- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:04culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:07media, the creator economy and the digital space.
- 0:10Every Monday through Thursday and sometimes Fridays.
- 0:14I'm your host, Lauren Meisner, the founder of the youth digital
- 0:17media brand Centennial World's. Welcome back to Mini Scroll,
- 0:22everyone. OK, before I get into the
- 0:24stories for today, Please remember to rate, review and
- 0:26subscribe. Please Spotify star rate US.
- 0:29We're trying to get to 1000 Spotify star ratings by the end
- 0:32of the year. You guys are rating us pretty
- 0:35quickly this week. They've been going up and up, so
- 0:37please keep it going. It's very exciting.
- 0:40All right, I have 4 stories for you guys.
- 0:42One of them is kind of quick, but let's just get into it.
- 0:45So the first story that I have for you guys is Be Better has
- 0:49returned to TikTok, launching a spam account with mixed
- 0:54responses. So Be Better, whose real name is
- 0:57Marcos, has gone viral once again, this time not for his
- 1:02marketing videos. If you don't know, Be Better.
- 1:04He gained traction online for his The Downfall Of series,
- 1:08where he dissected a particular public figure or celebrity and
- 1:12how they lost relevance. He soon became somewhat
- 1:15controversial for his takes and also his family's political
- 1:18affiliations. And I've always been not the
- 1:22biggest Be Better fan. I think the first video I ever
- 1:25saw of his was The Downfall of I think it wasn't, Oh no, it was
- 1:29Charlie and Dixie. That was it of the D'amelio
- 1:31sisters. And he was comparing them to the
- 1:33Kardashians, talking about how the Kardashians have always
- 1:36launched brands that really aligned with their persona and
- 1:40their interests, and that's why they worked out.
- 1:42And that's why Charlie and Dixie's businesses aren't
- 1:44working out because they're launching like random shit like
- 1:47popcorn. And I'm like, have you done any
- 1:49research into the Kardashians? They have literally decades
- 1:52under their belts of launching scammy shitty companies that
- 1:56have nothing to do with who they are as a people just because now
- 2:00in their like 40s they have launched these brands that are
- 2:04successful like Good American Skims, Lemmy.
- 2:07They've like found their footing and actually have launched
- 2:10brands that align with who they are and how we know them
- 2:13publicly. Doesn't mean that they didn't
- 2:14have literally decades before that of launching completely
- 2:18irrelevant brands just for cash grabs.
- 2:20Anyways that is a bit of a rant there.
- 2:22His primary TikTok account, Be Better Company has 1.6 million
- 2:26followers. But this story starts with
- 2:28Marcos creating a spam account to reach a smaller audience.
- 2:32The account had the handle at Marcos bits at the time of
- 2:36recording. The account is actually no
- 2:37longer available. It may have been deleted by him
- 2:40or taken down by TikTok. There is no confirmation either
- 2:44way. I did see the account live so I
- 2:46can verify that it did exist. OK so having said that, there
- 2:50are reposts of his content floating around TikTok.
- 2:53One video has gained specific traction with Marcos talking
- 2:57about why he quote quote disappeared from the platform.
- 3:00In the video, he addresses why he stopped talking about the
- 3:03Justin Baldoni and Blake Lively case, dispelling the rumors that
- 3:06he had been paid off by the team.
- 3:08He says that after speaking about the Justin and Blake case,
- 3:11he had become one of the most popular creators covering the
- 3:14topic on TikTok. Because of this, social media
- 3:16users started sending him tips and confidential information.
- 3:20He claims that he had received one really confronting piece of
- 3:23information that was, quote, incredibly dark, very, very
- 3:26disturbing information. He didn't say anything further
- 3:29and he kept it pretty vague to protect the source and the
- 3:32information since apparently it is sensitive.
- 3:34However, he did mention that he believes the information to be
- 3:37true. People reached out to me with
- 3:40sensitive information. People told me things off the
- 3:43record and sort of treated me as an investigative journalist,
- 3:47even though I am technically not a journalist.
- 3:50That is not my career, nor is that what I went to school for.
- 3:54But for whatever reason, people trusted me and I got a lot of
- 3:57contacts on things that I wish with my whole body I could have
- 4:02shared with you guys. So the reason why I'm making
- 4:04this video now is in the hopes that I can connect with somebody
- 4:08who is an actual journalist who can guide me on the best way to
- 4:13vet this information. Because the last thing that I'm
- 4:15going to do is say something that I'm not 110% sure beyond a
- 4:20shadow of doubt is 100% real. Maybe part of it is real.
- 4:24And even if there's a minor thing that I need to correct, I
- 4:27need to, I need to get my ducks in a row and understand exactly
- 4:31what is true and what is not. And then also I need to share it
- 4:35with somebody who can eventually, you know, share the
- 4:41information with the public, with the buffer of the legal
- 4:45protections that exist in a mainstream media outlet.
- 4:49OK, so there's been mixed response to this content.
- 4:53There's one camp of people who are locked into this.
- 4:56They believe what he's saying and they're worried about him,
- 4:59hoping that he is protecting himself.
- 5:01Accordingly, they believe that TikTok has removed his account
- 5:05because of this video. And then there is a totally
- 5:08other camp who are skeptical of this sub.
- 5:10Users have questioned whether he even has this piece of
- 5:13information or if this is just a play for relevancy, clout and
- 5:17money. Especially because it is notable
- 5:19he has moved from Canada to New York recently, I guess.
- 5:23And in Canada, we don't have the creator fund.
- 5:25We also don't have it here in Australia.
- 5:26So he would have made no money from his videos.
- 5:29And now having moved to New York, if he got a new SIM, a new
- 5:32phone number, all of that kind of stuff, then he could get an
- 5:34American TikTok account and start making money on TikTok
- 5:37from his views. And that camp of people largely,
- 5:40largely believes he possibly took down his own account again,
- 5:44to add to kind of like the mystery around this situation
- 5:47and get that clout. But Speaking of clout, we need
- 5:50to talk about Timothy Chalamet's new 18 minute movie ad because
- 5:55this is actually good clout. OK?
- 5:58Whatever is going on with be better is not necessarily
- 6:01positive, but Timothy Chalamet, he's going viral for the right
- 6:05reasons. So a few days ago, Timothy
- 6:07Chalamet dropped a social video to promote his upcoming film
- 6:10Marty Supreme. And everyone is talking about it
- 6:13because basically, it looks nothing like what you would
- 6:16expect a movie promo to look like.
- 6:18The video is 18 minutes long and it's a Zoom meeting with the A
- 6:2224 marketing team, or at least that is what is supposedly
- 6:26trying to parody. Throughout the video, Timothy
- 6:28rattles off increasingly insane ideas for promoting the film,
- 6:32like like painting the Statue of Liberty and the Eiffel Tower and
- 6:36getting a giant orange blimp. It's obviously satirical, but
- 6:40aside from the very insane ideas that Timothy is throwing out in
- 6:44the Zoom meeting, it feels exactly like a corporate
- 6:49creative brainstorm over Zoom. Like it is so on point.
- 6:53It's actually so freaky. And one of the funniest parts of
- 6:56this ad is that some people online initially believed that
- 7:00this was not an ad. And they thought that this this
- 7:03was just showing us that Timothy is challenging to work with.
- 7:06He's on a power trip. People didn't know that this was
- 7:09fake initially. And I feel like that is a marker
- 7:12of a good campaign, one that stirs up a bit of controversy.
- 7:16But it's very harmless, you know, and it gets people
- 7:19talking. Not to mention that this is
- 7:21fully viral and is another example of how you don't need to
- 7:24spend tons of money to create a really buzzy viral campaign on
- 7:29social. I saw somebody on TikTok write
- 7:31this in the comment section. They basically said that this ad
- 7:34was so successful because they combined a recognizable format,
- 7:38which is corporate Zoom calls, with a satirical take on a
- 7:41specific subculture, which again is corporate corporate
- 7:45marketing. Ashwin, who's a popular
- 7:47marketing creator on TikTok, also noted that it's successful
- 7:50because while trailers may generate views, they don't
- 7:53typically generate discussion because they're not inherently
- 7:56that shareable. Whereas this is shareable
- 7:59because it's so funny. Like I said, it's poking fun at
- 8:02a subculture. People can relate to it.
- 8:04And of course then that generates discussion.
- 8:07Instead, a Zoom meeting, a format everyone instantly
- 8:09recognizes, followed by an 18 minute very hard to watch
- 8:12meeting with some great one liners is something that drives
- 8:15instant recognition, gets sent to friends and gets people
- 8:17commenting. The result is 10 million views
- 8:19on Instagram, cross shares on other social channels for a
- 8:22video that at most cost a few $1000 to produce.
- 8:25It's clever meta wear marketing that understands the channel,
- 8:28the culture and importantly, the importance of format.
- 8:31OK, the next story that I have for you guys.
- 8:33This is the short one, but there were rumors over the past 24
- 8:36hours that Brittany Broski and Chris Martin from Coldplay were
- 8:40dating. So Brittany Broski and Chris
- 8:42Martin were photographed together and it was posted to
- 8:46Dumois. They were at a Tame Impala
- 8:48concert yesterday and immediately everybody was like
- 8:51what the fuck are they dating? Because the paparazzi shots it
- 8:55actually does look like they're either leaving or arriving at
- 8:58the venue together. However, Britney cleared this up
- 9:01on her Instagram stories today. So she actually first cleared it
- 9:04up in the Dumois comment section and then she shared the Dumois
- 9:07post to her Instagram stories and wrote now what the fuck is
- 9:10this LMFAO me genuinely having no idea Chris Martin was next to
- 9:14me. I'm a huge fan.
- 9:15Hi Chris. Broski Nation, we've made it to
- 9:17Dumois so I guess they're not dating.
- 9:19I don't know, what do you guys think?
- 9:20I've seen some people be like this is of course I'm just
- 9:22trying to keep it under wraps. I thought Chris Martin was like
- 9:25in a relationship with somebody. Wait, wasn't he dating?
- 9:28Isn't he dating Dakota Johnson? Did they break up?
- 9:30OK yes they broke up in June. What do you guys think?
- 9:36I don't think this is real just because I don't think that she
- 9:38would go to those lengths to like, defend it and be like,
- 9:40this is not true. I didn't even know he was there.
- 9:42OK. The last story that I have for
- 9:44you guys is the DoorDash girl has been arrested after her
- 9:48story of being exposed to a naked man while delivering food
- 9:52went so viral last month. So I covered this original story
- 9:56a few weeks ago. If you want a full recap of what
- 9:59happened, go listen to that. But in short, in October, a door
- 10:03dash driver named Olivia Henderson posted a video on
- 10:06TikTok saying quote, my customer requested that their order be
- 10:09left at their front door. And when I arrived at their
- 10:11house, their front door was wide open and they were within
- 10:14eyesight of the front door lying on the couch indecently exposed
- 10:17to me. She posted a video of the man
- 10:19allegedly passed out on the couch exposed her content around
- 10:23this really blew up and it divided viewers.
- 10:26Some people felt like this was intentional sexual harassment
- 10:29from the man. Like this man knew that he had a
- 10:32female DoorDash driver and they felt like because of that, she
- 10:35had every right to film him and post it online.
- 10:38Whereas others felt like maybe he just passed out or something
- 10:41and she had invaded his privacy by posting him online like that.
- 10:45So over the past few days, people online have been saying
- 10:48that she was arrested. And I hadn't reported on it
- 10:51because I wasn't able to verify that yet.
- 10:53But now the Oswego, I think is how you pronounce it.
- 10:57New York Police Department has issued a press release
- 10:59confirming this. They said it was reported that a
- 11:03male DoorDash customer had been nude inside his residence when a
- 11:06DoorDash delivery driver dropped off a food order.
- 11:09An investigation was initiated by the Oswego Police Department
- 11:13during which it was discovered that the delivery driver had
- 11:16taken video of the nude male. The video, along with the
- 11:19subsequent investigation, indicates that the male was
- 11:22incapacitated and unconscious on his couch due to alcohol
- 11:26consumption. And then this is from USA TODAY,
- 11:29they wrote. Police said that the video was
- 11:31taken from outside the residence and it was posted on social
- 11:33media by the driver, where police said it drew significant
- 11:36attention. The man cooperated with the
- 11:38investigation, Oswego police said.
- 11:41They did not find that a sexual assault occurred, they said in
- 11:44the release. Henderson, though, was arrested
- 11:46and charged with one count of second degree unlawful
- 11:49surveillance and one count of first degree dissemination of an
- 11:52unlawful surveillance image. Both are felony charges.
- 11:56Henderson was released pending a court date.
- 11:58See, I'm not really sure if we'll get any more information
- 12:01on what happened in this case. I understand why people are so
- 12:04interested in it. Like it was brought to us and it
- 12:08just went so, so viral. So I understand why people want
- 12:10to cover it and want to talk about and want to share opinions
- 12:13on it. But I think this is probably the
- 12:16end of the road for this situation as much as we're going
- 12:20to learn online. Anyways, guys, that's it for
- 12:22Mini scroll today. Thank you so much for listening.
- 12:25I love you guys. Please remember to rate, review
- 12:27and subscribe. Please Spotify star rate US.
- 12:30And actually, I will not talk to you guys tomorrow because
- 12:33there's a deep dive tomorrow. There's a big deep dive.
- 12:36It's our last like big video essay of the year.
- 12:38We still have two deep dives in December, but I think both of
- 12:41them will actually be Annabelle and I together, which is
- 12:45exciting 'cause I don't know if you guys have ever seen
- 12:47Annabelle and I podcast together.
- 12:48So the episode tomorrow is a big one.
- 12:51It's an exciting one and it's a niche 1.
- 12:53I really think it's a pretty unique topic, so I hope you guys
- 12:57like it. Anyways, I will talk to you guys
- 12:59for Mini on Monday. Bye.
