Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Ryan Bridge: Emotion has overcome facts on conservation
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Most Kiwis have an environmental bent to them that I
- 0:02Speaker 1: think most of the rest of the Western world just
- 0:04Speaker 1: doesn't have. Even those on the right of politics here
- 0:07Speaker 1: care about the oceans and the rivers and the lakes.
- 0:09Speaker 1: Matt Watson, which is not to say that people on
- 0:11Speaker 1: the right around the world don't, but there's a general vibe,
- 0:14Speaker 1: isn't there. Let's be real. Matt Watson and his million fishes.
- 0:18Speaker 1: They put Shane Jones, supposedly industry friendly fishing clauses in
- 0:21Speaker 1: the bin. A lot of them were Tories fishes. Now
- 0:26Speaker 1: the same has happened with Pawtucker and his conservation clauses.
- 0:30Speaker 1: In both cases, emotion I think overcame facts. I spoke
- 0:33Speaker 1: with Porwtarcker the day before he turned and he made
- 0:36Speaker 1: some pretty clear promises. No parks, no bushland, no great walks,
- 0:39Speaker 1: no protected species would be destroyed or sold off under
- 0:42Speaker 1: the bill. The problem was the door was left ajar
- 0:45Speaker 1: open for a future government to potentially sell bits of
- 0:48Speaker 1: conservation land. Anyone who thinks seriously that means a government
- 0:53Speaker 1: would sell Tonga at a national park to the highest
- 0:55Speaker 1: bidder is not serious or mad. They were. This is
- 1:00Speaker 1: at least according to Portucker Land with old, disused government
- 1:05Speaker 1: buildings or car parks, even on them in a state
- 1:07Speaker 1: of disrepair. Just flog them off, get them out of
- 1:10Speaker 1: off the books. However, they left the door Ajar and
- 1:14Speaker 1: opponents drove a truck through that whole Pawtucker looked like
- 1:19Speaker 1: a deer in headlights. They should have seen this coming,
- 1:22Speaker 1: especially after the fishing misstep. This is to say it'll
- 1:27Speaker 1: not to say I should say that it'll cost them votes.
- 1:29Speaker 1: I don't think it will. It just means there's a
- 1:31Speaker 1: perception out there. Isn't there. It's not necessarily true, but
- 1:35Speaker 1: there is a perception that not only are they not
- 1:38Speaker 1: for the environment is Portucker kept saying they are, but
- 1:42Speaker 1: that they might actually be against it. Whatever that vague
- 1:46Speaker 1: phrasing means, you can be sure the opposition will seize
- 1:49Speaker 1: on it. Clearly it resonates with quite a few Kiwi
