- 0:24You'll hear from Casey in just one moment.
- 0:27For the hills, for shoes, with staff.
- 0:31Self-service.
- 0:33Our guest on the dugout show, Mets manager Casey Stengel.
- 0:38Casey, I'm sure that you realize everybody in the world of sports is happy to hear that you're going to be back as manager next year.
- 0:44Yes, that's true. I have received many, many telegrams of friends that have been calling for me most all my life from a baseball standpoint since.
- 0:55You know, that are interested in my years as a player and I would say managerial career.
- 1:04I'd have to say that that was for a number of people that are elderly and that had seen me play baseball and also saw that I was rather successful as a manager in a number of years.
- 1:19You never lose your enthusiasm for the game.
- 1:21You get older like everybody else gets older too for that matter, but you never lose your zest, Casey.
- 1:27Well, no, I feel healthy enough. I'm strong enough. I'm quick enough.
- 1:31If you feel all right, you ought to stay managing and if you are a man that doesn't feel well, you shouldn't stay managing in the major leagues.
- 1:41You should decide, let somebody else do it because a well man always does a better job.
- 1:47Casey, going into a series like this with one of the teams fighting for a penalty, did you give your team any pep talk before the series started?
- 1:54Well, I did the first day we went over the hitters. Naturally, you should do that. You should try to win every day that you've been in the league.
- 2:02And up to this year, we've had so many difficulties to play a number of the teams.
- 2:08The only team that I think that we bothered was Cincinnati. In the last series, Cincinnati came in and caught us playing very poor baseball.
- 2:20And they actually put them back in the pennant race. And then when they come here to St. Louis, this club here is a good baseball club, well managed.
- 2:29And the players are terrific players.
- 2:32I believe that in this series, the first game, it was just unfortunate that hard hit balls were caught by my receivers and the pitcher Jackson pitched two marvelous a game when it was one to nothing.
- 2:44The game yesterday, everybody knows that the Cardinals had an off day and you can't catch, the pitching had to be poor because you can't go up into the grandstand and catch the ball.
- 2:55And therefore, that's where they were handicapped just now.
- 2:58Casey, in all your years, can you remember a race where three teams went into the final day with a chance?
- 3:05No, I have been in one game in one year. I think it was 49 when I was with the Yankees in which the Red Sox were a game ahead of me.
- 3:17And then we evened it up and we took two, we had to play a series, we took two out of three and just nosed them out of the pennant.
- 3:24Casey, which of these three teams are still fighting it out for the pennant do you think would have the best chance against the Yankees in the World Series?
- 3:32Well, to tell you the truth, I think that all three clubs will only be handicapped with one thing and that's the fact that they've had to extend their pitching staff too much at the end of a season.
- 3:42Now, that really could affect the National League club. But I honestly believe that your club here at St. Louis will give them a splendid battle because you're skilled in a number of ways and have speed.
- 3:56And I think Cincinnati would do a splendid job in the World Series. I really figure that that just would be great if they could have four or five days rest, or rest their pitching staff.
- 4:10Especially if there's a playoff, then the Yankees ought to be in a great shape.
- 4:14Well, if there's a playoff, yes, they'd get the rest maybe too long, although they don't allow you to rest too long. They make you work out every day of the World Series and keep you on edge.
- 4:24Casey, do you see the Mets coming out of the wilderness for next year?
- 4:29Well, yes, I do in some ways. We get more home runs than we did last year or the year before. We got younger personnel on the team. I think McMillan has helped our ball club at shortstop.
- 4:43He's kept our pitching better. And I think that Hunt is a very good ball player. He was voted by the ball players as the best second baseman for this season.
- 4:53And I honestly believe that Hickman is a very good man and capable in the outfield. He can hit balls distance. Christopher now is a much better batter than he ever was in his life.
- 5:04He used to only play against right-handed pitching, I mean left-handed pitching. And now I think he's very splendid. He can hit some of the right-handed pitches better than anybody that's on our staff.
- 5:15I would have to say that he's a much improved batter.
- 5:19Casey, it's a challenge to a ball club who's not in the race to be able to play one of the contenders and have a hand in deciding who wins it.
- 5:28Well, yes, you know, but you really have to go out there and put the man, I suppose, when he signs the contract to play until the last day and the ninth inning.
- 5:39And that's the reason why our club maybe at this year time is doing very good. We lost two games in Milwaukee, I thought, because we didn't have the ability.
- 5:51But I think here, Jackson, just was a little too great to allow your club to get on basis and handicap it.
- 6:00Casey, a million thanks for this chat and continued success to you. And last time I mentioned it, I was going to give you a bull of a 17-jewel watch that told you the time of the day and the time of the month.
- 6:13You also asked me to tell you the time to take your picture out, and I hope you have to take several pictures out today.
- 6:18That's good. If I was you, I'd have that same thing.
- 6:21Okay.
- 6:22The error presented by Bush for various age longer for natural combination and full body.
- 6:31Get to know Bush for area gets an old flavor.
- 6:40And by the American Tobacco Company.
- 6:45Makers of Salmonella, famous cigarettes for those who are particular about taste.
- 6:53Now, it's time for St. Louis Cardinals, Lake Road.
- 7:03A beautiful baseball day in St. Louis. Hello again, everybody.
- 7:07This is Harry Carey with Jerry Gross with Roy May in Cincinnati on the final day of the baseball season, maybe a perfect day for baseball.
- 7:18The Cardinals who are tied for first place with the Cincinnati Reds, one game ahead of the Philadelphia Phillies who play the Reds in Cincinnati today.
- 7:26It'll be Cisco for the Mets today, Simmons for the Cardinals.
- 7:30Let's quickly go to Cincinnati and Roy May to see what the pitching situation is over there.
- 7:37Thank you, Harry, and good afternoon, everyone. In Cincinnati, it's a gorgeous day, bright, sunny, shining, the temperature in the 60s.
- 7:43The two starting pitchers are warming up far below us. Jim Bunning for the Phillies, his record 18-8, and another right-hander, John Sartoros, for the Reds.
- 7:55Sartoros' record is 9-12. We're going to have a capacity crowd here, and there's a lot of excitement in the air in Cincinnati, as I'm sure there is in St. Louis, Harry.
- 8:04All right, fine, Roy, we'll be coming back to you. So you got the situation there.
- 8:09There's a surprise we thought maybe Maloney would pitch for the Reds, but John Sartoros, who shut the Phillies out one-to-nothing last week in Philadelphia, will be pitching for Cincinnati.
- 8:20And here it'll be Kurt Simmons pitching for the Cardinals, and Gail and Cisco for the New York Mets.
- 8:27And we'll be back with the starting lineups and then the exciting play-by-play in just one moment.
- 8:32When the day's been tough and the going's been hard, and brother you just rested and you need a reward, well gather our friends and neighbor and friend, the time is surely here.
- 8:51Joyful tapping good-bye to the Bush from Ashland, New York. This is Kyle Smith. I'd like to tell you friends that you just peeped by a better beer.
- 9:05Yes, sir Bush is H. Moe for natural carbonation, and my darling good buddy Bush is rude the way that beer was meant to be brewed, the natural way.
- 9:16So get Bush, it's so tapping good. So enjoy cool tapping good-bye with this Bavarian beer, with this Bavarian beer.
- 9:37The umpires are coming down the line in a moment. Johnny Keene, the Cardinal Manager, Kasey Stengel, the New York Met manager,
- 9:44who is our guest on the Dugout Show, will be coming out to exchange the official batting orders.
- 9:49Here now to give you the lineups for today's game and bring you up to date is Jerry Gross.
- 9:55All right, Harry, thank you very muchThe wind we might mention right now is blowing from the left field corner toward the right field line,
- 10:01and it would help a ball hit up toward the right field bleachers out toward center possibly blow it out.
- 10:07It could be a big factor in this afternoon's ball game.
- 10:10A look at the lineups in the ball game for Kasey Stengel's Mets leading off, and at second base it will be Bobby Klaus.
- 10:17Klaus in the leadoff position. Macmillan, Roy Macmillan, will hit second. He'll be the shortstop.
- 10:24Batting third and a man who has ripped us all year long, Joe Christopher, the right-handed hitting right fielder in this afternoon's game.
- 10:31Batting in the cleanup spot, it will be Jim Hickman, Hickman of former Cardinal.
- 10:36Hickman will be in center field. He'll hit cleanup. In the fifth spot, the third baseman, Charlie Smith.
- 10:42Smith batting fifth down at third. Bob Taylor, the hawk will be the catcher for Stengel's Mets.
- 10:49He'll be catching Galen Sisco. Taylor batting sixth, working behind the plate.
- 10:54Ed Cranepool, who has really hurt us in this series so far and hurt us all year long, as Harry has mentioned, batting seventh.
- 11:02Cranepool will be the first baseman. And George Altman in left field.
- 11:06Altman hitting eighth in the order out in left.
- 11:09Galen Sisco with a record of six victories and 18 setbacks will start on the mound for Stengel's crew,
- 11:16his record against the Redbirds this year, one victory and one setback.
- 11:20His earned run average on the season, 3.45.
- 11:25So Sisco, the right-hander, warming up down the right-field line prior to the ballgame.
- 11:31Simmons already has concluded his warmups to our left, down the left-field lineup.
- 11:36And let's now take a look at the Cardinals' starting lineup.
- 11:39Manager Johnny Keene will go with Kirk Flood, leading off in center.
- 11:43Lou Brock out in left field, batting second. White will hit third, he'll be at first.
- 11:47There go the Cardinals in the final game of the regular season, 1964.
- 11:53Captain Kenny Boyer will be hitting cleanup at third.
- 11:57That's sixth, or rather fifth, and will be a shortstop.
- 12:01Tim McCarver will be catching Mike Shannon out in right field.
- 12:05Dal Maxwell playing in place of the injured Julian Javier.
- 12:09We heard his back in the ballgame yesterday.
- 12:12Dal Maxwell will have the job at second base, he'll be batting eighth.
- 12:17And Kirk Simmons is out on the mound to start for the Cardinals.
- 12:21He's 18 and 9, one and two against the Mets.
- 12:24Right now, the capacity crowd our national anthem.
- 13:54Great crowd on hand, Marty Bronson singing the national anthem.
- 13:58Before we give you the play-by-play, we'll take ten seconds for station identification.
- 14:02This is the Cardinals' baseball network.
- 14:05KMO-X and KMO-XFM, St. Louis.
- 14:07Red weather brings mosquitoes out.
- 14:09Repel mosquitoes with camoside repellent to save repellent.
- 14:12Camoside with full-way repellent action.
- 14:24This is Jerry Gross with Harry Carrey back at Busch Stadium.
- 14:28The wind, 16 miles an hour, blowing out from left field the line toward the right field line.
- 14:34We're set to go with the final game of the regular season, and here to bring you all the exciting action,
- 14:38The voice of the Cardinals, here's Harry Carrey.
- 14:41Okay, Jerry, a beautiful day, and we're all set to go.
- 14:45Kurt Simmons, who has pitched good ball against the Mets all year long,
- 14:49and Galen Sisco, who has done likewise against the St. Louis Cardinals.
- 14:53Simmons has won one and lost two.
- 14:55He lost to the Mets 4-3 on a two-out, ninth inning home run, July the 9th,
- 15:01and 3-2 on July 19th here in St. Louis.
- 15:04He beat the Mets 2-1, September the 22nd in New York.
- 15:08Galen Sisco lost to the Cardinals 5-1, May the 9th, beat them 2-1 on September the 23rd.
- 15:14A tough right-hander who always has pitched well against the Cardinals.
- 15:19Eddie Vargo, the playdump bar, we're all set to go.
- 15:26Well, let's see if everybody's equipped with their transistors.
- 15:29You got transistors around?
- 15:31Okay, we'll keep you posted then.
- 15:37The one left to go on here is Bobby Klaus, hitting 2-21,
- 15:41four homers and 16 runs about it in.
- 15:46Kurt Simmons gets ready to win, as Jerry told you, blowing strongly towards right field.
- 15:50Here's the pitch on the left, and it's a fastball outside.
- 15:53It'll be Klaus, McMillan, and Christopher here in the first.
- 15:56The Mets have won the first two games of the series.
- 16:00The National League race is in a two-team tie.
- 16:02Here's the pitch on the way.
- 16:04It takes a strike over the outside corner, belt high, and that evens it up a ball and a strike.
- 16:10The St. Louis football Cardinals lead the Washington Redskins 14-10 in the second period.
- 16:17One ball, one strike.
- 16:19Bobby Klaus, who hit a home run yesterday.
- 16:21Kurt Simmons getting ready.
- 16:23Into the wind of the pitch on the way.
- 16:25There's a fly ball, right field.
- 16:27Flood way back. He's there. He's going to make the catch. He does.
- 16:33Oh, that ball got up into the wind, which is blowing strongly towards right field.
- 16:37Now, Simmons, being a left-handed pitcher, will have an advantage so far as nullifying the left-handed batters in the Met lineup.
- 16:48The Cardinals will be facing a right-hander, so their left-handed batters, Brock White and McCarver, will be helped by the wind.
- 16:57Here's the pitch now to Ryan McMillan.
- 17:00And it's a fastball, strike called, hit the outside corner after the knee.
- 17:04One strike and no ball.
- 17:06Electricity in the air. You could cut over the night.
- 17:10A supercharged afternoon in St. Louis.
- 17:13One strike, no ballThe wind up, the pitch on the way. Here it is.
- 17:17Strike two called. Fastball after the knee.
- 17:21A lot of possibilities.
- 17:23The Cardinals could win the pennant today.
- 17:25The Cardinals could lose the pennant today.
- 17:27The Cardinals could finish in a two-way tie today.
- 17:30The Cardinals could finish in a three-way tie today.
- 17:33Two strikes, no ballsThe pitch on the way. Here it is.
- 17:37A little low.
- 17:39And outside. Two strikes and a ball.
- 17:43One out on the first.
- 17:45Ryan McMillan, the veteran shotstop, batting 214 with one homer and 25 runs batted in.
- 17:51Now the wind. Here's the pitch on the way.
- 17:54A bouncing ball followed on the third baseline.
- 17:57Wes Westrom coaching over there.
- 18:01Two strikes and a ball.
- 18:06Robinson coaching at first. Westrom at third.
- 18:10One out, nobody onThe ball game at the top of the first inning.
- 18:13Here's Simmons winding the pitches on the way.
- 18:16Sloak Kerr fouled back out of play into the stands. First souvenir of the day.
- 18:21Two strikes and a ball.
- 18:23The Yankees quenched their pennant yesterday.
- 18:25They know they're going to be in the World Series, but the National League doesn't know yet.
- 18:30Any one of three ball clubs might play the Yankees.
- 18:34Two strikes and a ball. One out, nobody on.
- 18:37McMillan to hit it.
- 18:40Here's Simmons into the windup. Here's the pitch on the way.
- 18:44It's a little bit outside.
- 18:46Just barely missed the strike zone.
- 18:51The Phils went down in order in the top of the first at Cincinnati.
- 18:56Two balls, two strikes, one out. McMillan to bat it.
- 19:01Now to signal Gibbett.
- 19:03Into the windup, here's the pitch on the way.
- 19:06Swing on, a little pop fly, short right field coming in for it.
- 19:09It's Shannon. He's there. He's got it.
- 19:13McMillan popped to Shannon and right.
- 19:15That's two out.
- 19:17Seems strange not to see Javier at second base, but he injured his hip yesterday.
- 19:24And Darrell Maxwell is playing in his place.
- 19:28In fact, Javier might be sidelined several days.
- 19:34Two men are out. Joe Christopher to bat it, hitting 3-0-1 with 16 homers and 76 runs about it in.
- 19:42Simmons gets setThe windup now, the pitch is on the way.
- 19:46Slow curve, he bunched down the third base line, and it's going to be a base hit.
- 19:50Beautiful. Bunny picked the perfect pitch.
- 19:52On a change of pace, Christopher bunned down the third base line.
- 19:57There was no play at all. It's a hit.
- 19:59He'd bunned that way in the first inning yesterday and beat it out to load the bases.
- 20:04Simmons has won his last five decisions.
- 20:11Not his last, but six decisions.
- 20:20But this ball club gives him trouble.
- 20:22Here's Jim Hickman with 11 homers and 57 RBI.
- 20:25He's batting 259.
- 20:27Now the stretch from the belt, the pitch. Here it is.
- 20:30It's a fastball low, ball one.
- 20:32One ball, but no strike.
- 20:37Hickman, yesterday, had a couple of hits, drove in two runs in the first inning.
- 20:45Now the stretch by Simmons, here's the pitch.
- 21:01A capacity crowd on air.
- 21:05A dramatic setting for the final game of the season. Final game, maybe.
- 21:12One ball, one strike.
- 21:15The stretch, the pitch.
- 21:18A high pop fly. We're going to be out of the first inning, I think.
- 21:21Maxwell is out. Shannon coming in.
- 21:23And he's got the ball.
- 21:25Hickman pops to Shannon and shot right.
- 21:29One hit, no runs, no errors. One left.
- 21:32Now into the bottom half of the first inning, no score in the ball game.
- 21:39Particular about taste? You bet I'm particular. And my Pelmels prove it.
- 21:47Particular about taste? You bet I'm particular. And my Pelmels prove it.
- 21:53You hear it everywhere. Why?
- 21:56Because Pelmels natural mildness means just one thing, smooth, freezing, crisp.
- 22:02Particular people take particular pleasure in the good taste of Pelmels.
- 22:11The flavor's blended over, under, around, and through.
- 22:16You learn that particular good taste is so get particular pleasure like particular people do.
- 22:23In the good taste of Pelmels.
- 22:26Be particular. Smoke a long cigarette that's long on flavor.
- 22:31Buy Pelmel famous cigarettes outstanding.
- 22:34And they are fired from the American tobacco company.
- 22:40Before Kurt Flood leads off, let's go to Cincinnati. Roy, anything happening?
- 22:45No score here in the bottom of the first inning. Nobody on.
- 22:48And there's one out with Chico Luis, the better.
- 22:51And by the way, as in St. Louis, there's a rather stiff breeze blowing toward the right field here.
- 22:57And it should be a definite help to the left-handed hitter.
- 22:59We might see a few in the right field bleachers today.
- 23:03So there, the wind condition is the same as here with the right field section having the wind advantage.
- 23:10All right, here is Kurt Flood to lead it off, batting 311 for the season.
- 23:15And this little fellow's had some here, 210 hits.
- 23:20Galen Sisto on the hill. He has won.
- 23:24His record isn't a good one, but he pitches tough baseball.
- 23:29He's won six, lost 18. All set to go.
- 23:34Former Ohio State University star.
- 23:37Kurt Flood with four homers and 45 runs batted in, hitting 311.
- 23:41Into the wind of the pitch on the way.
- 23:43The curve ball in there, a strike called, a good overhanded curve.
- 23:47One strike and over.
- 23:50Bush, Bavarian, beer.
- 23:52Your host. What an exciting finish.
- 23:56Three teams with a chance to win the pennant on the final day.
- 23:59Here's the pitch. Curve a little bit outside. That evens it up.
- 24:03Again, Sisto came with the overhanded curve ball.
- 24:06Bob Hawk Taylor from Metropolis, Illinois, behind the plate for the Mets, goes out to talk to Galen Sisto.
- 24:14Right-handed batter digging in. Bernd Benson coaching at third.
- 24:18Joe Schultz at first.
- 24:21Now the sign given. One ball, one strike.
- 24:26Into the wind up. Here's the pitch on the way.
- 24:30It's a fastball, lowball, two. Two balls and a strike.
- 24:34The wind blowing towards right field as we have to keep repeating because it might be a factor.
- 24:41Two balls and a strike.
- 24:44Galen Sisto delivers. Here it is.
- 24:48There's a line drive in the center, but it's going to be caught.
- 24:51Hickman is there and he has it.
- 24:54Broad line to Hickman in center. That's one out. Here's Lou Brock.
- 24:57Here's a guy who could take advantage of that wind.
- 25:00Batting 314 with 14 homers, 58 runs out of this.
- 25:10Left-handed batter up there. Lou Brock, his left wrist is taped.
- 25:17The wind blows strongly towards the pavilion roof.
- 25:24Now the wind. Here's the pitch on the way to Brock and it's low.
- 25:27Roy May quickly. What happened at the bottom of the first?
- 25:31Reds went down in order, so at the end of one there is no score here in Cincinnati.
- 25:37No score at the end of one in Cincinnati, as you heard.
- 25:40Here's the pitch on the way. Brock hits a base hit up the middle.
- 25:43A ground ball in the center field.
- 25:46And Brock is on there. He's going to try for second.
- 25:48Here's a throw. He's in there.
- 25:52Jim Hickman momentarily fumbled the ball and Brock never did hesitate.
- 26:00Probably be a hit in the air. That's what it is.
- 26:03Here's Jimmy, who's looking forward to doing his fifth World Series.
- 26:08If the Redbirds make it, the scoreboard operator flashes the air sign.
- 26:13So we have a man in scoring position with one out.
- 26:16Roy Hickman with a great arm, you know.
- 26:18Just momentarily fumbled the ball and Brock never did hesitate.
- 26:22That indicates there's no pressure when you can do things like that.
- 26:26Here's Bill White batting 302, 20 homers, 100 RBI.
- 26:31Listen to this crowdThe fervor is building a bird early.
- 26:35The pitch too wide. Here it is.
- 26:37A line drive to the shortstop who leaps and makes the cut.
- 26:42White line to McMillan, who leaped to grab the ball.
- 26:45And here's Boyer hitting 294.
- 26:50Boyer with 24 homers and 118 runs batted in.
- 26:54Bouting 294.
- 26:56White hit his ball good, but right at McMillan, the shortstop, who leaped and grabbed it.
- 27:03Lou Brock in scoring position.
- 27:05We're in the first inning.
- 27:08Gale and Sisco beat the Cardinals 2-1 the last time he faced them.
- 27:18Signal given.
- 27:20Ready for the pitch.
- 27:25Now the stretch and the hesitation.
- 27:28And the pitch is on the way. Here it is.
- 27:31Whoa! Inside almost. Hit him.
- 27:35One ball and no strikes.
- 27:38Two out in the bottom of the first.
- 27:40No score.
- 27:48Kenny Boyer hoping to drive in the first run of the day.
- 27:52There's the stretch.
- 27:54Sisco ready from the belt.
- 27:56And here's the pitch.
- 27:58Inside again, he's crowding him with his fastball.
- 28:02And so it's two balls, no strikes.
- 28:06The runner at second base, two out.
- 28:12Beautiful baseball afternoon in St. Louis.
- 28:16Boyer straddles the plate.
- 28:19The stretch, the hesitation.
- 28:22The pitch.
- 28:24Outside, ball three.
- 28:26Three and nothing now on Boyer.
- 28:28Takes a look at Vern Benson. They might turn him loose here.
- 28:32Boyer can pump that ball into the stands in either direction.
- 28:38Three balls, no strikes.
- 28:40Two out.
- 28:43Right-handed batter digging in.
- 28:45Gale and Sisco getting ready.
- 28:49Over the head, down to the belt. Here's the pitch.
- 28:52Line drive foul into the stands and left bale.
- 28:56They turned him loose with three balls and no strikes.
- 28:59And the Cardinals certainly haven't approached this game as if they're under any pressure.
- 29:04Brock with daring base running.
- 29:09Kenny Boyer allowed to hit a three and nothing pitch, which he had hard but foul.
- 29:15Three balls, one strike, two out.
- 29:17A man in scoring position, first inning.
- 29:20Like to get out in front of these fellows once.
- 29:24Now the sign.
- 29:27The last three games, the nets of one have all been from the Cardinals.
- 29:35They beat us two to one on the 23rd in New York and then lost eight in a row
- 29:42and then won the first two games of the series.
- 29:45So the only team they have beaten in two weeks are the Cardinals.
- 29:51Three balls, one strike.
- 29:55Hawk Taylor talking to Gale and Sisco.
- 29:59Beautiful afternoon.
- 30:01Just absolutely perfect. An Indian summer day.
- 30:05Bright, warm, brilliant sunshine with a delightfully cool, invigorating breeze.
- 30:13A ballpark jam packed.
- 30:17A dramatic setting for the final game of the season.
- 30:22Three balls and a strike, the strikes.
- 30:25And the pitch now to Boyer.
- 30:27Strike two, a curve ball hit the outside corner.
- 30:30He didn't like it.
- 30:31And now it's three and two.
- 30:37That was a curve that Sisco broke overhand.
- 30:41What group would be next?
- 30:43Boyer up there.
- 30:45A runner in scoring position in two outs.
- 30:48Three balls, two strikes.
- 30:51Sisco gets sucked, rock a lead.
- 31:00The crowd anxious for a base hit.
- 31:04Now the stretch, the hesitation.
- 31:06From the bow.
- 31:08And the pitch.
- 31:10Before he walked in.
- 31:12Cardinals have runners at first and second with two outs.
- 31:18Here's Dick Groat who could put us out in front.
- 31:23Groat hitting 291.
- 31:28With one homer and 69 runs about at it.
- 31:32Groat hits the ball deep in the right center.
- 31:37And he's a homer on threat today the way the wind is blowing.
- 31:41If any ball hits deep in that direction, it's going to be carried well.
- 31:46Now the stretch.
- 31:48From the bow.
- 31:50The pitch to Groat, here it is.
- 31:52It's a strike over the outside corner at the knee.
- 31:56Dick Groat, veteran shot stop.
- 32:00Right-handed about it.
- 32:03Runners at first and second and two outs.
- 32:07Now to signal-giver.
- 32:13The hesitation.
- 32:15The pitch on the way.
- 32:17Nice foul out of plays and a whole strike too.
- 32:20He was trying to go in the right field but Sisco threw the ball inside to him.
- 32:26Which made it difficult and he hit the ball off his fist.
- 32:31Mayor Tucker sitting down in the cardinal box.
- 32:39Mr. and Mrs. Bush.
- 32:44Two strikes, no balls.
- 32:46Right-handed hitter digging in.
- 32:48Kaelin Sisco ready.
- 32:52Now the stretch.
- 32:56Groat in the hole, two strikes and nothing.
- 32:58The pitch from the bow.
- 33:00And here it is.
- 33:02Oh boy, barely missed the strike zone.
- 33:05Anything going on quickly in Cincinnati, Roy?
- 33:08There is now one man on as Captain Shockley just dropped a single in the left field.
- 33:15There's one out and Tony Taylor will be the batter.
- 33:20All right, so the Phillies are batting in the second inning with one on, one out.
- 33:25And here it is, big groat with a count of two strikes and a ball.
- 33:34Signal given.
- 33:36Runners at first and second.
- 33:43Kaelin Sisco gets ready.
- 33:46Here's the pitch on the way.
- 33:48Outside curve, ball two and the count evens at two and two.
- 33:53Kaelin Sisco trying to hit those corners.
- 33:59Just barely missed that time.
- 34:01Two balls, two strikes.
- 34:03This fellow, once he gets you leaning, will jam you with his fastball as he did on the second strike to Groat.
- 34:10Two balls, two strikes.
- 34:13Right-handed hitter waits.
- 34:16Now the stretch from the bow.
- 34:19The pitch to Groat.
- 34:21And here it is.
- 34:23A bouncing ball this inning might be over.
- 34:25The pitch is going to have to cover.
- 34:26There's the toss and he is up.
- 34:28Groat bounces out from Cranepool to Sisco.
- 34:32And it is no runs, one hit, no errors, two left.
- 34:36At the end of one in St. Louis, the Phillies, the Cardinals nothing, the Mets nothing.
- 34:43We go to the top of the second inning here.
- 34:46And Charlie Smith, who's a home run threat.
- 34:49He's got 17 of them this year, steps up to the plate.
- 34:52Batting 240 with 57 RBI.
- 34:57Right-handed hitter digging in.
- 35:00No score.
- 35:01We go into the second inning.
- 35:03Coach Simmons gets set.
- 35:04Into the windup, the pitch is on the way.
- 35:07There's a high pop fly going towards left field.
- 35:10Groat goes out, calls for the ball.
- 35:12He's under it.
- 35:14He's got it, went away.
- 35:16Charlie Smith popped a groat in short left.
- 35:19One out, and that will bring out Bob Taylor, Nick Dan Hawk, from Metropolis, Illinois.
- 35:37Ed Cranepool would be next.
- 35:40Right-handed batter up there, Taylor.
- 35:43The Cardinals are now half of the second to lead off with McCarver, Shannon, and Maxville.
- 35:47Here's the pitch.
- 35:48It's a fastball low and away.
- 35:51One ball, no strikes.
- 35:53Kurt Simmons, trying for his 19th victory.
- 35:59Now to wind the pitch.
- 36:01And here it is.
- 36:03It's a strike over the outside corner.
- 36:05He threaded the needle that time.
- 36:07One ball and one strike.
- 36:11One man out.
- 36:13Here's the pitch on the way.
- 36:15Slow curve outside.
- 36:17Two balls and a strike.
- 36:21Bob Taylor the hitter.
- 36:23We're in the second inning.
- 36:27Now to signal given.
- 36:29Here's the pitch on the way.
- 36:32There's a drive.
- 36:33Way back, way back in the left center.
- 36:36It may be Brock.
- 36:37Makes a sensational pass.
- 36:39Holy cow, unbelievable.
- 36:42Luke Brock, a backhanded shoestring catch in left center.
- 36:46A remarkable play, two away.
- 36:50Holy cow, I've never seen one to match that.
- 36:57He didn't seem to have a chance.
- 36:59And the wind is blowing the other way, taking the ball away from him.
- 37:03He just outran the ball.
- 37:06A spectacular backhanded shoestring catch in deep left center while running at full speed.
- 37:15Here's Eddie Cranepool now.
- 37:18Left hand hitter.
- 37:19The wind, the pitch on the way.
- 37:22Line and a short center.
- 37:23Flood coming on.
- 37:24He's there.
- 37:25The inning is over.
- 37:30So the Mets go down one, two, three, thanks to a remarkable play.
- 37:34Listen to the hand that Brock is getting as he comes in here.
- 37:38Listen.
- 37:46And it's nothing across.
- 37:48At the end of an inning and a half, no score in this ballgame.
- 37:52Keep your eyes open, friend.
- 37:54If it hasn't happened yet, it's bound to happen soon.
- 37:59You'll see a sleek, elegant new car you don't recognize.
- 38:03You'll find yourself wondering what it is.
- 38:06And I'll tell you right now to save you the worry.
- 38:09The big, beautiful car is the all-new Mercury for 1965.
- 38:15You've never seen a Mercury like this before because there's never been a Mercury like this before.
- 38:21It's longer, more luxurious, clearly in the continental tradition.
- 38:26And once you get a chance to look it over closely,
- 38:29once you take it out for a test drive, you'll know right off.
- 38:34There's nothing like it in the medium price field.
- 38:37See, drive, admire the all-new Mercury for 65 at your nearest St. Louis area Mercury dealer.
- 38:48Just to give you an idea about the excitement that exists here.
- 38:53The scoreboard man on the top of the second for the Mets made nothing.
- 38:58He put the bottom of the second up before he put the top of the second up.
- 39:03Who's excited?
- 39:05Here's McCarver to lead it off.
- 39:07Tim could take advantage of this breeze.
- 39:10We're in the bottom half of the second inning, a game marked by a remarkable catch by Lou Brock.
- 39:17Now to signal-give it.
- 39:21There's the wind-up on the pitch on the left.
- 39:24It's a curve ball into the dirt ball one.
- 39:27One ball, no strike.
- 39:32It's nothing, nothing at the end of one in Cincinnati.
- 39:35In a moment we'll flash to Roy May over there.
- 39:41One ball, no strike.
- 39:44Left-handed batter waiting. Tim McCarver, here's the pitch by Sisco.
- 39:48It's a strike call. Quickly, Roy, anything happen in the top of the second?
- 39:52We're at the end of the bottom of the second now, Harry.
- 39:55There's still no scoreThe Rebs coming to bat with Robinson, Johnson, and Edwards.
- 40:00All right, no score at the end of an inning and a half in Cincinnati.
- 40:05Tim McCarver with a count of one ball, one strike.
- 40:08Left-handed batter hitting 284, the pitch on the way.
- 40:11Ball inside, just barely missed the inside corner.
- 40:16Gale and Sisco pitches to good spots.
- 40:20Two balls and a strike. Mike Shannon will be next.
- 40:24Second inning, no score.
- 40:27That's the way it is in Cincinnati with the Phillies and the Reds.
- 40:34Now the sign given, two balls, one strike.
- 40:37A windup, here's the pitch on the way.
- 40:39A hot shot, it's a ball down the left-hand line.
- 40:42Here's McCarver around first. He's going to go to second with a double.
- 40:46He hit the ball right off the bat. A double for McCarver.
- 40:52He didn't get around on that ball, and he hit it off the end of the bat.
- 40:55He didn't really hit it hard.
- 40:58It hit the bag fair and trickled into the Cardinal bullpen in left field.
- 41:03So the Cardinals have a leadoff double here in the second.
- 41:06He hit that ball, Harry, right off his right hip.
- 41:09Actually, it looked as though the ball might have shot in and it would have been a ball.
- 41:13But he hit it off the hip, unlocked himself somehow, and we have a runner on second with nobody else.
- 41:18And Mike Shannon will be the batter here.
- 41:22The Cardinals trying to break out in front, something they haven't been able to do.
- 41:27Neither one of these two games previously in the series.
- 41:32Lost 1-0 Friday night, 15-5 yesterday.
- 41:36Here's the stretch, and now the pitch on the way.
- 41:39He's foul-tipsed at strike one. Mike Shannon hitting 262.
- 41:45He's had nine homers and 42 runs batted in.
- 41:49The Reds are batting in the bottom of the second at Cincinnati with no score.
- 41:54The Cardinals are batting in the bottom of the second in St. Louis with no score.
- 41:58One strike and no ball.
- 42:01Now the signal given.
- 42:04Right-hand batter waiting.
- 42:07Galen Siscoe, broad-shouldered, right-handed.
- 42:12Takes his time, gets his sign.
- 42:17Now from the belt.
- 42:20The pitch is on the way.
- 42:23Folded back trying to hit the right field.
- 42:26Two strikes and no balls. He's in the hole now.
- 42:30McCarver let off with a double. Shannon up there now.
- 42:34With Dowd-Maxville due next, followed by Kurt Simmons, who's not a bad-hitting pitcher.
- 42:39Last of the second inning.
- 42:45Right-hand hitter digging in.
- 42:47Siscoe, a very methodical, deliberate worker out there.
- 42:52He's in no hurry.
- 42:55Got nothing to do after today until next spring.
- 42:59Two strikes and no ball.
- 43:03Now the sign.
- 43:07Takes a lot of time. He's ready now from the belt.
- 43:10And here's the pitch on the way.
- 43:13There's a line drive to the left field. It's going to drop in the third base.
- 43:16Here's the run around third base. He's going to try to score.
- 43:18Here's a throw to the plate. He is safe. There's Shannon, class of second.
- 43:22He is out.
- 43:26Shannon singles to left, scoring McCarver.
- 43:30But he's out trying to take second on the throw to the plate, which was cut off by the third baseman,
- 43:35Charlie Smith, and fired down to Bobby Klopp.
- 43:39So the Cardinals are out in front, one to nothing on Shannon's 43rd run batted in.
- 43:44Let's pause quickly. This is the Cardinals baseball network.
- 43:48KMOX FM, St. Louis.
- 43:50Concrete and steel are important to progress. They move from mine to mill to work.
- 43:55Wabash Cannonball wheels. In the heart of America, brought to you by Wabash Cannonball Freight Service.
- 44:02This is Harry Carrey with Jerry Gross at Bush Stadium in St. Louis with Roy May in Cincinnati covering the pennant fight for you.
- 44:16Maxfield takes the first pitch outside. One ball, no strikes.
- 44:24Here's the pitch. Sidearm and it's bounced far.
- 44:28One to nothing in favor of the Cardinals.
- 44:39Well, our friends over the downhouse sent over a Redbird cushion or pillow.
- 44:45And we're using it. Maybe it'll bring us some luck today.
- 44:49One ball and one strike.
- 44:52Here's the pitch on the way.
- 44:54Maxfield swings and pops up. Easy off.
- 44:59Second baseman there. Hey, the wind almost gave him trouble and Klaus had to make a one-handed stab.
- 45:06Two out now and here's Kurt Simmons, the pitcher.
- 45:09One to nothing in favor of the Redbirds. We're in the bottom of the second.
- 45:12It's the first time in this three-game series that the Cardinals have ever led.
- 45:22With a victory, the Cardinals are sure of at least a tie.
- 45:29If they win, the very worst they can do is play in Cincinnati tomorrow.
- 45:38And the best they could do would be to have clinched the pennant.
- 45:42Here's the pitch to Simmons. He fouled it back.
- 45:46If the Cardinals win and the Reds lose, the Cardinals will be the National League champion.
- 45:54If the Cardinals win and the Reds win, there'll be a playoff in Cincinnati starting tomorrow
- 45:59with the second game here Tuesday and the third game if necessary here Wednesday.
- 46:09If the Reds lose and we lose, it'll be a three-way tie.
- 46:13Here's the pitch. Strike call, the fastball. Two strikes and no ball.
- 46:19A double by McCarver and a single by Shannon has given the Cardinals the lead here in the second inning.
- 46:28Now the wine. Here's the pitch on the way.
- 46:31A little outside and the count, two strikes and a ball.
- 46:38If the Cardinals win and the Reds lose, the Cardinals will be the National League champion.
- 46:46If the Cardinals win and the Reds win, there'll be a playoff in Cincinnati starting tomorrow
- 46:51with the second game here Tuesday and the third game if necessary here Wednesday.
- 47:01If the Reds lose and we lose, it'll be a three-way tie.
- 47:05Here's the pitch. Strike call, the fastball. Two strikes and no ball.
- 47:11A double by McCarver and a single by Shannon has given the Cardinals the lead here in the second inning.
- 47:20Now the wine. Here's the pitch on the way.
- 47:23A little outside and the count, two strikes and a ball.
- 47:32There's no score at Cincinnati with the Reds batting in the second.
- 47:37Two strikes, one ball. Left-handed batter waits.
- 47:42Galen Siscoe gets set. A wind and here's the pitch on the way.
- 47:47A bouncing ball to the left of the third baseman, a great stop, and now the throw.
- 47:51He is out as Cranepool made a one-handed pick up of the low throw.
- 47:55So that was a fine play all the way around. One run, two hits.
- 47:59No errors and nobody left. At the end of two innings in St. Louis, the Cardinals won them. That's nothing.
- 48:09Before we go into the top of the third, let's go to our man in Cincinnati. Right?
- 48:15We're now at the end of two as Marty Keough just flies deep to center to retire the side.
- 48:21So we're going into the third, still no score in Cincinnati.
- 48:27Okay, nothing, nothing up there, so we're a little bit better off. We're leading one to nothing.
- 48:32Here is George Altman eluded off against Simmons and the first pitch is right at his head and he ducks out of the way.
- 48:38Ball one. One ball and no strikes. Nobody on and nobody outThe ball game in the third.
- 48:44Boy, a spectacular play by Lou Brons. Bob Taylor, but at least a double and perhaps a triple.
- 48:52There's the pitch on the way. Altman foul tips it back. He was really trying to pull that ball into the wind.
- 49:02Altman with nine homers and 47 runs about it and hitting 229.
- 49:08George has been hobbled with injuries. Here's the pitch he was going to bunt.
- 49:13Going outside. Two balls and a strike.
- 49:23Left hand hitter digging in. George AltmanThe pitch by Simmons. A bouncing ball fouled on the first base line.
- 49:34Anything happening up there, Roy, while we have a second?
- 49:43So now, Bunningham on the top of their batting order coming up for the Phillies in the third.
- 49:47They have a packed house there, too.
- 49:50George Altman to batter. Two balls, two strikes.
- 49:54We're in the third.
- 49:58Kurt Simmons gets ready.
- 50:05Into the windup. Here's the pitch on the way.
- 50:08A fast ball a little bit low and inside.
- 50:11Three balls and two strikes on the left hand hitter.
- 50:14George Altman. Top half of the third inning.
- 50:21Now the wind the pitch. A tamp foul again after a fast ball.
- 50:28Three balls, two strikes. Top of the third inning.
- 50:33Hope you're enjoying a cold bottle of Bush Bavarian beer right about now.
- 50:41Three balls, two strikes.
- 50:48The wind hears the pitch on the way.
- 50:51Folded back trying to go to left field with it.
- 50:54And the count is three and two.
- 50:58The atmosphere is so great. At least that we open our radio booth door.
- 51:02The transistors, which are around the ballpark, are giving us quite a feedback.
- 51:06I don't know how we can cure it because they want to hear the ballgame, too.
- 51:10Three-two pitch now. Swung on and popped foul back.
- 51:13And the count, three balls, two strikes. That's easy.
- 51:16We'll just keep the door closed.
- 51:22Full count of three and two. Left-handed batter up there.
- 51:28Kurt Simmons is set. Here's the pitch on the way.
- 51:33Curve outside. He walked him. So Altman leads off with a walk.
- 51:37That enables the Mets to use their pitcher to sacrifice him along.
- 51:43Galen Sisco coming up.
- 51:50Sisco's at six out of 54 as a hitter.
- 51:54He's hit one double. He's driven in four runs.
- 52:00Right-hand batter digging in.
- 52:05Now the sign.
- 52:08And from the belt, the pitch is on the way.
- 52:10Yay, McCarver drops the ballThe pitch is high.
- 52:13One ball, no strike.
- 52:15George Altman, a pretty good runner at first base.
- 52:18White was charging in. Maxwell was coming over to cover.
- 52:22One ball, no strikes.
- 52:28Now the signal given.
- 52:31Ready from the beltThe pitch on the way. He's going to bunt.
- 52:34Strike call.
- 52:36A fastball over the outside corner, knee-high.
- 52:39One ball, one strike.
- 52:45Kenny Boyer playing a shallow third base.
- 52:48Bright sunshine here.
- 52:51Now the pitch on the way.
- 52:53He bunts, and it's a good one.
- 52:55Simmons has only one play, and that's the first base where Maxville covered.
- 53:01It's a sacrifice.
- 53:04Simmons fumbled the ball, but the old pro that he is, he didn't panic.
- 53:07He knew the pitcher was running down the line, that he had plenty of time,
- 53:10and he made sure that he picked it up on the second grab and threw him out.
- 53:15So they have the tying run and scoring position with only one out,
- 53:19and they have Bobby Klaus and Roy McMillan coming up with a chance to drive in the run.
- 53:29We're in the third. Right-hand hitter digging in.
- 53:39There's Simmons getting set from the belt to the pitch.
- 53:47It's a curve at the knees, a beauty, a strike call.
- 53:51One strike and no balls.
- 53:57Wide at first, wide at the back.
- 53:59Maxville over near second.
- 54:02They play Klaus to pull.
- 54:04Now Simmons backs off the rubber.
- 54:07One strike and no balls.
- 54:10There's the pitch. Low fast ball.
- 54:13Simmons, 15 years ago, was on the Philadelphia-Philly WizKid team that won the pennant.
- 54:24He helped them win the pennant with 17 victories, but he didn't get to play in the World Series
- 54:28because he was in the service when the series was being played.
- 54:31Here's a strike call to Klaus. Two strikes and a ball.
- 54:38Simmons pitching the most important game of the year.
- 54:46Two strikes and a ball.
- 54:48Right-handed batter digging in.
- 54:50We're in the thirdThe wind blows towards right field and strongly.
- 54:56Simmons pitches the bell on the way.
- 54:59Fast ball is outside and that evens it up.
- 55:02Two balls, two strikes. Bobby Klaus, the hitter.
- 55:08He homered yesterday, his fourth of the year.
- 55:12Had a brother named Billy who was in the major leagues.
- 55:15The Red Sox, and Philly's another club.
- 55:18Two balls, two strikes. Here's the pitch on the way.
- 55:21A bouncing ball to Boyer. He should throw him out.
- 55:23There's a long throw to first.
- 55:25He saves! He rolls it. Bill White came off the bat.
- 55:32The throw was a little high. White thought he had his toe on the bag.
- 55:35Altman held second. See how they're going to call that an infield hit for Klaus.
- 55:41That'll bring up Roy McMillan who can handle that bat.
- 55:46White thought that his toe had stayed on the bag and he argues about it.
- 55:53An infield hit. Puts runners at first and second with one out.
- 55:59The slow hopper to Kenny Boyer. Roy McMillan up there.
- 56:05He can handle that bat. He can hit on the opposite field.
- 56:11Okay, Roy, quickly. Anything happen?
- 56:14In the top of the third inning here, the Fills have men in scoring position.
- 56:18At second and third, Johnny Callison will be the batter.
- 56:21There's one out and the Red Bull pen is busy with Joe Nuxall, a left hander.
- 56:26Here's a hot smash. Hit to Boyer. Looks like a double play.
- 56:28To Maxwell, oneThe first. Two! McMillan hit into a double play.
- 56:34From Boyer to Maxwell to Bill White.
- 56:37That ball was hit like a bullet on one hop right at Kenny Boyer
- 56:41who executed the double play with a pivot to Maxwell.
- 56:47White ending it at first base. So it is one hit, no runs.
- 56:51No errors and one left.
- 56:53We go into the bottom half of the third inning. Cardinals one, Mets nothing.
- 57:02While we go into the bottom half of the third inning,
- 57:07Kurt Flood who lined out to center his first time at bat will be the hitter.
- 57:15Cardinals leading one to nothing.
- 57:21Now the signal given.
- 57:25Gale and Siscoe is ready.
- 57:29There's the wind up and out of fifth.
- 57:32It's a strike, a good fast ball over the outside corner.
- 57:36One strike, no ball.
- 57:38Capacity crowd on hand. Looks capacity.
- 57:43One strike, no ball.
- 57:46Kurt Flood leading off against Gale and SiscoeThe pitch is on the way.
- 57:50It's a high curve ball.
- 57:53One ball, one strike.
- 57:59Kurt Flood the hitter.
- 58:01Siscoe gets set.
- 58:07Now ready.
- 58:09Into the wind up.
- 58:11Here's the pitch. Way outside, quickly to Cincinnati. Roy, anything happen?
- 58:16Yes, Harry, the Fills have taken the lead.
- 58:20As Russ Cunningham ripped the single scoring two men.
- 58:23What's the score, right?
- 58:25Two to nothing now.
- 58:26It's the top of the third, one out, the Fills still batting.
- 58:28Two to nothing in favor of the Phillies and they're still batting in the third.
- 58:35Here now is Flood, two balls, one strike. Oh, what excitement here.
- 58:41Now the wind up by Siscoe. Here's the pitch on the way.
- 58:45And it's low and inside, ball three.
- 58:48Three balls and a strike.
- 58:54Nuxol is now relieving Sartorius.
- 59:00In the third inning at Cincinnati, three balls, one strike. Here's the pitch.
- 59:06Ball four, he walked him.
- 59:12So we have a runner at first base with nobody out and here's Lou Brock.
- 59:17Brock single in the first inning.
- 59:22And with some dazzling base running, wound up at second when Hickman just momentarily juggled the ball.
- 59:31The third baseman, Smith, comes in shallow expecting a bun.
- 59:36Left-handed batter waits.
- 59:41There's the stretch, the hesitation.
- 59:44And the pitch. And a pitch out, nothing happened.
- 59:47One ball, no strikes.
- 59:50Lou Brock, the batter.
- 59:54Why, everybody in this ballpark must have a transistor radio.
- 59:59One ball, no strike.
- 1:00:02Now ready, Brock a lead, here's the stretch.
- 1:00:06What a lead, rather. Here's a pitch to Brock and he foul-tips.
- 1:00:09One ball and one strike.
- 1:00:19The third baseman, Charlie Smith, plays in on the edge of the grass.
- 1:00:24Brock gave no indication of bunning.
- 1:00:26Flood is the runner at first with nobody out.
- 1:00:30One ball, one strike.
- 1:00:32Now the signal given.
- 1:00:35Ready.
- 1:00:42Now the stretch, the hesitation. Flood a long lead.
- 1:00:45The pitch to Brock, here it is.
- 1:00:48Strike two called over the inside corner.
- 1:00:51Two strikes and a ball.
- 1:00:55And Brock didn't like that. One Eddie Vargo dust off the plate.
- 1:01:03Now all set to goThe third baseman drops back, another step this time.
- 1:01:11Left-hand hitter, the wind blowing towards the right.
- 1:01:17Brock has power in that direction. Here's the stretch.
- 1:01:21And a pitch way outside. That evens it up two balls, two strikes.
- 1:01:27A runner at first. We're in the third.
- 1:01:33Luke Brock waiting.
- 1:01:37The breeze blows strongly towards right.
- 1:01:44Galen Sisco takes his time into the stretch from the belt and the pitch.
- 1:01:52Outside ball three. And it's a full count of three and two and flood will be going up.
- 1:01:58Nobody out. Luke Brock the hitter. Three balls, two strikes.
- 1:02:02Cardinals leading one to nothing in the bottom of the third.
- 1:02:05Phillies leading two to nothing in the top of the third.
- 1:02:09Over Cincinnati. Three balls, two strikes. Left-hand batter waiting.
- 1:02:16Signal given.
- 1:02:22Now the stretch by Galen Sisco from the belt.
- 1:02:27The pitch is on the way. Here it is. Swung and foul tipped as the runner was breaking.
- 1:02:32Quickly Roy, what's happened?
- 1:02:35Runners at first and third. One out, thick power is the batter with a 2-2 count.
- 1:02:40Phillies lead two nothing.
- 1:02:43Three balls, two strikes.
- 1:02:46A ball game in the third. One to nothing in favor of the Cardinals.
- 1:02:53Now to signal given.
- 1:02:58Galen Sisco on the hill. Flood will be going with the pitch.
- 1:03:02The 3-2. Here it is, there he goes.
- 1:03:05A hot shot to the second base. Don't play a second.
- 1:03:08He fumbles the ball. Everybody is safe.
- 1:03:13Bobby Klaus fumbled the ball for an error.
- 1:03:16And having the runner going on three and two, he was trying to rush it thinking he could still get the man at second.
- 1:03:23And he dropped the ball.
- 1:03:25And when you drop the ball with Brock running, forget about it.
- 1:03:28So everybody is safe. Runners at first and second, nobody out.
- 1:03:32Here's Bill White.
- 1:03:36White lined out to short his first time up.
- 1:03:40Left-hand hitter waiting.
- 1:03:43Bill Wakefield has started a warm-up in the bullpen for the Mets.
- 1:03:48Listen to this crowd.
- 1:03:50Boy, there's frenzied excitement here.
- 1:03:53Here's the stretch.
- 1:03:55And the pitch to White. It's inside a slider. Ball on.
- 1:03:59Oh, Bill can get a hold of one the way that wind is blowing.
- 1:04:03One ball, no strikes.
- 1:04:05They want to see the baseball while they look at it. Back to Cincinnati and Roy May.
- 1:04:09There are two out now with runners at first and second. Tony Taylor just ripped the single up the middle.
- 1:04:14They now lead three to nothing.
- 1:04:17Good reporting, Roy. Good reporting.
- 1:04:24As long as you can wrench for the Phillies, you're the greatest.
- 1:04:28Three to nothing in favor of the Phillies, and they're still batting in the third at Cincinnati.
- 1:04:34One ball, no strikes on Bill White.
- 1:04:39And now, Galen Siscoe is ready from the belt.
- 1:04:45The pitch, it's outside.
- 1:04:48Ball two, and Wakefield is down to the bullpen.
- 1:04:52Harry Bill White, in checking the records, has had great success against Siscoe.
- 1:04:56He hit a home run off him earlier in the season, and got a two-base hit in an earlier game.
- 1:05:02Two for five against him going to this one.
- 1:05:04He hit his first time up a line drive to the shortstop.
- 1:05:08All right, two balls, no strikes.
- 1:05:11Runners at first and second, the stretch.
- 1:05:14The pitch, a bouncing ball to the first baseman, Cranepool. He's going to throw to second.
- 1:05:19In time, runners are at first and third.
- 1:05:21Nice play by Ed Cranepool.
- 1:05:25So White forces brought Cranepool to McMillan.
- 1:05:30Here's Boyer now with runners at first and third, only one out.
- 1:05:33Oh, we've got to win this ball game.
- 1:05:36Boyer walked his first time up.
- 1:05:42There, McMillan the shortstop talking to Galen Siscoe.
- 1:05:46They're going to play back for the double play.
- 1:05:50Boyer might try to poke that ball to the opposite field against that defense,
- 1:05:55with Crouse practically standing on second base.
- 1:06:05Right-handed Vanaweets.
- 1:06:13Kenny Boyer waiting.
- 1:06:15Galen Siscoe gets set, the infield back hoping for a double play.
- 1:06:22Oh, I'd like to see him slice one in the right field.
- 1:06:25There's the stretch and the pitch on the way.
- 1:06:30A double play ball to Crouse.
- 1:06:32Over to McMillan for one. Over to first base for two.
- 1:06:35From Crouse to McMillan to Cranepool.
- 1:06:39So it is no runs, no hits, one air, one left.
- 1:06:42At the end of three here, the Cardinals won, the Mets nothing.
- 1:06:46While we go into the top of the fourth now, here comes a three up for Philadelphia.
- 1:06:51Everybody sees it now.
- 1:06:54Here's the pitch to Christopher in a slow curve, strike is gone.
- 1:06:58One strike and no ball.
- 1:07:01Joe Christopher who beat out a bunny his first time up.
- 1:07:04Christopher hitting three-oh-one.
- 1:07:06Sixteen homers in 76 runs batted in.
- 1:07:11Simmons gets set.
- 1:07:13The wind up now, the pitch on the way.
- 1:07:15There's a high pop fly.
- 1:07:17Short right field.
- 1:07:18Shannon waiting for the ball.
- 1:07:21He's got it one up.
- 1:07:23Christopher fly to Shannon in right.
- 1:07:26One away and here's Jim Hickman, a power hitter.
- 1:07:30Eleven homers in 57 RBIs batting 259.
- 1:07:35He fly it out to right his first time up.
- 1:07:41A balloon comes blowing onto the field.
- 1:07:47Well, that's how high it will all be if the Reds lose and the Cardinals win today.
- 1:07:59There's the pitch on the way to Hata Hickman.
- 1:08:02It's a little bit inside.
- 1:08:04One ball and no strikes.
- 1:08:11The football Cardinals lead 14-10 at the half.
- 1:08:15Now the pitch slow curve of beauty.
- 1:08:18That evens it up for the ball and no strike.
- 1:08:21One out, nobody on base.
- 1:08:23One to nothing in favor of the Cardinals.
- 1:08:26It would feel a lot better if we could make a few more runs.
- 1:08:29One ball, one strike, the pitch on the way.
- 1:08:32It's a high fastball, ball two.
- 1:08:34Two balls and a strike.
- 1:08:37Looking ahead to the Cardinal fourth, it will be Grote leading off.
- 1:08:41We had a great chance in the third, but White and Boyer were retired.
- 1:08:45Within field, ground ball.
- 1:08:47Two balls, one strike, the pitch.
- 1:08:50There's a fly ball left field, Brock coming over.
- 1:08:53He's there now.
- 1:08:54He makes the cut.
- 1:08:57Hickman fly to Brock and left.
- 1:09:02And here's Charlie Smith, popped up his first time up, right-handed batter.
- 1:09:07We're in the top of the fourth, let's pause quickly for a cold bottle of Bush Bavarian beer.
- 1:09:11This is the Cardinals baseball network.
- 1:09:14KMWX and KMWX FM, St. Louis.
- 1:09:17Only DX gasoline contains the element boron.
- 1:09:20Fill up with...
- 1:09:21The X-suit for boron, drive a car that's alive.
- 1:09:28This is Harry Carey with Jerry Gross in St. Louis, and now to Cincinnati and Roy May.
- 1:09:33Jim Bunning just up the field, down an order in the third, so at the end of three, it's Phillies three, Reds nothing.
- 1:09:40All right, here's a strike call now to Charlie Smith.
- 1:09:44So it's three to nothing at the end of three, Philadelphia over Cincinnati.
- 1:09:49Charlie Smith is the batter.
- 1:09:53One ball, one strike.
- 1:09:55The Y now, the pitch by Simmons, and here it is, let off pitch outside.
- 1:10:00Two balls in the strike.
- 1:10:03Top of the fourth.
- 1:10:06Cardinals leading one to nothing.
- 1:10:09Boy, these Mets give us a battle.
- 1:10:13Now the Y and the pitch, here it is.
- 1:10:16He swung and he missed, strike two, and the count is evened up two balls, two strikes.
- 1:10:24Billy McCool is relieved for the Reds now in the fourth.
- 1:10:28So, the Phillies lead three to nothing with McCool relieving Nuxo, who probably went out for a pinch hitter.
- 1:10:36Two balls, two strikes, the pitch on the way.
- 1:10:39There's a little pop foul out of play into the stand.
- 1:10:42And the count evened up two balls, two strikes.
- 1:10:45Two men out.
- 1:10:48Ball game in the fourth.
- 1:10:53Charlie Smith the batter.
- 1:10:56Kurt Simmons in another pitching duel with Galen Sisco.
- 1:11:01Two balls, two strikes.
- 1:11:03The wind up the pitch and here it is.
- 1:11:05There's a drive, way back.
- 1:11:07It might be out of here, but stays fair.
- 1:11:09It could be, it's a home run.
- 1:11:16Just down the right field line and this ball game is tied.
- 1:11:20Charlie Smith has just hit his 20th home run of the year.
- 1:11:24The only hope was it might go foul, but it stayed fair.
- 1:11:28Right down the line and the ball game is tied one and one.
- 1:11:33Charlie Smith's 20th home run.
- 1:11:38Boy, that takes the steam out of the crowd.
- 1:11:42Here is Bob Taylor, who was robbed of an extra base hit on a remarkable play by Lou Brock.
- 1:11:48The pitch, low curve, lined in the left of base hit.
- 1:11:51Taylor is on there.
- 1:11:53And that will bring up Ed Craneful, a power left-handed hitter.
- 1:12:04Boy, that chance we missed in the third inning.
- 1:12:07Runners at first and second, nobody out with White and Boyer.
- 1:12:11Boyer hit his ball sharply, but he hit it right up the middle, which is exactly where they were playing him.
- 1:12:18They figure he'll be trying to pull every time, and so they give him all the right field.
- 1:12:22And with the wind blowing towards right today, that's the power field.
- 1:12:26Here's the pitch and it's low.
- 1:12:28One ball, no strike.
- 1:12:30Bob Gibson is limbering up on the bullpen for the card.
- 1:12:35A tight up ball again.
- 1:12:38Now the stretch, the hesitation, the pitch on the way.
- 1:12:41There's a pop fly.
- 1:12:43Everybody chasing it. Who's going to get it?
- 1:12:45Flood is there. He's got it to retire the side.
- 1:12:49Craneful again fly to Flood.
- 1:12:51One run, two hits, no errors, one left.
- 1:12:54We're going to the bottom of the fourth, all tied up.
- 1:12:57The Mets wonThe Cardinals won.
- 1:13:00Particular about taste?
- 1:13:02You bet I'm particular.
- 1:13:04And my Pellmells prove it.
- 1:13:06Particular people
- 1:13:09take particular pleasure
- 1:13:12in the good taste of Pellmell.
- 1:13:16Yes, Pellmell's natural mildness means just one thing.
- 1:13:21Smooth, pleasing flavor.
- 1:13:29The flavors blend it over, under, around and through
- 1:13:34to bring that particular good taste to you.
- 1:13:37So get particular pleasure like particular people do
- 1:13:42in the good taste of Pellmell.
- 1:13:47Be particular.
- 1:13:49Smoke a long cigarette that's long on flavor.
- 1:13:53Buy Pellmell famous cigarettes outstanding.
- 1:13:58And they are mired from the American Tobacco Company.
- 1:14:07Bottom half of the fourth inning.
- 1:14:10We have a moment, let's go to Cincinnati, Roy.
- 1:14:13Top of the fourth, there's nobody on and one out
- 1:14:16with Jim Bunning the batter.
- 1:14:18How's Bunning look?
- 1:14:20Very good, Harry.
- 1:14:27Okay, here's the growth to lead off of the Cardinals
- 1:14:31in the bottom of the fourth, all tied up one and one.
- 1:14:34Oh, we got to get some runs.
- 1:14:37Amazing how this ball club holds this.
- 1:14:43Nine of the games played with the Mets have been decided by one run.
- 1:14:50In two out of the last three games we played with them,
- 1:14:55and they won all three, by the way.
- 1:14:58The pitch to Groat is a strike call.
- 1:15:02They beat us two to one, one to nothing,
- 1:15:04and of course walloped us yesterday 15 to five.
- 1:15:07The last time we beat the Mets was by the score of two to one.
- 1:15:12So they're pitching just buffaloes.
- 1:15:16Here's Groat, one strike, no ball, Cisco's pitch is on the way.
- 1:15:21There's a drive, and the right fielder line fell by about a foot and a half.
- 1:15:26So Groat is in the hole two strikes and nothing.
- 1:15:31Bottom half of the fourth inning, all tied up one and one.
- 1:15:39And Cincinnati batting, or Philadelphia batting in the top of the fourth,
- 1:15:43leads Cincinnati three to nothing.
- 1:15:49Groat the batter, two strikes and nothing.
- 1:15:54We're in the fourth.
- 1:16:01Now the pitch on the way, and it's a curveball high.
- 1:16:04The Phils didn't score on the fourth.
- 1:16:06The Reds are now batting, trailing three to nothing.
- 1:16:10Two strikes and a ball.
- 1:16:14The present pace, the Cincinnati game is ahead of ours,
- 1:16:17just about equal.
- 1:16:19We're in the bottom of the fourth, they're in the bottom of the fourth.
- 1:16:22Two strikes and a ball, the pitch to Groat.
- 1:16:25Into the dirt, low, that evens it up.
- 1:16:27Two balls, two strikes.
- 1:16:31Cardinals have had three hits, the Mets have had four hits.
- 1:16:34The Mets had a home run from Charlie Smith down the right fielder line
- 1:16:37to the Pavilion Roof, his 20th home run of the year.
- 1:16:44He went to the opposite field and took advantage of the wind.
- 1:16:49The little fellows had a great year.
- 1:16:51Anytime he had 20 home runs in this league, he'd done something.
- 1:16:54Here's the pitch to Groat.
- 1:16:55There's a fly ball, deep right center field, that's going to go out of the way to the wall,
- 1:16:58maybe extra bases, Groat's around first, heading for second.
- 1:17:01Here's the throw, he's going to make it easily, a double.
- 1:17:07Groat opens the fourth with a double to right center.
- 1:17:13And now it'll be McCarver, who'll double the left in the second, followed by Shannon.
- 1:17:20That's the lead run at second base, nobody out.
- 1:17:43McCarver takes a look at Vern Benson coaching third.
- 1:17:50Now the stretch.
- 1:17:54The pitch is on the way.
- 1:17:56A bouncing ball back to the mound, he holds the runner at second, throws to first, and McCarver's out.
- 1:18:02Boy, that hurt, he didn't pull the ball at all.
- 1:18:05Just pushed his bat at it, hit it right back to the pitcher.
- 1:18:11One situation you've got to try to pull, because a ground ball to the first base side would put Groat at third with one out.
- 1:18:18As it is now, takes a base hit to score.
- 1:18:21Here's Shannon, who drove in our first run with a single to left.
- 1:18:25Groat in scoring position with one out.
- 1:18:32Now the stretch, the hesitation.
- 1:18:34The pitch is on the way.
- 1:18:36It's a fastball low, ball one.
- 1:18:39Down Maxville will be next.
- 1:18:41One and one, we're in the bottom of the fourth.
- 1:18:44The Mets have won the first two games trying to make it a clean sweep.
- 1:18:48The Phillies are leading the Reds, three to nothing in the bottom of the fourth at Cincinnati.
- 1:18:53One ball, no strikes.
- 1:18:55The pitch is on the way.
- 1:18:57He had a good cut on that one and he fouled it off.
- 1:19:00One ball, one strike.
- 1:19:03Anything happening, Roy? Quickly.
- 1:19:06Shannon one out here for the Reds in the bottom of the fourth inning, and Frank Groat is in the last place.
- 1:19:12All right, one ball, one strike here.
- 1:19:16Shannon the batter.
- 1:19:18Score tied, one-one.
- 1:19:21Galen Siscoe rubs up the baseball.
- 1:19:32Now we're ready.
- 1:19:41The outfield bunches Shannon towards center.
- 1:19:48Siscoe gets set.
- 1:19:50Groat a long lead at second base.
- 1:19:57Groat a long lead at second base.
- 1:20:01And the one-one pitch is on the way.
- 1:20:04And here it is.
- 1:20:06He had a cut and he fouled it back.
- 1:20:08Boy, he had a good swing of the curveball that time.
- 1:20:11He returned the ball to the pitcher and almost hit him in the face.
- 1:20:14He wasn't looking.
- 1:20:15Two strikes and a ball.
- 1:20:18In Cincinnati, is Robinson still up, Roy?
- 1:20:22Yes, he is, Harry, with a one-one count.
- 1:20:25A runner at first, one out.
- 1:20:27Two strikes and a ball here, with one out and a runner at second, and Mike Shannon the batter.
- 1:20:32Down Maxville would be next.
- 1:20:36One-one tie.
- 1:20:39Charlie Smith, who hit a home run yesterday and another one today.
- 1:20:43Now the stretch from the belt and the pitch to Shannon on the way.
- 1:20:50A pop fly, and the short center field is going to be caught.
- 1:20:53Hickman is there.
- 1:20:55He's got it to a win.
- 1:20:57Shannon didn't have much of a swing of that one.
- 1:20:59So there's two out here on the fourth.
- 1:21:02And here's Down Maxville.
- 1:21:05He popped up his first time.
- 1:21:07Right-handed hitter up there, playing in place of the injured Javier.
- 1:21:21Maxville bounding 222, right-handed hitter.
- 1:21:27Galen Susco takes his time, rubs up the baseball.
- 1:21:37Now ready from the belt.
- 1:21:42There's the pitch to Maxville.
- 1:21:44It's a high inside curve ball, ball one.
- 1:21:47One ball, no strikes.
- 1:21:49Maxville, not a power hitter.
- 1:21:52No homers and two RBIs bounding 222.
- 1:21:58Chokes up on the bat about an inch from the end.
- 1:22:03One ball, no strikes.
- 1:22:06The stretch and the pitch to Maxville.
- 1:22:09Oop, he backs off the rubber.
- 1:22:11Galen Susco, very deliberate.
- 1:22:16After this pitch, we'll flash back to Cincinnati.
- 1:22:20There's the stretch and the pitch to Maxville.
- 1:22:24Here it is.
- 1:22:25Wind drive, base hit.
- 1:22:27Here's the man going to try to score.
- 1:22:29Here's Jim Hickman up with the ball.
- 1:22:31And it scores.
- 1:22:32The Cardinals lead 2-1.
- 1:22:34Maxville singles the center, scoring group.
- 1:22:37And the Cardinals lead 2-1.
- 1:22:41Now let's see if anything has happened in Cincinnati.
- 1:22:45Two out here now as Frank Robinson struck out,
- 1:22:48but the ball got away from the catcher,
- 1:22:50and Finson is on second base now.
- 1:22:52The batter is Darren Johnson.
- 1:22:54Two out, Philly 3, Reds nothing in the bottom of the fourth.
- 1:22:58All right, here's Kurt Simmons now.
- 1:23:00Down, Maxville drives in his third run of the year,
- 1:23:03and he ripped that ball hard up the middle.
- 1:23:06And Simmons steps up there, 2-1 in favor of the Cardinals.
- 1:23:12Bill Wakefield arms up again, far in the midst.
- 1:23:15Cisco getting ready.
- 1:23:20Now the stretch by Cisco and the pitch to Simmons.
- 1:23:23And here it is.
- 1:23:25Outside, ball one.
- 1:23:27One ball to no strikes.
- 1:23:35Cisco, broad-shouldered right-hander, who has won six, lost 18.
- 1:23:392-1, the Cardinals lead, we're in the bottom of the fourth.
- 1:23:44Cranepool doesn't hold the runner on.
- 1:23:46He plays back off the bag at first.
- 1:23:48The stretch, the pitch now to Simmons.
- 1:23:51Here it is, outside, ball two.
- 1:23:54Two balls or nothing.
- 1:23:59Kurt Flood would be next.
- 1:24:01Redbirds trying to build up a cushion,
- 1:24:04which is hard to do against this ball club.
- 1:24:08Two balls, no strikes.
- 1:24:10The Phillies beat the Mets 15 out of 18 this year,
- 1:24:13and we wonder how in the world they did it.
- 1:24:17Two balls, no strikes.
- 1:24:21Now the stretch from the belt, the pitch to Simmons.
- 1:24:25It's ball three low.
- 1:24:27Three balls and no strikes.
- 1:24:30Two out, a runner at first.
- 1:24:32The Mets built it in, the tie-breaking run.
- 1:24:40The football Cardinals are leading in Washington, 21-10.
- 1:24:46Three balls, no strikes.
- 1:24:48Two out, runner at first base.
- 1:24:55Flood would be next.
- 1:24:56Gale and Cisco get set.
- 1:24:58Now from the belt, the pitch on the way.
- 1:25:00Here it is, ball four.
- 1:25:02He walked in.
- 1:25:04So we have runners at first and second with two out,
- 1:25:07and Kurt Flood coming up.
- 1:25:10Let's switch now to Cincinnati and see if the Reds are still
- 1:25:13batting in their fourth.
- 1:25:15The situation was the same here.
- 1:25:17A man on second base, two out, and a one-two count on Darren Johnson.
- 1:25:22All right, right.
- 1:25:24Here's Kurt Flood.
- 1:25:26Simmons at first, Maxville at second.
- 1:25:29Ball game in the fourth.
- 1:25:34The Reds did not score in the fourth.
- 1:25:39Here's a stretch now on the pitch to Flood.
- 1:25:43It's inside, ball one.
- 1:25:45One ball, no strikes.
- 1:25:48Kurt Flood, who lined out his first time, walked his second time,
- 1:25:52Brock would be next.
- 1:25:56Right-handed batter waiting.
- 1:25:58Two to one in favor of the Cardinals.
- 1:26:07Here's the stretch and the pitch on the way.
- 1:26:12He swung and he missed.
- 1:26:14He was going for the pump that time.
- 1:26:20What's that, Roy?
- 1:26:35Here's the stretch.
- 1:26:36One ball, one strike.
- 1:26:38A bouncing ball just ought to end the inning.
- 1:26:40McMillan's got it, flips to second.
- 1:26:42Flood for Simmons.
- 1:26:45From McMillan to Clouse.
- 1:26:47One run, two hits.
- 1:26:50No errors, two left.
- 1:26:52At the end of four, the Cardinals two, the Mets one.
- 1:26:56Top of the fifth, the Cardinals lead two to one.
- 1:27:01George Almon will lead it off.
- 1:27:07Anything going on in Cincinnati, Roy?
- 1:27:10Yes, Derry.
- 1:27:11In the top of the fifth inning,
- 1:27:13Richie Allen has just homered against the center field wall.
- 1:27:17They now lead four to nothing.
- 1:27:19Nobody out, nobody on.
- 1:27:21All right, wonderful.
- 1:27:23Richie Allen has just homered, and the Reds and the Phillies lead
- 1:27:26four to nothing in Cincinnati.
- 1:27:29Here's George Almon up there.
- 1:27:31One strike and no ball.
- 1:27:34Now the wind.
- 1:27:35Here's the pitch on the way.
- 1:27:37And he started to swing and he held up.
- 1:27:39One ball, one strike.
- 1:27:41They're in the fifth at Cincinnati with the Phillies leading
- 1:27:44four to nothing.
- 1:27:48Left-handed batter Altman waits.
- 1:27:50He walked his first time at bat.
- 1:27:52Here's the wind up now, the pitch by Simmons.
- 1:27:54And it gets away from McCarver.
- 1:27:56Two balls and a strike.
- 1:27:58A little bit inside.
- 1:28:03And by half a Bush-Bavarian beer,
- 1:28:05we sincerely hope that you've enjoyed another season
- 1:28:08of Cardinal Baseball Broadcast.
- 1:28:13Two balls, one strike.
- 1:28:15The pitch is on the way.
- 1:28:17Fouled out of play and the count is in.
- 1:28:19Two balls, two strikes.
- 1:28:22Altman the batter.
- 1:28:24We're in the fifth, and they're in the fifth up there.
- 1:28:27We lead two to one.
- 1:28:29The Reds trail four to nothing.
- 1:28:33Two balls, two strikes.
- 1:28:39Now the wind up and here's the pitch on the way.
- 1:28:42Line drive, base hit for all.
- 1:28:45Altman singles to center.
- 1:28:48And so once again, the tying one is on base with nobody out,
- 1:28:56enabling their pitcher, Galen Sisco, to come up and sacrifice.
- 1:29:02Altman single to center.
- 1:29:07Football score, Harry.
- 1:29:08At the end of three quarters, the football Cardinals lead 21 to 10
- 1:29:12over the Redskins.
- 1:29:14Okey-doke, here's Sisco.
- 1:29:18And the stretch, the pitch on the way.
- 1:29:20He bounce and it's a good one.
- 1:29:22Boy, they can lay that ball down.
- 1:29:23There's a throw to first to Maxville.
- 1:29:26They just don't fail on that sacrifice, do they?
- 1:29:32And the play goes from Boyer to Maxville as Sisco sacrifices,
- 1:29:35and here is Bobby Klaus, right-handed batter.
- 1:29:43The ball game in the fifth.
- 1:29:46The Redbirds in a real struggle with the Mets, but leading two to one.
- 1:29:52Mets have the tying run at second base, one out.
- 1:29:59The stretch now, the pitch on the way.
- 1:30:02He swung and he missed the fastball strike one.
- 1:30:06One strike and no ball.
- 1:30:08One out.
- 1:30:16Groat edging a little bit towards Altman.
- 1:30:20He has a long lead.
- 1:30:22Simmons pitch.
- 1:30:23Strike two hit the corner.
- 1:30:26A fastball to nip the outside corner.
- 1:30:30So it's two strikes and no ball.
- 1:30:32One out.
- 1:30:33And a man in scoring position here in the fifth.
- 1:30:41The delivery on the way.
- 1:30:43There's a high pop fly.
- 1:30:45That should be caught by somebody.
- 1:30:47Maxville is there.
- 1:30:48He's under the ball.
- 1:30:49Oh, he lets it drop.
- 1:30:51And here's a runner on third holding up.
- 1:30:54Klaus winds up at second base.
- 1:30:56Shannon could have caught the ball, but Maxville had called for it,
- 1:31:01and the wind grabbed it.
- 1:31:04Come on, Mike, take those kinds.
- 1:31:09Okay, an easy pop fly.
- 1:31:11Now they have the leading run at second, the tying run at third.
- 1:31:16Maxville had called for the ball, so Shannon let him have it.
- 1:31:20And he didn't play the wind at all.
- 1:31:24And it goes for a double.
- 1:31:27And now McMillan, the tough man up there with runners at second and third,
- 1:31:31and the infield has to come in.
- 1:31:43McMillan hit the ball sharply in the third, but into a double play.
- 1:31:48Right-hand batter waits.
- 1:31:50Simmons in a jam.
- 1:31:54Ready to wind up.
- 1:31:55Here's the pitch on the way.
- 1:31:57It's outside.
- 1:31:59Joe Christopher would be next.
- 1:32:01The Cardinals in trouble.
- 1:32:03Bob Gibson down on the bullpen.
- 1:32:05We lead 2-1, but a pop fly was just permitted to drop,
- 1:32:09as Dow Maxville miscalculated the wind.
- 1:32:14One ball, no strike.
- 1:32:15The pitch on the way.
- 1:32:17And it's outside, ball two.
- 1:32:21Two balls and nothing.
- 1:32:23Shannon in right, Flood in center, Brock in left.
- 1:32:27What really hurt about that one was that Shannon could have caught the ball,
- 1:32:31but Maxville kept yelling for it, so Shannon had to back away from him,
- 1:32:35fearing a collision whereby the ball might drop.
- 1:32:40And so by retreating, he wasn't able to lunge for the ball at Maxville.
- 1:32:47Completely misjudging it, allowed it to drop.
- 1:32:51Two balls, no strike.
- 1:32:56In field, in.
- 1:32:58Can Simmons pitch out of this?
- 1:33:00He's behind the hit or two balls and nothing.
- 1:33:04Now he's ready.
- 1:33:11Into the wind if he goes, and here's the pitch on the way.
- 1:33:15Line drive is going to score both, and the Mets have taken the lead.
- 1:33:19Into the corner, McMillan's on his way to second base.
- 1:33:24A double to left.
- 1:33:26And the Cardinals trail three to two.
- 1:33:36McMillan, a tough hitter in the clutch.
- 1:33:40And now both of the two of the teams right now, if everything would end the way it is now,
- 1:33:47there'd be a triple tie starting tomorrow in Philadelphia, with the Reds playing the Phillies.
- 1:33:59Boy, that high pop line, that really hurt.
- 1:34:04Changed the whole inning around.
- 1:34:09And now Joe Christopher comes up.
- 1:34:12Gibson is down on the bullpen.
- 1:34:17And Gibson in relief, you don't know.
- 1:34:21Here comes the manager, Johnny Keen, out.
- 1:34:25And Gibson's going to be brought in here.
- 1:34:31Simmons has been tailed.
- 1:34:39Boy, that's a shame on that pop fly.
- 1:34:44If Maxville had just stayed away from it, completely why it would have been all right.
- 1:34:50But it started out like a routine pop fly behind first, and he kept yelling for it
- 1:34:57and running out for it, so Shannon stopped coming in.
- 1:35:03And then he didn't come within five feet of it.
- 1:35:07Simmons is going to stay in there.
- 1:35:10Just a little chat.
- 1:35:15One out.
- 1:35:18Three to two in favor of the Mets.
- 1:35:25Boy, are we ever going to beat these fellows.
- 1:35:33All right, now Johnny just wanted to give Gibson a little more time to get ready.
- 1:35:38Now he's coming out, which means that Simmons will have to go out,
- 1:35:43because he's come out twice in one inning.
- 1:35:45All right, let's go now to Roy May in Cincinnati and see what the picture is there.
- 1:35:50We're going into the bottom of the fifth inning now with the Phillies out in the front,
- 1:35:54forward and nothing, and in the top of the inning, as you know,
- 1:35:57Richie Allen hits that long home run to center field, so that's the situation.
- 1:36:00Reds coming in the back, in the bottom of the fifth, Phillies leading forward and nothing.
- 1:36:05And the Reds are trailing forward and nothing, as you heard, and we're losing three to two here.
- 1:36:16And Bob Gibson comes in in relief.
- 1:36:23Let's see, for Gibson, this is only the fourth, the fifth time that he's relieved.
- 1:36:37He comes into the ballgame trailing three to two.
- 1:36:40Kurt Simmons has been knocked out here.
- 1:36:48Two doubles and a single, but one double with just a high pop fly behind first base.
- 1:36:59But young Dowd Knoxville misjudged, let the wind carry it away from him,
- 1:37:04and a drop behind him.
- 1:37:06As he was calling, he had it.
- 1:37:09So Gibson now comes in. He lost one to nothing Friday night.
- 1:37:25What makes this particularly tough for you, for us, is that the Reds are losing,
- 1:37:35which is the combination you need, a Cardinal victory and a Red defeat would clinch the pendant for the Cardinals.
- 1:37:44A Met victory and a Philadelphia victory would throw the three teams into a tie,
- 1:37:51which would make all-time baseball history a three-way tie, necessitating a round-robin playoff.
- 1:38:01All right, Joe Christopher will be the batter. One out.
- 1:38:05A man in scoring position, the Mets lead three to two.
- 1:38:16The stretch, the hesitation, and the pitch to Christopher.
- 1:38:20Strike call, the good fastball.
- 1:38:24One strike and no balls.
- 1:38:27Christopher beat out a bun on the first. He's hitting 3-0-1. He's flying out to right on the fourth.
- 1:38:33Jim Hickman, another right-handed batter, will be next. Here's the stretch.
- 1:38:37And from the belt, the pitch on the way. A high fly ball to right.
- 1:38:41Shannon is there waiting for it. He's got it.
- 1:38:47Two gone. Here's Hickman, a right-handed batter.
- 1:38:52Simmons cannot be the winner in this game.
- 1:38:55He could be the loser if the Cardinals never catch up.
- 1:38:58He would be the loser if the Cardinals don't catch up.
- 1:39:01We've got a long way to go.
- 1:39:05Now Hickman comes out, nothing out of two in this ballgame.
- 1:39:09He had nothing out of four against Gibson Friday night.
- 1:39:13Man's in scoring position, one out.
- 1:39:18Now the stretch, the hesitation, and the pitch on the way.
- 1:39:22It's a fast ball high and inside ball one.
- 1:39:25One ball, no strikes.
- 1:39:29In the fifth.
- 1:39:39The delivery by Gibson on the way.
- 1:39:41A tap right in front of the plate. McCarver's got it. Throws the first in time.
- 1:39:48And so the inning is over and Gibson did the job.
- 1:39:51There's two runs score, however, on three hits.
- 1:39:54No errors in one left.
- 1:39:56And now we go on to the bottom of the fifth.
- 1:40:00The Mets three, the Cardinals two.
- 1:40:04We like to talk to you ladies now about some very good reasons
- 1:40:06for using cotton-made instant spray starch on ironing day.
- 1:40:11First of all, cotton-made is a work saver.
- 1:40:14A few light sprays over hard-to-iron areas is all you need to make ironing smoother.
- 1:40:19Those stay neat longer.
- 1:40:21Use cotton-made on cuffs and collars especially.
- 1:40:24It'll keep them looking fresh all day.
- 1:40:27Secondly, cotton-made is a money saver.
- 1:40:30You see it comes in a safe plastic refillable bottle.
- 1:40:33You save a great deal over the cost of aerosol sprays.
- 1:40:37You don't throw the spray bottle away, you refill it from the economy-sized quart.
- 1:40:42And because cotton-made has a window spray type plunger,
- 1:40:46you get just the amount of spray that you need.
- 1:40:49You don't have all that pressure.
- 1:40:51You never use too much.
- 1:40:53And thirdly, get a bottle of cotton-made next shopping day.
- 1:40:57Be sure to look for the refill when your pint sprayer gets low.
- 1:41:01Cotton-made, a product of Anheuser-Busch, Incorporated.
- 1:41:05Before we move now to the last half of the fifth inning,
- 1:41:08with the Redbirds down three to two, we'll take time for station identification.
- 1:41:12This is the Cardinals Baseball Network.
- 1:41:15Here it works, and here it works up, I'm St. Louis.
- 1:41:18On the DX, gasoline contains the element boron.
- 1:41:22Fill up with...
- 1:41:23DX Super Boron!
- 1:41:26Drive a car that's alive!
- 1:41:30This is Harry Carrey with Jerry Groves.
- 1:41:33A beautiful Boer Stadium in St. Louis.
- 1:41:35The Cardinals trailing by a run.
- 1:41:37Three to two, here's Lou Brock to lead it off.
- 1:41:40Galen Sisco has been on the ropes, but he leads.
- 1:41:43Here's the pitch to Brock on the way.
- 1:41:45He had a cut and he missed strike one.
- 1:41:47Quickly, Roy, what's going on in Cincinnati?
- 1:41:50We're at the end of five now, Harry.
- 1:41:52Still, Phillies four reds jumping, and Jim Bunning looks sharp indeed.
- 1:41:55He's got these reds popping up all over the place.
- 1:41:59Let's hope he continues.
- 1:42:02One strike and no balls.
- 1:42:05Brock Bayhitter, here's the pitch on the way.
- 1:42:08Outside, and that evens it up.
- 1:42:10One ball, one strike.
- 1:42:16Come on, Lou, let's pump one out on the grand avenue.
- 1:42:22One ball, one strike.
- 1:42:24Here's the pitch on the way.
- 1:42:26He had a cut and, boy, that's what he had in mind, but he fouled it off.
- 1:42:30Two strikes and a ball.
- 1:42:33It's at the end of five now, four to nothing.
- 1:42:36Philadelphia, Cincinnati.
- 1:42:38I haven't posted that other one yet.
- 1:42:46Two strikes and a ball.
- 1:42:51Lou Brock waits.
- 1:42:54A ball game and a fifth.
- 1:42:58Cisco's pitch is on the way, way outside.
- 1:43:03And the count evens it two balls, two strikes.
- 1:43:07What is it, Roy? I didn't get you.
- 1:43:12Joey J., Joey J., the new pitcher for the Reds in the sixth.
- 1:43:17Four to nothing, Philadelphia.
- 1:43:19Two balls, two strikes. Here's the pitch to Brock.
- 1:43:23Lou, ball three, barely missed the strike zone.
- 1:43:26Harry looked as though Cisco had trouble with his curve ball in the fourth inning,
- 1:43:30but here in the fifth he's had trouble getting the fast ball over,
- 1:43:33which is tailing away from the left-handed hitter.
- 1:43:36Cardinals one run behind.
- 1:43:39Gail and Cisco getting ready.
- 1:43:45There's the windup on the pitch.
- 1:43:47He double pumps and then stops, and now he starts all over again,
- 1:43:50and now he delivers, three and two.
- 1:43:52Ball four, he walked up.
- 1:43:54Maybe this is the inning we can break it open.
- 1:43:57Here's Bill White, who lined out the shot and bounced into a forceful.
- 1:44:02Cardinals have been out hit seven to five, outscored three to two.
- 1:44:06Activity down and the net fullback.
- 1:44:09Oh, there's Casey Stengel is playing it right down to the hilt,
- 1:44:12which is the way the game is supposed to be played.
- 1:44:17Here goes Hot Taylor out to talk to the pitcher.
- 1:44:21Bill White will be the batter.
- 1:44:24None of our left-handed batters have taken advantage of this wind yet.
- 1:44:31Bob, Bill Hunter is the left-hander down there,
- 1:44:37and Bill Whitefield the right-hander.
- 1:44:40Come on, Bill, pump one out on the roof.
- 1:44:44Runner at first, nobody out.
- 1:44:47Lawyer will be next.
- 1:44:49Gail and Cisco getting set.
- 1:44:52There's the stretch.
- 1:44:54The throw to first and Brock is back.
- 1:44:57Cisco just lobbed the ball.
- 1:45:02Bob Taylor the catcher.
- 1:45:06Bill White the batter.
- 1:45:08Brock a lead.
- 1:45:10There's the pitch.
- 1:45:11Pitch out, he's not going.
- 1:45:13One ball and no strikes.
- 1:45:16Runner at first, nobody out, fifth inning.
- 1:45:19Runner at first, nobody out, fifth inning.
- 1:45:29Now the signal given.
- 1:45:34The stretch, Brock a lead.
- 1:45:36There's the pitch, he's not going.
- 1:45:38Ball two.
- 1:45:42Two balls and no strikes.
- 1:45:44Let's go to Cincinnati and Rymay as Casey Stengel comes out of the dugout here.
- 1:45:50Right in the top of the sixth inning.
- 1:45:53The Spills have the start of something.
- 1:45:55They have runners at first and second, nobody out.
- 1:45:58And pitcher Jim Bunning at the plate.
- 1:46:00They're looking for the bun, of course.
- 1:46:04So all the fullies are threatening to get more up there with runners at first and second and nobody out.
- 1:46:10Casey Stengel is coming out to talk to Galen Sisco.
- 1:46:14A left hander is down on the bullpen.
- 1:46:17Will Hunter.
- 1:46:21Back to Cincinnati and Rymay.
- 1:46:23Here in the sixth inning the bases are now loaded.
- 1:46:26As Bunning dropped the bunk, they let it roll and it stayed fair.
- 1:46:29Bases loaded, nobody out.
- 1:46:31Gonzalez will be the batter.
- 1:46:33Wow.
- 1:46:35Come on, let's us have an inning now.
- 1:46:38It looks like the Phillies might be headed for one.
- 1:46:40Already leading four to nothing now.
- 1:46:42The bases loaded and nobody out.
- 1:46:49Come on, Bill.
- 1:46:50Two balls, no strikes.
- 1:46:52Sisco stays in there.
- 1:46:57Now the stretch, the hesitation.
- 1:46:59And here's the pitch.
- 1:47:01Line drive, right field, base hit.
- 1:47:04And Brock stops at second base.
- 1:47:08And the Cardinals have runners at first and second and nobody out.
- 1:47:12With Kenny Boyer coming up.
- 1:47:15Boyer walked and hit into a double play.
- 1:47:20And let's see now what the Cardinals do.
- 1:47:27Will Boyer hit or will he bunt?
- 1:47:29There's a left hander and a right hander down on the bullpen for the Mets.
- 1:47:33Boyer this year has faced Sisco six times.
- 1:47:36He had a home run and a triple off him earlier this year.
- 1:47:39But he's 0 for 1 here this afternoon, grounded into the double play.
- 1:47:43Yet he did hit the ball very hard and plows for the double play.
- 1:47:47All right, Boyer the batter.
- 1:47:50Runners at first and second and nobody out.
- 1:47:52The Cardinals are trailing three to two.
- 1:47:56The Phillies are leading the Reds.
- 1:47:59Now to signal gibbon.
- 1:48:01Right handed batter digging in.
- 1:48:06This crowd is really alive.
- 1:48:09The stretch, the hesitation.
- 1:48:12And now the pitch.
- 1:48:14It's low of fastball, ball one.
- 1:48:17One ball and no strikes.
- 1:48:20Hunter the left hander, Wakefield the right hander continue to pump in the bullpen.
- 1:48:26This might be Sisco's last man if he doesn't retire him.
- 1:48:32Now the stretch and the pitch to Boyer.
- 1:48:37A hot shot, left field, base hit.
- 1:48:40The tying run is in.
- 1:48:42Here's another man racing for third.
- 1:48:44There goes Boyer the second with a double.
- 1:48:47The Cardinals have tied it up.
- 1:48:50As Boyer double pass Charlie Smith into left field.
- 1:48:54And now Casey Stengel coming out.
- 1:48:58The score tied 3-3.
- 1:49:01Runners at second and third and nobody out.
- 1:49:04And I believe it's going to be Wakefield.
- 1:49:08Bill Wakefield is going to come in.
- 1:49:10That's for Boyer run batted in number 119.
- 1:49:14Let's go now to Cincinnati and see what's happened there.
- 1:49:18And here at Crosley Field the Phillies now lead 6-0.
- 1:49:246-0.
- 1:49:26Runners at first and second, nobody out.
- 1:49:28And Richie Allen at the plate.
- 1:49:31There you have it.
- 1:49:32The Phillies are now leading 6-0 and still batting.
- 1:49:38Oh what excitement here today.
- 1:49:40I wish you could all be here.
- 1:49:46Harry as we mentioned earlier,
- 1:49:48Cisco had fastball trouble in the inning.
- 1:49:51And when he did come in with what appeared to be an off speed pitch to Boyer 1-0,
- 1:49:56Kenny rather than being over eager waited for the pitch
- 1:50:00and lined it just inside the line for the big double.
- 1:50:03Something else in Cincinnati.
- 1:50:05What is it Roy?
- 1:50:06Harry Richie Allen has broken this game wide open.
- 1:50:09They now lead 9-0.
- 1:50:11He just homered into the right field.
- 1:50:139-0.
- 1:50:169-0 in favor of the Phillies.
- 1:50:20The Courtaulds could clinch the panel with a victory here today.
- 1:50:26Holy cow.
- 1:50:30Hold on to that cold bottle of Bush Bavarian beer friends
- 1:50:34because a celebration might take place here today.
- 1:50:44Angelo down in Omaha just ordered 100 cases he tells me in a wire.
- 1:50:50And you know we were on Armed Forces Network the other day
- 1:50:56and Willie Buholzer was Gosee Bush's brother-in-law
- 1:51:02who lives in Lausanne, Switzerland
- 1:51:06listening to the Armed Forces Network really pulling for the St. Louis Cardinals.
- 1:51:12From Lausanne we just received this wire.
- 1:51:15I hope the Armed Forces is with us again today because the Cardinals maybe will clinch the National League pennant.
- 1:51:22They are carrying our broadcast all over the world today.
- 1:51:27Hey, hey, what else is new?
- 1:51:34Listen to this crowd.
- 1:51:48All right, Bill Wakefield is the new pitcher.
- 1:51:53Game tied 3-3 the infield in.
- 1:52:01The windup by Wakefield the pitch to growth.
- 1:52:04Outside slider.
- 1:52:10Oh, face it now the Cardinals would be leading.
- 1:52:16Bill Wakefield who comes out of the Cardinal chain.
- 1:52:19One ball, no strike.
- 1:52:21Into the windup the pitch to growth.
- 1:52:23Here it is.
- 1:52:24He swung trying to hit the right field and he missed.
- 1:52:28One ball, one strike.
- 1:52:32They're listening to us down in Antigua in the British West Indies throughout the Caribbean area.
- 1:52:43So our appreciation to Gordon Bridge and the gang at Armed Forces Network.
- 1:52:49Here is growth.
- 1:52:52Here's the windup by Wakefield.
- 1:52:54Here's the pitch.
- 1:52:55He fouled it back and he's in the hole.
- 1:52:57Two strikes and a ball.
- 1:52:58Tim McCarver will be next.
- 1:53:00Cardinals are tied here.
- 1:53:023-3.
- 1:53:03Runners at second and third.
- 1:53:06Nobody out.
- 1:53:08The med infield playing shallow.
- 1:53:10Bill Wakefield in relief.
- 1:53:12He's out of Kansas City.
- 1:53:16Two strikes and a ball.
- 1:53:22Now all set.
- 1:53:25This crowd is in a hysterical frenzy.
- 1:53:32Two strikes and a ball.
- 1:53:36Now the line.
- 1:53:38Here's the pitch on the way.
- 1:53:40Fouled back and out of play.
- 1:53:42Grob trying to get a piece of that ball.
- 1:53:44The infield in.
- 1:53:46Two strikes and a ball on veteran shortstop Dick Grob.
- 1:53:52Bill Hunter a left-hander.
- 1:53:57And Jack Fisher a right-hander down to the bullpen for the Mets.
- 1:54:00We've got to get some runs.
- 1:54:03Two strikes and a ball.
- 1:54:10Wakefield is ready.
- 1:54:13Here's the wind up now and the pitch on the way.
- 1:54:16He fouled it back again.
- 1:54:18Grob staying alive.
- 1:54:19He's trying to hit that ball to the first base side of the infield.
- 1:54:23Whites at third.
- 1:54:24Boyers at second.
- 1:54:25Brock has scored.
- 1:54:27The tying run.
- 1:54:29The Cardinals with a chance to blow it open here.
- 1:54:33And the Phillies are leading 9-0 at Cincinnati.
- 1:54:40Two strikes, one ball.
- 1:54:42The wind, the pitch.
- 1:54:44Here it is.
- 1:54:46A ground ball up the middle of the pitchers.
- 1:54:49The run scores.
- 1:54:50Gord is thrown out at first base.
- 1:54:53The Cardinals lead 4-3.
- 1:54:56And Boyer held second base not knowing whether White would break for the plate or not.
- 1:55:05Give Wakefield an assist on the play also.
- 1:55:09He deflected the ball.
- 1:55:11A run batted in for Grob, number 70.
- 1:55:15Here's McCarver now with a runner at second and only one out.
- 1:55:24That Richie Allen has really put on a show this last week.
- 1:55:32Certainly in this Cincinnati series.
- 1:55:41As soon as we get a moment, we'll have our man in Cincinnati come in.
- 1:55:48There's the stretch.
- 1:55:50They're going to walk McCarver intentionally now to bring on Mike Shannon.
- 1:55:53An intentional pass.
- 1:55:55Well, while this is being done, Roy, any more up there in the sixth.
- 1:56:00So Harry, Bill Henry came in to put out the fire.
- 1:56:03Retired to free manny face.
- 1:56:05But a little bit too late as the Fills jumped all over.
- 1:56:09Joey J here in the sixth inning for five hits and five runs.
- 1:56:13Including a home run by Richie Allen, his second of the day, along with a double.
- 1:56:18Three out of four for Allen.
- 1:56:19So we're going into the bottom of the sixth.
- 1:56:21Nine to nothing, the Phillies open the reds.
- 1:56:25All right, McCarver has been intentionally passed.
- 1:56:28We have runners in first and second.
- 1:56:31And here's Mike Shannon.
- 1:56:32There's only one out.
- 1:56:34Down Maxville would be next.
- 1:56:36Oh, to pump one out of here now.
- 1:56:38To give a little push in.
- 1:56:44The Cardinals leading four to three.
- 1:56:48With Gibson in relief.
- 1:56:51Of Kurt Simmons.
- 1:56:54Now the stretch.
- 1:56:56Frown the bell.
- 1:56:58The pitch to Shannon.
- 1:57:00He takes it inside ball one.
- 1:57:02One ball, no strike.
- 1:57:04Shannon, who drove in a run our first of the day in the second inning.
- 1:57:08Hitting 262.
- 1:57:11Nine homers and 43 RBIs.
- 1:57:14One ball, no strikes.
- 1:57:16One out.
- 1:57:19All right, one ball, no strikes.
- 1:57:24There's Bill Wakefield getting ready.
- 1:57:27Now the pitch.
- 1:57:28Low ball, two.
- 1:57:30Two balls, no strikes.
- 1:57:32Maxville would be next.
- 1:57:37Oh, for an in-betweener now to get a little breathing room.
- 1:57:40Cardinals one run ahead.
- 1:57:43The Phillies nine runs ahead.
- 1:57:46Two balls, no strikes.
- 1:57:52The stretch, the hesitation.
- 1:57:54And the pitch on the way.
- 1:57:56Straight, slider hit the outside corner of the knee.
- 1:58:00Bill Wakefield, a product of the Ban Johnson League.
- 1:58:04The football Cardinals beat Washington 23 to 17.
- 1:58:10Two balls and a strike.
- 1:58:15Right hand batter waiting.
- 1:58:20Mike Shannon, the hitter.
- 1:58:22The pitch.
- 1:58:24He swings at a curve and he made him look bad on that one.
- 1:58:28Here comes the five for the Phillies on the scoreboard.
- 1:58:39Two balls, two strikes.
- 1:58:46Right handed batter digging in.
- 1:58:50There's the stretch.
- 1:58:53And now the pitch.
- 1:58:55He struck him out.
- 1:58:57Shannon goes down swinging.
- 1:59:00So here's Dale Maxville.
- 1:59:01He drove in a run on the fourth.
- 1:59:05Can he drive in another one here on the fifth?
- 1:59:08Bob Gibson would be next.
- 1:59:11Four to three in favor of the Cardinals.
- 1:59:18Maxville popped out and singled in a run.
- 1:59:25Now the one-one, the first pitch is a curveball outside.
- 1:59:29One ball and no strikes.
- 1:59:32Oh, if we win this one, the World Series will start here Wednesday against the Yankees.
- 1:59:40We've got to win this ball game.
- 1:59:44One ball, no strikes.
- 1:59:46The pitch.
- 1:59:47Outside, ball two.
- 1:59:49Two balls and nothing.
- 1:59:54Dale Maxville, that little fellow, but he can sting that ball.
- 1:59:59The outfield plays him shallow.
- 2:00:01They don't expect him to hit for power.
- 2:00:04They expect him to hit for power.
- 2:00:08Two balls, no strikes.
- 2:00:12Now the stretch.
- 2:00:14And from the belt, here's the pitch.
- 2:00:17Ground ball to the right, a nice hit.
- 2:00:19Here's the runner going to try to score.
- 2:00:21Christopher fumbles the ball.
- 2:00:23And the Cardinals have another run.
- 2:00:26Maxville, singled the right.
- 2:00:34And here comes Casey Stengelod.
- 2:00:38So Maxville certainly is atone for that pop lie.
- 2:00:42He's driven in two runs.
- 2:00:44And the Redbirds lead 5-3 with two out and pitcher Bob Gibson coming up.
- 2:00:50Jack Fisher, a right-hander, is going to be the next pitcher.
- 2:00:57What a motion packed with the installation of Dale Maxville into the lineup.
- 2:01:03You can imagine what went through his mind, the mind of anyone who would come into a game deciding the pennant, Harry.
- 2:01:10This young man had only been to the plate 22 times prior to this ball game,
- 2:01:15and he has come up with two clutch hits and driven in two big runs, perhaps the biggest runs of his career.
- 2:01:26All right, it will be Jack Fisher.
- 2:01:29So let's get a later report now as he walks in from the bullpen from Cincinnati.
- 2:01:35Here in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Reds are batting with one out.
- 2:01:39They have a man at first.
- 2:01:41And Chico Ruiz is at the plate.
- 2:01:44Billy's leading 9-0.
- 2:01:46And Harry, it's good to hear that's good news from St. Louis.
- 2:01:52All right, Jack Fisher takes over the third pitcher.
- 2:02:00He started the ball game yesterday, was knocked out.
- 2:02:06Cisco started today, then Wakefield.
- 2:02:12Bob Gibson, who was stymied trying for his 19th victory when he lost 1-0 Friday,
- 2:02:21would be the pitcher of record if the Cardinals can hold this lead.
- 2:02:27So he still would have a chance to win his 19th.
- 2:02:37Sadecki has won 20.
- 2:02:40Simmons has won 18.
- 2:02:44Gibson will be trying for number 19.
- 2:02:47And a youngster from Webster Groves, Billy Southworth, playing in a major league game,
- 2:02:53just hit his first home run.
- 2:02:56Billy Southworth playing for the Braves is homered with a man on.
- 2:03:00He's a graduate from Webster Groves High School, a great athlete over there.
- 2:03:06Well, Bob Gibson is going to be the hitter.
- 2:03:15We have runners at first and third.
- 2:03:18Maxville, who has driven in two runs today.
- 2:03:22He's single on the ground just beyond the glove of that crane pole.
- 2:03:30Oh, what a finish.
- 2:03:36You all enjoying yourselves here at the ballpark today?
- 2:03:44Wonderful.
- 2:03:48All right, here's Bob Gibson now, and here's the pitch.
- 2:03:51And it's a slider outside.
- 2:03:54Gibson a good-hitting pitcher.
- 2:03:56Five to three in favor of the Cardinals.
- 2:03:58We're in the last of the fifth.
- 2:04:04Phillies have a big lead over the Reds.
- 2:04:07Now the stretch.
- 2:04:09And the pitch on the way.
- 2:04:11He folded out a play into the upper deck.
- 2:04:14One ball and one strike.
- 2:04:35There's the hesitation from the belt.
- 2:04:38The pitch on the way.
- 2:04:40But he missed it.
- 2:04:41Strike two.
- 2:04:42Two strikes and the ball.
- 2:04:44It's a tough pitch to bump.
- 2:04:45Caught the outside corner at the knee.
- 2:04:48Two strikes and the ball.
- 2:04:55Now ready.
- 2:05:01From the belt.
- 2:05:04Fisher steps back.
- 2:05:06Two strikes, one ball.
- 2:05:08The pitch.
- 2:05:10Slider outside.
- 2:05:13That evens it up with two balls, two strikes.
- 2:05:27Two balls, two strikes.
- 2:05:31The pitch to Gibson.
- 2:05:33And here it is.
- 2:05:35A high pop foul.
- 2:05:36Might go out of play.
- 2:05:38Over near the stands and nobody can reach it.
- 2:05:42Two balls, two strikes.
- 2:05:45The Cardinals with a chance to clinch the National League pennant.
- 2:05:50As the Reds are trailing nine to nothing.
- 2:05:54The Redbirds leading five to three.
- 2:06:01Jack Fisher getting ready.
- 2:06:05Oh, the Fates wouldn't be so cruel as to deprive us this one, would they?
- 2:06:13Two balls, two strikes.
- 2:06:15A stretch.
- 2:06:17The pitch.
- 2:06:19He struck him out.
- 2:06:21Gibson goes down swinging.
- 2:06:23Well, that ends the inning, but a good inning.
- 2:06:25Three runs score on three hits.
- 2:06:29No errors, two left.
- 2:06:31The Cardinals have stranded seven and at the end of five,
- 2:06:34The Cardinals five, the Mets three.
- 2:06:41Well, here we're going into the six.
- 2:06:43Charlie Smith, who homered and pumped up will be the hitter against Bob Gibson.
- 2:06:48Let's go to Cincinnati now.
- 2:06:50Roy, what happened in the bottom of the sixth?
- 2:06:52Well, Harry, we're going into the seventh now.
- 2:06:55The Phillies still leading nine to nothing.
- 2:06:57These Reds can't do a thing against Jim Bunning.
- 2:07:00He's allowed just three hits, struck out four and walked no one.
- 2:07:04And Tony Taylor will lead off here in the seventh inning.
- 2:07:07The Phillies leading nine to nothing.
- 2:07:09All right, here's Charlie Smith and the first pitch swung on.
- 2:07:11A little fly ball to the short center.
- 2:07:13Flood coming on and he makes the catch.
- 2:07:16Smith popped the flood in short center field.
- 2:07:19One out.
- 2:07:23Well, I know there's going to be a lot of commotion and excitement after the game.
- 2:07:27If it ends like we all pray it does.
- 2:07:30So as we go along, we certainly want to express our appreciation.
- 2:07:34On behalf of everybody up here,
- 2:07:39Roy, you're a loyalty and friendship down through the years.
- 2:07:42It's been a hectic, marvelous, wonderful year.
- 2:07:45Here's a pitch to Bob Taylor and it's a curved strike call.
- 2:07:50To our stations along the line.
- 2:07:53To our originating station with Bob Hyland.
- 2:07:57To our Gardner advertising agency.
- 2:07:59Here's a pitch. There's a curved strike call.
- 2:08:03Bill Fisher and Ed Langan.
- 2:08:06To all the people here at the ballpark.
- 2:08:09Doggie Lynch and Emma Bach and Ed Keating and Eddie Messier.
- 2:08:14Among others, two strikes, no balls.
- 2:08:16A pitch to Taylor's outside.
- 2:08:19To our various engineers.
- 2:08:23Our originating station.
- 2:08:26Roy May who's in Cincinnati today.
- 2:08:29For Jack Buck and for Jerry Gross.
- 2:08:31Here's a pitch. Hot shot to left.
- 2:08:33Oh, Gross made a great effort.
- 2:08:35But it's a single and Taylor is on with his second hit.
- 2:08:40So just in case we don't have a chance at the end of the game and all the excitement that might be existing.
- 2:08:46To Bernie Fox and the rest of the fellows who do so, so much for us.
- 2:08:56Too many of the engineers to mention but we mention them all after every game.
- 2:09:02Here's Ed Craneful.
- 2:09:05Boy, here's a threatThe left-handed batterThe pitch is a strike call.
- 2:09:11He drove in the only run against Gibson Friday night.
- 2:09:14Five to three, the Cardinals are leading.
- 2:09:22Now from the belt, the pitch.
- 2:09:25Low to our sponsors, those on the dugout show and those on the scoreboard show.
- 2:09:33And above all, those on the baseball.
- 2:09:35Bush, Bavarian, and Beer and the American Tobacco Company.
- 2:09:39One ball, one strike.
- 2:09:41The pitch on the way to Craneful is a strike call.
- 2:09:44Two strikes and a ball.
- 2:09:52We're in the sixth.
- 2:09:55Five to three in favor of the Cardinals.
- 2:09:58Who would like to get a few more runs?
- 2:10:00Like about seven more.
- 2:10:03Two strikes, one ball.
- 2:10:06And the pitch on the way.
- 2:10:08Fast ball outside.
- 2:10:11It's even up at two balls, two strikes.
- 2:10:18Yeah.
- 2:10:21Two balls, two strikes.
- 2:10:24Ed Craneful waiting. Here's the pitch.
- 2:10:27Low outside, ball three.
- 2:10:30Three balls, two strikes.
- 2:10:32On Ed Craneful, a dangerous left-handed batter who's hit ten home runs,
- 2:10:37including a big one with two on yesterday.
- 2:10:40Got to worry about himThe Cardinals leading only by two.
- 2:10:43It's still anybody's ball game.
- 2:10:45Three balls, two strikes.
- 2:10:48The stretch.
- 2:10:50Here's the pitch.
- 2:10:52He walked him.
- 2:10:54So that men at first and second with one out, let's go to Cincinnati, right?
- 2:10:58In the seventh, the Phillies now lead ten to nothing,
- 2:11:02as Tony Taylor scored on Bobby Wine's sacrifice fly.
- 2:11:06After you, Harry.
- 2:11:08So the Phillies continue to add. They now lead ten to nothing in the seventh.
- 2:11:13Here's George Altman.
- 2:11:20Left-handed batter, Bob Gibson.
- 2:11:23Altman represents the lead run of the plate, the stretch.
- 2:11:27Here's the pitch.
- 2:11:28He swings and he misses. Strike one.
- 2:11:30One strike and oh ball.
- 2:11:34One blowing out towards right field, and you've got to worry about that every time a left-handed batter comes up.
- 2:11:40Gordon Richardson starts limbering up.
- 2:11:44Gibson pitched a tough ball game Friday night. Here's the stretch.
- 2:11:47The pitch to Altman, low, and that evens it up.
- 2:11:51One ball, one strike.
- 2:11:56Altman has walked and singled in this ball game.
- 2:12:03The Mets.
- 2:12:06Threatening here in the sixth.
- 2:12:08The pitch is on the way.
- 2:12:10A bouncing ball, it's fouled.
- 2:12:12And boy, you can see Altman trying to pull.
- 2:12:15Because the wind is blowing strongly towards right, any ball hit at all well will be carried out of here.
- 2:12:24And Altman represents the lead run.
- 2:12:27Two strikes and a ball.
- 2:12:30And the lead is only two.
- 2:12:33Two strikes and a ball.
- 2:12:41Now the stretch, the hesitation, and the pitch on the way.
- 2:12:46Curve into the dirt.
- 2:12:49He really tried to snap that one off.
- 2:12:51Two balls, two strikes.
- 2:12:53One out, runners at first and second, the ball game in the sixth.
- 2:13:04Bob Gibson waiting.
- 2:13:07Now the stretch.
- 2:13:09Here's the pitch to Altman.
- 2:13:11A ground ball to Bill White.
- 2:13:13He's got it. Gives it to Gibson covering.
- 2:13:16The runners advance to second and third, and the pitcher will be coming up.
- 2:13:20And it's been rolled out from Bill White to Bob Gibson.
- 2:13:24And now let's see, just see Gander is going to be the pinch hitter.
- 2:13:29Gander is going to pinch hit.
- 2:13:32A left-handed batter with power.
- 2:13:34We're going to pause here for station identification.
- 2:13:37This is the Cardinals baseball network.
- 2:13:40Kim works on, Kim works up, I'm St. Louis.
- 2:13:43Manager Johnny Keenaw talking to Bob Gibson.
- 2:13:46Gander, a left-handed batter.
- 2:13:49Kevin Homers, driven in 35 runs, batting 271.
- 2:13:54He's always dangerous, but particularly on this kind of a day,
- 2:13:58with the wind blowing strongly towards right.
- 2:14:01I have to keep repeating that because that can be a big factor.
- 2:14:05It's already been one on a pop fly that was blown away from Dow Maxville.
- 2:14:11Looking back, Harry, Gander hit a home runoff, Bob Gibson, in a ball game earlier.
- 2:14:16So he has had good success against Bob.
- 2:14:20Stengel perhaps remembered that.
- 2:14:22He hit a two-run, first-inning home run in a ball game played here in St. Louis.
- 2:14:27Eventually Gibson hung on to win the ball game,
- 2:14:30but he can hit the ball out even without a win. Good power.
- 2:14:34So Gibson's going to stay in there, and he'll pitch to Jesse Gander.
- 2:14:40There's two out, and the Mets will have a new pitcher, Bill Hunter,
- 2:14:49facing the Cardinals in the sixth.
- 2:14:55They're going to want Gander intentionally to get to Bobby Klaus,
- 2:14:59a daring move because this is the lead run of the ball game.
- 2:15:03Gander is going to be intentionally passed.
- 2:15:08Klaus has had a single and a double, two out of three.
- 2:15:14Klaus against Gibson Friday night, fanned twice, but had a base hit.
- 2:15:23So the lead run will be at first base with two out.
- 2:15:28And Klaus, the right-handed batter, will be coming up.
- 2:15:32An intentional pass. We're in the sixth.
- 2:15:39Bobby Klaus up there, and Roy McMillan will be next.
- 2:15:44So Gibson in a jam.
- 2:15:57Now to wind up, and here's a pitch. It's a strike call.
- 2:16:03One strike and no balls. A fast-moving slider caught the outside corner.
- 2:16:09One strike, no balls. Two men are out.
- 2:16:14Here's a pitch. Slider missed outside. That evens it up.
- 2:16:22Bobby Klaus batting 221. Right-handed batter. Gibson getting ready.
- 2:16:32Now to wind up, and here's a pitch on the way. He's swinging. He missed strike two.
- 2:16:38Two strikes and a ball. We're in the sixth.
- 2:16:45The Cardinals leading 5-3. Right-handed batter waiting.
- 2:16:54Now to wind. Here's a pitch on the way. He foul-tipped it back.
- 2:17:00Two strikes and a ball, and Klaus was trying to hit that ball in the right field.
- 2:17:11Bob Gibson gets set. Bases are jammed.
- 2:17:16Now to wind up, and here's the pitch. Just missed with it inside, and it evens up a two-balls, two strikes.
- 2:17:27The right-hand batter digging in. He hit his fourth home run of the year yesterday.
- 2:17:32Two balls, two strikes. Here's the wind-up. Here's the pitch. Ball three now.
- 2:17:43And we're really in a jamThe runners will be going. Three balls, two strikes.
- 2:17:52They want to look at the baseball. He got out in front of Bobby Klaus, but now has come down to a crucial pitch.
- 2:18:00Three balls and two strikes, two out, bases loaded. Cardinals leading only 5-3.
- 2:18:17Crowd quiet. You can hear a pin drop. Three balls, two strikes, the stretch.
- 2:18:24Here's the pitch. Everybody going. Forced in a run.
- 2:18:32He walked him, and now that makes it 5-4. And here is a tough hitter in the clutch, Ryan McMillan.
- 2:18:40He doubled in two runs and a fifth to put him into the lead. He comes up again in the spot where he can put him into the lead.
- 2:18:50Lauren Richardson and Bob Humphrey in the bullpen.
- 2:18:57Gibson has walked three men in this inning. Now the wind-up, and here's the pitch.
- 2:19:03Outside, ball one. One ball, no strikes.
- 2:19:09At the end of seven innings, the Phillies lead the Reds 10-0, but we have our own problems here.
- 2:19:16One ball, no strikesThe pitch now. A bouncing ball up the middle.
- 2:19:21Maxville is there, and he steps on the bag for the force out.
- 2:19:27A high hopper that Maxville fielded while running to his right stepped on the bag for the force play.
- 2:19:33The inning is over. One run. One hit. No errors. Three left.
- 2:19:42And we go into the bottom of the sixthThe Cardinals five, the Mets four.
- 2:19:59Well, we go into the bottom of the sixth, and we'll have the tamponabatting order against Will Hunter, who did a fine relief job against the Cardinals.
- 2:20:08And again, the Galen-Cisco beat us two to one.
- 2:20:20So Will Hunter will be the pitcher, and Jesse Gonder, Gonder will be batting in the ninth slot, and Hunter, the pitcher, will be hitting in the sixth spot.
- 2:20:36And Hawk Taylor is out of the ball again.
- 2:20:41This one is nip and tuck, five to four in favor of the Cardinals in the bottom of the sixth, while at the end of seven in Cincinnati, the Phillies lead 10-0.
- 2:20:52The Cardinals could clinch the pennant with a victory. We've got to win to clinch it.
- 2:21:02If we lose, there would be a three-way tie.
- 2:21:11All right, here's Flood. He's hitless. Nothing out of two. Bill Hunter on the hill.
- 2:21:21There's the pitch on the way. It's a fastball strike off. Hunter, a hard-throwing left-hander.
- 2:21:34Now the line, the pitch on the way. Hot shot to the shot stop. McMillan's got it. Over to first base in time.
- 2:21:43So Flood rolls out to Roy McMillan. That will bring up Lou Brock. He's had one out of two.
- 2:21:57He's been on base every time, once with a base hit, once on an air, once on the wall.
- 2:22:03One out, nobody on. Five to four in favor of the Cardinals.
- 2:22:09The windup now, the pitch is on the way. A line drive base hit in the left center.
- 2:22:14He might be able to get a double out of it. He's around first. He's going to try for second.
- 2:22:18Here's Altman's throw. He is safe.
- 2:22:24So Brock doubles in the left center. He just took advantage of Altman's weak throwing arm.
- 2:22:32No question about it, Harry. Schultz wasted no time. Neither did Brock and Benson on the play earlier on the base hit to Altman in left field.
- 2:22:41Sent McCarver in a situation earlier and there was no hesitation knowing the capabilities of the out-feeders and especially Altman who was with the ball club.
- 2:22:51Here now is Bill White, a man in scoring position with one outThe Cardinals leading by a run five to four.
- 2:23:02The stretch. And the pitch.
- 2:23:07There's a drive. Way back. It might be. It could be. It is. A whole run. Listen to the crowd.
- 2:23:33Look at those red birds in that dugout. Everybody standing up. And the Cardinals lead seven to four now.
- 2:23:44Well, is that a happy dugout?
- 2:23:55Here now is Kenny Boyer. That was White's 21st home run. There's the pitch by Hunter. And it's high.
- 2:24:08That was not supposed to hit left handers, is he Harry? He really teed off on that one. It looked like a two iron drive. It kept going higher and higher.
- 2:24:17Landed out on Grand Avenue. Here's the pitch to Boyer now. And it's high and outside. Ball two. Two balls and no strike.
- 2:24:27The red birds lead seven to four. Bottom of the sixth. Cincinnati is losing ten to nothing in the eighth.
- 2:24:38Here's the pitch to Kenny Boyer. And it's high and outside. Ball three. A double by Brock and a homer by White.
- 2:24:49White now has 102 RBIs for the year. Third straight year, of course, and he's driven in 100 runs or more. He had exactly 102 two years ago.
- 2:25:07Now the line. And here's the pitch. High and inside. He walked him. And the crowd, hungry for more runs, are really clenching.
- 2:25:20In 1962, White drove in 102 runs. About a 324. Last year, he had 29 homers that year. Or rather, 20 homers. He drove in 102.
- 2:25:33Last year, 27 homers, 109 RBIs. And this year, 21 homers and 102 RBI. Boyer on at first base, one out.
- 2:25:56And he groped the batterThe stretch. Now the pitch. High fastball. Grewd, who drove in a run on a big fifth inning, and also scored one on the fourth when he let off with a double.
- 2:26:12One ball, no strikes.
- 2:26:17Ninety-three games will win the pennantThe Cardinals won 93 last year and finished six games out.
- 2:26:27Their 93rd victory, if they get it today, will clench the pennant. One ball, no strikes.
- 2:26:37The pitch. Foul back into the stands. One ball, one strike.
- 2:26:54Dick Grewd, the hitter. Two runs are inThe Redbirds lead. Seven to four. Bill White hit one out of sight. Bill Hunter getting ready.
- 2:27:08And now the stretch. From the bow. And a pitch to Grewd. Strike call. Two strikes and a ball. A fastball over the inside corner.
- 2:27:20Right hand hitter up there. Cardinals again with a three-run lead. In fact, it's their longest lead. Seven to four.
- 2:27:30They led one to nothing. Tied one-one, then led two to one. Then behind three to two, then led five to three. And now lead seven to four.
- 2:27:43The stretchThe pitch to Grewd. And here it is. Turn around and he missed. Struck him out.
- 2:27:53Grewd swung in a high fastball and struck out. And that will bring up McCarver. Seven to four, the Cardinals lead in the last of the sixth.
- 2:28:02McCarver left-handed batter. He doubled in the second and scored our first run. He's had one out of two.
- 2:28:26Now the sign given. Ready. And the pitch is on the way to McCarver. There she goes! Way back! It might be out of here! It could be!
- 2:28:39It's off the screen! Here's another man going to score! Here's McCarver stopping at second. He's going to be caught now between second and third.
- 2:28:47Here's Charlie Smith. Hey! the throw hits McCarver! Bounces in the left right field! Now he's trying for third! the throw's going to get him! He's out!
- 2:28:59But Tim doubled off the right field screen. And the Cardinals lead eight to four. In getting back to second base safely, the throw hit him on the shoulder and bounced into right.
- 2:29:10But Christopher recovered it and threw to third and McCarver was out. So it's a double, a run down and in for McCarver as Boyer scored all the way from first.
- 2:29:23It's a big inning for the Redbirds who score three. There were three hits. And let's see if they charge an error. And nobody left on base.
- 2:29:35At the end of sixth, the Cardinals eight and the Mets four.
- 2:29:43We're going to the top of the seventh. Confetti's already being streaming all over the place.
- 2:29:54Oh, if this can hold up until the end of the top of the ninth, this joint will go crazy. In fact, it might be crazy now. I know I am.
- 2:30:08Eight to four in favor of the Cardinals. You know, let's just for a moment go back to Cincinnati. Roy, are you there?
- 2:30:19Here Harry, we're in the bottom of the eighth. They're two out. Jim Bunning continues to be superbThe Phillies still lead ten to nothing and the fans have started to leave here.
- 2:30:30Okay, so that game's going to end before this one. Here's Joe Christopher to lead off the seventh inning.
- 2:30:41We're in the top of the seventh. Eight to four in favor of the Cardinals.
- 2:30:49Now the wind up by Gibson the pitch. Christopher ducks out of the way. Ball one.
- 2:31:00Boy, I'm glad that game in Cincinnati has lopsided. I don't think we could stand anymore, except one ball, no strikes.
- 2:31:10Here's the pitch on the way and it's high on inside ball twoThe Phillies are leading ten to nothingThe Cardinals are winning eight to four.
- 2:31:21If that continues, the Cardinals clinch the pen and today with a 93rd victory, two balls, no strikes.
- 2:31:30Joe Christopher, the hitter here in the seventh. Now the pitch. Inside. Did it? He claims it hit him and it did. Hit by a pitch ball. Barely ticked him.
- 2:31:45Joe Christopher from the Virgin Isles. Just ticked by a pitch ball and that'll bring up Jim Hickman.
- 2:31:56Gibson has been struggling. He's walked three, he's hit one, he's allowed one hit. He's allowed one run.
- 2:32:05But he's out in front. Eight to four and activity now on the bullpen. Barney Schultz gets up.
- 2:32:13Along with Gordon Richardson. So here's Hickman. And here comes manager Johnny Key now.
- 2:32:33We might have a change here. Gibson on the hill has been struggling. We're in the seventh.
- 2:32:43Keane talks to the Cardinal pitcher. Big crowd on hand. Must be around 30,000.
- 2:32:53Gibson will stay in there. Jim Hickman the batter. He's 0 for 3 today. Boy, these Mets don't go down easy at all.
- 2:33:04Good thing we're scoring runs today because so are they. Eight to four in favor of the Cardinals.
- 2:33:14Now Gibson gets set. Here's the pitch on the way. Strike call to Hickman. A fast ball. One strike and no ball.
- 2:33:34Now from the beltThe pitch. A slow tap foul. Strike two. Two strikes and nothing.
- 2:33:45A runner at first, nobody out. We're in the seventh. At the end of eight innings at Cincinnati, the Phillies 10, the Reds nothing.
- 2:33:57Now the stretchThe pitch. It's high. Two strikes and a ball on Jim Hickman.
- 2:34:10Top of the seventh. Eight to four Cardinals. Now the sign and the stretch. From the belt, the pitch.
- 2:34:22Swung and he fouled it back and boy he had a good cut at that one. Come on, no more excitement. Let's just get these guys out.
- 2:34:30One, two, three. Get it over with. Two strikes and a ball. Right hand batter digging in.
- 2:34:44And the pitch on the way. A high pop fly on the infield. Grode calling for the ball. Waiting for it. He takes it.
- 2:34:55So Hickman popped to Grode. One away. And here's Charlie Smith.
- 2:35:02Charlie, a right-handed batter, tied up the ball game with a home run on the fourth.
- 2:35:07The Mets tied it up 1-1 at the fourth, then took the lead 3-2 in the fifth. But the Cardinals scored three in the bottom in the fifth and three in the sixth.
- 2:35:17Bill White has the only Cardinal home run. Charlie Smith has hit the only one for the Mets.
- 2:35:25Now the stretch and the pitch to Smith. It's a strike call. One strike and no ball.
- 2:35:43Bob Gibson readyThe pitch. Swung, pop fly on the infield. That's going to be easy.
- 2:35:49Maxville under the ball. And he has it. Two out here in the top of the seventh.
- 2:35:57And that will bring up a pinch hitter now for Hunter. See who the hitter is going to be.
- 2:36:05There's two out of runner at firstThe Cardinals leading 8-4.
- 2:36:11The St. Louis Cardinals with a chance to clinch the 1964 pennant.
- 2:36:21Larry Elliott, a left-handed batter, is going to hit for Hunter.
- 2:36:27Funny how things develop.
- 2:36:31About 10 days ago we all were hopeful. We figured we had an outside chance because we played three games of the Phillies
- 2:36:41and knew that the Phillies would have to finish up in Cincinnati.
- 2:36:45And we figured that they might have trouble over there.
- 2:36:49Well, just the opposite. It's the Reds, when they actually played over there, who had a chance to do something.
- 2:37:00And it's the Reds who have had trouble losing yesterday and getting trounced today.
- 2:37:10Larry Elliott, a left-handed batter. There's a pitch by Gibson. And it's fastball outside.
- 2:37:29One ball and no strikes. Elliott hitting.229 with nine homers, 22 RBIs.
- 2:37:39Left-handed hitterThe stretch, the pitch. A high pop foul out of play.
- 2:37:46And the count is evened up with a ball and a strike.
- 2:37:58We're in the top of the seventh cardinals' lead, 8-4.
- 2:38:06Now the stretch readyThe pitch. It's a strike call. Fastball right in there. Two strikes and a ball.
- 2:38:23Left-handed batter digging in. Now ready. And the pitch. It's a strike call. He's out of there.
- 2:38:37Fastball over the outside corner. No hits, no runs, no errors, one left.
- 2:38:42We're going to the bottom half of the seventh inningThe cardinals' eighth, the Mets' fourth.
- 2:38:49Are you particular about taste? You bet I'm particular. And my Palmels prove it.
- 2:38:55Particular people take particular pleasure in the good taste of Palmel.
- 2:39:04Palmel, a long cigarette that's long on flavor. Yes, Palmel's natural mildness means just one thing.

- 2:40:10Be particular. Buy Palmel famous cigarettes outstanding. And they are bought from the American Tobacco Company.
- 2:40:21We're not going to Cincinnati as much as we did earlier because of the lopsided score over there, thank goodness.
- 2:40:31Well, let's see now what the developments are. Roy May?
- 2:40:35All right, Harry, we're going into the bottom of the ninth inning. Jim Bunning has but three outs to get, and it will all be over here in Cincinnati.
- 2:40:42And just about half of this capacity crowd is left at this time. Ten to nothing Phillies going into the bottom of the ninth.
- 2:40:50Very good. Roy, come in with us as soon as it's over.
- 2:40:55Danny Rybun will be the new pitcher. Slim Will the right-hander was obtained from the Brave organization. He pitched in relief yesterday.
- 2:41:16And as we start the bottom half of the seventh inning, the score eight to four in favor of the card.
- 2:41:29Mike Shannon will lead it off. Shannon has had one out of three drove in a run.
- 2:41:44Here's the wind up now, the pitch is on the way. He swung and he followed it back. One strike and no balls.
- 2:41:59Right-hand batter waiting. Mike straddles a plateThe wind up now, the pitch is on the way.
- 2:42:09A bouncing ball to third. That's going to be easy. Here's Charlie Smith's peg in time. One out on the bottom of the seventh.
- 2:42:17Here's Dow Maxville. This kid has driven in two runs, gets a nice hand from the crowd.
- 2:42:23Popped up, drove in a run on the fourth, drove in a run on the fifth.
- 2:42:29Had a little trouble on a pop fly but a strong wind is blowing and we've seen even veteran infielders or outfielders have trouble under those conditions.
- 2:42:41The pitch swung on. A high fly ball to right center will be caught. Under the ball is Christopher Tugah.
- 2:42:49Two out on the bottom of the seventh and here's Bob Gibson coming out. He'll get a fine hand from the crowd.
- 2:43:08Gibson a good hitter. Fanned his only time up in this ball game. Rybun gets set.
- 2:43:14The wind now, the pitch is on the way and it's high and inside.
- 2:43:22The Mets will have the lower end of the batting order in the eighthThe crane pool will be starting it off and then Altman, two dangerous left-handed hitters.
- 2:43:30They're down on the batting order because Simmons, the left-hander, started for the Cardinals. One ball, no strikes, the pitch. High and outside, ball two.
- 2:43:41There's two out in the bottom of the ninth at Cincinnati, 10 to nothing Philadelphia.
- 2:43:51Two balls, no strikes. There's the line now, the pitch on the way. There's a high pop fly back and out of play. Two balls, one strike.
- 2:44:05Bottom half of the seventh, the Cardinals leading eight to four.
- 2:44:16Now the signal. Ready. Two balls and a strike. Rybun's pitch. He foul-tipped back.
- 2:44:27Two balls, two strikes. Thirty thousand one hundred and forty-six paid here today.
- 2:44:38Two balls, two strikes. Now ready. Here's the wind-up. Here's the pitch. He struck him out swinging.
- 2:44:49So at the end of seventh, as it's knuffing across for the Cardinals, the score remains the Redbirds eight and the Mets four.
- 2:44:59Listen. It was quiet on the banks of the big Daytona Speedway. This was the beginning of a new heritage for Mercury Comet.
- 2:45:08A heritage that goes back to Daytona, where Comet became the world's 100,000-mile durability champion.
- 2:45:29Today, a fiery new successor to Comet's proud heritage carries on the spirit of Daytona, Comet 65.
- 2:45:38We couldn't make it much tougher, so we made it even livelier, more beautiful.
- 2:45:43Gave it a sleek, low look of action. More usable power in every Comet engine, up to an optional 225 horsepower of the age.
- 2:45:53The new and more beautiful addition of the world's 100,000-mile durability champion, Mercury Comet 65.
- 2:46:00That's your Mercury dealers now.
- 2:46:06We're going into the top of the eighth inning. Crane Pool will lead it off, and here's Jerry Gross to tell you about it.
- 2:46:13Bob Gibson winds and pitches and gets the fastball in. Belfort Buckel high for a call strike.
- 2:46:19Crane Pool ripped us in the series five for nine prior to this ballgame, but he's 0 for 2 walked his last time up.
- 2:46:26We're in the eighth. Gibson trying to hold it down.
- 2:46:37Gibson misses with a slider inside. Here's Harry.
- 2:46:40It's all over her in Cincinnati. Philadelphia 1, 10 to nothing.
- 2:46:46Roy May, a great job, boy. Come on home for the World Series.
- 2:46:50Thank you, Harry. I thought for the very end. I'll see you Wednesday at the opener.
- 2:46:55Okay, now all we got to do is win it.
- 2:46:59Bob Gibson with a 1-1 count pitches. It's swung on in line fair, just beyond the glove of white out in the right field. It's a base hit.
- 2:47:08So we're in the eighth inning, and it, Crane Pool, opens up with a line drive base hit.
- 2:47:14Harry's going to hustle down, and he'll be on the field, very close to the corner of the Cardinal dugout,
- 2:47:21and be able to bring you some postgame interviews, which I think you'll find very interesting.
- 2:47:27Here's George Altman.
- 2:47:31Altman has a base hit on two trips.
- 2:47:35Crane Pool is the runner on at first baseThe pitch to Altman is in there for a strike.
- 2:47:43Altman walked in the third, singled up the middle in the fifth, and bounced to the first baseman.
- 2:47:52Bob Gibson ready to work. We're in the eighth inningThe pitch is swung on, hit out into left field.
- 2:47:57Lou Brock loses it momentarily in the sun, then backs up and makes the catch.
- 2:48:01Throws back into the infield, one down, and Bob Gibson has only five outs to get
- 2:48:10to nail down a pennant for the 1964 National League race in the Cardinals.
- 2:48:19KM Orks and KM Orks FM St. Louis. Men don't miss Hill Brothers' big work shoe sale.
- 2:48:24First quality heavy duty work shoes, choice of high tops in Oxford, is now just $4.88 at Hill Brothers.
- 2:48:35Eighth inning. Bob Gibson's pitch as the fastball gets away from McCarver inside,
- 2:48:40goes back to the screen and moving on to second base is Ed Crane Pool.
- 2:48:45Redbirds have out hit the Mets, 11 to 9. Cardinals leading 8 to 4.
- 2:48:53We're in the top of the eighth inning.
- 2:48:58McCarver made a good save on a ball in the sixth inning on a 2-2 count to George Altman.
- 2:49:06Went down in the dirt, knocked the ball down. One ball, no strikes.
- 2:49:10The pitch to Gonder swung on, hit sharply down to Boyer.
- 2:49:13Kent stays with it on one bounce, throws and gets it. Two down, and the runner at second holds on.
- 2:49:20Let's pause for station identification. This is the Cardinals' baseball network.
- 2:49:25You're listening to KMOX and KMOX FM, the voice of St. Louis, 24 hours a day.
- 2:49:32Now once again, an exciting ball game. Let's go back to Bush Stadium.
- 2:49:43Gibson ready as we bring you back to action here on the top of the eighth with two down.
- 2:49:48The pitch to the right-handed hitter, the leadoff man, Bobby Fous is in there for a strike.
- 2:49:53Fous has skied to center, single to third, double to right, and walk.
- 2:49:58Right-handed batter on second base, it's Ed Cranepool.
- 2:50:02Gibson's one-strike pitch is a fastball that hits the corner of the glove of McCarver
- 2:50:08and bounces away and moving on to third base.
- 2:50:14On the play will be the runner down at second. It's a fastball against McCarver.
- 2:50:25Runner down at third, it's 8-4, eighth inning, Bobby Klaus against Gibson.
- 2:50:30The pitch just misses outside, two balls and a strike.
- 2:50:35Gibson came onto the ball game with runners on second base. McMillan was on second.
- 2:50:46The pitch is swung on and missed, strike two.
- 2:50:51McMillan was on second after doubling two home in the fifth inning,
- 2:50:56and he forced Christopher to sky to Shannon and got Hickman on a ground ball to the catcher, a number.
- 2:51:02Two balls and two strikes, two down. Klaus swings and he fouls it back into the screen.
- 2:51:10Activity in the bullpen, Barney Schultz and Gordon Richardson, a right and left-hander respectively.
- 2:51:16Looking ahead to the last of the seventh, it'll be the pitcher's spot coming up for the Cardinals.
- 2:51:278-4, Gibson is ready. Two balls, two strikes, two outThe pitch to the right-hander,
- 2:51:32a fastball that drives him back and the count is full, three and two.
- 2:51:36Out on deck it's Roy McMillan. Gibson's fastball moving inside.
- 2:51:43Gibby, as you know, pitched eight innings on Friday.
- 2:51:49He's been strong. Three balls, two strikes, the pitch, swung on and missed, he's stuck in there.
- 2:52:00Bob Gibson registers his second strikeout here in the top of the eighth inning,
- 2:52:05and in the eighth, no runs, one hit, no errors, one runner left on it.
- 2:52:10Third at the end is seven and a half, the score.
- 2:52:14The Cardinals eight and the Mets four.
- 2:52:21The way Gibson's pitching, he wastes no time and it's indicative of these days, everything rush, rush, rush.
- 2:52:28Hurry up, go here, go there. You know what I mean, but there's one thing that'll never be rushed,
- 2:52:34and you guessed it, Bush Bavarian beer. It takes time to brew a really good beer.
- 2:52:39Time for aging, time to get that rugged but delicate flavor, time for natural carbonation.
- 2:52:45Sure, it takes more time to brew Bush and costs more too,
- 2:52:49but the full-bodied satisfaction that you get with Bush is still yours to enjoy at popular prices.
- 2:52:55Get to know the beer that's naturally brewed, slow and easy, Bush Bavarian beer.
- 2:53:01Get to know flavor for the fun of it.
- 2:53:04Flavor for the fun of it. Flavor wherever you go.
- 2:53:13Break up Bush Bavarian beer, you ought to get to know.
- 2:53:19Here's flavor you ought to get to know because Bush is brewed the way beer was meant to be brewed, the natural way.
- 2:53:26Get Bush.
- 2:53:27There's a mountain of flavor in Bush Bavarian, Bush Bavarian beer. Break up.
- 2:53:40Now we go into the last half of the seventh inning, or rather the eighth inning, I beg your pardon.
- 2:53:46Last of the eighth inning, and it'll be Kirk Flood, top of the batting order, Redbirds leading 8-4,
- 2:53:51Dennis Riven out on the mound for the New York Mets.
- 2:53:55Riven winds and pitches to Flood and misses outside.
- 2:53:59One ball, no strikes.
- 2:54:00The Cardinals struck for one run in the second, one in the fourth, and three in the fifth and sixth.
- 2:54:07Trying to nail down the pennant here in St. Louis.
- 2:54:10Dennis Riven pitches now to Kirk Flood.
- 2:54:12Swung on, hit up into the air on the deep right center.
- 2:54:14Back goes the right feet of the ball.
- 2:54:16It's way back. Back. It's gone.
- 2:54:18Home run!
- 2:54:29Kirk Flood has just put the Cardinals out on top, 9-4.
- 2:54:36And look at that bench!
- 2:54:42Flood hits his fifth home run of the campaign,
- 2:54:45and Lou Brock is the hitter, with the Redbirds adding another here in the last half of the eighth inning.
- 2:54:54Brock hits a ground ball, foul down the right field line.
- 2:55:00Flood gets his first base hit here in the eighth inning, and the Cardinals lead 9-4.
- 2:55:12Thirty thousand, one hundred and forty-six frenzied fans on hand.
- 2:55:17Curved ball, slap foul into the left field bleachers.
- 2:55:22No balls and two strikes.
- 2:55:31Activity now in the bullpen for the Mets.
- 2:55:34The left-hander, Locke, is up and warming up.
- 2:55:37Dennis Riven came on in the ball game and retired him in the seventh.
- 2:55:41But Kirk Flood has rocked him for a home run.
- 2:55:45Two strikes on Lou Brock.
- 2:55:47Riven's pitch inside drives him back.
- 2:55:50One ball, two strikes.
- 2:55:56We've got to win this one. We win this one.
- 2:55:58The World Series opens on Wednesday against the New York Yankees.
- 2:56:03The pitch, Brock takes it in there.
- 2:56:05Strike three call.
- 2:56:09Riven gets his second strike out.
- 2:56:12And Bill White will be the hitter.
- 2:56:16And what a big blow Bill had to drive in two in the sixth.
- 2:56:21In a home run off the left-hander, Will Hunter.
- 2:56:24White is two for four.
- 2:56:27The photographer's already around the Cardinal box, around Colonel Bush.
- 2:56:36Bill White is ready.
- 2:56:38One out. We're in the last of the eighth inning.
- 2:56:40The Cardinals lead nine to four.
- 2:56:43White takes a fastball inside.
- 2:56:51One million, 143,294 the Cardinals have drawn this year.
- 2:56:57The pitch to White.
- 2:56:58Line like a bullet out to deep center.
- 2:57:00Back goes Hickman. Way back and makes the catch.
- 2:57:04So we have two down.
- 2:57:11A home run by Kirk Flood to open the last of the eighth inning.
- 2:57:18Here's the captain, Kenny Boyer.
- 2:57:20The players tell us one of the most underrated ballplayers in the National League.
- 2:57:27Boyer, another tremendous season.
- 2:57:29Twenty-four home runs.
- 2:57:31He drove in a run in the fifth inning.
- 2:57:33Boyer today, with that big double, is one for two, and the pitch to him is a ball.
- 2:57:41Right-hander against a right-hander.
- 2:57:43We're in the last of the eighth inning.
- 2:57:47And the score here at Bush Stadium is nine to four.
- 2:57:51Rybant is ready, and the pitch to Boyer.
- 2:57:54Fastball in there in the inside corner, the count one and one.
- 2:58:00Interesting interviews to follow the ball game with Harry Carrey.
- 2:58:04In the dugout and in the dressing room.
- 2:58:06So wherever you may be, hang on.
- 2:58:08Two outs, last of the eighth.
- 2:58:10One-one count to Boyer.
- 2:58:12The pitch, swung on and fouled back into the screen.
- 2:58:18Simmons and Siscoe started, neither around.
- 2:58:21Kirk went four and a third plus two hitters, gave up three runs, seven hits, struck out none, and walked one.
- 2:58:27A windblown double led to his downfall.
- 2:58:30Gibson has been brilliant in relief.
- 2:58:32Siscoe started, gave up four runs, seven hits, and four innings plus three.
- 2:58:36Walked three and struck out none.
- 2:58:38Casey Stengel, since then, has used four pitchers.
- 2:58:43The one-two pitch on its way to Kenny Boyer, with two down in the eighth.
- 2:58:48Over but low, and the count holds at two-two.
- 2:58:54No one has left the ballpark yet.
- 2:58:59Philadelphia upended Cincinnati, a win here in the Cardinals for the first time in 18 years.
- 2:59:05We'll have a pennant.
- 2:59:06The pitch to Boyer, crossfire outside, just missing three and two.
- 2:59:19Harry Carey standing by near the box down to the right of the dugout.
- 2:59:27The three-two pitch to Boyer is ball four, over but low.
- 2:59:30So Boyer walks with two down here in the last of the eighth inning.
- 2:59:43Dick Grode will be the hitter.
- 2:59:45Grode bounced to the first baseman and a double to right center scored a run,
- 2:59:52has struck out and grounded out with a pitcher getting an assist in the second baseman,
- 2:59:59Klaus, making the play.
- 3:00:01Cardinals nine, New York Mets four, last of the eighth, two down.
- 3:00:08Grode the hitter.
- 3:00:16Ken Boyer is on first base.
- 3:00:19They change balls, no activity in the Cardinal bullpen.
- 3:00:23Wednesday the big day if the Cardinals and Bob Gibson can get three outs in the ninth inning,
- 3:00:29and as we look ahead it'll be Roy McMillan, Joe Christopher, and Jim Hickman,
- 3:00:36two, three, and four in the order for the New York Mets.
- 3:00:40Grode trying to get some more swings and hits a pop-up off the right field side,
- 3:00:44down the right field line, back goes Cranepool coming on and unable to make the catches.
- 3:00:50Christopher as he runs into the bullpen down the right field line in foul territory.
- 3:01:14Two down here in the last of the eighth inning, one strike on Dick Grode, Boyer is at first.
- 3:01:22Cardinals leading nine to four.
- 3:01:25Ryvon is ready, he's at the belt in the pitch, hung on and nub foul off to the left.
- 3:01:33Cardinals took a one-nothing lead on a double by McCarver and a single by Shannon in the second.
- 3:01:38The Mets came back to tie it on a home run by Smith in the fourth.
- 3:01:43Then went ahead by two.
- 3:01:46In the fifth inning is McMillan doubled in two.
- 3:01:50In the fifth the Cardinals came bouncing back with three runs,
- 3:01:54and three in the sixth come from behind club all year long.
- 3:01:59Two strikes on Grode, the cross-fire is outside and it's one of two.
- 3:02:05Not only in the back against the runner, Boyer at first base is Cranepool.
- 3:02:11Cardinals on top by five.
- 3:02:15Right-hander Ryvon is ready.
- 3:02:17The one-two pitch to Grode.
- 3:02:20Over but low and the count goes to 2-2.
- 3:02:25Heroes in the game, well, hell, you could find almost everyone.
- 3:02:28White, two RBIs, Boyer one, Grode, McCarver one each and Shannon two.
- 3:02:34From Dow Maxville, a fellow who had to start because of the injury to Javier with two big RBIs.
- 3:02:422-2 count, now to the right-handed hitter, Grode.
- 3:02:45Two down the pitch, he's swung on and popped up.
- 3:02:48Here's Gonda the catcher coming back, he's under the ball and goes in a circle and it lands fair.
- 3:02:53No, it goes foul, they say, just foul.
- 3:02:57Looked like it kicked up some chalk and landed eight feet to the right of the plate.
- 3:03:03It went in a complete circle and the ball kicked up some chalk,
- 3:03:08but it was the chalk on the extreme front portion of the left-handed hitting batter's box.
- 3:03:15So it's a foul ball.
- 3:03:18Two balls and two strikes.
- 3:03:23Harry Carrey getting set to send you an interview and bring you also the ninth inning of play-by-play
- 3:03:30down right next to the Cardinal dugout.
- 3:03:35Two balls, two strikes, two out.
- 3:03:37Last of the eight, cards on top by five, the pitch.
- 3:03:40Swung on, lined out into right field.
- 3:03:42The right fielder, Christopher, goes back.
- 3:03:44The ball is up against the wall.
- 3:03:46Here is Boyer around second to third.
- 3:03:48Grode goes into second.
- 3:03:49Boyer holds it third and it's a double for Dick Grode.
- 3:03:52Kurt Flood open up with a home run.
- 3:04:04Brock struck out.
- 3:04:05White skied to center.
- 3:04:08Boyer walked here in the eighth inning and Grode has just doubled.
- 3:04:12Runners at second and third.
- 3:04:14Here's Tim McCarver.
- 3:04:20McCarver looked as though McCarver would get one out of here in the sixth, but it hit the screen.
- 3:04:29He's two for three, driven in a run.
- 3:04:33Here comes manager Casey Stengel.
- 3:04:46Ring lock on in the ball game, Stengel comes out.
- 3:04:52So coming out of the ball game will be Dennis Rybant.
- 3:04:55He came on in the seventh, retired the side one, two, three.
- 3:05:00Now he comes out of the ball game.
- 3:05:03So Rybant has pitched one in, two third, plus two hitters innings.
- 3:05:13And the two runners on base, he of course will be responsible for in the event they eventually score.
- 3:05:23So McCarver will have to face the left-hander Ron Locke.
- 3:05:46So Ron Locke comes out in relief.
- 3:05:53Left-hander.
- 3:05:57Locke was born in Wakefield, Rhode Island, resides in Schenick, Rhode Island.
- 3:06:05We're still in the last of the eighth inning.
- 3:06:10The Cardinals win this ball game, won't have finished.
- 3:06:13They will have won their 27th ball game by losing only 11 since August 24th.
- 3:06:21And at that time the Redbirds were 11 games behind.
- 3:06:33Dick Grohl will be at second.
- 3:06:35Ken Boyer talking now with Vern Benson is down at third base.
- 3:06:38Tim McCarver today doubled in the second, bounced to the mound in the fourth,
- 3:06:44walked in the fifth, and doubled to right in the sixth.
- 3:06:49He was eventually hung up and run down.
- 3:06:52I want to remind you the St. Louis football Cardinals defeated Washington 23 to 17 today.
- 3:07:01Talk about pressure, pressure on the players, but what about the pressure on the umpires?
- 3:07:06Eddie Vargo, Al Forman, Bill Joukowsky, and Shags Crawford, what a job they've done today.
- 3:07:18Tim McCarver, the hitter with two down here in the last of the eighth inning, the Cardinals leading by five.
- 3:07:26Winding and pitching is Ron Locke.
- 3:07:28Fastball popped up and back out of play.
- 3:07:34And by May our man in Cincinnati reporting with the good news that Jim Bunning rolled to a victory
- 3:07:42as Philadelphia ripped Cincinnati 10 to nothing.
- 3:07:47Harry Carrey downstairs set to bring you the ninth inning of play-by-play.
- 3:07:51Jerry Gross standing by up here in the booth.
- 3:07:55Locke's pitch to McCarver.
- 3:07:57Fastball that's up high, one and one.
- 3:08:03Bob Gibson in the ball game in relief of Kurt Simmons shooting for his 19th victory.
- 3:08:09He'll be pitching that ninth inning.
- 3:08:13Locke is ready.
- 3:08:14The one-one pitch to McCarver just outside for ball two, missed with a breaking ball.
- 3:08:26Locke is 5'11.
- 3:08:35The Mets have been tough.
- 3:08:36They've won 24 ball games against the top four teams in the National League this year.
- 3:08:41The pitch now to McCarver.
- 3:08:43Swung on, hit past the mound, down towards second.
- 3:08:45It's through, on into center, makes it.
- 3:08:47In to score comes Boyer.
- 3:08:49In to score from second is Groves.
- 3:08:52And the Cardinals now have taken the lead 11 to 4.
- 3:09:16Redbirds have added three here in the eighth inning, and don't go away, it's not over yet.
- 3:09:21Locke out on the mound, has just had a left-hander drilling up the middle.
- 3:09:27It's 11 to 4.
- 3:09:28The pitch to the right-hander, Shannon, is swung on and missed.
- 3:09:34What a day for McCarver, three RBIs.
- 3:09:42The first pennant in 18 years.
- 3:09:52And look at the smiles in the Cardinal box.
- 3:09:56The one-strike pitch to Shannon, it's hung on, lying to deep left field, back goes Altman, way back, then comes in a bit and makes the catch.
- 3:10:03To retire the side here in the eighth inning.
- 3:10:06The ball died, but the Cardinals didn't die in the eighth.
- 3:10:10In the eighth inning, the Redbirds come up with three runs on three base hits, no errors, one runner left on.
- 3:10:20And at the end of eight innings with three outs to go for a pennant, the score, the Cardinals 11, the New York Mets 4.
- 3:10:30Particular about taste? You bet I'm particular, and my Pellmels prove it.
- 3:10:40You bet I'm particular, and my Pellmels prove it.
- 3:10:45You hear it everywhere. Why? Because Pellmels natural mildness means just one thing, smooth, pleasing flavor.
- 3:10:54Particular people take particular pleasure in the good taste of Pellmels.
- 3:11:03The flavors blended over, under, around them prove to bring that particular good taste to you.
- 3:11:11So get particular pleasure like particular people do in the good taste of Pellmels.
- 3:11:19Be particular, smoke a long cigarette that's long on flavor.
- 3:11:24Buy Pellmel famous cigarettes, outstanding, and they are mired from the American Tobacco Company.
- 3:11:36This is Jerry Gross back at Bush Stadium. Bob Gibson needs three outs to go.
- 3:11:41Now down to the playing field, here's Harry Carrey.
- 3:11:45This is Harry Carrey, and now down in the Cardinal box, Roy McMillan leading off the first pitch as a strike call.
- 3:11:51Cardinals leading 11 to 4. Top half of the ninth inning, three outs away from the National League pennant.
- 3:11:57McMillan fouls a pitch back, strike two.
- 3:12:00Wow, we thought it was exciting upstairs in the booth.
- 3:12:03We're down here now where we're right among the fans.
- 3:12:06We're sitting in Gussie Bush's box right behind the Cardinal dugout.
- 3:12:10Roy McMillan the batter, two strikes and nothing. Bob Gibson delivers the pitch high and inside.
- 3:12:18Gibson would win his 19th game of the year.
- 3:12:21The Cardinals with an 11 to 4 lead here in the top of the ninth.
- 3:12:27Gibson gets set, into the windup he goes, and here's the pitch.
- 3:12:32High, ball two, and that evens it up. Two balls, two strikes.
- 3:12:37Mayor Ray Tucker, Mrs. Tucker sitting right in front of me here.
- 3:12:43August A. Bush Jr., president of the St. Louis Cardinals, and his wife, August the third and his wife.
- 3:12:50Here's a pitch high and inside.
- 3:12:53Three balls, two strikes.
- 3:12:56On McMillan, the Cardinals with a seven-run lead.
- 3:13:02How sweet it is.
- 3:13:04Here's the pitch. Ball, he walked it.
- 3:13:08So McMillan starts the ninth with a base on ball.
- 3:13:13You know, the use of Gibson here in relief would indicate that when the World Series opens here Wednesday afternoon,
- 3:13:21Ray Sadecki probably will be the Cardinal pitcher.
- 3:13:24And that might be a good development at that because in this small ballpark, small and right field,
- 3:13:32and the Yankees with left-handed power, the Cardinals would probably prefer to use southpaws here in St. Louis.
- 3:13:39Whereas at Yankee Stadium with a big ballpark, it doesn't make much difference.
- 3:13:43So here's Joe Christopher.
- 3:13:46Christopher hitting 3-0-1 for the season, right-handed batter.
- 3:13:50Runner at first base, nobody outThe Phillies wallop, the Reds tend to nothing.
- 3:13:55Now the stretch, and the pitch to Christopher.
- 3:13:59There's the strike-off, one strike and no ball.
- 3:14:03The Cardinals with them three outs of their first pennants since 1946.
- 3:14:12Joe Christopher, a little unhappy.
- 3:14:17From the Virgin Isles, and I know that Armed Forces is carrying our broadcast throughout the Caribbean
- 3:14:22as well as throughout the world today.
- 3:14:26There's a stretch, and the pitch is on the way.
- 3:14:29Christopher swings and misses, strike two.
- 3:14:33Boy, I don't know if you can hear us here in the, what an excited frenzy this crowd is in.
- 3:14:38Better than 30,000 people sitting in on the winning of a pennant.
- 3:14:43And what a hectic two weeks we've had.
- 3:14:46The stretch, the pitch, Christopher pops it up.
- 3:14:50In foul territory, Bill White, one out.
- 3:14:54One away here on the top of the ninth is Jim Hickman, who used to be in the Cardinal Organization.
- 3:15:05Two more outs to go, and the almost impossible achievement of the St. Louis Cardinals will have been realized.
- 3:15:14Six and a half back with about 12 games to go, about to clinch the pennant.
- 3:15:21One out, one on. Hickman the batter.
- 3:15:25Gibson gets ready to pitch, and it's a little bit outside.
- 3:15:29McCarver behind the plate, a strong wind blowing out, and several hitters have taken advantage of it.
- 3:15:37Nothing else really matters on that scoreboard.
- 3:15:40Here's the stretch, and the pitch to Hickman.
- 3:15:44He takes it inside, ball two.
- 3:15:46Two balls, no strikes.
- 3:15:48McMillan at first, one out.
- 3:15:51The ball game in the top of the ninth.
- 3:15:54Bob Gibson, who replaced Kurt Simmons in the sixth.
- 3:15:58Boyer at third.
- 3:16:00Groted short.
- 3:16:02Maxville, who's done a great job substituting for Javier at second today.
- 3:16:06White at firstThe pitch to Hickman is a strike at the knees.
- 3:16:10And this crowd is roaring with every pitch now.
- 3:16:14We're down at the field level, and we will later be in the clubhouse.
- 3:16:21So stay tuned. Here's the pitch.
- 3:16:24Ball three is high. Three balls, one strike.
- 3:16:31One away. Right-handed batter digging in.
- 3:16:36Bob Gibson gets set. Jim Hickman the batter.
- 3:16:40Let's turn it over, six-four-three and out.
- 3:16:43Strike, no ball for, inside.
- 3:16:46So Johnny Keene coming out of the dugout now as right-handed batter comes up there.
- 3:16:53Charlie Smith.
- 3:16:55And it's going to be Barney Schultz, the knuckleballer, coming in.
- 3:17:00Bob Gibson, a wild tonight, today rather.
- 3:17:04But he just pitched Friday evening and lost one to nothing.
- 3:17:10So if he's not as sharp as usual, there's good reason for it.
- 3:17:16We have runners at first and second, one out.
- 3:17:19Barney Schultz, a knuckleballer, coming in.
- 3:17:22The wind blowing strongly, and that's considered good for a knuckleball pitcher.
- 3:17:29The Phillies won from the Reds today, and that's what has caused this development,
- 3:17:36where the Cardinals needing two outs to clinch a pennant.
- 3:17:39Bob Gibson getting a big hand. Listen.
- 3:18:02Barney Schultz, one of the reasons why the Cardinals are in this enviable position that they are at this moment.
- 3:18:09This fellow has been fantastic since he joined the Cardinals on August the 1st.
- 3:18:15A knuckleballer who's been credited with something like 12 or 13 saves already.
- 3:18:20Veteran at age 38, seemingly his Major League career was over.
- 3:18:28Went to Jacksonville hoping that some team might need a little help and if he did well, might bring him up.
- 3:18:35Little dreaming that it would be the Cardinals who had had him in spring training.
- 3:18:40And here he is, Barney Schultz.
- 3:18:43And maybe it is poetic at that, that Barney Schultz, who perhaps has done as much if not more,
- 3:18:55plugging the biggest gap, weakness in the bullpen, to make the Cardinals drive possible.
- 3:19:01Perhaps it's only fitting that it should be Barney Schultz who gets the final two outs necessary for a pennant-winning victory.
- 3:19:09Charlie Smith up there, he homered earlier.
- 3:19:14He homered yesterday. He's hit 20 out of the ballpark.
- 3:19:17Runners are at first and second, a seven-run lead.
- 3:19:25Now the strike.
- 3:19:28Ready to pitch on the way.
- 3:19:30And Smith takes a strike.
- 3:19:34Fastball strike.
- 3:19:36One strike and no balls. Runners at first and second.
- 3:19:39A double play would end it all here.
- 3:19:43Boyer at third.
- 3:19:45Roe to chart.
- 3:19:47Baxman at second, White playing back at first.
- 3:19:49Here's a foul ball as Charlie Smith went after a low-knuckle ball.
- 3:19:55Two strikes and nothing.
- 3:20:00It takes two outs to be able to save.
- 3:20:05And Heiser-Busch first in the brewing industry and first in the National League.
- 3:20:11We need two outs to do that.
- 3:20:14Two strikes, no balls.
- 3:20:18Signal given.
- 3:20:20Barney Schultz, how can you be that cool, Barney?
- 3:20:24Takes his time, leans forward.
- 3:20:27From the belt, the pitch.
- 3:20:29And here it is.
- 3:20:31Torrance, to work it out.
- 3:20:40So Charlie Smith goes down swinging.
- 3:20:53Out here is Rod Kniell from Springfield, Missouri.
- 3:21:02Right-handed batter.
- 3:21:04Right in business down that way.
- 3:21:06I believe in the cement business or something, he'll be home in Springfield tonight.
- 3:21:11KMX, KMX FM, St. Louis.
- 3:21:13Out runners at first and second, one more out.
- 3:21:16And the Cardinals will have clinched the pennant.
- 3:21:19Barney Schultz gets ready.
- 3:21:21The stretch, the pitch, swings and it hits it.
- 3:21:27One strike, no ball.
- 3:21:29This crowd is besides itself.
- 3:21:41Vlad Fakarde, I just overheard saying the impossible really happened.
- 3:21:45Here's the pitch.
- 3:21:47It's a wild pitch, it's the Empire.
- 3:21:49The runners advance to second and third.
- 3:21:51Ed Borgo was in on that one.
- 3:21:53A knuckleball that hopped over McCarver's mitt.
- 3:21:58It'll be a pass ball.
- 3:22:00And runners are at second and third with two away, 11 to four in favor of the Cardinals.
- 3:22:06Rod Kniell the batter.
- 3:22:08In the ninth.
- 3:22:15Here comes Bill Joukowsky down from second base to see that Ed Borgo isn't hurt.
- 3:22:24Now all set.
- 3:22:28One ball, one strike.
- 3:22:37Now the signal given.
- 3:22:42And the windup by Barney Schultz, here's the pitch on the way.
- 3:22:46A ground ball, left field, two runs are going to score.
- 3:22:49And now it's an 11 to six ball game.
- 3:22:53Kniell singles to left.
- 3:22:55So that makes it 11 to six.
- 3:22:57Two out, one out to go, here's Ed Creedpool.
- 3:23:01Makes a one run, only one run, 11 to five.
- 3:23:05We're down here at the field level.
- 3:23:08Only one run scored as they played it safe.
- 3:23:12The Mets, Lou Brock fumbled the ball out there.
- 3:23:16But the runner at third base, Hickman, held on.
- 3:23:20So it is 11 to five in favor of the Cardinals.
- 3:23:24And here's Ed Creedpool.
- 3:23:27Top half of the ninth inning, the stretch.
- 3:23:30From the belt here's the pitch to Creedpool.
- 3:23:33It's a strike, a knuckle ball over the outside corner.
- 3:23:37One strike, a no ball.
- 3:23:48Two strikes, no ball. Ed Creedpool the batter.
- 3:23:51Runners at first and third, two away.
- 3:23:54The pitch, strike two called.
- 3:23:57Hit the outside corner at the knee.
- 3:24:00And the Cardinals, one quick.
- 3:24:02One more strike, come on.
- 3:24:04If you've never heard Mr. Gussie Bush excited,
- 3:24:07you just heard him over my shoulder.
- 3:24:10Two strikes, no ball.
- 3:24:13Runners at first and third, the Cardinals leading 11 to five.
- 3:24:18Johnny Keene about to bring the Redbirds their first punter since 1946.
- 3:24:25Two strikes, no ball.
- 3:24:29Listen to this crowd.
- 3:24:32Let's go! Get him out!
- 3:24:40Now the stretch. Ready, everybody standing up.
- 3:24:44The pitch, a high pop ball.
- 3:24:48The thrower's there.
- 3:24:50The Cardinals win the pennant!

- 3:25:09Mayhem on the field.
