- 0:02Speaker 1: From everybody to this Monday edition of Nobody's Here on
- 0:06Speaker 1: Foul Territory.
- 0:08Speaker 2: Except me.
- 0:08Speaker 1: You guys came to watch me, but you don't have
- 0:10Speaker 1: to just watch me. You can go to FoulTerritoryShop.com and
- 0:15Speaker 1: get yourself maybe one of the hottest hitters in the
- 0:17Speaker 1: postseason merch along with tons of other player-licensed gear. All
- 0:23Speaker 1: the gear you see us wearing all the time. I mean,
- 0:25Speaker 1: you got to hit subscribe too. Don't be afraid to
- 0:28Speaker 1: hit subscribe because you're watching us now We need to
- 0:32Speaker 1: keep watching, all right, because the games are only going
- 0:35Speaker 1: to get hotter and more heavy in the next, I
- 0:39Speaker 1: would say, week and a half. The post-game show today,
- 0:42Speaker 1: is it going to be a clinch? Are we going
- 0:44Speaker 1: to have popping bottles for the post-game show? But it's
- 0:48Speaker 1: going to be me, AJ, Todd, after the Rays and
- 0:51Speaker 1: the Guardians clash a bullpen game with a Freddie P.
- 0:57Speaker 1: Pretty decent trade for the Rays, if I would say
- 0:59Speaker 1: so myself, in the trop. Be tuned in post-game, probably
- 1:05Speaker 1: maybe like five minutes after the game. Watch the game,
- 1:08Speaker 1: flip over and see us. But before we get to
- 1:12Speaker 1: the start of the show, we got to talk about
- 1:15Speaker 1: what Sarah Langs tweeted. Sarah Langs tweeted that the team
- 1:19Speaker 1: to score first in this postseason is 22-12. So you're
- 1:25Speaker 1: saying you got to get ahead in these games. The
- 1:28Speaker 1: team to out-homer the other team is 21-4. even though
- 1:32Speaker 1: the Rays have averaged like. 4 home runs per game
- 1:36Speaker 1: in this series. And Sarah Langs also told us that
- 1:41Speaker 1: 37.5 of the runs scored have been on the home run.
- 1:45Speaker 2: Well, you know what, Sarah? We have no idea how
- 1:48Speaker 2: they're going to.
- 1:48Speaker 1: Win this game, but I guess what you're telling us
- 1:50Speaker 1: is we have to hit some homers if you want
- 1:53Speaker 1: to figure out who's going to win between the Guardians
- 1:55Speaker 1: and Rays.
- 1:55Speaker 2: Tonight at 8 o'clock. But now we're going to charge
- 2:00Speaker 2: them out with full count.
- 2:03Speaker 3: It's a full count.
- 2:09Speaker 1: It's time for full count fueled by Marathon. And if
- 2:13Speaker 1: you didn't watch the 5 o'clock game last night, I
- 2:15Speaker 1: don't know where you were because the game between the
- 2:18Speaker 1: Rays and the Guardians last night, obviously the Rays won 3-1,
- 2:23Speaker 1: another non-offensive game, but it could have been worse. So
- 2:28Speaker 1: far in this series, what I've seen is that when
- 2:31Speaker 1: the Rays... are winning these games, the Guardians' defense has
- 2:35Speaker 1: kind of let them down, and they let them into
- 2:37Speaker 1: this game. The series could be different. The Guardians' defense
- 2:40Speaker 1: last night, in a losing effort, absolutely shut down the Rays' offense.
- 2:47Speaker 1: This could have been worse than 3-1, which doesn't bode
- 2:49Speaker 1: well for the Guardians going into tonight. The Guardians now have,
- 2:55Speaker 1: you know, their pitching... not lined up because of last night.
- 3:00Speaker 1: Parker Messick, I think, gave up five hits. He lasted
- 3:04Speaker 1: two innings. And it was one of those games where
- 3:10Speaker 1: you watch and you go, you're down three to nothing.
- 3:12Speaker 2: You're down two to nothing. Not saying that you punt
- 3:15Speaker 2: on this game.
- 3:16Speaker 1: I'm not saying that you give up and you don't
- 3:20Speaker 1: try to come back. But somebody else has to step up.
- 3:22Speaker 1: If you don't think Parker Messick is going to be
- 3:25Speaker 1: the guy the rest of the way and you pull
- 3:26Speaker 1: him out, I had a hard time with Steven Vogt
- 3:31Speaker 1: using all the high leverage arms that he used knowing
- 3:36Speaker 1: it wasn't an elimination game. Knowing it wasn't the last
- 3:42Speaker 1: game that they were going to be playing.
- 3:44Speaker 2: I get it.
- 3:45Speaker 1: They don't have starting pitching for tonight. But one of
- 3:49Speaker 1: these two games... Last night or tonight, I felt like
- 3:52Speaker 1: the Guardians needed to cobble together somebody that was going
- 3:56Speaker 1: to give them innings and it not be Heron, it
- 4:00Speaker 1: not be Armstrong, it not be Cade Smith, Hunter Gattis.
- 4:06Speaker 1: I know I'm leaving some other high leverage arms out
- 4:08Speaker 1: that have been taxed. And no way do you punt
- 4:12Speaker 1: a game when you're only down 2-0, 3-0. But at
- 4:16Speaker 1: some point, I would have liked to have seen Tanner
- 4:18Speaker 1: Bybee last night. But I'm going to get to the
- 4:22Speaker 1: Rays now with what they did in this game, winning
- 4:27Speaker 1: three to one behind probably top three Cy Young, maybe
- 4:33Speaker 1: top five Cy Young in Rasmussen, giving them just ridiculous, ridiculous,
- 4:41Speaker 1: not just innings, but consistent innings. In the playoffs, everybody's
- 4:45Speaker 1: on edge and they're so fearful of what's going to happen,
- 4:48Speaker 1: what Oh, maybe I got to take him out. And
- 4:50Speaker 1: I feel like Kevin Cash has taken a backseat to that.
- 4:54Speaker 1: He said, you know what? Drew Rasmussen has... Rasmussen, I'm sorry.
- 5:00Speaker 1: I always say Rasmussen because I got traded with a
- 5:02Speaker 1: guy named Rasmussen. He is out there giving them quality innings,
- 5:09Speaker 1: but dominant innings. Dominant innings that's allowing his manager to say,
- 5:13Speaker 1: you know what?
- 5:15Speaker 2: I'm okay. I'm leaving... I'm leaving him in the game
- 5:18Speaker 2: to get this out. What does that do?
- 5:19Speaker 1: It not only gives him confidence, but it shows all
- 5:23Speaker 1: the other pitchers that, you know what, he's reading the
- 5:25Speaker 1: situation and not just reading the chart, not just reading
- 5:29Speaker 1: what the next number is. So for Rasmussen to be
- 5:33Speaker 1: able to do that, he is able to give them
- 5:38Speaker 1: the length that they need to be able to get
- 5:41Speaker 1: to Tyler Wells, to be able to obviously not push
- 5:45Speaker 1: Brian Baker for two innings like Steven Vogt has had
- 5:49Speaker 1: to do with their bullpen arms and the at-bats that
- 5:55Speaker 1: the Rays put together early on in this game with
- 6:00Speaker 1: DeLuca taking the walk with the bases loaded.
- 6:04Speaker 2: You went through the vaunted part of that lineup.
- 6:09Speaker 1: You went through the big three, as they call it,
- 6:13Speaker 1: and you got some traffic, but You had a chance,
- 6:16Speaker 1: so he got the walk. Then you have Chandler Simpson.
- 6:19Speaker 1: To me, this game offensively for the Rays hinged on
- 6:25Speaker 1: Chandler Simpson, and I thought it was going to hinge
- 6:29Speaker 1: on Junior Caminero, but Junior seems to be the series
- 6:35Speaker 1: really chasing out of the zone, really giving, not giving
- 6:38Speaker 1: away at bats, but not giving, not passing the baton.
- 6:42Speaker 1: Because it seems like the Guardians have done a good
- 6:44Speaker 1: job of saying Junior's not going to be the one
- 6:46Speaker 1: to beat us. But guess who is beating us? Chandler
- 6:49Speaker 1: Simpson with an infield single. With the double that almost
- 6:52Speaker 1: was a triple. And then the first pitch or second pitch,
- 6:54Speaker 1: he steals third. They put pressure on guys. And we're
- 6:59Speaker 1: able to see... It's not only pressure, but it's passing
- 7:06Speaker 1: the baton with.
- 7:08Speaker 1: Yandy getting the hit, and then Aranda getting two hits
- 7:11Speaker 1: to the left side. They're passing it to Junior, who's,
- 7:16Speaker 1: I think, trying to do a little too much, rightly so.
- 7:19Speaker 1: I think there's a pressure to the guy at the
- 7:22Speaker 1: back of the big three to be able to come
- 7:23Speaker 1: through for them. But as the lineup pushes, as the
- 7:28Speaker 1: at-bats become team at-bats, it's something that has enabled the
- 7:33Speaker 1: Rays to be up 3-2 in this series, has enabled
- 7:36Speaker 1: them to Clearly, they already had the starting pitching advantage,
- 7:41Speaker 1: but it enabled them to stick with their starting pitching advantage.
- 7:44Speaker 1: And they have a really good bullpen, but they've gotten
- 7:48Speaker 1: length and innings out of them so that when they
- 7:50Speaker 1: bring that bullpen in, Jose Ramirez hasn't seen Tyler Wells
- 7:55Speaker 1: five times in five games. I didn't necessarily like the
- 7:58Speaker 1: Tyler Wells matchup last night. It went well because he
- 8:01Speaker 1: threw two nasty changeups to Jose, but... It's something that's
- 8:06Speaker 1: enabled Jose Ramirez, who's a really smart hitter, to not
- 8:09Speaker 1: be able to see all those guys every single night.
- 8:13Speaker 1: And I think it's something that's super, super important for
- 8:18Speaker 1: this Rays team if they want to go ahead when
- 8:20Speaker 1: they beat the Brewers later on.
- 8:25Speaker 4: AJ, in this postseason, there is a chance for a
- 8:29Speaker 4: fan base to get very excited to witness either their
- 8:32Speaker 4: first ever World Series title or a World Series title
- 8:35Speaker 4: that hasn't been in a long time. So if you're
- 8:38Speaker 4: a fan out there and you're going, man, some things
- 8:41Speaker 4: never change. No, in baseball, it can turn around. But
- 8:44Speaker 4: here's what really doesn't change. Mint Mobile, $ 15 a month
- 8:49Speaker 4: on your wireless bill. It's been there since we started
- 8:52Speaker 4: talking about Mint Mobile, and it will continue.
- 8:55Speaker 5: It's still there, and like you said, Scott, it's never
- 8:57Speaker 5: going to change. The coverage is great. It's unlimited plans
- 9:01Speaker 5: for $ 15 a month. People complaining about how stuff is expensive.
- 9:04Speaker 5: Mint Mobile, still the same. $ 15, great coverage for a
- 9:08Speaker 5: great price.
- 9:09Speaker 4: Go to mintmobile.com slash territory. That's mintmobile.com slash territory for
- 9:14Speaker 4: $ 15 a month. $ 45 upfront payment required, equivalent to $ 15
- 9:18Speaker 4: a month. New customers on first three-month plan only. Taxes
- 9:22Speaker 4: and fees extra. See Mint Mobile for details. All right,
- 9:25Speaker 4: so number one, you said Rasmussen way too many times.
- 9:29Speaker 4: I can't stop. You got to get it out of
- 9:32Speaker 4: your head. It's Drew Rasmussen. Even when I say it,
- 9:36Speaker 4: and then.
- 9:37Speaker 2: I re-say it, and I say it wrong again. You
- 9:40Speaker 2: said it.
- 9:40Speaker 4: You corrected yourself, and then seconds later, you said it again. Really,
- 9:44Speaker 4: we were going to let you cook for the entire
- 9:47Speaker 4: full count segment, but we had to come in just
- 9:48Speaker 4: for that. People were getting a little bit rasmused and pissed. Anyway, thoughts.
- 9:54Speaker 4: Let's start here. ALCS. Rays took Game five, they're up 3-2.
- 9:58Speaker 4: They go back home to Tampa.
- 10:00Speaker 3: Bay.
- 10:00Speaker 4: It's Freddie P. Do you think they lock it down, AJ?
- 10:03Speaker 4: And if not, how in trouble are they with Gavin
- 10:06Speaker 4: Williams looming in Game 7?
- 10:08Speaker 5: I don't think they're in trouble at all because the
- 10:09Speaker 5: problem that the Guardians are going to have is they
- 10:11Speaker 5: use Smith every game. They use Gattis every game. They
- 10:14Speaker 5: use Heron every game. They use Zabrowski every game. They use–
- 10:18Speaker 5: I mean, last night– that Parker mess went two innings.
- 10:22Speaker 5: Like at some point I get it, Steven vote, but
- 10:24Speaker 5: you might have to lose a battle to win the war.
- 10:26Speaker 5: And by bringing in all his a relievers last night
- 10:29Speaker 5: for innings, plus he's going to have to do that
- 10:32Speaker 5: again tonight with a bullpen. I mean, Sean Armstrong's arms
- 10:34Speaker 5: going to fall off. And then game seven, you had,
- 10:36Speaker 5: that's what I'm saying.
- 10:38Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 10:39Speaker 2: But can you count on that?
- 10:40Speaker 4: Probably not.
- 10:42Speaker 5: So that's the biggest issue for me is that they're using, uh,
- 10:45Speaker 5: Their bullpen's so much, and they have to play four
- 10:48Speaker 5: games in a row.
- 10:49Speaker 3: I know.
- 10:49Speaker 2: And there's no off day.
- 10:51Speaker 4: Right. So for last night, what would you have done differently?
- 10:53Speaker 2: I would have let Messick ride a little bit.
- 10:55Speaker 4: Even if he's getting hit.
- 10:58Speaker 5: Again, you're going to have to lose the battle to
- 11:01Speaker 5: win the war sometimes. And I know it's best of
- 11:04Speaker 5: three series, but is your best chance to have Zabrowski, Smith,
- 11:09Speaker 5: Gattis throw four games in a row possibly?
- 11:11Speaker 2: I guarantee you they've never done that in their lives.
- 11:15Speaker 4: Not to mention it's against the same team every single time.
- 11:18Speaker 2: Every single time.
- 11:19Speaker 5: So, I mean, these guys are going to throw seven
- 11:21Speaker 5: times against these guys in seven games, some of them.
- 11:23Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 11:24Speaker 5: It's crazy that that's a thing to me that I
- 11:26Speaker 5: don't understand why they just let them do that. I mean,
- 11:31Speaker 5: maybe you let Messi go and he gets five innings.
- 11:33Speaker 5: I can understand if you had the day off in
- 11:35Speaker 5: between you let guys rest, but there's no day off.
- 11:39Speaker 4: Foster Griffin probably could have gone a little bit deeper
- 11:41Speaker 4: the day before.
- 11:42Speaker 2: Foster Griffin's not even starting today. They're starting Armstrong.
- 11:44Speaker 4: No, I know, but what was it, two games ago?
- 11:47Speaker 4: Didn't you guys feel like he could have gone a.
- 11:49Speaker 2: Little bit longer? Yeah.
- 11:50Speaker 4: And at the time, it's like, well, it worked. They
- 11:52Speaker 4: won the game, right? That was game, was that game
- 11:56Speaker 4: three or four?
- 11:58Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 11:58Speaker 4: When Foster Griffin pitches. A lot of the time, it's like, oh, well,
- 12:00Speaker 4: they took him out. It worked, right? The next reliever
- 12:03Speaker 4: comes in, shuts them down. Here's the problem. As the
- 12:06Speaker 4: series gets deeper.
- 12:07Speaker 2: And deeper and deeper.
- 12:08Speaker 4: You all of a sudden go, wait, are we just
- 12:09Speaker 4: going to roll out the same dudes for one.
- 12:10Speaker 2: Or two innings every day? How do you know that
- 12:11Speaker 2: Parker Messick pitched two innings?
- 12:13Speaker 4: But he had given up, what, three runs?
- 12:15Speaker 2: Two runs.
- 12:15Speaker 4: Two runs.
- 12:17Speaker 2: Five hits. Came back out for the third.
- 12:19Speaker 4: They didn't want it to get away. They wanted to
- 12:22Speaker 4: keep the game close. But they pushed chips in on
- 12:25Speaker 4: that one. In a series where you don't have an off-ditch.
- 12:26Speaker 2: They pushed chips in to win. They were already behind.
- 12:28Speaker 2: That's the problem.
- 12:29Speaker 3: Right.
- 12:29Speaker 4: And you don't have an off-ditch.
- 12:30Speaker 2: And they were facing Rasmussen, their best pitcher.
- 12:33Speaker 4: So the biggest difference for you is... let Parker Messick
- 12:36Speaker 4: keep going even though they were squaring him up. And
- 12:39Speaker 4: if the game gets out of hand, you lost one
- 12:41Speaker 4: game and now you've got your big boys for the
- 12:42Speaker 4: next two.
- 12:44Speaker 2: I mean, Foster Griffin coming out the night before was
- 12:47Speaker 2: weird to me.
- 12:48Speaker 4: That's what I'm saying.
- 12:49Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 12:49Speaker 5: I mean, Messick gave him two innings, five hits, two runs.
- 12:54Speaker 5: I mean, Heron came in and gave him– but Armstrong
- 12:56Speaker 5: threw an inning and a third last night. Zabrowski inning
- 12:59Speaker 5: and two-thirds. Gaddis inning and two-thirds. Cade Smith inning and
- 13:02Speaker 5: a third. They covered a lot of innings with their
- 13:05Speaker 5: A relievers. Now they're going to have to use Espino,
- 13:08Speaker 5: who's been fine, right? But then they're going to have to–
- 13:11Speaker 5: Tanner Bybee's going to have to get some innings at
- 13:12Speaker 5: some point. Foster Griffin obviously is going to have to give.
- 13:14Speaker 2: Him some innings.
- 13:15Speaker 5: But, I mean, let's say they do win this game,
- 13:17Speaker 5: game six, and they're going to have to probably use Zabrowski, Gattis,
- 13:21Speaker 5: and Smith again if it's somewhat close. Then they're going
- 13:24Speaker 5: to have to pitch him again.
- 13:25Speaker 2: That's a lot.
- 13:27Speaker 1: So where was Tanner Bybee last night? I had said
- 13:31Speaker 1: it before you guys came on.
- 13:32Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 13:33Speaker 2: Where was Tanner Bybee? Where was Festa? Where was guys that.
- 13:37Speaker 1: In my opinion, like Dustin May in the game where
- 13:40Speaker 1: the Brewers went down 4-0, they brought him in to
- 13:44Speaker 1: get some innings. Doesn't mean he was like, oh, I'll
- 13:47Speaker 1: just give up runs. Tanner Bybee may not be your
- 13:50Speaker 1: best option, but you need an option that's not the
- 13:55Speaker 1: jam-packed best pitchers that you're going to use the rest
- 13:58Speaker 1: of the way to win this thing.
- 14:00Speaker 2: Especially when you're losing.
- 14:02Speaker 4: But I'll present the other side, even though I disagree
- 14:04Speaker 4: with it. You're close enough. You're home. You're worried that
- 14:08Speaker 4: if you lose this one, you got to win both
- 14:11Speaker 4: in Tampa Bay, including Freddie P in the next game.
- 14:14Speaker 5: But your chances go extensively up if you have your
- 14:16Speaker 5: best guys a little bit more rested.
- 14:18Speaker 3: Right.
- 14:19Speaker 4: It's just that it does feel like you're punting if
- 14:22Speaker 4: you don't put your big boys in for that moment
- 14:24Speaker 4: when the game is still close. Even later in the game,
- 14:28Speaker 4: This was a close game throughout. It never got away
- 14:30Speaker 4: from them. 3-0 was the most that it got away,
- 14:33Speaker 4: and it was mostly a two-run game. So if you're
- 14:35Speaker 4: Steven Vogt, are you looking ahead like, hey, we've come
- 14:38Speaker 4: back many times before. Jose Ramirez late in that game
- 14:41Speaker 4: strikes out. Sometimes he hits a home run. All of
- 14:43Speaker 4: a sudden, he looks like a genius if they pull
- 14:46Speaker 4: off a win in that game, right?
- 14:48Speaker 5: Yeah, but also at some point you've got to say,
- 14:50Speaker 5: all right, well, Rasmussen's dealing. I mean, he went 6-1,
- 14:54Speaker 5: gave a 7-1 run. They weren't squaring him up very well.
- 14:57Speaker 2: No.
- 14:58Speaker 5: So we're not probably going to win this game because
- 15:02Speaker 5: we know if Rasmussen keeps doing what he's doing, then
- 15:04Speaker 5: we get, you know, Baker, Wells, Boozer, those guys in
- 15:07Speaker 5: the back end. So I don't know. That's why– but
- 15:12Speaker 5: you also have to think long term. I know that
- 15:14Speaker 5: you want to win this game so badly, but you've
- 15:15Speaker 5: got to think long term. And again, I mean, you
- 15:18Speaker 5: go back– you know, I guess– I don't know. I
- 15:21Speaker 5: guess Smith didn't pitch game four, so– But you threw Heron,
- 15:28Speaker 5: you threw Griffin, you threw Festa, you threw Cantillo. You
- 15:32Speaker 5: threw all the guys, and you lost that one. So Armstrong,
- 15:35Speaker 5: this will be Armstrong's third day in a row.
- 15:37Speaker 2: He's starting.
- 15:40Speaker 4: And then there's still going to be a game seven
- 15:41Speaker 4: if they make it there, which they don't– they.
- 15:43Speaker 2: Just got to get through game six. I mean, I guess.
- 15:46Speaker 5: But then if there's a game seven, they're going to
- 15:48Speaker 5: need those guys again. So it's going to be their
- 15:51Speaker 5: third day in a row with multiple innings, multiple outs.
- 15:53Speaker 2: Do you think– Do.
- 15:55Speaker 1: You think they looked at it honestly? Do you think
- 15:57Speaker 1: Voter looked at it honestly with Rasmussen on the mound
- 16:01Speaker 1: and the fact that the Guardians, I think, have scored
- 16:04Speaker 1: 11 or 12 games? I mean, 11 or 12 runs
- 16:07Speaker 1: total in the postseason at home. Do you think they
- 16:09Speaker 1: looked at it honestly? Because, you know, AJ, you played
- 16:13Speaker 1: in Cleveland so many times. There are some nights, there
- 16:17Speaker 1: are some times of year where the ball just does
- 16:20Speaker 1: not travel. Look at Caminero's home run slash fly out.
- 16:25Speaker 1: It has never been, on that launch angle, that exit
- 16:29Speaker 1: velocity has never been an out. And so, like, for me,
- 16:33Speaker 1: that's one play. It shows you're just not going to
- 16:37Speaker 1: score a ton of runs. You're not scoring at all
- 16:39Speaker 1: at home in the postseason. You're facing Rasmussen. I'm just
- 16:43Speaker 1: saying his name so I say it right. Who's going
- 16:48Speaker 1: to give you fits. You're only two innings in, but
- 16:50Speaker 1: he's going to give you fits. Four innings in, you
- 16:52Speaker 1: shouldn't keep going to... the high leverage guys.
- 16:58Speaker 2: I agree. I don't know.
- 17:00Speaker 5: Once you, you got to have trust in somebody other
- 17:03Speaker 5: than those three or four guys at the back end. And,
- 17:05Speaker 5: and Tanner Bybee was the guy who started for you
- 17:07Speaker 5: opening day. And he's the guy you're counting, you know,
- 17:09Speaker 5: you're counting on. You got to use somebody other than
- 17:13Speaker 5: your A guys. And if they can't do it, that's
- 17:15Speaker 5: what Murph did. Dustin May, Jojo Romero, those guys gave
- 17:18Speaker 5: him innings in game four.
- 17:20Speaker 2: Gave him a chance. You know, every once in a
- 17:21Speaker 2: while these guys will step up and do something you're
- 17:23Speaker 2: not counting on. And, man, you might come back and
- 17:25Speaker 2: win the game. But, again, you've got to save some
- 17:28Speaker 2: bullets at some point.
- 17:29Speaker 4: Hey, starting pitching is often the difference. And that's what
- 17:32Speaker 4: it was yesterday.
- 17:33Speaker 5: Well, Parker Messick was really good. He's going to almost
- 17:35Speaker 5: win rookie. He's not going to win it.
- 17:36Speaker 4: No, but Rasmussen was much better.
- 17:38Speaker 2: Rasmussen's really good. He's going to finish top five Cy Young.
- 17:41Speaker 3: Yes.
- 17:42Speaker 4: And then they have Freddie P for game six, which
- 17:43Speaker 4: we're going to talk more about this. We're going to
- 17:45Speaker 4: keep the conversation going on ALCS, which is obviously the
- 17:47Speaker 4: only one running right now. Curtis Granderson is about to
- 17:50Speaker 4: join us, so stay tuned for that. That'll cap full
- 17:52Speaker 4: count for now. It's fueled by Marathon, where fun runs
- 17:55Speaker 4: on full. Save up to $ 1 a gallon with Marathon rewards.
- 17:59Speaker 4: One more thang before we get ready for Grandy Man.
- 18:03Speaker 4: The Razor One went away, and there are some fantastic
- 18:06Speaker 4: new designs up on FoulTerritoryShop.com. There's individual player stuff like Aranda, Yandy,
- 18:12Speaker 4: Drew Rasmussen, and then a fun little Ray who's having
- 18:15Speaker 4: a good time on a shirt.
- 18:16Speaker 3: Go check it out.
- 18:17Speaker 4: All right, did you guys see this tweet from Tommy
- 18:19Speaker 4: Pham over the weekend? He said, I would like less
- 18:21Speaker 4: off days in the postseason. Teams technically only need like nine,
- 18:24Speaker 4: ten pitchers max because of all the off days and
- 18:26Speaker 4: less days would force teams to utilize their whole staff
- 18:28Speaker 4: completely different. I've been saying this for years.
- 18:30Speaker 3: By the way.
- 18:31Speaker 4: I agree. I love that.
- 18:32Speaker 2: Travel days.
- 18:33Speaker 4: That's the problem.
- 18:34Speaker 2: You need travel days. You need days built in for
- 18:36Speaker 2: rain like we had.
- 18:36Speaker 3: We just had it.
- 18:37Speaker 2: Cleveland. What would you do? You back everything up and
- 18:40Speaker 2: that just causes travel nightmares. It's not going to happen.
- 18:43Speaker 4: And it messes up how.
- 18:44Speaker 2: Now in the shorter series, I actually like. The shorter series,
- 18:49Speaker 2: where it's three, where you do the three.
- 18:52Speaker 4: The three-game series?
- 18:53Speaker 5: The wild card series. I like that because you get
- 18:55Speaker 5: three games, boom. You have to go three days in
- 18:57Speaker 5: a row. There's no off days. That one is more
- 19:00Speaker 5: of a test, the wild card. Once you get in
- 19:02Speaker 5: the division series, you go two, off day two, off
- 19:06Speaker 5: day one, like The teams with three or four great
- 19:10Speaker 5: bullpen guys, they can pitch every game in those series.
- 19:12Speaker 4: To me, the division series is where you can get
- 19:15Speaker 4: the upsets because you could have a shortened bullpen. You
- 19:20Speaker 4: don't need the long starting rotation.
- 19:21Speaker 5: When you get into these longer series like we're now,
- 19:24Speaker 5: especially with four games in a row, is where it's
- 19:26Speaker 5: a true test of who's the better team. If you
- 19:29Speaker 5: can do seven games in a row, that's how you
- 19:31Speaker 5: really find out who the better team is. But it
- 19:32Speaker 5: can't happen because of travel days and rain.
- 19:34Speaker 3: Right.
- 19:34Speaker 4: That's why you're seeing, I mean, a raise rotation that's
- 19:36Speaker 4: a little bit better set up than Cleveland right now.
- 19:39Speaker 5: Well, Cleveland had their guy, their dudes, though. They had
- 19:41Speaker 5: Messick ready. It was really good. They had Gavin Williams.
- 19:45Speaker 5: I mean, they had Foster Griffin. People forget Foster Griffin's
- 19:48Speaker 5: an all-star. They're treating him like he's.
- 19:50Speaker 3: Terrible.
- 19:50Speaker 2: He was pretty good this year.
- 19:51Speaker 4: Well, Cleveland's not giving him full starts to ride that.
- 19:54Speaker 2: That's what I'm saying. That's the difference. I know. Yeah.
- 19:58Speaker 4: The Rays are treating this like very traditionally, actually.
- 20:02Speaker 5: The Rays and Brewers are more traditional than most teams.
- 20:05Speaker 2: Yeah. Who the thunk? And everyone looks at them as
- 20:07Speaker 2: like the outliers.
- 20:08Speaker 4: I was talking to my dad because he's been watching
- 20:10Speaker 4: them all, and I'm with him down here right now.
- 20:12Speaker 4: He's visiting. He's just like, aren't the Rays just baseball
- 20:15Speaker 4: in the 70s, 80s, 90s? He's like the baseball that
- 20:19Speaker 4: I love watching. I was like, yeah, pretty much.
- 20:21Speaker 2: The Brewers are too.
- 20:22Speaker 4: Yeah. The Brewers have– The Guardians of.
- 20:25Speaker 2: The regular season are that, but not in the postseason.
- 20:28Speaker 4: Right, but the Brewers is– they struck out a lot
- 20:31Speaker 4: and they're even during the regular season and they take
- 20:33Speaker 4: pitches and walks and all that. Okay. The Rays are
- 20:36Speaker 4: literally contact, stolen bases, defense, starting rotation, let the starting
- 20:40Speaker 4: rotation eat. That is old school baseball. And TV crowd
- 20:45Speaker 4: is back. We're ready to welcome in our first guest
- 20:48Speaker 4: of the day, Curtis Granderson joining us. Curtis, great to
- 20:51Speaker 4: see you. Thank you for the time. And you can
- 20:52Speaker 4: also catch him on all of Turner's coverage of the postseason.
- 20:55Speaker 4: They've been doing an awesome job, both the studio and
- 20:57Speaker 4: the broadcast team. Grandy, we're enjoying it. What are you
- 21:00Speaker 4: thinking here heading into game six? I don't know if
- 21:02Speaker 4: you caught anything from our last conversation, but how could
- 21:06Speaker 4: this have been done differently for Cleveland in game five
- 21:09Speaker 4: in your mind? It's interesting.
- 21:12Speaker 3: And one, thanks for having me on. It's been a
- 21:14Speaker 3: great series up to this point. Hopefully it continues. We'll
- 21:17Speaker 3: see if it finishes tonight or if it goes to
- 21:19Speaker 3: game seven. But I'd say if anything, you think you
- 21:22Speaker 3: got to give credit where credit's due. I think Tampa
- 21:23Speaker 3: pitched amazing these last two sets of games. And they
- 21:27Speaker 3: weren't blowouts. Cleveland had opportunities, but whenever there was any
- 21:31Speaker 3: sort of threat, Tampa was able to neutralize it. And
- 21:36Speaker 3: when the big gun, Jose Ramirez, is able to be
- 21:40Speaker 3: kept in check, that kind of seems to be the
- 21:43Speaker 3: catalyst or lack thereof for the Guardians lineup. And you
- 21:47Speaker 3: hope you get a couple other names to step up
- 21:49Speaker 3: big in those situations. But even when you do get pressure...
- 21:52Speaker 3: You've got to find ways to get some runners across
- 21:54Speaker 3: the board. So I think this was more of a
- 21:56Speaker 3: Rays-dominant pitching performance versus what the Guardians could have done
- 22:01Speaker 3: differently yesterday.
- 22:04Speaker 5: Grandy, I just questioned Stephen Vogt using his A pitchers again, right?
- 22:09Speaker 5: You played in long series. You played in a lot
- 22:11Speaker 5: of playoff series. And you know there's times where you're like, okay,
- 22:14Speaker 5: Rasmussen's dealing. There's a chance we're already down 3-0. We
- 22:18Speaker 5: might have to bring in a Tanner Bybee, you know,
- 22:21Speaker 5: or let Messick go a little bit longer and then
- 22:23Speaker 5: save those guys? Because now those guys are more than
- 22:25Speaker 5: likely Kate Smith, Zabrowski, Hunter Gattis are probably going to
- 22:29Speaker 5: have to go three days in a row against the
- 22:30Speaker 5: same team, seeing them fourth, fifth time for some of
- 22:34Speaker 5: these guys in a series. Did Pedro, you, Jimmy, anyone
- 22:38Speaker 5: think like, man, maybe he should have stayed with Messick
- 22:41Speaker 5: or brought in one of their longer guys? Kind of
- 22:43Speaker 5: like what Pat Murphy did with Dustin May against L.A.
- 22:46Speaker 5: and said, all right, well, Dustin May, you're going to
- 22:47Speaker 5: have to do something. He gives them two scoreless games.
- 22:50Speaker 5: They come back and win the game.
- 22:52Speaker 3: Yeah, Pedro talked about it. He thought that Messick could
- 22:54Speaker 3: have gone a little bit longer because, again, the score
- 22:56Speaker 3: at that point was only, I think, 2-0 when they
- 22:58Speaker 3: took him out. But before you all brought me on,
- 23:01Speaker 3: you were talking the old-school baseball. And one of the
- 23:03Speaker 3: things I mentioned beforehand, if you can get the pitch
- 23:06Speaker 3: count up, then one of these teams is going to
- 23:07Speaker 3: get in trouble and they're going to have to go
- 23:09Speaker 3: to the bullpen. And sure enough, when Messick came out,
- 23:11Speaker 3: I think he was at 40, if not 50, pitches already.
- 23:15Speaker 3: And that's where, okay, all of a sudden, instead of
- 23:18Speaker 3: us saying we're going to go length– I think they
- 23:21Speaker 3: had to make a decision, but who do they go to?
- 23:23Speaker 3: I think could be the question mark there. You do have,
- 23:26Speaker 3: you know, baby over there that has the ability to
- 23:29Speaker 3: give you length if needed. He's going on today. Now
- 23:32Speaker 3: will be 10 days rest. So I think there, there's
- 23:34Speaker 3: something to consider with who to use in those situations
- 23:38Speaker 3: and how long to run them out there. And that
- 23:41Speaker 3: tweet that you posted up there of Tommy fam, I've
- 23:43Speaker 3: been saying the same thing. I love the, if you
- 23:47Speaker 3: get to the postseason, obviously this is the best time
- 23:49Speaker 3: of the year. This is where you want to be.
- 23:51Speaker 3: But the way it's currently set up and structured, you're
- 23:55Speaker 3: not always rewarding the best team. You might be rewarding
- 23:59Speaker 3: the best team with a few of the best pitchers
- 24:02Speaker 3: because they have so much rest and are able to
- 24:04Speaker 3: go out there and be used in Game 1 and
- 24:07Speaker 3: Game 4 and Game 7. If you were able to
- 24:10Speaker 3: go back-to-back situations like we're seeing happen now in this
- 24:13Speaker 3: potential four-game stretch, You see where the length is. You
- 24:17Speaker 3: see where teams are short. You see where teams get stretched.
- 24:20Speaker 3: And we do it for 162. And I know there
- 24:22Speaker 3: was conversation about the travel. You know, one of the
- 24:25Speaker 3: proposals I had talked about, and again, this is me
- 24:27Speaker 3: wearing my imaginary commissioner slash scheduling hat is, hey, if
- 24:32Speaker 3: you're in the same time zone, you treat it like
- 24:35Speaker 3: a normal travel day. Those teams traveled late last night.
- 24:39Speaker 3: They're going to get in today just like the normal season.
- 24:41Speaker 3: They're both going to play. They're both going to be tired.
- 24:43Speaker 3: If one team happened to be going from the east
- 24:45Speaker 3: to the west or vice versa, the west to the east,
- 24:47Speaker 3: then you bake in your off day there. Now, I
- 24:49Speaker 3: know you got to move the camera trucks. You got
- 24:51Speaker 3: to get all the cable and all the situations squared
- 24:54Speaker 3: into it. But if for some reason we had cameras
- 24:57Speaker 3: on site in all the different places and there wasn't
- 24:59Speaker 3: any issues with the TV stuff, you would get the
- 25:02Speaker 3: true test to see which team does have the most
- 25:04Speaker 3: length and which one has really said, okay, our 23rd,
- 25:06Speaker 3: our 24th, our 25th, our 26th player is is going
- 25:12Speaker 3: to be the key of why we're able to win,
- 25:13Speaker 3: not just our superstars at the top.
- 25:16Speaker 1: I'd vote for Grandy Mann as the commissioner, but I
- 25:19Speaker 1: don't think that's what we need here. But the question... Yes, yes.
- 25:25Speaker 1: But my question to you is back to kind of
- 25:27Speaker 1: what AJ was talking about.
- 25:29Speaker 2: The debate is.
- 25:31Speaker 1: throwing it, not really throwing a game, but understanding that
- 25:34Speaker 1: you have to win two of the next three. And
- 25:36Speaker 1: I take you back to 2018 when we were in
- 25:39Speaker 1: LA and we did the whole, you know, Wade Miley
- 25:42Speaker 1: one batter, and then we brought in big woo. Is that,
- 25:46Speaker 1: did you feel like in that moment, because I know
- 25:48Speaker 1: a lot of the players in our, on our roster
- 25:50Speaker 1: didn't know it was going to be happening. Did you
- 25:53Speaker 1: feel like we were kind of punting that game? And
- 25:56Speaker 1: does that send a different message to, to your team
- 25:59Speaker 1: if you're not bringing in Heron, if you're not going to,
- 26:02Speaker 1: you know, Gattis when you're down? Does it feel like
- 26:05Speaker 1: that message is being pushed to your team that Voter
- 26:08Speaker 1: wanted to try to avoid?
- 26:10Speaker 3: I think, if anything, it may bring a message to
- 26:12Speaker 3: the players you haven't used at this point. Again, we're
- 26:16Speaker 3: talking about Tanner Bybee. I mean, this is, what, 33
- 26:18Speaker 3: starts on the season. As AJ mentioned, opening day, and
- 26:21Speaker 3: I've been wondering that, too. I was like, maybe I
- 26:23Speaker 3: forgot something. Like, is he hurt and we don't know
- 26:24Speaker 3: about it? Have they lost trust in him? He's got
- 26:27Speaker 3: a four ERA. It's not terrible by no means. It's
- 26:29Speaker 3: not Cy Young, but it's definitely going to be competitive.
- 26:33Speaker 3: And especially when you're amped up in these situations in
- 26:36Speaker 3: the postseason, you get sparks from players you just don't
- 26:39Speaker 3: always expect to get and just the adrenaline of having
- 26:42Speaker 3: 40,000 to 50,000 people there in these winner-take-all games with
- 26:46Speaker 3: the crowd going nuts. You start to get a little
- 26:49Speaker 3: level of amped up in there. But when we were
- 26:51Speaker 3: in that situation in 2018- It didn't necessarily cross my
- 26:54Speaker 3: mind per se that, oh, you know, we're trying to conceive.
- 26:56Speaker 3: I know you catch, so you're a little more dialed into, okay,
- 26:59Speaker 3: this is who we should ideally be using in this situation. Wow,
- 27:03Speaker 3: we've switched and now we're using somebody else. So maybe,
- 27:07Speaker 3: you know, you get a little more sense of it
- 27:08Speaker 3: than I did. But I didn't look at it so
- 27:10Speaker 3: much that way. And I don't think these players do
- 27:12Speaker 3: just because they are a tick younger. You know, they're
- 27:16Speaker 3: just so excited. They're so happy to be in the movement.
- 27:19Speaker 3: But again, Steven Vogt's a catcher just like the two
- 27:21Speaker 3: of you. You all have some, the way you think
- 27:23Speaker 3: and see the game is a lot different than I do.
- 27:26Speaker 3: Even as a hitter, and of course, especially in the outfield,
- 27:29Speaker 3: I've always confused who's coming out of the bullpen too.
- 27:31Speaker 3: I'm looking and going, oh, they're bringing in so-and-so. So
- 27:34Speaker 3: sometimes it's always a surprise to me as well.
- 27:38Speaker 2: Well, Grandy, Tanner Bybee came in earlier in the postseason,
- 27:41Speaker 2: didn't pitch very well. They didn't give him a long leash.
- 27:43Speaker 5: So maybe they do have lost trust in him, which
- 27:44Speaker 5: is crazy for a guy they signed to a long-term deal.
- 27:47Speaker 5: And also, you know, have, opening day starts and all this.
- 27:51Speaker 5: So it's kind of a little bit crazy, but he
- 27:53Speaker 5: didn't get a lot of options and Hey, whatever.
- 27:55Speaker 2: Let's go to the other side.
- 27:56Speaker 5: Now, Tampa Bay is starting Freddie P Freddie P pitch
- 28:00Speaker 5: two days ago, right? Much like we saw Gavin Williams doing.
- 28:02Speaker 5: Then he came out and dealt against the white socks
- 28:05Speaker 5: after pitching the game before. So do you think there'll
- 28:07Speaker 5: be any effects on Freddie P coming out tonight in
- 28:10Speaker 5: game six? And will Kevin cashes be like, Hey, go
- 28:12Speaker 5: be yourself and let her eat.
- 28:15Speaker 3: Yeah. You know, we only had nine pitches in that outing.
- 28:17Speaker 3: And then we started to see the Marlins towards the
- 28:18Speaker 3: end of the season. bringing Sandy Alcantara to do his
- 28:21Speaker 3: bullpen side in a game. And, of course, the intensity
- 28:26Speaker 3: of throwing a bullpen in a game versus throwing it
- 28:29Speaker 3: actually in the bullpen with no hitters trying to actually
- 28:32Speaker 3: beat you is going to be slightly different. But I
- 28:34Speaker 3: think if you're going to ever do it, this is
- 28:36Speaker 3: the time to get it. He looked great in that timeout,
- 28:40Speaker 3: those nine pitches. He's back at home. He's comfortable. And
- 28:44Speaker 3: as Rasmussen said, you know, The biggest thing for him
- 28:47Speaker 3: was just come back and show how athletic you are.
- 28:50Speaker 3: And I think that's been the big turnaround of what
- 28:52Speaker 3: the Rays have been able to get from him. He's
- 28:54Speaker 3: going to feed off the crowd. You saw him get
- 28:56Speaker 3: amped up and excited in game two here. So I
- 29:00Speaker 3: think it's going to be similar. However, if you're going
- 29:04Speaker 3: to have any sort of success to them, everybody knows
- 29:08Speaker 3: that he is fastball Freddie. He is going to elevate
- 29:11Speaker 3: that fastball. Can you lay off of it? If you
- 29:14Speaker 3: can lay off of it, then you have a little
- 29:17Speaker 3: bit of a chance of success for him to hopefully
- 29:19Speaker 3: come down in the zone. But it's amazing to know
- 29:22Speaker 3: what pitch is coming and still not be able to
- 29:24Speaker 3: do anything with it. So I think that's just credit
- 29:27Speaker 3: where credit's due, not only to him, but to that
- 29:30Speaker 3: pitching staff of saying, okay, here's where you throw it
- 29:33Speaker 3: where it's not perceived to be too high. It looks
- 29:36Speaker 3: like they have a chance, but when they actually swing
- 29:38Speaker 3: at it, they have no chance. So I've enjoyed watching them,
- 29:41Speaker 3: especially now. And again, you know, you and I were
- 29:44Speaker 3: with him in 18 to see his development and to
- 29:47Speaker 3: be in a situation where he might get a chance
- 29:49Speaker 3: to go face his old team in the world series.
- 29:52Speaker 3: Just a cool situation to be in right now.
- 29:54Speaker 1: Do the guardians have an answer for Yandy Diaz? Yandy
- 29:58Speaker 1: Diaz was, uh, I mean, in the last, I think,
- 30:01Speaker 1: four seasons, he's hit 299. Like, he's got one of
- 30:06Speaker 1: the highest, I think it's like the eighth highest WRC
- 30:09Speaker 1: plus in the game. Do they have an answer for
- 30:12Speaker 1: a guy who takes balls... And anything on the plate,
- 30:16Speaker 1: he drives the opposite field and you leave it out
- 30:19Speaker 1: up over.
- 30:20Speaker 2: He's able to hit the ball.
- 30:21Speaker 1: I think he's like the sixth hardest exit velocity opposite field. Like,
- 30:25Speaker 1: do they have an answer for Yandy? Or are they
- 30:28Speaker 1: so focused on Junior, who they've been controlling pretty well,
- 30:32Speaker 1: that they're missing out on trying to get Yandy out?
- 30:36Speaker 3: It's so unique because he's getting hits in homers, but
- 30:40Speaker 3: he's also striking out a lot. So it's like they
- 30:42Speaker 3: they're able to get him out, but they can't consistently
- 30:45Speaker 3: get him out. And to your point, I mean, he
- 30:48Speaker 3: has a great awareness of the zone. He doesn't challenge anything.
- 30:52Speaker 3: I feel like he'd have probably four or five walks
- 30:54Speaker 3: in this series if he challenged a few pitches. But
- 30:57Speaker 3: he said he just doesn't do it. That's just not
- 30:58Speaker 3: his thing. So I feel like if you're going to
- 31:02Speaker 3: get him out, you got to get in there on him.
- 31:05Speaker 3: and try to not let him use those big, just
- 31:09Speaker 3: muscular arms. I mean, that cut in we show was
- 31:12Speaker 3: absolutely amazing. But when you're big and strong like that,
- 31:15Speaker 3: you got to extend them. And that's why he's got
- 31:17Speaker 3: so much power to the opposite field. You all were
- 31:20Speaker 3: talking about how it wasn't traveling so much at progressive field,
- 31:23Speaker 3: especially to center and left field, but it was moving
- 31:26Speaker 3: a little bit to right. We saw You know, a
- 31:28Speaker 3: ball get out from Yandy. We saw a ball end
- 31:30Speaker 3: up at the warning track on that side of the field.
- 31:33Speaker 3: But the center and left, it wasn't really doing too much.
- 31:36Speaker 3: But Yandy's a big boy and he eats that tomahawk
- 31:39Speaker 3: steak and he's ready to go and swing that thing.
- 31:42Speaker 3: So if you come in there on him and you
- 31:44Speaker 3: walk him, unfortunately, maybe you can get to some of
- 31:46Speaker 3: the rest of the guys there. But I mean, he's
- 31:48Speaker 3: been the couch. He's been exactly what you've needed as
- 31:50Speaker 3: a leadoff man in this situation.
- 31:53Speaker 5: Randy, can you imagine going, I think it's 713 plate
- 31:57Speaker 5: appearances and not questioning one call, especially when you have the.
- 32:00Speaker 2: Power to do that.
- 32:02Speaker 5: Like there's been a couple in this series alone that
- 32:04Speaker 5: have been pretty obvious balls. And he doesn't even think about,
- 32:09Speaker 5: I couldn't even imagine 700. I think it's 713 plate
- 32:12Speaker 5: appearances this year. And he has not challenged one time.
- 32:16Speaker 5: I think he's crazy. I mean, he can hit, but
- 32:18Speaker 5: he's crazy. I mean, my helmet would have been worn
- 32:21Speaker 5: out at times. I'm like, you suck, you suck, you suck.
- 32:24Speaker 3: And both of you have caught behind me. I'm not
- 32:27Speaker 3: the most vocal person up there. I've had some questionable calls,
- 32:29Speaker 3: but I get that little look. And all I have
- 32:31Speaker 3: to do is do this, then I might be able
- 32:33Speaker 3: to get a challenge. I don't have to say anything.
- 32:34Speaker 3: So there's definitely would have been a couple of them
- 32:36Speaker 3: I would have. But that's amazing. That's just, I guess,
- 32:39Speaker 3: just sticking within yourself, not getting too amped up. And
- 32:43Speaker 3: I think he made a decision that, hey, I'm just
- 32:45Speaker 3: not going to do it. But you can see the
- 32:47Speaker 3: frustration when you know a pitch is a ball and
- 32:49Speaker 3: you just watch just the reaction, the body language. And
- 32:52Speaker 3: you're like, wow, like that could completely change the at bat,
- 32:55Speaker 3: especially if it's a 2-2 or a 3-2 situation and
- 32:59Speaker 3: it's a strikeout or a walk or it puts you
- 33:01Speaker 3: in a good hitter's count versus a pitcher's count. Just
- 33:04Speaker 3: does so much more for you to allow you to
- 33:06Speaker 3: do even more damage if you do it and get
- 33:09Speaker 3: it right. I think it's kind of one of those
- 33:11Speaker 3: things that he needs to do it and actually get
- 33:13Speaker 3: it wrong to go. Oh, it actually wasn't that bad.
- 33:16Speaker 3: You know, I think that's the thing that I think
- 33:18Speaker 3: might be holding them back again. I just don't want
- 33:20Speaker 3: to lose it and mess it up for the rest
- 33:21Speaker 3: of my team. And sometimes you got to go ahead
- 33:23Speaker 3: and make that mistake and realize like it actually didn't
- 33:26Speaker 3: bother us too much in this situation. And I'm probably
- 33:29Speaker 3: going to get another opportunity where it's going to actually
- 33:32Speaker 3: benefit us and the team in general.
- 33:34Speaker 4: And that's my issue here. So, We're in the playoffs.
- 33:38Speaker 4: Every little moment could decide a game, could decide a series, right?
- 33:41Speaker 4: Let's say the Rays advance and there's a play in
- 33:44Speaker 4: the World Series or a pitch in the World Series
- 33:45Speaker 4: that doesn't go their way. So I wanted to cue
- 33:47Speaker 4: each of you guys really with a poll and then
- 33:48Speaker 4: we can get Grandy to explain what he would do here.
- 33:52Speaker 4: So Yandy hasn't practiced this in the regular season, probably
- 33:54Speaker 4: why he feels even more pressure if he's suddenly going
- 33:57Speaker 4: to try to do this in the fifth inning and
- 33:58Speaker 4: burns a challenge for the team. Do you think we're
- 34:00Speaker 4: at a point where after this series, let's say the
- 34:02Speaker 4: Rays advance and they got a couple days in the
- 34:04Speaker 4: off day, somebody like A.J., Kratz, Curtis, we'll start with you.
- 34:09Speaker 4: Would any of you guys, raise your hand, say something
- 34:11Speaker 4: to him? Be like, dude, this was cute for a while,
- 34:13Speaker 4: but we need to win a World Series. Raise your
- 34:16Speaker 4: hand if you would actually go up to him at
- 34:18Speaker 4: this point and say, hey, you can't do this anymore.
- 34:21Speaker 4: You're a top three hitter on the team. Would you
- 34:25Speaker 4: say something?
- 34:25Speaker 2: I thought you were going to let Grant answer.
- 34:26Speaker 4: I want to do a poll first. Raise your hand
- 34:28Speaker 4: if you would say something.
- 34:30Speaker 3: You'd say something?
- 34:31Speaker 4: That's what I wanted to check. Now, Curtis, I just
- 34:33Speaker 4: want to make sure you guys all would actually say something.
- 34:35Speaker 4: So how would you do it?
- 34:36Speaker 3: So I actually had a similar situation. Obviously, we couldn't
- 34:39Speaker 3: challenge it. But Kevin Long comes up to me when
- 34:41Speaker 3: he's my hitting coach. He goes, man, you just got
- 34:43Speaker 3: to say something. Now, again, he didn't tell me what
- 34:45Speaker 3: to say, how to do it, when to do it,
- 34:47Speaker 3: what pitches. He goes, you just got to say something.
- 34:50Speaker 3: And even just that enough goes like, OK, if I
- 34:52Speaker 3: do get something, I can ask, hey, where is that?
- 34:54Speaker 3: You know, I don't have to be disrespectful. And now,
- 34:56Speaker 3: especially with the challenge, you're not being disrespectful. But sometimes
- 34:59Speaker 3: it takes somebody just to say that it is OK
- 35:02Speaker 3: for you to do it. And that could be his
- 35:04Speaker 3: hitting coach. I'm not sure who would be the other more,
- 35:07Speaker 3: I don't think there is any other veteran hitter over
- 35:09Speaker 3: there that's more veteran than him, so it's going to
- 35:11Speaker 3: probably have to come from either the hitting coach or
- 35:14Speaker 3: from the front office coming down and having a meeting saying, hey,
- 35:17Speaker 3: collectively as a group, if you feel like you need
- 35:19Speaker 3: the challenge, go ahead. It is okay to challenge it
- 35:22Speaker 3: in these situations. Same thing for our catchers. I feel
- 35:25Speaker 3: like we've also had a couple games where there hasn't
- 35:27Speaker 3: been any challenges from the catchers in this series. A
- 35:30Speaker 3: little bit more in the National League series, but not
- 35:32Speaker 3: so much in this series, so Same thing to you
- 35:34Speaker 3: two as catchers. I mean, I'm not sure if there's
- 35:36Speaker 3: maybe something that's been told that let's hold, let's not
- 35:40Speaker 3: be as aggressive, or let's only do it in these
- 35:43Speaker 3: innings and beyond. But there seems like there could be
- 35:45Speaker 3: some reason why they're holding back a little bit.
- 35:48Speaker 5: Well, first of all, if you're looking at William Contreras,
- 35:51Speaker 5: he challenges every pitch the whole year.
- 35:53Speaker 2: I'm saying. I mean, he was.
- 35:55Speaker 5: Like every– there was times where he pumped Vegas when
- 35:57Speaker 5: we were doing the Brewers.
- 35:59Speaker 2: Just kidding, I'm adjusting my helmet.
- 36:01Speaker 5: And then he ran out a couple times. So you
- 36:04Speaker 5: can't really look at him. And, by the way, my
- 36:06Speaker 5: son is in college, okay? My son is in college,
- 36:08Speaker 5: and they have ABS, and he just had a fall game.
- 36:11Speaker 5: And they were doing practice. So they had one every
- 36:13Speaker 5: half inning where they could use one every half inning.
- 36:16Speaker 5: And I told him, I'm like, hey, if you're in
- 36:18Speaker 5: a bat and you think it's close, challenge it because
- 36:20Speaker 5: who cares?
- 36:20Speaker 2: You get another one and you're catching, and there's one
- 36:23Speaker 2: you think is close. Do it. Who cares? You only
- 36:25Speaker 2: learn by doing it.
- 36:26Speaker 5: And so, yes, if you get late in the game,
- 36:30Speaker 5: I mean, a lot of these times you have two
- 36:32Speaker 5: left in the ninth inning and you see some that
- 36:34Speaker 5: are way off because catchers or hitters are like, I'll
- 36:37Speaker 5: try it.
- 36:37Speaker 2: We have two. Why does it matter? Absolutely. If you
- 36:39Speaker 2: got them, you might as well use them like timeouts.
- 36:41Speaker 2: You don't get to go home with them. So use them.
- 36:45Speaker 3: Especially if it's up in the zone. That's the one
- 36:47Speaker 3: you see the best. So that one, I feel like
- 36:49Speaker 3: you have a chance to be the more successful on.
- 36:51Speaker 3: The one down can be a little question mark. And
- 36:54Speaker 3: I do feel, especially as a left-handed hitter, and AJ,
- 36:57Speaker 3: you know this, I've always felt that the ones that
- 36:59Speaker 3: missed the most are the pitches away to us, especially
- 37:01Speaker 3: from a righty. That was the one that I feel
- 37:03Speaker 3: like for whatever reason, that ball off the plate was
- 37:05Speaker 3: one that was just, man, I know that ball's off,
- 37:08Speaker 3: but they're calling it. They're calling it. And that's the
- 37:10Speaker 3: one where you can kind of go 50-50 on. Down,
- 37:15Speaker 3: I would probably avoid unless it's way down. Up, I'm
- 37:18Speaker 3: seeing pretty good. But off, that's the one that changes
- 37:21Speaker 3: the at-bat a lot because if they call that one,
- 37:23Speaker 3: then that gives the pitcher the ability to expand even
- 37:25Speaker 3: more so. And especially if no one's challenging it, no
- 37:28Speaker 3: one's questioning it, then I'm just going to continue to
- 37:30Speaker 3: stay out there. And that makes it tough as a hitter.
- 37:33Speaker 1: Granted, you know, I have to bring up food because
- 37:34Speaker 1: you always brought in the nice baked goods whenever we'd
- 37:37Speaker 1: go into Chicago.
- 37:38Speaker 2: But let me let me.
- 37:40Speaker 1: Find out about all the food that you were eating
- 37:42Speaker 1: here in this. Didn't you get all the food from Cleveland,
- 37:46Speaker 1: some different ballpark food from Cleveland and from Tampa?
- 37:49Speaker 2: Rate it. Tell us what you thought.
- 37:52Speaker 3: One of the things I've looked forward to in retirement
- 37:54Speaker 3: was getting concession stand food. They put all these advertisements
- 37:59Speaker 3: and these commercials up in the stadium and I'm smelling it.
- 38:02Speaker 3: I'm seeing it, but I don't get a chance to
- 38:03Speaker 3: get it. We finally got to right there. You see
- 38:05Speaker 3: the slider dog. It looks like a hot mess, but
- 38:09Speaker 3: it is crazy. It's a hot dog with pimento mac
- 38:13Speaker 3: and cheese. bacon, and topped with Froot Loops. It was
- 38:19Speaker 3: not my worst thing I had, and everyone that tried
- 38:21Speaker 3: it said, you know what, it actually works. I'm not
- 38:23Speaker 3: sure if I would rush back to get another one,
- 38:25Speaker 3: but I put that kind of in the middle. The
- 38:28Speaker 3: one thing that didn't do too well in Progressive Field,
- 38:31Speaker 3: they have kind of like an honor system where food's
- 38:33Speaker 3: just kind of sitting out, and you can pick up
- 38:35Speaker 3: a burger or pick up a bologna sandwich, then you
- 38:38Speaker 3: go to this kiosk and you touch the screen and
- 38:40Speaker 3: pay for it. Well, who knows how long it's been
- 38:42Speaker 3: sitting there. So I got this burger that was just
- 38:44Speaker 3: a tick cold. So that was on my bottom of
- 38:45Speaker 3: the list. The nachos at Progressive Field at Moment Show
- 38:50Speaker 3: were amazing. I know you just started showing this tomahawk
- 38:54Speaker 3: steak with the butter at Tropicana. That was number one.
- 38:58Speaker 3: Everyone's been asking for that. We're here tonight. I'm going
- 39:01Speaker 3: to go order about four or five of those things.
- 39:03Speaker 3: That was tender. It was flavorful.
- 39:05Speaker 2: Amazing.
- 39:06Speaker 3: That Cuban you see right there was delicious as well.
- 39:08Speaker 3: And if you both remember, the Cubans in the visiting
- 39:11Speaker 3: clubhouse in Tropicana were very good. This one's up there.
- 39:15Speaker 3: It tops it on top. So if you're coming there
- 39:17Speaker 3: to eat, oh, and one little tip. If you're a
- 39:19Speaker 3: fan at the game, go eat in the first inning.
- 39:23Speaker 3: Everyone's in their seats. Everyone's locked in. Of course, you
- 39:25Speaker 3: don't want to miss the action, but there's TVs everywhere
- 39:28Speaker 3: and there's no lines. So that's what I'm going to
- 39:29Speaker 3: be doing again tonight i'm gonna be making my rounds
- 39:31Speaker 3: at tropicana in the first inning to get some more.
- 39:34Speaker 5: Grub brandy quit stealing my skit bro my skit bro
- 39:39Speaker 5: every week on fox they bring us all the food
- 39:41Speaker 5: man you're not you're trying to.
- 39:43Speaker 3: Steal my skit i mean we gotta we gotta do
- 39:45Speaker 3: a comp you.
- 39:46Speaker 2: Know We do. We do.
- 39:47Speaker 5: Because I don't know, but if you get to go
- 39:50Speaker 5: to Milwaukee, they had brought wontons, which were delicious.
- 39:55Speaker 2: I mean, they had good food in Milwaukee and.
- 39:57Speaker 5: In San Diego. And they know every time we go places.
- 40:00Speaker 5: The tomahawk in Atlanta, though, is the giant one. The
- 40:03Speaker 5: one in Tampa looked a little small, but the one
- 40:05Speaker 5: in Atlanta is like enough to feed five people. It
- 40:09Speaker 5: literally can eat like five people. There's so much good
- 40:12Speaker 5: food in Major League Baseball. It's so good. And they
- 40:14Speaker 5: just bring it to us. And every, every time we
- 40:17Speaker 5: go into a stadium, our, our ops person, our runner
- 40:20Speaker 5: will say, what do you want to eat? And we
- 40:22Speaker 5: literally go through the, what do they have? And we
- 40:24Speaker 5: try to find the craziest thing and they bring them
- 40:26Speaker 5: all to us and we eat them all. We sometimes
- 40:28Speaker 5: eat them on the air. Sometimes you don't. And I
- 40:30Speaker 5: don't know if you saw, but we had the fried
- 40:31Speaker 5: chicken ice cream. I don't think you saw that, but
- 40:34Speaker 5: I don't know. I forget where it even was. We
- 40:36Speaker 5: had fried. It looked like fried chicken, but it was
- 40:39Speaker 5: ice cream. It had corn flakes around it for the skin,
- 40:41Speaker 5: vanilla ice cream. And the bone was like a chocolate
- 40:43Speaker 5: covered pretzel. It was fantastic.
- 40:46Speaker 2: I don't know where I was. It might have been Baltimore.
- 40:48Speaker 2: This is what we got to do.
- 40:50Speaker 4: Yankee Stadium.
- 40:51Speaker 2: Yankee Stadium, sorry. What's the favorite one you've had so far?
- 40:56Speaker 3: The favorite one I've had so far, wow, that steak
- 40:59Speaker 3: is up there. That was surprisingly amazing. The cheese curds
- 41:03Speaker 3: in Milwaukee, as you talked about. Pedro and Jimmy last year.
- 41:07Speaker 3: Go get some more of those. Those are really good.
- 41:10Speaker 3: Those have been the most recent ones, and then Yeah,
- 41:14Speaker 3: I think those have been the most recent ones. And
- 41:15Speaker 3: what we got to do, AJ, this is how we
- 41:17Speaker 3: need to do it. So they have the Michelin star rating.
- 41:19Speaker 3: They have the James Beard Award rating. So we do
- 41:22Speaker 3: an AJ Grandy rating of concession stand foods. We could
- 41:25Speaker 3: do it on a four-base system, single, double, triple homer.
- 41:29Speaker 3: And that way the fans know where to go eat
- 41:30Speaker 3: and where to avoid.
- 41:32Speaker 2: Hell yeah.
- 41:32Speaker 5: And by the way, don't be telling people, don't be
- 41:35Speaker 5: telling Tank and the boys in Tampa, they'll be mad
- 41:36Speaker 5: at you, Tom and all them guys, that you said
- 41:39Speaker 5: the Cuban in the stands was better.
- 41:40Speaker 2: If you go down there to say hi to them,
- 41:42Speaker 2: They're going to say, hey, hey, you're not allowed in
- 41:44Speaker 2: here anymore, Grandy.
- 41:46Speaker 3: This was just a good, hey, but that was definitely, hey,
- 41:47Speaker 3: but I did find out a little secret though. They
- 41:49Speaker 3: said now that the Cuban that they do up in
- 41:52Speaker 3: the concession stand is the same one they do in
- 41:55Speaker 3: the clubhouse. And I talked to those guys and they're like, no, no, no,
- 41:57Speaker 3: that's not how it used to be, but they have
- 42:00Speaker 3: changed it. So the ones we used to eat were customized,
- 42:03Speaker 3: made to order for us. But now I'm hearing that
- 42:06Speaker 3: the ones that you get in the stadium are the
- 42:08Speaker 3: ones the players are also getting. So, Still just as good,
- 42:10Speaker 3: but that ones we had. Those are the originals.
- 42:13Speaker 2: Okay.
- 42:14Speaker 4: So now fans, us fans get clubhouse quality.
- 42:17Speaker 3: They're the same.
- 42:18Speaker 2: Gosh, they're the same. I'll tell you this much, Randy.
- 42:21Speaker 2: You know this. People always say, you know, what's the
- 42:23Speaker 2: best clubhouse? They'll say, what's the best stadium?
- 42:25Speaker 5: And I always said, well, players judge it differently than,
- 42:28Speaker 5: you know, you look at the clubhouse, you look at
- 42:30Speaker 5: the food, the dugouts, and they're like, well, what's a
- 42:32Speaker 5: place you wouldn't think is good?
- 42:33Speaker 2: And I'd be like, Tampa. And they're like, what do
- 42:35Speaker 2: you mean? I'm like, the food in the Tampa Clubhouse
- 42:38Speaker 2: was the best. I mean, they had everything. Oh, the
- 42:42Speaker 2: little Mrs. Fields with the little oven.
- 42:45Speaker 3: Oh, my gosh.
- 42:47Speaker 2: It was, Tampa was really good.
- 42:49Speaker 3: Good cookies, some good food. So, yeah, some good places.
- 42:52Speaker 3: Some places you look forward to, some places you're like, ah, man,
- 42:55Speaker 3: I'm going to order out at this place.
- 42:56Speaker 4: Yeah. It's an advantage, right? They try to get every
- 42:59Speaker 4: edge they can to raise. They're like, let's put people
- 43:01Speaker 4: in food comas when they visit us.
- 43:03Speaker 5: Yeah, you go to Cincinnati, they give you Skyline Chili
- 43:04Speaker 5: and everyone's in the bathroom.
- 43:07Speaker 4: That's the plan.
- 43:07Speaker 2: Every time before a pregame, Skyline Chili.
- 43:10Speaker 4: Brzezinski looks five pounds lighter today.
- 43:12Speaker 2: Yeah, well, it's because he had Skyline Chili in Cincinnati.
- 43:15Speaker 1: Cincinnati and White Sox. You don't eat at those two places.
- 43:19Speaker 1: Cincinnati and White Sox.
- 43:21Speaker 2: White Sox has gotten better now.
- 43:22Speaker 4: It's gotten better.
- 43:24Speaker 5: And by the way, the White Sox– And, Grandy, by
- 43:27Speaker 5: the way, White Sox, the food in the stadium might
- 43:31Speaker 5: be the best in the league.
- 43:33Speaker 2: I'm not joking. I think so. The food in the
- 43:35Speaker 2: stands might be the best in the league. They got everything.
- 43:37Speaker 3: I go there just for lunch sometimes. I've had a
- 43:40Speaker 3: couple games this year where I've gone there. I've got
- 43:43Speaker 3: there at a 3 o'clock game, and I was out
- 43:46Speaker 3: of there by 4.30 just to eat.
- 43:48Speaker 2: I don't know who won.
- 43:49Speaker 3: I came there. That was my lunch, and I was
- 43:50Speaker 3: in and out.
- 43:51Speaker 2: You don't eat nothing, Grandy. Look at you. You look
- 43:54Speaker 2: like you run to the stadium to eat.
- 43:56Speaker 3: It's all mental. They hate me for it because I
- 43:59Speaker 3: say it's all mental. If you don't stress out about it,
- 44:01Speaker 3: it doesn't affect you.
- 44:03Speaker 2: There you go. True. Randy, we need to do that
- 44:05Speaker 2: for real, though.
- 44:05Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 44:06Speaker 2: We need to do the rating thing. We could kill
- 44:08Speaker 2: it on TikTok.
- 44:10Speaker 3: Let's do it. The AJ Grandy rating system, grand or bland,
- 44:14Speaker 3: and we just eat. We got a lot of stadiums
- 44:16Speaker 3: we got to get to to eat.
- 44:17Speaker 5: Hey, maybe then you could invite me to your charity
- 44:19Speaker 5: event since it is in Chicago.
- 44:20Speaker 2: I did play there for a little bit. I mean,
- 44:22Speaker 2: I'm happy.
- 44:22Speaker 3: Are you living in Chicago or how often are you
- 44:24Speaker 3: in Chicago?
- 44:25Speaker 2: I'm in Chicago a lot, but, I mean, I can
- 44:26Speaker 2: fly to Chicago. It's pretty cheap.
- 44:29Speaker 3: Come on out. I'm going to get you out there
- 44:30Speaker 3: the next time we do it. Oh, yeah, we had
- 44:32Speaker 3: Reinsdorf out this last time. He popped in right before
- 44:35Speaker 3: we had it, and we were going to have a
- 44:36Speaker 3: good amount of the White Sox guys, but rain again
- 44:39Speaker 3: affected us. But Tommy Pham was coming. Randall Gritchick was coming.
- 44:42Speaker 3: Colson Montgomery was coming. Trevor Richards was coming, but they
- 44:46Speaker 3: had to move the game up because of rain. So
- 44:48Speaker 3: I will definitely have you come on out next time.
- 44:51Speaker 2: Let's do it.
- 44:52Speaker 4: Rain or shine, AJ will be there.
- 44:53Speaker 2: Yeah, rain or shine. I don't melt. I ain't the
- 44:55Speaker 2: Wicked Witch of the West or whatever. I don't melt
- 44:57Speaker 2: from the water. And Tommy.
- 44:59Speaker 3: Tommy was there too, so you can be out there
- 45:00Speaker 3: with Tommy.
- 45:01Speaker 2: He came this past time. Great dude. Yeah.
- 45:03Speaker 3: Done.
- 45:04Speaker 4: It's settled. We got a lot figured out and sorted
- 45:06Speaker 4: out here. Grandy, we're looking forward to seeing you again tonight.
- 45:09Speaker 2: Wait, hold on. We got to ask him. Do the
- 45:11Speaker 2: Rays close it out tonight? Yandy said it's over.
- 45:14Speaker 3: I'm saying Yandy said it. We got fastball, Freddie. I
- 45:17Speaker 3: think so. I think it could be done. The big thing, though,
- 45:19Speaker 3: here's the one little kicker, though. The fans got to
- 45:23Speaker 3: come and be ready to do it. It was amazing
- 45:25Speaker 3: in games one and games two. There was about, like,
- 45:28Speaker 3: I think the capacity here is 40,000. Game one or
- 45:31Speaker 3: two was like 34, 35. And you could see it
- 45:34Speaker 3: in a couple spots. I'm not saying it totally affected it,
- 45:36Speaker 3: but here's your chance to go to the World Series.
- 45:39Speaker 3: I know the traffic is brutal. My cousin came to
- 45:42Speaker 3: the game. He didn't get home until about 1.30 in
- 45:44Speaker 3: the morning after game one and game two. But come
- 45:46Speaker 3: on out. If you guys want to do it, here's
- 45:48Speaker 3: your chance. Yandy's calling it. So come on out and
- 45:51Speaker 3: help them deliver.
- 45:52Speaker 4: Boom. That's the problem. We've talked a lot about it.
- 45:55Speaker 4: The location of that ballpark ain't it. And they're about
- 45:58Speaker 4: to fix it. But it's going to take four years
- 46:00Speaker 4: to make a new one. And fans are speaking right now.
- 46:03Speaker 4: But I'm with you. Hopefully they show up for this
- 46:05Speaker 4: one as their one went away. Good stuff, dude. Great
- 46:07Speaker 4: to catch up with you. Thanks for the extended time.
- 46:09Speaker 4: And everyone, make sure you check out the pre and
- 46:11Speaker 4: the post with Granderson and friends on TBS. Thanks, Curtis.
- 46:16Speaker 2: Thank you all.
- 46:16Speaker 3: Y'all have a good one.
- 46:19Speaker 4: Oh, baby. Looking ahead with SeatGeek. So we have ALCS
- 46:22Speaker 4: game six, maybe an ALCS game seven, and then the
- 46:26Speaker 4: World Series gets cranking. And I think it's worth mentioning
- 46:29Speaker 4: one more time that there is a chance for a
- 46:32Speaker 4: Brewers fan to plan a trip to, say, Tampa. Enjoy
- 46:37Speaker 4: some nice weather.
- 46:38Speaker 2: Tampa wins. I'll be there. I'm going.
- 46:40Speaker 4: Cheaper ticket.
- 46:41Speaker 2: I'm going home. I'm going.
- 46:42Speaker 1: Right.
- 46:43Speaker 4: So SeatGeek is the spot.
- 46:44Speaker 3: 10% off.
- 46:46Speaker 2: I wonder if I can use a golden ticket in Tampa.
- 46:48Speaker 2: I let him win in 2008 to get to the
- 46:50Speaker 2: World Series.
- 46:50Speaker 4: Does the golden ticket work in the playoffs?
- 46:52Speaker 2: Maybe I can get a golden ticket.
- 46:54Speaker 4: Does the golden ticket work in the playoffs?
- 46:56Speaker 2: No, I have my own golden ticket, though. It's called
- 46:58Speaker 2: a credential.
- 46:59Speaker 4: Oh, well, that's a different golden ticket.
- 47:00Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 47:01Speaker 2: He's talking about your gold card.
- 47:02Speaker 4: But MLB has a golden ticket.
- 47:03Speaker 2: Oh, gold card? I don't think the gold card works
- 47:06Speaker 2: in the playoffs.
- 47:06Speaker 4: I don't think so either.
- 47:07Speaker 2: I've never tried it. I don't know.
- 47:09Speaker 4: I don't think that's possible.
- 47:10Speaker 2: But if not, you know what we can do?
- 47:12Speaker 4: What?
- 47:12Speaker 2: We can always go SeatGeek. That's what I'm saying. If
- 47:15Speaker 2: my gold card doesn't work, I can always use SeatGeek.
- 47:17Speaker 3: Yes.
- 47:18Speaker 2: And I've used SeatGeek plenty. I use SeatGeek all the time.
- 47:23Speaker 4: And those games could be in Tampa Bay, where I
- 47:27Speaker 4: would almost guarantee it will be a cheaper ticket in St.
- 47:31Speaker 4: Pete than it will be in Milwaukee.
- 47:32Speaker 2: Agree? Yeah.
- 47:34Speaker 3: Yes.
- 47:35Speaker 2: Oh, yeah. Yeah. 100%.
- 47:37Speaker 4: It's not like the Rays have been to the World
- 47:38Speaker 4: Series often, right? No. Last time they were in the
- 47:40Speaker 4: World Series, nobody could go to the games.
- 47:41Speaker 2: I did.
- 47:42Speaker 5: I got COVID from Justin Turner.
- 47:43Speaker 2: Just kidding, Justin. I did get COVID, though. At the game.
- 47:46Speaker 2: I was at game six. I was at the Snell game.
- 47:48Speaker 2: It was in Texas. And I tested positive for COVID,
- 47:53Speaker 2: and I had the flu for a couple days.
- 47:54Speaker 4: It wasn't from Justin. And then in, what is it, 2008,
- 47:58Speaker 4: the Rays were there. So they've had a little more
- 48:01Speaker 4: recency with their World Series appearance versus Milwaukee not sniffing
- 48:04Speaker 4: a World Series since 82. I know.
- 48:06Speaker 2: Get your tickets, because this is going to be banging.
- 48:08Speaker 3: Damn.
- 48:09Speaker 5: I promise you, if you haven't been to a game
- 48:10Speaker 5: in Milwaukee, if you can get a ticket on SeatGeek
- 48:12Speaker 5: for Milwaukee, go. Because it is banging. It is an
- 48:16Speaker 5: awesome place to go watch a game. Especially, it's going
- 48:18Speaker 5: to be a little chilly. They might have to close
- 48:20Speaker 5: the roof. It's going to be loud.
- 48:23Speaker 2: Loudest place I've ever been in the playoffs. By far.
- 48:27Speaker 1: And the whole, like, going to the Rays to watch
- 48:29Speaker 1: the game, Phillies fans did that in 08. Like, you
- 48:33Speaker 1: could basically go for three games the price of you
- 48:36Speaker 1: going to one in Philly.
- 48:38Speaker 4: I'm serious. It's an underrated thing to do a trip
- 48:41Speaker 4: like that. And it's really fun. Take a friend, a
- 48:43Speaker 4: family member, whatever it is. Territory 10, 10% off your
- 48:45Speaker 4: next set of tickets at SeatGeek. Any tickets, not just baseball.
- 48:48Speaker 4: We're just talking ball because the World Series is coming up.
- 48:51Speaker 4: You can click the link in the description of the
- 48:53Speaker 4: episode to download the app if you haven't already. And
- 48:55Speaker 4: then the code gets automatically added to your account to
- 48:57Speaker 4: use now or later. Do you guys see and appreciate
- 49:01Speaker 4: Taylor Walls?
- 49:02Speaker 3: Ben Whitelaw.
- 49:04Speaker 4: Tweeting, who is the best shortstop defender in the StatCast era?
- 49:07Speaker 4: Both defensive runs saved and StatCast agree. Taylor Walls, best
- 49:11Speaker 4: over the last decade, outs above average, became public in 2016.
- 49:14Speaker 4: Nobody can match his production. Arguably the best defensive shortstop
- 49:17Speaker 4: of this century based on defensive runs saved.
- 49:22Speaker 2: Good thing he can play defense because he struggles with
- 49:24Speaker 2: the bat. He's really good defensively.
- 49:26Speaker 4: He can bunt sometimes.
- 49:28Speaker 2: Sometimes. Sometimes he can't though. This series he ain't been
- 49:31Speaker 2: able to bunt.
- 49:32Speaker 4: He is a difference maker out there.
- 49:34Speaker 2: He's good defensively now.
- 49:36Speaker 1: Look at the difference. They started Patrick Bailey last night.
- 49:39Speaker 1: The Guardians started Patrick Bailey because they were like, I
- 49:41Speaker 1: need a little bit.
- 49:42Speaker 2: More offense here.
- 49:44Speaker 1: And normally Austin Hedges catches Parker Messick. And the Rays said,
- 49:49Speaker 1: it don't matter. We're fine with a guy that just
- 49:51Speaker 1: picks it at one position. So it's not apples to apples,
- 49:54Speaker 1: but there's definitely decisions that are made. And putting Taylor
- 50:00Speaker 1: Walls out there, not the flashiest, but clearly the best
- 50:04Speaker 1: from that stat.
- 50:06Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 50:08Speaker 4: I mean, he passes the eye test and then the
- 50:10Speaker 4: number test. I mean, he is on another planet. Somebody
- 50:15Speaker 4: did a report at one point and said he anticipates
- 50:18Speaker 4: everything as if it's coming in like a soft roller.
- 50:22Speaker 4: Like he just charges.
- 50:22Speaker 5: He's really, you know what? He's really good. He's super
- 50:24Speaker 5: aggressive going to get it.
- 50:25Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 50:25Speaker 5: But he's also under control. So that's the best, the
- 50:28Speaker 5: best defenders, as you know, are super aggressive. They attack
- 50:31Speaker 5: the ball, but then they have their feet and they're
- 50:33Speaker 5: under control. Some people like the Flash. I'll take him
- 50:37Speaker 5: nine times out of nine.
- 50:42Speaker 2: I love these. A long time ago. I love this.
- 50:44Speaker 2: Go ahead. Tell everyone. The Timeless Ticket.
- 50:47Speaker 5: So back in the day, you could buy this ticket
- 50:49Speaker 5: for $ 1, 000, and it raised a million dollars for the
- 50:52Speaker 5: Brewers because they were so cash-strapped with Doug Budseeling and
- 50:55Speaker 5: Mark Antonacci was the owner that they had to sell these.
- 50:58Speaker 2: They sold 1,000 of them. It raised them a million bucks,
- 51:01Speaker 2: and they can cash it in, Krauts, anytime they want. Well,
- 51:04Speaker 2: guess what?
- 51:05Speaker 5: That time is now. And there's a lot of people
- 51:07Speaker 5: that have already tried to cash in. I thought the
- 51:08Speaker 5: brewers were like, oh, what are we doing?
- 51:10Speaker 4: I think they're doing it.
- 51:11Speaker 2: Are they?
- 51:11Speaker 4: I think so. And I haven't done enough homework. I
- 51:13Speaker 4: know there was someone online complaining like they didn't like
- 51:16Speaker 4: their ticket.
- 51:16Speaker 2: And I'm like, well, that's not fair. Well, it didn't
- 51:17Speaker 2: really say where you get your ticket.
- 51:19Speaker 4: That's not fair.
- 51:20Speaker 5: It could be a standing room only ticket. Like a
- 51:22Speaker 5: timeless ticket should have got you like in Bernie's chalet
- 51:24Speaker 5: or something.
- 51:25Speaker 4: Sure, but you'd have to have that written. And I
- 51:27Speaker 4: don't know what was written. I don't know all the
- 51:29Speaker 4: fine print. But I do know that the get-in price,
- 51:32Speaker 4: you still made money on that. Although, if you invested
- 51:34Speaker 4: in the bank, in basically anything like a CD or something,
- 51:38Speaker 4: you would have made more.
- 51:39Speaker 2: Back in the day. But it doesn't matter. It's a
- 51:41Speaker 2: brewer's investment.
- 51:42Speaker 4: Get-in price is more than $ 2, 000.
- 51:44Speaker 2: I'm sure it is.
- 51:45Speaker 4: Yeah, so you made out.
- 51:47Speaker 5: 100% you made out. Plus, it's cool to... I don't
- 51:50Speaker 5: know if I would turn it in, Kratz. I think
- 51:52Speaker 5: I always want to have that. I think it'd be
- 51:54Speaker 5: cool just to have it.
- 51:55Speaker 2: I don't know that I'd actually want to turn it
- 51:56Speaker 2: back in. I'd be like, I want to keep the ticket,
- 52:00Speaker 2: but just know that I have it. I get it.
- 52:02Speaker 2: I can't, you know, use it. Like, that's a trophy.
- 52:05Speaker 2: It's a trophy.
- 52:06Speaker 1: So many people buy, like, a season or a share
- 52:11Speaker 1: of the Packers. You get nothing from it. You are
- 52:13Speaker 1: technically buying a share of the Brewers, giving them $ 1, 000,
- 52:16Speaker 1: and then you cash it in. I don't care where
- 52:19Speaker 1: you sit. You're in the game.
- 52:21Speaker 4: 400 section. Yeah, they're doing 400 section. They are seats, so...
- 52:24Speaker 4: You're good. You got it. Hey, so the other day
- 52:29Speaker 4: when Freddie P came into the game in the sixth,
- 52:33Speaker 4: we put out a tweet about it, which we do
- 52:36Speaker 4: a ton of times on FT, social team crushing it
- 52:38Speaker 4: behind the scenes. One fan replied, panic move. You shouldn't
- 52:41Speaker 4: have to use your game two starter as a reliever
- 52:43Speaker 4: in game four. I wholeheartedly disagreed with that at the time.
- 52:48Speaker 4: This is the one time when you can do that.
- 52:51Speaker 4: Give me one inning. We've seen it done many times.
- 52:53Speaker 5: Listen, I crushed the Gavin Williams move when he came
- 52:56Speaker 5: in and pitched against the White Sox.
- 52:57Speaker 2: He went out and shoved. So I don't know what anymore.
- 53:01Speaker 2: I don't know if he can do it. Certain guys
- 53:02Speaker 2: can do it. Certain guys can't do it.
- 53:03Speaker 5: Randy Johnson came in and pitched in game seven in
- 53:06Speaker 5: 2001 after having pitched the night before, right?
- 53:08Speaker 2: John Lester has done it. There's been a long list
- 53:11Speaker 2: of guys.
- 53:11Speaker 4: Patrick Corbin, 2019.
- 53:13Speaker 5: Yeah, there's a whole list of guys that can do it,
- 53:15Speaker 5: and they're successful. So some guys can do it. Some
- 53:18Speaker 5: guys can't.
- 53:19Speaker 2: I don't know anymore, Kratz. I'll be honest. I don't
- 53:21Speaker 2: know what's right and what's not right anymore.
- 53:22Speaker 4: Red Sox, last time they won a World Series, they
- 53:24Speaker 4: kept doing it, right? Porcello and Sale closed out the
- 53:28Speaker 4: World Series. Price, I think, did a little bit, although
- 53:30Speaker 4: I don't remember if he was even starting at that time.
- 53:32Speaker 4: But I just remember I was at that series, Kratz,
- 53:35Speaker 4: and same thing. They were just like, cool, when's your
- 53:36Speaker 4: throw day? All right, we're getting an inning out of you.
- 53:39Speaker 1: It's okay to say it's not the same for everybody.
- 53:42Speaker 1: It's okay to say Gavin Williams' situation is different than
- 53:45Speaker 1: Freddie P's. It's okay to say that Yordano Ventura in
- 53:50Speaker 1: 2014 should not have come into the game as a
- 53:53Speaker 1: starter in a wild card game. Had never thrown out
- 53:55Speaker 1: of the pen. Like, different situations. Yamamoto coming in in
- 53:58Speaker 1: game seven.
- 53:59Speaker 2: You know what? If it doesn't work out, was it
- 54:02Speaker 2: the best choice? It works out.
- 54:03Speaker 1: So it's all about the success that Freddie P has tonight.
- 54:07Speaker 1: But it's also understanding what kind of limits does he
- 54:11Speaker 1: push on his side day and how's he going to
- 54:13Speaker 1: feel after those nine pitches. Nine pitches are one thing.
- 54:17Speaker 1: It's warming up to get ready for those nine pitches,
- 54:20Speaker 1: and then you reset it down. So every single person
- 54:23Speaker 1: is different.
- 54:24Speaker 4: Yeah, Clayton Kershaw, Robbie Ray. I'm just trying to think
- 54:27Speaker 4: of some guys on the other side that gave up
- 54:29Speaker 4: big knocks in the past.
- 54:30Speaker 5: There's been a lot of guys that have given it up,
- 54:32Speaker 5: but there's been guys that have done it and been great. Yamamoto,
- 54:36Speaker 5: I mean, but I think to me the bigger thing
- 54:38Speaker 5: is starting and then coming in, it seems to be
- 54:41Speaker 5: easier than– coming in, and then starting a couple days later.
- 54:46Speaker 5: That's the one that seems to catch guys every once
- 54:48Speaker 5: in a while. When they come in in relief, they're usually–
- 54:52Speaker 5: most of the time they're decent.
- 54:54Speaker 4: You're saying between starts is the time to do it, not.
- 54:57Speaker 2: No, no, no. I'm saying more people have success.
- 55:00Speaker 5: More people have success when they start like Yamamoto and
- 55:03Speaker 5: then pitch. Randy Johnson started, pitched the next day. Yamamoto started,
- 55:07Speaker 5: pitched the next day. Those are the– once you have
- 55:10Speaker 5: start in between– and then pitch start again is the
- 55:13Speaker 5: ones where we've seen trouble.
- 55:14Speaker 4: Got it.
- 55:14Speaker 2: Even though Gavin Williams proved us all wrong, so.
- 55:16Speaker 4: True.
- 55:23Speaker 3: I am your general manager.
- 55:27Speaker 4: Oh, I am your GM. We'll talk more about this
- 55:31Speaker 4: in the offseason, too, and I like that front-end animation.
- 55:34Speaker 4: The Baltimore Orioles have a new general manager, and his
- 55:37Speaker 4: name is Jared Banner. Now, Mike Elias is not gone.
- 55:40Speaker 4: He's still the president of baseball operations, but figured we'd
- 55:43Speaker 4: chat about this for a couple minutes as the news
- 55:45Speaker 4: came out this morning. He joins Elias in Baltimore after
- 55:50Speaker 4: nearly two decades working a range of executive jobs with
- 55:53Speaker 4: the Cubs, the Mets, and the Red Sox. Worth mentioning again,
- 55:55Speaker 4: since this is a different segment, that a big star
- 55:58Speaker 4: on the resume would be the PCA acquisition. He was
- 56:01Speaker 4: helpful with the Cubs since he was coming over as
- 56:03Speaker 4: Mets farm director to be like, hey, if we're trading
- 56:06Speaker 4: with the Mets, we should look at this PCA guy.
- 56:09Speaker 4: I think he's got star potential.
- 56:12Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 56:12Speaker 2: I mean, it was a first round pick, so it
- 56:14Speaker 2: wasn't like he came out of nowhere.
- 56:15Speaker 3: No, I know.
- 56:16Speaker 2: And it was, and at the time he, I don't
- 56:20Speaker 2: think he was that highly.
- 56:21Speaker 5: Regarded in the Met side as he was, you know,
- 56:23Speaker 5: and Banner liked him probably more than other people. So
- 56:26Speaker 5: I mean, yeah, this is a good move. I, I
- 56:29Speaker 5: don't know anything about the guy. I mean, other than
- 56:31Speaker 5: I read his resume and he's done some nice things, but,
- 56:34Speaker 5: Is he going to have the power? Eric, that's my question.
- 56:36Speaker 5: Is he going to have the power or is it
- 56:38Speaker 5: still going to be Mike Elias and Jared Banner just
- 56:40Speaker 5: going to say, I can do whatever, you know, can
- 56:43Speaker 5: I do what I want? Or is it still Mike
- 56:45Speaker 5: Elias and now I just might bring some fresh ideas,
- 56:48Speaker 5: but nothing's really going to change because it's still.
- 56:51Speaker 2: The head guy. I don't know. That's what we have
- 56:53Speaker 2: to see how it plays out. Yeah, great.
- 56:55Speaker 5: Jared Banner, congratulations, dude. I hope you kick ass there.
- 56:59Speaker 5: But what kind of power is he going to really have?
- 57:02Speaker 1: Talk about old school baseball, the label GM doesn't mean
- 57:05Speaker 1: what it meant when AJ and I played. It's now
- 57:09Speaker 1: the assistant GM. The only way this works out really,
- 57:13Speaker 1: really well, because Banner's not going to have this like, oh,
- 57:18Speaker 1: this is the plan that I have. And Mike Elias
- 57:20Speaker 1: is going to be like, oh, this is unbelievable. The
- 57:24Speaker 1: only way this works is what we're talking about with
- 57:28Speaker 1: the three teams. I've seen all three of these teams.
- 57:32Speaker 1: I've talked to their front offices, job offers with these
- 57:34Speaker 1: teams because of how they handle what they do in
- 57:38Speaker 1: the Guardians, the Brewers, and the Rays. It's a collective.
- 57:44Speaker 1: It's a group together. Every employee is making decisions. Ultimately,
- 57:49Speaker 1: there's a boss. Ultimately, there's a boss. So if the
- 57:52Speaker 1: Orioles bring in a new general manager or a general
- 57:57Speaker 1: manager because they didn't have a named general manager before.
- 58:01Speaker 2: Is his voice heard?
- 58:03Speaker 1: And does he create an environment where Mike Elias has failed?
- 58:09Speaker 1: And I'm not saying Mike Elias has failed in this
- 58:12Speaker 1: type of, in doing this. It's just they've failed because
- 58:15Speaker 1: they've had all this prospect. They've had their window and
- 58:18Speaker 1: the window's shutting now. Is he brought in and able
- 58:22Speaker 1: to speak into what, Mike Elias has failed at or
- 58:27Speaker 1: isn't able to get the most out of. Because we
- 58:32Speaker 1: don't know. We can make our speculations. We can say, okay, yeah,
- 58:35Speaker 1: you know what? They should have traded this guy. They
- 58:37Speaker 1: should have not prospect hoarded. That's our opinion. But the
- 58:41Speaker 1: best organizations all speak as a collective.
- 58:45Speaker 4: Yeah, and you have to be able to speak up
- 58:47Speaker 4: to your boss, who will be Mike Elias in this case.
- 58:50Speaker 4: A lot more of this in the offseason. Got to jump.
- 58:52Speaker 4: Be right back. This is your moment, AJ.
- 59:07Speaker 2: My moment?
- 59:08Speaker 4: You can show the tweet. Yeah. You know, I don't
- 59:11Speaker 4: really like this often, but.
- 59:13Speaker 2: What's my moment? You'll see. This is the moment.
- 59:16Speaker 4: You're going to like it. You want to read what
- 59:17Speaker 4: it says?
- 59:19Speaker 2: Bears fans are chanting. Packers. That's the Packers. At Lambeau Field. No,
- 59:24Speaker 2: that's not what it says. The whole state is bought in.
- 59:27Speaker 4: Packers fans this weekend were chanting, let's go Brewers at Lambeau.
- 59:33Speaker 4: It's taking over Wisconsin.
- 59:35Speaker 2: They should. They're in the World Series for the first
- 59:36Speaker 2: time since 82.
- 59:37Speaker 5: I mean, that's not as bad as the refs in
- 59:39Speaker 5: the Florida State-Miami game, Scott, but it was close.
- 59:44Speaker 2: And Scott probably doesn't even know what I'm talking about,
- 59:45Speaker 2: but that's okay. Lightly. Not enough. Yeah, I don't know.
- 59:49Speaker 2: Sorry about Jalen Hurts, Kratz.
- 59:50Speaker 5: I know we're not allowed to talk football, but that's
- 59:52Speaker 5: a big loss.
- 59:54Speaker 2: It's okay.
- 59:55Speaker 1: I'm with Scott on football, but The city of Milwaukee,
- 59:59Speaker 1: I'll never forget in 2014 in Kansas City, we went
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: to a Chiefs game, and the Chiefs game got out
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: of hand. Chiefs were blowing them out, and the whole
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: stadium started chanting, let's go Royals. The whole city just
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: has a different vibe when your team makes it, and
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: it's been so long. 2014 was a long time for
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: the Royals between their times in the World Series and
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: playoffs in general. Milwaukee is... about to crumble. The whole
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: city has energy right now. So I love hearing this.
- 1:00:31Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:00:31Speaker 4: Somebody was asking me the other day who I was
- 1:00:33Speaker 4: rooting for in the playoffs. And I said, you know,
- 1:00:35Speaker 4: basically when I think about it, I root for the
- 1:00:38Speaker 4: fan bases that are starved. So in this case, it
- 1:00:41Speaker 4: was kind of easy. Most of the fan bases besides
- 1:00:43Speaker 4: the Dodgers were starved, right? Milwaukee, Cleveland.
- 1:00:46Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:00:47Speaker 4: But we see that sometimes with big market teams too.
- 1:00:50Speaker 4: Mets haven't won since 1986. So if the Mets were
- 1:00:52Speaker 4: in that spot and it was a team that had
- 1:00:54Speaker 4: just recently been there, then I'd like to see the
- 1:00:56Speaker 4: Mets get there, right? White Sox, obviously, have only done
- 1:01:00Speaker 4: one big thing in about a century. So I would
- 1:01:04Speaker 4: be excited for White Sox fans in that case.
- 1:01:06Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:01:07Speaker 4: That's what I look at.
- 1:01:08Speaker 5: I think it's awesome that the Brewers and the whole
- 1:01:09Speaker 5: state has bought in. The whole area has bought in,
- 1:01:11Speaker 5: as they should. And I think the people of Milwaukee
- 1:01:15Speaker 5: are awesome. Packers fans, I don't know. I can't really
- 1:01:17Speaker 5: comment on them. I'm more of a Bears kind of guy.
- 1:01:19Speaker 5: I'm more of a Bear down. But, you know, we
- 1:01:22Speaker 5: all make mistakes. And people that decide to root for Packers,
- 1:01:25Speaker 5: Jason Habel, Daniel Zine. People that I know that are
- 1:01:28Speaker 5: Packer fans.
- 1:01:29Speaker 2: Eric Whipple. Trying to think of all the Packer fans
- 1:01:32Speaker 2: off the top of my head. They're not very smart.
- 1:01:35Speaker 2: Tough teams for you. We're staying on. White Sox and Bears.
- 1:01:39Speaker 2: Not a lot of Victoras. It's okay. We grind, Kratts.
- 1:01:43Speaker 2: We're grinders. 85-85. You're grinding. You're grinding.
