 18:48if you're telling the truth. I began to get a different picture. By
- 18:52that, I specifically mean the very talent is a very sly name named Beth
- 18:56Tyler. Oh no, why not? Because you love Beth's too, they
- 19:00said, Redmond. It doesn't add up any other way. Sippy here couldn't
- 19:03have stolen that person meeting. He did it. I taken his down blow
- 19:07and not spent his time putting out feelers. But on the other hand,
- 19:10if Sippy happened to see Beth take it for me, he empty it and
- 19:11toss it away, We've got another story, right, because he wouldn't make
- 19:18a move until he knew how much he had gotten away with exactly. But
- 19:22there he ran into trouble because he was trying to get close to Beth,
- 19:26and then doing that he got mixed up and went for reedy instead, Like
- 19:27tonight at the club. Sure not dying man's words. Just now about one
- 19:32twig which you can add the unpleasant fact that I personally ran off at the
- 19:36mouth when I was up at Beths an hour ago, so she knew where
- 19:38to come for sippy. Look, Redmond, it's got to run that way.
- 19:41I'm sure of it. Well maybe you're right, Phil, but right
- 19:44or wrong, I'm still in a jam. So if you don't have any
- 19:47objections, I'm going back to my club now for a last try at raising
- 19:49that money again before Ceda shows. You mean you're going to face the meal
- 19:52with it without? I've got a model, you see. I own a
- 19:56fast club, all right, and I gamble a lot too, But I
- 19:59don't well tum my markers no more than I knock over flappy little guys.
- 20:03You know what I mean? Phil, I think so. But don't fold
- 20:07now, Neil, because I might still be lucky enough to catch up to
- 20:10Beth Tyler and you have money both before your time runs out and right now.
- 20:15That means fast to a phone and call Luidi, who might know which
- 20:17way a runaway twin Wood head. I'll see you, Neil. The nearest
- 20:27phone was an all night mobile gas station a block away. It's like no
- 20:32a Ledy's number, I thought, hit me. Maybe Beth wouldn't head anywhere.
- 20:37Maybe she'd just stick around. Hello, Edie, this is Marlow.
- 20:45Seen anything of Beth? No? I haven't. But why what is it?
- 20:48Marlow? Often? Where I stand? Two things? First, your
- 20:51sister has the thirty twelve dollars. It was in your purse last night.
- 20:53Oh and second, she's just about it. For a sloppy around the edge
- 20:56is murder? Now? Look, have you any idea where Beth Wood head
- 21:00if she had to get out of town to hurry? No, I don't,
- 21:02Marlow. Oh well maybe somebody up around her place does. I'll call
- 21:06you later, Marl A way, are you sold on this? I mean
- 21:11about the things you said Beth did just about Edie. But for your sake,
- 21:14let's hope I'm wrong all the way, honey, goodbye. Driving fast
- 21:23back to our bethplace on Hazeltine still left me enough time to think about it.
- 21:26Not too small a tail that I completely overlooked. Thanks to me,
- 21:30the entire Los Angeles police to pop and knew nothing about what was going on
- 21:34in and around the Saddle Club. Five minutes later, when I'd parked away
- 21:38from the dock and obviously deserted number forty one seventy nine I'd walked back and
- 21:42around to a pair of uncurtained French doors at the side. I knew that
- 21:47oversight is what is generally called a blunder, but the next second I knew
- 21:52it was nothing compared to the one I was making. Currently. If you
- 21:55so much as turn your head again, Marlow, I'll kill you, not
- 21:57like it did Sippy. Please, if i'd hate to go that way,
- 22:00Sippy was a mistake, Malo. Believe me. I was rush so you're
- 22:03shot, and ran, yes, but I didn't run too far because from
- 22:07where I stood, I could hear and see both you and Redmond and talking
- 22:11the whole thing over. When you knew that we caught ont of HERAQ,
- 22:14you decided to follow me and see where I was going before you made your
- 22:17next move, said it exactly. Now get inside, go on. The
- 22:21door is unlocked, all right, Now get over there. Hear that closet,
- 22:29and don't turn around. Why not ready to look on my face when
- 22:33you shoot? Shut up, Malow, and stop being brave, because unless
- 22:37I have to, I'm not gonna kill you. After all, You've already
- 22:41served your purpose, which I presume was getting mixed up in this mess,
- 22:44just long enough to find out about sippy for you you presume correctly. Also,
- 22:48you talk too much. I'll open that closet and get inside, all
- 22:52right, go on as you say, first, baby, one question?
- 22:57Did you do all this for the thirty grand alone? But is a tie
- 23:00in with Neil Redman in the way he feels about your sister RIDI it's a
- 23:03little bit of each Marlow. But as I said, you talk too much,
- 23:07so get in there and shut up. Getting out of beth Tailor's half
- 23:15inch thickoed closet was like arguing with an umpire. It couldn't be subtle.
- 23:21So twenty tiring minutes went by, and the heels on both my feet were
- 23:22numb before the paneling finally gave in and I was out and over to the
- 23:26telephone to put in a call to the police I should have been made a
- 23:29long time ago. But then, even as I was halfway through dialing the
- 23:33numbers, I saw something on an end table nearby that made me slowly change
- 23:37my mind. It was the two black gloves at Beth wore in the Dancing
- 23:42Hands act, And while I stared at him like they were alive in Beckoning,
- 23:47I thought hot, for it must have been a full minute, and
- 23:49then suddenly I knew that my next stop had to be the Saddle Club.
- 23:57As I parked at the Saddle Club, I saw a light drifting out of
- 24:00Neil's office, which was something I'd expected. Inside, I moved along a
- 24:04dark hall, but what I knew would be the trio of Neil Redmond and
- 24:07Nevada Texan and Eddie Tayler. Raucous voice of Paul Citar was anything but happy.
- 24:11How stupid do you think I am? Cedar? I'm telling the truth.
- 24:17Edie had the thirty crowd, but somebody got it from her when she
- 24:18was on a way to you. That's a sticking line, you know it.
- 24:21Redmond, You never had the money. This whole thing's been a frame
- 24:23to stall me, and one way or another, I'm gonna get you to
- 24:26admit that I not see there. If you don't drop that gun now,
- 24:29you're never gonna do anything ever. Come on, let it go, all
- 24:33right? I sat down and shut up and listen hard, because Redman's telling
- 24:37you the truth. Paulo, you know where the money is, that's right.
- 24:41I also know who took it. Less than an hour ago, a
- 24:44little after I called you, Edie, Beth caught up to me and confessed
- 24:47the whole she bang exactly as we figured it, Neil. I mean she
- 24:48admitted getting the money from media and using you to locate Sippy. That's right,
- 24:52but there's only one drawback to everything she admitted. None of it's true.
- 24:56What do you mean, mam. I mean Cedar that Beth Tyler didn't
- 25:00ste your money from me to hear anymore than she killed Sippy. I also
- 25:03mean that, as far as I can tell, Beth Tyler was anything more
- 25:06than that girl who played the piano and got upset when a stranger named Sippy
- 25:08started to bother and I never saw the real Beth Tyler after she ran away
- 25:11from a piano in the club tonight. That she's dead and that you we'd
- 25:15even posing his Beth all night because one you yourself stole Neil's money until you
- 25:19murdered your sister as well. Yeah, Cdie, come on, admit it
- 25:22as true. It isn't, I guess it isn't that Marlow and BET's buddy
- 25:32in our dressing room in the closet. I didn't want to kill her,
- 25:38but she found out that I had only pretended to be robbed when there was
- 25:41no one around that Sippy had seen me scream and get rid of the purse
- 25:47myself, Sippy, who was only trying to muscle in on a deal and
- 25:49went to her by mistake. Huh. Yes, that's how she knew what
- 25:55I'd done when she confronted me in the dressing room just before you came in
- 26:00and said that she wouldn't stand by and let me do a thing like that.
- 26:03To Neil, I lost my temper, Yes I didn't. And when
- 26:12Marlow showed up after her scream, I said that someone had attacked me,
- 26:18and then I pretended to be both Beth and myself from there on to get
- 26:22out of the whole thing. And I almost did. No, I'm so
- 26:32sorry. A couple of bad hours went by before the police had everybody's story
- 26:49in. Paul Cedar in the thirty thousand was gone for Nevada and Edie was
- 26:52gone for good. That left just Neil Redmond and me alone and standing near
- 26:56the main bar in the club. It was doing his best to stay all
- 27:00in one piece. It's been a tough night for you, hasn't it.
- 27:04Yeah, but a tough one for you. Neil out with Cedar and the
- 27:07money and the girls allow. Yeah, they used to came out right before
- 27:11the cowboy got too tough. Thanks to you, They tell me, Phil,
- 27:15how'd you know that Beth was dead and that Edie was both people all
- 27:18along? It was a couple of gloves, neil the ones they wore in
- 27:21their dancing hands. Act. You see. When I first met Eddie in
- 27:23the dressing room, she was wearing hers, and one of Beth's was on
- 27:26the floor. They palled me one will you Yeah? Okay, I took
- 27:30it, and later, when I met what I thought was best, I
- 27:32returned it and she put it with what we both thought was it's made.
- 27:34Yeah. Thanks. But a little while ago, when I got close to
- 27:37the gloves again, I saw that that couldn't be that they were both for
- 27:41the left hand, neil Ah. Then when Adie went to best Place to
- 27:45pass herself off as her sister, who she had already killed, she was
- 27:48smart enough to know that she should have only one glove, aroun Yeah,
- 27:51but not smart enough to think about which glover it should be. Mayor,
- 27:53I worked backwards until you got to the three of us at the club and
- 27:56tried what you knew might be the right answer. Well, you were right
- 28:00Phill all the way. Yeah, but I was still gambling if I had
- 28:04been wrong, Neil, I was giving the real Beth a long head style.
- 28:08It's always that way when you gamble, fell I know, sometimes you
- 28:12pick right, sometimes wrong, and God's dice, even with twins. And
- 28:19I thought, when I finally got to my car and started out of the
- 28:33valley and back toward Hollywood, it was better than eight o'clock in the morning.
- 28:38And here and there as I drove, I saw people who I had
- 28:42never heard of and who had never heard of me, stumbling outside after their
- 28:48morning papers. And I got to wondering what they were going to think when
- 28:52they read about a girl who had killed both a twin sister and a nightclub
- 28:57and a flabby guy in a motel who wasn't much good. Oh well,
- 29:03it was hard to say, And for myself, I was desired to think.
- 29:07Well, maybe I just didn't want to. The Adventures of Philip Marlowe

- 29:52it was simple, just a lawsuit for damages. But before it was over,
- 29:56it was far from simple, and the damages were murder because of a

- 31:14Well, we have a recurring save in this story with or in the series,
- 31:18at least over the last couple of days of people being somewhat casual about
- 31:23the death or turning out to be a crook of their fiances. And I
- 31:33guess in both cases you might be able to chalk it up a bit to
- 31:37you know, not being particularly a motivor and other people you know, particularly
- 31:41those you don't know well, and also some relief had not actually being implicated
- 31:51in the crime that could have had a severe consequence, but still a little
- 32:00I've been nice to see some writing the reactions. But other than that,
- 32:04this is the solid episode. And I've found the love clue not particularly believable,
- 32:10just because you know, it's one of those little details that you might
- 32:15tend to overlook but not fill tomorrow, clever private eye. That is all
- 32:22right. Well, on to listener comments and feedback really quickly here and I
- 32:28have this from Andrew who says, Adam, I really enjoy your podcast and
- 32:32appreciate the time and effort you put into them. I started listening when driving.
- 32:37That was the only crime mystery you did. Don't think I would have
- 32:39heard the others if it weren't for you, Andy from Richmond, Virginia.
- 32:44Well, thanks a lot, Randy, and I'm glad to explain and expand
