- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Italian with Fexingo. I am Lucas. Luna: And I am Luna. It is episode two hundred thirty. Lucas: We are back. Last time we were looking at the night sky and talking about stars. Luna: Yes. And before that, it was all about our warm coats and boots. Lucas: Right. We covered gloves, scarves, hats. Very cozy stuff. Luna: But today feels different outside. The window is foggy. Lucas: It is. So let us look out that imaginary window. What do you see? Luna: I see gray clouds. And water falling from the sky. Lucas: Exactly. In English, we say 'it is raining'. But in Italian, we focus on the action itself. Luna: The action? Okay. Let me guess. Is it 'io piango'? Lucas: No no. That means 'I am crying'. You would be very sad if you said that. Luna: Oh no. Stop it. I do not want to cry. So what is the word? Lucas: It is 'piove'. Just one word. Listen closely. Lucas: Piove. Luna: Piove. Lucas: Good. It comes from the verb piovere. But we never use 'I' or 'you'. We just say 'piove'. Luna: Piove. Like a state of being. The rain exists. Lucas: Exactly. 'Piove' means 'it rains' or 'it is raining'. Repeat after me. Lucas: Piove. Luna: Piove. Lucas: Perfect. Now imagine you are standing there. The rain starts harder. Luna: Oh no. My hair will get wet. What else is happening? Lucas: You feel the air moving against your face. Strong gusts. Luna: Wind. Yes. How do we say 'there is wind'? Lucas: We use 'c'è'. It means 'there is'. So 'c'è il vento'. Luna: C'è il vento. Let me try. Luna: C'è il vento. Lucas: Very good. 'Vento' is masculine. So we say 'il vento'. Try it again. Lucas: C'è il vento. Luna: C'è il vento. Lucas: Nice. You can combine them. If it is rainy and windy, you can list them. Luna: So... Piove. E c'è il vento. Lucas: Yes. 'It is raining. And there is wind.' Simple and clear. Luna: Okay. So now I am wet. And my ears are freezing. Lucas: This brings us to another important concept. Feeling cold. Luna: I know this one. From last week. 'Fa freddo'. Lucas: Correct. 'Fa freddo' describes the weather. The environment is cold. Luna: Fa freddo. Outside, by the window. It is definitely fa freddo. Lucas: Yes. But notice the difference when YOU feel it. Luna: Wait. Do I say 'io ho freddo'? Lucas: Spot on. 'Ho freddo'. Literally 'I have cold'. You possess the cold. Luna: Oof. I really have cold right now. My fingers are stiff. Lucas: So you can say: 'Fa freddo. Ho freddo.' Two different subjects. Luna: The weather is cold. I have cold. Got it. Lucas: Let's practice the full sequence. Start with the weather. Lucas: Fa freddo. Luna: Fa freddo. Lucas: Now add yourself. Lucas: Ho freddo. Luna: Ho freddo. Lucas: Great. Now, practical problem. You are outside. It is raining. You need protection. Luna: An umbrella. Of course. How do I say 'I take an umbrella'? Lucas: The verb is 'prendere'. To take or grab. So 'prendo un ombrello'. Luna: Prendo un ombrello. Ombrello. Sounds fancy. Lucas: It does. Listen to the rhythm. Prendo un ombrello. Luna: Prendo un ombrello. Lucas: Try it faster. Like you are running to catch it. Lucas: Prendo un ombrello. Luna: Prendo un ombrello. Lucas: Perfect. You are prepared. Let's put it all in a tiny scene. Luna: Okay. I am looking out the window. What do I say first? Lucas: Describe the sky. Remember 'piove'? Luna: Piove. It is raining. Lucas: Good. Now add the wind. Luna: E c'è il vento. And there is wind. Lucas: And how does it feel? Luna: Fa freddo. E ho freddo. Lucas: Excellent. Now, action. What do you do? Luna: Prendo un ombrello. I grab an umbrella. Lucas: You nailed it. Let's review those five key phrases one more time. Lucas: First: Piovе. Luna: Piove. Lucas: Second: C'è il vento. Luna: C'è il vento. Lucas: Third: Fa freddo. Luna: Fa freddo. Lucas: Fourth: Ho freddo. Luna: Ho freddo. Lucas: Fifth: Prendo un ombrello. Luna: Prendo un ombrello. Lucas: You are doing wonderfully. These phrases will keep you grounded when the weather turns. Luna: I feel much safer knowing I can describe the storm properly. Lucas: That is the goal.
