- 2:09All right, what's up everyone, welcome in to Inside the Hoosier
- 2:14Mind, brought to you by Military Broadcast Radio, helping give
- 2:17veterans a voice, as well as Gunfighter Beard Co.
- 2:21If you want a great beard, if you want great beard care
- 2:23products and we're in the football season, we're in the
- 2:26fall season. That means all the cool fall
- 2:28sensor out there. Definitely checking out.
- 2:30He's Marine in South Carolina makes really good products.
- 2:32He makes them for the holidays seasonally and whatnot.
- 2:35Definitely checking out. He's got a lot of great stuff.
- 2:38We finally made it. We finally made it to college
- 2:40football. Obviously we had Week 0 this
- 2:42past weekend. We had a few games, kind of like
- 2:45a little bit of the appetizer to what the actual season will be,
- 2:48at least for college football. I know the NFL starts next week,
- 2:53but in the meantime, we're actually going to have Week 1 of
- 2:56college football start this week.
- 2:58And of course admits that as the summer begins to wrap up, as we
- 3:01move in the fall. And with all of that, we of
- 3:04course have even more drama that is has to be thrown in there
- 3:08because again, why not? And it's it's something that a
- 3:13lot of people they they've taken a lot of different sides on as
- 3:17far as how they feel about it, whether or not they like it,
- 3:19whether or not they don't. And the biggest thing is being
- 3:23the whole pro players coming back into college sports as a
- 3:29whole, not just football, but football seems to be the
- 3:31leading, the leading topic of sorts.
- 3:36So we're going to talk about LSU and really all of the NCAA
- 3:40because there are other teams that are affected by this that
- 3:43are also taking part of this. LSU just unfortunately is the
- 3:46school that's being highlighted about it and potential talks of
- 3:49them maybe even getting booted from the SEC as a result of it.
- 3:53Of course, we'll go over the Week 0 scores as well as the
- 3:56Week 1 predictions for some of the big Power 4 versus Power 4
- 4:00matchups because we won't really move into the really big, big
- 4:04long segments as far as Power 4 matchups go until about Week 3
- 4:10when a lot more typical conference play starts to become
- 4:14a factor. So let's dive into the first
- 4:17part as far as on NFL players returning back to college
- 4:21football. And right now it feels like it's
- 4:23just LSU versus everyone else. And there there's a few things
- 4:29that I do want to highlight to really talk about on this to
- 4:34give you a little bit of a timeline of how quickly this is
- 4:37moving and everything that's taking place so far.
- 4:41So as of yesterday, August 31st at 8:18 AM, Pete Thamel reported
- 4:47that Lane Kiffin tells ESPN that he has been in daily
- 4:50communication with the SEC on the potential addition of
- 4:53players who are in state court lawsuits.
- 4:55He said the rule does not prohibit players from practicing
- 4:58at the school. It prohibits them from being
- 5:00added to the final 105 roster, which has to be turned in on
- 5:03Friday. LSU will wait to see the
- 5:06guidance that they get from court orders and the SEC this
- 5:09week. That will actually take place on
- 5:11Thursday, Kiffin said this morning.
- 5:14He will absolutely follow what he's told to do.
- 5:18And that has been the case. Here is where it really gets
- 5:24like completely weird and just off the wall.
- 5:27And, and this is where college football has really turned into
- 5:30a mess overall. And and this is really ignoring
- 5:35the true main, the main issue of this as far as professional
- 5:40players returning back, part of it is there is an issue with
- 5:46when the NCAA finally, you know, laid out its five for five rule
- 5:50and basically the class of 2022 felt that they were getting
- 5:53shorted that extra year. Now, again, I don't know about
- 5:56specifics. I'm like, I'm pretty sure you
- 5:58probably already got one because of COVID.
- 6:01I don't know. Overall though, if I remember
- 6:04hearing the last number correctly, it's only like 16
- 6:08football players are truly affected by this ruling.
- 6:12Now, there are a number of other athletes that are affected that
- 6:15have actually already came and join, which is particularly why
- 6:19LSU is more of in the forefront of it.
- 6:21There are two soccer players that I believe one of them did
- 6:25sign a pro contract, but I believe because they're being
- 6:29allowed to play that I believe it's on the women's team that
- 6:34she's that she's allowed to play while keeping her professional
- 6:38contract going. And they've actually already
- 6:40played a game. I believe they played against
- 6:42Arizona. And then as well as there is
- 6:45another player who she did not sign a professional contract,
- 6:49but she's still included a part of that as far as having turned
- 6:53pro technically and then returning to college sports and
- 6:56college athletics. So there's that part of it as
- 7:00far as the football part goes, which seems to be more of the
- 7:04hot button heavy hitter issue, which which is funny because
- 7:07this has been happening for the last couple of years.
- 7:09I know a lot of people mention Indiana's team last year as far
- 7:13as some of the age, some of the guys that they had on that
- 7:15roster that ended up coming back to Indiana transferring in,
- 7:20etcetera, etcetera. It as well as you had funny
- 7:26enough in the basketball world of things, you had Charles
- 7:30Padico signed an NBA contract and then came back to Alabama.
- 7:35Even though it was only for five games, he still played five
- 7:38games of college basketball after having already gone pro.
- 7:41And then he was told that he could not continue his college
- 7:44career and it was completely over.
- 7:47And one of the questions that a guy in a football group that I'm
- 7:51in actually asked, what is the difference in these situations
- 7:55where they should be allowed to play college football?
- 7:58And do you feel the same way in this situation as you did
- 8:01whether Betico or Betiako should have played or not?
- 8:08And it again, it's a it's a weird, it's a really weird
- 8:15tiptoe issue, right? Because to me, trying to play a
- 8:20little bit of devil's advocate because I'm, I'm a little bit
- 8:23more for it. And, and here's the reason why.
- 8:26And it's funny, before all this actually kicked off, I talked
- 8:29about this with a Co worker at work.
- 8:32As far as, you know, some guys declaring, some not them
- 8:34changing their minds, etcetera, etcetera, and whether or not
- 8:38they should be allowed to come back in or not.
- 8:39And, and here's my, here's my biggest argument, right?
- 8:42If if say you have a dude that does go undrafted into the NFL,
- 8:48OK, and let and let's just say for the sake of math, the season
- 8:52for everybody officially ended back in February.
- 8:55As far as the national championship goes, we want to
- 8:57get technical. Most of these teams, their
- 8:59seasons ended back in January. So let's just say for January's
- 9:03sake. So from January all the way
- 9:06through September now. So that's eight months.
- 9:11And when you when you sit and you look at that timeline, OK,
- 9:15if you end college football like say your last year in in
- 9:18January, from January until about April, all you're doing is
- 9:23just preparing for an NFL combine.
- 9:25Now, a lot of that can be maybe working out a little bit more to
- 9:28be able to do like the bench press, some of the other
- 9:31exercises and some of the other tasks they want you to do to
- 9:34measure your your jump, your abilities.
- 9:37I know for a lot of NFL players, they've mentioned the fact that
- 9:42they kind of have to become track athletes because you're
- 9:44one of your biggest things that you're going to be looked at for
- 9:46is your 4/4 time. You know, yeah, you can be
- 9:48strong. Your film is basically your big
- 9:51time resume. And then the combine is more
- 9:53kind of your impersonator. You like.
- 9:55OK, tell me more about you. Tell me what you're able to do.
- 9:57Tell me what you weren't able to do.
- 9:59You know, let us see this. Let us see that kind of thing.
- 10:01And so from January to April, everybody's on the everybody's
- 10:08on the same playing field. There's no difference from when
- 10:11they will finish their last game as a senior, junior, whatever
- 10:14they're leaving as to right there in April, no difference.
- 10:19Then you go from April to let's just say you know, beginning of
- 10:23August, you're going to have a little bit of the NFL mini
- 10:26training camps, actual camp itself, etcetera, etcetera.
- 10:32As far as you know, working out with the team, getting used to
- 10:34them. You're maybe getting introduced
- 10:36to your team dietitians, your team workouts, your personal
- 10:40trainers, your strength and conditioning coaches in the NFL,
- 10:44etcetera, etcetera. You know, moving, moving on to
- 10:46that next level of as far as taking care of your body,
- 10:50preparing it for the next level of, you know, competition and
- 10:52competitive football. And then again, you're, you're
- 10:58there, but you're, you're not kind of thing.
- 11:00You know, it, it, it's kind of like when you're, when you're
- 11:03newbie on the job, it's like, yeah, I hold this new position
- 11:06at this job and I, I'm there, I'm hired.
- 11:10But I'm not going to sit here and say like, Oh yeah, I'm a
- 11:13full-fledged member. Like I already know what I'm
- 11:14doing. You kind of do.
- 11:17But you're, you're not quite warmed up, you're not quite in
- 11:20there yet. And and so then it moves into,
- 11:24you know, the the end of August, beginning of September and, you
- 11:29know, rosters in the NFL are making their final cuts for the
- 11:32season. Some of these guys, yeah,
- 11:34they're probably not going to make it.
- 11:35They're probably not to potentially be either practice
- 11:38squad guys. They might be able to hit on a
- 11:4153 man roster or if somebody gets injured, they might get
- 11:43picked up in camp. You know, there's a there's a
- 11:45whole multitude of things that can happen that can get these
- 11:48guys potentially into, you know, another football uniform for a
- 11:52team, professional professional or not.
- 11:55And so when people talk about like, oh, they're pros and then
- 11:59they're come back, here's what I'll say.
- 12:02Look at a guy when he first comes in the league like that
- 12:05rookie year, you know, they can, if they get like a full portrait
- 12:08shot of what he looks like, you know, holding his helmet in his
- 12:12uniform, etcetera, etcetera. He's going to look like he did
- 12:15just a few months ago. Like he might be a little bit
- 12:17bulkier if he's able to put that kind of muscle and weight on,
- 12:20sure. But for the most part, he's
- 12:22probably not going to look that much different now after his
- 12:25first full year in the league. That next year you're going to
- 12:28see a significant difference as far as how they're built, how
- 12:31they've taken care of themselves, how they've moved
- 12:33on. And and they've done this for
- 12:35years in the NFL. If you go back and look at guys
- 12:38from their first year in to their second year and even
- 12:41beyond, they just become total monsters as far as their size.
- 12:45So to the this idea of, you know, because they are
- 12:50technically pros and they've worked out with pros, which most
- 12:53of these college athletes already do.
- 12:56Like if they're any type of good, if they have any type of
- 12:59branding to their name, like they're going to be around some
- 13:01of these key celebrities like look at Malachi, Tony and the
- 13:04Hurricanes with Michael Irving. Now, I don't know how much he's
- 13:08teaching him. I'm sure he's probably giving
- 13:10him some type of guidance, some type of tips.
- 13:13But none the less, though, they're already working with
- 13:17pros, they're already hearing out what pros have and what
- 13:20they're teaching them. To me, there is not that big of
- 13:24a difference between a guy who finishes his college career in
- 13:29the very beginning of his rookie season, even if that, if he
- 13:33makes it to the roster, there's hardly any difference.
- 13:36Maybe he's learned a couple of tricks, but you can, again, you
- 13:39can learn that from a coach coming in.
- 13:41You know, heck, look at Ohio State when they brought Matt
- 13:43Patricia in, You know, now they brought Arthur Smith in for the
- 13:45offensive coordinator position. You, you can learn tricks of the
- 13:49trade from everywhere. And they're professionals.
- 13:52They know the professional system.
- 13:53They know how professionals work and they brought it in.
- 13:57That's no slide against Ohio State that I don't want this to
- 13:59seem like, you know, oh, well they have, you know, NFL head
- 14:02coaches and whatnot that are now on their team.
- 14:05No, no, no. To me there's no difference
- 14:07between when you finish your senior year and when you start
- 14:10pre season. There's no difference in the
- 14:13type of person. Now, if they were already in the
- 14:14league for a year, if they were already on an NFL roster, and I
- 14:17don't care if they're third, if they're third string, if they're
- 14:21fourth string, I don't even care if they're on the practice
- 14:24squad, if they're in the NFL for at least a year and then they
- 14:28come back to college football, that's a no.
- 14:30That's a no to me. But but again, that that's just
- 14:34my personal thoughts on it. And again, LSU isn't the only
- 14:40team that's truly doing this either.
- 14:44There actually is a offensive lineman for the Texans,
- 14:48Offensive lineman Cole Hudson, who returned to the Texans for
- 14:51the 2020 sixth season after participating in NFL mini camps.
- 14:56Hudson spent time with the Cowboys and the Browns earlier
- 14:58in the offseason and regained a fifth year of eligibility
- 15:01following the court ruling regarding college athletic,
- 15:04college athlete eligibility. Some of the other names that,
- 15:07again, probably not as mentioned as much.
- 15:11Daquan Wright, obviously Xavian Harris, both former Ole Miss
- 15:14players who Daquan writes a tight end, the saving Harris's
- 15:19defensive lineman. For the most part, actually,
- 15:23they would be from what I, from what I told, from what I've been
- 15:27told and kind of looking at it, they would just be more of deaf
- 15:29players. So it's not like they would
- 15:31probably get a ton of playing time unless somebody's hurt or
- 15:34if they just need to sub somebody out.
- 15:36So it's not like they're going to be starters either.
- 15:38Now, again, whatever your stance is, whether you like it or hate
- 15:41it, again, I I'm not trying to try to convince you that it
- 15:44should happen, but I'm also trying to just give the facts.
- 15:48Wydette Williams, former Ole Miss safety who joined the
- 15:51Cardinals. Jack Pyburn, obviously, I think
- 15:54a lot of people might have heard about that, but he just got
- 15:56claimed by the Chiefs earlier, so he will not be returning to
- 15:59college football. Junior TOI Halamaka, the Notre
- 16:07Dame defensive lineman who is transferring to LSU, DQ Smith
- 16:11from South Carolina, Trent Hendrick, who's James Madison
- 16:14linebacker Anthony Hankerson, former Oregon State running back
- 16:17who joined the Seahawks. So there's so there's a ton of
- 16:21players that are are doing this that are coming back to college
- 16:25football. But since LSU is the most active
- 16:28in bringing former pro players back, LSU seems to be getting
- 16:32the the the forefront of this, even to the point where there's
- 16:38talks of expelling them from the SEC, which really kind of makes
- 16:44me laugh more than anything, mainly because LSU is one of
- 16:49their flagship universities. Like the the amount of money
- 16:53that LSU is worth, I, I don't think the SEC would do it now.
- 16:57They can threaten it. They can be, you know, pissed
- 16:59off, whatever the case may be. To me, this is very similar to
- 17:03the Texas Tech with Brandon Sorsby, which I never had an
- 17:07issue with Texas Tech going to bat for it.
- 17:09It was one of those when I looked at it, I'm like, well,
- 17:12Texas Tech isn't doing anything different than what any other
- 17:15major school would do for a star player that they invested a ton
- 17:19of money into. They're going to go to bat for
- 17:21him as much as they can. And if it ends up losing in
- 17:23court, well, it ends up losing in court.
- 17:26And I feel like LSU is in that same boat.
- 17:28And of course, everybody wants to make LSU the bad guy.
- 17:31Everybody wants to make Texas Tech the bad guy.
- 17:33But to give you an idea of where LSU stands as far as they're
- 17:36worth. So according to Yahoo Sports, as
- 17:38far as the most valuable college football programs slash
- 17:43universities just as a whole, Texas is number one at 2.38
- 17:48billion, Georgia at number two, 1.92 billion, Ohio State at 1.9
- 17:52billion, Notre Dame 1.85, Michigan 1.83, Alabama 1.74,
- 17:59Oklahoma 1.49, USC 1.4, Tennessee 1.37, LSU 1.23
- 18:06billion. So to give you an idea, that's
- 18:09the top 10 universities as far as their worth as far as their
- 18:13their athletic revenue or not athletic revenue, their athletic
- 18:17worth. They're #10 if you just want to
- 18:21do it by the SEC 12345, there's six, there's 6 out of 16.
- 18:28So the upper part of your echelon as far as your
- 18:31conference goes, I don't. Again, the SEC can be mad.
- 18:35They can try to punish them. There's already been a court
- 18:37ruling that and basically the SEC is not allowed to do that.
- 18:42But again, I think they'll probably end up pushing that to
- 18:45go as far as federal court and whatnot.
- 18:48And again, it's just interesting because this is again, it's such
- 18:50a small handful of players that are doing this.
- 18:53And then it's not like they're all coming to LSU.
- 18:55They're across hundreds of sports across college athletics.
- 18:59But because LSU is the most, you know, prolific with it, they're
- 19:03going to town on them. There was a little bit of news
- 19:06broke actually from Pete family. It says News Tennessee
- 19:11Chancellor Donde Plowman, president of the SE CS executive
- 19:15committee, tells ESPN the league will enforce its rules regarding
- 19:18NFL players trying to return to college.
- 19:20We are prepared to defend our rule and our authority to defend
- 19:23our rules. She added that the league's
- 19:27presidents have empowered Greg Sankey to use his authority on
- 19:30the rule. This is a rule we will not
- 19:33budget on. On LSU, they were in the room
- 19:36when the vote was taken on the penalties.
- 19:38So they know and then so it's it, it, it is crazy how much
- 19:46this is truly, truly continued on and truly, you know, become
- 19:52a, I'm not going to say a thing that isn't worth noting, but it,
- 19:58it, it's just crazy at how much really just how much people have
- 20:06dug into this and made it just seem like this isn't.
- 20:09Like the end of the world thing, like it to me, it's, it's, it's
- 20:13just crazy. But nonetheless, though, let's
- 20:16let's move on into the, the recap of week zero and a couple
- 20:23of the big power four games that we had going on there.
- 20:27The first one, of course, we had UNC versus TCU over in Dublin,
- 20:31Ireland, took place 12:00 PM Eastern that day.
- 20:34UNC ended up winning 15 and nothing.
- 20:38That was a really bad game overall.
- 20:41I'm just going to be completely transparent with you.
- 20:42That game was bad. That was not a like it.
- 20:48Like, yeah, it's a big win for Bill Belichick.
- 20:50It's probably going to be one of his best wins he gets all season
- 20:54because UNC schedule, it is not favorable whatsoever.
- 21:00Like they like, they don't have the hardest schedule in college
- 21:02for the ball, but it's not a good schedule.
- 21:03Like, they have to go to Clemson, they host Notre Dame,
- 21:06they have to go to Pitt, they have to go to Duke, they have to
- 21:08host Miami, and then they have to host Louisville and then they
- 21:11have to go to Virginia. So I mean, they they do not have
- 21:15an easy, easy schedule at all. I mean, they have, what is this,
- 21:20eastern Tennessee? Yeah, Eastern Tennessee State
- 21:23this coming week. That's probably going to be a
- 21:25win for them. I don't see them potentially
- 21:29getting another win until they travel to UConn in the beginning
- 21:33of November like that. Like that's how bad I kind of
- 21:38expect U&C to be. And I I just, I don't see a lot
- 21:42of a lot of props from them as far as that goes.
- 21:46But just looking at the stats, looking at the game overall,
- 21:48Billy Edwards junior looked actually really good for them.
- 21:52You know, he was 16 to 28232 yards, didn't throw any
- 21:56touchdowns, I don't believe, but also didn't didn't throw any
- 21:59picks, which was nice. And really their biggest bright
- 22:04spot to me was Jelani Thurman, junior tight in for North
- 22:07Carolina. He did absolutely fantastic for
- 22:10him. You know, he was he was with
- 22:13Ohio State for the last four years.
- 22:16Didn't really do a whole lot of big impact.
- 22:19Really had about what was that 13 receptions for just for easy
- 22:27math, No, maybe 140 yards, about two touchdowns.
- 22:30So nothing crazy. But I mean, he comes in this
- 22:33one, he's got 4 receptions, 94 yards already to start, you
- 22:38know, to start off and he's only a junior.
- 22:39So I mean, he he could potentially stay one more year
- 22:43if he really wants to and be a solid tied in for him.
- 22:46But I think, I think if he can continue to be the bright spot
- 22:49for him, that'll that'll help quite a bit.
- 22:52But I will say, I mean, TCU was still able to run all over them.
- 22:55They had 142 rushing yards just from their one back on 25
- 22:59carries. TCU just really hurt themselves
- 23:02as a whole, though. I mean, 11 penalties for 89
- 23:05yards. They held the ball more and they
- 23:08only had one turnover. It it was just, it was not a
- 23:12good game like the first. The first quarter was really
- 23:15good, but man, after that it just, it just completely went
- 23:20downhill and it went downhill fast.
- 23:22Again. I don't expect a lot from UNC
- 23:24this year. Good for them for being able to
- 23:26get the win again. I, I just, I don't expect a lot.
- 23:30I just don't. The other big game that again, a
- 23:33little bit of a disappointment 'cause I expected this one, I
- 23:37expected this one to be a little bit better.
- 23:39As far as you know, the competition overall was NC State
- 23:42at Virginia. This one was just bad.
- 23:44It was a 34 to 8 win by Virginia Beau, per Beulah, by the way,
- 23:49which I don't know why people were so down on him.
- 23:52I don't know if it was because he, you know, he started off
- 23:54pretty decent for Mizzou and then really fell apart.
- 23:58I think injuries had a pretty good part in that too.
- 24:01But he came in, he's 9 of 11155 yards, 2 touchdowns as well as
- 24:05110 rushing yards to boot. So I mean he had 265 yards just
- 24:11on his own, you know, for for their offense and their and
- 24:15their defense showed up well. I mean CJ Bailey, you know, only
- 24:18three for 84 yards, 12 out of 23 a pick.
- 24:21He was their best rusher with 33.
- 24:24It was 413 yards to 168 penalties did hurt them a little
- 24:29bit. They had five penalties for 51
- 24:30yards. They were perfect.
- 24:32They were 4 for four on 4th down and they held the ball for 17
- 24:36minutes longer. So I mean, there, there's a lot
- 24:38of potential for Virginia. And I think for Virginia, when
- 24:42you look at this ACC schedule, I mean, they're they're pretty
- 24:46solid. I mean, they might have kind of
- 24:48a cakewalk schedule as far as maybe maybe making the ACC
- 24:56championship appearance. Barring, I would say, barring I
- 25:01would say anything happening to Miami, Louisville or SMU, I
- 25:05think Virginia's in a pretty good driver's seat to be able to
- 25:08make a pretty decent run. You know, they face they face
- 25:11Norfolk State on not this Friday, but the following Friday
- 25:16on 11th. I'm sorry.
- 25:22Hold on. Let me let me make sure I can do
- 25:25my do my math. Yeah, that's on the 11th.
- 25:27OK. So they face Norfolk State, then
- 25:30they face West Virginia. Might be a little bit tough just
- 25:32because I mean it is a powerful opponent, but we'll see Delaware
- 25:36then they go to Florida State, they host Syracuse.
- 25:39Now they do have to go to SMU, but it's early at well it's
- 25:42middle of October. It's not the end of the world.
- 25:44Then Duke, then Wake Forest. They host Cal, they host North
- 25:47Carolina then they ended at Virginia Tech.
- 25:51I mean there's a there's a high chance they can only come out of
- 25:54this with like one loss, maybe undefeated now, and that might
- 25:57be a little bit of a stretch. But looking at their schedule,
- 26:01looking at what they did against NC State, I mean that it as long
- 26:05as everybody stays healthy. I mean it it's very possible
- 26:07they might be one of these dark horse teams that has just, you
- 26:11know, they go on a run and then they just don't let it go.
- 26:14I think they got a little bit of a break as far as their schedule
- 26:16and whatnot goes. So I mean good for good for
- 26:19them. They'll be kind of one of those
- 26:21teams. Watch.
- 26:21I mean, if I if I had to be a betting favorite right now just
- 26:25because of their schedule, I mean I would put them in there
- 26:30like you got to think about it. You you look at you know,
- 26:33Louisville and SMU both like their worst, like their entire
- 26:38worst schedule face off is basically against each other.
- 26:42Miami has a really easy schedule coming up this coming up this
- 26:46season. So I mean it with aside from
- 26:49Notre Dame. So I mean there there's a lot in
- 26:52play. I mean, I, and now that I sit
- 26:54here and think about it, I know everybody has Miami all but
- 26:57penciled in for the ACC Championship.
- 27:00And man, if I feel like most of the pressure right now is on SMU
- 27:03and Louisville. And we'll find out between the
- 27:05two who will basically have the tiebreaker over the other one.
- 27:08I mean, I think if SMU stumbles even once, just because they
- 27:12have a little bit more of a difficult schedule, they may not
- 27:15be in the ACC Championship. And it it might be Virginia, it
- 27:18might be Louisville. We'll, we'll, we will find out.
- 27:20We will see. But that was week zero.
- 27:23I ended up going one-on-one of my picks, unfortunately, just
- 27:27'cause I did not pick, I did not pick.
- 27:28UNC doing pulling off the upset, that one, that one I did not
- 27:32expect to happen by any stretch of the imagination.
- 27:36It was funny when I was watching it, I was like, Are you sure?
- 27:38Are you sure that's that's what we're going with that you guys
- 27:42are going to pull it off. And yeah, sure enough, they did.
- 27:44They they managed to pull out the win.
- 27:47But let's move forward to Week 1 though.
- 27:50So the soonest other Power 4 game that we're going to have
- 27:53happen, we've got Colorado at Georgia Tech September 3rd at
- 27:578:00 PM Eastern on ESPN. I don't, I don't really know
- 28:02what to expect from Colorado this year.
- 28:04I truly think this will probably be Dion's last last season as
- 28:11the head coach of the Colorado Buffaloes.
- 28:14That'd be fully transparent. I don't know where you go from
- 28:16there. I don't know who you get.
- 28:19I don't know if there is really a a combination of I don't know
- 28:24if there's a good enough coach slash coordinator that maybe
- 28:27wants to move up. If they're say like in the Group
- 28:30of 6 and they want to move up to a Power 4 program.
- 28:35I don't know if there's really one that they see this Colorado
- 28:38job and they're like, OK, there's there's a lot to work
- 28:41with. Like there is.
- 28:44I think you have to do you do have to give Dion the nod of the
- 28:46respect of. I think if you can get some of
- 28:49these guys to Colorado, see how pretty the state is, see how
- 28:52pretty the mountains are and and and it really is personally,
- 28:56having gone to Colorado, it's absolutely gorgeous.
- 28:59I think if you can maybe sell that on top of a little bit of
- 29:02the UNIO money might be a different story.
- 29:06But I mean, even when Dion's done it, I mean, he's he's
- 29:09utilized the transfer portal. I don't know how effectively you
- 29:13can consider him having used it because I mean, the the winds
- 29:19have really not been produced, not since Shadur and Travis
- 29:21Hunter both left. So I mean, against Georgia Tech
- 29:25now, I know Georgia Tech themselves are also going to be
- 29:27a bit of a rebuild with Haynes King having gone to the NFL,
- 29:30which he was a huge contributor to them and for them last year.
- 29:36And as it stands right now, the spread the ESPN predictor as of
- 29:40right now on September 1st at 6:30 Eastern PM Eastern Time,
- 29:46they have Georgia Tech favored by 6 1/2 and matchup predictor
- 29:49gives Georgia Tech about a 5858 1/2 percent chance of winning.
- 29:55Now they did pick up Alberto Mendoza, Fernando Mendoza's
- 29:59little brother who's actually on the Hoosiers last year for that
- 30:04national championship team. So I mean, they they have a dude
- 30:08that does technically have experience when it comes to
- 30:12playing college football. Now, I I'm not going to sit here
- 30:15and act like, you know, oh, he was on a championship team.
- 30:18His brother's Fernando. Like he, he already knows what
- 30:21he's doing. No, no, no, he still got a lot
- 30:23of growing up to do. He basically came in for a lot
- 30:25of clean up duty last year for Fernando.
- 30:28They're at IU whenever they would be ahead in games.
- 30:32But overall, I mean, compared to Colorado, again, no offense to
- 30:35Dion, I like Dion, but there it is just been a very
- 30:40underwhelming experiment post his sons and Travis Hunter being
- 30:46there like it you, you didn't see a lot his first year.
- 30:49I mean there was growth, there was progress.
- 30:51Second year they really seem to take another step forward.
- 30:54Last year they took a big step back with him losing them.
- 30:59And I know some Colorado fans even mentioned it.
- 31:01This year might be more kind of that OK you got a pass last year
- 31:06because of your son's leaving now let's see how now let's see
- 31:10how this isn't going. Tim B Hendricks bring combat
- 31:16veteran here. I'm also part of the Bowden
- 31:17clan. Love your content.
- 31:19I appreciate that Tim. IA 100% appreciate that good
- 31:22Sir. So yeah we'll we'll see.
- 31:26I think if I remember right on my predictions.
- 31:27I have Georgia Tech winning this one.
- 31:30I haven't completely filled out all my predictions yet because I
- 31:32was so wait and see if anything potentially came out a little
- 31:35bit more before I can fill in predictions out.
- 31:38But but at the moment I do have, I think I have Georgia Tech
- 31:45winning, winning that one. So let's move on to the next big
- 31:49one. We've got Baylor and Auburn now
- 31:53this one I think will be overall pretty good.
- 31:57It's kind of an interesting thing to see.
- 31:59I know Dave Aranda is a bit on the a bit on the hot seat as far
- 32:05as whether or not he's going to end up keeping his job, whether
- 32:08he's not going to end up keeping his job or not.
- 32:11And I think this is going to be a good, good determination
- 32:15moment of whether or not he will.
- 32:16The other big part is Alex Golish.
- 32:19How does he do the first really big test for Auburn against
- 32:24Baylor? Now this will be on the
- 32:27September 5th at 3:30. Accidentally skipped the Miami
- 32:30and Stanford. I'll go back to that here in a
- 32:32second. So you've got Baylor versus
- 32:35Auburn. Alex Goldwich brings a lot of
- 32:37his guys from USF with him. They host a Baylor team who, you
- 32:42know, what does DJ Lackway look like now?
- 32:44Post Billy Napier, post Florida, now in a new environment, a new
- 32:47system. It seemed like DJ last year,
- 32:50especially after the LSU game, it, it was just hot and cold for
- 32:54him the entire time. And it and it's a shame because
- 32:56he's a really talented quarterback.
- 32:57He was highly touted coming out of high school.
- 33:00Obviously the the little bit of sample that we got from him his
- 33:04freshman year, he was dynamically electric.
- 33:06He calls Florida to get some upset wins, but now he's at
- 33:10Baylor, you know, new system, new area going into his junior
- 33:14year. So what what does he look like
- 33:17with said new team and going up against the SEC again?
- 33:20So I think this will be a good one.
- 33:23This is what I do have. Auburn winning it just because I
- 33:27do. I do believe in ghoulish or
- 33:29ghoulish. How are you pronouncing his
- 33:31name? You know, bringing a lot of his
- 33:34guys over. So he keeps a lot of that
- 33:35continuity. He keeps a lot of he keeps a lot
- 33:39of experience too. So I mean, I, I'm going to give
- 33:42the edge to them. According DraftKings, they have
- 33:46Auburn a 7 1/2 point favorite on the spread and then the match of
- 33:50predictor 73% Auburn winning. So pretty, pretty decent, you
- 33:55know, favorability in Auburn in Auburn wise.
- 33:59The other big game aside from Colorado and Georgia Tech,
- 34:02that'll take place on the 3rd. So that'll be Thursday, Friday
- 34:07night, we have some Friday night ball, little bit of a late night
- 34:10game we've got #7 Miami going to Stanford, who if, if you didn't
- 34:17watch it, believe it or not, Stanford versus Hawaii, great
- 34:21game came all the way down to the very end.
- 34:24Stanford actually had a 27 to 7 lead.
- 34:27Hawaii ended up coming all the way back.
- 34:29They took the lead and actually forced Stanford to have to go
- 34:33down, get a last minute touchdown to ultimately save it.
- 34:37And it ended up being a lot better than what I thought it
- 34:40was going to this game. It it's pretty much hands down
- 34:44Miami. Barring any type of weird,
- 34:46terrible injury, I expect Miami to be able to run away with this
- 34:50with Darian, Mensa, Malachi, Tony.
- 34:52I know they lost a lot of guys on that offensive line
- 34:55supposedly because of who Mario Cristobal is, because he likes
- 34:58to build up the line because it because that's his that's his
- 35:02bread and butter. That's his baby as well as some
- 35:04of the defensive line guys that they have that are going to be
- 35:06replacing the team, Mezador, Ruben Bay.
- 35:10I think Miami's going to be fine.
- 35:11I definitely think they're going to be better than Stanford,
- 35:15especially with, and I'll give Davis Warren credit.
- 35:18I mean the dude who I believe he played for Michigan, he played
- 35:21for Indiana. You think even he went 22 with
- 35:2534310 yards, one touchdown, other running back forward
- 35:29carried it 25 times, got 99 rushing yards and three tutties.
- 35:34So, I mean, I think Stanford will be better than what they
- 35:39have been. They still have a long way to
- 35:41go, but I'm not going to necessarily count Stanford out.
- 35:45Timothy, about time Auburn had an easy take against Baylor.
- 35:48I don't know about easy. I do think they'll get the win
- 35:52though. Like truly, I think I think
- 35:54Auburn will be able to pull out the win.
- 35:55I don't know if it'll be easy though.
- 35:56I do got to give, got to give Dave Aranda a little bit of
- 35:59credit there at Baylor. I don't, I don't know if it'll
- 36:01be a cakewalk, but we'll we'll definitely be able to see and
- 36:04find out. Then of course we have on
- 36:08September 5th, we have Boston College at Cincinnati at 3:30 PM
- 36:11on Fox. This one, I'll be honest, I
- 36:15don't know hardly anything about this game other than Brendan
- 36:20Sorsby's not going to be there anymore.
- 36:22So since he's going to have an entirely new starting
- 36:24quarterback, Boston College was an absolute mess last year.
- 36:28So I'm like, I don't know how much I dress this.
- 36:32So that one, that one will be interesting just to see, you
- 36:37know what, what versions of these teams are we getting?
- 36:40I mean, really, you know, who are we getting?
- 36:44But I do think they'll be, they'll be solid overall,
- 36:48looking at the predictor and looking at the draftking spread.
- 36:51They have Cincinnati a 7 1/2 point favorite and they've got
- 36:54them favored by 77% to be able to get the win.
- 36:57I I can see that it's at home for Cincinnati.
- 37:00Not saying that the Cincinnati crowd is crazy, but again, I
- 37:04just, I don't know how much faith I have in Boston College
- 37:08to, you know, you know, pull out something crazy or, you know, do
- 37:11it to have a dominating performance.
- 37:14So if I remember right, I took Cincinnati in this as well.
- 37:17And then of course, the big match up that everybody I think
- 37:20is waiting for, whether you're an LSU fan like myself, whether
- 37:24you're not an LSU fan either one it it's one that I think
- 37:30everybody is waiting to see, you know, what happens, what is the
- 37:35what is going to be the final results of this game?
- 37:39And that is Clemson coming to the real Death Valley of Baton
- 37:44Rouge in Louisiana September 5th, 7:30 PM at on ABC.
- 37:51Now, this is what kind of surprises me overall, and I
- 37:54think a little bit of it is because probably like myself,
- 37:59there's a lot of questions on Clemson's roster.
- 38:03Now, there's a lot of questions on LS US roster too.
- 38:07Timothy, yes, the Tiger Bowl, exactly.
- 38:09You kind of love the Tiger Bowl. I mean, whether it's LSU versus
- 38:11Auburn, Auburn versus Mizzou, Mizzou versus LSU, whoever,
- 38:15there's tigers, Tigers everywhere.
- 38:18And of course we get Tigers versus Tigers Part 2.
- 38:21You know, maybe revenge from last year.
- 38:24LSU went in South Carolina and their Death Valley got the win.
- 38:28You know, as clubs are going to try to pull off the upset here.
- 38:32But this one is interesting because you the the the ESPN
- 38:38predictor gives LSU a 75% chance of winning and DraftKings has
- 38:43them favored by 10 to win, which to me crazy, by the way, crazy
- 38:50that they're giving them this much of A much of a favoritism.
- 38:55The other part of this too, is of course, the the stories that
- 38:58go along with it of, you know, how, how is Lane Kiffin going to
- 39:02look in his debut for LSU? You know, same for Charlie Wise
- 39:06junior, the offensive coordinator that he brought with
- 39:08him from Ole Miss. And I think truly, whether
- 39:13Clemson is good this year or not, this is going to be truly a
- 39:16test for him and for LSU as to how the season is going to look.
- 39:21And that's what it was last year.
- 39:22It was a a great, you know, predicator to how the season
- 39:26ultimately finished for Clemson and for LSU both.
- 39:29It was a 17 to 10 game. LSU ended up pulling out the
- 39:33win. Clemson their their defense was
- 39:37solid, but their offense was absolutely garbage.
- 39:39And it and it and it was weird because of how much experience
- 39:42Dabo had brought back. I'm a Louisiana kid, but bowed
- 39:46in blood. That's fair.
- 39:48That's definitely fair, but it was just it was interesting to
- 39:54see how how this ultimately ended up because Clemson ended
- 40:00up being a total let down and then LS us offense was just so
- 40:03anemic. Like like as an LSU fan, I was
- 40:05sitting there watching, I was like, can you all please score
- 40:08like, OK, cool. The defense got us a touchdown.
- 40:10Can our offense compliment that? Can we, can we, can they just
- 40:12get a little bit of something to match what was truly a
- 40:15championship level defense that eventually they just kept
- 40:19getting burned because. You can only carry an offense
- 40:21for so long before it ultimately ends up being really difficult
- 40:25to do. The other thing that really
- 40:28makes me question this too, is I believe Dabo did finally name
- 40:33the quarterback. It's going to be Christopher
- 40:35Vizzina. Vizzina, he's a senior.
- 40:39He's 6 foot four. I think he's been there pretty
- 40:41much the entire time behind Klay Klubnick.
- 40:45I think filled in for him a little bit last year just due to
- 40:48I think some injuries and just to give me some experience for
- 40:51potentially coming into the season.
- 40:53What really makes me wonder though, and I and this this is
- 40:56probably a little bit of a reach because you could argue every
- 40:59single coach does this, especially in football.
- 41:04You know, reporters were asking, hey, you know, who's your, you
- 41:07know, who's your starting quarterback?
- 41:09Like who's it going to be between him and one other guy?
- 41:11I think it was who was the guy? I think that I think it's
- 41:17between him and Tate Reynolds was the other one and he's a
- 41:20freshman out of Arizona, 6 foot 2215.
- 41:24So a little bit heavier, but a couple inches shorter.
- 41:28I believe he was the other contender for the starting spot
- 41:32there in Clemson. And you know, dad was like, I
- 41:36don't I don't know, I don't know who the starting quarterback is
- 41:38going to be. And I mean that that's fair.
- 41:39There's probably still a lot that he wanted to see, kind of
- 41:41wanted to learn. And I mean, we, we, we
- 41:43experienced that with Harbaugh, with JJ McCarthy and Shay
- 41:47Patterson. I mean, we've experienced it
- 41:50with a ton of different quarterbacks and a ton of
- 41:52different guys throughout college football.
- 41:54So it, it's not one, I'm surprised that he was like, I
- 41:57don't know. But but it does also lead me to
- 41:59question, is it one of those scenarios and situations where
- 42:02he, he's doing it to make sure that, you know, he's, he's not
- 42:08putting anything out there. He's not committing to a guy too
- 42:11early. Or, you know, we'll find out
- 42:13when you find out. Or is it one of those situations
- 42:17where, you know, maybe maybe they're at the same level,
- 42:21whether that level's good, whether that level's bad, we
- 42:24don't know. But are they at that same level?
- 42:27And is neither one of them taking or able to go that next
- 42:32step to distance themselves from the other?
- 42:35Again, it could be really good. You know, they could both be
- 42:37playing really sharp and maybe they're rolling with it.
- 42:41Maybe they're not, we don't know.
- 42:44But but it it does lead to kind of an interesting question with
- 42:48that with that, Dabo ended up, of course, also adding to this
- 42:53whole NFL players, players returning back to college
- 42:58football thing. So according to David Hale from
- 43:02ESPN, Dabo did an interview and he said as he's preparing for
- 43:08his Week 1 match up against LSU team that features more than 40
- 43:11transfers, LSU should wear rally, should rally to wear
- 43:16flags. Give them absolutely, he said.
- 43:21One thing he isn't. Oh yeah, LSU features more than
- 43:2640 transfers in the new offensive coaching staff.
- 43:28That has been a challenge that is required in the watch tape
- 43:32from dozens different schools, from all the players they
- 43:34brought in, all the coaches that they brought in.
- 43:37One thing he isn't watching, however, is NFL pre season games
- 43:40instead. NFL Instead, Sweeney said no pun
- 43:43intended, he insisted he and his Tigers are staying in our lane.
- 43:48When it comes to LSU coach Lane Kiffin's decision to push for
- 43:51two NFL for two players who are in NFL mini camps to play for
- 43:55his team, perhaps against Clemson should a judge allow it.
- 43:58Again, this this case is going to be done Thursday morning and
- 44:03if I remember correctly, it's the NCAA is listed as a
- 44:07defendant as well as the SEC. Now initially I heard the SEC
- 44:10wasn't going to be there. I don't know if that has changed
- 44:12or not. More than likely, I think they
- 44:14should be there, but we should hopefully have have a decision
- 44:20and a resolution for sure by Friday.
- 44:22We'll find out whether or not they're going to play and then
- 44:25what, you know, what actions or potential punishments or
- 44:28penalties come post this. Now, again, there is supposedly
- 44:31A ruling that the SEC is not allowed to do that.
- 44:34But again, they can also challenge that and go even
- 44:36further with that. Of course, already said is
- 44:41Daquan Wright defensive end Junior Tui Halamaka.
- 44:45I've been practicing with LSU with a run up to the opener,
- 44:48despite both having spent time in NFL camps, right?
- 44:50Actually played in preseason games with Cleveland, which
- 44:53Sweetie noted with a joke Tuesday.
- 44:55I got to watch Brown practice. Brown's practice in early June.
- 44:59I'm probably going to get I'm probably going to get turned in
- 45:01for tampering, which is a little bit shot at Lane as well as Pete
- 45:04Golding there at Ole Miss because he snagged A linebacker
- 45:08from Clemson. One of the few times Dabo goes
- 45:10in the portal and he loses this guy.
- 45:14Sweeney has long been critical, has been critical of the
- 45:18professionalization of college football, is skewing the
- 45:21transfer portal for several years and continuing to put a
- 45:23focus on retaining his own players.
- 45:25Developing high school recruits. The latest drama around the
- 45:28potential of returning players from the 2022 recruiting class
- 45:32who left for the NFL before the NCAA adjusted their eligibility
- 45:35rules to allow for full 5 full years on the field action,
- 45:40something Sweeney said he had never dreamed that would happen.
- 45:44I said it's kind of embarrassing.
- 45:46Sweeney said. It's honestly, it's embarrassing
- 45:48that that's where we are. I don't blame the kids, but
- 45:52people trying to take advantage of the system.
- 45:54It's embarrassing. But we've been, we've been there
- 45:56for a while. So I do, I do get where Dabo's
- 46:01coming from. And Tim, you're, you're right.
- 46:04It, it's a situation that we, we've, we've never heard of and
- 46:07it's something that's completely new.
- 46:10Like I said, there's only a small handful of even football
- 46:13players that are coming back into this.
- 46:15I think there's, again, I think the number that I heard, if I
- 46:18heard correctly, is like 16. So I mean, it's a super small
- 46:22number. Now, obviously there's more
- 46:24across other college athletics, but obviously football being
- 46:27the, the quote UN quote, king of sports because it earns the most
- 46:30revenue, it gets to be the, the face of all of it.
- 46:34It it's something that after the season, I don't think we'll ever
- 46:37hear of it again, barring anything continuing to be crazy
- 46:41as far as college football goes. The NCAA already signed into the
- 46:44the effect as far as the five for five.
- 46:47Basically you come in, I think the oldest you can come in now
- 46:51is I think 19. And so that should make most
- 46:55everybody by the time they leave 2324 is like the oldest that
- 47:01you're going to have people playing college football.
- 47:02It's not like some schools in some situations where between,
- 47:07you know, the red shirt, which they got rid of between the
- 47:11medical exemptions and whatnot, as far as you know, waivers.
- 47:16I, I don't think we're going to see any more situations where we
- 47:18have guys playing for, you know, 789 years now.
- 47:21That could be something that gets challenged later on.
- 47:25As far as you know, Hey, if, if I just had a stroke, bad luck
- 47:29for two years and I got hurt really bad.
- 47:31Like, I still want to be able to have a chance to play like
- 47:33everybody else did. And who knows, maybe the courts
- 47:36entertain it. Maybe this is something that we
- 47:37end up having to deal with again in the future.
- 47:41But at least at least now as it stands, I don't, I don't really
- 47:46see it being much of being much of anything post this season.
- 47:50Now, again, that will also be dependent as far as you know
- 47:54what, what consequences, if if any, end up coming as as a
- 48:01result of it. But nonetheless, though, looking
- 48:06at Clemson's schedule too, this this is going to be kind of a a
- 48:08predication of their their schedule, but they should have,
- 48:12I would think a fairly decent year.
- 48:16Again, it they're they're in, they have the luck of being in
- 48:19the ACC. It's not like a crazy schedule.
- 48:21The worst, the worst team they truly have to face.
- 48:26If you want to look at it, just, you know, as far as rent teams
- 48:29go after LSU, the only team they face and they host them is Miami
- 48:35in the beginning of October. But then they host Georgia
- 48:38Southern, they host UNC, they're probably going to win against
- 48:41USC. They have to travel to Cal.
- 48:43It's a super late game, then Miami, then Charleston Southern.
- 48:48Then they host Virginia Tech. They go to Florida State to
- 48:51Syracuse host Georgia Tech. Then they go to Duke and then
- 48:55they host S South Carolina. So I mean, I could easily see
- 48:59them finishing ten and two nine and three.
- 49:02Now again, I don't know if that's going to be good enough
- 49:04to get them into somewhere like the ACC championship.
- 49:07I think that's going to be too loaded.
- 49:10But I mean, it it it's possible. And if we know anything from the
- 49:14patterns of when Clemson has a down year with Tabo, they end up
- 49:18having a really good year following it.
- 49:21So it it it it will be overall I I'm excited.
- 49:25I don't know how to really feel about this game.
- 49:27I don't really even have anybody picked.
- 49:30I think if we're just going to go by home biases, I'm going to
- 49:33pick LSU. But again, it'll it'll it'll be
- 49:37interesting to see how this this ultimately ends up, ultimately
- 49:41ends up transpiring. And then of course, the last
- 49:44game for Saturday, for Week 1, we've got UCLA at Cal, even
- 49:50though it's not technically, they're not both technically in
- 49:53it anymore. Little PAC 12 after dark action
- 49:56September 5th 10:30 PM Eastern Time UCLA goes to Cal to take on
- 50:01the golden bears and I'm kind of surprised by this because
- 50:05DraftKings has Cal actually has UCLA they pick them as a 2 1/2
- 50:11point favorite in the spread but ESP.
- 50:14NS matchup predictor gives Cal a 58 percent chance of winning
- 50:18against UCLA and Nico Eli Malayalva Bob Chesney has the
- 50:25new head coach who brought a ton of his players with him from
- 50:27James Madison after having a very successful year.
- 50:29So this one, this one's a little bit interesting, but I am
- 50:34interesting to I am interested to see how does Cal's
- 50:37quarterback and man, I'm going to butcher this.
- 50:39I'm going to butcher this. So I apologize ahead of time If
- 50:42anybody wants to, you know, sound this out for me in the
- 50:45comments as far as like really spelling it out for me.
- 50:50Jeron, he's like K way Saga Pulele Puletele.
- 50:59That's saga Puletele probably saying they're wrong.
- 51:03But coming into a sophomore season, I thought had a really
- 51:06good freshman season, you know, 3400 yards, 18 touchdowns, 9
- 51:10picks. You know, he did a little bit of
- 51:13a rough time. But I mean, I'm I'm not going to
- 51:15sit here and act like Cal's roster was anything to, you
- 51:17know, really eye popping like, oh, wow, look at the wrong way.
- 51:20It's just, it's just OK. So I mean, I'm excited to see
- 51:25what he looks like. I'm excited to see what they do
- 51:28as a whole. If I again, if I had to pick, I
- 51:32think I don't know if I picked this one or not because I was
- 51:38like, again, I don't really know.
- 51:40I'm gonna have to look and see if I picked this one yet or not.
- 51:46I try to pick these typically, you know, a week before or so I,
- 51:51I try to also wait to see if anything's going to change.
- 51:55Let's see who do I have or have I picked this one yet?
- 51:58Oh, I have not picked this one yet.
- 51:59OK, so this is what I have not picked.
- 52:06And I guess if I, if I have to make a pick here on the show, I
- 52:11think I'm going to go, they're gonna go with DraftKings and
- 52:16they're gonna take UCLA. Nico.
- 52:20Nico gets another year with his guys.
- 52:22He gets another year now. It's going to be in a different
- 52:25system. It's not going to be the same
- 52:26coach and everything like that that he had.
- 52:30Oh yeah. Oh, yeah.
- 52:32At FA at was it Winky or yeah, not Busby.
- 52:38Yeah, I, I know exactly what you're talking about.
- 52:40I do remember that, but I think I'm gonna go to UCLA and again,
- 52:47according to ESPN would be the quote UN quote upset, but
- 52:49DraftKings has them as the favorite.
- 52:51So I'm I'm gonna take UCLAI believe in Nico.
- 52:53He's got the experience over saga there and Cal.
- 52:57So that that that I think I'm gonna go I think I'm gonna go
- 53:00with the Bruins. Bruins over that.
- 53:02I do remember that. Yep, he played pro baseball,
- 53:04then came back to play quarterback at FSU at 27.
- 53:07And if I remember right too, Brandon Whedon did the same
- 53:10thing for Oklahoma State, 'cause if I remember right, Brandon
- 53:14Whedon went in, played Major League Baseball and it ended up
- 53:18coming back. I think, No, wait, Wilson
- 53:25Wilson, Russell Wilson and Kyler Murray both got drafted by
- 53:29professional baseball team, but I don't think they came back to
- 53:31college though. But I, I do remember Florida
- 53:35State doing that and like I said, and, and Brandon Wheaton
- 53:37did the same thing. He came back, he was like 28
- 53:40when he got drafted by the Browns, I think 'cause he only
- 53:42had like one year of eligibility left for college football.
- 53:46So it, it, it does happen like it that that's kind of the crazy
- 53:50part where if you were like, gosh, can't do that.
- 53:52Now, I get it, professional baseball as compared to
- 53:55professional football. But like I said, unless they
- 53:57were in the league for like a year or two, I again, it was it
- 54:01was seven months ago, like they were playing college football as
- 54:05compared to their quote UN quote rookie season.
- 54:06They're not going to have grown or learned that much more to
- 54:10make what I would consider like a significant enough difference
- 54:14that it's the end of the world kind of thing.
- 54:16So that that's just my thought on it.
- 54:20But anyway, the other big match up that we have actually on a
- 54:23Monday or no, this is on Sunday. So we have Sunday college
- 54:27football, Wisconsin versus #4 Notre Dame, 7:30 PM Eastern, NBC
- 54:33at Lambeau Field. Both are going to be wearing
- 54:36their quote UN quote Shamrock series.
- 54:39Notre Dame has kind of their cool new uniform that's going to
- 54:42have it's like gold numbers with like little holes in them as
- 54:46well as the shamrocks on them. Wisconsin has these really
- 54:50bright red with silver numbers. I will say for somebody who's
- 54:54color blind, but it's cool because we'll see colored
- 54:58jerseys versus colored jerseys kind of thing.
- 55:00This one, yeah, I, I was pretty safe as far as my picks goes.
- 55:05DraftKings has the has Notre Dame's 20 1/2 point favorite
- 55:08against Wisconsin. The ESPN matchup predictor, 94%
- 55:13chance of winning again. This is one of those.
- 55:15And if and if you miss the show and it's completely fine.
- 55:19I talked about some of the coaches earlier on in the
- 55:21offseason that I believe were on the hot seat.
- 55:23Luke Fickle is definitely one of my top five coaches that's on
- 55:27the hot seat. It is one of those when I look
- 55:29at Wisconsin, if they don't have an identity anymore, it's not
- 55:33like the Paul Crist era of solid defense, pounding running game.
- 55:37Like there's nothing like there to me.
- 55:39There's nothing that Wisconsin truly does very well.
- 55:42Then I'm like, OK, they at least have this to go off of.
- 55:45They don't have much like special teams offense, defense,
- 55:48nothing like it's been very lackluster for me when I look at
- 55:53Wisconsin as compared to what they were like pretty recently.
- 55:57Like they were running back university them in Georgia for
- 56:00the longest time as far as you know, Melvin Gordon, Melvin
- 56:04Gordon, Jonathan Taylor, there's another kid and I can't, I think
- 56:10Braylon Allen. I think Braylon Allen came from
- 56:13Wisconsin as well. So I mean, they've had a slew of
- 56:15great running backs. Then you had Georgia with, as
- 56:17far as you know, Nick Chubb. Dang, here I am.
- 56:24It's like, Oh yeah, they have all these and I can't remember
- 56:27Todd Gurley. So I mean it, it's just crazy to
- 56:31see how much Wisconsin has fallen off of this.
- 56:34So I mean, I I'm definitely going to go with Notre Dame in
- 56:37this match up. Pretty, pretty hands down,
- 56:39easily. Notre Dame should just let their
- 56:44fans take the field and mean Sovs.
- 56:46Really. I don't say it.
- 56:47I even living here, being from Indiana, I've never really met a
- 56:51whole lot of mean Notre Dame fans, but I don't really, I
- 56:54don't I've never been up to South Bend either.
- 56:55So I I can't say that for sure. The other kind of big time match
- 57:00up that we're gonna have though that again, it'll be interesting
- 57:02to see for both teams #24 Louisville takes on #9 old miss
- 57:07in Nashville for the Liberty City Music Bowl to start the
- 57:12season or sorry, Liberty Mutual's Music City kick off.
- 57:17DraftKings has Ole Miss a 7 1/2 point favorite and ESP NS match
- 57:21at predictor has it at 73.6% chance for Ole Miss to win over
- 57:27Louisville. And, and this is what I find
- 57:29interesting because if you look at Louisville's history and
- 57:32especially with Jeff Braum, I mean they tripped up Miami.
- 57:34Like, they pretty much stopped Miami from being able to make an
- 57:37ACC Championship appearance last year.
- 57:41And if we know anything about Jeff Brahm, I mean, he had
- 57:44Purdue of all teams in the Big 10 championship game not that
- 57:48long ago. And I mean, heck, as far as
- 57:4920/20/22 or 2023 against Michigan on their way to, I
- 57:56believe on their way to the national title game, I mean, he
- 57:58had Purdue in the Big 10 championship.
- 58:00So I mean, he he can coach and he can coach very well.
- 58:04This is a Louisville team that I think has a lot of expectations.
- 58:07Again, they have a really easy ACC schedule.
- 58:11Their biggest opponent is Week 3 after this is against SMU.
- 58:15And again, a lot of people kind of think that'll be the, that'll
- 58:19probably be one of the biggest deciding factors of everybody
- 58:22has Miami locked in as far as facing the ACC goes.
- 58:26I think that'll probably be one of the big terming factors.
- 58:29But again, after looking at Virginia's schedule, I might be
- 58:33picking Virginia to. Face.
- 58:34Miami, maybe Virginia goes back to the ACC Championship game
- 58:38where they they ultimately end up losing the Duke, but maybe
- 58:41they maybe they try to take it this time if I remember.
- 58:45And I don't think, yeah, I hadn't picked this game either.
- 58:51I think if I have to pick, I'll go with old miss just because of
- 58:54Trinidad Chambliss. You know, the experience of
- 58:58that, you know, Pete Golding still there.
- 59:00They were able to keep a lot of continuity with their with their
- 59:03team. Now I know obviously they lost.
- 59:06They lost Charlie Wise. So the offense is going to look
- 59:08a little bit weirder, you know, and, and maybe Trinidad
- 59:12struggles as a result of that, but they still have Kiwan Lacey,
- 59:15they still have Trinidad. So I think that the opportunity
- 59:18for them to still be pretty good is there.
- 59:21But it'll it'll be it'll be interesting to see nonetheless,
- 59:25though. And then, of course, we have our
- 59:29final game of Week 1, which is going to be on Monday night.
- 59:35We have Monday night college football of all things, before
- 59:38the NFL season starts. We have #19 SNU at Florida
- 59:43State, 7:30 PM on ESPN this one. And, and I'm going to say this
- 59:49because I, I do feel for Florida State fans.
- 59:54That game against New Mexico was not not a good game.
- 1:00:01Now they obviously ended up winning 34 to 17.
- 1:00:05But it, it was rough. Like it was a rough watch.
- 1:00:08It, it, it was one of those when you're watching it, it, it's
- 1:00:11kind of hard to believe that the Florida State, you know, let New
- 1:00:15Mexico stay around in that game for as long as they did.
- 1:00:19Now I know it's it to give credit to New Mexico, it's, you
- 1:00:24know, they, they are a Division One team.
- 1:00:26It's it's it's not like, you know, they're, you know, like
- 1:00:29division two or Division Three, but you know, to only be up 17
- 1:00:33to 7 it going in halftime. It's like that's a little bit
- 1:00:38I'm not going to say concerning, but that's kind of one of those
- 1:00:41you you tilt your head like really that's that's what you're
- 1:00:44going to go with Timothy to hiss and throw food behind the
- 1:00:49visitors. The stands are wicked close to
- 1:00:51the field. OK, trade that 19.
- 1:00:56Tim thinks Florida State will be 19 next week.
- 1:00:59OK, So Tim, you're you're riding with your knolls.
- 1:01:02OK, I, I don't know, man, I mean SMU kind of same thing, you
- 1:01:09know, their, their coach has been absolutely great as far as
- 1:01:13bringing, you know, bring bringing SMU really to like good
- 1:01:17prominence. Kevin Jennings is back for his
- 1:01:20senior year. He was solid for him last year
- 1:01:22as he's actually been solid for him the last few years.
- 1:01:26And Brett Lashley, I mean, he, he has really done wonders with
- 1:01:30that SMU team a lot better than what I thought SMU was ever
- 1:01:34going to be, especially for the fact that they're not even
- 1:01:36getting paid by, they're not even getting paid by the ACC
- 1:01:42right now. I mean, they, they literally
- 1:01:44said, Hey, we will not take any money if it means that we can
- 1:01:48join the ACC to be in a Power 4 conference, to be taken more
- 1:01:52seriously. Like we'll, we will handle and
- 1:01:54take care of everything else. And I mean, they're and they're
- 1:01:57competing perfectly well. I mean, I think he only has 6
- 1:02:00losses since being in the ACC three years ago, since average
- 1:02:04of like 2 losses a year. That's pretty damn good for a
- 1:02:09team that, you know, just came up from the just came up from
- 1:02:12the group of 6 and whatnot. Then going up against Florida
- 1:02:17State. And Tim, you're probably not
- 1:02:19going to be a fan of this, but I'm just just telling you the
- 1:02:22facts for what they are. DraftKings they have SMU with
- 1:02:26three-point favorite and ESP NS matchup predictor has them at
- 1:02:30about a 56 percent chance of winning.
- 1:02:33I do I picked SMU to win this and it's nothing against Florida
- 1:02:40State and Ashton Daniels. He was fairly solid 17 to 27 a
- 1:02:44touchdown in a pick 202 yards. It it is one of those and Tim,
- 1:02:50you can you can tell me your thoughts real quick before we
- 1:02:52before we close out here. It seems like Mike Norville.
- 1:02:58I don't know if that's being being left out of that College
- 1:03:04Football Playoff. You know, three years ago after
- 1:03:07being undefeated, winning the ACC, the only power 14 to gone
- 1:03:11undefeated and be left out of the playoffs.
- 1:03:14I don't know if after that him losing Jordan Travis to injury
- 1:03:21and then they got destroyed by Georgia.
- 1:03:24I don't know if that broke Mike Norville and the program as a
- 1:03:29whole or not because it seemed like after that they bring in DJ
- 1:03:36Uyangale. That was an absolute nightmare.
- 1:03:40They completely fell apart that season and then last year it it
- 1:03:45seemed like there was a lot more hope.
- 1:03:46Last year. It's like, OK, they moved past
- 1:03:48it. They had a bad down year.
- 1:03:49They bring in a lot of guys. They bring in Tommy Castellanos
- 1:03:53at quarterback. They start out the year against
- 1:03:55Alabama. They are in jokes Campbell.
- 1:03:58It's like, OK, you know, let let's see how they do.
- 1:04:00They end up getting the big upset win over Bama and then
- 1:04:04it's like they just they fell apart again right after.
- 1:04:08Now it was technically, excuse me, it was technically a better
- 1:04:13season than the year prior. I will absolutely give them
- 1:04:18credit where credit is due as far as that goes.
- 1:04:21I mean, they started off they were three and O, they got ones
- 1:04:24against Bama, East, Texas A&M, Kent State.
- 1:04:27They did lose a close one at Virginia.
- 1:04:29I remember watching that. That one actually was a really
- 1:04:31good game. They lost a close one against
- 1:04:35Miami. They lost a close one against
- 1:04:37Pittsburgh. I think the one that really
- 1:04:39shocked everybody was the the really close loss at Stanford,
- 1:04:44you know, 20 to 13. That one, that one kind of
- 1:04:46surprised me. Like like Virginia, OK, they
- 1:04:48ended up going on to the ACC Championship.
- 1:04:51That one. That's like, OK, it took two
- 1:04:53overtimes for that one to come to fruition.
- 1:04:54That's not being the world. You lose 2 at the time, 3 Miami,
- 1:04:59and you only lose by 6. Again, it's a rival.
- 1:05:02It's a big time game, but again, you only lose by 6.
- 1:05:05Not the end of the world. Pittsburgh, you take that down
- 1:05:08to the wire. Pitt has always been a pretty
- 1:05:09good team, especially within the last few years.
- 1:05:12Not the Stanford, though. It's like, that's like that.
- 1:05:16I, I, I don't know about that one.
- 1:05:18And then they, they have a rebound game against Wake
- 1:05:20Forest. They win 42 to 7.
- 1:05:22They lose to Clemson, which again, that's a little bit of a
- 1:05:25surprise, especially considering kind of how down Clemson was
- 1:05:29last year. They lose 24 to 10.
- 1:05:31Big rebound game against W, not West Virginia, Virginia Tech 34
- 1:05:35to 14. And then they kind of lose in
- 1:05:38pretty bad fashion the last two games, you know, to NC State, 21
- 1:05:41to 11. And then of course, the final
- 1:05:43game against Florida, 40 to 21. Again, it's one of those when
- 1:05:49you look at Florida State and you think of where the program
- 1:05:52has been and the pride that's in this program, like they they
- 1:05:57should be better. I'll be honest, Tim, y'all have
- 1:06:00a, y'all have a really rough schedule because I mean, this is
- 1:06:04124567. So out of the next seven games,
- 1:06:10and I mean seven games, you've got SMU, you have to go to
- 1:06:16Tuscaloosa to take on Alabama. It's going to be a big revenge
- 1:06:19game. You do get to host Central
- 1:06:21Arkansas there after that, but then you host Virginia, then you
- 1:06:26have to travel to Louisville and then you have to travel to Miami
- 1:06:31and then you host Clemson like that.
- 1:06:34Oof. That is that is not a good or
- 1:06:37fun stretch. If I'm a, if I'm a Florida State
- 1:06:39fan, just being being completely honest with you, that one that,
- 1:06:43that, that was a little bit rough.
- 1:06:44You know, I, Tim, I know if that's your team, if you believe
- 1:06:48in them, they have more power to you.
- 1:06:49And I, I, I hope I'm wrong, man, that's going to be, that's going
- 1:06:53to be a rough time. But man, I'm, I'm excited
- 1:06:55though. I appreciate everybody watching.
- 1:06:57Thank you Tim for, for comment and tuning in.
- 1:06:59I 100% appreciate that. Good Sir, if you like this,
- 1:07:02please let me know. Please comment, tell me what you
- 1:07:04like. Tell me what you hated any type
- 1:07:06of engagement, good or bad, it's engagement.
- 1:07:09I appreciate it helps me a lot because I just love talking
- 1:07:11sports. To be 100% honest with you.
- 1:07:13That's what I love to do. Big shout out to military
- 1:07:16broadcast radio helping give veterans a voice.
- 1:07:20They really are a cool organization.
- 1:07:21I mean teaching veterans how to how to talk, how to do public
- 1:07:25speaking, get them set up with the equipment, getting them set
- 1:07:27up with cool graphics. Now I will say Joel, who was on
- 1:07:31the show last week, he taught me a lot as far as how to do string
- 1:07:34yard. Now I've kind of run off on my
- 1:07:36own. So you know, we'll humble brag.
- 1:07:37I do pretty decent work on my own, but but still MBR as a
- 1:07:42whole is great. There's a slew of great veterans
- 1:07:44on here that tell great stories, give great life advice, they
- 1:07:48talk sports, they talk just about everything.
- 1:07:51Can't give them enough credit where credit is due.
- 1:07:53And also big shout out to Gunfighter beard company.
- 1:07:55He's he's cool Marine out of South Carolina.
- 1:07:58He has great beard care products.
- 1:07:59They're natural, they're great. And not just for your beard.
- 1:08:02Like honestly, I found out when you get sunburned, take a little
- 1:08:05bit of beard oil. Put that on your sunburn, man.
- 1:08:07It keeps your skin from peeling, helps keep it hydrated, helps
- 1:08:10keep it moist, which also people hate moist.
- 1:08:13But just letting you know that's that's the truth of the matter.
- 1:08:17It smells good. And of course it's the fall
- 1:08:18time. So he's going to have a ton of
- 1:08:19fall since he's going to have a ton of winter since come out.
- 1:08:22So you'll be able to be kind of festive for the holidays.
- 1:08:25And I'm just saying gents, if you do, the ladies love man
- 1:08:29smell good. Just throwing them out there.
- 1:08:31Thank you again, Tim for joining.
- 1:08:33Appreciate everybody tuning in. We will be back next week for
- 1:08:35all of the post week 1. We'll see what happens with this
