- 0:04Speaker 2: Yeah, we're talking.
- 0:05Speaker 1: By the way, speaking of hockey women's hockey. Yeah, by
- 0:09Speaker 1: win last night. They're hosting the Hockey East Championship game
- 0:13Speaker 1: against their arch nemesis, Northeastern Saturday.
- 0:16Speaker 2: I believe it's what three.
- 0:17Speaker 1: Three thirty something three thirty at Toscano, So if you
- 0:20Speaker 1: have never been there, it's a great chance to go
- 0:22Speaker 1: watch hockey. And by the way, both teams are really good,
- 0:25Speaker 1: and I think regardless of what happens, they're going to
- 0:28Speaker 1: the NCAA is right both, Yeah, they're both in fantastic
- 0:32Speaker 1: You and I, Mike, we're talking about with Tage being
- 0:35Speaker 1: an Olympian, you're gonna have a hockey player's name on
- 0:38Speaker 1: a statue somewhere on campus that Andy Bissett, who worked
- 0:42Speaker 1: for Travelers, was a Yukona Lump was an Olympic Olympian
- 0:45Speaker 1: shot put I think track and field. There's a statue
- 0:48Speaker 1: where and I'm sure many of his former players around this.
- 0:52Speaker 2: Where is this? Do we know where this?
- 0:54Speaker 3: Yeah? Is located right across from the Union by the
- 0:58Speaker 3: UH Dog is about Yeah, exactly right by where the
- 1:01Speaker 3: ticket office is.
- 1:03Speaker 4: Oh so it's down a little bit down. Yeah, right there. Yeah,
- 1:06Speaker 4: you've never seen it.
- 1:08Speaker 2: No, you're on it. I'll go over there tomorrow.
- 1:12Speaker 3: Okay, I'll go.
- 1:15Speaker 2: I'll go take our picture.
- 1:16Speaker 1: Oh no, I'm just curious because you talk about it
- 1:18Speaker 1: all the time. It's like, where is this thing? Yeah,
- 1:21Speaker 1: that's the side of gaff lighte ever going?
- 1:23Speaker 3: Yeah, it's right on. It's a closed off road.
- 1:27Speaker 2: What is it?
- 1:28Speaker 3: You've been here a lot longer than side hill side.
- 1:30Speaker 4: Whatever it is, it'll be r E M A waste?
- 1:37Speaker 2: Do you what's it called? D row statues there?
- 1:39Speaker 3: But he's inside right or is he out?
- 1:42Speaker 2: Now? De Row statues outside? Is it? It's not inside?
- 1:45Speaker 2: Is it? It's inside?
- 1:48Speaker 4: I thought it was like kind of like in as.
- 1:53Speaker 2: Is Jack Hays. By the way, that's works at Yukon.
- 1:56Speaker 4: Oh okay, I got you. Yeah, I know. I back
- 2:03Speaker 4: when I started, the campus was really small. I could
- 2:05Speaker 4: go wherever I wanted in a short period of time.
- 2:08Speaker 2: By the way, did you guys walk now?
- 2:09Speaker 1: Now?
- 2:09Speaker 4: I need a golf cart to go from my office
- 2:11Speaker 4: to the Roe statue?
- 2:12Speaker 2: There you go.
- 2:13Speaker 3: That's a lot of birthdays.
- 2:14Speaker 1: Did you guys watch practice today and hear the pings
- 2:17Speaker 1: of bats off ball bats.
- 2:19Speaker 3: And today I actually went out and watched half an inning.
- 2:22Speaker 1: Okay, yeah, baseball.
- 2:25Speaker 2: Home opener.
- 2:26Speaker 1: My former neighbor Evan Menzel hit hit for the cycle today.
- 2:29Speaker 1: Evan Menzel, who started at Maine and now was at Yukon,
- 2:32Speaker 1: lived three houses down for me as a younger kid
- 2:35Speaker 1: before they moved, but him and his brother always out
- 2:37Speaker 1: playing catch.
- 2:37Speaker 2: They won today, they won, right, you know.
- 2:40Speaker 4: That's that's that's like one of the great things that's
- 2:42Speaker 4: happened there too, is they get a new field for
- 2:44Speaker 4: baseball where they can just go and play no matter
- 2:47Speaker 4: what the weather is.
- 2:48Speaker 1: Yeah, Jamie and the crew did a great job getting
- 2:50Speaker 1: the field ready.
- 2:51Speaker 4: Yeah, where before they got this like artificial stuff. Now
- 2:55Speaker 4: looks like dirt, but it's like field turf, but it's
- 2:57Speaker 4: field turf. Yeah, so it you could just snow blow it.
- 3:02Speaker 4: So if there's snow on it, they did, you just
- 3:04Speaker 4: go and you snow blow it and then you could play,
- 3:07Speaker 4: whereas before you couldn't play a whole game until June
- 3:10Speaker 4: because of the mud and the dirt. And you know,
- 3:13Speaker 4: anybody who plays baseball in Connecticut, you got to love
- 3:16Speaker 4: the game because you're playing in something other than baseball weather.
- 3:19Speaker 2: Most of the time.
- 3:20Speaker 3: The only thing worse is being a parent of a
- 3:22Speaker 3: baseball player.
- 3:24Speaker 2: We've been there, Yeah, we've been there. We've been there.
- 3:26Speaker 2: Yea been there. Yeah. What did Mike play? What position
- 3:29Speaker 2: it might play? Did you play in high school? Oh?
- 3:31Speaker 1: I had him for a Twilight League game once. I
- 3:33Speaker 1: had no idea because he had his full beard. It's like,
- 3:35Speaker 1: who the heck is the saying hi to me my son, yes,
- 3:37Speaker 1: and then come to find out it was your ring
- 3:39Speaker 1: them up. I think I know, Yeah, maybe I didn't.
- 3:43Speaker 1: I think I think he was swinging miss strike.
- 3:44Speaker 2: Three, swinging a miss strike three. But no, no, I
- 3:48Speaker 2: don't remember. No, No, he was.
- 3:51Speaker 4: Yeah, he was a hell of a picture he matter
- 3:54Speaker 4: of fact, Jimmy Pender's dad, sure, he pissed at Mike
- 3:57Speaker 4: that he played basketball instead of baseball. And I think
- 4:00Speaker 4: he would have been a better baseball player than a
- 4:01Speaker 4: basketball player. And he was All state basketball player. But
- 4:05Speaker 4: you know, when you're when you're big for your age
- 4:07Speaker 4: and you can throw really hard and you know how
- 4:10Speaker 4: to pitch, you know, those those guys are hard to
- 4:12Speaker 4: come by.
- 4:13Speaker 2: Yeah, you know.
- 4:14Speaker 4: Yeah, six foot six foot one, six foot two, white
- 4:17Speaker 4: guys to play basketball.
- 4:20Speaker 2: They do.
- 4:21Speaker 4: They don't have a long shelf life.
- 4:25Speaker 2: No, they get rotten pretty quick.
- 4:27Speaker 3: All right.
- 4:27Speaker 1: This might be a tough question to ask both of you,
- 4:30Speaker 1: but someone that you recruited that you didn't you know,
- 4:33Speaker 1: you brought them in, but you weren't sure what you
- 4:36Speaker 1: were going to get out of that particular person that
- 4:39Speaker 1: just totally took off and blossomed into something really special
- 4:43Speaker 1: for whether you're at BC or here at Yukon, Mike,
- 4:46Speaker 1: and for you, Geno, is there one or two players
- 4:49Speaker 1: that stand out for both of you that really took
- 4:52Speaker 1: off that you didn't really expect to to the level
- 4:55Speaker 1: that they went.
- 4:55Speaker 3: Certainly here at Yukon. It was Mark Gatcombe. He was
- 5:00Speaker 3: a kid that you know, I always find the kid
- 5:04Speaker 3: some of the best recruits I ever got. I was
- 5:06Speaker 3: going down to watch someone else and someone else jumped
- 5:09Speaker 3: off the ice at me, and I was going down.
- 5:12Speaker 3: I remember I was. It was a Salisbury I drove
- 5:14Speaker 3: out to Salisbury, which is about like an hour and
- 5:17Speaker 3: forty five minutes from here, even though it's probably forty
- 5:19Speaker 3: five miles total, but it takes forever to get there.
- 5:24Speaker 3: And they were playing the Gunnery School at the time
- 5:27Speaker 3: and whatever it is now Frederick Gunno, I don't know
- 5:30Speaker 3: what they call it now. But they were playing the
- 5:33Speaker 3: Gunnery School and I went out to watch a couple
- 5:35Speaker 3: of kids on Salisbury and this kid kept jumping off
- 5:38Speaker 3: the ice at me from Gunnery And it turned out
- 5:41Speaker 3: his dad was a Boston cop, and we kind of
- 5:43Speaker 3: hit it off, and I started talking to him, and
- 5:46Speaker 3: we offered him a partial scholarship to come to Yukon,
- 5:50Speaker 3: and his freshman year he was fine, and he just
- 5:52Speaker 3: kept getting better and better and better. Eventually, you know,
- 5:57Speaker 3: we upgraded him to a full scholarship and now he's
- 6:00Speaker 3: a full timer with the New York Islanders. There's a
- 6:03Speaker 3: kid that just really kept going and competing, and you know,
- 6:09Speaker 3: I never ever expected that from him. And in some
- 6:13Speaker 3: ways I knew I thought Tage Thompson would play in
- 6:16Speaker 3: the NHL. I never thought he'd be a fifty goal
- 6:19Speaker 3: scorer or on the US Olympic team. To be on
- 6:22Speaker 3: the US Olympic team, you got to be one of
- 6:23Speaker 3: the best fifty players in the world. That's how good
- 6:27Speaker 3: you are. And I just, you know, i'd be lying
- 6:30Speaker 3: if I said when I saw him as an eighteen
- 6:32Speaker 3: year old that I thought he'd be that all.
- 6:34Speaker 1: Right, I'm gonna wait on Geno's answer for a minute
- 6:35Speaker 1: because we're a little behind the skit, behind the eight
- 6:37Speaker 1: ball here time wise, so we're going to take a break.
- 6:39Speaker 1: We'll get Gino's answer when we come back in a minute.
- 6:41Speaker 1: It's the Yukon Women's Basketball Coaches show Gino and Cavire
- 6:44Speaker 1: from Cafe or on Learfield
