- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Spanish with Fexingo. I am Lucas. Luna: And I am Luna. We are ready to cook something up today. Lucas: Last episode we talked about cooking verbs. Today we talk about the tools. Luna: Yes. The things we hold in our hands. Let's start with the knife. Lucas: The knife is el cuchillo. Say it slowly: el cuchillo. Luna: El cuchillo. Lucas: Good. El cuchillo. It is a sharp tool. Luna: I have a big knife at home. A large el cuchillo. Lucas: Perfect. Remember: el cuchillo. Now, what do we eat with? Luna: We use a spoon. La cuchara. Lucas: Exactly. La cuchara. Listen: la cuchara. Luna: La cuchara. Lucas: Very good. La cuchara. For soup or for stirring coffee. Luna: I use a small la cuchara for my tea every morning. Lucas: Nice. So we have el cuchillo and la cuchara. What do we put the food on? Luna: On a plate. El plato. Lucas: Right. El plato. Repeat: el plato. Luna: El plato. Lucas: Excellent. El plato. Your lunch goes on el plato. Luna: My favorite is a white el plato. Very clean looking. Lucas: Okay. We have three items. Knife, spoon, plate. But wait. Luna: What? Is there more? Lucas: There is always more. What if I lose my fork? Luna: Oh no. Where is the fork? Lucas: We ask: ¿Dónde está el tenedor? Luna: ¿Dónde está el tenedor? Lucas: Let's break that down. ¿Dónde está...? That means where is it. Luna: And el tenedor is the fork. Lucas: Correct. ¿Dónde está el tenedor? Practice it with me. Luna: ¿Dónde está el tenedor? Lucas: You said it perfectly. ¿Dónde está el tenedor? Luna: I hope it is not under the sofa. That would be silly. Lucas: It might be. Now, imagine we are having wine. Luna: Oh, yes. Wine needs a glass. Or a cup. Lucas: A drinking vessel. In Spanish, we can say una copa for a wine glass. Luna: Una copa. Lucas: Say it: una copa. Luna: Una copa. Lucas: Good. If I need one, I say: Necesito una copa. Luna: Necesito una copa. Lucas: Repeat after me. Necesito una copa. Luna: Necesito una copa. Lucas: That sounds very polite. And useful. Let's review all five phrases. Luna: Okay. First: el cuchillo. Lucas: El cuchillo. Luna: Second: la cuchara. Lucas: La cuchara. Luna: Third: el plato. Lucas: El plato. Luna: Fourth: ¿Dónde está el tenedor? Lucas: ¿Dónde está el tenedor? Luna: Fifth: Necesito una copa. Lucas: Necesito una copa. Luna: Wow. I feel like I can set a table right now. Lucas: You can. You know the knife, the spoon, the plate, the fork question, and the glass request. Luna: This is so helpful. I was confused about cups before. Lucas: Una taza is a mug. Una copa is a glass. Good distinction. Luna: I will remember that. Uno copa for wine. Lucas: Una copa. Yes. Small details make a big difference. Luna: Do you have a favorite kitchen tool? Lucas: I like a good el cuchillo. Sharp and steady. Luna: Me too. But I also love a warm el plato fresh from the oven. Lucas: That is a nice feeling. Warm plates. Luna: Absolutely. It keeps the food hot. Lucas: Okay. Let's try one more scene. You are at dinner. Luna: Okay. I look around. Oh no. Lucas: What happened? Luna: I cannot find my fork. ¿Dónde está el tenedor? Lucas: Under your napkin! Here. And here is your drink. Luna: Thanks! Ah, necesito una copa for this juice. Lucas: There you go. Una copa. Simple and clear. Luna: It really is. Learning these words makes me confident. Lucas: It does. Confidence comes from practice. Keep saying them. Luna: I will. El cuchillo. La cuchara. El plato. Lucas: Perfect repetition. That helps your memory stick. Luna: Thanks, Lucas. This was fun. Lucas: It was. Before we go, a quick note for our listeners. Luna: Yes.
