- 0:00As we grow and experience life, there may come a time when we
- 0:05become disillusioned. We may feel like there is no
- 0:09meaning or significance to what we do.
- 0:13We feel like we are running in a hamster wheel or on a treadmill,
- 0:18always striving to earn money to survive and maybe have a bit of
- 0:23enjoyment. We experience empty enjoyments
- 0:27and superficial relationships. We wind up asking why.
- 0:34This can be a real turning point for an individual who is ready
- 0:37for taking up the spiritual life.
- 0:40A feeling of throwing it all away and escaping rises up.
- 0:45We call these feelings many things.
- 0:48We may call it nausea, as the existentialists have been prone
- 0:52to do. We may call it midlife crisis,
- 0:57or postpartum depression, or any number of things that represent
- 1:02a change in our feelings and emotions away from the external
- 1:06life we've been living. We may call it teenage
- 1:10rebellion, as the young person looks at the life path in front
- 1:15of him and does not accept that this is really what life is all
- 1:19about. We may not know why, we may not
- 1:24have any sense of what we want to do or how we can simply
- 1:28change our lives, but we know that we have to do something.
- 1:34While this feeling, this experience can help us to
- 1:39recognize that there is something different, something
- 1:42deeper, something meaningful about our lives, it cannot of
- 1:47itself be the basis for a long term transformation that would
- 1:52amount to a falling into a state of depression, a temasek
- 1:57rejection of the life without a new purpose arising.
- 2:01Wallowing in this state may lead to alcohol, drugs, depression, a
- 2:07life of dissipation, and even to thoughts of suicide or self harm
- 2:13in some way or another. When we look at individuals who
- 2:18have returned from a near death experience, we frequently hear
- 2:22that they have found a new meaning, a new understanding, a
- 2:27new mission that drives them forward.
- 2:30A similar turning toward a deeper reflection can lead
- 2:34people to a search for meaning in religion, in philosophy, in
- 2:39spiritual practices. And as they deepen their
- 2:42practice, they begin to sense that there is in fact a deeper
- 2:47purpose, and that their life has a meaning, and it is worth
- 2:52living to realize that. Some find this as a foundation
- 2:57of solace. Some experience a positive sense
- 3:00of joy when they open up to the new vision that presents itself
- 3:04to them once they move beyond the weariness and emptiness of
- 3:10their external lives. The Buddha was a Prince who
- 3:15lived a life of luxury in a sheltered environment.
- 3:19With every desire met, he was surrounded with all that the
- 3:23external life could offer. Eventually he found out that
- 3:28this life was a life of illusion, and he rejected it,
- 3:34understood the four noble truths of human life, and set off to
- 3:39find a deeper realization. He successfully moved from
- 3:44renunciation of the meaningless life of aristocratic luxury to a
- 3:49deeply meaningful and personal experience of liberation and
- 3:55spiritual truth, Triorrobindo writes.
- 3:59Quote Certainly if one is satisfied with life, entranced
- 4:05by it, so that it shuts out the sense of the soul within, or
- 4:09hampers the attraction to the Divine, then a period of
- 4:13viragya, sorrow, depression, a painful breaking of the vital
- 4:19ties, may be necessary, and many go through that.
- 4:24But once the turn is made, it should be to the One Direction,
- 4:28and a perpetual viragia is not needed.
- 4:33Nor, when we speak of cheerfulness as the best
- 4:35condition, do we mean a cheerful following of the vital life, but
- 4:41a cheerful following of the path to the Divine, which is not
- 4:45impossible if the mind and heart take the right view and posture.
- 4:51At any rate, if positive cheerfulness is not possible in
- 4:55one's case, still one should not acquiesce in or mentally support
- 5:01a constant depression and sadness.
