- 0:00Hi everybody, welcome to another brand new episode of Did that
- 0:02Age. Well, we are in our month of
- 0:05Disney Channel original movies AKA Dcom and I'm so excited
- 0:09today to talk about High School Musical with my friend Becca.
- 0:12But first, I want to give a shout out to Spider Moving and
- 0:14Storage, sponsor of this podcast and of dude IDK studios or we're
- 0:18recording today. If you're getting ready to move,

- 0:25free quote and give them a follow on Instagram at
- 0:28spidermoving and Storage. You won't be sorry.
- 0:32Now today, Oh my God, I couldn't be more excited to have my
- 0:38beautiful, fabulous, smart, hard working, gorgeous friend.
- 0:43All the adjectives. Every adjective you can think of
- 0:46that's good, it's you. You're so.
- 0:49Nice, I love you. Oh my God, thank you for having
- 0:52me. I'm so happy to be here.
- 0:53So happy you're here today. I am outfitted once again by
- 0:57Becca. I know you guys have heard me
- 0:58say that the past few weeks, and I'm not going to stop saying it
- 1:01because every week for the next maybe 12 weeks I'll be outfitted
- 1:05by Becca. I did go a little hard you.
- 1:07And God bless you for that. I did the a new edit with Becca.
- 1:14Actually, first, do you want to just tell who are you?
- 1:17Good question. I ask myself that every day.
- 1:20Every morning we wake up, we look in the mirror and say, how
- 1:22are you? So my name is Becca, I live here
- 1:27in Denver. I own a new collective which is
- 1:30a plus size thrift shop exclusively sizes large to 6X
- 1:35and U when I can find it. I currently am running
- 1:39everything out of my house but I do pop ups which me and big fat
- 1:42mood are planning to do the fat and fresh again yay.
- 1:45So I'm really excited for that come spring time.
- 1:47We need a good spring. I'm feeling springy today.
- 1:50Yeah, I am too. I mean, God, it's like it's
- 1:53T-shirt weather day. Oh my God, it really is.
- 1:56But yeah, so I do most of my work on Instagram, but I also do
- 2:00Whatnot shows every Wednesday. Whatnot is like very up and
- 2:03coming. Have you heard?
- 2:04Like it's. Just, I mean, I, I feel like I,
- 2:07I know about it mostly from you. Like, I think I had heard about
- 2:10it before you, but now it's like, you know, now.
- 2:14Now I'm more familiar. It's like the shopping site, but
- 2:17I think it's because it's so easy and addictive, which is
- 2:20scary. But anyways, so every Monday and
- 2:22Friday I do drops on Instagram and that is done by story sales.
- 2:27So I post like a picture of the item.
- 2:30I talk about the brand, the fabric, the measurements.
- 2:32Because shopping online can be hard, Totally.
- 2:36And then it's first come first serve, just kind of like
- 2:38shopping online. But I do the work for you.
- 2:41So I find the best of the best items at the thrift stores
- 2:44providing all of the second hand goodness.
- 2:46Yes, brands like Free People and Airy and American Eagle, all
- 2:50that jazz. And then Ioffer shipping
- 2:54anywhere in the USI offer open bags, which is like a system
- 2:58because I do drop so frequently. An open bag is you just leave it
- 3:02with me for up to two weeks and then you ship all at once.
- 3:05So imagine shopping your favorite brand and then being
- 3:08able to shop at or like ship it at once and then you save money
- 3:11on shipping. Incredible.
- 3:12I love that for me and I love that for and I love that for me
- 3:16as well as a customer. I love that for.
- 3:18Yes, of course. And then also ioffer local
- 3:21pickup for any Denver locals. And then every Wednesday, so I
- 3:25started getting customers saying like, Oh my gosh, you've
- 3:28revamped my wardrobe. I don't know what to do with all
- 3:31my old pieces. So now I take donations for my
- 3:33customers and then I in return to them donating to me, I give
- 3:39them a small shop credit to shop my drops.
- 3:43And then I run their donations starting at a dollar every
- 3:46Wednesday on Whatnot. And I know that people are like,
- 3:50why would you only do a dollar? But I like to pride myself on
- 3:53being affordable and accessible for bigger bodies because I
- 3:57don't know about you, but have you ever, like, walked into a
- 3:59store that does carry plus sizes?
- 4:00Oh, my God. And they charge the fat tax.
- 4:02Yeah. And so you're paying, like,
- 4:04$50.00 for a shirt. And that is just in this
- 4:07economy, girl. No, thank you.
- 4:09Yeah, what am I weighing? Money.
- 4:11So instead of charging a lot of money like Goodwill because they
- 4:16get it for free. Yeah, I rent it at a dollar.
- 4:20And So what not is like a bidding type of situation.
- 4:24So it starts at a dollar, It might sell for a dollar.
- 4:26I've sold Lululemon for a dollar, free people for a dollar
- 4:29and that's fine. But you can bid on it.
- 4:32So you get an opportunity to bid and then it ships to you.
- 4:37And I'll just like being able to provide affordable clothing to
- 4:41people. And it's just really nice.
- 4:44And it's such a community. Like it's gotten to the point
- 4:46where it's like Facetiming your girlies.
- 4:49Yes. And it is a live stream.
- 4:51So it's super fun. We just get together every
- 4:53Wednesday. And I do like little giveaways
- 4:56and kind of point people towards my Instagram.
- 4:58But it's super fun. And I look, it's like one of my
- 5:01favorite days of the week. Have you watched any yet?
- 5:03I have no worries if you haven't, I haven't yet.
- 5:05Super fun. I know.
- 5:06I really, I really want to. I feel like right now I'm like,
- 5:08Oh my God, I have so many clothes, but that's solid.
- 5:11But also I am so excited to see like I want to see the whole
- 5:16process. I want to come and like hang
- 5:17out. Yeah, even if you just watch
- 5:19like it's so fun and engaging. And then of course, my last
- 5:23service, which you just mentioned the a new edit is it
- 5:28was actually born from the question of being like, Oh my
- 5:31gosh, I would love for you to shop for me personally.
- 5:34And I was like, well, maybe I can.
- 5:36So it is essentially me being your personal shopper, your
- 5:40personal stylist. So I have like a flat fee to
- 5:44start and with that fee you get a 30 minute either zoom call or
- 5:48in person. So if you need help with me like
- 5:50styling the items that I got for you, I'm happy to help you
- 5:53because I don't want to be like here's your clothes.
- 5:55And then you're like, what do I do with this?
- 5:56Totally. So I always like to be able to
- 5:59help you move forward with the clothes.
- 6:02And then you get to kind of pick like your budget needs.
- 6:05So I understand that it could be expensive, but you also do end
- 6:08up saving money with my service. But you get to pick your budget
- 6:12needs and it comes with, you know, X amount of items.
- 6:15And then I get to shop specifically for you.
- 6:18You fill out a long form of like your measurements so I know how
- 6:21to shop for you. And then the most important key,
- 6:24your Pinterest board. Yours was glorious.
- 6:26Oh my gosh, thank. You all the pastels, all the
- 6:30What was your? My color season, Yes, yes, my
- 6:35color season is light summer. Light summer.
- 6:37OK, so it was like lots of pinks.
- 6:39And although this didn't match it, you did love a good gingham,
- 6:42a good checker. Yeah.
- 6:43So I threw that in there. That was like the only thing
- 6:45that wasn't your color season. Yeah, it is it.
- 6:48That's exactly right. This is the only thing that I
- 6:50think was, I mean, it did match my Pinterest board.
- 6:53You really. There were some things, there
- 6:55were some items that you were like, okay, this literally
- 6:57looked exactly like something from the Pinterest board.
- 6:59You're like I basically. I think I just kind of like.
- 7:01Yeah, I know. It was so perfect.
- 7:03Truly, like, I mean, even though the form was long and you got a
- 7:07lot of information, it was so easy for me to fill out.
- 7:10I was able to use that guide that you gave me for like
- 7:14getting your measurements, you know, because sometimes it's
- 7:16like, I don't know. Yeah, well, that's something
- 7:19that is also important to me. On my page, I have a measurement
- 7:23guide on how to measure yourself because while you may say you
- 7:26know, I'm a 1416, not every brand runs like a 1416 or like
- 7:31it just may be completely different.
- 7:33So it's really important. I always say never go by the
- 7:36tag, always go by measurement. Yes, because sizing is a joke.
- 7:41It is such a joke. It's truly just like vibes.
- 7:44They're like, I don't know, I guess this is a large today.
- 7:48I know there's something in my closet that is a free people
- 7:50small. I'm like, do I look like a small
- 7:52to you? Thank you.
- 7:54So you think I'm? So you so you think I'm a little
- 7:56girl? So you think I'm baby?
- 7:59Yeah, exactly. Yeah.
- 8:01So I always say go by measurement, don't go by the tag
- 8:03size. Yeah.
- 8:03And I'm glad that helped you. And especially like with
- 8:07shopping online and because I have like a no return policy,
- 8:11it's important for me to be able to provide.
- 8:12OK, I know the the pit to pit measurement is this so I know
- 8:16it'll fit me. That's another thing that I
- 8:18don't talk about enough is while I don't accept returns or
- 8:21exchanges, I do have a group chat on anew like my Instagram.
- 8:27It's called the anew Crew rehome.
- 8:30And usually when I do my drops I have like 10 people claiming the
- 8:34same item. So while it may go to one
- 8:36person, you can repost it in the rehome for free, whatever
- 8:40pricing you want. Most people like ask for the
- 8:43money back, but they'll cover shipping or whatever.
- 8:45But you can rehome it in this group and I would say like 9 out
- 8:48of 10 times people buy it. Yeah.
- 8:50So like, you may not get an exchange or return, but someone
- 8:54else is gonna buy it and you'll get your money back.
- 8:55Exactly. Yeah, so.
- 8:56I try to do what I can and then you have.
- 8:58To pay it forward to the community.
- 9:00Yes, yes. Yes, and like I've every time
- 9:02I've seen someone post in that group, they're like Oh my God, I
- 9:05love this piece so much. I'm so sad to say goodbye.
- 9:07Yes, but like, I just wanted to go to a good home.
- 9:10And we always talk about the items like they're people total.
- 9:14They're like, she was so gorgeous.
- 9:16My mom was always like, who are you talking about?
- 9:18Like the items are people. Clothes, they are feelings they
- 9:21do love and and they love us and we love them yes I was so I was
- 9:26so impressed by how many of the items that in my edit were new
- 9:29with tags yes like incredible some brands that like if I would
- 9:34have gotten that aloe tank just like at the store would have
- 9:38been like. 60 bucks. Oh my gosh, yeah, yeah.
- 9:41There's no way like, and I can't remember what tier you ended up
- 9:45doing, but yeah, I mean, even one item probably would have
- 9:48been the amount of the full tier.
- 9:50Exactly. Like it's crazy.
- 9:51It's crazy. Yeah.
- 9:52And that's another thing is like, even though you're getting
- 9:54second hand doesn't mean that it's like very well worn or
- 9:57whatever. Like most of it is new with
- 9:58tags. People are just.
- 10:00And if you're a thrifter or you love thrifting, right now is
- 10:03your Super Bowl. So go to the thrift stores.
- 10:05It's the beginning of the year. Everyone's donating and getting
- 10:08rid of all the things. So yeah, now is the time to
- 10:10shine. That is actually.
- 10:11So funny that you say that because my friend literally is
- 10:15planning to go thrifting on the Super Bowl day.
- 10:17Like on Super Bowl Sunday. I was like, are you going to
- 10:19like watch Bad Bunny or whatever?
- 10:21She said no, I'm going thrifting.
- 10:22I said have the place to yourself, girl.
- 10:24Or stream while you're thrifting.
- 10:25I do that often too. Oh yeah, like, stream the Super
- 10:28Bowl while you're like, just like, win for win.
- 10:31Totally like that. A woman on the go.
- 10:34She's a mother. She's she's a multitasker.
- 10:37Yes, I am a mother, a wife, a business owner, all the things.
- 10:40She's everything. But let me plug my my socials.
- 10:45Just to be sure. I'm sure I will at the end too.
- 10:48But anyway. So Instagram is at shop, a new
- 10:50collective, Whatnot is just a new collective.
- 10:55And I think that's it for now. And website is coming with new
- 10:59things. Oh my God.
- 11:00How exciting. I know all.
- 11:02Right watch the space, everybody that's so exciting yay well, I I
- 11:06just have to say OK, so you and I we met on the Internet.
- 11:09We were yes, we did and like the moment that I found out about a
- 11:15new collective I was like this is home.
- 11:17This is where this this is where I will be getting my clothes.
- 11:20I love that from now. On it makes me happy.
- 11:22Well yeah, makes me happy that you are making plus size high
- 11:26quality clothes available for a reasonable price.
- 11:30It's important to me that like, because when you think plus
- 11:33size, you think like frumpy ruffles, floral, hide your body.
- 11:38And I like totally. Not only was it important to me,
- 11:41also I think it's like when you think plus size clothing, you
- 11:44think like only fast fashion. Yeah, because there's so many
- 11:48times that I've been on TikTok that are like, where are we
- 11:51shopping in? The amount of people that are
- 11:52like Sheehan? I'm like, oh, it like makes me
- 11:54want to break my like, grab my eyeballs and RIP them out.
- 11:57Yeah, because it's I get it. Like, that's the affordable
- 12:01option, but at what cost? Cost, truly.
- 12:03Yeah. Like, at what cost?
- 12:04The earth. And you're going to be buying
- 12:07more frequently because the items are horrid.
- 12:10Yeah, and it's a turn too quickly and they RIP.
- 12:14You breathe too hard and they RIP.
- 12:16You open the package and it's already disintegrated.
- 12:18Yeah, totally. You put it in the washing
- 12:19machine, you it never comes out. It's it's dissolved in there.
- 12:23It's now part of the washing machine.
- 12:25Yeah. So, yeah, it's really important
- 12:27to me. I mean like, so I have a drop to
- 12:29what's today, Friday, I have a drop tonight of basics.
- 12:33Like it's really important to me to show like layered pieces and
- 12:36this, that. And the other one of them is
- 12:38made well, which we know is a good brand, good quality, 100%
- 12:41continents of 4X. It's possible to get good
- 12:44quality, plus size, fashionable high end at an affordable price.
- 12:50So it's, it's really important to me that I'm able to provide
- 12:53that because I mean, the reason I started a new is because I
- 12:57always like would go to like farmers markets and like, just
- 13:00like little like pop up events in Denver.
- 13:03And I'd go and I'd be like, Oh my gosh, this stuff is so cute.
- 13:05And it goes up to a large right. I'm like, thank you.
- 13:10Yeah. And it always like let me down.
- 13:12And then also just like going to, for example, like thrift con
- 13:17or just like events where it has thrifted clothing.
- 13:19And then I'm, I am excited to get second hand clothing because
- 13:23that's something that I am passionate about.
- 13:25And again, goes up to an XL, right.
- 13:27Like it was really discouraging. I think the two times I went to
- 13:29thrift con, I left with T-shirts.
- 13:31Yeah. I'm like, oh, thank you.
- 13:34Thanks for the like men's T-shirt, which of course, of
- 13:37course we love like we. Love a good I love a good men's
- 13:40T-shirt, but I also want to be able to get like, something
- 13:42cute. You know, like.
- 13:43Thrifted these pants. These are my favorite.
- 13:45This is given to me secondhand, but I just want to show that
- 13:50like it is possible. It's also affordable, accessible
- 13:53like I just I'm here to provide. I will do the work for you.
- 13:57All you gotta do is buy it. Yeah, and we deserve it.
- 14:00That's the other thing do. Is that we deserve cute clothes,
- 14:03for God's sake? Yeah, please.
- 14:05That much to ask? Isn't that much to ask?
- 14:08No, absolutely not. I don't think it is.
- 14:11Well, Becca, thank you so much for taking time to share about a
- 14:15new and for and just for doing it all.
- 14:19I was saying on the podcast last week that like she's a one woman
- 14:22show and you wouldn't believe it.
- 14:23You'd think she'd have an entire army of all my Charlotte's.
- 14:26I know sometimes I'm like how do I do this?
- 14:29I don't know. But yeah, yeah, I mean, I don't
- 14:31have a choice. That she doesn't have a choice,
- 14:34that people demand it. Yeah.
- 14:37Well, OK, let's segue. Let's go, let's go.
- 14:42OK, so today we're talking about High School Musical.
- 14:44I'm excited. Can't believe it.
- 14:46So I'm curious, what made you want to discuss this movie?
- 14:52When I think about like nostalgia for me, I feel like
- 14:57High School Musical is probably one of the like OG movies,
- 15:02especially Disney Channel. If you know, you know, like I
- 15:04was born in 96 Disney Channel was that girl the the original.
- 15:09I remember like the movie coming on and it came on like late at
- 15:12night, like right before school started, like the season of
- 15:15school. And I was like, Oh my gosh, I
- 15:18have to watch like High School Musical.
- 15:20Obviously Zac Efron was a heartthrob.
- 15:22Obviously Vanessa Hudgens was just like one of those girls.
- 15:26Like I remember like listening to her music and I was just so
- 15:29excited for this movie and then the delivery of like all the
- 15:33fashion. Oh my God.
- 15:35Iconic We would not. OK, we would not have Ashley
- 15:38Tisdale wearing jeans on the red carpet without High School
- 15:41Musical. No, and like the.
- 15:42Imagine where we'd be if we didn't have that look.
- 15:44And the layering of like the camis and the asymmetrical shirt
- 15:49dress and the sequence scarves A.
- 15:53Lot of scarf hats, girl. The hats, the hats, The hats
- 15:58could have their own. Episode really.
- 16:01Literally yes. The first scene of what's his
- 16:05name? It was like Ashley Tisdale's
- 16:07brother. Ryan.
- 16:09The first scene of his hat, it was like a golf leather bright
- 16:13green. Oh my gosh.
- 16:14It was just very interesting. Yeah.
- 16:16And while I may personally have never worn that, I think that
- 16:21they definitely influenced a lot of like limited to and justice
- 16:25yes, where like I just wanted to go and get that exact outfit
- 16:29completely. I wanted to have that, like,
- 16:32flamenco dress that Ashley Tisdale has in Bob to the top.
- 16:35Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yes, I mean, I, I genuinely want
- 16:40to know like what was the budget for the clothing, right, like
- 16:44just back then? Right.
- 16:45I want to know too, because this movie was only the budget was
- 16:49only $4 million, which like for a for a made for TV movie is
- 16:53still like pretty small. They must have spent like half
- 16:56of the budget on costumes. I mean, let's be real, the
- 17:00scenes were basketball court, school cafeteria, like, so I
- 17:08feel like maybe they got like an abandoned high school and
- 17:11they're like, all right, we're not spending budget on set.
- 17:14We're spending it on outfits. Yeah, I think that that's
- 17:16probably what they did. And because like also all the
- 17:19actors of the time, like nobody knew who they were.
- 17:21Oh my gosh, I know. I was watching it last night and
- 17:24I was like, oh, bless their hearts.
- 17:26I know. Like you could tell they were
- 17:27like, like as a first, like real big movie.
- 17:32You're like, oh, they think they're killing it.
- 17:34Oh my. God.
- 17:35Which God bless, they are at the time they were in.
- 17:38Their own way, in their own Disney Channel way.
- 17:40Yeah, in the way that like. I mean, let's be real, it was
- 17:43probably like the stepping stone to their real, true careers.
- 17:46I mean, we wouldn't have Dylan Efron on the Traders if we
- 17:49didn't have Zac Efron on High School Musical.
- 17:52Zac Efron walked so Dylan could run.
- 17:56So that he could do those push ups in the B roll of the traders
- 18:00make everyone thirsty. I wonder.
- 18:03OK, so let's talk about let's talk about high school.
- 18:07What were you like in high? Like did you like fit into like
- 18:11a stereotype like these movies? Did you fit into like a neat
- 18:15little box, or were you kind of doing your own thing?
- 18:17I was definitely a lone survivor.
- 18:19Yeah. I was not as cool as I am today.
- 18:23Yeah, and thank and thank God she didn't peek in high school.
- 18:26Thank God. Yeah, everyone else peeked for
- 18:29sure. My peek is now so.
- 18:31And that's, I know that's right. I love that.
- 18:36No, I was definitely the girl who, like, ate lunch in the
- 18:39bathroom. Oh my God.
- 18:40By myself. I hung out with my teachers a
- 18:43lot because I didn't have friends.
- 18:46Yeah. And the friends I did have were
- 18:48haters on me. So yeah, it was a very sad
- 18:51story, honestly. But I did take four years of
- 18:56entrepreneurship and look at where it has led me today.
- 18:59Girl, and look at where you are. It's weird though, because like,
- 19:02I wasn't a nerd. I wasn't a popular girl.
- 19:05Yeah. I wasn't like, I don't know,
- 19:08like I I kind of just was like, by myself a lot.
- 19:11And like, I did have friends here and there, but I didn't
- 19:13have like a clique. Yeah.
- 19:15I didn't have a group. I don't know, like those years
- 19:20were so traumatic that like it's like, I don't know, I don't even
- 19:24know how I survived. But definitely shout out to one
- 19:27of my teachers. She's like with the one who
- 19:29really helped me go. I kind of just like survived to
- 19:32get through high school, but I just like I had no fashion sense
- 19:37of any sort. I wanted to be like everyone
- 19:39else. Like I remember like Sperrys
- 19:41were the thing and I really wanted Sperrys.
- 19:43I always wanted Uggs the Ed Hardy belt.
- 19:47Absolutely. Wait, can I ask you a question
- 19:49about Uggs? So when I was in high school or
- 19:52junior high in high school, my calves were like too big for
- 19:56Uggs. So I had to wear like the little
- 20:00Uggs and like the Ugg slippers. One time I got, I got called to
- 20:03the principal's office because they were like, those are
- 20:05pyjamas and you can't wear pyjamas.
- 20:07I said hello. It has a sole on the bottom.
- 20:09Stop discriminating against me because I have such.
- 20:12Strong calves? No, I had chicken legs.
- 20:16Yeah, so. But me now.
- 20:18No. Me now, absolutely not.
- 20:20Yeah, I could never. Yeah, I do have Uggs, but
- 20:22they're platforms and so they're the lowriders.
- 20:25Yeah. But back then I had like the
- 20:27tall chest, the chestnut color. I.
- 20:30Got it. The tall, tall ones like that
- 20:32was my thing. Iconic.
- 20:33Yeah. I'm so sorry for your Ugg
- 20:36crisis. Yeah, it was tough.
- 20:38It was tough because I did, you know, I was able to cut corners
- 20:41with a lot of the trends, you know, like I wore the
- 20:43Abercrombie jeans. I just tried to get them.
- 20:45Hemmed because they were You know, I.
- 20:48This won't surprise you, but I was a little shorter than my
- 20:51classmates so. I I was, I was fairly short too.
- 20:55Yeah, totally. But I was thinner back then.
- 20:58However, I was called fat a lot, of course, but as kids do, I
- 21:03was, you know, £100 soaking wet. So it's like, yeah, whatever you
- 21:09say. But I also did like the
- 21:11Hollister shirts and the Abercrombie.
- 21:14And yeah, I do miss those days, not gonna lie.
- 21:17Yeah, sometimes I miss like, OK, so you know how Abercrombie is
- 21:20like totally rebranded. They're like 100% different.
- 21:23I do kind of like, I do sort of miss the days when you'd walk
- 21:27into an Abercrombie or Hollister and be like, it's dark in here,
- 21:30where am I? Yeah, and you like can't see,
- 21:32but you could smell. Yeah.
- 21:34You can't. You know, you're rounding the
- 21:35corner in the mall and you say Hollister is coming up.
- 21:38I do remember I just found a picture of my childhood bedroom
- 21:41and I had an Abercrombie bag taped to my wall.
- 21:46Girl. Insane.
- 21:48I had in my bedroom growing up I had a wall that was all cork
- 21:53board. Yes, my entire cork board wall
- 21:57was Abercrombie, Hollister and American Eagle bags.
- 22:00Yes. Just took the bags, cut them up,
- 22:02put them on the wall. That was the thing though was
- 22:04like, hang the bag, you see the men with the ABS.
- 22:08Yeah. And I mean we all, we all wished
- 22:13wait. They were there and we were in
- 22:16our rooms. Oh God.
- 22:19So I feel like when I watch High School Musical, the thing that
- 22:22is the thing that like is confusing to me based on my
- 22:26experience is like, I don't think that people at my high
- 22:30school were put in a box extracurricularly because they
- 22:36needed to like maintain the status quo.
- 22:38It was truly the like, who has time to do more than one thing?
- 22:42Like, I mean, you, we see it in High School Musical when the
- 22:47audition and the decathlon and the basketball game are all
- 22:53going on at the same time. I'm like, that was every day in
- 22:55high school. How did anyone, how could anyone
- 22:58be in a play and play basketball?
- 23:00There's simply not enough time. I think High School Musical
- 23:04definitely gave a false depiction of high school IRL
- 23:12because to me it was like, OK, go to high school, learn, and
- 23:15then that's it. And then like, yes, there were
- 23:16the people in football. Yes, there were the people in
- 23:18basketball, but it was like it felt almost separate.
- 23:21And it wasn't like, I don't know.
- 23:24It was just definitely like, this is not it.
- 23:28High School Musical glamorized. Of course it's like.
- 23:31Of course it's like a Disney Channel washed version.
- 23:35Of course high school, it's like a caricature of high school
- 23:39because it has to be because it's a Disney Channel original
- 23:41movie. But I'm like, I don't know.
- 23:44I mean, yeah, obviously, like kids in high school can be so
- 23:47mean. They're mean to you, my queen.
- 23:49But they also, I just don't think that people in my high
- 23:54school were so wrapped up in like, you can't do this and
- 23:58this. No, it was like, well, you can't
- 24:01because literally there's no time.
- 24:04Yeah, and and it's like, at what point did these parents think it
- 24:09was OK to just put their kids into a full time job?
- 24:12Right, like hello. Where are the parents?
- 24:14Where are the parents? Because what is going on?
- 24:18Truly, I feel like the the thing that really makes High School
- 24:24Musical different from other Disney Channel original movies
- 24:28is, well, first of all, the soundtrack and its success,
- 24:31like, it went like quadruple platinum.
- 24:34It became so commercially successful.
- 24:38It became so popular. It was such a staple.
- 24:40Like, even more than Cheetah Girls, which is really saying a
- 24:42lot. Oh my God, Cheetah Girls.
- 24:44Cheetah Sisters. I'm about to watch that tonight.
- 24:46Oh my God, please do. I love that movie.
- 24:49We did it on the podcast a few years ago and I was like, I
- 24:52think I need to watch this maybe once a month to keep morale up.
- 24:56Honestly. Those girls.
- 24:58Could never be problematic. Never.
- 25:00It's a perfect movie. But I digress.
- 25:04But we digress. That's not what we're talking
- 25:05about today. But it was.
- 25:07So there was this musical episode of Even Stevens.
- 25:11You remember Even Stevens the show, of course.
- 25:13So they did a musical episode of Even Stevens and it was super
- 25:16successful. So then they were like, OK,
- 25:18we're going to do that with that.
- 25:19So Raven. And then they did that and it
- 25:21was really successful. And they were like, OK, we're
- 25:24going to do Cheetah Girls. Cheetah Girls was super
- 25:27successful. That was the first like Disney
- 25:28Channel original movie musical, yes.
- 25:31Travel to Barcelona, The girls incredible, so good.
- 25:35So then that's why they were like, OK, we definitely have to
- 25:39do another musical. Right.
- 25:41Yeah. And honestly, they nailed it.
- 25:43Because in my opinion, like when I feel like sometimes people can
- 25:47get so lost in translation that like when you have something
- 25:50good and then you try to keep it going, sometimes you either
- 25:52overdo it, you underdo it, or you just nail it.
- 25:55And that was High School Musical in this case.
- 25:57Absolutely. They nailed it and this was a
- 25:59perfect time for me. When this came out, I was in 6th
- 26:02grade, so I was like kind of, I wasn't in junior high yet, so I
- 26:07wasn't too cool for. Disney so funny that you say
- 26:10junior high. Right.
- 26:11Do you say middle school? Yes.
- 26:14Wait is I thought junior high was high school?
- 26:17No junior high for us. OK, so where I grew up,
- 26:20elementary school was kinder in the 6th grade, junior high was
- 26:247th to 9th grade, and then high school was 11:50.
- 26:27I know it was A. Weird, my mom was shaking her
- 26:29head yes too. Wait, where did you grow up?
- 26:31Fort Collins. Oh, here.
- 26:33Yeah. Because for me, elementary was K
- 26:37through 5th. OK then.
- 26:39Middle school was 6th through. 8th and then the rest was high
- 26:43school, Yes. OK, Yeah.
- 26:45But I never called it junior high.
- 26:46It was elementary middle high. Yeah, high, yeah.
- 26:49I feel like it's middle school when you include like 6th grade.
- 26:52Yeah, I don't know. I don't truly know the
- 26:55difference. But I always thought older
- 26:58people said. Junior high.
- 27:00Not that you're OK, Boomer. Not that you're not much older
- 27:03than. One year older than you.
- 27:06Oh, that's what older people's typically.
- 27:08You're like, oh, so you think I'm Yeah, wise?
- 27:12Your mom in the background with you don't even wanna see how
- 27:15disappointed she is in Becca. We're so sorry.
- 27:18So hi, Winnie. We have Winnie the Dog with us,
- 27:22of course. So anyways, I wasn't too cool
- 27:27yet for Disney Channel. By the time that High School
- 27:29Musical 2 came out, I had to kind of, I was like on that line
- 27:33where I was like, so I am gonna watch it, but I don't know if
- 27:36I'm gonna tell people I'm gonna watch it.
- 27:38You're like, did you see a High School Musical last night?
- 27:41Oh, no, Me either. No.
- 27:42Oh yeah, like. Testing the.
- 27:43Waters you're like, so High School Musical is so cheesy,
- 27:47right? And then you're like, Oh no, I
- 27:49loved it too. You gotta test those waters.
- 27:52You gotta test the waters. So I'm proud to say today that I
- 27:57when I first saw it, I did love it.
- 27:59I was like, this is everything. I thought Zac Efron was such a
- 28:02heartthrob. The songs were absolute bangers,
- 28:05the choreography iconic, the outfits iconic.
- 28:08The the way in which like it just it's almost like, I mean,
- 28:14AI could never oh, AI could never it like if you said make a
- 28:21perfect musical. Make a perfect musical.
- 28:26No AI could never like they literally could never.
- 28:29The soundtrack itself, so original, like they deserve the
- 28:34recognition that they got. I agree.
- 28:36I agree. They had Kenny Ortega directing
- 28:39and choreographing it, and he's like the guy.
- 28:42He's like the basketball. Scene.
- 28:44Girl, every time that I hear squeak on a basketball floor, I
- 28:48want to break out in a song. But also like the the path that
- 28:53it LED for almost all of the actors and actresses.
- 28:57Yeah. Like Corbin Blue.
- 28:59Yeah. Loved him.
- 29:01Didn't he do that like, one off movie on his own?
- 29:03Yeah. He did what?
- 29:04Was it called again? I can't remember what it was
- 29:05called, but he he really had his moment.
- 29:08That was my favorite. He was also a really incredible
- 29:10singer. And he's married.
- 29:13Is it he married to the girl from High School Musical, Ashley
- 29:16Tisdale? No.
- 29:18The girl who he like is paired up with at the end.
- 29:21I can't remember her. Name the girl like the smart
- 29:23girl. Yes, Oh my God, I'm almost
- 29:25positive I can't. We'll Fact Check it later.
- 29:28Don't quote me on it, but I just saw a picture of them together.
- 29:30That's a world I want to live in.
- 29:32It's a world where. They're it makes me happy when
- 29:34characters, actors and actresses in movies are like married in
- 29:39real life. Like for example, from Revenge.
- 29:41Did you ever watch Revenge? No, I never watched it.
- 29:42You have to. OK, she is like the girl, the
- 29:46main character, and then the guy that she is, like trying to get
- 29:49killed or whatever. They're married in real life and
- 29:51I love it. They've been together for like
- 29:53years. That's like my favorite thing
- 29:55ever. Oh, and the people at Disney
- 29:57Channel, they knew that when they set up.
- 29:58OK, I I'm gonna say this is alleged.
- 30:03I think that the relationship between Zac Efron and Vanessa
- 30:07Hudgens was APR relationship. But that makes me sad though.
- 30:12I know it wasn't a range, but I do believe that they.
- 30:17Wouldn't be as successful as they are now if they hadn't
- 30:21done. They're like, Oh my God, and
- 30:22we're dating. I think you're right.
- 30:24But also, but also devil's advocate, they were young.
- 30:29That's so true. They're both extremely
- 30:30attractive. Yeah.
- 30:32So maybe it was legit, but I could see where you're coming
- 30:35from. But it's, yeah, I think that
- 30:36that's an excellent point because, yeah, I mean, look at
- 30:40all of the gorgeous people in this movie.
- 30:41I'm sure that they're like, you know, we're here morning till
- 30:45night rehearsing. What else are we going to do?
- 30:48You're like. I get to fake kiss you, but then
- 30:50it turns into spark. You're like, maybe I'd be like,
- 30:56yeah. Maybe it was more.
- 30:58Than I mean come on though, who doesn't like find Zac Efron
- 31:02attractive? Truly who?
- 31:04And Vanessa, she's stunning. She's got her sneakers on.
- 31:08She's gorgeous, Vanessa. So OK, of course, Vanessa
- 31:13Hudgens has had kind of a funny career.
- 31:15And right now, I think that she's still kind of, well, at
- 31:18least the first thing that I think of when I hear Vanessa
- 31:20Hudgens is that clip that she posted right at the beginning of
- 31:24COVID where she was like, people are going to die, and that's
- 31:27inevitable. She got a lot of backlash from
- 31:29that. She really And honestly, here's
- 31:31the thing. Nobody asked Vanessa Hudgens
- 31:33what she thought about. COVID.
- 31:35They're like, oh God, COVID is here.
- 31:37Let's ask Vanessa Hudgens. Yeah, get Vanessa Hudgens on the
- 31:40line. High School Musical star Vanessa
- 31:42Hudgens. Let's find out what she thinks
- 31:44about this new virus. That's the thing.
- 31:46Sometimes, like, I do believe that celebrities with a big
- 31:50platform have a responsibility to, like, speak on their values.
- 31:54In some ways, yeah, I don't. For the most part, I'm like, you
- 31:59don't have to. Nobody asked.
- 32:01No, nobody asked Marky Mark what he would have done if he was on
- 32:07the plane during 9/11. That honestly kind of like
- 32:10brings me back though, like when COVID really when it was called
- 32:13coronavirus. Oh my God.
- 32:15That brings me to Cardi B coronavirus like like did we ask
- 32:20her what was? Going on no one said get Cardi B
- 32:23online to discuss thoughts on COVID.
- 32:26Like that just really brings me back to like March 2020.
- 32:30My God, girl, when every celebrity was going on live and
- 32:33being like, I don't know if it's a big deal.
- 32:37Wow, what a time. Vanessa Hudgens, she could have
- 32:40kept her mouth shut. But Zac Efron, of course.
- 32:43He's an A Lister now. Like he's, he's the guy, he
- 32:48became the hot guy, and he's still the hot the.
- 32:50Hot guy like neighbors. Hello.
- 32:53He's still. In everything he does, even when
- 32:56he had that like. Surgery.
- 32:58Crazy surgery. I was like, OK, he looks insane
- 33:02not. Gonna lie the AI photos.
- 33:04Caught me though. You were like.
- 33:06He jumped to be weird. Yeah, it was giving handsome
- 33:10Squidward do you know? What I'm talking about, of
- 33:13course. It was scary.
- 33:16The cheekbones were like. I know they were truly like I
- 33:21was just talking with a friend yesterday and first of all, I
- 33:23want to say like, if you get if you get plastic surgery
- 33:27listener, there's no shame. Here we are we.
- 33:29Love, bodily body autonomy. We do never say that, right?
- 33:33But you know what I'm saying? You know what?
- 33:34We love you for you. We do.
- 33:37One thing I think I will never do is get filler because of that
- 33:42AI image of Zac Efron. I'm like, but what if I got it
- 33:45got out of hand? That's valid.
- 33:47I have filler in my lips and you can't even tell.
- 33:50So I think there's an appropriate way to approach it.
- 33:52But even if you approach it non appropriately, then that's what
- 33:56you want. Yeah, totally.
- 33:57And I mean, filler can dissolve. You can dissolve it.
- 34:00It's like it is. You're gonna be fine if you got
- 34:04filler and you're like, do I look like Zac Efron?
- 34:06No, you don't. But you might.
- 34:08But you might. So that's where I'm like.
- 34:12Just don't go to his guy. Whoever his guy is, don't do it
- 34:15and don't let people put AI photos out there.
- 34:19If you if you can. If you can handle it, if you can
- 34:22avoid it. OK, so let's talk about let's
- 34:30talk about some of the most iconic parts of this film.
- 34:34I always know it's going to be good when you laugh.
- 34:36Because I'm like getting right. I'm getting ready to make myself
- 34:39laugh and make you laugh. Musical When the drama teacher
- 34:44calls the musical the musical. I think she was trying to do
- 34:47something, yeah. She was like, I'm trying to like
- 34:49start a trend, she said. Fetch is never going to happen.
- 34:51She was trying to make fetch happen.
- 34:53Yeah, she said maybe in the spring musical.
- 34:56I do love the trope of like a really over invested drama
- 35:01teacher who's like, stage is life, theatre is life.
- 35:04She's got her like Speaking of fashion, she's got her like long
- 35:08sweaters and jackets with like a brooch on everything.
- 35:10You know that she, I mean, they're living in, you know that
- 35:13she's buying turquoise every weekend.
- 35:14And brooches are trying to come back.
- 35:16I don't know. They really are.
- 35:17Yeah, thanks. But it's coming back
- 35:19differently, like filling out an entire plain tote bag of
- 35:24brooches to be like the thing, not like you're wearing it as a
- 35:27brooch, right? It's because when I think
- 35:29brooch, I think like 80 year old woman at your local church.
- 35:33Totally. We think church lady when we
- 35:35think brooch. Yeah, I think like actual, real
- 35:39granny. Yeah like I love granny core
- 35:43don't love brooches for me. Yeah totally.
- 35:45But I loved the theatre teacher in High School Musical.
- 35:50She kind of reminds me of Mia's mom on Princess Diaries.
- 35:55Yeah. Very spirited, very whimsical.
- 35:58Totally loved her. She's like art is life.
- 36:01Yes, I'm just a free thinker. But also, if you're late for a
- 36:04rehearsal, you do not respect the.
- 36:07Yes, I was. I was laughing because when I
- 36:09was watching High School Musical last night, one of the first
- 36:12scenes is like, your phone is going in the bucket and you're
- 36:15getting detention. It's like jeez, I know class
- 36:17just started. She's like she would be the
- 36:20teacher that would be on strike with the SAG actor saying no, do
- 36:26not use AII love it for the theater, for the movies, for the
- 36:31show. She would, she would be very
- 36:33anti, you know, high tech in yeah, in the theater and I love
- 36:38her. Though she's.
- 36:39Love her. Who I would aspire to be if I
- 36:42was a teacher. Me too.
- 36:43Yeah, unlike, unlike Troy's dad. Just like B Ball's life.
- 36:49Yeah, the dad is giving. Like, you're gonna outlive my
- 36:52dream. Because like, we know Zach
- 36:56wanted to, you know, sing a little.
- 36:58Totally. God forbid a man wants to sing.
- 37:00God forbid a man can read music without having ever sung before.
- 37:04Come on. That was also one of my favorite
- 37:07parts of this movie. I think the most iconic is right
- 37:10off the bat a Disney movie. Waste no time.
- 37:13We start and within 3 minutes these kids are singing.
- 37:17Yeah, they're a nightmare. Spotlight have to go.
- 37:22It's. Like I Can't Sing.
- 37:26They don't even, OK, So obviously they direct them so
- 37:29that their body language is like, oh, I don't know if I can,
- 37:31yeah. She's like reading her book at a
- 37:33party. She's like, I'm just a weird
- 37:37little freak. I'm just trying to read.
- 37:39I'm just kind of like the math girl.
- 37:42Yes. Which I of course, I love when
- 37:44they make the most conventionally gorgeous girl be
- 37:47like the nerd. A weirdo, right?
- 37:49But their voices are perfect. They aren't even quiet in the
- 37:53beginning. They're not even like, trying to
- 37:54be a little shy. They learn how to read music
- 37:58pretty much immediately when they start rehearsing with that
- 38:01girl who wears the hats. Talk about hats.
- 38:05Yes, amazing. I well, I don't think I'll ever
- 38:08be a hat girlie. I'm just a trucker hat.
- 38:09I think that's about it. Yeah, totally.
- 38:11I don't I can't get into the like berets and isn't that what
- 38:16it's called? Yeah, the beret.
- 38:18And like, there's another one that's like short and it has
- 38:21like a very small bill. Yeah.
- 38:23I just can't maybe. Is that a beret?
- 38:26That's no, it's not a beret, but it's similar.
- 38:28It's kind of a cousin to the beret, I would say.
- 38:30I just, But she rocked them and that's all that mattered.
- 38:33But of course. Being in drama, that was her
- 38:37thing. Of course.
- 38:38I mean, talk about Sharpay and Ryan and their hats.
- 38:44That's where most of the money went to.
- 38:47That honestly, $2,000,000 of the budget went to Sharpay and
- 38:51Ryan's hat because there is one thing that I noticed this watch
- 38:55around that I had never watched before like had never noticed
- 38:58before. In bop to the top at the very
- 39:00end of the song, Sharpay is climbing up the ladder.
- 39:04Ryan climbs up the ladder. He's wearing like a little
- 39:06fedora and when she says the final bop to the top, she.
- 39:11Bops him on the head. She goes bot of.
- 39:14Course she does. And I said that wouldn't be, as
- 39:17that wouldn't be possible if he wasn't wearing that kooky hat.
- 39:20Yes, I think that that was like his staple were the hats.
- 39:24Yeah. They were always outlandish,
- 39:27never made sense, and today could never.
- 39:30Could never. That's another thing that going
- 39:35back to the question of was this like, like real high school?
- 39:41Absolutely not. If you were caught wearing any
- 39:43of that, where were the skinny jeans, girl?
- 39:47I know. Not a single pair.
- 39:49Yeah. Not a single pair with skinny
- 39:51jeans and that. Yeah, they were all wearing like
- 39:54kind of boot cut jeans. With crazy shoes and almost like
- 39:59dresses with jeans. Yes, as Ashley Tisdale on the
- 40:03red carpet showed us icon, one of my favorite iconic.
- 40:07Moments, I will say that was iconic.
- 40:09Yeah, and we'll never forget. No, we'll never forget it.
- 40:13OK, more more iconic outfits, a lot of big belts.
- 40:18Yes, and not as a functional belt, just as wearing.
- 40:23Exactly. Like not through the loops, just
- 40:26as like over. Yeah, it would be completely.
- 40:29It would be like a big ass belt beyond the size of the belt
- 40:33loops, just kind of over. And then?
- 40:36Or sometimes the the waist belt. Yes, yeah, I did wear waist
- 40:40belts. Girl, I wore a waist belt like
- 40:42every day, every every time, I'd say.
- 40:44What does this outfit need? It needs a belt it.
- 40:47Needs a belt and I would. Oh my God, I belted the shit out
- 40:51of. I'm sorry.
- 40:51I belted the What the heck? It's OK.
- 40:55Thank you. Thank you.
- 40:56Yeah, I, I used to have the one that had like the three circles
- 40:59and you would put them in like this and they would go like that
- 41:02with the like with the very thick elastic.
- 41:05Yes, exactly. And it was probably like bright
- 41:07orange. Mine was.
- 41:08Mine was black functional for every.
- 41:10Outfit totally matches with everything.
- 41:13Speaking of, this is a movie of bright colors that don't go
- 41:19together, even in like a pretend world where we're like, OK,
- 41:23Like, you know, it's contrasting.
- 41:24It would be like brown, purple and green.
- 41:27OK. But to be fair, yeah, brown and
- 41:29purple and brown and pink were like iconic that.
- 41:32Oh yeah, totally. Like I think of the limited to
- 41:35monkey girl he was always with brown and pink.
- 41:38Exactly. And that was like my thing.
- 41:39I loved a good brown and pink. Oh, me too.
- 41:41But I was watching last night and there was like a baby blue
- 41:45and like a bright orange and I'm like, in what world would you
- 41:47pair these together? It just had to be as loud as
- 41:51possible. Yes, they said colors.
- 41:53We don't see them. Or we do and.
- 41:56We or we do, and we need everyone to see them.
- 42:01I'll also the the shrugs like the little like the things that
- 42:06were just like shrug Bolero, yes.
- 42:10A bolero. I just remembered that word the
- 42:12other day. That's.
- 42:14Amazing, because in my head I call everything a cardigan.
- 42:17I've learned that it's not. Boleros are coming back in.
- 42:20I have seen. I will not be partaking.
- 42:23And my arms. Are a hair too big?
- 42:25It would just look like a tissue paper.
- 42:30But I love for the people who can pull them off.
- 42:32Absolutely. We encourage, we love whatever
- 42:35they decide to do. Definitely are coming back.
- 42:36I actually just sold one. Really.
- 42:39It was from Torrid. Oh, wow.
- 42:41And it was like just a very tiny.
- 42:42It was like a nice sweater material.
- 42:44But it was definitely a bolero. Yeah.
- 42:46And I was like, how do we wear these though, right.
- 42:48Especially as a plus size person.
- 42:50Yeah. How are we pairing these?
- 42:51So if you would like to show me, please slide into my DMS.
- 42:54Yeah, truly, I would like to know.
- 42:55I want to know. And then of course we have
- 42:59Corbin Blue walking around with the basketball as an accessory,
- 43:02as one of my favorite things in teen movies is the sports person
- 43:08walking around at all times with the ball.
- 43:11Yes, yeah. For example, Secret life of
- 43:14American teenager yes, the varsity jock always carrying a.
- 43:19Football always got a football. Always.
- 43:21Yeah. And then Corbin, his basketball
- 43:24for me, it's giving high school purse for the men.
- 43:27Exactly. High school MERS.
- 43:29It's sort of like an emotional support ball, you know?
- 43:33And also like, yeah, I'm a basketball player, but you won't
- 43:36know unless I'm holding my basketball.
- 43:38Right. Truly.
- 43:38And it's sort of like, I mean, we're meant to believe that he's
- 43:41one of the star players. Like you would think people
- 43:43would know, but you never know when you're going to be
- 43:45presented with a basket that you could throw a pot to roll.
- 43:48So, you know, there is that. Oh my.
- 43:51Gosh, the team behind you, I'm screaming.
- 43:54I know, right? The headbands, the.
- 43:56Headbands. Yeah, a lot of headband and
- 43:59berets and head, you know, accessories.
- 44:02In general, yeah. Yeah, overall an insane time for
- 44:06fashion. The shirts were so.
- 44:08Long, very long, very like double layered and I don't know,
- 44:13I don't know. I'm very like sensory with
- 44:16clothing. I loathe layering.
- 44:19And it's funny because I almost wore a double shirt today and
- 44:22then I ripped it off and was like, no.
- 44:23You're like, I'm gonna be uncomfortable.
- 44:24I can't. Yeah.
- 44:26And I wonder if I have, like, trauma from layering camis.
- 44:32Yeah. Because you remember it was like
- 44:331 cami, 2 cami and then a shirt over that.
- 44:36Sometimes I I would be wearing 3 camis at a time.
- 44:41You were trying to create shapewear.
- 44:43Yeah, shapewear for teenagers. But I just like, I can't do
- 44:49that. And that's what I noticed
- 44:51consistently. So like in one of the first
- 44:53scenes, Ashley Tisdale is wearing like, what seem, I don't
- 44:59know if I call it like a tunic or a dress or both.
- 45:02But it was like it was so many layers, so much length that it
- 45:07came to like, their knees. And then a belt and a scarf and
- 45:10a hat. And it's like, are you hot?
- 45:13Are you overstimulated? Because I am watching you, Yes.
- 45:16I and they're always running around too.
- 45:18Yes, you know they're going from class to class.
- 45:21They're bopping to the top. Exactly.
- 45:24I mean and. Also the culottes like the
- 45:27gauchos. Yes.
- 45:29I would say bring them back. I actually saw a pair yesterday
- 45:33at the thrift store. They were brown.
- 45:34Oh my God. Which is like the.
- 45:36That's the color, the gaucho. Yeah, totally.
- 45:38I had mine. Mine had like a little belt that
- 45:41went along with it. My favorite?
- 45:43Pair of gauchos and the the thick 90s sandals with the
- 45:47stretchy strap. And when you walk, it's like,
- 45:50it's like very loud. Yeah, totally.
- 45:52Let the people know you're coming.
- 45:53Yeah, You know, OK, probably. To me, in a movie that is of
- 46:00course really cringe because it's a Disney Channel Original
- 46:02movie, The part that is cringiest is when Troy goes to
- 46:07Gabriella's house to apologize and he just starts singing at
- 46:10her. Could you imagine opening your
- 46:12door and just a man singing? Yeah.
- 46:15And it wasn't like like he didn't have a company.
- 46:18He wasn't like, hey, could I sing you a song?
- 46:20I wrote this song for you. I mean, he just sang the song
- 46:22that they were doing for the callback and it wasn't like, you
- 46:26know, obviously in the world of the movie, they they break out
- 46:29in song, right? It's like they go.
- 46:31It's like. Constant flash mops.
- 46:34Exactly. But this was not, this was,
- 46:36we're meant to believe. Like he showed up at her house
- 46:39and actually just started singing.
- 46:42And that, to me, was hard to watch.
- 46:44That was very hard. It was tough.
- 46:46It definitely was hard for me. I think it's like the overly
- 46:50characterized like talking. Yes, it's the Disney Channel
- 46:54style of talking where they're like Troy.
- 47:00I don't know if this is really a good idea.
- 47:04It's, yeah, it's it's like so obvious that it's like, let me
- 47:08get these kids some acting lessons.
- 47:09It's sort of like it reminds me a lot of really old movies when
- 47:13they do like the the what is it called?
- 47:16Like Mid-Atlantic accent where they're like, oh boy, I guess
- 47:19we're going to the color show. Like Disney Channel is very
- 47:23similar in that people just talk in a way that nobody would talk
- 47:28in real life. It's as though they're even on a
- 47:31stage. It's like they're like, okay,
- 47:34you better make sure to project. Yeah, it's, but they don't have
- 47:38to. But I think High School Musical,
- 47:39especially because it is a musical show.
- 47:42Yes. It was like extra, Yeah.
- 47:45It was like extra done, yeah. It's what you think of when you
- 47:49think of what are high school theater kids like.
- 47:53OK, yes, two AT yes, you nailed that.
- 47:57Yeah, and not, and I'm not just talking about Sharpay and Ren,
- 47:59I'm talking about all. Of them, all of them.
- 48:01All of them especially. Yeah, No, for sure.
- 48:04Like you. You definitely nailed that.
- 48:06Yeah, good job. Thank you.
- 48:07And they're like. But Troy, you're gonna miss the
- 48:11big game. Yeah.
- 48:12Like the first one of the first scenes of Gabriella and Troy at
- 48:17high school. She was like, I looked for you
- 48:19after and I couldn't see you. And it's like, you gotta just
- 48:22been like, hey, I missed you. Yeah, at the thing.
- 48:25But I was looking for you. OK?
- 48:29I don't know. I don't know if Ariana Grande
- 48:32was directly inspired by Vanessa Hudgens, but when Vanessa
- 48:36Hudgens was giving any line delivery in High School Musical,
- 48:40it brought me to a place of Ariana Grande as Linda in
- 48:46Wicked. I will have to admit that I have
- 48:49not seen Wicked yet. OK.
- 48:51And that's. But I've heard good things.
- 48:53But I'm also like, just not. It's a long movie, I will say
- 48:57that. I know, but I'm not.
- 48:59Isn't it like a Broadway type thing or like what's the thing
- 49:03like? Yeah, it's.
- 49:04It was originally a Broadway play.
- 49:06Yeah, and I actually know the original soundtrack.
- 49:09Yeah, from when it was stage production.
- 49:12Yes, yeah. But I haven't seen it yet.
- 49:14Yeah. Well, I'll tell you what, Ariana
- 49:17Grande kind of has this like. That's also like who she is now,
- 49:22though. It used to be so hearthy.
- 49:24And now totally. And now she became like what?
- 49:27Every time, every time you see her do anything, she goes.
- 49:34She definitely has like many personalities.
- 49:39Yeah, and she's really stuck on this one.
- 49:43I'm not sure if I like it. Yeah, I used to be a big Ariana
- 49:46Stan and not like any hate towards her, but totally.
- 49:50It's like, who are you today? And who are you, girl?
- 49:53Just just figure it out. And we hope that you do.
- 49:57Thoughts and prayers. But I really do think that,
- 50:00like, if we didn't have Vanessa Hudgens as Gabriella in High
- 50:05School Musical, would we really have Ariana Grande going?
- 50:08Yeah, but also she kind of played that role in Victorious.
- 50:12Oh, really? Well, I didn't really watch
- 50:15Victoria's that much, but like I've seen clips and I feel like
- 50:19she kind of was that and maybe Vanessa kind of like.
- 50:23Yeah, inspired her, totally. I mean, I think it could have
- 50:27been OK. The one part that I'm like, I
- 50:31don't know if that aged great, even though I do love it because
- 50:36it's so funny and over the top. Bop to the top when?
- 50:41When Ryan and Charpay do bop to the top, it is kind of just
- 50:45these white kids coming in and being like mucho gusto.
- 50:49Oh my gosh. And of course, if you were in
- 50:53theater or in choir in high school and you're a white kid,
- 50:57I'm sure that you've had a director like choir director or
- 51:00whatever, you know, had you sing a song in another language or
- 51:06in, you know, like another cultural style and, and it
- 51:11didn't land I. Was in chorus and we sing a song
- 51:14from like Zimbabwe or something. Oh, yeah, We always had to do.
- 51:17There would be like, it would be like the Christmas show, but it
- 51:20would be like, OK, but we need to throw a couple more things
- 51:22and be like, we're doing this. We're doing this traditional
- 51:25Zimbabwe song and one Jewish song.
- 51:30So it kind of, I mean, it really brought me back to that place of
- 51:33being in high school in the early mid 2000s when the when
- 51:39the white kids would. Try to like honor a culture and
- 51:45and you can just tell. And you can just.
- 51:47Tell I don't think it aged bad, so I think it did age.
- 51:49Well, yeah, I feel like it was just sort of like, oh, I
- 51:54remember that time. Yeah.
- 51:55You know, like a for effort for sure.
- 51:59I mean bop to the top. Yes, at least they weren't
- 52:01wearing sombreros it. Could have been so much worse.
- 52:05It really could have been worse, and that's a great thing.
- 52:09So and then I also love the line that Ryan says when they do
- 52:16their first audition, when he does a jazz square and Sharpay
- 52:22is like, why'd you do a jazz square?
- 52:23And he's like, everybody loves a good jazz square.
- 52:25It's a fan favorite. Probably one of my favorite
- 52:28lines. I love that I, I think something
- 52:31that I noticed, which this is completely random, but I'm just
- 52:35saying it out loud because it's in my mind is in every show.
- 52:40Obviously, I mean, this is all TV.
- 52:42Like we all know this, especially back in the day,
- 52:44everyone's skinny and and then like the one fat person you're
- 52:51like that's a size 10 at best. Yeah, you're like, that's a
- 52:54really quite. Small person.
- 52:56And then they always make them like very like I'm not like
- 53:01lonesome, but like they're definitely not popular.
- 53:03Oh, definitely. I'd love to see a High School
- 53:05Musical with some big bodies. You know what I'm saying?
- 53:07Me. Too, Because.
- 53:08The one girl, I can't remember her name, she had like the curly
- 53:11hair. Oh yeah, do.
- 53:13You remember her name I. Don't remember her name but I
- 53:15know who you're talking about. Yeah, and she was like the only
- 53:18bigger body person. And that's just why I remember
- 53:20like looking and being like. And probably back in the day I
- 53:22was like, Oh my gosh, she probably is fat.
- 53:24And now I'm like girl, girl, girl.
- 53:27Yeah. And then same with I think her
- 53:30name was Monique. Yeah, yeah.
- 53:32Yeah, the one that Corbin is allegedly married to, according
- 53:36to me. But she was kind of like, not as
- 53:39thin and she. Wasn't as thin as the rest of
- 53:41the girls, right? Yeah, from what I remember.
- 53:43And it's like it's always like the POC or like just like the
- 53:46one offs. Totally, totally.
- 53:49It's a side character. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 53:52It would have been really, really cool if we had Gabriella
- 53:56just like a. A thicker Latina cast me.
- 54:02Big, big booty Latina. Cast me.
- 54:05I Can't Sing, but I'll I'll dance.
- 54:06For you, totally. She'll dance.
- 54:08She doesn't even need to sing, just put somebody else's track.
- 54:13Over it, exactly like she did, yeah.
- 54:14Probably, yeah, Actually one piece that I of information that
- 54:18I learned this time that I had no idea was that Zac Efron
- 54:24actually didn't sing in the first one.
- 54:26I feel like I heard that, yeah. But he did in the in the second
- 54:30and third one. When he's like.
- 54:32Yeah, when he does, bet on it around the golf course.
- 54:34That one was probably my. I think the second one was my
- 54:36favorite. Really.
- 54:37I feel like I vaguely remember the third.
- 54:40I actually never saw the third I.
- 54:41Don't think I've seen the third. That was the only one that the
- 54:44only Disney Channel movie that premiered in theatres.
- 54:47OK, yeah, maybe that's why I didn't see it, but I do.
- 54:49The second one was my favorite. Yeah.
- 54:51The first one, of course, is original, so it'll always be a
- 54:54favorite. Yeah.
- 54:55But like, I feel like Zach really got like into his self
- 54:58and all of the characters kind of got like their own like
- 55:01writing versus like the first one, I feel like they're all
- 55:04kind of like a team. They're paired.
- 55:06But the second one, I feel like we got to know like each
- 55:08character about it totally. And I loved, like, everything
- 55:11about it. I loved every single one of
- 55:13them. I think that Ashley Tisdales
- 55:15character Sharpay is one of the best high school villains.
- 55:19She's so fabulous, she's so dumb.
- 55:23That was like one of my favorite songs.
- 55:25Oh my gosh. Iconic.
- 55:27Still is. Yeah, Every time I go to a pool,
- 55:30I think of that. Song, you better turn it on.
- 55:33I know, right? But truly, she is such an icon
- 55:38and she's just got her little brother just doing everything
- 55:42that she says. I love that.
- 55:43I wish I had a little like peasant brother.
- 55:46I know me too and I do everything.
- 55:47For me. So I can go bop.
- 55:51I need to watch that now, like that part because I don't, I
- 55:53don't think I recognize that part.
- 55:55It was it was incredible listener.
- 55:57You got to go watch bop to the top and just when they go up
- 55:59that ladder and she goes bop to the top, just bop them.
- 56:04OK. I feel like we are sort of
- 56:07rounding the corner to the end. We've got sweet Charlotte here
- 56:10who I think is probably getting ready to ready to run around my
- 56:15assistant, yes. And boss and boss.
- 56:19Frankly, let's be real. And my boss, frankly.
- 56:22But is there anything else about this movie that we didn't
- 56:25discuss that you wanted to call out before we get out of here?
- 56:30I'm trying to think. I think just like what I said,
- 56:33like I, I just feel like I noticed that like one person was
- 56:37like the bigger body. Yeah, because I'm trying to
- 56:39think, did they have any? Like I always like now that I'm
- 56:42older and I'm more like aware of things, I'm like, did they have
- 56:46a person of color? Did they have a bigger body?
- 56:48Did they have a? Wheelchair totally.
- 56:50I that's one thing. I don't remember them having a
- 56:53wheelchair kid in this movie. I think that maybe in the second
- 56:58or maybe in the second one they had a kid in a wheelchair, but
- 57:01maybe not. I feel like today, today like
- 57:05they are really good at like marking all the check like the
- 57:08boxes totally. And back then it was kind of
- 57:11just like, who are the hottest people we can get in?
- 57:14Totally. They're like, we're gonna, we're
- 57:16gonna do the bare minimum. They're like, look, the
- 57:19secondary character, it is half black.
- 57:22I gave you a black man. Yeah.
- 57:25Is that not good enough for you? Who, Of course.
- 57:28He's like one of the only black kids at school.
- 57:30Monique, I think, is her name. Yeah.
- 57:32She's also one of the only black.
- 57:34But at the school, Smart. And then, of course, they found
- 57:36each other. It's like, well, of course.
- 57:39We can't have interracial couples.
- 57:40No, they're like, well, we have black people, So what else could
- 57:45you ask for? Yes, but is Vanessa Hudgens
- 57:49Spanish though? I believe so, yeah.
- 57:51OK, so they're like, OK, we've got white, we've got Spanish,
- 57:55we've got a little chunky girl. Yeah, I think they, I think like
- 57:59high school. I think Disney Channel tried to
- 58:02like tried. I think if they were to exist
- 58:05today and redo things it would be like so much different.
- 58:09Yeah. And but here's The thing is that
- 58:11like, would it even, would it even make a difference in like
- 58:14how people are treated behind the scenes or like how the
- 58:17actors are paid, you know, like that's.
- 58:19Honestly, one thing I feel like I didn't hear much of, because
- 58:22you know how like now there's documentaries about Nickelodeon.
- 58:24We hear a lot of like the negative.
- 58:26Yeah, I feel like I didn't hear as much about Disney.
- 58:29Yeah. Or at least like this cast
- 58:31specifically, right? Because, you know, like the
- 58:34Amanda Bynes show, like most of those characters were affected.
- 58:38So I'm like, I wonder if like, the High School Musical people
- 58:41were interviewed. How was your experience?
- 58:43How were you treated I wonder, Unless I'm missing something.
- 58:48Yeah, we might be missing something, so I didn't think so.
- 58:50We didn't do like the. Best.
- 58:51Research. We didn't do a deep dive
- 58:53homework but. No, but I but you know what I
- 58:56mean? Like, I wonder.
- 58:57I mean, they all seem to be doing well for themselves.
- 58:59So maybe like, I wonder, like, what's the crossover between
- 59:01Nickelodeon and Disney? Right.
- 59:03And like we often talk about how people who were Disney Channel
- 59:08stars ended up becoming like, really mentally unwell.
- 59:11But like, you know, it's. Like the shows versus the
- 59:15movies, too. Exactly.
- 59:17Because like Raven. Yeah.
- 59:19And them. But that was like a whole show,
- 59:21right? Versus the movies.
- 59:24Right. So yeah, was there like
- 59:25different kinds of pressure, I imagine because like, it's a
- 59:28shorter time that you spend filming and.
- 59:31Or, like the producers, I just keep seeing the.
- 59:32Picture I love those, love those kids.
- 59:35Yes. But one other thing is that,
- 59:38like, a lot of them did look like they were in high school,
- 59:40Like Zac Efron looked really young.
- 59:42Some of them looked like they were in their 30s.
- 59:44But a lot of them did look like, oh, they could actually be. 18 I
- 59:47mean, Vanessa looked really young in the first one.
- 59:50Yeah, and same with him. He was pretty young.
- 59:52I think Corbin as well. I feel like maybe some of the
- 59:55like background people could have looked a little older, but
- 59:58maybe they were like who cares? Yeah, they're like, they're not
- 1:00:00important. They're in the background,
- 1:00:02whatever. Well, Becca, thank you again so
- 1:00:06much for coming on. All I can say is get your head
- 1:00:09in the game. Bop to the top.
- 1:00:13And bop to the top and and we're breaking free, right?
- 1:00:17We're soaring, We're flying. Oh yeah?
- 1:00:19What's your favorite song? Oh, that's a great question.
- 1:00:24I would say that one. Soaring and flying, Yeah.
- 1:00:28The breaking free. Breaking free.
- 1:00:30That was like on repeat. But if I ever wanted to feel
- 1:00:33like hyped up, it's definitely bopped to the top, yeah.
- 1:00:37Bopped to the top, I couldn't help but dance when I heard it.
- 1:00:40Yeah, it's. That one's a classic, I think.
- 1:00:43I honestly think as original as the first ones are, the second
- 1:00:47High School Musical two had a better soundtrack for me.
- 1:00:49Yeah, like everything just felt more like.
- 1:00:52Yeah, it was a it was a lot more like power balance, yes.
- 1:00:56The first one was definitely a good intro, but of course you
- 1:00:58can never say no to the basketball scene.
- 1:01:02Of course, I think that's my favorite one is get your head in
- 1:01:04the game. Yeah, with the squeak, squeak.
- 1:01:06Yes, but I think the first song that they sang, like the karaoke
- 1:01:10night was a really good intro. Yeah, I agree.
- 1:01:13But it was also just so random. You're like, OK, we're just
- 1:01:15getting thrown right in. They they just are like.
- 1:01:18Like you said, they literally wasted no time.
- 1:01:21They gotta wrap it up really quick.
- 1:01:24That's what they do. It's Disney Channel, they said.
- 1:01:25We're putting this in 80 minutes. 4 million budget.
- 1:01:29Let's go. Let's go.
- 1:01:30We got it was. Your favorite?
- 1:01:32Like if you had to pick just one.
- 1:01:34I would say Get your head in the game is my favorite.
- 1:01:36A good one. Yeah.
- 1:01:37I love it. Incredible.
- 1:01:41OK, well, let's let's wrap it up.
- 1:01:42Will you plug your socials again?
- 1:01:45Yes. So Instagram very important.
- 1:01:48That's like the OG main platform that I do all of my work on at
- 1:01:54Shop a New ANEW Collective and my Whatnot is a new collective
- 1:02:00and then website to be launched very soon and that's just going

- 1:02:11listener viewer. So definitely recommend that you
- 1:02:15give Becca follow and especially if you're a plus size girly or

- 1:02:35happy to. I do anyone.

- 1:02:48said. That's.

- 1:02:53able to get you on the show today.
- 1:02:55Thank you again for dressing me. Of course, anytime.

- 1:03:03It made me so happy. I felt so seen.
- 1:03:07I felt so like confident that things were like going to fit
- 1:03:11well and not, I didn't have like, I mean, obviously I did
- 1:03:13try everything on because I was like, oh, this is so fun.
- 1:03:16But I didn't have to have that anxiety of like, is this going
- 1:03:19to fit? Is this not?
- 1:03:21I didn't have to have that like just the exhausting process of
- 1:03:25like going through. I love this.
- 1:03:26Everything. Yeah, exactly.
