Transcript
- 0:02Speaker 1: Open up your pocketbook and put a few shuffles out there.
- 0:06Speaker 2: It's best question of the week. We like your questions
- 0:10Speaker 2: and you can ask us just about anything. Well, I
- 0:11Speaker 2: answered just about anything, but you have to email it
- 0:14Speaker 2: to us. Radio from Hell at X ninety six dot
- 0:17Speaker 2: com put the best question in the subject line, and
- 0:20Speaker 2: we got this one from Whitney. Whitney says, Hello lords,
- 0:24Speaker 2: thank you for letting me listen.
- 0:26Speaker 3: Hie Whitney, please help me make.
- 0:28Speaker 2: The math make sense. Your fortieth year anniversary party is
- 0:32Speaker 2: coming up. Can you please go over the timeline of
- 0:35Speaker 2: Radio from Hell? By my calculations, Gina would have been
- 0:38Speaker 2: ten years old when the show first.
- 0:40Speaker 3: Started, all your sweetness, No, Gina, you were twelve, weren't you.
- 0:44Speaker 2: I've been a longtime listener, so I should know all
- 0:46Speaker 2: of this information, but I can't recall. And maybe there
- 0:48Speaker 2: are others out there listening who are curious as well.
- 0:51Speaker 2: Stay care, Whitney.
- 0:53Speaker 3: So maybe we had to have Katie tell us.
- 0:56Speaker 1: I forget what year we decided to start it was it?
- 1:01Speaker 3: I think it was.
- 1:01Speaker 2: From the fortieth anniversary.
- 1:04Speaker 4: I think it was from when we first started working
- 1:06Speaker 4: together eighty.
- 1:07Speaker 3: Six, nineteen eighty six Carrie and I.
- 1:10Speaker 1: Yeah, and was that Radio from Hell that might have
- 1:15Speaker 1: not been?
- 1:17Speaker 2: You might have been You were fun pigs for a
- 1:19Speaker 2: minute there for a.
- 1:20Speaker 3: Couple of minutes. Yeah, we were. Essentially we became Radio
- 1:24Speaker 3: from Health pretty quick.
- 1:25Speaker 2: So forty years ago, I was sixteen and I was
- 1:28Speaker 2: in high school, and I was a fan of Carry
- 1:33Speaker 2: and Bill on the Radio from Hell show. I started. So,
- 1:38Speaker 2: it's the show's fortieth anniversary. It's my thirtieth anniversary.
- 1:42Speaker 1: Yes, And it's the fortieth anniversary of the show roughly.
- 1:46Speaker 1: I mean, we're not trying to hit the exact date.
- 1:49Speaker 1: It's just like sometime this year, within these within these
- 1:53Speaker 1: few months here this is it's forty years of doing it.
- 1:57Speaker 1: And that makes me feel really weird. I mean, it's
- 2:04Speaker 1: just I'll be honest.
- 2:06Speaker 4: Does all this talk about forty years it's made me tired.
- 2:11Speaker 3: Yeah. I can't figure it out.
- 2:13Speaker 4: Yeah, but whenever somebody starts talking about it, I get tired.
- 2:19Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:20Speaker 1: It's although it's interesting, I know what you're saying. And
- 2:23Speaker 1: I felt that way too when I'm not on the air.
- 2:26Speaker 1: But for some reason, I seem to have more energy
- 2:29Speaker 1: lately on the air that I've had in a long time,
- 2:32Speaker 1: and I don't know where that comes from either, because
- 2:34Speaker 1: I really should just lay down and give up.
- 2:37Speaker 2: I want to thank Pallick Jay's Wall from the Celtick Tribune.
- 2:42Speaker 2: She interviewed us a couple of weeks ago, and an
- 2:45Speaker 2: article that she wrote about the show is in the
- 2:49Speaker 2: Celtic Tribune online this morning. Sean Means today was saying
- 2:52Speaker 2: that it'll be in the print version. I think on
- 2:55Speaker 2: Sunday I posted a link on Twitter and Facebook if
- 3:00Speaker 2: you want to.
- 3:01Speaker 4: I think Katie's put it on all of our socials
- 3:03Speaker 4: and I put it on my Twitter and my Facebook.
- 3:07Speaker 3: You can read it.
- 3:08Speaker 1: But I guess that's the timeline. Is that all that
- 3:11Speaker 1: she wants to know? And then we're ending up here.
- 3:13Speaker 2: So I mean the timeline. You know, people might not
- 3:17Speaker 2: know that Carry and Bill and Radio from Hell started
- 3:20Speaker 2: at a different radio station. X ninety six is a
- 3:24Speaker 2: a morphing of that earlier started at KJQ in Ogden
- 3:31Speaker 2: and really crappy signals, and.
- 3:35Speaker 3: But there we were.
- 3:36Speaker 2: You used to have to if you wanted to keep
- 3:38Speaker 2: listening to KJQ. If you're driving from Ogden to Salt
- 3:42Speaker 2: Lake to Provo, you had to on your radio tune
- 3:48Speaker 2: it to a different frequency.
- 3:51Speaker 3: Depending on the count.
- 3:54Speaker 2: And believe it or not, people bothered to do that.
- 3:56Speaker 3: What did we say?
- 3:57Speaker 1: It was three lousy signals and one great radio station
- 4:00Speaker 1: or something something like that. And uh, what really has
- 4:05Speaker 1: sort of kicked Carrie and I into high gear or
- 4:11Speaker 1: exposed us was the introduced introduction of the what we
- 4:16Speaker 1: called at the time the modern music format. Yes, people
- 4:19Speaker 1: were crazy for it, uh. And it was very unique
- 4:25Speaker 1: and there was no you couldn't get that music anywhere
- 4:28Speaker 1: in Utah.
- 4:29Speaker 4: Well, the rest of the radio programmers were not playing
- 4:32Speaker 4: it because they didn't consider it mainstream enough.
- 4:34Speaker 2: Well, there were lots of not a lot of stations
- 4:36Speaker 2: in the country that we're doing, you know, there.
- 4:38Speaker 3: Were like four or five others. Yeah.
- 4:40Speaker 2: Uh.
- 4:41Speaker 1: And and the guy who owned the station at the time,
- 4:44Speaker 1: Tom Greenley, Thomas Valentine Greenley. How do you remember that, Thomas,
- 4:49Speaker 1: Because if his middle initial is V and it stands
- 4:52Speaker 1: for Valentine, how would you forget? I guess Anyway, he
- 4:56Speaker 1: saw that the people who listened to this kind of
- 5:00Speaker 1: music were rabbit for it, and he said, let's start
- 5:05Speaker 1: playing this exclusively. Let's play this music twenty four hours
- 5:08Speaker 1: a day and that's what sort of kicked Carry and
- 5:11Speaker 1: I in the ass and put us in front of them,
- 5:13Speaker 1: that rabid crowd who hated us at the first. At first, well,
- 5:16Speaker 1: there was.
- 5:17Speaker 4: A group there was a group of people who were
- 5:19Speaker 4: doing the modern music what was called modern music then
- 5:23Speaker 4: at a different radio station, and Tom said to them,
- 5:26Speaker 4: you know, they got kicked out of that station, I
- 5:28Speaker 4: think is what happened. Tom said to them, tell you what,
- 5:31Speaker 4: I'll rent you my airwaves from six pm to six am.
- 5:36Speaker 3: Kind of like what they're doing with Colbert's Time Slow, Yeah, exactly,
- 5:39Speaker 3: And they said, great, we'll take it.
- 5:41Speaker 4: And then Tom said, wow, he saw what was they're
- 5:44Speaker 4: doing really well, and so he says, I want to
- 5:46Speaker 4: do it twenty four hours a day. And the people
- 5:49Speaker 4: in charge of the modern music format said, well, you're
- 5:51Speaker 4: gonna have to fire all of your people.
- 5:53Speaker 3: You get rid of Carry and Bill. We can't have
- 5:54Speaker 3: them doing this.
- 5:55Speaker 4: And Tom said, I will get rid of all my
- 5:58Speaker 4: people except for the morning show, insist that they stay.
- 6:02Speaker 3: And that did not sit well.
- 6:04Speaker 1: I know, it's interesting to me that Tom had some
- 6:08Speaker 1: I guess he really thought we were something well.
- 6:11Speaker 4: I think that he felt that we were a little
- 6:14Speaker 4: bit more qualified slash skilled professional radio people, which is sort.
- 6:20Speaker 1: Of what they didn't what the people didn't. A lot
- 6:22Speaker 1: of people didn't like that we were a little more
- 6:26Speaker 1: But anyway, it didn't take too long for the audience
- 6:30Speaker 1: to kind of although there are still some people out there,
- 6:32Speaker 1: oh yeah, who used to go to the Ritz Club,
- 6:35Speaker 1: who still who if they if you were to ask them,
- 6:38Speaker 1: they'd say, I stopped listening the minute those guys came
- 6:41Speaker 1: on the air.
- 6:42Speaker 3: I hated years ago.
- 6:44Speaker 4: I hated the man, and I hate them now that
- 6:47Speaker 4: there are some members of that audience who do hold grudges.
- 6:51Speaker 1: Which is fine with me because I hold grudges too.
- 6:54Speaker 1: And and you know, we sort of went along and
- 6:57Speaker 1: it just got to be where I felt that we
- 7:01Speaker 1: were really just we were just kicking ass. We were
- 7:05Speaker 1: doing well, and then something came along that sort of
- 7:08Speaker 1: well busted up the party.
- 7:10Speaker 3: That's when the asshole from El Paso.
- 7:14Speaker 4: Yes, he came along, bought the place out. He was
- 7:18Speaker 4: a he was a silent partner of Tom's. Tom he
- 7:21Speaker 4: decided he was going to become a big partner and
- 7:24Speaker 4: ruined it. And I immediately was suspicious of him when
- 7:26Speaker 4: he said, look, I won't lie to you.
- 7:28Speaker 3: I'm a Christian. That's when I immediately and and I
- 7:31Speaker 3: want you to know. We're all family here. We're family.
- 7:34Speaker 3: That's what we are. We're family.
- 7:36Speaker 4: And he kind of ruined it because he brought in
- 7:39Speaker 4: other people and and then that's when everybody left.
- 7:42Speaker 2: But Carrie couldn't because he had the cancer.
- 7:44Speaker 4: I had the cancer and I needed the insurance, so
- 7:48Speaker 4: I had to stay.
- 7:49Speaker 2: We all we all left. I was working over and
- 7:52Speaker 2: I wasn't on the morning show. Then I was working
- 7:54Speaker 2: overnights at the.
- 7:55Speaker 3: Time I was.
- 7:56Speaker 1: I was the last one to leave because we're still
- 8:00Speaker 1: still doing the show with Kerry and these people outsiders
- 8:04Speaker 1: came to me and said, we want you to sign
- 8:06Speaker 1: a non compete and I said or, and they said or.
- 8:10Speaker 1: If you don't sign it, we'll fire you. And I said, okay,
- 8:16Speaker 1: fire me, and they did. It's the only time I've
- 8:19Speaker 1: ever been fired from a job in my life. And
- 8:21Speaker 1: they and I wanted them to fire me because I
- 8:24Speaker 1: wanted to be able to get unemployment and so I
- 8:27Speaker 1: started collecting unemployment and you know what, they called the
- 8:31Speaker 1: unemployment office and tried to claim that I was defrauding them,
- 8:35Speaker 1: and I had to go in and go to all
- 8:37Speaker 1: of these hearings.
- 8:38Speaker 3: Oh they were a vindictive bunch. They were awful, Yeah,
- 8:41Speaker 3: they really were so.
- 8:42Speaker 4: And then that's when Jim Facer said, well, we're just
- 8:46Speaker 4: gonna have to find someplace new. He was a sales manager, yeah,
- 8:49Speaker 4: and that's when he found some investors and ponied up
- 8:53Speaker 4: his own to buy it was K ninety six at
- 8:58Speaker 4: the time, and it and changed it.
- 9:01Speaker 3: And then then I started working there elapsed.
- 9:05Speaker 4: You started working there with Dom doing the morning and
- 9:07Speaker 4: that's when I went to ZHT and did mornings by myself.
- 9:11Speaker 2: I was on K Bear and Can I did sports
- 9:15Speaker 2: talk radio.
- 9:17Speaker 1: And then Dom Casual left and you know, I like Dom,
- 9:21Speaker 1: and it was we had a pretty good working relationship.
- 9:24Speaker 1: But he he left. He thought he had better opportunity
- 9:27Speaker 1: somewhere in the South, as I recall, and so I said,
- 9:31Speaker 1: who will we get to be on the morning show
- 9:32Speaker 1: with Bill? And everybody who worked for us at the
- 9:36Speaker 1: time wanted to do that, which surprised me. I mean,
- 9:40Speaker 1: Chad and Laura and they all wanted to do it. Yeah,
- 9:43Speaker 1: And I talked to all. Jim said, it's it's up
- 9:46Speaker 1: to you. It's up to you. You decide just talk
- 9:48Speaker 1: to him. So I talked to everybody individually and I
- 9:51Speaker 1: just felt kind of and then I said to Jim,
- 9:54Speaker 1: you know what, let's see if we can get Carrie
- 9:56Speaker 1: to come over from well.
- 9:58Speaker 4: I had heard about Dom leaving, and I immediately called
- 10:02Speaker 4: Jim and I said, Jim, it just makes sense that
- 10:06Speaker 4: I come back.
- 10:07Speaker 3: It just makes sense.
- 10:09Speaker 4: And he says, you know, Son, I understand that, but
- 10:13Speaker 4: everybody here hates you.
- 10:15Speaker 3: He said that, and it was true, and it was true. No,
- 10:19Speaker 3: it was true. Do you want to talk holding grudges?
- 10:21Speaker 1: Nobody liked Carrie? And when I said no, I didn't
- 10:25Speaker 1: know about that phone call. I just said to Jim,
- 10:28Speaker 1: we ought to get Carrie come back and he and
- 10:30Speaker 1: he said, are you sure that's what you want?
- 10:32Speaker 3: You know, everybody hates him. And she said.
- 10:35Speaker 4: They held grudges against me because I didn't walk and.
- 10:38Speaker 1: I said, I said, yes, that's that's what I that
- 10:42Speaker 1: is what I want.
- 10:43Speaker 3: And he said, well, okay, it's up to you. I
- 10:45Speaker 3: told you it was up to you. It's up to you. Yeah,
- 10:47Speaker 3: and uh. And so that's that's what happened.
- 10:50Speaker 1: Kerry and I maintained a little bit of a relationship
- 10:53Speaker 1: During that.
- 10:53Speaker 3: We were doing Smith and Edwards.
- 10:55Speaker 4: Yes, commercials and uh you'd come over to the HD
- 10:59Speaker 4: studios would produce those.
- 11:01Speaker 1: And uh so anyway, was that's how we got back,
- 11:03Speaker 1: and it was I think it was about almost two
- 11:05Speaker 1: years that we were uh not together and then it
- 11:09Speaker 1: came back and uh and I think everybody sort of
- 11:13Speaker 1: got used to carry No I just did they stop
- 11:17Speaker 1: hating you.
- 11:17Speaker 3: No, they still they still do the ones that are
- 11:20Speaker 3: still alive. Well it was a long time ago. Yes,
- 11:25Speaker 3: Well there you go. That's sort of the best question
- 11:28Speaker 3: a week and then it goes on from there. Yeah,
- 11:31Speaker 3: there's more to be continued, and we'll do it at
- 11:34Speaker 3: the Cafe Molise if you want.
