- 0:00Krekman and Lindau presented by Colorado off Road Colorado Grown, Colorado owned, Colorado
- 0:08off Road Online at COO off Road dot com, Altitude Sportswittio five. Yeah,
- 0:16look, we felt it was in the best interest of our team.
- 0:20And you know, now as we go forward, obviously we're in the middle
- 0:25of free agency, we're preparing for the draft. You know, we look
- 0:30both both of those avenues to to not only address quarterback, but to address
- 0:36the other spots on our team. I think the draft is one element and
- 0:42we're kind of in that phase now, and yet there's still a few possibilities
- 0:49relative to guys that are currently in this league or have played in this league.
- 0:53But yeah, I mean, I think that we've got a pretty good
- 0:59plan place, and we understand what we're doing and we're gonna be smart about
- 1:03it. That is Sean Peyton owners meeting today. Right now, we meet
- 1:11with Jeff Legwald on the ramos Law Hotline. Car Accident You need ramos Law
- 1:15Medical doctor and attorney ramos Law dot com before any Broncos stuff. Leggy,
- 1:21not a bad game last night there in Memphis. At any point did Kelvin
- 1:27Samson look over at you and ask you if you wanted to suit up for
- 1:30Houston. I was right a roll man. I had a few minutes in
- 1:34me. You a three corner three guy or what do you do? Are
- 1:38you the you know as a as a former Washington general, No, I
- 1:42can, uh, I can still sling it from the corner. Yeah,
- 1:47he's a power guard, is the That's how I described the game of Jeff
- 1:53Calvin said, I did. He was my spirit animal for a minute because
- 1:57he was talking about the walk and who had to play late right why they
- 2:02took him out right near the end of the game for defensive substitution. And
- 2:08he said something like he moves like me, like I love him. He
- 2:15was like, I love him, but he's he got my athleticism or something
- 2:20like that. So I thought that was pretty funny too. Anyway, now
- 2:23that Cam was that was amazing. I've seen a lot of hoops games.
- 2:27I've covered a lot of tournament games over the years, and I'm not sure
- 2:30I seen anything quite like that, just but you know, to be courtside
- 2:36for the raw intensity as one of the most intense basketball games I've ever seen
- 2:42pro or college. Just the level and that you know, despite all of
- 2:47the fouls. You know, Houston has four guys file out and another guy
- 2:52finished with four. But despite all those fouls, they let them play like
- 2:58crazy through the whole game. So if they had called it like some games
- 3:02are called, those guys would have been fouled out before halftime. I mean,
- 3:06the the buzzer beater obviously was amazing. It was incredible that A and
- 3:09M was even still in that game. The way that Shed played in overtime,
- 3:13I think Calvin Samson is a great, great in game coach. You're
- 3:17you're right, Like, I mean, a one ninety five overtime game for
- 3:22a trip to the Sweet sixteen like that, It's been one of the best
- 3:27games of the tournament. Like obviously we know see you Florida was awesome the
- 3:30other day, but maybe Houston and Texas A and M surpassed it for best
- 3:36game of the tournament. Just it was just a ferocious game. It was
- 3:39just ferocity in that game. I'll tell you, I I really liked Shed
- 3:46before I saw him up close like that, But the more I watched him
- 3:52play, the more I just thought he is everything you would want on your
- 3:58team and every fashion just a lot him with his teammates in between during play
- 4:02stoppages, and there are times when Samson just lets him coach on the floor,
- 4:10and just how he plays at both ends of the floor. I mean,
- 4:13the guy is just really you know, I'm no pro hoops guy,
- 4:18and you know, in terms of evaluation, but you know, he just
- 4:23looked like a nugget to me. I mean just the way he plays,
- 4:27shares the ball and all those things. And I guess selfish l'd like to
- 4:32see the local franchise find a place for him. So there you go,
- 4:35Calvin Booth, tune in Jeff Legwald offering up the scouting report right there.
- 4:41All right, Leggy, let's uh, let's delve into the your your actual
- 4:44scouting area of expertise, and that is quarterbacks. And boy, everybody's talking
- 4:50about quarterbacks today. At the owners meetings, Sean Payton used the word realistic.
- 4:57He says, it's realistic that the Denver Broncos could be trading up,
- 5:01to which I said, really, So I asked you, Jeff Lake,
- 5:04well, is it realistic that the Broncos could look to move up in the
- 5:10draft. I'm not sure how, and I'm not sure, uh, I
- 5:16mean, the way it's been explained to me, you know, both in
- 5:19house there and around the league, is that no one's really sure the teams
- 5:25with those picks are going to give them up, you know, especially you
- 5:29know beyond the number one. You know, I guess that's why everyone is
- 5:34looking at Arizona. You know. It's it's kind of that's the hot button
- 5:40right now. And I'm just gonna ask you this. I mean, I
- 5:45have and I'm not you know, I'm not all into let's make everything a
- 5:50nutty conspiracy theory. But I have spent a lot of time with Sean Payton,
- 5:57you know, in terms of the beat writer coach, and if they
- 6:01were really really interested in JJ McCarthy, do you think he would have offered
- 6:08that off. No, the answer is no, they're all lying right now.
- 6:15I am talking about you know, Kevin Seffert, who I work with,
- 6:19h was at the table in my stead today. Kevin Seafert sat in
- 6:25for me at Sean Payton's table this morning. So he was the one side
- 6:30I in Sean Payton the whole time. In essence, I was there,
- 6:33It's just Kevin was Kevin was handling business, you know, on Kevin's telling
- 6:40me, you know, oh yeah, he said they they've worked him out
- 6:45the day after his pro day. I just look, I get it.
- 6:48They Yes, they did that, and I will tell you they've done it
- 6:54with other quarterbacks on this board too, in some fashion. Whether Sean Payton
- 7:00was there or not would be different, but they have done that with other
- 7:04quarterbacks. They've done that with other players, And if they were truly truly
- 7:11interested in JJ McCarthy, I just don't know that he would just offer that
- 7:16up out of nowhere when I have had him tell me he wasn't going to
- 7:21tell me a hamstring injury I saw with my own eyes was actually a hamstring
- 7:29injury. So I just offer that up as a caveat for everyone. I
- 7:33think they want people to think they're interested in JJ McCarthy because I think they
- 7:40think that helps them do whatever it is they want to do with that pick.
- 7:45So you know, again, take any and all information from now until
- 7:50when the names start to go at your peril. It's all. And it's
- 7:59I say this every year because I think it has to top out at some
- 8:03point, but it's it's worse this year than in any draft I've ever dealt
- 8:07with. So nineteen eighty six is the first year I do any evaluations.
- 8:13So there you go. It's it's ramped up to a level I haven't seen
- 8:18before. Oh well, there's a ton of business going on down there.
- 8:24The new unions. Yeah, yeah, the new unis are coming out and
- 8:28they're coming after the draft. They they they're pretty They're way down the road
- 8:33on this. They've sent Penner and all of the team officials have been the
- 8:41Nike out in Oregon. They've done all that. They had the mock ups
- 8:46in at the Broncos an early, early, early round. There was some
- 8:50concern in house by the Broncos that they hadn't changed them enough. So they
- 8:56have gone back and forth on this for quite a while, and they will
- 8:58be veiled in whatever fashion they're gonna do. They can't like, there's some
- 9:05things they can't do. But I've been told it will be very quickly after
- 9:09the draft. People will see these And at one point the old d was
- 9:16back involved. But there again, there's been a lot of back and forth
- 9:20between Nike, the league, and the Broncos on this. Hold on.
- 9:24You said, how different are they? Do you have any idea? You
- 9:26seem to have got some intel. I saw an early mock up a while
- 9:33back and but that one was long gone in terms of if it's really going
- 9:39to be there or not. It was. There was not a lot of
- 9:41change in that one, and I think the Broncos wanted that to find that
- 9:46sweet spot between changing the uniforms and not like this extreme makeover that would make
- 9:52people's heads explode. So I think they're trying to find the sweet spot there,
- 9:58and they've done a ton of focus group stuff. So there there are
- 10:01a lot of citizen Broncos fans out there who have seen some kind of uh,
- 10:09you know, uniform saying because they've been part of a focus group uh
- 10:13or two. But yeah, there, it's pretty well done. It's just
- 10:16a matter of when they want to show it to the world. So uh,
- 10:20but they they did. They loaded up the plane and went to Oregon
- 10:24and did all of that a while back. So this is this is way
- 10:30down the road. George Peyton's saying today, Leggy, that the Broncos were
- 10:33involved in the free agent quarterback market, that they continue to be involved,
- 10:39and that they will add a veteran quarterback. Who is he talking about,
- 10:45right? You know, I'm not sure they could specifically be pinned down this
- 10:52point. I mean, we all know the names. I mean that the
- 10:54field is the field right now, and it's not field, it's yeah,
- 11:00no, I mean, but you know what I'm saying. We've all seen
- 11:01the names a million times. Who's left and what they can do? Yeah,
- 11:07I mean, I think some of it really is based on they want
- 11:13to see in a perfect world, they'd like to see how they draft unfolds.
- 11:18Who do they get and what's the timetable on that player? If they
- 11:24get anybody. I mean, they're not guaranteed, you know, with No.
- 11:28Two. If nothing happens in the first round quarterback wise, okay,
- 11:33that changes the dynamic plenty, because now you're down the board and maybe your
- 11:39time frame, you know, is different for the guy. It doesn't mean
- 11:43you like the guy any less, it just means your expectation and your time
- 11:48frame for his readiness might be different. So I do think they want to
- 11:52see how they think all this is going to unfold before they commit X number,
- 11:58because they don't have enough cap space to just sort of do whatever they
- 12:05want with a veteran backup right now. It's got to fit, you know.
- 12:09So I don't think they want to spend any extra dollars that they they
- 12:13would have to without knowing what the other part of the equation looks like.
- 12:20All right, well, we got plenty of time to speculate on that because
- 12:22I had a follow up. But we'll just figure it out. Maybe they
- 12:24got a magical hidden quarterback. Maybe Uncle Rico's coming out of retirement before we
- 12:28gets out of here. The way he phrased it, you know, guys,
- 12:33who's better in the league? Makes me think you know? Or are
- 12:35you trying to get somewhere to come back? Last name who's available? Their
- 12:37best name we could come up with is Philip Rivers. I don't know who
- 12:39else you're talking to. Matt Ryan, you're gonna get him out of the
- 12:43broadcast booth. To me, what are you thinking about? Bring back Drew
- 12:45Brees? Drew Brees's that guy? Real quick though, We got to get
- 12:48your comment the hip drop tackle. A lot of the players said they didn't
- 12:50want it out of the game, but it's out of the game. I
- 12:54was watching videos on all the major channels, including yours today, trying to
- 12:58figure out what they're worried about. Will this be ruled? Will this not
- 13:01be ruled? They said something like only allegedly the only one that will be
- 13:07the only technique that will be flagged. Was only used like what was the
- 13:11number do you know? Leg? Like two hundred sometimes so barely once a
- 13:13game. But do we worry this goes into a pass interfearance area where they
- 13:20get loose with the interpretation and not necessarily of the dropping of the weight on
- 13:24a guy's backside of a guy's leg. Yeah, I think you know,
- 13:28the way it reads is that you've actually got a land on the lower leg.
- 13:35I think ultimately they discovered there were like fifteen or sixteen injuries from the
- 13:41play, And the way I saw it written was that you actually have to
- 13:46land on the lower leg while you're doing it. And there's an awful lot
- 13:52of people that just think it's it won't be flagged. It'll be something you
- 13:56get fined for on Tuesday. You know. It's like, oh, yeah,
- 14:01you had a hip drop tackle in the game. Here's you're fine and
- 14:05all of that. You know, like the like the helmet to helmet.
- 14:09A lot of the helmet to helmet players are fine that that weren't flagged in
- 14:13games. I just don't, you know, I know some officials and I
- 14:16know some former officials. I don't know how that is going to be officiated
- 14:20in real time in a game unless it's just so painfully operate. Everyone's using
- 14:26the one on Mark Andrews as the example. But yeah, that's like the
- 14:31most clear one you can find. That one's easy two official, you know
- 14:37what to officiate? What's what about the one off to the side a little
- 14:39bit or a tough angle. I just don't know how we You know,
- 14:45we're always riding the officials that they skink and they don't do that. You
- 14:48know that it's bad, it's awful officiated. It's never been worse. Well,
- 14:52it's because they've made the game almost impossible to officiate. And I think
- 14:58it's all timately, if the goal is to take every injury out of football,
- 15:03you're not going to be able to do it. It's just it's almost
- 15:07like we don't want to accept that for our entertainment, these guys put an
- 15:13awful lot at risk, and like we're uncomfortable with that idea, so we're
- 15:18just going to keep adding rules that we think will make us feel better about
- 15:24the level of injuries and all of that. I just don't know that this
- 15:28was some rampant problem. I do see the grievous ones, but I gues
- 15:33it's gonna be awfully hard to officiate. I think a lot of guys are
- 15:35going to get fined for plays that weren't flagged in games. Guys. Read
- 15:39Jeff Legwoaldsbroncos coverage at espn dot com, watch him on ESPN, listen to
- 15:43him here on Altitude Sports Radio ninety two five because dude knows what's up.
- 15:48Plus check his latest college basketball stuff as he was in Memphis covering one of
- 15:52the best games of the tournament there last night. Leggy, beautiful work,
- 15:54buddy, Thank you Nis. No, we'll see
