Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Open AI's contribution to the San Francisco economy. It's a
- 0:03Speaker 1: little bit clear right dev day. There are thousands of attendees,
- 0:06Speaker 1: there are people being drawn to the city to work
- 0:08Speaker 1: in the field of AI. But probably the biggest story
- 0:12Speaker 1: most recently was the secondary sale Open ai employees being
- 0:17Speaker 1: able to sell some of their stock, wealth creation and
- 0:20Speaker 1: as a place to start. I wondered, has the city
- 0:22Speaker 1: recognized any kind of trickle down economic benefit from that,
- 0:26Speaker 1: all of these people that have made careers and now
- 0:28Speaker 1: wealth from their time in open AI.
- 0:30Speaker 2: Well, I think you're seeing the momentum build in our city.
- 0:33Speaker 2: You know, that sale just happened in the last few days.
- 0:36Speaker 2: So I can't say that we've seen trill down. But
- 0:39Speaker 2: what I can say is we've got thousands and thousands
- 0:42Speaker 2: of people coming into work every day. Down by Chase Center,
- 0:45Speaker 2: they have over a million square feet of office space.
- 0:48Speaker 2: That part of town is booming right now. Restaurants are
- 0:52Speaker 2: opening up left and right. The energy is back in
- 0:57Speaker 2: San Francisco, and we know open ai is having a
- 0:59Speaker 2: big contributing effect to that.
- 1:02Speaker 1: Does the city like commission studies on specifically what AI
- 1:06Speaker 1: is doing for the city.
- 1:08Speaker 2: I think we've done those in past years. I haven't
- 1:10Speaker 2: seen any recently. What I have seen is from Visa.
- 1:15Speaker 2: Visa showed me numbers from January to June thirtieth up
- 1:20Speaker 2: ten percent in person spending in San Francisco using the
- 1:24Speaker 2: Visa space on credit Collture credit card every month got
- 1:27Speaker 2: stronger and stronger, higher than any other major city in
- 1:31Speaker 2: the country. So we're seeing the momentum build. I haven't
- 1:35Speaker 2: seen any studies just on AI, but let me be clear,
- 1:39Speaker 2: we are the home of AI. We're going to continue
- 1:41Speaker 2: to lean into that. I talked to mayors across the city,
- 1:44Speaker 2: across the country. They all are desperate to get one
- 1:49Speaker 2: of the companies that we have. We have them all anthropic,
- 1:52Speaker 2: open AI salesforce. It's all happening here and we're happy
- 1:57Speaker 2: about it.
- 1:57Speaker 1: So open any Eye's new head quotes was a ribbon
- 2:00Speaker 1: cutting moment for you, literally, But have you held discussions
- 2:03Speaker 1: with them about doing more, expanding the real estate footprint.
- 2:08Speaker 1: What is it that you're asking for.
- 2:09Speaker 2: Well, I'm asking from the leadership from SAM and others
- 2:13Speaker 2: and also other companies, is we want you here, We
- 2:16Speaker 2: want and welcome you here, but we want you to
- 2:18Speaker 2: be part of San Francisco. We want you to be
- 2:20Speaker 2: part of our schools, our arts institutions, our parks. We
- 2:24Speaker 2: want your employees engaged in the community. So that's my
- 2:27Speaker 2: big ask. I'm going to focus on creating the conditions
- 2:30Speaker 2: so that small businesses and businesses like Open AI and
- 2:34Speaker 2: Anthropic can thrive. I'm going to make sure that we
- 2:37Speaker 2: continue to drive crime down, which we're doing. We're gonna
- 2:39Speaker 2: have better street conditions, and then we want to be
- 2:43Speaker 2: open for business, and we are and it's happening before
- 2:46Speaker 2: our life.
- 2:47Speaker 1: We have had the opportunity to discuss this several times
- 2:50Speaker 1: since you took off this. I'm grateful for that, but
- 2:53Speaker 1: the same question still applies. How do you keep technology
- 2:56Speaker 1: companies coming to the city of San Francisco not Silicon.
- 3:01Speaker 2: Well, we are the innovation ecosystem of the world when
- 3:05Speaker 2: it comes to AI, and what we need to do
- 3:07Speaker 2: as city government and as the mayor is make sure
- 3:09Speaker 2: that people feel safe walking down the street with their kids.
- 3:13Speaker 2: Make sure that we get people that are struggling with
- 3:15Speaker 2: addiction off the street and into mental health and drug
- 3:18Speaker 2: treatment events. We are working relentlessly on both of those.
- 3:22Speaker 2: We create the conditions for safe and clean streets. We
- 3:26Speaker 2: are doing permit reform to make life easier for our
- 3:28Speaker 2: small businesses, our restaurants, our bars, which are opening up
- 3:31Speaker 2: at record numbers. It's booming when it comes to our neighborhoods,
- 3:36Speaker 2: and I want that for downtown. And then we tell
- 3:39Speaker 2: the world this is the place to be and people
- 3:41Speaker 2: are getting the message. We have multiple towers being planned
- 3:45Speaker 2: for San Francisco, including one taller than the Salesforce Tower.
- 3:49Speaker 2: People are betting on San Francisco.
- 3:51Speaker 1: Again, may Lari off to the events of the weekend
- 3:54Speaker 1: in the past week. It's a fair question to ask
- 3:56Speaker 1: about how you are preparing or planning a stretch for
- 4:01Speaker 1: the idea of a National Guard deployment in the city
- 4:04Speaker 1: of San Francisco.
- 4:05Speaker 2: Your position, please, I can only control that I can control.
- 4:09Speaker 2: I want my police officers, I want my shriffes focused
- 4:12Speaker 2: on local crime in San Francisco is down thirty percent
- 4:17Speaker 2: this year. It's down forty percent in downtown. We're at
- 4:21Speaker 2: twenty two year lows in terms of car breakings. So
- 4:25Speaker 2: I'm focused on keeping people safe in San Francisco. Outside
- 4:29Speaker 2: of my control, I cannot. I can't get into that
- 4:33Speaker 2: because I can only control it.
- 4:35Speaker 1: Having discussed it with the.
- 4:36Speaker 2: Governor, for example, I have not, but we have planning
- 4:40Speaker 2: in place. We're always seeing what's going on. We're watching
- 4:44Speaker 2: what's happening in other cities, and we continue to have
- 4:46Speaker 2: planning sessions.
- 4:47Speaker 1: Finally, top of mind for San Franciscans and many people
- 4:52Speaker 1: across the country is redistricting. Have you had an opportunity
- 4:57Speaker 1: on your list of many things to consider.
- 5:00Speaker 2: Yeah, so I said personally, you know, I'm going to
- 5:02Speaker 2: be supporting. I'm not getting involved in any campaigns as
- 5:05Speaker 2: mayor of San Francisco. I'm getting involved in the campaign
- 5:09Speaker 2: to bring San Francisco back as the greatest city in
- 5:12Speaker 2: the world, the most beautiful city in the world, which
- 5:14Speaker 2: it is. Look outside today, it's close to eighty degrees.
- 5:18Speaker 2: We've got thousands of people here. This city is on
- 5:22Speaker 2: the rise, and I think everybody is starting to get
- 5:24Speaker 2: that message across the country and across the world.
