Latest / Brandon Fogal Evolution / #145 - Wes Huff Goes Scorched Earth Against Catholic Claims
Transcript
- 0:00So Wes Huff just went scorched earth on defending the Protestant view of scripture, the Bible.
- 0:07He just gave a response yesterday to what he believes is why we have the Bible
- 0:11and what authority do we have?
- 0:14What determined the authority of the Bible? Was it the church or was it the Bible itself?
- 0:19All right, let's dive into this. I want to show a couple of clips from that
- 0:22video that Wes just gave out. It was very good.
- 0:25I wouldn't call myself a Protestant. I wouldn't call myself a Catholic.
- 0:29I'm kind of like just the outside guy myself, and I don't know if anybody else is out there.
- 0:35I don't align completely with Protestantism, or I believe in a lot of things
- 0:39that Catholics believe. I believe in a lot of things that Orthodox believe.
- 0:41I'm kind of out there. The closest thing that I could say about myself is the
- 0:46viewpoint of Messianic Judaism, if you're familiar with that phraseology at all.
- 0:51So just to kind of give you a point of where I am and coming at this because
- 0:54I agree with a lot of what Wes says in this video, but I'm still not completely
- 0:59everything I agree with him as any Christian. No Christian believes the exact same thing.
- 1:03You know, we have varying opinions about a lot of different things.
- 1:06But let's actually take a look at this. Him, given his defense of where the
- 1:11authority of Scripture came from. I accept the Bible.
- 1:15Am I really accepting the authority of the church, even if I don't admit it?
- 1:20No. And let me explain why. The church is not the origin of scripture.
- 1:25God is. When I say that scripture is the sole infallible rule of faith and practice
- 1:31for the church, what I'm making there is a statement on the origin of scripture.
- 1:37The origin of scripture is divine.
- 1:40And to a degree, the Roman Catholic position can agree with the origin statement,
- 1:46although clearly disagreeing with that being the sole infallible rule.
- 1:50In insofar as Vatican I states that these books the Church holds to be sacred
- 1:55and canonical, not because she subsequently approved them by her authority,
- 2:00but because being written under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit,
- 2:05they have God as their author and were as much committed to the Church.
- 2:10The early church did not invent.
- 2:12Okay, so just starting off the bat, I know because I just saw a video the other
- 2:16week on Friday. It was actually really good with Tim Pool.
- 2:20He had a guy from Protestantism, a guy from Orthodox, a guy from Roman Catholicism
- 2:26all getting into a room and just debating and just hashing it out.
- 2:30And it turned me off. If I wasn't a Christian going into that and seeing that,
- 2:35I don't think I would become a Christian just listening to that.
- 2:38Just the arguments and some of the vitriol against just within,
- 2:42and I don't know that they agree that everybody's within the church,
- 2:45you know, because they're coming from different viewpoints and they just see,
- 2:48oh, Protestants are just disillusioned brethren.
- 2:51You know, they are outside the framework, but God's going to kind of save them through his grace.
- 2:56I don't think when Jesus was on earth, he was creating something and saying,
- 3:00I hope you become a Roman Catholic, or I hope you become Protestant.
- 3:04Or I hope you become Orthodox because, you know, that is the what started it
- 3:08all. And that's what's going to continue.
- 3:10I think there's elements of that. I think people are just fallen and sinful. And we disagree.
- 3:15We disagree over sometimes stupid issues, sometimes big issues.
- 3:19But but Wes's point in all of this is he's defending sola scriptura,
- 3:24saying the Bible is its authority because it's the Bible.
- 3:27It's recognized as the Bible because God breathed it out. It's self-evident.
- 3:32It's not that it needed the stamp of approval of the church,
- 3:36but the church just recognized it.
- 3:38And I would agree with that, that the 66 books of the Bible are what is God
- 3:46breathed, the inspired word of God.
- 3:48Now we get into the, I kind of, I'm curious about the book of Enoch and all that.
- 3:52And I think a lot of, there's a lot of scriptures out there that aren't God
- 3:56said it's written, you know, and we have it from his mouth to us.
- 4:00I think about the book of Enoch, is there elements of that that could have been inspired?
- 4:06Because even if you get into the Apocrypha and all those other books that the
- 4:11Roman Catholics have in their Bible, I would say there's a lot of good stuff in there.
- 4:15And just, it's like, that's why they would even categorize it as it's the deuterocanonical.
- 4:21It's not like the canonical, but it's the deuterocanonical words of God.
- 4:26So there's so much disagreement of this, but I think we all agree that the 66
- 4:33books are the inspired word of God.
- 4:36But I want to continue on what Wes kind of, what he gives in his description of these things.
- 4:41The early church got the canonization process right, not because they're infallible,
- 4:47but because we can trust the Holy Spirit in his act of leading and because God's
- 4:53word is self-authenticating.
- 4:54Even Roman Catholicism, which holds to holy tradition as infallible,
- 4:58has no formal infallible list of infallible traditions.
- 5:02There is no reference source. A modern Roman Catholic can cite or source from,
- 5:07say, the Vatican or a church council somewhere that infallibly lists the infallible
- 5:13traditions that all Roman Catholics must adhere to. But neither of us need such a source.
- 5:19I can say that 2 plus 2 is 4 not because I'm infallible, but because I have
- 5:24a reasonable confidence to ground the truth of that statement in.
- 5:28And even more so, I can ground the truth of the statement that the early church
- 5:32got the right books within the canon of scripture,
- 5:35both due to reasonable confidence and due to the theological reality that I
- 5:39trust the Holy Spirit's guidance for them to do so. Okay.
- 5:44So right there, there is so much there. The way that we all came,
- 5:47the early church described and said, this is the books of the Bible.
- 5:51This is because there was so much disagreement early on of what can make it,
- 5:56what can make the canon of scripture and that we all came together,
- 6:00that we were all in one place and put it together.
- 6:02It wasn't that they had it all together and that, that they're the reason that
- 6:07it got its authority, but solely because they understood it.
- 6:11If you read the Bible compared to anything else, even like the Deuterocanonical
- 6:15books, like the Apocrypha and even parts of Enoch are like, cause there's the
- 6:20difference between Enoch, when
- 6:21you get into first Enoch and then the other Enochs that are out there.
- 6:24That's a whole thing in itself, you know, and that could be pushed aside a little
- 6:27bit, but just the 66 books of the Bible compared to the Apocrypha and what was
- 6:32assumed is God's breathed word, it is self-evident.
- 6:36If you read one compared to the other, you understand, you hear your father's
- 6:40voice by reading the Bible.
- 6:42You hear those 66 books of the Bible. That's why in 1 John, it talks about you
- 6:47have the spirit of truth in you. You do not need someone else to teach you.
- 6:52The spirit of truth is going to lead you into all truth.
- 6:56But where I could kind of disagree with the Protestant viewpoint is the authority aspect,
- 7:02the authority aspect that Roman Catholicism, I believe, has it correct in a
- 7:08lot of ways, the authority part, because that is what is throughout the Old
- 7:13Testament where the Jews.
- 7:17Difference is the Jews got it right. They're the ones that were given the ministerial
- 7:23duty to rightly interpret the scriptures.
- 7:27That's why they created the oral traditions and all that too.
- 7:30And that was given to the apostles. The apostles were the Jews.
- 7:34They are the select nation that has the right authority to interpret the scriptures.
- 7:40Now we're just in this messed up issue, this messed up situation where Christians,
- 7:45which is primarily Gentile, has the Christ. We have Jesus. We have the Messiah.
- 7:52And he's like, there's a blindness over the nation of Israel right now.
- 7:56And they're the ones that have really the authority to rightly interpret things.
- 8:00It's this schism that has happened between Gentile and Jews.
- 8:05That's why I think that the Gentile church, primarily Gentiles,
- 8:08just got the gospel and they ran with it and were doing the best that we can.
- 8:13But because we have just kind of blocked off the Jewish nation in a lot of ways,
- 8:19we don't make it easy for them to embrace Christ in a lot of ways.
- 8:24In a lot of ways, the traditions we do, and it just, we have Jesus painted up
- 8:29in all this garb that doesn't look Jewish.
- 8:31It doesn't fit with what they expected the Messiah to be.
- 8:34And I know that there was a high disagreement early on, you know,
- 8:38and of the Jewish people were so against Christians, you know,
- 8:42and Gentile people were so against Jews because we just said,
- 8:45oh, they are the ones that killed Christ.
- 8:47We're the ones that are putting all the blood on their hands. It's all their fault.
- 8:52Rather, when Jesus went to the cross, it was all of us doing that.
- 8:57The Jewish leaders are the ones that put them up there, but the Romans,
- 9:00the Gentiles are the ones that executed them.
- 9:03So I'm just saying, like, I agree with this, like, sola scriptura to a sense,
- 9:09and that those are the primary, those are the books of the Bible,
- 9:13the God-breathed word of God.
- 9:15But the authority aspect is still hanging out there, and I think that Roman
- 9:19Catholics and even Orthodox to an extent are doing the best they can,
- 9:22and they're taking the traditions of what we know God is like and what we know
- 9:27that he gives people authority to rightly interpret things, to make judgments over things.
- 9:32I just think that we are kind of, we're doing the best we can,
- 9:35but we're not the ones that have the authority.
- 9:37The Jewish nation is the ones that has the authority. That's their word of God.
- 9:41Gentiles are the ones being grafted in.
- 9:44That's why I kind of agree with the Messianic Judaism for all nations.
- 9:48If you are familiar with that, it's the first fruits of Zion kind of viewpoint.
- 9:52But even I don't even agree with everything of that. It's I know it's it becomes
- 9:57like this buffet kind of Christianity. I like this. I don't like that.
- 10:00I get that. But I don't think anyone has it all correct.
- 10:03I think the only thing that does have it all correct is the 66 books of the
- 10:07Bible that we have, you know, and I think is once the Jewish nation kind of
- 10:11gets their eyes get open to their Messiah has come.
- 10:15I think that is when things are going to come together.
- 10:18We're going to rightly understand so many things that are hidden from our eyes
- 10:23in the Bible that don't make sense and that we kind of just try to explain,
- 10:28but we really don't know what the heck we're doing.
- 10:31All right. So if you've enjoyed this video, hit this link and I will see you on the other side.
