- 0:07Speaker 1: On December fourteenth, in the year two thousand, a quiet
- 0:11Speaker 1: evening in Wichita, Kansas, erupted into an unimaginable nightmare when
- 0:15Speaker 1: five young friends were targeted in a brutal home invasion
- 0:20Speaker 1: that would ultimately leave four of them dead. This horrific
- 0:24Speaker 1: crime was just one part of a multi day terror
- 0:27Speaker 1: spree orchestrated by two brothers, affecting multiple victims and shaking
- 0:33Speaker 1: the entire community to its core. This is the terrifying
- 0:37Speaker 1: and horrific story known as the Wichita Horror.
- 0:43Speaker 2: My name's Ben, I'm Nicole, and you're listening to Wicked
- 0:46Speaker 2: and Grim, a true crime podcast.
- 0:50Speaker 1: The following podcast material intended for a mature audience.
- 0:58Speaker 2: Listener discretion easy. I haven't messed up our intro for
- 1:19Speaker 2: a while. I'm doing good.
- 1:20Speaker 1: You are doing really good. It's finally ingrained in our system.
- 1:23Speaker 2: I think someone did say it was kind of funny.
- 1:26Speaker 2: I think this was on Spotify comment or something where
- 1:30Speaker 2: it's all like creepy music and then all of a sudden,
- 1:34Speaker 2: there's me. Hey, it's Nicole. You know it doesn't totally
- 1:38Speaker 2: match the vibe.
- 1:39Speaker 1: I guess the little little light in the darkness, if
- 1:42Speaker 1: you will, there you go. Before we get into anything
- 1:46Speaker 1: at all, I want to say, in case you missed
- 1:49Speaker 1: it in the title, this is part one of a
- 1:52Speaker 1: two part series.
- 1:53Speaker 2: Look at you being nice.
- 1:55Speaker 1: Good for you just keeping people in the in the know.
- 1:57Speaker 1: You know, good job, because we used to back in
- 2:00Speaker 1: the day not let people know until the end, and
- 2:02Speaker 1: it was like, ah, it's two parter and uh yeah,
- 2:05Speaker 1: we gotten shit. So I'm letting you know.
- 2:08Speaker 2: We always get in shit, we do, we do.
- 2:13Speaker 1: So yeah, with that, I also want to warn you
- 2:15Speaker 1: there is some heavy assault in this case, sexual assault
- 2:21Speaker 1: in this case, so before warned with that.
- 2:25Speaker 2: So yeah, yeah, we're gonna be dealing with some real monsters.
- 2:29Speaker 1: Ah these Yes, let's put it that way. There is
- 2:33Speaker 1: some real monsters in this story today. I mean not
- 2:36Speaker 1: that we don't ever cover real monsters, but I mean
- 2:39Speaker 1: these people definitely take it up a notch, that's for sure.
- 2:41Speaker 2: Next level monsters.
- 2:42Speaker 1: Yeah. So with that, should we just get right into it.
- 2:45Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm ready. I got my drink. I'm ready to go.
- 2:48Speaker 1: I got my drink too. And before I say anything,
- 2:52Speaker 1: Happy Friday. Now let's get into it. So the night
- 2:56Speaker 1: of December fourteenth, two thousand, it was brisk in which
- 2:59Speaker 1: Talk Kansas, with a light dusting of snow covering the ground.
- 3:03Speaker 1: Twenty five year old Holly, a school teacher, was navigating
- 3:06Speaker 1: her way to the quiet, decorated streets with her beloved
- 3:10Speaker 1: snauzer Nikki riding Shatka next to her. Her destination was
- 3:14Speaker 1: an address on East Birchwood Drive, where she planned to
- 3:17Speaker 1: spend the evening with her boyfriend, Jason Bayfort now Jason
- 3:21Speaker 1: twenty six, was a charming high school teacher and a
- 3:24Speaker 1: basketball coach. He wasn't back from his job just yet.
- 3:27Speaker 1: He was coaching a little bit later that evening, but
- 3:30Speaker 1: Holly knew he wasn't going to be home. She had
- 3:32Speaker 1: a key of her own, so she let herself into
- 3:35Speaker 1: the condo that he shared with roommates. Inside, she was
- 3:39Speaker 1: greeted by Jason's too inviting roommates, Aaron Sanders, who was
- 3:43Speaker 1: twenty nine, who was pursuing becoming a priest, and Brad Haka,
- 3:48Speaker 1: who is twenty seven a financial analysis. Soon after, Heather Mueller,
- 3:54Speaker 1: a twenty five year old preschool teacher, arrived as well.
- 3:57Speaker 1: Heather and Aaron had previously dated, actually, but due to
- 4:00Speaker 1: their Catholic faith and Aaron's intention to become a priest
- 4:04Speaker 1: and Heather's also intention to eventually become a nun. They
- 4:08Speaker 1: respectfully ended their romantic relationship, remaining close friends, which I
- 4:12Speaker 1: love that they're just like, you know what, this isn't
- 4:15Speaker 1: for us. We got aspirations and plans. Yeah, but we're
- 4:18Speaker 1: still cool. We're still tight, we're still good friends.
- 4:20Speaker 2: Yeah. That sounds like it could have gone really any
- 4:22Speaker 2: other better way.
- 4:24Speaker 1: Right now. While waiting for Jason to finish his coaching
- 4:28Speaker 1: duties at Augusta High School, Holly set in it settled
- 4:32Speaker 1: into a room to great papers. When Jason finally arrived,
- 4:37Speaker 1: the group gathered for a comfortable evening. They had some
- 4:39Speaker 1: dinner together, They chatted conversations, and sat back to watch
- 4:43Speaker 1: some TV. As the night drew to a close, Jason,
- 4:47Speaker 1: always careful, made sure that the doors were locked before
- 4:50Speaker 1: everyone went to bed for the night. Heather took Jason's room,
- 4:54Speaker 1: Aaron made himself comfortable in the living room couch. Holly, Jason,
- 4:58Speaker 1: and their dog Nikki snuggled into his bedroom. Just as
- 5:02Speaker 1: they were getting settled in the porch, light outside unexpectedly
- 5:07Speaker 1: flicked on. Jason mumbled about having to get up and
- 5:11Speaker 1: turn it off, and then muffled voices began to grow
- 5:15Speaker 1: a little bit louder from the living room, and they
- 5:17Speaker 1: began growing louder and louder, turning into what suddenly sounded
- 5:22Speaker 1: like shouts, and without warning, the bedroom door suddenly burst open.
- 5:28Speaker 1: Holly and Jason were just scared all of a sudden,
- 5:32Speaker 1: what's going on? Their shot quickly morphed into sheer terror
- 5:36Speaker 1: because standing in the doorway was a tall man pointing
- 5:39Speaker 1: a gun directly at them. He stormed into the room,
- 5:43Speaker 1: tearing off the blankets from the bed. Close behind him
- 5:47Speaker 1: was a second, little, shorter, less muscular man who entered,
- 5:51Speaker 1: dragging airin in at gunpoint and forcing him into the bed. Nicky,
- 5:57Speaker 1: sensing the immediate threat, the dog began to growl and bark,
- 6:01Speaker 1: showing in bearing her teeth at these two individuals who
- 6:03Speaker 1: just burst into the room right One of the armed
- 6:06Speaker 1: men then pointed a gun at the dog and coldly stated,
- 6:09Speaker 1: grab your dog or will shoot her, and terrified Holly complied, m.
- 6:15Speaker 2: Hmm, well, yeah, Rick, I feel like at that moment
- 6:18Speaker 2: my rage would just be like next.
- 6:21Speaker 1: Level, Hey, but there's nothing you can do is you're helpless?
- 6:24Speaker 2: Unfortunately, Yeah, well, and still you're like probably still waking
- 6:28Speaker 2: the hell up too.
- 6:29Speaker 1: Yeah, that's true.
- 6:30Speaker 2: Now.
- 6:31Speaker 1: These two intruders then demanded to know if anyone else
- 6:34Speaker 1: was in the apartment. To frighten to resist, the trio
- 6:37Speaker 1: revealed Brad and Heather's presence. One of the men left
- 6:41Speaker 1: the room, leaving the other to keep Holly, Jason, Aaron,
- 6:45Speaker 1: and the dog Nikki at gunpoint. Moments later, the first
- 6:49Speaker 1: man returned, bringing Brad clad only in his boxers and
- 6:53Speaker 1: Heather still fully dressed. With weapons aimed at all five friends.
- 6:58Speaker 1: The two gunmen command them all to take all of
- 7:02Speaker 1: their clothes off.
- 7:03Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, Like, I already have so many questions here,
- 7:07Speaker 2: but I'm just gonna keep.
- 7:08Speaker 1: Listening, keep listening, Okay, Well, I mean, if you have
- 7:10Speaker 1: any questions, feel free to ask.
- 7:12Speaker 2: Well, I think you're going to cover them. But I'm
- 7:15Speaker 2: just how the hell did these people get in because
- 7:17Speaker 2: they were good about locking up. I mean, if there's
- 7:20Speaker 2: a will, there's a way, blah blah blah. And then
- 7:21Speaker 2: like we were they targeted, you know, well, it seems
- 7:25Speaker 2: already horrid.
- 7:27Speaker 1: I don't really talk too much about how they gain access.
- 7:30Speaker 1: I can't remember if I wrote it into part two.
- 7:33Speaker 1: I hinsed it, I guess, and what I just talked about.
- 7:36Speaker 1: So the light on the front porch came on, and
- 7:38Speaker 1: from the bedroom they heard Jason out there, you know,
- 7:41Speaker 1: who's on the couch, the couch, Yeah, mumbling about like
- 7:43Speaker 1: always got to get up and turn the light off.
- 7:45Speaker 1: He got up and he opened the door and let
- 7:48Speaker 1: these guys in accidentally.
- 7:51Speaker 2: Oh shit. But like still they probably would have been
- 7:55Speaker 2: able to get in if they wanted to.
- 7:57Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean maybe possibly, It's hard to say, but
- 8:01Speaker 1: one way or another, Yeah, they gained access because he
- 8:04Speaker 1: got up to yet get the light turned off.
- 8:07Speaker 2: Damn.
- 8:09Speaker 1: And it's I'm unclear. It's it's unclear if like maybe
- 8:13Speaker 1: he saw them and opened up to see what they wanted,
- 8:15Speaker 1: or if he didn't see them and just opened for
- 8:16Speaker 1: the light itself. But one way or another, he opened
- 8:19Speaker 1: the door and they gained entry that way.
- 8:21Speaker 2: I hate that. Okay, what was your other question, if
- 8:25Speaker 2: these people were targeted, because this just seems, like I said,
- 8:29Speaker 2: horrid already.
- 8:31Speaker 1: Unfortunately, for the most part, it wasn't really targeted.
- 8:34Speaker 2: No.
- 8:34Speaker 1: I mean, it's not not to say it's fortunate if
- 8:37Speaker 1: they were, it's just no, it was more of a
- 8:41Speaker 1: random it happened to be them.
- 8:43Speaker 2: Well, because yeah, as you were going through the intros,
- 8:45Speaker 2: and like these people seem like legit, like good people
- 8:47Speaker 2: on there.
- 8:48Speaker 1: Yeah, well one of them studying to be a priest
- 8:50Speaker 1: and the other has aspirations to be a nun and stuff.
- 8:52Speaker 2: Yeah, so like it doesn't seem like they wouldness. Well,
- 8:54Speaker 2: I mean sometimes religious people I guess are targeted, right,
- 8:57Speaker 2: But well.
- 8:58Speaker 1: Anyone can really become a target for any reason. Yeah,
- 9:01Speaker 1: it's hard to really get into that mindset of why.
- 9:04Speaker 2: But I digress. I'm already sitting on the edge of
- 9:08Speaker 2: my seat, right, I don't know if I want to
- 9:09Speaker 2: go forward.
- 9:11Speaker 1: Well, the intruders, obviously, they demand them to remove all
- 9:16Speaker 1: their clothes. That's where I left off, and they now
- 9:18Speaker 1: had no choice but to comply with guns pointed in
- 9:21Speaker 1: their face. So all five of them stripped naked and
- 9:24Speaker 1: were now shivering from fear and cold. Like it's cold, right,
- 9:28Speaker 1: I mean they are inside. But yeah, the five captives
- 9:32Speaker 1: had no choice but to simply comply and do what
- 9:36Speaker 1: they were told. They stood and stunned silence as the
- 9:39Speaker 1: shorter attacker then left the room and began ransacking the house.
- 9:42Speaker 1: Searching for valuables, unfortunately finding a little of value. The
- 9:46Speaker 1: taller gunmen became growingly frustrated visibly, and he brandished his
- 9:51Speaker 1: weapon at them, demanding to know where they kept their
- 9:53Speaker 1: money and any safe that they might have would be
- 9:57Speaker 1: in the house now Unfortunately there was no safe to
- 10:00Speaker 1: be found. Pleading with their lives, the group offered anything
- 10:05Speaker 1: they had, anything of value that they could think of,
- 10:08Speaker 1: even listing the amounts that they had in their bank accounts,
- 10:10Speaker 1: and like you can take our bank cards and like
- 10:12Speaker 1: go withdrawal or money whatever, like just leave us a loane,
- 10:14Speaker 1: like take whatever you need, like we'll give it to you.
- 10:18Speaker 1: But the intruders their desires extended far beyond just money.
- 10:24Speaker 1: The gunmen then forced Holly and Heather out of the
- 10:26Speaker 1: bedroom and into a small bar area nearby. Held at gunpoint,
- 10:31Speaker 1: the two women were then subjected to perform oral, sexual
- 10:35Speaker 1: acts and many other things on each other. Ah After
- 10:40Speaker 1: this horrifying ordeal, Heather was then brought back into the
- 10:43Speaker 1: bedroom and Brad was dragged out to take her place,
- 10:47Speaker 1: with guns pointed at him. Brad was then commanded to
- 10:51Speaker 1: have sex with Holly. However, paralyzed by terror and repulsion
- 10:58Speaker 1: over what was going on in this unfolding nightmare, Brad
- 11:01Speaker 1: was unable to become aroused or obey their commands fair enough,
- 11:06Speaker 1: the gunman, growing increasingly angry, yanked him away and replaced
- 11:09Speaker 1: him with Jason, and it was a similar situation his
- 11:14Speaker 1: body refused to comply with the demands and then recognizing
- 11:18Speaker 1: Jason as Holly's boyfriend, one of the gunmen then muttered,
- 11:22Speaker 1: that's his girl, before stating he wasn't allowed to do
- 11:26Speaker 1: anything with his own girlfriend anyways, So with that in mind,
- 11:32Speaker 1: they shoved Jason back in the bedroom and pulled Aarin
- 11:34Speaker 1: out into the bar area. However, same sort of thing.
- 11:39Speaker 1: Aaron was defiant. He refused to assault Holly and he
- 11:44Speaker 1: was just pleading them to stop. In a brutal response,
- 11:47Speaker 1: one of the gunmen struck him forcefully on the back
- 11:50Speaker 1: of the head with his weapon, knocking him to the floor. Terrified,
- 11:53Speaker 1: but knowing they had no alternative if they wished to survive,
- 11:57Speaker 1: Aaron and Hawley both desperately try to do what their
- 12:00Speaker 1: tormentors demanded of them.
- 12:04Speaker 2: This is this is horrible, Like what what kind of
- 12:07Speaker 2: game are they playing? Like? This is this is disgusting.
- 12:11Speaker 1: It is. It's an absolute nightmare. And in a situation
- 12:14Speaker 1: like this, you're nothing but helpless. I mean, first of all,
- 12:18Speaker 1: they stripped you naked, so you are completely vulnerable in
- 12:22Speaker 1: that sense of like feeling you have no no clothing,
- 12:24Speaker 1: no protection. Like, what's your first instinct when you're a
- 12:27Speaker 1: kid and you're trying to hide for monsters, You pull
- 12:29Speaker 1: a blanket or something over your face to hide. Yeah,
- 12:32Speaker 1: you have nothing to hide in now. And then you're
- 12:35Speaker 1: being subject to this, not even like on your own self,
- 12:40Speaker 1: but you're forced to do something to someone else, someone
- 12:43Speaker 1: a friend, A friend, yeah, friend's significant other, someone you
- 12:46Speaker 1: respect and you know, and it's wild. And these guys
- 12:51Speaker 1: are just like, do this do this for reasons that
- 12:53Speaker 1: I can't even comprehend.
- 12:55Speaker 2: Well, yeah, just to think that a human brain can
- 12:59Speaker 2: be that evil to do that to someone.
- 13:01Speaker 1: Right, to think that they would come up with that.
- 13:03Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 13:04Speaker 1: Now. Eventually, the gunman returned Hally to the bedroom with
- 13:07Speaker 1: Brad and Jason. They then crammed all three, along with
- 13:10Speaker 1: Nikki the dog, into the closet, warning them to remain
- 13:14Speaker 1: silent or face severe consequences. The intruders then pulled Heather
- 13:19Speaker 1: back out, attempting to force Arin to have sex with
- 13:22Speaker 1: her instead, and when Aarin couldn't bring himself to obey,
- 13:25Speaker 1: they gave a chilling ultimatum. They had exactly two minutes.
- 13:30Speaker 1: He in those two minutes needed to become aroused and
- 13:33Speaker 1: comply or they would begin to inflict pain upon them,
- 13:38Speaker 1: and that's when they began to count down those two minutes.
- 13:43Speaker 1: They counted from eleven fifty two to eleven fifty four PM,
- 13:47Speaker 1: but nothing changed for Aarin, and as a brutal punishment,
- 13:50Speaker 1: one of them grabbed a nearby golf club and began
- 13:53Speaker 1: to beat him with the golf club. This agonizing routine continued,
- 13:59Speaker 1: with the attackers then forcing Jason and later Brad to
- 14:03Speaker 1: sexually assault Heather, beating them when they resisted or were
- 14:07Speaker 1: unable to do what they were told. The other friends
- 14:10Speaker 1: were trapped inside the closet, shivering, crying, and listening to
- 14:14Speaker 1: the horrors as the dog, Nikki whimpered in fear beside them.
- 14:18Speaker 1: This was an unimaginable ordeal that persisted for approximately an hour,
- 14:24Speaker 1: leaving all five friends feeling utterly broken, traumatized, and trapped
- 14:29Speaker 1: living in a nightmare as they hoped would steadily end
- 14:33Speaker 1: at any second, but it seemed like Hope just dwindled
- 14:38Speaker 1: away instead.
- 14:40Speaker 2: Yeah, I yeah, it's unimaginable what they're going through right now.
- 14:44Speaker 1: Now. After the prolonged abuse, the attackers then finally announced
- 14:48Speaker 1: their next move. They were going to take each captive
- 14:51Speaker 1: one by one to an ATM to withdraw money from
- 14:55Speaker 1: their bank account. Releasing the victims from the closet, they
- 14:58Speaker 1: ordered them to locate their car keys in the house. Now,
- 15:01Speaker 1: this brief pause in the torment allowed the friends a precious,
- 15:06Speaker 1: subtle opportunity to really observe their captors more closely, because
- 15:11Speaker 1: before it was you know, gun's pointed in their face
- 15:13Speaker 1: and it was one on one and they couldn't really focus.
- 15:16Speaker 1: But now the attention was broken up between the five
- 15:19Speaker 1: of them, and in that moment it allowed them to
- 15:21Speaker 1: really kind of absorb the situation. They noted that both
- 15:24Speaker 1: of the perpetrators, both of these men were black, with
- 15:27Speaker 1: features similar enough to suggest that they might actually even
- 15:30Speaker 1: be brothers. The taller of the assailant wore a black
- 15:34Speaker 1: leather coat and gloves over an orange Fubu sweater, which
- 15:38Speaker 1: is a brand, while the shorter man's hair was described
- 15:41Speaker 1: by Holly as clumped and poofy. However, the chaos of
- 15:46Speaker 1: the ransacked house in it all, none of the victims
- 15:49Speaker 1: could immediately find their car keys. I mean, they were
- 15:51Speaker 1: searching for valuables, these two, right, They were overturning things
- 15:54Speaker 1: and throwing things, doing what they could, and in this mess,
- 15:59Speaker 1: they couldn't really find their keys that easily, and the
- 16:01Speaker 1: failure quickly exhausted the gunman's patience, leading to a chilling threat.
- 16:06Speaker 1: If they didn't find their keys soon, or if the
- 16:09Speaker 1: keys didn't appear soon, they would be killed.
- 16:13Speaker 2: These Okay, I mean, yeah, I don't. I was just
- 16:16Speaker 2: gonna say they have no patience, but these are disgusting
- 16:18Speaker 2: human beings, so yeah, of course they wouldn't.
- 16:21Speaker 1: They have no morals, no soul, no dignity, no nothing.
- 16:24Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 16:25Speaker 1: Now, finally Jason spotted keys to his truck back in
- 16:28Speaker 1: his bedroom. The taller gunman, now happy to have the keys,
- 16:33Speaker 1: ordered him to dress and left with him in the truck,
- 16:36Speaker 1: while the shorter man remained behind with the other four friends.
- 16:40Speaker 1: The remaining intruder sent Aaron, Brad and Heather back into
- 16:43Speaker 1: the closet. He then made Holly lie down on the floor,
- 16:47Speaker 1: lowering his gun as he prepared to assault her. He
- 16:52Speaker 1: laid the gun next to him, and as he began,
- 16:54Speaker 1: Holly's gaze drifted to the gun lying less than two
- 16:59Speaker 1: feet away. In this act and assault, her mind raced
- 17:04Speaker 1: with a desperate question. Could she grab it before he reacted?
- 17:09Speaker 1: Could she maybe shoot him even if she could grab it?
- 17:11Speaker 1: Could she pull that trigger? Could she do what she
- 17:14Speaker 1: needed to do even if she did get a hold
- 17:16Speaker 1: of it. But overwhelmed by the paralyzing fear of the
- 17:20Speaker 1: catastrophic consequences for everyone if her attempt failed, Holly ultimately
- 17:25Speaker 1: decided not to reach for the gun. She silently endured
- 17:29Speaker 1: the assault for about five minutes before returning to the closet.
- 17:33Speaker 1: The intruder then took Heather out with him, leaving the
- 17:37Speaker 1: remaining three friends to listen to more agonizing assaults happening outside.
- 17:44Speaker 1: Aarin in particular, couldn't stop his own tears as he
- 17:47Speaker 1: listened to Heather being assaulted his girlfriend. Eventually, Aaron whispered
- 17:53Speaker 1: a terrifying question to Brad, quote, do you think they're
- 17:57Speaker 1: going to kill us? And Brad didn't answer. He didn't
- 18:01Speaker 1: know how to answer.
- 18:04Speaker 2: Well, yeah, you can only imagine after what they're doing
- 18:07Speaker 2: like they're going to want to probably try to get
- 18:10Speaker 2: rid of this evidence of witnesses, right.
- 18:13Speaker 1: Very possible. Yeah, And if they're going to this lengths,
- 18:17Speaker 1: I mean, who knows how far they'll go, right Yeah. Now,
- 18:21Speaker 1: after some time, the taller attacker returned with Jason, you
- 18:25Speaker 1: know from the ATM, and he forced him to now
- 18:28Speaker 1: undress completely once more, and then made Brad get dressed
- 18:32Speaker 1: and accompany him outside to withdraw money in Jason's place.
- 18:36Speaker 1: So they took Jason's truck. They have his ATM card,
- 18:39Speaker 1: and they're going to go withdraw money from his account. Now,
- 18:41Speaker 1: as I mentioned before, it's gonna be a one by
- 18:43Speaker 1: one process. Now, after Brad, the man selected Hawlly as
- 18:48Speaker 1: the next to go with him, but unlike the men,
- 18:50Speaker 1: he only allowed her to put on a sweater, leaving
- 18:53Speaker 1: her completely nude from the waist down as they stepped
- 18:57Speaker 1: outside into the cold snow. They got into Jason's truck
- 19:00Speaker 1: and the gunman commanded her to drive, keeping his weapon
- 19:03Speaker 1: fixed on her as she backed out of the driveway
- 19:05Speaker 1: onto the icy streets alone with him, and unsettling silence
- 19:12Speaker 1: just hung in the air in that trunk as they
- 19:14Speaker 1: drove until the gunman finally broke it by asking what
- 19:18Speaker 1: his partner had done with her and to the others
- 19:20Speaker 1: when he was gone. A Holly in that instant didn't
- 19:25Speaker 1: really know what to say, but not wanting to anger
- 19:28Speaker 1: the guy any farther, she chose honesty. She explained everything
- 19:33Speaker 1: that happened, including how the other gunman had forced her
- 19:36Speaker 1: to have sex with him. Far from showing any sort
- 19:39Speaker 1: of compassion towards her or her friends, he just kind
- 19:43Speaker 1: of laughed it off at what was happening, and he
- 19:47Speaker 1: asked her if she enjoyed.
- 19:48Speaker 2: It, wow, okay, okay.
- 19:53Speaker 1: Fearing his rage, you know, fearing upsetting him or anything.
- 19:56Speaker 1: Once again, Holly made the split second decision to do
- 20:00Speaker 1: what her gut told her, and though she did not
- 20:03Speaker 1: enjoy it, she chose to lie and tell him what
- 20:06Speaker 1: he wanted to hear, and playing along, she simply responded yes,
- 20:12Speaker 1: hoping to keep him calm and keep things from going
- 20:15Speaker 1: too far. He continued his unnerving questions, asking if his
- 20:20Speaker 1: partner was better than her boyfriend Jason, oh my gosh,
- 20:24Speaker 1: and if she'd ever quote being with a black man before,
- 20:28Speaker 1: and if she'd quote enjoyed being intimate with a girl
- 20:32Speaker 1: like she would actually enjoy any of this stuff that
- 20:34Speaker 1: she's being forced over.
- 20:36Speaker 2: This this is just like making me just like pissed.
- 20:41Speaker 1: It's it's sickening, is what it is.
- 20:43Speaker 2: Yeah, like it.
- 20:44Speaker 1: It makes me feel nauseous.
- 20:46Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 20:47Speaker 1: Now, after a while of playing along, answering all the questions,
- 20:51Speaker 1: trying to make sure she tells him what he wants
- 20:53Speaker 1: to hear, Holly's deep seated fear finally overwhelmed her, and
- 20:56Speaker 1: she couldn't help but ask the one question that was
- 20:59Speaker 1: on her mind. She asked him if they were planning
- 21:02Speaker 1: to kill her and her friends. The gunman surprisingly reassured
- 21:07Speaker 1: her that once they were finished with everything they needed,
- 21:09Speaker 1: getting the money and everything, they would all be left alive.
- 21:14Speaker 1: Now at the ATM, Hally lowered her window, rolling it down,
- 21:18Speaker 1: her card into the machine, and withdrew as much cash
- 21:21Speaker 1: as she could get out. Now. As she was reaching
- 21:23Speaker 1: out the window and pressing the buttons for the transaction,
- 21:26Speaker 1: that's when she felt something on her leg. It was
- 21:30Speaker 1: the gunman's hand and it was sliding on her leg
- 21:33Speaker 1: and he began to touch her in ways. That's all
- 21:38Speaker 1: I'll say. Shocked, but fighting to remain calm, Holly completed
- 21:43Speaker 1: the transaction, handed the money over to him, and just
- 21:47Speaker 1: continued to do what she could to keep calm and
- 21:51Speaker 1: do what he wanted. As they continued driving to various ATMs,
- 21:55Speaker 1: the man's side or remark that he wished they'd met
- 21:58Speaker 1: under different circumstances because he believed that they'd probably hit
- 22:01Speaker 1: it off pretty good. Yeah, she was disgusted with that,
- 22:05Speaker 1: and again still just played along though, like.
- 22:09Speaker 2: Oh okay, like, shut the fuck up really, Like this
- 22:14Speaker 2: guy is just is so gross.
- 22:16Speaker 1: Yeah, if you can't get disgusted enough with him, it
- 22:18Speaker 1: seems like he just keeps managing to be able to
- 22:20Speaker 1: get there to disgust you even fucking more.
- 22:23Speaker 2: Yeah, like, and he's completely diluted. Thinking, Oh man, if
- 22:26Speaker 2: we met in different circumstances, are you kidding? Are you kidding?
- 22:31Speaker 2: You're a complete monster. No one would ever like you.
- 22:34Speaker 1: So do you want to tell me how you really feel?
- 22:39Speaker 1: If you want to keep.
- 22:39Speaker 2: Going, go for it. I could keep going, but you're
- 22:41Speaker 2: not wrong trying to keep a PG ish all.
- 22:46Speaker 1: Right, ish, Well, I don't know if this is a
- 22:49Speaker 1: PG thirteen show, So I mean, you can honestly probably
- 22:52Speaker 1: go farther than that if you want. This is at
- 22:55Speaker 1: least righted r if I'm being honest. Yeah, anyways. Upon
- 22:59Speaker 1: their return into the house, Aaron was then forced to
- 23:01Speaker 1: take Holly's place and leave with the taller attacker. Holly
- 23:05Speaker 1: was then stripped again and led back to the closet
- 23:07Speaker 1: by the bar with Heather. The shorter gunman picked up
- 23:10Speaker 1: a bottle of whiskey, poured himself a drink from the bar,
- 23:13Speaker 1: and opened the cupboard, asking Brad, Jason and Holly if
- 23:16Speaker 1: they wanted a drink, and the offer was declined on
- 23:19Speaker 1: all the chords by all of them the shit. He
- 23:23Speaker 1: then handed Holly Nicky's muzzle the dog and watched as
- 23:27Speaker 1: she placed on her before slamming the closet door shut
- 23:30Speaker 1: once again. As he sipped on his drink, the intruder
- 23:34Speaker 1: picked up a popcorn tin that was sitting nearby, and
- 23:37Speaker 1: as he picked it up, it made an odd sound
- 23:39Speaker 1: on the inside when he shook it. He opened it
- 23:41Speaker 1: up to look inside, and what he discovered inside appeared
- 23:46Speaker 1: to be an engagement ring. Jason then revealed that he
- 23:51Speaker 1: had been planning to propose to Holly on December twenty second.
- 23:57Speaker 1: In that horrifying, unimaginable situation, with all this terrifying horror
- 24:02Speaker 1: going on. Holly just learned that the man that she
- 24:06Speaker 1: loved intended to ask her hand in marriage.
- 24:09Speaker 2: Oh no, oh.
- 24:12Speaker 1: Man, showing absolutely no emotion upon finding the engagement ring.
- 24:17Speaker 1: What do you think the guy did? He took it
- 24:20Speaker 1: and put it in his pocket.
- 24:21Speaker 2: Well, yeah, I'm like it's worth something, so yeah.
- 24:25Speaker 1: When Aaron and the taller man returned, Holly was yanked
- 24:28Speaker 1: from the closet. Noticing her extreme fear, the shorter man
- 24:32Speaker 1: uttered words that sent shivers down her spine. He said, quote, relax,
- 24:38Speaker 1: We're not going to shoot you. Yet Holly flinched at
- 24:42Speaker 1: that last word in his sentence. Yet in that moment,
- 24:48Speaker 1: with that one sentence, she knew for certain that despite
- 24:52Speaker 1: the man's reassurance in the truck earlier, they intended to
- 24:57Speaker 1: kill them. Yep, the s The shorter gunmen then forced
- 25:01Speaker 1: her onto all fours and proceeded to assault her once again.
- 25:05Speaker 1: Once finished, he led her into the bedroom, where the
- 25:08Speaker 1: taller man was in the process of also assaulting Heather.
- 25:11Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, this is just like not ending hey, NonStop.
- 25:15Speaker 1: It's constant. And after the taller man completed his assault,
- 25:19Speaker 1: he too assaulted Holly before tossing what appeared to be
- 25:22Speaker 1: a condom in the toilet and flushing it away. The
- 25:26Speaker 1: two men then brought Holly and Heather back to the
- 25:28Speaker 1: bar area. There, the two women watched terrified as their
- 25:31Speaker 1: captors whispered planning their next move and what they were
- 25:34Speaker 1: going to do. Eventually, the gunmen told both women to
- 25:38Speaker 1: put sweaters on once more, They led them barefoot and
- 25:41Speaker 1: naked from the waist down into the garage and ordered
- 25:44Speaker 1: them both to climb into the trunk of Aaron's Honda Accord.
- 25:48Speaker 1: Moments later, Brad, Jason and Aaron were brought down as well,
- 25:52Speaker 1: all of them completely naked this time, and instructed to
- 25:55Speaker 1: get into the trunk with the two women. However, realizing
- 25:58Speaker 1: that all five captors clearly wouldn't fit into the trunk
- 26:01Speaker 1: of a car, the attackers quickly changed their plan. The
- 26:05Speaker 1: three men were locked into the trunk of the Honda,
- 26:08Speaker 1: while the other women were led over to Jason's truck,
- 26:12Speaker 1: with the taller man taking the wheel of the truck
- 26:14Speaker 1: and the shorter man taking the wheel of the Honda Accord.
- 26:16Speaker 1: The two vehicles departed with all five victims inside.
- 26:20Speaker 2: Oh the act, Okay, they're taking them away. I don't
- 26:23Speaker 2: know why, but I didn't expect that.
- 26:25Speaker 1: Eventually, Holly mustered the courage to ask where they were
- 26:28Speaker 1: being taken, and the reply she got was that they're
- 26:31Speaker 1: going to be dropped off somewhere far enough away to
- 26:34Speaker 1: not cause these guys any sort of issues. Finally, the
- 26:39Speaker 1: two vehicles came to a stop in a desolate, snow
- 26:42Speaker 1: covered field. The trunk of the car was opened and
- 26:45Speaker 1: all three men were dragged out. They were then ordered
- 26:48Speaker 1: to kneel in front of the car. Holly and Heather
- 26:52Speaker 1: knew with horrifying certainty that they were about to be shot,
- 26:56Speaker 1: yet they could do absolutely nothing. Forced from their vehicle
- 27:01Speaker 1: and made to neil beside the three men in the snow.
- 27:04Speaker 1: Heather knelt beside her boyfriend Aaron, sorry former boyfriend, Aaron,
- 27:09Speaker 1: while Holly was taken her place right next to her
- 27:12Speaker 1: boyfriend Jason, or maybe I should say fiance. Then Aaron
- 27:21Speaker 1: pled for his life, his words broken by terror, saying please, no, sir, please,
- 27:27Speaker 1: and one by one, execution style, each one of them
- 27:31Speaker 1: were shot in the back of the head. When it
- 27:34Speaker 1: got to Holly, the gun was placed behind her head
- 27:38Speaker 1: and bang, she was shot. Hally's vision exploded with a
- 27:42Speaker 1: burst of gray with white all kind of mixed like
- 27:45Speaker 1: stars flashing as she collapsed onto the ground. But incredibly,
- 27:48Speaker 1: despite being shot in the back of the fucking head,
- 27:52Speaker 1: she remained conscious. She later described it as quote, I
- 28:00Speaker 1: felt the bullet hit the back of my head. It
- 28:02Speaker 1: went kind of gray with white like stars. I wasn't
- 28:05Speaker 1: knocked unconscious. I didn't fall forward in that moment. Someone
- 28:10Speaker 1: then kicked her, falling or pushing her forward, and she
- 28:13Speaker 1: immediately when she hit the ground, played dead, not moving.
- 28:17Speaker 2: Holy heck. Okay, well right there, as you were just
- 28:21Speaker 2: like describing what she felt, I was like, how are you?
- 28:25Speaker 2: I mean, there's been a few things. I'm like, how
- 28:27Speaker 2: are you describing what she certain things that she felt.
- 28:30Speaker 2: So there's been little like tidbits, yeap.
- 28:32Speaker 1: If you're not aware. This is described from Holly's perspective. Yeah, now,
- 28:39Speaker 1: after a terrifying, painful silence, as she lay there playing
- 28:43Speaker 1: dead in the snow, with her friends presumably dead next
- 28:47Speaker 1: to her.
- 28:48Speaker 2: Well, she can only hope that maybe the same happened
- 28:50Speaker 2: to them, though.
- 28:51Speaker 1: Yeah, she waited and she heard an engine rumbling, and
- 28:57Speaker 1: before Holly could even consider moving, the truck accelerated and
- 29:00Speaker 1: drove directly over all five bodies. What She fought with
- 29:06Speaker 1: every fiber of her being not to scream as a
- 29:08Speaker 1: vehicle moved across her, remaining silent and hum somehow still
- 29:13Speaker 1: remaining conscious as she's being run over.
- 29:15Speaker 2: Holy shit, she's been through so much already.
- 29:18Speaker 1: And she listened as the sounds of the truck faded away,
- 29:21Speaker 1: moving further and further into the distance. Eventually, she dared
- 29:26Speaker 1: to move her head enough to confirm that the truck
- 29:28Speaker 1: and the two gunmen were gone. Struggling to move and
- 29:32Speaker 1: even breathe remember she'd been shot in the back of
- 29:35Speaker 1: the head and run over by a pickup.
- 29:37Speaker 2: Holly and abused for hours.
- 29:39Speaker 1: Yes, yeah, yes, you're right. Holly tried to call out
- 29:42Speaker 1: for Jason, Brad, Aaron, and Heather, but each name gave
- 29:48Speaker 1: no response.
- 29:48Speaker 2: No one answered.
- 29:50Speaker 1: Holly forced her injured body up from the snow, turned
- 29:54Speaker 1: to her friends, and her gaze fell upon the man
- 29:58Speaker 1: that she loved and her the other friends laying motionless,
- 30:02Speaker 1: face down in blood soaked snow. She was unsure if
- 30:06Speaker 1: anyone was still alive, and she collapsed beside Jason, desperately
- 30:10Speaker 1: turning him over. Blood was pouring out of Jason, even
- 30:16Speaker 1: out of his eyes. She quickly pulled off her sweater,
- 30:20Speaker 1: the only clothes she was wearing, and wrapped it around
- 30:23Speaker 1: his head, frantically trying to stop the bleeding in a
- 30:27Speaker 1: desperate attempt to save his life. However, he wasn't breathing,
- 30:34Speaker 1: he wasn't alive.
- 30:35Speaker 2: Yeah, he was probably already gone.
- 30:37Speaker 1: Brad was next the next one she turned over, but
- 30:39Speaker 1: the horrific state of his body instantly confirmed that he
- 30:42Speaker 1: was gone. Heather and Aaron lay in equal devastating conditions,
- 30:47Speaker 1: freezing cold, standing naked in the snow, blood seeping from
- 30:51Speaker 1: her gunshot wound in her head, and her body aching
- 30:54Speaker 1: from what had just occurred being run over, and as
- 30:57Speaker 1: you mentioned the assault as well. Holly frantically began and
- 31:00Speaker 1: searching for help, and then in the distance, near the
- 31:03Speaker 1: highway that was not too far off, she spotted lights
- 31:06Speaker 1: that glowed like a house adorned with Christmas decorations. Desperate
- 31:12Speaker 1: her unimaginable injuries as she had, and being barefoot and nude,
- 31:16Speaker 1: she somehow managed to walk over a mile through the
- 31:19Speaker 1: freezing cold. Her journey led her across a field, over
- 31:24Speaker 1: barbed wire fences, passed a construction site, around a pond,
- 31:27Speaker 1: and through thick brush. As if the trek wasn't difficult enough,
- 31:30Speaker 1: every time headlights appeared on the road, she instinctively threw
- 31:34Speaker 1: herself down into the snow until they passed, because it
- 31:38Speaker 1: could be the attackers returning.
- 31:40Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 31:41Speaker 1: Eventually she reached the house that was glowing with festive
- 31:45Speaker 1: Christmas tree at Christmas lights. She rushed to the front door,
- 31:49Speaker 1: pounding on it and rained the doorbell relentlessly. Inside, a
- 31:53Speaker 1: young couple peered out the window, shocked to see this
- 31:56Speaker 1: nude woman covered in blood shivering uncontrollably on their port.
- 32:00Speaker 1: They quickly hurried to bring her inside and wrapped her
- 32:03Speaker 1: in blankets, but before they could even dial nine on one,
- 32:07Speaker 1: Holly stopped them. Convinced she was on the verge of death,
- 32:11Speaker 1: she felt an overwhelming need to tell them everything that
- 32:14Speaker 1: had just happened in detail before help arrived. She needed
- 32:18Speaker 1: to get this all out because if she died now,
- 32:21Speaker 1: then no one would know she's the only survivor. So
- 32:24Speaker 1: listening to her horrifying account, the couple finally called the police.
- 32:28Speaker 1: Still remarkably coherent, Holly took over the phone and managed
- 32:32Speaker 1: to explain to the dispatcher precisely where the field was
- 32:36Speaker 1: guiding them to find her friends. She was still clinging
- 32:40Speaker 1: to the desperate hope that at least Jason might still
- 32:43Speaker 1: be alive, and that wrapping the sweater around his head
- 32:46Speaker 1: might have been the thing that could have saved him.
- 32:49Speaker 1: Detective Rick Craig, a seasoned officer, was among the first
- 32:53Speaker 1: emergency personnel to arrive at the field at around three
- 32:57Speaker 1: am that morning. As he approached this he initially shivered
- 33:01Speaker 1: from the bitter cold and biting wind. However, the sight
- 33:06Speaker 1: of the four nude bodies, each with a gunshot to
- 33:08Speaker 1: the back of their head, laying in the blood covered
- 33:11Speaker 1: snow instantly made him forget the chill that he was feeling,
- 33:15Speaker 1: because a whole new chill came over his body instead.
- 33:19Speaker 1: He later recalled, quote, I wasn't cold anymore.
- 33:24Speaker 2: We're basically just numb.
- 33:26Speaker 1: Yeah, As Holly had tragically confirmed her four friends, Jason Berefoort,
- 33:32Speaker 1: Brad Haka, Aaron Sanders, and Heather Mueller were all dead.
- 33:39Speaker 1: After speaking briefly with Holly before paramedics rushed her to
- 33:42Speaker 1: the hospital, detectives immediately issued an alert for Jason's stolen
- 33:46Speaker 1: truck It was later verified that the bullet intended for
- 33:50Speaker 1: Holly's brain had been miraculously deflected by a butterfly hair
- 33:56Speaker 1: clip that she was wearing.
- 33:58Speaker 2: Seriously, yeah, that's what ended up happening.
- 34:02Speaker 1: Yes, holy shit. And the truck that ran her over
- 34:07Speaker 1: also miraculously just failed to crush her body enough.
- 34:12Speaker 2: Holy that is like a miracle, really, hey.
- 34:15Speaker 1: One hundred percent of a miracle. Now, Tragically, what Holly
- 34:20Speaker 1: didn't know as she fought desperately for her life to
- 34:23Speaker 1: reach the house was that the two assailants had actually
- 34:26Speaker 1: returned to the triplex where they lived like the condo
- 34:31Speaker 1: yeah on Birchwood Drive, and continued their pillaging. Worse yet,
- 34:35Speaker 1: they had murdered Holly's beloved dog, Niki.
- 34:39Speaker 2: Of course they did.
- 34:40Speaker 1: Of course, Nikki was left in a pool of blood
- 34:43Speaker 1: on one of the beds.
- 34:44Speaker 2: Holy shit.
- 34:48Speaker 1: That morning, Sedwick County District Attorney Nola Fauston received grim
- 34:53Speaker 1: news detectives were investigating a quadruple homicide. Bizarrely, just eight
- 34:59Speaker 1: days earlier, another unrelated quadruple homicide had occurred in the area,
- 35:05Speaker 1: with the two perpetrators already in custody. Fulston initially thought
- 35:10Speaker 1: the dispatcher was simply mistaken, unable to comprehend that two
- 35:14Speaker 1: such devastating events could happen in the same county within
- 35:17Speaker 1: a single week. The entire city of Wichita was gripped
- 35:21Speaker 1: by disbelief and fear as the news of the horrors
- 35:24Speaker 1: unfolded on their television screens. That morning, new stations broadcast
- 35:29Speaker 1: the license plate number of Jason stolen truck, igniting a
- 35:32Speaker 1: wave of terror and urgency throughout the community. The desperate
- 35:36Speaker 1: hunt for these cold blooded killers had officially begun, and
- 35:40Speaker 1: Jason stolen truck his license plate number provided the first
- 35:44Speaker 1: significant break in the case.
- 35:47Speaker 2: Kate, they had done this already.
- 35:50Speaker 1: There is eight people dead. Yes, there was a quadruple homicide,
- 35:55Speaker 1: and then a few days later another quadruple homicide.
- 35:58Speaker 2: Wow. I mean I was sitting here already just like
- 36:04Speaker 2: completely gutted that they did this. And to think that
- 36:08Speaker 2: they had previously already done this, Yeah, Like, I can't
- 36:12Speaker 2: even believe that we live in a world with people
- 36:16Speaker 2: that fucked up and that disgusting.
- 36:19Speaker 1: Hm hmm. So the thing is, though, with the first
- 36:22Speaker 1: quadruple homicide, they did already have the perpetrators.
- 36:24Speaker 2: In custody, Okay, so it wasn't them, but still, so
- 36:28Speaker 2: that's even worse almost. That means that there's like numerous
- 36:32Speaker 2: people doing this kind of shit out there anyway.
- 36:36Speaker 1: Okay, well we'll talk about it. Don't worry, Okay. Now.
- 36:40Speaker 1: Christian Taylor, a local resident, was watching the news when
- 36:43Speaker 1: he recognized the description of the truck as one he'd
- 36:46Speaker 1: seen parked near his own apartment complex earlier that morning.
- 36:49Speaker 1: He immediately contacted police when he put these two together.
- 36:53Speaker 1: Officers quickly descended upon the apartment complex, confirming it was
- 36:57Speaker 1: indeed jason stolen vehicle. Then another resident approached the officers,
- 37:01Speaker 1: informing them he'd helped a man carry a large television
- 37:04Speaker 1: into an upstairs apartment. This tip, combined with the presence
- 37:08Speaker 1: of the stolen truck, was a major lead. I mean,
- 37:12Speaker 1: this guy literally knew exactly which apartment too.
- 37:14Speaker 2: Yeah, right, like they've obviously lived there, I guess.
- 37:17Speaker 1: So police surrounded that apartment and knocked on the door,
- 37:20Speaker 1: and moments later, a tall black man appeared on the balcony.
- 37:23Speaker 1: He was putting his foot up on the railing as
- 37:26Speaker 1: if preparing to jump over instead of answering the door,
- 37:29Speaker 1: and in that moment before he jumped. He froze because
- 37:32Speaker 1: he spotted officers who surrounded the building positioned below, so
- 37:37Speaker 1: he retreated back inside. A Caucasian woman, Stephanie Donnelly, answered
- 37:41Speaker 1: the door to police, who swiftly entered and handcuffed the
- 37:44Speaker 1: tall man who was appearing to find another exit or
- 37:48Speaker 1: another escape, and was clearly trying to escape from the balcony.
- 37:51Speaker 1: Now this individual was Reginald Carr, a twenty two year
- 37:55Speaker 1: old from Dodge City with a significant criminal history. He
- 37:59Speaker 1: perfectly matched Holly's description of the taller gunman. Police now
- 38:04Speaker 1: strongly suspected his younger brother, twenty year old Jonathan Carr,
- 38:08Speaker 1: to be the shorter assailant that was described. From Stephanie,
- 38:12Speaker 1: who was Reginald's girlfriend, officers learned that his brother, Jonathan
- 38:17Speaker 1: was driving a late model Plymouth Fury. This crucial piece
- 38:20Speaker 1: of new information was quickly spread in news reports by
- 38:24Speaker 1: that afternoon. Andrew Schibber Shribber, Shribber, that's how you say
- 38:29Speaker 1: his last name. Andrew Shribber, the Wichita State University baseball
- 38:32Speaker 1: player who had been robbed earlier days earlier. I should
- 38:36Speaker 1: say saw Reginald's face on the news. I mean he
- 38:39Speaker 1: sees this guy, and he instantly recognizes him without hesitation.
- 38:42Speaker 1: Andrew calls a police and he informs him that Reginald
- 38:45Speaker 1: was the one of the two men who had abducted
- 38:48Speaker 1: and robbed him. There's a lot going.
- 38:51Speaker 2: On in this, no kidding, And these guys are so young.
- 38:55Speaker 1: Yeah. Now, this was the first concrete link that revealed
- 38:58Speaker 1: the car brothers who were responsible for an earlier string
- 39:01Speaker 1: of violence proceeding in the Birchwood massacre. Around the same time,
- 39:05Speaker 1: healthcare worker Tony Green returned home from work feeling unwell.
- 39:11Speaker 1: Inside her house, she noticed her daughter, Tronda's boyfriend sleeping
- 39:14Speaker 1: on the couch. They'd only been dating a couple of weeks,
- 39:17Speaker 1: and Tony didn't know him well. But as she looked
- 39:20Speaker 1: at him, having absorbed the morning's news report, she couldn't
- 39:23Speaker 1: shake the unsettling feeling that he matched the description of
- 39:26Speaker 1: one of the attackers. H Her instinct was tragically accurate.
- 39:31Speaker 1: The man that was right now sleeping on her couch
- 39:34Speaker 1: was one of the gunmen, the shorter one, the shorter brother,
- 39:36Speaker 1: Jonathan Carr. Holy frigg, trusting your gut, Tony cautiously lifted
- 39:44Speaker 1: Jonathan's leather jacket and searched his pockets, finding a small
- 39:48Speaker 1: jewelry box and inside was a diamond engagement ring that
- 39:51Speaker 1: she had heard was stolen in the news. It was
- 39:55Speaker 1: the very ring that Jason planned to give Holly for
- 39:57Speaker 1: their engagement.
- 39:58Speaker 2: Yeah, hidden in the popcorn container or something.
- 40:03Speaker 1: Yep. In that moment, she looked outside and guess what
- 40:06Speaker 1: she spotted the Plymouth fury parked on the street, the
- 40:10Speaker 1: very one that was being spread in the news. Now
- 40:13Speaker 1: certain she had a killer who was sleeping on the
- 40:16Speaker 1: couch in her house, Tony tried to remain as quiet
- 40:19Speaker 1: as possible as she instructed her daughter to grab her
- 40:21Speaker 1: young niece and leave the house immediately. Not fully grasping
- 40:25Speaker 1: the extreme urgency of this situation, Tronda slowly tried to
- 40:28Speaker 1: put her shoes on. You know, it's snowy outside, it's cold, right,
- 40:31Speaker 1: But Tony's like, no, like, get the fuck out now,
- 40:33Speaker 1: like quietly, like go, don't need shoes, just run. So
- 40:37Speaker 1: the three of them rushed out, their bare feet slipping
- 40:40Speaker 1: on the snow as they stumbled across the road to
- 40:42Speaker 1: a neighbor's house, and they dialed nine one point one panic.
- 40:46Speaker 1: Tony informed the dispatcher that the men were searching. The
- 40:49Speaker 1: men that they're searching for. Is it's in her home
- 40:51Speaker 1: right now? One of them's there.
- 40:53Speaker 2: Yep.
- 40:54Speaker 1: When she glanced back, Jonathan was standing on her porch
- 40:56Speaker 1: in jeans and a T shirt, staring directly at her.
- 41:00Speaker 1: Her then he bolted. Police units already in the area
- 41:06Speaker 1: arrived almost instantly and gave chase, pursuing him for two
- 41:09Speaker 1: blocks before they finally caught him and arrested him.
- 41:12Speaker 2: Okay, good. I was like, I was worried they weren't
- 41:15Speaker 2: going to catch this bastard.
- 41:17Speaker 1: No, they got him. A search of his persons revealed
- 41:19Speaker 1: about one thousand dollars in cash and the stolen engagement ring.
- 41:23Speaker 1: Less than twelve hours after the horrors at Birchwood Drive,
- 41:26Speaker 1: both Reginald and John Carr were in police custody. The
- 41:30Speaker 1: city of Wichita exhaled, knowing that they were finally caught.
- 41:36Speaker 1: And that's where we're going to stop the episode for
- 41:38Speaker 1: part one.
- 41:40Speaker 2: Of course, of course it is I have like so
- 41:42Speaker 2: many questions and shit, but okay.
- 41:44Speaker 1: Okay, there's a lot to cover. Don't worry, y' there is, yeah,
- 41:47Speaker 1: questions answered.
- 41:48Speaker 2: Well, and it's also like, fuck these guys, I don't
- 41:50Speaker 2: want to hear about them again. But okay, yeah, I
- 41:54Speaker 2: also like I kind of hope that Holly, I don't know,
- 41:57Speaker 2: in a way like gets that engagement ring still, you know.
- 42:00Speaker 2: But also it wouldn't mean it much not coming from
- 42:04Speaker 2: like her boyfriend, so.
- 42:07Speaker 1: Well, I mean it came from him still, he got.
- 42:11Speaker 2: It for I know. But gosh, this is just like devastating.
- 42:15Speaker 1: Yeah, it's a heavy case. And oh my god, these
- 42:18Speaker 1: guys are fucking monsters.
- 42:20Speaker 2: So twenty and twenty two correct, and the one guy
- 42:25Speaker 2: out of freak, well they both had girlfriends.
- 42:27Speaker 1: Yeah, and like.
- 42:28Speaker 2: Oh, okay, okay, yeah, I'll I'll just say that I
- 42:31Speaker 2: won't go any further.
- 42:33Speaker 1: Just breathe, breathe.
- 42:35Speaker 2: Well, I hope you have a good day.
