Colwash Fire: Wildfire Contained After 38K Acres | Seattle News
A massive wildfire, the Colwash Fire, tore through Yakima and Benton counties, burning over 38,000 acres sparked by lightning and fueled by 21 mph winds. Though it jumped from Yakama Nation land into Benton County and sent smoke 40 miles to the Tri-Cities, no injuries occurred and nearly 2,000 evacuated homes were safely reoccupied by Sunday night. With containment nearing 50%, officials blame a dry spring after a mild, wet winter for this latest in a string of destructive fires plaguing the region.
