Transcript
- 0:08Speaker 1: Kate, the co-pilot of this flight may have been trying
- 0:11Speaker 1: to take control of the aircraft and crash it into
- 0:14Speaker 1: Tel Aviv. And so it does raise these red flags
- 0:16Speaker 1: about who missed this and if the intelligence behind the
- 0:19Speaker 1: scenes was actually working.
- 0:21Speaker 2: I just want to thank and congratulate Yaniv Hayoun.
- 0:26Speaker 3: Who's an Israeli plumber, and he's a Trump fan. I'm
- 0:30Speaker 3: a fan of his, a big fan. He saved that
- 0:33Speaker 3: flight yesterday. He did an amazing job.
- 0:35Speaker 1: He got in there, and he learned how to fly
- 0:38Speaker 1: by watching air disasters on television.
- 0:41Speaker 3: And he's my kind of guy. He can be my plumber.
- 0:44Speaker 3: He can be whatever he wants to be. What a
- 0:47Speaker 3: job he did. He's a hero. And I want to
- 0:50Speaker 3: just congratulate him and his family. You like me, and
- 0:54Speaker 3: I like you.
- 0:56Speaker 2: The more we learn about this pilot aboard Fly Dubai,
- 0:59Speaker 2: the attempted hijacking, the worse it gets. His plan? Not
- 1:06Speaker 2: just to kill every single person on that flight, but
- 1:10Speaker 2: to crash that aeroplane after the point of no return
- 1:16Speaker 2: into the airport in Israel. I was there this morning.
- 1:21Speaker 2: thousands of people, this would have been a 9-11. So
- 1:27Speaker 2: what's the answer? How do they stop the copycats? And
- 1:33Speaker 2: what if it were two pilots working together? And what's
- 1:39Speaker 2: the plan, by the way? What does Israel, America... What
- 1:44Speaker 2: do other nations do when they know a plane is
- 1:47Speaker 2: coming in under terrorist control and it's aimed at a
- 1:51Speaker 2: civilian piece of infrastructure? They have a plan. You might
- 1:57Speaker 2: not want to hear it. General Avivi will look after
- 2:02Speaker 2: Israel's internal security if Bibi Netanyahu is re-elected. This is
- 2:07Speaker 2: his space.
- 2:10Speaker 3: Go.
- 2:12Speaker 2: General Avivi, we are hearing even more terrifying elements of
- 2:17Speaker 2: what could have been when it comes to this attempted hijacking.
- 2:22Speaker 2: Are you shocked by the plan? And what is your
- 2:25Speaker 2: understanding of what this co-pilot planned to do?
- 2:28Speaker 4: No, Erin, I'm thinking that this event, like 9-11, will
- 2:33Speaker 4: change completely, you know, everything that has to do with
- 2:36Speaker 4: air traffic, airplanes. I mean, you know, we prepared so
- 2:40Speaker 4: much for a scenario where a terrorist boards a plane
- 2:44Speaker 4: and tries to hijack it by, you know, taking over
- 2:47Speaker 4: the cabin and attacking the pilots. And now we have
- 2:50Speaker 4: a pilot who is trying to bring down the plane.
- 2:54Speaker 4: This is, you know, a scenario that wasn't really discussed seriously.
- 2:58Speaker 4: I mean, we know that today in the cabin they
- 3:02Speaker 4: lock it, you know, so nobody gets in. So imagine
- 3:05Speaker 4: what happens if you have two pilots who want to
- 3:07Speaker 4: bring down the plane or crash it on a building
- 3:10Speaker 4: and the cabin is locked and nobody can go in.
- 3:14Speaker 4: This is not the kind of scenario, you know, globally.
- 3:19Speaker 3: The different countries prepared for.
- 3:21Speaker 4: And we have to rethink everything now and have to
- 3:25Speaker 4: monitor in a completely different way pilots all over the world.
- 3:29Speaker 3: You know, it's not just about Israel. This now can
- 3:32Speaker 3: happen anywhere. Israel, you know, will come around.
- 3:35Speaker 4: We'll, find a solution how to monitor this with the Mossad,
- 3:39Speaker 4: with the Shilbet. But it's not only our problem. We
- 3:44Speaker 4: have to understand this is a much, much bigger event.
- 3:47Speaker 4: It's on a global scale.
- 3:50Speaker 2: You just said something that gave me chills, and that is,
- 3:54Speaker 2: what if it's both pilots? I haven't heard anyone even
- 3:58Speaker 2: bring that up. You're right. It's bad enough when it's won,
- 4:02Speaker 2: and thank God we had that incredible pilot from India
- 4:05Speaker 2: who managed to open that door.
- 4:06Speaker 4: At the last moment, when he was so injured, he
- 4:10Speaker 4: somehow managed to open the door. It was a miracle,
- 4:13Speaker 4: you know, and was so resourceful. And the action he took,
- 4:18Speaker 4: he understood that it's all about managing to open the door.
- 4:22Speaker 4: And then, you know, it enabled the Israelis who were
- 4:26Speaker 4: extremely brave through heroism to storm in and, you know,
- 4:32Speaker 4: stabilize the plane and take over, you know, the situation.
- 4:38Speaker 3: Amazing, amazing event.
- 4:39Speaker 2: Two pilots, though, General, two pilots working together, two terrorists.
- 4:46Speaker 3: How do you stop that? Right. It's a problem. And
- 4:51Speaker 3: I think it means that....
- 4:54Speaker 4: All the regulation that has to do with how you
- 4:57Speaker 4: clear a pilot, how you check he's not radicalized, not
- 5:02Speaker 4: somebody who wants to commit a suicide attack. By the way,
- 5:08Speaker 4: it can be not only somebody who is a terrorist,
- 5:12Speaker 4: even somebody who decides he wants to die. I don't know,
- 5:16Speaker 4: something happened with his wife or whatever, some personal thing,
- 5:20Speaker 4: and he decides it.
- 5:23Speaker 3: He kills himself and everybody else with him. It might happen.
- 5:27Speaker 4: So we really need to rethink the way we think
- 5:30Speaker 4: about clearing pilots and making sure that they're stable mentally
- 5:36Speaker 4: and they're not radicalized. We have to monitor now, at
- 5:41Speaker 4: least from an Israeli perspective, every single plane that is
- 5:46Speaker 4: supposed to land in Israel. We'll have to really check
- 5:49Speaker 4: who are the pilots and How do they conduct themselves
- 5:53Speaker 4: on social media?
- 5:54Speaker 3: Do we have any intelligence about them? But it's not
- 5:57Speaker 3: only about what Israel will do.
- 5:58Speaker 4: It's about really the companies that are hiring them, and
- 6:01Speaker 4: it's their responsibility to make sure that the people they
- 6:06Speaker 4: hire are serious and stable and not radicalized.
- 6:10Speaker 2: I flew from Sydney into Israel. I landed this morning, General,
- 6:16Speaker 2: and as if there weren't already enough things in the
- 6:19Speaker 2: world to be worried about, I was really quite anxious
- 6:23Speaker 2: as I walked on the airplane. And I normally like
- 6:25Speaker 2: to kind of have a look around, but the two
- 6:28Speaker 2: flights that I was on, I stopped in Abu Dhabi.
- 6:31Speaker 2: I'm trying to look into the cockpit to see what
- 6:34Speaker 2: the pilot looks like. And when the pilot on my
- 6:36Speaker 2: second flight made an announcement, the one going into Israel,
- 6:41Speaker 2: had an Indian accent. And I just felt this relief.
- 6:44Speaker 2: And I just think, you're right, this changes everything, not
- 6:49Speaker 2: just for Israelis or people going into Israel, but globally.
- 6:53Speaker 2: And you make a great point as well. You might think, oh,
- 6:55Speaker 2: we're not the target of terrorists. We're fine. But someone
- 6:59Speaker 2: watching this who thinks, I'm going to take my life
- 7:02Speaker 2: and I want to cause as much chaos on the
- 7:04Speaker 2: way out, it's another way of doing it, isn't it?
- 7:06Speaker 2: It changes everything.
- 7:07Speaker 3: Yeah, definitely. Definitely.
- 7:10Speaker 4: And unfortunately, I'm afraid that it's the first event. In
- 7:17Speaker 4: this event, really, it was a miracle and the soulfulness
- 7:21Speaker 4: of the Israelis was unbelievable. But you have to understand
- 7:25Speaker 4: it might happen again and not necessarily with Israelis.
- 7:28Speaker 3: It can happen anywhere.
- 7:30Speaker 4: Who knows how many pilots like that you might have
- 7:32Speaker 4: globally that might try to copy. You know, we know
- 7:35Speaker 4: that this phenomena, when you see a terrorist conducting a
- 7:39Speaker 4: certain kind of attack, immediately, you know, people try to
- 7:44Speaker 4: copy it and.
- 7:46Speaker 3: do it in other places.
- 7:47Speaker 4: So all over, globally, we have to be very alert
- 7:50Speaker 4: and really learn fast and change our procedures and the
- 7:55Speaker 4: way we check things when it comes to pilots or
- 7:57Speaker 4: overall the crew in airplanes.
- 8:00Speaker 2: We're learning that this co-pilot did not just intend to
- 8:05Speaker 2: crash this plane and kill everybody on board, that he
- 8:08Speaker 2: was planning on basically passing that point of no return
- 8:13Speaker 2: as he went to land at Ben Gurion Airport. and
- 8:17Speaker 2: crash into the terminal itself. We're learning through interrogation. That
- 8:21Speaker 2: was his plan. Again, I was there this morning. There
- 8:25Speaker 2: were thousands of people just waiting for luggage, thousands of people,
- 8:28Speaker 2: let alone everywhere else in that airport. How devastating could
- 8:34Speaker 2: this have been? And I know it's, you know, what
- 8:36Speaker 2: do you achieve by going through what-ifs, but you almost
- 8:39Speaker 2: do need to understand the what-if to put the proper
- 8:43Speaker 2: things in place to make sure it doesn't happen.
- 8:47Speaker 4: It could have been devastating with thousands of people, you know,
- 8:51Speaker 4: hurt or killed. And in this kind of scenario, really
- 8:57Speaker 4: the terrible thing is that in this kind of scenario,
- 9:00Speaker 4: if they wouldn't have taken control of the airplane and
- 9:03Speaker 4: the airplane would have continued out of control or with
- 9:07Speaker 4: the terrorists aiming at, you know, Israeli cities or buildings,
- 9:13Speaker 4: the Israeli Air Force would have taken down the airplanes.
- 9:17Speaker 3: With the Israeli citizens, which is terrible.
- 9:20Speaker 4: You know, I can tell you that we have been
- 9:21Speaker 4: practicing this since 9-11.
- 9:24Speaker 3: It became, you know, a big issue.
- 9:26Speaker 2: Okay, so I have a really big treat for you.
- 9:29Speaker 2: And that treat, two free tickets to a movie called

- 11:07Speaker 2: I see all your messages. Love you all.
- 11:10Speaker 3: Enjoy. And I was at the camp.
- 11:12Speaker 4: When I was at the camp of the Chief of
- 11:14Speaker 4: General Staff, there were several nights where we sent, you know, Air.
- 11:20Speaker 3: Force planes towards us.
- 11:24Speaker 4: Civil planes in scenarios where the pilots were not communicating
- 11:29Speaker 4: and not talking to Ben-Gurion it happened several times and
- 11:35Speaker 4: one incident which is a bit funny is that we
- 11:40Speaker 4: also trained the Prime Minister and there is a code
- 11:43Speaker 4: for training and there is a code for a real
- 11:47Speaker 4: event and the specific military secretary of the Prime Minister
- 11:52Speaker 4: at that time He was new, and he wanted to
- 11:57Speaker 4: train the prime minister in the middle of the night.
- 11:59Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 12:00Speaker 3: And he woke him up.
- 12:02Speaker 4: He said there was a plane, 400 people about to crash,
- 12:07Speaker 4: you know, on Israeli. And he gave him by mistake
- 12:11Speaker 4: the real code, not the training code. So the prime
- 12:15Speaker 4: minister thought, it was Sharon, by the way, Prime Minister Sharon,
- 12:18Speaker 4: he thought it's a real event. And without even hesitating,
- 12:25Speaker 4: in the middle of the night, he says to him,
- 12:27Speaker 4: take the airplane down. 400 people. Of course, nothing happened.
- 12:31Speaker 4: It was not real, but you can imagine what kind
- 12:35Speaker 4: of decision-making a prime minister needs to take in the
- 12:40Speaker 4: middle of the night. The same goes here. The Israeli
- 12:42Speaker 4: airplanes were already surrounding this plane. At any given moment,
- 12:46Speaker 4: if the Israelis weren't so heroic and resourceful and took
- 12:51Speaker 4: over the plane, they might at a certain point, they
- 12:54Speaker 4: would have had to take down the plane, which is devastating,
- 12:58Speaker 4: you know.
- 12:59Speaker 2: Absolutely. But it's a way of minimising what would have
- 13:06Speaker 2: been far larger casualties. I can't imagine ever having to
- 13:09Speaker 2: make that decision. Are the Americans, General, do you know,
- 13:12Speaker 2: do they do the same thing? Do they have the
- 13:14Speaker 2: same protocols in place off the back of 9-11 that
- 13:17Speaker 2: they would have to do something similar?
- 13:19Speaker 4: Do you know what they're... I believe that all over
- 13:22Speaker 4: the world there is now, you know, set, you know,
- 13:27Speaker 4: commands of what to do in an event like that.
- 13:31Speaker 4: I mean, most countries understand that this is a realistic scenario.
- 13:34Speaker 4: And unfortunately, we saw it now. You know, we see
- 13:40Speaker 4: what's going on on social media. We see the level
- 13:43Speaker 4: of radicalization everywhere. Look what's going on in France. Looks
- 13:48Speaker 4: almost as a civil war, you know. They burn people
- 13:51Speaker 4: alive and they shoot it.
- 13:53Speaker 3: They look at it. People burn. It's crazy. We live
- 13:58Speaker 3: in a crazy world.
- 13:59Speaker 4: We need to be very, very alert. There is definitely
- 14:03Speaker 4: lessons learned here for the Israeli intelligence community. We'll have
- 14:08Speaker 4: to monitor this much, much, much better. Because this pilot
- 14:13Speaker 4: was posting on social media. It's something we could have
- 14:18Speaker 4: seen if we were monitoring seriously all these pilots, but
- 14:22Speaker 4: also the UAE, you know, should have been able to
- 14:26Speaker 4: understand that this is a problematic guy and not send
- 14:29Speaker 4: somebody from Oman to Israel or Iranian or somebody who
- 14:33Speaker 4: posts these kinds of things on social media.
- 14:36Speaker 2: And multiple times too, General, they're saying that he had
- 14:39Speaker 2: flown in multiple times and that he, I'd read that
- 14:41Speaker 2: he had planned something in July, but. A friend of
- 14:45Speaker 2: his was on the plane, so he decided not to
- 14:47Speaker 2: do it, but he was collecting intelligence. And yeah, it's just, it's,
- 14:51Speaker 2: I mean, some of the stuff online that the Australian
- 14:55Speaker 2: government was aware of, they'd opened a file on him.
- 14:58Speaker 2: It's terrifying that that wasn't somehow all connected. You mentioned
- 15:03Speaker 2: lessons learned. I want to finish by asking you about
- 15:07Speaker 2: three years, October 7th. Whether it feels like three years
- 15:11Speaker 2: to you, I'm here to host a memorial for that.
- 15:16Speaker 2: What would you want to be the greatest lesson learned
- 15:19Speaker 2: by your people off the back of October 7? I
- 15:22Speaker 2: know there are many, but what is the single most
- 15:25Speaker 2: important lesson that your people learn off the back of that?
- 15:28Speaker 4: I think it's actually, I would say, two big lessons. One,
- 15:33Speaker 4: Israel must be able to defend itself by itself. We
- 15:36Speaker 4: need to be able to produce our own capabilities, to
- 15:40Speaker 4: have a big, strong army, and mostly to be proactive.
- 15:43Speaker 4: We cannot let terror entities build around us. We have
- 15:49Speaker 4: to be proactive all the time and degrade them and
- 15:55Speaker 4: really safeguard Israel on an everyday basis and not wait
- 15:59Speaker 4: for such big wars. it was unbelievable to see that
- 16:03Speaker 4: in such a scenario where we were attacked, unprovoked, and
- 16:08Speaker 4: so many people massacred, the day after, the world was
- 16:12Speaker 4: against us, instead of supporting us.
- 16:15Speaker 3: Instead of saying.
- 16:16Speaker 4: You have the right to defend yourself against these atrocities,
- 16:18Speaker 4: against this evil attack, against raping women, burning people alive,
- 16:23Speaker 4: decapitating heads of children. Instead of that, we found ourselves
- 16:27Speaker 4: in a scenario where we are fighting... You know, an
- 16:31Speaker 4: existential war, and most of the world is against us.
- 16:36Speaker 3: It's terrible.
- 16:38Speaker 4: So we have to make sure we are able to
- 16:40Speaker 4: defend ourselves by ourselves and really safeguard the Jewish people,
- 16:44Speaker 4: the one Jewish state we have.
- 16:48Speaker 2: Do you think it's time to stop? And I guess
- 16:52Speaker 2: that ties into what you just said. It's not necessarily
- 16:55Speaker 2: that Israelis want the world to like them or accept them.
- 17:00Speaker 2: At the moment, you need, you know, the support of, say,
- 17:03Speaker 2: America from a security perspective. So what you're saying essentially
- 17:07Speaker 2: is off the back of the world, if the world
- 17:09Speaker 2: can turn against you after that, then you can't rely
- 17:13Speaker 2: on anyone else. So it doesn't matter what they think
- 17:16Speaker 2: if you can do it yourself.
- 17:18Speaker 4: Look, I'll tell you something, Erin. We don't need their love.
- 17:22Speaker 4: We need their respect. And they respect you when you
- 17:24Speaker 4: are strong. to respect you when you are able to
- 17:27Speaker 4: defend yourself, when you are a strong economy, when you
- 17:31Speaker 4: have a strong.
- 17:32Speaker 3: High tech and military. And we see that.
- 17:35Speaker 4: We see so many countries, you know, now deepening relations
- 17:38Speaker 4: with Israel, all of South America and countries in the
- 17:41Speaker 4: Middle East and many European countries. You know, when Israel
- 17:47Speaker 4: was created from 49 all the way to the Six-Day War,
- 17:52Speaker 4: we were boycotted by the U.S., When did the relationship change?
- 17:56Speaker 3: When did the U.S. really become close to Israel?
- 18:00Speaker 4: In the huge victory of the Six-Day War, when we
- 18:02Speaker 4: became a regional power, then the U.S.
- 18:05Speaker 3: Said, wow, these guys now are interesting.
- 18:07Speaker 4: They're not a weak, small nation. We want to do
- 18:10Speaker 4: business with them. And this is international relations. It's not
- 18:16Speaker 4: about love. It's about power. It's about being strong, a
- 18:20Speaker 4: strong society, a prosperous society. society that can defend itself,
- 18:26Speaker 4: and a moral society. And we are very proud of
- 18:28Speaker 4: our morality. So when you have all of this, then
- 18:34Speaker 4: you are respected and you can have good international relations.
- 18:37Speaker 4: We're experiencing with more and more countries moving embassies to Jerusalem.
- 18:43Speaker 4: We're about to move the 11th embassy to Jerusalem. And
- 18:49Speaker 4: this is what a successful country manages to do. And
- 18:52Speaker 4: we intend, you know, to move Israel not only to
- 18:56Speaker 4: a great victory in this war, but to a golden age.
- 18:59Speaker 4: This golden age is really behind the corner. We have
- 19:03Speaker 4: to continue being resolute, winning the war, and to see economy,
- 19:09Speaker 4: you know, booming, prosperity, new rules of trade, international relations,
- 19:16Speaker 4: but Unfortunately, all of this will happen, but we also
- 19:20Speaker 4: see the rising anti-Semitism at the same time in many,
- 19:23Speaker 4: many countries, in the societies, which we have to deal with.
- 19:27Speaker 4: And here we manage to deal with really a very
- 19:32Speaker 4: big threat to the Jewish world.
- 19:35Speaker 2: Brilliantly said. And as your prime minister said at the
- 19:38Speaker 2: United Nations, you might have countries that walk out or
- 19:42Speaker 2: leaders who, publicly disparaging, but behind the scenes they're reaching
- 19:47Speaker 2: out and saying, can you help us with this? Can
- 19:48Speaker 2: we have that technology? can we buy this etc etc
- 19:51Speaker 2: so it's.
- 19:52Speaker 4: You know in the u.n you had 123 countries sitting
- 19:57Speaker 4: in the room listening to prime minister netanyahu.
- 19:59Speaker 3: Believe me that those who went out run run to
- 20:02Speaker 3: the tv to watch also.
- 20:06Speaker 4: All the european countries were sitting i think a part
