Transcript
- 0:19Speaker 1: Hey, hurdlers, you're listening to another installment of Five Minute
- 0:23Speaker 1: Friday from Hurdle.
- 0:25Speaker 2: What a week? Can I tell you?
- 0:27Speaker 1: Everything changes, like all of my feelings change when it's
- 0:31Speaker 1: not oppressively humid outside. This morning on my run, which
- 0:38Speaker 1: I was super super tired to do, but did it anyway,
- 0:42Speaker 1: and we'll talk about that today, it felt like a
- 0:45Speaker 1: little bit of spring and I'll take it. I'll take
- 0:48Speaker 1: any little bit of day that happens where I don't
- 0:53Speaker 1: feel like I'm literally just like swimming through soup.
- 0:57Speaker 2: Anyway. For five Minute Friday to day, if you're new.
- 0:59Speaker 1: To the sea, let me introduce it a little story
- 1:02Speaker 1: to finish off your week, a little takeaway that I
- 1:04Speaker 1: want to offer you. Then I answer a listener question
- 1:09Speaker 1: and that's it. I'm also going to direct you to
- 1:11Speaker 1: the Weekly Hurdle newsletter. I for a long time put
- 1:14Speaker 1: the highlights of the week, content picks and stuff like
- 1:17Speaker 1: that that I'm digging in this segment, but it seems
- 1:21Speaker 1: to me that that kind of stuff is served better
- 1:25Speaker 1: in an email format, So I would highly encourage you
- 1:28Speaker 1: too subscribe to the Weekly Hurdle. I'd love to land
- 1:33Speaker 1: in your inbox every Friday, I digress this week for
- 1:36Speaker 1: five Minute Friday. I feel as though this week the
- 1:39Speaker 1: little voice in my head has been like wild in
- 1:43Speaker 1: that I have been having so many thoughts of both
- 1:48Speaker 1: you can totally do this, You've got this, You're awesome,
- 1:51Speaker 1: and also like, oh my god, I cannot do this.
- 1:54Speaker 2: What are you doing?
- 1:55Speaker 1: Maybe you should stop, maybe you should start over, maybe
- 1:57Speaker 1: you should just walk away.
- 1:58Speaker 2: Et cetera, et cetera, et cetera.
- 2:01Speaker 1: Now I know that we all deal with this conflictingness often.
- 2:06Speaker 2: I'm really great with words today, if you can't tell.
- 2:09Speaker 1: But a really big example of this for me was
- 2:13Speaker 1: during my workout on Tuesday. I shared about this on
- 2:16Speaker 1: Instagram earlier this week, but it took me a really
- 2:19Speaker 1: long time to join get involved with the running community
- 2:23Speaker 1: here in New York because I was just scared about,
- 2:26Speaker 1: you know, in my head, not being good enough, right,
- 2:30Speaker 1: like not being enough of a quote unquote runner to
- 2:33Speaker 1: run with other people and being slow and that none
- 2:36Speaker 1: of these other people would have bad days, and just
- 2:38Speaker 1: so many things that I was building up in my
- 2:40Speaker 1: mind that were stories I was telling myself that were
- 2:43Speaker 1: totally not true.
- 2:45Speaker 2: I realize now in retrospect that if.
- 2:48Speaker 1: You run your runner, and that in any community wherever
- 2:52Speaker 1: you are, there is certainly room for you to join
- 2:56Speaker 1: in that the running community, regardless again of you're at,
- 3:01Speaker 1: is going to accept you. And yes, like of course
- 3:04Speaker 1: we're there to push each other, but it's bigger than that.
- 3:07Speaker 1: It's if you have one of those days where you
- 3:10Speaker 1: feel like your only speed is crawl, then I promise
- 3:13Speaker 1: you someone in your community that cares about you, because
- 3:17Speaker 1: there will be people that care about you, is going
- 3:19Speaker 1: to crawl with you. That is what the community is about. Anyway, Okay,
- 3:23Speaker 1: Tuesday workout. I am at Brooklyn Track Club. It's the
- 3:27Speaker 1: track club that I were run with here in New York.
- 3:30Speaker 1: And the workout was fourteen by four hundred meters. So
- 3:33Speaker 1: what that means is you run one lap around the
- 3:35Speaker 1: track that's four hundred meters at whatever the pace is
- 3:38Speaker 1: for the workout. So the workout this week was starting
- 3:41Speaker 1: at I believe ten k pace, so the pace that
- 3:44Speaker 1: you would ideally run a ten k at and working
- 3:47Speaker 1: down to five k or mile pace. So you run
- 3:50Speaker 1: one four hundred meters lap and then you rest for
- 3:53Speaker 1: the designated amount of rest time. The rest time I
- 3:55Speaker 1: believe was sixty seconds so fourteen times you run four
- 3:59Speaker 1: hundred meters, you rest sixty seconds.
- 4:01Speaker 2: Cool, We're on the same page.
- 4:03Speaker 1: I felt like a lot of people at the track
- 4:05Speaker 1: were starting this workout and we were all thinking that
- 4:08Speaker 1: we're going to run around the same pace. So one
- 4:10Speaker 1: of the pace groups was as big as like twenty people,
- 4:13Speaker 1: I want to say, and I was feeling a little
- 4:16Speaker 1: overwhelmed in that, and so I decided to start going
- 4:19Speaker 1: on my own scheduling. I was running my own four
- 4:22Speaker 1: hundred meter repeats solo, and by like the fifth or
- 4:25Speaker 1: the sixth repeat, I kind of figured out that the
- 4:28Speaker 1: group that was a little bit ahead of me was
- 4:31Speaker 1: actually running the same pace as me. And it was
- 4:34Speaker 1: three guys in this group. Little intimidating as a woman
- 4:38Speaker 1: to walk up to this group of three guys, but
- 4:40Speaker 1: I was like, I'm going to go for it, and
- 4:42Speaker 1: I mean, we're all friendly, so it's not like I
- 4:44Speaker 1: was intimidated because there were three guys, but more so
- 4:46Speaker 1: because they're like three guys running fast around the track.
- 4:48Speaker 1: You get what I'm saying here. Anyway, I go up
- 4:51Speaker 1: to the three guys. We do one rep, two rep,
- 4:54Speaker 1: three reps. I'm feeling good as the worker goes on,
- 4:57Speaker 1: I mean, you're starting to get fatigued, and all of
- 5:00Speaker 1: the little voice of my head starts like going off,
- 5:05Speaker 1: I don't know if I can do this.
- 5:06Speaker 2: You can do this. I don't know if I can
- 5:07Speaker 2: do this.
- 5:07Speaker 1: Shoot, maybe I should fall out, Maybe I should go
- 5:09Speaker 1: back to doing this by myself.
- 5:10Speaker 2: No, you can do this, keep going, You've got this,
- 5:12Speaker 2: You've got this, et cetera, et cetera.
- 5:15Speaker 1: By like the twelfth rep, I was like, shoot, like
- 5:18Speaker 1: I really just don't know what's happening here, Like I
- 5:20Speaker 1: don't know if I can do this. And I kept going,
- 5:25Speaker 1: and I kind of like hushed that voice inside of
- 5:28Speaker 1: my head and I chose to listen to the positives
- 5:31Speaker 1: and yes, like I'm a realist, but it felt so
- 5:33Speaker 1: good just to like believe that I was capable, And
- 5:37Speaker 1: even when it just felt hard, it's all hell, I
- 5:40Speaker 1: was like, you can do it, keep going, keep pushing,
- 5:43Speaker 1: Like if the worst thing in the world, let's be honest,
- 5:47Speaker 1: was that, like I did fall off of a rep
- 5:49Speaker 1: so to speak.
- 5:51Speaker 2: Then like I knew I was going to survive.
- 5:53Speaker 1: And so by the time the last REP came around,
- 5:56Speaker 1: which was my fastest rep of the day, I just
- 5:59Speaker 1: felt like so proud of myself for sticking it out
- 6:01Speaker 1: and for staying with them, and for not letting the
- 6:03Speaker 1: little voice deter me from going after my own big potential.
- 6:07Speaker 1: It's something that is an ever work in progress. It's
- 6:10Speaker 1: something that I'm sure many of you can relate to.
- 6:14Speaker 1: And so let this little story be a reminder to
- 6:16Speaker 1: you this week that you can and that starts with
- 6:21Speaker 1: believing the positive side about little voice. My prompt for
- 6:26Speaker 1: you this week, we're talking about confidence here, so I'm
- 6:30Speaker 1: going to go in that direction. Write down what the
- 6:33Speaker 1: word confidence means to you and how can you improve yours? Again,
- 6:39Speaker 1: what does the word confidence mean to you? And how
- 6:43Speaker 1: can you improve yours? And now a listener question from Emma,
- 6:48Speaker 1: who won herself a pair of gooders by submitting this week.
- 6:53Speaker 1: Heads up, if you submit a listener question to be
- 6:56Speaker 1: answered on the show by clicking leave a voicemail in
- 6:59Speaker 1: the show notes, you too could be up for some
- 7:01Speaker 1: new sunglasses. So go for it now. Emma's question.
- 7:07Speaker 3: Hi Emily, my name is Emma and I am a
- 7:11Speaker 3: hurdle listener and lover based out of Connecticut. Thank you
- 7:14Speaker 3: so much for continuing to serve us all of this
- 7:16Speaker 3: amazing content and connect us with these voices. I guess
- 7:20Speaker 3: kind of a gross question today, but something I hope
- 7:23Speaker 3: I'm not alone in as all seasons outdoor runner who's
- 7:28Speaker 3: trying to increase weekly mileage but dealing with some gnarly
- 7:30Speaker 3: blisters other than switching up shoes, socks, and getting a
- 7:34Speaker 3: professional shoe fitting, all of which I've done, do you
- 7:38Speaker 3: or anyone you ever come in contact with, have any
- 7:40Speaker 3: tips and tricks for preventing and dealing with blisters while
- 7:45Speaker 3: also maintaining our hopefully even increasing weekly run mileage. Thanks
- 7:51Speaker 3: so much in advance.
- 7:53Speaker 1: This is a good one, and it sounds like you
- 7:55Speaker 1: have done a lot of the things that I would
- 7:58Speaker 1: throw back into the mix here. It's super important if
- 8:01Speaker 1: you're getting blisters that you make sure that you get
- 8:03Speaker 1: your feet looked at, because this could be an indication
- 8:06Speaker 1: that maybe you're wearing the wrong sneaker for your gate type.
- 8:09Speaker 1: I've talked about how to figure this out in episodes
- 8:12Speaker 1: in the past, so I'm going to link to a
- 8:14Speaker 1: past Hurdle Moment episode on how to choose the right
- 8:17Speaker 1: sneakers for you in the show.
- 8:19Speaker 2: Notes. Also really important that you mentioned here socks.
- 8:22Speaker 1: Socks can play a huge role in what's going on
- 8:26Speaker 1: with blisters on your feet. Remember, blisters happen because of friction,
- 8:32Speaker 1: because of rubbing on the skin, which your sock is
- 8:35Speaker 1: the closest thing next to your foot. So it's important
- 8:38Speaker 1: that you keep those in mind when you're figuring out
- 8:40Speaker 1: your Goldilocks foot situation. There are what I will also
- 8:45Speaker 1: add into the mix here is that there are certain
- 8:48Speaker 1: bombs or lotions of sorts that you can put on
- 8:51Speaker 1: your feet to help with this. Body Glide makes a
- 8:55Speaker 1: foot glide that I use regularly, and I cannot recommend
- 8:59Speaker 1: it enough. Block and again, I would say a thousand times.
- 9:02Speaker 1: I want to reinforce this. If this is happening to
- 9:04Speaker 1: you regularly, definitely definitely head on ind to a run
- 9:07Speaker 1: specialty shop and see how they can help you. It's
- 9:10Speaker 1: always good to have someone give you another opinion.
- 9:13Speaker 2: That's it for this week.
- 9:14Speaker 1: I want to give some kudos and some love to
- 9:16Speaker 1: everyone participating in the Another journal Conquered challenge.
- 9:20Speaker 2: You guys are doing great.
- 9:21Speaker 1: Stick with it if you want access to all the
- 9:24Speaker 1: prompts and to get three journaling prompts in your inbox

- 9:37Speaker 1: can still sign up. It's not too late. The link
- 9:39Speaker 1: to sign up for the journaling challenge is in the
