- 0:00On this episode of Paranormal Lens, I have man
- 0:02eyes? Yes. Not mayonnaise. You do have man eyes.
- 0:06Man eyes. Man eyes. Ben doesn't know how to search
- 0:12for comments using girl eyes. So this episode
- 0:17is inspired by a comment we got on a post that
- 0:19went semi -viral and there's like 290 something
- 0:22comments. And I tried finding the comment again
- 0:24because I screenshotted it, but then accidentally
- 0:26deleted it after sending it to the two of them.
- 0:29And neither of them saved it to their phones.
- 0:32So I had to find it again. I was like, that'll
- 0:34be easy. I already found it once. Couldn't find
- 0:37the comment. I thought it got deleted. I was
- 0:38like, we don't have an episode. If I can't find
- 0:40this comment, I was stressing out. And then they
- 0:45tell me. you just need girl eyes. We found them
- 0:48in five seconds. We did. We really did. If I
- 0:54know correctly, I think it's like this third
- 0:56comment down. It's literally the third comment.
- 0:58Third comment down. It's the third comment down.
- 1:03So it's the first comment, the second comment,
- 1:05and then click the comment to the comment, and
- 1:08then there it is. So everyone's joining this
- 1:11in the middle of the chaos. you know this is
- 1:16like whoa a lot we're just bombarding on you
- 1:18right at the top but this has seriously been
- 1:20an hour -long endeavor to try to find this comment
- 1:24and i was just like we have to start recording
- 1:26now they're saying i have man eyes this is like
- 1:28revelation yeah yeah you have man eyes ben Yeah,
- 1:31because it took you days and you couldn't find
- 1:33it. And then we hop on saying, I guess, but we
- 1:35can find it in like five seconds. Well, Brianna
- 1:37said that. And what did we do? And we actually
- 1:39found it within a minute. Literally days and
- 1:41then, you know, an hour just wasting your time.
- 1:44Man, what would we do without you? 289 comments.
- 1:48I don't know. Probably still be looking for that
- 1:50comment, eh? Most likely, honestly. Fucking man
- 1:54eyes. You know what I mean by man eyes, right?
- 2:02No. Oh, yeah. Of course you don't understand.
- 2:06That's why I was like, we got to record. I don't
- 2:08know what this means. I mean man eyes because,
- 2:10you know, the stereotype of men will look for
- 2:15something for hours and hours and hours and not
- 2:18be able to find it. They ask their mom, their
- 2:22wife, their girlfriend, whatever. I can't find
- 2:24this. Can you help? find it in two seconds and
- 2:28it's literally in the same spot they had been
- 2:30looking. Literally! That happens all the time!
- 2:34You have man eyes, Ben! No! What happens is Angela,
- 2:38who lives with me, she will take something, move
- 2:42it, and then move it back to mess with me because
- 2:44she knows I'm looking for it. And she's like,
- 2:46oh, fuck! That happens all the time. I put everything
- 2:50back to where they are. We're very disorganized.
- 2:52We don't put things away right away. But when
- 2:55we do... We put them back. We put them back where
- 2:58they belong. Where they came from. Ben just doesn't
- 3:00know where anything is since we moved into this
- 3:03apartment a year ago. Because you won't let me
- 3:05decorate. What the fuck do you mean? Do you see
- 3:09this apartment? You said that doesn't go there.
- 3:12That goes over here. Not in my apartment. That's
- 3:15not decorating. That's organizing. There's a
- 3:17big difference between organizing and decorating.
- 3:24Hang on. Before we go on this tangent, we didn't
- 3:29even actually discuss what the topic is that
- 3:33we're talking about. We just said, oh, we were
- 3:35trying to find the comment for this whole episode.
- 3:40We didn't even talk about what we're... Do you
- 3:43remember on one of the very first podcasts, we
- 3:47played a game of rock, paper, scissors three
- 3:50times for an audio podcast before we even introduced
- 3:54the topic? So this is still an improvement. That's
- 3:58so true. Also, we played rock, paper, scissors
- 4:01three -way, which does not work. And it took
- 4:08us how many times before we realized that? So
- 4:11we got a comment. uh where is it oh my god i'm
- 4:19dead serious okay i found it and i sent it to
- 4:22you over text i was still looking on the post
- 4:25i was looking on the post my god i forgot um
- 4:28so we got we made a post a bit ago on uh the
- 4:34socials about like these haunted tunnels we investigated
- 4:37um a few years ago in ipsilanti michigan and
- 4:41we got a comment um Yeah, it kind of resonated
- 4:44with me. Probably because Angela is showing me
- 4:46the show. It's kind of like an indie show. Not
- 4:50a lot of people have seen it, I don't think.
- 4:51It has like a cult following. It's called Stranger
- 4:54Things. But she's showing, apparently there's
- 4:58a few seasons. And then they, apparently there's
- 5:03like a secret ninth episode of the final season
- 5:07coming out soon. But. She's showing me that show
- 5:13to gear up for this amazing finale she said that
- 5:16they had. I didn't even finish it. It sucked
- 5:19so bad. I'm kidding. It's a joke. I don't care
- 5:23if people judge me for saying it. Season 5 of
- 5:26Stranger Things fucking sucks. First three seasons
- 5:29were good. Anyone who thinks it is good has something
- 5:33seriously wrong in their brain. I mean, season
- 5:384 is when they turn into like... Marvel, like
- 5:43Avengers. I'm like, what's happening? What happened
- 5:45to the show? Yeah, they're trying to be too hard
- 5:47with trying to make it a superhero thing. Bring
- 5:52it back to season one and two type of vibes.
- 5:55Bree, have you seen this show? Yeah, I haven't
- 5:59seen the newest season, but it sounds like I
- 6:03probably shouldn't. This makes me sad. The show
- 6:08has a lot to do with Dungeons and Dragons, which
- 6:11of the three of us, Bree is about to be real
- 6:15modest and say, she doesn't really play. She's
- 6:19not an expert. She doesn't really know too much
- 6:22about it, but she is part of a, what do they
- 6:24call it? When you play, it's not like a series
- 6:30of games. It's like you're part of a thing, right?
- 6:34I thought you were going to call her a nerd.
- 6:37Well, she is a nerd. She's on a Dungeons and
- 6:40Dragons league. That's still better than all
- 6:42the rest of us. It's called a campaign. A campaign,
- 6:47that's the word. So you started a new campaign
- 6:50recently. Yes. Wait, before you start, Brianna,
- 6:53I didn't mean that in a bad way. I meant it in
- 6:56a nice way. I think nerds are like... I'm so
- 6:58offended you called me a nerd. I think nerds
- 7:01are the most amazing people in the world. I'm
- 7:05jealous. would be in this situation if i wasn't
- 7:09a nerd you're a filming nerd ben well we're all
- 7:12our own nerds i nerd out on cameras but there
- 7:16are some people monsters i'm just saying that
- 7:19people who have like no interest and aren't nerdy
- 7:22about a certain topic and like not nerdy about
- 7:24anything those are like the boring people sorry
- 7:28but no i am not an expert on dnd No, no. At all.
- 7:34No. I only know through, like, this Stranger
- 7:38Things show, and then also we all have our personal
- 7:42weird connection. We started paranormal investigating
- 7:46at Michigan State University, which was at, like,
- 7:50the core of the satanic panic that rippled throughout
- 7:54the United States, throughout the 80s, and D
- 7:57&D. was blamed for a lot of uh you know kids
- 8:03going down bad paths and if you play dnd you're
- 8:06summoning satan that game is demonic yeah and
- 8:10that's what i love to think about is that if
- 8:12we were alive in the 80s we'd be um viewed as
- 8:17satanists right now we still are by some people
- 8:20that's true but i mean like from the majority
- 8:23of the population know how many people on tiktok
- 8:26say like comments saying we're going to hell
- 8:28and stuff oh yeah oh 100 my laptop is about to
- 8:32die so i shall disappear for one second okay
- 8:34um no one of the biggest things was when we were
- 8:39at msu was the steam tunnels um were heavily
- 8:44like locked up and people weren't allowed down
- 8:47in them because some kids back in the day were
- 8:52playing like dnd like in doing actual like role
- 8:56play dnd and not like sitting at a table dnd
- 8:59and died in the steam tunnels um well not even
- 9:03that's part of the rumor mill that that's part
- 9:06of the rumor mill yeah there's all these crazy
- 9:08legends what really happened was like one of
- 9:10the dnd like game masters um He like was down
- 9:14in the tunnels and he kind of got lost and it
- 9:17turned out to be like a failed suicide attempt.
- 9:19And he ended up actually, you know, committing
- 9:23suicide a year later or so. But then the news
- 9:26caught on and then the tunnels are very dangerous.
- 9:29So people just go down the tunnels thinking there's
- 9:32all these monsters down there. And then all these
- 9:34crazy legends, paranormal stories, because what
- 9:38they were doing was. summoning satan and all
- 9:42this crazy all it gets really messy and really
- 9:45weird and we're giving like a five second overview
- 9:47of like a story with a shit ton of nuance but
- 9:50still the point is that that incident in the
- 9:52steam tunnels at msu had a ripple effect nationwide
- 9:56and kind of in some parts launched if not the
- 10:01satanic panic as we know it now which was just
- 10:04all the fear -mongering and blaming everything,
- 10:07essentially scapegoating things like D &D as
- 10:09being gateways to satanic worship. Yeah. Hell
- 10:17yeah. And we used to run at MSU, which is kind
- 10:21of where we're going. We used to run haunted
- 10:23tours, and they were very receptive of this.
- 10:27It brought a lot of people to campus. The only
- 10:29rule was we couldn't mention the steam tunnels.
- 10:34Yeah. You couldn't even mention them. You're
- 10:37still very weird about it. Very touchy about
- 10:40it. Yeah. Very interesting. So how does it feel
- 10:45for you, Bree, playing the game now? Like, you
- 10:51know the history. You are in this space as a
- 10:54paranormal investigator. Do you feel like...
- 10:57Is it anywhere close to being satanic? No. How
- 11:04does it feel known to history, though? I don't
- 11:09understand how it got, like, how people associated
- 11:15Satanism with D &D. Like, at all. Like, it's
- 11:23mind -boggling because it's like... they're not
- 11:32there's like yeah you can have like creepy monsters
- 11:35and stuff and like magic and like i don't know
- 11:40on occasion necromancy but i don't even think
- 11:43necromancy became part of dnd until like the
- 11:46early 2000s that doesn't matter but like i have
- 11:51it they're so far apart i don't understand where
- 11:55the line crossed that Satanic panic was like
- 12:01made D &D seem like the worst thing ever. Well,
- 12:08I also think that it's a misunderstanding. And
- 12:15I don't know what it was like in the 80s because
- 12:18obviously we weren't alive. But like nowadays,
- 12:21Satanists, they don't... they don't even really
- 12:27worship the devil. They don't worship Satan.
- 12:30They're all about worshiping themselves and being
- 12:33a good person and doing good for others and helping
- 12:36others. They're not, they don't even really,
- 12:39that's what they believe in. You know, I don't
- 12:41even believe in God. Well, I think I'm, I'm,
- 12:45yeah, I can't say this. It's all necessarily
- 12:48true for all Satanist. And. But there's another
- 12:54word for people who actually do worship the actual
- 13:00devil, like the devil on Satan himself. That's
- 13:05a whole different word. I don't know what it
- 13:07is off the top of my head. Yeah, it's different.
- 13:09That's a big misunderstanding that a lot of people
- 13:12don't understand. And it's just like... I think
- 13:17the whole thing comes from misunderstanding.
- 13:19Oh, 100%. Because even, I mean, nowadays... you
- 13:22can go to like any library or uh pardon the term
- 13:27nerd stores you know that have magic the gallery
- 13:31and dnd gaming stores yeah yeah yeah um every
- 13:36night you know they're advertised but like in
- 13:39the 80s like you didn't you couldn't just walk
- 13:41in a store and like dnd was like plastered so
- 13:44you went to places like tunnels or like away
- 13:46from people and then anytime something happened
- 13:50that was a little off or bad you know because
- 13:54accidents happen it's like all those weird kids
- 13:57doing something secretive acting out these creatures
- 14:03yeah chasing things in the tunnels that aren't
- 14:06really there that's not what dnd is but from
- 14:09an outsider add in the tunnel element you can
- 14:14kind of see where a lot of misunderstandings
- 14:17can, you know, spiral and domino effect. Yeah.
- 14:21What I think is that there are, there's always
- 14:25like extremists with anything, you know? And
- 14:31when I think of the satanic panic, I think it's
- 14:35of mostly Christians who were freaking out mostly
- 14:40about it. I don't know. No, really? Well, I don't
- 14:45know. The other religions, did they freak out
- 14:49and think that D &D was bad and evil too? It's
- 14:54inherently religious because it's freaking out
- 14:57about the devil. Yeah. I mean, it's the age of
- 15:02also at the same time, stranger danger. That
- 15:05was a thing that was rising at the same time,
- 15:09the whole stranger danger stuff. So it's like
- 15:11people... needed something to scapegoat you know
- 15:15what i'm saying is that there's extremists to
- 15:18everyone and that there's some people who believe
- 15:22like i'm not gonna say any names but i knew someone
- 15:26who used to be my violin teacher and i know she's
- 15:31still like this to this day love her bless her
- 15:34heart but and i remember but i remember one day
- 15:37she was like so what do you do in school and
- 15:39i was like oh we took a school field trip to
- 15:41the uh to the movies and everyone got to see
- 15:46the eyes and great and powerful and she was like
- 15:50oh no no i don't i don't do that i wouldn't allow
- 15:52my kids to see that that's evil that includes
- 15:55wizards and magic that's not christian like or
- 15:58something along that line and it's just like
- 16:03okay yeah i don't know like that seems very dramatic
- 16:08personally like i think there were even new people
- 16:11who were like like that with like harry potter
- 16:15yeah yeah like wouldn't even let their kids read
- 16:17the books or watch the movies and yeah and but
- 16:22it's just like it's because of i don't know misunderstanding
- 16:25and misrepresentation like they saw one bad thing
- 16:29Like specifically with D &D, they saw like one
- 16:32bad thing or one bad thing happen. And, oh, there's
- 16:35magic. And, oh, there's wizards. And, oh, there
- 16:39can be demons or whatever. And it's like, oh,
- 16:43this is Satanism. It's encouraging my children
- 16:55to use magic. uh wicked ways it's like no yeah
- 17:00so like what what i'm wondering is then during
- 17:04the like the 80s or the satanic panic it's like
- 17:06were people just like all were every like a lot
- 17:12of people just dramatic that way it was did everyone
- 17:15have that mindset did everyone believe that way
- 17:18or like was there something more to it you know
- 17:23what i mean I mean, even just like the other
- 17:28day, kind of taking a step away from the satanic
- 17:32panic and more towards the D &D and not understanding
- 17:35it. Our session last week was five, almost six
- 17:42hours long. It's like half a game of Monopoly.
- 17:45That's a Monopoly game. The next day, my mom
- 17:50was like, I just don't understand how you guys
- 17:52can play something like that so long. I just
- 17:54don't understand the game. And it's like, well,
- 17:58she's like, is there a goal? Is there something
- 18:01that's set for you guys to do? It's like, no.
- 18:04It's a game that you're put into. You create
- 18:09your character. You create a backstory for it.
- 18:12And you're put into a scenario. It's anyone's
- 18:18game from there. You can take it in any direction
- 18:20you want. It's 100 % roleplay -based. Your DM
- 18:27could have a goal for you guys, but that doesn't
- 18:30mean that you make that your goal. You can completely
- 18:33sidetrack and go a different way, and the DM
- 18:35will adapt and create a different storyline to
- 18:38go off of. And she's like, oh. And I'm like,
- 18:42think about it as like... uh think of it as improv
- 18:48yeah with a game i yeah i think i understand
- 18:55so you to summarize you just said that in dungeons
- 18:58and dragons you can have a storyline that's going
- 19:02one way and it can be going that way the whole
- 19:06time then all of a sudden you can just change
- 19:08it on a whim Yeah. Like Stranger Things. That's
- 19:14what happened to season five. Everyone's trying
- 19:18to blame the writers that they lost the plot.
- 19:20And the show has no resemblance to the original
- 19:22season. But maybe it's one big game of Dungeons
- 19:25and Dragons. And maybe the Game Masters can do
- 19:29whatever the hell they want. Well, it's not even
- 19:32the... I came up with it. It's not even the DM
- 19:36saying that they're changing the game. It's usually
- 19:40the players who change the game. They take it
- 19:43in a different direction than the DM anticipated.
- 19:46I see, I see. It's been going on a decade. The
- 19:49actors are 10 years older. Maybe they didn't
- 19:51want to play the same characters. It's so fair.
- 19:55Imagine a 10 -year game of Dungeons & Dragons.
- 19:58Yeah. Is it possible? Is there ever an ending?
- 20:04Usually, like, the DMs will have a goal at some
- 20:09point, like, for you to complete and finish the
- 20:12game. But, like, campaigns can go on for years.
- 20:16Like, there's never, there doesn't always have
- 20:20to be a set goal. And like I said, like, players
- 20:23and the DM can keep shifting that end post. Like,
- 20:30it's... It can change constantly. Man, this sounds
- 20:37fun. And I kind of want to try. Brianna, can
- 20:41we start a campaign with you next time you're
- 20:43here? Can we play D &D with you? Can you show
- 20:46us the ropes, the intros to it? It's not that
- 20:49simple. Come on. Maybe. Maybe one day. One day.
- 20:58She doesn't want you in her secret club. I want
- 21:01to start now. It's not my game. That's fair.
- 21:05I am the new person in this group. Do they listen
- 21:12to the podcast? No. Maybe that's a good thing.
- 21:19Does any of the scenarios that might happen talk
- 21:22about paranormal lens? No. Can you make a scenario
- 21:28all about paranormal ends in D &D? I mean, you
- 21:34could. The thing with D &D, too, is it doesn't
- 21:39have to be medieval. It can take place modern.
- 21:43It can take place in the future. It's not always
- 21:48medieval renaissance -based. gameplay. It could
- 21:53be. You could make a paranormal lens campaign.
- 21:58Just in cheese layers? With cheese layers and
- 22:02groundhogs. Oops. I stopped it, guys. What? Sorry.
- 22:13I stopped the recording by accident. I was trying
- 22:16to find a fucking comment. We still haven't even
- 22:18said what this comment was. I was trying to pull
- 22:20it up, but I stopped the whole recording. Oh
- 22:22my gosh. Okay. Maybe that was a sign from the
- 22:29heavens. So now that we established that for
- 22:34anyone that forgot from 20 fucking minutes ago,
- 22:36we made a post on Facebook about tunnels. And
- 22:39then, you know, we set up some of our own histories
- 22:44with D &D. And then... We got a comment that
- 22:49says, quote, Now, I want to go play D &D down
- 22:55there in the tunnels. The joy of fantasy probably
- 22:58helps any spirits wandering. And I thought that
- 23:03was an interesting sentiment I never thought
- 23:06of before. It sounds very heartwarming, honestly.
- 23:09Like, I got really happy thinking about them
- 23:12saying that. Go ahead, go ahead. i was gonna
- 23:16say just think about like you know all the old
- 23:19castles or like ruins and stuff and like people
- 23:21dressing up and like taking pictures there it's
- 23:24like oh i bet i wonder if there's any ghosts
- 23:26there if they're like oh that's that's so cute
- 23:29or that's so pretty or things i mean there are
- 23:36It's true that a lot of these, I never thought
- 23:38of it before, but all the spots back in the day
- 23:40that people would play D &D, like the off -the
- 23:43-beaten -path hangout spots of the day, even
- 23:45if they weren't playing D &D. How many times
- 23:47do we investigate somewhere and be like, I used
- 23:49to party back there. I used to go drinking out
- 23:51there. These spots that people gravitated to
- 23:54to party, to get away from society, to play D
- 23:57&D, those are now the haunted spots of our generation.
- 24:01So true. Not always, but... Not always, but it
- 24:06tends to be a trend. Do you think, too, it's
- 24:09like just the act of playing games and the act
- 24:12of... Because how many times do we investigate
- 24:15and things happen when we're not even talking
- 24:17to them? It's just when we're making jokes, we're
- 24:20having fun. Do you know what? I'm... but this
- 24:23reminds me of ben during your 25th birthday at
- 24:26simpson hospital remember when we were playing
- 24:28jenga and we were having like a good old jolly
- 24:32time and we just had the cap all set up around
- 24:34us and with the lights off like surrounding us
- 24:37so we can see if they went off and every single
- 24:39time one of us was freaking out or the tiler
- 24:42tipped out tipped over it was about to tip over
- 24:45the cat falls around us we're going off with
- 24:48us yeah like they were getting excited when we
- 24:51were getting excited it was like it wasn't even
- 24:54like when you pulled and all tips over you know
- 24:56because like you're like oh it just struck the
- 24:58cat ball no it was as we're getting like you're
- 25:00gonna tip it you're gonna tip it like that pretty
- 25:02full like our excitement seemed to feed it and
- 25:05to reiterate again to the listeners we every
- 25:08time we go to a haunted place we have this uh
- 25:11game of jenga it's like color jenga each tile
- 25:14is like a different color and we assign before
- 25:16we play each color a different room of the location
- 25:19we're investigating and when things kind of quiet
- 25:21down or we need a brain break we go play jenga
- 25:24and then the loser has to go do a solo in the
- 25:28room that they like if if orange is the creepy
- 25:32attic And they lose pulling in orange. You gotta
- 25:36go do a solo up there. So that's like our thing.
- 25:38That's our game. Is this haunted Jenga. Is haunted
- 25:43Jenga. Do you think that is good for the spirits?
- 25:46Do you think just playing games. Be it Dungeons
- 25:48and Dragons. Anything that's fun. Anything that's
- 25:51gaming. I think anything that brings energy.
- 25:54Or good energy into an environment. Is good.
- 26:00I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing.
- 26:03yeah yeah if it if it was like something really
- 26:08bad and traumatic happened there there's gonna
- 26:10have like there's always gonna be that feeling
- 26:13of sorrow in there to an extent you know and
- 26:18it's like i and i feel like the more people go
- 26:22in there happy with excitement and it can change
- 26:26that energy a little bit it can change that feeling
- 26:29it can heal it a little bit it can heal it a
- 26:31little bit Oh shit, we didn't even cut to the
- 26:37intro yet. Welcome to our podcast, where we take
- 26:42deep dives looking at various topics through
- 26:44a paranormal lens. Okay, now that we came back
- 26:49from the intro, any final thoughts on this? I
- 26:52thought this was a great episode. Thank you.
- 27:08That was the best bit we've ever done. The whole
- 27:11episode was the intro and then the episode is
- 27:14just the outro. I'm crying. I don't cry. I have
- 27:23man eyes. Yeah, you have man eyes. They don't
- 27:28have emotions. That's the takeaway? That's the
- 27:35final thoughts. Men don't have emotion. I didn't
- 27:44realize we were still recording. So, that was
- 27:48a fun episode. I feel like this captured the
- 27:50energy of what we were trying to say, which is
- 27:52playing games in haunted places is fun. And this
- 27:56was fun. Not everything can be serious all the
- 27:58time, right? I feel like there's a lot of craziness
- 28:02going on in the world, in paranormal world, world
- 28:07at large, all that. So let's have some fun sometimes.
- 28:10Bring Jenga. I'm curious, anyone listening, what
- 28:14games do you play in haunted locations? Do you
- 28:16play games? Do you have a go -to game? Maybe
- 28:19we can all play games together sometimes. Maybe
- 28:22that's the takeaway. We should all just play
- 28:24more games, have more fun, live a little. On
- 28:27that note, is that good? We like that ending.
- 28:30Yep, that's a better ending than men don't show
- 28:34emotion. Thanks for listening to this week's
- 28:39episode of Paranormal Lens. If you liked what
- 28:41you heard, every five -star rating and positive
- 28:43review tells the algorithms we're a worthy podcast
