- 0:01Welcome in Bring the Thunder podcast here with Thunder Fan
- 0:04Zone, Landon and Jack Thunder coverage.
- 0:07We're going to be talking about Thomas Sorber, the 15th pick.
- 0:10Also, we're going to talk about the trade that we had on draft
- 0:12night. Give some draft grades here.
- 0:15We're going to start up some of this film and talk a little bit
- 0:18about Thomas Orberman. Let's kick things off.
- 0:20What do you guys think about this pick up for us?
- 0:26It's good value at 15. I think Sam Presti made the pick
- 0:34thinking into the future. We have Hartenstein who's on an
- 0:39expensive contract. We have Jay will his future on
- 0:43the team's kind of in there. I would personally love to keep
- 0:46him around as like a locker room presents kind of a loyal, keep
- 0:52him around as a loyal guy who spends his whole career here.
- 0:54But I don't know, that may be dreaming.
- 0:57Then you have chat. So this guy's 19, he probably
- 1:04still needs two or three years to grow in the league, so the
- 1:07timeline just kind of works out. Yeah, What do you think, Jack?
- 1:14I think it's a great pick, just adding better defense.
- 1:18I will one of the better defenses of this draft to the
- 1:22best defense in the league. We started with Casey Wallace a
- 1:25couple years ago, not much to it, probably the best pick.
- 1:29A couple guys like Cedric Cow, Derek Queen went just before us,
- 1:33said well on everyone's OKC big boards.
- 1:37But I'm pretty happy with it. Like Landon said, great
- 1:41developmental big that we can bring up depending on what
- 1:44happens to our bigs in the future.
- 1:46But either way, great to have this big depth.
- 1:49Yeah, Going into the draft, we we really said that we need
- 1:52either consistent shooting or big to bring up for when Hansen
- 1:57eventually leaves. And it's been answered here, so
- 2:00I'm pretty happy with it. Yeah, I would say I'm overall
- 2:05like happy with the trade or happy with this pick.
- 2:08I guess he's he's got the length, he's got the defense.
- 2:13He was ranked as like the second best defender in the class.
- 2:16Like he's 69610 good, got good size out of the pressing mold.
- 2:21He can, you know, play make. I think we needed more play
- 2:24making. He can be someone that's at the
- 2:25top of the key play making as you guys can probably see some
- 2:29of the passes that he'll make in the highlights.
- 2:32And then also he's good in the post, some rim crasher.
- 2:34I don't think we had enough consistent rim pressure.
- 2:36We have a lot of jump shooters and that can vary when you're in
- 2:41the play offs and just in the regular season as well where we
- 2:43have stretches where we don't make a lot of shots.
- 2:45And so this is a guy that can just go get a bucket when we
- 2:48need a bucket high motor guy. We needed someone like this.
- 2:52I've been waiting for Presti to draft another, you know, power
- 2:56forward that's a little bit more traditional.
- 2:59I think he's going to be solid for us.
- 3:01And he's not just a traditional power forward like he can do a
- 3:04lot of other things. The other big thing that I had a
- 3:07question mark on was can he guard the perimeter?
- 3:09And from the highlights that I've seen, he's guarding smaller
- 3:12guards. We'll just see if he can do that
- 3:14in the NBA because it's a different level of athletes.
- 3:17So those are the only like concerns that I have is like if
- 3:20you can, you know, develop that 3 point shot.
- 3:23He's got good mid range, like face up play.
- 3:25So overall he's good. Like you can see he moves his
- 3:28feet pretty quick even when he gets beat because of his length.
- 3:30He'll get blocks on guys, but in the NBA he's going to have to
- 3:33develop his speed. So there's going to be some
- 3:36developmental pieces to his game.
- 3:38But overall, I think he can come in and play decent minutes for
- 3:42us. Probably just to start off the
- 3:43season, him and Topich in the summer league are going to
- 3:47dominate, like probably demolition job.
- 3:50So I'm at least excited about that.
- 3:52What kind of draft grade are you giving this one, Landon?
- 3:57I'd go AB. It's very good value.
- 4:00At 15, you're probably getting the best guy you can get.
- 4:04I was actually, I was between when I saw the guys that that
- 4:09were available at 15, I thought it was going to be him or Noel.
- 4:12And then Ace of Newell dropped very far into the 20s.
- 4:15I'm not sure exactly what pick that kind of shocked me, but
- 4:20just to because I mean, I would have loved to get like a wing
- 4:24guy like Carter Bryant or Cedric Coward.
- 4:27Cedric Coward went really high, which honestly wasn't a shock to
- 4:31me. He's low on a lot lower on some
- 4:34mock drafts, but he ended up going where I thought he would
- 4:36go. I thought if we wanted to get
- 4:39him, we might have had to trade up and Carter Bryant went to the
- 4:42Spurs to pick before us. But I would go be just because
- 4:45it solves a lot of roster construction issues we might
- 4:49face in the future and Sam Presti's already thinking one
- 4:53step ahead. We're not going to have to bring
- 4:55in it if this guy ends up developing into what he's
- 4:58supposed to be. We're not going to have to go to
- 5:00free agency inside a big or trade some of our guys and go
- 5:04get a big because we'll already have one on our roster.
- 5:08Yeah, I completely agree. What do you think, Jack?
- 5:12I got an A for the draft grade. I think for what press he could
- 5:18could have done with that pick, I think that's the most we could
- 5:22have asked for him. I'm sure while those reports he
- 5:25tried to trade up, but I think some teams would have been a bit
- 5:28salty that we just won and try to trade off and probably denied
- 5:31us. Not much he can do.
- 5:35I mean, out of the players left, there's no one else I would have
- 5:38preferred other than Thomas Sober.
- 5:44But yeah, it's hard to to get someone with a better fit if we
- 5:50didn't trade up. So I think that's the best case
- 5:52scenario. So hey.
- 5:55Oh and then I do want to say he wasn't able to do pre draft
- 5:59workouts because of a toe injury.
- 6:01So I think he should be all good there.
- 6:04But it's definitely interesting that Presti kind of just drafted
- 6:08him off Phil and not actually getting a glimpse of him in a
- 6:12workout. Yeah, I think that was an
- 6:16interesting piece that that's probably a reason that he fell a
- 6:18little bit further because I feel like if he did do draft
- 6:20workouts, he would have been drafted much higher for the type
- 6:23of skill level that he's at. I'm going to give this an A
- 6:26minus for where we were picking all the guys that were picked
- 6:30before him. So for value, I think it's
- 6:33really good to get like a top 2 defensive guy in the draft
- 6:38that's a big man at that pick. I think that's really good.
- 6:43Let's move over to if you guys have any other thoughts on this,
- 6:47you guys can mention it now, but I want to mention over to the
- 6:50Kings trade at 24. What do you guys think about
- 6:53that one? What is it?
- 6:57Top 16? Top 16 protected.
- 7:00So the exact trait is the Sacramento Kings are sending a
- 7:02top 16 protected 2027 first round pick from San Antonio to
- 7:07Oklahoma City in exchange for the 24.
- 7:10And obviously they get neat Clifford in that trade.
- 7:14It's like you have a nucleus of guys who have proven they can
- 7:17want a championship. Why break it up?
- 7:19Why not stick with what you know wins championships and you add 2
- 7:24guys, that probably means you have to actually get rid of
- 7:26someone. That's key to irritation.
- 7:28But you draft one first. One guy in the first round,
- 7:31you're probably good on that. And you also have tofich coming
- 7:34in. You have to keep that in mind.
- 7:36So it's probably the best move coming into the season. 2 first
- 7:42round guys could really 'cause some roster problems make life
- 7:46hard for Sam Press. He just made his life 10 times
- 7:49easier by making that trade. And I think what's 2027 top 16
- 7:54protected Spurs? Yeah, that's.
- 7:56At the time, with their young core, they just added two more
- 7:59guys. They had a Dylan Harper at 2:00
- 8:01and then Carter Bryant pick before us.
- 8:03By the time 2027 hits, they're going to be in the playoffs and
- 8:06they're not going to be a tough, they're not going to be a bottom
- 8:0816 team, so we're going to get that pick.
- 8:11Yeah, I would assume the same thing.
- 8:14What? Do you think?
- 8:16Oh, sorry. OK.
- 8:18I was just going to say, I was just going to say a 2027 pick in
- 8:21the 20s would be a lot more valuable to to us than a pick in
- 8:26the 20s and 2025. He's just extending.
- 8:29He's just extending our timeline.
- 8:31He wants to turn this thing into a dynasty, and I can't blame
- 8:34him. Yeah, As for Grad, I've probably
- 8:39given a minus exactly what I mean.
- 8:41We were all expecting it. He can't draft three players
- 8:44this year because I mean, even we don't know what's going to
- 8:48happen with the roster with Sober now, but we basically just
- 8:52got the same pick two years later, which is perfect.
- 8:56Nick Clifford would have been nice, but again, how does he fit
- 8:59on the team? So this is exactly what Presti
- 9:02had to do and for him to get it done is pretty, pretty cool.
- 9:05So I'm sure we'll be enjoying this pick and two years after
- 9:08our three pick. Yeah, side with a minus.
- 9:13Great. I mean, there, I guess there's a
- 9:14small chance the Spurs could have a fallout and end up
- 9:18screwing it up, but I really don't see that happening.
- 9:22Yeah, I'll give this trade probably like a overall like it
- 9:27was just kind of expected needed to happen.
- 9:30There wasn't much value that you could really extract from it.
- 9:34So he kind of just got what he could and I think it's OK.
- 9:38Like it's, it's solid. I guess moving over towards the
- 9:44second round for the next, I guess pick pick #44.
- 9:50What do you guys think about that?
- 9:51Any ideas on who will take over there?
- 9:58I don't think it gets used if I'm being honest.
- 10:01I mean, I guess, I guess that's two way territory.
- 10:06So I mean if, if we like, the only way I see Presti using it
- 10:10is if there's value there and there's a guy he pinpointed
- 10:14before the draft and that he really likes there.
- 10:18I guess that is two way range. So I guess you could drop one of
- 10:21our two way contracts and draft a guy there and sign them to a
- 10:24two way contract if the opportunity presents itself.
- 10:29Definitely what we should do with APEC.
- 10:32Couple of names, the Rashef Fleming and Maxim Reynold.
- 10:36I think if we can get out with one of those guys, then this is
- 10:40going to be another world class draft from Presti.
- 10:44I'm very high on Richard Fleming.
- 10:45He fell into the second round so I think it'd be a no brainer to
- 10:49go and get him. Maybe trade up in the second
- 10:51round. But to add someone on a two way,
- 10:54a bit like AJ Mitchell last year and then if they get enough,
- 10:57bring them onto the full just to increase that depth at the the
- 11:02fourth slot or you could add some shooting.
- 11:05Who knows what Presti's going to do.
- 11:07I think it it might be an older guy with a bit more experience
- 11:09we can head to this team, but I think will be the move.
- 11:16Would it shock me if it's just someone that can shoot the
- 11:18lights out of the ball? Yeah, yeah.
- 11:22Or or someone or someone super raw that we can develop behind
- 11:26the scenes. Yeah, it'll definitely be a two
- 11:28way guy. I think we take the pick because
- 11:31like, why not? Why not, you know, test someone
- 11:33out? We'll probably get a bunch of
- 11:36undrafted guys on the G League team anyways.
- 11:38So, you know, Thunder are known for that development of factor.
- 11:43The name that I've heard being thrown the most is the best
- 11:46shooter in the second round, which is Kobe Brya.
- 11:48We've seen that comment come in a lot.
- 11:51He's kind of recognized as one of the best shooters.
- 11:54So I think why not get him if we can trade up to get him because
- 11:56I don't think he's going to drop that far down.
- 11:58But also we've seen Presti use up a lot of his seconds because
- 12:02there's no real use for them in our in our case, like there's
- 12:05not much value that we can extract from the second with the
- 12:08level of roster that we have. So I could see him trading up
- 12:10for that name or any other lights out shooter because
- 12:14shooting is a big need for us. The other thing I guess we could
- 12:17go for is maybe another play making guard on a two way
- 12:21similar to like AJ, maybe a little bit more size, something
- 12:24like that, just to, you know, have another another guy just to
- 12:27see if that'll work out for us. But I'm excited to see what we
- 12:32do. And also I wanted to mention for
- 12:36Sorber, his stats as a freshman, he averaged 14 1/2 points, 8 1/2
- 12:41rebounds, 2.4 assists, 1 1/2 Seals, 2 blocks per game while
- 12:46shooting 53% from the field. He only shot 16% from three.
- 12:50But we've seen like our team developed guys like Jay Will
- 12:54into knock down shooters. So I don't, you know, I have
- 12:58faith in Chip, who is one of the best shooting coaches in the
- 13:01league to develop him and, you know, get a shot at least enough
- 13:05to where he can space the floor. He's not like a high volume
- 13:08shooter. Most of our team is at high
- 13:10volume and he's another guy that doesn't really require a lot of
- 13:12touches from what I've seen. So I think he fits in good with
- 13:16the system that we're trying to run.
- 13:18And on the shooting, he he shoots 70% from the free throw.
- 13:22So I think that shows he's, he's got some framework, some fan
- 13:27dashes to build off. So I think he could become a
- 13:29shooter in the on the next level.
- 13:32No, the forms there, it's a work in progress and the free throw
- 13:35form looks good. I think I don't think he'll have
- 13:38it right away, but I think that's the next step in his NBA
- 13:42journey is developing an outside shot and then back to the 44th
- 13:46pick. I I was thinking about it and I
- 13:48know press, he's always looking into the future.
- 13:50I'd be shocked if all three of our two way guys end up staying
- 13:55on two ways for in the long term.
- 13:58I think one of them is at least one of them is capable of being
- 14:03on an NBA team. And I see one, at least one of
- 14:06them ending up on an NBA contract somewhere.
- 14:09Because if you're a two way guy, you're not just going to sit and
- 14:12stay on a two way. You're going to, you want to,
- 14:15you want to make more money, you want to get more opportunity.
- 14:18And I mean in a standard NBA contracts better than a two way
- 14:23contract. Yeah, yeah, I agree.
- 14:26I think Presti's very commutative with this player, so
- 14:30he's definitely, you know, make the best opportunity for them
- 14:33and, you know, let them know early that what he's thinking
- 14:36about and what they're thinking about.
- 14:37Anytime someone asks out from Sam, Presti usually obliges with
- 14:41them. He's very player friendly.
- 14:43But that's kind of all for you guys in terms of our draft
- 14:46analysis, grades and everything else like that.
- 14:48Hopefully you guys enjoyed this. We got more content coming out.
- 14:51Make sure you guys hit that subscribe and we appreciate you
- 14:53guys hit that like button as well.
- 14:55Thank you so much.
