- 1:07Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: Hello, I'm Donna J. Jodhan and I have another remarkable World
- 1:17Commentary podcast to share with you for today.
- 1:20It's my second remarkable world commentary podcast for November.
- 1:29And you know, I'm really enjoying doing this,
- 1:33sharing my ideas with you.
- 1:35And I want to thank you for sending me your feedback,
- 1:40because it helps me to really sit down and think of what I would like to share with you
- 1:49each time I have my podcast.
- 1:52So for today, I want to talk about awareness training for real estate agents.
- 2:00I think with a rapidly aging population and more and more persons wanting to have homes
- 2:09that suit their needs and requirements.
- 2:13I think that real estate agents really need now to help us make all of this happen.
- 2:20Okay, so. Our real estate agents really
- 2:30aware of the types of homes that persons with special needs or persons with disabilities
- 2:39are seeking. Do they really understand the type of home that,
- 2:46you know, this growing group of clients are really seeking?
- 2:53But then again, it all depends on having accessible homes for real estate agents
- 3:03to show to clients with disabilities.
- 3:09So you've got to start from the top and think of how accessible are homes for persons with
- 3:18disabilities. And if there are enough or more and more of these,
- 3:25then real estate agents need to be more aware that they do exist.
- 3:31So you start with the developer.
- 3:33The developer needs to keep this very important fact in their mind.
- 3:40And then you go to the real estate agent who needs to become more aware of homes that are
- 3:46accessible for persons with disabilities.
- 3:50Okay. Where are these homes located?
- 3:54Are they located in convenient areas for persons who,
- 4:02you know, persons with disabilities?
- 4:04All right. And think about the physical Facilities.
- 4:10Do these homes contain the physical facilities that are needed for persons who
- 4:19are persons with disabilities?
- 4:21Okay. And when I say physical facilities, what I mean is like you shouldn't an agent
- 4:28shouldn't really try to sell a home to a person with a disability.
- 4:33If that home contains lots of stairs and the person with the disability or the client with
- 4:39the disability is someone either in a wheelchair or who uses a mobility aid,
- 4:47or someone who is blind slash vision impaired.
- 4:51Okay. So these are things to take into account.
- 4:55And are the facilities suitable, like the kitchen for example countertops and
- 5:04being able to reach cupboards and shelves easily.
- 5:08Right. And the bathrooms are the big enough for wheelchairs to go into,
- 5:16or persons who use wheelchairs or persons with mobility aids.
- 5:20Are they big enough? Is this space big enough in the home to accommodate mobility aids and
- 5:27wheelchairs? Okay, then the real estate agent needs to think about types of equipment that
- 5:34are needed for persons who, you know, persons with disabilities.
- 5:41Types of equipment, you know, adequate dishwashers,
- 5:46toaster ovens, microwaves, washers, dryers, you know,
- 5:51these accessible appliances and appropriate doorbells and things like that.
- 5:58Okay. And then you've got to look at cost effectiveness,
- 6:03making sure that your client, if they are a person with a disability,
- 6:11can afford to have all these things or find workarounds.
- 6:17We want to work together agents, developers and persons with disabilities to
- 6:23ensure that accessible homes are made more aware and that real estate agents are made
- 6:33more aware of the needs of persons with disabilities.
- 6:37So that's my thought for today.
- 6:40I thank you for listening and I wish you a good day.
