- 2:58one Kobs and Rob will joy us a little bit later on to talk about
- 3:01what exactly is what makes his heartbeat when it comes to a classic country music,
- 3:07which is of course what to ninety six one airs, and also what
- 3:09brought him back to Charleston. And we're just going to get to know Rob
- 3:13a little bit. That'll be the last fifteen minutes or so of the program
- 3:15this morning, so we are looking forward to that. A few other things
- 3:20that we can we can touch on here as we're getting ready for our guests
- 3:24to call in. We have a few things that we can get to.
- 3:28First of all, I wanted to remind you of a job fair that we
- 3:32have coming up, and this is actually today, So this is something that
- 3:37you want to be to be aware of. There's a lot of locations around
- 3:39the state and the region that can help with this, but this is with
- 3:44a Genesis. Genesis affiliated nursing centers are hosting a job fair to recruit positions
- 3:47including r NS LPNs cena's clinical leadership and therapist. The fair will provide two
- 3:53options for job seekers learn about the job of a direct caregiver by speaking to
- 3:57a current caregiver or interview with a recruiter who can make a conditional job offer.
- 4:02The event is open for full Tom, part Tom and casual employees and
- 4:06attendees can enjoyed free food, drinks, and door prizes. The fair takes
- 4:11place today from noon until four o'clock at various locations across West Virginia. You
- 4:15can get more information by calling three zero four seven four one twenty three OZ
- 4:18two. That's three zero four seven to four one twenty three O two.
- 4:21But I can give you those locations here. We have a bunch of them
- 4:27locally, so I'm going to get through these again. It's for the Genesis
- 4:30affiliated Nursing Centers. This is a job fair that they're having today from twelve
- 4:33to four in our local area at the Cedar Ridge Center in Sissonville that is
- 4:38on Cedar Ridge Road. I'm not going to give the addresses for each of
- 4:41these out. If you need to find out more information, you can you
- 4:44can get over to that phone number three zero four seven four one twenty three
- 4:47h two. I'll also we'll put something up on social media so you can
- 4:50find them on there. You can go over to Facebook page at five AWC
- 4:54or WHS network on Facebook and we'll put the information up on there as well
- 4:58so you can find it. So the the job fair, it's going to
- 5:00take place at the Incissanville at the Cedar Ridge Center, at Dunbar at the
- 5:03Dunbar Center, and mar Met at the mar Met Center that's on Sutton Drive,
- 5:09and Putman County at the Putman Center when Saville Road, Tay's Valley Center
- 5:15in a hurricane on Popular Fork Road, and then in South Charleston on Lincoln
- 5:19Drive at the Valley Center going to take place there as well. For all
- 5:24of these locations for Genesis job affairs that you can find out more information.
- 5:29Once again, the phone number for that is three zero four seven four one
- 5:31twenty three two three zero four seven four one twenty three or two. Those
- 5:35will be taking place today starting at noon and going until four o'clock. So
- 5:41looking forward to to presenting that and for folks maybe if this works out for
- 5:47you again, this is for all kinds of things in the nursing center,
- 5:51in the in the nursing atmosphere when it comes to different job positions. So
- 5:56it is again for our ends lpn CNA's clinical leadership and therapists, and that
- 6:00will be the job fair that's going to be taking place today between twelve o'clock
- 6:04and four o'clock, So looking forward to that for you to be able to
- 6:08check out one that today. We also have a couple of things I wanted
- 6:13to let you know about here on the radio stations. With the weekend program
- 6:16that we have on WCHS during baseball season, a lot of times that doesn't
- 6:20get a chance to get deployed real well, you may not hear a lot
- 6:24of the afternoon programming that we have on WCHS during those times. So we've
- 6:28added some new programs recently and I wanted to I'm a big fan of the
- 6:32When I grew up listening to AM radio, I always listened to a lot
- 6:35of times at the nighttime. You listen to them the crazy overnight shows you
- 6:41know, had the Art Bell and similar type shows that are still around in
- 6:44some incarnation, but back in the eighties and the nineties these things were live,
- 6:48and we're really in their peak, and uh, different types of information
- 6:53shows. When I've circumvented the country twice driving and I'm always listening to AM
- 6:58radio when I've done that, and there's all kinds of shows. Of course,
- 7:00you have the RFD type things and and UH and reports like that.
- 7:03But I wanted to capture a little bit more of the uh, the quirkiness
- 7:06of AM radio's past, and so I wanted to cultivate some new programs.
- 7:11And I found a couple of new ones that were airing on the weekends now.
- 7:14One of them is called Radio of Yesterday, and that is a program
- 7:20that airs on Saturday mornings at two o'clock and then Sunday afternoons at two o'clock.
- 7:25And uh. Again, that show's not going to be heard a lot
- 7:27during the afternoons during baseball season because of the Reds. But this is a
- 7:30replay of what radio was. This is a replay of classic radio plays from
- 7:35like the thirties and the twenties and the forties. When you think of things
- 7:39like the Phantom and Zoro and stuff like that they do in some of those
- 7:43uh little mysteries like what Danny Webb does with Apples of Gold. These are
- 7:46similar types of stories to that, just old time radio stuff. A big
- 7:49fan of it, and so we've incorporated some of that programming on our weekends
- 7:53on WCHS. I've also added like a national geographic type of an animals show.
- 8:00It's called Animal Tales that precedes Chris Lawrence's show on the replay on Sunday
- 8:05afternoons, and that's just kind of a worldwide view of things that are going
- 8:07on in the animal kingdom. It's kind of a fun little show. And
- 8:11then we finally added another show. This one is more along the line of
- 8:13the Art Bell type thing. It's called Weird Tales that airs on Sunday nights
- 8:18at eleven. So if you're like me that used to listen to the radio
- 8:20going to bed at night, this is one of those types of shows I
- 8:22used to love to listen to. This is sort of like an in search
- 8:24of Art Bell type show, Unsolved Mysteries, a little bit of those things
- 8:28all mixed in together and talking about these things, and it's a fun shows.
- 8:33It presents a lot of fun information. And for me, the sum
- 8:37of these shows and adding them to our weekend programming creates a lot of that
- 8:41am type of atmosphere that we had, or that I had anyway when I
- 8:45was growing up in just some kind of interesting programming that we have on the
- 8:48weekends. Unfortunately, it looks like that we're going to miss our connection to
- 8:50talk about the wall that is coming through on Nitro. Let me give you
- 8:54some information about that. The Todd Taylor is the West Virginia state coordinator,
- 8:58and we've been unable to make a connection with him this morning. But the
- 9:03angle run for the Wall begins today Wednesday, May eighteenth, and it's coming
- 9:07from California and it's going to go through to Washington, d C. The
- 9:09first stop is at Valley Park in Hurricane and that's going to be on Wednesday
- 9:13for an overnight state. That's gonna be Wednesday of next week for an overnight
- 9:16stay, and then on Thursday the twenty fifth, it's a week from today.
- 9:18Actually today's Thursday night, Wednesday, So on Thursday the twenty fifth,
- 9:22a week from today, that platoon will escort the West Virginia and Vietnam Memorial
- 9:26from Valley Park to the Nitro Wars Museum, and the Nitro Wars Museum will
- 9:30serve as the new permanent home for that traveling memorial and all of those,
- 9:35all of the circumstances around that starts today. The Wall is leading California today,
- 9:39it will be in West Virginia headed towards Hurricane pardon me. On Wednesday
- 9:43of next week and then on Thursday of next week it's going to move over
- 9:46to the Nitro's War Museum over in Nitro and we will get some more information
- 9:50on about that. Unfortunately we missed Todd Taylor today, but next week we'll
- 9:54get some more information on about this as it starts to come through and looking
- 9:58forward to it's permanent home being at the Nitro Wars Museum in Nitro now and
- 10:03we're going to find out more about that as we get closer to the event
- 10:07that's coming up next week. Don't forget that five eighty Elive is presented to

- 13:22HS the Voice of Charleston. I am Dale Cooper and joining me now in
- 13:26studio. It is Jeff Jenkins from the w CHS and Metro News newsroom.
- 13:31Good morning, Jeff awre you doing this morning? Well, how you doing?
- 13:33Man? I'm doing okay. You know, Dave doesn't take a lot
- 13:35of time off, but when he does take time off, it tends to
- 13:39be a little bit in cluster. So we have a day this week and
- 13:41then we have a regular vacation next week. I mean, everybody needs a
- 13:43vacation. So just sliding in here and figuring out the things that we're going
- 13:48to talk about. And it's kind of a busy newsday. We have a
- 13:50lot of things that are going on. But there has been some news breaking
- 13:52about the health of our conn Kune Commissioner Harper. We know a little bit
- 13:56of information about that from the statement release less. Yeah, so a long
- 14:00time County Commission President, Kik Carper. They released the statement last night saying
- 14:05that he was had some personal health issues and that he is being taken care
- 14:11of by CMC and he had the total confidence in CMC. And then we've
- 14:18learned today that Commissioner Carper is undergoing open heart surgery today. Okay, So
- 14:24our thoughts and obviously prayers are with the Commission President and hope everything, you
- 14:31know, pray everything goes okay with him on the open heart surgery. We
- 14:35were actually in some contact with him this morning and he did confirm that he
- 14:41was, you know, he was undergoing open heart surgery today, so that
- 14:46would be at CMC Memorial obviously. So um, so that's you know,
- 14:50that's what we have and in hope we will get a good report on a
- 14:54condition that we can pass that along too, maybe later today. It's always
- 14:58tough when reporting on the health of our public officials because you know, there's
- 15:01a certain lines you don't want to cross. You want to make sure you
- 15:03get the right information out there, so we only go with the most reliable
- 15:05information and what we know is true. So that's that's what we know to
- 15:09the extent so far, and these things are always a unfortunate uh, touch
- 15:13and go for the most part. Something else. I was going to ask
- 15:16you about what we had you down. While we had you down down,
- 15:20I'm sorry down here, UM, I wanted to just touch base on the
- 15:24old Saint Albans Junior Hut that's going to be coming down. I know that's
- 15:26a story that we covered yesterday that has a little bit of a I used
- 15:28to play basketball over there. I never went there. I went to Hayes
- 15:31when I went when I lived in Saint Albans, so they were like our
- 15:33rivals. But I used to go to that school a lot so for different
- 15:37intermural activities, play basketball, different things like that. So that building's coming
- 15:39down, man. So those in Saint Albans obviously know that it hasn't been
- 15:43a school for like thirty years, right, and so but it's really different.
- 15:48If I've learned anything from the Peyton's Tom and Harvey, is that you
- 15:52know, you know, property, Uh, it's maybe it's a little easier
- 15:56maybe property like that, but it's it's not easy to demo a place,
- 16:02right, I mean in different things. So over the years, obviously the
- 16:04school board owned it and then you know, they passed along to someone else,
- 16:07and but it never never got torn down. Now from understand other properties
- 16:11it used to be the playground and some other things. I mean those were
- 16:15kind of other pieces of property on the back side of that we're sold,
- 16:18you know, but this is actually just the building itself. And so now
- 16:22JB. Mccusky and the d EPJ, the State Auditors Office, Jbcusky,
- 16:25State Uditor. You know, they have a new program that a lot of
- 16:27municipalits have been taken advantage of some with some money to demolish, you know,
- 16:33to take down buildings, and so this is going to fall under that,
- 16:36and so it's going to happen in June. They're gonna move the asbestis
- 16:38first, which is going to do that, and then they'll tear it down.
- 16:41Now, I think i'd ask I had asked h saying always mare Scott
- 16:45James previously about that property, and he was hopeful that there'll just be some
- 16:48residential homes, you know, maybe a handful of residential homes that will be
- 16:53built on that property. So it will be coming down. And it's a
- 16:57high profile place, you know, right there Long can Terrace in Saint Albans,
- 17:02and so yeah, it'll be coming down in the near view. It's
- 17:03been, isn't ire. Yeah, there's no doubt that it needs to.
- 17:07My memory of it is forty years ago, of course, so it wasn't
- 17:11in quite a pad of shape then. Um, I mean I've driven by
- 17:14it since then. It definitely needs to come down. And I'm glad that
- 17:15we have these, uh these programs to get rid of some of these uh
- 17:18these structures and buildings that because of the day and certain communities they really can
- 17:22be quite bad. Well, you know now from eastern Kontall County, so
- 17:23years ago, you know, the old East Bank Junior High which was previously
- 17:27the East Bank High School, was torn down right along Route sixty one,
- 17:33and so you know there's a basically a big green lot there now and has
- 17:37been for years, and there's a Dollar General there kind of where kind of
- 17:41where the building used to be, but the box side of it. So
- 17:44there was a separate building there that was built some time after the Junior High
- 17:48was there. It was the it was the art room, and it was
- 17:51the band room, and it became like the city hall. It became east
- 17:56Bank City Hall, which is it is today. So uh yeah, you
- 17:59hate this. You know, these buildings have to come down. So this
- 18:02is you know, this is what's going to happen in Saint Albans and uh
- 18:04you know, sometime later this year should be able to see it come down.
- 18:07Jeff Chiggins from the wcchs Or radio newsroom. I'll cut you loose here
- 18:11in just a second because I know that hum, you've got stuff to do
- 18:14as well, but always have to check your temperature. Just a little bit
- 18:17on Reds Baseball, you know Reds uh first of all, and being the
- 18:21home of the Reds here, so we have this is a little bit of
- 18:22a fan service for our listeners as well, because if you haven't been listening
- 18:26that the Reds aren't great, Okay, and we knew they weren't going to
- 18:29be great, but even when we're talking the other day, they've probably been
- 18:32a little better than what we expect that they would be. Not meaning that
- 18:34they don't give up huge endings sometimes and bad defense sometimes and things like that,
- 18:38but they've been able to pull together what pieces they do have that are
- 18:41good more often than not. And you know, they're four or five six
- 18:45games out of first place in a fairly weak division. But the difference between
- 18:49them and others is they got some people pushing from behind, you know,
- 18:52down in the minors. Yeah, there's a reason to be optimistic, I
- 18:55think, and excited to watch them. Now. They're going to get into
- 18:57a pretty heavy pretty got the Yankees for three games. It's been nice if
- 19:02they could beat Colorado yesterday in that series, but uh, yeah, they
- 19:06got the Yankees for three games. But they're going to have their new city
- 19:08connect uniforms on Yeah, what do you think about those? About time with
- 19:12them? Okay, well run, I'm okay with limited run. I wouldn't
- 19:17want me. They don't. They don't like The softball uniforms at the Rockies
- 19:19were oh man, those are horrible. Yeah, and they were. Yes,
- 19:22yeah, those are absolutely horrible. I think Weekly said there that might
- 19:26be the worst professional sports uniform he's ever seen, which is saying a lot.
- 19:30But they were very, very bad. Exactly. Yeah, they're not
- 19:32that bad. They're different looking, but they're not all that bad. I
- 19:34did also want to mention Coop just the in congratulations to the news team.
- 19:38Yes, I want to bring that if and to you too. Wow.
- 19:44Then well, you know, the Edward R. Murrow Regional Awards came out
- 19:48yesterday and so um and you know, just a good hard work by the
- 19:53news team. Um. So we are recognized for three Edward R. Murrow
- 20:00Regional Awards. And so our region includes North Carolina, South Carolina, North
- 20:03Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, and West Virginia. And so
- 20:08in the small market radio category, uh, we were for breaking news.
- 20:15We won the awards for Breaking News, which was actually the August fifteenth flood,
- 20:18the US Route sixty flood we called it, you know, and it
- 20:22broke that morning Campbell's Creek, USUS Creek count in hollow Up in Fat County.
- 20:26We were literally out in that flood. You were out in that flood.
- 20:30Yeah, And so that that happened. Uh, And so that was
- 20:33was our breaking news entry and it was recognized with the Murrow Regional Murrow and
- 20:37then U the the Morning News again with a long run of newscasts Regional Edward
- 20:45Murroughs. And it's got a couple of national where it's got one national Murrow
- 20:49too with the Morning News. And then overall Excellence, which is everything that
- 20:55WCHS does five ad WCHS does. We've we've won the national award on that
- 21:00couple, not overall nationally, just reasonally, yeah, just reasonally, I
- 21:03think twice. And so that would be thinking the consensus in the news room,
- 21:07if you could win a national for overall excellence, that would be really
- 21:11really nice. Yeah, that's kind of where I'm That's where I would like
- 21:14to hang that honestly. But but we're very thankful, very thankful to be
- 21:18able to work here, very thankful for our community, which I think you
- 21:25know appreciates local news. Once local news. I mean, they're very good
- 21:29television stations here that do a good job on local news. You know,
- 21:33our company has always invested in local news and it's been a trademark of the
- 21:38company. H And so someone asking, you know, there's a question about
- 21:42AM radios going to right away earlier this week and everything, but I still
- 21:47think people are going to want local news. You gotta have the local news.
- 21:48And there was a bipartisan bill that was just uh forwarded yesterday that is
- 21:53the save AM Radio thing, And there's a lot of e S stuff that
- 21:56goes into that with emergency services, but it's free programming that's free to receive
- 22:03for consumers and it's an important information gathering step for that and the CHS has
- 22:07served that mission for for years and years and years here. And as I
- 22:10said at the w vva's when we got our our outstate our News Talk Station
- 22:15of the Year award locally or for West Virginia. UM, the thing that
- 22:18strikes me about what we do here is you guys work so much on metro
- 22:22news as well, and sometimes the entity is obviously combined. But when I
- 22:26pull out just what you do on WCHS. You start the morning news an
- 22:29hour earlier on WCHS than what it comes on normal and we have five news
- 22:33or updates, headline updates in the five o'clock hour. You take all of
- 22:37those updates plus all the local news that you could do over twenty local newscasts
- 22:41to day. And I know there are newspaper, TV stations and stuff like
- 22:44that, but you're not getting live local newscasts twenty times a day with any
- 22:48of those other sources. That's just what we do, and you guys do
- 22:49it better than anybody. Well, you know, it's been a great this
- 22:52station even before we owned it, WVRC Media owned it. I mean,
- 22:56this station was known for its local news. Now and it's kind of more
- 22:59coe. It's got a peabody. It's got a Peabody's got yeah, I
- 23:02mean, yes, what I mean, it's got a peabody from the fifties
- 23:04from yeah, from reporting overseas, the reporter that reported overseas, and what
- 23:10a great, what a great tradition here. And uh, you know,
- 23:15I was looking forward, you know, I mean we're only like four years
- 23:17away from our one hundredth anniversary, you know, I know, nineteen twenty
- 23:21twenty seven. Man, it's right around the corner. I just did that.
- 23:22I just did the ninetieth a couple of years ago, seems like,
- 23:25and now we're getting ready for the hundredth. That's incredible. Yeah, and
- 23:26so anyway, so thanks thanks to our listeners. Thank you for and we've
- 23:30got a lot of loyal listeners absolutely and uh several of them called the newsroom
- 23:34and we're glad that they do for information sometimes and so but anyway, Uh,
- 23:40hey, got a newscast at Tanna, Jeff, I appreciate it.
- 23:44Thanks Jeff Jakins from the WHS in the Metro News news room. We're gonna
- 23:48need to take a break. Let me get a couple of text messages.
- 23:51Uh in the hopper first, Britt mcquenee will be what this when we come
- 23:53back? First of all, when is wch's gonna get new episodes of the
- 23:57Sounds Good to Be Music Show? Hey, good question. I think that
- 24:00this past weekend was the first rerun that we've ran consecutively. And Aristotle,
- 24:04we had a recent unfortunate death in our company. The host of that program,
- 24:08Aristotle had been covering for the illness of the person that tragically passed away,
- 24:15and so last week we were unable to get a new episode up.
- 24:17He will have a new episode this week, so it will be a new
- 24:18episode of Sounds Good to Me Saturday morning at eight o'clock. And then Aristotle
- 24:22will also be on Hotline Friday afternoon at five thirty for his edition of Sounds
- 24:26Good West Virginia, which is a shorter program. It's like eight minutes that
- 24:30we do towards the end of the program on Hotline where he highlights local artists
- 24:34and also venues they might want to get out to and get out to this
- 24:37weekend. And also I'm getting some texts about Commissioner Carper. We're waiting for
- 24:48information on his health and in various aspects on that to be confirmed. We
- 24:52need to take a break. When we come back, Brian McWhiney will join
- 24:56me. We're going to talk a lot about some of the stories that he's
- 24:57covering. We're going to read visit the debt ceiling debate just briefly, and

- 28:11We still have plenty of stuff that we need to get to. This
- 28:14uh, this morning including Brad mccahiney is joining us from wv metro News dot
- 28:18com, where Brad's been busy at work as he usually is. I got
- 28:22to see Brad briefly a couple of a couple of weeks ago. It was
- 28:26nice to run into you again, Brad. Brad, how are you doing
- 28:27this morning, Coop? I'm doing great. How are you? I'm doing
- 28:30well. You know, my my time gets so compressed that I knew you
- 28:33were on five ATY Live recently, but I thought it was it was the
- 28:37end of last week and didn't realize it was just two two days ago.
- 28:38So thanks for coming back on the program. Oh you know, there's there's
- 28:42so much news, and we'll cover a whole different realm of news and you
- 28:47and I will talk about it in a different way. Well that's that's a
- 28:49good point. I mean, see, he always makes me feel a little
- 28:52better about my mistakes, so I appreciate that. So several things we want
- 28:56to talk about. I guess, um, let's talk a little bit about
- 29:00I guess the updated information for our local senators when our local representatives. I
- 29:04guess when it comes to the debt ceiling battle as far as our West Virginia
- 29:10contingent goes, Obviously, the House has already done more or less done their
- 29:15side of things. We're waiting to see what happens with negotiations here. But
- 29:18where do we stand, both from the inside of West Virginia looking out and
- 29:23what that means for us here in the state. Well, you know,
- 29:26as a nation, we are creeping ever closer to that January, sorry,
- 29:32June first X date that they call it where the country will run out of
- 29:37money to pay for its current debt, to pay down those bills, and
- 29:44that potentially could cause a financial catastrophe potentially globally, so not great. But
- 29:52what West Virginia's senators and delegates largely have said is that they believe that these
- 29:57negotiations that are now particularly taking place between President Biden and his advisors and Speaker
- 30:04McCarthy and his advisors, that they will bear fruit and that the United States
- 30:11will avoid this catastrophe. Of course, you know, the most outspoken,
- 30:15the most high profile of West Virginia's delegation have been Senator Mansion and Senator Capitau.
- 30:22Capitau participated and offered a few words yesterday as part of a group gathering
- 30:30of Senate and House GOP representatives. They gathered out front of Capitol Hill and
- 30:37and Senator Capito said, look, it's it's should have started, should have
- 30:41started talking between the White House and the House GOP majority weeks and weeks and
- 30:51weeks ago, but now it is definitely time to get serious. What the
- 30:56House GOOP offered, of course, was they passed a will, but would
- 31:02curtail the government spending in future years, So two twenty four spending would have
- 31:08to return back to two twenty two levels, sort of, you know,
- 31:15holding it flat regarding what had been increased spending somewhat related to COVID, and
- 31:21then holding the spending increases to one percent a year over the next decade.
- 31:26So she largely agrees with that. Senator Capitau does believes it's time to get
- 31:30that spending reigned in. Senator Mansion has made similar remarks. You know,
- 31:37it's discretionary spending. They don't get into a lot of detail beyond that,
- 31:42the idea seems to be, you're not curtailing military spending. I don't think
- 31:48there's a political appetite to to curtail the spending on social security or or you
- 31:56know, the government run healthcare programs. So what does that leave That's that's
- 32:01the big question. And of course Congressman Miller, who was on talk line,
- 32:07Carol Miller, another Republican right there with him, saying it's time to
- 32:12curtail the government spending. And yes, she believes that future spending should be
- 32:16a negotiating point along with the payment of current debt. And I don't know
- 32:22that that Congressman Mooney has chimed in for a while, but that's about where
- 32:25he was on the matter as well. I find that these are always so
- 32:30interesting because you can go depending on the last time that an officeholder from the
- 32:36same party that is currently in contention was in office, you could do searches
- 32:42for what they said during that time and it's uh, basically one hundred and
- 32:45eighty degree different on what the negotiation stands is have you heard I known,
- 32:51probably not from especially when they're hoping their negotiation negotiating from a point of strength,
- 32:57as the Republicans in the House feel like that they're doing right now.
- 32:59But have you caught any whiff at all on this idea to just get rid
- 33:04of this debate, get rid of the debt ceiling, and debate altogether,
- 33:07that it's a it's kind of a redundancy, and it holds no function other
- 33:10than to gum up to the government. The Argina Post had a front paid
- 33:15story today acknowledging that there are, you know, these high level negotiations between
- 33:22President Biden and Speaker McCarthy and their representatives, but alluding to the possibility that
- 33:30President Biden could could, in reference to the Fourteenth Amendment, say that that,
- 33:40of course, the United States always has to make good on its on
- 33:46its debts and and potentially um use that aspect of the fourteenth Amendment to ignore
- 33:54code, which refers to the requirement to take a vote on meeting death ceiling
- 34:00requirements. I'm trying to find Sorry, I'm a little mumbling because I'm trying
- 34:06to find the phrasing about this fourteenth Amendment possibility. But some some simate Democrats
- 34:12are suggesting Biden ought to go that way and cite the Constitution rather than federal
- 34:17code to just circumvent Congress. Essentially, It'll be interesting to see how that
- 34:22shakes out. My personal opinion is, and I don't care who the officeholder
- 34:27is, whoever the opposing party is, it always feels like theatrics. To
- 34:30me, they don't hold the same thing seriously when they're in power. It's
- 34:35just a theatrical negotiating tactic. I think this should just be jettisoned. It
- 34:38just seems to really play no purpose set for this type of fearmongering. UM,
- 34:45I don't see where it serves any real point. I'm not an expert,
- 34:46but that's kind of my opinion on the thing. I get kind of
- 34:49sick of the rigamar role of it. You can check out more as Brad
- 34:52covers that story though at w metronews dot com. W metronews dot com.
- 34:55I wanted to touch base before we cut your loose, Brad. When the
- 34:58WU budget discus relatively drastic measures that are coming from WVU having to implement the
- 35:06cost cutting measures they need to reduce expenses through various means. They're going to
- 35:08freeze when hiring, travel restrictions, potential budget restrictions as well. The university
- 35:14diversity plans to review all the academic programs to identify areas for potential consolidation or
- 35:20elimination, which sounds a little bit odd, and they want to reprioritize their
- 35:23core mission. All of that just goes to say that they need to find
- 35:27a way to save some money. Oh man, well, you know,
- 35:32yeah, the major issue with WVU is they have declining student enrollment and they
- 35:37have calculated their trend toward lessons student enrollment, and you know, they think
- 35:43that they may be out seventy some million dollars under budget here in the common
- 35:49few years. So they need to begin to prepare. And so they've got
- 35:53to do something on the cost side, which you know, the largest cost
- 35:58is employees. What w VIEW pointed out yesterday during a special Board of Governor's
- 36:02meeting is that you know, these these are scary times for organizations. If
- 36:07you are a long time employee, if you have a mortgage, if you
- 36:10have other commitments in the area, you may, as you'd understand, begin
- 36:15to worry about losing your job. WVW is pointing out that some of this
- 36:20may be taken care of through attrition, through retirements. That it is not
- 36:25most employees that they're at all talking about, but it's you know, it's
- 36:29going to be some sliver of employment employees, and that is small consolation if
- 36:34it's you. So it's it's something you might worry about, But you know,
- 36:38I got to give WVEW some credit. They are being very forthcoming about
- 36:43their process, about their timeline, and mostly what this Board of Governor special
- 36:49meeting yesterday centered on was all right, we want to make it very clear
- 36:53to everyone spots along the way that we're going to communicate what of our decision
- 37:00points are, what we have to decide. There is a I understand that
- 37:07it is a serious financial situation and that it is probably very scary if you're
- 37:12an employee. So my heart goes out to those who are experiencing potential disruption
- 37:16in their lives. But on the other hand, you know, it's it's
- 37:21an almost humorous, very academia way of going about this. We are taking
- 37:27a vote on the possibility of evaluating being our timeline, so with the public,
- 37:36with being open to the public and kind of being transparent about this process,
- 37:40things like the criteria that they'll use to evaluate what programs they're going to
- 37:45consider for elimination, or how are they're going to involve stakeholders and other members
- 37:50of the university community and decision making process. Although those things haven't been established
- 37:53yet, the hope is, and from what it seems like that they're telling
- 37:55us, is that stuff is going to be readily transparent for for folks to
- 38:00be able to evaluate. Yeah, I mean, if you didn't get to
- 38:02watch, I do have a story on our website and at the very bottom
- 38:07I just posted yesterday's agenda and it includes this timeline that we just talked about
- 38:14us. It's various decision points along the way about what severance packages might be,
- 38:19like about how they may assess the necessity for certain employees or certain academic
- 38:27programs. And it's it's all there laid out through October, this coming October
- 38:34or November. So I mean, somebody has really thought through it, and
- 38:39it's it's very detailed in terms of what WVIEW needs to consider and decide over
- 38:45the next few months. Now, being public facing and being transparent about it
- 38:50is definitely a good process when it comes to things along these lines. More
- 38:53continuing coverage of course, like Brad said, you and go to wp metronews
- 38:57dot com. You can see his story over there about the budget at WVU

- 42:58didn't even have time to really get really into your Uh, yeah, it's
- 43:01been seven years that I was away. And whether it's inside this building or
- 43:07just you know, traffic at at Corridor G or something like that. There
- 43:12there are just enough things that are familiar that I feel comfortable very quickly,
- 43:15and there are just enough things that are different getting me to pay attention.
- 43:20I know exactly how that feels. Moving around does, especially if you're revisiting
- 43:23old places. When I came back to Charleston in twenty ten, I hadn't
- 43:28lived here since the nineties, and so it was a lot of that.
- 43:30And even when I visited my mom, she lives out in Beaumont, so
- 43:32I didn't come by Charleston a lot. I would drove straight to her house.
- 43:36So when I moved back here, it was a lot of that,
- 43:37like is this this street that I turned down? It's like I grew up
- 43:40here. I should know, but I don't really remember. What did they
- 43:43move the road exactly? Yeah, that's exactly what it feels like. Man.

- 44:14want you in a better mood three minutes or less after you turn on the
- 44:16radio station. Nine percent of Americans love what they do for a living.
- 44:22We are in the vast minority. You and I are one out of eleven.
- 44:24That means ten out of eleven people you run into they are going to
- 44:29work because they have to go to work, because they have to pay the
- 44:30bills. They gotta put shoes on the kids feet, they gotta put food
- 44:32on the table, and they are probably dreading that ride to work, whether
- 44:36they're dealing with construction on McCorkle or they're trying to fight Cord or g or
- 44:40wherever they're going. So I just want to make that better for them.
- 44:44I want them singing along. I want give them your reason to celebrate and
- 44:47a real interesting fact and have a real good question to kind of get their
- 44:51brain going each end every morning. I am not going to get into serious
- 44:55politics, famine, fire, pestilence, ringing of hands, snashing of teeth.
- 44:59You do that so much better than I could do. That's this ship
- 45:01my afternoon show. It's just like that, man, I don't touch a
- 45:04stuff. If if people want that, we have a place for them to
- 45:08go. But if you just want to crank it up and sing as loud
- 45:13as you can and find a way to muster whatever it is you need to
- 45:17walk through that door at work, that's what I'm going to bring in the
- 45:21morning. That's my goal. I love it. I love the energy with
- 45:22it, and and a little bit about designer and when we start talking about
- 45:25classic country, and of course A ninety six one just recently won the Country
- 45:29Station of the Year in West Virginia from the wvba's which is an interesting win
- 45:32because that's a that's an all country format. So that's so it doesn't matter
- 45:36classic country, current hits anything like that. This is an all country format.
- 45:39So being a classic country station that plays some of the and frankly,
- 45:44this is the when I listened to country music most prominently, this was the
- 45:45music that I listened to. It's my real pedigree goes back to like seventies
- 45:51am Gold type stuff. I was. I went to every concert that came
- 45:53through Charleston, so I don't know how many times I saw like Dolly and
- 45:57Kenny and the Statlers and oak Ridge Boys and on and on, and I
- 45:59saw them dozens of You want to start a knife fight at one of my
- 46:02family where you all you here's the grenade you throw in? You go?
- 46:07Okay, So Statler Brothers or oak Ridge. I'm so hilarious. That's so
- 46:10true. And I'm telling you people are stripping to the waist and duking it
- 46:14out. That's the way it rolls. That's my way of saying, who
- 46:16has the deepest bases? Harold Harold? Harold is Richard? Well now it's
- 46:21Richard, but rest Harold Sultan. But that's a very long way of saying
- 46:27that. I come by this honestly. My granddad, who raised me,
- 46:30was in a bluegrass band when he was in the army in World War Two.
- 46:32My mom's dad was in a gospel quartet in the United States Navy also
- 46:37during World War Two. My grandmother was a girls singer in a big band,
- 46:42and so I was taught very early. There are two kinds of music,
- 46:45Louis Armstrong. There's good and there's bad. That's it. And so
- 46:50it's this stuff from whether it's think the career of George Straight, So think
- 46:53nineteen eighty one seventy one today is the King from eighty one until really about
- 46:59two thousand and six, that's the heyday of George's career. And that's that's
- 47:04the ninety percent of what we do. Lots of great sing along stuff.
- 47:07You know the words. You've been hearing this your whole life. And I
- 47:13have been fortunate enough to play this on the radio, to play this in
- 47:17bands too. For whatever reason, people think I'm a good enough singer that
- 47:21from time to time I've been able to do that. I've gotten to be
- 47:22on the opera a couple of times. But it's just it's something that's in
- 47:27your soul. It's bloodborne, I think, and it is as West Virginia
- 47:31as it gets when you're One of the challenges with doing a classic music format,
- 47:37whether it be country rock or anything else, is when you're in the
- 47:39current hits, there's always news being made, you know. There, you
- 47:43know, new albums are released. The thing is old artists never died,
- 47:45I mean until they do. But but I mean, new albums are not
- 47:49all that rare for even classic artists anymore. You did get that stuff.
- 47:52But when it comes to providing fresh content, different things like that, is
- 47:54it mostly a perspective thing that you try to marry too, because it's not
- 47:58like, you know, you can have a story about Dolly every once a
- 48:00while, but it's not like she's making news every single day. No.
- 48:02But what has made it easy is really social media because you know, we'll
- 48:08focus a lot on George today because it's his birthday. Last week it was
- 48:12a lot about Dolly because she and Garth were hosting the ACMs. But so
- 48:15many of these artists are still on tour, whether they are coming through the
- 48:20Municipal Auditorium here or Renfer Valley Entertainment Center. So many of these artists still
- 48:23play the Oprey from time to time, and the Opery is maybe the best
- 48:29mix of the old and new while they're bringing in new folks like John Party
- 48:32and Ashley McBride and Kelsey Ballerini as new members. You still get to see
- 48:37Genie, Genie Seeley, and Connie Smith and John Conley and whispering Billy Anderson,
- 48:42who's been there sixty two years. That's amazing. And I believe his
- 48:46hairpiece has been there for thirty five. That's not nice. But I think
- 48:51Bill would make that same joke. Rob Reel ninety six one that Superstar Country
- 48:55KWS six to ten on a weekday mornings and one thing. We have a
- 49:00couple of minutes left here, so let me let me ask you this question.
- 49:04You've had, Like you said, you've had a long career, You've
- 49:07had the ability to be able to to meet some of the arts. What
- 49:09do you have like a favorite anecdote, like what's like you? You're the
- 49:13antidote that you tell a speeches, like the thing that if you wanted to
- 49:15make a connection with people industry was, What's the thing you'd like to tell?
- 49:19There are a lot of good ones. The one that's coming to mind
- 49:22right now is when George Jones passed away in twenty thirteen. I'm working in
- 49:29Tarahote, Indiana at the time, and the short version is we had a
- 49:35partnership with the TV station and we would go and basically do a CMA Awards
- 49:38pregame show. So George had died in April, and they tell me about
- 49:43a day and a half before we go, Hey, we've landed an interview
- 49:45with Nancy Jones, George's widow, and it's even it's going to be at
- 49:51the house. So we make the trip down there and we get to the
- 49:57gates and somebody I don't remember who made the joke about please don't ask about
- 50:00the grand tour when we get to the so you know, I'm showing the
- 50:05photogra Okay, make sure you get shots of that award and that award and
- 50:07this is a CMA, that's an ACM, that's a Grammy. Just so
- 50:10we're making all the notes, and Nancy couldn't have been nicer, couldn't have
- 50:15been more forthright with some of the questions, and she just she kept looking
- 50:17at me. She says, you looked so familiar, and well, I
- 50:22got to introduce your husband a few times over the years, and you're the
- 50:25one who's the marine. Yes, yes, yes, ma'am, I was.
- 50:30George did not have a good experience in the United States Marine Corps at
- 50:34all. Two years it was all stateside. I think it was in San
- 50:36Jose. He did not have a good experience as a marine and would not
- 50:38talk about it unless he knew the other person had also been in the cords.
- 50:45So I had gotten to chat with him a little bit. And as
- 50:47Nancy is sharing parts about their story, she's talking just about how they met
- 50:54and how she resisted it first because no sho Jones and his reputation. And
- 51:00somewhere in the course of this, I got the opportunity to sing two and
- 51:05four Nancy Jones in George Jones his widow in George Jones's house as part of
- 51:12this, and to this I will I will be telling that story if I'm
- 51:16ninety on a porch. That's all I got to sing. Walk through this
- 51:20one with me to Nancy Jones. That's that's first line of the YO bit,
- 51:25right there. Man, That is awesome. That is really great.
- 51:28I've been to for George Jones concerts and I've seen him twice. Yes,
- 51:31that is on brand. Yes, yes it was love Love the concerts that
- 51:36I did see even as a young man, but at least song twice.
- 51:38Man, Rob, thanks for coming by and introducing to yourself. We have
- 51:42a lot of folks that listen to our station that also listens to your station,
- 51:45so I thought introducing you so folks when they tune in the morning,
- 51:47we'll know exactly what they're listening to. I think it's good stuff, man,
- 51:50I appreciate it. Thank you for loving your country with me and getting
