- 0:01Speaker 1: Coming up on this week's episode of Hip Hop Now podcast,
- 0:06Speaker 1: j Cole drops a new single and the internet is
- 0:10Speaker 1: already talking. My thoughts on a new album from Smith
- 0:14Speaker 1: and Wesson, produced by Ninth Wonder Infinity and My reaction
- 0:20Speaker 1: to Hip Hop DX is ranking of Alchemist's collaborative albums.
- 0:26Speaker 2: Yeah no, I love a list. Nah I don't, but
- 0:32Speaker 2: let's do it. Welcome to hip Hop Now podcasts.
- 0:41Speaker 1: To do from the future, you know what to do
- 0:44Speaker 1: your ass out. Don't disrespect the leg like hip hop
- 0:51Speaker 1: is hey to today.
- 0:54Speaker 2: Escat rating to the business. What up, y'all?
- 0:57Speaker 1: I am your host Vegas and this is Hip How
- 1:00Speaker 1: podcasting podcast specifically designed to keep you caught up on
- 1:05Speaker 1: all things hip hop, music and culture that happened throughout
- 1:10Speaker 1: the week.
- 1:11Speaker 2: Big shout out to.
- 1:12Speaker 1: The subscribers, the supporters of this podcast and audio form. First,
- 1:17Speaker 1: whether you listen on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, whatever, Big
- 1:24Speaker 1: shout out to you, but also to those who.
- 1:27Speaker 2: Are watching right now on YouTube.
- 1:31Speaker 1: We are one hundred subscribers away from the annual goal.
- 1:37Speaker 1: Not the annual but the this year's goal of five
- 1:42Speaker 1: thousand subscribers, which is crazy because at one point I
- 1:47Speaker 1: was at like two thirty trying to get to five
- 1:49Speaker 1: hundred and now ahead of schedule, we are one hundred
- 1:56Speaker 1: subscribers away. So first and foremost, shout out to everybody
- 2:00Speaker 1: who helped to make that happen again, whether you watch
- 2:02Speaker 1: this weekly show, or you like our live streams or
- 2:06Speaker 1: special episodes, or the shorts that I frequently post.
- 2:11Speaker 2: And for those who you.
- 2:13Speaker 1: Know aren't aware, essentially I do the same thing on
- 2:17Speaker 1: Instagram as far as the shorts, you know, I see
- 2:21Speaker 1: dope hip hop content or funny hip hop content. I reshare,
- 2:26Speaker 1: I don't crop out somebody's name who created the original.
- 2:30Speaker 1: And let me just say this right, just real quick,
- 2:33Speaker 1: because content creators can be crazy. They could be obnoxious.
- 2:36Speaker 1: They think they are the same as they see in
- 2:40Speaker 1: here in media.
- 2:43Speaker 2: Some of you are. Some of you're not.
- 2:46Speaker 1: Anybody getting upset because they posted let's just say, a
- 2:53Speaker 1: hip hop video from the past and they tagged it
- 2:55Speaker 1: with their tag. You are not the sole proprietor of
- 3:00Speaker 1: that content. You didn't shoot that video, you don't own
- 3:03Speaker 1: the rights to that video. You did what I could do.
- 3:07Speaker 1: We all can go to vvo whatever it is and
- 3:10Speaker 1: pick a classic album and type some words over it.
- 3:14Speaker 1: Like remember this y'all and put my tag on it.
- 3:17Speaker 1: It does not belong to me. So my way of
- 3:20Speaker 1: sharing the content wealth is I don't crop out nobody's
- 3:26Speaker 1: you know, imprints or anything like that. Because I saw
- 3:30Speaker 1: it on their page, I thought it was dope. I
- 3:32Speaker 1: felt like I should share it with others now when
- 3:35Speaker 1: I create my original content. Okay, now we're talking. So
- 3:39Speaker 1: that was that. But for those who are keeping score
- 3:45Speaker 1: here on Hip Hop Now podcasts for years now, because
- 3:52Speaker 1: twenty twenty five is my ninth year of doing this podcast, right,
- 3:59Speaker 1: I don't do interview And there's a big reason why
- 4:02Speaker 1: I don't do interviews, because everybody does interviews, and I
- 4:08Speaker 1: didn't see a point for you to see me interview
- 4:11Speaker 1: somebody who you've already watched on matth Hoffa's podcast, on
- 4:16Speaker 1: Drink Champs, on somebody else's podcast, like it's a chase,
- 4:23Speaker 1: and a lot of times the conversations are exactly the same.
- 4:26Speaker 2: Obviously, my questions could be.
- 4:28Speaker 1: Different, making for a better and a different maybe not better,
- 4:31Speaker 1: but just a different interview. But I don't want to
- 4:35Speaker 1: play that game. Some people are getting paid for interviews,
- 4:39Speaker 1: more power to you. I ain't got the money for you, fam.
- 4:41Speaker 1: But what I do have is a special set of
- 4:45Speaker 1: skills that I've acquired as a Morgan State University alumni
- 4:51Speaker 1: who has been doing radio since I was still in
- 4:54Speaker 1: class on the FM dow not the student stage. No, No,
- 5:00Speaker 1: So I am looking and I tested it last year
- 5:05Speaker 1: and I think was it last year? I guess, so
- 5:10Speaker 1: I think that was last year or early this year,
- 5:12Speaker 1: whatever it was. No, it was early last year because
- 5:15Speaker 1: it was it was around because Kendrick dropped and it
- 5:18Speaker 1: was like conversation went elsewhere. But I tested those grounds
- 5:23Speaker 1: of interviewing with my interview with the writer Marcus J. Moore,
- 5:29Speaker 1: who wrote the book about day La Soul, and then
- 5:31Speaker 1: day Soul was like, Yo, don't buy that book, and
- 5:34Speaker 1: then everybody kind of jumped on Daylat Soul like, well
- 5:38Speaker 1: you never read the book, blah blah blah, and then
- 5:40Speaker 1: Kendrick dropped it in the White cat right. But for
- 5:43Speaker 1: this channel, it did pretty well as far as an episode,
- 5:47Speaker 1: I thought we got a lot of dope insight into
- 5:50Speaker 1: the book, into the author, and just in general talking
- 5:54Speaker 1: about hip hop.
- 5:55Speaker 2: So I'm going to.
- 5:55Speaker 1: Continue to do interviews, but they will be very specific
- 6:02Speaker 1: interviews that I feel like I can get a lot
- 6:05Speaker 1: out of the interview. We right, and what I mean
- 6:10Speaker 1: by that, and we're gonna get into the stories. But
- 6:12Speaker 1: what I mean by that is I want these interviews
- 6:17Speaker 1: and the people I choose to be super interesting.
- 6:20Speaker 2: To my audience. Right, excuse me.
- 6:24Speaker 1: So if I'm interviewing an author Dai La Soul never
- 6:29Speaker 1: had a book up until this point, right, and you
- 6:31Speaker 1: saw everything that happened to me, that's an interesting conversation
- 6:36Speaker 1: to have about hip hop, about a group we love.
- 6:39Speaker 2: Right.
- 6:40Speaker 1: When it comes to artists, right, everybody drops music all
- 6:44Speaker 1: the time, even I drop music, But everybody drops music.
- 6:47Speaker 1: Everybody has an album, everybody has an EP, everybody has
- 6:50Speaker 1: multiple projects.
- 6:51Speaker 2: Dropping It doesn't mean any of it's bad.
- 6:54Speaker 1: It doesn't mean me choosing that guy over this guy
- 6:57Speaker 1: is how it's going. No, It's about the rising of
- 7:04Speaker 1: the individual as a musician or artist or whatever, and
- 7:08Speaker 1: I feel like they will be a very potent conversation
- 7:13Speaker 1: to be had with that individual. So I'm not gonna
- 7:17Speaker 1: do a ton of interviews, but over the course of
- 7:19Speaker 1: twenty twenty.
- 7:20Speaker 2: Five, let's just say maybe I do five in.
- 7:22Speaker 1: Total, they will be interviews that makes sense Regarding the
- 7:28Speaker 1: timing and the music, and then they may be interviews
- 7:32Speaker 1: for other reasons, right, films, whatever it may be. So
- 7:36Speaker 1: stay tuned to the channel on audio forms subscribed obviously.
- 7:41Speaker 2: And definitely here on YouTube if you want to check
- 7:43Speaker 2: that out.
- 7:44Speaker 1: Big shout out to hip hopdx dot com, where I'm
- 7:48Speaker 1: probably getting most of these stories from. So that's what
- 7:51Speaker 1: it is this week. Let's get right to the business, though.
- 7:55Speaker 1: Say J Cole just dropped a brand new single called Clouds.
- 8:07Speaker 1: For those who aren't watching this on YouTube, the C
- 8:13Speaker 1: in the word cloud is small and s.
- 8:17Speaker 2: At the end clouds.
- 8:19Speaker 1: It's small lowercase also, but loud is all uppercase, which
- 8:24Speaker 1: is pretty dope to look at. He basically reflects on
- 8:30Speaker 1: a couple of things. But quite honestly, this is the
- 8:34Speaker 1: J Cole subject matter I want. Hip Hop DX really
- 8:40Speaker 1: summarized it, you know, they said J Cole reflects on
- 8:43Speaker 1: AI agent and Trump assassination temp even though that was
- 8:47Speaker 1: just like a bar.
- 8:49Speaker 2: I don't think he said too much about it unless
- 8:51Speaker 2: I missed it.
- 8:55Speaker 1: The track itself, my opinion, having listened to it a
- 8:58Speaker 1: couple of times right now, and it permitted on his
- 9:03Speaker 1: blog that he has now I believe it's called algorithm.
- 9:10Speaker 2: I like it.
- 9:12Speaker 1: Let's just get it out the way I like it.
- 9:16Speaker 1: J Coole rapping has never been up for debate. He's
- 9:19Speaker 1: never been waged to me. Ever, Duck in the Battle
- 9:25Speaker 1: rubbed me the wrong way because of how he used
- 9:28Speaker 1: to talk prior to the battle, right throwing subs I'm
- 9:33Speaker 1: top five and number three, I'm the one, I'm the greatest,
- 9:36Speaker 1: I'm the goat, all this different talk. And when confronted
- 9:41Speaker 1: with a battle that you were kind of like a
- 9:46Speaker 1: part of right.
- 9:47Speaker 2: Because you weren't innocent.
- 9:49Speaker 1: It wasn't all Aubrey right, first person shooting and other things.
- 9:54Speaker 1: So and then you put out a a dis record
- 9:58Speaker 1: that was Luke for somebody who is dope as he is,
- 10:04Speaker 1: And so he bowed out the battle. Then, you know,
- 10:08Speaker 1: not that long ago, he came back with a song
- 10:10Speaker 1: that was essentially apologizing to Drake and Kendrick in some regards,
- 10:16Speaker 1: and it just rubbed people the wrong way, brought the
- 10:19Speaker 1: apology back up, and people started jumping on it. Now
- 10:25Speaker 1: with clouds, he's just rapping about other things that are
- 10:30Speaker 1: happening around us, happening to him, reflections and I like it.
- 10:36Speaker 2: Now?
- 10:37Speaker 1: Is it the first single from the fall Off that
- 10:42Speaker 1: would make you hype for the album. No, I think
- 10:44Speaker 1: it's just something to put out their tests to say
- 10:48Speaker 1: is it safe to come outside.
- 10:51Speaker 2: Kendrick in the house yet?
- 10:55Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying, Like it's but to me,
- 10:58Speaker 1: it's about timing, right, same thing with Drake.
- 11:01Speaker 2: He dropped that album with what's his name? Party next Door.
- 11:04Speaker 1: I think I was called Playboy Carti before My Bad,
- 11:07Speaker 1: but Party next Door after the super Bowl, right, So
- 11:13Speaker 1: the conversation was and it was on Valentine's Day, like,
- 11:16Speaker 1: so the conversation was more about whether that album was
- 11:19Speaker 1: good or not.
- 11:19Speaker 2: Most people don't.
- 11:21Speaker 1: Like it, but at least at least it doesn't bring
- 11:26Speaker 1: the battle back to square one, like when he was
- 11:29Speaker 1: taking all these direct shots, right, stop talking about Kendrick,
- 11:33Speaker 1: stopped talking about the battle. So with J Cole, that's
- 11:35Speaker 1: what he's doing here. He's focusing on other things. There's
- 11:38Speaker 1: so many other things that he could focus on that
- 11:41Speaker 1: he has the knowledge, right, the awareness, and more importantly,
- 11:46Speaker 1: the lyrical skill to do it in a very dope way.
- 11:51Speaker 1: So I like this song Klaud's by J Cole. I'm
- 11:55Speaker 1: looking forward to seeing what the Falloff is as an hour. Honestly,
- 12:01Speaker 1: I have high expectations for it because I think it'll
- 12:04Speaker 1: be dope. He's the kind of artist I like to
- 12:07Speaker 1: listen to because he's a thought for artist. He doesn't
- 12:09Speaker 1: just say things to say things. This is kind of
- 12:13Speaker 1: like where he is, and some of it is relatable
- 12:17Speaker 1: for me. Now the Internet, on the other hand, and
- 12:20Speaker 1: their reaction to it. Speaking to Jake Cole stands, I'm
- 12:28Speaker 1: a fan, and I know everybody says that about themselves.
- 12:31Speaker 2: I'm a fan. I'm not a stand I'm a fan.
- 12:34Speaker 1: Some of your actions speak louder than your words, man, Okay,
- 12:38Speaker 1: got to back them up. And I feel like some
- 12:41Speaker 1: stands because Jake Cole is choosing not to in this instance,
- 12:48Speaker 1: to even mention that battle, to even mention Kendrick.
- 12:52Speaker 2: Doing whatever they're trying to bring up the battle.
- 12:56Speaker 1: Now, I saw a tweet where a dude and I
- 12:59Speaker 1: don't have it, so I'm not quoting him, but this
- 13:03Speaker 1: is essentially what he said. I think that battle would
- 13:07Speaker 1: have turned out very differently had j Cole engaged Kendrick
- 13:13Speaker 1: engaged Kendrick. And this is where I'm tired of, y'all.
- 13:19Speaker 1: I'm just tired of y'all.
- 13:20Speaker 2: Okay, it was fun, not like us was fun.
- 13:23Speaker 1: But the Super Bowl was like game over, like most
- 13:26Speaker 1: of us were already done.
- 13:28Speaker 2: So to me, if you want.
- 13:29Speaker 1: A continuation of what Kendrick did to Aubrey and that
- 13:33Speaker 1: whole thing, just go to the tour, okay. But as
- 13:36Speaker 1: far as the conversation in twenty twenty five, that was
- 13:40Speaker 1: last year though, And to say like that tweet said,
- 13:45Speaker 1: to say like.
- 13:48Speaker 2: He was like, I think he said something like Kendrick
- 13:51Speaker 2: was spared.
- 13:52Speaker 1: It seems so stupid because you're really trying to rewrite
- 13:56Speaker 1: history as quick as possible as if we weren't all there.
- 14:02Speaker 2: Let's just state one last time, for j Cole's sake,
- 14:08Speaker 2: what happened.
- 14:10Speaker 1: Jaco put out a disc record responding to Kendrick's verse
- 14:16Speaker 1: on like that called seven Minute Drill. I think that
- 14:20Speaker 1: was the name of it, and most people thought it
- 14:23Speaker 1: was mid, especially because he was saying things about Kendrick's
- 14:27Speaker 1: music that most people disagree about right now. They don't
- 14:32Speaker 1: get me wrong, there are a lot of people who
- 14:33Speaker 1: don't even like Kendrick let alone. You know, they don't
- 14:37Speaker 1: like anything beyond good kid mass City or it's good
- 14:41Speaker 1: kid Man City. And damn right, who thought missed them
- 14:45Speaker 1: around the big Steppers wasn't good?
- 14:49Speaker 2: Like it's all hype.
- 14:52Speaker 1: And when J Cole caught win that everybody wasn't like,
- 14:58Speaker 1: Oh old crazy Kendrick got problems. Then you see him
- 15:03Speaker 1: apologizing on stage, and not only that, he pulls the
- 15:07Speaker 1: record from his mixtape. Might delete later. Now we all
- 15:13Speaker 1: heard it, it happened. You might as well have left
- 15:15Speaker 1: it there. But I get it. You know, he said
- 15:17Speaker 1: he didn't want to go at his brother. So my
- 15:20Speaker 1: thing is, you can't say what a guy would have
- 15:23Speaker 1: done when he ran from the fight. If he ain't run,
- 15:30Speaker 1: he would have did the work. No, he wasn't gonna
- 15:32Speaker 1: do anything. He ain't want no work. Okay, so let's
- 15:37Speaker 1: stop trying to rewrite history. It's okay to enjoy and
- 15:41Speaker 1: like the song and the fact that you feel like
- 15:45Speaker 1: J Cole is back on track to where he was
- 15:48Speaker 1: prior to the battle. There's nothing wrong with that. But
- 15:51Speaker 1: let's not start going back and saying that didn't happen.
- 15:55Speaker 2: It did. Were in a different time now.
- 15:58Speaker 1: Man, the minute you say that, I'm not even gonna
- 16:01Speaker 1: ar y'all just send you a link of him apologizing,
- 16:04Speaker 1: like I'm a ticket on the chin.
- 16:05Speaker 2: Man.
- 16:06Speaker 1: You know, whatever you got, man, go take your best shot.
- 16:09Speaker 1: But I don't want to use a brother. You know
- 16:10Speaker 1: I would have lost the backup. But shut up rap
- 16:15Speaker 1: about this. So those who you know are mad at
- 16:21Speaker 1: J Cole, but you shouldn't be mad at but whatever,
- 16:25Speaker 1: now's your time to step back into the J.
- 16:28Speaker 2: Cole arena.
- 16:29Speaker 1: This is a dope record. The bars are dope. I
- 16:32Speaker 1: like everything he's saying. It's it makes me want that album.
- 16:36Speaker 1: So there you had that. Speaking of albums recently, very
- 16:45Speaker 1: recent as in Right Now, Smith and Wesson legendary Brooklyn
- 16:51Speaker 1: hip hop group duo Smith and Wesson who debuted It
- 16:56Speaker 1: Who with a classic album in the nineties called The
- 17:01Speaker 1: Shining Check it out if you haven't have a brand
- 17:05Speaker 1: new album entitled Infinity and produced by Ninth Wonder and
- 17:11Speaker 1: The Soul Council. This album comes in at fourteen songs.
- 17:18Speaker 1: The length is forty six minutes and thirty four seconds.
- 17:21Speaker 2: My kind of album. You know what I'm saying.
- 17:24Speaker 1: Make it short and sweet, please pous or whatever, and
- 17:29Speaker 1: features a number of people right like mouth Tresident is
- 17:32Speaker 1: on here, Prodigy, Pharaoh Munch, Conway, the Machine Sean Price,
- 17:40Speaker 1: Buckshot this it's some features on this joint, you know, Recipe,
- 17:45Speaker 1: Prodigy and Sean Price. And here's my verdict, right, always
- 17:54Speaker 1: gotta do this for new people because if you're new, welcome,
- 17:56Speaker 1: you don't know this. So I'm gonna just let you know.
- 17:58Speaker 1: This is the qualifier for my opinion of this review
- 18:02Speaker 1: of this album Infinity Smiff and Wesson formerly known as
- 18:07Speaker 1: the Cocho Brothers, formerly known as Smith and Wesson, Act whatever.
- 18:11Speaker 1: But I give you three listens typically when I'm in
- 18:15Speaker 1: the gym working out. The first listen is just to
- 18:17Speaker 1: my impressions, my first impressions of the album. The second
- 18:21Speaker 1: listen is now to digging deep and can you know,
- 18:25Speaker 1: kind of listen to the lyrics more intently, listen to
- 18:29Speaker 1: what's happening with the production and how everything comes together,
- 18:33Speaker 1: the features, all of that good stuff. And my third
- 18:35Speaker 1: listen is just to confirm my thoughts. And for the
- 18:41Speaker 1: quick reviewers, here you go. If you are a fan
- 18:46Speaker 1: of the Shining and every Smith and Wesson album since
- 18:52Speaker 1: including Coco Brothers has been a let down, you won't
- 18:57Speaker 1: like this album. If you you are a person who
- 19:01Speaker 1: has been with Smith and Wesson from day one, and
- 19:04Speaker 1: you have a couple of albums in a catalog that
- 19:06Speaker 1: you like, especially if you like their last album, the All,
- 19:13Speaker 1: you'll like this album.
- 19:15Speaker 2: Me speaking about me personally, I have a problem, right.
- 19:23Speaker 1: I'm both fans, but I leaned heavier on the side
- 19:29Speaker 1: of the first fan I mentioned, which is The Shining
- 19:33Speaker 1: was so impactful for my life as far as hip
- 19:37Speaker 1: hop and especially jazzy sounding samples and that kind of
- 19:42Speaker 1: ambiance during that age, the Philly blunt age of New
- 19:46Speaker 1: York style rap or whatever. It has been extremely difficult
- 19:52Speaker 1: throughout the years for me to really like a Smith
- 19:57Speaker 1: and Wesson album that doesn't feel like that one The
- 20:03Speaker 1: Shining was, So I put it this way. The way
- 20:07Speaker 1: I feel about The Shining and Smith and Wesson going
- 20:09Speaker 1: forward is how some people feel about Illmatic and Nod's
- 20:13Speaker 1: going forward. There's some people who wanted Illmatic every time, right,
- 20:18Speaker 1: which is unrealistic people grow. I'm like that with Smith
- 20:23Speaker 1: and Wesson. I wanted that sound to return. I didn't
- 20:29Speaker 1: mind that they went, you know, and got different production
- 20:33Speaker 1: and tried different things, because I always felt like there's
- 20:37Speaker 1: no way that they're not still those dudes that I remember, and.
- 20:44Speaker 2: Throughout the years, I've had to accept that they.
- 20:47Speaker 1: Are grown men who have grown and became a little
- 20:52Speaker 1: bit different from that time. You know, who knows, maybe
- 20:55Speaker 1: they were like yo, I was blunted all the time
- 20:57Speaker 1: when when we did the Shining. Now I'm a little
- 20:59Speaker 1: bit I still smoke, but I'm a little bit more
- 21:01Speaker 1: clear with it. I feel like this album is the
- 21:06Speaker 1: all too right. If you like their album and I
- 21:09Speaker 1: believe ninth one that did that one also, but or
- 21:13Speaker 1: he done a number of tracks on him. But if
- 21:16Speaker 1: you heard that album All which was I believe that
- 21:19Speaker 1: year released, I had it as one of the best
- 21:22Speaker 1: of the year. It's a different Smith and Wesson lyrically
- 21:28Speaker 1: musically on this particular album, Infinity. The production is hit
- 21:35Speaker 1: or miss with me. And it's not when I say
- 21:37Speaker 1: hit a miss, I don't mean that tracks do that
- 21:40Speaker 1: track's garbage or that track's mid. I mean I don't
- 21:44Speaker 1: think Smith and Wesson like AZ can rap over everything
- 21:49Speaker 1: or put it this way. They could rap over anything,
- 21:52Speaker 1: but do they sound good over everything? And I feel
- 21:56Speaker 1: like they have a specific SI style that's sounds better
- 22:01Speaker 1: over different beats, like for example. And this might just
- 22:05Speaker 1: be my taste in music, but the song Just Stayed
- 22:10Speaker 1: featuring Conway the Machine that kind of production works to me,
- 22:16Speaker 1: Elephant in the Room that feels like the Shan and
- 22:20Speaker 1: Smith and Wesson to me, a song called Infinity and
- 22:25Speaker 1: Moses Prompt Moses's Promise, like Medina featuring Pharaoh manch Like.
- 22:32Speaker 1: These songs feel like Smith and Wesson but upgraded. But
- 22:38Speaker 1: I think what really drags the album down. And again,
- 22:43Speaker 1: for some people, this might be what's all you want
- 22:46Speaker 1: to hear nowadays?
- 22:47Speaker 2: Right, you don't want to hear you don't want to.
- 22:49Speaker 1: Get shot at by listening to Griselda, and you want
- 22:52Speaker 1: to hear Coke Raps. I get it. But when did
- 22:57Speaker 1: Smith and Wesson just kind of become like inspirational speakers?
- 23:03Speaker 1: Because I swear the last maybe three projects and there's
- 23:08Speaker 1: nothing wrong with this, Trust me when I say there's
- 23:11Speaker 1: nothing wrong with this, But it's.
- 23:15Speaker 2: Not how I was introduced to the group.
- 23:18Speaker 1: And sure, they were much younger, and you know, talking
- 23:23Speaker 1: about some of those things. You know, maybe they've moved
- 23:25Speaker 1: on from that. Sure, but in some cases on this album, no,
- 23:29Speaker 1: they say some of the same things, right, it's just different.
- 23:34Speaker 1: But I just don't identify that with this group. And
- 23:38Speaker 1: I don't feel like musically it's so good that I
- 23:43Speaker 1: can accept that. Ah, they're just different now. And I've
- 23:47Speaker 1: heard a number of albums where, especially to All, where
- 23:51Speaker 1: they were kind of on that like yo, we're older
- 23:53Speaker 1: and went Peace and Church and like Imminence, and I'm
- 23:59Speaker 1: with it. But it's just something about what Smith and
- 24:04Speaker 1: Weston represents when you hear their names. So I said
- 24:08Speaker 1: all that to say I still think so far in
- 24:12Speaker 1: twenty twenty five it is one of the better albums
- 24:15Speaker 1: because it's not a bad album at all. But I
- 24:18Speaker 1: think if you are like me and you know, you
- 24:23Speaker 1: don't expect them to be the Shining which was their debut,
- 24:27Speaker 1: Like what was that thirty years ago or whatever, that's
- 24:31Speaker 1: part for the course for anybody, right. Prince in his
- 24:35Speaker 1: later years he wasn't making albums he was making he
- 24:38Speaker 1: was younger, not at all lyrically, musically, none of that.
- 24:43Speaker 1: But that's the reason why most fans from those times
- 24:47Speaker 1: didn't really check for some of that stuff. Same thing
- 24:50Speaker 1: with Stevie Wonder. We know Stevie Wonder is to go,
- 24:52Speaker 1: but that's because we keep spending the same albums from
- 24:54Speaker 1: the seventies.
- 24:57Speaker 2: Stevie's released way more than that, you know.
- 25:00Speaker 1: After the seventies, but there was a change lyrically musically
- 25:06Speaker 1: he could still sing. But that's how I feel with
- 25:08Speaker 1: Smith and Wesson. They could still rap still Smith and Wesson.
- 25:12Speaker 1: You put them under the right beat, they still go off,
- 25:16Speaker 1: but there's always something left that I'm not I don't
- 25:23Speaker 1: leave fulfilled. Basically, as a Smith and Wesson fan, one
- 25:27Speaker 1: thing I might do is like go back down the
- 25:30Speaker 1: rabbit hole Smith and Wesson albums, because there's some albums
- 25:32Speaker 1: that I heard, like maybe in the two thousands that
- 25:36Speaker 1: I just don't remember. I would do a tail list,
- 25:40Speaker 1: but I don't know how many people care about Smith
- 25:42Speaker 1: and Wesson today to even bother to watch that, But
- 25:46Speaker 1: I think it would be interesting because again, they released
- 25:49Speaker 1: a number of albums, and honestly, I don't feel comfortable
- 25:54Speaker 1: calling a catalog mid or whack except for the one
- 25:57Speaker 1: album because I don't remember but most of it.
- 26:00Speaker 2: But I know what they have now is.
- 26:06Speaker 1: Good enough for newcomers to Smith and Weston's catalog, but
- 26:12Speaker 1: for old heads like me who kind of want that
- 26:16Speaker 1: beat minors jazzy influenced Smith, Smith and Wesson's situation. They
- 26:22Speaker 1: could even still almost talk about some of the same stuff.
- 26:26Speaker 1: I don't think. I don't think these newer albums are it.
- 26:31Speaker 1: Con Way the Machine definitely has a standout verse on
- 26:34Speaker 1: in him and honestly Sean Price and Barrel manch But
- 26:41Speaker 1: there you have it. What do you think about Smith
- 26:43Speaker 1: and Wesson's brand new album Infinity, produced by Ninth Wonder
- 26:48Speaker 1: and the Soul Council, So they got a true enough
- 26:52Speaker 1: production team behind them. Do you feel the way I feel?
- 26:55Speaker 1: Or has Smith and Wesson done this so much?
- 26:59Speaker 2: Now?
- 27:00Speaker 1: Well, this is more of their identity than what I
- 27:03Speaker 1: remember from the Shining Leave your comments in a comments
- 27:06Speaker 1: section below. And lastly, so hip Hop DX did basically
- 27:17Speaker 1: a top ten list of the Alchemists ten best collaborative
- 27:23Speaker 1: albums ranked. Now, some of you don't even know like
- 27:28Speaker 1: collaborative out But I thought he was just a producer. Yes,
- 27:31Speaker 1: but he's been doing for years. He's been doing other
- 27:34Speaker 1: stuff and he's made a name for himself. Really when
- 27:38Speaker 1: you talk about not just what he did with Mob
- 27:41Speaker 1: Deep in the late nineties, mid to late nineties or whatever,
- 27:46Speaker 1: but what he was able to do during the blog era,
- 27:49Speaker 1: because that's when Alchemists really came up, Like during the
- 27:52Speaker 1: blog era, the mix, that mixtape eerr.
- 27:55Speaker 2: So there's a history there.
- 27:57Speaker 1: So we're just gonna look at what they have in
- 28:00Speaker 1: the top ten and I'm gonna react. Now some albums
- 28:04Speaker 1: maybe I've never heard them or I forgot, but we're
- 28:09Speaker 1: gonna do it. At number ten, they have no idols.
- 28:12Speaker 1: With Domo Genesis, I do remember this, and I remember
- 28:18Speaker 1: this was from twenty twenty, twenty twelve.
- 28:22Speaker 2: I remember this joint and it was cool.
- 28:24Speaker 1: But I'm not the biggest fan of Demo Genesis, so
- 28:29Speaker 1: you know, maybe maybe you liked it. Ran Chandeliers at
- 28:33Speaker 1: number nine with Action Bronson twenty twelve. This is when
- 28:37Speaker 1: I refused to listen to Action Bronson because I was like,
- 28:41Speaker 1: he is diet ghost Face. Later on I got into him.
- 28:46Speaker 1: So with this project, I heard it, but I was distracted.
- 28:51Speaker 1: I ain't gonna lie. I ain't gonna lie. At number
- 28:54Speaker 1: eight Fetti with Freddie Gibbs in Currency twenty eighteen. I
- 28:58Speaker 1: didn't even know a lot of people like this because
- 29:00Speaker 1: when it came out, it felt like most fans of
- 29:04Speaker 1: Currency and Freddie Gibbs and Alchemists felt like it was mad.
- 29:09Speaker 1: It was okay, but when you think about that combination,
- 29:12Speaker 1: it should have been better, but apparently more people liked
- 29:16Speaker 1: it than I thought. But that's not a bad pick.
- 29:19Speaker 1: I would definitely keep that in ma Voyd Dyer, I
- 29:24Speaker 1: believe that's how you pronounce it. With Earl Sweatshirt in
- 29:27Speaker 1: twenty twenty three. Yeah, I heard this. I adn't really
- 29:32Speaker 1: care for it that much, and it didn't have much
- 29:35Speaker 1: to do with Alchemist Beats as much as it had
- 29:38Speaker 1: to do with his beat and Earl Sweatshirt.
- 29:42Speaker 2: It was the.
- 29:42Speaker 1: Most disinterested Ramen and beat Megan I've ever heard. But
- 29:48Speaker 1: some people love it because they love Earl Sweatshirt, so
- 29:50Speaker 1: I ain't manage you. Number six The Greatest Scape with
- 29:54Speaker 1: Larry June twenty twenty three. This isn't the Larry June project.
- 29:59Speaker 1: I Like, I'm not a big fan of Larry June,
- 30:01Speaker 1: but when I heard this, I was like, everything about this,
- 30:05Speaker 1: from the album cover to some of the beats I
- 30:09Speaker 1: heard on here should be something that I love and
- 30:12Speaker 1: I probably played it death, but it just wasn't.
- 30:15Speaker 2: It wasn't. It wasn't doing it for me. I'm sorry.
- 30:19Speaker 1: Larry June is in a quiet taste. Just know that,
- 30:22Speaker 1: don't just why you ain't like that the dog? How
- 30:26Speaker 1: am I going to be interested if he sounds this interesting?
- 30:30Speaker 1: So that was that number five. We're getting into the
- 30:33Speaker 1: top five now Return of the Mac with Prodigy two
- 30:37Speaker 1: thousand and seven. I agree with this, but there's another
- 30:42Speaker 1: project that I think either should have replaced this or
- 30:46Speaker 1: at least been on this list with it. If they
- 30:50Speaker 1: were keeping it down to one per collaborator, then I
- 30:52Speaker 1: get it. Return of the Mac was dope, But I
- 30:57Speaker 1: think Albert Einstein been number four. The Prince of the
- 31:02Speaker 1: Price of Tea in China with Body James twenty twenty.
- 31:07Speaker 2: Nah'd be I get it.
- 31:11Speaker 1: This disinterested style of rapping is in for the underground
- 31:18Speaker 1: hands right, earl sweatshirt, Larry June, Body James, and they'll
- 31:25Speaker 1: try one. Dude's like, I like the slick talk, but
- 31:27Speaker 1: I'm not hearing sleck bars like that.
- 31:29Speaker 2: I'm hearing like you can quote a bar from them.
- 31:33Speaker 1: But most of the time it's like all picked up
- 31:35Speaker 1: my hat where I'm going, I'm put my hat back down?
- 31:39Speaker 1: Where you going? Like dog, that's not bars. Just say
- 31:43Speaker 1: you like his flow and you like these beats. It's
- 31:50Speaker 1: a mood, it's a vibe. I get that part of it.
- 31:53Speaker 1: I get that part of it. I'm not gonna deny
- 31:55Speaker 1: you on that, but don't convince me that they rap
- 31:58Speaker 1: and rapping they bar No, sorry, but a lot of
- 32:05Speaker 1: people like that joints, so it doesn't matter if I
- 32:06Speaker 1: liked it. The Elephant Man's Bones with Rock Marciano in
- 32:11Speaker 1: twenty twenty two. Man, I swear I'm not hating on this,
- 32:14Speaker 1: lest y'all know. I'm not the biggest Rock Marcie fan.
- 32:18Speaker 1: I like what I like from him, don't get me wrong.
- 32:21Speaker 1: And unlike the other people I mentioned, he does have
- 32:24Speaker 1: bars occasionally. He will have bars, more so in his
- 32:28Speaker 1: early days than now. And when I heard this project,
- 32:32Speaker 1: I was trying my best to like, I might listen
- 32:35Speaker 1: to this joint like ten times, just trying to like, Yo,
- 32:38Speaker 1: what if let me just vibe out this hit press play.
- 32:43Speaker 2: Nah, this wasn't it.
- 32:44Speaker 1: And I like the production definitely on this one, but
- 32:49Speaker 1: it wasn't that great to me.
- 32:50Speaker 2: But it's considered to be one of the better.
- 32:54Speaker 1: Projects from Rock Marcye and Alchemists, So not mad at
- 32:59Speaker 1: it being the three number two covert coup with Currency
- 33:03Speaker 1: twenty eleven.
- 33:04Speaker 2: Now we talk production wise, Alchemist was in his bag,
- 33:11Speaker 2: and Currency tends to kind of be in that same lane. Right.
- 33:17Speaker 1: Everything with him is being high, but at least he's
- 33:19Speaker 1: saying it okay, So he's not this interested. He's just high, right,
- 33:26Speaker 1: And I felt like Currency was spitting. That's why they
- 33:29Speaker 1: call him spitting. I felt like he was spitting. His
- 33:31Speaker 1: energy was different. For most Currency projects, they don't typically
- 33:37Speaker 1: sound like this, right, but this is the bag he
- 33:40Speaker 1: can get in, and this is definitely top three, so
- 33:45Speaker 1: I don't disagree. Now, let's see what number one is.
- 33:47Speaker 1: Well I should have known now. Number one is Alfredo
- 33:52Speaker 1: with Freddy Gibbs twenty twenty. When I first heard this project,
- 33:57Speaker 1: I was a little disappointed.
- 33:59Speaker 2: Because of the beats. Freddie Gibbs don't.
- 34:03Speaker 1: Miss when it comes to the rhymeenh but the beats,
- 34:08Speaker 1: everything was so low key. It was like the Bodie
- 34:11Speaker 1: James and Larry Junes. It was like really and the
- 34:15Speaker 1: Earl sweatshirts. It was really draft. But then over time,
- 34:20Speaker 1: the more I listened to it, especially after that year,
- 34:24Speaker 1: I was like, nah, man, I mean, Freddy Gibbs doesn't
- 34:27Speaker 1: have to stay in the same pocket in order for
- 34:29Speaker 1: me to like this project, you know, what I'm saying.
- 34:33Speaker 1: I felt like Alchemists was pairing them with beats that
- 34:35Speaker 1: could have been better because my expectations were for something
- 34:39Speaker 1: better than what we got. But then the more I
- 34:43Speaker 1: listen to it, yeah, I would agree. So I wouldn't
- 34:48Speaker 1: make this number one on this list. I would keep
- 34:51Speaker 1: as far as the top five. I would keep the
- 34:53Speaker 1: joint with Currency for sure. I would add number three.
- 34:58Speaker 1: I think the Rock Marcies joint. I would take it out.
- 35:02Speaker 1: I mean, it could stay in the top ten, but
- 35:04Speaker 1: I would take it out. Maybe that's where I would
- 35:06Speaker 1: add a Prodigy and Albert Einstein joint.
- 35:09Speaker 2: I believe Alchemist did all the beats on there.
- 35:14Speaker 1: If I'm not mistaken, Body James, yup, you're definitely coming out.
- 35:18Speaker 1: I honestly liked the Larry June project that I didn't
- 35:22Speaker 1: care for that much more than this. I'd be more
- 35:25Speaker 1: willing to bring that into the top five, and then
- 35:27Speaker 1: the return of the Mac or Prodigy.
- 35:30Speaker 2: Still though, let me just see if there was something
- 35:32Speaker 2: else on the list that I would move up.
- 35:35Speaker 1: I think I would move up Fetti to the top five,
- 35:39Speaker 1: which just shows like my favorite collaborators with Alchemists are Prodigy,
- 35:47Speaker 1: Freddie Gibbs and currency.
- 35:50Speaker 2: Right, So there you have it.
- 35:54Speaker 1: What would you have in your top ten collaborative albums
- 35:59Speaker 1: by alchemists? Does it include any of these artists which
- 36:02Speaker 1: you shuffle the listen around? Is there some project that's missing?
- 36:06Speaker 1: Leave your comments in a comments section below. I read them,
- 36:08Speaker 1: I share them, I like them. You know I respond
