- 2:58Speaker 2: welcome to the show. Now, our Attorney General of the
- 3:00Speaker 2: Great State of wes Strogenia.
- 3:01Speaker 6: JB.
- 3:02Speaker 2: Mccusky, Good morning, Welcome to the show, sir.
- 3:05Speaker 7: Good morning, Dave, And we should probably start by talking
- 3:08Speaker 7: a little bit about all of our fellow West Virginians
- 3:11Speaker 7: that are really struggling this morning, and you know, really
- 3:14Speaker 7: for the last week all over the state. I mean,
- 3:16Speaker 7: it's there's some tough, tough spots out there, and you know,
- 3:19Speaker 7: our thoughts and prayers are with everybody out there. But
- 3:22Speaker 7: the you know, we've talked about this before. These kind
- 3:25Speaker 7: of disasters bring the frausters out right.
- 3:29Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I mean we see it unfortunately, and I
- 3:32Speaker 2: haven't had any reports of any yet. Your office may have,
- 3:35Speaker 2: I don't know, but anytime we have this situation like this,
- 3:38Speaker 2: they come out and we just want folks to be
- 3:40Speaker 2: vigilant about it. What are some of the things that
- 3:43Speaker 2: examples maybe in the past, not that we want to
- 3:45Speaker 2: give anybody any ideas or anything, but in the past,
- 3:47Speaker 2: some of the things that that your office has seen
- 3:49Speaker 2: when it comes to situations like this.
- 3:51Speaker 7: Yeah, I think the first and most important thing is,
- 3:55Speaker 7: you know, if it feels weird, it probably is. And
- 3:59Speaker 7: you know, our instinct is West Virginians is to be
- 4:02Speaker 7: trusting and to believe in sort of the goodness of
- 4:05Speaker 7: other people. And the problem with that instinct is particularly
- 4:08Speaker 7: an instances where people are suffering, where people are desperate,
- 4:13Speaker 7: that desperation can lead to really bad decision making. Always
- 4:19Speaker 7: check with the Better Business Bureau, Check with the Secretary
- 4:21Speaker 7: of State, Check with our office. Anytime you have contractors
- 4:25Speaker 7: that are going door to door, anytime you are receiving
- 4:27Speaker 7: phone calls about loan options, anytime somebody's calling you saying
- 4:32Speaker 7: they're from FEMA, anybody who's calling and saying you know,
- 4:34Speaker 7: they have some great solution for what your problem that
- 4:38Speaker 7: has befallen you only in the last couple of days.
- 4:41Speaker 7: Be vigilant about that. And when something feels like a scam,
- 4:45Speaker 7: there's a pretty good chance that it probably is one.
- 4:48Speaker 7: You can report that to our office. We have people
- 4:51Speaker 7: whose job it is specifically to make sure that our
- 4:54Speaker 7: West Virginia consumers are protected and taken care of. But
- 4:59Speaker 7: just be safe out there. And you know, I'm a
- 5:02Speaker 7: Harrison County guy. I saw the flooding that was happening
- 5:05Speaker 7: up there. It looks like the Bridgeport Athletic facility at
- 5:09Speaker 7: the high School is underwater and one of our beloved restaurants,
- 5:13Speaker 7: all of areas over there in Bridgeport is having some
- 5:15Speaker 7: real troubles too. So everybody in Harrison County, all across
- 5:18Speaker 7: the state, you know, our prayers are with you. If
- 5:20Speaker 7: there's anything the AG's Office can do, let us know.
- 5:23Speaker 7: And if you get any an inkling that there might
- 5:25Speaker 7: be somebody trying to scam our good hearted neighbors, please
- 5:29Speaker 7: give us a call and let us let us find
- 5:30Speaker 7: them and get rid of them.
- 5:31Speaker 2: And we want to make sure that people realize this
- 5:33Speaker 2: doesn't mean people that come up I mean face in
- 5:36Speaker 2: West Virginia where all as you said, you're a Harrison
- 5:39Speaker 2: County guy. You know, I live at Putnam County, Logan County.
- 5:41Speaker 2: By nature, what we know our neighbors, you know, that's
- 5:46Speaker 2: the thing. And when you have somebody that just shows
- 5:49Speaker 2: up that maybe at your house that you've never seen
- 5:52Speaker 2: in the neighborhood before, maybe a truck or van that
- 5:54Speaker 2: you don't recognize, and look, they may have the best
- 5:56Speaker 2: of intentions, but it's real simple to find out if
- 5:59Speaker 2: they're if they're in good standing. As you mentioned the
- 6:01Speaker 2: Secretary of State's Office, that's a great website you can
- 6:03Speaker 2: go to to make sure these it's just a business
- 6:05Speaker 2: in good standing in West Virginia, because if they're a
- 6:07Speaker 2: reputable business JB, then they're going to be on there.
- 6:11Speaker 7: Yeah, and that applies to charities too. There's a lot
- 6:14Speaker 7: of people in most Virginia who weren't affected by this
- 6:16Speaker 7: flooding who are going to try to help their their
- 6:18Speaker 7: their neighbors, and you know, make sure that when you're
- 6:22Speaker 7: giving money, you're giving it to UH, you're giving it
- 6:25Speaker 7: to a reputable place. And you know, the Red Cross
- 6:28Speaker 7: is a really great place to start if you're just
- 6:31Speaker 7: looking looking for a way to help. Make sure you're
- 6:33Speaker 7: giving your money to somebody who's going to take that
- 6:36Speaker 7: money and h and use it wisely. We learned this
- 6:38Speaker 7: lesson in the auditor's office in spades during during the
- 6:42Speaker 7: first set of flooding down in Greenbrier and Summers and
- 6:46Speaker 7: Nicholas and Faya Counties. You know, there were millions of
- 6:50Speaker 7: dollars given that were never appropriately given to the people
- 6:54Speaker 7: UH in you know, places like rich Wood. So just
- 6:57Speaker 7: be vigilant. If you're going to be generous, please be generous,
- 7:00Speaker 7: but please do so in a smart way and make
- 7:02Speaker 7: sure your money's going to somebodyho's actually gonna help one
- 7:04Speaker 7: of us.
- 7:04Speaker 2: We're talking again with Attorney General Jimmy McCuskey to Dave
- 7:07Speaker 2: Island Show and five Any Line brought to you and
- 7:08Speaker 2: part by the Charleston Dirty Birds. Birds are on the
- 7:10Speaker 2: road all this week taking on Gastonian their back at
- 7:13Speaker 2: Gomart Ballpark, though next Tuesday started a series against Lancaster.
- 7:16Speaker 2: Visit dirty Birds Baseball dot com. From information, I'm going
- 7:19Speaker 2: take a look at a case that your office was
- 7:22Speaker 2: involved in. A federal court has struck down a bill,
- 7:26Speaker 2: and if I understand this correctly, so Congress reduced a
- 7:31Speaker 2: two hundred dollars tax on gun silencers, short barreled rifles, shotguns,
- 7:38Speaker 2: et cetera, to zero as part of the Big Beautiful Bill.
- 7:41Speaker 2: It did, however, keep a lot of the paperwork like
- 7:44Speaker 2: photographs and fingerprint requirements, et cetera, in your office in
- 7:48Speaker 2: other states had a problem with that. Do I have
- 7:50Speaker 2: that correct? Yeah.
- 7:52Speaker 7: So the only way that Congress is allowed to regulate
- 7:55Speaker 7: in the area that we're talking about, which is, you know,
- 7:59Speaker 7: certain kinds of fire and certain firearms accessories which are
- 8:02Speaker 7: otherwise legal, is through their taxing authority. And once the
- 8:06Speaker 7: tax was taken down to zero, which, as you accurately mentioned,
- 8:10Speaker 7: happened in the Big Beautiful Bill. It became unconstitutional for
- 8:15Speaker 7: the ATF, in our opinion, to continue to require that
- 8:19Speaker 7: level of paperwork and registration, et cetera, because this came,
- 8:23Speaker 7: you know, sort of as part of a wholly separate
- 8:26Speaker 7: piece of legislation a judge in Texas per the prompting
- 8:31Speaker 7: of the lead tech. The lead state here was Texas, Kansas,
- 8:35Speaker 7: West Virginia, Montana, where all major players and getting this
- 8:39Speaker 7: done has enjoined that regulatory scheme as it applies to
- 8:44Speaker 7: the ATF. What we don't know yet and what we
- 8:46Speaker 7: are working on, is how wide that injunction in terms
- 8:52Speaker 7: of what this regulation does applies across the country, but
- 8:56Speaker 7: for us specifically here in West Virginia. What we know
- 8:59Speaker 7: is that discipline to the named plaintiffs, which would be
- 9:03Speaker 7: the government of West Virginia, as well as members of
- 9:05Speaker 7: the interest groups that were involved. We are working diligently
- 9:09Speaker 7: with our partner states as well as with the federal
- 9:11Speaker 7: government to get some clarity on what this injunction means
- 9:14Speaker 7: right now. But our advice to everybody Number one is
- 9:19Speaker 7: a huge victory for the second Amendment. But number two
- 9:21Speaker 7: is to continue to follow follow the guidance of the ATF.
- 9:24Speaker 7: It doesn't make any sense to martyr yourself to put
- 9:27Speaker 7: yourself in jeopardy until we have some real answers as
- 9:31Speaker 7: to how widespread this injunction flows.
- 9:35Speaker 2: So what else is keeping you busy these days? Attorney General?
- 9:39Speaker 2: You've been out on the road, you've been what do
- 9:40Speaker 2: you what you been doing here lately?
- 9:41Speaker 7: We're doing all kinds of stuff. You know, we have
- 9:44Speaker 7: this great, big case against Apple. We've had, we won
- 9:48Speaker 7: a good victory in the federal courts over there in Huntington,
- 9:52Speaker 7: keeping that case in West Virginia State court. You know,
- 9:55Speaker 7: we've talked about this before, but Apple is harboring hundreds
- 9:59Speaker 7: of millions, if not billions, of images of child rape,
- 10:02Speaker 7: child sexual exploitation, and we are holding them to account
- 10:06Speaker 7: so that we can hopefully give our law enforcement partners
- 10:09Speaker 7: the ability to get a hold of those images and
- 10:11Speaker 7: find the monsters who are who are keeping them and
- 10:14Speaker 7: selling them and using them to exploit children. We continue
- 10:17Speaker 7: at our fight against the pharmacy benefit managers, who we
- 10:21Speaker 7: believe contributed mightily to the opioid crisis. We have, you know,
- 10:26Speaker 7: we have several hearings coming up on those, but we
- 10:28Speaker 7: feel really good about those cases, and we just continue
- 10:31Speaker 7: the fight to hopefully get permitting reform done. In Congress.
- 10:36Speaker 7: We've been fighting to get the Protect College Sports Act
- 10:39Speaker 7: across the line. Our office worked very very closely with
- 10:42Speaker 7: Senator Cruz and Senator Schmidt to try to get a
- 10:45Speaker 7: vote on that bill last or two weeks ago. I
- 10:48Speaker 7: guess unfortunately that did not happen. It appears that we
- 10:51Speaker 7: have a vote on that coming in the in the
- 10:53Speaker 7: September term when they come back. That's an incredibly important
- 10:58Speaker 7: bill for the colleges here in West Virginia, specifically Marshall
- 11:01Speaker 7: and WVU. If this NIL system doesn't get fixed, what
- 11:07Speaker 7: we're going to find is the sort of mid sized
- 11:09Speaker 7: state schools like Marshall and WU are we'll be in
- 11:12Speaker 7: real trouble. And that trouble really flows into particularly women's
- 11:17Speaker 7: sports as well as the Olympic sports that don't generate
- 11:20Speaker 7: too much revenue, but those are very important things to
- 11:23Speaker 7: the people of West Virginia and we want to make
- 11:24Speaker 7: sure that every woman and girl here in the state
- 11:27Speaker 7: has the opportunity to participate in high end college athletics.
- 11:31Speaker 7: At one of our two premier universities here in the state.
- 11:34Speaker 2: And of course you got a couple of young ladies
- 11:36Speaker 2: that you're trying to get ready to start school. I
- 11:38Speaker 2: guess right, did they already started?
- 11:39Speaker 7: I do tomorrow. Tomorrow's our first day at school. Yesterday
- 11:43Speaker 7: was one of those crazy days as a parent and
- 11:45Speaker 7: all the parents out there who have a couple of
- 11:47Speaker 7: kids in school. We had we had an open house
- 11:50Speaker 7: at the elementary school. Then we had our first ever
- 11:52Speaker 7: open house at the junior high school where my daughter goes.
- 11:57Speaker 7: So she's starting middle school, which is terrifying. I didn't
- 11:59Speaker 7: have any kids when I first got elected, and now
- 12:01Speaker 7: I have one that's in middle school. We have middle
- 12:03Speaker 7: school soccer, so that's happening every day, it feels like
- 12:07Speaker 7: twice a day. But the Lady Falcons are going to
- 12:10Speaker 7: kick some butt this year, and we're really proud of
- 12:11Speaker 7: our daughter for making the team.
- 12:13Speaker 2: Got got to get that plug in for the team, right,
- 12:16Speaker 2: you know, for the Lady Falcons.
- 12:17Speaker 7: You know what you know? It's it is. I am
- 12:19Speaker 7: a loyal fan of anything that my children are doing,
- 12:22Speaker 7: and so I will be the lead booster for the
- 12:24Speaker 7: Lady Falcons to season.
- 12:25Speaker 2: Just don't just don't get kicked out of a game
- 12:26Speaker 2: or something. Okay, you's a very quiet parent.
- 12:29Speaker 5: I don't.
- 12:30Speaker 7: I don't yell and scream at the games because you know,
- 12:33Speaker 7: I learned a long time ago that your kids want
- 12:36Speaker 7: you to be there, but they don't want to hear you.
- 12:38Speaker 7: And the best, the best strategy for a parent is
- 12:41Speaker 7: to let your coaches coach your kids, tell them you're
- 12:43Speaker 7: proud of them when they get done, and if they
- 12:45Speaker 7: want to talk about the things they need to do
- 12:47Speaker 7: to get better. It's always it's always better when your
- 12:49Speaker 7: kids chooses to do that on their own.
- 12:51Speaker 2: Triney General JB. Mccowsky, appreciate you being here. We'll talk
- 12:54Speaker 2: against the man. Thanks a lot.
- 12:55Speaker 7: Hey, you know what, that actually is a good plug
- 12:57Speaker 7: for everybody. School sports are starting. Don't don't be a
- 13:00Speaker 7: jerk as a parent. Don't yell at the referees, don't
- 13:03Speaker 7: yell at your kids. Coach, be a great parent, enjoy
- 13:06Speaker 7: this time with your kids. It is so much more
- 13:09Speaker 7: fun to be a fan than it is to be
- 13:12Speaker 7: an active participant in the officiating of the games that
- 13:15Speaker 7: you're watching. These officials aren't getting paid very much. We're
- 13:18Speaker 7: grateful to all of them, so you know, be as
- 13:20Speaker 7: kind to them as you possibly can be.
- 13:22Speaker 2: But that's a good way to put it. You're a
- 13:23Speaker 2: regular after school special, you know that.
- 13:25Speaker 1: Yeah, And you know what, the more you know, JB.
- 13:29Speaker 2: Because you appreciate you being here. Man, thanks a lot.
- 13:31Speaker 7: All right, Thanks.
- 13:32Speaker 2: But WRC Media Cares for Kids Radio Thon is happening

- 16:57Speaker 2: Now kadonk Anti Commissioned President Ben Selango. Good morning, Sarah,
- 17:00Speaker 2: Welcome to the show. Good morning, thanks for having me on.
- 17:02Speaker 2: Start with the flooding over the weekend City of Charleston,
- 17:05Speaker 2: onward to you know, Cabin Creek and so many other
- 17:09Speaker 2: areas that we're hit and are still still doing a
- 17:12Speaker 2: lot of clean up and will be for some time.
- 17:14Speaker 2: Then we're we're doing it.
- 17:14Speaker 9: We're having a meeting this morning about doing a clean
- 17:17Speaker 9: up for Cross Lanes and also in the Upper Knaw Valley,
- 17:20Speaker 9: you know, Campbell's Creek, Cabin Creek, Paint Creek, those areas,
- 17:24Speaker 9: so we'll have more information out typically what we'll do
- 17:27Speaker 9: in a situation like that. We can't have dump sites
- 17:30Speaker 9: because DP has to get involved. It takes a lot,
- 17:34Speaker 9: you know, there's a lot of red tape and paperwork.
- 17:37Speaker 9: So we'll do curbside so as long as down we
- 17:40Speaker 9: can't enter private property. But if you put it out
- 17:42Speaker 9: by the road, raay. So we're working on that plan.
- 17:45Speaker 2: That is a very thank you for bringing that up
- 17:47Speaker 2: because we just dealt with this in Upshur County and
- 17:50Speaker 2: Lewis County. You had to any time we have one
- 17:52Speaker 2: of these situations, we have to try to you know,
- 17:54Speaker 2: make sure people understand they you know, the crews cannot
- 17:57Speaker 2: come on private property. They are forbidden by law from
- 18:00Speaker 2: coming on private property. So when the time is right,
- 18:03Speaker 2: and we'll give you the information as to when it's
- 18:05Speaker 2: going to happen, you got to bring that stuff to
- 18:07Speaker 2: the curb.
- 18:08Speaker 9: Yeah, that's that's a pain. It's a you know, dragging
- 18:12Speaker 9: out wet stuff. It's heavy. Yeah, but we can't go.
- 18:15Speaker 5: To your porch.
- 18:16Speaker 9: You have to take it to the curb by law.
- 18:18Speaker 9: So anyway, so that's the plan, and we should have
- 18:21Speaker 9: the routes and times and days and everything. I've also
- 18:24Speaker 9: inquired about whether we can get these you know, these
- 18:27Speaker 9: mass of like thirty forty qbic yard dumpsters and set
- 18:30Speaker 9: them in various locations and crossings. We're working on that too.
- 18:33Speaker 9: I don't have any finalized plans for that. So that's
- 18:36Speaker 9: kind of the that's what we're doing right now in
- 18:38Speaker 9: terms of cleanup. But the information that I received this
- 18:42Speaker 9: morning actually was last night. It was the highest rain
- 18:47Speaker 9: total that had been recorded at Yager Airport since July
- 18:50Speaker 9: nineteenth of nineteen sixty one, four point two three inches
- 18:54Speaker 9: of rain. The record was five point six inches back
- 18:59Speaker 9: in July nineteen sixty one. So you know, it's been
- 19:01Speaker 9: sixty some years since Charleston has seen this type of
- 19:06Speaker 9: weather event rainfall. I mean, we've had dray shows, yeah, events,
- 19:10Speaker 9: But most areas in Kinnaw County received two to four
- 19:12Speaker 9: inches of rain throughout the day, and of course, you know,
- 19:16Speaker 9: we've highlighted the ones that were most hit. We had
- 19:20Speaker 9: twenty one hundred emergency calls come in through dispatch. Eight
- 19:25Speaker 9: hundred and fifty of those calls first responders were dispatched
- 19:30Speaker 9: sixty water rescues. Think about that, sixty water rescues. So
- 19:34Speaker 9: and by the way, that would not have been possible
- 19:36Speaker 9: with the fire Department. The City of Charleston and the
- 19:39Speaker 9: City of South Charleston. Thank you because they pitched in.
- 19:42Speaker 9: They helped us with water rescues in the Upper Canal Valley.
- 19:46Speaker 9: Otherwise we wouldn't have been able to get to the mall.
- 19:48Speaker 9: We had over forty vehicle accidents and one hundred and
- 19:51Speaker 9: fifty service calls, trees down, gas leaks, those types of things.
- 19:56Speaker 9: As of this morning, we've got four thousand and seventy
- 19:59Speaker 9: eight peep without power. AP is working to restore. The
- 20:03Speaker 9: goal is this afternoon to this evening, everyone should have
- 20:06Speaker 9: power and unless something's changed. Since I've checked the weather
- 20:11Speaker 9: this morning, I think we're going to have a dry day.
- 20:15Speaker 9: Maybe a little rain on Thursday, but I think we're
- 20:17Speaker 9: good for a couple of days.
- 20:18Speaker 2: Yeah, well, that's that's certainly good news. I want to
- 20:20Speaker 2: get this info out there too, Ben. The Martin Luther
- 20:23Speaker 2: King Community Center on Donelly Street is accepting flood recovery items.
- 20:27Speaker 2: The typical things bottled water, disinfectants, cleaners, fans, dehumidifiers, buckets, shovels,
- 20:34Speaker 2: heavy duty trash bags, paper towels, work gloves, et cetera,
- 20:37Speaker 2: et cetera. Also yesterday on midday, we interviewed someone from
- 20:40Speaker 2: the KANASS Starting Points Family Supports Center and they're accepting
- 20:45Speaker 2: items too.
- 20:46Speaker 13: Now.
- 20:46Speaker 2: They are at one two four oh four mccorkol Avenue
- 20:49Speaker 2: in Chesapeake. And today starting noon, that group is going
- 20:52Speaker 2: to be setting up at Sharon Dawes to hand out
- 20:54Speaker 2: supplies and to offer lunch and ben You know, so
- 20:57Speaker 2: many groups like that, churches said are all trying to
- 21:01Speaker 2: help out. Also, the Kanal Charleston Health Department giving out
- 21:04Speaker 2: tetanus and heaping titus shots starting at ten thirty today,
- 21:07Speaker 2: they'll be on Garrison Avenue, Sugar Creek Drive starting at
- 21:11Speaker 2: around two thirty an all day at the Health Department
- 21:13Speaker 2: one to wait Lee Street East in Charleston. So so
- 21:16Speaker 2: many people coming together. Yeah, and we appreciate everything they're doing.
- 21:19Speaker 9: You know, that's important if you're out, you know, the
- 21:21Speaker 9: people that are working in this flood and trying to
- 21:23Speaker 9: clean out their homes, they get cut or nicked or pope.
- 21:25Speaker 2: Yeah, you got to make sure you say it all
- 21:28Speaker 2: the time Man to understatement of the year. Floods are
- 21:30Speaker 2: nasty there. I mean, now, it's not just the water,
- 21:34Speaker 2: I mean it's the afterwards, yes, and the injuries that come,
- 21:38Speaker 2: as you said, from that sort of stuff and them
- 21:41Speaker 2: old and the milldew and you know, and people a
- 21:44Speaker 2: lot of people don't feel safe. I mean, we had
- 21:46Speaker 2: a lady that emailed, she emailed me last night around
- 21:49Speaker 2: midnight and she said this is the fifth time that
- 21:51Speaker 2: she's had water around her house and she's only lived
- 21:53Speaker 2: in Campbell's Creek since twenty twenty two. So we're looking
- 21:57Speaker 2: at some other things. We're looking at and hopefully we'll
- 22:01Speaker 2: be up and announce this soon. But we're looking at
- 22:03Speaker 2: some some programs at the state and the Feds offer
- 22:06Speaker 2: to maybe help some folks, you know, because their property
- 22:10Speaker 2: values are not what they should be because of all
- 22:14Speaker 2: the flooding out. So we're gonna we're gonna look at
- 22:16Speaker 2: some programs to maybe help them out. And will you
- 22:18Speaker 2: hear the term, you know, whether people say emergency alert,
- 22:21Speaker 2: will say in the usual low lying areas, and it
- 22:24Speaker 2: happens all over the country. It's not just you know,
- 22:26Speaker 2: Ikanah County type thing. You know, where if you're from
- 22:29Speaker 2: a different county. You know where those areas are in
- 22:31Speaker 2: your county. But it does seem like that lady who's
- 22:34Speaker 2: been flooded five times since twenty twenty two, is that
- 22:36Speaker 2: which one? That's what she said in the email. Yeah,
- 22:38Speaker 2: all right, so I mean something's got to be there's Yeah,
- 22:41Speaker 2: there's there's an issue there. I mean, there is an issue.
- 22:43Speaker 2: You know, you only go do so much with mother nature.
- 22:45Speaker 2: I mean when you get the floody. I mean we
- 22:47Speaker 2: saw we interviewed the Chuck Smith after day for the
- 22:52Speaker 2: Turnpike Authority Parks Authority about that issue that they had
- 22:55Speaker 2: on the turnpike. When you have that much rain, there's
- 22:58Speaker 2: only so much you can do. But there are some
- 23:00Speaker 2: things that could be done. And we have a couple
- 23:02Speaker 2: of text about that. But yeah, well and we're looking
- 23:04Speaker 2: at that. You know, we started a flood mitigation program
- 23:07Speaker 2: where we were looking at culverts and creeks and we
- 23:11Speaker 2: were we've actually and work working with highways too to
- 23:14Speaker 2: try to clear out some of the brush that had
- 23:18Speaker 2: been accumulating in the culverts and and that's been successful
- 23:23Speaker 2: and we've been doing that for about a year. We
- 23:25Speaker 2: were actually getting ready to do an update on it,
- 23:27Speaker 2: but just kind of a progress update and then this happened.
- 23:32Speaker 2: But you know, people have called about vegetation in the
- 23:36Speaker 2: creeks and you know, trees in the creeks and things
- 23:39Speaker 2: like that, and that's that's a lot of that's a
- 23:41Speaker 2: lot of the problem. You know, it gets backed up,
- 23:43Speaker 2: and so we're definitely paying attention to that.
- 23:46Speaker 1: We try.
- 23:46Speaker 9: You know, there's there's a limit on what the county
- 23:50Speaker 9: is allowed to do anything that involves a stream or
- 23:52Speaker 9: a river, a creek that it's it's federal, you know,
- 23:56Speaker 9: that's the county can't just go in there with the
- 23:58Speaker 9: bulldozer and dredge it. Yeah, although you know a lot
- 24:02Speaker 9: of people were commenting that we should, but we simply can't.
- 24:05Speaker 9: So we have to work with the feds. We have
- 24:07Speaker 9: to work with the state anytime we want to do
- 24:08Speaker 9: something like.
- 24:09Speaker 2: That, Texas, we want to stay to take our tax
- 24:11Speaker 2: dollars and clean every stream and ditches in the state.
- 24:14Speaker 2: We don't care what it costs. It's our money, doesn't
- 24:16Speaker 2: belong to the politician. That's true.
- 24:19Speaker 9: It's definitely not the politician's money. It's not my money.
- 24:22Speaker 9: And we've got to do some dredging and there was
- 24:25Speaker 9: and I've seen some photographs some of these bridges. I mean,
- 24:29Speaker 9: you get so much sediment accumulating under the bridges, whether
- 24:33Speaker 9: they're private or public, and there's.
- 24:35Speaker 2: No clearance space under them.
- 24:37Speaker 9: And so we actually have worked with the federal government
- 24:40Speaker 9: and the state to go in and clean out underneath
- 24:42Speaker 9: a lot of those. And we've got some before and
- 24:44Speaker 9: after pictures that we were going to do on our
- 24:46Speaker 9: update that shows some of the progress. I mean, we've
- 24:49Speaker 9: actually cleaned it out a lot, but once those get clogged,
- 24:52Speaker 9: I mean, everything's backed up from there.
- 24:54Speaker 2: Texts for Ben, what about a type of program where
- 24:56Speaker 2: the county works with different businesses or cleaning companies to
- 24:59Speaker 2: do something like maybe rent out or sign out, borrow
- 25:02Speaker 2: or loan things like sub pumps or power washers to
- 25:05Speaker 2: people that don't have these or normally don't flood this badly.
- 25:08Speaker 2: West Virginian's working together.
- 25:11Speaker 9: Yeah, I think there are some nonprofits that do that,
- 25:14Speaker 9: but yeah, certainly I wouldn't mind working with with them
- 25:17Speaker 9: to get those out. You know, we've got to make
- 25:18Speaker 9: sure we would be able to get them back is
- 25:21Speaker 9: the big issue, you know, But uh, I know that
- 25:25Speaker 9: that's always a big knee. The pressure washers and the
- 25:27Speaker 9: cleaning supplies and pumps and wet vacs, you know. But
- 25:32Speaker 9: it's uh, two nights ago when when the rain was going,
- 25:36Speaker 9: I was down in the basement with a wet fact
- 25:38Speaker 9: trying to clear out my basement too. I mean we
- 25:40Speaker 9: were getting you know, just lots and lots of water
- 25:42Speaker 9: in it. So, I mean I understand it's it's uh
- 25:47Speaker 9: and it you know now it stinks. Yeah, you know,
- 25:50Speaker 9: I've got to do you menifire down there trying to
- 25:52Speaker 9: make it smell better. But it's a it's a it's
- 25:54Speaker 9: a problem. And these people they're having their whole houses flooded. Yeah, cars, houses, everything.
- 25:59Speaker 9: We U I'll have to show you this during a break.
- 26:01Speaker 9: Somebody texted in a video here and I'll just read
- 26:04Speaker 9: the text and you can look at it during the break.
- 26:05Speaker 9: So as I called the county about this a few
- 26:07Speaker 9: months ago, nothing's been done. Guthrie rode off Route twenty
- 26:11Speaker 9: one north of Charleston.
- 26:13Speaker 2: Yeah, show me the video. I'll have to show it
- 26:14Speaker 2: to you during the break. I'll have to show it
- 26:16Speaker 2: to you. Yeah.
- 26:16Speaker 9: Well, obviously a lot of those calls don't come directly me,
- 26:19Speaker 9: but they'll go to planning. And if we get a
- 26:21Speaker 9: call and I get you know, I get messages too.
- 26:24Speaker 9: People email me or they'll text me or reach out
- 26:27Speaker 9: on social media. I don't see all them, but if
- 26:31Speaker 9: I get them, then I send them to planning and
- 26:33Speaker 9: then we try to come up with a plan. I mean,
- 26:34Speaker 9: we have an issue right now out in cross Lanes
- 26:37Speaker 9: that we're working on. We've got a few others that
- 26:40Speaker 9: we're working on through planning, and but yeah, show if
- 26:43Speaker 9: I can get the address in the video, I'll look
- 26:45Speaker 9: at it all.
- 26:45Speaker 2: I will show you that you're in a break. So
- 26:47Speaker 2: what was the deal? Setting social media ablaze yesterday evening?
- 26:51Speaker 2: I kind of got in on this late, and I mean,
- 26:54Speaker 2: you want to clarify what happened?
- 26:57Speaker 9: Well, you know, it really started and this goes on
- 27:00Speaker 9: quite a bit and and I don't really I haven't
- 27:03Speaker 9: really said much about it, but I think a lot
- 27:04Speaker 9: of the first responders have been frustrated, particularly when you
- 27:08Speaker 9: look back at the institute the chemical incident. It's been
- 27:12Speaker 9: a couple months. I've lost track of time now, but
- 27:14Speaker 9: you know, we had a lot of misinformation. When you're
- 27:18Speaker 9: dealing with a situation like that. What was the situation.
- 27:21Speaker 9: Let's catch people at well, it was the it was
- 27:24Speaker 9: the reaction, the chemical reaction in one of the plants.
- 27:27Speaker 2: We had, you know, a loss of life.
- 27:30Speaker 9: I know we're talking about yesterday. Oh yesterday yesterday was
- 27:33Speaker 9: what was what was rumored? Oh, people were saying that
- 27:36Speaker 9: a dam in the Upperkanav Valley was going to break. Well,
- 27:40Speaker 9: that's the marmad damn. I mean, if you're talking about
- 27:42Speaker 9: a dam in the Africans about now, I think what
- 27:44Speaker 9: they meant was a coal mine might blow out. But
- 27:46Speaker 9: that's not what they were posting. They were saying, a
- 27:48Speaker 9: dam's going to break, we need to evacuate.
- 27:49Speaker 2: Well that's.
- 27:51Speaker 9: If you don't have an evacuation plan, don't post that
- 27:54Speaker 9: people should evacuate. Because what happened was it sent panic.
- 27:58Speaker 9: So people thought the Marmette was going to blow People thought, now,
- 28:01Speaker 9: people up in that area up and you know Campbell's
- 28:04Speaker 9: Creek and all, they knew that there was water coming
- 28:06Speaker 9: out of a mine and they were worried that the
- 28:08Speaker 9: mine might blow out. But if there's water coming out
- 28:10Speaker 9: of and then hopefully there's no pressure back up, you know,
- 28:13Speaker 9: And that's what the mind inspectors were telling us but
- 28:15Speaker 9: one of the reasons I did that was based upon
- 28:18Speaker 9: some of the social media posts regarding the institute incident,
- 28:23Speaker 9: where they were reporting, you know, multiple fatalities and hundreds
- 28:26Speaker 9: injured and you need to evacuate around and they were
- 28:30Speaker 9: and it was people that didn't have any information. They
- 28:32Speaker 9: were basically relying on rumor and creating panic and it
- 28:36Speaker 9: was just unnecessary. And I remember I was sitting at
- 28:39Speaker 9: the I was in EOC and we had these people
- 28:42Speaker 9: that were doing Facebook lives and pretending like they had
- 28:46Speaker 9: this inside information from inside the plant. They didn't. It
- 28:48Speaker 9: was all made up. And you know, we were on
- 28:53Speaker 9: the phone with the hospitals and family members of these
- 28:56Speaker 9: plant were we go back to the institute. Yeah, inst
- 28:58Speaker 9: They were running from hospital hospital trying to find their
- 29:00Speaker 9: family members, and these influencers were on there telling saying
- 29:03Speaker 9: that you know, people had died, like talking about like
- 29:06Speaker 9: fatal the number of fatalities, which was completely an act.
- 29:09Speaker 9: And then there were there were two We're not trying
- 29:10Speaker 9: to diminish that name, but it wasn't the facility. It
- 29:13Speaker 9: wasn't on that date.
- 29:14Speaker 2: I remember it well.
- 29:15Speaker 9: It wasn't a situation that was being reported on social media.
- 29:18Speaker 9: So when you do that, you know, I had I
- 29:20Speaker 9: had a professor in law school, Frank Cleckley. It was
- 29:23Speaker 9: a legend in the Supreme Court too, but he used
- 29:26Speaker 9: to say, you know, once once that's out there, it's
- 29:28Speaker 9: like trying to put toothpaste back in the tube. It's
- 29:30Speaker 9: just impossible. And so people get that, they panic. It
- 29:32Speaker 9: happened yesterday as well, people demanding or saying there's evacuations,
- 29:37Speaker 9: and so I just wanted to remind people that you
- 29:40Speaker 9: need to get your news from a trusted source.
- 29:44Speaker 14: Uh.
- 29:44Speaker 9: I promise you that nine to one one knows about
- 29:47Speaker 9: an emergency before your local influencer does. I promise you
- 29:51Speaker 9: that because the people call nine one one, they don't
- 29:53Speaker 9: call the influencer down the street. And that's the way
- 29:56Speaker 9: it works. So then they accumulate all that information and
- 29:58Speaker 9: we disseminated base step on whether or not there's an
- 30:02Speaker 9: actual risk. And so at that time, we had we
- 30:06Speaker 9: knew that the mind had been inspected, we knew that
- 30:09Speaker 9: that there wasn't pressure backing up, and we rely on
- 30:12Speaker 9: the on the experts, I mean, just as anybody else should.
- 30:16Speaker 9: And you know, there were just a lot of posts
- 30:18Speaker 9: that were unnecessary and quite frankly made solely for the
- 30:21Speaker 9: purpose of making money, you.
- 30:23Speaker 2: Know, kind of lost in all this and with good
- 30:26Speaker 2: reason to understand what the flooding went on the Canaw
- 30:28Speaker 2: County Commission. Now you and Commissioner Natalie Tenant are the
- 30:33Speaker 2: are the last two, I mean not the last two,
- 30:34Speaker 2: but you're the chwo the two current and made it
- 30:38Speaker 2: sound like it was a wrestling battle royal there from it,
- 30:41Speaker 2: you'll be choosing a replacement for Lance Wheeler, who's taken
- 30:44Speaker 2: over as director of the ambulance service to Thorndon. Now
- 30:46Speaker 2: that'll be I guess will you explained this before? And
- 30:48Speaker 2: Natalie the Tenant was on the show last week she
- 30:50Speaker 2: did as well. The strike system the way it works.
- 30:52Speaker 2: So we're gonna do it a week from this Thursday.
- 30:54Speaker 2: It'll be August twenty seventh. The Republican Executive Committee submitted
- 30:58Speaker 2: three names, and I apologie I don't have those three
- 31:00Speaker 2: in front of me. I forget. Austin Gessel was one, Yeah,
- 31:04Speaker 2: Jared Page was born and uh it Edward, I'll look
- 31:09Speaker 2: it up. Edburg three names.
- 31:10Speaker 9: Yeah, so we uh the way that the law is
- 31:14Speaker 9: written now it changed is uh, we we have to
- 31:17Speaker 9: do strikes, and she and I couldn't agree on a replacement.
- 31:19Speaker 9: Of course I moved the Uh. I moved for Jared
- 31:22Speaker 9: Page and uh, there wasn't a second so the motion failed.
- 31:26Speaker 9: So then we we do the strike system. I strike first,
- 31:29Speaker 9: so we take the names. It'll be in a public meeting.
- 31:32Speaker 9: I strike the first name, Commissioner, Tenant strikes the second name,
- 31:36Speaker 9: and whoever's left is your next Canaw County Commissioner.
- 31:40Speaker 2: And so it should be uh, should be high drama,
- 31:43Speaker 2: hopefully not. Hopefully not. I don't know who it's going
- 31:46Speaker 2: to be. We'll see. I got a text here from
- 31:49Speaker 2: somebody reminded me that the Canal and I've actually thought
- 31:52Speaker 2: about this. You were sending about the equipment of the
- 31:54Speaker 2: Canal Library. Now, I don't know if they have sub
- 31:56Speaker 2: pumps and things of that nature, but they do have
- 31:57Speaker 2: a lot of tools that can be checked. That's right. Yes,
- 32:00Speaker 2: I'd forgotten about that as well. All right, so we
- 32:02Speaker 2: get out, and before we let you go, I want
- 32:03Speaker 2: to talk about Lance Wheeler, being the former commission now
- 32:06Speaker 2: the director of the Ambulance Authority had him on the
- 32:08Speaker 2: show a couple of weeks ago. It seems like he's
- 32:10Speaker 2: doing a lot of good things.
- 32:11Speaker 9: You know what, we needed somebody to focus on the budget.
- 32:13Speaker 9: The number one problem with the Ambulance Authority was budgetary.
- 32:17Speaker 9: It was it was never you know, clinical care, it
- 32:20Speaker 9: was not really operations. It is mostly budgetary. And so
- 32:25Speaker 9: I think him and Jason Surgent working together is the
- 32:28Speaker 9: right combination. We've already seen so far within the first
- 32:31Speaker 9: what's he been there a month?
- 32:32Speaker 2: Yeah, something like that. July was his life first. Yeah.
- 32:35Speaker 9: He saved almost three hundred thousand dollars in the first month.
- 32:38Speaker 9: So that's that's what we need because we've got we
- 32:40Speaker 9: had a serious budgetary issue.
- 32:42Speaker 10: Now.
- 32:42Speaker 9: The board has been working very hard on that, which
- 32:44Speaker 9: we appreciate, but we need we needed Lance to go
- 32:48Speaker 9: in there and kind of affect some significant change, especially
- 32:52Speaker 9: on the financial front, and he's doing that. He's doing
- 32:55Speaker 9: a great job.
- 32:56Speaker 2: Text. How about meetings in person and on zoom with
- 32:59Speaker 2: representatives from the state as well as all fifty five
- 33:01Speaker 2: county commissions as well as each county's mayors and find
- 33:05Speaker 2: what exactly every area of each county needs a tension
- 33:08Speaker 2: to reduce a number of flood risks that we all have.
- 33:11Speaker 2: Get all these needs discussed. One informative meeting. Maybe one
- 33:14Speaker 2: town has helpful for another, etc. Yeah.
- 33:16Speaker 9: I mean that's a good idea. We're actually going to
- 33:18Speaker 9: do that. Tom Bloom up in Mond County has done
- 33:21Speaker 9: that with regard to the jail bill, so he has
- 33:24Speaker 9: put together.
- 33:27Speaker 2: A zoom.
- 33:27Speaker 9: I think it's next week where the various county commissions,
- 33:31Speaker 9: the president of each county commission is going to get
- 33:33Speaker 9: on a zoom and talk about ways to work on
- 33:36Speaker 9: the jail bill. From a state wide perspective, it would
- 33:39Speaker 9: certainly also work on flooding and emergency management. I think
- 33:43Speaker 9: that's a great Adua.
- 33:43Speaker 2: You did have something you want to say about the
- 33:45Speaker 2: jail bill here in Kano.
- 33:46Speaker 9: Oh yeah, Well, you know, so we've had the task
- 33:47Speaker 9: force in place for a couple months now, where I'm
- 33:51Speaker 9: waiting kind of we really need six months of them
- 33:55Speaker 9: working to see exactly what it's going to do. But
- 33:59Speaker 9: for the first time in years, for the first month,
- 34:02Speaker 9: our jail bill has leveled off, which I.
- 34:05Speaker 2: Could not believe. That's big news. It's big.
- 34:08Speaker 9: So now we're going to try to reduce it. But
- 34:10Speaker 9: you know, you're talking about we're spending four hundred and
- 34:13Speaker 9: fifty thousand dollars a month on jail bill. I would
- 34:16Speaker 9: much rather put that into the Upper Canal Valley on
- 34:19Speaker 9: flood issues and in cross Lanes on flood issues, much
- 34:21Speaker 9: rather spend it there than you know, housing people awaiting
- 34:24Speaker 9: sentencing or trial.
- 34:26Speaker 4: So the.
- 34:28Speaker 9: That was the first time in years that we've actually
- 34:30Speaker 9: seen a level off on the jail bill. So the
- 34:33Speaker 9: task force is working. Now we just need to see
- 34:36Speaker 9: a decline in the jail but which I'm hoping we'll
- 34:38Speaker 9: see over the next few months. Some of the programs
- 34:40Speaker 9: they've implemented, it's just going to take a little time
- 34:42Speaker 9: to get those kind of processed through the system.
- 34:45Speaker 2: All right, Now, those three names, by the way, I
- 34:46Speaker 2: was right it was Ed Burgess. Okay, so Austin Gessel,
- 34:49Speaker 2: Jared Page, and at Burgess soon but yeah, I was
- 34:52Speaker 2: right it was Ed Burgess was the third one. I
- 34:55Speaker 2: appreciate that I'd completely forgotten. I remember Jared, I remembered.
- 34:58Speaker 9: I read the the news stories once it was released,
- 35:01Speaker 9: but I haven't even looked up their bios or anything.
- 35:03Speaker 2: Okay, And that meeting is going to be next Thursday,
- 35:05Speaker 2: Next Thursday, August twenty seven. All right, Cannan County Commissioned
- 35:09Speaker 2: President Ben Slango. Appreciate you being here man, Thanks for
- 35:11Speaker 2: thanks a lot and you and Mayor good and we're
- 35:13Speaker 2: going to make a return appearance on midday to day
- 35:15Speaker 2: I think to kind of talk about, you know, broadly,
- 35:17Speaker 2: you know, things going on the city and also with
- 35:19Speaker 2: the county as well.
- 35:20Speaker 9: Yeah, and she's had she's got a lot of good
- 35:22Speaker 9: ideas and she's been out with the workers. I mean,
- 35:24Speaker 9: I think she was out all night the night before last,
- 35:26Speaker 9: you know, with with the workers. And she's been working
- 35:30Speaker 9: very hard at it.

- 38:52Speaker 2: How are you doing, my friend, I'm well ready for Radiothon. Radiothon,
- 38:56Speaker 2: Radiothon it is back. Let's uh talk about the time
- 39:00Speaker 2: and we start when the first thing Thursday morning.
- 39:03Speaker 1: Right Thursday morning, six am.
- 39:05Speaker 17: Steve and Jenny Jenny's going to be on site for
- 39:08Speaker 17: V one hundred and a couple of our other stations
- 39:10Speaker 17: here in Charleston are participating in radio fon two ninety
- 39:14Speaker 17: six to one KWS. And you know, it's very interesting
- 39:20Speaker 17: to be on the tenth floor at WVU Medicine Children's
- 39:23Speaker 17: looking at Mylon Pushgar Stadium and knowing that one hundred
- 39:26Speaker 17: and eighty three thousand kids visited last year at WVU
- 39:30Speaker 17: Medicine Galasano Children So that would fill WVU Mylon's Pushgar Stadium.
- 39:37Speaker 2: Like three times. That's incredible. Yeah, it really is. And
- 39:41Speaker 2: you know, we've been a part of this for a
- 39:43Speaker 2: number of years. And anything that you can do when
- 39:46Speaker 2: kids are suffering like this logan, I mean, anything you
- 39:51Speaker 2: can do to give them a little bit of comfort
- 39:52Speaker 2: while they're there.
- 39:53Speaker 17: Absolutely, it's something as small as a teddy bear, because
- 39:55Speaker 17: they can't take their own toys or comfort bears, stuffed animals,
- 40:00Speaker 17: things like that to the hospital. So it's little things
- 40:03Speaker 17: that give them some normalcy that your funds are, your
- 40:06Speaker 17: donations are going back to.
- 40:08Speaker 2: And of course there's so many people. I don't know
- 40:09Speaker 2: whether you have a list or not, but I do
- 40:11Speaker 2: not have in front of me you a list of
- 40:12Speaker 2: all the people making it possible as far as our
- 40:14Speaker 2: sponsors go.
- 40:15Speaker 17: I do, of course you do, Yeah, We want to
- 40:18Speaker 17: thank the sex team at Wealth Enhancement Group, Best Virginia
- 40:21Speaker 17: Heating and Cooling, Panhandle Cleaning and Restoration, PoCA Valley, the
- 40:24Speaker 17: Paytent Law Firm, and Gomart.
- 40:26Speaker 2: Big shout out to all of them. Again, we're going
- 40:28Speaker 2: to be telling you some of their stories and not
- 40:30Speaker 2: so much commercials for them, but why it is that
- 40:33Speaker 2: they get involved in things like that. Absolutely, because whenever
- 40:36Speaker 2: we have these types of events. A few of those
- 40:37Speaker 2: that you mentioned there, a couple of them are new,
- 40:39Speaker 2: but for the most part, those were the first ones
- 40:41Speaker 2: that step up. Right, West Virginia based companies, they just
- 40:44Speaker 2: step up and say what can we do to help?
- 40:45Speaker 6: Right?
- 40:46Speaker 17: Yeah, And just some some facts for you here in
- 40:48Speaker 17: kanawh County last year, one four and twenty six out
- 40:53Speaker 17: patient visits, So that could be at WVU Medicine Thomas
- 40:55Speaker 17: because they have children's down here as well, or could
- 40:58Speaker 17: be at the actual facility in Morgantown and fifty four
- 41:02Speaker 17: inpatient stays in kanahah County last year.
- 41:04Speaker 2: I mean that's so you want to try to bring
- 41:06Speaker 2: it close to home. Absolutely, it does. It's just helping
- 41:08Speaker 2: Kanawa County. I'm sure the other surrounding counties. You know,
- 41:11Speaker 2: Putnam and Play and Roan and Jackson. I'm sure that
- 41:14Speaker 2: they've all got big numbers there as well.
- 41:15Speaker 17: And you know, I always say, everybody knows somebody who
- 41:19Speaker 17: have a family member, a child, a daughter, a mom
- 41:24Speaker 17: who has utilized.
- 41:25Speaker 2: WVU Medicine children. And you have a personal story.
- 41:27Speaker 14: I do.
- 41:27Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 41:27Speaker 17: My cousin Ainsley, she suffered an eye injury a few
- 41:30Speaker 17: years back and in Mineral County. She was shipped to
- 41:34Speaker 17: mon County at WVU Medicine Galasano's and she was treated.
- 41:38Speaker 17: Everything's fine now.
- 41:39Speaker 1: But again, everybody has some sort.
- 41:42Speaker 2: Of connection to WVU Medicine Children. And you can text
- 41:46Speaker 2: the word WVU Kids do three four nine eight four
- 41:49Speaker 2: for a link logan and you can donate that way
- 41:52Speaker 2: the credit or debit card, PayPal, Apple, pay Venmo.
- 41:56Speaker 17: And that's live now. So if if you may forget
- 42:00Speaker 17: it on Thursday or Friday, we're talking about it. We're
- 42:01Speaker 17: not gonna let you go ahead, No, we won't, we won't,
- 42:04Speaker 17: but go ahead. Yeah, that that link is active now,
- 42:06Speaker 17: so it's WVU Kids. Text that to three four.
- 42:09Speaker 2: Nine eight four and you're head into Morgantown.
- 42:11Speaker 17: I understand, right, Yeah, yep, so I'll be broadcasting with
- 42:15Speaker 17: some of our other sister stations in the morning and
- 42:16Speaker 17: then on V one hundred from noon to six.
- 42:18Speaker 2: I mean, and that's and that, and I've never had
- 42:21Speaker 2: the opportunity to do that, but for one, I understand
- 42:23Speaker 2: talking to you and others. Yeah, that really brings it home.
- 42:26Speaker 17: It does when you do that, especially when you have
- 42:28Speaker 17: the family sitting right in front of you and just
- 42:31Speaker 17: just it's so raw, like just just sharing your stories.
- 42:35Speaker 2: Good stuff.
- 42:36Speaker 6: All right.
- 42:36Speaker 2: So again, if you want to go ahead and get
- 42:38Speaker 2: your donations, you can text the word WVU Kids to

- 42:42Speaker 2: you can donate all those different ways that we talked about.
